How to Plan a Lifetime Trip to Kenya

  • How to Plan a Lifetime Trip to Kenya

Kenya will abolish visa requirements for global visitors starting in January 2024, guaranteeing a smooth and expedited entry process.

Kenya, with its thrilling wildlife and warm beaches, is a perfect destination for family vacations, romantic getaways, and bucket list expeditions.

However, planning a trip to Kenya can be overwhelming when it comes to selecting the perfect safari parks and deciding on accommodation. Any wrong decision may ruin your trip. For instance, you wouldn't want to find yourself amidst a swarm of vehicles in a park on a honeymoon tour.

So, we are here to help you plan your Kenya trip, whether you are a family seeking unforgettable adventures, a couple looking for a romantic getaway, or bucket list travelers wanting to scratch that one significant trip off your list.

1. Choose the Best Time to Go

While most guidebooks might tell you the best time to visit Kenya is during its dry season. In reality, the best time depends largely on your personal preferences , whether that's going on a safari, relaxing on a beach vacation, or enjoying a quiet trip. We've experienced Kenya's diverse attractions in different seasons and we provide you with our top recommendations below.

a) For a Thrilling Safari Trip

The best times for a safari trip weather-wise are from June to October and from January to March during the dry season in Kenya. During these periods, you will have the chance to see the animals as they gather around the water sources. Also, you'll encounter the most comfortable weather, with warm days and cool nights.

If you want to see the migration of the wildebeest in Maasai Mara, the best time to travel is from July to September (consider September if you are flexible in travel dates) as July and August typically see the most crowds due to the summer holidays.

b) For a Beach Vacation

Most travelers want to combine their safari experience with a relaxing beach vacation at Kenya's inviting beaches, especially families and couples.

The best times for a beach getaway are from July to October and from January to February. Conveniently, these periods align with the best times for a safari. After busy game-viewing days, retreat to the warm beaches to unwind with your family.

c) For a Quieter Trip

If you want to escape the crowds , we suggest you travel from November to December. This period falls in the short rainy season, which doesn't usually see heavy rainfall but still offers good opportunities to encounter various wildlife. It's also a prime time for visiting Kenya's beaches.

According to our experience, if your travel dates are flexible, we suggest you travel from January to March. The weather during this period is dry and there are fewer tourists compared to the rest of the dry season.

Don't worry if you cannot visit Kenya during the best seasons , as you can have a great safari trip during the rainy season if you make good preparations with a well-planned itinerary. We have traveled during the rainy season. The experience of having no crowds around you when you spot a big cat is exceptional.

2. Choose What to Do and Where to Go

You may know Kenya mainly for its incredible wildlife and warm beaches. There are many other things worth your time if you want to explore the country further, such as engaging with diverse local cultures, going on short hikes, and more. Even within safaris, the options are plentiful.

It can be challenging to choose where to go. We are experts and especially excel at helping families and couples to tailor-make a suitable itinerary by combining their needs with the best of this country. Here, we have detailed the top things to do and where to do them.

a) Embark on a Safari Experience: Which Game Reserve Would Suit You?

You have probably heard of the Maasai Mara National Reserve. However, if you want to have a quiet safari experience, Maasai Mara may be not the best choice for you.

  • If you want to have a luxury safari and see the most animals , Maasai Mara National Reserve is the best choice. The park offers private game lodges for couples.
  • If you want to have family-friendly game-viewing , go to Maasai Mara, Lake Naivasha, or Tsavo National Park. These parks are easy to access and have children-friendly lodges.
  • You may want to drive yourself , in which case Tsavo National Park is a great choice.
  • Do you hate having crowds around you? If so, a quieter safari destination , such as Samburu National Reserve or Meru National Park, is a good choice.

Let us know your interests and requirements, and our experts will recommend the reserves that are best suited to your needs.

Insider's tip: For the best wildlife viewing experience, book your safari for the morning when there are more animals out.

b) Relax on a Warm Beach

After a few days of game viewing, we suggest you relax at Kenya's Indian Ocean beaches, which are some of the best in Africa.

Relax on the beach or by the pool with your family. If your family is up for more activity , consider a snorkeling or diving excursion. Kenya's most renowned beaches include Diani, Lamu Island, and Watamu. Let us help you decide which one to pick.

Diani Beach : For a family trip , we recommend you choose Diani Beach. It is the most famous beach in Kenya. The area offers numerous family-friendly activities, such as camel rides, watersports, and snorkeling. There is also a range of accommodations from budget hotels to luxurious resorts.

Lamu Island beaches : Couples may prefer the romantic atmosphere at one of Lamu's beaches. Whether you are traveling for an anniversary or honeymoon , you can enjoy each other's company in this serene and romantic setting. Lamu Island also hosts numerous private villas and luxurious resorts, offering unforgettable accommodation experiences for couples.

Watamu Beach : If you prefer nature and adventure activities , Watamu Beach is a great choice. The nearby Watamu Marine National Park and Reserve is a popular spot for diving and snorkeling. Watamu Beach is also less crowded, offering a peaceful vacation.

c) Going for a Short Hike

If you like nature and adventures , you may add some hiking activities to your itinerary. The ideal route for families and couples in Kenya is through Karura Forest. This spot is a paradise for nature lovers, featuring marshland, a rich diversity of tree species, and abundant birdlife.

d)Explore Local Culture

It is recommended to learn a bit about the local culture and its people in Kenya. We suggest visiting a local village in Masai Mara.

Tell our travel advisors what you want to do in Kenya. They will tailor-make a personal itinerary for you .

3. Decide How Many Days to Stay

For first-time visitors , 2 weeks is an ideal time for a trip to Kenya to discover the highlights of the country. With a 2-week vacation, you could go on a safari trip in Maasai Mara and have a few relaxing days on Kenya's best beaches.

If you are tight on time , a short trip of about 7–8 days is also possible if you concentrate your safari experience on smaller parks near Nairobi, such as Amboseli National Park, Lake Nakuru National Park, or Lake Naivasha to maximize your time. Don't worry about missing out on lots of animals as these parks also boast a great variety of wildlife.

If it is your bucket list trip and you wish to explore Kenya more extensively, you may consider a longer stay of about 3 weeks. This duration would allow for seeing wildlife, exploring Kenyan culture, and hiking in the mountainous regions.

It is also very easy to combine a Kenya trip with a visit to Tanzania for a comprehensive East Africa experience. This enables you to explore diverse landscapes, wildlife, and cultures in one trip. You could, for instance, we can arrange your trip to start with a safari in Kenya's Maasai Mara National Reserve, then cross the border to visit Tanzania's Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater.

You might want to contact a travel specialist to meet your requirements , including the length of your vacation, and design a fulfilling tour that's uniquely planned for you.

4. Consider Your Budget

Kenya offers a cost-effective travel experience when compared with destinations in the United States and Europe. Accommodation in Kenya is widely known for its reasonable pricing, offering fantastic value for money.

Hotel costs : For a truly luxurious experience , high-end resorts in Nairobi and beach locations charge US$200 to US$500 per night. However, there are also mid-range hotels available that range from US$150 to US$250 per night.

Safari costs: Most of your budget for a trip to Kenya will likely be allocated to safari experiences. Luxury safari lodges and camps, such as Governors' Camp in Maasai Mara, charge about US$750–1,500 per night. These prices often include meals, game drives, and other activities or services. Lodges and camps in other national parks are a bit cheaper than in Maasai Mara.

Air ticket costs : When planning a trip to Kenya, you should be aware that international flight tickets can represent a significant portion of your budget.

However, in Kenya, domestic flights are sometimes the most convenient way to travel long distances, especially to remote areas or game reserves. A round-trip flight between Nairobi and Mombasa can run from about US$60 to US$150. Flights to Maasai Mara National Reserve can cost significantly more (expect to pay from US$200 to US$400 for a return ticket).

Taking a private tour is the best way to travel across Kenya even though it may be a bit more expensive. You may not want to be stuck with many strangers around you when game viewing. A private tour is often the perfect solution to fully savor a trip to Kenya, making it a particularly good option for families and couples.

Please feel free to contact us and we will be delighted to create a customized itinerary and provide you with a personalized quote.

5. Getting To and Getting Around Kenya

The major gateway to Kenya is the capital of the country: Nairobi. Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) is the primary point of entry, with flights originating from various locations across America and Europe. For example:

  • For travelers from the United States : Delta Air Lines provides a direct flight service from New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO)
  • If you're traveling from Europe , British Airways offers a non-stop flight from London Heathrow Airport (LHR) to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO).

Best Ways to Traveling from Nairobi to Safari Destinations

Upon landing in Nairobi, numerous flights are available from the city's Wilson Airport to most safari destinations. Taking a flight is the most comfortable way to reach your safari destinations. There are several flights each day, so you won't need to worry about missing one. Take Maasai Mara, for example. There are multiple flights per day from Wilson Airport to Maasai Mara National Reserve each day by different providers.

Please note that these routes typically use small, light aircraft with 12 to 50 seats.

You may consider using a private transfer by land , but we don't recommend it. Traveling by land in Kenya is challenging because of the long journey on bumpy and dusty roads. Your comfort and enjoyment of the safari experience are our priorities, and we believe air travel provides the best solution for these long distances.

There are also flights between different Safari destinations. By taking a private tour with us, your guide and private car will transfer you to the airport for your flight to the next destination. It will save you a lot of hassles.

How to get to Kenya

Kenya has two main international airports:

  • Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi (JKIA)
  • Moi International Airport in Mombasa

Most people fly into Jomo Kenyatta International Airport as it provides the best connections and also the most flights. Most of the people who fly into Moi International Airport usually decide to start off their Kenya itinerary with a beach holiday. This is fine, however, based on my own personal experiences and also having had conversations with countless travellers, beach destinations are best visited towards the end of the trip as a relaxing “cherry on top” after having completed a comprehensive safari adventure.

When to visit Kenya

Depending on your interests and travel goals, there is no one optimum time to visit Kenya. The two main rainy seasons and two dry seasons that Kenya experiences might affect outdoor activities, wildlife viewing and the overall tourism experience. Generally speaking, the two dry seasons are the ideal periods to travel:

1st dry season (January to March): Between the light rains in November and the heavy rains in April and May, there is a brief dry period. It’s an excellent time to see wildlife because the weather is generally dry and mild at this time. In national parks and reserves, it’s simpler to see animals because the foliage is less dense. Many animals are giving birth during this time, so you could get lucky and view some young creatures coming into the world!

2nd dry season (June to October): This is the long dry season and basically Kenyan “winter” as the locals would describe it. It’s regarded as the ideal time to go on safari and see the wildlife because of the pleasant climate. Furthermore, between July and August, the Maasai Mara experiences the famous wildebeest migration, which draws tourists from all over the world. Although it might get chilly in the mornings and evenings, the weather is normally pleasant and the days don’t get too hot.

How to get around Kenya

Short trips around nairobi…..

Uber will definitely be your best bet. It’s the safest and most cost-effective option. The only thing you’ll need is a sim card, which you can either get at the airport or you can visit one of the many shopping malls in Nairobi. Personally I prefer using Safaricom as it has the best connectivity and buying internet bundles are super affordable (1GB for 99 Kshs, which is about US$0.70).

If you feel adventurous, you can also use motorbikes, or locally known as boda bodas. They are in abundance here in Nairobi and quite cheap, however, it’s not the safest option to get around. I’d recommend this only for very short trips, however, for anything longer than a kilometre, Uber will be your best option!

Day trips around Nairobi….

Hiring a private driver is the most practical option. Once you agree a daily rate with them, the driver can pretty much stay with you, wait for you while you’re doing various activities, and then take you back to your hotel/Airbnb. It’s super flexible and although a little pricier than the Uber route, you’ll have less stress and fewer worries about someone running up your tab because you might want to spend a few more hours outside exploring.

Insider tip : Personally, I tend to hire Paul, one of the local drivers who has his own car and has extensive experience taking clients to various destinations. As I run an Airbnb , I work with tourists and explorers on a daily basis and they all have nothing but amazing things to say about him. You can also find him featured in the popular YouTube channel Fernweh Chronicles here . His contact information is in the description of the video.

For your safari trip…

Definitely go with a professional safari company. The guides and drivers who work for these companies are highly knowledgeable, take care of all the practical things like paying park fees, have lots of experience and know exactly how to get you from A to B, while maximising your chance of wildlife encounters and providing a comfortable travel experience. I’ve got more tips on how to pick a safari guide in East Africa .

There are lots of safari companies out there, so a simple Google search will provide you with lots of info. I’ve also outlined below some of the most popular international and local travel companies:

International safari companies

  • Micato Safaris
  • Wilderness Safaris

Local safari companies

  • Bonfire Adventures
  • Gamewatchers Safaris

Companies are usually very flexible and you can either create your own custom itinerary or join a group tour. Going solo is usually more expensive, however, you’ll have complete freedom over how you spend your time, can make last-minute changes to your itinerary if you feel like it and are generally more in control of your trip.

2 weeks in Kenya itinerary

So, now that we’ve covered the basics, let’s jump into the 2-week Kenya itinerary!

Summary of itinerary for Kenya trip

  • Day 1: Arrive in Nairobi via JKIA
  • Day 2: Explore Nairobi

Day 3: Visit to Lake Naivasha

  • Day 4: Maasai Mara
  • Day 5: Maasai Mara
  • Day 6: Maasai Mara
  • Day 7: Maasai Mara
  • Day 8: Tsavo National Park
  • Day 9: Tsavo National Park
  • Day 10: Diani Beach
  • Day 11: Diani Beach
  • Day 12: Diani Beach

Day 13: Lamu

Day 14: nairobi.

Top tip: If you’ve got more time up your sleeve, why not tack on some more time in East Africa? I have an amazing Tanzania itinerary and guide to visiting Uganda to inspire you!

Day 1: Arriving in Nairobi

Once you arrive at JKIA to begin your amazing 2 weeks in Kenya, it’s usually a good idea to take it easy the first day and get used to the city. Day 1 can be used for light exploring, perhaps getting a sim card so that you’ll be well connected for the rest of your stay and will also be a good opportunity to go out for dinner at one of Nairobi’s popular restaurants.

If you arrive in the morning, you can even start exploring right away. I’d recommend visiting the Giraffe Center , one of the most popular things to do in Kenya. It’s quite easy to get there and not very time consuming, so it’s the perfect light activity for your first day in Kenya. Combining it with a late lunch at Boho Eatery would be an amazing way to kick off your Kenya adventure!

A person feeds a giraffe at the Giraffe Center in Nairobi, one of the most popular things to do in Kenya and a must for your itinerary!

Where to stay in Nairobi

There are plenty of great accommodation options in Nairobi, so it just depends on your budget. I’ve listed some of the most popular stays below:

  • Luxury: Tribe Hotel – with stunningly designed rooms, a pool and gym, you’ll be pampered here
  • High end: Best Western Westlands – in a great location close to many Nairobi attractions
  • Budget: Edaala Comfort Cottage Rooms – lovely B&B in lush gardens, run by a local couple who aim to create a home away from home

Day 2: Exploring the city

This is where the fun begins. If you are interested in the lesser-known, more “real” aspects of Nairobi life, I’d recommend starting this Kenya trip by joining an authentic Nairobi city street tour hosted by former street kids . The social enterprise is called Nai Nami and empowers former street kids to tell their stories about growing up on the streets of Nairobi. Having lived in Nairobi for a long time, I’ve only recently gone on this tour and learned so much!

David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is another place that should be on your list. It’s a very popular tourist destination where you can watch baby elephants get nursed and taken care of – these are babies whose mothers have been killed by poachers. It’s an amazing sight to see and quite popular!

Pro tip : Make sure to book this well in advance as spots are usually booked out months in advance!

If you’re a history buff then I’d definitely add the Nairobi National Museum to your list. The Nairobi National Museum, one of the most well-known museums in the country, exhibits Kenya’s enormous cultural and natural history. It was established in 1910 and is one of the oldest museums in East Africa.

Another museum you should visit is the Karen Blixen Museum . The museum focuses on the renowned Danish author Karen Blixen and provides information about Karen Blixen’s life as a coffee plantation owner here in Kenya. If you’re a fan of Karen Blixen’s book or the movie Out of Africa (starring Meryl Streep), you should definitely add this to your list of things to do in Nairobi!

A long, low building with red tiled roof, this is the front of the Karen Blixen Museum, a popular place to visit in Kenya

I added Lake Naivasha to this Kenya travel itinerary because it’s a personal favourite. Some like to head straight to the major national parks, however, I find Naivasha to be a little bit underappreciated as you can have an amazing time there and see great wildlife. Here are some of the activities you can do while in Naivasha.

Visit Crescent Island

On the east shore of Lake Naivasha, Crescent Island is a tiny slice of paradise. It’s frequently referred to as “Naivasha’s best-kept secret”. The island is ideal for nature walks, wildlife viewing and bird watching. A close-up view of the island and views of local wild species including hippos, zebras and giraffes can be seen on boat trips on Lake Naivasha. Please be aware that the only way to get to the sanctuary is by boat, which costs about USD$30 roundtrip, but it’s advised to have a look at the latest rates on the sanctuary’s website.

Spend a day hiking at Mount Longonot National Park

If you appreciate hiking as much as I do, then this should be on your list. It takes roughly five hours to complete the well-marked track. The trek to the mountaintop and along the crater’s rim is the park’s main draw. It provides stunning views of neighbouring hills, the Great Rift Valley and Lake Naivasha.

Hell’s Gate National Park

A picture of stunning scenery and riding among wildlife comes to mind when you think of Hell’s Gate. That and so much more can be found in this national park. I went to the park almost every weekend for the three months I lived in Naivasha. I was drawn to it because of its distinctiveness, and writing this piece makes me want to go back. Although a game drive is an option, cycling through the park is highly advised. In ways you can’t imagine, it draws you closer to nature.

Days 4-7: Head to Maasai Mara

Next on the list is probably the highlight of the entire trip when it comes to wildlife viewing.

One of the most amazing things to do in Kenya due to its diverse range of animals, breathtaking landscapes and cultural value, visiting the famous Maasai Mara national park is an experience you won’t forget.

The Mara is well known for having a wide variety of animals as well as for hosting the famous Great Migration. Millions of wildebeests, zebras and other species traverse the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem in search of new grazing land during the yearly Great Migration, which is a stunning display. It’s a one-of-a-kind chance to see one of the most amazing natural phenomena in the world on game drives through the national park.

It is also home to the “Big Five” (lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros) as well as a large number of other species. The only thing Kenya is missing is gorillas, which you can easily visit in Uganda or Rwanda !

A giraffe and other wildlife at Maasair Mara National Reserve, one of the must-visit destinations in Kenya

Where to stay near Maasai Mara National Reserve

  • andBeyond Kichwa Tembo Tented Camp
  • Saruni Mara
  • Governors Camp
  • Mara Explorer Camp
  • Angama Mara

Angama Mara - one of the luxury hotels to stay near Maasai Mara on your Kenya itinerary. Four sun beds and a sunken lounge on a deck overlooking Maasai Mara National Reserve.

Pro tip: If you’re not a fan of spending many hours in the car and want to save some time, you can also fly to the Keekorok Airstrip. It might be a bit pricey but if you’re on a tight schedule, I’d definitely consider it.

Days 8-9: Tsavo National Park

Tsavo National Park, which is split into East and West, calls with its wild beauty and appeal, making it an alluring location for nature lovers and explorers alike. You can experience a true African safari in the huge stretches of Tsavo East and its rocky terrain, where you can see a wide variety of species against the striking backdrop of the Yatta Plateau.

Tsavo West is home to stunning settings like the Mzima Springs, where clear waters flow amid thick flora and draw a variety of species. The park is also a hotspot for hiking and geological study thanks to the Shetani Lava Flows and the charming Chyulu Hills.

The sun shining through clouds over a landscape with green trees, savannah and hills in the background - this is Tsavo National Park, one of the many national parks in Kenya

Where to stay near Tsavo National Park

There are various great places to stay during your Tsavo trip. I’ve listed below some of the best-rated camps:

  • Finch Hattons Luxury Tented Camp
  • Salt Lick Safari Lodge
  • Ashnil Safari Camp

Pro tip: Alternatively you can switch Tsavo National Park with Amboseli National Park on this Kenya itinerary, if you prefer. Tsavo lies right in the middle between the coast and Nairobi, hence why it’s a convenient destination in the itinerary. Because Amboseli is a little further away, I’d add an extra night to make sure you get the most out of your Amboseli experience.

Days 10-12: Diani Beach

You can’t have 2 weeks in Kenya without some beach time. After a busy week of wildlife viewing at the Mara and Tsavo, I always recommend visitors to set aside a couple of days for a relaxing time at the beach.

Daini Beach has won various awards in the last couple of years for being the best beach destination in Africa. Due to its pristine beach and abundant marine life, it serves as both a getaway and a hotspot for water activities including snorkelling, scuba diving, kite surfing and deep-sea fishing. I’ve listed below a few recommendations of how you can best spend your time in Diani.

Relax by the white sand beach

Sometimes doing nothing is just as good as doing something, especially if you’ve just come back from a week of safari. Diani is the best spot to just sit by the beach, read a book, listen to some music and just let the day go by.

Go scuba diving/snorkelling

If you are into some adventure, then I’d definitely recommend scuba diving in Diani Beach. I obtained my PADI Open Water Diver certification earlier in the year and had an absolute blast doing it. The place I’d recommend is Diving the Crab . Their instructors are super professional and they always have the most-up-to date equipment at hand.

A person in scuba diving gear underneath the water - scuba diving is a great thing to do in Kenya at one of the many coastal towns and resorts

Have lunch at The Salty Squid

The Salty Squid is a popular beach restaurant and personally my go-to place when in Diani. Their food is delicious and they also have great outdoor seating right by the beach where you can spend a day working and enjoying the views of the ocean. Their wifi speed is quite good too!

Have dinner in an actual cave

Ali Barbours Cave Restaurant is a must-do when in Diani. The setting is quite unique as you’re having dinner in an actual cave. The ambience is quite nice and romantic which makes it the perfect place to go for dinners, especially if you are travelling with your significant other.

People eating inside a cave, there are tables with white tablecloths and lanterns hanging from the ceiling. This is Ali Barbours Cave Restaurant, a must-do when visiting Diani Beach in Kenya

Where to stay in Diani Beach

Diani offers a wide range of accommodation options such as luxury resorts, boutique hotels and beachfront cottages. When I go, I usually stay at self-catering accommodation due to the flexibility it provides.

Places I would recommend are:

  • Amani Luxury Apartments : Spacious self-catering apartments which are actually quite affordable. Due to its popularity it’s wise to book early, especially if you’re planning to visit during the high season.
  • Swahili Beach : High-end luxury resort with excellent facilities.
  • Diamond Leisure Beach and Golf Resort : If you’re into golfing, then this is the best place to stay. Not as pricey as Swahili Beach but still quite luxurious with excellent facilities.

Lamu is a lovely island off the coast of Kenya where ancient traditions and stunning nature combine to create an exceptional vacation destination. Lamu is a place where time seems to have stopped in the midst of stunning natural scenery. The lengthy Swahili cultural past is preserved there.

This East African treasure, with its beautiful beaches, magnificent architecture, and courteous hospitality, is for anyone looking for a real and immersive Swahili experience.

A view of Lamu in Kenya from the water - there are white buildings and green palm trees, with small boats on the water. Lamu is one of the best places to visit in Kenya for beach activities

There’s no shortage of things to do in Lamu to fill the last few days of your Kenya itinerary.

However, there are two things everyone NEEDS to do when in Lamu:

Visit the Lamu Museum

One thing I’d definitely recommend is to visit the Lamu Museum. The museum houses a collection of the island’s extensive history, cultural legacy and maritime customs. It’s set in a gorgeously restored Swahili structure that displays the unique architectural design of the island.

Take a dhow ride (traditional Swahili sailboat)

The other must-do in Lamu is to take a dhow ride around the Lamu archipelago. There are various tour operators who offer such rides, which are quite amazing! You’ll set sail early in the morning and spend a couple of hours on a dhow taking in all the beauty that Lamu has to offer. The people working on the boat will also prepare fresh seafood, which is absolutely delicious! This is a must do activity for anyone visiting Lamu.

I would usually do the dhow ride early in the morning so that you can catch your flight back to Nairobi late in the afternoon. To save time, you’ll be able to also take your luggage with you so that you don’t have to go back to the hotel.

Pro tip: Make sure to let the dhow operator know when you have to be at the airport so that they time their ride in accordance to the tide. The last time I was there I almost missed my flight because we mistimed our schedule and had to wait until the tide was high enough to reach the part of the island where the airport is located.

Where to stay in Lamu

  • Lamu House : Small boutique hotel in the heart of Lamu town
  • The Majlis Resort : A luxury beach hotel, located on Manda Island in the Lamu archipelago, where you have panoramic views of Lamu Island and the Ras Kitau beach
  • Various Airbnbs: Lamu is also home to various great Airbnbs . You can either stay in Lamu town, or in the more secluded Shela beach which is only a short boat ride away from the main town.

This is the last leg of the 14 day Kenya itinerary. It’s usually most practical to return to Nairobi as Jomo Kenyatta airport has the best international flight connections.

If your flight home is late at night, make sure to leave Lamu on the morning flight. Domestic flights can sometimes be unpredictable (including unexpected delays) so make sure to give yourself enough time between the Lamu to Nairobi flight and your flight back home.

Practical information

Kenya visa requirements.

An Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) is required to enter Kenya for tourism-related purposes. By completing a very easy online eVisa application, applicants can get a Kenya Electronic Travel Visa. Kenya’s ETA is good for either 90 or 30 days, depending on the application type. In two to three days, applicants might receive an approved Kenya ETA. Passports must be valid for at least six months from the date of entry.

Before applying, please review the list of nations eligible for Kenya ETA.

Is Kenya safe?

I’ve been living in Kenya on and off since 2009 and believe it’s quite safe. When going on safari I don’t think there is anything to worry about when it comes to safety. The camps, their guards and drivers are all very professional and know the dos and don’ts when viewing wildlife. Therefore it’s always good to listen when they give instructions on how to behave during a safari and during a wildlife encounter.

When exploring Nairobi make sure you are always aware of your surroundings. Avoid crowded areas as this is where you will usually encounter pickpockets. Always stay in safe areas of town after dark i.e. I would personally avoid the CBD after dark, but areas such as Westlands, Lavington, Gigiri and Karen are usually very safe.

Political demonstrations do happen from time to time so it’s good to check your country’s government warnings before travelling. Here’s a link to Australia’s advice on travelling to Kenya, as well as the United Kingdom and the United States .

The best time to travel to Kenya largely depends on your interests and the regions you plan to visit. Generally, the dry season from June to October and December to March is ideal for wildlife watching as animals congregate near water sources and vegetation is sparse, making them easy to spot.

This period also coincides with the Great Masai Mara Migration, which is a spectacular sight, especially from July to October. For birdwatching enthusiasts, the rainy season in November and from April to May provides an opportunity to see migratory birds in full splendor, although these months may see afternoon rains and denser vegetation.

The Kenyan coast with its beautiful beaches is best visited from December to March when the weather is hot and dry. In general, consider your interests and consult regional guides to find the perfect time for your Kenyan adventure.

kenya trip of a lifetime

Trip of a Lifetime!

My husband, son, and I recently spent eight fabulous days on safari with Spirit of Kenya—one day in Amboseli, one day at Lake Nakuru, and six days at the Malaika Lodge in the Maasai Mara. The food was excellent, lodging very nice, and the morning and evening game drives were spectacular. Our guide, Gideon, was fantastic. He has studied animal behavior extensively and knew when to move on and when to hang around a little longer for a chance at seeing a chase. We saw three chases in the Maasai Mara: a lion chasing a zebra, a pair of cheetahs chasing an impala, and the same two cheetahs finally overtaking a small eland. Gideon also has a photography background, which allowed him to get us into great position for pictures. We saw every animal we could have hoped for, with the cheetahs on the next to last day, and a leopard on the final day. Our initial contact, Vanessa, was invaluable in using our input for designing the games drives. She was amazingly prompt at responding to us as we kept gaining information and making adjustments to set up the trip in a way that suited us. We greatly appreciated the flexibility to create the trip of a lifetime. Likewise, being picked up at the airport and dropped off at the airport for the flight home came without a hitch. We highly recommend Spirit of Kenya for the ease of communication, designing the trip, and for a trip beyond our expectations.

Dear Kathleen C, Thank you for taking the time to share your incredible safari experience with Spirit of Kenya. We are thrilled to read about your eight fabulous days exploring with your husband and son. It's fantastic to hear that you enjoyed excellent food, comfortable lodging, and spectacular morning and evening game drives throughout your trip. Your guide Gideon's extensive knowledge of animal behavior, coupled with his photography background, truly enriched your safari experience. It's remarkable that you witnessed such incredible moments, including chases and sightings of various wildlife. We're also delighted to hear that Vanessa, your initial contact, played a pivotal role in designing the game drives to suit your preferences. Our team's commitment to flexibility and creating tailored experiences for our guests is of utmost importance to us. Thank you for choosing Spirit of Kenya, and we look forward to welcoming you and your family back for more extraordinary adventures in the future.

Thank you for choosing Spirit of Kenya for your safari adventure, and we look forward to serving you and your friends on more remarkable journeys in the future!

I went on safari with my 12-year-old son in late October with Spirit of Kenya. I’m a wildlife photographer and it was my son’s first trip to Kenya – I’ve made several trips myself before and I wanted to take him to a country that I love and teach him about photography in the process. Our itinerary was one week long and took us to Samburu, Lake Nakuru and the Masai Mara. It was an unforgettable trip for both of us. I’m a planner, so I began my research a year before and booked with Spirit of Kenya about nine months in advance after looking at quite a few different Kenya-based Safari companies. Filipa, who managed my booking and answered all of my endless questions right up to the day we flew to Nairobi, was absolutely superb – fantastic communication, very helpful advice and great attention to detail, as well as being very nice indeed to deal with. On the ground, our guide was George. He was absolutely lovely, as well as being very experienced and knowledgeable. I’ve been lucky enough to go on many safaris in east, central and southern Africa but we nonetheless learnt a great deal from him. He seemed to know everyone – from rangers to guides to camp staff, and everyone seemed to want to go out of their way to help him get us to the best possible sightings. He also had an instinctive understanding of light and photography, which meant that, without me having to ask, we always found ourselves in the optimal position in terms of the sun. I’m very grateful indeed to Filipa, George and the whole team at Spirit of Kenya for creating such a magical trip, and I would unhesitatingly recommend them.

Dear jayhop, Thank you for sharing your incredible safari experience with Spirit of Kenya! It's heartwarming to read about your passion for wildlife photography and your desire to introduce your son to the beauty of Kenya. We are thrilled that your one-week itinerary provided an unforgettable adventure for both of you. We understand that meticulous planning is key, and we're delighted that Filipa, who managed your booking, went above and beyond in addressing your questions and needs, making your pre-trip experience seamless. George's experience and knowledge, along with his innate understanding of both wildlife and photography, ensured that you and your son had an enriching and captivating experience. It's wonderful to hear how he made sure you were always in the perfect position for photography. Thank you for choosing Spirit of Kenya for your safari, and we hope to welcome you and your son back for more unforgettable adventures in the future!

We loved Kenya. Spirit of Kenya was responsive and put together a good package. We did 10 days, but you could get the same experience in 7 or 8 says. Thomas was our private driver and was excellent. I recommend the private tours. Three different safari locations are all you need. Skip Tsvaro reserve. We saw every animal species in multiple locations.

Dear Wander13060670199, Thank you for sharing your feedback about your Kenya safari experience with Spirit of Kenya. We're delighted to hear that you loved your time in Kenya and that we were able to provide a package that met your expectations. It's wonderful to know that you had an excellent experience with Thomas as your private driver. Private tours often provide a more personalized and flexible adventure, and we're thrilled that you recommend them. Thank you for choosing Spirit of Kenya, and we appreciate your feedback. We hope to have the pleasure of serving you on another unforgettable safari in the future.

I can say no complaints. All are under our expectation. Guides, accommodations, meals, vehicles, game drives, hot air balloon all are good. Thank you for all SOKarrangements to let our trips going smoothly. We are no regrets. Thanks our Kenya guide Nafatali & Tanzania’s guide Hillary.

We take pride in ensuring that our guests have a seamless and enjoyable adventure, and your positive feedback reaffirms our commitment to excellence. We greatly appreciate your acknowledgment of our Kenya guide, Nafatali, and our Tanzania guide, Hillary. They are both exceptional individuals who play a crucial role in making our guests' experiences memorable. Thank you for choosing Spirit of Kenya, and we are grateful for your trust and satisfaction. We hope to have the privilege of hosting you on another remarkable journey in the future.

Due to the extensive experience of the safari guides and years of organising African safaris, spirit of Kenya ensured our safari was an unforgettable experience. Jorge, our tour organiser was so patient and helpful when answering my 101 questions😁. His knowledge of suitable game parks and the best accomodation options to suit our needs, made a big difference to our enjoyment of the safari. Also our tour guide James. I can't say enough about him. Due to his years of experience, knowledge of Masai culture and professional attitude and driving skills, he made a world of difference to our experience. Many other safari tourists didn't see half of what we saw, or experienced because of less experienced guides. We met other spirit of Kenya guides also and they all seem good but I'd highly recommend you ask for James if possible, when organising your trip. Date of experience: October 2023

About this trip

“Africa changes you forever, like nowhere on earth. Once you have been there, you will never be the same. But how do you begin to describe its magic to someone who has never felt it? How can you explain the fascination of this vast, dusty continent, whose oldest roads are elephant paths? Could it be because Africa is the place of all our beginnings, the cradle of mankind, where our species first stood upright on the savannahs of long ago?”

* Brian Jackman (British journalist and author, best known for his interest in wildlife, especially in Africa)

Area Overview

Nairobi is the capital of Kenya and East Africa’s most cosmopolitan city, with a vibrant population of 4.5 million. Unique to the city is the proximity of Nairobi National Park, a true wilderness area juxtaposed against the larger urban metropolis. It is the only national park like it in the world and a real embodiment of the human-wildlife conflicts that challenge many African communities who must learn to cohabitate with wildlife on their doorstep.

Nairobi National Park is one of the best places in Africa to see rhinos and also has a healthy population of lions, leopards, cheetahs, and plains game like giraffes and antelopes. Other attractions include the Karen Blixen Museum, the Giraffe Center, Daphne Sheldrick’s Elephant Orphanage, a visit to a tea farm, and shopping for local crafts and trinkets. There are some great local and cross-cultural restaurants to explore, from roadside food stalls to local nyama choma (barbecue joints) to five-star dining establishments.

The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust

Founded in 1977 by Dr. Dame Daphne Sheldrick DBE, in memory of her late husband, famous naturalist and founding Warden of Tsavo East National Park, David Leslie William Sheldrick MBE, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust claims a rich and deeply rooted family history in wildlife and conservation. The Nairobi Nursery is open between 11am-12pm to the public, to give people the opportunity to meet these amazing creatures. Entry fees are a donation to the Trust.

Giraffe Center

The Giraffe Centre is the creation of the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife (A.F.E.W. Kenya), a Kenyan non-profit organization. The main purpose is to educate Kenyan school children and youth on their country’s wildlife and environment, as well as give local and international visitors an opportunity to come into close contact with the world’s tallest species, the giraffe. The center is home to the endangered Rosthchilds Giraffe and visitors can get up close and personal with them! Entry fees are $15 per adult and $7.50 per child.

Karen Blixen Museum

Karen Blixen Museum was once the centerpiece of a farm at the foot of the Ngong Hills owned by Danish Author Karen and her Swedish Husband, Baron Bror von Blixen Fincke. Located 10km from the city center, the Museum belongs to a different time period in the history of Kenya. The farmhouse gained international fame with the release of the movie ‘Out of Africa’ an Oscar-winning film based on Karen’s autobiography by the same title.

There are a variety of different shopping areas all over Nairobi. The most popular area is in Karen where you can find Utumanduni, House of Treasures, and Langata Link Shops.

Utumanduni is an emporium of handcrafted artifacts, fashion, accessories, homeware, beauty products, antiques, and more, Utamaduni is a one-stop shop for exquisite products proudly made here in Kenya and across the African continent. Choosing to buy an item online or in-store, you are choosing to support small businesses, grassroots organizations, and vulnerable communities.

Nairobi’s culinary scene has been on an upward trajectory in recent years, with new eateries, cafes, and bars popping up almost weekly. A metropolitan city with a diverse restaurant culture, Nairobi’s best dining experiences run from roadside food stalls to five-star dining establishments. Don’t miss local specialties such as nyama choma (grilled meat, usually goat) and ugali, not to mention African-inspired gourmet burgers! Nairobi’s beautiful year-round weather means this is a prime destination for al fresco dining on rooftops, balconies, and gardens.

The most popular restaurants include The Talisman, Embark, Tamarind Nairobi, The Haandi (also with a London branch) and for the meat-eaters out there, the world-famous Carnivore is a must dine!

kenya trip of a lifetime

Lewa is a 45,000-acre private game ranch located 30 miles north of the equator at the foothills of Mt. Kenya and is home to the world-famous Lewa Wildlife Conservancy. There are very few private houses and camps on the reserve so game viewing is as exclusive as it can get. The area is probably one of the best in Africa for viewing rhinos. The reserve not only has the Big 5 but the largest population of the rare Grevy’s zebra as well as other rare northern species. There are many activities to engage in, including horseback riding, scenic flights, night drives, walking safaris, camel riding, and photographic hides.

The conservancy is a groundbreaking example of conservation in action and community participation. The family who started it, the Craigs, has been instrumental in educating and assisting local communities stretching away to the north about the value and benefit of securing land for wildlife. Their approach has included community support projects such as schools, clinics, and water management. Lewa is also the setting for the Lewa Marathon, a notorious run-on dirt trails amongst herds of wild animals.

Property Overview

Lewa Safari Camp has a stunning location within the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, with outstanding game viewing from the camp, and views of Mount Kenya to the south and the arid lowlands to the north. Each tent has a thatched roof, verandah, and full en-suite bathrooms, very much in the ‘Lewa’ style. The central areas have vibrant gardens filled with birds, a sunny verandah and a swimming pool to enjoy during the day and cozy log fires in the lounge and dining room for chilly evenings.

The camp is based within the private 251km2 wildlife conservancy, home to over 10% of Kenya’s black rhino population, and the single largest population of Grevy’s zebra in the world. Lewa reinvests all the profits generated from tourism into its core programs. When you visit Lewa Safari Camp, you contribute to helping thousands of people from different backgrounds and cultures to improve their lives and give their children a future, at the same time ensuring Africa’s wildlife has a stable home.

Experience & Activities

The Lewa Safari Camp guides are based in camp within Lewa Wildlife Conservancy. Most are from the neighboring communities and have been guiding within the conservancy for many years, some for over 15 years. All the guides are first class, with Bronze or Silver level Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association certification, and they also receive training directly from the Conservancy to the “Lewa Standard.”

Another walking option is to visit Ngare Ndare forest conservancy. This is a community conservancy to the south of Lewa. There is a canopy walk and river to play in. There are usually elephants in the forest, so you will be escorted by the Lewa walking guide. Additionally, Lewa Safari Camp offers evening horse rides – you can get very close to the plains game as they see you as one of their own! “Sundowners” are a safari tradition – after a day of safari, stop, and watch the spectacular sunset, traditionally with a gin and tonic in hand! There are also visits available to the local Samburu homesteads.

kenya trip of a lifetime

Samburu is a 165 km2 (63 mi2) national reserve situated 350 km (217 mi) north of Nairobi at an altitude of 800 to 1,230m (2,625 - 4,000 ft). At the heart of the reserve, flowing through doum palm groves and the thick riverine forest is the picturesque Ewaso Nyiro River, without whose waters the game could not survive in this arid region. Samburu is home to one of Kenya’s largest elephant populations and several well-known research projects on carnivores, lions, and elephants. Four of the Big Five can be found and, though no rhinos are present, it is considered an excellent place to look for leopards, lions, and elephants. The game reserve sits in the shadow of the sacred mountain Ol Doinyo Sabachae and is home to the Nilotic Samburu people. The Samburu are known for their nomadic pastoralist lifestyle, much like their relatives the Maasai, as well as their glamorous beadwork and colorful shukas.

Elephant Bedroom Camp

Set on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River in Samburu National Reserve surrounded by doum palms and other beautiful indigenous trees and shrubs sits this small and exclusive camp of 14 luxury tents—all furnished in rustic African style while offering all the comforts expected of a luxury Camp (hot & cold running water, electricity, and herbal products).

The lounge and dining area offer vibrant safari colors with original oil paintings, and soft intimate lighting designed to relax guest after returning from an exciting game drive. Huge herds of elephants, prides of lions, or the solitary leopard amongst other game are regular visitors around the camp providing excellent game viewing in the spectacular scenic background of rugged rolling hills.

Elephant Bedroom Camp is an intimate tented camp with simplistic elegance, luxury, and style providing an astonishing safari experience. Exciting activities include safaris with accredited professional safari guides, guided bush walks, day game drives, bush breakfast/dinner, picnic lunches, sundowners, cultural visits, lectures on Samburu culture, and entertainment by local Samburu warriors.

kenya trip of a lifetime

The Mara conservancies are Maasai-owned group ranches that have combined to conserve a total area nearly the size of the Maasai Mara National Reserve itself, covering 1450 km2 (560 mi2) across fifteen conservancies. The wildlife in the conservancies can be comparable to the main Maasai Mara game reserve, and in fact, some areas have higher densities of predators than in the central reserve. Because there are fewer camps, the conservancies can offer a more exclusive experience than in the central reserve, with generally fewer game viewing vehicles around sightings.

There are opportunities in some conservancies to do night drives, walking safaris, as well as visits to some of the villages of the local Maasai who own the land.

The conservancy approach is widely seen as the way forward for wildlife conservation and eco-tourism in Kenya because it not only secures vital space for wildlife but includes the local population as custodians of their national heritage. This has been vital not only for the conservation of the whole greater Mara but also for wildlife corridors and the prosperity of many hundreds of Maasai families. Nearly forty tourist camps contribute to employment amongst the communities and provide a presence, alongside Maasai anti-poaching units, for the protection of the wildlife.

Elewana Elephant Pepper Camp

Elephant Pepper Camp is one of Kenya’s original, very small, and exclusive tented camps, located away from other lodges in the pristine Mara North Conservancy. For those wanting to step off the world for a while and lose themselves in unspoiled nature in the heart of the Kenyan bush, Elephant Pepper Camp is the perfect place to indulge this whim and explore the marvels of the natural world.

Nestled in a lush thicket of Elephant Pepper trees overlooking open grasslands frequented by herds of game, Elephant Pepper Camp maintains the rustic luxury and authenticity of a traditional safari from yesteryear.

Nothing rivals sitting around the campfire listening to the sounds of the African night. Enjoying extended game drives with our highly knowledgeable and qualified guides, guests participate in the most unique wildlife experience in the world.

Elephant Pepper Camp brings people to the heart of the wilderness—no traffic, no permanent structures, just the sights and sounds of the African bush.

Activities include shared game drives in custom 4x4 vehicles (exclusive use available at a day rate), pre-dinner drinks around the open campfire, night game drives, sundowners, bush breakfasts, and guided bush walks (age restrictions apply to children under 16 yrs). Balloon safaris (price not included and pre-booking required) and cultural visits are also possible as is an optional visit to a local school supported by Land & Life Foundation.

10 Bucket List Ideas for Once-in-a-Lifetime Trips

bucket list trips 2020

Every traveller has their own ideas for bucket list trips of a lifetime consisting of “must see places before I die”. The team at Odyssey Tours and Travels have put together one such list of ten once in a lifetime trips. It features a diverse range of experiences and adventures from taking a cruise to Antarctica to diving in the Great Barrier Reef  or trekking the Inca Trail at Machu Picchu.

Table of Contents

1. cruise to antarctica from ushuaia, argentina, 2. inca trail trek at machu picchu, peru, 3. sail the greek islands, 4. northern lights and norwegian fjords, 5. serengeti national park, tanzania and masai mara, kenya, 6. jeep safari from manali to leh, india, 7. golden eagle trans-siberian railway, from moscow to beijing, 8. swim in the dead sea, discover petra in jordan, 9. san diego to san francisco: drive pacific coast highway no. 1, 10. scuba diving in the great barrier reef, australia, bucket list trips of a lifetime – 10 epic ideas.

Ushuaia is the ultimate heaven’s gate to the least traversed white continent of Antarctica. Famously dubbed as the end-of-the-world, Ushuaia is the southernmost city on the planet, situated at the southernmost tip of Argentina. It’s at a hopping distance from the white continent.

Antarctica is a frozen desert of glistening white as far as the vision can penetrate. What is even more magnanimous here are the ice formations, resembling sculpted monoliths – call it nature’s own art. See whales, seals and sea birds worthy of seafaring poems. Rare animal encounters and opportunities found nowhere else, but here. This is ultimate exploration. Nature untouched, untapped.

Your Antarctica cruise tour can last anywhere from eight to fifteen days, circumnavigating through the glacier rises and islands like Cape Horn, Georgia’s and The Falklands. You can reach Ushuaia by following our Patagonia backpacking route to its conclusion, which covers the best natural wonders in Argentina and Chile. There are also direct flights from Buenos Aires.

Our next once-in-a-lifetime experience is the world famous Inca Trail trek at Machu Picchu which is an archaeological wonder and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Because of the curious ruins all along the trek route, there is a sheer sense of mystery and awe for anyone who follows it all the way to the summit.

At the fascinating city of Cuzco, one must halt for acclimatisation as the oxygen levels here repress drastically. The Inca Trail is an uphill trek that leads above 3000 metres, the highest point being at 4200 metres above sea level. The best time to take this trek is from April to October, with peak months being from June to August.

One of the most pocket-friendly yet beautiful places in Europe, the Greek Islands are perfect whether you want to relax, party or adventure. If sapphire blue waters woo you and beaches entice you, served with drop-dead gorgeous sunset views in the background then head off travelling around the Greek Islands .

The aquatic charm here is more than one can ask for, so much so that you may be baffled by the enormous range of prospects to choose from. A few popular islands are Santorini (a Honeymoon favourite), Crete (a trekker’s paradise), Mykonos (most vibrant and lively place for nightlife and beaches), Corfu (medieval architecture, a UNESCO world heritage site) and Rhodes (buzzing with cultural alibi along with scenic beauty).

Possibly the most fascinating natural wonder Mother Nature has to offer, Aurora Borealis (the Northern Lights) are a magnificent spectacle to behold. When you personally experience this truly once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, you‘ll know it is a moment of sheer mysticism and will be at awe at the beauty of sheer nature.

The display of the Northern Lights can be spotted all over Norway and in some other Scandinavian countries, but the surest place to catch them is up in the north, near the Arctic Circle. Catching just a glimpse of them is high on many a travel bucket list.

The other factor that makes Norway a part of this countdown is the unrivalled beauty of the Fjords here. You can go skiing, hiking and camping, in the high rises of them.

These two places are one big National Wildlife Reserve, except for the fact that in Tanzania, it is called Serengeti while in neighbouring Kenya the reserve is known as Masai Mara. This mammoth reservoir of extraordinary animal and bird species is flocked by thousands of people every year for scientific, ecological and adventurous reasons. The site is a major crowd-puller during the migration hours of the wildebeest and zebras from October to November (period of short rains) and from April to June (period of long, heavy rains).

For its habitats of diverse wildlife, this place is a perfect setting for wild safari adventures and getting up close and personal with some of the deadliest predators in the world like cheetahs and lions. The Mara River in Kenya is a hotbed for ruthless killers like crocodiles. The landscape exhibits varied topographies from lush grasslands and woodlands to sparse bushes and barren sands. You also have the pleasure of viewing the entire landscape from up above in a Hot Air Balloon safari.

For another African adventure, consider backpacking Morocco and heading into the Sahara Desert – another of the world’s great natural spectacles.

Manali is a popular hill station in Himachal, especially in summers, known for its cool weather and snow-clad peaks. With the Himalayas as the backdrop, Manali is a paradise for adrenaline junkies who enjoy daredevil sports like river-rafting, paragliding and rock-climbing.

Leh, capital of Ladakh, lies in the land dubbed as heaven itself – Jammu and Kashmir. Leh has been featured in many Bollywood movies and though temperatures here are low, the absolute warmth of the locals  will keep you heated up.

The linking factor between these places is the Leh-Manali Highway where you can enjoy the serene natural beauty en-route. The route is roughly 490 km and elevates to 4000 metres. It goes piercing through hilly regions on both sides. You will have ample opportunities to take photographic breaks with the breathtaking rock formations on-route. Glacier peaks with flowing streams get immediately swapped for abandoned and arid lands once you cross the Rohtang Pass. Yet even those barren landscapes seem soothing to the eyes. A brief route outline entails: Manali – Rohtang Pass – Keylong – Jispa – Sarchu – Gata Loops – Tanglang La – Leh.

There is mainly camping accommodation available on route and a typical journey takes 3 days with two overnight stops in Keylong and Sarchu. These breaks are recommended to better prepare yourself for altitude sickness.

The Trans-Siberian Express stretches  6,850 miles (11,024 km). From Moscow up until Vladivostok, the route covers the width of the enormous Russian nation and also features dives into Mongolia and China.

In Russia, you can take in sites like the Red Square, St. Basil’s Cathedral, the Kremlin and Lenin Square. Irkutsk, hailed as the ‘Paris of Siberia’ and Lake Baikal, known as ‘The Pearl of Siberia’ are also on the route. The train takes roughly 15 days to cover the enormous distance but you can of course get off at various points along the route. It’s not so much the destination but rather the journey that sees this trip rise high on many a travel bucket list checklist.

Once in a Lifetime Trips

Dead Sea, Jordan , CC BY 2.0

The Dead Sea is the lowest point in the world – 394.6 m below sea-level. It is called the Dead Sea because of the excess salt levels in the sea which make it effortless to float. This salt lake has Jordan bordering its eastern line and Israel and Palestine on the western front.

If you do visit this Sea, you will be thoroughly rewarded therapeutically and cosmetically. The mud along the sea is said to contain many minerals that act as skin-enriching tools. Tourists covered in dark mud are a common sight here. As souvenirs you can take home beautiful salt crystals and formations found lying on the shore, just like sea-shells. It’s a personal time of relaxing, of giving some physical and mental respite to your body.

Nearby Petra, one of the best historical sites in the Middle East , is literally carved out of rock and known as the Rose City, because of the rosy-pink colour that the rock exhibits here. The city is full of monasteries and alter-like structures, and is most definitely one of the world’s greatest archaeological sites. If you’ve read the Old Testament from the Bible, you’ll be fascinated to encounter the exact same sites mentioned there. Surprisingly, you are allowed to get around the city in only two ways. Either your own feet or those of horses, donkeys and camels.

The Pacific Coast Highway is the second most famous highway in America. En route from San Diego to San Francisco , there are plenty of attractions and great stops to choose from. Starting from San Diego County you go through beautiful Orange County before hitting the giant metropolis of Los Angeles and then venturing further north towards San Francisco (or vice-versa).

Midway through the route after crossing the Carmel Highlands you are greeted by the famous Big Sur. The coastline is suddenly more elevated and you are welcomed by red grooves kissing the sky and ragged rocks slashed by fierce waters.

Located past the Pacific Coast of Queensland, a dive in the Great Barrier Reef is pure bliss. This place is home to some of the most exotic marine flora and fauna in the world. Cairns, a cosmopolitan city, is the base to plan your scuba diving trip to the reefs and ranks among the top destinations in Australia – one of the world’s most popular backpacking countries .

The Great Barrier Reef is one of the most accessible dive regions and an easy-to-accomplish one. This is pretty much a snorkeler’s Shangri-La. You don’t need to be an expert at diving to experience it– local dive operators provide overall training and guides help you along every step of the way. Many petit islands are scattered in the nearby bay and you can stay overnight on any of the islands.

It’s also very easy to connect from here to a spell backpacking New Zealand , which is home to many more travel bucket list worthy natural wonders.

At Indagare, we’re always dreaming of our next adventure (and fondly remembering previous ones). This year, again, planning ahead feels challenging in an unpredictable world. Still, we’re dusting off our proverbial travel wish lists with a renewed sense of wanderlust.

Where in the world can measure up to the lofty hopes of a 2022 traveler? Read on for our list of 23 destinations on our minds now for sensational journeys, from the silent steppes of Mongolia to the cosmopolitan bustle of Mexico City. And while some of these destinations are still closed to international arrivals, or are currently experiencing a surge in Covid, planning early can help ensure you have the best experience possible as soon as you’re able.

An Epic Safari in Kenya

An African safari is one of the most thrilling trips for wildlife lovers. One destination that’s reemerged as a favorite for Indagare is Kenya . The birthplace of the modern safari, which translates to “journey” in Swahili, Kenya has inspired generations of visitors. Expect the quintessential, pulled-from-a-movie East African landscapes (films like Out of Africa and even The Lion King are set here)—but also snow-capped mountains, arid deserts lush coastlines, with plentiful wildlife experiences that incorporate big game (and the Great Migration) plus exotic birdlife. But a visit to Kenya is so much more than a nature trip. Known as the “cradle of humanity,” this is where some of the earliest humans walked. And today, it’s home to a diverse culture of more than 40 distinct ethnic groups and the cosmopolitan hub of Nairobi.

Ideal length of stay: Seven days

The Quintessential South Pacific Sojourn in Fiji

This South Pacific archipelago—with more than 800 islands and islets, of which just over 100 are inhabited—is a dream destination for experiencing far-flung tropical beauty. Visitors to Fiji can explore its jungles (the country ranks near the top for its forest integrity) and go on multi-island sailing excursions. And for the ultimate Fijian getaway, COMO Laucala Island is a five-square-mile private-island retreat. Guests at its 25 bungalows enjoy myriad water and land activities, including access to a mini-submarine and an America’s Cup racing yacht—as well as the postcard-perfect beaches that surround the lush, hilly island.

Ideal length of stay: Five days

The Eternal French Connection

Whether you’ve never set foot there, or—like many Indagare members and many on our team—you usually go every year, it’s impossible to ignore the allure of France . Paris is a global capital for culture, fashion and food, and travelers could have a “trip of a lifetime” simply by exploring its multifaceted arrondissements for days on end. The rest of the country calls, too. We love adding in time along the French Riviera along with wine tastings and chateaux visits in Bordeaux and the Loire Valley .

Ideal length of stay: 10 days

Into the Wild in Alaska

The 49th State is another of the world’s great ecological masterpieces, with hundreds of thousands of square miles of protected wilderness. What’s in store: glacier-capped mountain ranges, vast tundras, rushing rivers and blankets of boreal forests, all home to elk, moose, caribou, brown bear, wolves and more. Indagare’s favorite Alaska lodges each give guests prime access to explore the untamed terrain, be it by foot, helicopter, horseback or bike. A top destination for fly-fishing, skiing and hiking, Alaska always brings the adventure.

The Magic of Morocco

has long been a treasured destination for both Indagare staff and members. It is a country of dramatic contrasts: the dunes of the Sahara Desert, the snow-capped peaks of the Atlas Mountains and the seductive allure of cities like Marrakech , Tangier and Fez . Visitors here can spend days wandering through centuries-old medinas, browsing the souks and spice markets, exploring secret oasis-like gardens, and marveling at the Moorish architecture and sublime natural setting. Another plus: Morocco is home to some of Indagare’s favorite hotels in the world, including glamorous palatial retreats and soulful riad boutiques.

Ideal length of stay: Five to 10 days

Slovenia, Europe’s Secret Gem

Tucked between the Alps and the Adriatic, Slovenia is a fascinating melting pot of cultures and traditions. It shares the same physical beauty (and much of the history) of its neighbors Italy, Croatia, Austria and Hungary, yet receives just a fraction of the visitors—and has an energetic spirit all its own. What’s in store: a verdant Adriatic coastline, historic cities with imperial grandeur, the towering Julian Alps, picture-postcard castles and the rolling Brda winelands (which happen to produce excellent vintages).

Ideal length of stay: Six days

Venturing to Antarctica in its Natural State

The White Continent, with a population of scientific researchers and penguins, is one of the most remote destinations a traveler can experience. Since it’s regulated by international law, overtourism—for now—is a non-issue. Climate Change, unfortunately, is still a major concern, and Antarctica is one of the places on earth where its effects, both current and potential, are most worrying. That added urgency has led a clutch of responsible travel outfitters to offer sustainable adventures there, hoping visitors will become entranced by Antarctica’s rugged, icy beauty and double down on their efforts to preserve it for future generations. That was the case for Colin Heinrich, Indagare’s Impact Manager. Read his essay on visiting Antarctica,  here .

Ideal length of stay: 10 days round-trip cruising.

Culture & Cuisine in Japan

A country at once steeped in tradition and driven by an embrace of the future. One of the world’s most beloved cuisines. Glass and steel high-rises overlooking historic temples, with Mount Fuji rising in the distance. Japan checks all the boxes for travelers in search of cultural stimulation. And while we weren’t able to attend the Olympics this year, it’s still possible to look ahead to future visits. A comprehensive journey here includes time in Tokyo (the world’s largest metropolis), Kyoto (famed for its temples), the monuments at Hiroshima and Mount Fuji, with overnights at soothing ryokans.

Ideal length of stay: 14 days

The Best of Italy

The ideal Italian visit has so many permutations: Rome to Florence to Venice ; the Amalfi Coast and Capri ; the countryside of Tuscany plus Milan and Lake Como or the Dolomites ; Puglia and Sicily ....The options and combinations are endless, each with one hand full of pros and not a single con in the other. One thing to keep in mind when considering your Italy wishlist: balancing culture-heavy days in its historic towns and cities with time spent simply being in Italy. That could mean meandering the ancient streets of those same cities, or venturing into the country, coasts or mountains. La dolce vita is real. Contact your Trip Designer for help with planning a trip that best suits your interests and preferences.

Multilayered Discoveries in Cambodia

Some of the world's most impressive ruins complexes, coupled with a deeply spiritual society and a complicated history make Cambodia a treasured big ticket trip for Indagare members. An itinerary here combines stops in Siem Reap , near the incredible Angkor complex , as well as to Phnom Penh , the country's buzzing, artsy capital city with must-visit memorials and museums devoted to the not-so-distant past of the Khmer Rouge regime. And along the coast, tropical islands shelter luxurious and soul-enriching retreats.

The Northern Lights in Scandinavia

No place can guarantee seeing nature’s greatest light show, but the northern reaches of Scandinavia have a stellar track record—along with some of Indagare’s favorite polar properties. During the winter months, days are short, but filled with activities like snowshoeing, dog-sledding and cross-country skiing. And come sunset—as early as 2:00 p.m. in some spots—there’s the magic of anticipation, as travelers await the aurora borealis dancing across the night sky. Indagare Tip: We love combining trips to Northern Scandinavia (including in Norway as well as Finnish and Swedish Lapland ) with stops in the region’s southern cities, like Oslo , Stockholm and Helsinki .

Ideal length of stay: Six to 10 days, to maximize chances of seeing the Lights

Cultural & Style Overload in Mexico City

Few places inspire and ignite the senses like Mexico City —the oldest capital in the Americas, one of the world’s most populous cities and a favorite urban getaway for Indagare members. Recent decades have brought a modern renaissance that celebrates both Mexico’s cultural heritage and its contemporary innovations. The city is home to a staggering collection of must-see museums and galleries, high-design shops and a globally renowned food scene that includes some of the most-lauded fine-dining restaurants and street food alike. Overwhelming in size and scope, Mexico City lures travelers for multiple visits, so they can discover the city’s many layers.

Ideal length of stay: Six to eight days

A Spiritual Hiking Retreat in Bhutan

Deep in the Himalayas, Bhutan ’s allure is twofold: its fascinating culture which remains proudly distinctive thanks to centuries of isolation—shut off from the world by geography—and its jaw-dropping mountainscapes. Ideal visits here include stops in several valleys, heading on daily hikes through the foothills to see Buddhist temples, monasteries and shrines, including the iconic Tiger’s Nest, and staying at chic, soulful mountain lodges along the way. Indagare can help you determine which lodge combination is right for you, based on your interests and needs.

Time-Traveling Through Egypt

Few destinations allow travelers to feel the weight of history so tangibly as Egypt. Its sheer span of existence boggles the mind: Cleopatra’s reign is closer in years to the moon landing than to the construction of the pyramids at Giza. The country is also home to more than one third of all the world's antiquities, and archaeologists keep unearthing more: Last November, Egyptologists announced the discovery of more than 100 near perfectly preserved mummies in Saqqara, and this April, a 3,000-year-old lost city was uncovered near Luxor. By the end of 2022, the highly anticipated and long-delayed Grand Egyptian Museum is finally set to open.

A Soulful Escape in Mongolia

Like Bhutan, Mongolia is a mythic destination. Sprawling over vast steppe plains north of the Gobi Desert, it is the world’s least densely-populated country. Outside of the capital, Ulaanbaatar, it feels—and largely is—empty, with few people, structures or even trees. It is precisely this sense of isolation that attracts travelers. Visitors here can experience true silence and stillness, while also encountering a rich cultural legacy that maintains its traditions passed down over centuries.

Evolution on View in the Galápagos

Charles Darwin helped put the Galápagos on the traveler’s map when he published On the Origin of Species in 1859. More than 150 years later, this isolated volcanic archipelago in the Pacific, now part of Ecuador, still attracts naturalists and nature lovers who want an immersive wildlife experience. Endemic highlights include marine iguanas, Galápagos penguins, and the Galápagos tortoise. Visitors can set up a home base on one of the islands, or island-hop via a charter yacht or scheduled sailing.

Peru: Machu Picchu & Beyond

features prominently in many jetsetter’s travel dreams. The mountaintop ruins, which date to the 1450s, are often the main draw, and many Indagare members have enjoyed both hiking the Inca Trail or taking the fabulous Hiram Bingham train from Belmond to get there. But  Peru is so much more than the—admittedly jaw-dropping—UNESCO World Heritage Site. Not only are there lesser-frequented Inca ruins throughout the Sacred Valley , but there are fascinating cities like Cusco and the too-often ignored Lima , a rising mecca for gourmands. Plus, travelers can venture into the headwaters of the Amazon and swim in Lake Titicaca.

Ideal length of stay: Seven days for Lima, Cusco and Machu Picchu; longer for additional exploring.

The Multiple Worlds of Chile

Spanning barely 200 miles at its widest point, yet extending 2,600 miles north to south, Chile is an enigma. In the high-altitude Atacama Desert , salt flats and Mars-like red dunes meet the Andes; along the coast, visitors can find some of South America’s most fabulous beaches and colorful fishing towns; Patagonia is a lush wilderness of rolling mountains, fjords and glaciers; and Santiago de Chile is one of the world’s most modern metropolises, with some of the tallest peaks of the Andes forming a backdrop to its skyline of highrises. The perfect trip here relishes these distinctive regions, and sees travelers embarking on a comprehensive tour through the country—with the option to add in Easter Island or Argentina’s wine country in Mendoza .

Cultural Resilience and Great Ape Encounters in Rwanda

We share around 96 and 98 percent of our DNA with gorillas and chimpanzees, respectively, and seeing them in their natural habitat is a life goal for many in the Indagare community. The experience involves trekking from one of Rwanda ’s lodges into national parks, where the endangered gorillas and chimpanzees go about their social lives hidden in the dense mountain forests. What many travelers don’t know is that the journey plays a crucial role in protecting gorillas and chimps. Visits help fund critical conservation efforts, as well as continue to divert local economies and communities away from illegal poaching towards more sustainable practices. But a visit to Rwanda should always include Kigali, not just for a sobering visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial (a must), but also for a look at Rwanda today. The people of Rwanda continue to open their hearts to outsiders, sharing their own stories from the horrors of 1994 and the years after, as they came together over a shared mission: lasting, meaningful peace. Indagare’s favorite itineraries combine jungle and city, using the country’s top guides and stopping at the best hotels, art galleries, shops and restaurants.

Following the Ancients in Greece

Like Egypt, Greece holds a special place in the hearts of history lovers. Athens , of course, is a must, both for its incredible ruins in and around the city, and for its laid-back, cosmopolitan energy. But even the contemporary beach destinations have ties to the past.  Mykonos  is the best home base for visiting Delos, one of the most powerful trading cities in the Ancient Mediterranean, and mythological birthplace of twin gods Apollo and Artemis. Santorini , meanwhile, is potentially the site of the lost city of Atlantis. Visits to the ruins of Delphi and Olympus on the Peloponnese, as well as of Knossos on Crete , can all be combined with fabulous resort stays. Not sure where to start? Our team helps you figure out which sites—ancient or otherwise—are the best match for your trip, and can craft a customized itinerary around your wishes.

Safari, Wine, Art & Surf in South Africa

is what Indagare calls a “slam dunk” destination: for almost any type of traveler, the country offers something worth traveling for. And often, that something feels out-of-this-world amazing. Of course, there is some of Africa’s best wildlife-viewing at top lodges and tented camps, from Kruger to KwaZulu-Natal. Beyond the bush, visitors can spend days crisscrossing the lush Winelands, driving along the coastal Garden Route and sightseeing in Johannesburg and Cape Town. The two cities are a study of contrasts: both have become global art hubs, yet they have strikingly different histories and culinary scenes.

Ideal length of stay: Seven to 10 days

Adventure Overdrive in New Zealand

popularized New Zealand back in the early 2000s, cementing it as one of the world’s most visually stunning destinations. Two decades later—and more than a year since we’ve been able to visit—the country is still on our minds. It tops the wish list for many adventurers, with heli-skiing, fly-fishing, mountain hiking, and volcano touring all within reach from some of Indagare’s most adored, intimate hotels. First time visitors will want to schedule time on both the North and South islands, with wildly different scenery. The country is still closed to visitors, but we hope to be able to return by 2022.

Note: A backlog of postponed 2020 and 2021 trips makes planning New Zealand particularly challenging. And since the country’s top properties are small in scale, finding availability for a multi-stop trip can be a puzzle. Contact us to discuss options with an Indagare Trip Designer, who can coordinate stays at multiple lodges throughout the country.

A Multi-sensory Journey to India

We are eagerly awaiting a return to India . Its intoxicating, multi-sensory blend of culture, color and cuisine, with a complex history and vibrant contemporary scene make it a perennial favorite destination for many in the Indagare community. The massive country is home to some of the world’s largest and distinctive cities, like Delhi , Agra , Jaipur , Udaipur and Mumbai , and a dream trip here takes its time to explore each one—plus stops in gorgeous parks for spectacular wildlife, including the elusive tiger. And between visits to sites like the Taj Mahal and Hawa Mahal, a day or two should be set aside simply for relaxing on-property at the country’s indulgent palace hotels . We hope to revisit as soon as it is safe to do so. Contact us to discuss future options with an Indagare Trip Designer.

What Virgin Atlantic's New Kenya Airways Partnership Means For Passengers

  • Virgin Atlantic and Kenya Airways' codeshare partnership offers more travel options and frequent flyer benefits for passengers.
  • As SkyTeam alliance members, the partnership enhances travel options from Europe to Africa.
  • Flying Club and Asante Rewards members can enjoy SkyPriority services when traveling through London and Nairobi.

SkyTeam members Virgin Atlantic and Kenya Airways have announced a new codeshare partnership. It offers passengers access to additional destinations and more opportunities to enjoy frequent flyer benefits like SkyPriority.

Enhancing travel options from Europe to Africa

The new codeshare partnership between Kenya Airways and Virgin Atlantic launches today - March 19, 2024. Virgin Atlantic customers will have greater access to Nairobi and other East African destinations, with the option to directly purchase tickets on Kenya Airways' London-Nairobi service. In turn, Kenya Airways customers will be able to connect to several Caribbean destinations served by Virgin via London, including Barbados, The Bahamas, Grenada, and St Vincent and the Grenadines.

Last year, the Kenyan carrier launched an independent frequent flyer program after years of rewarding loyal customers through its partners. Under the new agreement, Virgin Atlantic's Gold and Silver Flying Club members, together with Kenya Airways' Gold and Platinum Asante Rewards members, can enjoy SkyPriority services. Speaking about the partnership, Virgin Atlantic Chief Commercial Officer Juha Jarvinen said,

"We’re delighted to launch our partnership with Kenya Airways. As a fellow member of the SkyTeam alliance, we know our customers will enjoy a seamless travel experience, with more opportunities to earn and spend their miles with increased benefits for our SkyPriority members."

SkyPriority services, including priority check-in, baggage handling, and boarding, will be available at both airlines' hubs at London Heathrow (LHR) and Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta (NBO) . Virgin is the only UK-based carrier to codeshare on the Heathrow-Nairobi route, providing its customers greater flexibility and travel options.

A partnership between two SkyTeam members

Virgin Atlantic has been a SkyTeam member for just over a year. It joined the alliance on March 2, 2023 , becoming the 19th member and the only UK airline. On the other hand, Kenya Airways has been a SkyTeam member since September 2007 and remains the only African carrier in the alliance.

The British and Kenyan airlines' SkyTeam membership has allowed Virgin's Flying Club members to unlock their rewards faster. There have been opportunities to earn and redeem Virgin Points and Tier Points for the past year. Furthermore, Flying Club members can earn Virgin Points by booking luxury safari getaways through Virgin Atlantic Holidays and Virgin Limited Edition.

"We are excited to embark on this transformative partnership with Virgin Atlantic. By leveraging our complementary strengths and networks, we aim to enrich the travel experience for our valued customers, offering them greater choice, convenience, and connectivity to key destinations in the world," added Kenya Airways Chief Commercial and Customer Officer Julius Thairu.

The Different Ways To Earn Kenya Airways Asante Rewards Points

Recent partnerships with other skyteam members.

On March 17, SkyTeam was named 'Alliance of the Year' in the Air Transport Awards for the second consecutive year. It was recognized for its innovation and unique initiatives like The Sustainable Flight Challenge (TSFC). In May 2023, Kenya Airways participated in the challenge, operating one of Africa's most sustainable flights yet , with a service between Nairobi and Amsterdam.

The new partnership with Virgin comes about a month after Kenya Airways signed codeshare agreements with two other SkyTeam members. On February 22, the Kenyan national carrier renewed its codeshare partnership with Vietnam Airlines to offer passengers seamless connections to destinations like Johannesburg, Cape Town, Dar es Salaam, and Mombasa via Nairobi, as well as Hanoi and Saigon via Bangkok.

Earlier that month, Kenya Airways announced its new codeshare agreement with Spanish carrier Air Europa . It allows Air Europa customers to fly to Nairobi via Amsterdam and Kenya Airways passengers to travel to Madrid, Palma de Mallorca, New York, and Miami. The recently activated codeshare agreements are part of the Kenyan carrier's partnership strategy, which was primarily restored about two years ago.

Sometimes when you see so many 5 star reviews you start to wonder if they are real – these are.  On extremely short notice with some limitations on how we would travel, Raza really put together the trip of a lifetime .  My only complaint is it was too short (our fault). From the moment I emailed him he was incredibly responsive – quickly got me on the phone to hear a little about me and my expectations.  The guide he found was incredible.  Our hotels and experiences were incredible.  It really was one of those trips where the day it is done you just want to relive it.

I think Raza did a good job in timing of days and the corresponding accommodations. We ended at Lake Elmenteita Safari Camp , where the animals were a bit of a yawn after Masai Mara BUT the accommodations were truly out of this world as was the service – including horseback riding and water color painting.  And the views were remarkable – not to be missed.  This was not really a planned trip but I now tell all my friends it is a must do and do it with AfricanMecca Safaris.  Also we were worried about bugs but only got bit in Nairobi .  Don’t let that stop you from this incredible experience.

kenya trip of a lifetime

Just for families

The clue’s in the title. These trips are for families only (including any aunts, uncles or cousins who’d like to come along, of course). As long as you’re traveling with a child under the age of 18, you’re a family in our eyes. Plus, unlike other travel companies, children aged 17 years and younger receive a 10% discount on the price of their trip.

kenya trip of a lifetime

Travel with other families

Traveling the Intrepid way is a bit like traveling with a group of friends. These trips are made up of 3–5 like-minded families, and the kids tend to hit it off straight away, allowing you to enjoy some well-earned R&R. We often find the whole family ends up making friendships with people from all over the world, staying in touch long after the adventure ends.

kenya trip of a lifetime

Small group sizes

Intrepid’s family group sizes are small enough to avoid the crowds and reach some out-of-the-way places but big enough for a good social mix. Our average group size of 10 allows us to hop aboard local boats, buses or trains, eat at friendly, family-run restaurants and kick back in traditional accommodation and homestays.

kenya trip of a lifetime

Action packed

We know the biggest challenge on a family trip is keeping the kids entertained, so we’ve planned in advance. Nearly all of our hotels feature pools, and each day has a great mix of action-packed adventure and flexible free time. Your local leader can also suggest activities based on your kid’s hobbies or school curriculum.

Packed with food and local artisan experiences, you and your kids will get a real taste of Italy while also getting the chance to appreciate the country’s breathtaking coastal scenery and learn about its captivating past.

Where we stay

We take a lot of care in choosing your accommodation and try to avoid the big chain hotels. Your accommodation could be a locally run hotel in Europe, a jungle lodge in Latin America, or a small, family-friendly hotel. No matter where you stay, it will be of good quality and most rooms will feature en suite bathrooms and air conditioning as standard. We also prefer hotels that provide triple or quad rooms and always try to offer adjoining rooms for parents and kids when they are available.

Kenya Signs Deal With Haiti to Send 1,000 Police to Caribbean

The two countries are pushing ahead with the plan despite criticism from Kenyan rights groups and opposition from a Kenyan court.

  • Share full article

Ariel Henry and William Ruto, both wearing suits and ties, clasped hands while other people looked on.

By Abdi Latif Dahir and Declan Walsh

Kenya and Haiti signed a security deal on Friday intended to remove the last major obstacle to the deployment of 1,000 Kenyan police officers to the gang-ravaged Caribbean nation.

President William Ruto of Kenya said that after months of delays the agreement would “enable the fast-tracking” of a security mission that has stirred cautious hopes in Haiti, where violence is escalating, but has drawn sharp criticism from Kenyan rights groups.

The mission, backed by the United Nations and largely financed by the United States, has been on hold since January when a Kenyan court ruled the deployment illegal because Kenya and Haiti had not signed a formal reciprocal agreement.

On Thursday, Prime Minister Ariel Henry of Haiti flew to Kenya to finalize such an agreement — even as violent gangs were rampaging through the streets of his own capital, Port-au-Prince, pressing for his ouster.

The benefits to Kenya of leading a security mission to Haiti, one of the world’s most violent and chaotic nations, are unclear. Kenya’s own police have a poor human rights record and the country faces major security challenges on its own borders, in countries like Somalia and Ethiopia.

But in a statement accompanying Friday’s announcement, Mr. Ruto insisted his country had a “historic duty” to press ahead because “peace in Haiti is good for the world as a whole.”

He did not provide the text of the agreement, nor did he indicate how quickly Kenyan police officers might deploy to Haiti. There was no immediate reaction from Kenya’s High Court, which had insisted on an agreement in its ruling on the deployment.

In Haiti itself, a new round of destabilizing violence highlighted why the United States and other nations are clamoring for an international mission to rescue the island nation from the violent gangs that dominate it — even if many of those nations do not themselves want to commit troops to the effort.

On Thursday, the armed gangs that control much of Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince, launched coordinated attacks they said were intended to overthrow the government while Mr. Henry was traveling in Africa.

At least four police officers were killed in violence that included attacks on the international airport and several police stations. Businesses, government offices and schools were forced to close. Gang members later boasted on social media about the police casualties they had inflicted.

Jimmy Chérizier, a gang leader known as “Barbecue,” said he wanted to prevent Mr. Henry from returning to Haiti. “With our guns and with the Haitian people, we will free the country,” he said in a video message.

Mr. Henry tried to shrug off the threats. Speaking at a university in Nairobi on Friday, he vowed to hold elections as soon as possible to stabilize the country. “We need democratic governance in order to have people to come and invest in Haiti,” he said.

But back home, Haitian gangs appeared to be sending an “intimidation message” to show that they had formed a united front and “can strike simultaneously,” said Diego Da Rin, a Haiti expert with the International Crisis Group.

Kenya announced the mission to Haiti last summer and by October it had been authorized by both the United Nations and the Kenyan parliament. The United States is providing at least $200 million for the mission, and several Caribbean and African nations have pledged troops to bolster the Kenya-led effort.

But Mr. Ruto is proceeding in the face of staunch opposition from Kenyan critics who say the plan is unconstitutional and inappropriate. Human rights groups say the Kenyan police have a long record of human rights abuses and a poor record in fighting terrorism, which they say does not augur well for the Haiti deployment.

But many analysts say the deployment appears to be part of a drive by Mr. Ruto to burnish his global credentials, and to strengthen his alliance with the United States, even as he faces mounting discontent at home over a severe economic downturn.

Mr. Henry came to power following the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse three years ago, which plunged the country into extraordinary levels of chaos. It also prompted many Haitians to abandon their homeland, contributing to a surge of migrants into the United States.

Since Kenya announced it was willing to send security forces last summer, the situation has grown more chaotic. At least 230 people were killed in February alone as gangs battled for control of territory. The rule of law has largely collapsed: Last month, a 13-year-old girl and her father, a voodoo priest, were killed with machetes by gang members.

Days later, a gang opened fire on a crowded minibus after the driver refused to comply with orders at a checkpoint known as a place where criminals seek to extort civilians.

More broadly, the country is on the verge of collapse. Most basic services are not functioning, under pressure from gang violence and a succession of natural disasters. About 45 percent of the population needs food aid to survive, according to the United Nations, which this week appealed for $674 million in humanitarian aid for Haiti.

“I’ve seen things here that I’ve never seen in my life,” Ulrika Richardson, the U.N. chief humanitarian coordinator in Haiti, told reporters on Wednesday.

With Haitian police unable to quell the unrest, Mr. Henry called for international help. Alongside Kenya, the Bahamas, Bangladesh, Barbados, Chad and Benin have pledged troops for the mission, U.N. spokesman Stéphane Dujarric told reporters on Thursday.

But Mr. Henry’s own legitimacy is shaky, and he has faced regular claims to resign or hold new elections. In such tenuous circumstances, it is unclear how much a Kenya-led force might achieve.

While the United States has provided the bulk of the money for the international security mission, a U.N. trust fund for other contributions has received a lackluster response, with about $11 million committed so far, and another $78 million expected soon, Mr. Dujarric said.

Reporting was contributed by David C. Adams in Florida, Emiliano Rodríguez Mega in Mexico City and Andre Paultre in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

A frequent flyer who's racked up over 23 million miles shares the best way to pack for a trip

  • Tom Stuker, who holds a lifetime pass with United, said he only packs the bare necessities.
  • Stuker said he only packs one item of clothing as a backup.
  • He also said that he doesn't bring along pillows or blankets on flights.

Insider Today

A frequent flyer who's racked up more than 23 million points shared the best way to pack for a trip.

Tom Stuker, who works as a car dealership consultant in New Jersey, told The Washington Post that he packs as minimally as possible whenever he travels. Stuker said that he only packs the bare necessities and one backup — and it can't be complicated to clean.

Related stories

"Try to pack light and only use a carry-on. Most places have inexpensive laundromats within walking distance," Stuker told the Post in an earlier interview .

When it comes to packing clothes, Stuker said that he does two things — he rolls some of them and keeps the rest in hangers and plastic garment bags from dry cleaners. The one thing Stuker often packs in his carry-on is a pair of Lululemon pants, which he says works for both business and pleasure.

Toiletries are something Stuker said he doesn't pack that much of, adding that he can buy and replace these items while traveling. Stuker told the Post in the interview that he also doesn't bring along pillows or blankets on flights.

Stuker purchased a lifetime pass with United Airlines for $290,000 in 1990, visiting over 100 countries and racking up millions of miles in the process. United stopped selling the pass in 1994. Stuker and United did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.

Stuker isn't the only frequent flyer who believes in traveling light. A man who's traveled with his family full-time since 2020 said he only packs clothing that matches everything else he brings along. A solo backpacker who's been to 40 countries said that she regularly repeats outfits while traveling.
