EpiPen Carrying Cases

If you carry an auto-injector for epinephrine (such as an EpiPen ) due to severe allergies, you need a way to keep it with you, safely and securely at all times.

You're probably familiar with this dilemma: Should you put it in a bag (meaning you need to carry the bag everywhere you go, with no exceptions)? Should you leave the auto-injector in the car (risking that you won't be near the car when you need it)? Or should you stick it in a pocket (just not practical for summer or for tight-fitting outfits)?

Fortunately, others have tried to solve this problem, meaning there's now a wide variety of epinephrine auto-injector cases on the market. Many are aimed at kids, but a few would suit adults too. You easily can wear these carriers, and several are reader favorites. Read on for four different options you may find work well for you.

Allergy Apparel

Allergy Apparel sells a variety of auto-injector carriers, ranging from colorful pouches for kids to athletic-minded armbands for adults.

The carriers are stylish and come in different sizes, depending on which brand of auto-injector you carry. You can choose a single epinephrine carrier, a double, or a jumbo carrier. Allergy Apparel was started by a mom whose eldest son was diagnosed with food allergies before he was one year old. In addition to epinephrine auto-injector carriers, the company also offers medical ID jewelry and other allergy-specific gear.

AllerMates , which also sells medical ID jewelry, offers small cases and pouches in which you can carry epinephrine auto-injectors. There are a variety of different sized medical pouches with designs for adults and kids.

The company was born when a mom tried to come up with a way to teach her son about his allergies and asthma . She created cartoon characters and discovered that kids can learn about complex and important medical issues relatively easily if you teach them in a friendly, non-threatening way. AllerMates' products have been a perennial reader favorite.

Kozygo pouches, handcrafted in Canada, can hold either one or two auto-injectors, depending on which model you choose. They sell pouches that can hold up to four items including a combination of inhalers, auto-injectors, and other life-saving medications.

The pouches are made of durable neoprene and zip closed. The inside of the cases has a loop sized just right for attaching a medical ID.

The pouches come in patterns that range from plain and simple solids to hip graphic designs. Each design can be ordered as a waist belt, buckle, or clip-on styles that can be attached to a belt or bag. The waist belt can be modified to be worn over the shoulder, which makes the pouch look like a small, fashionable purse. These have been another reader favorite over the years.

Ouch Pouch Cases

Ouch Pouch sells epinephrine auto-injector cases through an Etsy store and has since 2009. Inventor Karen Kellington started the company after her workplace had closed, and she decided to go into business herself using an original design for a mini first aid kit she calls an “Ouch Pouch.” The Ouch Pouch is now patented and Karen has sold over 15,000 of them, each one of them made by hand.

Karen began making auto-injector cases after several customers asked her to custom-make one for them. The cases come in stylish fabrics that range from designer florals to kid-friendly owls and cars. The cases snap closed and have a clear front pocket.

Karen has food allergies herself, and her motto is: "If you have to carry around allergy pens, make it fun!"

Adult and child packing suitcase together

  • Have a Plan

Life doesn't just happen at home.

Whether you’re hitting the open road or heading to the airport, travel can become more complicated when you or your child has an increased risk for a life-threatening or severe allergic emergency (anaphylaxis). That’s why it’s important to be careful to avoid allergens anywhere you go. And wherever life takes you, don’t forget to pack EPIPEN ® (epinephrine injection, USP) or EPIPEN JR ® (epinephrine injection, USP) Auto-Injectors (or their authorized generics)

By taking a few precautions, you can reduce the risk of a life-threatening allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) while flying.

  • Start with a little research Before booking a flight, ask your healthcare professional about your risk of anaphylaxis aboard an aircraft and about key precautions you can take. If you're cleared for air travel, call your airline to report your potentially life‑threatening allergies and find out about the foods and snacks being served on your flights. Before you leave, locate an allergist or hospital near your destination, just in case.
  • B.Y.O.F. (bring your own food) Rather than relying on airport food vendors or the airline, pack your own snacks for the trip, and bring extra in case you're delayed. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) permits air travelers to carry food from home onto planes—just make sure it's wrapped or in a container.
  • TSA regulations for medications You may request that your EPIPEN Auto-Injectors or their authorized generic be inspected visually rather than X-rayed since the effects of X-rays on epinephrine are unknown. Make sure your epinephrine auto-injectors and other medications are clearly labeled; you may want to write your name on them as well. It’s not necessary, but you may want to also bring a note from your physician explaining that your auto-injector contains epinephrine—a medicine for anaphylaxis.
  • Speak up at the gate When you reach your gate, tell the airline staff about your severe allergy. While airlines can’t always guarantee flights will be free of your allergic triggers, they may avoid using latex products or ask passengers in your row and in the rows around you to refrain from eating your trigger food(s).
  • In case of anaphylaxis, alert the crew right away If you or any children with severe allergies begin to experience anaphylaxis, administer EPIPEN or EPIPEN JR Auto-Injector (or their authorized generics) and then immediately tell a member of the flight crew.
  • Always carry your EPIPEN or EPIPEN JR Auto‑Injectors Pack your EPIPEN 2‑PAK ® or EPIPEN JR 2-PAK ® (or their authorized generics) in your carry‑on bag. When you board the plane, keep it with you, not in the overhead bin—if you need it, you’ll want to be able to access it quickly.

By taking a few precautions, you can reduce the risk of a life-threatening allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) while traveling.

  • Plan your meals Before you leave home, decide how and where you’re going to eat. You’ll want to pack plenty of nonperishable, allergen‑free foods for the ride, as well as research restaurants and make reservations for your trip. If there are special foods you need (or like) that may not be available at your destination, stock up before you leave.
  • Consult Allergyeats.com Allergyeats.com provides a searchable database of many allergy‑friendly restaurants across the country.
  • Check your meds Be sure to check the expiration dates of all medications, including your EPIPEN Auto‑Injectors (or their authorized generic). Make sure that the epinephrine solution in the window of the auto-injector is clear. If the epinephrine solution is discolored (pinkish or brown color) or contains solid particles, speak with your healthcare professional immediately and replace your epinephrine auto-injector. You may want to bring extra supplies in case of an emergency. You may also want to research which pharmacies and hospitals are along your route.

Traveling Globally

Visiting a foreign country? Make your trip a success by following these simple tips.

  • Make sure you have necessary medications , including your EPIPEN Auto-Injectors or their authorized generic. Check expiration dates, and consider bringing extra supplies. If you run out while traveling, the products you need may not be available in foreign pharmacies.
  • Learn the names of your allergens in the languages of the countries you’ll visit . Be able to say and write them so you can alert others to your condition. You might want to consider allergy translation cards. (Selectwisely.com is one site that offers allergy translation cards for purchase.)
  • Research the area you’ll be staying in . Is the country allergy‑aware? Will allergen‑free food be available? Plan to ship or bring your own food if necessary.
  • Tell your traveling companions about your severe allergy or if you have any children with severe allergies. Make sure they know where you keep your EPIPEN and/or EPIPEN JR Auto-Injectors (or their authorized generics) and how to use one in case you’re unable to administer the medicine yourself.
  • Consider wearing a medical ID bracelet , which can alert healthcare professionals to your condition even if you’re unable to speak.
  • Locate the closest hospital and know how to get there. Determine the local phone number for emergency services.

Wherever you go, be prepared.

Use common sense, be careful to avoid your allergens, have an anaphylaxis action plan in place…and have a safe trip!

INDICATIONS (the following information applies to both Epipen and its Authorized Generic)

EPIPEN ® and EPIPEN JR ® Auto-Injectors are used to treat life-threatening, allergic emergencies in people who are at risk for or have a history of serious allergic emergencies. EPIPEN and EPIPEN JR are for immediate administration by you or your caregiver. They do not take the place of emergency medical care. You should get emergency help right away after using your EPIPEN of EPIPEN JR.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION (the following information applies to both EPIPEN and its Authorized Generic)

EPIPEN ® (epinephrine injection, USP) 0.3 mg and EPIPEN JR ® (epinephrine injection, USP) 0.15 mg Auto-Injectors are used to treat allergic emergencies (anaphylaxis). Anaphylaxis can be life threatening and happen within minutes. If untreated, anaphylaxis can cause death. This allergic emergency can be caused by stinging and biting insects, allergy injections, foods, medicines, exercise, or unknown causes.

Always carry 2 EPIPEN or 2 EPIPEN JR Auto-Injectors with you because sometimes a single dose of epinephrine may not be enough to treat a serious allergic reaction before seeking medical care.

When you have an allergic emergency (anaphylaxis), use EPIPEN or EPIPEN JR auto-injectors right away. Get emergency medical help right away even if you have used the EPIPEN or EPIPEN JR auto-injector. You can use a second EPIPEN or EPIPEN JR auto-injector if symptoms continue or if the first auto-injector is activated. If you need more than 2 doses for an allergic emergency, they must be given by a healthcare provider.

Before you use EPIPEN or EPIPEN JR auto-injectors, tell your healthcare provider about all your medical conditions if you have heart problems with high blood pressure, diabetes, thyroid problems, asthma, a history of depression, Parkinson’s disease, are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed.

Tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins and herbal supplements. Tell your healthcare provider about all of your known allergies. If you have certain medical conditions, or take certain medicines, your condition may get worse, or you may have longer lasting side effects when you use your EPIPEN or EPIPEN JR auto-injector.

Especially tell your healthcare provider if you take certain asthma medicines. EPIPEN and EPIPEN JR and other medicines may affect the way other medicines work. Other medicines my affect how EPIPEN and EPIPEN JR auto-injector works.

EPIPEN or EPIPEN JR auto-injector should be injected into the middle of your outer thigh (upper leg), through clothing if necessary. Do not inject into your veins, buttocks, fingers, toes, hands or feet. It is very important that you hold the EPIPEN or EPIPEN JR auto-injector down firmly on the middle of the outer thigh (upper leg) for at least 3 full seconds. If you do not hold it in place long enough, the EPIPEN or EPIPEN JR auto-injector might not have time to deliver the correct dose of medicine. If you accidentally inject EPIPEN or EPIPEN JR auto-injectors into any place other than the middle of your outer thigh, go to the nearest emergency room right away. If you inject a young child, hold their leg firmly in place before and during the 3 second injection to prevent injuries.

Rarely, patients who have used EPIPEN or EPIPEN JR auto-injectors may get infections at the injection site within a few days. Some of these infections can be serious. Call your healthcare professional right away if you have any of the following at an injection site: redness that does not go away, swelling, tenderness, or the area feels warm to the touch.

Common side effects include fast, irregular or “pounding” heartbeat, sweating, nausea or vomiting, breathing problems, paleness, dizziness, weakness, shakiness, headache, feelings of over excitement, nervousness or anxiety. These side effects may go away with rest. Tell your healthcare professional if you have any side effect that bothers you or that does not go away.

Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA- 1088.

5 Best Epipen Cases (Choose A Stylish Pouch and Tag)

(I may earn a small commission on the products linked to in this post.)

If you’ve been diagnosed with a serious food allergy (or environmental allergy), you’ve probably been advised to “always carry your epi-pen”.  Rather than throwing the epipen in your purse or backpack, why not use a stylish epipen holder in the form of a bag, pouch, case, or carrier?

And don’t forget to attach a tag as well!

Although few people ever use an epipen, there is not doubt they are a life-saving piece of equipment and an essential part of protection.  It’s safe to say that no one intentionally puts themselves in harm’s way, however, accidents do happen and we should be ready.

Preparedness is even more important for children who tend to forget or take the necessary precautions to avoid an allergic reaction. Because it’s a small device an epipen bag helps keep it safe and secure. Plus it’s much easier to locate when needed.

The 5 Best Epi-pen Holders To Keep Your Device Secure

Rescue shot case for epipens.

The Rescue shot holder is the smallest and most practical case on the list. If you’re looking for a minimalis type holder this is it. Don’t worry, it won’t get lost because it comes in a various colors that you can choose from ( check out the case on Amazon ).

epipen travel bag

I like the epipen carrier because it’s simple and small. It’s also versatile, meaning it can attach to a belt or be kept in a purse or backpack.

Customers appear to like it as well. It has solid reviews and starts at a reasonable price.

AllerMates Epipen Travel Bag

This bag is another good option for people on the go. In fact, it’s perfect for families who need extra space for a few epipens.

Allermates is a popular allergy brand that focuses on prevention and safety. They offer more than just cases. They also have cool allergy bracelets , perfect for kids.

epipen travel bag

The best thing about this epipen bag is that it includes a detachable piece that is much smaller. You end up getting two bags in one.  Both bags can fit inside of a backpack but the smaller pouch (7.5 inches x 3.25) is perfect for a purse or handbag and it’s the correct size to hold your injectable epi-pen.

The cost is slightly more than others on this list, however, it also includes more options for an individual or family. If you have serious allergies and travel often, this is the best option for all your allergy items.

SPIbelt – An Epipen Belt For Adults

I like this belt for several reasons. The main reason is that it’s “hands-free”.  If you have an epipen pouch, you’ll need a place to carry it. This isn’t the case with the epipen belt.

epipen travel bag

It was created primarily for diabetic patients, however, it happens to be a perfect side for an epipen as well ( view details on Amazon ).

If you’re going to a theme park, or sight-seeing, this belt allows you to walk without having to hold onto a pouch or purse.

The pocket expands to 6 inches x 3 inches x 2 inches, which is the same length as most epipens. If you do choose the SPIbelt, make sure to first measure your epipen. Because the belt is discrete, it will be a tight fit, even for one pen.

MedBuddy Epipen Carrier

MedBuddy makes a variety of carrier options for people who need to be with their medicine. This option comes in a basic black color.

Because it’s small but secure, it’s best for the person who stores their epipen in a bag or purse.

epipen travel bag

  • Allergy and asthma meds
  • Nasal spray

Fitting all those items in this carrier would be a challenge, but it can definitely fit 2 epipens and additional antihistamine pills and an inhaler ( view more on Amazon ).

The information card adds an extra personalized touch to the case.  Overall, this is a simple, yet effective epipen bag that will hold all your on-the-go allergy needs. It comes at a reasonable price and worth it for this quality case!

PracMedic Epipen Holder For Girls

We had to include an epipen case for girls. Kids are often the reason for an epipen case, so this is an option that will make a girl smile.

epipen travel bag

Besides 2 epipens, this holder has extra space for an inhaler and other allergy medications. The nylon cover is strong enough to withstand wear and tear from kids and the zipper keeps everything inside the pouch.

Customers agree that it’s a quality epipen pouch for kids and “perfect for AuviQ and Benadryl”. AuviQ doesn’t fit in all epipen cases but this one does!

Places You’ll Want To Have An Epipen Carrier

As mentioned earlier, an epipen is a requirement for people with moderate-to-severe allergic reactions. These individuals will need to take an epipen with you everywhere they go.

For most children, this is an easy task. They can keep one at home and another in their school backpack. For adults it might mean keeping an injector in a purse or briefcase.

Outside of the normal places, where else might you need an epipen holder? Below are a few places to consider.

  • Sight-seeing
  • Sporting events
  • Family gatherings and parties

An epipen bag is an inexpensive and convenient item to have. Not only will you be able to keep your epipen safe, but it will make it easier to find for those who care for you (teacher or medical professional).

If needed, you can also attach an epipen tag, which further provides identification.  An epipen tag, like this one on Amazon, is easy to clip onto a belt or hook and it gives first responders an idea as to its contents.

Whether you’re looking for an epipen tag, bag, pouch, or carrier, the variety we’v shared is a good start to your search. There are many colors and options available.

You can have a larger bag that accommodates all of your essential allergy items, or you can choose from the first option on the list which is lightweight and compact. My favorite is the belt that allows you to carry an epipen hands free without others knowing.

Kids will likely appreciate one of the cases that are colorful.

You never know when you’ll need an epipen so it’s best to be prepared. Use this list to get started and we’re sure you’ll discover an item you like!

Can you bring an EpiPen on a plane?

Medically reviewed by Carmen Pope, BPharm . Last updated on April 26, 2023.

epipen travel bag

Official answer

You can bring your EpiPen onto a plane – they are a common medical device and they should not cause any fuss when you are going through airport security. You can carry them in your handbag, laptop bag, or other carry-on luggage. It is a very good idea to take your EpiPen with you on the plane because the small confines of an aircraft increase your odds of being exposed to a trigger allergen while you are flying and having an anaphylactic reaction.

Different airlines have different rules regarding how to present them for travel. Under TSA rules, they do not have to be in a plastic bag because they do not come under the TSA’s 3-1-1 liquids rule (which means liquids cannot be more than 3.4 ounces [100mL] and they have to fit into one, 1-quart bag).

Are there any additional steps that need to be taken when traveling with an EpiPen outside of the United States?

Even though you are not required to put your EpiPen into a plastic bag under the TSA rule, other airlines or airport security, such as in the United Kingdom, do require you to put it in a plastic bag, so if you are traveling outside of the U.S., place your EpiPen in a separate small plastic bag, tell the security officer that you are carrying an EpiPen, and present it for checking at security, alongside your other carry-on luggage.

Keep the EpiPen in its original box with the pharmacy label attached. For international travel carry a copy of the prescription for EpiPen or a note from your doctor stating that you have allergies. Although this is not a requirement for U.S. travel, it may be a helpful piece of information to have and to show people if you do suffer an anaphylactic reaction on the plane.

Most security officers have seen an EpiPen before and are familiar with them, but some may not be, especially in more remote countries, so make sure they don’t accidentally prick their thumb while they are inspecting it. Although the needle is hidden, pressing on the needle cover can set off the device and expose the needle. Generally, an EpiPen needle is not considered a dangerous object because it is very thin and quite short, and would not be able to be used as a weapon against airline staff or other passengers. The quantity of liquid contained in an EpiPen is also very small (about 2mL – of which only 0.3mL gets injected, the rest remains in the pen), and would not be outside the limits of any airline's restrictions on liquid volume.

Are there any restrictions on the number of EpiPens that can be brought on a plane?

There are no restrictions on the number of EpiPens that can be brought onto a plane, but make sure they all have a prescription label, or a copy of the prescription, as well as a note from your doctor. It is common for people to carry one in their handbag or laptop bag, and one in their carry-on luggage. If you have more than 2, consider putting the rest in your checked in luggage.

Should EpiPens be kept in a specific location while on the plane for easy access in case of an emergency?

Keep your EpiPen with you on the plane, in an easy to reach location, either in your handbag, laptop bag, or other carry-on luggage. You need to be able to get to it quickly in an emergency.

Can EpiPens go through X-ray?

Yes, EpiPens can be screened through the x-ray machines because there is no evidence that this harms the medication in anyway.

Firstly, it’s important to know that EpiPens are allowed in both carry-on bags and checked baggage. However, it is highly recommended to keep your EpiPen in your carry-on for easy accessibility during your flight. When going through security, it’s not necessary to remove your EpiPen from your bag or show it to the security personnel. The TSA allows medications , including EpiPens, to remain in your carry-on as long as they are properly labeled.

epipen travel bag

If you’re carrying more than one EpiPen, it’s important to note that there are no restrictions on the number of EpiPens you can bring on a plane. However, it’s a good idea to bring a doctor’s note or prescription with you to validate the need for multiple devices. This can help avoid any potential misunderstandings or complications at the security checkpoint.

In terms of EpiPen quality, flying does not impact the effectiveness of the medication. EpiPens are designed to withstand changes in air pressure and temperature fluctuations. It’s still important to store your EpiPen in a cool and dry place to maintain its efficacy, but there’s no need to worry about its functionality being affected by air travel.

When traveling, it’s always a good idea to have a backup plan in case of emergencies. If you’re flying within the United States, make sure to research the locations of medical facilities and pharmacies near your destination. This way, you’ll be prepared in the event that you need a replacement EpiPen or any other medical assistance.

Understanding the rules and regulations for flying with an EpiPen in the United States is crucial to ensuring a safe and stress-free travel experience. By familiarizing yourself with the TSA guidelines, properly labeling your medication, and keeping your EpiPen in your carry-on, you can have peace of mind knowing that you’re prepared for any allergic reactions or medical emergencies that may arise during your trip.

Rules For Flights In Other Countries

When traveling to other countries, it’s important to familiarize yourself with their specific rules and regulations regarding EpiPens. While many countries have similar guidelines to the United States, there may be some variations that you need to be aware of to ensure a smooth travel experience.

First and foremost, it’s crucial to research the regulations of the country you are traveling to. Some countries may have restrictions on certain medications or medical devices, including EpiPens. Check with the embassy or consulate of your destination country to get the most up-to-date information. It’s also a good idea to have a copy of your prescription or a letter from your doctor explaining your need for an EpiPen.

In some cases, you may need to obtain a special permit or authorization to bring your EpiPen into the country. This can involve filling out paperwork, providing medical documentation, or even obtaining a translation of your prescription. It’s important to start this process well in advance of your trip to avoid any last-minute complications.

Another consideration when traveling internationally is the availability of EpiPens in the country you are visiting. It’s always a good idea to carry extra EpiPens with you, as it may be difficult to find the exact brand or dosage you need while abroad. Additionally, it’s important to research the local emergency services and medical facilities in case you need a replacement EpiPen or medical assistance during your trip.

Navigating the rules for flying with an EpiPen in other countries can be a bit more complex than in the United States. By doing your research, obtaining the necessary permits or authorizations, and being prepared with extra EpiPens, you can ensure a stress-free and safe travel experience. Remember, it’s always better to be over-prepared when it comes to your health and safety while traveling abroad.

Bringing EpiPens In Your Carry-On

When traveling with an EpiPen, it’s essential to keep it easily accessible in your carry-on bag. This ensures that you have immediate access to it in case of an emergency during your flight. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) allows EpiPens to be brought on board in carry-on bags , so there’s no need to worry about checking it in.

To pack your EpiPen in your carry-on, simply place it in a clear plastic bag along with your other medications. This makes it easier for the security personnel to inspect it, if necessary. Remember to keep the prescription label intact on your EpiPen packaging as well. When going through security, you may wonder if you need to remove your EpiPen from your bag and show it separately. Fortunately, the TSA does not require you to do so. Your EpiPen can remain in your bag, and there’s no need to show it to the security personnel unless asked.

To ensure a smooth process at security, it’s a good idea to have a doctor’s note or prescription with you. This validates the need for carrying an EpiPen and can help avoid any potential misunderstandings or complications. Once you’re on the plane, keep your EpiPen within reach. It’s best to keep it in the seat pocket in front of you or in a small bag that you can keep with you throughout the flight. This way, you can quickly access it if needed, without having to rummage through your larger carry-on bag.

Remember, the rules for carrying EpiPens in your carry-on may vary depending on the country you are traveling to. It’s important to research and understand the specific regulations of your destination to ensure a hassle-free travel experience.

Bringing EpiPens In Checked Baggage

When it comes to flying with an EpiPen, it’s important to know the rules and regulations for both your carry-on and checked baggage. While it is generally recommended to keep your EpiPen in your carry-on for easy accessibility during your flight, there may be situations where you need to pack it in your checked baggage. So, what do you need to know about bringing EpiPens in checked baggage?

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) allows EpiPens to be packed in both carry-on and checked baggage. However, it’s important to keep in mind that checked baggage is often subjected to more handling and potential rough treatment. This can potentially damage your EpiPen or affect its effectiveness.

To protect your EpiPen in checked baggage, there are a few steps you can take. First, make sure your EpiPen is securely packed in a sturdy container or case. This will help protect it from any external pressures or impacts during transportation. Additionally, it’s a good idea to wrap your EpiPen in a soft cloth or cushioning material to provide an extra layer of protection.

When packing your EpiPen in checked baggage , it’s important to remember that it will not be easily accessible during your flight. If you anticipate needing your EpiPen during the flight, it’s best to keep it in your carry-on bag. However, if you have multiple EpiPens and want to have a backup in case your carry-on gets lost or damaged, it can be a good idea to pack one in your checked baggage as well.

Do I Have To Take Out EpiPen At Security?

Navigating through airport security can be a stressful experience, especially when you’re traveling with an EpiPen. But do you really have to take out your EpiPen at security? The answer is no, you do not have to remove your EpiPen from your bag and show it separately. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) guidelines state that medications, including EpiPens, can remain in your carry-on bag as long as they are properly labeled. This means that you can keep your EpiPen securely packed in your bag and go through security without any extra hassle.

However, it’s important to note that security procedures can vary depending on the airport and the security personnel. In some cases, the security officers may ask you to remove your EpiPen from your bag for inspection. It’s always a good idea to be prepared for this possibility by having your doctor’s note or prescription with you. This can help validate the need for carrying an EpiPen and avoid any potential misunderstandings or complications.

Remember, the main goal of airport security is to ensure the safety of all passengers. By following the TSA guidelines, properly labeling your medication, and being prepared with documentation if necessary, you can have a smooth and stress-free experience going through security with your EpiPen.

Can My EpiPen Be Confiscated?

Traveling with an EpiPen can be a nerve-wracking experience, and one common concern is whether or not your EpiPen can be confiscated at airport security. Let me put your mind at ease. In most cases, the answer is no, your EpiPen cannot be confiscated. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) recognizes the importance of these life-saving devices and has specific guidelines in place to ensure that individuals who need them can travel safely.

That being said, there are some important factors to consider to avoid any potential issues. First and foremost, make sure your EpiPen is properly labeled with your name and the prescription information. This helps security personnel identify it as a medical device and ensures that it won’t be mistaken for something else.

In some cases, security officers may want to inspect your EpiPen more closely. They might ask you to remove it from your bag for a closer look. If this happens, remain calm and cooperative. You can show them the label on your EpiPen packaging, and if you have a doctor’s note or prescription, present that as well. These documents can help validate the need for carrying an EpiPen and demonstrate that it is not a prohibited item.

It’s worth mentioning that security procedures can vary depending on the airport and the security personnel. While most airports adhere to the TSA guidelines, there may be instances where an individual security officer is unaware of the specific rules for EpiPens. In these cases, politely ask to speak to a supervisor or show them the TSA guidelines on their official website. Remember, knowledge is power, and being well-informed can help you navigate these situations confidently.

Overall, as long as you follow the TSA guidelines and have your EpiPen properly labeled, the chances of it being confiscated are extremely low. So, rest assured and travel with confidence knowing that your life-saving device will be by your side throughout your journey.

How Many EpiPens Can I Bring On A Plane?

Traveling with an EpiPen is crucial for individuals with severe allergies or medical conditions. But how many EpiPens can you bring on a plane? The good news is that there are no restrictions on the number of EpiPens you can bring on a plane. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) recognizes the importance of these life-saving devices and allows individuals to bring as many as they need.

However, it’s important to keep in mind that each country may have its own regulations regarding the quantity of medication you can bring. While the TSA guidelines allow for multiple EpiPens, it’s always a good idea to check the specific rules of your destination country before traveling. Some countries may require you to obtain a special permit or authorization if you’re carrying more than a certain number of EpiPens.

In addition to familiarizing yourself with the rules of your destination country, it’s a good idea to bring a doctor’s note or prescription with you. This can help validate the need for multiple EpiPens and avoid any potential complications at security checkpoints. Having this documentation on hand can provide peace of mind and ensure a smoother travel experience.

When it comes to the number of EpiPens you can bring on a plane, the key is to be prepared and follow the guidelines of both the TSA and your destination country. By doing so, you can have peace of mind knowing that you have the necessary life-saving devices with you during your journey.

Does Flying Affect EpiPen Quality?

One common concern for individuals traveling with an EpiPen is whether flying can affect the quality and effectiveness of the medication. Rest assured, flying does not impact the quality of your EpiPen. EpiPens are specifically designed to withstand changes in air pressure and temperature fluctuations that occur during air travel.

The main components of an EpiPen, including the epinephrine solution, needle, and auto-injector mechanism, are engineered to maintain their effectiveness even in varying conditions. The manufacturers of EpiPens have conducted extensive testing to ensure that the medication remains stable and potent throughout its shelf life, regardless of whether it has been exposed to air travel.

However, it’s important to note that proper storage is still crucial to maintaining the efficacy of your EpiPen. It is recommended to store your EpiPen in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. This will help ensure that the medication remains in optimal condition.

While flying itself does not affect the quality of your EpiPen, it’s always a good idea to check the expiration date of your device before traveling. If your EpiPen is expired, make sure to replace it with a fresh one to ensure its effectiveness in case of an emergency.

In summary, you can travel with confidence knowing that flying does not affect the quality of your EpiPen. Just remember to store it properly and check its expiration date before your trip. With a well-maintained and up-to-date EpiPen, you can have peace of mind knowing that you’re prepared for any allergic reactions or medical emergencies that may arise during your journey.

How To Protect EpiPens When Traveling?

Traveling with an EpiPen is essential for individuals with severe allergies or medical conditions, but it’s equally important to protect your EpiPen during your journey. Here are some tips to ensure the safety and effectiveness of your life-saving device while traveling. First and foremost, invest in a sturdy and protective case for your EpiPen. This will help prevent any accidental damage during transportation. Look for cases specifically designed for EpiPens that provide a secure and cushioned compartment to keep your device safe.

Next, consider using a temperature-regulated storage case for your EpiPen. Extreme temperatures, whether hot or cold, can affect the efficacy of the medication. These storage cases are designed to keep your EpiPen within a safe temperature range, ensuring its potency.

Additionally, keep your EpiPen away from direct sunlight and excessive moisture. These environmental factors can also impact the quality of the medication. It’s best to store your EpiPen in a cool and dry place, such as a carry-on bag or a backpack pocket. When packing your EpiPen, be mindful of its placement within your bag. Avoid placing heavy objects on top of it, and make sure it is securely fastened or zipped in a separate compartment to prevent any accidental activation.

Lastly, always check the expiration date of your EpiPen before your trip. An expired EpiPen may not be as effective in an emergency situation. If your EpiPen is nearing its expiration or has already expired, make sure to replace it with a fresh one. By following these simple tips, you can ensure that your EpiPen remains in optimal condition throughout your travels. Remember, the safety and effectiveness of your EpiPen are crucial for your well-being, so it’s important to protect it as best as you can. Safe travels!

What Is An EpiPen Exactly?

An EpiPen is a life-saving device that can make a crucial difference in an emergency situation. But what exactly is an EpiPen? An EpiPen, also known as an epinephrine auto-injector, is a small and portable device that contains a single dose of epinephrine, a hormone that can counteract severe allergic reactions. The device is designed to be user-friendly, even for individuals who are not healthcare professionals.

The EpiPen consists of a plastic tube that contains a spring-loaded needle. When the device is activated, the needle is automatically injected into the thigh, delivering a dose of epinephrine to the body. This can help to reverse the symptoms of anaphylaxis, a severe and potentially life-threatening allergic reaction.

EpiPens are typically prescribed to individuals who have a known risk of anaphylaxis due to severe allergies to foods, insect bites, medications, or other triggers. It’s important to note that EpiPens are not a cure for allergies, but rather a temporary measure to buy time until emergency medical help can be obtained.

EpiPens are safe and easy to use, making them a vital tool for individuals with severe allergies or medical conditions. By carrying an EpiPen, individuals can be prepared to respond to allergic reactions quickly and effectively, potentially saving their own life or the life of someone else in need. In summary, an EpiPen is a portable and user-friendly device that contains a dose of epinephrine to counteract severe allergic reactions. It is an essential tool for individuals with severe allergies and can make a life-saving difference in emergency situations.

Alternatives To EpiPen On A Plane

While EpiPens are the go-to option for individuals with severe allergies, it’s always a good idea to be prepared with alternative options when traveling on a plane. While there isn’t a perfect replacement for an EpiPen, there are a few alternatives that can be used in an emergency situation. One such option is a generic epinephrine auto-injector. These devices work similarly to EpiPens and contain a single dose of epinephrine. Another option is a pre-filled syringe containing epinephrine. These syringes can be easily administered in the event of an allergic reaction. However, it’s important to note that these alternatives may not be as user-friendly or readily available as EpiPens. It’s always best to consult with your healthcare provider and carry any necessary documentation or prescriptions when considering alternatives to EpiPens. Remember, while these alternatives can provide some level of protection, nothing can fully replace the reliability and ease of use of an EpiPen. It’s crucial to have an EpiPen with you whenever possible, especially when traveling on a plane.

What If I Forget My EpiPen?

We all know that traveling can be hectic, and sometimes things slip our minds. But what if you forget your EpiPen? While it’s not an ideal situation, there are still steps you can take to ensure your safety. First and foremost, stay calm. Panicking will only make the situation worse. If you realize you forgot your EpiPen while you’re still at home, try to retrieve it if possible. If it’s too late for that, don’t hesitate to reach out for help. Notify a flight attendant or airport staff about your situation and explain that you have severe allergies. They may be able to provide you with an emergency EpiPen or direct you to medical assistance. Remember, it’s always better to be proactive and seek help rather than putting your health at risk. If you find yourself without an EpiPen while traveling, take the necessary precautions to avoid potential triggers and be mindful of any allergic reactions. And most importantly, once you’re back home, make it a priority to ensure you have your EpiPen with you for future trips.

Can You Use Your EpiPen On A Plane?

Absolutely! You can use your EpiPen on a plane if you experience a severe allergic reaction. In fact, it’s crucial to have your EpiPen easily accessible during your flight. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) allows EpiPens in both carry-on and checked baggage, so you don’t have to worry about leaving it behind.

If you find yourself in an emergency situation where you need to use your EpiPen, simply follow these steps. First, remove the blue safety cap from the top of the EpiPen. Next, firmly push the orange end of the device against the outer thigh until you hear a click. Hold it in place for a few seconds to ensure the medication is fully delivered.

It’s important to note that after using your EpiPen, you should seek medical attention immediately. Even though the EpiPen can provide temporary relief, it’s essential to get proper medical care to address the underlying allergic reaction. Remember, the safety and well-being of yourself and those around you should always be your top priority. By being prepared with your EpiPen and knowing how to use it correctly, you can have peace of mind while traveling and be ready to respond quickly in case of an emergency.

The Bottom Line

In conclusion, traveling with an EpiPen can be a bit intimidating, but with the right knowledge and preparation, you can navigate through airport security with ease. Familiarize yourself with the TSA rules for carrying EpiPens, pack them properly in your carry-on, and be prepared with any necessary documentation. Remember to always prioritize your health and safety when traveling. By following these guidelines, you can have a stress-free and safe travel experience, knowing that you are prepared for any allergic reactions or medical emergencies that may arise.

Don't let severe allergies stop you from travelling - just do some extra planning

There is no reason why you and your family can't enjoy holidays or travel. It just means a little bit of extra planning and maybe adding a few items to your travel checklist.

Know your triggers

Avoidance of triggers is always the most effective way of managing allergies, so if you are planning on travelling it’s important to know exactly what your triggers are, and how to communicate them. 1

Of course, there may be hidden triggers, so you still need to be prepared.

Research your destination, particularly if you are travelling overseas. Learn the local words for all of your triggers. Translation apps and websites can help you with that. Write down the details of your allergies on a card that can be shown to restaurant or other staff in English and their language. Or look at acquiring a set of multi-language cards from providers such as Allergy & Anaphylaxis Australia 2 which are available from: https://allergyfacts.org.au/resources/aaa-translated-chef-card-template

The multi-language cards mentioned in this website are general recommendations only, and are not endorsed by Viatris or intended to be applicable to all patients.

Obtain, and make copies of, a letter from your doctor detailing your allergy and the medication required to manage it. If you are travelling to countries where English is not the primary language spoken you may wish to carry a card with your emergency procedure translated into the local language. 2 And take a printed copy of the ASCIA Action Plan for Anaphylaxis to share with hotel or resort staff.

If you are flying 2

Before you book flights, check out the airline’s policy on allergy prevention and treatment. For example, does the airline serve peanuts or other potential triggers as snacks? Are you able to board with EpiPen ® Auto-Injector? When you finally book, alert the airline to any allergies and special meal requests. If the airline can’t guarantee allergy free foods, check that you can take your own food on board.

Airlines, customs and security policies vary. To help minimise issues with carrying EpiPen ® Auto-Injector, it is recommended that all medication is carried in original packaging and that you take a letter from your doctor.

It is highly recommended that you take out medical travel insurance for your trip – healthcare can be very expensive in some countries.

You should notify airline attendants of your allergies when you board the plane and indicate the location of your EpiPen ® Auto-Injector and Action Plan.

Wipe down seatback trays before placing food items on them, to avoid cross contamination from previous passengers.

You should carry EpiPen ® Auto-Injector in your hand luggage. EpiPen ® Auto-Injector should not be packed into checked-in luggage. Make sure EpiPen ® Auto-Injector is within easy reach. It is better to keep it in a bag under the seat in front of you or in the seat pocket rather than in the overhead locker.

If travelling with children with allergies, ensure flight attendants are aware of the situation in case you fall asleep or aren’t in a position to monitor what the child eats or drinks.

Travelling with a medical device

Check with your doctor before flying to make sure it is safe for you to go through the metal detector at the security checkpoint. Always carry documents that support your medical condition.

The limit of two carry-on bags does not apply to medical supplies, equipment and mobility aids. Make advance arrangements with your air carrier if you need to transport a battery-powered wheelchair or mobility aid or if you require someone to assist you through the pre-boarding screening checkpoint.

When you go through airport security screening, use the Family-Special Needs security line. Screening officers at these lines are trained to offer additional assistance. Tell the screening officers if you have a medical implant, artificial limb or mobility aid that may trigger or be affected by the magnetic fields of the metal detection equipment.

Pacemaker or other medical device

If you have a pacemaker, insulin pump or other medical device, you should advise the screening officer when you enter the screening area. You should bring medical information with you to verify your medical condition.  If additional screening is required, a private search room is available. Further information is available from the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority .

Travelling with syringes

If your medication requires needles and syringes, carry an explanation from your health care provider or a medical certificate with you. In some countries, a traveller found with needles and syringes and without an adequate explanation could be in serious trouble. Needles and syringes may be difficult to purchase abroad, so take enough to last your entire trip. Needles and syringes are usually permitted  in carry-on luggage if needed for medical  reasons. Check airline regulations and the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority website before you travel to allow enough time to get the proper documentation as regulations differ from country to country.

Ostomy and pre-boarding screening

Before the screening process begins, inform the screening officer that you have an ostomy, and present him/her with a doctor's note. Although not mandatory, such supporting documentation will facilitate the screening process.  If additional screening is required, a private search room is available.

Ostomy supplies (pouches and flanges) can be packed in your carry-on bag and will be screened at the screening checkpoint. It is recommended to prepare your flanges by cutting them in advance for your trip, in case you need them on board the aircraft. Paste tubes are exempt from the liquid restrictions but must be presented to the screening officer separately from your carry-on baggage.
