There are hundreds of other sites, attractions, restaurants , hotels and special events to see and do in Baltimore, and visitors find most of it all on the historic Pennsylvania Avenue Heritage Trail that runs through town.

Beaches surrounding the island are perfect for swimming and surfing in the warmer months. The visitor center has plenty of information for the island along with some shops and how to further explore the restaurants that serve American cuisine and fresh seafood daily.

Visitors love to rent a boat or take a tour on the ocean to do some fishing, swimming, and diving, play some rounds of golf on pristine courses, spend a day at the Jolly Roger Amusement Park, and participate in all the significant events that happen throughout the year.

Sandy Point State Park

The Nature Center is the central hub where visitors can find all the information about the park, including a map to get around quickly. The Sweet Air Area has hiking and equestrian trails. The Center Area has both the Big and Little Gunpowder Falls and the Jerusalem Mill Historic Village with trails for horses, bikes, and for hiking. The Hammerman Area has picnicking areas, pavilions, and a beach to swim. And finally, the Dundee Creek Marina houses a boat launch that is near the Dundee Archery Range and other fishing areas.

Oregon Ridge Park and Lodge

This large park is over 1,000 acres of trails, beaches, fishing areas, playgrounds, and more. The park is open all year and provides all kinds of fun outdoor activities for anyone, including special events throughout the year, and people are welcome to rent just a pavilion or the entire park. There are hiking and biking trails that run throughout the whole park that have great scenic areas. The park’s history is apparent within the Oregon Ridge Nature Center, which has a museum and exhibits to see how the area became so popular in the early 1800s. Marble and iron mining was prominent in the park, and the nature center displays current excavations and artifacts.

Cunningham Falls State Park

This large state park lies within the scenic Catoctin Mountain Park. Hiking, fishing, hunting, swimming, boating, and picnicking are just some of the most popular ways to enjoy the area. The park is separated into two sections. The William Houck Area is the first section of the park that has camping areas, hiking, and biking trails, the lake with swimming beaches and fishing areas, and Cunningham Falls. Babe Ruth Birthplace and Museum

George Herman Ruth, most commonly called “Babe Ruth,” was baseball’s first legend. The museum provides information and artifacts for baseball fans who wish to know more about the icon. Babe Ruth grew up in Baltimore and spent much of his life there, so that is where the museum is conveniently located. Antietam National Battlefield

This large area is a place of remembrance as a Civil War War Battlefield. Most of the area is full of historical sites, museums, and monuments. Many trails lead to each place, and the visitor center located within the grounds has all the information people need to fully explore the entire park. The battlefield visitor center has a small shop for souvenirs, along with some concessions. The theater provides a welcoming video that is narrated by the famous James Earl Jones, which gives visitors the entire outlook on the battlefield’s history. The museum is also located within the visitor’s center. Out in the park, visitors go and see the Maryland Monument, the New York State Monument, and the 20th New York Monument. Other places to explore are the Dunker Church, the National Cemetery, and Pry House Field Hospital.

Harriet Tubman Byway

The byway runs through the Blackwater Wildlife Refuge and serves to honor and remember the courageous patriot Harriet Tubman, who made history during the time of the emancipation of slaves in America. The route has dozens of stops that mark essential sites in which Harriet Tubman made history. It is a driving tour that spans nearly 125 miles. The main stop along the route is the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor’s Center. The center has some small shops, historical artifacts, exhibits, and outdoor scenery with a nature trail. There are 36 stops along the route, which include the Harriet Tubman Gardens, the Harriet Tubman Museum, and Education Center, with bridges, churches, historically significant buildings in several towns, and more. Old military camps and jails still stand and can be explored. Volunteers re-enact some of the battles and the history of the life of the times during special events and public tours. St. Michaels

Several cruise boats are available to tour the town over the water with narration from a town historian. United States Naval Academy United States Naval Academy

The United States Naval Academy campus is beautiful and pays homage to the naval branch of the military, even while it raises up the new generation. The "noon meal formation," where the midshipmen march in formation, is a must-see as well, and it's held weather permitting. In the free U.S. Naval Academy Museum, you can take a self-guided tour through the Navy's history. But recent visitors highly recommend taking advantage of the guided walking tour of the campus: not only will you gain insight into naval history, but you'll also learn about the academy's beaux-arts architecture and landscaping.

The Naval Academy is also known for its music department. Throughout the year, multiple choral and instrumental ensembles, including the Naval Academy Band, put on performances that are open to the public. Masks are required for everyone who attends a performance. Proof of vaccination or a negative PCR Covid test no older than 72 hours is also required to attend. Check the  website  before your visit to purchase tickets.

Historic Annapolis Historic Annapolis free

What visitors usually refer to as "Historic Annapolis" is the abundance of restaurants, galleries and shops that fill the converted row houses on Main Street. You'll find everything from restaurants such as the popular  Chick & Ruth's  to boutiques like  Lilac Bijoux . On a nice day, this row of shops is a delightful place to meander for a few hours. However, you should also know that the historic area also officially extends to most of downtown and the harbor, which contain jewels like the  Hammond-Harwood House  and the  Banneker-Douglass Museum .

Recent travelers said a visit here is a nice way to spend a cool fall afternoon. If you're driving, visitors suggested leaving your car outside the historic district to avoid the frustrating street parking. Several nearby garages offer a space to park your vehicle while you explore.

Banneker-Douglass Museum Banneker-Douglass Museum free

Although the Banneker-Douglass Museum is small, it's loaded with history. It's named for the Black scientist Benjamin Banneker and Black social crusader Frederick Douglass. Both of these men were involved with the fight against slavery in the 19th century, and the museum does a good job telling their stories. The museum is housed in the former Mount Moriah African Methodist Episcopal Church, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.

Recent visitors to the museum said it presents a well curated overview of African American history in Maryland, and the staff is more than happy to tell the stories of lesser-known figures who influenced the Annapolis and Baltimore communities.

Quiet Waters Park Quiet Waters Park free

If you're looking to stretch your legs in a picturesque place, Quiet Waters Park is the place to do it. Its 340 acres contain everything from an approximately 7-mile paved path, perfect for bike rides or jogs, to formal gardens ideal for a stroll. You'll also find a variety of sculptures and two art galleries that will appeal to art lovers, as well as a playground, where children can work out their wiggles. In the summertime, there are outdoor concerts and canoes and kayaks to rent; and in the winter, an ice rink appears. The park's South River Overlook is another favorite spot, as it offers a panoramic view of the South River.

Annapolis locals say the dog park is the ideal place to bring your four-legged friend, and the area provides a wide selection of activities and wooded trails for all types of travelers to explore.

Ego Alley Ego Alley free

Ego Alley is not an alley in the traditional sense of the word; rather than a walkway, it's a narrow waterway that spills out into Spa Creek. The name "Ego Alley" comes from the queue of expensive boats that parade through the waterway on evenings and weekends. But it does make for an interesting place to meander.

Recent visitors described it as a must-see; the benches along Dock Street are the perfect place to sit, relax and watch the boats and people go by. In warm weather, many people order an ice cream cone from the nearby  Storm Bros. Ice Cream Factory  before checking out the boats. During the winter holiday season, though cold, is another nice time to take a stroll down here since many of the boats are decked out in Christmas lights.

Hammond-Harwood House Hammond-Harwood House

The Hammond-Harwood House, the self-proclaimed "jewel of Annapolis," is in all seriousness, a gem. William Buckland, the indentured servant turned famed architect also responsible for George Mason's Gunston Hall, began work on the townhouse in the late 18th century. He employed elements of the Anglo-Palladian style, which have been masterfully preserved. Visitors to the home will enjoy 60-minute guided tours that touch on everything from the architecture to the families that inhabited the home. A two-hour, $20 in-depth tour of the architecture of the house is also offered by appointment only. Short on time? Consider the 30-minute tour that explores the main house and an abbreviated history. Special interest tours are also available on rotating schedules. Tour topics include clocks and Jane Austen.

Recent visitors to the house said they were pleasantly surprised by how interesting the tour was, adding that the guides are knowledgeable and do a great job engaging visitors and soliciting questions.

Maryland State House Maryland State House free

Even though the Maryland State House doesn't tend to wow visitors with its architecture or exhibits, it is the site of illustrious history. In fact, it once served as the capital of the United States for a short stint. And it remains the oldest state house that is still in legislative use, and the grounds are quite lovely as well. Several recent travelers found the Maryland State House to be an interesting walk through U.S. history, noting that the building is somewhat small and browsing its rooms and halls didn't take too long. In short, if you have an hour to kill, the Maryland State House is a worthy place to spend it.

The Maryland State House is open every day from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and it's located inside of State Circle in downtown Annapolis, just down the street from St. Anne's. Visit the Office of Interpretation for documents to take a self-guided tour. For groups of 10 or more, tours will need to be requested two weeks in advance. For more information, visit the  website . 

William Paca House & Garden William Paca House & Garden

The pristine William Paca House & Garden is an immaculately restored 18th-century Georgian mansion, and it was the home of a young lawyer, William Paca, who eventually became one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence and the governor of Maryland. Along with a tour of the house, visitors should make time to wander around the carefully manicured 2-acre garden.

Recent guests agreed that staff and tour guides were pleasant and informative, and more than willing to answer questions about the house and grounds.

Sandy Point State Park Sandy Point State Park free

When Sandy Point State Park opened in 1952, it was the only state park that African Americans were allowed to visit. Although the park was integrated, the public facilities were still segregated. Stemming from the Brown v. Board of Education decision, the NAACP filed a lawsuit in 1954 to desegregate the park, and the U.S. Supreme Court ordered the integration of the park in 1955. 

Enriched in Maryland history and natural beauty, Sandy Point State Park is an ideal place to visit if you're looking for an outdoor daytrip. The 786-acre park is located on the northwestern shore of the Chesapeake Bay in Annapolis. 

Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse

Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse dates back to 1824 when Congress appropriated $6,500 for the construction of a 30-foot, land-based tower. It wasn't until November 1875 that the lighthouse was first lit. A hundred years later in 1975, the lighthouse was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was manned by the Coast Guard until 1986 when it became the last lighthouse on the Chesapeake Bay to be fully automated. It is the only screw-pile lighthouse in the Chesapeake Bay still in its original location. Today, the lighthouse is owned by the City of Annapolis and managed by the United States Lighthouse Society. 

During the 1 1/2-hour tour guests are taken back through time to the 1800s where they will learn about the history of the lighthouse, how the lighthouse keepers lived, the role the Coast Guard played in lighthouse's lifetime and what's being done to restore and preserve the lighthouse for the next generation.

With 533 miles of shoreline, one of the best ways to explore Annapolis is by boat. You'll get to see Annapolis in its natural beauty and see popular landmarks such as the U.S. Naval Academy , Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. 

There are numerous tours and operators in Annapolis that provide a variety of experiences to travelers. A majority of boat tours are seasonal, typically running from March to the end of October. The following are a few travelers' favorites: 

Smithsonian Environmental Research Center Smithsonian Environmental Research Center

When someone says the word "Smithsonian," most would relate it to the group of museums in Washington, D.C. But located about 25 miles outside of D.C. and about 10 miles southwest of Annapolis is the Smithsonian Environment Research Center. The 2,650-acre campus is made up of forests, wetlands, marshes and 15 miles of protected shoreline. The center serves as an ecological research site for scientists. 

Although it is a working research laboratory the center is open to the public. Guests can access the center's three main hiking trails (Java History Trail, Discovery Trail and Contee Farm Trail). Trails range from 1.2 to 2.5 miles and are moderately easy looped paths. Each trail takes hikers on an educational journey about the importance of the environment. Expect to see a variety of animals and plants in their untouched natural habitats. 

Hogshead Hogshead

Beginning in April 1777, the state of Maryland began housing recruits of the Continental Army in short-term rentals known as "hogsheads" throughout Annapolis. Located in the heart of Annapolis, a Hogshead is a wood-frame structure with a gambrel roof that was a common type of building in the 18th century. 

Today, Hogshead is an interactive museum and landmark that takes visitors on a time traveling experience to life in the 1700s.  An added bonus to a visit at Hogshead are the volunteer museum guides dressed in colonial attire who will speak about life during the Revolutionary War dressed as frontiersman, doctor, solider or indenture servant.

To Mrs. Maryland's list, I would add Harper's Ferry, Chinqateage (sp?), and Chestertown.

Harper's Ferry is a great place to visit. River and Trail Outfitters offers many fun tubing and kayaking trips in the area...all are fairly easy in great scenery. It's easiest to park at the Visitor's Center and take the bus to the town. From the town, you canexplore the old buildings, visit museums, or walk on a bridge over the Shenandoah (or Potomac--I forget which) to the C and O Canal Towpath.

Frederick, MD is surprisingly interesting. We just did a day trip to the Monacacy Battlefield (visitor center is small, but well done), downtown Frederick, and Cunningham Falls State Park. The Monocacy Battlefield is tucked in just a mile from suburban sprawl, but feels a world away, and has a nice auto tour. Cunningham Falls State Park and Catoctin National Park are just fifteen minutes up US 15 from Frederick...both are beautiful mountain parks with lots of scenery.

You're within 2-3 hours of some of my favorite PA state parks, which are always free. Caledonia is a busy park along Rt 30, west of Gettysburg, and has nice paved trails, bridges, and Thaddeus Stevens' blacksmith shop. Pine Grove Furnace, a little farther north, has two small lakes and a great day hike to Pole Steeple. (Both are along the Appalachian Trail.)

In the first two weeks of October, you can check out the National Apple Harvest Festival north of Gettysburg. It's definitely scenery over big city! You'll park in a field and take a school bus to the South Mountain Fairgrounds, where every local organization from a 20 mile radius will try to sell you apple fritters, apple pie, apple pizza, apple cider, apple daiquiris...it's really a lot of fun.

One of the most daunting things about changing journalism jobs is learning a new place quickly. One week I was reporting from Iowa cornfields; the next week from Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. I quickly discovered the magic of a city that is home to America’s first cathedral, the national anthem, and a place to see 20,000 animals, most of them under the sea.

Yet, when you tear yourself away from this city for a day, you get to explore history and nature that takes you from mountain to ocean, all within a three-hour drive. Here is a week’s worth of day trips to make the most of this remarkable area.

1. Reach For The Skyline

Shenandoah national park, virginia.

If you’re in the mood for a real road trip, Shenandoah National Park offers a road with an unbeatable view. You can drive 108 miles to the Front Royal Entrance and then keep on driving through historic Skyline Drive for as many of the 105 miles through the park as you would like to see. The average speed is 35 miles per hour, giving you plenty of time to stop at one of more than 70 overlooks and look for glimpses of bears and deer.

Park your car and hike some of the more than 500 miles of trails through forests, to waterfalls, and — if you’re up for a long day — tackle the park’s most popular destination, Old Rag . This is a very strenuous, often crowded 9.4-mile hike, yet hikers say you haven’t seen Shenandoah National Park until you’ve scrambled up the summit.

For something more easily accomplished, try the Limberlost trail through the forest at Mile 43. Its 1.3 miles are fully accessible to everyone but pets.

Pro Tip: There is food available approximately every 25 miles along Skyline Drive. Build in extra time to enjoy a meal at one of the two park restaurants where the views are amazing but tables are first come, first served.

2. Go See The Other Washington Monument

Baltimore claims the first major Washington monument , but the 555-foot obelisk that came later just 46 miles down the road in Washington, D.C. , is worth a trip. You can see the National Mall monument by foot, bike, scooter, or even tour boat . Book a 90-minute trip that takes you down the Potomac from Georgetown to Alexandria and back for around $30.

The National Cathedral is perfect for a visual scavenger hunt, where you can look for the window featuring a moon rock Apollo 11 astronauts personally brought from the moon to the Cathedral. Star Wars fans can spot the Darth Vader Gargoyle . (If you can’t get there in person, try this virtual tour .)

Pro Tip: Plan ahead, and you can get Washington’s best views from the National Cathedral Tower climb , which takes you up 333 steeply winding steps. These ticketed tours for height-lovers stopped during the pandemic; keep an eye on the webpage for when things resume.

3. Tour The Town That Was This Close To Being Washington, D.C.

Havre de grace, maryland.

Local legend says this community at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay missed being named the capital of the United States by one vote. So, there is no Congress but still plenty to see 41 miles from Baltimore. Let the Concord Point Lighthouse guide your way as it guided ship traffic for nearly 150 years. Maryland’s second-oldest lighthouse is open for weekend tours from April to October.

Explore the area by kayak or see it from a duck’s point of view at the Havre de Grace Decoy Museum . This private, non-profit institution aims to preserve the legacy of birds and decoy-making in the region.

Wrap up your day with crab cakes at Tidewater Grille , where the view of the Chesapeake helps you get away from it all, less than an hour from Baltimore.

4. Speaking Of Capital Cities…

Annapolis, maryland.

It’s 32 miles from Baltimore to Maryland’s capital, which is home to the US Naval Academy . Graduates include President Jimmy Carter, 54 astronauts , and 26 members of Congress. You can walk the grounds like they did; public tours are open during non-pandemic times, and you will need to bring government-issued ID for access .

Pro Tip: Each May, the Navy’s Blue Angel jets fly above Annapolis for USNA Commissioning week. Plan to visit the area for rehearsal day (the date is always publicly available), and you will get a great show with smaller crowds.

Order like a local at Chick & Ruth’s , where you can get sandwiches named for politicians and leaders, like Associate Justice of the US Supreme Court Thurgood Marshall (Grilled cheese with swiss, tomato, and bacon on rye for $9.99). Come early for the Pledge of Allegiance recited weekdays at 8:30 a.m., weekends at 9:30 a.m.

A schooner tour proves why Annapolis is known as America’s Sailing Capital. If the wind cooperates, you may get to sail under the 4.3-mile-long Chesapeake Bay Bridge, which connects Annapolis to Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

5. See More On The Eastern Shore

Bay Bridge traffic gets heavy when the weather warms up. Many people head to beach communities like Ocean City , St. Michaels , and Rehoboth , where extended stays are often required at rentals and hotels. For a beach on a budget, head 112 miles from Baltimore to Assateague Island National Seashore . Here, you will find 37 miles of seashore perfect for swimming, fishing, camping, and watching Assateague’s wild horses .

Pro Tip: Check out the schedule for Ranger-guided programs. I learned how to catch crabs (and throw them back) thanks to a park program, and it gave me much more appreciation for my seafood dinner that afternoon!

Want to get even further away? Buy an Over-Sand Vehicle (OSV) permit to drive on otherwise inaccessible beaches. Make sure you’re sand-ready; National Park Service staff cannot pull you out if you get stuck.

6. Take An (Almost) Presidential Getaway

Catoctin mountain park, nps/cunningham falls state park, maryland.

Every president since Franklin D. Roosevelt has had a chance to relax at Camp David in Catoctin Mountain Park. Even without a White House invite, you can get a sense of the atmosphere at the public part of the NPS Park and nearby Cunningham Falls State Park.

These parks offer hikes just 68 miles from Baltimore, with one of the best taking you to Maryland’s highest cascading waterfall. The easiest hike to see Cunningham Falls is the half-mile William Houck Area lower trail. There are longer, more strenuous options as well.

Pro Tip: This is worth an early morning wake-up call as parking lots fill up quickly.

History lovers can explore the Catoctin Iron Furnace , which is said to have made cannonballs for George Washington’s army, or plan a sweet visit to the Maple Syrup Festival held every March.

7. Get A Lock (House) On Adventure

C&o canal national historical park.

When 2020 canceled international trips, I took a closer look at travel close to home, and the C&O Canal National Historical Park kept me coming back for more. A 184.5-mile trail stretches from Washington, D.C., to Cumberland, Maryland. Even though more than five million people visit the park each year, there is plenty of space to escape crowds, and at its most distant point, the trail is just 139 miles from Baltimore.

Bike or stroll the wide, flat towpath along the canal, which was once a major commercial waterway — there are access points all along the trail with nearby parking.

One point of the trail is significantly different: The Great Falls Overlook 15 miles outside Washington, D.C., feels like Colorado as the Potomac River transforms into a roaring series of falls. There is a wheelchair-accessible, paved footpath that takes you over part of the river to the main channel. You can look across the water to see the Virginia side of the falls at Great Falls Park . (It really does look different if you have time to go to both parks!)

Hikers can enjoy three sections of the Billy Goat Trail . Section A is the most strenuous and can be the most crowded, yet it is always a favorite with friends I take to the park.

Pro Tip: The trail is close to the Potomac River, so weather changes often cause parts of the trail to close. Check out conditions before you start your hike.

One potential exception to the day trip rule: Consider staying in a Canal Quarters Lockhouse . There are seven lockhouses along the C&O Canal available for overnight rentals. Each is decorated in the style of a historic era ranging from the 1830s to the 1950s, and the amenities match — meaning some have electricity and showers, while others have lanterns and water pumps. Pick your level of adventure and enjoy a night back in time before making the trip back to Baltimore.

Annapolis offers the ‘Pride of Baltimore II’ clipper ship a temporary home

A replica of a 19th century “Baltimore clipper” that bears the name of a city struck by tragedy has its anchors down in a new home — temporarily. The ship’s new port is at the Annapolis City dock, because the “Pride of Baltimore II” is unable to return home to the Port of Baltimore due to the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge.

“The ship is essentially in an airport layover of sorts,” according to Patrick Smith, the program coordinator for the Pride of Baltimore II.

The ship was docked in the state’s capital last week and planned to head back to the Port of Baltimore on Tuesday, but like millions of others around the world, the crew woke up to the news that the Francis Scott Key Bridge was no longer standing.

“This tragedy of the Francis Scott Key Bridge being collapsed is another one of those ‘shots heard around the world’ the whole world is talking about,” said Jan Miles, captain of the ship.

The inability to get to its home port left the crew wondering where the 107-foot-tall ship could dock. Smith said they didn’t have to worry long, because offers began to come in from around the state, and even out of state. One offer, though, stuck out — the offer that allowed them to stay put at the Annapolis City dock.

“It just makes sense for us to be in Annapolis if we’re a little closer to home,” Smith said.

The Pride of Baltimore II, and its predecessor the “Pride of Baltimore,” was built specifically to represent the city of Baltimore and the state of Maryland. It travels to ports around the world and educates those who visit it about the role privateer vessels in Baltimore played in the War of 1812.

The original ship was lost in 1986, along with four crew members, after it was caught in a microburst storm near Puerto Rico while returning from Europe.

The collapse of the bridge is keeping the ship from hosting planned outings and tours in Baltimore, but being stuck in Baltimore would have also been problematic.

“If we were stuck in Baltimore, there’s still miles worth of a river that we could be sailing, we could be doing some programming, some two-hour day sails for the underserved community, but then the ship would not be able to leave the river,” Smith said.

A temporary channel has been established for boats, but according to Capt. Miles, it still won’t allow the ship to return home.

“They’ve announced a detour for shallow draft vessels that are not very tall and happens to be too shallow for Pride and too short. So, we’re still on the outside,” Miles said.

While the crew is left adjusting its plans and modifying its schedule, they, along with the rest of the Baltimore maritime community, are rallying together and are thankful for all the work being done to fully reopen the port.

“Our hearts go out to those affected: the port workers, the truck drivers, and then the first responders and the dive teams that are working long hours in cold, dark water,” Smith said. “I think we’re just grateful to be able to be somewhere and open to the public.”

While docked on Monday, dozens of people showed up to tour the ship in Annapolis; among them, Charlene Beyerlein of Arnold, Maryland, and her family.

“I think it does show that the people in Annapolis care about what’s happening, and we’re all impacted by that bridge,” she said.

The crew plans to offer more tours of the ship while it is in Annapolis. Details on the tours can be found on the Pride of Baltimore II’s Facebook page.
