- A Complete Guide to African Safaris for Solo Travellers
- Share on Facebook

More and more solo travellers are wanting to explore Africa. We know that, coupled with long-haul flights, transfers, activity fees and other expenses, a safari can be a pricey vacation. Especially if you then also have to pay a single supplement rate on your accommodation because you're a solo traveller.
What is a Single Supplement for Solo Travellers?
Safari accommodation rates are often calculated for two guests sharing one room or tent. Factored into the cost are your meals, what it takes to maintain your room and operate the safari lodge, as well as a proportion of staff salaries.
Instead of paying the full accommodation rate, which can be very expensive for a solo traveller, some lodges and hotels charge a 'per person' rate with a single supplement to ensure they can cover their costs. This single supplement for solo travellers can be anywhere between 25% and 75% of the 'per person' rate.
What is Single Occupancy on Safari?
Most rooms or tents accommodate two guests sharing, aside from family rooms. Double occupancy means there are two guests per room, while single occupancy on safari is only one guest per room. But that doesn't necessarily mean the room has a single bed – it's usually a queen- or king-sized bed.
Essentially, single occupancy on safari is when a room or tent is used by a solo traveller that could have occupied two guests. A camp or lodge may charge a solo traveller a small fee to cover the cost of an 'empty bed'.
Can You Go on Safari Alone?
Absolutely! We've been tailor-making Africa tours for singles since 1998 and have helped to create unforgettable trips for solo travellers. Read on to discover all you need to know about solo travel in Africa…
"I was met by someone who got me to my next location"
I visited four countries in East Africa over a two-week period... When I arrived at each of my destinations, I was met by someone who got me to my next location... I was able to tailor my city tours because I had a solo tour. - Mary
Top Tips for Planning Africa Tours for Singles
Our experienced Africa Safari Experts have crafted thousands of tailor-made itineraries for many types of travellers from all over the world. Here is our best advice on Africa tours for singles:
1. Book in Advance
Lodges and camps that waive single supplement charges will often only do so on one room or tent. The earlier you begin planning, the better your chances of securing that room for yourself.
2. Choose Your Season
You are far more likely to get affordable safaris for solo travellers in low or Green Season, when both rates and demand are lower than high season. Green Season has plenty of advantages , not least of which are more options for single travellers.
3. Opt for a Tailor-Made Itinerary
Not all safari accommodation makes allowances for singles. That's why it's handy to work with a travel agent with regular, first-hand safari experience and a tried-and-trusted network of suppliers. With Go2Africa, you can rely on your Africa Safari Expert to know exactly which lodges and camps to book for your solo trip, and slot in seamless transfers and activities.
4. Be Upfront About Your Expectations
Let your travel agent know your preferences so they can craft the best possible itinerary for you. Consider the following:
- Do you want to dine alone or communally? Do you want a choice of who you dine with?
- Do you want to join a scheduled departure tour with a group or be fully independent?
- Is there a specific reason for your safari such as spotting a significant bird or photographing a wildlife event?
- Are activities like hot-air ballooning or cultural interactions important to you?
- Do you want to be around young children or do you prefer a more mature environment?
- The same for being around honeymooners – do you prefer a less romantic atmosphere or does it not matter?
- Do you prefer bigger establishments or smaller, more intimate accommodation?
A great safari starts with great communication. There should be no detail too small for your travel agent to know while they are building and costing your solo trip to Africa. Let them know anything that concerns you, what you hope to achieve from your holiday and what your budget limitations are.
"All lodges, guides, transfers, meals and activities were just wonderful"
Rikke was very helpful with arrangements and answered very quickly all my concerns during the booking process for my trip to Uganda and Tanzania. She worked with my budget and I was not disappointed at all. On the contrary, all lodges, guides, transfers, meals and activities were just wonderful. As a woman and solo travel I'm always a bit concerned before booking a trip but my experience was great and will definitely book my next trip to Africa with this company. - Maria

2. Activities
Many activities can be done as a group or on your own. If you want to meet fellow travellers, it's never a bad idea to join group activities like wine tours, boat cruises or guided city tours.
If you're somewhat of an adventure traveller, Victoria Falls is a great destination. A thrilling microlight flight over the waterfall or a group white-water rafting expedition are popular activities, as well as visiting the local markets or a traditional village.
What about going on safari alone? No problem! You'd automatically join in with group activities like game drives and guided walks. Most solo travellers go on safari purely for the wildlife, to get away from the hustle and bustle, or to make new friends. It’s easy to either immerse yourself into meeting new people, or just relax and be private.
Try to travel in the mid to high season, as this can help to reduce excess charges on transport. For example, most charter flights on safari require a minimum of two passengers to operate. So as a solo traveller, you might have to pay for an extra seat on the flight if you're travelling during low season. In high season, there's less chance of this happening with so many people travelling.
That being said, if you don't have to rely on charter flights between camps, the low season offers some of the most affordable safaris for solo travellers. Accommodation rates are low and you can have the wilderness all to yourself.
Many safari activities are offered for a minimum of two to four guests (bush meals, nature walks, etc.). Tailor-making an itinerary based purely on your interests is the best tip I can offer for solo travellers looking for more of an independent experience. This means you can get as fully inclusive as possible, without relying on others being interested in the same activities. Booking customised Africa tours for singles assure the best kind of safari with the most experiences possible. – Lauren Johansson, Africa Safari Expert

Solo travellers can make their safari even better with the following tips.
When I joined a safari in South Africa as a solo traveller, I couldn’t help but wonder if I was doing the right thing. Would I enjoy the experience and fit in as a single traveller? Thankfully, the answer was a resounding yes, but there are some things you need to know to ensure your solo safari adventure is memorable for all the right reasons.
Choose your season
High season is busier and more expensive, but it also tends to offer the best weather and wildlife spotting opportunities. However, you don’t necessarily have to visit at this time of year.
When you’re a solo traveller, travelling during the low or shoulder seasons can be worth it as you’re more likely to find accommodation deals with no single supplement. Provided you choose a lodge that isn’t accessed by charter flights, which usually require a minimum of two passengers to operate, a shoulder season safari can be a great choice.
A shoulder season safari can be a great choice.
Consider the time of year
If you enjoy a sleep-in, you may prefer not to visit in summer as you’ll have an earlier wake-up call for the first game drive of the day. On the upside, this gives you more time to enjoy the lodge and its facilities before lunch.
In winter, the timings are different, with a later wakeup call and earlier second game drive and dinner as the days are shorter.
The time of year you go on safari can determine the experience you might have.
Research different lodges
There are safari lodges in Africa to suit everybody; the trick is choosing the one that’s right for you. Some lodges welcome families, while others are honeymoon havens or popular with tour groups.
Solo travellers will likely be happiest at accommodations like Shamwari Private Game Reserve , which catered to a variety of travellers, most of whom spoke English, so it was easy to chat.
Settle into the traditional Shamwari Private Game Reserve. (Image: Shamwari Private Game Reserve)
Check the dining arrangements
If you’re travelling alone, check the arrangements for meals and discuss alternatives, if necessary, before you book. I was always seated by myself for lunch, which was fine with me but may not suit everyone. Other lodges insist on communal dining for every meal.
Bayethe Safari Lodge at Shamwari Private Game Reserve offers a nice balance, with a brai (the South African equivalent of an Australian barbeque) for each safari group and their guide every second night. On the alternate evening, guests can dine as they wish.
Bayethe Safari Lodge offers a nice balance of food options. (Image: Shamwari Private Game Reserve)
Pack light and leave your wheeled suitcase at home
Unless you’re staying at a high-end lodge, you’ll probably be carrying your own bag at least some of the time (or all of the time if you’re on a budget safari tour), so being able to move around comfortably with your luggage is essential.
Fortunately, it’s easy to pack light for an African safari as the weather is warm and clothes tend to dry quickly. Avoid bringing a wheeled suitcase as these don’t cope well with dirt roads and rugged paths.
Your clothes will dry quickly in the African heat.
Don’t arrive at your lodge too early
While this might seem like a clever way to extract extra value for money from your trip, avoid the temptation to arrive at your lodge early in the morning. As I discovered, it can feel quite lonely waiting for your room to be ready while other guests gather around you, talking excitedly about what they’ve seen on their morning drive.
Instead, arrive just in time for lunch, settle into your room and then head out on your first game drive in the afternoon.
Avoid FOMO by not arriving too early in the day. (Image: Shamwari Private Game Reserve)
Embrace the opportunity to meet other travellers
The communal nature of a safari holiday lends itself to socialising so, even if you usually prefer your own company, embrace the opportunity to meet other travellers from around the world. Once you’ve met the people in your safari vehicle, it’s easy to strike up a conversation as you all share a passion for travel, nature, animals and conservation.
Meet like-minded travellers on your safari.
Switching groups is possible, just ask
While it’s usually a pleasure meeting other travellers on safari, if you find yourself hoping your guide will find lions so you can feed an annoying ‘never-stops-talking’ guest to them, it’s possible to change groups. Simply ask discretely at the office or have a quiet word with your guide. Switching is easy as the lodge only needs to find a single spot in another jeep, yet another advantage of travelling solo.
You can swap groups if you’re not vibing with your current one. (Image: Wade Lambert)
Get to know your guide
If you’re staying at a lodge for a few days or more, you’ll probably have your guide to yourself for a ‘private’ game drive or two, as the other people in your vehicle check out and a new group joins you. Sitting up front in a safari vehicle with no other guests is a special experience that only single travellers get to enjoy.
On these trips, conversation tends to venture beyond the usual safari patter, and includes the chance to learn more about the local wildlife and what life is like in South Africa from someone who lives there.
Learn more about local wildlife with your guide.
Embrace the joy of quiet reflection
As a solo traveller, you’ll engage more deeply with your environment on safari, plus there is time for quiet reflection after each game drive. There is also much joy to be found in having the freedom to please yourself during such a unique travel experience. As I discovered, a solo safari is the ultimate holiday for adventurous single travellers.
As a solo traveller, you’ll engage more deeply with your environment on safari.

Solo Safari Experience
For anyone looking for a unique safari experience with a very knowledgeable, experienced and fun loving guy Shamiira. He gave this tour a real personal touch, with great approach and respect for the animals. He doesn’t go where all the Jeep traffic is, but rather solo experiences which last a lifetime. I saw all the animals from elephants to even jackals. Safety was prominent at all time. Highly recommended ! Whatsapp: 0764810350
This National Park is a big disappointment. The Park is a rather flat area with low trees and the topography is quite boring. The Park is home primarily to elephants and water buffalo -- but no other warm-blooded animals. In two hours in a jeep I saw 8 elephants and about 20 water buffalo -- not exactly an excess of wildlife! In addition you will see quite a few peacocks and some other birds. And that is it. I found the "safari" to be disappointing in every respect.
This morning I had a very close encounter with a wild elephant. We came upon the herd early and they let us watch from a distance as they foraged for salt and other minerals in the mud. We were there for a long time. Then one large female approached the jeep slowly and stopped when she was no more than 12 inches from my face. Lahiru our guide said she is telling us to move. They want to leave and we are in their way. So of course we moved. It was the most civil encounter with a wild beast you could imagine. If you have been put off by reading that Udawalawe, like other popular Sri Lankan national parks, are a chaotic scramble of jostling jeeps, then now is the time to visit. There are no queues to get in anywhere sadly because the Easter Sunday attacks have resulted in a drastic reduction in tourism. Prices have been drastically reduced. We have been here since Easter Tuesday and can tell you that this is still a peaceful and peace- loving country. You can be as safe here as anywhere in Europe or the States. Come to Udawalawe and see wild elephant herds close up and so much more besides. If you're smart you'll hire Lahiru Prasad as your guide. He is not only skilled and knowledgeable he's a great organiser and a good communicator. You'll find his contact in the Sri Lanka forum on TA
Udawalawe National Park is a must do on any visit to Sri Lanka! The wildlife you can see is incredible. My mom and I took a private jeep tour and our guide was Vishwa Rangana ([email protected]). Vishwa was an outstanding guide and let us take lots of time to admire the elephants and other animals from up close. When we expressed that we were also keeping an eye out for crocodiles, he rushed us to a more secluded section of the park where he usually spots the biggest crocodiles, and helped us spot them in the brush by the water. Throughout the entire tour, he spotted incredible animals that most of the other guides missed, and stopped to help us see them too. Nothing was too small for him to take the time to let us watch a critter to our hearts content. The wildlife in the park is astounding and the views are unforgettable. We can't recommend the whole experience enough!
We had an excellent visit - we saw elephants, water buffalo, crocodiles, peacocks, jackal, birds, monkeys, etc etc.
Amazing safari experience in Udawalawa National park. Most of elephants can see and observe their behaviors during morning time. They are very familiar with visitors.

Best of Kenya Solo Safari
The ultimate African safari for the solo traveller, this trip combines two of Africa's most famous safari regions, Kenya's Maasai Mara Reserve and the rolling plains around the iconic Mount Kilimanjaro. Flown by light aircraft throughout, and met at each location, you will be safely guided to two luxury lodges with some of the best views on the continent. First, Ol Donyo Lodge, in 275, 000 acres of private land, bordering Chyulu Hills National Park and owned by 4000 Maasai. From your private plunge pool at your suite, you will look out over the rolling plains towards Mount Kilimanjaro, and if you choose to, you can even sleep out under a canopy of stars on a start bed and listen to the hyenas and lions moving around. Highlights of Morocco
I loved this trip, I had an amazing time and met some great people! A big shout out to our CEO Ibrahim Laarif who did an outstanding Job along with our driver also known Ibrahim. Our CEO was very knowledgeable, passionate and accommodating. Tour Highlights: Altas Mountains, Chefchaouen, Sahara - camel ride and Essaouira. The hotels we stayed at were beautifully decorated in the traditional Moroccan style, the locations were central and comfortable. The only downside is the mode of transportation- the van felt cramped at times (especially on long drives). All in all it was a great trip made memorable by the people on tour as well as those we met along the way.

Queen Cleopatra - 7 days
Myself and partner just completed this tour and absolutely had a brilliant time. From the start it was easy! We were met at Cairo airport with a driver and took us straight to our hotel where we were met by Taher who explained everything in detail and made sure we were very comfortable. Mohammad our first tour guide and he was a legend! Super friendly very good English and great sense of humour. Our next tour guide was Anas and he was just as good. Super friendly and very knowledgeable. Thoughtout the whole tour we never had to wait around for transfers or anything like that it was extremely well organised and we felt completely at easy and safe at all times. I cannot recommend this enough to anyone thinking of visiting Egypt. We will be definitely returning to try one of the other tours on offer!
- River Cruise
Best Of Egypt - 5* Cruise
An amazing experience through all the sights of Egypt. Our guide Mina Nash was the perfect fit. Very knowledgeable, friendly, and accommodating for us. Being in Egypt can be daunting and difficult to navigate, this tour made the process streamlined. We were able to enjoy our trip and not worry about all the difficulties of being in a new country. The country itself is amazing and the sights are impossible to top. Will need to come back for more!
Goddess Hathor - 8 Days (5 stars)
**Unforgettable Egypt Adventure** I recently embarked on an unforgettable tour of Egypt with my friend, and it exceeded all our expectations. From the moment I landed in Cairo to the awe-inspiring view of the Pyramids of Giza, every moment was filled with wonder and excitement. Our knowledgeable guide led us through the bustling streets of Cairo, sharing fascinating insights into the city's rich history and vibrant culture. We explored iconic landmarks such as the Sphinx and the Egyptian Museum, marveling at ancient artifacts and treasures. The highlight of the trip was undoubtedly our journey down the Nile River. Cruising aboard a luxurious riverboat, we sailed past picturesque landscapes and charming villages, immersing ourselves in the timeless beauty of the Nile Valley. Visiting temples like Karnak and Luxor Temple was a truly spiritual experience, leaving me in awe of the ingenuity and craftsmanship of the ancient Egyptians. Of course, no trip to Egypt would be complete without a visit to the legendary Pyramids of Giza. Standing in the shadow of these colossal structures, I couldn't help but feel a sense of reverence for the ancient civilization that built them. Throughout the tour, the hospitality of the Egyptian people was exceptional, making us feel welcome and at home wherever we went. From sampling delicious local cuisine to bargaining for souvenirs in the bustling bazaars, every day brought new adventures and memories to cherish. In conclusion, my journey through Egypt was an unforgettable experience that exceeded all my expectations. I highly recommend it to anyone seeking adventure, history, and culture in one remarkable destination. Our tour guide Anas was very knowledgeable and resourceful. He ensured that we covered everything timely and accommodated our requests in a personalized manner. Highly recommend Holiday in Egypt tour.

They were there for every moment. From flights to tours to excursions to talking to vendors or camel wranglers there was never any confusion or problems knowing what to do or how to get there. All the things that can make a trip like this overwhelming were completely eliminated.

Pharaohs Nile Cruise Adventure - Return Intra-Flights Included
Honestly I didn't have the highest expectations from this tour as the price was so reasonable so I thought there had to be a catch, but boy was I wrong. We had the most amazing time and were treated like royalty by all the staff on the boat. We sailed on Chateau Lafayette which looked a little dated, but it was brilliant. We had the most amazing tour guide from Luxor to Aswan - (Ahmed) Saladino. He has so much knowledge that he shares so willingly with all on the tour. All the places we visited were very busy by our standards, but brilliantly managed by the systems in place at all the tourist sites. We flew from Cairo to Luxor rather than take the train, as recommended by the Tour Director - Ahmed. Was the best option. We also did the optional balloon flight over The Valley of the Kings which was spectacular. The other optional tour we did was Abu Simbel which was well worth the long drive to actually see such a significant site. Would have been great to have a little extra time there, but we really squeezed everything into the time we had. I would highly recommend this tour for anyone who has a passing interest in history.
Magic of Egypt - (Cairo - Nile Cruise - Red Sea) 12 Days
Just got home from our Amazon tour. My wife and I had been wanting to visit Egypt for 20 years and finally got to to do it. Like all tours, nothing is ever perfect but it was amazing wonderful experience. The tour guides knowledge and passion for what they do is second to none. Now the brutal honest part. You need to let go of reservations about what life is like if you come from western countries. There is some extreme poverty and turmoil within the country but the organisers and guides do there very best to shield you from that. Be prepared to to be canvassed if walk the streets, everything is “$1”. Ask your guides to take you to the mini supermarkets at the the end of the days and buy snacks and water or drinks. It’s very cheap if you do it this way. Make sure you get a tourist sim as it is a life saver to keep in contact with the guides and organisers at all times. Cost about $35 for 30gb and lots of call time. There is nowhere outside the airport or money exchanges to get foreign currency, so if you need any. Make sure you’ve got that all in hand before leaving Cairo. That being said Egyptian menu is easy to understand and excepted everywhere. Always keep 10-20 egp in pocket as anytime you use the toilets you have to tip the cleaning staff. And finally two rules to live by. Never let anyone touch your things even if they are being helpful as they’ll expect a tip. If your happy to oblige then by all means. 2nd be prepared to say no. The canvassers dont give up on your first no response. Although impolite we found it’s easier just to ignore them. That all being said that’s the things to watch out for. The trip itself. All the sites were astonishing. The cruise was a very pleasant suprise, we really enjoyed that part. Have a different perspective of Egypt from everything else. And final recommendations. Anywhere there is bus or train travel, pay the extra and fly. The private transport with the guides is fantastic but the train and buses from towns is slow, hot. And it also frees up all the travel downtime. So final words. We had an amazing adventure and experience and would definitely recommend the tour. Just do lots of research. Hope this is some help to all

Part 1: Capetown. Great hotel, loved the tour to Kirstenbosch and Cape Point. Our CEO Dee assisted us with scheduling the free day by arranging a half-day tour to Stellenbosch. Part 2: Johannesburg. Nice guesthouse, good food. Loved the Panoramic Route, Kruger safari and everything about the Karongwe stay (lodges, safaris and food!)
Egypt Highlights
We had great time! The tour was amazing.I’ll recommend all my friends. Our tour guide (George) was the best.
Nile Adventure - Felucca cruise
This was a trip of a lifetime! There is so much historical sites and history to go with it, the temples were so amazing and I still don’t believe how they were made!! Every place we went to it blew me away how they were still standing and the hieroglyphics were so clear and colourful. We had the best tour guide, he always went out of the way to make sure we were happy and had what we needed! If I come back I would definitely go with timeless tours agains.
Legends of Egypt
I would especially like to highlight our tour guide Karim (Cairo). I have rarely met such a nice, polite and helpful guide. He is super competent and can adjust to his guests, you do not find that very often.
Totally Morocco Tour from Casablanca
Once we landed in Casablanca, we were already in good hand. The tour guide and driver picked us up from the airport. The whole trip we were given a good care. Driss was a good driver that we all felt safe and comfortable the whole trip with his drive. Khalid the tour guide is very knowledgeable of the country, custom and culture. His explanation was well understood and educational. We traveled over 2000 km in 9 days, we explored the different part of country, custom and culture of Morocco. The scenery is so different in every two hours distance. I would highly recommend this tour for someone who wants to explore this country.
Reviews of Africa Solo Tours
Highly recommended tour, our tour guide Nabil was very professional and thoroughly explained everything to the tiniest detail. Thank you, definitely an experience I will treasure forever :)
Morocco was colorful and beautiful. Our guide Mohammed helped make the trip memorable. I enjoyed visiting the smaller towns more than the big cities . The quaint , vibrant markets and towns had so much character . The food was really delicious and the trip was well planned . A destination with so much charm . I recommend this tour .
A fabulous chance to see so many important sites in Egypt. Cairo you have to do even just to see the pyramids and the Egyptian Museum. We arrived a couple of days earlier and also went to 1) the Palace - interesting but not essential viewing 2) Egyptian Museum so we could see everything as it is literally full of interesting and beautiful pieces and 3) the Islamic Art Museum which was utterly fabulous, well set out and with the option of a free guide as part of your entry. Obviously Luxor was the highlight with so much to take in Karnak and Luxor Temples both immense and the avenue of sphinxes just wow…. The Temple of Hatshepsut is impressive from the front and gives a sense of scale but the real jewels are the Valley of the Kings tombs with their colours and you finally get a sense of what everything before ie all previous sites visited would have looked like back when they were constructed. Hotel in Cairo was in a great location as was the hotel in Luxor as we flew back to Cairo so had an extra night. The cruise ship had seen better days but the room was spacious and the views from it fabulous. Onboard the smell from the bathroom wasn’t the best but we just kept the door closed. Food on board was plentiful and we enjoyed the Egyptian food night one thing is there is no complementary water, juice or tea/coffee at lunch or dinner which was disappointing. Breakfast on the go was too much for one person and so much excess plastic packaging. Definitely the hot air balloon ride was an amazing experience but you did spend more than an hour and a half getting to the launch site via 2 buses and a boat ride so time in the air is limited. Abu Simbel is a fantastic site just to see the entrance with the colossal statues is a must. However we again had limited time and the two temples were super crowded so many people pushing into the inner sanctuary made it difficult to absorb the atmosphere. Why the sites cannot organise a flow of tourists with a roped line in and out and guards ushering you along in single file I do not know. I suppose it is all part of the experience. It is a long day with many hours on a bus but the site is well worth the effort. Big thanks our guides: to Mohammed in Cairo and Wael for the majority of the time, with his enthusiasm, sense of fun and ability to bring to life the history in an excellent participatory way for all ages (mini acting out scenes from history). Also to Taher and Mustafa for all the arrangements in the background we felt very well looked after and you were able to accommodate all our extra asks. Do go you will love it

- Solo Travel in Namibia
Africa's best authentic tailor-made safaris
By Devryn Panaino
Safari Travel Planner
If you like to be around other travelers, the best places to explore as a solo traveler are the most popular ones: Etosha National Park in the north, Sossusvlei in the center, and Swakopmund at the coast .
In each of these places, you’ll find camps and lodges where you can meet up with other travelers, and a host of activities where you can join up with other groups.
In northern Namibia, the Zambezi Region, which is popular with overlanders and backpackers, is another place where you’ll easily be able to meet up with other travelers.
You can look forward to seeing lions, elephants, and rhinos on guided game drives in Etosha National Park, and meeting new friends around the fire at a camp in the Zambezi Region.
Or go Skydiving, sandboarding, drinking beer with locals in Swakopmund, and soaking up the silence and timeless beauty of the desert atop a dune in the sands of Sossusvlei.
Travel Tips for a solo safari in Namibia
The only thing that you need to be aware of as a solo traveler in Namibia is long driving distances in remote areas. You’ll often drive for hours without coming across a gas station or town. Make sure that your lodge or hotel knows to expect you in case you have a breakdown.
It’s also good to tell someone where you’re going if you head off from your lodge or camp on a day hike. If possible, join up with a guided hike or find someone to hike with, as it’s much safer to hike in a pair or a group in case of an emergency.
