For King and Country (formed in 2007) is a Christian alternative rock/pop duo comprised of Australian/American brotherw Joel and Luke Smallbone, hailing from Nashville, Tennessee, U.S.

Born in Sydney, Australia, but raised in Nashville, Tennessee, Joel and Luke’s father was a music promoter and strongly influenced the brothers’ musical participation. During high school the pair would contribute backing vocals to recordings of their sister Rebecca St. James, however by 2007 began performing on their own. Originally playing under the moniker Joel & Luke, this changed in 2008 with the release of their debut EP “A Tale of Two Towns”. Featuring many songs which would feature on later albums, the success of the EP led the band to sign with Warner Music Group. Whilst working with producer Ben Glover in the studio, he suggested the moniker For King and Country, which the brothers were taken by and decided to adopt.

Following a few years of honing their skills, For King and Country released the EP “For King & Country: The EP” in 2011. The record was led by the single “Busted Heart (Hold On To Me)” which charted at No. 3 on the Billboard’s Christian Songs Chart. The EP grew the anticipation for their feature full-length, which later arrived in February 2012. Entitled “Crave”, For King and Country’s debut full-length was extolled by music critics and peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Christian Albums Chart. In support of the release the band toured on the 2012 Winter Jam Tour Spectacular, performed on the Mike Huckabee show on Fox News, and toured alongside Jason Castro and Dara Maclean.

Towards the tail-end of 2012 For King and Country released the Christmas song “Baby Boy”, which charted at No. 20 on the Billboard Top 100. The live album “Hope Is What We Crave: Live” followed in August 2013, led by the single of the same name. Following the release of the EP “Into the Silent Night: The EP” the band were awarded the GMA Dove Award for New Artist of the Year in 2013. In 2014 For King and Country issued their sophomore album “Run Wild. Live Free. Love Strong”. Like its predecessor the record earned a host of rave reviews, however far outperformed the band’s debut in the charts. Peaking at No. 13 on the Billboard 200 and No. 2 on the Billboard Christian Albums Chart, the record's success was aided by returning producer Ben Glover. The album spawned the singles “Fix My Eyes” and “Shoulders” and later won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album. The band also won the Grammy for Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song for their contribution to the Lacrae track “Messengers” taken from his album “Anomaly”.

Live reviews

There’s something so unique about seeing For King & Country perform live. Whether it’s the ease between brothers Joel and Luke, or the pairs’ perfectly entwined lyrics and melodies which dance double-helix-like, seeing For King & Country live on stage is like coming home after a long and tiring day. The vibe at their concerts is energising yet soothing, fresh yet familiar. As soon as the duo start to perform you know that you’re not meant to be anywhere else. Brothers to Christian music singer Rebecca St. James and sons to a music-promoting father, Joel and Luke were destined to find themselves in the thick of the music industry at some point. Just as their chosen name is reflective of their belief in something wider than themselves, their alt-rock music reflects an interest in something wider than traditional Christian pop music. Their lyrics are upbeat and fresh, yet emotionally deep. The boy’s Australian-American upbringing is perfectly reflected in their trans-Pacific sound. Seeing the brothers perform hits such as ‘Busted Heart (Hold On To Me)’ and ‘The Proof of Your Love’ is just amazing. Being a part of the crowd singing along in unison to ‘Middle of Your Heart’ when the boys performed in Nashville is something I will never ever forget. The energy they give off is insane. Seeing them live is a must, trust me!

Australian-American brother duo Joel David Smallbone and Luke James Smallbone better known onstage as For King and Country have achieved a large amount in their short career. Merging the genres of worship, pop and rock in a truly anthemic manner, their music can be universally enjoyed whether you follow christianity or not and the charismatic brothers ensure the audience know this throughout the performance.

The likes of Billboard have praised them as America's answer to Coldplay and as you watch the two musicians moving around the stage in an upbeat manner to their pop/rock sounds it seems to be a fair comparison. They may not have the back catalogue but they are well on the way with two hit albums so far and a handful of singles. They also have a following that has proven to be devoted and dedicated who come out to see the pair perform again and again. They seem to be having a fantastic time on the road and never tire of energy as they sing out the final choruses to 'Proof Of Love' whilst the crowds cheer on ecstatically below the stage whilst the two musicians make sure their enthusiasm is very much appreciated by all the performers onstage.

It was a great evening! Thank you very much! Thank you for bringing us closer to God's heart with your music! Thanks also for your personal testimonies and what you experience with God! I have a few difficult years behind me. And your music has helped me to go through this time! I nearly lost my child through illness, two dear people died from a traffic accident and my marriage is almost broken. But God has carried me through and your songs have often given me new courage and hope. God bless you and your service! there is still much to say about what God has done in my life. I just wanted to thank you from the heart that you are a blessing for so many people with your songs and your life with God and you are a great role model for many people! I'm glad if I have the chance to visit your concerts again!

Many greetings from Germany!

I had seat 106 J 1,2,3,4...side view close to stage. I enjoyed show..my only complaint s are...the performers didn't turn toward the side audience enough. They played forward 90 percent of the time, even when walking around. The acoustics got off for the last 3 to 4 songs of the show too.while I admire the compassion international, their name is for king and country and a lot of American children are living in poverty too. Overall they are professional performers who put on a decent show..but if they are going to start a 1/2 late at least tell the audience why and when sharing the story about courtney... maybe say why she was taking the pills and the name of the medicine. ... I enjoy the sound of the band and will see them at unity in 2020..God Bless.

For Kind and Country was excellent Nov 7th in Madison!!! The music, the lights, the new look of a ship...them coming down on the sails from way up high in the sky singing Amen was a stunner! Cannot tell you how much I anticipated them coming to Madison and was excited beyond excited to see them and hear them. I enjoyed that each band member came to the point of the stage bringing their instruments and being introduced & playing songs, that was unexpected and I appreciated that so much. I was six chairs away from that point of the front of the ship and saw everyone & thing up close... a highlight of my life to be there that night!!! What a special group of people, and their music is great! God has blessed us all so much!!!

From start to finish, this show was amazing. This is the fourth time we have seen For King and Country in concert and this, by far, was the best. First, we did not have to travel to Florida; Next, parking was easy; And, the stage was perfect for the venue at the Savannah Civic Center. I think if the stage would have permitted, they would have been better suited in the Johnny Mercer Theatre as opposed to the Martin Luther King Jr Arena.

The lights and video screens helped enhance the show and having the guys come into the audience is always fun. Love their Stage B performance too.

Over all, an amazing show, best we have seen from them yet. Hope to see them again soon. Thanks Mates!

Chicago concert : they are theatrical performers— very high energy and lots of fog and lights! They may have sung all the songs from Burn The Ships album but didnt sing “O God Forgive Us” & a couple others I loved of theirs but didn't hear. Concert built in anticipation as the doors opened around 715 (15 min late) before we could walk into the building, but concert also was close to 40 min late in starting. No prayers during concert either which I am used to having. This stage was well used as they were running back and forth and even came up thru the crowd... they must be so tired after their performances! Enjoyed the show!

My daughter and I attended the For King and Country last evening at the Santander Arena in Reading, PA. It was a fantastic, wonderfully performed concert we have ever attended! Joel and Luke's interaction and conversing with the audience, along with their beautiful music touched the hearts of all of us in attendance.

If you didn't have the opportunity to attend one of their concerts, please make it a point to do so! You will not be disappointed!

God bless For King and Country and all of their families.

While the music was great, not nearly enough. Only 4 dynamite songs from Zach Williams. Of the 3 hours spent at the show, less than 90 minutes of music between Zach and Fir King and Country. Both were fantastic. But spending 30-40 minutes for a break to go shop in the middle of the performance was a real buzz kill. So bad my guest left. I realize this is a common format for Christian concerts, but it takes away from a great event. Did not feel I got my money’s worth. Just sat around a lot waiting for some music.

A delightful experience and one I will not soon forget! I have seen YouTube videos of "For King and Country" and was captivated then, being there live was an amazing experience indeed! I listen on Pandora daily, so I knew all of the songs except the preview of the new song coming out in the next album. I can't wait for my copy to arrive! I loved the entire production but especially the opening with the sheet and silhouette, it was a nice touch to the already phenomenal artistry of this band!

For King + Country Talk ‘Checking In’ to Country With an Assist From Lee Brice

"Checking In," written by Michael Farren, Garrett Jacobs and Ken Hart, is featured on the soundtrack to For King + Country's movie Unsung Hero .

For King & Country

Trending on billboard, beyoncé's 'ameriican requiem' slams haters who say she's not 'country enough'.

“Every single time I listen to it, I call my mom and daddy,” Brice says.

It’s a good sign that “Checking In” is working.

Things weren’t working all that well when Michael Farren, Garrett Jacobs and Ken Hart wrote it on Oct. 15, 2022, at Farren’s Curb | Word office in Nashville. Farren was feeling under the weather — so much so that he almost canceled the appointment. The three writers spent two hours kicking around ideas but came up empty. Finally, Garrett proffered “Checking In,” a title inspired by his own father.

“Anytime my dad calls me, he always ends the call with, ‘Just checking in to see how you were doing,’ ” Garrett recalls, “so I wrote that down in my notes.”

When he brought up the title, Farren related well to the scenario. His father often leaves messages with the same “just checking in” verbiage, and he started reciting one of them with a melody attached to it.

But it wasn’t an exact replication. The story flipped at the chorus as the stanza’s opening line, “I don’t know many times I’ve let that message play,” is the first time the listener realizes the opening verse isn’t a current conversation, but a recording. And as the chorus ends, it’s clear that the singer is playing it because it’s the only way he has left to check in with his dad.

The father/son emotions in that topic were strong, but they were particularly hard for Hart, whose relationship with his dad is decidedly strained. He felt like bolting.

“I was kind of not wanting to participate because of the subject matter,” Hart says, “but Michael knows me well enough. And he’s one of the few people that has permission to call me out when I need to be called out. He’s got this look that he gives me that says, ‘OK, dude. Get your head out of your butt. It’s time to participate.’”

Hart did stick around, and they were able to process the song — and its difficult emotions — in short order. “It probably took less than 45 minutes to get it done,” he remembers.

They finished the chorus with the protagonist noting that he even calls his dad back sometimes when he listens to the message. From there, verse two pretty much dictated itself. “The obvious next step,” Farren notes, “was ‘What would I say [to] that voicemail that he’s never going to hear?’ ‘I’m doing all right, work’s been a little hard, but you know, the kids are good. You’d be proud.’ It was just that conversational.”

Farren played it publicly for the first time that night at The Listening Room in Nashville. After the show, his wife confirmed what he had felt from the stage: “There were a lot of grown-up men crying.”

The next morning, Farren performed “Checking In” with acoustic guitar on a TikTok, and by the next morning, he had gotten over 300,000 views. (To date, the video has amassed more than 452,000). “That kind of got people’s attention a little bit, to be like, ‘The song might be special,’” Garrett suggests.

Farren had Curb vp of country and creative Colt Murski send the link to Brice; in less than 10 minutes, Brice put it on hold. Months later, Luke Smallbone saw the same TikTok. While for King + Country isn’t a country act, “Checking In” moved him, and with the Unsung Hero movie in production, he thought the act could pull it off for the Inspired By Soundtrack . He mentioned it to the duo’s producer, Ben Glover (Chris Tomlin, Anne Wilson), who also produces Brice. The artists decided to collaborate, a development Glover had not expected from the Smallbone brothers.

“The one thing that I never would have thought was that they would do anything country because that’s just not their wheelhouse,” Glover explains. “They’re not trying to turn country — that’s not their thing at all. I think it was more like, ‘We want to do it because we really like the song.’ ”

The brothers let Glover produce it without their input. “I had called Glover and kind of given him my vision for the song, but it still was essentially country,” Smallbone says. “He was like, ‘Hey, man, I’m just going to go do this. If you guys want to come by, you can, but I know exactly what I need to do.’”

Brice did his vocal first, with Kyle’s memory informing his emotional performance. Though it’s a for King + Country recording with Brice the featured artist, Smallbone took the second verse and let Brice provide the song’s first voice, appropriate for a country production. The siblings found a two-part harmony moment, then supported Brice with three-part harmony on the third chorus, creating a sort of communal gathering of the principals for the finale.

“That song has messed me up in some cases, in a good way, because every time I talk to my dad, I’m aware,” Smallbone says. “He’s 74. He could have another 20 years or he could have another day. You just don’t know.”

That reality makes “Checking In” an emotional experience for many listeners, whether they’ve lost their father or just wonder when they will. Given that universal potential, Curb released it to country stations in secondary markets on Feb. 16. The creatives are less concerned about the audience numbers the song generates than the impact that it might have on those who do hear it and take its message to heart.

“You never know,” Brice says, “when it’s going to be too late.”

From ‘Cowboy Carter’ to summer concert season, country is king again

Beyoncé in her white Stetson at the Grammys.

Sound Check is the Globe’s weekly guide to concerts, tunes, and trends rooted in Boston and beyond. This column covers March 29-April 4.

This ain’t Texas — but it’s about to sound like it. Country music is king again in 2024. Or perhaps it’s more accurate to say queen, considering that the genre’s boosted popularity this year is a direct reaction to Beyoncé ’s new album “Cowboy Carter,” out Friday. Since releasing the Western singles “Texas Hold ‘Em” and “16 Carriages” — both unexpected pivots from Beyoncé’s 2022 house masterpiece “Renaissance” — the global icon has effectively lassoed her fans into the country camp.

True, Lana Del Rey divulging that she’s “going country” for her next record, plus the recent arrival of Kacey Musgraves ’ s LP “Deeper Well” certainly haven’t hurt country’s spike in visibility . But Beyoncé’s influence is undeniable here; fans were seeking her $440 white Stetson from this year’s Grammys get-up before she even announced the new album.

While Beyoncé has not yet announced a tour supporting “Cowboy Carter,” the region’s music calendar is flush with country shows this spring and summer. Tennessee duo Dan + Shay bring the “Heartbreak on the Map” tour to TD Garden on April 13 , accompanied by openers and fellow Nashvillians Ben Rector and Hailey Whitters . Brothers Osborne , another prominent pair, visit MGM Music Hall at Fenway on April 18 for their “Might As Well Be Us” tour.

The end of April offers an impressive roundup of rising acts, starting with a Paradise Rock Club show from viral TikToker and pop country singer Priscilla Block on April 26. New Jersey country rapper BRELAND will perform at The Sinclair on April 29 , followed by Americana act Amythyst Kiah ’s April 30 show at the Parlor Room in Northampton.

May uncorks a steady flow of shows from high-profile country acts, welcoming headliners like Tim McGraw ( May 10 at TD Garden ), Tyler Childers (headlining Boston Calling on May 25 ), Hank Williams Jr. ( June 8 at the Xfinity Center ), and Kane Brown ( July 20 at Fenway Park ). Zach Bryan ’s “Quittin Time” tour will stop at Gillette Stadium twice this summer: on June 26 with Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit , and again on July 17 with The War and Treaty .

For a more intimate (but equally authentic) experience, head to one of Boston’s Americana bars. Nash Bar , for instance, hosts Friday evening acoustic performances and Saturday country brunches, while regular showcases at Loretta’s Last Call keep the homegrown tunes flowing like moonshine.

Girlschool make a stop at the Paradise Friday on their final North American tour.

Girlschool salute the end of an era on their final North American tour at the Paradise Rock Club on Friday . Hailed as the “longest-tenured” all-women rock band, the British group has released more than a dozen records since forming in 1978, including last year’s “WTFortyfive?” honoring their 45th anniversary.

Meanwhile, across the Charles that night, garage shredder Kate Clover emboldens a new generation of femme-forward rock at the Middle East Upstairs . New Hampshire act Brad Marino opens the evening, which rallies around Clover’s forthcoming record “The Apocalypse Dream.”

Hear one of this century’s stickiest hooks — gleaned from the ecstatic GROUPLOVE single “Tongue Tied” — at the Atlanta-based band’s Roadrunner show on Friday . Sampha switches the venue’s vibe to instrumental-inflected electronica on Tuesday , featuring an opening set from Amherst artist and poet Mal Devisa .

British singer Sampha comes to Roadrunner Tuesday.

After Olivia Rodrigo spills her “Guts” at TD Garden on Monday and Tuesday , AJR continues the arena’s pop-rock marathon on Thursday . Anyone missing next week’s show can catch the New York brothers when they return to the Garden on Aug. 3 .

Vancouver singer-songwriter Haley Blais shares her 2023 record “Wisecrack” on Tuesday at the Red Room at Cafe 939 . On Wednesday , the venue welcomes a smattering of sounds from Montreal’s TEKE::TEKE — who swirl psychedelic rock, Japanese folk, and Brazilian surf, among other styles — and the Berklee-born “progressive funk” band Trophy Husband MA .

Scotland’s alternative hip-hop act Young Fathers launch a North American tour at The Sinclair on Wednesday , followed by a visit from New York indie rock collective San Fermin on Thursday , who last month shared their sprawling new album “Arms.”

NOW SPINNING

Chastity Belt , “Live Laugh Love.” The Pacific Northwest isn’t exactly known as a place of levity, but Seattle band Chastity Belt still find ways to eke out a smile on their fifth studio album (and first released via Suicide Squeeze Records). Piecing together various recording sessions from the last four years, “Live Laugh Love” presents a rewarding alt-rock slow burn; queue up “Kool-Aid” for a taste of the group’s self-reflective languor, or pick up the pace with breezy single “I-90 Bridge.”

Dutch ReBelle

Dutch ReBelle , “Danger.” Boston rapper Dutch ReBelle returns with a searing single that doubles as a creative manifesto. Reflecting on a brief hiatus, ReBelle swerves back into the spotlight with a barrage of self-assertive bars, including the stand-out affirmation, “Made my own lane/Y’all can’t reroute it.”

Blu DeTiger , “All I Ever Want Is Everything.” The debut studio album from vocalist and bassist Blu DeTiger — yes, that is her government name — perfects the New York artist’s signature funk-spiked pop across 14 tracks. Contributions from buzzy featured acts Magdalena Bay (“Disappearing”) and Mallrat ( “Cut Me Down” ) elevate “All I Ever Want Is Everything” to essential alt-pop listening in 2024.

BONUS TRACK

As part of the Boston Public Library’s recently announced “Revolutionary Music: Music and Social Change” programming — which examines music’s vital role in addressing social issues — the central branch in Copley Square hosts “Reclaiming Folk: Celebrating People of Color in Folk Music” next Thursday at 6 p.m. in Rabb Hall. The showcase will feature performances from area musicians Kim Moberg , Pamela Means , and event creator Naomi Westwater , as well as a poetry reading and conversation moderated by Boston poet laureate Porsha Olayiwola . Registration is required at bpl.bibliocommons.com/events.
