Krug Champagne House

Founded in 1843, Joseph Krug had the goal of blending wines of different years to produce a rich and consistent expression of pleasure. The House has a unique and singular approach, which has given it the reputation as the Haute Couture Champagne .

The prestige Krug Grande Cuvée  is the signature champagne of the house and aged for over 20 years. Over 120 wines are blended in this Cuvee taken from 150 reserve wines from the previous 10-15 vintages and 250 wines from a single year.

Did you know that each Krug bottle has a distinctive character using the six digit number that appears on the back label. An interactive Krug application, available on mobile and tablet, allows you to scan the Krug ID and access the unique history: harvest challenges of the year revealed by Cellar Master Eric Lebel, ratings from experts, food inspiration to pair with each cuvee, as well as storage recommendations.

Reservations can only be made for exisiting Krug clients upon written proof from your wine retailer and must be a minimum of 3 months in advance. If you are lucky enough to be offered a visit at Krug please note that it will last about 2hrs

▸ Personalized welcome at Maison Krug. 45mins ▸ Discovery of the House and Cellars 30mins ▸ Tasting "Journey into the Krug Universe" 45mins.

Your Day Tour

We will organize the day to compliment your visit to Krug should you be invited. If you like the fact the Krug vinifiies plot by plot and grape by grape or that they vinefy in the wine is oak barrels or the fact they do not make vintage champgnes, then you may like a production facility visit some medium size and artisanal growers who use the same methods to produce top quality champagnes, Billecart Salmon for example is a good example.

On the other hand you may like to try champagnes, which are produced quite differently and not vinified separately, vintage champagnes or vinified in steel vats to give a natural freshness and taste the difference. In addition to a visit where you can actually see , we will have time to stop for a triple tasting visit at some top brands like Gaston Chiquet or Vilmart & Cie.

Given your interest in the gastonomic champagne, it seem only in keeping with the days tastings of top quality to suggest a nice 1 star Michelin restaurant for lunch or a restaurant with a view over the vineyards. Everything is possible.

The Fabulous Krug Cellar Tour & Tasting in Reims, France

Maison Krug Reims

Krug Cellars is located in downtown Reims. If you weren’t looking for it you may stroll by it not noticing the subtle unmarked entrance.

Maison Krug Reims

Upon arriving to Maison Krug, we were welcomed with a glass of Krug Champagne as we sat and relaxed in this lovely lounge.

Maison Krug Reims

Cheers to the upcoming visit at Maison Krug and being able to sip on these beautiful wines for the next few hours! I feel like such a lucky girl being able to experience Maison Krug. Sadly this Maison is not open to the public so it’s quite a challenging visit to secure.

Maison Krug Reims

This is the Living Room and Dining Room at Maison Krug.

Maison Krug Reims

After being welcomed with a glass of wine and spending some time learning about the history of Krug we began our tour of the cellar.

Within these cellars resides the House’s vast library of reserve wines to which six generations have contributed. This collection now houses 150 wines, each expressing the personality of an individual plot.

Maison Krug Reims

The tank room where the Krug Champagnes are blended and stored before they’re bottled.

Maison Krug Reims

After our cellar tour, we proceeded to a tasting in this gorgeous tasting lounge. I felt as if I died and went to heaven. What a stunning experience!

Maison Krug Reims

The wall of 40 wines (shown on the right)

“Each year, Krug’s Cellar Master auditions 250 wines of the year and 150 reserve wines when creating a new Édition of Krug Grande Cuvée. While the wall of this tasting room visually depicts these 400 wines, each of which incarnates the essence of a single vineyard plot, audio speakers placed around the space play acoustic representations of 10 different regions of Champagne, to demonstrate the unique contribution of each to the final blend of Krug Grande Cuvée, the most generous expression of Champagne.”

Maison Krug Reims

Our tasting began with the Krug Grand Cuvee. I always enjoy tasting this stunning which has a deep golden color, fine bubbles with lovely fullness and elegant flavors.

Maison Krug Reims

Our tasting included the 2004 Krug vintage, the 2006 Krug Brut concluding with the Grand Cuvee 162. Each of these wines was magnificent with subtle unique tastes and flavor profiles.

It was interesting tasting the 2004 Krug vintage next to to the 2006 Krug Vintage as I found the 2004 lovely with creamy flavors and not too bright or acidity. I loved the nutty noises with caramel scents.

In comparison the 2006 Krug Brut also had the nutty profile yet it was a very hot year which made for a bigger more indulgent profile with beautiful vanilla scents on the nose.

Maison Krug Reims

Thanks to the Maison Krug team for hosting me for this informative and delicious tasting. What a spectacular once in a lifetime memory I will always treasure and appreciate.

The House of Krug in Reims, France, Was Paid for Entirely by Champagne

By Natasha Wolff

The courtyard of the Krug Maison with gardens to the left.

The House of Krug, LVMH’s highest-end champagne brand, has just debuted the restoration of its centuries-old family estate (now the brand headquarters, grand salon, cellars, and tasting room) in Reims, which is in Champagne country outside Paris, after a two-year renovation. For more than 150 years, the Krug Maison was home to founder Joseph Krug as well as many generations that followed. The property, in the family for six generations, hadn’t been touched in decades and had fallen into disrepair.

Though no longer a residence, the structure now features spacious outdoor gardens, a dining room overseen by Michelin-starred Chef Arnaud Lallement , a tasting room for visitors, a wine cellar 15-meters below the ground, and a grand salon. The intimate Le Salon des 400 Vins and library is lined with 150 reserve wines and 250 wines of the year (there are bottles dating back as far as 1880), which, when combined, create each blend of the label’s annual Krug Grande Cuvée release.

“The major challenge was to regroup the four separate houses, each of them with its own architectural identity, into one area organized around a central garden,” says French architect and interior designer Stephanie Ledoux of the firm AW2 , which oversaw the project. “We wanted to refurbish the place with a homogenous architecture without erasing traces of its history.”

The materials and finishes are simple and natural: local limestone and oak parquet floors, a warm beige color palette with pops of the brand’s signature dark cherry color (used strategically for sofas, doors and rugs). “Dark cherry is the historical color of the brand, which comes from Joseph Krug’s original notebook expressing his vision for the house,” says sixth-generation family member Olivier Krug, who grew up on the grounds. “It’s a tailor-made Pantone for us.”

A Private Tour of the House of Krug

In 1843, Joseph Krug established the House of Krug in Reims, France, at the center of the rich wine-growing region of Champagne. A German-born accountant who had moved to Paris when he was 34, Krug wanted to dispense with “vintages” and create a sparkling wine that could be produced with unwavering consistency every year. He was helped by an aptitude for blending reserve wines, a gift that allowed him to create one of the world’s most sippable Champagnes, Krug Grande Cuvée NV. He said that Champagne should be about perfection, and perfection is ultimately about pleasure. We know this because he wrote it in a journal, discovered in Krug’s archives only two years ago, a copy of which is now on display at the brand’s Maison in Reims.

Today, Krug, now a sixth-generation family business, buys about two-thirds of its grapes from 100 suppliers in the Champagne region, where there are some 280,000 pinot noir and chardonnay vineyards in use, according to Eric Lebel , the House of Krug’s cellar master. Of Lebel’s many jobs, one of the most important is quality control. He pays regular visits to more than 200 regional vineyards, especially in September, when the grapes are harvested. He selects vineyards by the characteristics of their grapes, not by the tonnage they can supply.

By autumn, Krug’s base wines are created. A diverse tasting committee convenes three times a week, registering around 5,000 records over the course of five months. Lebel then plods the notes, and by March will have a sketch of the year’s take. He fills in any flavor blanks (Grande Cuvée NV is essentially an oenological jigsaw puzzle), by blending the base wines from that year with some 150 wines from ten different vintages. The entire process from harvest to maturation can last anywhere from 7 to 17 years, whether it’s Grande Cuvée NV or a Krug vintage.

Krug also has its own 17th-century Chardonnay vineyard, Clos du Mesnil, in the village of Mesnil-sur-Oger, access to which is usually granted only to employees. The cloistered vineyard, which the Krug family maintains to be the purest expression of chardonnay, is locked behind high, protective walls that provide the grapes with a superior microclimate. It’s one of 12 walled vineyards in the Champagne region, with an annual output of between 2,000 and 10,000 bottles.

At the House’s Maison in Reims, employees take particular pride in their association with the brand. One told a story about an afternoon a few years ago, when some archived vintages were being moved and a bottle fell and cracked along the neck. Everyone rushed to sample the damaged bottle’s contents and guess the vintage. Because the Champagne was bright and crisp without a hint of having gone off, most guessed 1960 or 1970, but the bottled dated to 1915.

Owned by LVMH since 1999, Krug’s operations have never been open to the public. But this week, Lebel offered a rare look into the winemaker’s maison and private vineyard, revealing the alchemy required to make the perfect Krug Grande Cuvée NV.

Krug - lvmh.

The House was established in Reims in 1843, by Joseph Krug, a visionary non-conformist with an uncompromising philosophy. Having understood that the true essence of Champagne is pleasure itself, his dream was to craft the very best Champagne he could offer, every single year, regardless of annual climate variations. Paying close attention to the vineyard’s character, respecting the individuality of each plot and its wine, as well as building an extensive library of reserve wines from many different years, allowed Joseph Krug to fulfil his dream.

With a very original approach to Champagne making, he decided to go beyond the notion of vintage to create the most generous expression of Champagne, every year. Thus, he founded a House in which all Champagnes are of the same level of distinction. Six generations of the Krug family have perpetuated this dream, enriching the founder’s vision and savoir faire.

house of krug tour

Krug Grande Cuvée is born from the dream of one man, Joseph Krug, to craft the very best Champagne he could offer, every single year, regardless of annual variations in climate. Since 1843, the House of Krug has honoured this vision with each new Édition of Krug Grande Cuvée: the most generous expression of Champagne.

house of krug tour

“ From founder Joseph Krug, we inherit our unique approach to Champagne creation. Generations ago, he went beyond the traditional boundaries to craft the highest quality Champagne he could offer, every year, regardless of annual climate variations. In line with his vision, today we assess each wine from every plot as a single element, thereby guaranteeing the quality of those we select. This art of individuality allows me to re-create the most generous expression of Champagne each year. “

Since 2011, the House invites Champagne lovers to enter the Krug iD – six digits printed on the back label of every Krug bottle – in a dedicated section of the Krug website, using the Krug App, via Twitter or Google, to take their experience one step further. The Krug iD reveals a detailed story of the Krug bottle, the Cellar Master’s impressions of the year, Krug Music Pairing suggestions, food pairing inspiration, as well as recommendations for ideal storage and service to enhance every tasting of Krug Champagne.

Krug was born over 175 years ago from a vision of uncompromising quality and transmission. Respectful of craftsmanship, viticulture and terroir, the House of Krug vows to ensure its continuity for the centuries to come. Only with a total commitment to sustainability through the protection of, and respect for nature is this possible. The House’s commitment to sustainable viticulture has been a priority since the very beginning. In 2004, Krug received ISO certification in environmental practices, energy management and food safety management. Krug’s viticulture is certified sustainable and it was the first Maison of LVMH to be awarded the Positive Luxury title.

Music & Wine Pairing with House of Krug Champagne

The House of Krug goes a step further when pairing their iconic Champagne with music. Classically trained musicians from around the world collaborate with Krug Champagne to create unique scores that pair with the wines. When you visit the Krug Family House in Reims, the heart of Champagne, France, your tasting experience will also include music.

The Music of the House of Krug

In the wine world, we are often talking about pairings. We pair wine with food, with events, and with great company. Though it may be harder to describe, sometimes we even pair wine with things that are more metaphysical, ethereal, and emotional. Have you ever paired wine with music?

Krug Music Pairing & Experience Explained | Winetraveler.com

Music & Wine Pairing with House of Krug Champagne

The House of Krug goes a step further when pairing their iconic bubbly with music, and in fact, each vintage of their Champagne is likened to a different musical instrument that is perfectly combined with others to complete a magnificent orchestra with each new Édition of Krug Grande Cuvée released. Meaning, the vibrant, precise style of this wine is not just produced year-after-year without great thought and attention, but with particular consideration of how each “player” will harmonize perfectly with others. Think of it in terms of each vintage year representing a core instrument, which may be strong enough on its own, depending on the conditions of that growing season, or perhaps it is better matched with the instruments of years past for a complete symphony of taste.

Krug Echoes

The Krug House is dedicated to the scientific musical approach, with elements of emotion in the final product. There is truly a methodical connection between music and taste that has been perfected here, according to Krug. Each individual plot is considered to be a fine musician, contributing its own unique character and strengths to the final blend, which reveals itself in the extraordinary fresh intensity of the brand.

Over the years, the House has partnered with musicians to also bring in a unique pairing element once the Grande Cuvée symphony is assembled. Through their Krug Echoes program, classically trained musicians from around the world collaborate with the brand and create unique scores for each vintage and Édition of Krug Grande Cuvée. These professional musicians taste the Champagne, and then through feeling and their professional sense of music create a song that best represents the emotion evoked by a specific blend. It’s the deepest connection between sound and taste.

Krug lovers from around the world can enjoy the individual sounds of each bottle by logging into the Krug application on their smartphones and entering the Krug ID number, which is a six-digit number located on the back of the bottle. Once in the app, there are resources to tell you everything about that specific year or blend, as well as the musical pairings for that bottle. Sit back and enjoy the Champagne and the accompanying sensory experience, combining two of the world’s most enjoyable pleasures; the beautiful sounds of music and drinking Champagne .

The Krug Experience: Tasting Review and Photos

Throughout the year, we organise an array of champagne tastings based around different themes – from our comprehensive range tastings to more formal masterclasses – which typically encompass comparisons of anything from vintages, brands, size formats and styles. Of the different themes, our Krug Experiences have consistently proven one of our most popular and have consequently become a fixed feature in our annual tasting calendar.

Our most recent celebration of this most famously prestige effervescence was hosted by Essi Avellan MW at 67 Pall Mall last month. Guests were served five Krug Grande Cuv̩es, 166th to 161st Editions (base vintages 2010 to 2005); and seven Krug Vintages, 2006 to 1995. In addition, four of these champagnes were served from magnum, making it a simply unmissable evening РKrug fanatic or not.

Our thanks to Jack, Krug’s London-based Brand Manager for providing our fantastic welcome drink – the latest release of their non-vintage,  Krug Grande Cuvée 167th Edition NV .

“At Krug, we’re not about consistency but generosity. We don’t work to a rulebook or a formula and want to celebrate the differences from year to year†– Olivier K rug

Krug Grande Cuvée Grande Cuvée is not your average non-vintage. Priced at a similar level to the prestige cuvées of many other major champagne houses, it is a prestige cuvée in its own right. Like other non-vintages, Grande Cuvée consists of wine from several years: a base vintage (the youngest and majority part in the blend) and reserve wines from older vintages. Amongst the many things that make Grande Cuvée unique is that the proportion of reserve wines is unusually high (typically 30-50%) and the reserve wines are unusually old (the youngest Edition in this tasting, 166 (the 2010 base), features reserve wine from 1998).

Given the typically high percentage of reserve wines from such old vintages, Krug manage to produce a very consistent style and quality with Grande Cuvée each year. However, with 50-70% of the blend coming from one base vintage, each Edition inevitably displays subtle differences that showcase the characteristics of that year.

In late 2016, Krug began numbering each Grande Cuvée blend to promote the individuality of each creation and allow the ageing capacity and potential complexity of Grande Cuvée to be understood. Now that Grande Cuvée displays its Edition on the label, the famous non-vintage can be fully appreciated as a series of difference releases – which can now be easily compared, explored and endlessly discussed!

Krug Vintage The next step-up in quality level is vintage champagne, Again, where at most houses the vintage category champagnes situate themselves above the brut non-vintage, but below the top prestige cuvée range, at Krug the distinction is obsolete. Their vintage champagnes reveal the unique characteristics of each year; expert blends of expressive wines enhanced by more than ten years of maturity in the cellars, named to reflect their individual identities: Krug 2000 ‘Stormy Indulgence’; Krug 2002  ‘Ode to Nature’;  Krug 2003  ‘Vivacious Radiance’;  Krug 2004  ‘Luminous Freshness’; and Krug 2006  ‘Capricious Indulgence’.

The potential for a Krug vintage champagne is identified during the blending of Krug Grande Cuvée. Once the non-vintage blend has been secured and all of the reserves earmarked, the wines displaying the most pronounced character of the vintage are blended to create the vintage champagne. This tasting will highlight six vintages of Krug, including 2000 in both bottle and magnum; 2002 , one of the greatest ever; and a magnum of  1995 , newly “late released” and extraordinarily scarce.

The champagnes were tasted blind and are listed below in the order tasted on the evening. Tasting notes and scores are Nick’s from The Finest Bubble. Guests live scored each champagne using our smartphone app and the group average scores are presented in the table of ranking below our tasting notes.

Conclusion While each of the champagnes showed amazingly well (18.2/20 average score!), the magnum effect was once again the star of the show. Each of the larger formats had a fuller texture and deeper complexity, as showcased by the three vintage magnums taking the podium spots as the highest rated tipples of the evening. The conclusion: if you want to experience the best of Krug, you need to be drinking it from a magnum!

The Best Time to Visit the ‘Little House on the Prairie’ Filming Location

T he story of Little House on the Prairie may take place in the Midwest United States, but the show that aired from 1974 to 1983 on NBC was filmed in Simi Valley, California . If you ever want to visit the town that the beloved show was filmed in, here’s the best time to go.

‘Little House on the Prairie’ was filmed at the Big Sky Movie Ranch in Simi Valley, California

Though Little House on the Prairie was set in Minnesota, the show was filmed in a town called Simi Valley in California. Specifically, the Little House cast and crew filmed at Big Sky Movie Ranch.

According to the website , “Big Sky Movie Ranch is a 7,000 plus acre Ranch all within the 30 mile zone. This Southern California preeminent Movie Ranch provides a variety of backgrounds and locations easily accessible for filming. These locations include old ranch house sets, giant oak trees, ponds, grass meadows, valleys, rocky outcroppings, dirt trails, and incredible views overlooking mountains, grassy hills, and more.”

Big Sky Movie Ranch has been the filming location for several shows and films through the years, including: Gunsmoke, Highway to Heaven, Men in Black, Transformers, Wild Bill, Twin Peaks, Jericho , and Coming to America.

When to visit Simi Valley

If you’d like to visit Simi Valley, the town where Little House on the Prairie was filmed, there really isn’t a bad time to go. Simi Valley is a pretty temperate place. The summers can get hot into the 80s and the winters dip into the high 40s in the evenings and reach mid-60s during the day, according to weather.com . But the best times to go are definitely the spring and fall.

In the spring (March through May), Simi Valley boasts beautiful wildflower displays all throughout the area’s parks and nature reserves. It’s the perfect time for such outdoor activities as biking and hiking. During the day, the temperature is typically in the high 60s and low 70s. And the evenings cool off to high 40s and low 50s.

The fall (Sept. through Nov.) is another great time to visit Simi Valley. With slightly cooler temperatures, there aren’t quite as many tourists but the weather is still nice enough to enjoy the beautiful surroundings. The leaves are just beginning to change colors and there’s a crispness in the air that’s refreshing but not cold.  Temperatures typically range from high 70s during the day to mid-50s at night.

The ‘Little House on the Prairie’ set was blown up and burned down

Why Melissa Gilbert Said Meeting Her ‘Scary-Looking’ Neighbor Was Like Something out of a ‘Little House on the Prairie’ Episode

In Laura Ingalls actor Melissa Gilbert’s memoir, Prairie Tale , she writes about how Michael Landon blew up most of the Little House set after learning the show had been canceled. He wrote a plot point in the final Little House movie The Last Farewell that involved blowing up the town. He didn’t want the network to be able to reuse any of the show’s set. All that remained by the end of filming was the church.

Eventually, a replica of the homestead was built. But in 2003, it was wiped out in a fire at the Big Sky Movie Ranch.

“It is a total, devastating loss,” Simi Valley Chamber of Commerce Chief Executive Officer Leigh Nixon said, according to the Ventura County Star . “That is one of the things Simi was known for.”

After the 2003 fire, yet another replica was set to be built. But that was scorched in a 2019 brush fire that started with a lightning strike. So, today, there’s pretty much nothing left of the Little House on the Prairie set. Just the rolling hills that housed the cast and crew for 10 years.

  • Amy Roloff and her husband Chris Marek tour a potential dream retirement house on Tuesday’s episode of Little People, Big World
  • Chris also sees the massive abode as a business opportunity to host events, while Amy admits that the property is outside of their budget
  • The pair are blown away by the space but agree that it would require a lot of maintenance

Amy Roloff and her husband Chris Marek are thinking big when it comes to their retirement!

On Tuesday’s new episode of Little People, Big World , the TLC stars brought viewers along with them as they tour a massive 10,000 sq. ft. house in Oregon. The scene begins with Roloff and Marek discussing the pros and cons of the property as they drive over.

“I’m worried that this house is a little outside our budget, but it’s good to look at and see,” Roloff says.

“I think the first step is to see if we like it and if we do, work out how we pay for it,“ Marek counters, adding that seeing Amy's ex Matt Roloff ."get so far along on his dream house reminds us that we’re not in our dream house yet. So we’re actively watching and it would be nice to find that home before we retire.”

Amy then admits that the home they’re about to look at, which boasts a six-car garage, is bigger than they need but it’s more up their alley.

“We’re used to having a little more space,” she says. “An acre would be nice. I would eventually like a home with a master on the main. We’d love a three-car garage.”

Upon entering the six-acre property, Amy immediately notes the long, beautifully landscaped driveway, but worries about the maintenance it may require.

As they pull up to the home, they are both blown away by the spacious entryway and stunning rural view from the back windows.

“I think it looks better than the pictures,” Marek says.

While Amy is looking for a permanent home to retire in, her husband sees the sprawling abode as a business opportunity.

“It seems like this would be a good venue for weddings,” he says. “Not a lot of people around, you know, beautiful farmland.”

Amy understands where her husband is coming from but admits that she doesn’t want to be working “until I’m 85” just to afford it.

In a confessional-style clip, Amy reveals her excitement about sharing this new experience with her husband.

“I think Chris and I, we’re still learning about each other,” she explains. “This will be the first time that we’re making some really major decisions together. I think this is kind of fun and exciting to see how we work together.”

After the pair tour the kitchen, bathroom, primary bedroom and movie room, she sighs and says: “This is high maintenance, man.”

Also during the scene, she compares the home to her ex-husband Matt's property, Roloff Farms , where she and Marek tied the knot in 2021.

“10,000 square feet is big. I think the ‘Big House’ at the farm is a little over 5,000 square feet. And I thought the farmhouse was plenty of space as well,” she says.

Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from juicy celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

Amy previously owned a portion of the farm and lived there until she and Matt divorced in 2016 . The exes share four children together — twins Zach and Jeremy , 33, a daughter named Molly, 30, and another son named Jacob , 27.

While both have moved on with new partners , Matt revealed that he was planning to leave the farm to his ex-wife during the season 16 premiere of Little People, Big World after he had a falling out with son Zach.

Little People, Big World airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET on TLC.

How pro golfers are giving back at an Alexandria soup kitchen

Pro golfers with the 21st annual Coca-Cola Dr. Pepper Open All Pro Tour Charlie Flynn (left) of Alexandria, Philip Barbaree of Shreveport and Andrew Beckler of Topeka, Kan., peel potatoes at Manna House. The open is a signature fundraiser for Manna House and golfers are invited to volunteer and see how they are making a difference in the community.

Pro golfers Andrew Beckler, Philip Barbaree and Charlie Flynn thought they were volunteering at Manna House to make a difference in other people’s lives, but found that serving also made a difference in theirs.

They are among the 132 pro golfers here in town for the 21 st annual Coca-Cola Dr. Pepper Open All Pro Tour at Links on the Bayou golf course. The tour a signature fundraising event for Manna House.

The tournament purse is expected to be $130,000 with the champion taking home a minimum of $20,000, states an APT press release.

Beckler and Barbaree peeled potatoes while Flynn sliced them into pieces for meals that will be prepared at that non-profit that provides free meals to those in need.

“It's a good way to get back to Alexandria because they’re so welcoming to us for this tournament this week. Golf can be kind of a selfish game, so it's a great way to give back and be selfless,” said Beckler, 26, of Topeka, Kan.

Jessica Viator, executive director, says they invite the golfers to help out so they can see what they are a part of and the difference they are making in the community.

“A lot of them come here and they're here to help, but they leave here with their hearts full and very blessed,” she said.

Being able to provide people with nutritional meals is very important, said Viator.

“Nutrition affects the way that we feel about ourselves. It affects how children perform in school,” she said.

It also affects how people perform on the job. Not everyone that eats there is homeless. Viator said they serve a lot of the working poor.

“I think it’s cool, especially to give back to the whole community,” said Flynn, 24, of Alexandria. “Like Miss Jessica said, it's bigger than golf. This is the biggest fundraiser all year. And you know, it's cool to see a group of people coming together to help people in need.”

“It's a good way to to give back to the community and to really thank the Manna House for help sponsoring us as well. To be able to serve and to help others, It's very rewarding thing,” said Barbaree, 25, of Shreveport.

The week included the Rogenmoser Family Shoot-Out and the Walker GMC ProAM.

The first round of the Coca-Cola Dr. Pepper Open Championship Round 1 began Wednesday. Round 2 is set for 7:3- a.m. Thursday and Round 3 for 8 a.m. Friday. The final championship round will start at 8 a.m. Saturday. Meals were also catered by Walk-On’s with beer donated by Southwest Beverages non-alcoholic drinks donated by Coca-Cola. Councilman-at-Large, Jim Villard volunteered to make jambalaya for the golfers as well.

Viator said the tournament has a $500,000 economic impact for Alexandria. Golfers, their families, the KG Sports Team that’s part of the APT Tour, the volunteers and others stay in the local hotels, eat at local restaurants and shop.

“I always say that we feel we provide a very vital service by keeping people fed because it's been proven time and time again when they're hungry, they do some very desperate things,” said Viator. “So we feel like we connected that. And by bringing the Tour here financially we help our great city of Alexandria. It really warms my heart that it's a win-win situation for all of us.”

Sponsors for the event include Walker GMC, the All Pro Tour, GAEDA, the City of Alexandria, Cleco, Alexandria/Pineville Area Convention & Visitors Bureau, Super One, Walter and Gayle Aertker, RoyOMartin and Robby and Barbara Rogenmoser.

Josh Brolin Never Thought He’d End Up in Malibu

How the “Dune” actor made a home in a place he once resisted.

A living room space with a rattan lantern hanging from the slanted ceiling. One wall is crowded with figurative art; another has a built-in bookcase and cabinet made from a light wood. Two chairs made from branches flank a circular table with a pedestal resembling a stack of stones. A large wooden table is stacked with books and a fruit bowl.

By Nick Haramis

IN HIS EARLY 20s, long before he became a leading man, Josh Brolin took a writing class taught by the American Beat poet Allen Ginsberg. One of the assignments was to create an evocative phrase by combining two words. A fellow student came up with “Tylenol Christ”; Brolin, an enthusiastic storyteller, had trouble being that succinct. The experience has been on the actor’s mind recently as he finishes his forthcoming memoir, a mix of stories, anecdotes and poems scheduled to come out this fall. In a recently completed essay, he describes chasing a flock of sheep with two of his children when they were young on Scotland’s remote Isle of Skye. (His son, Trevor, and eldest daughter, Eden, both from his first marriage to the actress Alice Adair, are now 36 and 31.) To their horror, one of the fleeing animals broke its back. “It’s about what had to transpire for the next hour,” says Brolin, 56, from his writing hut in Malibu, Calif., a gift from his wife of nearly eight years, the photographer Kathryn Boyd Brolin, 37, who modeled it after ones used by the Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw and the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas. “It’s the clearest, most emotional thing I’ve written.”

House Tour | Josh Brolin

The actor gives a tour of his guesthouse and airstream trailer in malibu, calif..

Hey, this is Josh Brolin. Welcome to my home in Malibu. It’s a beautiful day today. Come on in, let me show you around. [MUSIC PLAYING] This is the big room. I like the big room. It holds most of the art that I have. I grew up on a ranch in Paso Robles, California. I’ve always liked the ranch feel, so I think there’s a lot of California influences. I love playing pool. I remember playing in Barney’s Beanery once, and Sean Penn was behind me, and “The Color of Money” had just come out, and I had a big pompadour at the time, and Sean Penn says, “Look, another Tom Cruise wannabe.” [BILLIARD BALL SMACKS] [LAUGHS] To be in a kitchen like this, the only downfall is that I don’t want to cook in it because it’s so nice, but we do. [MUSIC PLAYING] We’re in one of two offices. There’s a lot of books. I’ll do a lot of reading in here. This is Cormac McCarthy’s book, “No Country for Old Men,” which is a film that I did with the Coens. And when Cormac came to the set, he used my fake blood. That’s his fingerprints and his signature. [MUSIC PLAYING] This is my most prized wall of art, for sure. [FOOTSTEPS CRUSHING GRAVEL] Here’s the writer’s room. It’s inspired by Dylan Thomas’s shed. The most important aspect to me is this. [CLICK] It’s the single light. [CLICK] I missed that when I was a kid. The story of this — it was the trailer of one of the characters of a movie I did called “Hail, Caesar!” [MUSIC PLAYING] When people come over, this is where we meet, this is where we talk about business. Ahh, yeah, we could take this on the road if we wanted to. [MUSIC PLAYING]

Brolin looks and presents like a modern-day cowboy. He was raised 200 miles up the Pacific Coast on a horse ranch in Paso Robles and inherited that property (which he sold in 2004 and bought back in 2010) from his mother, the wildlife conservationist Jane Cameron Agee, who died in a car accident the day after his 27th birthday. Although his father, the actor James Brolin, relocated to Malibu, where he now lives with his wife, Barbra Streisand, Brolin had always rejected the seaside community as a place for, as he puts it, celebrities “trying not to be seen as they’re trying to be seen.” He prefers the lawless energy of nearby Venice, in Los Angeles, where he’s been renting a beachfront apartment for almost 15 years. But in 2011, Brolin, who frequently looks at online real estate listings in bed, came across a 2,400-square-foot bungalow on one and a half acres in a part of Malibu once known as Poor Point. With money he made from “Men in Black 3” (2012), he bought the charmingly rundown four-bedroom house, which spoke, he says, to his “misfit, outcast mentality,” from the musician Jakob Dylan. Brolin, who also has a home in Atlanta, rented it out for years.

In 2018, he and Kathryn, who once worked as his assistant, decided to fix up the place and live there themselves. When the minimalist style of the first designer they hired didn’t align with Brolin’s vision — “Neutral makes no sense to me at all,” he says — Kathryn suggested they reach out to Louisa Pierce and Emily Ward, known professionally as Pierce & Ward. (Coincidentally, it was Ward’s partner, the actor Giovanni Ribisi, who had nearly outbid Brolin to buy the house.) The duo understood Brolin’s taste for what he calls “nutty kaleidoscope” and “Old World European busyness”: The walls of the residence are painted or papered in powdery colors, floral motifs and stripes; a playroom for the couple’s two daughters — Westlyn, 5, and Chapel, 3 — has been made to resemble the berth of a ship; the living and dining rooms are decorated with worn leather armchairs, creaky wooden tables and sun-faded kilim rugs. Except for the fake Academy Award in a closet that they use as a wet bar — and Brolin’s casual mentions of “Clooney’s place in the South of France” and “Momoa’s hundred motorcycles” — there’s barely any suggestion of Hollywood. “I was so in their face in the beginning [of the renovation],” he says about Pierce and Ward. “I’d send them hundreds of photographs. And then I thought, ‘The more I try to affect this whole thing, the worse it’s going to get.’ So I backed off.”

THE MAIN HOUSE contains a considerable amount of art — including several of Brolin’s 13 portraits in oil by the contemporary Genoese painter Vera Girivi; another one by the 20th-century American artist Moses Soyer (a gift from Brolin’s stepmother); and a 2009 watercolor of the writer Charles Bukowski, about whom Brolin is developing a script by the American painter and street artist David Choe — but the newly finished one-bedroom guesthouse, which overlooks the pool and took more than six years to complete, was made for displaying it. In addition to wanting a place to entertain friends, the couple needed the extra 2,000 square feet to accommodate their growing collection of works by emerging and established painters such as Jonathan Gardner, Shara Hughes and Danielle Mckinney .

“If you only know me cosmetically, it makes no sense that I’d be a collector of art,” says Brolin, who also has a number of vintage motorcycles. “But what you see is usually not what you get.” Not that he minds; the actor, who is sober, has stopped trying to control how people perceive him. “There’s nothing better than bringing my crew here and having a gnarly-ass ex-Hells Angel going, ‘Well, that’s really interesting,’” he says. As we talk, the afternoon sun is casting shadows across the nearly 17-foot-high mustard walls and a pair of lounge chairs from a 1980s steamboat. In this light, the space feels like a William Eggleston photograph come to life.

Two additional structures complete the fantasy: an Airstream trailer from the set of the Coen brothers’ 2016 movie, “ Hail, Caesar! ,” where Brolin, who returns to screens this month in “Dune: Part Two,” takes most of his meetings; and a stand-alone office with an antique walnut desk, an Art Deco lamp by the modernist Irish architect and designer Eileen Gray and a typewriter — an Olivetti Lettera 32 — that once belonged to the novelist Cormac McCarthy. After years of false starts and a second career as a stock trader, Brolin finally became a movie star with his role as an unsuspecting hunter in the Coen brothers’ film adaptation of McCarthy’s 2005 novel, “No Country for Old Men”; he was with the author this past June the night before he died.

While discussing his late friend, Brolin pauses to admire a pin board of his most cherished works of art: a glitter-covered shooting star and a paper cutout in the shape of a tiny hand by Chapel and Westlyn. “I can get all weird and emotional thinking about them,” he says. “I went 22 years in a career where I wasn’t valued. I was the guy who was supposed to hit but never did. And then a part came along that was revelatory. The point is that none of this was supposed to happen. And that’s the truest way I can say it.”

Krug Cellar Master

INDIVIDUALITY, AT THE HEART OF KRUG'S SAVOIR-FAIRE

It was founder Joseph Krug’s unfaltering belief that only by paying the utmost attention to every single element could he offer the fullest expression of Champagne with the highest possible quality every year, regardless of variations in climate.

In order to transcend the notion of vintage in creating a Champagne with exceptional quality, Joseph Krug began building a collection of reserve wines to which six generations have contributed. This library now houses 150 wines, each expressing the personality of an individual plot.

A cornerstone of Krug’s craftsmanship is the concept of individuality, or the art of turning the harvest from every plot into a separate wine and then following its individual character before any blending decision is made.

This allows Krug’s Cellar Master to identify and discern wines from single plots that can enrich that year’s creations, others to be kept as reserve wines for later use or wines to reject, which do not express the desired profile.

Text 1- The House of Krug’s unique craftsmanship is based on our understanding every plot through its individual wine. After several tastings by the tasting committee, a thorough assessment of each plot’s wine is achieved. In order to reveal the individual essence of every Krug Champagne, the most expressive wines are selected to play in each composition accordingly. ‍ No strong filtering or cold treatment is applied to any of our wines before bottling, thereby keeping a non-interventionist approach to the creation of every Krug Champagne, from vineyards to glass. ‍ As a result of this choice, while enjoying Krug, you may occasionally notice at the bottom of the last glass a few wine diamonds – harmless tartrate crystals which can form naturally while bottles are resting or being chilled. ‍ These are also known as quality crystals and we at the House of Krug felt it was important to share with you this further evidence of our commitment to preserving the most natural approach to the creation of all Krug Champagnes.

A MUSICAL APPROACH TO CHAMPAGNE CREATION

Creating a new Édition each year takes a very musical approach at the House of Krug. Looking back to the origins of the House, one can imagine Joseph Krug in his cellar working like a Music composer: tasting a vast array of unique wines, painstakingly taking notes and organising flavours and aromas

Today, Julie Cavil, Krug Cellar Master works in much the same way, drawing on around 400 wines, the majority of which capture the essence of a single plot. The House of Krug places great importance on respecting the individual character of every element contributing to the creation of each Édition.

In a series of auditions conducted throughout the year, Julie and the winemaking team, a group of 5 to 6 members, taste around 250 wines of the year 2 to 3 times and 150 reserve wines from 14 different years once in early spring.

Julie records over 4000 tasting notes which he consults before any blending decision is made: the distinct melody of each wine, its particular character, level of freshness, intensity, roundness and depth – all are crucial to the creation of the whole. In Krug Grande Cuvée, the entire orchestra plays in joyous harmony the music of Champagne.

Since 1843, Krug’s raison d’être is to perpetuate the dream of its founder by re-creating the most generous expression of Champagne, every year, regardless of annual climate variations. Joseph Krug passed on his legacy by committing his vision to the pages of his dark cherry personal notebook. Since then, six generations have kept it alive, respecting the transmission and many years required to craft Krug Champagnes.

Former Krug Cellar Master & Deputy Director of the House

Since 2011, the House has invited Champagne lovers to enter the Krug iD – six digits printed on the back label of every bottle – in a dedicated section of the Krug website or using the Krug App and, since 2016, via Messenger, to take their experience of Krug Champagnes one step further. The Krug iD reveals the Cellar Master’s impressions of the year, a detailed story of the bottle, food pairing suggestions, recommendations for ideal storage and service, as well as Krug Music Pairing suggestions to enhance every Krug Champagne tasting.

When Joseph Krug established the Champagne House bearing his name in 1843, driven by his understanding that the true essence of Champagne is pleasure itself, his dream was to offer the very best Champagne every year, regardless of annual climate variations.

THE FAMILY HOUSE

Since 1843, six generations of the Krug family have perpetuated this dream, enriching the Joseph Krug’s vision and savoir faire. Today, the Family House welcomes Krug Lovers from around the world to take a sensorial journey around Krug Champagne.
