Choice-Wyndham Merger Is a 50/50 Bet: What the Skift Travel 200 Reveals

Sean O'Neill , Skift

March 5th, 2024 at 3:22 PM EST

The market has become less skeptical of Choice's hostile takeover bid for Wyndham, despite many roadblocks. The Skift Travel 200 sheds light on the thinking behind this offer.

Sean O'Neill

Choice Hotels created a storm last October when it went public with a hostile takeover bid for Wyndham Hotels & Resorts . It is giving Wyndham stockholders until Friday to tender their shares .

Choice Hotels will use the response to gauge how much traction it has among Wyndham shareholders. It will use that response to decide if it should adjust or withdraw its offer and if it should continue to pursue its slate of nominee members for Wyndham ‘s board.

What are the chances of a merger happening as of today? Chances have improved since the deal was announced.

“It’s looking more like a 50/50 bet today,” said Seth Borko, Head of Research, at Skift Research.

Skift Research , using the using the Skift Travel 200 stock index and options data, estimated on October 20 that stock and options markets were assigning Choice only a 20% to 30% probability of success .

Odds Choice-Wyndham Will Happen : Marc h 2024 Update

One big change since October has been that Choice’s stock price has appreciated , and Wyndham’s share price has slightly risen, too — though Wyndham’s price continues to sit below the fair value price of the Choice offer.

Choice Hotels has said the estimated value of its offer is the equivalent of $90 a share in cash and stock.

Wyndham’s closing share price on October 16, before the merger proposal, was $69. The more investors think a deal will happen, the more one would expect the market to bid up Wyndham.

On Tuesday, Wyndham shares were trading above $75. Choice’s share price hovered near $113 .

Borko also takes into account the pricing of short-dated and long-dated options to buy Choice shares over the year. For instance, the current state of an option that Choice’s stock will be at least $85 on December 20 is currently implying that investors believe a 47% chance Choice’s stock will be at that level, suggesting implicit positive sentiment in a deal.

“Think of this as a creative benchmark for investor sentiment about a merger deal, though this model is making broad-brush assumptions,” Borko said. “The implied odds are derived from the ‘wisdom of the crowds’ and aren’t a direct, precise read, and the situation remains fluid.”

Hurdles to a Deal?

“We anticipate an announcement by Choice on Monday as to the results of the tender offer which may impact CHH’s next steps on moving forward on the merger,” wrote analysts Patrick Scholes and Gregory Miller at Truist in a report Tuesday. “At this time, we do not expect Choice to give up on the merger especially given the commentary and tonality from the management on our call today, including their description of the interactions with the FTC and seeming ‘normality’ of the second request proceedings.”

Choice executives last month reiterated their confidence that a business combination could be completed within “ a one-year timeframe ” and that they have seen “ progress ” on the regulatory review by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

Yet Wyndham executives said they had already faced $15 million in costs to answer FTC questions so far and that they faced additional questions from queries from four state attorneys general . They’ve asked their shareholders not to participate in Choice’s exchange offer.

U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren sent a letter on February 28 to the FTC’s chairperson calling for the agency to look closely at the merger because of her worries about potential antitrust issues.

“If Choice’s hostile takeover of Wyndham is successful, data presented by Wyndham to its shareholders indicates that the combined company would control 57% of the national market for economy hotel franchises, with its next largest competitor controlling 14% of the market,” Warren wrote. “The same data reveals that the combined company would amass an even larger share of the national midscale hotel franchise market — a staggering 67%.”

Choice executives have countered that a combined company would still face “ nine other major competitors, including Marriott, Hilton, and IHG ”  in the midscale and economy segments. “A Choice-Wyndham combination would leave the combined company well positioned to compete in this increasingly competitive landscape,” executives said.

Accommodations Sector Stock Index Performance Year-to-Date

What am I looking at?  The performance of hotels and short-term rental sector stocks within the  ST200 . The index includes companies publicly traded across global markets, including international and regional hotel brands, hotel REITs, hotel management companies, alternative accommodations, and timeshares.

The Skift Travel 200 (ST200)  combines the financial performance of nearly 200 travel companies worth more than a trillion dollars into a single number. See more hotels and short-term rental financial sector performance.

The Hotel Chelsea, which everyone calls the Chelsea Hotel or just The Chelsea, at 222 W. 23 rd Street, is essential to New York lore , art history, literature, rock and roll, the Beats, the Punks, Popular culture , and Western Civilization.

Tony Notarberardino moved into the Chelsea 1994. He’s lived there ever since. He began photographing the characters occupying the hotel two years later, a stunning archive which can be seen at ACA Galleries March 9 through April 13, 2024, during “Chelsea Hotel Portraits,” the first public presentation of Notarberardino’s black and white portraits of the extraordinary individuals drawn there.

Featured are the famous—Dee Dee Ramone and Debbie Harry—and the lesser known—Elias Jose Reramos, the hotel garbage collector along with staff from the hotel's El Quijote restaurant.

“They interested me as much as the famous people,” Notarberardino told Forbes.com. “I never thought the portrait was any better because they were famous.”

Fame was never the point. Their connection to The Chelsea was. Each one contributed something.

“You hear the classic stories about Sid Vicious, the Sex Pistols, but there was a lot of interesting people staying here that never got any recognition, and some I photographed,” Notarberardino explained.

A word of warning. Many of the photographs are sexually explicit in nature. Mirroring The Chelsea.

Tony Notarberardino, Damien. © Tony Notarberardino.

“There was a lot of crazy shit going on,” Notarberardino said, stating the obvious. “The first floor was like a flop house, there’d be prostitutes working out of here. When the whole Sex Pistols thing went down (1978), this was a dodgy place. Even when I moved in in the early 90s, people were like, ‘what are you doing living in the Chelsea Hotel?’ We had strip clubs around here. There was an S&M club two doors down.”

That’s all changed now.

After long-time owner Stanley Bard–who cultivated the The Chelsea’s artsy, Boehemian, anything goes atmosphere– was ousted from ownership and management of the property in 2007 , subsequent owners undertook a massive, messy, contentious series renovations costing tens of millions of dollars and lasting over a decade. Completed in 2022, the “new” Hotel Chelsea is a fancy Manhattan hotel with small rooms and expensive rates not unlike 100 others.

Notarberardino estimates roughly 25 holdout residents like himself who endured the renovation remain living among the tourists checking in and checking out.

“(I) had a good 16 years of the original Chelsea Hotel managed by the Bard family,” Notarberardino said. “Then it was sold and went through two or three owners before finally settling on the renovation you see now. Each time they sold the hotel, each owner didn't like what the previous owner did, so not only did we endure demolition once … it was like this ongoing nightmare to be honest. We didn't think it was ever going to be finished.”

Visit the Hotel Chelsea today–looky loos are welcome to wander the lobby admiring the art collection and vintage staircase–and you’ll find Lobby Bar and Café Chelsea, both among the most fashionable in town. They are designed to look original, authentic; neither are.

“As much as we long for the nostalgia, it’s nice living in the hotel now; it’s impressive,” Notarberardino admits. “I’m living in a 5-star hotel. Room service when I moved in, they gave you the number of the deli that would deliver 24-hours.”

El Quijote restaurant just off the lobby is original, but much smaller than it used to be. Lobby Bar took up much of the original footprint. The public is welcome to enjoy all three.

Love At First Sight

Tony Notarberardino photograph of Stanley Bard at the Chelsea Hotel. © Tony Notarberardino.

Notarberardino was in his early 30s when he came to New York and The Chelsea from Australia. He had a friend living there. The friend suggested he see if any rooms were available.

“212-243-3700, I’ll never forget it, it’s the number of the Chelsea,” Notarberardino remembers. “I called in from Sydney before I left and they (answered), ‘Chelsea Hotel.’ I thought I had the wrong number. I hung up and called back and I'm like, ‘I'm looking for so and so,’ and they sent me straight to his room. I'm like, ‘yo, man, what do you do in a hotel; how does that work?’ He’s like, ‘that's a long story.’”

Notarberardino had heard of the hotel like everyone else, but didn’t come to New York intentionally to stay there.

“When I arrived, I got my own room and I thought, well, this is okay, because they're offering long term, short term, overnight, I thought, well, I really don't know where to go so I did a deal with Stanley Bard (who) gave me this room,” Notarberardino said. “This was the first room I walked into New York City and I never left.”

That “deal” included $1100 a month for rent, “which I thought was expensive,” Notarberardino recalls. “It probably was. Fast forward and (rent) hasn’t really changed. This apartment anywhere in Chelsea (now) would be worth $5,000 for sure.”

Stanley Bard would accept art in lieu of cash for rent. Andy Warhol gave him paintings to cover expenses of Factory members staying there.

“You need people like that. Stanley was really sympathetic to artists. He helped me out in the early days because I didn’t have any money. He let the rent slide here and there. He wouldn’t hassle you if you explained the situation,” Notarberardino said. “That helped me be able to stay here because otherwise I probably would’ve moved, and certainly, if I didn’t have this room, I wouldn’t be in New York. There’s no way. This is a magical place and it suits me.”

Love at first sight.

“It completely changed my life,” he says of the apartment. “I just felt like I was home. Immediately.”

The photographer has a classic, corner double unit. The spacious living room includes a fireplace and ceilings over 10-feet high. There’s a large bedroom with a big closet and a small kitchen.

His home’s vintage wood floors are cracked with big chunks gone. Original 1880s woodwork surrounds the windows. It’s dark and ornate with rugs, candles, velvet, mannequin forms, a large Buddhist figure, and white cat occupying the space. Empty picture frames and old mirrors cover the walls. Carnival masks, books, a catch-all of antiques and eclectic bric-a-brac adorn every surface. The bedroom ceiling is painted cerulean blue with yellow and red starbursts.

Bossa nova and jazz along popular music from the 20s through the 60s plays in the background. It’s a vibe.

The spectacular front door lets passersby know this isn’t one of the hotel rooms.

It was here, in the apartment’s hallway, where all of the portraits in Notarberardino’s series–some 1500–were taken using a vintage 1960s Toyo-View 810GII camera. The old-timey kind that stands chest high on a tripod and produces 8x10 negatives.

Tony Notarberardino home and portrait camera setup inside Chelsea Hotel

“I had to talk them into coming into my room. You’re coming home at night, I'd see someone interesting sitting in the lobby–two, three in the morning–you go up to them and give them the, ‘hey, you want to come up to my apartment,’” Notarberardino said. “If you approach it the right way, and I found a way of doing that, I’d get a lot of ‘no’s,’ but I'd get some ‘yes’s’ too. Then, of course, the other tenants who I'd have to get to know because some people are private; some portraits took me 10 years to get.”

The Chelsea Hotel Today

The Chelsea’s Bohemian feel is a thing of the past. Fleeting whiffs tingle the senses, but it’s a business now. The upside is no one’s scoring heroin there or being carried out in a body bag.

The hotel mirrors how the entire city has cleaned up its act over the past half century.

“If you saw pictures of the West Side Highway in the 70s, it looked like a wasteland … like Beruit,” Notarberardino said. “It's hard to imagine 42nd Street was a red-light district, now its Disneyland. It literally was, shows like ‘Midnight Cowboy’ and all of those were shot around there. A lot of the people living (in The Chelsea) would be frequenting that.”

The Chelsea’s painters, poets, drag queens and junkies have been mostly replaced by tourists. Notarberardino counts himself among the last of a century’s worth of creatives to take inspiration there.

“I guess I’m a part of that legacy now, but I never thought I would be,” he said. “That was never my intention. (The photographs are) just another body of artwork that came out of here.”

An astonishing volume of books and plays and songs and paintings and, now, photographs. All produced at The Chelsea, and in some ways, produced by The Chelsea.

“Where that came from, I didn't know; I always thought that The Chelsea was on a vortex, some vortex that defied time,” Notarberardino guesses about the creativity inspired there. “You can certainly feel the energy. Such a creative energy. What this building contributed to the art world is phenomenal.”

Does he ever think about leaving?

“If I didn't have this place? Yeah,” he said. “This is kind of a magic portal. I can't walk away from this. Especially now, it’s my home.”

Notarberardino has a pair of daughters who grew up in the hotel he hopes to pass his apartment on to.

Sneak peek: Iconic Las Vegas hotel brand to open its 1st Arizona location. Here's where

first choice travel hotels

A years-in-the-making hotel from an iconic Las Vegas brand is opening soon in Arizona.

Caesars Republic Scottsdale will make its debut on Tuesday, March 6, opening across from Scottsdale Fashion Square.

The 11-floor hotel has 265 guest rooms, 20,000 square feet of meeting and event space, two pools with cabanas, a rooftop bar and lounge overlooking Camelback Mountain and two restaurants from celebrity chef Giada de Laurentiis,  her first in Arizona .

Bringing the Caesars Entertainment brand to Arizona was a matter of meeting customers where they are, said Richard Huffman, CEO of the Branson, Missouri-based HCW Development, which owns and manages Caesars Republic Scottsdale.

He said metro Phoenix residents are among the biggest customers of its Las Vegas resorts including its flagship Caesars Palace hotel and casino.

Here's what Caesars Republic guests can expect from the new hotel, and why a casino isn't one of them.

What's inside Caesars Republic Scottsdale guest rooms

The hotel has:

  • 159 one-king rooms.
  • 73 two-queen rooms.
  • Five penthouse suites.
  • 28 luxury suites. These include a bridal suite with mirrors, salon-style hair sinks and a champagne cabinet, plus wellness suites with Peloton bikes and yoga mats.

Each room has a view of the city and the surrounding landscape, including Camelback Mountain to the northwest and the McDowell Mountains to the northeast.

Rooms will have a bar equipped with wine glasses, martini shakers and drinks for purchase.

They also have voice-activated blackout shades, lights, TVs and room service, plus energy-efficient features like automated shade.

Caesars Republic Scottsdale's indoor, outdoor event spaces

Caesars Republic Scottsdale has 20,000 square feet of event space, including a column-free ballroom, five meeting rooms and an executive board room that seats up to 16.

There are also options for outdoor gatherings, including the seventh-floor pool deck and an eighth-floor veranda, which both integrate views of Camelback Mountain. Huffman said the veranda is an ideal spot for wedding ceremonies.

Between the event space and the bridal suite, Caesars Republic seeks to position itself as a must-stay hotel for weddings. He said 23 weddings are already booked.

Why there's no casino at Caesars Republic Scottsdale

One amenity you won't find at Caesars Republic Scottsdale is one that people commonly associate with the Caesars brand.

It's the first Caesars hotel without a casino.

Huffman said the reason is simple: Casinos are only legal in Arizona on tribal land.

The hotel does have a space for mobile sports betting on the seventh floor.

Caesars Republic and more: Biggest hotel openings and renos in Arizona in 2024

How much does it cost to stay at Caesars Republic Scottsdale?

Caesars Republic Scottsdale rates range from $379 to $1,300 per night through the spring. The highest rates were found on April 5 and 6, coinciding with the NCAA Final Four.

We found rates as low as $159 per night during the summer. Rates for the high season in the winter months start at $529 per night.

Huffman expects the hotel will attract a nationwide customer base, mostly affluent travelers in their 30s and up.

Why Caesars Republic chose Scottsdale for its 1st hotel

Caesars Republic is entering Scottsdale during a time when tourism is thriving there.

Scottsdale drew about 6 million overnight visitors (4.8 million domestic travelers and 1.2 million international travelers) in 2022, with domestic travel besting prepandemic levels, according to an October 2023 tourism study citing data from Longwoods International and Tourism Economics. Travelers had an economic impact of $3.2 billion through their local spending.

Recognition from TripAdvisor is making a difference, too. Scottsdale is one of two Arizona cities ranked among the most popular destinations for 2024 in the travel website's Travelers' Choice Awards.

Scottsdale Fashion Square is Scottsdale's most significant economic engine, a one-stop destination for shopping, dining and entertainment, said David Hyatt, Fashion Square's director of property.

What it lacked was a hotel, a void now filled.

"It was synonymous with helping people have everything they want at their fingertips," Hyatt said.

The customer demographics at Caesars' Las Vegas hotels informed the decision to open a Caesars property in Scottsdale. Huffman said Scottsdale was the No. 6 location where Caesars customers traveled from. (Los Angeles was No. 1.)

Citi Transfer Partners: Airlines, Hotels, and More

Our experts answer readers' credit card questions and write unbiased product reviews ( here's how we assess credit cards ). In some cases, we receive a commission from our partners ; however, our opinions are our own. Terms apply to offers listed on this page.

The information for the following product(s) has been collected independently by Business Insider: Citi Premier® Card, Citi Prestige® Card, Citi Rewards+® Card, Citi® Double Cash Card, Citi Custom Cash℠ Card, AT&T Points Plus® Card. The details for these products have not been reviewed or provided by the issuer.

  • Citi ThankYou points are valuable because the program partners with 14 airlines and 3 hotel chains.
  • Citi's hotel partner programs are Choice Privileges, Wyndham Rewards, and Accor Live Limitless.
  • Other partners include JetBlue, Air France-KLM, Singapore Airlines, and Cathay Pacific.

Overview of Citi Points Transfer

Earning transferable points with rewards credit cards is one of the best strategies you can use to maximize returns on your spending. Programs like Chase Ultimate Rewards ® and Amex Membership Rewards are popular with award travelers, in part because their transfer partners include numerous domestic airlines and popular hotel chains.

The Citi ThankYou Rewards program is a bit of an underdog in this regard, with just one domestic carrier (JetBlue) among airline transfer options.

Benefits of Transferring Citi Points

Despite having few domestic airline options, you can still squeeze excellent value from the program — in fact, some of Citi's international airline transfer partners offer lucrative sweet spots that allow you to book award flights for far less than other frequent flyer programs charge.

In addition, the program added Choice Privileges, Wyndham Rewards, and most recently Accor Live Limitless (ALL) to its partner roster, marking the first hotel transfer options since Hilton left the program several years ago.

That's on top of the numerous other ways to use your rewards points, like booking travel directly through the Citi ThankYou Travel Portal or cashing in rewards for gift cards and merchandise. These options are available to any ThankYou Rewards cardholder, but to unlock the ability to transfer points to all of Citi's airline partners, you'll need to have the Citi Premier® Card or Citi Prestige® Card (no longer available to new applicants) in your wallet.

Best Airline Transfer Partners

As with most transferable points programs, there are definitely some partners that are better than others. Depending on the partner and how you redeem your points, the value you get from your transfer can vary significantly.

Here's a look at the best Citi airline transfer partners.

Turkish Airlines Miles & Smiles

It may seem strange that one of the best uses of Citi ThankYou points is transferring to a European airline that most people are likely never to fly. But the real value of Turkish Airlines miles lies in using the Miles & Smiles frequent flyer program to book award flights on its Star Alliance partners.

For example, the Miles & Smiles partner award chart requires only 10,500 Turkish miles for an economy-class flight anywhere within the US, including Hawaii, on Star Alliance partner United Airlines. If you booked the exact same flight through the United MileagePlus frequently flyer program, you'd pay 25,000 United miles.

Using the Miles & Smiles program does take a bit of patience as its online booking site can be hard to navigate, but cheap award prices like these can make it worth the extra effort.

Air France-KLM Flying Blue

Air France and KLM share the Flying Blue frequent flyer program, and one of the best uses of Flying Blue miles is its recurring promo rewards. Each month, Flying Blue publishes a list of routes with a 25 to 50% discount on mileage costs. This can be a great way to stretch the value of your ThankYou points.

Rates for a one-way economy flight from the US to Europe range from about 15,000 to 30,000 Flying Blue miles. The number of miles required varies quite a bit depending on the date and if the route is on a monthly promo award. Keep in mind Flying Blue adds more taxes and fees than other programs, so you'll have to weigh the savings in miles and the increased cash cost.

Because it's a transfer partner of all of the major transferable rewards currencies, Flying Blue is a great place to combine points balances from different programs.

Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer

Singapore Airlines is also a member of the Star Alliance, which means that you can use KrisFlyer miles to book travel on partner airlines like United, Air Canada, and Lufthansa.

In fact, using Singapore Airlines is also cheaper than using United's own miles for flights anywhere in the continental US to Hawaii. Singapore also has a non-alliance partnership with Alaska Airlines, and you can use as few as 11,500 KrisFlyer miles to get to Hawaii as well.

For luxury aficionados, Singapore Airlines also flies the ultra-premium Singapore Suites first class on certain routes. Singapore rarely opens up award seats in Suites Class to partner airlines, so transferring to KrisFlyer is often the only way to book these bucket-list awards.

Virgin Atlantic Flying Club

Although Virgin Atlantic is headquartered in the UK, its mileage program offers a fair amount of value for US travelers. You'll often get the best deal from Virgin Atlantic miles when you book award flights on its SkyTeam partners, like Delta.

Because Delta no longer publishes an award chart, the cost of a flight in Delta SkyMiles can vary wildly depending on the route, date, and number of stops. Before you book an award flight using your Delta miles, it pays to check with Virgin Atlantic. It is quite common that the exact same Delta flight will cost fewer miles if you book with Flying Club miles.

Avianca LifeMiles

Avianca is also a member of the Star Alliance, which means that you can use its miles to book partners like United, Lufthansa, and Ethiopian Airlines. Avianca's award chart divides the US into three separate regions, with flights within a region requiring only 7,500 Avianca Lifemiles to book. Some US airline frequent flyer programs would charge 12,500 miles or more for the exact same flights.

Avianca also offers regular promotions that offer huge (150% or more) bonuses on buying or transferring LifeMiles. This can make it easy to top off your balance if you just need a few more miles to book your next trip.

Good Citi Airline Transfer Partners

Some Citi airline transfer partners can provide decent value, but only in certain situations.

Etihad Guest

Etihad is not a member of any airline alliance but has a number of non-alliance partnerships that can provide good value for your Citi ThankYou points. These include Czech Airways (Prague to Seoul in business class for 25,610 Etihad Guest miles) and Royal Air Maroc (New York-JFK to Casablanca for 22,000 miles in economy or 44,000 miles in business class).

Cathay Pacific Asia Miles

Cathay Pacific is a member of the Oneworld alliance and has a distance-based award chart. The number of miles you need will depend on whether you are flying only Cathay Pacific or if you are flying one of its Oneworld partners, like American Airlines or British Airways. A flight from Los Angeles to Hong Kong on Cathay Pacific is only 27,000 miles in economy or 84,000 miles in business class.

Qantas Frequent Flyer

Like Cathay Pacific, Qantas is also a member of the Oneworld alliance and also has a distance-based award chart. The best value for using Qantas miles is on short flights under 600 flown miles on either Qantas or Oneworld partners like American Airlines. These short flights can be had for only 8,000 Qantas miles.

JetBlue TrueBlue

The number of points required for a JetBlue award flight is directly tied to the cash price of a ticket, so it's hard to get outsized value from your TrueBlue points. Still, it is possible to save points by transferring your Citi ThankYou points to JetBlue instead of using them directly to book a paid flight through the Citi portal.

Remember that JetBlue is the only Citi airline transfer partner that you can use without having the Citi Premier® Card or Citi Prestige® Card (though at a lesser ratio of 1,000 ThankYou points to 800 JetBlue points).

Citi Airline Transfer Partners That Aren't Great Value

The rest of the Citi ThankYou airline transfer partners are generally not worth considering, except for extremely niche redemptions.

Aeromexico Club Premier

Aeromexico uses kilometers instead of miles, so its award chart is generally inflated by 1.6x compared to other programs. While other bank program points, such as Amex Membership Rewards , transfer to Aeromexico at a rate of 1:1.6, Citi transfers at only 1:1.

Eva Air Infinity MileageLands

The award chart for Eva Air Infinity MileageLands is not spectacular when compared to most other airline programs, and you'll generally find better value elsewhere. Eva Air does have some generous stopover allowances, though you can't book stopovers online — instead, you'll need to call the airline directly.

Emirates Skywards

While Emirates first-class cabins are among the best in the world, it's best to use partner miles to book these awards. While Emirates recently reduced the astronomical fuel surcharges they charge on Skywards award tickets, there are other mileage programs that offer better value.

Qatar Airways Privilege Club

Like fellow Gulf carrier Emirates, Qatar has a great premium cabin flight experience that is best booked with partner miles. In Qatar's case, rather than transferring Citi ThankYou points to Qatar Airways Privilege Club, it's better to use American Airlines AAdvantage miles to fly on Qatar Airways.

Thai Airways Royal Orchid Plus

Thai Airways is currently in the middle of bankruptcy, spurred on at least in part by the limited travel demand due to the pandemic. And while bankruptcy does not mean that your Royal Orchid Plus miles would all of a sudden become worthless, it does give you one more reason to avoid transferring your ThankYou points here.

Hotel Partners

It's possible to get decent value from Citi's hotel partners, Choice, Wyndham, and Accor, but because many of their brands are budget-friendly, you might be better off saving your points and paying cash instead. It's also possible to redeem Citi ThankYou points at a rate of 1 cent apiece for stays at these chains by booking through the Citi Travel Portal.

Accor Live Limitless (ALL)

Citi's newest transfer partner is Accor Live Limitless (ALL), which comprises 45 brands across over 5,000 properties worldwide. Accor hotels include Fairmont, Raffles, Sofitel, SLS, and Swisshotel, but most of its properties are located outside the US, making this a better deal for international travelers.

This transfer option is only available to Citi Premier and Prestige cardholders, with a transfer ratio of 2:1 (2 Citi points equals 1 Accor point). Accor doesn't have an award chart; instead, you can redeem points in 2,000-point increments toward a stay discount, where 2,000 points equal 40 euros off your bill. That makes Accor points worth just over 2 cents each, but since there's a 2:1 transfer ratio from Citi, you'll only get a value of just over 1 cent per Citi point (depending on the current exchange rate).

Choice Privileges

The loyalty program of Choice Hotels, Choice Privileges includes brands like Comfort Inn, Quality Inn, Clarion, Cambria, and Ascend Collection hotels. Award prices start at 8,000 points per night and go up to 35,000 points per night, with a few exceptions. Rates also vary depending on the season and even the day of the week you stay.

If you have the Citi Premier® Card or Citi Prestige® Card, the transfer ratio is 1:2 (1 ThankYou point equals 2 Choice points), with transfers in 1,000-point increments. The no-annual-fee Citi Rewards+® Card and Citi ThankYou® Preferred Card have a transfer ratio of 1:1.5 (1 ThankYou points equals 1.5 Choice points), with transfers also in 1,000-point increments. And if you have the Citi® Double Cash Card , you also have the ability to transfer to Choice at a 1:1.5 ratio.

Wyndham Rewards

Wyndham Rewards includes familiar brands like Super 8, Days Inn, Howard Johnson, and Travelodge — as well as over 40,000 vacation rentals through its partnership with Vacasa.

With the Citi Premier® Card or Citi Prestige® Card, you'll get a 1:1 transfer ratio to Wyndham. Otherwise, with the Citi Rewards+® Card, Citi ThankYou® Preferred Card, and Citi® Double Cash Card, the ratio is 5:4 (1,000 Citi ThankYou points = 800 Wyndham points).

Wyndham's award structure is simple — you'll pay 7,500, 15,000, or 30,000 points for an award night, depending on the property. With Vacasa vacation rentals, you'll pay these fixed points rates per listed bedroom.

Other Rewards Programs

In addition to airline and hotel transfer partners, Citi ThankYou has one retail transfer partner.

Sears Shop Your Way

You can transfer your Citi ThankYou points to Sears Shop Your Way points at a rate of 1:10. Shop Your Way points are worth 0.1 cents each, and Sears does sell some third-party gift cards that you can buy with Shop Your Way points.

This would allow you to effectively redeem your Citi ThankYou points for 1 cent per point for gift cards (or other merchandise) available for purchase at Sears. Unless you already have Sears Shop Your Way points and need to top off your account for a redemption, it's easier to redeem Citi ThankYou points directly for gift cards through the ThankYou portal.

Transferring your Citi ThankYou points is a fairly straightforward process. Once you log into your account at thankyou.com, find "More Ways To Redeem" in the top header, then choose "Points Transfer." Or, select "Transfer & Share" in the main menu under "See everything that can be done with ThankYou Points."

After you've selected "Points Transfer," you'll then see a list of Citi transfer partner options available to you. It's important to note that the first and last names on your ThankYou account and the account you're transferring to must match in order to be able to transfer.

Citi Citi Premier® Card

If you're looking for an all-purpose travel credit card with strong rewards, many ways to use your points, and an annual fee under $100, the Citi Premier should be on your shortlist. Beyond the welcome bonus offer, the Citi Premier® Card offers great 3x earning categories that just about anyone can take advantage of — and the rewards it earns are incredibly flexible.

For most of these partners, the transfer ratio is 1:1, with transfers in 1,000-point increments. The only exception for Citi Premier and Prestige cardholders is Accor (2:1). For other cardholders, JetBlue, Choice, and Wyndham, which are the only transfer partners available (along with Sears Shop Your Way rewards) if you don't have a Citi Premier® Card or Citi Prestige® Card have transfer ratios and availability that vary depending on the card you have.

It's important to note that ThankYou points transfers are one-way and nonrefundable — once you move ThankYou points to a partner, you can not transfer them back to ThankYou Rewards.

How to Earn Citi ThankYou points

You can earn Citi ThankYou points through welcome bonuses and spending on a variety of different Citi credit cards , including:

Remember, you can only access all of Citi's transfer partners if you have the Citi Premier® Card or Citi Prestige® Card. If you have multiple Citi ThankYou credit cards, you can combine your points into one ThankYou account.

Citi points can be transferred to a variety of airline and hotel partners, but not all airlines or hotels are partners. It's important to check the current list of Citi transfer partners for available options.

Transfer times vary by partner. While some transfers are instant, others may take several days to process. It's advisable to plan ahead if you need to use transferred points for specific bookings.

Once transferred, points are subject to the expiration policies of the partner program. This means they could expire if not used within the timeframe set by the partner.

Generally, there are no fees for transferring points from Citi to its partners, but it's always best to confirm any potential costs directly with Citi before making a transfer.

The best use of transferred points varies depending on personal travel preferences, the specific transfer partner, and the value of flights or hotel stays. Comparing redemption options can help maximize value.

Choice Hotels Offers Tesla Charging Stations at Participating US Hotels

Choice Hotels International has announced an agreement with Tesla to offer Tesla Universal Wall Connectors to participating Radisson, Cambria, Comfort, Country Inn & Suites, Quality Inn and other Choice-branded hotels across the U.S.

As part of the agreement, Choice-branded properties will add four or more charging stations for guests, helping to meet the growing demand for electric vehicle (EV) charging and eliminating one of the biggest pain points for EV drivers traveling for business or leisure.

"This agreement with Tesla allows our brands to further stand out by increasing access to EV charging for guests and potentially drive incremental topline revenue for hotel owners," said Dominic Dragisich, Executive Vice President of Operations and Chief Global Brand Officer for Choice Hotels International. "At Choice, we are focused on ensuring owners and operators of our hotel brands are set up to benefit from strategic agreements that drive booking consideration and value."

Cambria guests rank EV charging as one of the top three sustainability priorities they look for when booking a stay.

Offering over 7,500 hotels with more than 630,000 rooms across 46 countries and territories, Choice is positioned to address the growing consumer demand for EV charging. According to data from DK Shifflet, guests driving to the group’s hotels accounted for 82 percent of all Choice room nights in 2022, well above the industry average. Approximately 90 percent of Choice-branded properties in the U.S. are in suburban, interstate, and small-town locations, with 76 percent located within one mile of a highway entrance.

Currently, 41 percent of Choice's Cambria hotels offer EV charging, and by the end of 2024, all are expected to be outfitted with at least one charging station.

Travelers can filter for hotels that have EV charging capabilities on ChoiceHotels.com and the Choice Hotels app.

Choice's two co-brand credit card holders will receive accelerated everyday earnings when using an EV charging station installed at a Choice-branded hotel. Choice Privileges Select Mastercard cardholders will earn 5x points on qualifying purchases at EV charging stations, and Choice Privileges Mastercard cardholders will earn 3x points.

The ease of booking

The ease of the website was great and even better we manage to book our holiday cheaper on the First Choice site compared to tbt TUI site. Very happy.

This only for the booking as our holiday is not until 2025. Website was easy to use, easy to compare hotels/ resorts with what we wanted from a holiday. Booking process was easy, payment options were good. Communication since we booked with options for excursions, extras we may want to add.

Date of experience : February 11, 2024

Hi Ian, thank you for a wonderful review! We love to hear you found a great holiday and that the site was easy to use. From all the First Choice team, we wish you a fantastic holiday when it comes!

First Choice are always the best price

First Choice are always the best price. I found the booking system easy enough and I saved quite a bit for the same holiday with another company.

It is great to hear that your booking process was easy and that you got a good deal for your holiday. We hope to welcome you back for future holidays!

Glitchy system and S*** customer service

What went wrong? More like what went right?! And I've not even gotten to the holiday yet!!! I'm not sure what's worse. Their "system" which they blame for everything or their customer service. First, I book a holiday clearly showing a free child place in the summary online. The confirmation comes through and there's no free child place .... "I'm sorry but unless you have a confirmation showing you were entitled to a free child place there's nothing we can do about it". Of course I don't have a confirmation showing it. That's the problem!! Their customer services had already said my booking SHOULD have been eligible but no, without a confirmation showing it there was nothing they could do to fix it. It's the system you see .... God help me I will be screen shotting everything in future. Though certainly not with this POS company. Next (a few months later), I needed to remove someone from the booking. Obviously this was a loss of deposit situation which is fine. When the confirmation comes through, I see that they've removed the adult but put up the per person adult price by nearly £300 each. I call and what am I told? "The system generates these prices. There's nothing we can do to help you. I do understand that you're frustrated." That's all. That's the end of it. No help offered or even a second taken to work out if there was any possible solution. Just no.

Booked a holiday via quidco

Booked a holiday via quidco, claimed £100 cashback, cashback has been tracked since October 2022, holiday in June 2023. Quidco have chased this with first choice but they are yet to pay. Be aware if you book a holiday with first choice using cashback sites.

Date of experience : February 21, 2024

Thank you for your review Emily. I am very sorry to hear that you have not yet received your cashback through Quidco. So we can investigate this further for you, please can you email us with your booking reference and holiday details at the following address [email protected]. I hope we can help resolve this for you soon.

Easy to book good information

Good Evening Steve, thank you so much for taking the time to write a review, we really apricate your feedback and your five stars, if there is anything else we can help you with please do let us know.

Everything was great, until time of leaving the resort.Having tried to get on the App several times before we left the UK,I attempted to do same while away. Not possible. We had had no notification of collection pickup time (having been told we would be notified arrangements two days prior)so needed to contact Tui/First choice.Eventually we “chatted” to them for them to say they couldn’t give that information over the chat line.DUH!!!!In the end we had to organise our own lift to the airport luckily with the guy who collected us when we arrived, and so he said he would invoice Tui/First choice for it.We were clearly forgotten about. This is a basic thing-if they tell you you will be transported to and from the hotel-you expect to be given that information. Not leave it to the passenger to sort out.Aside from that the holiday was wonderful, but that was down to the resort being outstanding!

Date of experience : February 13, 2024

Thanks for taking the time to leave a review, it's very much appreciated. I'm sorry to hear there was some issues with your transfer time, we do have access to the transfer times, so I apologise if you were not given this information when you contacted us. I'm very pleased to hear you enjoyed your holiday and the resort. If you wish to discuss anything further, you can contact us via live chat on the First Choice website. Once again, thank you for taking the time to leave a review.

Disappointing but we’ve booked now!

Most of the booking is fine but when it came to the flights we were unable to book our seats until just before we go on the holiday. As we need seats together & with extra leg room. We didn’t get a choice on the date we needed, we had to fly BA as part of the package …who knew ! Disappointed to be honest but maybe this should be advised before you complete a booking……1st strike I’ve just been contacted by first choice apologising for us not being able to book the extra leg room for us all until just before the holiday. Then if they can help further please contact them …. Really ! They’ve not helped at all so far ….. the hotel looks fabulous just hope this doesn’t spoil our holiday to celebrate our sons birthday.

Date of experience : February 05, 2024

Thank you for your comments, I'm sorry to hear you were unable to book your seats until just before departure. If we can be of any further assistance please do not hesitate to contact us.

Great value package holiday

I have booked a great value package holiday to Tenerife with First Choice! We paid £60pp deposit and have to pay the remaining deposit balance early Feb and then the final holiday balance is due a few weeks later. This is the first holiday I have booked with First Choice. I found the First Choice website easy to use and navigate and there was lots of information detailed on the hotel pages. My only criticism would be how early before our departure date we have to pay the final balance but I know this is standard across a lot of holiday companies. We are looking forward to our trip and would recommend using First Choice!

Easy to book and competitive in price

Easy to book and competitive in price. The only reason for rating 4 rather than 5 is that there were no details about the rooms other than the basic superior. I booked a standard (no pic or description). I had to contact the hotel to see which room I was booked into (luxury). I’d have liked the extended deluxe as advertised on their own hotels website however this wasn’t available on first choice website. We are still very much looking forward to our visit though.

Date of experience : January 20, 2024

Thank you for leaving us a great 4 star review. We appreciate your feedback and we will take these comments on board. Our city break collections are relatively new to First Choice, we hope to update our websites soon with a more detailed description. Many thanks again and you need anything please don't hesitate to ask. Have a wonderful holiday!!

In a showcase of understated elegance by design, The Tasman is an architectural symphony an overture of 1840s Georgian heritage building to 1940s Art Deco a 2020s modern extension finale. Three Eras of Design

A hotel of luxury design and architectural distinction, The Tasman Hobart celebrates the city’s natural maritime advantage. Like a seafarer’s rope, it is a woven story of local materials and luxury finishes that seamlessly tie together three eras of design. In the Heritage building, original Georgian details have been restored and reimagined. Rooms feature original windows, restored fireplaces, original artwork and custom furnishings. The St. David’s Park Suite, the crown jewel of the heritage building, overlooks its namesake park and features a lofty ceiling reminiscent of the first ships arriving in Hobart, exposed sandstone walls and original artwork. Art Deco rooms are a vision of luxury with rich colors and materials and Blackheart Sassafras ceilings. Within the contemporary Pavilion building, rooms feature sweeping water views through floor-to-ceiling windows. The premier suite is Aurora Suite, with its spectacular outdoor terrace overlooking the Hobart’s harbour.
