Bishnupur Travel Guide

There are many things to love about Bishnupur, located about 27km away from the main town of Imphal. A quaint town situated at the foothills, it stretches downwards graciously towards the valley. There is a Vishnu temple located at Lamangdong, from which it is believed to have derived its name. A tourist will find plenty of opportunities for sightseeing and exploration here. At Loukoi Pat, you can enjoy boating, or visit Red Hill, the place where British and Japanese soldiers fought against each other during WW2. An Insight into Bishnupur Tourism

Bishnupur is one of the smallest districts in Manipur, but what it lacks in size, it more than makes up in its natural beauty, historical and cultural attractions. A tourist looking to have a peaceful but quality time will find it a great place to be in. It is extremely popular among Japanese tourists, and particularly those that are the descendants of Japanese armed forces. There is a famous Vishnu Temple too, which reminds visitors of its rich past. There is a waterfall, a lake, hills, and a national park, all of which make for some exciting sightseeing and exploration.

While travelling to Bishnupur, you can observe the lifestyle of the people, most of whom are engaged in agriculture, which is their primary source of livelihood. It also celebrates several festivals throughout the year, one of the most famous of which is Lai Haraoba. Celebrated in May, it is dedicated to Lord Thangjing, an ancient deity which predates Hinduism. Planning a visit in April would give you an opportunity to be a part of the Cheiraoba festival.

Interestingly, it coincides with the Meitei New Year. Some of the temples which you can visit in Bishnupur are Ibudhou Thangjing, Konung Lairembi and Ibudhou Pakhangba Khubam. A particularly beautiful sight is that of the Sangai, which is a brow antlered deer found in the southern parts of the Loktak Lake. It is the largest freshwater lake in eastern India and is home to floating marshes which are locally called phumdi. Once there, you can also observe the lifestyle of the villagers who live in close proximity to the lake.

Another place which you should visit during your trip to Bishnupur in Manipur is Keibul Lamjao National Park. It is the last natural habitat of the sangai, which is fondly called the dancing deer of the state. Other than sangai, the park is home to other animals like hog deer, otter, water fowls and migratory birds. There are two watch towers which offer some great views of the wildlife.

Popular Tourist Attractions in Bishnupur

Popular as the temple town of Manipur, the town has a lot to proffer to the tourists coming from different parts of the world. Right from temples to historical sites and national parks, Bishnupur is sure to help you make the most out of your visit to this small yet interesting town of North East India. The Bishnu Temple, Keibul Lamjao National Park, Loktak Lake and Sendra Island, Phubala, Ecological Park and more are the worth visiting tourist attractions in Bishnupur.

This impressive laterite ā€œeka-Ratnaā€ temple was built in the year 1737 A.D. by Shiramonidevi, one of the wives of the Malla king Bir Singha. The square structure stands on a raised plinth and is about 11.1 meters. on each side and 9.2 meters in height. The entrance to the temple has three arched gateways.

Built in A.D. 1656 by the Malla king Raghunath Singha, Kalachand temple is the earliest of the ā€œeka-Ratnaā€ temples found in Bishnupur. Made of laterite, the temple is about 11.1 m square on plan and 9.2 m. in height. The square cell structure has three arched openings on all four sides and has a curved roof.

This large temple with a miniature Eka Ratna shrine has no sculptures. Stone wheels have been attached to the low platform. Perhaps, this is meant to be the chariot in which Krishna took Arjuna to battle in the Mahabharata.

Nandalal temple with ridged tower and almost no decoration on it. Just opposite to it is three temples in a separate complex. Built by Malla King Krishna Singh in 1726, the temples are collectively known as Jor Mandir. The temple on the south has several scenarios from Mahabharata and Krishna Lila on its walls.

Just within a few kilometers from the possession, this Rashmancha is situated. In Bishnupur this is the oldest brick temple.

Itā€™s the wonder of Bishnupur. Apart from the terracotta work in the temple, terracotta pottery, artifacts and jewelry are equally popular.

Visiting the mills of Baluchari Sari is mandatory, as it is one of the most expensive saris in India. Weavers with utmost care and love indulge themselves in this profession.

This place is famous since it is the birthplace of Sarada Ma. The place is also having a well-known temple named Sri Sri Matri Mandir under Belur Math Authority

The pious birthplace of saint-philosopher Sri Ramakrishna. He spent his entire childhood here and also began his spiritual journey from the solitude of this village.

Bishnupur 2 Days 1-night Travel Guide

Lying at the heart of West Bengal, Bishnupur is a popular destinationĀ with a rich cultural heritage. Famous for its Terracotta temples and handicrafts, this place was once the capital of the Malla Kingdom.

This place is excellent for a weekend trip from Kolkata. Here are two days 1-night tour guides for exploring Bishnupur:

Bishnupur tour 1

Start the journey by hopping into the Rupasi Bangla train departing from Santragachi railway station at 6:25 am. It will reach Bishnupur by 9:45 am and head for the trip right after. Take a toto from the outskirts of the railway station (as they charge way less than the ones inside the station).

Visiting the famousĀ  Madan Mohan temple Ā is advisable without checking into the hotel. It will save on travel expenses.Ā

Itā€™s the most famous Radha Krishna temple in Bishnupur. You can enjoy a delightful ā€œBhogā€ (post-puja meal) for lunch by buying a meal coupon for 60 rupees.

After that, leave the hotel, have food, and rest quickly. Again, start your sightseeing journey by visiting the oldest music college in India ā€“Ā  Ram Sharan College of Music . First established as a school, this college holds its reputation to date.

Bishnupur is renowned for its architectural heritage, depicted beautifully in its temples. So we recommend visiting most of them on the first day itself.Ā

Spend your afternoon exploring the architectural aura of the seven temples in a single place. From the Kalachand temple, walk around the terracotta-designedĀ  Nandalal temple, Radha Govinda Mandir, Radha Madhav templesĀ  etc.

Before sunset, head to the shopaholicā€™s paradise atĀ  Poramatir Haat , a 7-minute walk from Nandalal temple, and find exclusive terracotta handicrafts and handwoven fabrics at the best prices, all made by villagers.

End the dayā€™s journey by visiting Dalmadal Cannon and Chhinnamasta temple, which lies adjacent. Finally, indulge in collecting beautifully hand-crafted souvenirs like Dokra works, ā€˜ Dashavatar Tash Ā ā€˜andĀ  Baluchari sarees Ā in this area.

Check out the hotel, but keep the luggage here and Start day two by exploring Bishnupurā€™s rich cultural heritage stored in AJC Purakriti Bhawan ā€“ the district museum. It is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm and is closed on Mondays.

Follow it up by strolling the Lal Bandh lake via the red village roads. Ideal for boating and bird watching.

Next, take a toto and go to Bara Pathar Darja , Choto Pathar Darja and Stone Chariot, built by Raja Veer Singh. Do check out the Lalji temple beside Bara Pathar Darja. The Mrinmoyee Mandir, a Durga mandir, is a must-visit in Bishnupur.

To explore the remaining places, purchase online tickets with your identity details. The Jor Bangla stands majestically, offering a reminiscence of the past. Check out the Gum Ghar , Jugal Kishore temple and Pachchura Shyam Rai temple , showcasing glimpses of the intricate architectural heritage.

Keep the best for the last and visit Rasmancha ā€“ the landmark tourist spot of Bishnupur. Festivals of Radha-Krishna were earlier celebrated here. All these sites are now conserved as heritage sites by the Archaeological Survey of India. If you have extra time, visit Baluchari / Swarnachari saree shop in Bishnupur. Check theĀ  playlist .

Lastly, take your luggage from the hotel and depart for Kolkata, taking the same Rupasi Bangla train at 5:30 p.m. from Bishnupur. Your short and eventful journey to Bishnupur comes to an end here. I hope this guide helps you arrange your weekend trip to Bishnupur.

Nobody knows where heaven is, but in a moonlight light at Mukutmanipur, one gets heavenly bliss by staying overnight. There are two dams in Mukutmanipur, which are Kangshabati and Kumari dams.

Sunrise in Mukutmaniur is also well appreciated. Paresh Nath Hill is 6 km along Dam Tip road and 3 km along the rustic path at the confluence ofĀ  Kangshabati Ā andĀ  Kumari Ā rivers.

On top of the hillock, the Hindu godĀ Lord Shiva, theĀ Jain godĀ Parshnath swamiĀ of chlorite stone and many other goddesses can be found. Please note the hotel price is very high there.

Exploring the Heritage Temple Town of Bishnupur

bishnupur tour plan

traveller Budget Wayfarers

Bishnupur sightseeing can be a fascinating experience for travelers if the exploration of this temple town is done in detail. I traveled solo to Bishnupur and it turned out to be a lovely experience.

The sun glinted off the thousands of idols of Lord Krishna (a major deity in Hinduism). The devotees played instruments and crooned. The villagers swayed and danced to the music. I could visualize it in front of my eyes as my guide narrated the story of the Raas celebrations during the 18 th century. No, I was not in Mathura or Vrindavan. I was at Rasmancha and my Bishnpur sightseeing had begun.

Bishnupur lies a Ā few hundred kilometres away from Kolkata and is home to many heritage Terracotta temples. If you are looking for a short cultural getaway, Bishnupur sightseeing is a damn good option. It is also a great place to explore the fascinating Terracotta art form, especially in the nearby villages.

In my current travel blog on Bishnupur sightseeing, I would like to elaborate on the must-visit places in and around Bishnupur. This temple town is not only culturally rich but is also sprawling with works of talented native artists. Also, there are nearby places that can be visited.

Bishnupur Sightseeing

Bishnupur lies in the ā€œRahrā€ region of West Bengal. This is the land of the red soil, popularly called ā€œRanga Matiā€. Ruled by the Malla Dynasty Kings during the 17th and 18th centuries, it is also known as the ā€œTemple Cityā€.

Malla kings were known to be great patrons of art and culture. Under them, the unique architecture of burned clay-tiled structures flourished.

Bishnupur is a culturally rich place. In the tourist map of West Bengal, it is slowly and steadily making a place of itself and growing popular even further.

Important Travel Insights for Bishnupur Sightseeing

Here are a few aspects of Bishnupur that you should know as a traveler to the region ā€“

What Bishnupur Sightseeing Offers its Visitors?

Bishnupur as a place has a lot to offer to a first time visitor. Itā€™s a culturally rich place displaying its heritage to all.

While youā€™re in Bishnupur, make sure to take a detailed tour of the Terracotta temples. Also, experience the classical music form of Bishnupur Gharana and maybe buy a few Baluchari sarees.

bishnupur sightseeing

How did My Bishnupur Sightseeing Journey Begin ?

Ā  I had planned a solo trip for Bishnupur sightseeing long ago. So when it was the actual time that my trip has to begin, I was super excited. In the excitement, I could hardly sleep. When the alarm went off at 5 AM it felt as though I had just fallen asleep. I had planned for the Aranyak express from the Shalimar Station.

Still rubbing off sleep, the only memory I have is that of my Uber ride to the Shalimar Station. The Vidyasagar Setu or second Hooghly bridge looked beautiful in the morning light. It appears to be majestically straddling the twin cities of Kolkata and Howrah.

My Stay at Bishnupur

I reached Bishnupur at around 11 and soon thereafter took a rickshaw to the West Bengal Tourism Lodge . I had booked this place for a night in advance as well.

Quickly dumping my backpack, I decided to eat lunch. The early start had got me hungry. The West Bengal Tourism Lodge has simple but tasty options. The Chef personally suggested trying The Posto Bora . ā€˜Itā€™s a speciality of the regionā€™ he mentioned.

The Delicious Posto Bora

For Bengalis (native people of the Indian state of West Bengal) Posto needs no introduction.Ā  Posto Bora is basically mashed poppy seeds and is a delicacy in Bengal.

It is ground traditionally on the pestle with green chillies and salt. It is then cooked with vegetables like potatoes,Ā  gourd etc.

Bengalis tend to have potatoes with everything so this is not an exception as well.

The Posto Bora is one of the popular dishes in this region. The ground Posto is made into circular flattened shapes, battered and deep fried. Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside it is one of those sublime experiences you wonā€™t forget.

bishnupur sightseeing

Touring the Temples ā€“ The Best Aspect of Bishnupur Sightseeing

Ā  Bishnupur has a number of old temples with ornate cravings strewn across the region. Fortunately, most of the temples are very well preserved and you can take a tour to visit them.

The tour starts from the ā€œRasmanchaā€ where you can take tickets for visiting all the temples of the city.

Rasmancha is a beautiful piece of architecture. Technically it is not a temple but an elevated platform with a maze of archways.

During the Raas celebrations, the idols and pictures of Lord Krishna from around the town are brought here and displayed in the galleries.

In Hindu mythology, the Raas festival is a celebration where villagers danced to the tune of the flute being played by Lord Krishna

Even though some of the temples are still being used for worship by the locals and some have been locked away for preservation, it is not a religious tour. It is rather a cultural journey to appreciate art and to see how society influenced it.

bishnupur sightseeing

Beautiful Temples of Bishnupur

Here are a few temples that should be an essential part of any visitorā€™s Bishnupur sightseeing. You should visit them one by one in any order you deem fit.

Explore each of these temples. They have so much to offer when it comes to the regionā€™s rich artistic heritage and culture.

bishnupur sightseeing

Most visitors traveling to Bishnupur often have a very pertinent question, ā€œIs a tour guide needed?ā€ Let me throw more light on this below.

Is a Tour Guide Required for Exploring the Bishnupur Temples?

Ā  Unless your middle name is Wiki, it is better to take a guide who can explain the history and point out the specialities of each temple.

I hired a local guide from the West Bengal Tourism, right in front of the Rasmancha. He was rather good. Time and again I found myself transported back in time as he narrated the history of the city.

He told me later that he comes from a ā€˜Moiraā€™ (sweet makers) family. His ancestors moved to Bishnupur on the behest of the King some 400 years ago to create innovative sweets for the royal kitchen.

Over the years that business has ceased to be profitable and therefore the newer generations have moved on to other occupations for livelihood.

Biking Around Bishnupur

Within Bishnupur, public transport is limited to rickshaws Ā or autos. If you are not having your own vehicle, it is better to rent one to travel in and around the town of Bishnupur.

Since I was on a solo trip to Bishnupur, a car seemed to me like an extravaganza. My guide was kind enough to offer a pillion rider on his bike. Though initially sceptical I took up the offer. It saved time as well as the effort of walking all over the town.

Reflecting back, I feel it is a moderately safe place. Sure as a woman travelling around you have to be aware of your surroundings but always trust your instincts. Trust me, they will guide you well.

bishnupur sightseeing

The Architecture of Bishnupur Temples

Each temple has a different kind of roof in Bishnupur. Some have a single arch (Lalji) while some have two (Jor Bangla) or even more (Shyam Rai). Some even have dome-like structures seen typically in mosques.

Though the temples are dedicated to Vishnu (the name of the town is influenced by him) there is a distinct Islamic influence in the architecture. This signifies that different sects co-existed in harmony and had a strong influence on art.

Rich Terracotta Work

The terracotta work on the walls and pillars is quite exquisite and detailed. The pattern is similar in most temples. They have tiles arranged in layers.

The lowermost layer has terracotta tiles depicting various hunting scenes while the layer above is a reflection of contemporary society. There are scenes of potters, blacksmiths, farmers and festival celebrations.

bishnupur sightseeing

Depiction of Mythology in the Temples

The layer at the top depicts the epics of Indian mythology. Various scenes of Mahabharata, Ramayana and Vishnuā€™s das avatars (incarnations) have been beautifully depicted with intricate details on the terracotta tiles.Ā  Lord Krishna is a permanent theme.

Built of Temples

Some temples are built of rock with a plaster layer facade on which the designs have been engraved. There is also some Rajasthani (a state on the Western edge of the country) influence observed. For example, the concept of decorative closed doors under arches and multiple stairwells from all four sides going down to a water body.

Temples have their own kitchen

Each temple also has a dedicated kitchen and a place where devotees can perform songs and rituals. Varying on the degree of erosion, in some temples, these distinctly stand out whereas in some they are a part of the ruins.

As I walked past the kitchen at the Lalji temple I imagined the scene during a festival. An array of cooks busy making the offerings for the Lord. Huge utensils with big ladles burning in the oven. Mounds of special bhog (holy food) are ready to be taken to the temple.

bishnupur sightseeing

Sightseeing Beyond the Temples

Ā  Within the city other than these temples there are various other sightseeing places.

Bishnupur is a town that should not just be visited for its renowned temples but other offbeat places and things as well. As a traveler, I believe that the best stories are found in places that are unknown to the world.

bishnupur sightseeing

Now that you know about the temple town of Bishnupur, itā€™s time I share with you the locales outside Bishnupur but within a reasonable distance.

Bishnupur Sightseeing Outside the Main TownĀ

There are various places that should be on your Bishnupur sightseeing itinerary that lie outside the main town. They range from a duration of an hour to 3 hours maximum.

Mukutmanipur

This is a scenic spot located at the confluence of Kongshaboti and Kumari rivers made popular in Bengali film shoot locales.

Kamarpukur/Joyrambati

This is the birthplace of Shri Ram Krishna and Sarada Devi. It is considered a religious sacred place visited often by the followers of the sect of Ramkrishna.

Gongoni is aĀ  quaint spot beside the Shilabati river. It has red sand cliffs overlooking the river below as it meanders its way to meet with the Kangshabati river. It is a popular picnic place and there are some spots artificially made where you can relax and enjoy the surrounding beauty by the riverside.

bishnupur sightseeing

A Visit to Panchmura ā€“ An Artisansā€™ Village

Panchmura is a place that should surely be visited if youā€™re in Bishnupur. It lies at a small distance of 22 km from Bishnupur.

The villagers here create the terracotta figures and other artefacts. They range from tiles, pottery items, and figures of horses and elephants.

These horses and elephants made famous by the artist MF Hussain are shaped in a particular way typical to this region and can be easily identified as the Bishnupuri horse. There are thousands of gods and goddess figurines as well. Durga and Ganesh are the most predominant.

Visit Artist Homes

Artists have opened up their houses where you can walk in to see the actual process of creation. Often the entire family is involved and they are quite forthcoming to explain the various nitty-gritty of the trade.

The process starts with getting clay from under the ground surface ā€“ 10 feet to be precise. It is then processed and softened with water. Every artist owns a ā€˜Chakaā€™ or the potterā€™s wheel on which he moulds the base structures.

Hand made art

The various decorations or the finer details on these are then done by hand. This is where it varies from artist to artist in terms of creativity and designs. Thus the quality of the final product.

Moulds are used for the tiles. For the animal figures the legs, neck, body, and head are created separately on the wheel and assembled manually. These are then sun-dried for a few days ā€“ just enough to be hard but not to be brittle.

Then the burning process starts in the kilns. Unlike the wheels, the kilns are usually owned together by three or four families together. The kilns are lit by dried leaves from the neighbouring woods.

A glazed coating or colouring may also be applied before putting the structures in the kilns. The burning is done under close monitoring. Sometimes it might take days. If you visit the village early in the morning you can see this process end to end.

Rural Craft Hub

Department of Micro, small and medium enterprises and Textiles of the Government of West Bengal in collaboration with UNESCO have developed the Rural Craft hub in this village bringing in some amount of much-needed awareness.

From ā€œThe New York Times,ā€ Iā€™m Michael Barbaro. This is ā€œThe Daily.ā€

[MUSIC PLAYING]

Today, the saga of Ronna McDaniel and NBC and what it reveals about the state of television news headed into the 2024 presidential race. Jim Rutenberg, a ā€œTimesā€ writer at large, is our guest.

Itā€™s Monday, April 1.

Jim, NBC News just went through a very public, a very searing drama over the past week, that we wanted you to make sense of in your unique capacity as a longtime media and political reporter at ā€œThe Times.ā€ This is your sweet spot. You were, I believe, born to dissect this story for us.

Oh, brother.

Well, on the one hand, this is a very small moment for a major network like NBC. They hire, as a contributor, not an anchor, not a correspondent, as a contributor, Ronna McDaniel, the former RNC chairwoman. It blows up in a mini scandal at the network.

But to me, it represents a much larger issue thatā€™s been there since that moment Donald J. Trump took his shiny gold escalator down to announce his presidential run in 2015. This struggle by the news media to figure out, especially on television, how do we capture him, cover him for all of his lies, all the challenges he poses to Democratic norms, yet not alienate some 74, 75 million American voters who still follow him, still believe in him, and still want to hear his reality reflected in the news that theyā€™re listening to?

Right. Which is about as gnarly a conundrum as anyone has ever dealt with in the news media.

Well, itā€™s proven so far unsolvable.

Well, letā€™s use the story of what actually happened with Ronna McDaniel and NBC to illustrate your point. And I think that means describing precisely what happened in this situation.

The story starts out so simply. Itā€™s such a basic thing that television networks do. As elections get underway, they want people who will reflect the two parties.

They want talking heads. They want insiders. They want them on their payroll so they can rely on them whenever they need them. And they want them to be high level so they can speak with great knowledge about the two major candidates.

Right. And rather than needing to beg these people to come on their show at 6 oā€™clock, when they might be busy and itā€™s not their full-time job, they go off and they basically put them on retainer for a bunch of money.

Yeah. And in this case, hereā€™s this perfect scenario because quite recently, Ronna McDaniel, the chairwoman of the Republican National Committee through the Trump era, most of it, is now out on the market. Sheā€™s actually recently been forced out of the party. And all the networks are interested because hereā€™s the consummate insider from Trump world ready to get snatched up under contract for the next election and can really represent this movement that theyā€™ve been trying to capture.

So NBCā€™S key news executives move pretty aggressively, pretty swiftly, and they sign her up for a $300,000 a year contributorā€™s contract.

Nice money if you can get it.

Not at millions of dollars that they pay their anchors, but a very nice contract. Iā€™ll take it. Youā€™ll take it. In the eyes of NBC execs she was perfect because she can be on ā€œMeet the Pressā€ as a panelist. She can help as they figure out some of their coverage. They have 24 hours a day to fill and hereā€™s an official from the RNC. You can almost imagine the question that would be asked to her. Itā€™s 10:00 PM on election night. Ronna, what are the Trump people thinking right now? Theyā€™re looking at the same numbers you are.

That was good, but thatā€™s exactly it. And we all know it, right? This is television in our current era.

So last Friday, NBC makes what should be a routine announcement, but one theyā€™re very proud of, that theyā€™ve hired Ronna McDaniel. And in a statement, they say it couldnā€™t be a more important moment to have a voice like Ronnaā€™s on the team. So allā€™s good, right? Except for thereā€™s a fly in the ointment.

Because it turns out that Ronna McDaniel has been slated to appear on ā€œMeet the Press,ā€ not as a paid NBC contributor, but as a former recently ousted RNC chair with the ā€œMeet The Pressā€ host, Kristen Welker, whoā€™s preparing to have a real tough interview with Ronna McDaniel. Because of course, Ronna McDaniel was chair of the party and at Trumpā€™s side as he tried to refuse his election loss. So this was supposed to be a showdown interview.

From NBC News in Washington, the longest-running show in television history. This is ā€œMeet The Pressā€ with Kristen Welker.

And here, all of a sudden, Kristin Welker is thrown for a loop.

In full disclosure to our viewers, this interview was scheduled weeks before it was announced that McDaniel would become a paid NBC News contributor.

Because now, sheā€™s actually interviewing a member of the family whoā€™s on the same payroll.

Right. Suddenly, sheā€™s interviewing a colleague.

This will be a news interview, and I was not involved in her hiring.

So what happens during the interview?

So Welker is prepared for a tough interview, and thatā€™s exactly what she does.

Can you say, as you sit here today, did Joe Biden win the election fair and square?

He won. Heā€™s the legitimate president.

Did he win fair and square?

Fair and square, he won. Itā€™s certified. Itā€™s done.

She presses her on the key question that a lot of Republicans get asked these days ā€” do you accept Joe Biden was the winner of the election?

But, I do think, Kristen ā€”

Ronna, why has it taken you until now to say that? Why has it taken you until now to be able to say that?

Iā€™m going to push back a little.

McDaniel gets defensive at times.

Because I do think itā€™s fair to say there were problems in 2020. And to say that does not mean heā€™s not the legitimate president.

But, Ronna, when you say that, it suggests that there was something wrong with the election. And you know that the election was the most heavily scrutinized. Chris Krebs ā€”

Itā€™s a really combative interview.

I want to turn now to your actions in the aftermath of the 2020 election.

And Welker actually really does go deeply into McDanielā€™s record in those weeks before January 6.

On November 17, you and Donald Trump were recorded pushing two Republican Michigan election officials not to certify the results of the election. And on the call ā€”

For instance, she presses McDaniel on McDanielā€™s role in an attempt to convince a couple county commissioner level canvassers in Michigan to not certify Bidenā€™s victory.

Our call that night was to say, are you OK? Vote your conscience. Not pushing them to do anything.

McDaniel says, look, I was just telling them to vote their conscience. They should do whatever they think is right.

But you said, do not sign it. If you can go home tonight, do not sign it. How can people read that as anything other than a pressure campaign?

And Welkerā€™s not going to just let her off the hook. Welker presses her on Trumpā€™s own comments about January 6 and Trumpā€™s efforts recently to gloss over some of the violence, and to say that those who have been arrested, heā€™ll free them.

Do you support that?

I want to be very clear. The violence that happened on January 6 is unacceptable.

And this is a frankly fascinating moment because you can hear McDaniel starting to, if not quite reverse some of her positions, though in some cases she does that, at least really soften her language. Itā€™s almost as if sheā€™s switching uniforms from the RNC one to an NBC one or almost like breaking from a role she was playing.

Ronna, why not speak out earlier? Why just speak out about that now?

When youā€™re the RNC chair, you kind of take one for the whole team, right? Now, I get to be a little bit more myself.

She says, hey, you know what? Sometimes as RNC chair, you just have to take it for the team sometimes.

Right. What sheā€™s really saying is I did things as chairwoman of the Republican National committee that now that I no longer have that job, I can candidly say, I wished I hadnā€™t done, which is very honest. But itā€™s also another way of saying Iā€™m two faced, or I was playing a part.

Ronna McDaniel, thank you very much for being here this morning.

Then something extraordinary happens. And I have to say, Iā€™ve never seen a moment like this in decades of watching television news and covering television news.

Welcome back. The panel is here. Chuck Todd, NBC News chief political analyst.

Welker brings her regular panel on, including Chuck Todd, now the senior NBC political analyst.

Chuck, letā€™s dive right in. What were your takeaways?

And he launches right into what he calls ā€”

Look, let me deal with the elephant in the room.

The elephant being this hiring of McDaniel.

I think our bosses owe you an apology for putting you in this situation.

And he proceeds, on NBCā€™S air, to lace into management for, as he describes it, putting Welker in this crazy awkward position.

Because I donā€™t know what to believe. She is now a paid contributor by NBC News. I have no idea whether any answer she gave to you was because she didnā€™t want to mess up her contract.

And Todd is very hung up on this idea that when she was speaking for the party, she would say one thing. And now that sheā€™s on the payroll at NBC, sheā€™s saying another thing.

She has credibility issues that she still has to deal with. Is she speaking for herself, or is she speaking on behalf of whoā€™s paying her?

Todd is basically saying, how are we supposed to know which one to believe.

What can we believe?

It is important for this network and for always to have a wide aperture. Having ideological diversity on this panel is something I prided myself on.

And what heā€™s effectively saying is that his bosses should have never hired her in this capacity.

I understand the motivation, but this execution, I think, was poor.

Someone said to me last night we live in complicated times. Thank you guys for being here. I really appreciate it.

Now, letā€™s just note here, this isnā€™t just any player at NBC. Chuck Todd is obviously a major news name at the network. And him doing this appears to just open the floodgates across the entire NBC News brand, especially on its sister cable network, MSNBC.

And where I said Iā€™d never seen anything like what I saw on ā€œMeet the Pressā€ that morning, Iā€™d never seen anything like this either. Because now, the entire MSNBC lineup is in open rebellion. I mean, from the minute that the sun comes up. There is Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski.

We werenā€™t asked our opinion of the hiring. But if we were, we would have strongly objected to it.

Theyā€™re on fire over this.

believe NBC News should seek out conservative Republican voices, but it should be conservative Republicans, not a person who used her position of power to be an anti-democracy election denier.

But it rolls out across the entire schedule.

Because Ronna McDaniel has been a major peddler of the big lie.

The fact that Ms. McDaniel is on the payroll at NBC News, to me that is inexplicable. I mean, you wouldnā€™t hire a mobster to work at a DAā€™s office.

Rachel Maddow devotes an entire half hour.

Itā€™s not about just being associated with Donald Trump and his time in the Republican Party. Itā€™s not even about lying or not lying. Itā€™s about our system of government.

Thumbing their noses at our bosses and basically accusing them of abetting a traitorous figure in American history. I mean, just extraordinary stuff. Itā€™s television history.

And letā€™s face it, we journalists, our bosses, we can be seen as crybabies, and weā€™re paid complaining. Yeah, thatā€™s what weā€™re paid to do. But in this case, the NBC executives cannot ignore this, because in the outcry, thereā€™s a very clear point that theyā€™re all making. Ronna McDaniel is not just a voice from the other side. She was a fundamental part of Trumpā€™s efforts to deny his election loss.

This is not inviting the other side. This is someone whoā€™s on the wrong side ā€”

Of history.

Of history, of these moments that weā€™ve covered and are still covering.

And I think itā€™s fair to say that at this point, everyone understands that Ronna McDanielā€™s time at NBC News is going to be very short lived. Yeah, basically, after all this, the executives at NBC have to face facts itā€™s over. And on Tuesday night, they release a statement to the staff saying as much.

They donā€™t cite the questions about red lines or what Ronna McDaniel represented or didnā€™t represent. They just say we need to have a unified newsroom. We want cohesion. This isnā€™t working.

I think in the end, she was a paid contributor for four days.

Yeah, one of the shortest tenures in television news history. And look, in one respect, by their standards, this is kind of a pretty small contract, a few hundred thousand dollars they may have to pay out. But it was way more costly because they hired her. They brought her on board because they wanted to appeal to these tens of millions of Americans who still love Donald J. Trump.

And what happens now is that this entire thing is blown up in their face, and those very same people now see a network that, in their view, in the view of Republicans across the country, this network will not accept any Republicans. So it becomes more about that. And Fox News, NBCā€™S longtime rival, goes wall to wall with this.

Now, NBC News just caved to the breathless demands from their far left, frankly, emotionally unhinged host.

I mean, I had it on my desk all day. And every minute I looked at that screen, it was pounding on these liberals at NBC News driving this Republican out.

Itā€™s the shortest tenure in TV history, I think. But why? Well, because she supports Donald Trump, period.

So in a way, this leaves NBC worse off with that Trump Republican audience they had wanted to court than maybe even they were before. Itā€™s like a boomerang with a grenade on it.

Yeah, it completely explodes in their face. And thatā€™s why to me, the whole episode is so representative of this eight-year conundrum for the news media, especially on television. They still havenā€™t been able to crack the code for how to handle the Trump movement, the Trump candidacy, and what it has wrought on the American political system and American journalism.

Weā€™ll be right back.

Jim, put into context this painful episode of NBC into that larger conundrum you just diagnosed that the media has faced when it comes to Trump.

Well, Michael, itā€™s been there from the very beginning, from the very beginning of his political rise. The media was on this kind of seesaw. They go back and forth over how to cover him. Sometimes they want to cover him quite aggressively because heā€™s such a challenging candidate. He was bursting so many norms.

But at other times, there was this instinct to understand his appeal, for the same reason. Heā€™s such an unusual candidate. So there was a great desire to really understand his voters. And frankly, to speak to his voters, because theyā€™re part of the audience. And we all lived it, right?

But just let me take you back anyway because everythingā€™s fresh again with perspective. And so if you go back, letā€™s look at when he first ran. The networks, if you recall, saw him as almost like a novelty candidate.

He was going to spice up what was expected to be a boring campaign between the usual suspects. And he was a ratings magnet. And the networks, they just couldnā€™t get enough of it. And they allowed him, at times, to really shatter their own norms.

Welcome back to ā€œMeet the Press,ā€ sir.

Good morning, Chuck.

Good morning. Let me start ā€”

He was able to just call into the studio and riff with the likes of George Stephanopoulos and Chuck Todd.

What does it have to do with Hillary?

She canā€™t talk about me because nobody respects women more than Donald Trump.

And CNN gave him a lot of unmitigated airtime, if you recall during the campaign. They would run the press conferences.

Itā€™s the largest winery on the East Coast. I own it 100 percent.

And let him promote his Trump steaks and his Trump wine.

Trump steaks. Where are the steaks? Do we have steaks?

I mean, it got that crazy. But again, the ratings were huge. And then he wins. And because they had previously given him all that airtime, theyā€™ve, in retrospect, sort of given him a political gift, and more than that now have a journalistic imperative to really address him in a different way, to cover him as they would have covered any other candidate, which, letā€™s face it, they werenā€™t doing initially. So thereā€™s this extra motivation to make up for lost ground and maybe for some journalistic omissions.

Right. Kind of correct for the lack of a rigorous journalistic filter in the campaign.

Exactly. And the big thing that this will be remembered for is weā€™re going to call a lie a lie.

I donā€™t want to sugarcoat this because facts matter, and the fact is President Trump lies.

Trump lies. Weā€™re going to say itā€™s a lie.

And I think we canā€™t just mince around it because they are lies. And so we need to call them what they are.

Weā€™re no longer going to use euphemisms or looser language weā€™re. Going to call it for what it is.

Trump lies in tweets. He spreads false information at rallies. He lies when he doesnā€™t need to. He lies when the truth is more than enough for him.

CNN was running chyrons. They would fact check Trump and call lies lies on the screen while Trump is talking. They were challenging Trump to his face ā€”

One of the statements that you made in the tail end of the campaign in the midterms that ā€”

Here we go.

That ā€” well, if you donā€™t mind, Mr. President, that this caravan was an invasion.

ā€” in these crazy press conferences ā€”

Theyā€™re are hundreds of miles away, though. Theyā€™re hundreds and hundreds of miles away. Thatā€™s not an invasion.

Honestly, I think you should let me run the country. You run CNN. And if you did it well, your ratings ā€”

Well, let me ask ā€” if I may ask one other question. Mr. President, if I may ask another question. Are you worried ā€”

Thatā€™s enough. Thatā€™s enough.

And Trump is giving it right back.

I tell you what, CNN should be ashamed of itself having you working for them. You are a rude, terrible person. You shouldnā€™t be working for CNN.

Very combative.

So this was this incredibly fraught moment for the American press. Youā€™ve got tens of millions of Trump supporters seeing whatā€™s really basic fact checking. These look like attacks to Trump supporters. Trump, in turn, is calling the press, the reporters are enemies of the people. So itā€™s a terrible dynamic.

And when January 6 happens, itā€™s so obviously out of control. And what the traditional press that follows, traditional journalistic rules has to do is make it clear that the claims that Trump is making about a stolen election are just so abjectly false that they donā€™t warrant a single minute of real consideration once the reporting has been done to show how false they are. And I think that American journalism really emerged from that feeling strongly about its own values and its own place in society.

But then thereā€™s still tens of millions of Trump voters, and they donā€™t feel so good about the coverage. And they donā€™t agree that January 6 was an insurrection. And so we enter yet another period, where the press is going to have to now maybe rethink some things.

In what way?

Well, thereā€™s a kind of quiet period after January 6. Trump is off of social media. The smoke is literally dissipating from the air in Washington. And news executives are kind of standing there on the proverbial battlefield, taking a new look at their situation.

And theyā€™re seeing that in this clearer light, theyā€™ve got some new problems, perhaps none more important for their entire business models than that their ratings are quickly crashing. And part of that diminishment is that a huge part of the country, that Trump-loving part of the audience, is really now severed from him from their coverage.

They see the press as actually, in some cases, being complicit in stealing an election. And so these news executives, again, especially on television, which is so ratings dependent, theyā€™ve got a problem. So after presumably learning all these lessons about journalism and how to confront power, thereā€™s a first subtle and then much less subtle rethinking.

Maybe we need to pull back from that approach. And maybe we need to take some new lessons and switch it up a little bit and reverse some of what we did. And one of the best examples of this is none other than CNN.

It had come under new management, was being led by a guy named Chris Licht, a veteran of cable news, but also Stephen Colbertā€™s late night show in his last job. And his new job under this new management is weā€™re going to recalibrate a little bit. So Chris Licht proceeds to try to bring the network back to the center.

And how does he do that?

Well, we see some key personalities who represented the Trump combat era start losing air time and some of them lose their jobs. Thereā€™s talk of, we want more Republicans on the air. There was a famous magazine article about Chris Lichtā€™s balancing act here.

And Chris Licht says to a reporter, Tim Alberta of the ā€œAtlanticā€ magazine, look, a lot in the media, including at his own network, quote unquote, ā€œput on a jersey, took a side.ā€ They took a side. And he says, I think we understand that jersey cannot go back on him. Because he says in the end of the day, by the way, it didnā€™t even work. We didnā€™t change anyoneā€™s mind.

Heā€™s saying that confrontational approach that defined the four years Trump was in office, that was a reaction to the feeling that TV news had failed to properly treat Trump with sufficient skepticism, that that actually was a failure both of journalism and of the TV news business. Is that what heā€™s saying?

Yeah. On the business side, itā€™s easier call, right? You want a bigger audience, and youā€™re not getting the bigger audience. But heā€™s making a journalistic argument as well that if the job is to convey the truth and take it to the people, and they take that into account as they make their own voting decisions and formulate their own opinions about American politics, if tens of millions of people who do believe that election was stolen are completely tuning you out because now they see you as a political combatant, youā€™re not achieving your ultimate goal as a journalist.

And what does Lichtā€™s ā€œdonā€™t put a jersey back onā€ approach look like on CNN for its viewers?

Well, It didnā€™t look good. People might remember this, but the most glaring example ā€”

Please welcome, the front runner for the Republican nomination for president, Donald Trump.

ā€” was when he held a town hall meeting featuring Donald J. Trump, now candidate Trump, before an audience packed with Trumpā€™s fans.

You look at what happened during that election. Unless youā€™re a very stupid person, you see what happens. A lot of the people ā€”

Trump let loose a string of falsehoods.

Most people understand what happened. It was a rigged election.

The audience is pro-Trump audience, was cheering him on.

Are you ready? Are you ready? Can I talk?

Yeah, whatā€™s your answer?

Can I? Do you mind?

I would like for you to answer the question.

OK. Itā€™s very simple to answer.

Thatā€™s why I asked it.

Itā€™s very simple. Youā€™re a nasty person, Iā€™ll tell you that.

And during, the CNN anchor hosting this, Kaitlan Collins, on CNNā€™s own air, it was a disaster.

It felt like a callback to the unlearned lessons of 2016.

Yeah. And in this case, CNNā€™s staff was up in arms.

Big shakeup in the cable news industry as CNN makes another change at the top.

Chris Licht is officially out at CNN after a chaotic run as chairman and CEO.

And Chris Licht didnā€™t survive it.

The chief executiveā€™s departure comes as he faced criticism in recent weeks after the network hosted a town hall with Donald Trump and the networkā€™s ratings started to drop.

But I want to say that the CNN leadership still, even after that, as they brought new leadership in, said, this is still the path weā€™re going to go on. Maybe that didnā€™t work out, but weā€™re still here. This is still what we have to do.

Right. And this idea is very much in the water of TV news, that this is the right overall direction.

Yeah. This is, by no means, isolated to CNN. This is throughout the traditional news business. These conversations are happening everywhere. But CNN was living it at that point.

And this, of course, is how we get to NBC deciding to hire Ronna McDaniel.

Right. Because theyā€™re picking up ā€” right where that conversation leaves off, theyā€™re having the same conversation. But for NBC, you could argue this tension between journalistic values and audience. Itā€™s even more pressing. Because even though MSNBC is a niche cable network, NBC News is part of an old-fashioned broadcast network. Itā€™s on television stations throughout the country.

And in fact, those networks, they still have 6:30 newscasts. And believe it or not, millions of people still watch those every night. Maybe not as many as they used to, but thereā€™s still some six or seven million people tuning in to nightly news. Thatā€™s important.

Right. We should say that kind of number is sometimes double or triple that of the cable news prime time shows that get all the attention.

On their best nights. So this is big business still. And that business is based on broad ā€” itā€™s called broadcast for a reason. Thatā€™s based on broad audiences. So NBC had a business imperative, and they argue they had a journalistic imperative.

So given all of that, Jim, I think the big messy question here is, when it comes to NBC, did they make a tactical error around hiring the wrong Republican which blew up? Or did they make an even larger error in thinking that the way you handle Trump and his supporters is to work this hard to reach them, when they might not even be reachable?

The best way to answer that question is to tell you what theyā€™re saying right now, NBC management. What the management saying is, yes, this was a tactical error. This was clearly the wrong Republican. We get it.

But theyā€™re saying, we are going to ā€” and they said this in their statement, announcing that they were severing ties with McDaniel. They said, weā€™re going to redouble our efforts to represent a broad spectrum of the American votership. And thatā€™s what they meant was that weā€™re going to still try to reach these Trump voters with people who can relate to them and they can relate to.

But the question is, how do you even do that when so many of his supporters believe a lie? How is NBC, how is CNN, how are any of these TV networks, if they have decided that this is their mission, how are they supposed to speak to people who believe something fundamentally untrue as a core part of their political identity?

Thatā€™s the catch-22. How do you get that Trump movement person whoā€™s also an insider, when the litmus test to be an insider in the Trump movement is to believe in the denialism or at least say you do? So thatā€™s a real journalistic problem. And the thing that we havenā€™t really touched here is, what are these networks doing day in and day out?

Theyā€™re not producing reported pieces, which I think itā€™s a little easier. You just report the news. You go out into the world. You talk to people, and then you present it to the world as a nuanced portrait of the country. This thing is true. This thing is false. Again, in many cases, pretty straightforward. But their bread and butter is talking heads. Itā€™s live. Itā€™s not edited. Itā€™s not that much reported.

So their whole business model especially, again, on cable, which has 24 hours to fill, is talking heads. And if you want the perspective from the Trump movement, journalistically, especially when it comes to denialism, but when it comes to some other major subjects in American life, youā€™re walking into a place where theyā€™re going to say things that arenā€™t true, that donā€™t pass your journalistic standards, the most basic standards of journalism.

Right. So youā€™re saying if TV sticks with this model, the kind of low cost, lots of talk approach to news, then they are going to have to solve the riddle of who to bring on, who represents Trumpā€™s America if they want that audience. And now theyā€™ve got this red line that theyā€™ve established, that that person canā€™t be someone who denies the 2020 election reality. But like you just said, thatā€™s the litmus test for being in Trumpā€™s orbit.

So this doesnā€™t really look like a conundrum. This looks like a bit of a crisis for TV news because it may end up meaning that they canā€™t hire that person that they need for this model, which means that perhaps a network like NBC does need to wave goodbye to a big segment of these viewers and these eyeballs who support Trump.

I mean, on the one hand, they are not ready to do that, and they would never concede that thatā€™s something theyā€™re ready to do. The problem is barring some kind of change in their news model, thereā€™s no solution to this.

But why bar changes to their news model, I guess, is the question. Because over the years, itā€™s gotten more and more expensive to produce news, the news that Iā€™m talking about, like recorded packages and what we refer to as reporting. Just go out and report the news.

Donā€™t gab about it. Just whatā€™s going on, whatā€™s true, whatā€™s false. Thatā€™s actually very expensive in television. And they donā€™t have the kind of money they used to have. So the talking heads is their way to do programming at a level where they can afford it.

They do some packages. ā€œ60 Minutesā€ still does incredible work. NBC does packages, but the lionā€™s share of what they do is what weā€™re talking about. And thatā€™s not going to change because the economics arenā€™t there.

So then a final option, of course, to borrow something Chris Licht said, is that a network like NBC perhaps doesnā€™t put a jersey on, but accepts the reality that a lot of the world sees them wearing a jersey.

Yeah. I mean, nobody wants to be seen as wearing a jersey in our business. No one wants to be wearing a jersey on our business. But maybe what they really have to accept is that weā€™re just sticking to the true facts, and that may look like weā€™re wearing a jersey, but weā€™re not. And that may, at times, look like itā€™s lining up more with the Democrats, but weā€™re not.

If Trump is lying about a stolen election, thatā€™s not siding against him. Thatā€™s siding for the truth, and thatā€™s what weā€™re doing. Easier said than done. And I donā€™t think any of these concepts are new.

I think there have been attempts to do that, but itā€™s the world theyā€™re in. And itā€™s the only option they really have. Weā€™re going to tell you the truth, even if it means that weā€™re going to lose a big part of the country.

Well, Jim, thank you very much.

Thank you, Michael.

Hereā€™s what else you need to know today.

[PROTESTERS CHANTING]

Over the weekend, thousands of protesters took to the streets of Tel Aviv and Jerusalem in some of the largest domestic demonstrations against the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu since Israel invaded Gaza in the fall.

[NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]

Some of the protesters called on Netanyahu to reach a cease fire deal that would free the hostages taken by Hamas on October 7. Others called for early elections that would remove Netanyahu from office.

During a news conference on Sunday, Netanyahu rejected calls for early elections, saying they would paralyze his government at a crucial moment in the war.

Ronna McDanielā€™s time at NBC was short. The former Republican National Committee chairwoman was hired as an on-air political commentator but released just days later after an on-air revolt by the networkā€™s leading stars.

Jim Rutenberg, a writer at large for The Times, discusses the saga and what it might reveal about the state of television news heading into the 2024 presidential race.

On todayā€™s episode

Background reading

Ms. McDanielā€™s appointment had been immediately criticized by reporters at the network and by viewers on social media.

The former Republican Party leader tried to downplay her role in efforts to overturn the 2020 election. A review of the record shows she was involved in some key episodes .
