Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour Takes An Estimated 90 Trucks To Travel America [UPDATE: It's Closer To 50]

Taylor Swift’s “Eras Tour” is quite the performance feat. Since tickets went on sale last year, it’s been dominating headlines and breaking all kinds of records. Off the back of the tour, Swift has set attendance records at stadiums across the U.S., broken the record for the highest-grossing U.S. tour in history and she set a new benchmark for the most concert tickets sold in a single day .

But, I hear you ask, why does Jalopnik care about one of the hottest tickets in town ? Well, as well as being an all-out musical spectacle, the show is also a feat of logistics that, according to a source familiar with the show, requires 50 semi trucks to set up. That’s because of all the costumes, color-coded microphones, massive LED screens and illuminated staging that the “Hits Different” singer takes to each and every show with her.

The stage for the tour is huge, and it features an expansive LED screen as Swift’s backdrop. There’s also an enormous illuminated catwalk-style section that stretches almost the length of a football field. It’s an impressive site to behold, as the stage can rise and fall to match Swift’s needs, and also projects all manner of images to showcase each era in the singer’s career – including a barrage of snakes when she kicks off her Reputation era .

On top of all that, there’s the innumerable speakers, lights and everything else you need to put on a psychedelic show that all needs taking with the “Getaway Car” singer across the U.S .

Shipping all that kit from place to place takes an effort almost as large as Swift’s back catalog. According to a report from the New York Post , the effort begins more than a week before the show, when a barrage of trucks takes to the stadium.

The site spoke with Dave Brooks, Billboard senior director of live music and touring, about the show to find out what it takes to put the spectacle on. The Post reports:

For a stadium tour of this magnitude, Brooks said, “They have advance teams that can be prepping and pre-building.” Closer to the date, a team of an estimated 90 trucks pulls into the venue to construct the sprawling scene for Swift to sing career-spanning hits ranging from her 2006 self-titled debut album to her latest LP, 2022’s “Midnights.”

While Brooks’ estimate is close to the 80 semi trailers that Swift needed for every stop on her last stadium show , it’s a little off the mark for her 2023 tour. Instead, a person who is deeply familiar with the tour told Jalopnik that The Eras Tour requires 50 trucks to traverse America.

In those trucks, Swift crams the stage and all manner of props, including a mossy house that forms the set for the Folklore section of the show, and a fleet of illuminated bikes for 1989 . There are also numerous costume changes and more guitars than you can shake a stick at.

Once all that is unloaded, Swift puts on two or three nights in each city she stops at. After that, it’s all packed up and moves onto the next stop on the tour.

Formula One driver Fernando Alonso has addressed rumours that he’s dating Taylor Swift , following her split from Joe Alwyn .

The Spanish racing driver was asked about the romance reports during a recent interview with Sky Sports.

“It’s been an interesting few weeks for you during this break, I knew you were trouble!” the interviewer said to Alonso, referring to a song on Swift’s Red album.

When asked about his newfound online fame as a result of the dating rumours, the racing star responded: “I’m just focused on Baku and racing.”

Earlier this week, the racing star appeared to be encouraging the rumours.

In a TikTok video, he winked at the camera and looked down at his phone, as a sped-up version of Swift’s song, Karma, played in the background.

He captioned the post: “Race week era,” with a wink emoji in a nod to the 33-year-old’s Eras tour.

Rumours about the pair first sparked this week, when DeuxMoi, a celebrity gossip account, shared a blind item about them.

“A couple of Spanish magazines have been posting about TS and Spanish F1 driver Fernando Alonso,” an anonymous email on the account’s Instagram read.

“According to them, the couple has been seeing each other for a week now. Nothing serious tho since they are both recently single.”

Earlier this month, Alonso shared a joint statement from him and his girlfriend, Andrea Schlager, to announce their split.

“We wanted to tell you that our relationship as a couple ended. We have been lucky enough to share a fantastic time together, and it will continue to be so, but on a different form of affection,” he wrote.

“As you have probably seen, we have continued working on and off track on various projects together also during this time, and we will keep doing so with deep love and respect for each other.”

Swift and Alwyn reportedly broke up last month after six years of dating. According to People, the couple split due to “differences in their personalities”.

“They’ve had rough patches before and always worked things out, so friends thought they would take some time apart but eventually come back together,” a source claimed to publication, adding that “ultimately” the two “weren’t the right fit for one another.”

“Joe has struggled with Taylor’s level of fame and the attention from the public," they continued. “The differences in their personalities have also become harder to ignore after years together. They’ve grown apart.”

The Shake It Off singer made a rare comment about Alwyn last October.

“Like my relationship for six years, we’ve had to dodge weird rumours, tabloid stuff, and we just ignore it,” she said in an Instagram video.

T here is perhaps no tangible way to settle the GOAT debate in Formula 1. But what happens when someone who has worked closely with 3 different world champions across different eras of Formula 1 is asked to choose his best two picks? It’s not as straightforward as you might think. However, Formula 1’s current Chief Technical Officer, Pat Symonds , who has worked with all 3 multiple world champions– Ayrton Senna , Michael Schumacher, and Fernando Alonso –in the past, recently favored the Spaniard, Alonso over the Brazilian legend, Senna. His reasons? Simply the era in which Senna raced.

It’s interesting to note that just over a year ago, at the Autosport International show in Birmingham, when Symonds was asked a similar question, he gave a very different answer. He has had the privilege of collaborating with these legendary drivers during his tenure with ‘Team Enstone’ from the early 1980s to 2008 . During the 1980s, Symonds played a crucial role at Toleman , the precursor to Benetton and Renault , where he worked alongside Ayrton Senna during the early phase of his illustrious career.

Moving into the 1990s, Symonds served as Michael Schumacher ‘s race engineer during the German’s championship-winning campaign in 1994 and again in 1995. And eventually, he contributed to Fernando Alonso’s championship triumphs in 2005 and 2006. When asked to choose the best of the three drivers, Symonds highlighted the different demands drivers faced in their respective eras in the ’80s, ’90s, and 2000s. And that, according to him, was the reason it’s hard to pick between drivers from a different era.

However, in a recent appearance on the F1: Beyond The Grid Podcast , when host Tom Clarkson asked Symonds to pick his dream team of 2 drivers, this very reason became the deciding factor in leaving Ayrton Senna out. “You got to choose of Senna, Schumacher, and Alonso, who’s in?” asked Clarkson.

“ Michael Schumacher, no doubt about that. Then, I think [Fernando] Alonso, “ said Symonds. “ Because Senna probably really really high on natural ability. [But] how would he adapt to modern Formula 1, [I] really don’t know. So I would probably go on the safer choice.” Despite Alonso’s lack of recent victories, Symonds still regards him highly, describing him as “very intelligent.”

He regards him so highly in fact, that he believes Mercedes shouldn’t even think twice before signing Fernando Alonso for 2025 even if that decision could pose some problems for George Russell .

Fernando Alonso is Symonds’ top pick for Mercedes as a small to medium-term option

Despite the challenges with the W15 car, Mercedes is actively looking for a driver to fill Lewis Hamilton ‘s shoes. One notable recommendation comes from Pat Symonds, who sees Fernando Alonso as a perfect short to medium-term candidate for the Silver Arrows. Symonds believes Alonso’s experience could provide Mercedes with valuable insight and help the team move forward, something very similar to what Alonso did at Aston Martin when he joined the Silverstone-based team in 2023.

Speaking of whether Mercedes should consider signing Fernando Alonso, Symonds said, “Yes. I really rate the guy, I think he’s incredibly fast. So, if I was looking for the best result I could get in 2025, who do I need to help me with my brand new 2026 car to a totally new set of regulations, Fernando’s your man. However, then you’re left with a problem. You’re left with the problem of George, who’s been there a few years and thinking, ‘Where do I go next?’.

“Fernando, who, probably at that point, says, ‘Yep, okay, I’ve proven it. It’s time to move on.’… So, I think if I was Toto, I would do it. But I’d be thinking, ‘Okay, well, what’s my next move?’ Because you’ve got to be looking further down the line,” he added.

The culture shock ratings considers the destination visited, transport used, activities undertaken and that "Wow, I'm really not at home now!" factor. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

This is the least confronting of our tour range. Transport used on the trip is either private or a very comfortable public option, the activities included are usually iconic sites and locations that are not all too confronting.

The tour can include a mix of private and public transport providing a level of comfort that is slightly below what you would experience at home. Sites visited are usually iconic sites, tours can also include market visits, visits to communities etc that provide the traveller with a fantastic insight into destination.

Expect to rough it for parts of this tour, whether it's a packed public bus where you are forced to stand, a visit to a local market, a local community, you are sure to have an experience that is very different from what you're used to at home.

The comforts of your home town and the environment you are used to are more of a rarity. Expect some challenging transport options, visits to local sites and areas that don't resemble anything at home.

You're out there in the global community! You are likely to be exposed to the elements, travel in whatever means of transport is available and basically take it as it comes, whatever comes! It can be tough.

Climbing on and off local transport or riding a bike up to 30 kms along predominantly flat terrain or jumping in a kayak for a gentle paddle on flat water.

These Tours will provide you with some solid physical activity. Whether its bike riding, walking, trekking, kayaking or riding on public transport you will need to have a good level of fitness to enjoy this tour.

Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”.
