How to Arrange Your Bromo Tour (The Complete Guide)

' src=

The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park offers some of the most amazing landscapes in the whole of Indonesia. It is especially beautiful at sunrise as the mist rolls over the valley and the sun rises behind Bromo Volcano. However, arranging a Bromo Tour can be surprisingly difficult. It’s easy to get over charged, stay in the wrong place or make a silly mistake (like not bring a warm coat).

To help you arrange your Bromo trip I created this short guide. The guide covers everything you need to know to arrange a Bromo tour. The guide has been broken down into easy to navigate sections. You can click the link to jump directly to a certain part of the Bromo Tour Guide.

Let’s get started.

Where to Stay

When you visit Bromo you can stay in one of the following three cities; Malang, Surabaya or Probolinggo. Surabaya is the furthest away from Bromo. It is a 90 minute car drive from Surabaya to Mt Bromo. Malang is a little closer. It is a 60 minute car drive from Malang to Mount Bromo. Probolinggo actually overlooks Mount Bromo.

The 3 Mount Bromo Tours

From surabaya: bromo midnight tour.

If you decide to book a hotel in Surabaya you will join the Bromo Midnight tour. The reason it’s called the Surabaya to Bromo midnight tour package is because you get picked up from your hotel at midnight. From Surabaya you will be driven directly to Bromo for sunrise.

From Malang: Bromo Sunrise Tour

The Bromo Sunrise Tour is for people who are staying in Malang (which is closer to Bromo). The driver of your car will pick you up from your hotel in Malang at 3:30am. It’s a one hour and forty minute to 2,5 hours from Malang to the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park at night. During the day it is around 3-3,5 hours journey. To actually visit Bromo you need to swap cars, because only members of the local community can drive the jeeps you need to take to visit the volcano.

From Probolinggo: Bromo Probolinggo Tour

The Bromo Probolinggo tour is the most convenient of the three options. The hotels in Problinggo actually overlook Mt Bromo volcano. If you are staying in Probolinggo then you have the option of either walking to the Penanjakan viewpoint or renting a jeep to take you there. It’s a 3 hour walk from Probolinggo to Penanjakan, which means that you will need to set off at approximately 1:00 am – 2:00 am to reach the viewpoint for sunrise (the walk is almost all uphill).

Visiting Savana Hill. It’s a beautiful green landscape in the wet season.

Mount Bromo Entrance Fee

There is an entrance fee to enter Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park. For Indonesians the price for entrance to the national park is at around Rp30,000 per person. For foreigners there are two price prices. On weekdays the price for the entrance ticket is at around Rp 240,000. On weekends and Indonesian public holidays the cost is at around Rp 340,000.

Jeep Rental

To take the Bromo tour you will need to arrange a jeep rental. There are two different tours you can choose from, the short tour and the long tour. On the short tour you will visit Penanjakan Viewpoint to watch sunrise and climb Mount Bromo Volcano, before returning to your hotel/ driver.

If you go on the long tour you will go to Savana Hill and Whispering Sands (Sea Sands). You can arrange a jeep rental on arrival in Bromo, but it is more convenient and cheaper to pre-book the jeep. All of the jeep rentals at Bromo are pretty much the same model. A Bromo jeep rental can fit up to five passengers. The price for a Bromo jeep rental changes according to the tourist season. See the table below for more information on jeep rental prices.

Mt Bromo Tour

If you take either the Bromo Mindnight or Bromo Sunrise tours you will need to change cars to a jeep to get to Penanjakan. If you are staying in the Bromo National Park area the jeep will pick you up at your hotel. Penanjakan does get really crowded for sunrise. There will be a big crowd. For the best experience visit on a weekday, because it’s not as packed and it’s also cheaper (it’s still quite busy though).

Whichever tour you take, the first place you will stop is Penanjakan viewpoint (or other viewpoints such as King Kong Hill, Cinta Hill, etc). This is where you will watch sunrise from (it’s where everybody takes those beautiful photos that Bromo is so famous for). There’s a perfect 15 minutes or so to take some amazing photos and then it’s over for another day. Those 15 minutes are worth waking up really early in the morning for.

Climbing Bromo

After sunrise the jeep will take you to Bromo crater. It is a 25-minute car drive from Penanjakan to the crater. The jeep will drop you off on the dusty valley floor. From there it’s a relaxing 30-minute walk to the crater. If you have children, or you just want to do something different, you can ride a horse to the crater.

It is an easy climb to the top of Bromo crater. On the final part of the climb there are concrete stairs dug into the side of the crater. From the top of Mount Bromo you can look inside the crater, which is normally smoking. Many locals throw offerings into the crater. The view from the top are really beautiful. If you are on the short tour the driver will take you back to your hotel after climbing Mt Bromo.

The rugged landscape of Whispering Sands.

The Long Bromo Jeep Tour

After you’ve climbed the volcano you will visit the Tengger Sea Sands and the Savanna Hill.  This part of the tour takes around an hour. During the tour you can ask the driver to stop so you can take some photos. The landscape is really impressive. At the Tengger Sand Sea you see the volcanic sand. This area is popular for people who do off road motocross.

In the Savannah area you are surrounded by an island of green (or brown-ish if it is dry season). The visit to these two places is a real chance to see the contrasts in the landscape of Mount Bromo. On the tour of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park you’re guaranteed to take beautiful photos that you’ll want to share with your family and friends.

Arranging a Bromo Tour

The Bromo tour is really special. The view of the sunrise is an unforgettable experience. You can probably understand why I tell all my friends they have to join this tour if they visit Surabaya or Malang or Probolinggo. To help you arrange a tour without the usual hassle I’ve partnered with some local independent drivers and we can take care everything.

Here’s What’s Included in the Package:

  • Pick up from your hotel or the train station/ airport
  • Transport in a comfortable car
  • Experienced local driver
  • Entrance costs for Bromo
  • Drop off at your hotel

FYI Bromo is an active volcano. We do monitor the volcanic activity at the crater. Sometimes people are not allowed to visit the crater when the authorities request the visitors to be 1-3 km away from the crater. You can still enjoy the amazing landscape of Bromo.

I just discovered Mt Bromo while researching for inspiring weekend getaway from Brunei. There is a direct flight to Surabaya from here and I am so tempted to see Mt Bromo. Your article convinced me to visit, but the flock of tourists may change my feeling about visiting. Just want to compliment on your article 🙂

Hi Emily, Thank you for your kind words and the visit to my blog. You should go to Bromo. 🙂 Promise that you will not regret. :p It is pretty amazing!

Great articles! Very inspiring. What is the best way to get from Yogyakarta to Surabaya or Probolinggo? We are leaving in one week to Indonesia 🙂 I’m very excited.

Kind regards, Ayla

Hi Ayla. Thanks for the kind feedback. I’d recommend taking the train from Yogyakarta to Surabaya or alternatively the plane. It really depends on your timetable and budget. If you haven’t done the train before I think it’s worth it though 🙂 Hope that helps.

Thanks for your information. Can you please email me a package for a midnight tour from Surabaya airport?

Hi Anton, We sent you an email on Sept 22. Please let me know if you receive the email ok. Look forward to hearing back from you, Anton.

Can you help me with the tour, i fly from Jog to Surabaya and from Suryabaya i intend to stay at Malang so i can avoid the midnight ride to Bromo, can you help me with best way to get to Malang frm Suryabaya airport. i would like you to help me stay and a tour for Bromo as well, from here i intend to flyout to Bali. appreciate your help

Though on the google maps you can go to Bromo through Wonokitri / Poncokusumo, but it is not the usual route. I personally never tried it. I always go through Probolinggo, this means it takes 3-4 hours drive from Malang to Bromo. From Surabaya to Bromo is 4-5 hours. The best way to travel from Surabaya to Malang is by rent a private car. If you don’t want to do anything in Malang, it is better to go straight from Surabaya to Bromo. When is your travel date? Please get in touch with us through email: [email protected] . Thank you.

Hye Firsta..ur article is very helpful for me to plan my trip to Bromo next April 2018. Im looking forward to experience milky way in Bromo..heard the view was awesome!! Can u give any tips on combining the milky way session with sunrise?will be reaching at Juanda Airport airport around 5:55p.m. Is the camping site at Bromo being recommended anyway?and if it yes, any suggestion on how to rent it for a night?

Hi Sue, I don’t have the experience of camping in Bromo so I don’t know if they have a campsite around the area. My suggestion is to stay overnight at Lava View Lodge, it is one of the best lodges in Bromo in regards to location. From in front of the lodge, you can see the Bromo volcano, Mount Batok, etc. The view is something like this (I took this shot). You can come out from the hotel around 10-11 pm or 1 AM to see the milky way. You can get some rest afterwards and start the sunrise tour with the jeep at 3:30 AM. Hope this helps. If you are interested in arranging the tour with us, complete the form closer to your travel date (1,5 months before is sufficient). Have a good day!

Thanks Firsta for your prompt reply.. the shot is so beautiful!!!

Thanks Sue!

Hello, I am a KITAS holder and i really want to go to brom from surabaya. I have asked to a travel agent and they said I have to pay for bule price for this year (2019). I always have local price in Indonesia (borobudur, bali, komodo island). Is this thing true?

Hi Elizabeth, Sorry for the late reply. Yes, I think started from 2016 or 2017, you can’t get a local price with Kitas anymore.

Hey Firsta, my girlfriend and I have just arrived to an airbnb in Malang and we are looking for a genuine driver willing to take us to either one of these Bromo tours or to a bromo tour followed by Tumpak Sewu. Do you have anyone honest to recommend as most drivers start throwing the randomest numbers out there thinking that we “bule” produce money out of our ass ? And it’s definitely not the case. Please help ???

Hi Benjamin, Riri sent you an email a few days ago, but I think its probably too late. Hope you had a great time in Indonesia.

Dear Firsta,,

Apa khabar, saya physically disabled (using elbow crutches). Is it possible for me to enjoy Mount Bromo trip ?

Hi Rosli, I think it should be fine. The journey to the crater will be challenging. You can take a horse, but you need to hike some stairs. Bromo is also nice to see from afar (from the viewpoint or several points around the sea sands and the savannah, which you don’t need to hike to reach). Take care!

Many tourists want to know the ideal time to visit Mount Bromo to witness its beauty. You can explain that the best time is during the dry season, typically from April to October, when the weather is clear and the sunrise view is spectacular. However, you can also mention that it’s possible to visit year-round but with some weather-related variations in visibility.

Travelers often inquire about the specific attractions and activities included in a Bromo tour. You can provide an overview of the key highlights, such as the sunrise viewpoint at Penanjakan, the Sea of Sand, Bromo crater, and the whispering sands. Visit Mount Bromo Volcano: Everything You Need to Know

Mount Bromo is a 2300-meter-high volcano in Java, Indonesia . A Mount Bromo sunrise tour at this active volcano is the highlight of your trip to Java . It is surrounded by a wide-stretched sea of sand where most visitors drive around with a 4×4 jeep. The volcano is active every 5 years, and the lava always stays inside. Bromo can be visited in many ways, and the visit can be done by young and old. This is everything you need to know about a Bromo tour.

Sunrise at Mount Bromo

In the middle of the night, hundreds of jeeps drive up towards King Kong Hill, where you have the best sunrise view on Mount Bromo. The drive up starts at 3 AM and takes 1 hour.

Another option, instead of a jeep, is to jump on the back of a motorbike.

At the drop-off at King Kong Hill, you will have to walk for about 5 minutes to reach the small stalls with coffee, tea, fried bananas, and a cozy fire. Book your tour here .

Temperature at Bromo

It is freezing cold in the morning at Bromo. The temperature will be between 0-10 degrees with a cold, strong wind. The small fires at the food stalls are, therefore, super comfortable.

What to wear during a Bromo tour?

Be prepared to wear long trousers, socks, closed shoes, a shirt, and a jacket or multiple sweaters. The good thing is that you can rent a jacket at your hotel or at the top of King Kong Hill for ~ 30,000 IDR.

Here are all your hotel options in Bromo .

Best viewpoints Bromo

The best viewpoints are on Gunung Penanjakan. The two popular viewpoints on the mountain are called King Kong Hill and Seruni. From both viewpoints, it will be busy, but you will always have a higher and less crowded point.

Walk to one of the viewpoints and experience a magical sunrise over Bromo, Mount Batok, and Mount Semeru. It will rise around 5:30 AM. Right after sunrise, you can get rid of the jacket or sweater as the temperature rises quickly.

Good to know: There are toilets at both the bottom and top.

Secret Sunset viewpoint

When you are spending the night at Cemoro Lawang, try to visit this location and see the sun disappear behind Bromo.

Visiting the Bromo Crater

Head back to your jeep and get prepared for the drive down towards the Bromo crater. Due to the many jeeps, traffic jams are unfortunately very common so the drive down can take a little longer. Leave the sunrise point as early as possible if you want to skip this traffic jam.

The jeep drives you to the Luhur Poten Hindu Temple at the foot of Mount Bromo. From here, you have to walk about 10 minutes on a dusty road to reach the stairs. Please don’t take a horse for this small walk. These animals are not treated well (learn more about wildlife tourism here).

Tip: Take a scarf or dust mask for all the dust. You really need this!

On top of Bromo

Another 10-minute walk up the stairs, and you are on top, where you can admire the crater. Every few minutes, white smoke spews out from the volcanic crater. Walk along the edge of the crater to a more quiet point. There is a concrete barrier to hold on to; don’t worry!

How to get to Bromo?

Plan to spend one day at Bromo. The entrance fee is 215.000 IDR during the weekday and 315.000 IDR on the weekend. Contact our great driver Azhar on Whatsapp (+6281336042045) . Make sure to tell him you came via ‘Salt in our Hair’ so you’ll get the best price. Visiting Bromo can be done from these three locations:

  • Cemoro Lawang (Bromo town)

visit bromo tour jeep

It is useful to figure out which of the three towns you prefer to stay near Bromo and what your destination will be afterward. If you are planning to visit the Ijen Crater then staying at Probolingo or Cemoro Lawang is the best option. The last thing to decide is whether you are going on a tour to Bromo or not.

Bromo Tour

The easiest and probably best way to visit Bromo is via a tour. A tour with a 4×4 jeep from Malang to Bromo and Ijen Crater is the popular way to go. On your way, visit the Coban Pelangi waterfall, drive through the vegetable mountain range (Ngadas Village).

visit bromo tour waterfall

Follow your way through the Savannah and Sea of Sand until you reach Cemoro Lawang, the village at Bromo. Don’t forget to shoot some cool photos with your jeep! The next morning, you will follow the sunrise Bromo tour as described before .

Note: You can do this trip from Probolingo too but without Savannah, Ngadas and Pelangi.

Price of a Bromo tour

Prices for a tour to Bromo range anywhere from 500,000 to 2,500,000 IDR (30 to 170 USD) depending on the number of days, private or not, and the comfort you are looking for. The usual Bromo tour includes:

  • Coban Pelangi (waterfall)
  • Sea of Sands experience
  • Overnight at Cemoro Lawang
  • Sunrise Top of King Kong Hill
  • Visit the top of the Bromo Crater
  • Breakfast at the hotel

We had a 2-day Bromo and Ijen Crater tour ourselves, and it was 100% worth the money.

Contact our great driver Azhar on Whatsapp (+6281336042045) . Make sure to tell him you came via ‘Salt in our Hair’ so you’ll get the best price.

Visit Bromo without a tour

Traveling on a tight budget? The Bromo National Park can be visited without an organized or private tour. Your best option is to take a local bus from Probolingo to Cemoro Lawang, which takes around 90 minutes. Keep in mind that there is another 10,000 IDR entrance fee at Cemoro Lawang.

Where to Stay

Plan to spend the night at a guesthouse or hotel. The village is entirely focused on accommodating visitors, so you should always be able to find a place. Please note that you may not have hot water at a homestay.

Mount Bromo is an active volcano located in the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park in East Java, Indonesia.

When to Hike to Mount Bromo Volcano?

Indonesia has two seasons: a dry season and a rainy season.

Java is a popular destination all year round!  But the best time to visit Mt Bromo is during the dry season, from May to October.

The busiest time to visit Java is between July and August.  The rainy season in Java runs from November to April.

TIP In high season, we strongly recommend booking accommodation and tours in advance!

How to Get to Mount Bromo

To get to Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, you first need to get to Java Island, Indonesia.

The plane is the most comfortable and fastest way to get to Java! From Bali, you can fly to Java from I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport (airport code DPS).

Java has several airports. The flight takes just 1-1.5 hours, and plane tickets start from 30-40 USD (without luggage) per person for one way.

TIP Use Skyscanner to find cheap flights to Java, Indonesia.

Most people come to Bromo Volcano from Malang, Probolinggo, Yogyakarta, or Surabaya City. Buy your train tickets here.

We have a detailed post on  how to get to Java  with all the information you need.

The boat ticket is only 13,000 IDR (0.85 USD) per person, and the journey takes approximately 30-60 minutes. There is a train station near the Ketapang Ferry Port, from where you can easily get to Malang or Probolinggo and visit the Bromo Volcano. Buy your train tickets here.

How to visit Mount Bromo

Mount Bromo Sunrise Tour

We wanted to make the most of our visit to Bromo Volcano, so we booked a sunrise tour from Malang for the next day. We checked into a hotel where we could sleep for a few hours before the hike. Then, at midnight, we started our tour.

Once you arrive at the jeep parking lot, you can walk to the Penanjakan Bromo viewpoint, where most people watch the sunrise.

But if you want to get the most epic views of Mt Bromo, we recommend hiking up King Kong Hill. It takes approximately 15-20 minutes to reach the summit, depending on your fitness level.

Good to know If you are coming from Probolinggo, you will arrive at Seruni Point, and from there, it is much longer (30-40 minutes) and more difficult to climb to King Kong Hill.

Mount Bromo Sunrise tour

At sunrise, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the 5 volcanoes: Gunung Bromo, Gunung Batok, Gunung Kursi, Gunung Watangan, and Gunung Widodaren. In the background, you can also see the highest peak in Java, Mount Semeru.

Unfortunately, the weather was foggy when we visited! But it was still a fantastic experience to see the beautiful view.

At sunrise at Bromo Volcano, the temperature will be between 5 to 10 °C, and in windy weather, it will be even colder. But the weather gets warm quickly after sunrise, so use sunscreen to avoid sunburn.

TIP Use our map to find the best sunrise viewpoints.

Mt Bromo Crater Rim Hike

After watching the sunrise, we hiked back to the parking lot. Then we went by jeep to the Pura Luhur Poten temple at the foot of Mount Bromo. Although tourists are not allowed inside the temple, you can take some pictures from outside.

The jeeps, sand sea, and horse riders offer fantastic photo opportunities.

Then, after you’ve taken enough photos, walk to the crater entrance through the sea of sand, which is about 20-30 minutes away! We do not recommend riding horses!

As small sand storms may happen, you should wear sunglasses and a light scarf to protect your eyes and mouth.

tour to bromo

The last part of the hike is a 10-minute climb up the steep concrete stairs to the top of the crater. You can do a crater rim walk, but it’s good to know there are few railings, so be careful and stay within the safety area!

Mount Bromo is not the highest peak in Indonesia, but it is an active volcano at 2329 meters above sea level.

Sometimes, it is not allowed to do crater rim walk due to volcanic activity. Unfortunately, it was forbidden at the time of our visit!

You can also visit the Coban Pelangi waterfall on the way to Malang after Mount Bromo. The entrance fee to Coban Pelangi waterfall is 15,000 IDR (1 USD).

Air Terjun Coban Pelangi can be visited daily from 8 AM to 4 PM.

Mount Bromo vs Mount Ijen

One of the most frequently asked questions is which should I visit: Mount Bromo or Mount Ijen? Both volcanoes are located in East Java, Indonesia.

The Bromo volcano tour is more popular than the Kawah Ijen. But make the most of your visit and see the volcanoes on a 3-day tour of Bromo and Ijen.

If you have limited time in Indonesia or are looking for a less challenging hike in Java, we recommend Bromo Volcano.

We think both volcanoes are worth a visit, and you can easily book an organized tour from Bali, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Malang, or Probolinggo that visits both places.

TIP Make the most of your experience by visiting the Ijen and Bromo volcanoes on a  3-day tour from Bali.

Where to Stay near Mount Bromo

Malang is a city in East Java and the perfect base for visiting Mt Bromo. You can spend 2-3 days in Malang, these are our accommodation recommendations.

TIP Alternatively, stay in Cemoro Lawang, the nearest village to Bromo. It takes about 45 minutes to walk from Cemoro Lawang to the foot of Mt Bromo.

What to Pack for Hiking

  • Small backpack
  • Light raincoat
  • Warm clothes
  • Hiking shoes or boots & socks
  • Camera gear
  • Personal medication
  • Local money
  • Hiking poles (If you need it!)

Tips for Visiting

  • Don’t bring unnecessary things with you!
  • You can rent a motorbike in Probolinggo and get to the volcano. But this option is not recommended as the roads are unpaved and slippery!
  • Bring enough local money! You can only pay for the entrance fee, toilets, and horse rides with cash!
  • Wear closed hiking shoes and warm clothes, as the weather is usually cold and windy.
  • As unexpected rain can happen at any time, bring a light raincoat.
  • Allow enough time for hiking, as the trail is steep and slippery. We recommend using a headlamp for safer overnight hiking.
  • The most beautiful sunrise viewpoints of Mount Bromo are King Kong Hill, Penjakan, and Seruni Point.
  • You can rent a jacket, sweater, gloves, and scarf at your accommodation or from locals near the viewpoints.

What are you looking for?

Booking a mount bromo tour in 2024: what you need to know.

Cazzy Magennis

Ah, Bromo. The sunrise views here were the most epic I’ve seen in the world so far.

I can’t begin to describe the beauty.

It’s worth the early start.

Anyway ...I’m getting ahead of myself!

So, you’re thinking of visiting Bromo and going on a Bromo Tour. Well great!

Below I’m going to take you through everything you need to know about visiting Mount Bromo and our top travel tips , whether you opt for a DIY style tour or an organised one.

Brad and I did an organised tour and to be honest we never usually take tours, but decided we should have one for this, and it was the best tour I’ve done, plus it was private...more on that later.

First things first ...

Travellerspoint

What is Mount Bromo?

mount bromo sunrise

Mount Bromo is an active volcano in East Java located in the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. It’s 2,329 in height which doesn’t make it the highest in the area, but certainly the most well known and iconic. If you’re looking to do a Bromo tour, then the chances are you’ve seen the amazing pictures, so you’ll know what you’re dealing with...but if not, then here you go…

How do you get to Mount Bromo?

Well this can be divided into a variety of sections depending on where you are coming from. But if you’re going on a Bromo tour, you’ll be taken on a custom keep that’s made for the conditions, or if you are doing your own DIY thing, you’ll probably have a moped, which isn’t safe...take it from someone who has had an accident.

Getting to Mount Bromo from Malang

This is where Brad and I went from on our Bromo tour and it was super easy. Our tour guide picked us up around 1am and it only took 1.5 hours to get to Bromo, so we had lots of spare time, but it was good to get a spot early, and also grab some drinks around the fire at night. We got to mingle with other travellers too.

If you DIY it you can rent a moped in Malang for around 80,000 but they might not want you to drive it on the sea of sand...more on that later.

Getting to Mount Bromo from Yogyakarta

You can’t do a sunrise tour from here. You’ll need to either get the train from Yogyakarta to Malang and do your Bromo tour from there. OR you can fly from Jogja to Malang too and the same idea as above.

Tour: Check out this tour that combines Mount Bromo and Ijen Crater

Getting to Mount Bromo from Surabaya

Mount Bromo is located 4 hours drive from Surabaya, this means if you’re heading in the morning for a sunrise tour, you’re going to have to leave late the night before. Whilst I have no doubts that people do probably do this, I think it’s worth trying to get to a closer town and going from there.

Tour: You can book a sunrise tour from Surabaya here

Getting to Mount Bromo from Probolinggo

This is the closest area to Mount Bromo if you decide to DIY your tour and go via your own moped. It’s about a 1.5 hour drive to the park from here. But again I warn you about the sand and be wary that you might have to “walk” your bike. We have seen quite a few people doing this and it will eat into your time.

Should you do a Bromo Tour or DIY it?

jeep at mount bromo

This is the big question, should you do a Bromo tour or do it yourself?

Okay, so when Brad and I do any sort of activity, we always like to do it ourselves without a tour guide as they tend to rip you off. But after I did some research into doing Bromo by yourself, I didn’t think it was worth it.

Basically when you are getting to Mount Bromo, you drive through a “sand of sea” that’s literally in pitch black and there are no directions to where you need to go. Hence the reason why only certain types of jeeps are allowed in the park.

Imagine a moped on sand, and think about what it will do, it will get stuck and it will skid and you will be at risk of coming off. I came off a moped due to skidding in gravel and had to get stitches in my knee. Yes sand isn’t gravel, I’m just indicating the danger.

If you’ve never rode a moped before then do NOT, I repeat do NOT ride it for the first time in sand. It would be the height of stupidity.

But if you’re confident enough to skid and perhaps falls and drive in the dark with no directions, then go ahead. When we drove by with our jeep, (which even got stuck in the sand at one point, btw), we have seen a few people on mopeds “walking” them because they kept getting stuck.

So, basically, I think it’s worth doing a tour. Group tours aren’t our thing either, so we opted for a private tour because it was only a couple of pounds extra. Some tour companies will charge you double for a private tour, but not our guy!

Other benefits of doing a Bromo tour is that your guide will know something about the area, can take cool pictures of the two of you (if you’re travelling as a couple like Brad and I), and even take you to some secret photo spots, which our guide did. Actually our guide LOVED taking travel photos . It felt like having a photographer with me through the day, which was awesome.

We also had breakfast included and actually Brad and I always tend to “complete” activities a lot quicker than others, which is another reason we don’t like group tours (we have to sit around and wait for everyone else), but with our private Bromo tour we could leave as quickly as we wanted.

Where will you visit on a Bromo Tour?

Bromo Mountain

You’re first spot will be the sunrise spot, wherever that may be. You’re second spot will be the sea of sands as you drive through, you’ll probably stop at another Bromo viewpoint, then you’ll head up the Bromo Crater.

You’re last spot will be Teletubbies Hill and you can even add on a waterfall to your tour for an extra fee of 100,000 if you wish which is called Coban Pelang. We didn’t so I can’t say how good it is.

When is the best time to do a Bromo tour?

The best season to do a Bromo tour is during the dry season of Indonesia. This runs from April to October. Brad and I visited in August and the weather was perfect. No rain in site and the views were amazing.

How much does a Bromo tour cost?

our guide a mount bromo

When I was pricing around for a Bromo tour, there was a wide range of prices that were coming back to me.

Some people were taking the piss and others were just expensive. So we went to our hotel in Malang, Whiz Prime and asked them about organising a tour. They put us in contact with Mr John who owns the Bromo sunrise tour company that’s located in Malang city centre. He offered two prices:

For a group tour: 650,000 per person (Around $45)

For a private tour: 750,000 per person (Around $52)

All including guide, entrance, transport and breakfast. And it was a great price and worth every penny we spent. This was the most expensive thing we paid for in all of Indonesia, so I was more than happy to pay it.

This is his whatsup number, if you want to book!

Should I do a Bromo Sunrise tour?

secret photo mount bromo

Yes, yes and yes. Whilst I am sure it’s nice to visit at other times of the day, you cannot go to Mount Bromo and not do a sunrise tour. It would be one of the biggest regrets ever.

Where are the best places to watch the sunrise on a Bromo Tour?

brad at bromo tour

When you go on a Bromo tour with a group, I would assume that there is a set destination for your sunrise spot. However, Brad and I went on a private tour and our driver basically suggested a few spots to us and let us decide.

He recommend Kong Hill, based on how busy that day was, and whilst Kong Hill is super busy, all you need to do is climb the sand hill a little bit and you’ll find spots with less people so you can enjoy your sunrise moment in peace.

Other Bromo tour sunrise spots include:

What is the nearest airport to Mount Bromo?

Malang is the nearest airport to Mount Bromo. Malang is a pretty cool city to explore with its many great surroundings, so if you want to spend a few days there too, you can check out my post on the best things to do in Malang for some inspiration.

How long does it take to climb Mount Bromo?

top of crater at mount bromo

Even though Mount Bromo is located pretty high, you don’t climb on that. You’re already way up high, so the actual climb is around 30 minutes, depending on your fitness level.

It’s a fairly easy climb, but the thing that makes it challenging is the darn sand. It’s hard to get a grip in sand, so that’s why it can take a little longer getting up.

When you’re up there, you’ll literally on the edge of a crater that has sulphur down there. There is NO barrier to protect you after a certain point, so be super careful if you walk past other people and make sure there is no strong wind.

This make for an epic drone shot, but I wouldn’t do anything stupid on the edge of a crater. Just saying!

You can also get donkeys to bring you up to the crater, bar the last steps, (which are so dodgy and need re-doing- be careful), but please don’t use them. I have no idea how much they cost, but the donkeys don’t need it.

Is it safe to visit Mount Bromo?

Yes. Of course it’s an active volcano, so you’re probably thinking “what if it erupts?” well the national park monitors the activity of the volcano and if activity is too high etc, then you won’t be allowed to visit. So don’t worry, it’s safe to visit.

What do you wear to Mount Bromo?

cazzy at bromo touur

Warm clothes! It’s very cold up there before the sun rises. But if like Brad and I, you didn’t exactly pack your winter gear on a trip to Indonesia, well you’ll be happy to know that you can rent a thick winter coat up there for 30,000 IDR which is awesome.

You can also buy hats at 30,000, and they were a great investment and super cosy. It would have been such a horrible experience if we were not warm in some way. But you can also stay warm at the little fires they build at all the cafes.

You can buy coffee and tea for 5,000 to help stay warm too. It’s not overpriced, which is great.

Bromo tours: Booking online

If you prefer to have your tour organised ahead of time, then there are a few online tours I recommend.

If you're coming from Bali, then this tour combines Bromo and Ijen Crater into a 3 day tour. You can actually see these volcanoes from North West Bali on a clear day!

From Malang, you can opt for this tour which is well priced and got great reviews!

Mount Bromo Packing List

Just a list of a few items to remember to bring with you on your Bromo tour:

  • A good camera: we used a Canon G7 Mark II
  • A tripod if you want to timelapse
  • Money for hot drinks and food
  • Decent shoes you can walk in sand with and don’t mind getting covered in sand

So there you have it, my guide on everything you need to know about a Bromo sunrise tour. I hope you’ve found this most useful and hopefully I’ve answered most of the questions you are wondering, but if not, just drop a comment below and I’d be happy to help.

Happy travels.

MT. BROMO TRAVEL GUIDE (ITINERARY + BUDGET)

by thepinay solobackpacker | Jan 12, 2019 | Bromo , Indonesia , Itinerary , Travel Guide | 0 comments

Here’s a detailed Bromo itinerary and budget. I also created a DIY Bromo Travel Guide and how to do the Bromo sunrise tour from Cemoro Lawang or Surabaya.

Rugged peaks of the Tennger mountains pierce the morning mist in Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. The view here during sunrise is mesmeric, as the whispering lava sand and the nearby massif are draped by fog. This popular volcanic complex in East Java is composed of the jaw-dropping Mt.Batok, Mt.Bromo, Mt.Semeru, Mt. Widodaren, and the Tengger Caldera. It is one of the first Indonesian Parks established as a recreational and tourism resource because of its breath-snatching scenery, for watershed protection, and as safeguard zone when the volcanoes here erupt.  Its territory, which is dappled with casuarina trees, is actually composed of nature reserved and other protected areas with endemic plants and typical Java wildlife.

Over the years, Mt.Bromo has attracted throngs of tourists, but despite the crowd it brings, it remains undeniably stunning.  The name Bromo is believed to be derived from the Sanskrit word “Brahma”, the highest god in the Hindu religion, so, it’s actually a holy mountain for the locals.  Here’s a detailed Mt. Bromo travel guide with sample Mt.Bromo itinerary and budget to help you plan your trip. You can do it by joining a Mt.Bromo tour (group of private tour) or by doing a DIY Bromo travel.

ABOUT MT. BROMO

bromo blog 41

The Tenggerese drew comfort from a legend that the same great lava flows that occasionally devastated their farms also protect their land. The Tenggerese (also Tengger) is a small group of indigenous people of Java living on the slopes of the Tengger mountains.  They are believed to be the only surviving bloodline of the Hindu-Majapahit Empire. But when the Dutch arrived and established plantation agriculture here, converting sprawling lands into the production of sugarcane and coffee, the Tenggerese were increasingly forced up into the mountains.

Based on anecdotes, sometime in the 14th century, Roro Anteng (the Princess of Majapahit Empire) with her husband Joko Seger fled to Bromo when their kingdom was gradually replaced by Islamic Rule. They ruled the place and named it “Tengger”, derived from their last name. While they formerly call their religion “Buddha Jawa”, their beliefs are said to be closer to Hinduism than Buddhism.

Despite the Kingdom’s success, the couple was unable to conceive an heir. So, they prayed to the gods of Bromo to give them successors. The gods granted their request, but in return they need to throw their last born into the crater as a sacrifice. The couple then had many children. But when their last child named Prince Kesuma was born. They refused to make him as an offer. This anger the gods and Mt.Bromo rumbled and spewed fire, fumes, and ash. This claimed the life of Prince Kesuma who was dragged to the volcano’s crater.

To appease the gods, the couple and their descendants held an annual ceremony called Kasodo at the temple on the foot of Bromo. On the 14th day, they all climbed the volcano and threw their offerings to the still angry crater.  This ceremony is still practiced today, as Mt.Bromo continue to simmer and spew white wisps of smoke rising into thin air.

BROMO PRE-TRAVEL GUIDE

Mt.Bromo climate

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT MT.BROMO:  The best season to visit Mt. Bromo is during the dry season – April to October. And the best months to visit are May to August with lesser chance of rain.

BROMO CURRENCY AND MONEY EXCHANGE: The currency here is Indonesian rupiah (IDR), you can exchange money at Surabaya airport or at money exchange centers. Another popular base for Bromo tour is Malang, about 1 hour away. There’s also an airport here but it’s quite hard to find flights. There’s a train station too, but the one in Probolingo is nearer to Bromo.

[wp-svg-icons icon=”home” wrap=”i”]   3.  Probolingo

This base is closer to Bromo compared to the two above. This is where the bus and train stations are located. There are also hotels in the area.

[wp-svg-icons icon=”home” wrap=”i”]  4.  Ngadisari

This village is about 3 km back towards Probolingo.  This is where I stayed during my 1 st visit to Bromo in 2010, because the tour package I availed in Yogyakarta booked me in Yoschi Hotel , a rustic hotel with lots of character.

[wp-svg-icons icon=”home” wrap=”i”]   5.  Wonokitri

Also closer to Mt.Bromo, but I don’t have much information on this.

[wp-svg-icons icon=”home” wrap=”i”]  6.  Cemoro Lawang

This is the recommended area to stay for those on a budget as it is peppered with cheap homestays. This is also the closest to Mt. Bromo, located at the tip of the Tengger crater. Our hotel is located in this area on our most recent trip.

We stayed in Jiwa Jiwa Resort, a mid-ranged hotel in Cemoro Lawang.

BROMO TRAVEL GUIDE

How to get to mt.bromo.

bromo blog 20

OPTION 1 (*Recommended if you have limited time.)

If you opt for this route, I recommend you do this if you are traveling alone:

  • Fly from Jakarta  or Bali to Surabaya via Airasia.
  • Join a group tour to Bromo.

Here’s a detailed Bromo Travel Guide from Surabaya:

  By Plane:

Juanda International Airport (Surabaya Airport) serves Sidorajo Regency in East Java.  It is located in Sedati, about 20 km drive from the city center. It is one of the nearest airports to Mt.Bromo, along with the Malang Airport (however, the flights to Malang from other parts of Indonesia is irregular).

If you are coming from Jakarta, Airasia has direct flights to Surabaya, the earliest flight leaves at 5:00 AM. Fare starts at $54.84 (₱/IDR728.20/SGD 73.62/MYR 446.62) and travel time is about 1 hour and 20-35 minutes.  Book here: Airasia.com

To get to Mt.Bromo by DIY travel, from Surabaya, you have to make your way to the town of Probolingo and then Cemoro Lawang.

SURABAYA AIRPORT TO SURABAYA CITY CENTER

1.By Bus: There are several buses from Surabaya Airport to Surabaya City Center.  Fare is IDR 30,000 (₱111,$2,SGD 2.88, MYR 8.72)  and travel time is about 50 minutes.

Bus Line 1: Surabaya Airport to Purabaya Station

Bus Line 2: Surabaya Airport to Ttanjung Perak Station

Bus Line 3: Surabaya Airport to Bunder Gresik Station

*Purabaya Station is the main bus station in Surabaya, with buses heading to Bromo and other parts of Surabaya.

2.By Private Car: If you want a hassle-free transfer, you can hire a private car to transfer you from the Surabaya Airport (Juanda Airport) to your hotel in Surabaya. Depending on the vehicle, it’s good for 2-3 and 4-5 passengers. Inclusive of driver, gas, toll fee, parking fee, and airport fee.

[wp-svg-icons icon=”checkmark-circle” wrap=”i”] BOOK HERE

3.By Taxi: Fixed coupon cabs are available at Surabaya Airport. Travel time to the city center is about 40 minutes. Blue Bird Taxi are the most reliable.

4.By Ride Sharing: Gojek and Grab are available in Surabaya.

SURABAYA TO BROMO

By Tour:   Tour packages also abound in Surabaya to Mt.Bromo, usually include hassle-free transfer to Sukapura village or Cemoro Lawang where you ride the 4×4 jeep to Mt.Penanjakan Hill for the Mt.Bromo sunrise tour, and then transfer back to your hotel in Surabaya. I would recommend this if you are alone and you have limited time since you no longer have to deal with the touts when transferring between Probolingo and Cemoro Lawang. This tour package will end up cheaper if you are a solo traveler than doing DIY tour to Bromo from Surabaya that will involve staying overnight in Cemoro Lawang.

[wp-svg-icons icon=”checkmark-circle” wrap=”i”] RESERVE BROMO TOUR HERE

By DIY Travel: If you plan to do a DIY Tour, here’s a step by step guide from Surabaya to Probolingo to Cemoro Lawang. Take note though that you will end up paying more than joining a tour package from Surabaya especially if you are a solo traveler, but if you want to soak in the atmosphere in Bromo and you want to do the tour at your own pace, by all means, do it DIY.

1.Go to Purabaya Bus Station in Surabaya .

2.At Purabaya Bus Station, ride a bus or minibus to Probolinggo . Travel time is about 3 hours.

3.At Probolingo, make your way to Bayuangga Bus Terminal .

4.At Bayuangga Bus Terminal, change to minibus to Cemoro Lawang. Fare is roughly IDR 35,000 per person. But the minibus only leaves once full, they need about 15 passengers. If you miss the bus or you can no longer wait for the bus to get full, you can pay for the other seats (around IDR 525,000 for the whole minibus), or split that cost with other tourists. If you miss the bus, you can go with those private taxi or bemo (minivan) to Cemoro Lawang. Prepare around IDR 350,000 for 1 taxi or bemo, depending on your haggling skill. Travel time is about 1.5 hours.

5. The minibus will stop over at the ticket office where passengers need to pay IDR 10,000 each as entrance fee to Cemoro Lawang .

6.At Cemoro Lawang, look for your hotel or homestay.

7. At Cemoro Lawang, rent a 4 x 4 jeep or go hike to Penanjakan Hill, the sunrise viewpoint. Touts will offer you the 4 x 4 jeepney, it’s up to you if you want to take this, prepare around IDR for 1 jeep, good for 3 persons.

Otherwise, you can hike for about 1 to 1.5 hours to the sunrise viewpoint. Ask for directions from your hotel staff. The 4×4 jeep will usually pick up tourists for the Bromo sunrise tour around 2:00 AM. If you are a solo traveler, you may also join group tours for 4×4 jeep instead of paying for the entire jeep, inquire with the travel agencies, your hotel or the touts.

Whether you will go by 4 x 4 jeep, motorcycle, or walk on foot, 2:00 – 2:30 AM is the recommended time to start your tour.

8.Pay the entrance fee for Mt.Bromo National Park. For foreigners, the fee is IDR 218,000 during weekdays and IDR 320,000 on weekends and holidays. For locals, fee is IDR 28,000 on weekdays and IDR 38,000 on holidays and weekends.

IMPORTANT: There are a lot of touts in bus stations in Probolingo to Cemoro Lawang, the yellow minibus will drop you at the private van or bus terminals owned by local tour agencies and convince you to take the “taxi” or bemo (minivan) with them (they do this because they get a commission for every passenger that books with the the tour operator). You can take it if you want, if not, just follow the directions above and make sure you use your Google Maps to check of you are actually at the public bus terminal called Bayuangga Bus Terminal. However, the public buses leaving for Cemoro Lawang will only leave once full. It could take up to 3:00 PM, after that, you have no choice but to avail of  those private van or bus. Use your haggling skills if that’s the case.

OPTION 2 (By Train + DIY Tour)

bromo blog 49

SURABAYA TO PROBOLINGO TO CEMORO LAWANG

If you’ll do this, here’s the summary:

1.Train from Yogyakarta to Bromo , or if you are already in Surabaya, you can get on the train to Probolinggo.  But you have to head first to Surabaya Gubeng Station, about 20 km from Surabaya Airport.  You can go there by taxi or by ride sharing app – Grab.

2.Upon arrival at Probolingo Train Station, exit the station and walk opposite to the bus station.

3.Ride the yellow minibus to Bayuangga Station in Probolinggo.

4.Ride bemo to Cemoro Lawang.

5.Pay Cemoro Lawang entrance fee.

6.Check-in at hotel/homestay

7.Book Bromo sunrise group tour or rent a 4×4 jeep.

8.Pay Mt.Bromo National Park fee.

9.Bromo tour.

Here’s the comprehensive travel guide to Bromo from Yogyakarta and Probolinggo.

By Tour: When I first visited Mt.Bromo in 2010, I just joined a group tour package from Yogyakarta that includes an overnight stay in one of the hotels in Probolingo, one-way transfer to Probolingo, and Mt.Bromo sunrise tour via 4×4 jeepney. It was hassle-free, since you don’t have to deal with the touts. You can inquire the rates from tour agencies in Yogyakarta.

By Train: There’s no Airasia flight from Yogyakarta to Surabaya, so, you either have to take a flight back to Jakarta and fly to Surabaya from there (like we did), or take the train from Yogyakarta to Probolingo.  Travel time is about 8 hours.

There are 3 train stations in Yogyakarta with trains to Probolingo:

Tugu Station (Yogyakarta): This train station is in the city center (near Maliboro Street and the backpacker street of Sosrowijayan) with economy, executive, and business class trains.

Lempuyangan Station: Also located in Yogyakarta city but a little farther from the city center and Tugu Station. Check Google Maps. This is where you can board economy trains.

Wates Station: Has economy trains to Probolingo.

Economy Class(Lempuyangan) – starts at ₱257.49 (IDR 70,000/$4.96/SGD 7)

Economy Class (Tugu Station) – starts at ₱827.63 (IDR 225,000/$15.96/SGD 21.47)

Business Class – starts at ₱827.63 (IDR 225,000/$15.96/SGD 21.47)

Executive Class – starts at ₱1,121.90 (IDR 305,000/$21.63/SGD 29.11)

Here’s the train schedule for Yogyakarta to Probolinggo:

Take note that the train station indicated below is the departure train station, all trains will arrive at Probolingo Station. Rates may change without prior notice. The earlier you book, the lower the price.

Here’s the train schedule for Probolinggo to Yogyakarta:

Take note that the train station indicated below is the arrival train station, all trains will depart from Probolingo Station. Rates may change without prior notice. The earlier you book, the lower the price.

PROBOLINGO TO CEMORO LAWANG

bromo 90

Here’s a step by step guide from Probolingo to Cemoro Lawang.

  If arriving by train:

  • Train from Yogyakarta to Probolingo . IDR 70,000 – IDR 305,000
  • Arrive at Probolingo Train Station.
  • Exit the train station. Walk to the opposite side and look for the yellow mini-buses to Bayuangga Bus Terminal . Ignore the touts saying those buses won’t go to the terminal or will leave late. They will talk you to take the private taxi where they will get a commission.
  • Ride yellow minibus to Bayuangga Bus Terminal. Fare is IDR 5,000 – IDR 25,000 per person depending on your haggling skill. Transit time is about 10 minutes. Check Google Maps or the Map.me app to make sure you are the right bus terminal. The driver might drop you in front of a tour agency instead of the bus terminal itself, insist on being dropped off at the Bayuangga Bus Terminal, which is further down the road on the left side.
  • At Bayuangga Bus Terminal, change to minibus to Cemoro Lawang. Fare is roughly IDR 35,000 per person. But it only leaves once full, they need about 15 passengers. If you miss the bus or you can no longer wait for the bus to get full, you can pay for the other seats (around IDR 525,000 for the whole minibus), or split that cost with other tourists. If you miss the bus, you can go with those private taxi or bemo (minivan) to Cemoro Lawang. Prepare around IDR 350,000 for 1 taxi or bemo, depending on your bargaining skill. Travel time is about 1.5 hours.
  • The minibus will stop over at the ticket office where passengers need to pay IDR 10,000 per person as entrance fee to Cemoro Lawang.
  • At Cemoro Lawang, look for your hotel or homestay.
  • Touts will offer you the 4 x 4 jeepney . It’s up to you if you want to take this, prepare around IDR for 1 jeep, good for 3 persons. Otherwise, you can hike for about 45-60 minutes to the sunrise viewpoint.
  • Pay the entrance fee for Mt.Bromo National Park. For foreigners, the fee is IDR 218,000 during weekdays and IDR 320,000 on weekends and holidays. For locals, fee is IDR 28,000 on weekdays and IDR 38,000 on holidays and weekends.

IMPORTANT: There are a lot of touts when doing a DIY travel from Probolingo to Cemoro Lawang, the yellow minibus will drop you at the private van or bus terminals owned by local tour agencies and convince you to take the “taxi” or bemo (minivan) with them. This makes it quite confusing and unfortunately many foreign travelers call this as a scam. You can take it if you want or just follow the directions above and make sure you use your Google Maps to check of you are actually at the public bus terminal called Bayuangga Bus Terminal. However, the public buses leaving for Cemoro Lawang will only leave once full. It could take up to 3:00 PM, after that, you have no choice but to avail of  those private van or bus.

You can try using Grab, but as per reviews on Tripadvisor, it only works around Probolingo. If you try to book to Cemoro Lawang (around IDR 180,000 ), the driver reportedly usually cancel the booking once near and will try to haggle the price with you. Some will also request you to walk a few meters away from the bus terminals for fear of retaliation from the touts or the bus drivers of private transport companies. They might charge extra, or ask for about IDR 550,000 to take you to Cemoro Lawang.

GETTING AROUND MT. BROMO

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by gael | thepinaysolobackpacker (@thepinaysolobackpacker) on Jan 11, 2019 at 7:05pm PST

1.By 4×4 jeep. Good for 3-4 persons. The most convenient. The sunrise tour typically starts at 2:00 AM to 2:30 AM. Here’s the rate of the 4 x4 jeep (Toyota Land Cruisers) in Bromo, good for 3 -4 persons. Use your haggling skills.

2.By motorcycle . I wouldn’t recommend this unless you are with a local driver or you’re are a professional driver because the trail is really rocky, bumpy, and there’s a lot of 4×4 jeeps on the road.

3.By walking. If your hotel is in Cemoro Lawang, you can walk for about 1 hour to 1.5 hours to the sunrise viewpoint on Penanjakan Hill. If you have the energy, then by all means, do this. But this could take up your time. Make sure you bring a flashlight or headlamp, wear sunscreen and face masks because of the dust. If you want to go to the crater, you can ride a motorcycle from Penanjakan Hill  for about IDR 50,000 ((₱184 – $4 – SGD 5) or hike all the way down.

There are 2 popular sunrise viewing point for Mt.Bromo:

  1.Penanjakan Hill

2. 2 nd Viewpoint down Penanjakan Hill

There’s a fee for the Mt.Bromo National Park:

THINGS TO DO IN MT.BROMO

If you avail of the 4 x 4 jeepney tour, there are 2 kinds of tours:

Short Tour: Bromo Sunrise (Penanjakan Hill)+ Bromo Crater

Long Tour: Bromo Sunrise + Viewing Deck 2 + Lava Sand + Bromo Crater + Savannah Hill

Here are the things to do and attractions in Bromo.

1.Watch the sunrise: When visiting Bromo, do the sunrise tour because it’s pretty dreamy when the weather is good. You can witness the surreal sea of clouds surrounding the Bromo massif. It’s pretty dramatic if you ask me. However, be prepared for the crowd. It is pretty crowded even on regular days. Much more on weekends and holidays.

bromo blog 30

TIP: There’s a secluded spot below the paved viewing deck at Penanjakan Hill, but it is pretty slippery and dark. So, if you plan to go there, be very careful. Make sure you have a headlamp or flashlight. Not recommended for the elderly and kids.

2.Photo op at the Lava Sand – Sea of ash and sand surrounding Mt.Bromo. Great spot for photo op.

bromo blog 44

3.Climb the Bromo Crater  – Yes, you can actually climb Mt.Bromo, on foot or by riding a horse  half-way to the volcano.

bromo blog 46

4.Stop Over at the Savannah – If you’re going for the long tour in Bromo, you will stop at the Savannah Hill. It’s a stunning, green landscape that reminds me of  the hills of Batanes. One of my favorite spots in Mt.Bromo.

Stack up cash when visiting Bromo, everything is on cash basis.

Bromo sunrise tours usually starts at 2:30 AM, so if you are arriving late in the afternoon or at night in Cemoro Lawang, you need to find a 4×4 jeep for rent as soon as you arrive.

Based on the itinerary above, if you are a solo traveler, the most practical and cheaper option if you have limited time is to fly to Surabaya via Airasia, book a budget hotel in Surabaya, and then join the group tour to Mt.Bromo.

Indonesia is located in the Pacific volcanic belt and is known as the country of ten thousand islands. There are many active volcanoes here, in which, two famous tourist destinations around the world are Bromo volcano and Ijen volcano. Talking about the journey to discover and conquer volcanoes in Asia, there is no place as attractive as in Indonesia.

Mount Bromo travel blog: Where is Bromo volcano, what is beautiful?

Indonesia is known as a country with a lot of volcanoes. Bromo volcano is one of them, located west of Java island and about 100km from Surabaya city. Bromo volcano is 2,392 m high, famous as one of the 5 most beautiful and active volcanoes in the world.

Mount Bromo is located in the east of Java, Indonesia. Not far from Bali, so often when going to Bali for a long time, it is recommended to spend 1.5 days to explore Mount Bromo, which is especially interesting. You can also spend an extra day if you want to experience the colorful nature of Bromo slowly.

tour to bromo

What makes the unmistakable special and attractiveness of Mount Bromo to tourists is probably the pristine natural beauty. Coming here, you will be able to see firsthand the lava, fossils boiling fervently inside an active volcano. Coming to Bromo, you can also explore the View Point. This is considered a beautiful sunrise viewing spot on Mount Penanjakan.

This is an extremely active volcano and its unpredictable eruptions are unpredictable. The moon-like gray landscape around Bromo is the clearest indication of this erratic behavior. Lava destroyed everything around the crater and left a bleak landscape. However, it contrasts sharply with the lush green of the surrounding trees and plants that still rise strongly on the other mountains. The sunrise at the volcano is one of the most interesting and impressive experiences when traveling to Indonesia.

MountBromo_indonesia

Bromo Volcano belongs to Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park covers an area of about 800 square kilometers… With a height of 2,392 meters, Bromo is not the tallest volcano, but it is a tourist destination attracting tourists from all over the world.

Mount Bromo guide: When is the best time to visit Bromo?

The climate of Indonesia is not like Vietnam when the rainy season is from May to October. In Indonesia, this is the time of the dry season with beautiful sunny weather and the freshest air of the year. Therefore, this is the most appropriate time for you to make the trip to conquer Mount Bromo.

mount bromo indonesia 23

If you go at this time, the journey to the top of Mount Bromo is not only easy bu you can also see the natural landscape here in the most clear way. At the same time, you won’t experience nasty rains or harsh storms. This will make your trekking journey easier and more convenient to see the fresh natural picture at Bromo volcano.

Mount Bromo travel guide: How to get to Mount Bromo, how to go to Mount Bromo?

tour to bromo

There is no direct flight to Mount Bromo, so there are 2 ways to get here.

By road is only applicable from Bali. From Bali go very far to the western end of the island to catch the ferry to Java and then continue to Bromo, very far. It’s both long and tiring, so I don’t advise you to go this way, take a domestic flight is much faster and better.

If your time is tight or come from far away, then take a flight is a good choice.

  • Departure points: Jakarta or Bali
  • Destination: Surabaya or Malang Airport.

Surabaya airport is very far away but has many arrival routes, and Malang is a small airport, not many direct arrivals. But from Bali and Jakarta, there are direct flights here.

If you want to explore around Surabaya, then come here or head straight to Malang to get to Bromo which is closer and more convenient way.

Coming to Bromo most of the time, it is best to come early in the morning to see the sunrise, so most of the tours take guests to the volcano by Jeep, or if you want, you can go for a walk.

If you don’t have time and don’t get tired, just like me: Take the tour for quickly. Tour prices also depend on where you stay. For example: going from Malang, departing at 12am and the price I paid was 500,000 IDR (if going with 3 people but don’t want to join a tour, it’s around 600,000 IDR).

tour to bromo

Tips: Cemoro Lawang is the main “base” for excursions to Mount Bromo. Probolinggo is the best place to get to this village. It is best to take a bus from Surabaya to Probolinggo city, it takes about 3 hours, from Malang a little less than 30 minutes. There is also a bus route to Probolinggo from Yogyakarta, but the trip takes more than 10 hours. If you depart from Surabaya, you should take the train and then take the bus.

Or if you stay in Cemoro Lawang, very close to reach Bromo. Then where to stay?

Mount Bromo blog: Where to stay?

tour to bromo

There are 3 places to stay:

Suitable for those who come from Malang airport, convenient to visit and explore some places in the city: But it’s far from Bromo, so take the tour is more expensive and must go from night (1am) – I chose to stay in Malang. In addition, Malang is also a fairly large city, the food is also diverse.

tour to bromo

When I was in Malang, I stayed at the Grandmas Plus Hotel Legian ( Agoda.com or Booking.com ) – a pretty big hotel located in the city center of Malang, professional service, clean rooms. I didn’t pay attention when using the laundry service, they charged by each item, so I was charged a laundry fee of nearly $45 (while I thought, it was charged by kg). A not good impression, but it was my fault, so I still recommend this place, you can check out.

Check out more top and best hotels in Malang on Agoda.com or Booking.com .

Cemoro Lawang

This is a small town right next to the Bromo volcano viewpoint, this area is very beautiful (see photo) and very close to the volcano. If you do not explore Malang and do not mind traveling far, you can come here from Malang or Surabaya airport. From Surabaya to here is about 140km, Malang is about 50, 60km.

If your journey does not includes Malang, you should choose Cemoro Lawang as your place to stay. Peace and poetic beauty of Cemoro Lawang will definitely make your vacation combined with adventure more interesting!

This is a small village in the back of Mount Bromo (on the way from Malang). This place is called the back door of Bromo volcano by backpackers, so it is suitable for those who like to explore the volcano with “two legs”. From here, it is only about ten kilometers from the volcano, but the way is not easy and no matter where you are, you have to get to the viewpoint in Ceromo Lawang. So, I think you should stay in Malang and Ceromo Lawang. If you don’t mind going far, stay in Malang for a day and then come to Ceromo Lawang.

How to visit Mount Bromo & memorable experiences in Mount Bromo

This is my itinerary for you refer to when going from Bali because traveling to Indonesia people often think of visiting Bali first, but going to Bromo is usually a combination.

You can fly from Vietnam to Jakarta and then from Jakarta to Bromo (via Surabaya or Malang).

As for me: There is a direct flight from Bali to Malang, I had an afternoon in Malang to explore around, especially around Malang has the colorful village (rainbow village) of Jodipan (Kampung Warna-Warni Jodipan). This is like a slum in Malang, then suddenly the government planned by change its appearance houses with… paint.

So, now it looks quite eye-catching, a tourist destination. Pretty good idea to increase people’s income. But really when I visited it was still dirty and… slum.

Since, I only had an afternoon, I didn’t have much time to explore more, so I just walked around the hotel and booked a tour (I booked via my friend Dani who was very enthusiastic, renting a private car for 4 people only about 500,0000 IDR / person – Contact him via Whatsapp to ask and bargain: +62 856-3576-250), I went to bed at 8 o’clock at night because around 1am, the jeep picked me up at the hotel to Bromo in time for dawn.

tour to bromo

My group was expected with 4 people, but 1 person could not go, so there were 3, not counting the driver and 1 tour guide. Actually, the guide did not give much guidance :)). About 3, 4 hours after going through a jugged long road, we also reached the top opposite Bromo to wait for the dawn.

tour to bromo

This is the most beautiful viewpoint to watch Bromo and the sunset from above. At 6:30am, we went down, the tour guide took us to another viewpoint nearby which was also very beautiful and important, there was no one. Next was to cross the pass like a snake with clouds like a fairyland to go down to get closer to the volcano.

tour to bromo

The first point (below) is the Black Desert (black sand desert).

tour to bromo

You can judge for yourself by looking at the photos, but I don’t have anything to judge other than the word beautiful. After Black Desert, we climbed to Mount Bromo. From the parking lot, climbing to the top is quite far and high, if you are not in a hurry and afraid of getting tired, you can walk. I rented a horse with a price of about $5 per person both going back and forth.

tour to bromo

Go to Mount Bromo to see with your own eyes how the volcano is, how it works and be especially careful not to fall back down, maybe gone. Note that there is a lot of volcanic ash around so clothes will be very dirty and remember to wear a mask.

tour to bromo

After dawn and climbing the mountain, on the way back, you will pass through a valley called Savanah to take pictures. Actually, I didn’t find it very impressive, it was okay to look at, so I stayed for 5 minutes and then went home.

Arriving at the hotel in Malang is around 11:30am, packing up, lunch and then going straight to the airport to fly to Bali. That’s my Bromo combined itinerary, if your time is abundant, you can stay longer and go to a waterfall (don’t remember the name) on the way back, it would be nice.

Mount Bromo travel guide: Some notes before going to Mount Bromo

There are some notes for you to pay attention to when coming to Bromo

  • For those of you who plan to trek with 2 “legs”, pay attention to physical training.
  • And in common with all of you, be careful to dress warmly because don’t think that Indonesia near the equator, it is hot – Indonesia is quite cool and it is still cold in the morning when going up Mount Bromo. Mount Bromo is high, so the temperature is quite low, the average temperature in the morning is ~10 degrees Celsius.
  • The last time I went, the Bromo volcano started to be active again, because it gave off a huge amount of smoke and it was not safe to climb, so the closest visitors to Mount Bromo are 1km away.
  • But we were too lucky because the day I arrived was the first day the management assessed Bromo’s safety and began to allow again to climb Mount Bromo. Not only that, I went on the right day when the clouds covered the valley, it looked like a fairy scene.
  • The necessary items to hike the mountain are extremely important in the trip. The weather at the top of Bromo is quite cold, usually ranging from 11 to 14 degrees Celsius. So you need to prepare a full set of warm clothes, gloves, socks, etc. You can also bring a little more dry food, snacks… to recharge while going up the mountain. In addition, personal items such as medicine, toiletries, power banks, etc. are also necessary for the climbing trip.
  • If you’re planning on camping, finding for a tour with that experience or do it yourself. According to experience, you should still go through a travel agency to save money.
  • Do not destroy as well as detract from the beauty of the environment when making the journey.
  • Follow the regulations of Mount Bromo as well as the tour guide.
  • Accompanying many people will help you reduce fatigue as well as help each other in the journey.
  • Exercise physically and mentally before the trip to have the best health and spirit.
  • The departure time to reach Mount Bromo is the most important. You should choose the right time to be able to fully enjoy the scenery here.
  • The entrance ticket to Bromo volcano is 320,000 IDR for foreigners.

Conclusion, it was my 1.5 day Bromo volcano exploration itinerary and it was one of my most memorable trips in Indonesia.

Never had I ever thought I’d have the opportunity to see an active volcano , let alone hiking to the rim .

Mount Bromo (Gunung Bromo) is notably the most famous volcano in Indonesia due to the fact it is such an easy trip and the reward of witnessing the Bromo volcano is something that truly leaves you speechless.

What’s even more exciting is that this adventure in East Java is close to other travel activities like exploring waterfalls and temples so it makes for an absolutely once-in-a-lifetime trip !

7 Reasons you have to visit Mount Bromo Indonesia

Bucket List – I mean seriously , how many people can say they’ve visited an active volcano

The Views – Literally looking with your naked eyes into a volcano is something magical, but the views of the volcano complex is a photographer’s dream

Adventure – The entire experience of the Mount Bromo tour is absolutely incredible and so far removed from what most people visiting Indonesia just for Bali will ever experience

Effortless – Now when most people think of a volcano, you think you’d be hiking for days – that’s not the case here (this is the most rewarding walk I’ve ever experienced)

Value – Most people spend thousands for an expedition like this, visiting is so affordable that locals love this destination just as much as foreigners!

Location Friendly – The Mount Bromo location is by no means isolated or inaccessible for those flying in or taking the train!

Sleeping in Comfort – So you think you need to camp to see the sunrise?  Not a chance , there’s plenty Mount Bromo accommodation, close enough to sleep in a comfortable bed before your sunrise start!

Now if I haven’t convinced you to try Mount Bromo with the snippet above let me go into detail below (skip to what you need in the Table of Contents , Because I have to start with the best bits first and logistics later) :

Mount Bromo Sunrise

tour to bromo

I’m not a morning person . Well , sometimes I can be. I’d love to say I’m that chipper person who oozes sunshine when needing to wake up at 2:00 am for a 3:00 am starting, but I’m not.

This however is one of the few times I needed to be that ‘crack of dawn’ person.

Being ripped from your bed in the early hours is obviously not the way most people would epitomize their vacation, but for the chance to see the Mount Bromo sunrise you’ve got to bite the bullet .

East Java is the place for adventure RELATED READ: The Ultimate 1 Week East Java Itinerary

Our guide and driver, Eddy was waiting for us along with the throngs of other Jeeps at the entrance to Mount Bromo National Park. ‘Jeeps’ is in Italics because it’s actually 1980’s Toyota Land Cruisers.

tour to bromo

It’s 3:00 and time to leave, The lengthy queues of Jeeps contained the masses of fellow adventurers eagerly awaiting the start of their adventure to Mount Bromo with the first stop being Mount Penanjakan.

This is the place you NEED TO BE for the sunrise Bromo offers. Getting there is easy. The Jeep literally takes you from your hotel doorstep to the parking area for a quick trip up to the viewpoint.

This is the bonus for arranging your trip through a tour.

The trip was exciting , you’re driving on ‘ who knows what’ in complete darkness , in the back of this old Jeep that makes you truly feel you are truly at the start of an adventure.

With literally just the car lights ahead of you shining onto the next Jeep, you kind of have no idea where you are or where you’re going which just makes the anticipation grow that much more!

One thing you will realise is that wherever you’re going, there’s a lot of sand.

tour to bromo

Depending on how long the queue takes to get into the Bromo Tengger National Park will determine how early you are for sunrise. Our drive was pretty quick and we reached the parking lot for Mount Penanjakan earlier than expected.

So it’s cold . Like, this is not Indonesia cold . You know when you first land in Indonesia, the first thing that hits you smack in the face is humidity, well, here it’s not the case , at over 2000 metres (8000 ft) altitude, you best be wearing a jacket.

Needless to say, some warming up was in order and was easily arranged. In the parking area, there are plenty of little makeshift stalls and cafe-type structures selling coffee, teas, and warm snacks.

It seems we were going to a little area of Mount Penanjakan that was not as crowded as the other viewpoints.

The seclusion and secretiveness of stealthily creeping behind the cafes and makeshift paths towards the viewpoint was so exciting.

A short walk up and we were there in place to start watching the slivers of sun creep in.

As the clouds and became less visible and the light peeked through, I knew that this moment would be one I’d remember for the rest of my life.

What materialized from the clouds by the sun was at the time one of the most beautiful views I had ever seen.

Mt Bromo: Quiet, breathtaking, and yet so powerful. It’s a moving moment. You can really just sit for hours and stare. Which I did .

tour to bromo

The Mount Bromo images and photography from this viewpoint are honestly the most beautiful I’ve ever seen and can truly say this is one of the few destinations where what you see in the pictures is truly what you are getting with NO FILTERS NEEDED !

I’m not sure if you’ve realised yet, but I still haven’t mentioned the word ‘hike’. With all the pictures you’ve seen, there’s literally been no hiking! So what do people actually mean when they say ‘hike Mount Bromo’? That part comes next.

Reaching the Mount Bromo Crater Rim

This is where the words ‘hiking Mount Bromo’ are derived but as I’ll explain, there’s no hiking involved at all.

Once you’ve finished basking in the beauty of the Mt Bromo sunrise, the jeep will take you down Mount Penanjakan and across the sea of sand.

Bromo‘s crater rim climb involves taking the Jeep close enough to the base of Bromo which is actually what we passed in the early hours of darkness.

The Jeep will then drop you off at the parking area, and you’ll make your way on foot across the sea of sand. This is where you truly come to terms with the fact that this is a volcano.

tour to bromo

The sand is actually volcanic ash. And there is a ton of it. You definitely need to be wearing some sunglasses and a mask or buff over your mouth.

The walk isn’t very far, but there is the option to ride a horse to the stairs for a fee. I’m just mentioning this, It’s not something I’ve tried or have any insights into.

Now I mentioned the words stairs. Yes, there are stairs . There are stairs to reach the crater rim of Mt Bromo Indonesia! How crazy and effortlessly convenient is that?!?

Hiking Mount Bromo actually involves NO HIKING at all!

Yes, the stairs involve the effort of doing them, but you can easily take your time and do it at your own pace, and it’s really no more difficult than walking uphill.

tour to bromo

My mind was blown . I really thought that you would need some level of physical fitness to embark on this adventure of the summit of Mount Bromo volcano. The Mt Bromo hike is literally a walk and some stairs.

If you can do that in your day-to-day life, there literally is no further preparation needed to conquer this mountain.

Bromo Indonesia was easier than running 1 kilometre (less than a mile!).

The Bromo view even from the stairs is quite other-worldly . I’ve never been to another planet (as many of us haven’t) , but I imagine that this must be what the landscape must be like.

Mount Bromo crater was a quick walk up the stairs and there you have it. You are literally face-to-face with the crater of an active volcano.

tour to bromo

Another factor making this feat so incredible is that the entire crater rim is completely walkable (at your own safety) . There is a barrier between yourself and the crater as you reach the top of the stairs, but you can easily walk left or right for an unobstructed view.

You do need to be careful. It can be sandy and slippery so you do this at your own safety expense.

It is mesmerizing though. It’s not the lava and magma you see from an eruption, but the sulfur deposits and gases that actually create the billowing smoke that is characteristic of volcanoes.

tour to bromo

I couldn’t believe my eyes.

It was a moment I didn’t even know I needed to tick off my bucket list.

Now onto the nitty-gritty details. If you’re looking for how to plan this trip to Indonesia, below is a comprehensive guide on everything you need to know about visiting and planning a trip to Gunung Bromo Indonesia

Where is Mount Bromo

Simply put, It’s located in Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, East Java, Probolinggo near the small town of C emoro Lawang . Check it out on the map below

When to Visit Mount Bromo

The best time to visit Mount Bromo would be between April/May to October . Our visit was in the first week of June .

Indonesia only has two seasons (dry season and wet season) . The wet season starts in November and lasts till mid to end of April. I’d recommend trying to visit Gunung Bromo Indonesia just out of the rainy season in May or June.

How To Get to Mount Bromo

Mount Bromo is an easily accessible location and can be reached from a number of cities. The closest major cities to Mount Bromo are Malang and Surabaya. Surabaya is a bigger city hub therefore, most people fly to Surabaya and drive to Cemoro Lawang Bromo accommodation.

Bali to Bromo

OPTION 1: The fastest way is to book a flight from Bali (Ngurah Rai International Airport) to Surabaya Airport (Juanda International Airport) where you can be picked up by your tour company.

OPTION 2: The second option involves a couple of transfers . In Bali you will need to head to Gilimanuk Port , you then will depart Gilimanuk to East Java’s Ketapang Port . After arriving in Ketapang Port, head to the bus terminal to take a bus to Surabaya bus station, after arriving at Surabaya you can then be collected by your tour company to transfer to Cemoro Lawang.

TRAVELIST TIP: If you think flying is pricey here, you’re highly misinformed . In Indonesia, there are a number of low-cost carriers and domestic airlines so finding a deal that’s as cheap as taking the ferry, train or bus is pretty easy .

Yogyakarta to Bromo

OPTION 1: Take a train from Yogyakarta to Surabaya (approximately 4 hours). Get collected by your tour company and transferred to Cemoro Lawang Bromo accommodation.

OPTION 2: There is also the option to fly from Yogyakarta (Adisucipto International Airport) to Surabaya . Then be collected by your tour company from the airport.

Have more time to spend in Yogyakarta? Check out these Incredible UNESCO World Heritage sites Borobudur Temple and Prambanan Temple

Surabaya to Bromo

TRAVELIST TIP: The Surabaya Bromo tour option is a popular one because Surabaya is a more popular destination (and cheaper) to fly to from bigger cities like Jakarta, Bali, or Yogyakarta.

OPTION 1: (Public Transport) In Surabaya you will be able to use public transportation like the bus to get to Probolinggo , another ‘main’ city close to Mount Bromo. The bus will then stop in Probolinggo where you will then need to get into a smaller green mini-bus to get to Cemoro Lawang . There is also the option to take a train from Surabaya Station to Probolinggo Station and then do the minibus transfer to Cemoro Lawang .

OPTION 2: Get your tour company to collect you from the train station/ airpo rt and head to Cemoro Lawang for your accommodation.

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE: We did this trip as part of a combined tour that included Mount Bromo , Ijen Crater , and Tumpak Sewu Waterfalls . I strongly suggest a combined tour and making the most of your time in East Java and these spots are seriously not to be missed! >> BOOK IT HERE

Malang to Bromo

OPTION 1: (Public Transport) Head to the Malang Bus station and take a bus to Probolinggo , From there take the small minibus van to Cemoro Lawang

OPTION 2: Stay in Malang, use a tour company that leaves from Malang to Mount Bromo .

Mount Bromo Tours

When visiting Indonesia, Mount Bromo is basically a necessity to visit regardless of whether you’re just looking for a Boho Bali trip. Bromo is actually so well situated that it makes for a great destination to combine with other stops in East Java .

One of the most popular tours is the Mount Bromo Ijen Crater Tour , 3 days across Java including a stop at an amazing waterfall.

Whether you choose to tour Bromo only , an Ijen Bromo tour , or even a Mount Bromo Tumpak Sewu waterfall tour – You will not be disappointed!

Mount Bromo Tour Package Prices

Prices will vary depending on whether you visit Mount Bromo only or do a tour combined with other destinations like the Mount Bromo-Ijen tour.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Be sure to check your inclusions and exclusions in tour packages prior to booking . Things like entrance tickets, jeep rental, driver, guides, etc. may seem mandatory, but if something is not stipulated – ASK!!!

A typical private 3 day 2-night Surabaya Mount Bromo tour can start from IDR 3. 8 to 4 million and upwards per person.

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE: Our Mt Bromo tour price was 3 days and 2 nights and included Mount Bromo, Tumpak Sewu Waterfall, and Ijen Crater, 2 nights accommodation, drivers, guide, and all entrance fees were included. The only exclusions were lunch and dinner. We paid 4 million IDR per person. This is an EXTREMELY GOOD Mt Bromo tour package for a PRIVATE TOUR from Surabaya.

tour to bromo

If you don’t go for the tour package option, here’s an idea of the Mount Bromo tour price for the individual fees:

Mount Bromo Entrance Fees

Mount Bromo Entrance Fees: TOURIST – IDR 220 000 (weekdays) IDR 320 000 (weekends and peak season) , LOCAL – IDR 29.5000 (weekdays) IDR 34.000 (weekends)

Mount Bromo Jeep Fees

Jeep Rental Fees: These fees are determined by whether you just visit the Mount Penanjakan Viewpoint (short tour) or visit the Mount Penanjakan viewpoint and go to the crater Rim (long tour)

Short Tour Jeep Price: low season- IDR 500 000; high season- IDR 650 000

Long Tour Jeep Price: low season- IDR 700 000; high season- IDR 850 000

These fees are In addition to the entrance fees, but a Jeep can take 4 people so you could also find others to share with and split the costs.

PERSONAL OPINION: There have been many articles stating how you should never take the first price provided and that locals are out to cheat foreigners and overcharge or even scam you. The tours that I have recommended above are reviewed and operated by reputable companies using local guides and drivers. I STRONGLY RECOMMEND USING A TOUR COMPANY   for the reasons that the jobs are given to locals and this is their source of income and you are also contributing to the growing economy of this third world country.

I also believe that the people reporting being scammed and overcharged are not using reputable and reviewed guides and agents. Most local guides, companies, and drivers are charging the figures listed above .

If you are getting a deal vastly different from what’s listed above, then perhaps it’s shady and you should look elsewhere. Things that are too good to be true, usually aren’t!

What to Wear to Mount Bromo

As mentioned above the weather in Cemoro Lawang is cold!

Like European winter cold!

It’s not very common to wear long pants and jackets in such a tropical country but at these altitudes, you’ll need to cover up . I suggest dressing in layers as you’ll probably want to peel some off after you’ve summited the Mount Bromo crater .

PACK THESE ITEMS

Warm Jacket – something not too heavy (Down jackets are great and easy to fold up and pop back into your backpack)

A Vest or Thin Activewear Top – to wear under your thin top (You might be questioning whether you need 3 layers – typically get hot and 3 layers were just enough for sunrise)

Long Thin Top – to wear under your jacket to shield you from the chill after the jacket becomes too much

Beanie – My ears were freezing, it’s recommended!

Gloves – my fingertips were going numb, you need these.

Buff/ Bandanna or Mask – to cover your mouth whilst driving in the jeep across the sea of sand and for the walk to the crater rim.

Sunglasses – to shield your eyes from the ash and dust when walking across the sea of sand (and generally just from the sun)

Sports Sneakers or Shoes with a bit of Grip – closed shoes are recommended for the walk through the sand as well as for ankle support in the soft sand (hiking boots are not essential)

Light Day Bag or Backpack – for your camera gear, water and to put your layers in after you’ve taken them off

Typical Mount Bromo Sunrise Hike Itinerary

One of the things I absolutely love about this adventure destination is that this incredible experience can be accomplished literally in one morning. Your Bromo mountain tour starts at 3:00 am and completes at 10:30 am.

This is a typical Mount Bromo itinerary for sunrise:

  • An early morning start of 3 am is required for the Mount Bromo Sunrise Hike tour.
  • The jeep will then take you to Mount Penanjakan (a 30 to 40-minute drive depending on how busy it is that day).
  • It will park just before Mount Penanjakan, where you will walk for about 10-15 minutes to the top of Mount Penanjakan for the King Kong Hill Viewpoint. The time for sunrise will usually be about 5:30 am. Indulge in something warm to drink and snack on from the vendors
  • From the top of Mount Penanjakan, you will see a panoramic birds-eye sunrise view of the gigantic Tengger Caldera, Mount Bromo, Mount Semeru, and other lesser but equally impressive volcanic cones.
  • After sunrise, you will board the jeep again, where you will be driven down (approximately a 20-minute ride) to the bed of the caldera via the plains through the Seas of Sand.
  • The jeep will stop at a car park just beside The Poten – a Tenggerese Hindu temple.
  • Then walk across the seas of sand (volcanic ash)
  • Next is the Mount Bromo steps: a concrete flight of (approximately 240) steps will lead you from the base of Mount Bromo to its crater rim, where you can peer down into its crater.
  • After taking in the scenery, you will head back to board the Jeep
  • The jeep will take you back to your accommodation where you can warm up/cool down with a shower, have some breakfast and check out of your accommodation around 10:30 am or 11:00 am

One cannot speak of Bromo without highlighting the awe-inspiring sunrise from Mount Penanjakan. Positioned strategically, this vantage point offers a panoramic view of the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. As dawn breaks, the sky transforms into a canvas of warm colors, illuminating the iconic silhouettes of Mount Bromo, Mount Batok, and Mount Semeru. The scene is nothing short of magical, drawing crowds from around the world to witness this natural masterpiece.

Bromo Crater Hike

For the intrepid souls seeking a closer encounter with Bromo’s volcanic magnificence, a hike to the Bromo Crater is a must. Begin the journey from the foothills, traversing the Sea of Sand, a vast expanse of volcanic ash. As you ascend, the distinct sulfuric aroma fills the air, signaling your proximity to the crater. Standing at the rim, peer into the heart of Bromo as wisps of smoke rise from its depths. The view is both humbling and surreal, offering a tangible connection to the Earth’s elemental forces.

Whispering Sands Adventure

The Sea of Sand isn’t merely a passageway to the crater; it’s an adventure waiting to unfold. Locally known as Pasir Berbisik, or Whispering Sands, this unique terrain is a vast stretch of volcanic ash with a fascinating acoustic phenomenon. As you stroll across the sands, you’ll notice a soft, whispering sound beneath your footsteps. It’s a natural symphony, created by the fine particles of volcanic ash rubbing against each other. Take a moment to let this auditory marvel sink in, adding an extra layer of wonder to your Bromo experience.

Savvy Exploration at the Teletubbies Hill

Nestled amidst the undulating landscapes of Bromo lies the Teletubbies Hill, named after its striking resemblance to the fictional landscape from the popular children’s show. The rolling hills, covered in vibrant greenery, create a picturesque setting that feels almost surreal. It’s an ideal spot for those seeking a more serene encounter with Bromo’s beauty, away from the bustling crowds.

Tumpak Sewu: Curtain of a Thousand Waters

Tumpak Sewu emerges as a hidden gem, a breathtaking cascade near the iconic Bromo. Known as the “Thousand Waterfalls,” it descends dramatically from lush cliffs, forming a mesmerizing curtain of mist. The journey to Tumpak Sewu is an adventure through dense jungles and precarious trails, unveiling the raw beauty of nature. As the falls plummet into a turquoise pool below, the sheer force creates a symphony of sound. This spectacle, surrounded by tropical foliage, evokes awe and wonder, offering a serene respite amid the rugged landscapes that define this enchanting region.

Unraveling the Mysteries of Blue Flames

As the night falls over Ijen, a mysterious phenomenon begins to unfold. Deep within the crater, fumaroles emit electric blue flames, creating an ethereal spectacle that is both surreal and captivating. The journey to witness these blue flames involves a night hike, guided by experienced locals who navigate the challenging terrain with ease. As you approach the heart of the crater, the intensity of the blue flames becomes more pronounced, casting an otherworldly glow on the rocky landscape. This rare display of nature’s power is a testament to the high sulfur content within the crater, and it stands as one of the primary attractions for those seeking an unforgettable nocturnal experience.

Sunrise Over Kawah Ijen

As the night gives way to dawn, the landscape transforms into a canvas painted with hues of pink, orange, and gold. The sunrise over Kawah Ijen is a spectacle that rivals the famous sunrises around the world. Positioned at the rim of the crater, spectators are treated to a breathtaking panorama as the first light of day bathes the turquoise lake below in a warm, golden glow. The juxtaposition of the serene lake against the rugged volcanic terrain creates a visual feast that lingers in the memory long after the sun has fully risen.

Hiking the Trail of Sulfur Miners

The iconic image of sulfur miners trekking up and down the steep slopes of Ijen is a poignant reminder of the human endeavor in the face of formidable natural forces. Joining a sulfur miner’s trail is an immersive experience that takes you into the heart of their challenging daily routine. Witness the strength and resilience of these miners as they carry baskets laden with bright yellow sulfur chunks, extracted from the fumaroles within the crater. Engage with them, hear their stories, and gain a deeper appreciation for the sacrifices made in the pursuit of this elemental resource.

Observing the Acid Lake and Volcanic Geology

The turquoise lake within Ijen Crater is not just a picturesque backdrop; it is a testament to the geological forces at play. The lake’s stunning color is a result of the high acidity and the presence of various minerals in the water. Geology enthusiasts will find Ijen to be a fascinating case study, with its acidic lake and the intricate network of fumaroles. Guided tours provide insights into the volcanic processes that have shaped this landscape over millennia, offering a holistic understanding of Ijen’s geological significance.

Yes. You can request for the optional Milky Way tour which starts around midnight from your lodge at Cemoro Lawang. You will head to a nearby peak such as Mount Pananjakan, Mentigen Hill, Kingkong Hill or Seruni Point where you can view the Milky Way. Avid photographers should bring suitable camera equipment such as tripod for Milky Way Photography. You would then continue with the standard itinerary for sunrise views over Mt Bromo. The extra cost is 200K IDR for each jeep (4 customers to a jeep).

It cost around 75K IDR for one way trip to cross the sand sea on a horse. For a return trip, it will cost around 150K IDR. Note that the horse ride ends close to the start of the stairs to Mt Bromo crater. You will still have to climb the flight of steps up to the crater. Horse ride is entirely optional and you can also walk across the sand sea which most visitors do. Do negotiate with the horsemen to try to get a better deal.

No. Mount Bromo area is very dark and cold in the night. For the safety concern, we don’t allow the customers to hike solely on foot rather than taking the Jeep.

Sunglasses and sunblock lotion are highly recommended – the sun rays can be harsh and at high altitude, it is easy to get sunburnt even though the surrounding temperature is cold. The terrain is very sandy– wearing a face mask is also recommended for protection. (Akin to walking in a desert). If you are visiting the waterfalls, please bring along wet gears (swim suits with t-shirt and shorts, booties/sandals, spectacle hooks, waterproof cover for camera which can be secured to your body, change of clothes, towel).

Our vehicle will drop you at the parking lot of Madakaripura Waterfalls where you will hop to a motorbike (Ojek) for a short 5 minutes ride to the entrance. Then you need to do a short trek of around 15 minutes (1km) to reach the waterfalls.

Swimming is no longer allowed at the waterfalls since 2018. But you will still get wet from the water. For footwear, we recommend covered rubber shoes like Crocs. Sandals/slippers with good grips are also fine but please be careful not to hit any rocks.
