Air Travel Got You Down? Luxury Buses Ramp Up Style and Comfort

Bus travel is being reinvented to feel more like first class.

the interior of a vonlane bus

Veronica Stoddart,

The expense and hassles of air travel have many people turning instead to the open road. But hours behind the wheel can be exhausting. There is another way: You can take a bus.

In fact, several lines have set out to prove that bus travel doesn’t have to be cramped and uncomfortable. They feature amenities you might find in first-class plane cabins, such as plush reclining seats; abundant space between rows; free internet, TV and movies; foldout tables; free snacks and drinks; onboard attendants and even private mini-suites with lie-flat beds.

The Jet , a bus service that launched in 2021, connecting Washington, D.C., and New York City ($99–$199 one way), is a good example. Just 19 passengers sit in rows 6 feet apart, a spaciousness that is rare for bus travel. The reclining seats are made with gel and memory foam and something called motion-canceling technology that makes the highway ride feel more smooth. “It really is a game changer, especially for seniors,” says founder and CEO Chad Scarborough. “It eliminates all the bumps and motion sickness. We had a passenger with sciatica, and she only travels with us now.”

One more breakthrough is enhanced Wi-Fi, billed as the fastest in mass transit, which lets you stream away while an attendant serves free snacks, soft drinks, beer and wine. Scarborough says frustration with plane travel helped create the opportunity for luxury bus service: “We tried to eliminate every pain point — no crowded stations, no long security lines, no waiting in line at all.”

With a plan to launch a D.C.-New York-Boston route early next year, Napaway boasts flat-sleeper buses with convertible private “pods.”

“Driving yourself is fatiguing, and you can’t get anything else done,” says founder and CEO Daniel Aronov. “Flying takes at least five to six hours door-to-door for even a short journey, with security, delays, crowds. The regular bus is crowded, and trains can be expensive.” What’s more, says Aronov, bus travel is relatively green.

Other lines providing a premium experience with fewer, more comfortable seats include RedCoach , serving 14 cities in Florida and eight in Texas; and Vonlane, serving five cities in Texas, plus Atlanta, Nashville and Memphis.

For most travelers, a city-to-city bus journey is the lowest option on the transportation ladder. Buses are usually dirty and crowded, get stuck in traffic, bump and sway, and are slow. They’re for those on a budget, only—but that may be quickly changing, thanks to sleeper buses.

Greyhound and MegaBus express options have long serviced much of the country with low, advance-purchase fares that are sometimes faster, and typically much cheaper, than Amtrak—although both set an admittedly low bar. Most trips offer onboard bathrooms, Wi-Fi, seating in pairs, electrical outlets, and little legroom or seat width to work with.

But not all buses are like that now. New bus lines operating luxury or lie-flat sleeper buses offer accommodations and services far beyond what Amtrak, airlines, or other bus lines can.

Sleeper Buses: “Moving Hotels”

travel lux bus

A new service called Cabin is offering lie-flat sleeper buses overnight between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Trips in either direction leave at 11:00 p.m. and arrive at about 7:00 a.m., give or take traffic. Cabin’s sleeper buses feature cubicles on each side of an aisle, stacked two high and equipped with full foam mattresses and bedding. Cubicles are 75 inches long, 25 inches high, and 26 to 31 inches wide, with individually controlled air conditioning, electrical outlets, privacy light shades, and USB ports. Vertical space is so limited that all you can do in one is lie back and maybe read a little or work on a computer or tablet. If you want to be more vertical, Cabin’s buses also have small lounge areas for use before/after sleeping. Cabin buses, which it calls “moving hotels,” also provide onboard snacks, a restroom, and Wi-Fi. The fare is $115 each way.

A contributor to the blog The Points Guy tried Cabin, and found everything to be shipshape and as advertised. He also found, however, that sleeping wasn’t easy due to constant highway curves and bumps.

When a Sleeper Bus Is Worth It

Paying $115 for a trip you can make on Southwest for less than $50 doesn’t initially sound like an attractive value proposition. But the $115 bus fare covers an overnight accommodation that would likely cost you at least $100 in either Los Angeles or San Francisco. In fact, Cabin is re-creating what was once a very common travel model, especially among business travelers before the 1950s: Leave a city late evening, climb aboard a sleeping car on a train, and arrive at your destination the next morning in time for another day’s business. For the most part, Amtrak doesn’t run trains like that anymore, although a few overnight segments on Amtrak’s long haul routes allow similar schedules in limited cases. Amtrak’s single daily Los Angeles to San Francisco trip, however, is by day.

You can identify dozens of routes where the Cabin concept would be feasible, at least from a scheduling standpoint. Whether the concept will succeed as a product concept, however, remains an open question.

Luxury Bus Options

Lots of bus companies install leather seats into what would otherwise be a conventional bus arrangement and call it “luxury.” By my measure, however, a true luxury bus has roomier seating, with only three total seats per row—two on one side of the aisle, one on the other—and extended legroom. Here are several lines that meet that standard:

  • LimoLiner runs several daily round-trips between Boston and New York. Trips take just over four hours, which is essentially the same time as Amtrak’s Northeast Regional trains and about a half hour slower than the Acela Express. Fares start at $79, which is higher than Amtrak’s starting point of $49 on Northeast Regionals, but cheaper than Acela’s $120. LimoLiners offer Wi-Fi, mobile phone service, snacks or a light meal, an onboard restroom, and an attendant.
  • Vonlane runs a similar service linking Dallas, Ft. Worth, Austin, Houston, and San Antonio, plus College Station for football games. Dallas to Houston trips take three hours, 45 minutes, with fares starting at $100 each way. As with LimoLiner, flying may be cheaper and faster, but slightly less convenient.
  • RedCoach has a first class bus option on routes linking Miami with Tallahassee via either Orlando or Tampa. Miami to Tallahassee fares start at $67 each way. There’s no Amtrak service to Tallahassee, and the first class bus fare is less than half of what you’d pay to fly—making this option a worthwile one.
  • Vamoose Bus Gold Buses operate several daily trips each way between New York City and the Washington, D.C. area (Bethesda, Arlington, or Lorton). One-way fares start at $40: A lot less than Amtrak or flying.

Go luxe or stay budget: Comparing New York's newest luxury bus with an economy competitor

Andrew Kunesh

Editor's Note

Editor's note: This post has been updated to reflect that there are 14 seats on The Jet, not 16 as previously reported.

There's no shortage of ways to get from New York City to Washington, D.C. While we can (and often do) debate the best ways to make that well-worn, 230-mile trip, there's very little debate when it comes to determining which transportation method is generally the most cost-efficient. That distinction, without question, belongs to the bus.

Before you click away and decide the bus is too lowbrow for you, hear us out — you may be surprised by at least one of the options.

There are dozens of bus operators that can whisk you between two of America's most important cities, but not all are created equal. As with anything in the travel world, you typically get what you pay for when it comes to buses. Right now, that can mean spending as little as $20 for a standard bus ticket with FlixBus or Greyhound or $99 one-way for a trip with The Jet, a new luxury bus line.

If you are going to keep things simple and take ground transportation between the Big Apple and our nation's capital, you may be wondering if it's worth paying up for a luxury experience on such a short jump down the East Coast. Fortunately, TPG is here to help.

TPG associate web publisher Kevin Martinez and I set out last month to find out if the higher cost of The Jet is worth the splurge.

In total, we took a combined four methods of transportation on the round-trip journey between New York and D.C. But in this guide, we'll specifically look at the first leg of our trip from New York to D.C.

Here's how two of New York's newest bus options — The Jet and FlixBus — compare to one another.

Get the latest points, miles and travel news by signing up for TPG's free daily newsletter .

Luxury: The Jet

There have been many attempts to make luxury buses work in the U.S., but seemingly none have stuck.

The fact that The Jet launched during a global pandemic and has already made it this far is impressive. I was excited to give the bus a try for this trip down the coast.

The Jet does New York pickups in Hudson Yards on 33rd Street. I had some time to kill before my bus would hit the road, so I walked around Hudson Yards and grabbed a hot dog from the Hebrew National food cart down the street. It wasn't a terrible spot to pass the time.

travel lux bus

As I approached the bus, its clean paint job really stood out.

travel lux bus

Boarding was quick. I was asked to show proof of vaccination (which is no longer required, as of July 1) and my boarding pass upon entry. I was traveling light with a backpack, so I didn't need to store a bag beneath the bus.

Once on board, I immediately found myself impressed by the clean interior. It was a welcome change from the bus seat patterns we're all used to.

There are faux-wood floors, leather-upholstered seats and massive windows that let you take in the views from the interstate. The seats are spaced pretty far apart, which looks awkward but makes for a very comfortable ride.

There are only 14 total seats on the entire bus, giving it a professional-yet-peaceful vibe.

travel lux bus

I quickly settled into my window seat, and the friendly bus attendant asked me if it was my first time riding The Jet. Upon confirming it indeed was, she gave a quick overview of how the seat controls worked. They're wedged between the side of the bus and the seat and let you adjust the recline and footrest.

As I soon discovered, these are anything but old bus seats.

The Jet has outfitted the bus with "motion-canceling" seats — dubbed HoverSeats — that are active on the highway. Similar to how noise-canceling headphones counteract ambient noise, The Jet's seats counteract movement to make you feel like you're sitting still.

It's a bit jarring when they first turn on, but they prove to be very comfortable for sleeping or when you want to work on a laptop. Additionally, each seat is equipped with power outlets and USB ports.

travel lux bus

There's a tiny table that pops out of the armrest. While I initially thought the small size would be an issue, as the table is smaller than my 16-inch MacBook Pro, I found that the grippy plastic coating and ability to tilt the table forward made it surprisingly functional. I was able to very comfortably type throughout the journey, even while the bus was in motion.

travel lux bus

The bus left right on time, and we quickly made our way to the Lincoln Tunnel and New Jersey Turnpike. Once on the turnpike, the seat's motion-canceling function was activated. Then, the bus attendant came around to offer snacks and drinks.

The snack basket included brand-name items like Coca-Cola products, Nespresso coffee and a selection of beer and wine. The beer selection was basic, consisting of Modelo, Heineken and Heineken Light.

I sipped on a miniature can of Heineken and enjoyed a bag of chips and trail mix. There were also healthier options like granola bars and apple chips on offer.

travel lux bus

Everything is covered by the $99 fare, and you can ask for more refreshments whenever you'd like. Or, you can just head to the kitchen at the back of the bus to serve yourself.

travel lux bus

The bus's Wi-Fi is excellent and better than any train, bus or plane Wi-Fi I've experienced in recent years.

My speed test showed a download speed of a little less than 95.7 Mbps and an upload speed of around 10.9 Mbps. This is more than enough to stream movies, upload files or perform other business computing tasks.

travel lux bus

The last awesome perk of riding The Jet is actually the bathroom. Bus bathrooms are generally known to be, well, disgusting, but this was not the case on The Jet. It looked more like a boutique hotel bathroom, offering brass finishes and white subway tiles. Best of all: It was cleaned frequently throughout the journey.

travel lux bus

As for the overall vibe of the bus, it was quiet and peaceful. No one talked on a cellphone or had a loud conversation at any point. Many riders — myself included — were working on laptops during the drive. In many ways, it felt similar to riding in an Amtrak train's quiet car or a commuter train.

I also loved the fact that there were only 14 people on the bus, which made the whole experience feel exclusive and — dare I say — kind of luxurious.

travel lux bus

We made it to D.C. 20 minutes ahead of schedule. The bus dropped us off near downtown's Metro Center station, putting us within easy reach of all major Metro lines and plenty of cafes and restaurants. I quickly got off the bus and walked to the Metro Center station to take the Metro to my hotel.

travel lux bus

Overall, I am very impressed by The Jet.

The HoverSeat, clean bathroom, speedy Wi-Fi and attentive service made the roughly four-hour journey actually enjoyable, and I wouldn't hesitate to take it to Philadelphia or Boston from New York if service is later expanded. I think it's well worth the added cost for the extra space and comfort, especially if you're someone like me who generally despises long bus rides.

Economy: FlixBus

Unlike Andrew, I started my journey by taking the subway to Penn Station. When I arrived, I still had to walk about three blocks from the 34th Street station to the corner of 31st Street and Eighth Avenue, my bus's departure point. I eventually found the rows of green and orange buses with signs next to them indicating where they were heading and what times they were departing — though it was admittedly kind of confusing to figure out.

As I made my way toward one of the buses, a bus driver pointed me in the right direction, as I almost made the rookie mistake of getting on the wrong bus heading to Philadelphia, which would've been ... not great.

I was lost in a maze of FlixBuses and had to ask for some help, making for a less-than-ideal start.

The same bus driver didn't point me in the direction of a FlixBus but rather a white Eastern Bus, which was serving as a partner bus for FlixBus for this specific route. So despite my plans to ride a FlixBus for this test, I ultimately ended up experiencing one of its partner buses. These operate much like a regional airline assists larger carriers.

travel lux bus

I placed my small duffel bag under the bus and waved goodbye to my belongings, not having access to them again until I arrived in D.C.

As I waited in line to hop on the bus, I had to pull out my FlixBus ticket, which I had handy on my phone via a QR code — you can print it, too, if you prefer a hard copy. I showed the bus driver my QR code, and he scanned it before letting me pass. I then took my seat at 6A.

Luckily for me, no one was seated next to me, so I was able to secure a small row to myself.

As I sat down and got comfortable, I started playing around with the seat itself and took a look at the overhead storage, which was pretty sizable. I was able to lean back without bothering my back-seat neighbor.

travel lux bus

Once settled in, I connected to the bus's Wi-Fi. Although I was able to connect, the speed was not great. I could stream music and send messages, but I couldn't do anything beyond that. Stick to cellular data if you want to stream Netflix or do more than send a few messages.

Around halfway through the four-hour journey, the bus stopped at the Biden Welcome Center just outside Wilmington, Delaware. The bus driver made a general announcement indicating that we would be stopping for 20 minutes. As someone who gets antsy on long car rides, I was relieved to be able to step outside and walk around for a bit.

Once we hit the road again, traffic began to pick up, especially as we approached the D.C. metro area. Traffic is common in and around D.C., so I expected we'd encounter some congestion as we neared the end of our trip.

Before long, the bus pulled into the FlixBus stop near Union Station, I retrieved my bag from the bottom of the bus and I started exploring all that the nation's capital had to offer.

Overall, I would say my experience on the FlixBus was pretty good. While I didn't technically ride in a FlixBus, the experience was pretty similar to what you can expect on a mainline FlixBus, from what I've heard.

For a bus ride down to D.C. from New York City, it was very reasonably priced compared to other alternatives. I couldn't believe I could get to D.C. for just $22.

Bottom line

For these shorter journeys, don't discount the bus.

It's a good bargain compared to a flight — not to mention, you get to skip the hassles that come with going in and out of airports. Economy airline tickets on this route usually cost $125 to $200 each way, and if you need more space in first class, you'll be paying even more than that. So, even if you go with the luxury bus option, you're still probably paying less to drive than to fly.

FlixBus and The Jet are convenient transportation options for getting between New York City and Washington, D.C. Both start and end in city centers, so you can continue on to your final destination without adding an expensive (and sometimes time-consuming) Uber or Lyft.

Both got the job done during our test, though we think it's well worth the extra money to upgrade to The Jet if your budget allows. The added comfort and amenities make the journey truly enjoyable.

If you have work to do, you'll especially appreciate traveling via The Jet, as the internet is faster than on any other mode of transportation I've tested recently. The seats actually make it easier to type on a laptop, too, so you won't fall behind despite the change of scenery.

Goodbye Planes, Trains and Automobiles. Hello, Luxury Bus?

Start-up travel companies are hoping more Americans will embrace the concept of sleeper and luxury coaches. Just don’t call them buses.

The black and light brown interior of a bus with seats that have been reconfigured for sleeping passengers. A man wearing a black baseball cap and sunglasses is lying down; a woman in a blue T-shirt is sitting, head down, looking at a lit-up device.

By Maria Cramer

John Rosenberg found a last-minute flight for $200 last month from Washington, D.C., to Nashville to see Pearl Jam. But flights home were $600 and there was no easy way to take the train.

Mr. Rosenberg started searching for buses online. He stumbled on Napaway , a company that promised premium overnight accommodations on an 18-passenger bus with seats that fold into a flat bed and come with a pillow and plush blanket.

The week before, Mr. Rosenberg and his friends had spent 18 hours at Midway Airport in Chicago after they were bounced off their connecting flight to Washington. He spent the night cold and slept a total of 45 minutes in the airport chapel before security kicked him out.

The Napaway, Mr. Rosenberg reasoned, could not be worse. And at least he would be traveling, not waiting.

He booked the flight to Nashville and a ticket home on the Napaway for $125.

“My friends were all making fun of me,” Mr. Rosenberg, 47, said. “You’re going to spend 11 hours on a luxury bus?”

On a Sunday night, after spending the weekend in Nashville, Mr. Rosenberg joined five other passengers, including me, on the Napaway, which in June began taking travelers back and forth from Washington to Nashville.

The company, and other premium bus companies like it, are betting that Americans will abandon the image of the rumbling, cramped bus as the transport of last resort for the cash-strapped and embrace long-haul coach travel.

Giant sleeper buses have been a staple of travel in parts of Latin America and Asia for decades. But in the United States, the concept has never taken hold, despite our vast highway system. Around 2017, Cabin, a two-story bus with beds tucked into private pods , began taking passengers from Los Angeles to San Francisco for overnight trips, but stopped in 2020. Gaetano Crupi, the founder of Cabin, declined to comment on why the service ended.

More successful have been high-end coach services that offer shorter journeys, like Red Coach , Vonlane and the Jet , a 14-seat bus that ferries people from Metro Center in Washington to Hudson Yards in Manhattan.

They advertise seats that recline far back, high-speed Wi-Fi and a feeling that even though you’re technically on an intercity bus, you are on a refined, affordably priced journey, said Andisheh Ranjbari, an assistant professor of travel behavior at Penn State.

“You don’t see the word bus anywhere in the advertisements,” she said. “They say it’s a first-class luxury experience.”

Napaway is the only “fully flat” sleeper bus in the country, said Dan Aronov, the company’s founder and chief executive. He is aware that many travelers may be skeptical of taking a 10- to 11-hour bus ride when a flight from Washington to Nashville takes less than two hours.

He responds by pointing out how miserable the airport experience can be. Flying is faster, but a passenger will still spend several hours getting to the airport, going through security and then waiting at the gate. And that is assuming a flight is not delayed, Mr. Aronov said.

Contrast that experience with traveling while lying on a memory foam mattress pad and snuggling under a blanket, he said.

“You were going to spend seven to eight hours asleep,” Mr. Aronov said. “Now you’re just doing it in motion.”

‘A private jet experience’

Ironically, it was companies like Megabus and BoltBus, which offered $1 rides and curbside pickup in the early part of the 2000s, that paved the way for premium coach travel, said Joseph Schwieterman, professor of public service at DePaul University in Chicago and director of the Chaddick Institute for Metropolitan Development, which studies intercity bus travel.

Those companies renewed interest in intercity bus travel and spurred more innovation and investment, he said.

Now, as train service remains elusive in much of the South and air travel continues to frustrate travelers, it is possible the “stars have aligned” for premium coach travel, Professor Schwieterman said.

Premium coach lines have significantly fewer overhead costs than rail and especially airlines, which have much higher fuel costs and need a “small army” of employees to operate, he said.

By contrast, a premium bus requires a crew of one to two drivers and perhaps one attendant, which means that even if a company sells fewer than half of its seats on a trip, it can still cover its costs, so long as it does not lower fares to compete with conventional bus lines, Professor Schwieterman said.

Mia Reed, a singer from Brooklyn who found trains too costly and airplanes inconvenient, said she was eager to find a luxury bus that would take her to visit her parents in Fredericksburg, Va., after having “nightmare” experiences on other bus rides.

Ms. Reed, 29, said she learned about the Jet on Instagram and TikTok, where videos showed wide seats, powered by “motion-canceling technology.”

Booking online was easy, and the Jet was “beautiful” and “a little bit better organized” than an ordinary bus, Ms. Reed said. An attendant came by frequently during the four-hour trip to check on passengers and pass out snacks, coffee, wine and soda.

“It’s meant to feel like a private jet experience,” said Chad Scarborough, the company’s founder and chief executive. “Hence the name the Jet.”

Still, buses have a tricky place in the American imagination. Weird Al Yankovic warned us of them in “Another One Rides the Bus,” his parody of Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust.” In movies, more often than not, they are used as settings to show the protagonists at their most annoyed , imperiled or dead . When I told relatives that I would be riding an overnight bus to Nashville, one of them suggested I carry a pocketknife.

I arrived in Washington on Friday to catch the Napaway with my friend Theresa.

We found the bus at 9:30 p.m. at the designated meeting spot — a well-lit parking lot on L Street NE near the Wunder Garten, an outdoor beer garden where Miley Cyrus’s “Party in the U.S.A.” blared from the speakers and the sound of laughter wafted over the fence.

We were joined by three other passengers: Ammie Conner, an 80-year-old retiree who was visiting her grandson in Nashville; Guillerma Saltano, a shy, 50-year-old woman from the Dominican Republic; and Catherine Lee, a 50-year-old graduate student studying social work.

We gawked at the bus, an enormous black coach with a galaxy of stars painted on the side. Inside, there were 36 seats, two for each passenger, that convert into flat, sort of S-shaped beds.

Ms. Conner, who sky-dived for the first time at 70 and went zip lining at 80, said she booked the bus “for the novelty of it.”

She said when she told a friend about the bus, the friend replied, “‘What a great idea for a bachelorette party.’” But rowdy partygoers run counter to the ethos of the Napaway, which asks passengers to refrain from loud talking or playing their devices out loud.

No one under 8 can ride the Napaway, said Mr. Aronov. The Jet, which charges fares starting at $99 for a one-way ticket, has an age minimum of 6.

“I’m very sympathetic to parents,” Mr. Aronov said. “But right now, for the comfort of the other passengers, we have an age minimum.”

Mr. Aronov, 29, said he chose Nashville because it’s a busy urban hub popular with tourists in an area of the country with few public transit options.

Mr. Aronov, an Oxford University graduate who worked at Barclays Investment Bank and Loews Corp., said he started Napaway with the help of “individual” investors, not large institutions. He declined to say how much it cost to start Napaway but said the company is not breaking even yet.

“It’s a new concept and it takes time for the word to get out,” Mr. Aronov said.

He is hoping to add more routes — passengers have requested trips from Washington to Atlanta, New York and Boston. The bus has added stops in Knoxville on the Washington-Nashville route and in November will add Wednesday and Thursday to the weekly schedule.

Travelers have ranged in ages from 9 to 93, Mr. Aronov said.

Mr. Aronov joined us on my trip — he said he tries to ride the Napaway as much as possible. As the bus pulled away, he described how to lower the seats and pull down the black privacy screen. Each passenger received a sleep mask, toothpaste and a small toothbrush, ear plugs, and a disposable towelette.

Ms. Saltano struggled with her privacy screen and Mr. Aronov rushed to help her. She burrowed under her blanket, looked at her phone for a few minutes, then quickly fell asleep.

I lowered my seats, laid the mattress down, curled into the fetal position and drifted off to sleep, wondering if someone over 6 feet tall would be as comfortable. (Mr. Aronov said the beds are long enough that anyone up to 6 foot 4 inches tall should be able to lie flat without having to curl up their knees.)

I woke up briefly at 2 a.m. If anyone was snoring, I could not hear it over the soft whirring of the engine and the rumbling wheels. The bus jostled, but the rocking motion was lulling. As I drifted back to sleep, I imagined this was how a baby nestled in a carriage feels.

I awoke at 7, surprised by how refreshed I felt.

The bus dropped us off in downtown Nashville, where my friend and I spent about 36 hours — plenty of time to visit the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum and RCA Studio B , catch live music at Rudy’s Jazz Room , and overeat at Biscuit Love , Peg Leg Porker and Monell’s .

I met Mr. Rosenberg, the Pearl Jam fan, on the ride back to Washington, where we were joined by Ms. Conner, Ms. Lee and Mr. Aronov.

The trip home was as peaceful as the trip down. An accident on Interstate 81 created a five-mile backup around 5 a.m., delaying our arrival by about an hour.

No one seemed annoyed.

“I would go anywhere on this bus,” Ms. Conner said, as she stretched and rose from her seat.

Mr. Rosenberg said he slept well — about four hours, a typical night’s sleep for him.

“This was fantastic,” he told Mr. Aronov as he stepped off the bus and shook his hand. “Most comfortable I’ve ever been on a bus.”

I asked Mr. Rosenberg if he would ride the Napaway again.

Yes, he said, but only if a one-way plane ticket cost more than $300.

Tickets on the Napaway start at $125 each way. The Napaway travels from Washington to Nashville, with stops in Knoxville. It currently leaves only on Friday (with plans to add Wednesday and Thursday) at 10 p.m. from 180 L St NE in Washington and arrives in Nashville at 8 a.m. Central time the following day. The bus will drop you off at 421 Rep. John Lewis Way N, about half a mile from Broadway.

The Napaway leaves Nashville on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. and, barring unforeseen traffic, returns to Washington the following day at 7:30 a.m. If you have time before meeting the bus and feel like spending $15 to $18 on a cocktail, stop for a drink at Skull’s Rainbow Room , a bar and restaurant with friendly, skilled bartenders that is a 7-minute walk from Napaway’s meeting spot.

There are no snacks on the Napaway, though every passenger gets a bottle of water. The bus has free Wi-Fi fast enough to stream Netflix or Hulu on your own device. Napaway offers a free online library of movies like “The Joker” and “Ratatouille.”

There is a bathroom on board, but it is tiny, so wear clothes you are comfortable sleeping in or use your privacy screen to get changed at your own seat. The bus stops twice briefly, once for pickup and drop-off in Knoxville and for roadside rest stops. The hope, said Mr. Aronov, is you won’t notice because “you’ll be fast asleep.”

Can I change my travel plans?

There is no fee to modify a reservation but you may be subject to a fare difference if modified to a date less than seven days from your date of modification. Please note, trips modified inside 2 hours of a departure can only be modified once and are no longer eligible for future travel credits or modifications. You can login to your account at vonlane.com to modify trips departing greater than two hours in the future or call, chat online, or email your modification request to [email protected] . If you simply cancel your existing trip and purchase a new trip, your credit card will be charged for a second booking. Your cancellation will be governed by our normal cancellation policy which may result in a loss of fare or an issuance of Vonlane credit only.

Can I receive a refund?

Yes, all Vonlane tickets are fully refundable as long as you cancel 24 hours prior to the first leg of your trip. Tickets cancelled inside of 24 hours and prior to 2 hours before the departure time are re-usable for future travel at a value equal to the original fare paid. Vonlane credit for cancelled trips expires and is removed from a passenger's account six months after the cancellation date. There is no refundable or re-usable value for a "no show" ticket. Tickets cancelled less than 2 hours prior to the trip departure time are non-cancellable and nonrefundable. Trips booked within 24 hours of departure are not refundable to the purchaser's credit card.

Are there other fees?

When traveling with Vonlane, the only additional fee you may incur is if you choose to park your personal vehicle. Our terminal locations offer parking fees that are competitive with typical airport parking fees; therefore, you can still plan to pay less overall for your entire trip.

Are there baggage restrictions?

In order to ensure all passengers are accommodated, please limit your luggage to 2 bags of 50 pounds or less and 1 carry-on bag.

Is there a restroom?

Yes, every Vonlane Passenger First motor coach has a full restroom for your convenience. Unlike the airlines, you won't be sharing it with more than 100 people. Our coaches only hold 22 passengers.

Can pets travel?

Small dogs, weighing less than 10 pounds , in a carry-case that can fit by a passenger's legs, are allowed on a Vonlane coach. The carry-case must be fully enclosed and the dog fully secured in the case. The case is not permitted on any table, seat, or in the coach aisle. The case, with dog inside, must remain quietly on the floor by the passenger’s feet throughout the trip. The carry-case must not impede the personal space of any other passenger, their seat, or leg rest. Dogs that cannot remain quietly in the carry-case should not be brought aboard and passengers with loud animals may be asked to disembark the coach at a rest area. This is strictly enforced by our attendants. Cats and other animals are not allowed aboard the motor coaches.

Service animals that are "trained to take a specific action when needed to assist the person with a disability" are allowed aboard without being in an animal carrier. All service animals must be harnessed and controlled by the passenger at all times. Vonlane adheres to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The ADA does not cover emotional support dogs. Therefore, emotional support dogs that cannot adhere to the pet policy above cannot travel aboard Vonlane. Hawaiian Explorer (8 Days)

We were told by Tour Radar that we could not plan “individual outings” before our trip. “Wait until you get there and your tour guide will help you”. At least that was my interpretation. So by the time we got to Hawaii a couple of the events we wanted to participate in were already booked. I was quite disappointed. Our plane was 3 hours late arriving so we never really met fellow travelers. It was the first tour I have been on where I did not know most of the participants. Our Director was awesome but overall this was an OK vacation. Service was great, Mother Nature provided lots of whales but so many things went wrong it will not go down as a memorable experience.

Very good trip. Tour guide and coach driver were excellent. Accommodations were great. I would recommend this trip to others. Except, I would not recommend going to the trip sponsored dinner at the Happy Girl Coffee House in Monterey. The food was just awful in my opinion. Best place for dinner that night would at one of the seafood restaurants at be Fisherman's Warf located right in back of the hotel.

Great tour guide, Michael M. Great hotels. Wish we had more time on the beach, for swim and that we would stop for photo op. Too bad for Maui fires, we would have loved to go to the other side of island- the stay in Kauea was hurried and rush/rush.
It was great. Tough schedule but I liked it.

I compared a $180 luxury bus to a $46 coach bus, and the expensive option was almost better than flying first-class

  • I rode on a $180 luxury bus and a $46 standard coach bus from New York City to Washington, DC.
  • The regular bus got me from point A to point B, but there weren't many amenities.
  • I was super impressed by the comfortable seats and the attendants on board The Jet.

As somebody who frequently travels between New York City and Washington, DC , I'm thankful for the many transportation options available.

Traditionally, planes are time savers, trains are the most comfortable , and buses are the most cost-effective. But there's another luxury option: The Jet.

As a true travel nerd, I had to see just how different this $180 bus service was from a traditional $46 FlixBus coach offering. Eleven hours of travel later and a notebook full of pros and cons, here's how the buses stacked up.

<p>Both buses had a similar seat configuration, with two seats on either side of the aisle.</p><p>But on the FlixBus, there were a lot more seats, leaving less room in between each row. </p>

The coach bus was almost exactly as I expected it to be.

On the FlixBus, there were two seats on either side of the aisle. But there were a lot more seats, leaving less room in between each row.

<p>Even though there were still four seats per row with an aisle in the middle, The Jet had significantly fewer seats.</p><p>Everything was spread out, giving every rider a lot of space. </p>

There was really no comparison when it came to comfort and space.

The Jet had three seats in each row with an aisle in the middle, but overall, it had significantly fewer seats than the standard coach.

Everything was spread out, giving every rider a lot more space.

<p>The seats on the standard coach bus were moderately sized.</p><p>They provided footrests and enough room to fit a backpack <a href="https://www.insider.com/jetblue-mint-business-class-first-class-dress-code-clothes-2023-7">under the seat in front of you</a>. </p>

I had just enough room for my things on the regular coach bus.

The seats on the standard coach bus were moderately sized.

They provided footrests and enough room to fit a backpack under the seat in front of you .

<p>The Jet provided a 45-degree seat recliner and pop-up leg rest. I had enough room to extend my legs without even being close to the chair in front of me, putting some <a href="https://www.insider.com/first-time-flying-first-class-emirates-review-photos-2022-2">first-class airline seats</a> to shame. </p><p>On top of the comfortable cushioning and lumbar support, the seat itself was designed with technology to help mask any uneasiness on the road. Subtle up-and-down motions gave the illusion of an incredibly smooth ride.</p><p>I wish airplane seats would adopt this feature to reduce the movement of unwanted turbulence.</p>

I couldn't believe how great the seats were on The Jet.

The Jet provided a 45-degree seat recliner and pop-up leg rest. I had enough room to extend my legs without even being close to the chair in front of me, putting some first-class airline seats to shame.

On top of the comfortable cushioning and lumbar support, the seat was designed with technology to help mask any uneasiness on the road. Subtle up-and-down motions gave the illusion of an incredibly smooth ride.

I wish airplane seats would adopt this feature to reduce the movement of unwanted turbulence.

<p>The coach bus provided straightforward service, getting you from point A to B.</p><p>Although there weren't many onboard amenities, there were at least convenient trash bags hanging on every aisle seat.</p>

The coach bus didn't have many amenities.

The coach bus provided straightforward service, getting you from point A to point B.

Although there weren't many amenities on board, there were at least convenient trash bags hanging on the aisle seats.

<p><a href="https://www.insider.com/photos-show-differences-between-flying-economy-business-class-2023-5">My favorite perk</a> was probably the onboard attendants.</p><p>They passed out hot towels at the beginning of the ride, served drinks, and cleaned up after us. One attendant even brought around Jet blankets to make my journey more comfortable. </p>

When paying more than $100 for a bus ticket, you hope for a few added perks, and The Jet delivered.

My favorite perk was probably the attendants on board.

They passed out hot towels at the beginning of the ride, served drinks, and cleaned up after us. One attendant even offered Jet blankets to make my journey more comfortable.

<p>I appreciated that there was a small restroom on the FlixBus. </p>

The bathroom on the regular bus wasn't fancy, but it was functional.

I appreciated the small restroom on the FlixBus.

<p>The restroom had a sink, counter space, backlit mirror lights, a full-length mirror, and enough space to change into something cozy for the ride.</p>

The Jet's amenities were exceptional for a bus.

The restroom had a sink, counter space, backlit mirror lights, a full-length mirror, and enough space to change into something cozy for the ride.

<p>Although there wasn't food on the FlixBus, we got a 15-minute rest-stop break where I picked up a bottle of water and a <a href="https://www.insider.com/which-coffee-chain-has-the-best-black-coffee-on-ice">Dunkin' iced coffee</a> to fuel me for the last three hours on the road. </p>

We made a rest stop on the regular bus to stretch our legs and refuel.

Although there wasn't food on the FlixBus, we got a 15-minute rest-stop break, where I picked up a bottle of water and a Dunkin' iced coffee to fuel me for the last three hours on the road.

<p>Each Jet ticket came with two complimentary alcoholic beverages (beer, wine, or seltzer) and a list of food items on sale for as little as $1.</p>

I was offered free drinks and cheap snacks on The Jet.

Each Jet ticket came with two complimentary alcoholic beverages, including beer, wine, or seltzer, and a list of food items on sale for as little as $1.

<p><a href="https://www.insider.com/worked-desk-job-from-disney-world-what-i-learned-2023-7">As a remote worker</a> who enjoys traveling, a mode of transportation with full internet access is essential. </p><p>Both buses were supposed to provide Wi-Fi, but FlixBus' service was down during my ride. Thankfully, the power plugs on board worked, and I was able to get my phone's hot spot to cooperate. </p>

Although both services promised WiFi, only one worked for me.

As a remote worker who enjoys traveling, it's essential that my mode of transportation has internet access.

The buses were supposed to provide WiFi, but FlixBus' service was down during my ride. Thankfully, the power plugs on board worked, and I used my phone's hot spot instead.

<p>The Jet's Wi-Fi worked, and the service speed was fast enough for my fiancé to stream movies while I uploaded and downloaded significant file-size assets to my computer. </p>

I was able to comfortably get some work done on The Jet.

The Jet's WiFi worked, and the service speed was fast enough for my fiancé to stream movies while I uploaded and downloaded significant file-size assets to my computer.

<p>When comparing <a href="https://www.insider.com/surprising-things-about-luxury-bus-ride-napaway-dc-to-nashville-2023-4">two bus services</a>, traffic is the great equalizer. Even though both departed right on time (A+ for punctuality), the 4 1/2-hour trip took over 5 1/2 hours in each direction.</p><p>If time is your biggest concern, I'd stick with a train or plane. But if you're a remote worker traveling during the day like me, The Jet may actually be the best option.</p><p>I think it was <a href="https://www.insider.com/luxury-private-suite-on-overnight-bus-napaway-review-photos-2023-3">definitely worth the price tag</a>. The fantastic service, luxurious seats, and strong internet connection made it the clear travel winner.</p>

Trains and planes are still probably the better option for most, but I'll splurge on The Jet if I'm riding the bus.

When comparing the bus services , traffic is the great equalizer. Even though the buses departed on time, the 4 ½-hour trip took more than 5 ½ hours in each direction.

If time is your biggest concern, I'd stick with a train or plane. But if you're a remote worker traveling during the day like me, The Jet may be the best option.

I think it was definitely worth the price tag . The fantastic service, luxurious seats, and strong internet connection made it the clear travel winner.

Correction: August 7, 2023 — An earlier version of this story misstated the number of seats in each row on the Jet bus. There are three, not four.

Tributes flow for Tia Cameron, 18, killed after bus mounts footpath in heart of Brisbane CBD

The mother of a young woman who was killed after a bus mounted a kerb and pinned her against a wall, has shared a heartbreaking message.

The mother of an 18-year-old woman who died in a tragic Brisbane peak hour crash has shared a heartbreaking tribute.

The teenager, identified as Tia Cameron, had just got her eyelashes done and was walking out of a nearby salon when a bus mounted the kerb and hit her from behind, according to the Courier Mail.

She tragically died on Friday night after the BCC bus pinned her against a wall at the ANZAC Square arcade building on Edward St, despite the best efforts of paramedics.

On Saturday, her mum, Karma Te Whaiti said her daughter had been “tragically stolen”.

“Yesterday our baby Tia Cameron grew her angel wings. Tragically stolen from us in a terrible bus accident in Brisbane city,” she wrote.

“Currently she lays with the coroners and will be released to us Monday. We will update in the coming days regarding Tia’s celebration of life.”

Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner also visited the crash site on Saturday alongside councillor Ryan Murphy, and laid down flowers at the growing memorial.

“What happened in Brisbane last night was a devastating tragedy. It has left our entire community in shock,” Mr Schrinner shared in a post on social media.

“To the family and friends of Tia Cameron who tragically lost her life, and to everyone impacted, the thoughts, prayers and hearts of Brisbane are with you.”

At least nine others were injured in the 5pm crash that sparked chaos and long traffic delays in the city centre.

It’s understood that the bus lost control and crashed into a light pole before mounting the kerb near the intersection of Adelaide Street.

Several passengers on board the bus were treated for soft tissue injuries and three were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

District Duty Officer Senior-Sergeant Steve Watterson told the Courier Mail the crash scene was “horrendous”.

“The bus has made a left turn from Ann into Edward and for reasons under investigation at this point in time to ascertain why it deviated left onto the footpath,” he said.

“All other passengers on the bus were assessed by QAS with three transported to hospital with very minor injuries.”

Queensland Ambulance Service operations supervisor Andrew Blumson described the crash as a confronting situation.

“Our officers are very well-trained, but these sorts of accidents don’t happen every day,” he said.

“We have very robust support services within the QAS and every single officer involved in these sorts of incidents will be followed up with.”

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the incident was “truly devastating”.

“My heart goes out to everyone impacted by this tragedy,” he said in a statement.

“Hearing this news has absolutely shocked me and I’m sure the entire Brisbane community will be feeling this tonight.

“None of us going about our daily lives ever expect anything like this.

“While we do not yet know the exact circumstances of what has happened, council will be working with Queensland Police Service who will investigate this heartbreaking incident.”

Premier Steven Miles also posted his condolences on Friday.

“I’m saddened to hear the news that a woman has died after a bus crash in Brisbane CBD this evening,” he said.

“Our thoughts go out to all those involved.”

A massive search operation for a swimmer who has gone missing at a Sydney beach will resume this morning.

A leading aviation expert believes MH370 is buried in the ‘perfect’ spot to make it impossible to find.

In 2005, a dead baby girl was found dumped in a bin at one of the busiest airports in the world. The person who did it has never been found – until now. WARNING: Distressing

Andrea bocelli sings 'happy birthday' to tmz celebrity tour bus rider, andrea bocelli sings 'happy birthday' ... to tmz celebrity tour bus rider, exclusive 247 3/8/2024 2:12 pm pt.

TMZ Celebrity Tour bus riders were in a huge treat to end the week -- 'cause Andrea Bocelli was in town ... and he came aboard to put his pipes on display for one lucky rider!

We ran into the legendary Italian tenor out in the streets of Hollywood Friday -- where we happened to be doing our TMZ Celebrity Tour ... and one of our guides spotted Andrea and his son, Matteo, in the heart of the city, opting to hop off and interview him.

It made for a pretty epic conversation if we do say so ourselves. Check it out ... not only did AB give us the time of day -- telling us all about his upcoming projects -- but he also obliged us by coming on the bus and chopping it up with the riders.

The dude was super sweet ... and once he was on the bus -- he did someone a huge favor.

He didn't do "Ave Maria" here -- but Andrea did sing the next best thing ... and that would be "Happy Birthday" to one of our tour guide guests. Of course, phones were out for this one.

Just goes to show ... you really do see famous people on the TMZ Celebrity Tour -- and it's 100% worth its weight in gold, especially when awesome stuff like this happens. We'll admit ... even we were a little star-struck with Andrea's pop-in here, 'cause the dude's an absolute icon.

Waiting for your permission to load the Instagram Media.

Thanks for the visit, Mr. Bocelli!

Book a once-in-a-lifetime adventure to The Great Land on one of these top luxury ships.

Cruising to Alaska on a small luxury ship affords a very different experience than sailing through The Great Land on a larger vessel. On a smaller luxury ship, you'll enjoy the expected perks like fewer passengers and more personalized service – but you'll also physically get closer to the boundless wilderness, abundant wildlife, icy blue glaciers and majestic snow-capped mountains that you've waited a lifetime to see.

While the fares to sail on such vessels are quite a bit higher than those of larger cruise providers, the all-inclusive (or mostly all-inclusive) prices typically include all-suite accommodations with balconies, all meals, alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, 24-hour room service, Wi-Fi access, gratuities, welcome bottles of sparkling wine, pillow selection, some shore excursions and butler service. Best of all, you won't feel like you're being nickel-and-dimed while on board. As a special touch, the attentive crew members may even learn your name and memorize your preferred pre-dinner cocktail.

Unlike many mainstream lines, most luxury Alaska cruises do not offer pre- and post-cruise tours to extend your adventure. However, you can plan these experiences on your own through third-party providers.

Alaska Tour & Travel has pre-cruise packages that include visits to Denali National Park & Preserve and the small, quirky Alaska towns of Homer and Talkeetna. You can also see a different side of Alaska via a train ride on the Alaska Railroad, take a national parks tour that includes Kenai Fjords National Park or head northbound to Fairbanks , one of the best places in the world to see the northern lights (if you visit during aurora season, from late August to late April). In addition, the company can plan a self-drive tour from Anchorage to Seward, which includes a stay at a wilderness lodge, helicopter flightseeing over Knik Glacier and guided tours in the parks.

The following luxury cruise lines will ensure you make the most of your voyage in Alaska – one of the most magical destinations on Earth.

Silversea Cruises

Silversea Cruises' small luxury ships are designed for adventurers interested in visiting a mix of Alaska's top ports and more rugged, off-the-beaten-track locales. Extended itineraries offer stops in less-visited destinations like the towns of Haines and Wrangell. On board, guests can expect a personalized experience that includes luxurious ocean-view suites with butler service, multiple gourmet dining options, complimentary alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, and attentive service with one of the highest crew-to-guest ratios in the industry.

Base fares for Silversea's 2024 and 2025 Alaska itineraries start at $3,250 per person. If you upgrade to Silversea 's door-to-door fare (which starts at $5,200 per person), you'll receive private chauffeur service from your home to the airport (and back home upon your return) and round-trip flights, with business class upgrades in some destinations.

Silversea also offers immersive pre- and post-cruise land experiences, departing from Seward, Alaska. Highlights include sightseeing flights over Denali National Park & Preserve or into bear country to see Alaska's magnificent grizzly bears. In Vancouver, travelers can take a flightseeing transfer to Victoria to tour the 55-acre Butchart Gardens or board the Rocky Mountaineer for a two-day train ride through the Canadian Rockies.

Silversea's Alaska itineraries extend from May to September, with voyages ranging between seven and 16 days. The line's newest and largest vessel, the 728-passenger Silver Nova , sails its inaugural Alaska season in 2024 along with two smaller ships, Silver Muse (596 guests) and Silver Shadow (392 guests). There are 35 Alaska voyages available in 2024. In 2025, luxury cruisers can hop aboard one of 45 scheduled voyages on either Silver Nova or the 596-guest Silver Moon .

For a seven-day itinerary, consider a sailing from Seward, Alaska, to Vancouver, British Columbia. This voyage cruises the Hubbard Glacier and the Inside Passage and stops in the Alaska towns of Juneau, Skagway, Sitka and Ketchikan. Complimentary excursions in Ketchikan include a tour of Saxman Native Village; a visit to Bonfire Bay Oyster Farm, featuring a sea-to-table oyster tasting; the Alaskan Cultural, Culinary & Lumberjack show; the Alaskan Lodge Adventure & Seafeast and a day as a fisherman aboard the Aleutian Ballard, as seen on Discovery Channel's "The Deadliest Catch." You can also opt for a Selected Shore Excursion (for an additional cost), such as mountain biking or a private fishing trip.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent Seven Seas Cruises' elegant Seven Seas Explorer sails the line's Alaska itineraries in 2024 and 2025. The lavish 746-guest ship was coined "The Most Luxurious Ship Ever Built" when it debuted in 2016; among its impressive features are the 3,875-square-foot Regent Suite and a high-end collection of art displayed throughout the ship, including works by Pablo Picasso.

Alaska voyages with Regent in 2024 and 2025 start at $4,799 per person. Upgraded 2-for-1 all-inclusive fares (starting at $5,499 per person) cover elegant all-balcony suite accommodations; round-trip airfare (business class on international flights); a one-night pre-cruise hotel package; free two- or three-night land programs; free unlimited shore excursions; free unlimited beverages (alcoholic and nonalcoholic); complimentary specialty dining; and prepaid gratuities. You'll also receive complimentary airport transfers, unlimited Wi-Fi access and valet laundry service.

Every suite style includes a private balcony, roomy closets and upscale finishes. Concierge Suites (and above) add cozy in-room amenities like cashmere blankets, perfect to bundle up in while you take in the scenery. Meanwhile, Penthouse Suites (and higher) include a private butler who can book excursions, make dinner and spa reservations, unpack your luggage, arrange for a private cocktail soiree in your suite and indulge any other special requests.

Between May and September 2024, Regent sails 22 Alaska voyages. There are 16 Alaska sailings scheduled for the same period in 2025. Itineraries range from seven to 14 nights. For plenty of scenic cruising days, consider a round-trip itinerary from Vancouver departing May 28, 2025. The cruise includes five relaxing days at sea, where you'll enjoy scenic cruising through the Inside Passage (twice), Hubbard Glacier (twice) and Endicott Arm Fjord. Ports of call in Alaska include Wrangell, Juneau , Skagway, Sitka, Seward, Icy Strait (Hoonah) and Ketchikan. You'll also have a full day in Victoria, British Columbia, before returning to Vancouver.

While in Wrangell, consider the Tongass Botanical Forest Walk excursion. Tongass National Forest is the largest national forest in the U.S., with towering old-growth trees and unique flora, fauna and ecosystems. While in the temperate rainforest with your naturalist guide, look for local wildlife like Sitka black-tailed deer, porcupines and birds of prey. Other complimentary excursions at this stop include a round of golf at Muskeg Meadows Golf Course; a canoe trip through Wrangell harbor and nearby islands, and a heritage tour about Tlingit culture and the history of the town.

Nobu restaurant on a Crystal cruise ship.

Recently relaunched Crystal offers just seven voyages in Alaska aboard Crystal Serenity in July and August 2024. The 740-guest luxury vessel was refurbished in 2023 and features the line's signature top-notch service, elegant interiors and suites, and personal butler service in every room category.

Other perks and amenities include plush bathrobes and Sicily's Ortigia bath products; an impressive passenger-to-crew ratio; prepaid gratuities; complimentary beverages; and outstanding cuisine, including Umi Uma (an exclusive Nobu restaurant at sea, available only on Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony ). Guests can also feast on Italian cuisine at Osteria d'Ovidio; book an exclusive dining experience at The Vintage Room; indulge in Parisian cafe-style fare at The Bistro; opt for American cuisine at Waterside Restaurant or take their pick of several other casual indoor and alfresco options.

Cruisers also have their selection of unique shore experiences curated by Crystal's parent company A&K Travel Group, such as a ride on the world's largest zip line in Hoonah (Icy Strait Point); dog sledding and glacier flightseeing in Skagway; fishing and wilderness dining in Ketchikan and the Wildlife Quest and Fin Island Lodge experience in Sitka, boasting a feast of Alaska king crab and wild salmon.

Crystal offers seven- and eight-night round-trip voyages from Vancouver , as well as one-way cruises from Vancouver or Seward, Alaska. Select itineraries – like the July 30, 2024, voyage from Vancouver to Seward – offer a scenic cruising day in the Seymour Narrows in British Columbia. On this sailing, you'll also enjoy a day at sea cruising Hubbard Glacier, as well as stops in Ketchikan, Sitka, Hoonah (Icy Strait), Skagway and Sitka in Alaska. Or, opt for the July 2, 2024, round-trip sailing from Vancouver for three scenic cruising days in the Inside Passage, Endicott Arm and the Seymour Narrows.

The line's Aug. 13, 2024, round-trip sailing from Vancouver features a special guest: Manfredi Lefebvre d'Ovidio, the executive chairman of A&K Travel Group. As such, the cruise will include an exclusive gala dinner and other unique experiences. Other special voyages welcome marine biologist and National Geographic photographer Flip Nicklin, who will share personal stories from his extensive career and expert insights about humpback whale habitats and behaviors.

Viking Ocean Cruises

Viking Ocean Cruises' 11-day Alaska & the Inside Passage cruise is available on 11 dates during the 2024 season. It sails from Vancouver to Seward (or the reverse) on the 930-passenger Viking Orion . In 2025, the line offers the same itinerary on 22 dates between May and September, split between Viking Orion and its sister ship, the 930-passenger Viking Sea .

Viking's destination-focused itineraries are curated for travelers who are interested in history, science, culture and cuisine, as they feature onboard enrichment like lectures by Viking's resident historians. You'll also find regionally inspired dishes in The Restaurant and special access to unique tours and excursions ashore.

The line's mostly all-inclusive fares cover accommodations in spacious all-veranda staterooms and suites; beer, wine and soft drinks at lunch and dinner; meals at all the dining venues; one shore excursion in every port; free Wi-Fi access; 24-hour specialty teas, coffees and bottled water; complimentary access to The Nordic Spa & Fitness Center; and other upscale amenities.

Voyages traveling northbound from Vancouver include one day of scenic cruising through the Inside Passage before stopping in Ketchikan, Sitka, Juneau, Skagway and Icy Strait Point in Alaska. The eighth day of the cruise sails through picturesque Yakutat Bay, which includes the Hubbard Glacier. The ship then calls on Valdez, Alaska, before the trip ends with two days in Seward.

While in Valdez, take an optional tour to explore the incredible scenery surrounding the small fishing town. Viking offers a kayaking trip to see the Valdez Glacier; a scenic cruise through picturesque Prince William Sound to view the Columbia Glacier; a wildlife cruise where you can look for humpback whales, orcas, porpoises, sea otters and bald eagles; a helicopter ride over the area's rugged, icy wilderness; or a UTV adventure through the Chugach Mountains to Mineral Creek Canyon.

Seabourn Cruise Line

Between May and August 2024, Seabourn Cruise Line will host 20 Alaska voyages aboard the Seabourn Odyssey , before the ship leaves the cruise line in the fall. In 2025, the line offers 27 Alaska sailings on Seabourn Quest. Both yacht-inspired ships accommodate up to 458 guests and feature Seabourn's signature all-inclusive amenities, including luxurious oceanfront suites with verandas; personalized service; complimentary fine wines and premium spirits; complimentary dining; and caviar served throughout the sailing. You'll also have a complimentary W-Fi package and an in-suite minibar stocked with your favorite beverages. Ashore, sign up for exclusive programs like shopping for fresh salmon, halibut and Alaska king crab alongside a Seabourn chef.

Guests booking Seabourn Quest for 2025 will be able to sample the line's new dining concept, Solis. Inspired by destinations in the Mediterranean, the menu features a fresh, modern take on traditional dishes and whimsical cocktails. The restaurant is a collaboration with master chef and culinary partner Anton Egger and senior corporate chef Franck Salein. In addition to dishes like salt-encrusted whole branzino and Tuscan-style steak, guests will also find a wide selection of vegan and vegetarian dishes.

The seven-day Alaska Fjords & Canadian Inside Passage itinerary on May 31, 2024, aboard Seabourn Odyssey, sails from Juneau to Vancouver and includes a day in either Tracy Arm or Endicott Arm, depending on the ice conditions. From there, you can take one of the optional guided excursions: Ventures by Seabourn. These tours are an additional cost but offer opportunities for up-close Zodiac, kayaking or catamaran experiences in the wilderness to see glaciers calving and view local wildlife, such as black bears, mountain goats, seals, wolves and seabirds.

You'll also enjoy many days of scenic cruising on this voyage, and have the opportunity for more optional adventures in Rudyerd Bay (Misty Fjords). The ship makes additional stops in Wrangell, Alaska, and Prince Rupert, British Columbia, before disembarking in Vancouver.

If you want to see stunning Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve, then consider booking the seven-day Alaska Inside Passage & Glacier Bay sailing on May 10, 2024, from Vancouver to Juneau. This itinerary also includes the Seymour Narrows and Snow Pass, cruising Queen Island Sound and the Lynn Canal. There's a stop for Ventures by Seabourn activities like kayaking and Zodiac rides in the Inian Islands. The Alaska ports of call on this voyage are Ketchikan, Sitka, Icy Strait Point and Haines. You'll disembark in Juneau.

French luxury expedition line PONANT offers 10 Alaska cruises in 2024; itineraries span between seven and 11 nights. Aboard the 264-guest yacht-style Le Soléal, you'll meet up to 10 naturalist experts and guides specializing in geology, history, ornithology or marine or land mammals. Guests can attend onboard lectures and embark on Zodiac landings with the guides.

The ship features elegant staterooms and suites, a library, a spa, a hair salon and a gym. Guests will be treated to movies in the theater, wine tastings and cooking demonstrations throughout the expedition. All fine dining meals, 24-hour room service, an open bar (including an in-room minibar) and complimentary and unlimited Wi-Fi access are covered in the pricing.

Two of PONTANT's eight-night voyages from Vancouver to Sitka are in partnership with Smithsonian Journeys and are curated for English-speaking travelers. Fares for these expeditions include transfers to and from the ship and a shore excursion in each port. On board, you can attend talks and discussions hosted by two Smithsonian Journeys experts: geologist Scott Burns and natural history filmmaker John Grabowska.

On these voyages, there is a sea day after departing Vancouver. You'll cruise through the Johnstone Strait, where you'll have an excellent chance of seeing humpback whales and orcas. After a day spent in the Inside Passage, the ship will call on the village of Metlakatla, Alaska, on the western coast of Annette Island, which is home to the Tsimshians from British Columbia. Other unique Alaska ports of call in this itinerary include the commercial fishing town of Petersburg, the Tlingit village of Kake and the small fishing community of Alfin Cove.

I pay $18 a month for a membership that gets me 50% off stays at new luxury hotels and a free coffee drink every day

  • I paid $216 ($18 a month) for a one-year membership with Ennismore's Dis-loyalty  travel program .
  • The membership comes with half-off discounts for stays at select new hotels and free coffee drinks.
  • I think the membership is worth it so far, especially since I live near a participating hotel.

Insider Today

When I came across Ennismore's Dis-loyalty travel membership program, the deals seemed almost too good to be true.

For $216 a year or $18 a month, members are promised deals on hotel stays , discounted meals, and free coffee at Ennismore partner brands.

I was looking to add a little bit of luxury and adventure to my life, so I bought a membership in January.

Here's what I think so far.

The program offers discounted hotel stays — some 50% off

The Dis-Loyalty program offers discounts across 10 hotel brands (80 locations) that Ennismore has partnered with, so far.

One of the most enticing parts of the deal is the opportunity to get 50% off a stay at a brand-new hotel if I stay within the first three months of its opening.

I haven't been able to use that perk yet, but I'm currently planning a trip to visit The Hoxton Vienna, which is set to open in April. I'm excited to use my discount to book the hotel's most spacious room for just $120 a night.

Nine other partner hotels are set to open in London, Jakarta, Edinburgh, Perth, Nice, and Copenhagen this year.

I can also get discounts at existing partner hotels — 20% off my first visit and 10% off all returning visits. But I like that the half-off stays incentivize me to try new places .

The membership also comes with a free barista-made drink every day

In addition to hotels, Ennismore has partnership deals with over 170 restaurants, bars, and coffee shops.

Members get 10% off at all of them, but my favorite perk is getting one complimentary barista-crafted drink a day if I visit select spots.

So far, I've gotten a free matcha latte , oat-milk latte, and ginger-turmeric tea. I just let the barista know I'm a disloyalty member and show my membership ID.

Even if I only end up getting four free drinks a month, that essentially pays for the membership.

While I plan future trips, I'm using my membership locally to get the most out of a luxurious coworking space

I live in New York , so I thought the perfect way to start using my membership was to visit The Hoxton Williamsburg.

The hotel feels like a hub of trendiness and cool vibes. There's a grand wooden staircase that leads down to the lobby, which acts almost like a chic coworking space .

I'm glad I live near a Hoxton, out of any of the properties, because the hotel has "open house" lobbies at all of its locations, meaning anyone can use the space to work. The lobby fills up quickly, so I recommend getting there early if you want a spot.

Being able to work from a trendy spot while using my membership to get free coffee and dining discounts is pretty great.

At other properties, redeeming any Dis-loyalty offers should grant you similar access to public spaces in the hotel.

I already feel like I'm getting my money's worth even though I haven't traveled yet

I think Ennismore's Dis-loyalty membership could be a game changer for anyone looking to add some spontaneity and luxury to their lives.

Since I live near some of the participating properties and eateries, I already feel like I'm getting a lot out of my membership. And I'm even more excited to check out new hotels around the globe.

With each sip of my complimentary drinks and every glimpse of my future travel itineraries, I'm reminded of just how much I'm getting for what essentially used to be my coffee budget.
