Adventure Cruises in Greece

Warm weather, deep blue waters and the beauty of the Greek islands are at arm's reach in adventure cruises. An unforgettable experience.

Littered with tiny and beautiful islands, Greece small ship cruises offer you the opportunity to explore everything the Greek archipelagos have to offer from the comfort of a small ship cruise boat. Visiting the very best of Greece's glittering white sand beaches on one island then away to the lively nightlife hotspots on another is the best way to visit this beautiful part of the world in style. Greece caters to a variety of tastes and interests from fine dining and endless historical and cultural sites to shimmering blue waters, white beaches, and bustling nightlife.

Many adventure cruises around Greece begin in Athens, the capital, and an impressive cultural hub. Cruises then take in the Cyclades Islands, Ionian archipelago as well as the beautiful Dodecanese archipelago home to the iconic island of Rhodes. These island chains are each unique in culture, architecture, and cuisine, all enjoy the azure waters, sandy beaches, and laid-back atmosphere that is the postcard image of Greece. Whether you are hoping to see the wonders of Greek history, bronze yourself on the beach, or party until the morning visitors will find a host of wonders on a small ship cruise around Greece.

Best Greek cruises and areas to visit

Cyclades islands.

Home to some of Greece's most famous islands the Cyclades has always been a hotspot for discerning travellers. The all-night parties of Mykonos to romantic sunsets over the Caldera of Santorini the Cyclades has a reputation as a magical place. The larger islands are home to rows of beautiful tavernas, panoramic restaurants and wine cellars for fine dining aficionados. Sun worshippers will find a beach for every taste in a place where a cloud is so rare it seems almost a curiosity. A small ship cruise gives you the chance to make the most of hundreds of stunning swimming spots in the Cyclades with beautiful blue holes, caves and hidden beaches.

Ionian Islands

Rich in history and blessed with a dramatic coastline the Ionian Islands are renowned for their natural beauty. The islands are geologically fascinating with huge white cliffs along the coast and white sandy beaches nestled in between them, hard to access from land but drop off a small ship cruise and explore some of the quietest and most beautiful spots. Paxos, in particular, has a huge number of tiny coves, inlets and beaches tucked away, the largest island Kefalonia has a number of caves including an underground lake with the surrounding forest. For those looking for nightlife and fine dining Corfu, the second largest island is heaven. The main town is bustling with people enjoying the tavernas, cocktail bars and local shops.

Dodecanese Islands

Home to the iconic and well-loved island of Rhodes, a small ship cruise in the Dodecanese Islands is not only the chance to explore some of the best beaches in Greece but a host of significant historical and archaeological sites including an acropolis and palace. Rhodes is also famed for its unique local delicacies especially its wide range of delicious desserts and cookies. Kos island is also a popular island for small ship cruises thanks to its vibrant nightlife and abundant beaches. Kos is a wonderful mix of experiences with beaches and bars often found just next to historical buildings and ancient villas.

Best time to cruise in Greece

The best time to visit Greece depends on which of its treasures you want to experience and how you like your sun. The summer is the high season running from June to September, this is the time when not only visitors from abroad flock to the islands but locals from the mainland too. This is a vibrant and lively time to visit the islands when a rich variety of people are living the high life on the Greek archipelagos, be prepared to share these islands with the rich and famous and share the waters with their superyachts too. It can be pretty hot during the summer perfect for heading to the beach and making gloriously cool swim stops along the coast. Visiting Greece in spring and winter is cooler and it's a great time for those looking to take in the sights and appreciate the history and architecture of Greece. It is worth noting that during the winter months there will be fewer local businesses open as many are closed during the low season.

How to get to Greece

Most small ship cruises around Greece depart from Athens which is the main international hub of Greece. Athens international airport provides flights from around the world with good connections by metro to Piraeus port where most small ship cruises depart from. There are some of the cruises that start on the archipelagos themselves which usually means either travelling from Athens by flight or ferry out to the island chains. Some of the larger islands such as Santorini, Mykonos, Rhodes and Zakynthos have their own international airports many of the smaller ones have domestic airports making it a short hop over from Athens or one of the larger islands.

Greece Cruise Tips

  • Small ship cruises of Greece are extremely popular thanks to the calm waters and rich experiences on offer. It is advisable to book early if you would like to visit in the summer as many boats are booked up months or more in advance.
  • For those who are travelling to the islands by ferry or domestic flight, it is worth noting that they are subject to delays, especially in the peak months. It is best to arrive a day or two before departure and enjoy a little more of Greece at the same time. The ferries and inter-island flights are also extremely busy and it is worth booking well in advance.
  • Check the itinerary for your small ship cruise, different cruises of Greece offer different activities. Sun worshippers should look out for beach tours and plenty of swim stops. Those looking to experience the history and culture of Greece will find some islands such as Rhodes and Kos to have the widest variety of sites.
  • Greece is extremely hot and sunny, good news, in the summer and still sunny in the cooler months making suncream and good coverage of hats and clothing a must. There are also some mosquitos, not so many on the islands themselves thankfully but it is worth bringing a repellent to avoid any bites.
  • The water in Greece is said to often look so clear your boat seems to be floating so it should come as no surprise that snorkelling is a big hit here. Beautiful geological formations, bubbling volcanic seabeds and shoals of fish make it worth bringing your own mask and fins if you enjoy snorkelling and swimming.
  • Greece is part of the E.U. and uses Euros as its currency, banks are easily found on the islands and cards are widely accepted. Tipping is widely accepted as customary for good service. It is interesting to note that due to local regulations your bill for food or drinks must always be left displayed on your table as proof that you have been legally charged.

Explore all the Greek archipelagos have to offer, take in the Cyclades Islands, the Ionian, and the beautiful Dodecanese archipelago. Whether you want to see the wonders of Greek history, tan on the beach, or party until the morning, you'll find a host of wonders in Greece.

I did not dive, but from what I saw from snorkeling, I'm not sorry I didn't. Incredible viz, with very little to see. Beautiful water for swimming, which is what we did, often from the boat like Elon Musk.

It was great. Best way to see Cyclades and flavor of the different islands.

The most interesting place to dive, neither diving or snorkeling was available: the caves in Milos.

We loved it except for the weather. It was a bit chilly in early May.

Cruising Greece in May on the Elysium

As expected. The Aegean Sea is beautiful and the islands, although some overly commercialized, were lovey. Overall, we enjoyed it immensely

  • 8.0 Very good

Excellent, especially since we visited places off the beaten path. Our cab driver from the airport asked about our itinerary and was surprised and impressed.

Really good. 8 days was perfect for us to get a good look around the Saronic Islands and have plenty of time for both activities and relaxation.

Cruising Greece in June on the Glaros

My husband thought his 2 diving islands - Milos and Paros - were amazing! He especially loved the cave dive on Paros.

6 of the best small ship cruises to the greek islands.

The Greek islands are amongst Europe's most appealing cruise destinations, home to dazzling white sugarcube villages, gorgeous beaches, enticing tavernas and the sun-baked ruins of ancient civilisations. Read on for our pick of the best small ship cruises to the Greek Islands.

A cruise is the perfect way to experience the best of Greece, allowing you to hop from island to island without worrying about ferry timetables and hotel reservations. Not all Greek island cruises are created equal, however.

Popular islands such as Santorini and Mykonos feature on the itineraries of all the main cruise lines, and although they undeniably have their charms, they can be overrun with day-trippers during the summer high season. A small ship cruise, on the other hand, allows you to visit the smaller, quieter islands that the big ships can't reach, places where you'll have idyllic beaches and stunning ruins almost to yourself.

mykonos-greek-island-small-ship-cruise

Most cruises focused on the Greek islands will be round-trip itineraries from Athens, but you'll also find voyages that combine Greece with Italy, Croatia and the Adriatic, using Venice or Rome as turnaround ports. Some cruises also include the Holy Land or pass through the islands on repositioning voyages towards the Middle East, while others include ports on the Aegean coast of Turkey, with some voyages beginning or ending in the wonderful city of Istanbul.

Oia village in Santorini, Greece

The season usually runs from May to October, with July and August the busiest (and hottest) time to visit. On a cruise visiting the smaller islands you'll almost always be tendered ashore, and each island has its own appeal, whether you're interested in history, cuisine, beaches, nature or all of the above. Our clients are often surprised to discover that the number of Greek island cruises on offer each summer is quite limited, so it pays to book early.

Here is our guide to six of the best small ship cruise lines visiting the Greek Islands:

1. SeaDream Yacht Club

A firm Mundy favourite, the intimate yachts of SeaDream carry just 112 lucky guests, with a laid-back, al fresco style that is perfectly suited to exploring the sun-kissed Greek islands. Itineraries include the glamour destinations of Mykonos and Santorini, as well as smaller islands such as rugged, fertile Naxos and the upmarket island of Patmos, where Saint John is said to have written the Book of Revelations.

SeaDream Yacht Club in Mykonos, Greece

2. Windstar Cruises

The small ships of Windstar Cruises are particularly popular with first-time cruisers, as well as those who prefer a more casual ambience on board, and their destination-focused itineraries visit many of the Mediterranean's smaller ports. The 148-guest sail-assisted yacht Wind Star operates a number of round-trip voyages from Athens, calling at islands including Rhodes, Crete and Santorini.

windstar_cruises_mykonos-smallship

French cruise line Ponant has undergone significant expansion over the last few years, and their stylish new Explorer class yachts offer an extensive Greek islands programme. An Athens round-trip ticks off the big hitters like Mykonos, Rhodes and Crete, while more unusual itineraries call at traffic-free Hydra and off-the-beaten-track Limnos.

4. Star Clippers

For those who love the romance of sail, Star Clippers is the perfect choice. The magnificent four-masted Star Flyer is a throwback to another age, and is a true sight to behold as she sails through the warm waters of the Mediterranean. You'll be the envy of other cruisers when you arrive at islands such as Skopelos, Skiathos and Santorini, and with just 170 guests the ship is able to visit those smaller ports that the bigger vessels can't reach.

5. Silversea

Silversea pioneered the all-inclusive luxury cruise concept, and are renowned for their personal service and varied itineraries. Their 'classic' fleet ranges in size from the 296-guest Silver Wind to Silver Spirit , which accommodates 608 guests, and they offer a number of Greek island itineraries. Silversea tend to stick to the better known islands such as Rhodes, Corfu, Santorini and Mykonos.

6. Seabourn

Seabourn's fleet of small ships is the most modern of all the ultra-luxury lines, with three 458-guest sister ships and Encore and Ovation , both of which carry 604 pampered travellers. Seabourn is a great choice if you're looking for a longer Greek islands cruise, with 14-night voyages that include Skopelos, Naxos, Santorini and Kos, as well as calls in Malta and Sicily. There are also some itineraries that combine Greece with Croatia and Slovenia, and occasionally you'll find even longer cruises that carry on to Dubai and beyond.

Searching the internet for Best Greek Islands there are no shortage of lists. We have found that these lists are designed for the mainstream tourist crowd and highlight the most popular islands, not necessarily the best. PERSONALIZED RECOMMENDATIONS

Firsthand insights from experts who have cruised the Greek Isles.

Amorgos, the island of the “Deep Blue” is the easternmost isle of the Cyclades. It is an oblong island with an abrupt mountainous morphology. It features two natural ports, Katapola at its center and Aigiali at the North. The main city is perched in the mountains with beautiful domed churches, windmills, and the dazzling white monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa, clinging to a cliff face above the sea.

Corfu is known as the Grand Lady of the Ionian Islands and the greenest island in Greece. Amongst the rugged mountains, lush countryside, and resort-studded shoreline is Corfu Town, the impressive historic center declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  Its cultural heritage reflects years spent under Venetian, French and British rule before it was united with Greece in 1864. Corfu Town is flanked by two imposing Venetian fortresses, features winding medieval lanes, a French-style arcade and the grand Palace of St. Michael and St. George.

short greek cruises

Crete is the largest and most populous island in Greece. It’s known for its beaches, natural beauty, cuisine and thousands of years of culture and history. Most small ships will spend the full day here so we advise booking a guided tour. The most popular towns are Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion and Agios Nikolaos. Tour highlights include the Old Venetian Harbor (Your small ship may stay in this historic port), Rethymnon Old Town and the Palace of Knossos. Top beaches include Elafonissi Beach, Balos Lagoon and Falassarna Beach. Crete is home to many national parks including Samaria Gorge and  Lefka Ori. There is so much do to in Crete it is impossible to see it all in one day.

Cyclades Islands

The Cyclades are an archipelago of 220 islands in the Aegean Sea. The name Cyclades means circle indicating the circle of islands around the sacred island of Delos (near Mykonos), the mythological birthplace of Apollo and Artemis. Experience the best of these islands including Santorini, Mykonos, Delos, Poros, Folegandros, Paros, Syros and Kythnos on the Jewels of the Cyclades cruise.

Delos is an island near Mykonos and a famous archaeological site. According to the Greek Mythology, Leto, haunted by jealous Hera, had found asylum on this island to give birth to Zeus’s children, Apollo and Artemis. Apollo became one of the most important gods and so Delos became a great sacred place for worshiping him. This 5,000-year-old settlement is one of the largest outdoor museums of the world, inscribed by UNESCO on the World Heritage list.

Only a short boat ride away, a visit to Delos is a must see for anyone visiting Mykonos. Most small ship cruises will offer an included or optional tour of Delos when calling in Mykonos.

Itea is the small port not far from Delphi, a revered archaeological site built on the side of a mountain. In its prime, Delphi was known for its wealth and reputation, attributes which grew from the site’s location as hosting the most important oracle in the classical world. Delphi became the premier site for the worship of the god Apollo. The oracle had the ability to prophecy the future and give advice. Visitors from across the Greek world traveled here to consult with the oracle and offered thanks to Apollo in the form of treasure.

Dodecanese Islands

The Dedocanese are a group of Greek Islands in the Southeastern Aegean Sea and Eastern Mediterranean. The name literally translates as “Twelve Islands” although there are 26 inhabited and many more uninhabited islands. The most famous are Rhodes, Kos and Karpathos.  MORE

The port of Palaia is a very short drive to the UNESCO site of Ancient Epidaurus, which was known throughout the Greek world as a healing sanctuary. It was reputed to be the birthplace of Apollo’s son Asclepius and for its theater, which is once again in use today due to its amazing acoustics. The sanctuary was looted by the Roman general Sulla, by pirates and later by Goths in 395 A.D. and very little remains of it today. The prosperity brought by the Asclepieion enabled the residents of Epidaurus to construct civic monuments, including a huge theater (approximately 300 B.C.) renowned for its symmetry and beauty.

Folegandros

The New York Times calls Folegandros “the most charmingly “Greek” of all the Cyclades. With no airport and no big cruise ships the island is truly off the beaten path. The remoteness and ruggedness of the island made it a place of exile for political prisoners from Roman times to the 20th century. Today its seductive charm has left its grim history behind and it has one of the most appealing clifftop villages .

Your small ship cruise guide may lead a walking tour through postcard perfect alleyways and scenic overlooks, helping you get the lay of the land. Then wander aimlessly to find stunning beaches and a mouthwatering meal under the shade of olive trees. A short hike on a stone path to the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in the village of Hora will be rewarded with a spectacular sunset.

FIND YOUR DREAM CRUISE IN GREECE

Popular ports & hidden gems only accessible by small ship.

Ancient Gythion was inhabited during prehistoric times and was used later by the Spartans as a port. Across the scenic Mani Peninsula are the spectacular Diros caves. Mani is at the tip of the Peloponnese, a distinctive area unlike any other area in Greece; a desolate region of underground lakes and rivers, windswept landscapes and towers. Cape Tenaro is also situated at the end of the Mani Peninsula and is the southernmost point of mainland Greece and the second southernmost point in mainland Europe.

Hydra is one of the most unspoiled and interesting Greek islands that is a preserved national monument and has retained all its 17th & 18th century charm and quaintness. This picturesque port town does not have any cars or scooters, but donkeys are plentiful within its marble quay.

In Ancient Greek Mythology, Kythira was considered to be the island of celestial Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love. Poised between the Aegean and Ionian Seas, the gloriously time-forgotten island of Kythira lies just 12km off the southern tip of the Peloponnese’s Lakonian Peninsula and is officially regarded as belonging to the Ionian Island group. Picturesque villages and architecture blend Venetian influences with Peloponnese Greek style. Your small ship may find a secluded beach for a swim stop and likely call at the main town of Chora.

Monemvassia

Monemvassia is a fishing and tourist town known for its medieval fortress built on a rocky islet connected to Gefyra on the mainland by a narrow bridge (called the Gibraltar of Eastern Mediterranean). Discover a remarkable medieval fortified town and the uniquely preserved Byzantine and Venetian architecture, and experience the beauty of the natural setting. Only around 20 people live here permanently.

Nafplion is the gateway to the UNESCO site of Mycenae, the powerful walled palace of Agamemnon, the Homeric Achaean king. The importance of the city, begins in 1650 B.C. and ceases around 1100 B.C. with the fall of the civilization to which it gives name. Visit the Lion’s Gate, the Palace, the so called Agamemnon Tomb and the museum.

Mykonos is popularly known for its nightlife, whitewashed landscapes and sandy beaches. A walking tour of Hora must include visits to the iconic windmills, Paraportiani Church, the Maritime and Cycladic Museums, designers’ shops and Little Venice Cafes. Mykonos is the jumping-off point for the archaeological site of the nearby island of Delos.

Visiting Mykonos by small ship means you will dock at the new port, only a short water bus or taxi ride from the main town. Since 3-6 large ships visit Mykonos every day in high season, most anchor offshore where guests must tender to shore.

One of the most picturesque cities in Greece with the Palamidi fortress towering above its charming old quarter, which is graced with narrow streets, Venetian houses, museums, quayside cafes and posh boutiques. According to mythology, Nafplios, the son of Poseidon, founded Nafplion. Over the years, Nafplion was taken over by Frankish, Venetian and Turkish forces, and these influences are evident everywhere—in the medieval castles, the Ottoman fountains and especially in the neoclassical architecture.

Paros is a quintessential Greek island. When you close your eyes and imagine what island hopping in Greece should be like, this is it. Beautiful traditional villages, neoclassical and medieval ruins are surrounded by idyllic nature, quant farms and picturesque wineries.

Paros became known for its white marble used to produce China and fine marble pieces world wide. Visit Parikia, one of the most typical Cycladic settlements with narrow cobbled paths, old churches, small shops and houses in blue and white. Highlights include the church of Panagia Katapoliani, the Venetian Castle and a smattering of archeological sites.

Paros is the perfect island to just wander the narrow alleyways admiring Cycladic architecture, shopping and dining. Very few cruise ships venture here so aboard a small ship you’ll have the place to yourself.  The smaller island of Antiparos, 1km southwest of Paros, is easily reached by car or boat.

A male traveler standing in front of ancient ruins in Greece.

Our experts have been there. Let us guide you.

In Greek mythology, Poseidon created the island of Paxos by striking Corfu with his trident, so that he and his wife Amphitrite could have some peace and quiet. The main town of Paxos is Gaios. Antipaxos is a smaller nearby island famous for its wine, and two of the finest sandy beaches in the Ionian Sea.

Peloponnese Peninsula

The Peloponnese Peninsula is a highlight of any trip to Greece.  Called on by large and small ships, it is also accessible by road and train from Athens. While many small ship itineraries will stop at various Peloponnese attractions, the region is also an ideal place for a trip extension to complement your cruise. Peloponnese is home to five UNESCO World Heritage sites, significant archeological sites, several thermal springs and caves along with various adventure activities including stunning hikes.

Piraeus, Athens

Piraeus is the biggest port city in the Mediterranean and the gateway to Athens, the capital and largest city in Greece. It was also at the heart of Ancient Greece, a powerful civilization and empire. Athens is still dominated by 5th-century BC landmarks, including the Acropolis, a hilltop citadel topped with ancient buildings like the colonnaded Parthenon temple. The Acropolis Museum and the National Archaeological Museum has preserved sculptures, vases, jewelry and more.

This lively and famous port on the island of Crete displays a blend of modernity and old time charm with its remains of Venetian and Ottoman architecture. The town of Heraklion in nearby, where you can tour the ancient Palace of Knossos and the Archaeological Museum. Knossos is the largest Bronze Age archaeological site on Crete, settled as early as the Neolithic period, and has been called Europe’s oldest city.

Santoríni is an island archipelago formed from a single volcanic cone that erupted in the second millennium B.C., burying the island’s Minoan culture in ash. The capital, Fira as well as Imerovigli and Oia cling to the steep slopes of the caldera rim. Its spectacular beauty and iconic whitewashed houses and blue-domed churches, along with the wineries, restaurants, beaches, hot springs, and archaeological sites have made this island one of Europe’s biggest tourist destinations.

Virtually all large cruise ships stop here. Many small ships also visit Santorini. As such it can be extremely crowded. Visiting Santorini aboard a small cruise ship has advantages. Most notably you’ll arrive early, enabling you to visit the renowned village of Oia before hordes of cruise ship tours arrive.

Distinguished for its pottery and its Venetian dovecotes, Sífnos is a rugged island with a harbor village and a beautiful upper chora (village), waterfront tavernas and fringed by sandy beaches such as Chrysopigi beach in the southeast, home to the striking white Chrysopigi Monastery.

As the capital of the Cycladic islands, Syros has always been a significant port town, and during the 19th century it was even more significant than Piraeus. Ermoupoli, the “Queen of the Cyclades,” stands on a naturally amphitheatrical site, with neo-classical buildings, old mansions and white houses cascading down to the harbor. The “City of Hermes” has numerous magnificent churches, the most interesting of which are Metamorphosis, Koimisis and St. Demetrius.

Tinos is dotted with villages steeped in Venetian history. The island’s Venetian-era dovecotes, terraced hillsides and green marble quarries have long made this a haven for artists. The village of Pyrgos is adorned with carved marble facades. Visit the church of Panagia Evangelistria, where thousands of pilgrims come every year to pray at Greece’s holiest shrine.

Best Greece cruises: Top 5 ships sailing the Greek isles

Ashley Kosciolek

From ancient mythology to wine and olives, there's a lot to love about Greece . There's something magical about the contrast between the deep-blue waters of the Aegean Sea and the ancient ruins and white buildings found on the Greek islands.

The best Greece cruises are those that offer a well-rounded mix of islands and key Greece destinations: Athens for its ruins, Santorini for its blue-roofed churches, Mykonos for its shopping and nightlife, and Rhodes for its palace and charming cobblestone streets. You might even luck out and snag a visit to places like Turkey or Montenegro, too.

If you're not sure which ships to consider, here's a list of the best cruises to Greece for different kinds of travelers.

Best Greek isles cruises for families: Disney Dream

short greek cruises

Disney Cruise Line is ideal for families. If a Disney cruise to Greece with kids sounds appealing, Disney Dream is the ship that will take you there.

The vessel is not the line's newest, but it's also not the oldest, so you'll still find plenty to do on board. The 2,500-passenger ship's small size means it's easy to learn your way around. Even better, Disney Dream is typically more affordable than the line's newer vessels.

Your children likely won't be bored on the ship. Dream offers jaw-dropping entertainment and daily character appearances. Its magical kids clubs feature a replica of Andy's room from "Toy Story" and the Millennium Falcon's cockpit from "Star Wars." (Expect surprise visits from R2-D2 or a squad of stormtroopers.)

Also, Greece is wrapped in tons of ancient history to spark your family's imagination. For example, in Athens, your family might choose to take a guided tour of the Acropolis, followed by a "day in the life of an archeologist" experience, where you'll search for treasures in a faux archeological dig.

If the kids prefer something sportier, they might enjoy an excursion that takes visitors to the Panathenaic Stadium for a tour and a talk about the first Olympic games of the modern era.

Disney Dream sails eight-, nine- and 11-night voyages from $416 per person, per night, for a windowless inside cabin. Some itineraries sail round-trip from Rome, while others cruise one-way between Rome and Barcelona with calls on Athens, Mykonos and other ports in Greece.

Best adults-only Greece cruises for party animals: Resilient Lady

short greek cruises

If you enjoy a lively megaship party atmosphere but you don't want an environment that's overrun with kids, Virgin Voyages ' Resilient Lady will likely be the best Greece cruise option for you.

Although Virgin's Greece itineraries are pretty standard, its onboard experience is what sets it apart in the region.

The adults-only ship combines a casual vibe with a ramped-up nightlife. You'll find passengers dressed up like mermaids, crew dressed up like drag queens and performers that more accurately represent a cross-section of real life than those whom you'll find on most other lines' vessels.

Nighttime shows run the gamut from lounge singers and seemingly impromptu atrium dance parties to secret below-deck visits to the "crew bar" for a tipple. There's also Scarlet Night — a rave-like pool-deck dance party where everyone wears red.

If that's not wild enough for you, there's also an app that lets you order Champagne to wherever you are on board, free fitness classes that encourage you to dress up in your '80s best and even a tattoo parlor so you can make some bad decisions.

Resilient Lady sails seven-, 10- and 14-night cruises, starting at $148 per person, per night, for an inside cabin. The voyages feature stops in Croatia, Turkey and Montenegro, in addition to Greece (Santorini, Rhodes and overnight in Mykonos from Athens), depending on the specific itinerary you choose.

Best budget-friendly Greece cruises: Rhapsody of the Seas

short greek cruises

Want to check out Greece but have limited funds? Although you'll have to factor in potentially expensive flights to Israel to board, a voyage on Royal Caribbean 's Rhapsody of the Seas could be right up your alley.

The ship is one of Royal Caribbean's older ships — it debuted in 1997 — but that doesn't mean you won't find fun onboard activities such as trivia, pool games, nightly theater performances, game shows, dancing and live music.

The best part if you're on a budget is the price. You can snag sailings of five or seven nights, round-trip from Haifa, from just $65 per person, per night, for an inside cabin. Voyages include calls to ports in Rhodes, Athens, Santorini and Mykonos, as well as Cyprus.

Best small-ship luxury Greece cruises: Windstar's Wind Star

short greek cruises

Windstar Cruises ' namesake, Wind Star, is a 148-passenger masted sailing yacht that offers a special Greek islands experience.

The ship is great for sailing aficionados. Because of its small size, the ship can visit smaller ports that larger vessels can't access. (Think Patmos, known to theology buffs as the place where the book of Revelation was written; Monemvasia, a town carved into rock; and Nafplion, modern Greece's original capital and now the site of museums, churches and castles.)

Also, Wind Star is an upscale ship, which means you'll find elevated dining and service on board. All cabins offer at least one window. When you purchase an all-inclusive fare, Wi-Fi, gratuities and alcohol are rolled into the price.

The vessel sails weeklong Greece cruises round-trip from Athens and calls on Mykonos, Santorini, Patmos, Monemvasia and Nafplion in Greece, as well as Kusadasi in Turkey. Rates start from $500 per person, per night, for an outside cabin.

Best locally based Greek isles cruises: Celestyal Journey

short greek cruises

Celestyal Cruises is a line you don't hear about too often, but it's based in Greece, which means it has a unique perspective on Greek island sailings.

If you're looking for a cruise vacation that's full of local Greek flare, check out the brand's Celestyal Journey. Set to debut for the line in September 2023, the ship isn't new, but following an extensive refurbishment, it will become the youngest member of the line's fleet.

Holding about 1,200 passengers, Celestyal Journey is small enough that you'll still receive a personalized experience but large enough to offer a multitude of onboard amenities. Enjoy yourself at the spa and fitness center, eight bars, seven restaurants, a chef's table experience and two pools. The ship offers 630 cabins, including 149 balcony cabins, 120 junior suites and 28 full-fledged suite accommodations.

Itineraries offered by Celestyal Journey range from four to 28 nights, departing from either Athens or Thessaloniki. Most voyages include calls on well-known Greek ports like Santorini, Rhodes and Mykonos, while longer sailings also venture to places in Turkey and Montenegro. Pricing is not yet available.

Bottom line

The best cruises to Greece combine a mix of fascinating destinations with a ship that fits your budget and travel style. If you're still unsure which cruise to choose, check with a knowledgeable cruise travel agent who can help you sort through the options.

According to Clabbers, this small luxury cruise line is perfect for those who prefer “a smaller, more casual yacht-style experience.” Per the pro, the onboard vibes are best described as “upscale, but not stuffy or over-the-top.” It’s also worth noting that “each ship offers a water sports platform with kayaks, water trampolines, stand-up paddling, snorkel gear, floating carpets, and other ‘toys’ that are deployed (weather and location permitting, of course) at least once on most Greek itineraries.”

Itinerary: While you can’t go wrong with any of Windstar’s Greece itineraries, Clabbers is quick to call out the popular Treasures of the Greek Isles voyage, which sets sail each week from May through October. Passengers can visit beloved ports of call like Mykonos and Santorini, along with “lesser-known (and less-crowded!) places like Monemvasia and Patmos.” As part of the experience, guests have the unique opportunity to feast among the ruins in neighboring Turkey as part of the line’s complimentary Evening in Ephesus “after-hours” event, which, per Clabbers, features a decadent five-course dinner accompanied by a chamber orchestra. Speaking of culinary offerings, it’s worth mentioning that Windstar is the official cruise line partner of the esteemed James Beard Foundation, which means you can expect some of the top eats at sea.

Explora Journeys

Courtesy of Explora Cruises

“A new entrant in the luxury travel industry, Explora Journeys offers all the style and comfort of a modern European luxury resort property on its 922-guest yacht-inspired Explora I and, launching later this year, Explora II, ” explains Clabbers. The line has taken the industry by storm, doing away with cliche cruise staples like main dining rooms, large buffets, and notoriously small staterooms. Instead, says Clabbers, guests can choose from a selection of “excellent restaurants that other companies would call specialty restaurants,” as well as “four swimming pools, each with their own vibe,” and all-suite accommodations, some of which boast private plunge pools. Per the pro, it’s worth noting that “Explora Journeys is the first luxury line that offers a dedicated youth activity program and facility year-round;” as such, it’s an excellent option for multi-generational families looking to cruise Greece in style.

Itinerary: Sailing round-trip from Athens, the aptly named eight-night A Journey from Athens to Athens itinerary includes a mix of popular ports like Mykonos and Santorini, along with hidden-gem locales like Syros, which is famous for its neoclassical architecture, a buzzy main town, and (essentially) crowd-free beaches. The cruise also visits the serene resort town of Marmaris in Turkey before heading to its final port of call, Kos , a gorgeous Greek island known for its sandy beaches, white-washed buildings, and historical sites.

Celebrity Cruises

Courtesy of Celebrity Cruises

According to Clabbers, " Celebrity Cruises was launched by a Greek shipping family," so the line has deep ties to — and many officers who hail from — the country. What’s more, he says, "When you visit Greece, they are taking you to their homeland, and it shows in their passion and love of the Hellenic nation." The line offers a range of larger ships and, thus, more options between accommodations (from economical inside rooms to luxurious suites in The Retreat), itineraries, restaurants, and entertainment; as such, Celebrity is "a great option for adults and families who like more activities on their ship."

Itinerary: The nine-night Best Of Greece itinerary cruises round-trip from Athens on select dates from May to October and takes place aboard the 2,170-passenger Celebrity Infinity , which Clabbers described as one of the line’s “smaller and more seasoned ships.” The first port of call is Santorini, followed by Ephesus in Turkey and Mykonos. “Additionally,” says Clabbers, " Infinity   travels to Volos and Thessaloniki, ports that are not typically visited by large ships.” Kavala, located in the northern part of the country, serves as the final port of call before heading back to Athens. Here, cruisers can enjoy a mix of history, culture, and architecture — plus some seriously stunning landscapes (from lagoons and lakes to wetlands and beaches) along with lush flora and fauna.

Courtesy of Silversea cruises

Silversea offers a variety of Greece cruise itineraries, and it’s one of few truly luxe all-inclusive cruise lines. Per Clabbers, the 596-passenger Silver Moon offers all-suite accommodations and a classic small-ship feel — complete with excellent meals, beverages, and shore excursions all included in your cruise fare. Speaking of the latter, he says, “The inclusion of shore excursions also makes it easy to dive deeper into Greek culture and culinary experiences.”

Itinerary: While you can’t go wrong with any of Silversea’s Greek itineraries, Clabbers especially recommends the seven-night Athens to Athens cruise, which “calls on highlights, but adds places like Souda Bay in Crete, Nafplion, Patmos, and Rhodes ,” where he recommends visiting the “temple ruins at Lindos, with views over the Mediterranean, and then walk in the footsteps of the Crusaders in the old town.” The cruise also stops in Nafplion, which, despite its romantic seaside setting and lovely beaches, is yet to be uncovered by most American travelers — for now, at least.

Variety Cruises

According to T+L A-list travel advisor and small ship specialist Mary Curry , this local Greek cruise line offers its own fleet of yachts, most carrying fewer than 50 passengers. Since the ships are so small, says Curry, “you can travel a bit further off the beaten path.” Variety offers a handful of Greece itineraries, including specially themed hiking and wine cruises.

Itinerary: Travelers craving a true off-the-beaten-path experience can book the seven-night Unexplored Greece voyage, which sails round-trip from Athens. The first port of call is Ikira, a tiny island known for its hot springs that also happens to be one of the world’s Blue Zones. Then, it’s off to Patmos, known for its fascinating history and unspoiled beaches, before overnighting in Lipsi, a laid-back isle famous for its gorgeous scenery. On board, guests can taste the destination’s famous wine, Aposperitis. The fun continues in Levintha, inhabited by a single family who raises animals and runs a restaurant where guests can enjoy fresh-caught fish. After, it’s off to Amorgos, where scenic hiking and beautiful beaches abound. The next day, you’ll stop at Panagia Hozoviotissa, a cliffside monastery dating back to the 10th century, before heading to Koufonisia, which boasts majestic caves and rock pools accessible only by boat (thankfully, Variety as you covered). The final stop of the day is the serene island of Iraklia, which offers clear-blue waters ideal for swimming. After remaining here overnight, you’ll head to the final port of call, Serifos, where guests can visit a remote beach, followed by an onboard BBQ feast to refuel before heading to Chora, a fairy-tale village.

Courtesy of Ponant Cruises

This French-owned cruise line offers an impressive fleet of small luxury ships. Additionally, says Curry, “Most cabins have private balconies, and travelers who plan early are rewarded with excellent value for the money.” What’s especially unique about Pontant, explains the pro, is that they “partner with Smithsonian Journeys on select departures to offer an enrichment program of included lectures and shore excursions in each port.”

Itinerary: Curry especially recommends the seven-night Cruising the Greek Islands of the Southern Aegean sailing, which will cruise round-trip from Athens in July and October 2025. The cruise calls on aforementioned spots like Patmos, Rhodes, and Amorgos before visiting Adamas in Milos, a volcanic island teeming with postcard-worthy white-washed towns and breathtakingly beautiful beaches. Adamas itself is a tiny fishing port where colorful boats shimmer against the blue waters. Finally, it’s off to Mykonos and Napflion before finally disembarking in Athens.

Disney Cruise Line

Courtesy of Disney Cruise Line

Disney Cruise Line is world-famous for its exciting onboard offerings for children of all ages — including character and superhero meet-and-greets, dining options themed after beloved Disney princesses, and live performances galore — making it a favorite for families hoping for a fun-filled Greece vacation.

Itinerary: "Setting sail aboard the Disney Dream on the seven-night Mediterranean with Greek Isles itinerary is nothing short of magical!" says Megan Guinnup , a travel agent with Marvelous Mouse Travels . Cruising round-trip from Rome, the ship calls on Naples before exploring Greece. In addition to popular ports like Athens and Mykonos, you'll also visit Chania on the island of Crete, which offers a bustling harbor, exquisite architecture, and cobblestone streets that look like they were plucked straight from a (Disney) fairy tale. After exploring each locale, the fun continues back on board, where, per the pro, "there is enchantment everywhere — meeting beloved characters, enjoying deck parties with Mickey and Minnie, and indulging in exquisite cuisine."

Royal Caribbean

This mega-ship line truly has it all: Flashy entertainment and onboard activities — which, depending on the ship, can include everything from water slides to zip lines — and plenty of drinking and dining offerings to appease even the pickiest eaters. Guinnup and Kari Dillon, owner of Marvelous Mouse Travels, recommend setting sail aboard Odyssey of the Seas , which offers several Greek itineraries. "On board," says Guinnup, "There's a plethora of activities to enjoy, from bumper cars and roller skating to exquisite dining and a bionic bar — there's something for everyone!"

Itinerary: The seven-night Greek Isles itinerary sails round-trip from Rome with stops in Santorini, Ephesus, Mykonos, and Naples. Keep in mind that because the ship is so large, Santorini and Mykonos are both tender ports. With that in mind, Dillon recommends springing on The Key, an optional add-on that includes priority tender access so that you can spend as much time as possible on land basking in its beauty.

Virgin Voyages

Courtesy of Virgin Voyages

Richard Branson’s adults-only line has taken the industry by storm with its innovative offerings, including 20-plus restaurants instead of buffets, an onboard tattoo parlor, adult-focused entertainment offerings, and a two-story nightclub.

Itinerary: Dillon especially recommends the seven-night Greek Island Aglow itinerary for travelers seeking a high-energy, adults-only option. She continues, telling T+L, “Not only does this sail to the islands of Santorini and Rhodes, but it [also] has an overnight in Mykonos, which is world-famous for its lively party atmosphere.” As a bonus, the cruise also calls on Bodrum in Turkey, which boasts beautiful beaches, flower-filled cafes, and a bustling nightlife scene.

Celestyal Cruises

The Greece-based Celesytal Cruises prides itself on offering an authentic Greek vacation experience. Additionally, Celesytal is unique in that it offers year-round Aegean Sea sailings cruising round-trip from Athens and ranging in length from three to 14 nights. On land, Celeystal guests can choose from a selection of the line’s “Authentic Excursions,” which are specially curated, small-group, expert-led experiences designed to take travelers off the beaten path. Options — including walking food tours and pottery-making demos at a local factory — abound, depending on the particular port of call.

Itinerary: The seven-night Idyllic Aegean voyage visits Thessaloniki (which offers an eclectic combination of history, nightlife, and gastronomy), Kuşadası (a popular Turkish resort town), and Heraklion (the capital of Crete) before heading to iconic isles like Santorini and Mykonos, where the ship will remain overnight. Before returning to Athens for disembarkation, you’ll also stop in magnificent Milos.

Greek Isle Beauty

Explore greek isle ports.

Piraeus (Athens), Greece

Step back in time on your cruise to Greece. Visit the Parthenon, the Temple of Athena Nike, and other ancient ruins. Follow your tour with an open-air dinner in the Plaka neighborhood.

Crete (Souda), Greece

On the northwest coast of the island of Crete, Souda beckons with a romantic Venetian harbor, Old Town’s tangle of streets, and a 500-year-old lighthouse.

Katakolon (Olympia), Greece

The region reveals what it means to be Greek: traditions that go back thousands of years, simple but delicious and healthy cuisine, towering mountains, and crystal blue seas.

Mykonos, Greece

Mykonos is a top choice among the glamourous. Chic tavernas with open terraces line the sea and after the sun dips down, the island sizzles with youthful energy.

Kerkira (Corfu), Greece

Come ashore to Corfu on your Greek Islands cruise, a muse for some of history’s most notable writers. Be inspired with a swim in its azure waters or wander verdant, cypress-dotted hills.

Rhodes, Greece

Even without its immense Helios statue, Rhodes remains one of the most-visited Greek islands with its white-sand beaches, glittering coves and fascinating ruins.

Thira (Santorini), Greece

Santorini has a dizzying array of archeological treasures, sun-bleached villages and world-renowned wines. To top it all, it’s home to one of the most beautiful volcanic calderas in the world.

Gythion (Sparta), Greece

Once the port of ancient Sparta, this lovely fishing town draws its name from gi theon, which means “land of the gods” in Greek. It’s the entryway to the rugged, mountainous realm of the Spartans—the fiercely independent people who rejected foreign rule time and time again.

Kavala (Neapolis), Greece

Northern Greece is often overlooked as a Greek Isle cruise destination, and many will not even have heard of the Macedonian port of Kavála. But the city, and the region it opens into, are both picturesque and culturally important, with a history that encompasses classical times as well as the more modern era.

Mytilene, Nisos Lesbos

Lesbos, Greece is well known for olives and ouzo production, and visitors can see evidence of both everywhere. The island's charms extend beyond those pleasures, though: It’s a beautiful place of open plains, sweeping hills, and sandy beaches with views of Turkey across the water.

Pylos, Greece

Pine-covered hills wrap around the lovely town of Pylos (often referred to as Navarino, its Italian name), in the Messenia region of Greece's Peloponnese. Cobblestoned streets lead down to the harbor, where outdoor cafés overlook the bay. This pleasant scene, however, belies a turbulent history.

Greek Island Small Ship Cruises

Island hopping in the beautiful greek islands.

Overview | Cruises

Greek Island Hopping Holidays

If you're looking for an unforgettable holiday, consider a Greek island cruise. These island hopping cruises take you to some of the most beautiful and historic islands in the Mediterranean, and they're perfect for tourists and travellers of all ages.  Our Greek Island Hopping Holidays take in famous archaeological sites, enjoy delicious Mediterranean food, take in wonderful scenery, soak up the sun as well as plenty of time for relaxation on beautiful beaches. The great thing about our island hopping cruises is the fact you get to see several beautiful greek islands during your holiday. The Greek Islands, steeped in myth, with their rich history and breath-taking scenery, call to mind the romanticism of Homer and the bravery of the ancient heroes. The only quest which you will be undertaking is the search for absolute relaxation, whether that is reading a book on deck, soaking up the sun, or exploring ancient history on shore.

Our Greek Islands small ship cruises set sail from Athens and include stops on the most famous of the Greek islands including Santorini and Mykonos as well as lesser known small, picturesque islands such as Naxos and Paros. We have an extensive selection of luxury Greek Island Cruises such as Antiquity to Byzantium small ship Cruise, Athens & Greek Islands cruise holidays, Greece & Adriatic small ship cruise, Greek Islands cruise & stay holidays, Luxury Greek Island cruises, variety cruises and much more. On board you will enjoy a high standard of personal service combined with excellent cuisine. A typical small ship cruise in the Greek Islands has around 25 cabins and employs 16 - 20 crew including a professional ship manager, tour guides and service managers. Your itinerary will be planned by your expert tour guide, who will let you know every evening what the programme is for the following day and give you an insight into the culture and history of the places you will be exploring.  Greek Island hopping cruises are brilliant for seeing more of the beautiful islands and packing more into your holiday.

Why Should I Choose A Small Ship Cruise

Small ship cruises in Greece offer a more intimate and personalised travel experience compared to large cruise ships. Some of the benefits of small ship cruises include:

1.      Flexibility: Small ship cruises can access ports and locations that larger ships cannot, giving passengers the opportunity to visit unique and remote destinations not possible on larger vessels.

2.      Personalised experience: With fewer passengers, small ship cruises offer a more personalised experience. The crew can provide individual attention to each guest, and the itinerary can be customised to suit the group's preferences.

3.      Privacy: Small ship cruises allow for a more private and intimate experience. Passengers can enjoy the ship's amenities without the crowds and queues that are common on larger ships.

4.      Cultural immersion: Small ship cruises often offer opportunities to learn about the local culture and traditions of the destinations visited. This can include onboard lectures, local guides, and authentic cultural experiences.

5.      Eco-friendly: Small ships have a smaller environmental footprint than larger cruise ships. They consume less fuel and produce fewer emissions, making them a more sustainable choice for travellers who are concerned about their impact on the environment.

Our small ship cruises provide a unique and immersive island hopping experience that is well-suited for travellers who value intimacy, flexibility, and cultural immersion. Diamond Star Experience have a fabulous collection of Greek Island cruises with luxury small ship and Gulet cruises ideal for greek island hopping holidays.
