Top Experiences Itinerary Highlights

Going backstage at tokyo’s fish market.

Plunging into the hustle and bustle of the world’s largest fish market makes you appreciate just how important seafood is in Japan...

Susukinohara Ichinoyu, a hot-spring hideaway in Hakone

If you want a relaxing introduction to Japanese bathing culture in a beautiful setting, Susukinohara Ichinoyu is the place to come...

Kurayado Iroha: the inn with a World Heritage view

My favourite aspect of our ryokan, Kurayado Iroha, is the view of the great torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine...

Day by day Itinerary in detail

Arrive in tokyo.

On your arrival in Tokyo, you’ll be met at the airport for a shared transfer to your hotel. The rest of the day will be at leisure. Overnight at Park Hotel Tokyo.

Things to do:

Gajóen tokyo: the hotel that thinks it’s a gallery, how to spend a day in tokyo - shrines, shoguns and the shibuya scramble, hotel niwa: the secret tokyo garden retreat.

Discover Tokyo’s residential districts on a guided walking tour with someone who lives there. First up is Asakusa, where you’ll soak up the atmosphere of Tokyo’s old town. Then visit the city’s oldest temple at Sensoji and wander down the ancient shopping street of Nakamise. Next, board Tokyo's Water Bus for a ride down Sumidagawa River to Hamarikyu, an Edo Period Japanese garden surrounded by the Shiodome district’s futuristic skyscrapers. Here you’ll stop for a cup of steaming matcha and Japanese sweets in a tea house on a small island in the park’s lake. After lunch visit Meiji Shrine, dedicated to the deified spirit of Emperor Meiji and a popular place for traditional Japanese weddings. Finally, as the sunlight dims, take a walk down the sparkly Omotesando shopping street, a broad tree lined avenue home to flagship fashion stores and fantastic modern architecture. Overnight at Park Hotel Tokyo.

The lost art of sugar sculpting

Get privileged behind-the-scenes access to Tokyo’s famous wholesale fish market, the largest in the world. Since it moved to new premises in 2018 most visitors have had to stay behind glass viewing screens, but you’ll get into the thick of the action with your guide, who’s also a licence holder. From there, you’ll head to the old Tsukiji market to learn more about preparing fish before travelling to a sushi restaurant to make your own fresher-than-fresh nigiri and – best of all – eat them for lunch. Use the rest of the day how you choose; one particularly fun option is to spend the evening in the lively Shinjuku nightlife district learning about Tokyo’s drinks culture with an insider. Overnight at Park Hotel Tokyo.

Tokyo & Hakone

Today you’ll use your Japan Rail Pass to take the bullet train from Tokyo to Hakone, which takes two hours. Hakone is known for mountains, lakes and hot springs, and on clear days there are superb views of Mount Fuji as well. Explore at your own pace armed with a Hakone Free Pass that covers the area’s varied transport network – from cable cars to pirate ships – before checking in to a traditional inn where you can enjoy a restorative soak in a thermal bath and an authentic Japanese evening meal. Overnight at Susukinohara Ichinoyu.

Hakone & Takayama

Using your transport passes, you’ll travel by bullet train and the Limited Express Hida Wideview, which winds its way through spectacular alpine scenery, to Takayama. This atmospheric mountain town is known for its well-preserved old quarter, which has barely changed in three centuries. You have the afternoon free to just wander around it, stopping off in small museums or family-run inns, or you could visit one of Takayama’s celebrated sake breweries to learn about how the national drink is made. For a special experience, add to the back-in-time feeling by upgrading your accommodation to a traditional Japanese ryokan complete with a hot-spring bath. Overnight at Hidatei Hanaougi.

Oyado Koto no Yume: a traditional ryokan in Takayama

Explore Takayama at your own pace today, but be sure to start with a visit to the Miyagawa morning market, which sells local crafts and produce that you won’t see anywhere else. This is the perfect place to try some of the region’s delicious street-food specialities such as mitarashi dango – skewers of rice balls basted in soy sauce. Just a short bus ride away is Hida No Sato Folk Village, an open-air museum showcasing traditional buildings from the Hida region. At the village workshop, there’s a fascinating exhibit about heritage handicrafts including wood carving, tie-dying, weaving and lacquering. Overnight at Hidatei Hanaougi.

Experiencing the gentler pace of mountain life in Takayama

Takayama, shirakawa-go & kanazawa.

Using your included coach tickets, you will travel to World Heritage-listed Shirakawa-go, famous for its traditional farmhouses, some of which are more than 250 years old. They have distinctive steep thatched roofs that are said to look like the hands of praying monks, and which are designed to withstand the heavy snows that fall in the region. From here, you’ll continue by coach to Kanazawa, known affectionately as ‘Little Kyoto’ thanks to its immaculately preserved historical samurai and entertainment districts. Overnight at ANA Crowne Plaza, Kanazawa.

Escape to a remote alpine village

Tokyu hotel: the modern face of kanazawa hospitality.

Spend the day exploring Kanazawa at your own pace. There’s plenty to take in, including one of Japan’s most famous gardens, Kenrokuen, where you could linger for hours discovering hidden corners, stunning viewpoints, a tranquil teahouse and more. Not surprisingly, it’s particularly popular when the cherry and plum blossom is at its peak. There are also three entertainment districts filled with teahouses, cafés and tiny traditional stores that are made for leisurely browsing, not to mention a castle, several museums and a shrine with unusual Dutch-influenced architecture and a restful garden. For lunch, join the locals at lively Omicho market for a bowl of super-fresh seafood and rice. Overnight at ANA Crowne Plaza, Kanazawa.

Kanazawa & Hiroshima

Today you’ll travel by train to Hiroshima, a journey of four hours with one change. You’ll have the rest of the day to relax in this pleasant coastal city, ready to learn more about its tragic history as the first city to be hit by an atomic bomb – which completely obliterated almost everything and everyone within a mile of the impact – on a guided tour tomorrow. Overnight at Hotel Granvia Hiroshima.

Hiroshima & Miyajima

Today you will take a day tour of Hiroshima with a local guide, starting at the Peace Memorial Park, located in what was one of Hiroshima’s busiest central districts before 6 August 1945. The park is dedicated to those who lost their lives to the atomic bomb, and contains memorials – including the iconic Atomic Bomb Dome – statues and an affecting museum. From Hiroshima, it’s a short ferry ride to Miyajima, otherwise known as the ‘Island of the Gods’. It’s been a holy place for centuries and is home to an array of beautiful temples and shrines; the atmosphere is particularly soothing in the evening, so it’s well worth considering spending the night here in one of the island’s ryokans. Overnight at Hotel Granvia Hiroshima.

Hiroshima & Kyoto

Today you’ll head to Kyoto on the bullet train, a two-hour journey from Hiroshima, arriving in time for an afternoon private cookery lesson about Kyoto’s typical kappo cuisine that will give you a fascinating insight into Japanese dining culture. ‘Kappo’ means ‘to cut ingredients with a knife and cook them over a fire’, though nowadays baked, fried and even raw dishes are included. What defines a kappo restaurant is that the food is served over a counter where you sit face to face with the chef, which adds a whole new level of entertainment to any meal. Overnight at Hotel Granvia Kyoto.

Gion Yoshi-Ima: a Kyoto hideaway with a sense of history

Noku kyoto: contemporary living at the heart of japan's ancient capital.

The former imperial capital has such a wealth of impressive sites that it helps to have a local guide to steer you toward the highlights. One of those is the world-famous Fushimi Inari shrine, a visually stunning experience where thousands of bright red torii gates line a mountain trail to the shrine. Next stop is Kiyomizu-dera temple, a celebrated UNESCO site that is older than Kyoto itself. It is famous for its massive platform stage, the Kiyomizu Butai, constructed entirely from wood and joints without the use of nails. In the afternoon you’ll visit Kinkaku-ji temple, covered in real gold leaf and set into the northern hills this photogenic jewel is one of the most visited sites in Japan. Last stop is the remarkable Kitano-Temanngu shrine, built to appease the spirit of an angry ghost. After a fire in 1444, a large section of the temple was rebuilt and the remaining timber was used to construct 7 tea houses that became Kyoto’s first Geisha district - Kamishichiken. It’s a full day, so if you want to treat yourself it’s worth doing the trip by private car rather than public transport. Overnight at Hotel Granvia Kyoto.

Getting an insider view of old Kyoto

The not-so-simple cup of tea, learning the secrets of growing tea, the pretty-as-a-picture fishing village, kyoto & nara.

Your guide will meet you at your hotel for the 45-minute train journey to Nara, Japan’s first permanent capital in the eighth century. First, you’ll visit the beautiful Isuien Garden, then wander through Nara Park to see the semi-tame Sika deer that live there. Within Nara Park is Todaiji temple, the world’s largest wooden building and home to Japan’s largest Buddha. Next stop is Nara’s most celebrated shrine, Kasuga Taisha, famous for its hundreds of bronze and stone lanterns. You’ll end the day with a stroll around Naramachi, a charming historic merchant district showcasing well-preserved ‘Machiya’ Japanese town houses. Overnight at Hotel Granvia Kyoto.

Wild deer, colourful temples and the world's biggest bronze Buddha: Nara Park, Kyoto

Kyoto & departure.

Enjoy a final few hours at leisure in Kyoto before your train to Narita International Airport (four hours) in time for your return flight.

Japan Reisen

Amazing tour. Kayoko was awesome and we got to see so much of Japan. Only wish there was a change on the 10 person minimum for the optional tours. We had a smaller group so getting 10 people for things sometimes was tough.

Japan Express: Osaka to Tokyo

We had a wonderful trip and LOVED the other travelers in our group! (We are just amazed and relieved that we managed to avoid the big typhoon that came through just two days after we left...). Our leader Fuji was great. We had difficulty understanding his accent--especially at first--but we grew to really appreciate his quirky sense of humor and amazing navigation skills! Aside from the language difficulty, our only critique of him was that he readily admitted he did not know very much about some of the temples and shrines that we visited, so we did not gain as deep of an understanding as we might have with a different guide. There were times when the itinerary felt a bit rushed, but we are so glad to have had so many amazing adventures along the way, and in hindsight I wouldn't have skipped anything. We were also in Hiroshima on the anniversary of the bombing, which made the visit a bit more crowded, but also more meaningful. I will highly recommend this trip to all of my friends!

Epic Japan: Speed Trains & Street Food

Tour was great in many respects - some of the accommodation, for example, was excellent, and the use of the bullet trains was a fab experience. As others have said, there was perhaps too much free time - at times, I felt unprepared. Having said this, our great guide, Akiko, would often help us work out what to do/where to visit.

Amazing tour would recommend to anyone. Our guides were amazing and nothing was too much for them, they were a great help to the tour when arranging onward travel. The activities included were fantastic loved all of them. Don't think about doing it, just do it you won't regret it.

Japan Express Tour

Japan Express

It was a really great experience! Having both guided tours and lots of free time made for a nicely balanced tour where our guide, Toshimi, a very knowledgeable local, would show us parts of Japan and tell us of their significance historically and socially, and also tell us how and where to appreciate Japan during our free time. Our guide loves Japan's history and it was very interesting talking to him about Japan. He also made lots of great recommendations on places to see and eat at, and overall made the whole tour experience very convenient, fun, and informative.

We had an amazing holiday. Japan was all we had hoped for. The group worked so well, we all got on and became good friends. Shingo, our guide was totally great. He was so pleasant and helpful. His English not brilliant but he did a great job. We felt maybe a little more information on places and sights might have been good. He was constantly helping us all and looking after us. He made great suggestions for meals and always checked up on us all, even when we split into smaller groups for the evening. He went way beyond what he could have done and made everyone feel safe and well looked after. He even helped booking all our onward travel and ensured we were all ok on the day. Wonderful man!! The hotels were nice, if a little small with almost no storage in most of them! Breakfasts were generally very good. We saw and did so much. In fact, we felt sometimes it was a little too much to fit into each day, and either missed some things out or were too rushed, missing stopping and looking at leisure at things and shops etc. Shingo was so patient, even when we caused him to run a little late! Due to distances covered we spent a lot of time travelling which was an interesting experience. Just meant time at destinations was a little short. As Most of us were older we all felt very tired at the end of each day and struggled especially when we had to carry back packs whilst waiting to be reunited with luggage. Dont know what the answer is, if extra days added, then expense goes up. If itinerary cut back, then Interesting sights missed out! Overall, a truly great trip. We enjoyed it all!

Tour overview.

This tour is a fantastic introduction to Japan as it visits the must-see attractions and includes plenty of traditional experiences. You'll get to ride the iconic bullet train and experience travelling like a local with a pre-loaded Japan Rail Pass to use throughout your journey. And there will be a number of opportunities for you to experience local restaurants independently.

Day 1: UK to Tokyo Depart from the UK on your overnight flight to Tokyo.

Day 2: Tokyo On arrival in the capital you'll be met and then transferred to your hotel by airport shuttle bus. You'll be given an IC card (similar to an Oyster card) which enables you to travel locally by bus, rail and subway. The card will be pre-loaded and can be topped up if you want to explore independently during your free time. You will also receive a 14-day Japan Rail Pass which offers the most efficient way of travelling throughout the country. Stay: Grand Prince Hotel New Takanawa, or similar. Day 3: Tokyo Begin your exploration of this ultra-modern city with a guided tour that makes good use of Tokyo's efficient and fast public transport. Visit the Meiji Shrine which has a serene forested setting by Yoyogi Park, right in the heart of the city. Follow a pretty tree-lined walkway, listen to the chirping of the cicadas and pass through the giant torii (a traditional gate) to the shrine which is dedicated to the first emperor of modern Japan. It's a popular spot for weddings so you may see a traditional Shinto wedding procession.

Take a stroll down Omotesando, a popular shopping street that's known as 'Tokyo's Champs-Elysees' and is home to the world's top fashion brands. After a welcome lunch, continue to the historic Asakusa district which served as Tokyo's leading entertainment district during the Edo Period and offers a glimpse into old Tokyo. Soak up the atmosphere in the surrounding streets and wander along Nakamise – which is lined with market stalls, souvenir shops and food stalls – to visit Sensoji, Tokyo's oldest temple. Stay: Grand Prince Hotel New Takanawa, or similar. B, L. Day 4: Tokyo Travel southwest by public transport (approx. 1 hour) to the sleepy coastal town of Kamakura which was Japan's political centre during the Kamakura Period (12th-14th centuries). This charming town is referred to as 'the Kyoto of Eastern Japan' because of its many temples and shrines which are scattered in forested hills. Visit the Kotokuin Temple which is home to the 13-metre-high Great Buddha (Daibutsu), and Tsurugaoka Hachimangu – Kamakura's most important shrine, which is set in beautiful gardens dotted with lotus ponds. The visa requirements for traveling to Japan vary depending on your nationality and the purpose and duration of your visit. The duration of visa-free stays can range from 90 days to 6 months, depending on the country.

Can I remain in my swimwear in an Onsen?

If you're not sure about the idea of being naked in an onsen, there are alternatives available!. Some places offer private or mixed-gender onsens where bathing suits or towels can be worn. Additionally, modern resorts and ryokans (traditional Japanese inns) sometimes have onsen facilities that allow swimwear, catering to the needs and preferences of international visitors.

It is a cultural norm in Japan for most traditional onsens to be enjoyed in the nude in single gender areas. While it may initially feel unfamiliar to some visitors from different cultural backgrounds, bathing in onsens without clothing is a longstanding tradition rooted in Japanese culture. It is considered a way to fully immerse oneself in the therapeutic waters and promote cleanliness.

The nudity in onsens is seen as a way to embrace equality and remove barriers between individuals. Men and women usually have separate bathing areas, ensuring privacy and comfort. It's important to note that this practice is not meant to be sexual in nature but rather focuses on relaxation, rejuvenation, and the enjoyment of natural hot spring waters.

It's always a good idea to check the rules and customs of the specific onsen you plan to visit in order to respect the traditions and ensure a comfortable experience

What is the currency in Japan and can I access my money?

The currency in Japan is the Japanese Yen (JPY). When traveling to Japan, it is important to have access to money in the local currency for your expenses. Here are some key points regarding accessing and using money in Japan:

Currency Exchange: It is advisable to exchange your currency to Japanese Yen before or upon arrival in Japan. Currency exchange services can be found at major airports, banks, and authorized exchange offices. It's recommended to compare exchange rates and fees to ensure you get the best value.

ATMs: ATMs are widely available in Japan, particularly in cities and towns. Look for ATMs at post offices, convenience stores (such as 7-Eleven, FamilyMart, and Lawson), and banks. These ATMs generally accept international debit and credit cards with a Visa, Mastercard, or other major card network logo. Make sure to inform your bank about your travel plans and check if there are any withdrawal limits or fees associated with international transactions.

Cash-Based Society: While major establishments such as hotels, large department stores, and some restaurants may accept credit cards, it's important to note that Japan is still largely a cash-based society. Smaller shops, local eateries, traditional markets, and public transportation often accept cash only. It's advisable to carry some cash with you at all times, especially when visiting rural areas or more traditional establishments.

Prepaid Cards: Consider obtaining a prepaid travel card, such as the "Suica" or "Pasmo" card, which can be used for transportation fares, purchases at convenience stores, and vending machines. These cards can be charged with funds at designated machines or ticket counters and offer convenience and time-saving benefits.

Traveler's Checks: While traveler's checks were once commonly used, they have become less prevalent in Japan. It may be more difficult to find establishments that accept traveler's checks, so it is advisable to rely on cash or cards for your transactions.

Mobile Payments: Mobile payment services such as Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay are becoming more widely accepted in Japan. If your mobile device and payment provider are compatible, you may be able to use your smartphone for transactions at supported locations.

Remember to notify your bank or credit card company of your travel plans to avoid any potential issues with accessing your money while in Japan. It's also recommended to keep a combination of cash and cards for flexibility and to have sufficient funds for your anticipated expenses.

Overall, accessing money in Japan is relatively straightforward, with ATMs being widely available and accepted cards being commonly used in larger establishments. However, it's always a good idea to have some cash on hand for smaller or cash-only businesses and to be prepared for potential situations where cards may not be accepted.

Is Japan a safe destination?

Yes, Japan is generally considered a safe destination for travelers. The country has a reputation for its low crime rate, well-maintained infrastructure, and efficient public transportation systems. Here are some key points regarding safety in Japan:

Low Crime Rate: Japan is known for its safety and low crime rates compared to many other countries. Violent crimes and theft are relatively rare, and travelers can generally feel secure when exploring cities, towns, and rural areas. However, it's still important to exercise basic caution and take common-sense precautions to safeguard your belongings and personal safety.

Polite and Law-Abiding Society: Japanese society places a strong emphasis on respect, politeness, and adherence to rules and laws. This contributes to a generally orderly and safe environment for both locals and visitors. It's important to familiarize yourself with local customs and cultural norms to show respect and avoid inadvertently causing offense.

Efficient Public Transportation: Japan's public transportation system, including trains, subways, and buses, is known for its efficiency, reliability, and safety. Stations and trains are well-maintained, and security measures are in place to ensure passenger safety. However, it's advisable to remain vigilant of your belongings and follow any guidelines or instructions provided by transportation authorities.

Natural Disasters: Japan is located in a region prone to natural disasters such as earthquakes, typhoons, and tsunamis. The country has developed robust infrastructure and emergency response systems to mitigate the impact of these events. It's recommended to stay informed about weather conditions, follow any instructions from local authorities, and familiarize yourself with evacuation procedures if you are traveling during a season when natural disasters are more likely.

Health and Hygiene: Japan maintains high standards of cleanliness and hygiene. Tap water is generally safe to drink throughout the country, and food hygiene standards are strictly enforced. However, it's always advisable to take normal precautions, such as practicing good hand hygiene and being mindful of food safety practices.

While Japan is generally safe, it's important for travelers to exercise basic safety measures, such as keeping an eye on personal belongings, being aware of your surroundings, and taking appropriate precautions to protect your valuables. Additionally, having travel insurance that covers medical expenses, trip cancellations, and other unforeseen circumstances is recommended.

By staying informed, respecting local customs, and being mindful of your personal safety, you can enjoy a safe and memorable journey in Japan.

The emergency numbers are 119 (fire and ambulance) and 110 for police.

Will I need any vaccinations to travel to Japan?

As of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021, there are no specific vaccination requirements for travelers entering Japan. Generally, Japan does not require any specific vaccinations for entry unless you are traveling from or have recently visited a country with a known epidemic or health risk.

However, it's important to note that health recommendations and requirements can change over time, and it's always best to stay updated on the latest information. Therefore, it is recommended to consult with a healthcare professional or travel health clinic in your country well in advance of your trip to Japan to receive personalized advice based on your medical history, current health status, and any specific health concerns you may have.

Additionally, it's advisable to ensure that routine vaccinations, such as measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (DTP), varicella (chickenpox), and influenza, are up to date before traveling to any destination, including Japan. These vaccinations help protect against common diseases and ensure your overall health and well-being.

It's also a good idea to review general health and safety precautions for travel, such as practicing good hand hygiene, staying hydrated, and taking necessary measures to prevent insect bites if you plan to visit rural or forested areas.

By consulting with a healthcare professional or travel health clinic, you can receive the most accurate and up-to-date information regarding vaccinations and health recommendations for your specific travel plans to Japan.

However, the general blooming period for cherry blossoms in Japan is as follows:

  • Southern Japan (Okinawa): Late January to early February
  • Kyoto, Tokyo, and central regions: Late March to early April
  • Hokkaido and northern regions: Late April to early May

It's important to note that these are approximate timeframes, and the exact blooming dates can vary from year to year. The Japan Meteorological Corporation and other organizations usually release cherry blossom forecasts each year to provide an estimated schedule based on historical data and weather patterns.

To maximize your chances of witnessing the cherry blossoms in full bloom, it's recommended to plan your trip during the typical blooming periods for the specific regions you intend to visit. Keep in mind that cherry blossom season is a popular time for tourism in Japan, and popular spots can become crowded, so it's advisable to book accommodations and transportation in advance.

Additionally, it's worth noting that cherry blossoms bloom at different times throughout the country, with southern regions seeing earlier blooms and northern regions seeing later blooms. This means that if you are traveling across multiple regions in Japan, you can potentially extend your cherry blossom viewing period by following the blooms as you move northward.

Remember to check the latest cherry blossom forecasts closer to your travel dates for the most accurate information. Enjoying the ethereal beauty of cherry blossoms in Japan is a truly enchanting experience that attracts visitors from around the world.

Can I drink tap water in Japan?

Yes, tap water in Japan is generally safe to drink. The country has high-quality water infrastructure and strict regulations regarding water safety. The tap water is treated and tested regularly to ensure its quality meets or exceeds the standards set by the government.

In most cities and towns, tap water is safe to drink directly from the tap without any concerns. It is clean, clear, and often tastes good. You can fill your water bottle from taps in hotels, restaurants, and public facilities with confidence.

However, it's important to note that there might be regional variations in water quality and taste. In some areas, particularly rural or remote regions, the water may have a different mineral content or taste slightly different. In such cases, locals may prefer to drink bottled or filtered water. If you're unsure about the water quality in a specific area, it's always best to ask the locals or hotel staff for their recommendations.

If you prefer to have bottled water, it is widely available for purchase at convenience stores, supermarkets, and vending machines throughout Japan. You can also find water dispensers in public spaces where you can refill your bottle.

Overall, while tap water is generally safe to drink in Japan, it's always a good idea to exercise caution and consider personal preferences when it comes to drinking water.

August: O Bon (Festival of the Dead), when lanterns are floated on rivers, lakes or the sea to signify the return of the departed to the underworld. Currency: Yen (

The best time to travel in Japan is autumn (September to November). The temperature is pleasant, and the autumn colours in the countryside are fantastic. Mid-winter (December to February) can be bitterly cold. And June to August are the sticky summer months.

Mt.Kenya is the highest mountain in Kenya and the second-highest in Africa, after Kilimanjaro. It’s located in central Kenya. Mount Kenya is the source of the name of the Republic of Kenya.

Lake Nakuru

Lake Nakuru is one of the Rift Valley soda lakes at an elevation of 1754 m above sea level. It lies to the south of Nakuru, in the rift valley of Kenya. The lake’s abundance of algae attracts the vast quantity of flamingos that famously line the shore. Other birds also flourish in the area, as do warthogs, baboons and other large mammals. Black and white rhinos have also been introduced. Nakuru means Dust or Dusty Place in the Maasai language. The lake is world famous as the location of the greatest bird spectacle on earth – myriads of fuchsia pink flamingos whose numbers are legion, often more than a million – or even two million. They feed on the abundant algae, which thrives in the warm waters. Scientists reckon that the flamingo population at Nakuru consumes about 250,000 kg of algae per hectare of surface area per year.

Masai Mara National Reserve The Mara (as the old hands like to call it) is the most popular wildlife park in Kenya. Abounding with wildlife and joined to the Serengeti, this 320-sq-km reserve is anything but plain. Few visitors miss roaming at least part of its vast open savanna grasslands – or leaping out of the way of the annual wildebeest stampede. The western border of the park is the spectacular Esoit Olooloo (Siria) Escarpment and it’s at the edge of the park that the concentrations of wildlife are the highest. Lions are found in large prides everywhere and it’s not unusual to see them hunting. Elephants, buffaloes, zebras, various antelopes and hippos also exist in large numbers.

Kenya’s capital is cosmopolitan, lively, interesting, pleasantly landscaped and a good place to get essential business matters sewn up. You can walk from one end of the central business district to the other in 20 minutes and it’s a great place to tune into modern urban African life. Unfortunately, it’s also a great place to get mugged. Nairobi sprang up with the building of the Mombasa to Uganda railway. Originally little more than a swampy watering hole for Maasai tribes, it had became a substantial town by 1900. Five years later it succeeded Mombasa as the capital of the British protectorate. Today it’s the largest city between Cairo and Johannesburg with a population of 2.5 million and a rapid growth rate. Like most cities, Nairobi has its crowded market, trading and transport areas, its middle class/office workers’ suburbs and its spacious mansions and flower-decked gardens for the rich and powerful. For sightseeing, the National Museum, Snake Museum and National Archives are all interesting and easy to get to. Nairobi is a city of contrasts – you will find smart office workers and mansions and expensive suburban shopping centers as well as overcrowded slums and a lot of people trying to struggle on as best they can. Crime in River Rd and some other areas of Nairobi is a major problem (travelers have come to call the place ‘Nairoberry’). For all that, Nairobi is also a place to find things that you can’t buy in most other parts of Africa. It has the latest films on big screens, a variety of excellent restaurants and a number of cafes and bars full of travelers from all over the world swapping safari stories. Population: 2.5 million Country: Kenya Time: GMT/UTC +3 hours Telephone Area Code: 02

The Nairobi agricultural show is held in the first week of October and is attended by local tribal people. Apart from this, there are celebrations during national holidays that include Madaraka Day (1 June), which celebrates self-government, Kenyatta Day (20 October) and Independence Day (12 December).

Orientation:

The compact city center is bounded by Uhuru Hwy, Haile Selassie Ave, Tom Mboya St and University Way. The main bus and train stations are within a few minutes walk of this area. The main budget accommodation area is centered on Latema Rd, just east of Tom Mboya St. The National Museum is to the north of the central area, while Westlands, a major shopping center, is further north.

When to go:

The best times to visit are during January and February and between June and October, when the weather is drier in and around Nairobi. Because Nairobi is located at the edge of the highlands, temperatures are cooler here compared with much of the rest of the country.

Beaten Track:

Karen Blixen Museum This is the beautiful farmhouse where Karen Blixen, author of Out of Africa, lived between 1914 and 1931, until she left Kenya after a series of personal tragedies. Nearby are the Ngong Hills, where many white settlers set up farms and built their houses. Passing by this area, you can be excused for imagining you are in the Home Counties of England, which along with the cooler temperatures goes a long way to explain why the Europeans settled here in such numbers. Though the hills offer some excellent walks, you should only do one with an organized tour or an armed escort, due to the risk of being mugged. Limuru Limuru has a distinctly European feel. Kentmere Club is the quintessential white-settlers’ club and is well worth a visit. Kiambethu Tea Farm offers tours of its tea estate at nearby Tigoni. Limuru is northwest of Nairobi. The bus ride takes about half an hour, followed by a ten-minute walk. Nairobi is an excellent place to go on a safari or a trek up Mt Kenya. Gaining popularity is white-water rafting on the Athi/Galana River. Otherwise, why have you gone all the way to Kenya?hell are you doing in Nairobi?

Until the 19th century, you could find only the Maasai people in Nairobi. Then came the building of the Mombasa to Uganda railway, and the place became a convenient and relatively cool place for the Indian railway laborers and their British overlords. Nairobi quickly became a tent city and a supply depot. By 1900 it was a town with substantial buildings; five years later and it replaced Mombasa as the capital of the British East Africa Protectorate. White settlers soon began to move into the fertile highlands north and then south of Nairobi. This led to friction with the local Maasai and, later, the Kikuyu. Mixed agricultural farms were set up, with coffee plantations established at about the same time by new arrivals that included Karen Blixen and her husband, Brer. The number of white settlers rose to 9000 by 1920 and, by the 1950s, it was 80,000. Alienated from their land, many Kikuyu people migrated to Nairobi during the same period, became part of the colonial economy, and formed associations whose principal aim was the return of land to the Kikuyu. One such person was Johnstone Kamau, who later changed his name to Jomo Kenyatta. Up until after WW II, Kenya’s white rulers were in no mood for accommodating the demands of the Africans. However, African troops returning from the war were equally in no mood to accept the status quo and the bloody Mau Mau Rebellion, which mainly involved the Kikuyu, raged until 1956. Soon afterwards, Kenyatta was jailed and later placed under house arrest until 1961, although there was no evidence to link him with the rebellion. Pressure continued to build on the British and, on 12 December 1963, Kenya gained independence, with Kenyatta as its first president. Throughout the 20th century, Nairobi continued to grow. Today, it is now the largest city between Cairo and Johannesburg.

Getting There:

Fying is the most convenient way to get to Nairobi. It is a major African hub, so flights between the city and the rest of Africa and many other destinations in Europe are frequent and relatively cheap. Coming overland, Nairobi is easily reached by bus and minibus from various destinations in Tanzania and Kampala in Uganda. To arrive from Ethiopia, you will have to get on a truck (which will be part of an escorted convoy) from the border at Moyale and swap to a bus at Isiolo. Within Kenya, Nairobi can be reached from Mombasa by either train or bus, while long-distance buses and minibuses run to numerous destinations.

Getting Around:

There’s a cheap bus to/from the international airport, but many travelers report being ripped off on it. Buses are a cheap way of getting around Nairobi, but they can be very crowded during peak hour and are a pickpocket’s paradise. Matatus (minibuses) are much the same, although they tend to be more frequent and their drivers often crazier. Taxis are not metered and expensive, but vital for night travel for safety reasons.

Hiking routes exist in many of Japan’s national parks. To experience a Japan that few foreigners see, head for the mountainous, less populated Central Alps. Skiing is possible here from December to April. The Okinawan islands in the far south-west of Japan are popular diving destinations. Cycling is most popular in the less hilly coastal regions.

Japan Tourist Visa Requirements Documents Required – Visa Application form duly filled and singed as per passport. (Note – If thumb impression is there on the passport of child then on visa form along with thumb impression signature of both parents is required) Valid passport with minimum 6 months validity from date of exit from Japan after the tour.

As we lost some lunches and activities due to weather disrupts, after long and humiliating haggling, we were given welcome replacement lunch on last day of our tour (at the expense of sightseeing at castle Nijo in Kyoto , time for which was drastically shortened).

As for Kamakura and Pirate Ship Cruise on Lake Ashi, no alternative activities were provided and no reimbursement offered (the funds must have been allocated for this Kuoni, which were not spent by them and which we have paid for within our holiday package price).

We were supposed to have “Welcome Lunch”. Kuoni’s idea of welcome lunch was to hand each one of us in the group ¥ 2000.00 in cash while we were in Tokyo city center and to tell us to go and find ourselves some place to eat on our own. That was done in the time when we were supposed to see Harajuku district, effectively taking away all the time allocated for this.

Whole travelling by trains and busses was arranged in a way that it happened during the best sightseeing hours, which resulted in coming to all objects and places 1-2 hours before they were closed and then rushing through them.

The guide was unable or unwilling to provide any cultural or historic information about the places we were visiting. We had to persuade her to provide even basic information.

Lunch was too early in general, i.e. 11am or 11:30am, which is unusual, this was mostly because the guide was always rushing through the daily agenda to leave us with “free afternoon” with nothing to do or see.

Opur quide was quite inept in regards of taking care of people she was responsible for. There were no procedures in place for embarking and disembarking while using public transport. We never knew when to disembark and where to gather afterwards and where we were going next and what our final station was.

This reckless approach reached culmination in Kyoto, where one member of our group fallen asleep in the train and was not informed by our guide that we were supposed to disembark on next station.

On our last day, we were supposed to see Nijo Castle in Kyoto. According to information displayed at the castle, recommended sightseeing tour should take 2 hours. Our guide decided that 45 minutes was more than enough and this was further shortened as we had replacement lunch.

Summing up:

What was supposed to be dream holidays with Kuoni, turned out to be a nightmare 10 days with inept Kuoni and their unprofessional guide.
