Sagrada Familia

The Cathedral of the Holy Cross and Saint Eulalia, commonly known as the Barcelona Cathedral, is a remarkable architectural and religious monument in the capital city of Catalonia. Constructed from the thirteenth to fifteenth centuries, the cathedral is known for its magnificent gothic style of architecture. The Barcelona Cathedral is where his holiness, the Archbishop of Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain sits.

Why visit Barcelona Cathedral?

Barcelona Cathedral

  • The Chapel of the Holy Christ of Lepanto houses a figure believed to have miraculously dodged a cannonball during the 1571 battle of Lepanto or protected the ship from sinking. A replica of the galley can be seen at the Maritime Museum.
  • Barcelona Cathedral also houses the stately Gothic and Baroque altarpieces, part of the Church of Saint Severas as well as the 140 statues of saints that call the cathedral home.
  • You can admire the wonder of the choir, the baptistery, and the tomb of Saint Eulalia.
  • There's an adjoining cloister that features a verdant tropical garden that is home to 13 white geese that represent the age Saint Eulalia (the saint the Barcelona Cathedral was built in honor of) is believed to have died.
  • Accessible from the Chapel of the Holy Innocents, the cathedral's flat roofs provide distinctive views of the Gothic Quarter, allowing one to appreciate the towers and the lantern tower's intricate details.

Barcelona Cathedral Highlights

Barcelona Cathedral floor and cloister

The Cathedral floor and cloister

Located right next to the Barcelona Cathedral and easily accessible from the cathedral floor, is the cloister. It was built much later than the cathedral, sometime in the 14th century, and is considered just as beautiful, if not more. It is loved for the charming courtyard with tall palm trees; a refreshing change of scenery in the Gothic Quarter. Here, you also get to see the 13 geese bathing in the Well of the Geese. The geese are believed to represent the age at which Saint Eulalia was martyred. It is also one of the only places to host Barcelona's most striking tradition of 'Ou com Balla' or dancing egg.

Barcelona Cathedral choir

One of the most magnificent sights and significant sculpture works inside Barcelona Cathedral is that of the choir or choir seats that date back to the 14th and 15th centuries. Built in the Catalan Gothic style, its canopies and pinnacles were made by the sculptor Michael Lochner and his disciple Johan Friedrich at the end of the 15th century. Having preserved its charm as is, on these seats you see the details such as the coats-of-arms of the knights of the Order of the Golden Fleece which were painted on the backs of all the choir seats.

Barcelona Cathedral Museum

Gothic Barcelona Cathedral has a small museum too, that is located under the gallery of the cloister next to the chapel dedicated to Saint Lucia. The museum does not have too many artefacts on display. However, the few works here are considered to be of great importance, like the works of Spanish gothic painter Bartolomé Bermejo. You will also find the terracotta sculpture of Saint Eulalia by Anthony Claperós, and paintings of Saint Bernardino and the Guardian Angel. Another significant piece is the monstrance, from the late-14th century, made up from the campaign throne of King Martin the Humane.

Barcelona Cathedral Chapel of Lepanto

Chapel of Lepanto

The Chapel of Lepanto was built as a small chapterhouse or place to hold meetings. It is considered special because it holds an unusual crucifix known as the Holy Christ of Lepanto. The crucifix is famous for its slanted shape, which according to legend occurred when it was aboard a royal ship under the attack of a cannonball fire. It is believed that the crucifix miraculously leaned to the side on its own to avoid the fire and has stayed slanted that way since. Another story says the cross was in the ship and was moved to cover a large hole that would've sunk the ship.

Barcelona Cathedral Highlights- Rooftop

To enjoy spectacular views of the city of Barcelona take the elevator up to the rooftops from the Barcelona Cathedral. It can be accessed through the chapel of Innocent Saints. This is an especially good idea if you're on a time-crunch, you'll only have to pay a small fee to use the lift. Once here, you get to take in the views of central Barcelona and some of the well-known parts of the city like the two bell towers, the two lateral pinnacles, the cimborio crowned by the Holy Cross, the cloister and just a beautiful panoramic view of Barcelona.

The inside story

Unfortunately, due to the recent fire that damaged its iconic spire, the 850-year-old Cathédrale de Notre Dame de Paris, simply known as Notre-Dame, has been forced to temporarily close. There’s speculation it will take at least five years before it can be restored to its former splendour.

Located on a small island called the Ile de la Cite in the middle of river Seine, the cathedral is among the most significant cultural treasures of Paris and a prime example of French Gothic architecture. Started in 1163 during the reign of King Louis VII, the construction of the cathedral went on for more than 2 centuries. Throughout its history, Notre-Dame has lived through moments of both glory and decay; once coming close to being demolished, it was later saved by Napoleon, who was crowned Emperor in 1804 inside the cathedral. A great historical artefact in itself, the building of Notre-Dame serves also as a museum, where drawings, plans and engravings show the old and hidden mysteries of the church development and how the city of Paris changed through the centuries.

The Geographical Cure

Visiting Palermo Cathedral And Climbing The Rooftop, The Complete Guide

Planning a visit to Palermo Cathedral? The cathedral is a prime example of Sicily’s Arab-Norman architecture and part of Palermo’s UNESCO designation.

Like Palermo itself, it’s a mix of architectural styles with Greek, Roman, Arab, Norman, and Swabian features. It was expanded and altered with each change of power. Now, it’s an imposing hulk synthesizing 700 years of history.

Pinterest pin for Ultimate Guide To Palermo Cathedral

History of Palermo Cathedral

The official name of the cathedral is the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. It’s the cathedral church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Palermo.

Building began in 1170 on the site of the former mosque and the cathedral was consecrated in 1185.

The cathedral was built roughly the same time as neighboring Monreale Cathedral. The Cathedral was commissioned by the Anglo-Norman Archbishop of Palermo, Walter Ophamil, while Monreale was built by King William II.

The archbishop and the king were arch rivals, vying for power and an alliance with the Vatican . Each wanted to outdo the other and the cathedrals became a sort of competition.

Palermo Cathedral

Palermo Cathedral has an exuberant exterior. With the benefit of the royal purse, Monreale was given a breathtaking mosaic-encrusted interior. Legend holds that each man had a heart attack when they looked on each other’s creation.

The cathedral was where the Norman kings were crowned. It still has a treasury filled with jewelry and precious church artifacts.

The present Neo-Classical appearance (and rather clumsy dome) date from 1781 to 1801 and were supervised by Ferdinando Fuga. To me, this was an unfortunate change that altered the medieval aspect of the cathedral. But it did give the structure a more vertical appearance.

In 1840, to attempt to rescue the medieval look, a complex of bell towers were built on the western end in the Gothic Revival style. Since then, there have plans to “hide” or eliminate the large dome, but none have come to fruition.

sculpture in Palermo Cathedral courtyard

The church is connected, through two pointed arches to the Archbishop’s palace, making the church look a bit like a castle.

What To See At Palermo Cathedral

On a visit to Palermo Cathedral, you can see the facade, the interior, the royal tombs, the crypt, the treasury, and climb up to the rooftop viewing terrace.

There’s a beautiful rectangular square in front of the cathedral. It’s surrounded with a marble balustrade and statues of saints and bishops of Palermo standing in contraposto .

The square was built in the 15th century to replace the cathedral cemetery. It was once the center of activity in the city, home to public trials and festivals.

tours cathedral tickets

The wild wedding cake facade is a bit of an architecture mural mash up. But it’s nonetheless very eye catching.

It’s covered with geometric patterns, crenellations, cupolas, and blind Arab style arches. At the corners, there’s a large western tower and four graduated towers at the eastern end.

Designed by Antonio Gambara, the 15th century marble portico dates from Spanish rule. It took 200 years to complete and is a masterpiece of Catalan Gothic architecture. This is where you enter the cathedral.

On the far left column of the portal is an Arab inscription of a verse from the Koran. The column was most likely recycled from the previous mosque.

Arab design on the apse in the rear

Above the arches is an intricate 13th century frieze and pediment with Islamic style decorations. In the middle is a relief of God, raising his hand in blessing. To his side are the Archangel Gabriel and the Virgin Mary. Above are two flying angels playing musical instruments.

The figures are topped with spiraling Gothic tracery. Below is a frieze of enthroned Christian saints.

The intricate entrance portal has two Corinthian columns on each side and twisting arches above. At the top is a Byzantine style mosaic enclosed by a marble frame. The precious wooden doors are made of walnut, with 28 panels of finely carved decorations.

Be sure to head around to the back of the cathedral to see the facade of the apses. It’s a reminder that Arabs once ruled Sicily and one of the most beautiful parts of the cathedral, with the least amount of architectural tampering.

You can see a profusion of Moorish decorations in the apse — repeating ogival arches, rounded parapet crenellations, and geometric medallions made with black lava and limestone.

interior of Palermo Cathedral

Compared to the wild exterior, the interior of Palermo Cathedral isn’t very impressive, except in scale. It’s mostly a white Neo-Classical shell.

In fact, the interior is surpassed by many churches in Palermo — La Martorano, Santa Caterina, the Gesu, etc. It has a Latin cross floor plan with two aisles divided by pilasters with statues mounted on corbels.

You’ll find a loaded-with-silver chapel dedicated to Rosalia, Palermo’s beloved patron saint who performed miracles and “ended” the plague. Above the altar is the painting The Coronation of Rosalia .

There are some other sober Baroque chapels. There is also an important altar celebrating one of Palermo most famous citizens, Father Giuseppe Puglisi.

He spoke out against the mafia, was assassinated for his efforts, and then became a martyr. In 1015, he was beatified, the first step toward canonization.

Chapel of Rosalia

Royal Tombs

If you buy the full ticket, you can inspect the royal tombs, in a chapel to the left as you enter. There are six tombs of the kings of Palermo.

The most important are those of Roger II and Frederick II. Roger founded the Kingdom of Sicily, while Frederick was the Holy Roman Emperor called super mundi or wonder of the world.

You’ll see two monumental red porphyry sarcophagi. They were commissioned by Roger II and, based on the use of expensive Egyptian porphyry, reveal his imperial ambitions.

Palermo Cathedral didn’t get all the royal tombs. William I and William II are buried in Monreale Cathedral.

tomb of Frederick II

The treasury is to the left of the Chapel of Saint Rosalia. It houses some Norman era jewels and religious relics.

The most famous piece is the 13th century crown of Constance of Aragon, who was the wife of Frederick II. It’s a cap in gold studded with pearls and precious stones. A grislier relic is the tooth and ashes of Saint Rosalia.

The cathedral’s Romanesque crypt dates from the 6th century. In the damp subterranean, two naves rest on 14 columns made of Egyptian granite.

The crypt contains carved sarcophagi of various bishops and ecclesiasts of Palermo, including the cathedral’s founder.

One sarcophagus shows a team of hunters attacking a boar. There’s a beautiful Roman tomb made for a poet and another with a matrimonial scene.

madonna and child painting in the Diocesan Museum

Diocesan Museum

The Diocesan Museum is across the street in the Archbishop’s Palace. It’s fairly unremarkable, though, with a collection of mostly anonymous religious paintings.

There are some works by Pietro Novelli, Sicily’s most famous painter of the 17th century.

In general, it’s not really for the casual fan. You need to be a student of medieval religious art.

Palermo Cathedral rooftop

Palermo Cathedral Rooftop

The best part is hiking up to the cathedral rooftop. You’ll have 360 views of Palermo.

It’s not for the faint of heart or those scared of heights. You climb a spiral staircase with over 100 steps that’s dimly lit, though there is a handrail.

Once at the top, you’ll walk along a narrow catwalk that runs the length of the roof. It’s secure with railings. But still, your pulse may race a bit.

But the views are fantastic. You can see the cathedral architecture up close and have lovely city views.

Tips For Visiting Palermo Cathedral

Tickets & tours.

Entry to the cathedral nave itself is free. But there are several variations of tickets, depending on what you want to see.

For 15 euros, you can see everything including the tombs, treasury, crypts, rooftop terrace, and the Diocesan Museum. Here’s the price breakdown from the website.

ticket prices for Palermo Cathedral

Click  here  to book a skip the line ticket for the cathedral. You can also visit the cathedral on a  guided art and architecture tour .

Check the website because the different parts of the cathedral have different hours.

Be sure to wear something appropriate. Women cannot wear shorts, miniskirts, or sleeveless tops inside.

Is Palermo Cathedral Worth Visiting?

Is the cathedral worth visiting? It’s definitely worthwhile to come to admire the magnificent exterior from the front and back.

Is it worth going inside? The interior had no wow factor for me.

But it’s perfectly free to wander inside, so I would take a quick spin … if it’s not full of cruise ship crowds.

The cathedral is also currently under renovation, so parts of the central nave are closed off.

For me, I thought the best part of my cathedral visit was climbing up to the rooftop for the views. I was underwhelmed by the entirely skippable crypt, tombs, and museum.

facade of Palermo Cathedral

On balance, I would recommend just getting a ticket for the roof and not the complete ticket. You save a few euros that way.

There are plenty of other churches in Palermo with much more beautiful interiors. For example, La Martorana is a golden treasure with a continuous cycle of jewel-like mosaics created by Greek artists in the 12th century.

The Gesu is an incredibly ornate church and Palermo’s third largest. It exemplifies the Baroque period’s “fear of empty spaces.” You’ll find elaborately carved columns, dramatic statuary groupings, twisty columns, and ceiling frescos.

How Long To Spend at Toledo Cathedral

tours cathedral tickets

Short answer:  1 hour and 30 mins.

However, you could easily stay much longer depending on what you want to see in the cathedral. Aside from the main nave, there are eight more chapels in the cathedral—each with their own intricate details and beauty.

You can also visit the sacristy, treasury, custode, choir, and chapterhouse. The sacristy alone could take up a fair amount of time, especially for art lovers wanting to admire the artwork by the likes of El Greco, Titian, Caravaggio, Goya, and more.

The cathedral is full of art and history and there’s an incredible amount of detail to take in. If that interests you, you could easily spend up to 3 hours or more exploring Toledo Cathedral.

What To See at Toledo Cathedral

The cathedral that you see today has functioned as a temple since the 13th century. However, it has been a place of worship since the 6th century in Visigothic times. You’ll see an impressive blend of styles that reflect its long history.

In the sacristy, admire artworks by important artists like El Greco, Caravaggio, and Titian, among others. The details and decorations of the various spaces in Toledo Cathedral are exquisite. There’s a lot to take in, but here are the top things to see at the cathedral.

  • Capilla Mayor (Main Chapel)
  • Capilla de los Reyes Nuevos (Chapel of the New Monarchs)
  • Corpus Christi Chapel (or Mozarabic Chapel)
  • St. Idelfonso Chapel
  • Chapterhouse
  • St. Blas Chapel
  • Monstrance of Enrique de Arfe

Facts and History of Toledo Cathedral

I used to live in Toledo and spent much of my time getting to know the history of the remarkable buildings here, in addition to my medieval studies and expertise. Check out these interesting facts about the Toledo Cathedral so you can understand a little more about its construction and history before you visit.

  • The current cathedral is built on top of the remains of the Visigoth cathedral from the 6th century.
  • In the Middle Ages, this temple was also used as a mosque during the time of the Spanish Reconquista.
  • The cathedral is built in the Gothic style, heavily influenced by the French churches of the time, since its first architect was French.
  • All the vaults in the cathedral would not be completely closed and finished until the 16th century.
  • During the Renaissance, the music developed at Toledo Cathedral would be influential for the whole of Spain, even creating its own variances of the Gregorian chant.
  • The cathedral is home to three important historical archives, including the old archive for the whole of Toledo. It contains over 2,500 manuscripts and 5,000 books.
  • Toledo Cathedral is home to 12 royal burials from different Spanish lineages. These go as far back as Visigothic times from the 7th to the 15th centuries.
  • The cathedral is one of the few medieval Spanish buildings with the largest number of original medieval stained glass windows.
  • The triptych in the main chapel is one of the best examples of late Gothic artwork in Spain.
  • One of the most important patrons of the cathedral was Cardinal Cisneros. He was the confessor of Isabel of Castile and grand inquisitor, among other things.

Getting to the Minster

York is well served by the road network and public transport. The main railway station, which has barrier free access, is about 1 kilometre from the Minster. There are safe crossing places along the way. Bus services run to Museum Street close to the Minster and there are on-street accessible parking bays close to the Minster.

Blue Badge parking locations in the city can be found here.

Entrance to the Minster

There is a choice of ramped or stepped access with handrails from Precentor’s Court, which leads through an outer doorway and glass porch to the admission desk. The Minster is open Monday-Saturday from 9.30am until 3.30pm (last admission) and from 12:45pm until 2.15pm (last admission) on Sundays. There is a charge to enter the Minster, although accompanying carers are not charged for entry. Guided tours are free to visitors afterwards (Monday to Saturday).

Minster Interior

York Minster is a very large gothic building with high ceilings, magnificent stained glass windows and mostly stone floors. Although it is a place of reverence it can also be quite busy and noisy when visitors are present or, for example, when the organ is playing. Light levels vary in different parts of the Minster, particularly where sunlight impacts on the stained glass windows or in the Undercroft, which is the lowest part of the Minster and a darker area. The main features of the Minster, except the Tower, have level, ramped or lift access to them.

The Tower does not have wheelchair access and visitors need to climb the 275 stone steps of a spiral staircase, which does have a handrail on the left going up, to reach the top. There is an additional charge to visit the Tower. Please see the full health and safety details here .

Main Minster Floor

On entering at the West End the Minster is set out in the form of a cross, with the Nave in front and the North Transept to the left and South Transept to the right, with the East End beyond. The raised Quire occupies a central space with walkways on either side leading to the East End. The West End, Nave and North Transept and South Transept and the East End of the Minster are on one level, with paved stone floors throughout.

Organ and Quire

There is stepped and ramped access to the Quire from the Nave next to the Kings Screen. The Quire area where the organ is positioned is mainly single level. About halfway down the Quire there are three sets of shallow steps which lead up to the high altar. For this reason, only the first section of the Quire is accessible for wheelchair users.

Chapter House

There is convenient sloped access from the North Transept leading to the Chapter House.

Undercroft, Treasury and Crypt

There is stepped and lift access from the South Transept to the Undercroft, which tells the story of the Minster and has historic books and artefacts on display.  It has level or ramped access throughout.

The Treasury and Crypt contain an exhibition on Pilgrimage and the tomb of St William.  Currently they are accessed via a set of seven steps from the Undercroft; we are taking measures to improve this and platform lift access to these two areas is due to be in place by the end of summer 2019.

Toilet Facilities

There are male and female toilet facilities, baby changing and an accessible toilet facility located after the North Transept towards the East End of the Minster. There are ambulant toilet cubicles available in the main male and female toilet areas.

Minster Shop

There is flat-level access to the Minster shop from the South side of the Nave towards the South Transept, and stepped or ramp access from the shop through the South Transept and out the South Door into the Minster Piazza. Any visitors who require ramp access to the shop, please ask at the North West door of the Minster and a member of staff will show you the way through. There is no ramp access directly into the shop from street level.

The Giralda Tower , an iconic symbol of Seville, is a remarkable architectural gem that stands as a testament to the city’s rich history. Originally built as a minaret during the Islamic rule of Spain, the tower is a masterpiece of Moorish design and engineering.

Its unique feature is the gently sloping ramp that spirals up the tower, which was designed to allow the muezzin to ride to the top on horseback to make the call to prayer. After the Christian Reconquista, the tower was converted into a bell tower and today, it remains one of the most recognizable landmarks in Seville.

Situated adjacent to the Seville Cathedral, the Giralda Tower is in close proximity to this grand cathedral, making it a perfect starting point for a visit to both historic treasures. Ascending the Giralda offers visitors breathtaking panoramic views of the city, a glimpse into its historical layers, and a profound appreciation for the harmonious blend of cultures that have shaped Seville’s architectural and cultural identity.

Things to do | more than 20 previously uncounted ballots discovered during congressional district 16 recount, subscriber only, things to do | take a hidden tour of grace cathedral, san francisco’s gothic masterpiece, secret passageways and ancient artifacts are the stars of new “behind-the-scenes” tours of the famous church..

A Spanish Crucifix is illuminated as visitors pray at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, Calif., on Friday, April 5, 2024. (Jose Carlos Fajardo/Bay Area News Group)

It’s a blustery spring afternoon in San Francisco, and we are gathered for one of the first-ever behind the scenes tours of that Gothic wonder, Grace Cathedral .

It may look like a grand flourish sitting atop Nob Hill, but the cathedral is still under construction — as you’ll discover now that these tours have opened to the public. Built in 1862, the original structure was destroyed during the 1906 earthquake and ensuing fire. Construction began on the current cathedral in 1927.

Today, the vaulting near the ceiling is unfinished and some statue niches remain empty. “It has been said that a great cathedral is never finished, words that echo the unfinished work of the Spirit,” says Julie Knight, director of cultural membership and visitor experience. Grace will one day be completed, but in the meantime it holds all sorts of neat fundraising activities. There are concerts devoted to the music of Nintendo and Hayao Miyazaki movies , yoga atop its labyrinths, sound baths and now, architectural tours like this new exploration of historic rooms, hidden passageways and ancient artifacts.

A view of the altar of the Chapel of Grace which was made in 1521 A.D. shown during a behind the scenes tour of Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, Calif., on Friday, April 5, 2024. (Jose Carlos Fajardo/Bay Area News Group)

Our guide today is Kenn Sparks who, with a trimmed beard and rumbling basso, has the presence of an Orson Welles.

We stand in the cavernous central hall of the cathedral, which has massive organ pipes in front and also in back. If it didn’t, there’d be a quarter-second sound delay, and the front part of the congregation would be singing earlier than the back rows – presumably annoying god.

Tour group visitor Kelly Huibregtse, of San Francisco, stands on a balcony overlooking the indoor labyrinth during a behind the scenes tour of Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, Calif., on Friday, April 5, 2024. (Jose Carlos Fajardo/Bay Area News Group)

Up on a mezzanine is what looks like a child’s toy piano. If a child actually played it, though, the results might cause a public emergency. The keys link to dozens of bells in the tower, including a six-ton one that rings the hours. The bells clang to celebrate World Series and Super Bowl wins and other commemorations. Sometimes after service, musicians like to noodle on the keyboard, playing popular songs like “Over the Rainbow” and “I Left my Heart in San Francisco.”

We enter an ambulatory or hidden passageway located behind the altar. Clergy use this shadowy hallway during services to scurry from one side of the church to the other. A number of beautiful stained-glass windows point toward the Anglican Churches of the Pacific Basin, from New Zealand to Taiwan to Japan.

Now we’re inside the vestry, which is paneled entirely in ornate walnut and smells like a classy antique shop. This is where the California bishop (currently Marc Handley Andrus) keeps a private camp to pray and store liturgical vestments. We observe a bible open to Ezekiel: 35 (“I lay your towns in ruins; you shall become a desolation, and you shall know that I am the LORD”) and run our fingers through the bishop’s cloaks – not sure if his eminence would approve of this, but he’s not here right now. The vestments are all hand-sewn, and a member of our group jokes she has a friend who became a bishop “only for the clothes.”

A view of the bishop's vestry seen during a behind the scenes tour of Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, Calif., on Friday, April 5, 2024. (Jose Carlos Fajardo/Bay Area News Group)

Next up is the Chapel of Grace. This small chapel is normally closed and has Spanish-style wrought-iron gates barring passage from the outside. William Randolph Hearst’s body was laid in state here, and Bill Clinton booked it in 1994 to pray during a trip to San Francisco — just him, his thoughts and the Secret Service lurking in the background.

The cathedral holds all manner of unexpected artifacts. There’s a circa 1521 stone tomb from France with a coat of arms from the monastic-military Knights Hospitaller, Order of Saint John of Jerusalem. According to legend a Crusader knight was interred here but no longer, as French revolutionaries scattered his bones. A Romanesque limestone credence table for the host and wine likely dates to the 12th century; it’s the oldest furnishing in the church.

The next large room is filled with art and furniture, including the bishop’s chair, carved from redwood with armrests shaped like an owl (wisdom) and lion (strength). A hallway holds Ansel Adams photographs and an oak eagle carved by Gutzon Borglum, the sculptor of Mount Rushmore. It served as the cathedral’s lectern up until the 1960s. Lit from below is a brilliant, colorful portrait from photographer David LaChapelle of a Haitian model as the Virgin Mary; it was gifted a couple years ago and consecrated as an icon of the cathedral.

The cathedral’s crypt is unusual in that it’s above ground. There’s room for 3,000 souls, and it’s only half full, so get your plans in order today and you can spend the afterlife here for $8,000 . (Though $10,000 will get you a space at a more desirable “eye-to-heart” level.)

We climb into the upper recesses of the cathedral and, crossing a catwalk, encounter E=MC2, the stained-glass Albert Einstein tribute. A glassy version of astronaut John Glenn is nearby. Our guide cautions us to tighten our hardhats, lest they fall off while we’re looking around and bonk the noggins of the faithful below.

Tour group visitor Kelly Huibregtse, of San Francisco, smiles as she ducks down to enter a small passage way inside the south tower during a behind the scenes tour of Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, Calif., on Friday, April 5, 2024. The passageway allows visitors to view the stained glass window of Albert Einstein located 174 feet above the floor of the cathedral. (Jose Carlos Fajardo/Bay Area News Group)

The final stretch takes us up multiple levels of stairs to an open-air observatory protected by pigeon netting. Bells crash and powerful winds blow, as we take in the cathedral’s nearly 250-foot-tall spire, called Le Fleche, because it represents an arrow shooting prayers directly up to god. There are no gargoyles on this steeple, but there are grotesques, in this case wyverns that look like fire-breathing dragons with scorpion tails. They’re meant to ward off evil from not just the church but also the city.

“I think we might need more dragons,” rumbles our guide Sparks.

The tower offers nearly 360-degree views of the expansive city below. Our attention is caught by a building in a park across the way. It’s the Pacific-Union Club at the top of Nob Hill, one of the largest men’s-only clubs in the U.S. The motto, our guide intones, is rumored to be “No women, no journalists, no Democrats.”

A view of the Albert Einstein stained glass window can only be seen during a behind the scenes tour of Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, Calif., on Friday, April 5, 2024. The window is located almost 200 feet above ground. (Jose Carlos Fajardo/Bay Area News Group)

Details: General admission to San Francisco’s Grace Cathedral, located at 1100 California St., is $12. Behind the scenes tours are $27 to $30. Reserved a timed entry ticket at gracecathedral.org .
