How PinoyTravel is helping modernize the Philippine bus industry

Every Holy Week, these are the usual sights at bus terminals in Manila: long queues at ticket booths, bulky luggage and boxes, crowds waiting for their rides, and frustrated “chance passengers” on standby. Au Soriano had grown accustomed to this scene because she grew up taking provincial buses with her family to and from their hometown La Union. During Holy Week of 2012, however, she says she noticed something different: “people were fighting for bus seats like it was the 90s but they were holding smartphones and tablets.” She wondered how convenient it would be if one could just book a seat online.

Soriano’s lightbulb moment eventually led her to create PinoyTravel , the Philippines’ first online provincial bus booking system and among the first batch of startups funded by Philippine accelerator Ideaspace Foundation .

Since its commercial launch in 2013, PinoyTravel has expanded its services to include ferry and hotel bookings. It will soon launch a reseller portal, allowing even sari-sari stores or small neighborhood convenience stores to sell bus tickets.

A lot of catching up

PinoyTravel is a welcome innovation that’s helping modernize the country’s problematic bus industry.

Until the startup entered the picture, provincial buses had yet to catch up with airlines, which rolled out online booking services a long time ago. Passengers still needed to go to the bus stations to verify trip schedules and purchase tickets – all very time-consuming.

When they pitched their business idea to Ideaspace, Soriano and her team decided it was time that bus trips got smarter.

“We need efficiency. Bus terminals should be like airports where only people with booked seats show up. They go there to claim their seats, instead of hanging out for hours hoping to get seats,” she explains.

That scene at the bus terminal three years ago convinced her that “the market was ready” for something like PinoyTravel.

She says they’ve gotten the attention of the mid- to high-income markets, who are now encouraged to take buses instead of driving their cars to the provinces.

“We were lucky to have hit the Philippine market at the right time. We’re currently the biggest and we plan to keep it that way.”

Soriano can thank the stars for their perfect timing, but to be fair, her intuition and professional experience had a lot to do with it. Before Soriano took the proverbial plunge into the world of entrepreneurship, she had been in the telecommunications industry for over 20 years.

With the rise of the internet and fast-growing usage of smartphones, tablets, and other gadgets, Soriano knew that the future was digital.

More demand than supply

But some industries are late in adapting to the trend. Provincial buses are a case in point.

Even if the market was ready, Soriano says bus companies were reluctant to get on board and partner with them. “They were afraid of changing their processes.”

This eventually resulted in market demand growing “so much bigger than supply.” It presented PinoyTravel with both a challenge and an opportunity.

“Overall, we are only able to service about 30 percent of the online booking demands. It’s a good indicator that people are shifting to online booking, but we need to work closer with regulators and the bus industry in general to get this number higher and service the market. About half of our traffic comes from foreign tourists or OFWs (overseas Filipino workers) who are booking from outside the Philippines.”

PinoyTravel provides booking services for the country’s biggest bus companies, which are traveling to favorite destinations such as Baguio (Victory Liner and Genesis Transport), Tuguegarao (Victory Liner), Leyte, Iloilo, Davao (Philtranco), Iriga (DLTB and Philtranco), Aurora (Genesis Transport), and Manaoag and Dagupan (Five Star). It also got a few other, smaller bus companies on board such as Cherry Bus, Southwest, Jam Liner, Partas, and Ohayami.

Just this year, it signed up 2GoTravel for inter-island ferry trips aboard Negros Navigation, SuperFerry, Cebu Ferries, and Supercat.

PinoyTravel is now in talks with more bus and ferry companies. “The demand is so big we need to sign up as much as we can to fulfill those online requests,” Soriano says.

Going digital

The startup is banking on government regulators to help convince the bus industry that digital is the way to go. After all, it does make a lot of sense for buses to outsource their booking services, which was never their core competency. “Many bus companies had attempted to create their own online presence and after spending huge sums of money, they realized it wasn’t working out for them.”

Soriano shares that in neighboring countries such as Malaysia, “bus companies do not sell tickets themselves. They engage online and physical resellers to sell for them. In turn, they are able to focus all their energy and resources in maintaining their buses and training their drivers.”

It would help if regulators could give the companies a nudge. “I think the regulatory body is focusing too much on apprehending erring bus companies instead of actively working with them in improving the overall service,” Soriano notes.

So what’s next for PinoyTravel? Soriano promises better service and more innovations. The startup is eyeing to raise US$300,000 from investors in February in line with these efforts.

The reseller portal is one feature they’ve been focusing on. “We’ve had many requests for this so we are finally launching it soon,” Soriano says.

PinoyTravel is still an experiment in progress, according to her. And they plan to approach it by being decisive. “The worst decision is indecision. When you have a startup and are doing something new in the market, it’s impossible to predict what would work anyway. Analysis paralysis is your worst enemy. So instead of wasting too much time thinking and analyzing, just go ahead and do what you have to at that moment. If you fail, then you’re one step closer to being right,” she says.

How to Book with PinoyTravel

Step 1: search.

Search for your desired trip by indicating your origin, destination, and travel date. 

Step 2: Select

Click “Book Seats” on your preferred departure schedule. Kindly wait up to 24 hours to receive your confirmation code for the availability of your selected trip. You will be asked to leave your mobile number and e-mail address so you can be updated regarding your booking. 

Step 3: Confirmation

Once you have received your confirmation, visit the “My Reservation” page and input your e-mail address and code. You will be redirected to make the necessary payment for your booking. Confirmation codes are valid for 12 hours only so you must pay before it expires. 

Step 4: Payment

Payments may be made through Paypal Credit/Debit Card, online banking, over-the-counter payments, or Dragonpay. Print the e-mail voucher and present it upon departure. Make sure to arrive at least 30 minutes before your trip.

Pinoy travel app makes provincial commute easier in ph.

Booking international and domestic flights have been made easy by the internet.

But locally, travelling to nearby provinces by land usually means having to line up at bus terminals or in some areas, stand by the roadside and risk being a “chance passenger.”

One start-up company however hoped to ease that dilemma by pulling different bus companies into one app and website where passengers can book their trips.

Au Soriano, founder and CEO of PinoyTravel.com.ph was in the corporate arena. The decision to shift to start-up, she shared, was not totally easy, but was worth it.

“It was difficult, especially in terms of finances. I was at a VP level in my telco career, and then all of a sudden, Im here running a company and not getting a salary. But which is fun because I find it more fulfilling,” she said.

She hailed from Bauang, La Union and during her younger years, she had to travel to and from the city via provincial buses.

In 2013, she noticed that the method by which she traveled then was still being done by many people despite the technological advancements elsewhere.

She pitched a solution to that pain point to IdeaSpace, a start-up competition, and it won its funding capital.

“At the beginning, people were curious, were suspicious if were really real or if were a fraudbecause theres a lot of fraud going in the internetso we had to address that,” she said.

“As more people used us, they get to talk to their friends about us, and after a while, people just know that PinoyTravel is real,” she added.

Before starting the company, Soriano shared that her impression was the insertion of technology was the solution in itself, but she eventually learned that that was the easy part.

“The difficult part is convincing the industry to move from their current process into a new process,” she said.

She said they wooed bus companies by convincing them that most of the land travelers are millennials who are tech-savvy and would prefer the convenience of online booking.

To book a trip via PinoyTravel, you simply have to visit their website or access their app and search for the desired trip. Listed there are the latest schedule and fare per trip.

Then, you would have to book a seat in that trip in that designated bus company. You will receive a confirmation code within 24 hours if the seat is available.

In the My Reservation tab, input the confirmation code and provide your email address, then you can proceed with paying. Payments can be made via debit or credit card, PayPal, or over-the-counter transactions in banks.

You will receive a voucher through email when the payment is successful. On the day of the trip, you have to be on the terminal 30 minutes before the scheduled time.

Soriano promised that seat selection would be made possible soon with some of their partner bus companies to make travelling more convenient. They are also hoping to add more bus companies to their list of partners.

To start off, I already searched the Trip Advisor forum and came across "travelonline". Since there is a " http://travelonline.com " in existence which is different from " http://travelonline.ph ", I wanted to ask for clarifications.

Has anyone ever used " http://www.travelonline.ph " Hotel, tour, or any other arrangement services? If so, what were peoples experiences with this company. I want to be cautious because it's hard handing over your credit card number to someone you don't know.

There is no correlation between likes and legitimacy. It just means that this firms facebook page is liked by 385000 facebook users who viewed it.

Legitimacy may be better confirmed if that many members used their services and LIKED!!!

where did i say likes equals legitimacy?it would be very hard to get that amount of likes if at least some hadnt used its services -i simply gave the op another option for checking those who may have used it .

I venture to guess that some use O Desk services or such to hit like on websites such as facebook. Hard to see a travel agent with more likes than Arnel Pineda, lead singer for Journey and Philippine ICON.

Anyone who has browsed through online purchase reviews will know that it’s a jungle out there. You’ll never know if you’ll get a decent review of the actual product or unrelated (and bizarre) comments coupled with sketchy photos. We’re just gonna go ahead and say it — Pinoys are horrible at reviewing products. Do we blame the incentivized reviewing system that demands customers to rate the products ASAP in exchange for coins or points? Or do we blame the customer’s laziness? Either way, here are the 8 types of Pinoys who make online product reviews.

The lyricist

This type of customer isn’t afraid to get creative with hitting that word count and getting those coins. Their method of choice? Typing the lyrics to their most recent LSS. In the case above, it’s Taylor Swift’s iconic All Too Well  (that better be the 10-minute version).

To top it off, some attach unrelated videos and pictures for maximum benefits:

Involving their K-pop idols

Unless the product is K-pop related, we do not need to see screenshots and videos of idols in the review section. There’s stan Twitter for that. What’s EXO’s Park Chanyeol doing under a product for face masks? Clearly, these people take advantage of their vast K-pop photo library to get free coins.

Praising the courier

PSA: E-commerce companies like Lazada and Shopee employ a third party for deliveries. That means your kuya J&T, Gogo Express, Ninja Van, or whatever else is not  related to the seller. While commenting about the delivery speed is helpful, saying that the courier was “handsome” or “kind” isn’t. (This isn’t the proper avenue to praise them!) TBH, we would rather hear about how the product worked or didn’t work for you.

Getting educational and inspirational

Why write a detailed review of how the product worked for you when you can post nonsense and still get your cashback? Some people prefer to educate the masses and put random paragraphs in there while others took it upon themselves to be the inspiration fellow customers need.

The galit na galit

Sometimes online purchases disappoint us and leaving a scathing review is the only way we can express our frustration. Like the all-caps raging review above. Sure, it was helpful (will definitely consider purchasing from actual pet shops), but I felt like I was the one being yelled at. Bakit parang kasalanan ko?

The random copy pasters

The effort it took to look up a recipe for Homemade Choco Butternut Crinkles could’ve been spent typing a decent review but nooo. These people would rather take the longer route.

The “honest” reviewers

This type of customer doesn’t have time for pretenses. They go straight to the point: “I’m writing this for the coins so deal with it.” Hey, thanks for being honest. Glad you go that off your chest. But you could’ve channeled that honesty into a review and hit the same word count but it’s whatever, right?

The opportunista advertisers

Just when you thought you’ve seen all sorts of crazy reviews, some will still surprise you. There are folks shameless confident enough to start advertising their products through a review. And why not? A lot of people browse through review pages and now they’ll be curious about that random advertisement and maybe check the reviewer’s shop out.

The Fried Chicken Is in New York. The Cashier Is in the Philippines.

A few New York City restaurants are experimenting with virtual staff members, who greet customers onscreen via Zoom from the Philippines.

At Sansan Chicken in Long Island City, Queens, the cashier beamed a wide smile and recommended the fried chicken sandwich.

Or maybe she suggested the tonkatsu — it was hard to tell, because the internet connection from her home in the Philippines was spotty.

Romy, who declined to give her last name, is one of 12 virtual assistants greeting customers at a handful of restaurants in New York City, from halfway across the world.

The virtual hosts could be the vanguard of a rapidly changing restaurant industry, as small-business owners seek relief from rising commercial rents and high inflation. Others see a model ripe for abuse: The remote workers are paid $3 an hour, according to their management company, while the minimum wage in the city is $16.

The workers, all based in the Philippines and projected onto flat-screen monitors via Zoom, are summoned when an often unwitting customer approaches. Despite a 12-hour time difference with the New York lunch crowd, they offer warm greetings, explain the menu and beckon guests inside.

But skeptical customers said they were not eager to join this particular Zoom meeting.

“You hear ‘hello’ and you say, ‘What the hell is that?’” Shania Ortiz, 25, recalled of a recent trip to Sansan Ramen, a neighboring Japanese restaurant that had a gold-framed, flat-screen monitor set up in the foyer with a surveillance camera trained on guests. “I never engage,” she said.

The service is the brainchild of Chi Zhang, 34, the founder of Happy Cashier, a virtual-assistant company that was thrust into the spotlight last week, when a social media post about the overseas workers went viral.

He was caught off guard. The program has been quietly tested since October, but the company’s website has not yet been set up. The technology is already available in stores in Queens, Manhattan and Jersey City, N.J., including at Sansan Ramen, its sister store, Sansan Chicken, and Yaso Kitchen, a Chinese soup dumpling spot. Two other Chinese restaurants using the service on Long Island asked not to be named, he said.

Mr. Zhang is a former owner of Yaso Tangbao , a Shanghainese restaurant in Downtown Brooklyn that closed during the coronavirus pandemic. He said the experience reinforced the idea that restaurants were being squeezed by high rents and inflation, and that a virtual-assistant model, somewhat akin to that employed by overseas call centers, could help maximize small retail spaces and improve store efficiency.

When the virtual assistants are not helping customers, they coordinate food delivery orders, take phone calls and oversee the restaurants’ online review pages, Mr. Zhang said. They can take food orders, but they can’t manage cash transactions.

The workers are employees of Happy Cashier, not the restaurants. And Mr. Zhang said that their $3-an-hour wage was roughly double what similar roles paid in the Philippines.

Tipping policy is set by the restaurants, he said, with one giving its virtual greeters 30 percent of the pooled total each day.

The restaurant industry has long been an entry point for immigrants, and a hotbed for labor violations like wage theft.

But the Happy Cashier model is legal and minimum wage laws extend only to workers “who are physically present within the state’s geographical limits,” according to a spokesman for the New York State Department of Labor.

Mr. Zhang said he expected to quickly scale up by placing virtual assistants in more than 100 restaurants in the state by the end of the year.

The prospect is alarming, said Teófilo Reyes, the chief of staff at Restaurant Opportunities Centers United, a nonprofit labor group that has pushed for a higher minimum wage in New York.

“The fact that they have found a way to outsource work to another country is extremely troubling, because it’s going to dramatically put downward pressure on wages in the industry,” he said.

The fast-food work force is already shrinking, and new technology could further transform the industry, said Jonathan Bowles, the executive director of the Center for an Urban Future, a public policy think tank.

Fast-food restaurants in New York City had an average of 8.5 employees in 2022, he said, down from 9.23 in 2019, before the pandemic.

Virtual assistants have become common in customer service and corporate settings, but are rare in the hands-on restaurant business.

One recent exception came from Freshii, a Canadian restaurant brand that faced a backlash in 2022 over claims of outsourcing jobs, after partnering with a virtual cashier business called Percy.

Mr. Zhang said his business was different. “It’s a service, we are providing a tool. It’s up to them how to use this,” he said of his restaurant clients.

Brett Goldstein, 33, a founder of an artificial intelligence company who made the viral post about the virtual workers, said some commenters had described the model as dystopian while many others had been intrigued.

At the Sansan Chicken in Manhattan’s East Village, Rosy Tang, 30, a manager, praised the service.

“This is a way for small businesses to survive,” she said, adding that the cost and space savings it provided could allow her to add a small coffee stall to the store.

In practice, however, quirks with the model abound.

At the Sansan Chicken in Queens, the virtual assistant couldn’t help a reporter order a sandwich without cheese on a touch pad menu. The assistant said the reporter should order from the in-person staff members at the Sansan Ramen next door, which shares a kitchen with the chicken restaurant.

Will Jang, 30, an associate at Goldman Sachs, had lunch on Wednesday at the Yaso Kitchen in Jersey City — and completely ignored his virtual hostess, Amber.

“I thought it was some advertisement,” like the prerecorded videos in taxi cabs, he said.

Amber, who did not give her last name, took it in stride. After studying business administration in college, she said she worked in-person at a fast-food restaurant. She started this virtual job three months ago.

“It’s my first time to work in a work-from-home setup,” she said in front of a virtual backdrop emblazoned with mustachioed cartoon dumplings.

When asked where home was, she demurred.

“I’m sorry, I cannot share any more personal details with you,” she said. “Can I take your order?”
