Tickets go on sale a week today, on Friday, December 15 at 10am from all the usual places â so via billyjoel.com, aegpresents.co.uk, axs.com or ticketmaster.com.
Billy's last trip to the UK came in the summer just gone, when he topped the bill at the annual BST Hyde Park event.
At the show he performed an era-straddling set of hits, including 'She's Always A Woman', 'Piano Man' , 'New York State of Mind', 'The Longest Time' and 'We Didn't Start The Fire'.
He was joined by special guest Joe Jonas for 'Uptown Girl' , just the latest in a stream of major stars to duet with Billy on the road.

"I don't get to come here that much," Billy told the crowd. "And I'm not sure when this old ass is going to be back again."
Other special guests to feature at Joel's shows in recent years have included Kevin Bacon , Olivia Rodrigo and The Goo Goo Dollsâ John Rzeznik.
While he has continued to tour solidly in recent decades â including that remarkable Madison Square Garden residency â Joel's last solo album was 1993's River of Dreams , released 30 years ago.

American music legend, Billy Joel will perform his first show in Wales since 1980 next summer.
The iconic star will head to the Principality Stadium in Cardiff on Friday 9 August 2024.
The last time he played here was at Deeside Leisure Centre 43 years ago. Back in the 70s and 80s it hosted bands like Blondie, The Police and ACDC.Â
Joel has sold millions of albums across the world and thousands of fans are expected to travel to the Welsh capital to see his only European performance.
Nicknamed "The Piano Man" after the autobiographical track which became his first hit, Billy Joel's sold-out 2023 UK date at Hyde Park, saw him receive a glowing critical reception across the board, with one 4-star review calling it âa jubilant singalong.â
He has had a string of 33 Top 40 hits, all of which he has written himself over almost five decades and 23 Grammy nominations since his first recording contract in 1972.
Joel will be joined for this one-off show by Platinum-selling and Grammy-nominated singer Chris Isaak. The 'Wicked Game' star's career spans nearly forty years.
Isaak has thirteen critically acclaimed studio albums and twelve chart-topping singles under his belt.
He's also starred in several motion pictures and wrote music for the soundtracks of Eyes Wide Shut, True Romance, Wild at Heart, and Blue Velvet.
Tickets will go on sale Friday 15 December at 10.00 am.

Bruce Springsteen will also kick off the UK leg of the E Street Band's world tour in Cardiff on Sunday 5 May.

Live Review: Billy Joel â 7th July 2023 â BST Hyde Park, London, UK

There arenât too many musicians out there these days that come close to the success of Billy Joel. Having made his permanent mark in the music industry in the 70âs with his signature New York style of soft rock, Joel went on to become one of the best selling artists in the world. âI never thought I’d be doing this song in my 70âs. I never thought I’d be doing this gig in my 70âsâ he would tell the crowd ahead of his performance of Innocent Man at Londonâs famous Hyde Park. And what a hell of a gig it was!
We arrived to Hyde Park just in time for a stellar warm up performance by early-noughties hitmaker, Natasha Bedingfield. Dressed in a flowing cream number which was studded head to toe with jewels and pearls, the singer got the crowd singing along to some of the decades biggest pop numbers.
Thanking the crowd at one point for âputting me on the mapâ, singles that helped do exactly that were all out on full display under the unforgiving sun. Pocket of Sunshine and a shortened acapella version of Wild Horses showcased Bedingfieldâs effortlessly powerful vocals while the crowd had their chance to dance through early singles, Single and These Word s; both still retaining their pop freshness despite being released near to twenty years ago. A few covers were thrown in: a gorgeous version of Coldplay’s The Scientist had the crowd swaying along with the star and one of the best covers of Princeâs Purple Rain that we have heard, swept over the growing Hyde Park crowd and contained some of the most impressive vocals heard throughout Bedingfieldâs set.
Taking the heat and a few minor technical difficulties in her stride, the singer closed her time on stage with a flowing acoustic performance of Unwritten , a song that has become her signature hit and found its way into social media platforms in recent years, generating a whole new fanbase for the Brockley superstar.
While we were keen to catch a few songs by 80âs hitmaker Daryl Hall, we headed backstage to catch up with Natasha following her set to see how she felt about the performance and what she has in store for the rest of the year. You can check out the short video interview below:
As the sun continued to bake down on Londonâs Hyde Park, we gathered up a couple of drinks and made our way into the crowd to take position for the man of the hour! Billy Joel!
The Bronx-born Piano Man has created some of the most successful songs of the last century including Uptown Girl, The Longest Time, You May Be Right and River of Dreams and while he may not have recorded anything new in three decades, something he drew attention to last night, telling the crowd âI have some good news and some bad news. The bad news is I donât have anything new to play. The good news is that you wonât have to hear anything newâ, igniting the sold out park crowd with laughter â a hint of the comedic side of the songwriting legend at work as he dominates even the biggest of world stages with cool, charm and dad jokes behind his elusively dark glasses. With the singer pushing the numbers age-wise, the demand to see the key tinkering superstar has never been higher â as last nightâs remarkable performance in Londonâs Hyde Park displayed as the green space was quickly overflowing with the bodies of die hard Joel fans; most wearing concert t-shirts of previous tours or the latest BST merchandise.
With songs from over 5 decades to chose from, the night was set to be a spectacular one. And we have to remember; Joel has been selling out stadiums and open spaces like these for almost as long as he has been making music so playing to 65,000 people is like a walk in the parkâŠpun intended. Despite all of this however, the icon made the show feel intimate; gifting fans with banter or anecdotes ahead of or after almost every song and bringing us into his world and his experiences of recording some of the most cherished songs in the great American songbook.
A proud New Yorker, many of the the hits that paid homage to the Big Apple were dressed with backdrops of the cityon the large screens to add further grit and flavor to the performances. A delicate trapse through crowd voted Vienna and the gentle New York State of Mind had even the most rigid of concert goers singing along while Joel jokingly mentioned âDonât bulls**t me, you didnât buy that album, nobody bought that albumâ ahead of his performance of deep cut The Entertainer ; referring to 1774’s Streetlife Serenade while showing off the stars edgy showmanship that isnât confined just to the piano and songwriting.
Personal favourite The Longest Time was performed in original acapella form; his talented backing band (who shone in their own performances of River Deep Mountain High by backing singer Crystal Taliefero and a cover of Giacomo Pucciniâs Nessun Dorma by handsome guitarist Mike Delguidice) providing the vocal exchanges that make the song a real standout within the expansive Joel catalogue.
Flames lit up the giant screens that served as Joels backdrop during his performance of We Didnât Start The Fire as images of the lyrical nods were shown as a way for the crowd to remember the lines and sing along, while opening hit My Life proved one of the biggest numbers as the crowd dedicated themselves to singing the infectious title words with the singer with an energy that literally shook the ground of Hyde Park.
I donât know why I was as surprised as I was at the sheer power and youthfulness in Joel’s voice. Thinking it may have withered over time or that the range that has become so distinctive with Joel and his songs might have been lost to age, I was really blown away at how remarkable he sounded. He was as close to record quality as you could hope for and for a man in his 70âs, and all while retaining that New York charm for the ladies, giving the female fans a special moment as cameras focused in on them â many weeping as they watched the superstar on his rotating piano â during his flowing performance of She’s Always a Woman .
Joels encore delivered some of the best moments of the night with a fantastic singalong to The Beatles Hard Days Night , mega Joel hits including Big Shot, It’s Still Rock and Roll to Me and closing You May Be Right but it was signature hit, Uptown Girl that came with a surprise performance alongside Jonas Brothers frontman, Joe Jonas who danced excitedly alongside the iconic Piano Man; helping those remarkably high notes reach their fullest potential for the Hyde Park crowd.
During the show the cameras often presented us with a birds eye view of Joelâs piano; the musicians fingers moving frantically over the keys as he would belt out unweathered vocals and recount moments of his 50+ year career as one of the leading men in music. Joel has created a catalogue that goes fairly unmatched in music and most of the pieces that make up that career were delivered to us last night. It was, without doubt, one of the most memorable, vibrant and fun shows we have ever been to. Near the start of the show Joel jokingly commented, âIâm not sure when this old ass is going to be back again.â For that, we feel so thankful to have been a part of such a monumental show.

New Yorkâs quintessential son is one of the greatest musicians of our time. Joelâs songs have acted as personal and cultural touchstones for millions of people across five decades. Joelâs string of 33 Top 40 hits, all of which Joel has written himself, began with 1973âs autobiographical â Piano Man â. Written while Joel was playing in a Los Angeles lounge. In 2016, the Library of Congress selected âPiano Manâ for preservation in the National Recording Registry for its âcultural, historic and artistic significanceâ. The hits have continued for almost five decades, with three of Joelâs Top 40 songs – â Itâs Still Rock and Roll To Me â, â Tell Her About It â and â We Didnât Start The Fire â – peaking at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts and 23 Grammy nominations awarded to Joel since he signed his first recording contract in 1972.
Joel is one of the most engaging and best-selling live performers of our time, with songs like â Uptown Girl â, â Just The Way You Are â, â The Longest Time â and â Vienna â – amongst countless others. He began Madison Square Gardenâs first-ever music franchise in January 2014 that continues to this day, performing one show at The Garden each month. Joel’s record-breaking residency will end in July 2024 , a little more than 10 years after it first began, marking Joelâs 150 th lifetime show which have all sold out at the venue. Joelâs MSG shows have redefined the concept of residency; the scope and ambition of Joelâs residency, where he has played once a month at Madison Square Garden, is unprecedented.
The long list of accolades awarded to Joel across his career is testament to the revere given to him by fans, critics and fellow musicians alike. Joel was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame by his idol Ray Charles in 1999 – Joel has received the RIAAâs Diamond Award twice for Greatest Hits Volume I & Volume II and The Stranger, presented for albums that have sold over 10 million copies, He is the recipient of six GRAMMYÂź Awards, including the prestigious Grammy Legend Award, Joel has been inducted into the Songwriterâs Hall of Fame including the prestigious Johnny Mercer Award; and he was inducted by Barack and Michelle Obama at the 36th Annual Kennedy Center Honor; and he received a TONY AWARD for “Movin’ Out,” a Broadway musical based on Joelâs music.
Billy Joel at Principality Stadium in Cardiff is the only chance to see the star performer live in Europe next year and follows his sold out 2023 UK date at BST Hyde Park, which saw Joel receive a glowing critical reception across the board, including The Telegraph’s 4 star review calling his show â a jubilant singalong. â
Billy will be joined by special guest Chris Isaak. Over the course of his nearly forty-year career, Platinum-selling and GRAMMY-nominated singer & actor Chris Isaak has performed to sold-out crowds across the globe with his longtime band Silvertone. His music and film credits include thirteen critically acclaimed studio albums, twelve chart-topping singles along with several motion pictures, such as The Silence of the Lambs and That Thing You Do!. His work has also taken him behind the scenes, creating music for multiple film soundtracks, including Eyes Wide Shut, True Romance, Wild at Heart, and Blue Velvet. Isaak has starred in his own critically acclaimed television series The Chris Isaak Show on SHOWTIME, has previously served as a judge on The X Factor Australia, and hosted the music talk show, The Chris Isaak Hour on BIO. 2019 marked the 30th Anniversary of Isaakâs beloved Heart-Shaped World album, which includes his breakthrough classic âWicked Gameâ. Newly released Everybody Knows Itâs Christmas is Isaak’s second career Christmas album and features 13 tracks of originals and covers. Isaak was recently honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award for Performance by the Americana Honors.

For the past 10 years, Billy Joel’s residency at Madison Square Garden in New York City has been a smashing success for the legendary American musician. Since its commencement in 2014, the residency has consistently broken attendance records. This highly popular residency will conclude in 2024, which might be a bit of a bummer for Piano Man fans.

The good news is that Joel’s 2024 tour will include additional shows at Madison Square Garden as well as other venues. Stevie Nicks, Chris Isaak, and Sting will all be performing as supporting performers and co-headliners. The tour will take place in the US, Japan, and the UK, assuming additional tour dates wonât be announced.
Billy Joelâs upcoming 2024 tour will kick off on January 11 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The tour will come to a close (assuming no additional tour dates will be announced) on August 9 at Cardiff Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales.
Though Joel hasnât said much about the upcoming tour, he did give an interview earlier in 2023 in which he discussed the fact that his tours will feature his greatest hits, rather than new music. âWell, I didnât make that decision based on whether it was right or wrong,â Joel told Mikael Wood for the Los Angeles Times , âIt just felt like it was time for me to stop writing songs. I didnât have the same motivation anymore. You need inspiration to create good new music, and if you donât have it, donât bother.â
While his motivation for songwriting may have dwindled, his passion for performing certainly hasnât. And luckily for his fans, finding tickets to his upcoming 2024 tour is fairly straightforward. Ticketmaster and StubHub are the two main spots where tickets are available for general sale. Unfortunately, no presale events are currently active. Many of the tour dates in 2024 have already sold out, so if youâre trying to still reserve a spot, we recommend looking on Stubhub for third-party tickets.
A legendary personality in the realm of soft rock, Billy Joel became famous for his unique combination of rock and pop tunes, profoundly personal lyrics, and extraordinary talent for conveying stories through song. His career took off in the ’70s, when singles like “Just the Way You Are” and “Piano Man” were huge hits. His innovative melodies and profound emotional depth have garnered him international praise, several accolades (ranging from Grammys to Tonys), and a lasting place in music history.
While Joel hasnât announced a farewell tour, the end of his extremely popular Madison Square Garden residency will be the end of an era for fans. His upcoming 2024 tour is sure to highlight Joel’s ability to blend classic and contemporary musical elements, promising an unforgettable experience for fans around the world.
This is definitely not the tour to wait around to buy tickets for. Many of the tour dates in 2024 have already sold out, though some fans might get lucky and find tickets through StubHub . Donât wait around and reserve your seats before itâs too late!

Billy Joel, born William Martin "Billy" Joel is an American pianist, singer-songwriter, and composer, born on May 9th 1949 in New York, America.
Billy was born into a musical family, his Father being a pianist encouraged him to learn the piano at an early age and was taught by American pianist Morton Estrin and musician Timothy Ford.
The New York born musician decided to pursue a music career after being inspired by The Beatles. He went on to find a group named 'The Echoes' who were similar to The Beatles and specialised in British Invasion covers. The band started to record in studios in 1965, but Billy was unfortunately kicked out of the band as he refused to wear the matching outfits worn by the other members. However, Billy went on to play the piano solo for various productions and recordings.
Eventually he recorded his first solo studio album, released in 1971, named "Cold Spring Harbour". This was not as successful as he had hope however, and later signed with Columbia and released another album with them in 1973, named "Piano Man".
Finally a breakthrough for the talented pianist, since the release of his first hit song, "Piano Man", Billy Joel famously became the 6th best selling recording artist and the third best-selling solo artist in America.
He has impressively been included into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Long Island Music Hall of Fame in his music career.
Live reviews
Billy Joel is a legendary singer-songwriter and pianist. Since the release his 1973 hit, âPiano Manâ, Billy Joel has become the USAâs sixth best-selling recording ever. He is currently performing monthly shows at New Yorkâs Madison Square Gardens. These sell-out shows are grand affairs.
As expected, each gig is a sell-out. Each month the crowd gathers, bursting with anticipation. As Billy Joel takes to the piano, a deafening roar of yells, whoops and claps erupts. Despite undertaking a musical residency, Billy is careful to avoid repetition. The set list changes each month and the songwriter freely and spontaneously speaks to the audience between numbers.
Aprilâs set opened with âMiami 2017.â Always a showman, Billy began with a true crowd-pleaser. This track showcased the singerâs powerful and near-faultless vocals, setting the scene for the rest of the evening. This monthâs crafted set list demonstrated Billyâs intricate understanding of what makes a good a show. The performer guided his audience through a mixture of old classics, new compositions and inventive covers. Indeed, reflecting on his long career and progressing years, Billy gave an apt rendition of The Beatles' âWhen I'm Sixty-Four.â The concert finished on a high. The whole crowd exuberantly sang along to âOnly the Good Die Youngâ and were treated to Mark Riveraâs ever-brilliant sax playing.

The atmosphere was electric from the start. The man himself was just amazing. So much energy and humour coupled with a keen insight can't begin to describe the performance from this 70 year old gentleman.
His voice has aged and mellowed to a way that really enhances his songs.
He played a good variety of music spanning all of his long career. From his 80s classics to some of the lesser played, but brilliant deeper music from the late 70s.
When he played the his signature song, Piano Man, you could hear it all the way to Scotland. It was out of this world.
The band were simply brilliant. They are so talented that when one of his group stood up and sang 'Nessun Dorma', you could of heard a pin drop in Wembley Stadium. The resulting applause was like thunder that just rolled on and on.
A really fantastic night out that I will remember for the rest of my life.
The Billy Joel concert 6-2-18 was one truly fabulous show! Loved every minute of it he is ab awesome entertainer and so talented along with the rest of his band, so many talented people on one stage. He keeps it real and gives the crowd what they want with song choices and true life facts!! Everyone in attendance tonight got the please of seeing him perform with his daughter Alexa Ray who is beautiful and talented We also had the pleasure of seeing his ex Christie Brinkley (Alexa's mom) singing Uptown Girl on the jumbo screen!!! When they came back out for the on-core the house was truly rockin' everyone was up on their feet singing and dancing. It is no wonder that he sells out each performance, now in year number five, I will most certainly be at another one of his concerts!!! Love, love, love this concert, don't miss if you ever have the chance to go!!!
There's not much else that can be said about Billy Joel that hasn't already been written. Once again he wowed the fans in Philly, only new thing to add was that this particular night he was also celebrating the birth of his second daughter so he threw out cigars to the crowd! Our beloved Philly Phanactic was even in attendance rockin to the tunes. Although he stopped writing new songs it doesn't seem to matter to his audience. The kids of today still love his music as do us that have been following him for many decades.
My particular favorite of the night was/is when he sang "Goodnight Saigon". My chest vibrates every time I hear the chopper blades leading into the song & then at the conclusion when our Vets take the stage my heart soars with love & gratitude. We all start chanting USA, USA.... need I say more?
All I can add is I that I loved every bit of it!
The concert was amazing. Billy is truly the entertainer! He told a complex story of his life by singing a variety of songs, both his own and other performers'. All the musicians on the stage were fantastic. They could play multiple instruments, sing and entertain to the max. Billy was unbelievable! So full of energy and so talented. I loved this concert.
Some of the people around me got frustrated when he performed other artists' songs. They shouted out that Billy had so many of his own hits that he should use the time to perform his own songs. I felt pleased and happily surprised to be allowed to experience Billy performing so many different genres of music, so I didn't share their frustration. It should be noted that he did perform lots of his greatest hits, more and more towards the end of the concert.
All in all the concert was a wonderful experience.
The show started almost 1/2 hour late, but Billy Joel did not disappoint. The concert went over 2 hours playing to a packed house. Between 20-25 original BJ tunes were performed with a few others we all know and love to sing along with. His daughter Alexa Rae joined him on stage for âBaby Grandâ which was nice to see. Each song highlighted the various band members and they were introduced accordingly; all are great musicians and vocalists. We all sang along to Piano Man, his last song of the night. After chanting for an encore, the band came back and played an additional 3 songs capping it off with Billy Joel placing a turkey hat upon his head while belting out âYou may be right, I may be crazy...â interjecting a small part of Led Zepplinâs Rock n Roll into the song.
Billy âs mantra after many of his tunes: And then we got divorced. Lol.
With the exception of 20 minutes of manure or sewage smell this was an epic night
Got down around 4:30
Got great parking (1st spot two sides protected)
Snagged the last outdoor patio seating at the Hard Rock Cafe
Had onion rings to share, a Waldorf salad and Salmon to share and people watched till it was time to go to the concert
THE SEATS WERE
The concert was amazing
The acoustics were amazing
His voice was 95% of him in his prime
The song set was great and he offered the audience a choose of two songs on about 4 songs and the audience voted with there cheers
At the end of the concert it was slow getting to the car but I threaded thru traffic to a bathroom for Karen as the lineups for women were terrible
Billy was simply stunning and laid on a 2 1/2 hour spectacle that tops anything I've seen. He combined his classics with great banter and interplay with the audience.
From his meandering off into hard days night, through in the jungle and land of hope and glory. He supported his long term roadie through a great rendition of highway to hell and backing vocalist beautifully delivered nessum dorma to the crowds delight.
A night to remember from a true legend, so much so I'm seriously considering a trip to New York to catch the show at the garden.
Thank you Billy, you gave us the best time.
As someone who is just finishing up high school and preparing for college, hearing Vienna made me cry.
"Slow down, you crazy child
You're so ambitious for a juvenile
But then if you're so smart, then tell me
Why are you still so afraid?
Where's the fire, what's the hurry about?
You'd better cool it off before you burn it out
You've got so much to do
And only so many hours in a day"
It made me reflect more on my current mindset about life. I didn't know how much more powerful this song could be when performed live.
My Dear Mr. Joel,
Thank you for the wonderful performance! Your music means so much to me and has been for decades. I feel blessed and thankful for being able to see you. This concert was one for my life and the first time. Itâs been one of my life goals to attend your concerts in Madison Square Garden but this is the first opportunity to see you. And I wasnât about to miss you.
The concert last night was fabulous you havenât skipped a beat the band was awesome thank you and God bless.

Billy Joel to return with only his second new solo song since 1993
Turn the Lights Back On will be released on 1 February, and is described as âushering in the next chapter of his storyâ
Billy Joel is set to return with his first new solo single since 2007 â and only his second since 1993.
Turn the Lights Back On will be released on 1 February, appearing on streaming services and as a 7-in vinyl record. It is co-written by Joel and its producer Freddy Wexler, a mainstream pop figure with credits on tracks by artists such as Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez. Two other co-writers include British pop mainstay Wayne Hector, the man behind numerous No 1 singles for Westlife, JLS and more.
Joel had teased the new song in an onstage video posted to his TikTok account last month, saying âwe got a little something weâre working on you might hear some timeâ. Promotional materials refer to Joelâs single as âushering in the next chapter of his storyâ, possibly alluding to further new material.
With his cheerfully un-hip pop-rock style, Joel has charmed the mainstream since his breakthrough in the early 1970s, selling more than 160m records worldwide thanks to hits such as Uptown Girl and We Didnât Start the Fire, and topping the US album chart four times.
He retired from songwriting following 1993âs US chart-topper River of Dreams, later explaining: âI couldnât be as good as I wanted to be. I was always trying to feel like there was a real progression in my work, and eventually I realised I was only going to be X good. Because of that I knew I was going to beat myself up for not being better. So I stopped. Thatâs it.â Since then there have been occasional cover versions but he has only released one new solo single, 2007âs All My Life.
Joel has continued to tour, though, weathering the occasional moment of doubt such as in 2010 when he told his band he was considering quitting. In 2018 he told Vulture that he was adapting his setlist to reflect his age and what he saw as a worsening voice: âIâm already struggling. I wrote most of the songs that Iâm doing when I was in my 20s and 30s and it ainât easy to hit those notes in my 60s. Weâve dropped the keys of some songs already. Hopefully itâs not that noticeable.â
A four-star Guardian review of his 2023 concert in Londonâs Hyde Park described him as âa precision-tooled entertainment machineâ and âan expert pasticheur, re-inhabiting the sounds of his youth: Motown, doo-wop, Tin Pan Alleyâ.
He is set to conclude his long-running residency at New Yorkâs Madison Square Garden in July, ending with his 150th show in the monthly series. His other tour dates this year include co-headlining sets with Stevie Nicks and, separately, Sting.

Freddy Wexler On Helping Billy Joel "Turn The Lights Back On" â At The 2024 GRAMMYs And Beyond
"Part of what was so beautiful for me to see on GRAMMY night was the respect and adoration that people of all ages and from all genres have for Billy Joel," Wexler says of Joel's 2024 GRAMMYs performance of their co-written "Turn The Lights Back On."
They say to not meet your heroes. But when Freddy Wexler â a lifelong Billy Joel fan â did just that, it was as if Joel walked straight out of his record collection.
"I think the truth is none of it is that surprising," the 37-year-old songwriter and producer tells GRAMMY.com. "That's the best part. From his music, I would've thought this is a humble, brilliant everyman who probably walks around with a very grounded perspective, and that's exactly who he is."
That groundedness made possible "Turn the Lights Back On" â the hit comeback single they co-wrote, and Wexler co-produced; Joel performed a resplendent version at the 2024 GRAMMYs with Laufey . Joel hadn't released a pop album since 1993's River of Dreams ; for him to return to the throne would take an awfully demonstrative song, true to his life.
"I think it's a very raw, honest, real perspective that is true to Billy," Wexler explains. "I think it's the first time we've heard him acknowledge mistakes and regret in quite this way."
Specifically, Joel's return highlights his regret over spending three decades mostly on the bench, largely absent from the pop scene. As Joel wonders aloud in the stirring, arpeggiated chorus, "Is there still time for forgiveness?"
"Forgiveness" is a curious word. Why would the five-time GRAMMY winner and 23-time nominee possibly need to seek forgiveness? Regardless â as the song goes â he's "tryin' to find the magic/ That we lost somehow." The song's message â an attempt to recapture a lost essence â transcends Joel's personal headspace, connecting with a universal longing and nostalgia.
Read on for an interview with Wexler about the impact of "Turn the Lights Back On," why he thinks Joel took such an extended sabbatical, the prospect of more new music, and much more.
This interview has been edited for clarity.
** You did a great interview with Rolling Stone ahead of the 2024 GRAMMYs . Now, we're on the other side of it; you got to see how it went down on the telecast, and resonated with the audience and world. What was that like? **
It's why I make music â to hopefully make people feel something. This song has really resonated in such a big way. More than looking at its commercial success on the charts or on radio, which has been awesome to see, the comments on Instagram and YouTube have been the most rewarding part of it.
Why do you think it resonated? Beyond the king picking up his crown again?
I don't think the song is trying to be anything it's not. I think it's a very raw, honest, real perspective that is true to Billy. I think it's the first time we've heard him acknowledge mistakes and regret in quite this way. And to hear him do it in a hopeful way where he's asking, "Is it too late for forgiveness?" is just very moving, I think.
Forgiveness? That's interesting. What would any of us need to forgive him?
He has said in other interviews, "Sometimes people say they have no regrets at the end of their life." And he said, "I don't think that's possible. If you've lived a full life, of course you have regrets." He has said that he has many things he wishes he would've done differently. This is an opportunity to express that.
I think what's interesting about the song is it has found meaning in various ways with various people and listeners. Some people imagine Billy is singing to former lovers or friends. Other people imagine Billy is singing to his fans asking, "Did I wait too long to record again?" Other people wonder if Billy is singing to the songwriting Gods and muses. Did I wait too long to write again?
In Israel, where the song was number one â or is number one, I haven't checked today â I think the song's taken on the meaning of just wanting things to be normal, wanting hostages to come home and turn the lights back on. So, you never know where a song is going to resonate, but I think that Billy just found his own meaning with it.
You know the discography front to back. What lines can you draw from "Turn the Lights Back On" to past works?
I think it draws on various pieces of his catalog, right? "She's Always a Woman" has a sort of piano arpeggio in the chorus. To me, it feels like a natural progression. It feels like, on the one hand, it's a new song. On the other, it could have come out right after River of Dreams . To me, it just kind of feels natural.
** Back when you spoke with Rolling Stone , you said you couldn't wait to hear "Turn the Lights Back On" at Madison Square Garden. How'd it sound? **
Amazing. Billy is a consummate live performer. I think he's one of the few artists where everything is better live, and everything is always a little bit different each time it's played live.
It's been really cool to watch Billy and the band continue to change and improve the song and the song's dynamics for the show. He told me tonight that tomorrow night in Tampa, I think they're going to try to play with the key of the song, potentially â try it a half a step higher.
Those are the sort of things I think great artists do, right? It's different from being on a certain type of tour where every single song is the same, the set list is the same, the key is the same, the arrangements are the same.
With Billy, there's a lot of feeling and, "Hey, why don't we try it this way? Let's play it a little faster. Let's play it a little slower. Let's try it in a different key." I just think that's super cool. You have to be a really good musician to just do that on the fly.
What have you learned from him that applies to your music making, writ large?
I've learned so much from him. As Olivia Rodrigo said to us at GRAMMY rehearsals, "He's the blueprint when it comes to songwriting."
He has helped raise the bar for me when it comes to melodies and lyrics, but the thing I keep coming back to is he's reminded me that even the greatest artists and songwriters ever sometimes forget how great they are. I think we need to be careful not to give that inner voice and inner critic too much power.
Can you talk about how the music video came to be?
Well, I had a dream that Billy was singing the opening two lines of the song, but it was a 25-year-old version of Billy. It was arresting.
When I woke up, I sort of had the vision for the video, which was one set, an empty venue of some kind, and four Billy Joels. The Billy Joel that really exists today, but then three Billys from three iconic eras where each Billy would seamlessly pick up the song where the other left off.
The idea behind that was to sort of accentuate the question of the song â did I wait too long to turn the lights back on?
And so, to kind of take us through time and through all these years, I teamed up with an amazing co-director, Warren Fu, who's done everything from Dua Lipa to Daft Punk , and an artificial intelligence company called Deep Voodoo to make that vision possible.
What I'm driven by is the opportunity to create conversations, cultural moments, things that make people feel something. What was cool here is as scary as AI is â and I think it is scary in many ways â we were able to give an example of how you can use it in a positive way to execute a creative artistic vision that previously would've been impossible to execute.
Yeah, so I'm pleased with it and I'm thankful that Billy did a video. He didn't have to do one, but he liked the idea of it. He felt it was different, and I think he was moved by it as well.
What do you think is the next step here?
It's been a really rewarding process. And Billy is open-minded, which is really cool for an artist of that level, who's not a new artist by any stretch. To actually be described as being in a place in his life where he's open-minded, means anything is possible. I could tell you that I would love there to be more music.
I'd love to get your honest appraisal. And I know you're not him. But his last pop album was released 31 years ago. In that long interim, what do you think was going on with him, creatively?
Look, I'm not Billy Joel, but I think there were a number of factors going on with him. Somewhere along the way, I think he stopped having fun with music, which is the reason he got into it, or which is a big part of the reason he got into it. When it stopped being fun, I don't think he really wanted to do it anymore.
Another piece to it is that Billy is a perfectionist, and that perfectionism is evident in the caliber of his songwriting. Having always written 100 percent of his songs, Billy at some point probably found that process to be painstaking, to try to hit that bar where he's probably wondering in his head, What would Beethoven think of this? What would Leonard Bernstein think of this?
I think part of what was different here was that, perhaps, there was something liberating about "Turn the Lights Back On" being a seed that was brought to Billy. In this way, he could be a little disconnected from it, where maybe he didn't have to have the self-imposed pressure that he would if it was an idea that he'd been trying to finish for a while.
Ironically, he still made it. Well, there's no "ironically," but I think that's it. There's something to that.

GRAMMY U Reps Experience GRAMMY Week Like Never Before Thanks To The Recording Academy & United Airlines
United Airlines flew the GRAMMY U Representatives out to L.A. for an unforgettable 2024 GRAMMY Week. The trip provided significant professional development in music, and the Reps savored every moment. Take a look at the GRAMMY U Repsâ inspirational week.
Thanks to United Airlines' partnership with the Recording Academy, the students traveled from all over the country to Los Angeles and met in person for the first time. In past years, GRAMMY U Reps have only been able to attend a few select events in addition to the GRAMMY Awards on Sunday. But because of United Airlines, these National and Chapter Reps were able to experience the music industryâs most exhilarating week.
Come with the GRAMMY U Reps as they experience Musicâs Biggest Night, behind-the-scenes tours, and events highlighting various initiatives within the music industry during GRAMMY Week 2024. Learn how to apply to GRAMMY U here .
Tuesday: Travel Day
The GRAMMY U group chat was exploding with excited messages as we arrived at the airport early Tuesday morning. Each Rep was about to meet their co-workers â many of whom had only connected virtually â and gain the experience of a lifetime.Â
United flew all 14 Reps to Los Angeles with exceptional timing, service, and care â even though we were traveling to work at GRAMMY Week, it felt like we were getting celebrity treatment. Once we touched down in L.A., we ran to the United baggage claim to hug our friends and capture the experience to share with fellow GRAMMY U members.

After grabbing lunch near our hotel in downtown L.A., we made it to the Recording Academy Los Angeles Chapter Office in Santa Monica for our first in-person team meeting. Sporting new custom GRAMMY U jackets, T-shirts, and hats, we prepared for our signature GRAMMY Week event, a Masterclass with actress/GRAMMY-nominated R&B artist Halle Bailey .Â
Reps were briefed on plans for the week, then took an office tour where we spotted multiple golden gramophones. Since we work remotely year-round, this was our first time getting to see where all the magic happens.
Wednesday: Behind-The-Scenes & Behind The Music
On Wednesday, we were up bright and early to explore the Crypto.com Arena and learn about the behind-the-scenes preparation it takes to host the GRAMMY Awards each year.Â
Jody Kolozsvari, Associate Producer of the GRAMMYs and a GRAMMY U alum, guided us around the arena. He also introduced us to the incredible audio, mixing, communications, and production teams as well as Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr .Â
"Walking intoCrypto.com Arena and seeing the GRAMMY stage being built was a very surreal moment," said Sara Hudson, GRAMMY U's New York Chapter Rep. "Meeting so many of the people behind the show and witnessing the hard work that is put into producing the GRAMMY Awards made my passion for working in live music grow even more."
Later that night, Philadelphia Chapter Rep Tamara Tondreau and Los Angeles Chapter Rep Jade Bacon worked as GRAMMY U press at the A Celebration of Craft event, a collaboration between the Recording Academy Producers and Engineers Wing and Songwriters and Composers Wing. This was the very first time GRAMMY U Reps were invited to this exclusive event; Tamara, a songwriter herself, called this event "unforgettable."
"Since songwriting sparked my interest in the music industry, it was inspiring to be in the room with so many talented creatives," Tamara says. "Networking with professionals who hold multiple roles in the industry encouraged me and reaffirmed my goal of maintaining both business and creative aspects in my career."

Thursday: Fostering Community & Culture
Hosted at GRAMMY House , Thursday morning started with a beautiful luncheon at the inaugural A Celebration of Women in the Mix . This event made space for women in the music industry to gather and support one another, recognizing all of the strides made in a male-dominated field.Â
Twelve of the 14 Reps identify as women, and this was a special moment to meet some of the industry leaders that we look up to as role models. Networking with female artists, managers, and producers who are laying the groundwork for our generation was a powerful moment we will never forget.
After delivering the keynote speech, Ty Stiklorius, the founder of management company Friends at Work, spoke with some of the GRAMMY U Reps.
"Having a conversation with such an established female in the music industry was incredibly inspiring," says Memphis Rep. Shannon Conte. "After this moment of mentorship and encouragement, I left the event feeling much more confident in my ability to one day succeed in becoming an artist manager."
Dressing up in our finest suits and gowns, we hit the town to attend the exclusive Black Music Collective âs 2024 Recording Academy Honors event, where legends Mariah Carey and Lenny Kravitz accepted Global Impact Awards. Sitting in the same room as these superstars was awe-inspiring, and it was an honor to see how the Black community was celebrated during GRAMMY Week.
GRAMMY U Reps Shaneel Young, Jade Bacon, and Chloe Sarmiento hosted interviews for our social media, highlighting the fashion of dozens of high-profile attendees including Adam Blackstone , Jordin Sparks , Flavor Flav , and Erica Campbell as they walked the signature black carpet. The excitement of the press line on the black carpet provided Reps with first-hand experience of what a career in press and publicity could look like.Â
GRAMMY U DC Rep Shaneel Young aspires to work in music marketing. "Interviewing some of the most influential people in the industry about my passions: music, fashion, and culture, will be a moment I remember for the rest of my career," she reflects.
Reps at Black Music Collectiveâs Recording Academy HonorsâGRAMMY U
These two spectacular events immersed us in the initiatives the Recording Academy has implemented to celebrate diversity and representation in music, and we are so honored to be a part of the companyâs continued mission.
Friday: Work Hard, Play Hard
After months spent planning our signature GRAMMY Week event, the GRAMMY U Masterclass with Halle Bailey , presented by Mastercard, we finally saw the fruits of our labor come to life. This year, we welcomed over 500 attendees in person, with members from every Chapter flying in to experience the event together at GRAMMY House.
GRAMMY U PNW Rep Chloe Sarmiento worked as talent lead and interacted directly with Halle Bailey and her team. "It was incredibly fulfilling to see the event come together on-site in Los Angeles after weeks of working on it from home," Chloe says. "Halle and her team were so great to work with, and I couldnât have asked for a better speaker for the Masterclass!"
Working with experienced Recording Academy staff onsite further enlightened us about all things event production. From talent handling and partnerships to working radios and managing the stage, we were excited to execute a large-scale event with all of the Reps at GRAMMY House.
After a successful Masterclass, the Reps split up for the evening to conquer even more GRAMMY Week events. Half the group went to the #GRAMMYsNextGen party to spread the word about membership, host a photobooth, and interact with influencers and emerging performers. We met hip-hop duo Flyana Boss , and some of our other celebrity sightings included Laura Marano and Milo Manheim. It was inspiring to see other young professionals who have established themselves in the entertainment industry so early in their careers.
Mastercard surprised us with an entire seated table at the exclusive MusiCares Person Of The Year Gala honoring Jon Bon Jovi . It was an outstanding evening honoring the rock icon and the many ways he has given back to the music community. Following a live auction, Brandy Clark , Lainey Wilson , Jelly Roll , Shania Twain , and others performed some of Bon Joviâs biggest hits â Bon Jovi even graced the stage with Bruce Springsteen for a special rendition of "Who Says You Canât Go Home."Â
The Reps were incredibly grateful to United and Mastercard for granting us the opportunity to witness these exclusive live performances. To see the music community come together to honor a legend while giving back and furthering the mission of MusiCares is a heartwarming aspect of the music industry we donât get to witness every day.
Reps with Sabrina Carpenter at the Person of the Year GalaâGRAMMY U
GRAMMY U Chicago Rep Rachel Owen was one of the lucky attendees able to watch the thrilling performances while mingling in the crowd with other musicians like Sabrina Carpenter and David Archuleta.
"To even be in the same room as Shania Twain is an honor, sheâs timeless and more exquisite than I could've even imagined," Owen says. "To see her perform live to Jon Bon Jovi is the type of moment you just never take for granted."
Saturday: Divide & Conquer
Saturday was jam-packed with events. Back again at GRAMMY House, a group of Reps attended the Best New Artist Spotlight , where nominees discussed their breakthrough years and what it means to be considered a "new artist." From upstarts Ice Spice and Gracie Abrams to the long musical journey of Victoria MonĂ©t , The War and Treaty , and Jelly Roll , these diverse perspectives all stressed that each person has a unique career timeline and reminded us as students to practice perseverance and patience as we navigate this industry.Â
Various Reps continued at GRAMMY House, some working as press at the #GRAMMYsNextGen Ambassador Power Brunch and the first-ever Academy Proud event, celebrating LGBTQIA+ voices.
A handful of us worked as GRAMMY U press at the Special Merit Awards ceremony and subsequent celebration. Being a part of these exclusive events and witnessing historic moments like the presentation of Lifetime Achievement Awards was truly impactful. We interviewed nominees at the celebration, including boygenius engineer Owen Lantz (the supergroup would win their first three GRAMMYs the very next day.)
Hundreds of nominees attended the Special Merit Awards and Celebration, proudly displaying their blue medallions and glowing as they took their official GRAMMY nominee photos; the hopeful and energetic spirit of the event fueled our drive to succeed in this industry even more.
Sunday: And The GRAMMY Goes ToâŠ
Sunday morning was the day everyone had all been waiting for: the 66th GRAMMY Awards! After getting our glam on, the GRAMMY U Reps got to walk the red carpet for the first time ever. We took tons of photos and videos to commemorate this special moment and share our experience with friends and family.
While most of the Reps were posing on the carpet, Pierson, Jasmine, Rachel, and Chloe had the honor of being trophy presenters during the GRAMMY Premiere Ceremony . This was the first time GRAMMY U Reps from across the country were given the honor of being up close and personal during artists' career-defining moments.
Reps on the GRAMMYs Red CarpetâAndrew Sankovich Â
Moving into Crypto.com Arena to be seated for the telecast portion of the evening, the GRAMMY U Reps were ecstatic to watch the ceremony in person. As legends like Joni Mitchell , Billy Joel , Tracy Chapman , and Stevie Wonder blazed on stage, all the Reps were singing and dancing along, thrilled to be a part of Musicâs Biggest Night. Phenomenal performances from nominees SZA , Billie Eilish , Olivia Rodrigo , Dua Lipa , Miley Cyrus , and Luke Combs were equally captivating.Â
Witnessing the live telecast after experiencing so much behind-the-scenes production exemplified how rewarding the music industry can be, and how prestigious winning a GRAMMY truly is. The quiet suspense before a winner was announced and the roars that followed created a rollercoaster of emotions that took our breath away.
Immediately afterward, we were off to enjoy the official GRAMMYs After-Party  â and not even the constant showers could not rain on our parade. The Reps hit the dancefloor as soon as NE-YO took the stage, and hearing "Time of Our Lives" felt especially relatable.Â
As we headed back home on our United flights, we reflected on an exhilarating GRAMMY Week. Not only were we able to be part of exclusive events, but we also interacted with artists, learned from experts, and grew exponentially. Experiencing these moments with the other Reps brought our team closer, while meeting members and peers showed the expansive community GRAMMY U is cultivating.Â
Because of United, we witnessed all the Recording Academy does for the music industry. After GRAMMY Week, we feel more inspired and empowered than ever to lead the next generation of the music industry.

South African Singer Tyla Won The Inaugural Best African Music Performance Category At The 2024 GRAMMYs. What Does It Mean For African Music On The Global Stage?
While Afrobeats and amapiano are certainly crossing over in America, Tylaâs win reflects how Western influence is often necessary for African music to transcend the continent. Is "Water" what African music needs to blossom?
As the first recipient of the inaugural Best African Music Performance GRAMMY Award, South African songstress Tyla has officially etched her name into history. At the 2024 GRAMMYs , the 22-year-old's amapiano-infused Afro pop hit "Water" beat out several long-established names in African music.
While Tyla's success on Music's Biggest Night stresses the Recording Academy's continued efforts to showcase diverse African music, her victory is more of a one-armed hug rather than a full, legs-off-the-ground embrace of African music.Â
This is chiefly because "Water" was successful and marketable for its use of Western pop influences. While Afrobeats and amapiano are certainly crossing over in America , bestowing a golden gramophone upon an artist whose work reflects familiar sounds is a curious step forward for African music. Still, Tyla's win may foster a greater embrace of the African sound, and the virality and pervasiveness of "Water" propelled the Johannesburg-born singer/songwriter to unheard of heights.Â
"Water" hit No. 1 on the Billboard U.S. Afrobeats Songs and Hip-Hop/R&B charts, and became the first African song to enter the Billboard Hot 100 since 1968. The track peaked at No. 7, making Tyla the highest-charting African female solo musician in Billboard history. The "Water" dance challenge on TikTok further pushed the track into the global sphere, and the song has been featured in over 1.5 million videos.
The widespread appeal of "Water" is a culmination of elements, notably a fusion of Western pop with subtler amapiano influences. The song melds sleek American R&B and pop compositions with the log drums and piano trails synonymous with the South African amapiano genre.Â

Indeed, most musical genres (regardless of continent of origin) draw inspiration from and contribute back to each other. The resulting music transcends regional boundaries and appeals globally â and Tyla's "Water" is proof of this resonance. Yet it also reflects how a major Western influence is often necessary for African music to transcend the continent.Â
The Recording Academy's new Category was designed to highlight "strong elements of African cultural significance," said Shawn Thwaites, Recording Academy Awards Project Manager and author of the Category. In describing eligibility for the Best African Music Performance Category, Thwaites noted that songs must feature "a stylistic intention, song structure, lyrical content and/or musical representation found in Africa and the African diaspora."Â
Still, when it comes to recognizing lesser known genres â from South Africa's gqom to Tanzaniaâs singeli and Ghanaâs asakaa â the global audience still has a long way to go.
"We need to go deeper and in more detail within different genres of music. We know there are multiple different types of music â hundreds of genres, in fact â coming from Africa and from all 54 countries on the continent," Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. told GRAMMY.com after his three trips to the vibrant continent. "I'd love to see us be able to honor even more music from Africa and other areas of the world."
Thwaites hopes that celebrating the diversity of African music will also lead to greater cultural exchange. Eventually, this could lead to "more collaborations between artists of different genres and more artist relations between labels and executives in America," he said.Â
But for this progression to happen correctly, there has to be a cultural education about the music within the continent and it's something Ghazi Shami , CEO/Founder of Empire Records, Distribution and Publishing â who consulted with the Recording Academy on the new Category â is looking forward to watching develop.Â
"I think we'll see expanded categories in African music in the years to come, but this is a great start toward recognizing the merits and impact of African music," he told GRAMMY.com prior to the ceremony.Â
Tyla's GRAMMY win is an exceptional achievement â particularly so for a young African woman. Popular African music has often been skewed towards male artists. At the 2023 GRAMMYs , Tems became the only female solo artist currently living in Nigeria to win a GRAMMY. ( Sade , who was born in Nigeria, has won four GRAMMYs but lives in the U.K.)
A similar trend is observed in South Africa, where Miriam Makeba was both Africa's first GRAMMY winner and the country's solo female vocalist to win prior to Tyla.Â
Tyla's win is a beacon to other young female performers in Africa â including fellow Category nominee Ayra Starr and singer/songwriter and producer Bloody Civilian â proving that female artists can and will be recognized, regardless of their country of origin. It also demonstrates how the distance between African artists and international prestige has been shortened, thus furthering the likelihood of artistic innovation.
Her win is also notable in a Category stacked with Nigerian artists. Of the five nominated works, "Water" is the only one not created by an artist of Nigerian descent or currently living in Nigeria. (Though South African producer Musa Keys is featured on Davido 's nominated "UNAVAILABLE.") Although South Africa has a lengthy history at the GRAMMY Awards, Tyla is proof the world is listening to what her country has to offer.Â
While her fellow nominees â Starr, Burna Boy , Davido, ASAKE & Olamide  â and artists such as Wizkid have also shouldered the responsibility for the globalization of popular African music, there is still a long road ahead.Â
Tylaâs win holds significant promise for African music as pop music. While "Water" certainly has noticeable South African elements, its Western appeal may partially lay in its use of familiar sounds. For Africa to truly win, the world has to embrace African music for what it is, and not for what it's trying to be.Â

How The Latin GRAMMYS Brought Latin Music Excellence To The 2024 GRAMMYs
Latin music was celebrated throughout GRAMMY Week and on Music's Biggest Night. Read on for the many ways Latin music excellence was showcased at the 204 GRAMMYs.
The 2023 Latin GRAMMYs may have occurred months ago and thousands of miles away, but the leading lights in Latin music also shined at the 66th GRAMMY Awards . From historic wins and meaningful nominations, to electric performances and interesting installations, Latin music excellence was everywhere.Â
In anticipation of the 25th anniversary of the Latin GRAMMYs in 2024, the exclusive GRAMMY House â the site of multiple GRAMMY Week events â included a significant installation dedicated to the Biggest Night In Latin Music.
The cylindrical display showcased some of the biggest moments in Latin GRAMMY history, including images, facts, and even a real Latin GRAMMY award.Â
The celebration of Latin music continued throughout GRAMMY Week, with several Latin GRAMMY-winning artists also winning on the GRAMMY stage. Among the major moments at the 2024 GRAMMYs, Karol G won her first golden gramophone for her 2023 LP Mañana SerĂĄ Bonito . "This is my first time at GRAMMYs, and this is my first time holding my own GRAMMY," the Colombian songstress exclaimed during her acceptance speech. Â
MĂșsica Mexicana star Peso Pluma also took home his first GRAMMY; his album GĂNESIS won in the Best MĂșsica Mexicana Album (Including Tejano) Category.
Premiere Ceremony presenter Natalia Lafourcade â whose Todas Las Flores won big at the 2023 Latin GRAMMYs â also took home the GRAMMY Award for Best Latin Rock or Alternative Album. She tied in the Category with Juanes .Â
Premiere Ceremony performer Gabby Moreno also took home a GRAMMY Award for Best Latin Pop Album for her album X MĂ (Vol. 1) .Â
Beyond the stage, Latin artists graced the red carpet and the nominations list. For example, producer and songwriter Edgar Barrera was the only Latino nominated in the Songwriter Of The Year, Non-Classical Category.

Billy Joel and Sting Perform Two of Their Most Classic Songs Together on Their First Co-Headlining Tour Date
T he two rock legends teamed up to perform "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" and "Big Man on Mulberry Street" at their joint show at Tampa's Raymond James Stadium on Saturday
Billy Joel and Sting arenât passing up the opportunity to rock out together on their joint headlining tour!
As the Piano Man, 74, and The Police frontman, 72, kicked off their string of co-headlining shows in Tampa, Florida at Raymond James Stadium on Saturday, the two rock legends surprised the crowd by joining each other on several songs. The Rock and Roll Hall of Famers teamed up to duet on two songs: The Policeâs âEvery Little Thing She Does Is Magicâ and Joelâs âBig Man on Mulberry Street.â
Fans captured footage of Joel and Sting joining forces that they posted to YouTube.
The British star played his headlining set first, which Joel introduced and then stayed on stage so they could play his opening song together, according to the fan-recorded videos .

âI saw this guy when he came with his band to the States and I was blown away when I saw him â this was in the â70s,â the âViennaâ singer said while introducing the rocker. âI thought he was great then and I think heâs great now. Heâs one of my favorite musicians of all time. Please welcome Sting.â
The band immediately began playing âEvery Little Thing She Does Is Magic,â while the âRoxanneâ singer walked over to his tour mate and said, âStick around and sing with me, will you? You know this one.â
While Sting sang the first verse, Joel jumped in on the second and the two collaborated on the chorus of the 1981 hit. During the refrain, the two Grammy winners took turns howling different lines and then triumphantly sang together, appearing to feel the otherâs energy as they performed facing one another.
Later during the show when Joel took to the stage for his own headlining set, Sting returned to duet with him on âThe Big Man on Mulberry Street,â as seen in fan-captured clips . Fitting the classic crooner vibe of the 1986 song, he reappeared after doing an outfit change â trading his all-black rocker look for a silver suit and black fedora.

The âMessage in a Bottleâ singer largely took the lead on the song, belting the lyrics while Joel played the tune at the piano and harmonized with him on several verses. Sting appeared to be having a blast, as he started kicking his legs and dancing during the horns section.
According to fansâ posts on social media , Stingâs frequent collaborator Shaggy also stepped out to join him on âEnglishman in New York.â
Sting and Joelâs Saturday concert was one of several shows theyâll play together in 2024. As Joel wraps up his long-running residency at New York Cityâs Madison Square Garden this year, the Grammy winner will also set out on the road to play several shows across North America with both Sting and Stevie Nicks .

This spring, the New York legend will play a show with the Fleetwood Mac singer, 75, in Arlington, Texas and another MSG concert before linking back up with the âEvery Breath You Takeâ artist in San Diego in April. In addition to several solo shows and his final residency dates , which officially end in July, he and Nicks will play together again at Chicagoâs Soldier Field in June, and he'll play one more concert with Sting in St. Louis, Missouri in September.
While the âPiano Manâ singer is concluding his acclaimed residency after a decades-worth of shows, his run of new live dates comes after the release of his first single in years, â Turn the Lights Back On .â
