We only had a day to head up to the highlands and my husband was dying to try some scotch so we started our highlands adventure at Blair Athol! It was so great! They were extremely friendly, informative, and had an incredible variety of whiskeys. You can order a flight at the bar to taste multiple different blends or if you're not into it (like me, i'm a wimp with strong liquor), they will make you a perfectly balanced cocktail! The grounds themselves are absolutely gorgeous. I would highly recommend Blair Athol to anyone looking to try some tasty Scottish whiskeys!

Okay, folks, here comes an incredibly honest review. I've been to a number of distilleries in Scotland and Ireland, so I like to think I have a decent grasp on what an exceptional distillery is like. Believe me when I tell you, this is one of them. First, let me begin with the location. Blair Athol is tucked away in a small town near Pitlochry. It's a very cute, quaint little town. The people are kind and warm. Can't beat that. When you pull up to the distillery, you're greeted with a remarkably whimsical view of the distillery. The ivy that's grown on the buildings is honestly one of the cutest things you'll ever see. I scheduled a tour of the distillery, and it was phenomenal. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and also pretty darn funny. The man had jokes for days. He took us through the whole process of distilling whisky (not "whiskey," mind you, since that's the Irish spelling of the word ). Loved it. Now as for the scotch itself - it's very hard to beat. Easily one of the best ones I've ever tried. It's smooth, aromatic, and beyond flavorful. I should have bought much more than a couple bottles. I can't tell you how much I enjoyed Blair Athol distillery. You really really really need to come here!

With a son living in Kentucky (the heart of Bourbon country), I've been on a number of distillery tours - all of which were producing bourbon. So, I was really interested in touring a distillery that was distilling Scotch. The Blair Athol Distillery is not a large facility but gave us a very good and pretty in-depth overview of the process for making Scotch whiskey. While I've heard the term "single malt" Scotch, I really wasn't consciously aware that most Scotch whiskeys are blended products. Unlike the rules for Bourbon, Scotch from different batches and/or different distilleries can be blended before bottling. The rules governing Bourbon distilleries in Kentucky are much stricter. For example, unlike Scotch which can be aged in a variety of barrels, Bourbon can only be aged in new oak barrels that have been charred on the inside. The tour was very informative and it was especially interesting to see and contrast the differences between distilling Scotch and Bourbon.

Whst a cool little Scotch whisky distillery in the Highlands area. I bought a bottle to take home as well as a dram glass. Good Scotch whisky and good prices in an idyllic setting.

Photo of Natalie W.

The tasting room is very pleasant and the bar is well designed. The bartenders were fairly knowledgeable about the whiskies stocked, which were numerous. This distillery is part of the Diageo family and you can sample many of the Diageo-owned products there which is both nice and diminishes the singularity of the experience. It's a pretty enough place in a pretty enough little down, but there was nothing exceptional, in my opinion, that would make this a must-do if you're in the area.

My husband and I are visiting Scotland for a 10 days trip vacation with a 26 people group on a Scotland and Ireland CTE Vacation company. In one of our excursions we stop at at Blair Athol Scotch Distillery on one of the small town call Pitlochry in Scotland. We had a such a fun time scotch tasting. Not a big fan of scotch, but this type distillery had the best smooth scotch you will ever have. You can't buy this type of scotch in any stores only sold at this distillery, If you find yourself visiting Scotland make sure to stop by for a little scotch taste, you won't regret it so many fun memories.

Such a cool distillery! The 4th oldest in Scotland and lies on a beautiful piece of property. The tasting at the end was fantastic (we did the 3-tasting option). If you are lucky enough to get Jamie, thank your lucky stars. He's knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and downright hilarious. He answered every question we threw at him and gave us a wonderful look into the distillation process from start to finish. A must-see if you are in the area.

This is my second whisky distillery tour this month and I have not been disappointed. The distillery is located near Blair Atholl and Pitlochry and is easily accessible from the town centre. It is true that about 70% of their produced Blair Atholl Single Malt Whisky is sold on to Johnnie Walker and the like, but the rest is kept by the distillery for their distribution of the 12 yr old single malt. They market their flavor as fruity, sweet and nutty. Some % are used for Arthur Bells own Brand called Bell's, which is also a blended Scotch Whisky. Tour members pay £6 per person. The entrance and reception room is very large with lots of seating possibilities. You can also walk around an introduction area that informs you of the early history of the distillery up to now. The tour guides are very knowledgeable and explained the necessary elements in just half an hour. We were shown the Mash Tunks, Fermentation and Still rooms and filling station, as well as part of their warehouse. Sadly, the barrels were displayed behind glass and you were not able to smell the evaporating Angel's share. Behind the glass we could see the barrels stored and some of them dating back to 1969, which will cost you about £700. Included in the price is a drum of 12yr old Blair Atholl Whisky that you can taste after the tour has finished. At the end of the tour you are able to buy some bottles of whiskey from their gift shop. They also sell Talisker, Caol Ila, Bells and other whisky's. The premises appear very clean and offer the perfect showcase for visitors to the area. Good thing is that it only takes 1.5 hrs from Edinburgh to get there by car.

I really enjoyed this tour! It was a great value (£11 for tour, dram and souvenir whisky glass). The staff was sweet and the bar / gift shop were nice. Would recommend to anyone visiting the area.
