Luxury Cruises to Vietnam

Vietnam cruises with Celebrity show you the many faces of this intriguing country. Ancient temples, incense heavy in the air, contrast with a backdrop of glassy skyscrapers. A constant stream of scooters and motorbikes forms a river of activity through the busy cities, where street food sizzles on roadside stalls. But there’s serenity, too. Historic palaces and ornate pagodas lie in the midst of dense tropical vegetation, while emerald rice paddies reflect the vast sky.

Join a cooking class to prepare fresh, spicy Vietnamese specialties. Take a cycling tour around the enchanting town of Hoi An. See the sheer-sided limestone towers of Halong Bay from a kayak, and delve into modern history in Ho Chi Minh City, with its poignant museums and nearby, the famous Cu Chi Tunnels. You’ll find a dazzling choice of activities and excursions on a luxury cruise to Southeast Asia with Celebrity.

Vietnam Cruise Highlights

Ancient temples.

Vietnam’s countryside is dotted with majestic temples displaying an ageless beauty of bygone cultures. My Son temple complex, near Danang, is one of the most impressive, dedicated to the Hindu god, Shiva. Although the crumbling buildings are partly consumed by tropical greenery, a visit here gives you an insight into the wealth and sophistication of Vietnam’s Cham dynasty. Near Hue, visit the Imperial City, a complex within the walled citadel that was once the seat of Vietnam’s Nguyen rulers.

Dazzling Scenery

When it comes to jaw-dropping natural beauty, Vietnam has it all. Some 1,600 jungly limestone towers are scattered across an often mist-shrouded sea in Halong Bay, where tooth-like mountains are reflected in mirror-calm paddy fields. In the far south, rivers criss-cross the vast maze of the green Mekong Delta, coconut palms lining their banks. You’ll find endless golden beaches, too, especially around Danang, lapped by the warm waters of the South China Sea.

Exciting Cuisine

Vietnamese food is both elegant and unique, and packed with contrasts. Spicy dishes are tempered with fresh herbs and vegetables, while crispy salads are paired with refreshing soups and noodles. During your cruise, you could learn to make classic dishes like crispy spring rolls, stir-fried beef, minty chicken salad, and green papaya salad topped with fresh shrimp. Even if you prefer not to cook, don’t miss a chance to browse Vietnam’s colorful markets and dine in a local restaurant.

Vietnam Cruise Ports

Hanoi (Halong Bay)

Ho Chi Minh(Phu My)

Hue/Danang (Chan May)

Vietnam Cruise Itineraries

Explore the coast of Vietnam on itineraries lasting either 12 or 13 nights. You could sail from Singapore to Tokyo, or between Singapore and Hong Kong in either direction. Ports of call include Ho Chi Minh City; Chan May, for Hue and Danang; the beach resort of Nha Trang; and Halong Bay, gateway to the capital, Hanoi, and magnificent limestone landscapes. Most cruises include an overnight in Halong Bay.

Itineraries

Why cruise to vietnam with celebrity cruises.

Celebrity’s luxurious ships take you along the coast of Vietnam in style. Toast to the end of a thrilling day ashore with cocktails at the al fresco Sunset Bar. Enjoy the flavors of iconic Italian dishes in Tuscan Grille, or specialty coffee and pastries from Café al Bacio. On Solstice-series ships, visit the Lawn Club on the upper deck for relaxing, sunbathing, or a game of croquet. Choose The Retreat for the ultimate in luxury, with access to an exclusive lounge and sundeck, fine dining in Luminae, exclusive to guests of The Retreat, and chic suite accommodation.

A cruise to Vietnam with Celebrity will give you an in-depth insight into this complex and fascinating country, from the buzz of cosmopolitan Ho Chi Minh City to the intricate, 19th century citadel of Hue and the French colonial architecture of Hanoi. You’ll have time to bask on the sandy beaches of Nha Trang, gaze at the otherworldly scenery of Halong Bay, and indulge in one of the most exciting cuisines in Southeast Asia.

Visa Requirements

The first thing you need to know before traveling from Malaysia to Vietnam is the visa policy. The good news is that as a Malaysian citizen, you can enter Vietnam without a visa for up to 30 days. This means that if you are planning a short trip or a single entry, you don’t need to apply for anything in advance. You just need to have a valid passport with at least six months of validity and two blank pages.

However, if you want to stay longer than 30 days or visit Vietnam multiple times within a year, you will need to apply for a visa. There are two options for this: visa on arrival or online e-visa.

Visa on arrival is a convenient option that allows you to get your visa at the airport when you arrive in Vietnam. You just need to fill out an online application form, pay a service fee and receive a visa approval letter by email. You then print out the letter and bring it with you along with your passport, two passport-sized photos and some cash (in US dollars) for the stamping fee. You can choose between a single-entry or multiple-entry visa for one month or three months.

Online e-visa is another option that allows you to get your visa electronically before your trip. You just need to fill out an online application form, upload a scanned copy of your passport and a passport-sized photo and pay a fee by credit card or PayPal. You then receive an e-visa code by email that you can print out or save on your phone. You can use this code to enter Vietnam at any international airport or land border crossing. You can only get a single-entry visa for 30 days with this option.

To avoid any visa scams or delays, make sure you use official websites or reputable agencies when applying for either option. You can also check the status of your visa online and print out the confirmation letter or code in case of any problems.

Flight Options

malaysia to vietnam cruise

The next thing you need to know before traveling from Malaysia to Vietnam is the flight options. There are many flights available from Malaysia to Vietnam, depending on your departure and arrival cities, budget and preference.

The most common option is to take a direct flight from Kuala Lumpur to one of the main cities in Vietnam: Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi or Da Nang. These flights take about two hours and are operated by various airlines, such as AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines, Vietnam Airlines and VietJet Air. The price range for these flights is between RM200 and RM800, depending on the season, demand and booking time.

Another option is to take a connecting flight via Singapore, Bangkok or other cities in Southeast Asia. These flights may take longer and cost more, but they may also offer more flexibility and choices for your itinerary. You can also use this opportunity to visit another country or city along the way. Some of the airlines that offer these flights are Singapore Airlines, Thai Airways, Cathay Pacific and Emirates. The price range for these flights is between RM500 and RM1500, depending on the route, stopover and booking time.

Transportation Modes

Once you arrive in Vietnam, you will need to know how to get around the country. There are many transportation modes available in Vietnam, depending on your destination, budget and preference.

One of the most convenient and fastest ways to travel within Vietnam is by domestic flights. There are many domestic airports in Vietnam, connecting major cities and tourist attractions. You can fly from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi in about two hours, or from Hanoi to Da Nang in about an hour. Some of the airlines that offer domestic flights are Vietnam Airlines, VietJet Air, Bamboo Airways and Jetstar Pacific. The price range for domestic flights is between RM50 and RM300, depending on the route, season and booking time.

Another way to travel within Vietnam is by train. There are several train routes in Vietnam, but the most popular one is the Reunification Express, which runs from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi, passing through many scenic and historical places, such as Nha Trang, Da Nang, Hue and Sapa. The train journey takes about 30 hours, but you can break it up into shorter segments and stop at different stations along the way. You can choose between different classes of seats or cabins, such as soft seat, hard seat, soft sleeper or hard sleeper. The price range for train tickets is between RM20 and RM200, depending on the class, route and booking time.

There are many bus companies in Vietnam, offering regular or express services between cities and towns. You can also find sleeper buses that have reclining seats or beds for overnight trips. Some of the bus companies that operate in Vietnam are The Sinh Tourist, Futa Bus, Hoang Long Bus and Mai Linh Bus. The price range for bus tickets is between RM10 and RM100, depending on the company, route and booking time.

Taxis are widely available in Vietnam, especially in urban areas. They are convenient and comfortable, but they can also be expensive and unreliable. You should always use reputable taxi companies, such as Mai Linh Taxi, Vinasun Taxi or Grab Taxi. You should also always use the meter or bargain for a fixed price before getting in. The price range for taxis is between RM1 and RM10 per kilometer, depending on the company, location and traffic.

Motorbikes are the most common and popular mode of transportation in Vietnam. They are cheap, flexible and fun, but they can also be dangerous and challenging. You can rent a motorbike from many shops or hotels in Vietnam, or you can buy one from a local or a traveler. You will need a valid driver’s license and an international driving permit to drive a motorbike in Vietnam. You will also need to follow the traffic rules and regulations, such as wearing a helmet, driving on the right side of the road and avoiding alcohol. The price range for renting a motorbike is between RM10 and RM50 per day, depending on the type, condition and location of the motorbike.

Bicycles are a great way to explore the countryside and rural areas of Vietnam. They are eco-friendly, healthy and cheap, but they can also be slow and tiring. You can rent a bicycle from many shops or hotels in Vietnam, or you can bring your own bicycle with you. You will need to have a good map or GPS device to navigate your way around Vietnam. You will also need to have some basic tools and spare parts to fix your bicycle if it breaks down. The price range for renting a bicycle is between RM5 and RM20 per day, depending on the type, condition and location of the bicycle.

Boats are a wonderful way to enjoy the waterways and coastal areas of Vietnam. They are scenic, relaxing and romantic, but they can also be slow and expensive. You can take a boat trip from many ports or docks in Vietnam, or you can charter your own boat with a captain and crew. You can choose between different types of boats, such as cruise ships, ferries, speedboats, junks or sampans. The price range for boat trips is between RM50 and RM500 per person, depending on the type, duration and destination of the boat trip.

To use each mode of transportation safely and efficiently, you should book online or at official counters, check the schedule and route map, follow the safety instructions and warnings and bargain or use meters for taxis.

The price range for hotels is between RM50 and RM500 per night, depending on the category, location and season.

Budget Tips

malaysia to vietnam cruise

One of the most important and challenging things to do before traveling from Malaysia to Vietnam is to plan your budget and manage your expenses. Vietnam is a relatively cheap country to travel in, but it can also be expensive if you are not careful. You need to estimate your daily expenses, set a realistic budget and track your spending. Here are some budget tips that can help you travel from Malaysia to Vietnam on a budget:

Estimate Your Daily Expenses

The first step to plan your budget is to estimate your daily expenses in Vietnam. This will help you determine how much money you need to bring or exchange, and how long you can afford to stay in Vietnam. You can use online tools, such as Budget Your Trip or Numbeo, to get an idea of the average costs of various items or services in Vietnam, such as food, drinks, transportation, accommodation, attractions and activities. You can also read online blogs or guides, such as Lonely Planet or Nomadic Matt, to get more insights and tips from other travelers who have visited Vietnam.

Here is a rough estimate of the daily expenses for a solo traveler in Vietnam, based on a mid-range budget:

  • Food: RM30-RM50 per day. This includes breakfast, lunch and dinner at local restaurants or street stalls, as well as snacks and drinks. You can save money by eating at local places, avoiding touristy areas and sharing dishes with others.
  • Drinks: RM10-RM20 per day. This includes water, coffee, tea, beer and other beverages. You can save money by drinking tap water or filtered water (make sure it is safe), buying drinks at supermarkets or convenience stores and avoiding alcohol or imported drinks.
  • Transportation: RM20-RM40 per day. This includes buses, trains, taxis, motorbikes, bicycles and boats. You can save money by using public transportation or shared rides, bargaining or using meters for taxis and renting motorbikes or bicycles for longer distances.
  • Accommodation: RM50-RM100 per night. This includes hostels, homestays, airbnbs or budget hotels. You can save money by booking in advance or during low seasons, using accommodation booking websites or apps and staying at cheap or free accommodation options.
  • Attractions and Activities: RM50-RM100 per day. This includes entrance fees, tours, guides, tips and souvenirs. You can save money by visiting free or cheap attractions, joining free or low-cost tours, hiring local guides or joining groups and taking advantage of discounts or freebies.

Based on this estimate, the daily expenses for a solo traveler in Vietnam are between RM200 and RM400 per day, depending on the lifestyle, choices and activities of the traveler.

Set a Realistic Budget

The next step to plan your budget is to set a realistic budget for your trip to Vietnam. This will help you control your spending and avoid overspending or running out of money. You can use online tools, such as TravelSpend or Trail Wallet, to create and manage your budget. You can also use a spreadsheet or a notebook to record and track your budget.

To set a realistic budget, you need to consider several factors, such as your income, savings, goals, priorities and preferences. You also need to factor in some extra costs, such as visa fees, flight tickets, travel insurance, emergencies and contingencies.

Based on these factors, you can calculate your total budget for your trip to Vietnam, and divide it by the number of days you plan to stay in Vietnam. This will give you your daily budget, which you can use as a guideline to allocate your money for each category of expenses.

For example, if you have a total budget of RM5000 for your trip to Vietnam, and you plan to stay for 15 days, your daily budget is RM333 per day. You can then allocate your money for each category of expenses, such as RM50 for food, RM20 for drinks, RM40 for transportation, RM100 for accommodation and RM100 for attractions and activities. You can also set aside some money for extra costs, such as RM500 for visa fees, RM1500 for flight tickets, RM300 for travel insurance and RM500 for emergencies and contingencies.

Of course, you can adjust your budget according to your needs and wants, but you should always try to stick to it as much as possible.

Track Your Spending

The final step to plan your budget is to track your spending during your trip to Vietnam. This will help you monitor your progress and evaluate your performance. You can use online tools, such as TravelSpend or Trail Wallet, to record and track your spending. You can also use a spreadsheet or a notebook to write down and review your spending.

To track your spending, you need to record every transaction that you make in Vietnam, such as buying food, drinks, transportation, accommodation, attractions and activities. You also need to record the amount, the date, the category and the currency of each transaction.

You can then compare your spending with your budget, and see if you are on track or off track. You can also analyze your spending patterns, and see where you are spending more or less than expected. You can also identify any problems or issues that may affect your budget, such as exchange rates, inflation, scams or theft.

Based on this comparison and analysis, you can make any necessary adjustments to your budget or spending habits, such as cutting down on unnecessary expenses, finding cheaper alternatives, negotiating better deals or increasing your income.

By tracking your spending, you can ensure that you are traveling from Malaysia to Vietnam on a budget, and that you are not wasting your money or missing out on anything.

These are some of the budget tips that can help you travel from Malaysia to Vietnam on a budget. Of course, there are many more tips and tricks that you can learn and apply, depending on your situation and experience. You can always find more information and advice online, or from other travelers who have been to Vietnam.

To travel from Malaysia to Vietnam on a budget, you should estimate your daily expenses, set a realistic budget and track your spending.

Doomed Malaysia Airlines flight 370 may see two new searches for the Boeing 777 in near future

Six years after official searches failed to find any sign of missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, two private companies are proposing to carry out new search operations in the southern Indian Ocean.

US-owned marine robotics company Ocean Infinity — which led the second official search in 2018 — said in a statement that it will be using new analysis and revamped technology for its second attempt to recover the missing wreckage, and has submitted its plan to the Malaysian government.

7.30 can also reveal that a second private company, US-based Deep Sea Vision, will send its proposal for a search operation to the Malaysian government by mid-year.

The company recently made headlines when its deep-sea exploration team claimed to have captured a sonar image of Amelia Earhart's private plane , which went missing in the central Pacific Ocean 87 years ago.

"Unlike the Amelia Earhart search, the search for MH370 is more complex as it's in extremely rough terrain," said Deep Sea Vision CEO Tony Romeo.

Mr Romeo told 7.30 he expects his company's proposal to be carried out on a no-find, no-fee basis, and that a new search operation could take around 30 days to complete.

Both Deep Sea Vision and Ocean Infinity are partly relying on new analysis by pilot Patrick Blelly and air traffic management researcher Jean-Luc Marchand.

That analysis will take them to a new search zone.

Mr Marchand says a search of that zone could be completed in a week, while an expanded zone could be searched within 12-15 days.

"It could be a quick win to a certain extent, because it's not a big area," he said.

Attempts to solve the mystery

After three decades in the aviation industry, Mr Marchand partnered with Captain Blelly in an attempt to unlock the most complex mystery in aviation history.

"As much as you analyse, you discover more. And even today, we've got new information," Mr Marchand said.

There were 239 passengers and crew on board the   doomed flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

The captain, Zaharie Ahmad Shah, had spent more than three decades flying for Malaysia's national carrier.

An hour into the flight, MH370's transponder was turned off and after two hours the plane disappeared from radar screens.

Satellite data later established that MH370 flew for another six hours until it ran out of fuel over the southern Indian Ocean.

In May 2015, the first piece of debris washed up on Reunion Island.

Seven more pieces of debris, suspected to be from the aircraft, have since been found.

Was the original search flawed?

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB), which led an underwater search for MH370, took the view that the most likely scenario was that the pilot eventually lost control of the aircraft, causing a rapid descent before crashing into the ocean.

But a growing number of experts, including Captain Blelly and Mr Marchand, disagree.

Their analysis indicates the plane was most likely under control and may have glided into the ocean, taking it outside the original search zone.

Mr Marchand says this could explain why previous search efforts failed.

"The ATSB has taken a route. And now, we are demonstrating that actually, it is not the most likely [route]," he said.

"The most likely [scenario] is that somebody on board had the full control of the aircraft."

Marchand and Blelly's analysis differs significantly to the one the ATSB relied upon to determine its 2014 search parameters.

Chief commissioner of the ATSB, Angus Mitchell, told 7.30 several theories were thoroughly analysed before a search zone was set.

He says the theory that the plane glided into the southern Indian Ocean was also examined, but this scenario was determined to be unlikely.

"It was one of the most complex searches in history, and it covered such a range of possibilities that had to be considered when trying to narrow down that area," Mr Mitchell said.

ATSB defends their search

A former senior member of the search team has criticised the ATSB, saying some people within the agency "shot down" warnings that they may have been searching in the wrong place.

A hydrographer and former naval officer, Peter Waring joined the search team in 2014, two months after it began.

"Everyone was very hopeful, really confident, that they'd find the aircraft … and that it was only a matter of time until the seabed gave up its secrets," Mr Waring told 7.30.

An expert in surveying and mapping sea floors, Mr Waring was brought in to report progress to decision-makers in Canberra.

However, a year into his secondment with the ATSB, Mr Waring says he and others began questioning the theory that the plane spiralled out of control and crashed, after it ran out of fuel.

"The search team started to think [that] perhaps the end of flight scenario that we were working with was incorrect," he said.

"But when that conversation reached certain levels of the ATSB, it was shut down by various individuals.

A Malaysian Airlines Boeing 777 plane takes off from Kuala Lumpur airport.

"It became clear to me that we were looking probably in the wrong place.

"I had no confidence whatsoever that the aircraft would be found."

Mr Waring says he became so frustrated that he eventually asked to leave the search team.

"Did we spend too long looking in a place where we increasingly knew the aircraft wasn't? The answer to that is absolutely, yes."

Nine years on, Mr Waring still believes the original search could have had a different outcome.

"If a Cessna runs off a runway somewhere in Port Lincoln, the ATSB go and do that, but they're not the sort of organisation that should be running a search of this scale," he said.

"It just simply was the wrong agency."

ATSB chief commissioner Angus Mitchell rejected this criticism.

He says the organisation is a world-renowned agency when it comes to transport investigations and is recognised as such.

He told 7.30 that during the two-and-a-half-year search, the ATSB team consulted widely with other air crash investigation experts worldwide.

Man wearing an ATSB uniform sitting in an office with his arms folded.

"Any criticism of the ATSB's professionalism has no basis", Mr Mitchell said.

"It's an easy target to throw rocks at, particularly as we failed to find the aircraft.

"That comes at a great professional and personal cost to those involved at the time, many of whom are still working in my agency now."

Mr Mitchell stands by the original assessment that the plane was out of control when it crashed into the ocean, but definitive answers cannot be given until the wreckage is found.

"While we think of a Boeing 777 as a large aircraft, when you put it in comparison to the ocean, it's not at all," he said.

"Our search zone is something like twice the size of Tasmania.

"The ATSB is an evidence-based organisation. We assess the evidence at hand, that evidence led us to where the search area was, and that evidence is still valid today."

Families still want answers

Several of the families of passengers and crew that went missing 10 years ago have started a campaign to resume the search for the missing wreckage.

During a recent Kuala Lumpur-based memorial for the victims, the Malaysian Minister for Transport, Anthony Loke, extended an invitation to Ocean Infinity to discuss their proposal for a new search .

"I will meet them anytime that they are ready to come to Malaysia," he told a cheering crowd.

"I will do everything possible to get the cabinet's approval to sign a new contract with Ocean Infinity for the search to resume as soon as possible."
