Pench Online Safari Booking :-
Some parts of the Pench tiger reserve fall in Madhya Pradesh (M.P.), while others are in Maharashtra. As a result, bookings can be made through the official site of either state. While Touria, Karmajhiri, and Jhamtara are the core area in the M.P. part of Pench tiger reserve, Sillari, Khursapar, and Chorbahuli are the gates in the Maharashtra core area.
Depending on the gate you choose, you can opt for online safari booking at our website. The bookings can be made 120 days before your visit. You are required to provide all details (name, age, gender, etc.) while booking the safari. Additionally, you must carry the same photo ID card (Aadhar, voter I.D., passport, driving license) with you that had been used to book your online safari.
Jeep Safari Note : Jeep safari is non sharing basis and maximum 6 persons are allowed in 1 jeep. Child below 5 years is complimentary and above 5 years treated as an adult.

- Only the passport is considered valid ID proof for foreign tourists, and they should carry it while taking their safari.
- Through the e-permit, only six tourists can enter the jungle. Thus, ensure that you obtain the required number of permits if traveling in a large group.
- Once online safari booking is done, it is non cancelable/transferable/ shareble/alterablecannot be transferred or altered without the official permission of the concerned forest department authority.
- Since the park falls between two states, the rules and regulations of both states should be followed. Therefore, familiarize yourself with the Dos and Dont's of safari at Pench is advised.
- The charges for the safari depend on the ride chosen (jeep or canter), the timing chosen (morning/evening or entire day), and whether they are going alone or in a group.

Since Pench offers an excellent chance to view the spectacular wildlife and a limited number of vehicles are allowed to enter the zones at a time, you are advised to prebook your safari. Though you are required to pay the entire safari amount in advance, you are guaranteed that you will be able to enter the forest.

These modifications to timings and cancelation of safari can be made by M.P. and Maharashtra Forest department officials.

The Ultimate Guide to Pench National Park Safari booking: How to Book, What to See, & Where to Stay
It just took a few minutes of the Pench Safari to realize why Rudyard Kipling was so inspired by this national park in Madhya Pradesh . As my safari jeep zoomed along, the emerald forest brought to life some of my favorite scenes from Jungle Book. Mowgli having fun with Baloo in one of the forest openings, Sher Khan lurking behind the deep green cover, Bagheera keeping an eye from the straggler trees along the way and even the pack of wolves running along with Mowgli. I was lucky enough to have spotted all these characters (almost all) in flesh with my safari in Pench National Park. It’s your turn now to embark on this real-life setting of the Jungle Book.

About Pench Tiger Reserve and its history
Named after the Pench River that flows through its 758 sq km of land , this forest was once the hunting grounds of the royalty and the rules of the Gond tribes. It became a protected area in 1965 to safeguard the habitat of the endangered tiger species and promote conservation efforts. In 1975, it was declared a national park and then as the Pench Tiger Reserve in 1992.
While it is widely known as one of the key national parks in MP (Madhya Pradesh) , around 40% of the Pench National Park also extends into the s t ate of Maharashtra . The forest is primarily a deciduous forest with an abundant population of teak and sal. The Pench Forest is home to over 250 species of birds and a variety of animals – besides the Royal Bengal Tiger for which is it famous.
Whether you visit the Pench National Park Maharashtra or in MP, you are bound to have an exhilarating experience spotting these exotic creatures in their natural habitat. However, in this guide, I will be largely focusing on the tiger reserve in MP.
Pench National Park Map and Zones
Before I start sharing my tips about the Pench National Park Safari booking, a quick section to understand the various zones inside the forest. This MP Pench National Park Map that I found during my stay with Pugdundee Safaris is just perfect to understand the expanse of this forest. You will need this information to understand your preference when you book a jungle safari in Pench.
Primarily like all national parks, Pench Forest has two major zones – the core and buffer . The difference between these two zones is that no human habitation or activity is allowed in the Core zones, unlike the buffer zone where you will find villages. On the Madhya Pradesh national park side, the Pench core zone is further divided into three zones –
- Turia Zone – The most popular for jeep safaris in Pench. There is a higher frequency of tiger sightings in this zone.
- Karmajhiri Zone: This zone is less busy than Turia Zone, but it is still home to a variety of wildlife. The zone is known for its bamboo forests, which are a favorite habitat of tigers.
- Jamtara Zone: This zone is located in the eastern part of the park
The Buffer zone of the Pench National Park in MP too, has three zones.
- Wolf Sanctuary – as the name suggests, there is a lot of wolf sightings here. It is also, called Khawasa Buffer Zone
- Teliya Zone – has a lot of grasslands and scrub vegetation. I did get one of my tiger sightings here.
- Rukhad – this has a hilly terrain and borders the Karmajhari zone.
On the Maharashtra side of Pench national park, you have two major core zones – Sillari and Khursapar . As I mentioned, if you are opting for a Pench National Park online booking, this information is likely to come in handy.
Which is the best gate for Pench National Park in MP?
Each of the three core zones has its own gate from where the Pench jungle safari begins. Of these, the Turia Gate is the most popular . When you start doing your Pench jungle safari booking, you will see that the number of permits on this gate is higher than the other gates. The reason is that this is where the maximum number of safari jeeps are allowed in. If you opt for a canter safari, then you will again have to start from Touria Gate Pench.
Karmajhari and Jamtara Gates , on the other hand, are comparatively quieter. There are a lesser number of jeeps allowed from here. No canters are available from here.
I used the Karmajhiri gate for both my safaris in Pench. However, I did cover all the possible zones from here. As per my Pugdundee naturalist – Deepa, “ The sighting opportunities from all the gates is almost the same. There is no particular advantage of one gate over the other. You are eventually going to cover all the major zones. It finally comes down to your luck”.
Types of Pench safaris in Madhya Pradesh
There are three types of safaris that you can book in Pench Madhya Pradesh
- Pench National Park Jeep Safaris – these are according to me, the best option. The jeeps are easier to maneuver and allow you to get a good look at any possible animals that you might spot. One jeep can seat around 6 people – besides a guide and a driver. You can opt to either book a seat in one of the jeeps or book the entire vehicle.
- Night Safaris – This is available only in the buffer zone of Rukhad and Wolf Sanctuary. You get an experience of how the jungle feels at night.
- Canter Safaris – This is available only at the Turia Gate Pench. There is a limit of two canters at the gate. The canters being slightly longer have a certain limitation of routes. My advice to you is that opt for these only if there are no more Jeep permits available when doing your Pench tiger reserve booking.
The Maharashtra side of Pench does not offer night safari. Instead, you can opt for the daytime Elephant safari that takes you where even the jeeps can wander.
Pench Safari Timings
The Jeep and Canter safaris in Pench can be booked in two slots –
- Morning Safari – this is a 5 hours safari between 6 am to 11 am during summer. During winter, the safari starts a little later at 7:30 am and ends by 10:30 am.
- Afternoon Safari – from 2:30 pm to 6 pm
Night safari is available at 6 pm and generally lasts for around 3 hours.
What is the Pench National Park Safari booking price?
The Pench national park ticket prices displayed outside the Karmajhari gate in 2023 are as in the picture. Note that there are three components to the safari booking – the permit cost, the vehicle cost and the guide cost. All these need to be paid for the safari – though you might only need to pay the permit fee online. The rest has to be paid at the entry gate.
To give you an idea, a single-seat booking will cost you INR 1600 while a complete jeep safari in Pench will cost you INR 7500.
How to book Pench Safari?
The most convenient way to do a Pench safari booking is using the official MP f orest department website. You can book safari in Pench 120 days in advance. There is a limited number of permits per day and per gate. It is highly recommended that you book as early as possible to get the zones and gates of your choice. Naturalists recommend at least 45 days prior to getting your choice.
The other option is to book one of the Pench jungle safari packages through the resort that you are opting to stay with. These packages include not just the Pench national park permit but the transport to the gates. In the case of Pugdundee Safaris (with whom I had stayed), for a nominal cost, you even get a trained naturalist to accompany you. The benefit of these packages is more if you are booking closer to the safari date and the online permits are exhausted. The resort packages can help you with the Tatkal bookings.
Documents required for the Pench safari booking
You will need a Government Photo ID card for booking a Pench national park permit. For Indians, this could be Aadhar, PAN Card, Voters ID, Driving license or Passport copy. Foreigners have to use their Passports for ID purposes. Kids can use their student ID.
The details of these ID cards have to be entered when doing the Pench Safari booking online. Please ensure that you carry the same ID card when you visit Pench. This will be checked at the gates and can get rejected if they are not the same.
Step-by-step process for Pench online booking on the official website
The online process of booking safari in Pench is actually much simpler today as compared to a few years back. Here is the stepwise process –
- On the bottom left of the website, click the button that says “want to log in?” . Register yourself and your bank account with your mobile number first.
- Next, click on the Book Permit section
- Choose whether you want to book a single seat in a Jeep or a full Jeep
- Next, pick the date that you wish to book the permit. This will take you to a screen that displays the available permits per gate and safari slots (morning or afternoon).
- Select your slot and move to the next screen
- Here you have to enter the details of the traveler. Remember to fill in the exact ID details and the correct spelling here. Also, ensure you carry the same id on the day of your visit to avoid any rejection due to a mismatch of details.
- Submit and pay for your permit. This price is only the permit price. You will have to pay for the vehicle and guide at the Pench national park gates.
- Download your permit and ensure you have it handy when you visit Pench National Park.
Every safari in Pench has an exclusive permit. Hence, you will need to go through this entire booking process for every safari that you book at Pench National Park.
It is possible that you see a waitlist instead of a confirmed permit. Avoid the waitlist as it is unlikely to get confirmed. Instead, if you are not flexible with the dates, you can opt for Tatkal bookings. Do note that this option is available only a day or two prior to the safari dates.
If you do not want to take that chance, you can always reserve a permit through your resort. Sure, there might be higher charges but you are likely to get a confirmed booking along with a few other perks like transport to the gates.
P.S: You can use the same online booking process and the website for the other MP National parks like Kanha and Bandhavgarh.
How many safaris should you book in Pench?
At least 2 – 3 safaris are what I would recommend. Take a mix of morning and afternoon safaris to increase your chances of seeing the wildlife. One safari is honestly too much of a chance.
Which is better – morning safari or afternoon safari?
Statistics say that there is an equal chance of spotting the big cats on either one of the slots. Even experts like our naturalist Deepa endorse the same.
However, my personal experience with Kanha , Kabini , Tadoba and even Pench has made me feel that morning slots are always more rewarding than the afternoon safaris.
What is the best time to visit Pench National Park?
Pench National Park is closed during monsoons – that is from July 1 st to October 15th. It is open for the rest of the year, except on two or three public holidays. The best time for tiger sightings is generally from February to May or even early June.
February to March has heat which is a little bearable – making it easy to sit through the entire safari. However, April to June has scorching temperatures. Having said that, this is when the thirst brings out the cats to the waterholes and thus, making the sightings easier.
The winter months too, are not too bad. You are likely to still see the striped beasts and the spotted cats but there are plenty more interesting creatures that are likely to make an appearance.
What kind of wildlife or Pench national park animals can you expect to see on your safari?
You will find almost every character in the epic Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling. Over my two morning safaris, I met almost all the Pench national park animals except Baloo (the sloth bear who is known to be elusive ).
My Pench jungle safari even included some rare birds and insects. Let me share some quirky facts about these Pench animals and birds that you will enjoy reading. I am sure that this will increase the curiosity quotient and the wanderlust for Pench National Park.
Tigers – aka Sher Khan
These striped tigers are the reason why this place is called Pench Tiger Reserve. There are over 50 tigers in Pench . The most famous tigress here was called Collarwali – so named as she was the first to be fitted with a radio collar. I was hoping to get to Pench earlier in 2020 to catch sight of her. Unfortunately, she died in 2022.
However, I did get a sight of her daughter and it was such a timely sighting. Following the calls of the chitals and the langurs, we arrived just in time to stand behind the already waiting jeeps. Within minutes, she popped out and walked around a bit before turning into the thickets.
During the second safari, I was rewarded with the sight of 2 cubs (out of the four) and their mom, far in the grassland, near a waterhole. This one was a game of patience. The guides knew that the tigress with her cubs had crossed over into the hill. Staring into the greens, with the warm sun on me, I was almost nodding off when I saw something jump. And then a quick sighting.
Minutes passed and we were finally rewarded with the sight of a male cub walking towards the waterhole. He disappeared for a few moments, only to walk on a small cliff into a shelter of rocks. Patience persisted and finally we not only saw him but his sister walk past towards the hidden mom. Though far, it was truly a rewarding sight!
Leopards – cousins of Bagheera
If it isn’t the tigers, you are likely to bump into the spotted cats – the leopards. However, unlike the tigers, they are likely to emerge from not just the thickets but can be on the tree tops or rock caverns. Technically they are not cousins of Bagheera (the black panther). They are in fact, the same species. It is just that the genetic mutations cause the black spots to cover the whole body, giving it the color black.
There are no black panthers currently in Pench National Park. The famous ones in India are Blacky who is currently roaming around Tadoba and Saya who is in Kabini.
This time in Pench Tiger Reserve, I got lovely sightings of a leopard cub. In fact, I managed to see him on both jungle safaris – lazing on the rocky terrain of Pyorthadi , yawning and preening and playing with his sister (who I could not spot from the jeep). The 2 nd day in fact, was the best when he posed and looked right into my camera.
Jackals
Found these guys in the early hours of our Pench jungle safari. It was a family with their pups, frolicking around the grassland and not afraid to walk past the jeeps. The interesting tidbit about them is that they are one set of creatures who are known to be monogamous by nature.
Dholes in Pench National Park
Anyone doing a Pench jungle safari booking usually fixates on the big cats. So when a very wolf or dog-looking creature passes the jeep, they rarely stop. This is where I would say, do not underestimate the Dholes.
Always in a pack, they are known to enclose and attack their prey. They can even bring down a leopard. The Indian wild dogs or dholes are endangered species that definitely merit some attention.
The Indian bison or Gaurs are supposedly one of the largest mammals in the world . Staring at one of their massive faces, I felt myself shuddering a little. Just then Deepa quoted – “ Their horns can be really huge and if they get angry, they can actually overturn our jeep.” Gulp!
You might get excited when you see the first one or two herds of these spotted deers or chitals. However, after a point, they will begin to feel like pigeons in the city. They are practically everywhere.
During your Pench safaris, heed to their call and gaze. It is their distress call that will help you track the presence of a predator – likely a tiger or a leopard.
Monkeys – Langurs and Macaques
Found in groups, the Gray Langurs are like the sentries who along with the Chitals give out distress calls that are used by the Pench guides to track the predatory cats. Spend a moment or two observing the wise ones. It is interesting to see how protective they are of the mischievous young ones. They tend to climb up high on branches when they hear the distress calls – very evidently to look out for the predators so that they can further communicate to the rest of the group.
The other group of monkeys commonly found in Pench is the Rhesus Macaques . They are not as active guards as the langurs and are just found frolicking around the woods.
Other mammals to look out for
Besides the above, I caught the sight of a few sambar deer and wild boars. I believe there are a few sloth bears lurking around but as Baloo claims in Jungle book, they love their naps and probably were doing so as we made our rounds in the safari.
Birds to spot during the Pench national park jeep safari
If you are an avid bird lover, then you should only opt for a jeep safari as against the canter safari. Since you can control the pace of the drive, you can actually stop and track some real winged beauties during your Pench Safari.
Harish, the resort manager at Pugdundee’s Tree Lodge told me – “ Look out for the Indian rollers . Whenever I have spotted one, I have always spotted a big cat.” And so I did. At the start of both the safaris in Pench, I spotted a few rollers and I can say that the myth might just actually be true. While it is a state bird for Karnataka, I always missed spotting it – be it in Sakleshpur or birdwatching in Kabini. Finally, Pench was the place for me to see it.
Peacocks are practically everywhere and if you are as lucky as I was, you will see one performing a dance for its mate, right next to you. The Pench terrain is just a perfect backdrop for these birds. You might find them perched on a rocky with the green landscape behind them – the scene almost as if it were a muse for an artist.
Besides these, look out for the swooping Grey hornbills with their tell-tale casque over the yellow beak. I even spotted the Serpentine eagle and the Changeable hawk eagle . Among the owls species (and there are many) – I managed to catch a pair of Mottle wood owl nuzzling each other. And that definitely made me go all “Awww….”
Indian Pittas (the bird with 9 colors), starlings, paradise flycatchers – there is plenty happening in the forest that one safari is not going to capture. I will be sharing a complete post on birding in Pench soon but for now, you get the idea.
What are the common trees or vegetation that you can see in Pench?
The deciduous forest is filled with teak and sal trees. However, you will see a lot of them covered by parasitic straggler trees . Some of the parasitic growth goes across the trails in the form of artistic canopies.
There are a lot of Ghost trees – easily recognizable by their white color. Originally called Kulu trees , these change color in every season. When they shed their leaves and bark, they turn white and actually shine in the moonlight. In some seasons, the bark turns pink.
Tendu, rock figs, palash, mahua are some common species that you are going to come across. When in season, you will also see the burst of color with the Flame of the forest .
Where to stay in Pench National Park in Madhya Pradesh?
There are several accommodation options available for visitors to Pench National Park in Madhya Pradesh. These accommodations range from luxury resorts to budget-friendly lodges . It is better to pick an option near your preferred Pench National Park gate .
If you are looking at safaris from Touria Gate, then you can consider Pench Jungle Camp , Tathastu Pench , Tuli Tiger Corridor or the Vannraj resort . I stayed at the Pench tree lodge – a resort that I highly recommend. This was closer to the Karmajhiri gate . Check out my complete experience of this through this link . You can use the same one to book a stay.
I highly recommend booking your Pench stay in advance, especially during peak seasons, to ensure availability. Also, each of these resorts has limited capacity – like the Pench tree lodge by Pugdundee only has 12 options- 6 tree hours and 6 cottages.
How to reach Pench national park in MP?
The nearest airport to Pench National Park is Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport in Nagpur, Maharashtra. The distance from Pench to Nagpur is 88 kilometer s. From the airport, you can hire a taxi or use pre-arranged transportation services to reach Pench National Park.
If you are planning to get to Pench National Park by train, then you can opt for Seoni Railway Station which is just 30 kilometers away . However, it has limited connectivity. Nagpur Junction might be a better option as it is well-connected to various cities in India.
Nagpur to Pench National Park is a very comfortable road journey that takes around 3 hours.

Pench National Park: A safari guide’s tips on the best time to visit, permits, hotels
By Arundhati Ail
In the heart of India, the Pench river, a tributary of the Kanhan river, cuts Pench National Park almost perfectly in half. The woodlands of the park are rich with prey species and the watering holes created by the river draw out wild boars, jackals, deer, bison and gaur. And often, lurking in the bushes behind them is the star of the show, the Bengal tiger .
Scattered across the 758 sq km of the park in Madhya Pradesh , tigers are the park’s most powerful predators. The big cats are solitary and strong-willed creatures, willing to traverse long distances to stalk their prey. Sighting one is a quiet and slow game in Pench that requires you to be as inconspicuous as possible. Prabhir Patil—or “Pat”, as he is more commonly known—has perfected the art over decades in the wild. “One can truly understand animals in their natural habitat when they finally ignore your presence,” says the head naturalist and guide at luxury safari lodge Pench Jungle Camp.
Born and raised in Nagpur, Patil grew up visiting the forest every chance he could get. “When I came to Pench in 1997, there was no tar road to reach the Turia gate and not a single resort or lodge in Pench or Tadoba,” he says. “I would just take a bus to Mowgli gate in Tadoba or cycle up to the national park wall because I was so curious.” He would even volunteer with NGOs for census work in the forests, living with forest guards and patrolling the area on foot everyday. “Whenever the jungle would call me, I would go,” he says. Here, Patil draws from his 15 years of experience in guiding and birding to offer insider tips for your next trip to Pench National Park.
A tiger in the bushes
What makes Pench National Park special?
Pench used to be a sanctuary and became a national park in 1975. Given the number of tigers it houses, it was established as a tiger reserve in 1992. Though most focus on the part of Pench that lies in Madhya Pradesh, about 40% of the forest lies in Maharashtra . “Guides at Pench typically highlight that there are 33 tigers across about 758 sq km at Pench. I tell tourists there are at least 100 tigers and 100 leopards living in the whole forest area which spans 2,000 sq km across Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. Animals don’t see a separation between the two states, it’s all one forest,” says Patil.
Generations of tigers have inhabited the park for decades. The park is also famous for the Collarwali Tigress, who passed away in 2022 after giving birth to 29 cubs in eight litters through her lifetime. She was the first tiger in the park to be fitted with a radio collar, which enabled park officials to study her behaviour. Tiger sightings were rare at Pench before her. But she became the most sighted tigress at the park and would often come close to tourist vehicles. Collarwali Tigress caused a major surge in visitor numbers at Pench and was well-loved among wildlife enthusiasts.
What to spot at Pench National Park?
The Bengal Tiger is undoubtedly the star attraction at Pench. It’s been 22 years since Patil saw his first tiger but for him, every sighting remains just as special. “I’ve seen generations of tigers in this forest. But even now, every time I see a tiger, I feel lucky,” he says. “In 2005, when I was out on a safari, I saw a leopard in the distance chasing a spotted deer. The deer was running towards a group of four young tigers, who were the cubs of “badi mata” (the mother of the Collarwali Tigress). The tigers began running after the leopard, who climbed up a tree to save its life. In the end, the tigers had surrounded the tree and it was almost like they were challenging the leopard to come down and face them.” Of course, there are scarier sightings too. “Less than a month ago, I was out on a safari early in the morning with guests. We were the only jeep in the area and we heard some langur calls. The next moment, there was a tiger charging towards our vehicle. She came very close to our jeep and then just turned away and went back. The guests were shivering and they didn’t want to see any more wildlife after that,” says Patil. He highlights the need to stay calm in moments like these. This is the tigress’ way of asking you to keep away, he says, and it’s important to respect that.
Beyond the big cats, Pench is great for spotting wild dogs, the Indian gaur, leopards, cheetal, sambar, nilgai, jackals, bison, jungle cats, leopards, palm civets, black bears and more. The park is also home to a variety of birds, including peacocks, crow pheasant, peafowl, pintail, lesser whistling teal, Indian roller, wagtail, munia, waterfowl, blue kingfisher, crimson-breasted barbet and red-vented bulbul. “Even if you don’t see a lot of animals when you visit, you will always see birds at Pench,” says Patil.

For Patil, guiding a safari isn’t just about spotting a tiger. “Most people take the jeep out and drive everywhere looking for tigers. But I’m not a tiger spotter. I want to spot the diverse wildlife and flora of the forest, even smaller things like flowers, birds, spider webs. That’s my way of showing people how to see the forest,” he says. “I am usually the slowest driver in the forest and I stop the vehicle often. You have to listen to what the jungle is telling you. There might be an alarm call by a sambar deer, a spotted deer or a monkey. Peacocks sometimes give an alarm call, which means a predator bird or carnivorous animal may be around. I also listen for jungle babblers—I call them the police of the forest . They are always able to spot something fishy—an owl, snake or a jungle cat.”
What’s the best time to visit Pench National Park?
Winter, which lasts from November to February , is a great time to visit Pench. The weather at this time remains pleasant for wildlife sightings and nature walks. However, according to Patil, the best time to visit is between February and March. This is when winter is just starting to fade away and the scorching summer hasn’t quite set in. “At this time of year, the peacocks begin to spread their wings to attract the peahens—it’s breeding season for them—and the birds begin to chirp just a little bit louder. It feels like animals are in a good mood during this time,” says Patil. During summer, temperatures touch 40°C and the harsh weather makes sightseeing difficult for tourists. However, this is a great time for tiger sightings since dry weather brings thirsty tigers to water bodies more frequently.
How many safaris should you do during a three-night stay?
Increasing the frequency of safaris increases the likelihood of sighting tigers and other wildlife. Patil recommends at least two-three safaris—two in the morning and one in the afternoon, ideally—along with other local experiences. He also encourages guests to explore the Maharashtra side of Pench (at gates like Sillari and Khursapar), which offers distinct landscapes, flora and fauna as compared to the part of Pench that lies in Madhya Pradesh.
What are the safari slots?
There's a lot to spot at Pench beyond tigers
Morning and afternoon safaris offer the same wildlife viewing opportunities, but chances of spotting animals may differ. “The morning safari is the preferred option as it lasts up to five hours—as compared to the three-and-a-half-hour afternoon safari—making it an ideal choice for wildlife enthusiasts,” says Patil. Morning light also provides favourable conditions for photography.

How to book a safari permit at Pench and how much does it cost?
You will need to book a safari from the government website to enter the park. Patil recommends booking a permit well in advance, especially if you plan on visiting the Turia gate, which is known for tiger sightings. Permits for Indians cost Rs2,450* for weekdays and Rs3,050* for weekends. The cost is usually double for foreign nationals. It’s best to plan your trip on weekdays, when the rush of tourists is significantly lesser. But do note that the Turia gate remains shut on Wednesdays. It’s best to book safari permits well in advance—45-60 days—to gain entry into preferred zones.
How to book a jeep and guide
If you have a valid safari permit, a jeep and guide will be assigned to you at the gate by the forest department. You can also pick a guide of your choice at an extra cost. Having a knowledgeable naturalist on your safaris can make all the difference. Look for someone with extensive knowledge of the forest and its wildlife and pay attention to their advice and directions.
Spotted deer
A forest department jeep typically costs Rs3,000*, while a guide usually charges Rs600* per safari. If you are staying at a jungle lodge or wildlife resort, you can request them to arrange a guide and safari for you at an extra charge.
Which zones are the best?
A female leopard
Pench is a smaller park as compared to Kanha or Bandhavgarh , and does not have a zone system. The park has three entry gates: Turia, Karmajhari and Jamtara. Turia Gate is considered to be the best for tiger spotting and is also the most popular among tourists. But there’s a lot more to explore at Pench beyond Turia. “It’s important to talk about different parts of the forest—the national park, the sanctuary, the buffer area—which spans 2000 sq ft—and the water bodies in between,” says Patil. “No one takes tourists to those areas because everyone only wants to spot the tiger.” Beyond the Turia gate, Patil also recommends exploring the Khawasa buffer area, the Khursapar gate, the Rukkhad gate or the Sillari gate in Maharashtra. Patil’s favourite area in the forest is Sitaghat. “It’s a really nice, secluded area where you won’t find a lot of jeeps. The landscape there is beautiful and great for birdwatching.”

Best Safari Gates (Safari Zones) at Pench National Park
Planning to visit a national park is an exciting feeling for everyone. Pench is the only national park in India which occupies the area of two states, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. Though this park covers a wide area, it is must for every visitor to plan well in advance before visiting this national park. Selecting the Best Gates in Pench for Safari is one of the very important task before planning the Trip.
Choose the Right Safari Gate in Pench National Park
For every jungle safari trip, it is quite necessary to book the permits well in advance and for the right entry gates. As there are so many gates, one must plan properly before booking the forest permits. A tourist must research in detail about the park and its different entry gates. Generally, tourist books multiple safaris from different gates in an excitement to sight a Tiger. However, it may not be always possible to reach out to different entry gates due to its distance from your accommodation.
It takes lot of time to travel between different gates. Also, these are the different entry gates but you have excess to the same forest. Generally, at Pench when you book a permit for any of the Core Zones you have access to the same core forest. It is only that the entry points are different. Buffer zones are independent and have no connections with the Core Zones.
In order to avoid this problem, we must always check the different gates and their distances. It is always favourable for the tourists to book the gate for safari ride near to your tour accommodation (Resorts).
About the Forest
Pench National Park or Pench Tiger Reserve is located on the border of Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, which is at 70 kms. from Nagpur. Pench National Park is located on the boundary of Seoni and Chhindwara districts of Madhya Pradesh, close to Maharashtra’s northern border. The park is named after the Pench river.
Best Gates (Zones) in Pench National Park
The Madhya Pradesh side of the Forest is divided into Core Zones and Buffer Zones. The entire Pench forest has six different entry gates. Out of 6 entry gates, 3 gates are in the Cores Zones and 3 in the Buffer. The 3 Gates in the core zones are Turia gate, Karmajheri gate, and Jamtara gate. And the other 3 gates in the buffer zones are Rukhhad, Khawasa and Teliya.
The most famous gate of all the gates, is the Turia Gate, in the Core Zone. Maximum Tiger Sighting happens in this zone. Turia gate lies almost on the border of Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra close to the NH7. Most of the resorts are located towards this zone which is in the southern part of the forest.
Karmajheri Gate
This gate is less busy and with limited accommodation, Forest rest houses are also located at this gate. This part of the forest is majorly covered with Teak Trees.
Jamtara Gate
This is the third gate of the park and offers a limited area of the park to explore. One has the option of crossing over to other zones from Chendia ghat.
Our Upcoming Trips
Rukhad buffer.
As this area is in the hilly region. Rukhad is also a crucial Tiger corridor for Pench and Kanha. Guests have the option to do a jeep safari in this buffer. This is better suited when one is staying near the Karmajhiri gate.

Teliya Buffer
Known For its wolf sighting, this new Buffer zone is hailing with its Black Panther/ Melanistic Leopard sightings. Besides Leopard, teliya buffer offers wonderful sightings of Barking Deer, Chowsingha and Blue-Bull Antelope.
The Maharashtra side of the Penh Forest has 2 Core Zones. Khursapar Zone which is very close to the Turia Gate and the other core zone is Sillari Gate.
Khursapar gate:.
At a distance of 12 km from Khawasa and 30 km from Turia, Khursapar is another most popular safari zone of Pench National Park on Maharashtra Side. The entry gate of the zone is situated at Khursapar village. It is the most famous zone among day tourists as the chances of spotting the wild predators in their natural habitats is high in this zone.
Sillari gate:
This gate is 30kms away from Turia gate. The whole jungle is very beautiful with a mix of many type of habitat. There are open grassy patch, dense wooded patch, rocky and bushy patch, thick bamboo patch, dry open hilly area and freshwater streams. The following is important to note
1. Once a safari ticket is booked, no changes/modifications are allowed by the Forest Department.
2. You must carry valid photo identification, preferably the same as on your safari ticket. The forest officials are extremely strict in matching details submitted for entry tickets and actual guests in Gypsy at the time of park entry.
3. It becomes extremely cold during park rounds so carry adequate woollen clothing during the winters and most early morning safaris.
4. ‘The Pench International’ provides packed breakfast for morning park rounds and drinking water for evening park rounds.
5. Do carry your camera, binoculars, and bird identification book.
6. Online safari booking opens 120 days prior to the date of the safari required. Please confirm with our reservations desk.
pench national park
Madhya Pradesh
Pench National Park, a teak forest, located in the states of Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, is named after the river Pench which divides the park into two. This park shot into prominence with an increase in wildlife tourism in the year 2002. However, it was even before tourism began, that the park was discovered by Rudyard Kipling and penned as a memoir forever with his famous “Jungle Book”. Still, home to the ferocious Sher Khan and cuddly Baloo, Pench resonates with the whispers of our favorite bedtime story.
Primarily a teak forest, this park is an amalgamation of four different hill ranges. Pench National park also forms a healthy corridor with Kanha National Park. In fact, there have been records of Tigers moving from Kanha to Pench, which is about 200kms. It is also home to another big cat, the elusive Leopard. Sloth Bears, Indian Gaur, Wild Dogs, Sambars, Langurs, and over 300 species of birds also call Pench their home.

ABOUT PENCH NATIONAL PARK
A total of 758 sq. km of this Southern Indian tropical moist deciduous forest has its extent mingling with the tropical dry deciduous teak. The area is crisscrossed by a number of streams and ‘nallahs’ most of which are seasonal. Though the Pench River dries up toward the end of April, a number of water pools locally known as ‘dohs’ are found here, which serve as water holes for the wild animals. The Pench Reservoir at the center of the park is the only major water source during the pinch period.
As the prey concentration is high along the Pench River, Tigers usually inhabit and frequents this belt. Leopards, though generally operating in the peripheral areas of the jungle, are occasionally seen in the deep forest also.

ROYAL BENGAL TIGER
His majesty, the national animal of India. The Royal Bengal Tiger is considered by many naturalists as one of the most powerful apex predators. You catch a glimpse of this big cat in action at the Pench National Park.
INDIAN LEOPARD
It has larger rosettes than the other subspecies, with a paler coat in desert habitats, greyer in colder climes and more ochre in rainforest habitats. They remain well-camouflaged at night but come down from trees to hunt during the day.
Shaggy, dusty, and unkempt, the reclusive sloth bear makes its home in the forests of South Asia. Emitting noisy grunts and snorts, it wanders alone, usually at night, in search of insects and fresh fruit.
SAFARIS AT PENCH NATIONAL PARK
JEEP SAFARIS
Pench National Park conducts two types of jeep safaris. A full day safari and a half day safari.
Half Day Jeep Safari: A half day jeep safaris can be further categorized as a morning safari and an evening safari. The morning safaris start around 0600 hours depending on the sunrise time and lasts for about 4.5-5 hours. After the morning safari, the guest heads back to the lodge/resort. You can freshen up, eat a quick lunch, relax for a bit and later head back in to the jungle for your evening safari. The evening safari lasts for about 3 – 3.5 hours depending on the time of sunset. Post your evening safari, you head back to the lodge for dinner and take the rest of the evening at leisure.
Full Day Jeep Safari: A full day safari is a jeep safari wherein your vehicle/jeep enters the park 15-20 minutes prior to all other safari vehicles. You spend the day within the national park, including eating lunch amidst the forest wilderness. You head back out 15 minutes after all the jeeps have exited the park post the evening safari. This type of safari proves more fruitful during pleasant months like October – November or even the fag end of February – March. A full day safari is also mostly taken by professional photographers who are following a particular species or documentarians who wish to film a specific family within the national park.

Tigers occupy the pinnacle of the food chain and a healthy tiger population is an indicator of the well being of the whole forest. Throughout evolution, predators have had a regulatory influence on the population sizes of other species; it is thanks to carnivores, such as tigers, that the number of herbivores is kept in check. In turn, the populations can therefore only fluctuate between certain limits because of this “feedback mechanism”. With the number of herbivores under control, but not depleted, the forest vegetation is likely to thrive provided humans do not over exploit it. Seeds will be dispersed by new growth will not be prevented by excessive grazing pressure. Healthy vegetation protects the rainwater and safeguards the water table. Many forest are important catchments areas for rivers, upon which many species, including human beings, depend. Species at the top of the food chain are generally larger and require more space than other animals, particularly if they are territorial . Conserving such species in the wild protects the habitat of many other animals, as well as safeguarding the essential ecological processes such as water and nutrient cycling. Thus the tiger is the guardian of many other creatures.

The Jungle Book connection
No child has come to their teenage years, without reading or watching 'The Jungle Book.' The escapade of the little boy Mowgli, the Bagheera, and the villain Sher Khan written by Rudyard Kipling was inspired by the beauty of Pench National Park. The places described in 'The Jungle Book' are the locations marked at Alikatta village and the Seeonee hills. This is the reason, Pench Tiger Reserve is also popularly known as 'Land of The Jungle Book.'
Flora and Fauna
The vegetation of the Reserve is southern tropical, it is a bit moist teak forest and dry mixed deciduous forest.
A magnificent expanse in Madhya Pradesh, Pench Tiger Reserve, though is a tiger territory, it also shelters a dense population of cheetal (Spotted Deer), followed by leopard, sambhar, gaur (Indian bison), chousingha (four-horned antelope), chinkara (Indian gazelle), barking deer, small Indian civet, and porcupine. It is also home to the migratory birds such as Malabar pied hornbill, Indian pitta and osprey.
From deer to wild boar to tigers, MP has a realm of wildlife. A tour of Madhya Pradesh's wilderness is a kind of never to miss opportunity. It is also interesting to know that the one of the best wildlife series on tigers so far, 'Tiger: Spy in the Jungle' is also filmed in Pench National Park. The series was shot with the use of 'trunk cams'; the cameras held by elephants' trunks, to follow four newborn tiger cubs all the way to adulthood.

Watching tigers, birds and several other animals strolling in the woods during the day or night jungle safari or visiting the Kariya Summit hill (popularly known as Kalia hill) at Pench Tiger Reserve will bring back the thrill you used to have while watching Mowgli battle Sher Khan.

However, November to March could be the best months for bird watching when birds come to central India from colder areas to spend winter. You should avoid Monsoon season if you are looking forward to jungle safari as it is kept closed for the safety of both tourists and animals.
