Florida deputies find child in swamp with help from helicopter's thermal imaging camera

wandering girl gif

TAMPA, Fla. — A sheriff's aviation unit used thermal imaging to guide deputies to a missing 5-year-old who had disappeared in a swamp near Tampa.

The autistic girl wandered away from her home Monday evening and was quickly reported missing, Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister said.

The thermal camera captured images of the little girl walking through ankle-deep water.

"Hey, I think I got her in the woods," a deputy in the helicopter told deputies on the ground. "She might be able to hear her name if you call her. She might be about 80 feet in front of you."

A body camera recording showed the moment the deputies made contact with the child.

A deputy called her name and held up his arms. The little girl also held her arms up and walked toward him. He quickly picked the child up.

"Let's get you out of the water. I'll get you to everyone," he told her as they walked back through the woods.

"Their quick action saved the day, turning a potential tragedy into a hopeful reunion," the sheriff said. "Their dedication shows what service and protection are all about here at the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office."

Young girl slips away from babysitter, wanders Pittsburgh streets in freezing temperatures wearing only T-shirt

Julia Felton

A young girl was found wandering outside early Thursday morning in sub-freezing temperatures and suffering from hypothermia in Pittsburgh’s Duquesne Heights neighborhood.

Police received a 911 call from an unknown caller at 4:04 a.m. for a child walking in the area of Grandview Avenue and Cohassett Street, said public safety spokeswoman Cara Cruz. The caller immediately lost sight of the girl, Cruz said.

Officers did not find the girl, estimated to be about 3, for about 45 minutes. Police said a sergeant spotted her at 4:48 a.m. in the 100 block of Oneida Street. which runs parallel to Cohassett and is two streets over. She was wearing only a T-shirt.

“They don’t know if she was scared and hiding because it took a while to find her,” Cruz said. “She’s a very lucky girl, and we are so grateful to officers and medics who found her and attended to her.”

The temperature at 4 a.m. was 23 degrees at Allegheny County Airport in West Mifflin, according to the National Weather Service.

Public safety officials said they did not know how long the girl had been exposed to the elements.

Police said the child had been in the care of a young babysitter when the incident occurred.

Their investigation showed she had somehow opened a door and slipped out of the house in the middle of the night. The mother came to pick her up and discovered she was gone.

Pittsburgh EMS evaluated the child for cold exposure and vomiting. She was taken to the hospital in serious, but stable condition. She was alert and speaking.

Police said they do not anticipate filing charges.

Video shows deputies rescue 5-year-old girl from swamp after she wandered into Florida forest

F lorida deputies rescued a 5-year-old girl who wandered into the woods Monday evening, capturing the search and discovery on video.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office Aviation Unit used thermal imaging to locate the girl walking through a dense wooded area in Tampa, according to a Tuesday news release . She was headed towards a body of water, and aviation guided deputies to find her.

The release did not name the girl, but stated that she has autism.

"(The deputies') quick action saved the day, turning a potential tragedy into a hopeful reunion,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister in the release.

Video shows girl wading in swamp, embrace officers on arrival

The rescue was recorded on police cameras.

The aerial thermal imaging shows the little girl brightly appear on a gray screen, the only living thing in sight.

In body camera footage, officers walk single file, padding through a dense forest looking for her.

"Oh there she is," one of the officers says as they come across a marshy swamp area. HSCO said she was approximately a half of a mile from where she was reported missing.

The girl was standing on a grassy area surrounded by water, and threw her hands up in apparent delight at seeing the officers.

"Come here, sweetheart!" the officer calls to her as she wades through the water to get back to them.

The officer scoops her up, weeds dripping from her shoes, and carries her out of the water.

The video cuts to the girl contently sitting in the bed of a truck with the officer.

"You were walking quite a bit, sweetheart!" he says.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff praised the team's quick action.

What started as a terrifying moment for a parent -- suddenly missing their child who wandered off -- had a happy ending for one Florida family thanks to a quick thinking local sheriff's department.

Officials conducted a desperate search in the air and on the ground to rescue a 5-year-old girl with autism who wandered away from her Tampa home into a wooded, swampy area on Monday.

"They went to the neighbors house, realized 'no we haven't seen her,' now the panic starts to kick in," Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister recalled to ABC News about what prompted the panic and search efforts.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Department aviation unit used a thermal imaging camera to scour thousands of miles of swamps and forest before they spotted something on their radar.

Body-worn camera footage showed the heroic moments when deputies rescued the young girl.

"Hey I think I got her in the woods, she might be able to hear your name if you call her now," one deputy was heard saying from the aerial search. "She's about 80 feet running. I got two deputies moving in that direction."

Deputies on the ground raced to the child's location and spotted her knee deep in a swamp before they lifted her to safety without injury.

"In situations like this, every second counts and its always rewarding to see this quick response for our deputies and to see such a positive outcome," Chronister said.

Officials also told ABC News that the "safety net" program can help families with children who have autism or elderly family members who might wander away.

Chronister hailed his team for the quick action that turned "a potential tragedy into a hopeful reunion."

A 5-year-old girl was reported missing recently near Tampa, after the autistic child wandered off and got lost in a swamp.

The haunt of snapping turtles, alligators, water moccasins, and other beasties, Florida swamps are no place for an unattended child, but fortunately a coordinated rescue operation by the sheriff’s office located her before disaster struck.

Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office deployed their aviation unit with thermal imaging to a heavily wooded area after receiving a call about the missing child.

Speaking to officers among the reeds and cypress, the pilot located the girl about one hour after the search began.

Bodycam footage released by the HCSO shows the three officers finding and calling her name. “We were looking for you sweetheart,” said one.

Fortunately the girl came to the officers instead of running further away and potentially hurting herself, and seemed perfectly happy when one of the rescue team lifted her out of the water and onto dry land.

Sheriff Chad Chronister commended the officers, saying that their “quick action saved the day, turning [a] potential tragedy into a hopeful reunion.”

Sex and Silence: What This Awards Season Tells Us About Hollywood

Whether it’s the return of steamy scenes or the lack of political speeches, the road to the Oscars holds a lot of clues about the state of the industry.

  • Share full article

Franz Rogowski appears naked as he leans his face close to that of Adèle Exarchopoulos, who’s lying beneath him and caressing his jaw.

By Kyle Buchanan

We’re heading into the final stretch of this awards season, but you needn’t wait until the Oscars on March 10 to begin drawing conclusions about what’s transpired.

To me, awards season has always offered a useful opportunity to take the film industry’s temperature. What can be gleaned about Hollywood’s current state from the movies and moments that have factored into this year’s race? Here are a few of the telling trends I’ve noticed so far.

Prestige cinema has become less chaste.

One of the first films I watched last year was “ Passages ,” a bisexual love-triangle drama that features one of the most bracing sex scenes I’ve ever seen in a movie. That encounter between two men (played by Ben Whishaw and Franz Rogowski) is revealing not simply because the actors strip down to so little, but because over the course of this surprisingly lengthy and explicit scene, we come to know so much more about the characters from the power dynamics they negotiate while making love.

Though I assumed “Passages” would be an anomaly, 2023 proved to be a sexually forthright movie year, producing a crop of awards contenders more interested in the joys of sex than any recent season I can remember. Emma Stone spent much of “Poor Things” on an uninhibited journey of desire, convening with a series of men in a way that surely tested the boundaries of the movie’s R rating. In “All of Us Strangers,” the sexual chemistry between Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal was so potent that I felt myself blushing. Even the director Christopher Nolan broke with convention, filming the first sex scenes of his career for “Oppenheimer.”

If there had been a chill in the air while Hollywood learned how to navigate the new inclusion of intimacy coordinators on set, that’s gone now: Movie stars and prestige filmmakers are once again game for the sort of sex scenes that had lately been consigned to premium television. When I spoke with the “Poor Things” director Yorgos Lanthimos in November, he sounded hopeful that attitudes had changed.

“Sex in movies, or nudity — I just never understood the prudishness around it,” Lanthimos said. “It always drives me mad how liberal people are about violence and how they allow minors to experience it in any way, and then we’re so prudish about sexuality.”

Still, there’s been a backlash to some of these sequences, such as social-media posts criticizing the sex and nudity in “Oppenheimer” as superfluous. Some have suggested that movies should abstain from such scenes entirely.

“It’s a strange discourse,” the “All of Us Strangers” director Andrew Haigh told me. “I understand that nobody needs exploitative sex, but sex is so fundamental in our existence that if you don’t see it on the screen, you’re essentially saying you don’t want films to reflect life. And if you don’t depict it there, where will we be seeing representations of sex? Just porn, basically.”

Haigh, who also directed “Weekend” and many episodes of the HBO series “Looking,” is no stranger to sex scenes. While conceiving each one, Haigh asks himself a series of questions: “If it’s the first time they’re with each other, who’s wanting what? What is someone resisting, and what are they connecting over?”

In that way, a love scene can prove as instrumental to plot and character as any other scene, Haigh argued.

“We don’t need bad sex scenes,” he said. “That’s what we don’t need.”

Biopics are retooling in the era of #MeToo.

There may be no film that awards voters are more partial to than a biographical drama about a Great Man of History. This season has a surplus of them, including “Maestro,” “Ferrari” and “Oppenheimer,” and the latter is such a well-executed example of the form that it’s almost certain to win the best picture Oscar.

Still, something feels a little different this time. In past movies of this ilk, the Great Man’s philandering was often minimized or ignored entirely, and you’d have to head to Wikipedia to learn what a louse he had been to the steadfast spouse by his side. The new crop of biopics puts those foibles front and center, mining the conflict that can arise with a vigor that rivals the Great Man’s ambitious pursuits.

In “ Maestro ,” the director-star Bradley Cooper appears more interested in the family life of Leonard Bernstein than in the composer’s storied career, charting the cumulative impact that Bernstein’s affairs with men had on his wife, Felicia Montealegre (Carey Mulligan). “ Oppenheimer ” posits that the pioneering physicist’s extramarital affair with Jean Tatlock (Florence Pugh) led directly to his political persecution.

And the opening of “ Ferrari ” forgoes gleaming automobiles in favor of what seems like a scene of domestic bliss, as the titular automaker (Adam Driver) spends one dawn attending to his son and the boy’s mother. It takes only a beat for the film to reveal that Ferrari is with a secret second family that he has kept hidden for years from his wife, Laura (Penélope Cruz).

What accounts for all the significance accorded to affairs? After #MeToo exposed and deposed powerful men across every industry, perhaps it feels dated to portray a significant historical figure without taking a warts-and-all approach. At least it gives the actresses in these biopics more to do, even if some of these scenes begin to blend together: You now know to expect a blowout argument about the mistress, or a moment when the spurned wife summons everything she’s got and comes to her estranged husband’s defense.

Only “Priscilla” flipped the script entirely, telling the whole story from the suffering spouse’s point of view. Its writer-director, Sofia Coppola , took what would normally be a subplot and made it the film’s logline, focusing on Elvis Presley’s wife, Priscilla, as she struggles with her husband’s plentiful affairs and domineering attitude. Maybe that hints at the next evolution of the awards-friendly biopic: Behind every Great Man, there’s a woman worthy of her own movie.

During acceptance speeches, one big thing is left unsaid.

In the first scene of “Anatomy of a Fall,” the novelist played by Sandra Hüller tries to give an interview from her home but is continuously derailed by the loud music her husband blasts from the attic. Attempting to keep her composure, she jokes about the noise to her interviewer and tries to press on. Still, the music blares, defiant and impossible to ignore.

That sequence couldn’t help but come to mind during a disruption at Sunday’s Independent Spirit Awards, which were held in a big tent by the beach in Santa Monica, Calif. Halfway through the ceremony, a loud chant began just outside the tent, where a pair of protesters with a bullhorn played a recording that called for a cease-fire in Gaza.

People involved with the Indie Spirits appeared unsure how to address the protest chant, which continued until the end of the show and could be heard from the stage and on the ceremony’s YouTube livestream. Jim Gaffigan, a presenter, was rattled when the disruption began, losing his train of thought; later, the comedian Jimmy O. Yang likened it to being heckled. Most of the presenters and winners ignored the protest entirely, though the chant underscored their every word.

Outside, a shuttle bus was dispatched to drive in front of the protesters in a feeble effort to block the noise. When I went to investigate, a crowd of indie-film insiders had also gathered, observing the protesters as they paced on the other side of the event barricades. “The irony,” said one onlooker, “is that most of the people in that tent agree with them.”

If it’s true that a cease-fire is desired by Hollywood’s typically outspoken creative class, you wouldn’t know it from listening to their speeches this awards season. After two years in which the war in Ukraine was acknowledged at nearly every awards show, the conflict between Israel and Hamas has gone unmentioned at most ceremonies. “It’s too fraught,” a studio executive told me after the Independent Spirit Awards protest. “People are worried about their careers.”

Cognitive dissonance is always required when global atrocities happen during a glamorous awards season. There’s even a best picture nominee about that kind of selective thinking: “The Zone of Interest,” in which a well-off Nazi couple exult in their good fortune while living next door to the Auschwitz concentration camp. Accepting one of three BAFTA awards for the film earlier this month in London, the producer James Wilson acknowledged those blinders, becoming one of the few artists this season to mention the current situation directly.

“A friend wrote me after seeing the film the other day that he couldn’t stop thinking about the walls we construct in our lives which we choose not to look behind,” Wilson said in his speech. “Those walls aren’t new, from before or during or since the Holocaust, and it seems stark right now that we should care about innocent people being killed in Gaza or Yemen in the same way we think about innocent people being killed in Mariupol or in Israel. Thank you for recognizing a film that asks us to think in those spaces.”

Though some may think an awards show is no place for a political speech, a great movie is capable of no less than changing the way we see the world; because of that, the act of filmmaking can’t help but be political. I’m sure that executives at ABC, the network broadcasting the Oscars, would prefer that participants stay silent about these issues, fearing audience backlash or tune-out. But if “The Zone of Interest” wins the international-film Oscar next month, as most pundits believe it will, I wonder what we’ll hear.

The Run-Up to the 2024 Oscars

The 96th academy awards will be presented on march 10 in los angeles..

Whether it’s the return of steamy scenes or the lack of political speeches, the road to the Oscars holds a lot of clues about the state of the industry. Here are a few telling Hollywood trends .

Danielle Brooks has inhabited the character of Sofia  in the “Color Purple” for nearly a decade, both on stage and onscreen. As she tries to find her place in Hollywood, it’s time for an emotional goodbye.

A best actress Oscar nomination changes everything, and Sandra Hüller — the star of “Anatomy of a Fall” and “The Zone of Interest” — knows that. She just isn’t sure that’s a good thing .

What are the best performers of the year doing when they’re not on film? Here’s how Emma Stone, Bradley Cooper, and other great actors spend their free time .

Christopher Nolan and Robert Downey Jr. have worked on some of the most beloved superhero films of our time, so how is it that the two had never worked together  on a movie before “Oppenheimer”?

The “Holdovers” star Da’Vine Joy Randolph has had a charmed run  through awards season so far. But does that mean it has been easy to navigate?
