Local exponents impressed in international BJJ meet

Brunei Darussalam combat sport exponents did the nation proud after winning medals in the Abu Dhabi Jiu-jitsu Pro (AJP) Tour Johor Bahru International Jiu-jitsu Championship 2023 at the Educity Sports Complex in Johor Bahru, Malaysia recently.

The country’s leading martial artists achieved success in the GI and no-GI events in the highly-prestigious meet.

Brunei exponent Nazif Shamhary struck two gold medals in the under-56 kilogramme category in both the GI and no-GI events.

Nazif defeated Vietnam’s Duc Ho in the respective GI and no-GI finals respectively.

Brunei also made a one-two podium finish in the under-62 kilogramme category in the no-GI event with Faris Shamhary winning the gold medal and Roshan taking silver.

Roshan also claimed silver in the GI event while Faris claimed bronze in the same event. In the GI event, Roshan sealed a 9-6 win over Singapore’s Arthur Goh in the quarter-finals before closing out a 2-0 win over Indonesia’s Muhammad Raihan in the last-four to cement a place in the final.

Faris started off his GI campaign with a 7-1 win before being denied an all-Brunei final following a loss to Indonesia’s Khalid Hamzah in the last four.

The Bruneian bounced back with a 4-0 win over Muhammad Raihan in the bronze medal match.

Currently, Nazif holds the top spot in Brunei in both the Men’s Amateur GI and no-GI White Belt Rankings for the AJP Tour 2022-2023.

He also placed 133rd in Asia in the GI event and 69th in the no-GI event.

Meanwhile, Faris is currently ranked first in Brunei and 69th in the No GI event.

He is also ranked third in Brunei and 340th in Asia in the GI event.

Roshan is ranked second in the GI event in Brunei and 248th in Asia, as well as being ranked third in Brunei and 126th in Asia in the no-GI event.

The trio of white belt holders – who are all brothers – are seasoned competitors and train under the banner of Khalifa Mixed Martial Arts. – Fadhil Yunus

Weekend Recap: AJP Has A Busy Saturday With Four Tournaments Around The World

Increasing Jiu-Jitsu’s reach with each passing weekend, the AJP has once again promoted a batch of stellar tournaments in different areas of the planet, giving athletes a chance to not only compete but to also choose which place they would visit.

This time around, Ukraine, the Czech Republic, Portugal, and Moldova all held their tournaments on Saturday, March 16th, setting up the organization’s mats and welcoming aspiring champions into their arenas.

Without further ado, let’s check out the highlights from each championship!

AJP Tour Kyiv International Jiu-Jitsu Championship 2024: Leonid Chelakhov and Togrul Ibragimli submit and keep the gold in Ukraine

Taking place at the National University of Physical Education and Sports of Ukraine, the Kyiv International was the hub for colored belts aiming to prove themselves and take another step in their journey through Jiu-Jitsu. It was in this proving ground that two local Professional purple belts managed to stand out from their peers, giving their all and submitting their opponents to become champions.

Fighting in the gi at the 120kg division, Leonid Chelakhov (ZR Team Association) left little room for doubt when it comes to his skills. Entering the bracket to face Eugene Bolotnov (Atos) in the final, Leonid went all in from the get-go, overwhelming his opponent and landing his winning submission in the very first minute of the bout to take the gold.

Later on, at the No-Gi 77kg division, Togrul Ibragimli (Karabakh BJJ Academy) showed his prowess while fighting for the title. Facing his countryman Fahan Hiulaliiev (ZR team Association) in the final, Togrul also did not waste much time in putting his game into motion, scoring a 3-0 before locking a submission to climb the podium.

AJP Tour Prague International Jiu-Jitsu Championship 2024: Eldar Rafigaev dominates his opponents to take the double gold in the Czech Republic

Welcoming athletes from all over the world, the Sportovní Hala TJ Spoje Praha set up the AJP mats in its halls and the Prague International started putting each and every one of the competitors to the test in their respective divisions. Among the many warriors who rose to the challenge, the Moldovan black belt Eldar Rafigaev (Jungle BJJ) became a highlight by using his Jiu-Jitsu to completely dominate his opponents and conquer the coveted double gold.

His journey began at the 120kg division, with a three-man bracket standing as a hurdle between Eldar and the title. In his first match, the Moldovan athlete faced Brazil’s Amilcar Santos (GFTeam) and needed just a little over a minute to lock a submission and advance to the final, where he would face his teammate Pavel Srnensky. Despite being from the same gym, Pavel was unable to keep up with Eldar throughout the five minutes of the gold round and found himself on the receiving end of Eldar’s arsenal. When the clock ran out, an astounding 28-1 score landed Eldar his first gold.

He returned to the battlefield a little later, this time ready to tackle the No-Gi 120kg division. His opponent this time around was the Israeli Roni Gilgor (Soul Fighter Israel) and both competitors went all out to secure the title, but Eldar was once again on a roll and locked the submission to take the win and his second gold medal.

AJP Tour South Portugal Regional Jiu-Jitsu Championship 2024: Matheus Vetoraci and Neocicero Barbosa take the double gold in Pinhal Novo

Another competition that took place on Saturday was the South Portugal Regional, landing at the Pavilhão Desportivo Mun. do Pinhal Novo for an entire afternoon of Jiu-Jitsu. Colored and black belts from all over the world were welcomed in the fight areas to fight for glory and ranking points, but two Brazilian black belts from the Professional category stole the show by conquering not one but two gold medals on the same day.

Representing Blvckout Grappling, Matheus Vetoraci fought with and without the gi to completely conquer the 85kg division. Starting with the cloth, he found himself facing the local Edcarlos Oliveira (ZR Team Association) in his first final, but the duel was short-lived as Matheus unleashed his game and locked the winning submission with less than a minute on the clock. Later on, now fighting without the gi, Matheus faced his countryman Samuel Cassimiro (G13BJJ), and this time the fight lasted the entirety of the regulated time, with Matheus scoring multiple times while giving his opponent no chance to fight back. At the end of it all, a 13-0 score landed Matheus atop the podium for the second time.

Meanwhile, the 94kg division belonged to Vision BJJ’s representative Neocicero Barbosa. Fighting only Brazilian opponents in the tournament, Neocicero started in the gi, defeating Mikael Rhaillander (Apex Jiu-Jitsu HQ) by 7-1 in the semis and then beating Lucas Azevedo (ZR Team Association) in the final with a 2-0 score. With one gold medal hanging from his shoulders, Neocicero returned to once again conquer the 94kg division, this time without the gi, and found himself once again facing Lucas Azevedo. The rematch was trickier than the first match as Lucas not only held on better but also managed to score. When the clock ran out, a narrow 3-2 score gave Neocicero his second gold medal.

AJP Tour Bessarabia Regional Jiu-Jitsu Championship 2024: Ceban Dumitru seizes the double gold in Moldova

Last but not least, the Bessarabia Regional landed at the State University of Physical Education and Sport, attracting athletes of all ages and graduations to step up to its battlefield and show they have what it takes to become an AJP champion. Many competitors managed to prove themselves worthy, but perhaps none more than the local brown belt Ceban Dumitru (On-Top Moldova), who fought tooth and nail to conquer the coveted double gold.

His journey began at the 94kg division, where he had to fight twice against the Polish Cezary Bielak (Rio Grappling Club Poland) to take the title. The first fight was a tricky one, with both sides attacking and defending well, which resulted in a 0-0 score that lasted five minutes of regulated time and another minute of overtime, with Ceban taking the win via decision. The final round saw a more comfortable Ceban take the stage, unleashing his game throughout the match and beating his opponent with a 5-0 score.

Ceban found himself on the mats again a little later, this time taking part in the brown/black Open Heavyweight division. This time around, he would have to overcome the Moldovan black belt Gheorghe Ciobanu (FN Fight.Co World) to taste victory, but he kept his cool and found his opportunity. On the latter end of the duel, Gheorghe was ahead on the scoreboard by 1-0, but Ceban found a gap in his opponent’s defense and capitalized with a well-placed submission to climb the podium yet again.

WEEKEND RECAP: AJP OPENS THE LATTER HALF OF 2023 WITH FIVE INTERNATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

June 26, 2023

Capping off the month of June, there were no dull moments last weekend. With five countries hosting their own International tournaments, AJP made sure to keep its foot on the gas as we get ready to transition to the latter half of 2023. Check out below the highlights of each championship!

Ibrahim and Naser take the spotlight in Dubai

Opening the weekend, the AJP No-Gi Dubai International Jiu-Jitsu Championship 2023 brought the federation’s signature action closer to its roots. With four fight areas and athletes from all backgrounds hungry for glory, the tournament kicked off its two-day campaign on Saturday, June 24th, giving the crowds at the Al Nasr Club and the fans watching at AJPTour.tv a chance to witness some first-class grappling.

Two Middle Eastern athletes managed to rise through the ranks and steal the spotlight. First, in the 62kg division, the Emirati Ibrahim Almaazmi (A.F.N.T) fought a hard battle against fellow countrymen and teammate Saeed Almesmari. The duel ended with Ibrahim landing the submission and taking the title.

Then, in the 69kg bracket, Kuwait’s Naser Abdulkareem (Gracie Barra Al-Ahmadi) saw himself in the middle of a round-robin with two Brazilians. After submitting Raphael Veiga (Al Ain Jiu-Jitsu), Naser went through a tough match against Guthiery Melo (A.F.N.T), taking the win and the gold with a 4-3 score.

Brazilian athletes win double gold at the Jacksonville International

Closing our Saturday analysis, the AJP Tour Jacksonville International Jiu-Jitsu Championship 2023 reached the Floridian shores, inviting competitors from all corners of the planet to try their luck in the USA. With the action tightly packed into three fight areas, colored and black belts brought their A-game to the tournament, gunning for the gold and the top of the federation’s ranking.

While the tournament happened in North America, two South American athletes stole the show by taking the coveted double gold. João Costa (GFTeam) joined the competition in the 69kg bracket, where he beat fellow countrymen Marcus Vinicius de Oliveira (Future School of Jiu Jitsu USA) by 9-6 to reach the finals and defeat the local Sebastian Serpa (Outer Heaven), with a 4-3 score. He then returned to compete for the no-gi title, putting the scoreboard at 6-4 to overcome the Brazilian Giovanni Carvalho (American Top Team) to take his second gold.

The second highlight was Lucas Lima de Brito (Gracie Barra BH), who started his campaign at the 77kg division, outscoring Igor Feliz (Future School of Jiu Jitsu USA) by 6-3 to take the first title. Later, Lucas took off his gi and went all out against the American Colin Taylor (Luiz Palhares Jiu Jitsu), putting the scoreboard at 8-0, before ultimately landing a submission to climb the podium once again.

With five fight areas spread across the Lenzburg Centrum, warriors of all ages and graduations took to the mats, facing each other tirelessly as they aimed for the top spot on their respective podiums.

The Master category was the standout in Lenzburg. Then, the Master 1 Swiss athlete Benjamin Brander (Mill Hill BJJ) showcased his no-gi skills as he outscored Brazilian Everton Borges (Frota Academy) by 7-1 to reach the finals, where he landed a 6-1 to take the 77kg gold from UK’s Gareth Redman (Para Bellum Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy).

Finally, in the Master 2 77kg bracket, Kevin Batruel (Carlson Gracie Team Ari Galo) put on his gi and submitted the returning Everton Borges to become the division champion.

Anderson Duarte and Marcus Ruiz take the double gold in Goiânia

On Sunday, June 25th, it was Brazil’s turn to bring the heat to its winter-laden territories. The AJP Tour Goiânia International Jiu-Jitsu Championship 2023 took over the SESI Canaã with its five fight areas, daring athletes from all levels to rise to its mats and put their training to the test in the South American country.

Among the many intrepid warriors and memorable duels that permeated the tournament, Anderson Duarte and Marcus Ruiz, both representing Atrium BJJ, managed to stand out by snagging the titles on both the weight and absolute. First, Anderson conquered the 69kg division by scoring 11-6 against teammate Adolfo Neto. Later, in the Open Lightweight, Anderson submitted Marco Aurélio (Saikoo) in the semifinal and then landed another submission against Lucas Silva (PSLPB Cícero Costha) in the last round to take his second gold.

Meanwhile, Marcus Ruiz debuted his campaign in the 94kg division, where he outscored Uriel Ramos (GFTeam) by 7-1 before hitting the finals, where a 2-0 score put him ahead of Hiago Lima (GFTeam).
