Historic Mexico City ‘Runseeing’ Tour: Zócalo & Av. Reforma
Categories:
**Note: It’s best to time this run on a Sunday morning when Reforma Avenue is closed to traffic until mid-day.
What better way to experience the landmarks of Mexico City than on a run? This route takes you past impressive and unique architecture and exposes some amazing culture and history. NOTE: This is an easy-to follow-route — most of it is on Av. Reforma. The description below is more details on the sites!!
Begin your run in Zócalo , the heart of Mexico City. This main square houses the Cathedral Metropolitana, (the oldest and largest cathedral in Latin America), the Palacio National, and the Plaza de la Constitución. Go into the Plaza de la Constitucion, and explore the Zocalo Market marked by its many colorful umbrellas.
Take a LEFT on Calle de Tacuba (going away from the square) to Alameda Central Park . Enjoy the shade of the poplar trees, Alamo in Spanish, that the park was named after. At the end of the park, you will reach Av. Paseo de la Reforma , an ancient road modeled after the Champs-Elysees in Paris. There are wide sidewalks on this main road lined with stores, offices, and important sites. Pass El Ángel de la Independenci a, (a monument to Christopher Columbus), and the Huntress Diana Fountain (Fuente de la Diana Cazadora). Turn around here and retrace your steps.
Exit Reforma Avenue on Calle Morelos and continue until you reach Lázaro Cárdenas near the Metro San Juan de Letrán Station. At this corner is the Mercado de Artesanias San Juan , an artisans market. LEFT, past the Torre Latinoamericana — a member of the World federation of Great Towers. Continue on this road until you see the main opera house of Mexico City, the Palacio De Bellas Artes . From here, continue down Avenue Cinco de Mayo to return to the starting point.
Add-Ons : Combine with Bosque de Chapultepec — the largest city park in the western hemisphere. It’s at the southwest end of Av. Reforma
- 6.2 mile loop
- Zócalo Metro Station
- Metro: Zócalo

The Most Scenic Running Routes In Mexico City
Northern England Writer
While the 7,400ft above sea level altitude of Mexico City can prove challenging for even the most well prepared runner, the scenic routes on offer in and around the Mexican capital are more than worth the added physical exertion. We recommend running either early in the morning or late at night to avoid the worst of the pollution, but what better way to start off your ‘new year, new you’ fitness regime than by running around North America’s megalopolis?

Parque Alameda
Situated smack bang in the middle of Mexico City, Parque Alameda is a beautiful urban park with a long and strange history. Nowadays, however, the criss-crossing paths make it the ideal spot for a light jog if you’d prefer to stay in the centre of the capital and soak up all the atmosphere that it has to offer. Typically busier on the weekends, with families and travellers making the most of their surroundings, if you want to run you should probably go midweek.
The Coyoacán area of Mexico City has long been a firm favourite of runners from across the world due to its beautiful streets and open parks that are perfectly picturesque and ideal for a casual jog. While you can easily enjoy the 1.4 mile loop that takes you through the beautiful Viveros Coyoacán, we recommend you venture out into the streets to really get a feel for this bohemian region. Consider making the Jardín Centenario part of your route also.

Bosque de Aragón
A little further afield, in the area around the Mexico City airport, you can find the tranquil Bosque de Aragón. This park has two well-marked running routes which will either take you on a longer, more rough and tumble dirt path that skirts round the park’s perimeter, or a paved, shorter route which has a marvellous fountain at the centre. Either way, access to this scenic running location couldn’t be easier – you can either drive or just take the metro and get off at the Bosque de Aragón station.
Historic Downtown
If you prefer a more urban location for your running routes than the perfect place in Mexico City is undoubtedly the historic downtown. The well laid out grid format means formulating and sticking to a route is mighty simple and you’re unlikely to get lost. Also, you can take in the sights and sounds of the capital, such as the Bellas Artes building and the Palacio Nacional. It goes without saying that this route should only really be tackled in the early morning when there are fewer people on the streets.
If the idea of getting up early for a run through Mexico City’s historic centre doesn’t appeal though, you can always head to the San Ángel neighbourhood , further south in the city. Hop on the metro and start your run from the Miguel Ángel metro station itself, heading north as you leave before turning onto Arenal in the direction of Jardín de la Bombilla. We recommend making your way to the Plaza San Ángel if possible, and passing by the beautiful monastery.
Bosque de Tlalpan
A renowned running haven within the Mexico City metropolitan area, the Bosque de Tlalpan has several different running tracks to choose from. In fact, out of the five total, you’re sure to find one to suit you, although many recommend Track 4. A 4km route, it will lead you past some of the best sights and sounds of the park, including the zoo. An excellent running spot, it does unfortunately close at 5pm daily.
For a running route with a view and a history, you should head to Canal Cuemanco. This picturesque location has a paved track that follows the path of the canal which was the venue for Mexico City’s 1968 Olympics rowing event. What’s more, the views over Mexico’s twin volcanoes Popo and Itza, as well as the legendary Xochimilco trajineras and canals make this an unmissable 5km loop route in Mexico City.
Nevado de Toluca
If you want a truly jaw dropping view over the surrounding city and valleys as you run, you must head to the spectacular Nevado de Toluca. While you’re adding altitude (and therefore difficulty) to your workout, the reasonably flat surface offered on Mexico’s 4th highest peak makes it more than worth the trip and the effort. Even though this is technically situated in Mexico State, the magnificence of the location and easy access gains it a spot on our guide.
Los Dinamos
One of Mexico City’s most popular weekend getaways is Los Dinamos . This ecological park, to the southeast of the city, is vast – in fact, it reaches right up to Mexico State at some points. If you like trail running, rather than pounding the pavements, Los Dinamos is ideal. Its wide-open expanse of forest offers plenty of opportunity to formulate your own routes and make the most of the rough dirt trails already in place.
Bosque de Chapultepec
Finally, the sprawling Bosque de Chapultepec holds much running route potential smack bang in the centre of Mexico City. As the largest park in the Western Hemisphere, it has a ton of open space, some well-kept pathways and perhaps the most intellectually stimulating surrounding sights of all the running spots discussed thus far. If you get tired, you can stop off at the National Anthropology Museum and soak up some culture, or even sprint up the hill to Chapultepec Castle. The running world truly is your oyster here.

MEXICO CITY RUNNING RACES IN 2024
Mexico City sits at an altitude of 2,250 meters above sea level. At this altitude, you might think that it will need some extra effort to run. And it’s true to some extent. But despite the altitude, which most people can handle reasonably well, you have a vibrant and exciting city to run in.
Mexico City regularly hosts several running races and activities throughout the year, like Go! Running Mexico City tours . Running with us allows you to catch sunrises in the main square in Downtown, discover 19th-century Art Deco and Art Nouveau style architecture and relax in big city parks. You can even smell just made tortillas and tamales in your morning run.
Besides, Mexico City has pleasant weather, with temperatures between 13 and 26 degrees Celcius. Even on rainy days, you’ll be in comfort.
The COVID-19 pandemic restricted many races and sports events. But with the vaccines, Mexico City is taking all the precautions for you to enjoy running again.
Here’s a list of some of the 2024 running races in Mexico City:
Pescado de Moctezuma
Date: TBC 2024
Pescado de Moctezuma is a relay race from the Tecolutla beach to the pyramids of Teotihuacàn. It’s the perfect opportunity for you and your friends to run a race rooted deep in history. The race dates 500 years and is connected to one of the most ancient routes of Aztec times.
Legend says that the Aztec emperor Moctezuma employed expert runners called painanis. They ran in relay to bring him fresh fish from the coast, which was 350 kilometres away. The tradition continues to date in the form of Pescado de Moctezuma, which translates to Montezuma’s fish.
Mexico City Marathon
Date: 25 August 2024
Mexico City Marathon is one of the most important running races of Mexico. Applications are not open yet, but if COVID-19 allows, the marathon is scheduled to occur on November 27. It starts from the Estadio Olimpico Universitario and ends at Zócalo Capitalino, one of the world’s largest and most magnificent city squares. On its course, the participants pass through iconic landmarks like Soumaya Museum, the Angel of Independence, and Palacio de Bellas Artes.
Mexico City Half Marathon
Date: 14 July 2024
If you want to race in Mexico City, but don’t want something as long as the full marathon, then the half marathon is for you. It is the shorter version of the full marathon and will take place two days prior. The race starts from Torre Caballito, winds through the 1700-acre Bosque de Chapultepec city park, and finishes at the Angel of Independence monument.
Travesía en las Sierras (Crossing the Sierras)
Date: 18 -19 May 2024
Travesía en las Sierras is for you if you are really, really into extreme races. “Solo Para Salvajes” is an organisation that literally means just for savages in Spanish. It is celebrating the tenth anniversary of its most challenging race, Travesía en las Sierras.
You can choose from 50 km, 100 km, 50 or 100 miles. The ultramarathon race takes place in the state of Mexico, approximately two hours from the capital. The best trail runners of Mexico attend this race, so it’s an excellent opportunity to run with the best of the best.

Sundays are great for a run or bike ride down Paseo de la Reforma. (Photo: Getty)
Lace Up and Hit the Best Places to Go Running in Mexico City
Mexico City truly has plenty to offer to every type of traveler, even an avid runner. The city gets a bad rap for its pollution, but Mexico’s capital city is full of parks and plazas that are perfect for a jog.
It’s important for runners to remember that Mexico City is 2,250 meters above sea level and the altitude may affect your stamina. Pollution has been reduced in recent years, but smog is still an element that runners should keep in mind. As long as you consider these two factors, there’s no reason you can’t enjoy one of many scenic runs through Mexico City.
Here are a few ideas of where to run beyond the hotel gym during your trip to Mexico City :
Bosque de Chapultepec
One of the largest public parks in Latin America at more than 1,600 acres, Chapultepec Park sets a pristine backdrop for a morning run. A 5-kilometer-loop known as El Sope is a favorite of the city’s runners. But there are many different corners of the park to explore. Loop around one of the park’s lakes or end your run at the 18th-century castle, one of the park’s main attractions.
Paseo de la Reforma
The iconic Angel of Independence is on most tourist’s sightseeing lists and it can also be a part of your morning running routine. Sundays are great for a run or bike ride down Paseo de la Reforma, because the street is roped off for pedestrians, runners and bikers. During the week, early mornings are best for this route before the pollution and chaos of the city kicks in. Avoid evenings from around 6 to 7 p.m. when most office workers will be getting off. Streets will be crowded and your tranquil run could be ruined by the honking of frustrated drivers stuck in Mexico City’s infamous traffic.
Parque México
This centrally located park in the city’s hipster Condesa neighborhood provides a scenic run without having to wander too far outside the city’s centric zone. This is undoubtedly an urban park, where you won’t forget that you are in the middle of a bustling city. Parque Mexico is often full of life, with a playground and dog park that are often packed, particularly on the weekends. Take a few laps around the 1-km circle surrounding the park to start your day off right.
Bosque de Tlalpan
This park in the south of the city is runner-friendly, with five different tracks for joggers to follow. It provides a tranquil escape from the city, where you can enjoy a run removed from the traffic and bustle among shade trees. You’ll even pass by a zoo. Keep in mind that evening runs aren’t possible here. The park is only open from 5 a.m to 5 p.m.
Cuemanco Canal
This can be a great run to combine with a boat ride in Xochimilco, the famous floating gardens in the south of the city. Otherwise, this route is a bit far away for tourists staying in the city’s more centric zones. But it’s worth the trip so you’ll be able to run alongside a piece of Olympic history. The 5-km loop traces the route of the same canals where Olympic rowers competed during the 1968 Olympics hosted in Mexico City.
