If you can't load a website or webpage, or Safari quits unexpectedly, follow these steps.

Connect to a different network

Try to load a website, like www.apple.com , using cellular data. If you don't have cellular data, connect to a different Wi-Fi network , then load the website.

If you're using a VPN (Virtual Private Network), check your VPN settings . If you have a VPN turned on, some apps or websites might block content from loading.

Restart your device

Turn off your device and turn it on again.

1. Reload the webpage

Has anyone noticed that Safari for MacOS Sonoma is allowing more popup windows compared to previous MacOS? After updating to MacOS Sonoma, I found that when Safari is set to "Open pages in tabs: Always", pages that previously opened in a new tab now open a popup window. One example is logging in to Etrade and then clicking or Command-clicking the link for Power Etrade. I have tried resetting Safari and deleting all preferences files but it is still opening popup window instead of a tab. I have also tried setting Pop-up windows to always block, but no difference.

Have you been able to solve this issue? I am experiencing the exact same problem with Etrade, and it is driving me crazy. I need Power Etrade to launch as a tab rather than a window. It is very inconvenient switching back and forth between the screens this way. I have also messed with all the settings and had no luck. I upgraded to Sonoma this morning.

*Unable to open safari at all*

Whenever I open safari, the app name on the menu bar shows that I have opened safari, but the app window is not at all opening. I tried force quitting and reopened it, but no use.

I followed several tutorials online to clear cache, history etc etc. But all in vain.

But, when I created another user account and tried opening safari, it opens there, But not in my main user account.

This is very annoying, for the past several weeks I have been reaching out to the apple support team, but no one has been able to solve this issue. I could not even find anyone facing a similar issue online.

Please anyone suggest me some way to rectify the issue.

I am using MacBook M1 Pro, 14 inch. MacOS Ventura .

I agree reinstalling macOS is likely to be a waste of time, since you already know the problem does not occur in a different User Account. Unfortunately I have no idea what the source of the corruption may be. In cases such as yours I will progressively expand the concept of dragging things out of likely folders in ~/Library until something eventually changes.

Also please confirm I am understanding the problem correctly. When Safari fails to launch, does its icon "bounce" in the Dock followed by no other apparent action? Does the Safari app open but no windows appear? In the latter case the Mac's menu bar will indicate Safari at the upper left, adjacent to the  (Apple) menu. What appears in the Mac's menu bar instead of Safari?

Another fundamental question: Please confirm you are launching Safari from /Applications and not some other location. This may not be obvious. To confirm, please use the Finder's Go menu > Applications , and launch Safari from that folder.

Before you go any further please be sure to have created a backup as a fallback solution in the event things get seriously messed up: Back up your files with Time Machine on Mac - Apple Support . That should just go without saying.

I don't believe that will be necessary. If you have an abundance of time and curiosity, you could try selectively copying those Safari related files back into their original locations, thereby overwriting their newly created ones.

  • To copy a file, option-drag it.

In that manner, you could conceivably isolate the cause to one or more specific files. It's up to you.

If certain web pages load slowly, I would begin with the fundamental step of clearing Safari's history and / or website data before doing anything drastic:

Otherwise perhaps those websites are simply slow to load due to factors beyond your control.

I understand that when you launch the Safari app, the app opens but no windows appear. Safari opens and works as expected in a different User Account. Apple Support was unable to fix it.

The fact Safari works in a different User Account suggests a corrupted file in one of several potential places. I have several suggestions that Apple may or may not have had you try, so consider the following.

Quit the Safari app if it is open. Safari menu > Quit Safari . If that menu is dimmed or "greyed out" just force Safari to quit according to How to force an app to quit on your Mac - Apple Support . Then, press and hold a Shift key while launching Safari from Applications, Launchpad, or the Dock. Release the Shift key when Safari opens.

That action causes Safari to open with no previously opened windows or tabs.

If the problem remains, continue.

Quit the Safari app if it is open.

Then, navigate to your User Library by typing the following in the Finder's Go menu > Go To Folder... field.

... and click the Go button. A Finder window will open. The files it contains are some of your User Account - specific files that could be contributing to the problem. Other User Accounts have their own User Libraries.

From there, your task is to find certain Safari-related files and drag them out of their locations and onto the Desktop. Each time you do that, open Safari again and determine if the problem is fixed or not. Quit Safari if it is not fixed, and proceed to the next step. Stop when it's fixed.

Open the folder named Saved Application State . Drag the file named com.apple.Safari.savedState onto the Desktop. Then, back out of that folder (use the "back button") which returns you to ~/Library or just repeat the same Go To Folder actions you did before.

Repeating the same general instructions, open the ~ /Library/Preferences/ folder. In it, find com.apple.Safari.plist and drag it onto the Desktop.

That is as far as I'll go for the time being, but you should have the general idea. The worst thing that could happen is that you will be logged out of websites and / or have to provide login information or whatever other website preferences may have been affected, in which case you could always drag those files back into their original locations. Let me know if anything helps.

Thank you, that is very helpful. It means Safari is in fact open, but it may be unresponsive or a supporting file may be corrupted.

Just to confirm, what happens when you choose File > New Window ? Or is that selection unavailable / "greyed out"?

If you are getting desperate, you can try downloading Safari Technology Preview: Safari Technology Preview - Safari - Apple Developer . I do not believe you need a Developer Account to download it, and it might serve as a substitute for your needs until we can get the present version fixed.

Safari Technology Preview is not to be confused with any prerelease (beta) Safari versions, which is a totally different program.

Can I use Safari Technology preview as my default browser? Will it be fine? is there any way to install safari for Ventura Like that?

Yes to all questions. You can continue to use it, since it relies upon a separate set of supporting files that obviously are not suffering from whatever corruption may have affected Safari's usual ones.The caveat is that Safari Technology Preview will cease to function when Ventura's version eventually becomes superseded.

The fact it works certainly helps troubleshooting, but it does not add anything to determining the reason Ventura's installed version does not work. Fixing it short of reinstalling macOS (which I don't believe will help) is going to be a time-consuming task because I have no way to determine which file is responsible for its apparent corruption. I can only suggest proceeding along the lines you and I and tygb already suggested... there simply must be another file or files somewhere within your User Account that are causing the misbehavior. This is a tedious task with a communications medium like Apple Support Communities.

Until I can determine and provide suggestions for more targeted areas to examine, you might consider logging into the spare User Account you created, and dragging an ever-expanding set of User Library folders into the Shared folder. Then, log into your normal account and drag them from Shared, replacing your corresponding User Library files.

Share files with others who use your Mac - Apple Support describes the Shared folder and how to use it.

That will obviously be a time-consuming and perhaps unfruitful exercise. Try reinstalling macOS first.

I am afraid I am no closer to finding a solution muhammadwasee_m . All potential solutions should have been addressed by the fairly extreme step of dragging the entire User Library onto the Desktop and restarting your Mac as tygb explained earlier. If I understand correctly, you already did that to no avail.

EtreCheck does nothing except gather information about your Mac and present it in report form. It may not reveal anything actionable, but it will be more information than we have so far. Consider using it. It will reveal nothing of a personal nature. You can drag the app to the Trash when you're finished with it; it does exactly nothing unless it is running.

I was able to find Safari download facility(pkg file, if I am not wrong) for previous MacOS versions. So similarly when such version is available for Ventura, will reinstalling that Safari
solve my issue by any chance??

I completely understand your desire to "reset" or erase the existing Safari problems and start over with a clean slate, but Safari is not available as a separate download. Update to the latest version of Safari - Apple Support explains that it is only updated concurrently with macOS. Since the problem began prior to doing that and persisted after upgrading macOS there is nothing else to do in that regard.

I was able to provide selections for New windows open with >. I changed the entry for Homepage, and made New windows to open with Homepage.

Thank you for your time and efforts. But the issue is still not resolved. I now literally drag and dropped all the files which you have mentioned above to Desktop. When I again tried, Safari failed to open.😔

The only suggestion the apple support team was able to give me was to reinstall the OS. But I am not sure how that will work out. Because when the issue first arrived, I was using Monterey, but later I installed Ventura. But still, the issue hasn't been solved!

One more thing, just curious, is there any particular reason that might have corrupted my Safari?

First of all, To confirm your understanding of the problem.

Other clarification

--> Yes, Apple support team suggested safe mode login. But that too failed.

--> Yes, I have checked the Applications folder, Safari is present there. Opening from there doesn't work as well.

--> I don't get any error messages as well!!

Regarding backup

--> I am currently having my end-semester exams going on. So I am waiting till next week Friday to go home and take back-up with Time machine.

--> After backup I will follow up your suggestions, if any you will.

Just a query , does resetting Safari makes any difference? I think I have to anyway take backup before doing such methods.

If you have any further suggestions, even to work with terminal I am fine with it, please let me know. Once I take back-up, I will try them out and let you know here.

In Safari's Preferences > General , are you able to provide selections for New windows open with > something in its dropdown menu? Select something other than Empty Page , and then provide an entry for Homepage such as https://www.icloud.com/

Then try selecting New Tab again. Determine if the same blank window appears.

Earlier, as suggested by @ John Galt, I drag and dropped them in desktop. But I didn't restart the system to check whether safari worked. I will check it now, and let you know.

I have tried restarting the system. No changes. It is still not responding.

Reinstalling macOS, as much as I think it will be a waste of time, is about all I can come up with for now. This is nuts.

I'm curious to see if the same problem manifests in Safari Technology Preview.

Oh... I tried installing Safari Technology Preview . It works !!!!.

I haven't come across this application so far. What is the difference between actual safari and this one? Can I use Safari Technology preview as my default browser? Will it be fine? is there any way to install safari for Ventura Like that?

What to Do if Safari is Not Opening on Mac

Safari Not Working on Mac

Apple’s Safari browser is specifically designed to run on Mac computers and it usually runs smoothly and does not bother its users.

However, the default Safari browser on Mac can sometimes run into problems and even refuse to start or open a browser window.

You should be able fix the problem of Safari Not Working or Opening on Mac using troubleshooting steps as provided below.

1. Force Quit Safari Browser

Force Quit Safari Browser and see this helps in opening Safari browser on your MacBook.

1. Click on Apple Logo in top-menu bar and select Force Quit option in the drop-down menu.

2. In the pop up, select Safari and click on the Force Quit button.

After quitting Safari browser, check to see if you can now open Safari browser on your computer.

2. Restart Mac

If you are unable to Launch Safari browser, the problem could be due to stuck programs or services on your Mac.

The simplest way to fix this issue is to Shut Down Mac > Wait for 30 seconds and Restart Mac .

Restarting the Mac also help in clearing network related problems. Hence, it is recommended that you try this fix, before moving to other troubleshooting steps.

3. Install Updates

The only way to update Safari browser on your MacBook is to install available MacOS Updates (if any).

1. Click on Apple Logo in top-menu bar and select About This Mac  option in the drop-down menu.

2. Next, click on Software Update and follow the instructions to install the Update (if available).

4. Delete Safari Cache & History Using Finder

If you are unable to Clear Safari Cache & Clear Safari History the usual way, you can also do it from the Finder.

1. Open the Finder > select Go tab in top-menu bar and click on Go to Folder option in the drop-down menu.

2. In Go to Folder window, type ~/Library/Safari and click on the Go button.

3. In Safari Folder, right-click on LastSession.plist file and click on Move to Trash . Similarly, move all the files containing History.db in their names to Trash.

After removing Safari History and Cache, see if you are able to open Safari browser.

Note: It is safe to remove these files, Safari will once again create these files during your next browsing session.

5. Disable Safari Extensions

Although, Safari browser is not opening, you should be able to see Safari menu bar when you click on Safari icon in the Taskbar.

1. Click on Safari icon in the Taskbar > click on Safari tab in top-menu bar and select Preferences in the drop-down menu.

3. On Safari Preferences screen, switch to Extensions tab > Select and Uninstall the Extensions.

If you do want to use Extensions, disable all the Extensions by Unchecking them and try to open Safari browser.

If you cannot open Safari, it confirms that the problem is due to one of the Extensions that you need to identify and remove.

You can do this by enabling the Extensions one-by-one, until you find the one causing the problem.

6. Delete Safari Preferences File

Corrupted files in Safari preferences folder can prevent Safari from opening.

1. Open Finder > click on the Go tab in top-menu bar and select Go to Folder  option in the drop-down menu.

2. In the Go to window, type ~/Library and click on the Go button.

3. In the Library Folder, open the Preferences Folder > right-click on com.apple.Safari.plist file and click on Move to Trash .

After deleting Safari Preferences File, you should be able to open Safari browser.

    The correct syntax is window.open(URL,WindowTitle,'_blank') All the arguments in the open must be strings. They are not mandatory, and window can be dropped. So just newWin=open() works as well, if you plan to populate newWin.document by yourself.
