Cruises from Mobile depart year-round. Four antebellum homes and the historic buildings on Dauphin Street are part of this Alabama city's 300-year legacy and Gulf Coast charm. Fort Conde, which also serves as the visitors center, is a reconstructed 18th-century fort where guides dressed in period costume lead tours, fire muskets and cannons, and re-create Mobile's early days. The West Africans who were transported to Mobile in the last cargo of slaves to land on U.S. soil created a vibrant community now known as AfricaTown, an important cultural gem. Other places of interest include the aquarium on Dauphin Island, Fort Gaines, the USS Alabama and the Bellingrath Home and Gardens.

Carnival Spirit Begins Cruising From Mobile

Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Spirit has begun sailing from her new homeport in Mobile, Alabama to the Bahamas and the Caribbean.

Carniva l’s 2,124-passenger Carnival Spirit has greeted the first passengers departing from her new homeport in Mobile, Alabama. With Spirit ‘s inaugural sailing from Mobile, the cruise line brings more variety in itineraries departing from the port.

Captain Salvatore Siviero and Carnival Spirit ‘s officers welcomed passengers as well as notable guests as they boarded the ship—including City of Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson and Visit Mobile president and CEO David Clark —for an onboard celebration led by Sarah Beth Reno , Carnival’s SVP of guest operations.

“It’s great to see another Carnival funnel amid the Mobile skyline today. We are truly pleased to continue our strong partnership of more than 21 years with the city of Mobile,” Reno said in a press release .

“ Carnival Spirit is the perfect ship to carry out this new cruise program for Mobile, offering more accommodation options and all that our guests expect to find on a ‘Fun Ship,’ along with longer itineraries that offer guests a wider range of destinations to explore.”

Spirit ‘s chefs created a jumbo version of Mobile’s famous MoonPie dessert, decorated with Carnival’s iconic whale tail funnel design, for the festivities. In Mobile, MoonPies are customarily thrown to onlookers during Mardi Gras parades. Mayor Stimpson cut the first slice of the enormous treat, which was then served to guests on board.

“Mobilians love to see a cruise ship on the waterfront, and Carnival Spirit is the best ship we’ve ever had. It will offer unparalleled itineraries and experiences and have a positive economic impact on the local retailers, restaurants, and hotels that serve Carnival’s guests,” said Stimpson. “It was a pleasure to personally greet the first guests today and kick off what I know will be a successful cruising season.”

Guests sailing on the inaugural voyage from Mobile will enjoy an eight-day Bahamas cruise featuring stops in Bimini, Freeport, Half Moon Cay, and Nassau. The ship will then sail a series of six- and eight-day voyages now through March 2024.

Carnival has also opened cruises from fall 2024 to spring 2025 on Carnival Spirit from Mobile, featuring five-, six-, and eight-day itineraries, as well as a 12-day Carnival Journeys Southern Caribbean cruise—the first Journeys cruise scheduled from Mobile.

Carnival Spirit offers a wide range of amenities and many signature Carnival venues, including Alchemy Bar , Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse , and RedFrog Rum Bar . Guests will also have more choice of accommodations, with the ship offering twice the number of balcony staterooms offered on prior ships homeported in Mobile.

Cellular Phone Service

Carnival Cruise Line, through agreement with Wireless Maritime Services, offers an advanced roaming network on board Carnival Cruise Line ships, allowing you to make and receive calls while at sea using your own mobile phone and telephone number. International roaming charges will be conveniently billed to you by your home mobile carrier. Please contact your mobile carrier for specific rate information.

Stay Connected While At Sea On Your Cruise!

WMS offers an advanced roaming network onboard cruise ships allowing you to use your phone just like you do at home. Service for voice calls, texting (SMS) and data is available onboard while the ship is at sea. Once the WMS network is switched on, while roaming on our cruise ships, you will see a distinct display on your handset that differs from your home carrier. Depending on the make and model of your phone, the handset will read Nor 18, cellular@sea or 901 18.

As a reminder, international roaming charges apply and will be billed by your home carrier and not by WMS.

How It Works

Due to regulations, the WMSatSea network only works when the ship is at sea at least 12 nautical miles from shore (2 nautical miles in the European Union). When the ship is sailing on international waters, you will be able to use the WMS network for incoming and outgoing calls, SMS, and Data services (email and web surfing). Once in port, you can connect to local roaming networks as permitted by your home carrier.

Service Requirements

The WMSatSea mobile network is accessible by most mobile phones, supporting both GSM and CDMA technologies. You must have service with one of the nearly 400 carriers worldwide that have a roaming agreement with WMS. Some prepaid phone plans by some carriers are not currently supported. Please check with your mobile telephone service provider for details.

Charges, Billing, and Customer Service

Rates for roaming on ships are determined by your home carrier. Please note that calls to 800, 888, 866, and 877 numbers are not toll free. You will be billed by your home carrier for your international roaming usage on your regular mobile phone bill. Typically charges will appear on the next monthly bill, but depending on your carrier it may occasionally take up to 60 days for charges to appear on your phone bill. Please note that most cell phone carriers do not allow their unlimited rate plans to apply to cellular calls, texts or data used while onboard ships. Please contact your own carrier to confirm this and your specific pricing details.

Explanation of Rates and Charges

Service is provided by Wireless Maritime Services. Use of the WMS services requires compatible wireless phone and qualified wireless service with a home carrier provider that has a roaming agreement with WMS. Your home network will determine the international roaming rates you pay for usage.

WMS provides CDMA, GSM voice and DATA services. Other service features may not be available. Voice usage is measured during the time you are connected to your system, which is approximately from the time you press the button that initiates or answers the call until approximately the time the first party terminates the call. Voice usage for each call is billed in full minute increments with partial minutes rounded up to the next full minute. Data usage for each billing record will be rounded up to the next kilobyte and a cost will be associated with each billing record and rounded to the nearest cent.

Availability, timeliness and reliability of service are subject to radio transmission limitation caused by system capacity, system repairs and modifications, your equipment, signal strength, weather and other conditions. You will only be able to call and text message to certain countries. Other restrictions and limitations apply for service.

SERVICES PROVIDED

USA, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean: Dial +, the country code and the full number; Verizon Wireless/Sprint users dial 011, the country code and the full number. Other Countries: Dial 011, the country code, city code and local number.

Text Messaging (SMS)

Text messaging service is available on most compatible devices, depending on your wireless service provider. Address your text message to your North American number with 1 + area code and number.

If your home carrier supports GPRS, EDGE or EVDO data service, you can check email, surf the web and share photos while traveling just as you would at home.

Most users will be able to check their messages by pressing and holding the 1 key. Please note that some home carriers charge for messages deposited to and retrieved from voicemail while a customer is roaming. Please contact your home carrier customer service with any questions about using your voicemail.

Will my phone work on the WMS network?

WMS provides connectivity for customers of nearly 400 mobile cell phone companies around the world. With rare exceptions, your carrier should be supported by WMS. It should be noted that your carrier must allow you to roam internationally in order for your phone to work onboard a WMS vessel. A complete list of the mobile phone operators with whom WMS has roaming agreements is listed on the WMS website under FAQs: www.wmsatsea.com/carrier-list.html

How does your service work?

Our service operates over a satellite, or VSAT connection. Once your ship is at least 12 nautical miles out to sea (or at least2 nautical miles in EU countries), the WMS network turns on and you will automatically connect to it. Please note that cruise ship roaming rates will apply. Our service will stay on for the duration of the time that the ship is sailing at sea. Once your ship approaches land again and is within 12 nautical miles from shore (or 2 nautical miles in the EU), our service is turned off and your phone will pick up local service. If you are able to pick up local service in the port areas you will be charged a different rate by your carrier then the Cruise Ship Roaming rate. Contact your carrier for pricing and details.

How do I connect my phone to the WMS network onboard my ship?

Compatible devices and carriers connect automatically. You do not need to do anything special to connect to the service.

How do I dial out?

Simply dial 1 plus the area code and number to call anywhere in North America. Dial + along with the country code and number to call non-US destinations. Verizon Wireless/Sprint/Alltel user’s dial 011 country code and number to non-US destinations.

How much will it cost to use my cell phone onboard a ship?

Rates are set and determined solely by your cell phone carrier—WMS has no involvement whatsoever in the retail rates your carrier charges for cruise ship roaming. For precise rates you will pay onboard, please contact your carrier’s international roaming department directly to confirm their Cruise Ship Roaming Rates for voice calls, texting, and data if applicable.

When will you send me a bill for service used onboard a cruise ship?

All billing is handled by your cell phone carrier, not by WMS, and you will be billed for any charges incurred while onboard a ship on your next monthly cell phone bill directly from your carrier.

If my phone is left on and I do not use it, will I be charged?

In some cases, a phone that is left on, but not used, may incur charges. If a voice call is received but not answered, and the caller leaves a voicemail it is possible you will receive a charge for a voice call. If a text comes through and the phone is left on, you may be charged for a received text. Please note that smartphones (Blackberries, iPhones, Androids and other PDA devices) are constantly looking for data connections in order to perform updates and other synchronization steps. Therefore, it is possible that if you leave your PDA device on, you will incur data charges. Please contact your carrier for more information on data charges.

I did not use my phone onboard a cruise ship and I received charges – how do I get a refund?

Any questions or issues regarding billing must be handled through your carrier. WMS has no involvement at all with retail charges applied to your monthly bill by your cell phone provider.

Are there any prepaid packages for voice minutes or data available to use this service?

WMS does not offer any prepaid packages for passengers.

Will my unlimited rate plan apply to your service?

Generally speaking, most cell phone carriers do not allow their unlimited rate plans to apply to calls, texts or data used while roaming on international waters. Please contact your own carrier to confirm this and your specific pricing details.

If I buy a prepaid cell phone, can I use it onboard the cruise ship?

WMS currently does not support any US prepaid cell phones with our service.

Do you offer internet access?

Provided that WMS has a roaming agreement with your cellular service provider for GPRS (data) service, you will be able to use our network to access cellular data services (e.g., internet access, email and web browsing) with your GPRS capable cell phone. GPRS roaming rates also apply when using an air card. Please check with your carrier to determine the rates you will be charged by them. Carnival also offers internet access plans that you can purchase onboard.

Special Note for CDMA users: CDMA users who have a world phone will not have access to data services if your phone is set to GSM. Your CDMA phone must be set to CDMA.

Brevard couple seeking retribution after Carnival cruise passengers return to flooded cars

carnival cruise mobile

Exactly two weeks before Christmas, Brevard's Wesley and Stephanie Royal arrived back at the Port of Charleston in South Carolina following a four-night cruise to the Bahamas aboard the Carnival Cruise Sunshine.

When they got to the parking lot where their vehicle was, they were shocked. A storm had passed through the Charleston area a few days before, dumping over 4 inches of rain, and since the parking lot was so close to the shore, all the cars in the lot received storm damage from the saltwater, Stephanie Royal said.

"Over 400 cars were affected by the damage due to saltwater," she told the Times-News on Dec. 23.

None of the cars would start.

A long way home

Like all of the other passengers who parked in the lot damaged by the storm, the Royals had to scramble to figure out what to do so they could get back home when they encountered the shocking state of their cars at the port.

Stephanie Royal said no one was informed that their cars had received so much damage.

"When we came off the ship, none of the carnival staff informed us that this had occurred. The captain and crew on the ship didn't inform us either. Once we were rushed off the ship after being delayed 6 hours and got back to the lot, the Port Authority didn't inform us either," she said.

The bad weather didn't just affect the cars. The Royals said it was rough weather during most of the cruise, too, which made the return to Charleston delayed.

"We were originally due back at port by 7 a.m., but due to weather, we were delayed six hours, which put us back at port around 1 p.m. From 1-4 p.m. we were stranded," Stephanie Royal said. "We managed to get a rideshare to the airport for a car rental. We returned to the parking lot at 6 p.m. to get our belongings from my car. People were still stranded waiting on help."

She said she and her husband drove back to Brevard that evening and got home after 11 p.m. That was after spending $55 for a rideshare to the airport and an additional $400 for a rental car to get back home.

Who is responsible?

So far, South Carolina Ports Authority has only issued a refund of the parking fee, Stephanie Royal said.

"We got a parking refund but that's it. We're still waiting on final closure of our totaled vehicle from the insurance company.

According to past reporting by USA TODAY , a spokesperson for Carnival Cruise Lines said in an emailed statement, “We regret that some of our guests’ vehicles parked in the port’s lot were impacted by the recent storm.”

The cruise line then suggested passengers contact the South Carolina Ports Authority, since the parking lot was not a Carnival facility.

More: Excluding restaurants, businesses that opened, closed in Hendersonville in 2023

According to an article in the Charleston Post and Courier, the South Carolina Ports Authority said it isn’t responsible for the hundreds of cars damaged but did provide documentation vehicle owners can use to file insurance claims. The Ports Authority then refunded parking fees and allowed the vehicle owners to leave their cars in the lot for as long as they needed to.

"In my opinion isn't nearly enough to cover the length of getting back home and being stranded in an area we do not know well. I have also issued a complaint to the town of Charleston to make changes in how they handle parking there," Stephanie Royal said.

The Times-News reached out to the South Carolina Ports Authority on Jan. 2 but didn't receive a reply. There is a notice to cruise passengers on the Ports Authority's website, informing them that they are "parking at their own risk."

"SCPA assumes no liability for theft, collision, accidents, fire or other damages of any kind to personal property from any cause whatsoever. SCPA assumes no responsibility or liability for property left in a vehicle,"the website says.

Stephanie Royal said passengers leaving for the Carnival cruise out of Charleston are forced to park in one of the Ports Authority parking lots, which are at sea level.

"We have no choice as passengers but to park there to board the ship. We even had a rough cruise due to the weather, which didn't make the return any better," she said.

'A mess that could've been prevented'

Stephanie Royal is hoping the incident will cause big changes for the cruise parking in the Charleston area.

"There are a lot of people that do not know how bad this area can flood but the Port Authority doesn't inform the public about it, either. We have been trying to let the public know that this is the way it will be until they close it down in December 2024.

"We feel as though not enough was done, and this mess could have been prevented. They were well informed bad weather was coming but didn't take the necessary parking precautions. The lack of communication between the ship crew and port authorities is beyond terrible."

More: Henderson Co. Health Dept. confirms first flu-related death of the 2023-24 flu season

Royal believes the crew could have informed the passengers what was happening so that they would have information before leaving the ship.

"It's apparent that the Carnival crew at debarkation was informed not to say anything to us because of fear of passengers bombarding them for help and information," she said. "At the very least the Port Authority employees in the parking area could have informed us once we got on their lot. It was up to us to find that our cars were flooded and totaled. We are hoping to share this information to forewarn future passengers boarding the Carnival cruise line and parking in this area."

Royal Caribbean, Carnival Cruise Toward 'The Next Wave of the Rising Tide': Goldman Sachs

This optimism stems from significant industry shifts leading to improved business models “with several incremental pricing tailwinds still to come,” according to a team of equity analysts led by Lizzie Dove.

The firm highlights four key factors expected to drive multi-year pricing tailwinds: a favorable supply/demand setup for cruise operators, the positive impact of new ship launches and fleet upgrades, advancements in revenue management reducing the need for discounting, and future land investments enhancing overall value.

This optimistic outlook is underpinned by the potential for significant balance sheet improvements across these companies, promising a more attractive valuation and broader investor interest moving forward.

“RCL is currently the leader, but CCL is about to catch up,” Goldman Sachs wrote.

The ‘Halo Effect’

According to the Goldman Sachs report titled “Cruise: The next wave of the rising tide,” the launch of new ships will drive demand for cruise travel.

Royal Caribbean is recognized for its leadership in capitalizing on these trends, with new vessels like the Icon of the Seas predicted to outperform, generating ticket price premiums of over 140% for certain voyages in September 2024 and March 2025 compared to other ships in the fleet.

“Search for cruises spiked significantly around the launch of the Icon of the Seas,” analysts wrote.

With the upcoming launches of several new megaships, including Utopia of the Seas this year and Star of the Seas in 2025, the investment bank anticipates a continued positive momentum for the cruise industry, further broadening the reach of cruise lines.

In addition, cruises continue to represent a competitive alternative to land-based travels. Goldman Sachs found that cruises are approximately 27% less expensive than comparable land-based all-inclusive resorts, even when accounting for additional cruise-related expenses.

Price Targets Reflect Upside Potential

In their analysis, Goldman Sachs sets a price target (PT) for Royal Caribbean at $162, implying a 25% upside from current levels, due its superior execution and strategic fleet optimization.

Carnival Corp. also receives a Buy rating with a PT of $20, implying a 20% upside from current prices, as the firm anticipates a favorable outlook for 2024, supported by brand improvements, controlled supply growth, and significant private island investments.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH), despite progress, is given a Neutral rating with a PT of $19, due to less conservative guidance for 2024 and pending evidence of cost efficiencies.

Is it safe to travel to Haiti right now? What travelers should know

carnival cruise mobile

The State Department is urging Americans not to travel to Haiti amid fresh gang violence in the country, which declared a state of emergency last week.

While neither the warnings nor violence are entirely new – Haiti has been a Level 4: Do Not Travel destination in State Department travel advisories since even before the 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moïse – a spate of recent high-profile attacks, including an attempt by armed gangs to seize control of the country’s main international airport, has sparked renewed urgency.

“The current security situation in Haiti is unpredictable and dangerous,” the U.S. Embassy in Haiti said in a security alert issued Sunday. “We are aware that there are few or no commercial options to depart Haiti safely at this time. As they become available, we urge U.S. citizens to take advantage of them. The U.S. Embassy’s ability to assist U.S. citizens is severely limited.”

The U.S. military stepped in to airlift American personnel “into and out of the Embassy” to augment security, U.S. Southern Command said Sunday in a statement to USA TODAY. Meanwhile, U.S. citizens in Haiti can fill out crisis intake forms and enroll in the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program program for updates.

Here’s what airlines and cruise lines are doing about trips to Haiti:

Haiti violence: Military airlifts American personnel out of embassy as Haiti spirals into violence

Are there direct flights to Haiti?

Three U.S. airlines typically operate direct flights to Haiti: American, JetBlue and Spirit. However, all three have temporarily suspended service and issued travel waivers for the Caribbean destination.

◾ American Airlines customers with flights scheduled to, through, or from Port-au-Prince (PAP) through March 15 may modify flights without paying change fees. Changes must be made by March 15 with the same origin and destination cities as the original booking.

◾ JetBlue Airways is waiving change and cancellation fees for travelers with flights scheduled to and from Port-au-Prince through March 22. Customers must rebook by March 27.

◾ Spirit Airlines is waiving change fees and fare differences on travel to, from, or through Cap Haitien (CAP) and Port-au-Prince through April 15. Travelers should rebook by April 30. After that, the airline said change fees would still be waived, but fare differences may apply.

Do cruise ships still go to Haiti?

Royal Caribbean and its sister line Celebrity Cruises stop in Labadee, Haiti , a private destination about six hours away from Port-au-Prince by car.

According to Celebrity’s website, it doesn’t look like the line has any sailings scheduled there until fall, but Royal Caribbean’s Adventure of the Seas, Explorer of the Seas, Independence of the Seas, Mariner of the Seas, Oasis of the Seas and Symphony of the Seas all have stops scheduled in Labadee over the next month. So far none have been canceled.

“The safety of our guests and crew is our top priority,” a Royal Caribbean spokesperson said in a statement to USA TODAY. “Our global security teams are closely monitoring the situation in the area, and at all times, we remind guests to remain aware of their surroundings while ashore. Should any changes be required, guests will be notified directly.”

The cruise line is aware of the travel advisory and has private security in the area. Only employees and guests are allowed on site. Guests are not allowed to leave the resort, partly for their safety.

Carnival Cruise Line to get 4th Excel-class ship, sister to Canaveral’s Mardi Gras

C arnival Cruise Line made a splash with the debut of Excel-class ship Mardi Gras out of Port Canaveral in 2021 and has since followed up with sister ships Carnival Celebration from Miami in 2022 and the new Carnival Jubilee sailing out of Galveston, Texas.

Now the three sister ships will get a fourth sibling, as Carnival Corp. announced Tuesday it has ordered construction of a new ship from the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, for a debut in spring 2027.

It’s actually the 10th Excel-class ship across Carnival’s brands that also includes the new Princess Cruises’ Sun Princess set to debut this year and begin sailing from Port Everglades this fall.

The class of ships run on liquefied natural gas, a cleaner burning fuel that’s part of cruise lines’ efforts to reduce carbon emissions. Mardi Gras became the first LNG-powered cruise ship to homeport in North America when it began sailing from Port Canaveral on July 31, 2021.

Disney Cruise Line’s new ship Disney Wish followed soon after along with Celebration out of Miami and Royal Caribbean’s new Icon of the Seas.

The 180,000-ton ship will have a 6,400-guest capacity. It’s the first new ship ordered by Carnival Corp. in five years with only one new ship among its cruise lines expected in 2025 and none in 2026.

“Building on our strong performance and growing momentum around the world, we are excited to resume our newbuild program and further enhance our global fleet with yet another state-of-the-art ship that will wow Carnival Cruise Line’s guests,” said Carnival Corp. CEO Josh Weinstein in a press release.

Carnival’s fleet recently grew to 27 ships as it took on and rebranded two vessels from sister cruise line Costa — Carnival Venezia in 2023 and Carnival Firenze, which will begin sailing with passengers in April. Carnival Venezia will begin winter Caribbean sailings out of Port Canaveral beginning in December.

Mardi Gras, Celebration and Jubilee, though, are the line’s premier vessels and largest in the fleet, each featuring the nearly 800-foot-long Bolt roller coaster, a neighborhood approach to the ship layout and the most cabin categories such as the family-friendly Family Harbor and adults-only Havana Cabana options.

“Our Excel-class ships have been a tremendous addition to the Carnival fleet and proven very popular with our guests,” said Carnival Cruise Line President Christine Duffy in the release. “As the world’s most popular cruise line, this new ship enables us to continue the growth of our incredible fleet.”
