Costa Cruises: beverage packages and drinks list and pricing (2024)

Updated: 3 days ago

Undoubtedly, one of the most recurring topics when choosing and customizing our cruise is taking into account what is included or not. This is a guide to know how the drinks and packages work on Costa Cruises:

Bar menu - list and pricing

As with any cruise, the menu consists of all types of beverages such as water, juices, coffees, alcoholic and non-alcoholic cocktails, and a wide variety of wines and beers. Something to keep in mind is that on Costa Cruises, no drinks are included . You only have access to machine water, juices, and coffee at the buffet and during breakfast (both buffet and à la carte). The ship does not have water fountains nor does it provide water in restaurants outside of breakfast. If you want a glass of bottled water, you will have to pay for it. Knowing this, here is the general drink menu in PDF format:

As you can see, the menu is divided into sections and the price of each beverage is listed next to it. However, there are several things to keep in mind. The first is that, as mentioned in the previous video, a 15% service charge is added to the price of the products . So, if you order a bottle of water for €3.50, you will be charged €4.03 after the service charge is added. This is important to note when calculating the cost of purchasing drinks separately.

You will also notice that some drinks (especially wine bottles) are marked with a discount for C|Club members . This applies to all members, meaning that you can access these types of discounts just by registering for the club for free before the cruise through the Costa website.

Finally, remember that the prices on the menu have increased in recent months. This is especially important for those who had calculated their beverage expenses on past cruises, as it will now be higher. For example, the price of water has increased from €2.90 to €3.40, coffee from €1.70 to €2.20, and a tropical cocktail from €8.20 to €9.30.

Specialty bars

The menu I provided is the general drink menu. What I mean by this is that there are bars on certain ships that have different menus. For example, pool bars usually do not have all the beverages available. Similarly, there are ships like the Costa Toscana that have exclusive bars such as the Campari Bar, Heineken Brewery, or Ferrari Bar. These spaces offer exclusive drinks from the location, some of which are also included in the beverage packages that we will discuss below. I don't have the updated menus right now, but I will try to share them as soon as I get them.

costa cruise my drinks package

Unlimited packages

Like almost all cruise lines, Costa offers a range of unlimited beverage packages that we can book before boarding or once on board. If you book with an all-inclusive rate, you will have the My Drinks package (formerly known as Più Gusto ). It is the most popular package and includes a wide variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages . These are the ones you will find on the menu marked with a yellow dot . Something to keep in mind is that this package includes drinks served in a glass, meaning you can order all the glasses of water you want but not all the bottles you want. In fact, it includes one 0.5l bottle per person per night . This means that if you take a 7-night cruise, you will have 7 small bottles to pick up at any bar, ideal for your room or excursions.

If you travel in a suite or decide to upgrade the package, you have My Drinks Plus (previously known as Intenditore ). This selection is much more extensive and includes specialty coffees, premium alcoholic brands, and unlimited water bottles . You will find all the drinks on the menu marked with a dark red dot .

You will also find the Brindiamo package (blue) , which includes a shorter selection of alcohol , mainly excluding cocktails with alcohol; and the My Soft Drinks package, which exclusively includes non-alcoholic beverages (red) .

The prices of the packages may vary, so check with Costa or your agency to get a price according to the number of nights you will be on board. As a reference, the My Drinks package on the Costa Toscana for 7 nights cost me around 250€.

If you feel like having something outside of your drink package once on board, you can request an upgrade or you can also choose to pay for drinks not included in the package. Additionally, in some bars, you can purchase certain drinks from the My Drinks Plus package by paying only a supplement if you already have the My Drinks package.

Drink packages cannot be shared and it is mandatory to contract them for all passengers in the same cabin. If you are traveling with children, they will have the non-alcoholic package.

Limited packages

You may be thinking that a package might be too much for you, and paying for drinks one by one may not seem like the best option. This is quite common among travelers who have a very specific selection of drinks or who consider paying, for example, 500€ for a couple in the same cabin excessive for what they are going to consume. In that case, there are packages known as limited.

These packages offer you a closed selection of drinks and a limited number of them , so you will pay a fixed price for, for example, 20 bottles of water, 40 coffees, or 30 beers. To learn more details, you can access myCosta.com with your booking number and see what each one offers. Something interesting is that these packages can be shared , and can be purchased by a single guest in the cabin. However, it will be charged to the card of the person who hires it.

I have contracted it on one occasion, where I took a package of 20 non-alcoholic cocktails for myself and my companion, which adapted to what we thought we would consume during the cruise.

All-inclusive?

Remember that traveling with the all-inclusive fare refers to daily tips and the drinks package. Nothing more. None of the drinks packages include ice cream, pizzas, or any other specialty restaurant. In fact, they inform that drinks packages cannot be used in specialty restaurants, although so far I have not found myself in a situation where I have been charged for water when eating in them.

So... is it worth it?

It's time to decide. Should I get a drinks package or not? The answer to this is completely personal and depends solely on each person's preferences. With this article, you can make an approximate calculation of what you will consume and compare the prices offered by the packages with those on the menu taking into account everything important. In my case, I have traveled with a package, without a package, and with a limited package as I mentioned before. On some occasions, the all-inclusive rate was better for me, and on others, I chose not to take it. I believe that if you have a package, you will end up taking advantage of it since you have no limits, just as if you travel without it, you will possibly restrain yourself more.

Extra: my favorites

Finally, I want to share my favorite selection of drink s if you are traveling with Costa, especially for those who are traveling for the first time and are all included in My Drinks :

Non-alcoholic cocktails: Pink Panther / Squok / Cosmopolitan

Alcoholic cocktails: Strawberry Daiquiri / Piña Colada / Margarita

Coffees: Macchiato / Cappuccino / Macchiato with Bailey's and ice

Specialty bar: Ferrari and its sparkling and strawberry or passion fruit cocktails

All-inclusive? How to understand the price of your cruise

Emma Cruises

Costa Cruises, Drinks Guide – Drinks Packages and Menus

When I took my first Costa cruise I didn’t purchase a drinks package. That was a big mistake for me.

When I took my second Costa cruise on Costa Smeralda, one of the first things I did when I got on board was buy a soft drinks package.

Costa Cruises even charges for water in the main restaurant. Tea, coffee and water are available in the buffet when it is open.

What Is Cruising With Costa Cruises Like?

Costa cruise ships are bright, loud – and offer great value for money. Every deck on Costa Smeralda was painted a different, bright colour.

Don’t expect to find tasteful, muted colours onboard!

There were lots of children and babies onboard our sailing, as Costa offers great value fares for children.

When you sail with Costa, you are considered to be a child until you are seventeen years old. For families, that can make a great deal of difference to the price you pay.

Costa certainly isn’t for everyone, but we had a great time onboard.

What Do Drinks Packages On Costa Cruises Cost?

Beverage packages with Costa Cruises start at around € 27 a day for a soft drinks package.

Beverage packages that include alcohol – or premium alcoholic drinks cost up to double that amount.

If you have a drinks package but want something else that isn’t included, you will be charged for that item individually.

Why Buy a Package?

I usually do not buy drinks packages when I cruise but when cruising with Costa I would recommend getting a drinks package for a number of reasons:

  • Costa does not include any drinks as standard, apart from water and hot drinks in the buffet
  • Buffet access is limited – There are parts of the day when it is shut and no free drinks will be available.
  • No kettles, tea or coffee-making facilities or fridges in the cabins

Costa Cruises Beverage Packages

All passengers in the cabin or on the same booking must have the same drinks package.

It isn’t possible for guests in the same cabin to have different drinks packages.

This is very common on a lot of cruise lines and it is done to deter passengers from ‘sharing’ the drinks package.

Find out more about why you can’t “share” drinks packages here:

You Can’t Share a Drinks Package on a Cruise – Here’s Why

Strictly speaking, all guests on the same booking should also have the same drinks package.

I’ve never seen this enforced though. If your party are cruising in a number of different cabins you probably will be okay for one cabin to have a drinks package and another one not.

Drinks packages include a 15% service charge

Costa has simplified their drinks packages in recent years, and prices are charged onboard in Euros.

Prices vary slightly depending on where you are booking from/exchange rates/special booking offers etc.

“My Soft Drinks” Package

This is the package I chose for my Costa Smeralda Cruise in January 2023.

I paid € 27 for my package, and it included a selection of sodas, fruit juices, mocktails, teas and coffees.

This package is quite expensive compared to simple soda packages on some other cruise lines- but as I knew that you couldn’t even have free tap water in the dining room, I thought it was necessary to buy one.

I had some onboard credit applied to my cabin when I booked, so I used this to buy the drinks package once onboard.

“My Drinks” Package

The My Drinks package includes:

  • Wine by the glass with meals
  • Draught beers
  • Hot chocolate
  • Tea and Coffee
  • Fruit juices,
  • One bottle of water per day

The cost of this drinks package can vary but is in the region of €37 a day

“My Drinks Plus” Package

My Drinks Plus includes all of the drinks listed above and:

  • A wider selection of beers
  • A wider selection of Sodas
  • More Cocktails
  • Named, branded spirits and liqueurs
  • Unlimited bottled water
  • Mini bar drinks.

The cost of this drinks package can vary but is in the region of €52 a day

Service Charges

Costa does have compulsory ‘gratuities’ which are added onto your onboard account each day of your cruise.

To learn more about this, and the other things that surprised me about my first Costa Cruise make sure you check out this post:

Do You Need To Buy A Drinks Package?

No, you can just pay for any drinks you want and they will be charged to your onboard account.

If you don’t drink much, this could be much cheaper.

There will be a 15% service charge added to the cost of individual drinks.

Also be aware that there will be limited access to the free drinks in the buffet, as it isn’t open all the time.

Costa Cruises Drinks Package Terms and Conditions

All drinks packages are non-transferrable and you cannot share these with any other guests.

This is typical of all cruise ship drinks packages.

When I was on board the Costa Luminosa I shared a dinner table with some ladies who had drinks packages and wanted to share it with me and my family.

We had to politely decline as we didn’t want to break the rules or put the waiter in an awkward situation!

The packages only include drinks by the glass – bottles of wine are not available on any of the packages.

Drinking Age

The drinking age on Costa Cruises is usually 18 – unless the ship is sailing in an area of the world where the drinking age is 21. (In the USA for example.)

Costa Cruises Drinks Prices

If you decide not to buy a drinks package you are able to buy drinks at prices which are similar to that of a bar or pub on land.

When you purchase drinks these will be charged to your cruise account which will be settled at the end of your cruise.

As far as cruise line drinks prices go, Costa’s drinks prices are quite reasonable.

A can of soda will cost around €3 and a bottle of beer around €5. A cocktail will set you back around €8 and a coffee will cost around €3.

Costa Luminosa Statue Women in Lobby

Water Package

When onboard Costa Luminosa, we managed to buy a water package – although I can’t find any evidence that this is a real thing on the Costa Cruises website!

Costa Cruises do not include water with meals, ‘tap water’ isn’t a thing. Your only option is to buy a 2-litre bottle of water if you want water with meals.

By buying the water package we were able to have a set amount of water for a set price. It was very strange not having your water glass constantly refilled by waiters like on most other cruise lines!

Buying a water package of 12-litre bottles of water is likely to cost you around €42.

Find out about the great value Costa Cruise I took on Costa Smeralda here. Costa certainly aren’t for everyone, but they bright, cheerful and great for families:

Before You Go

Many people worry that if you only speak English, you may struggle on an Italian cruise line like Costa. I have never found that to be the case. Find out more about that here:

The other big Italian cruise line you may have heard of is MSC . They also offer great value cruises, and I have sailed with them many times. Find out the difference between MSC and Costa Cruises here:

Msc and Costa Beverage Packages: how to choose?

The Costa Cruises and Msc Cruises beverage packages explained in detail, so you have all the information, advice and opinions about the best choice to make for you!

The success of an unforgettable holiday highly depends on the choice of the onboard “extras” you choose, just as the success of a good dish depends on the quality of the ingredients. For this reason, choosing the right beverage package is a serious matter, and it is always best to evaluate the different alternatives offered by cruise lines according to your needs. In my opinion, given the different experiences I have had on board cruise ships, it is always best to pre-purchase the drinks package before boarding, either at the travel agency or directly from the company’s website. By doing so you can save on the early booking and buy packages at advantageous rates.

Drinks

It is not necessary to select your desired beverage package at the time of booking, instead you can wait to do it even just a few days before departure without any problem, of course that is unless you already selected a rate that included a drinks package in the cost of the cabin. An example is the Costa Cruises ALL INCLUSIVE rate which already includes a series of extras in the price of the cabin, including the “Brindiamo” drinks package. But let’s take a closer look at the various alternatives proposed in more detail.

Costa Smeralda cafe

Costa Smeralda cafe

On board Costa Cruises ships you can find the package that is right for you, starting with the LUNCH AND DINNER package, where guests have drinks included during lunch and dinner, choosing from soft drinks, beer and wines served by the glass. Combined with the lunch and dinner package you can also buy the YOUTH LUNCH AND DINNER for families traveling with children, with a choice of non-alcoholic drinks and soft drinks that are suitable for children. This is the most fitting package for those who prefer to do a lot of excursions, spending less time on the ship, and who prefer to save a little money.

If, instead, you want to feel very pampered from morning to evening, the ideal package for you is the BRINDIAMO, already included for those who buy a cabin with the ALL INCLUSIVE formula. This experience will allow you to enjoy a wide selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, classic hot drinks as well as selected wines and spirits served both during meals, but also in all bars throughout the day… isn’t this a fantastic idea?

Pacchetti Bevande Crociera

Pacchetti Bevande Crociera

Costa has also created a formula for adding even more flavor to cruising life, so if during your holiday you can’t help but enjoy exquisite cocktails such as Mojito, Caipirinha, Daiquiri and many others, I suggest adding the PIU’ GUSTO/MORE TASTE package to your holiday, which is certainly the most appreciated by cocktail lovers.

And now we arrive to the most complete drink services available on Costa Cruises ships, the INTENDITORE package, which will ensure that you taste the best wines from the most prestigious wineries, all cocktails, including even molecular ones at a very advantageous price, as well as the minibar and 24-hour room service. Finally, there is a package dedicated to the youngest (from 4 to 17 years old) who are on holiday with mom and dad, the GIOVANI/YOUTH package in fact includes a wide choice of soft drinks, including juices, soft drinks, smoothies and delicious hot chocolate drinks to satisfy the tastes of young cruisers.

Forfaits boissons en croisière

Forfaits boissons en croisière

MSC Cruises passengers have the possibility to choose, right from the moment of booking, the type of “experience” they want to have during their holiday. In fact, in the Aurea and Yatch Club experiences the drinks in the various bars and restaurants are already included and unlimited… everything to ensure the perfect vacation! Obviously MSC also has something planned for those who like to drink, but without the alcohol!  And therefore the NON-ALCOHOLIC PACKAGE offers excellent refreshing drinks, energy drinks, fruit juices and non-alcoholic cocktails, mineral water and classic coffee drinks. By purchasing this package, these drinks are included throughout the day in all bars and restaurants. Similar to this is the MSC NON-ALCOHOLIC DRINKS CHILDREN package, for children ages 3 to 17.

One of the best-selling packages to date is the EASY package, which is very complete because it includes unlimited drinks in bars and restaurants with a wide choice of soft drinks, wines and Heineken beer by the glass, a selection of classic cocktails, mineral water and the most popular “classics” like espresso and cappuccino. But that’s not all, this last package can become PREMIUM for all guests who wish to add a wide choice of wines by the glass, draft and bottled beers, including all aperitifs, bitters, liqueurs and all cocktails up to a maximum of 10 euros per drink.

And finally, there is the PREMIUM PLUS package which adds, in addition to the items listed in the previous package, a special selection of spirits for connoisseurs, special cocktails such as Champagne and the minibar in-room service, as well as a discount of up to 30% on the best bottles of wine from top wineries.

costa cruise my drinks package

pacchetti-bevande-in-crociera-quale-scegliere

For both companies, something that is very important to know is that the same beverage package must be purchased for all guests staying in the same cabin or with the same booking number. In addition, the companies change what they offer frequently, with new items or price updates, so we invite you to check the availability of the packages and what they include either on the company websites, with your travel agent or directly on board, to ensure you view the latest versions and the actual drinks available.

On board, the choice of what to drink is infinite and you will have a plethora of delicious items to choose from no matter what you love! By choosing the perfect package for you, you will add the right panache to your cruise to enjoy in any onboard situation like a toast with new cruise friends, a special wine accompaniment during a gala dinner, or clinking glasses during an aperitif at sunset. In short, there will be plenty of opportunities, the choice is yours … cheers!

My Drinks Plus Beverage Package - What can I have ?

Cool Cruiser

scottieman333

This is my second questions, again my apologies if this has already been talked about

I have taken the "My Drinks Plus Beverage Package" on our Costa Toscana Cruise , I'm so looking forward to this.

After looking at some reviews and also a menu, how do I know what drinks I am allowed to chose that is on my drinks package ?

If my wife and I are looking at any wine to have with a meal, how do we know without asking, what is on our drinks package or if we have to "additional purchase".

This information on the "My Costa" is not that clear.

If someone can help, it would be greatly beneficial.

Thanks to any reply

Bar tenders are very good at letting you know if the item you are ordering is not included.   Just ask.

Thanks

With wine it is easy, wines by the glass are included, bottles are not. And in the bar list the included drinks are marked by coloured dots, each package has a colour of its own.

kremerlorraine

Here is the current La Cantina wine list. I'm not 100% sure that the most expensive wines by the glass are included, but the majority are (including Jaquart champagne). I also attach the bar list.

At MDR you will most likely have to ask them to bring the better wines. Last summer with My Drinks package (non plus version) the wine was usually "house" variant ie not bad but nothing special. If you wanted a specific wine by glass you had to ask for it. One evening the next table to us provided very good entertainment for us as they ordered a specific bottle of wine and then later on complained about the bill. The waiter told them multiple times "Wine by bottle is not included in the drinks package. But wine by glasses are..."

The difference between the drink packages are  easy to spot in via colored dots and bar tenders will ask multiple times that "This is not included in the package. Are you sure?"

Costa Cruises Alcohol Policy, Drink Packages

CruiseMapper logo

Costa Cruises alcohol policy is a real clear-cut - cruisers may NOT bring any alcoholic beverages on board at any time. Anyway, read the rest of our article about bringing alcohol onboard Costa ships and beverage packages - you may find something new and interesting about Costa lines' beverage policy rules.

This link lists Costa's current fleet .

Costa Cruises Alcohol Policy

Costa Cruises drinking age for any voyage leaving the United States is 21. The drinking age on any Costa ship leaving from a non-USA port is 18 years old. Passengers who are responsible for supervising the underage guests have to ensure they do not possess, purchase, or consume alcohol violate any other Costa Cruises shipboard regulations.

Costa Cruises alcohol policy, wine, drink prices, packages

Costa cruise beverage policy rules and allowance

Bringing liquor at embarkation onboard Costa Cruises ships is not allowed - when found, liquor is confiscated and then held by the line till the end of the voyage. According to the Costa website, no food or drinks may be brought aboard. However, some passengers report bringing wine and champagne with prior authorization - a corkage fee of $10 per bottle is applied for previously authorized champagne and wine.

Purchasing liquor on Costa cruise ships’ duty-free shops and in ports of call

The liquor purchased in Costa Cruises ports of call and the one purchased in ships' duty-free shops is taken and held till the end of the voyage.

A line with company safety and health standards for crew members and passengers, the bringing of any kind of food or drink onboard in the cabin or hand luggage, is strictly forbidden. Personal care products (suntan lotion, shampoo, etc.), products certified by a doctor, liquid medicines, and baby care products, are not subject to the above rule. Drinks or food, including the purchased during shore excursions and visits in call ports items, won't be admitted on board. Any eventually purchased local products will be held in custody by Costa ship officers and released at guests' disembarkation.

When pre-arranged with Carnival Corp. casino division, free drinks may be received in the casino. Free alcoholic beverages are usually offered at Costa farewell cocktail parties, though not all guests are invited to it.

Costa cruise beer list

  • Draught: These change, depending on the itinerary. Beck's, for instance, is usually available in the Caribbean, Carlsberg - in Europe.
  • Bottled: Beck's, Carlsberg, Corona, Franziskaner Weissbier, Heineken, Nastro Azzuro, Peroni. Other bottled beers are also available, depending on the sailing.

Specialty bars on Costa ships

Costa cognac and cigar onboard bars serve a unique selection of rums, cognacs, and whiskies.

Costa Cruises drink packages

The below prices are in Euro, and inclusive of tips (gratuity) and service charges. The new Costa NEO-collection packages are only available on the neoCollection ships (neoRiviera and neoRomantica).

Remember that all your bags will be x-rayed and any liquor is confiscated till your disembarkation. However, passengers often consider Costa Cruises alcohol policy to be very uneven. Their reports vary and some say they just hid alcohol in their checked luggage and it was not a problem, while others admit the security showed it on the x-ray and the secret bottles were so obvious, that the line kept them till the end of the voyage.

Costa Cruises drink prices

Next are listed bar menu prices on beverages served shipboard. Prices are in EUR.

The Points Guy

8 best drinks to order with a cruise ship beverage package (and 3 to avoid)

I f you're going to spend $60 to $140 per day for a cruise ship drink package , you will want to make sure you're getting the best value. Order the right drinks and you can definitely get your money's worth. Choose the wrong drinks, and you'll end up spending more money than necessary.

The most cost-effective option is to get a cruise line drink package free as a booking perk . If you can't do that, focus on these eight best drinks to order with a beverage package to get the most out of your alcohol budget. I'll also clue you into three drink types that will work against your plan to make that package worth the money.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Expensive cocktails

If you prepay a flat price for alcohol, you can order pricey specialty cocktails without worrying about paying $15 to $20 a pop. Hands down, the best drink you can order from a value standpoint is the most expensive cocktail that falls within your plan's limit.

For example, Carnival Cruise Line includes beverages that cost $20 or less in its Cheers Beverage Program. The limit is $15 with Norwegian Cruise Line 's Unlimited Open Bar Beverage Package and $14 with Royal Caribbean 's Deluxe Beverage Package. Prioritize drinks that cost close to the limit. If you go over, most onboard bars will charge the difference, so you might want to try that expensive cocktail for just a few bucks.

Name-brand liquor

Order a gin and tonic, and the bartender is likely to pour you the cheapest house brand of gin he's got on hand. Get the most from your beverage package by asking for your tonic with Tanqueray or Bombay Sapphire.

The same rule of thumb applies to any liquor. Ask for your booze by name to get the nicer, more expensive drink and the best value from your beverage package. Just make sure the brand you're requesting is included in your package — otherwise you'll be charged extra. (Note that if your cruise line offers multiple tiers of drink packages, the top-shelf liquors might only be included in the priciest option.)

Related: Are cruise line drink packages worth the price? What to know before you buy

Weirdest drink on the menu

I like to try new drinks, but at $10 to $15 a cocktail, it can be an expensive experiment. With a drink package, however, experimentation is a risk-free proposition — especially on lines that have no limit on the number of alcoholic drinks you can purchase in a 24-hour period.

Try that fruit-infused vodka, the crazy-colored shot or the spiked cappuccino. There's no extra cost if you don't like it, and you only have to wait a few minutes before you can order a replacement.

The drink doesn't have to be eye-raising to be experimental. Use your beverage package to sample new wines by the glass or a cocktail you've never tried. You might discover your new favorite drink.

Related: The very best cruise ship bars at sea

Specialty coffee

Cruisers have trouble leaving their Starbucks addiction behind them and flock to the extra-charge coffee cafes onboard. With a beverage package, you can indulge your caffeine addiction with the good stuff at no extra charge.

Make your morning latte a vacation habit, or grab a chai tea on a rainy sea day or an iced coffee on a hot one. Nonalcoholic drinks do not count toward any drink limits, so the more you sip, the more value you get from your drink package.

Bottled water

Many cruisers don't like the taste of the ship's tap water. If you fall into that category, bottled water is another great beverage package buy, even if it's not the most earth-friendly option.

Grab a sealed bottle from the poolside bar to bring back to your deck chair so you can stay hydrated while you sunbathe. Collect bottles from the onboard bars to stash in your cabin so you can drink them after a shipboard pub crawl or throw them in your day pack when you head off the ship.

Prefer sparkling water with dinner? You can order it with no second thoughts when you have a beverage package.

Related: How to avoid getting sick on a cruise

Embarkation day drinks

Do you feel a little awkward making a beeline for the bar as soon as you step inside a cruise ship on embarkation day? You definitely should not feel this way if you've purchased a beverage package. The packages are priced by the length of your cruise, and embarkation day counts.

Grab a celebratory bubbly to mark the start of your cruise. Start your vacation with a glass of wine to unwind. It's five o'clock somewhere, and skipping out on embarkation day drinks means you're paying for a full day of beverage service you are not using. You might as well change that up and get more bang for your buck.

Related: 27 cruise ship embarkation day do's and don'ts

Frozen drinks on private islands

Like I said earlier, cruise lines price their beverage packages by the day, and you can't prorate the pricing to skip port days when you're hardly on the ship. Most of us can't party all night after touring in the sun all day, which makes it hard to break even on the package cost on port days.

The bars on certain cruise line private islands — Royal Caribbean's Perfect Day at CocoCay , Norwegian's Great Stirrup Cay and MSC Cruises' Ocean Cay — let you use your drink package ashore. (Half Moon Cay and Harvest Caye do not.) That pina colada set against a palm tree backdrop will jazz up your social media feed and is a great choice for making your beverage package worthwhile.

Other nonalcoholic beverages

Some lines, such as Carnival and Princess Cruises , limit passengers to 15 alcoholic drinks per day, which can make it harder to break even on the package costs. Make the plan cost-effective (and drink responsibly) by interspersing your bar drinks with nonalcoholic options, such as soda, energy drinks, freshly squeezed juices and other bottled beverages like Gatorade or Honest Tea.

Even better, if you can purchase resealable or unopened bottles or cans, you can save them to take off the ship in port. That strategy will help you get full value from your drink package on days you're mainly off the ship.

3 drinks to avoid

You don't really need to avoid any drinks when you have a beverage package, but some choices aren't as useful as others for making the package cost-effective. If you can, go easy on the following drinks — or reconsider whether that beverage package is the right choice for you in the first place.

Beer is usually the cheapest alcoholic drink on board, and it can be filling. If you only drink beer, you might find it more difficult to reach the break-even point for your drink package. (Others will have no trouble downing eight or more beers a day.) Whether you crave craft brews or stick to Bud Light, ask if your cruise line has a cheaper beer-and-wine-only package (such as Windstar Cruises ' Topmast Discoveries Beer & Wine Package) that might make more sense for you.

Well drinks

If your drinks are already paid for, you have no incentive to order cheap well drinks when you can get name-brand liquor for the same price. If you don't specify which vodka or rum you want, the bartender will give you the most basic option. Call out your booze by name, and if you're not sure, ask the bartender which bottles are included in your package. This tip is especially true if you've paid extra for the priciest, most inclusive drink package your cruise line offers.

Bottles of wine

It's true that you will get a 20% to 40% discount on bottles of wine with most cruise line drink packages. But you're still paying extra for alcohol when you have already paid for wine by the glass, beer and cocktails. Filling up on extra-fee wine might prevent you from ordering as many additional drinks as you normally would, keeping you from breaking even on your package price. Stick to wine by the glass, and you can get all your vino without plunking down more cash.

Sure, you can't get all the same vintages by the glass as you can order by the bottle, and you might want a nice wine to celebrate a special occasion. If you intend to order several bottles of wine during your cruise, you might be better off with a wine-only package instead of a broader alcoholic beverage package.

Bottom line

Most people who purchase a cruise drink package will order a variety of alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages each day. However, if you're set on getting the most value from your package purchase, you'll want to be smart about which drinks you order. If you're not at least breaking even with your wine, beer, soda, coffee and cocktail orders, you might want to rethink whether you've chosen the right beverage package for your drinking style.

Costa drinks package confusion

By Big Chik , November 27, 2016 in Costa Cruises

I'm looking to book a drinks package on Costa Mediterranea for December but the web page has me confused. Basically I'm looking for one that includes "proper" coffee, but both of the non-alco options only mention cold drinks. So what kind of package do i need to buy to get my daily coffee fix?

Also they state they are for either 20 or 40 beverages - I assume that means 20 actual drinks not 20 types of drink? They also imply the drinks can be bought for other people so, if I buy the 40 drink version, can I buy 20 drinks each for me and my DW?

I'm used to single person, all-you-can-drink packages on RCL and NCL... Costa have me confused.

There are the All Inclusive Packages, where everyone in the cabin must buy the same package and can only be used by the person who bought the package. As there are various All INclusive packages you will have to check Costa Website for content or give Costa a call. The Piu Gusto and Brindiamo, both AI with alcohol drinks also includes speciality coffees.

There are also coffee cards for 20 or 40 cups (expresso or cuppacino), these can be bought onboard at any bar. You can share this card with your DW as many times as you want.

As GMT said all drinks package include most coffees, soft drinks as well as alcohol.

Not sure if coffee cards are still available seemed be confusion when we were last on (Oct) but coffees are roughly 3.25 including the 15%. if that helps.

Thanks GMT and tenpin. I've booked the 40 drink non-alco package and will look out for coffee cards. My DW doesn't really drink so 2 AI packages don't really cost in just for a decent coffee!.

Thanks again.

The coffee card worked out to the same price as individual, they just added a 125g tin of coffee.

I had the Brindiamo package as an early booking bonus, luckily they have decaf cappucino, otherwise I'd still be hyper-caffeinated.

The coffee card worked out to the same price as individual, they just added a 125g tin of coffee. .

You mean they gave you a tin of instant coffee? Or was it ground?

Either way how did it help? I thought Costa didn't provide tea/coffee

making facilities?

I think it was ground, I decided it was poor value and didn't look closely. I was in a mini-suite last trip, it had a pod-type coffee maker, I forget the brand, €1.55 per pod, I didn't buy any of those either.

If I remember they are Illy not sure of the spelling, but sold in all supermarkets, best bet take your own if in a suite. Wife even took her favourite brand of coffee and ordered tea in morning which comes with just hot water and tea bags.

Boy am I confused.

We tend to buy a wine package (or two) on a cruise but Costa has so many options, we were considering the possibilities. Too bad the website is so little help. And I realize pricing for each package is set for each cruise so just looking for a little guidance. Nevertheless..

Beer and Wine package - The website says there is a beer and wine only package which would work well for us. Is this only available at meals or can we get beer and wine other times of the day. Anyone know how the price pp/pd compares relative to to other packages?

Brindiamo? - How does this package differ from the other AI packages, especially the one that begins with the letter "p"?

Wine packages and wine generally - Anyone have a current wine list for a Costa cruise (preferably Magica)? Do they still do a house wine by the carafe? Someone posted that there are nightly red and white specials. Are these still available on European cruises?

We have never done an AI package on a cruise because we tend to do port intensive cruises and do our lunch drinking on shore. But we always want to check our options.

Hi Badtwin,

Brindiamo is the All inclusive which includes wine/water by the glass, most coffees and selected cocktails only, all persons on booking have to have it.

Pui Gusto is roughly the same but includes all cocktail's.

Both up to 9 euros. including service charge of 15 %

The Intenditore is all the above plus pure fresh squeezed O.J. the Mini Bar in cabin stock to your choice, choice of wines and water in cabin.

Discount of 50 % on any bottles wine purchased in bars.

All booked before sailing get a small discount if you belong to the Costa Club.

There is no drinks package just containing beer and wine. There is a beer package "Pachetto Birra" for 20 x 40 cl draft beer for €93.15. There are wine packages i.e. "Pachetto Classico" 7 bottles of wine and 7 bottles of mineral water for €124.99. Both packages can be bought onboard.

Have a look at this link for more insight into AI packages:

Thanks for the help. Too bad Costa won't put the brochures for each on the website.

The webpage has something called Pranzo & Cena that says it is for people who want beer, wine and pop at meals so I assumed it was a package but maybe it is more of a coupon type thing with a fixed number of drinks. That is why I was wondering if it was just meals or available during other times.

If you book into the site down bottom is a link called 'My Costa' log in with name & booking number. Then go to Beverage's they list all drinks available.

Then click on more info in each section tells you what is included.

Must admit site is a nightmare & through 'improvements' it is getting worse.

The Pranzo & Cena package is a per person per day at €16.99, covers wine, water. beer and non alcohol drinks / cocktails during the time the buffet and MDR are open during lunch and diner.

Is bottle water included?

The Pranzo & Cena package does include mineral water but only by the glass.

Thank you for the clarification. Very helpful

What is the discount on the drinks package if purchased before boarding? AND, how did you find out about it? We did register for the Costa Club as soon as we made our reservations.

I don't think there is a discount on the drinks package if you buy it before hand as it goes on your bill at the end of the cruise. You still don't pay the service charge on the drinks packages. However , if you buy the water package , No Alcohol package, Beer package or wine package you will pay the service charge. I am not sure how old the brochure I have might be but it is 15% on these items. Also states no refunds on items not used and excludes minibar.

We tend to use the Piu Gusto. Lots of nicer juices included as well as slightly better tea and a variety of coffees.I think it very good value for money.

I think you also asked about food in another thread. We were on the NeoClassica in February sailing between Mumbai and Male(Maldives). The food was the same as the usual Italian stuff on Costa but there were lovely curries in the Buffet and (Buffet options) in the MDR lunch times. I am not sure what was on offer in the buffet in the evenings. I love fish but I do not like the fish they serve. Too fishy! The meat dishes are OK. We are not vegetarian but often have the vege options because they can be really good. The pastas vary. I tend to give the meat sauces a miss. Fancy names and they all taste the same. The actual pasta is really lovely and they do all sorts of different types. They also do some really good soup and the desserts are mostly good. Unfortunately Photobucket has blocked all my photos so you won't be able to see anything I posted in my previous reviews.

I hope you enjoy your cruise with Costa.

All discounts are applied at the end of the cruise and will depend on what club level you are, in general the drinks package's are inclusive of the 15% service charge which can add considerable to your bar bill if not aware they are added.

As said above go to 'mycosta' bottom of page sign in with your name and cruise number, select special services top of page or click on wines & beverages . Brindiamo is the best, Pui Gusto includes some cocktails, Intenditore includes special wines Mini-bar to your choice plus.

All purchases are not paid for until your board & can be cancelled up to five days before sailing. Some Countries have slightly different rules so just read the extra info with each selection.

I have always found drink packages to be over priced. Of course it depends HOW MUCH you consume in a day. I tend to just pay for my drinks when I FEEL like it. Some packages for alcohol you need to consume 4 drinks a day just to break even. Get cash Euros and pay your acccount at the end instead of putting it on the credit card. They will allow this after some insistence by you. This way you save the bank's conversion rate which varies from card to card....avg 2.5%..you gotta figure out what you really need.

Costa offers drinks packages that are suitable for even moderate drinkers, I can make it pay with just one glass of wine/beer at lunch & dinner, the rest made up with coffees and water during the day & evening.

2 x wines, 1 water, 4 coffees = 27 euros.

For me it is very easy to break even just with coffee! The rest is for free.

When paying cash don‘t forget that you also loose when exchanging as well, perhaps no commission, but worse rates anyway. No problem at all to pay cash - at least as it is less than 1000 €, Italian law doesn‘t allow more for cash payments.

This is not true that you can pay your account at the end (in Euros), your account must always be in plus, if you do not cover your account by a credit card then a minimum of €150 has to be paid into your account. You do not have to insist that Costa has to take your Euros, they are only to glad to take your money.

A disadvantage of using cash for the onboard account is that on disembarkation morning you have to get up early (from 06:00) to settle your account either payin or a refund, normmaly you cannot leave the ship until the account is closed.

  • 2 weeks later...

Thank you for the info! I believe we are going to get the Piu Gusto package and want to order it ahead of time so I don't have to deal with that on the ship.
