I Cracked the Code to the Perfect Travel Outfit

The elusive "perfect travel outfit"—it's something we've discussed, debated, and broken down quite a bit before. What does an effortless yet polished and, above all else, comfy travel outfit really look like, and why does it seem nearly impossible to accomplish ? Non-stretch high-rise jeans are out of the question, no matter how long you're in transit. On the other hand, it's this writer's opinion that wearing straight-up leggings isn't the most stylish option. Though, I'll admit it may be the comfiest.

Plus size travel clothes for women

There are so few reviews of plus-size women’s clothes I thought I would share my experiences.

On my most recent international trip, I had the opportunity to wear these clothes and thought they worked well on the trip.

I have been using these brands for a few years and have traveled domestically, for which they worked fine. But things are always a bit different when I go abroad.

Universal Standard clothing. Their liquid jersey tops, knit skirts, and underwear are great for travel. These were amazing. They wrinkle easily, but when I hang them up overnight, most of the wrinkles fall out. The underwear is comfortable and dries quickly. They carry sizes 00-40. The clothes are expensive, so I typically wait for a sale. https://www.universalstandard.com

Snag tights. I discovered them a few years ago, and they are the best tights I have ever worn. They have a range of thicknesses, as well as wool tights for the winter. I have worn their leggings/tights in summer and winter. I like to wear leggings for summer travel because my skin is easily irritated, and it is a way of protecting my legs. https://snagtights.us

The company has started to expand to include knit skirts, which I also wore on the trip and was very happy with. I wear leggings in the summer and tights in the winter. They held up well walking all day. They also have a wide range of sizes, similar to the US above. (They also have bras & underwear, but I have not tried them.) The price is a deal, as I have not found this quality at this price. One caveat, they are located in Scotland, so the order has to go through customs. I recommend keeping the cost of the order under $150; otherwise, there are weird customs issues in the US.

Evelyn & Bobbie bras. These don’t have quite the upper-size range of the other two shops, but their bras are well made, and if one removes the pads (which is easy to do), they wash and dry easily. They are a bit pricey, but I think they are worth it. https://evelynbobbie.com

I'm not familiar with Universal Standard. Have you tried their Tee Rex? I like that it is a cotton/modal blend. My workhorse tees from Land's End are that fabric combo but they've gone away from the modal tees (which dry quickly) to 100% cotton which do not dry overnight. My current travel tees are years old and I am afraid they do not have many more trips in them!

I usually wear the Gloria Vanderbilt Amanda jeans at home and for travel. I can order the plus sizes from Costco and they are way less than store prices. The last trip I did to Italy I took the 32 degree knit pull on pants from Costco. They are very inexpensive so are good for a couple of trips and then start to pill.

For the Fall trip I also splashed out and got the LLBean Vista camp capris as I knew it might be hot and they are lightweight. I liked the fit (runs small) and that they dried well but when I got back home and washed them in the machine I realized they had pilled in the crotch. I'm not spending $80 for pants where the fabric doesn't hold up. OK with spending $12.99 or whatever and it pills. NOT OK with $80!

Bras - just take my normal ones, nothing "travel special" about them.

Shirts - Lands End Supima cotton polos. Lighter weight than the mesh polos. Not sure how long one would take to air-dry.

Socks - a synthetic blend from Target. They usually air dry overnight.

Pants - still looking for a quick-dry alternative to cotton blend pants and jeans. And I want pants. Not capris, not leggings, not ankle pants, not joggers. And deep pockets would be great. Why don't they make women's pants with deep pockets like men's???

I do like the US Tee Rex shirt. It fits well. They have a promotion where you can get a free shirt (well, pay for shipping only) if you want to try it out (but for everything else, wait for the sales).

Unfortunately, none of the mentioned brands are really plus-sized, particularly in pants. I have moved to these brands to make it easier to find comfortable, stylish plus sizes.

I like Alder pants--they come in plus sizes. (Alderapparel.com) Alder is a small company so sadly few sales. I have not tried the skirt, dress, fleece or Ts. But the pants wear well and do not need to be laundered often. I have not sink washed them yet but believe that they would dry quickly. I also like Duluth's NoGA pants which also wear well and do not need to be laundered often. Have only noticed pilling on the NoGA pants that have been worn and washed for many years so those have been relegated to wearing only at home now. I do have a newer pair ready to go into rotation. I wear either Duluth undies which dry quickly or Merino Country wool undies which also dry quickly. Do not wear bras often as they hurt my scars from breast cancer so I usually skip those (sorry for the TMI) so I cannot really help with those.

I’ve not tried Alder. There is a brick and mortar Duluth Trading Post just across the state line from me but I’ve never stopped there. I keep saying I’m going to!

Mariam, all the brands I’ve listed come in plus sizes. I saw the offer for the free Tee Rex so maybe I’ll try them.

I also forgot Coolibar UPF clothing which has extended sizes into the Plus range. I got a hooded zip front jacket on sale recently from them although it’s too lightweight to wear right now. The initial wash and dry was fine. Seems generously sized. I will probably order some SS tees from them when their spring colors come out.

The T-Rex is a good shirt. I have two black and 1 grey that I wear all the time. Woolx makes true plus size Merino clothes (not just a 16 or 18-- I'm looking at you Smartwool). I'm a size 20-22 so get frustrated when clothing companies advertise their plus sized lines and then the sizes go up to a 16 or 18. I have a midweight merino long sleeve shirt and a lightweight merino t shirt from them. I also just bought a lightweight merino hoodie that is going to be perfect for layering on an upcoming trip to Portugal. I am wearing Duluth Flexpedition bootcut pants in navy as I type this. Wore them on a trip to Ireland last spring where I got soaked on the top of Dun Aonghasa, but the wind was so strong that they were dry by the time we got back down from the fort. Just ordered a pair in black for my next trip. My Ex Officio undies will last probably another trip or two, but might replace them with the other options listed above.

Try Chico’s; sizing is a little difficult to get used to…. The Zenergy label and Travelers label offer some durable, different weighted coordinated outfits. I’ve found that I sometimes need to buy 2 sizes and return the one that doesn’t fit. The Neema style under Zenergy has very quick dry, light clothes, minimal wrinkling even when hand washed, perfect for carry on travelers. The entire outfits can be a little pricey, but not much higher than mentioned. They do go on sale so keep an eye on the website or app.

I usually order the Men's Lands End Polos in Tall. I like that the length covers my backside. Just wish they had more colors.

One issue with cotton is dark colors bleeding in the wash. If you are doing machine washing for more than 1 person, you can probably make a full load of lights and another of darks however often. But with just 1, the entire suitcase probably takes only a small load, so separating lights and darks for $X per load is something to consider. I have 2 pairs of jeans that bleed heavily in the wash even after 3-4 years. Even in the first wash I did with them with other darks, they bled into the others. Luckily the others didn't stay "bled into". I washed them again with a "color-catcher" sheet and they were fine. I'm going to have to test the real effectiveness of the "color-catcher" sheets with a white cotton something and the "bloody" jeans.

Universal Standard pants seem to run long. And they have tall versions of their pants. If you check out the details, they give exact specs for each item of clothing. So you should be able to find out the inseam for the pants you are interested in. Also, they show you realistic models of what many of the clothes look like.

I have purchased their clothes, and they work and come in a wide range of sizes, but the quality is so poor. I am always frustrated.

This brings up another question. Has anyone ever seen a skort with full leggings instead of shorts under the skirt? During the summer, I really need coverage of leggings to keep the sun off my legs.

You can buy stretchy leggings or armsleeves that you can pull on or off anytime. I use the arm sleeves so as not to get too much sun when I exercise outside. I also brought them with me in Spain to pull on with my t-shirt when the weather got cool. You can find them on Amazon.

Yes, this seems to be an issue lately. Not so much in the past.

They used to offer their standard elastic waist pants in corduroy, but then they started making them for folks with VERY wide waists and VERY narrow legs >> An Apple on toothpicks. I couldn't sit in them because the legs were so tight and the waist was at least 10-inches too big. Haven't ordered them in several years.

I always try on every item and check all the seams, pockets, etc. Just because the blue one fits doesn't mean the red one will. And the seams may be fine in the purple, but not the pink. Not just WW, but every brand.

They also don't bother matching the stripes/plaid in seams. This is a personal pet-peeve. Even high-end brands don't bother matching the pattern at the seams! Just tacky.

@funpig…I use sun sleeves all summer. I like the ones from Outdoor Research which will stay up. Coolibar also has them as well as shorter sun gloves which I wear when driving. There is a company called Farmers Defense that has wonderful prints for sunsleeves but I have not ordered any so not sure of the fit or quality. But, wow, are they cute!

In Australia, you can buy these from modest clothing stores aimed at the Islamic market.

I just put a skirt on over my leggings. Makes washing easier as I just wash the leggings after every wear while the skirt gets worn multiple times before washing.

While style, fashion and taste are subjective, I've noticed that there's more options available now for larger-sized women.

One brand that stands-out is The North Face , they've got quite a bit in both outerwear and sportswear, which much can be translated into travel usage.

All of my clothes are black or dark colors, so I fixed that problem! :)

Any chance you know of anybody that sells petite plus swim suits? I’m rather short waisted but busty. In standard plus size swim suits, if I buy to fit my top, my bottom is quite baggy. LandsEnd used to carry them, but when I chatted with customer service, they tried to tell me they’d never carried them. Grrrr, again.

I buy my swimsuits from swimsuitsforall.com. They are part of the women within group. They fit, but be warned, they are low quality. I buy them because they are one of the few that carry the "racer-back" style in my size. Overall I find they fit well. They just don't last much beyond a season.

I am short waisted and bottom heavy so if it fits in the bottom it's way too big in the top. I buy separates - crop top and swim bottoms - in different sizes. I know lots of people who do this.

Dry on the Fly pants from Duluth Trading are quick drying, just like the name claims😀. I have some that are long, full length pants that can also roll to capri length if desired. Good pockets too. In fact all of the pants I’ve ever gotten from Duluth have nice deep pockets, including their jeans. I think it’s one of their selling points. They do have plus sizes, as previously mentioned.

Plus size here! I love Universal Standard, but like you said, they can be pricey. I am a minimalist, so I wear basic's in neutral colors, which can be hard to find in plus size. My go to store is Old Navy, I can always find basic layering pieces and usually order online. I like to try out new brands my purchasing at the thrift store first to see if I like the fit, recently discovered Banana Republic jeans this way, they fit great! Amazon has also been great to find good quality clothing, especially skirts. I see more brands expanding to plus size, usually just online which works with a good return policy.

When I went to Paris and London in 2015, I ever-so-carefully selected my 7 Piece Capsule Wardrobe. I felt so absolutely accomplished!

Can you believe it? Just 7 pieces for one week! I finally moved on from my Essentials Packing List and downsized to the  Minimalista Packing List , despite a forecast of rain and a chilly 55°F average.

What I Packed:

Additional, non-capsule pieces included: 2 outerwear, 1 pair of Ibex thermals , and 1 sleepwear set.

This doesn’t seem like much, does it? I even packed it all into my 30L daypack for a total of 4kg (9 lbs).

So how did I manage to overpack ?

When I first saw the dress, I liked the idea of it. It had long sleeves, a classic shape, it was available in black, and it had a round neckline that covered me where I wanted to be covered without choking me.

Once again, Alex, you solve my travel wardrobe conundrums!! I would wear dresses and tunics everyday if I could, but anything made of the “technical” fabrics suitable for travel are … Not my style. I tried a 100% bamboo cotton dress- nope, wrinkle city I tried a “technical cashmere” tunic….none of the insulating or wicking properties I’d hope for from a wool.

So, given your glowing recommendation, I can assume that this dress covers those bases?

I would love see a review or list of non-wool clothing for travel. I can’t wear wool due to allergies; oh it makes finding quality warm and transitional clothes hard. I’d wear that dress in a heartbeat, if it wasn’t wool; plus I wouldn’t have to hem it I’m 5’8” (finding a real Maxi dress is my challenge, can’t un-hem it)

It looks great on you! I love the neckline and the sleeves on this one. A merino wool dress is on my wish list for travel to PNW in October and it’s so hard to find one that is simple, flattering on an hourglass and with a proper fit for a petite 5’1″. I’m so happy that you shared that this one was able to be altered. When I’ve purchased from Ibex before their tanks were a little small on me but I assumed that is because they were meant to be fitted base layers (I ordered my normal jersey size) so that is the only debate, what size to order (I’m narrow shouldered but busty so sizing is always a challenge, order up and the shoulders aren’t right). I also like Athleta styles and they carry petites but they only do merino wool occasionally (never been a style that grabbed me) and I’d really like a merino wool style in a less sporty option.

I tried Icebreaker merino cardigan and tops , it made me itch so bad that I couldn’t last for more then a few minutes in it. Wool makes me itch horribly so imagine my hope that maybe merino wool is ok , but nope. I itch just as bad. I wish I can rock this dress too.

While I do not have any merino wool dresses, I wear merino wool skirts year round–even in the summer in middle Tennessee. I was 97 degrees here yesterday in downtown Nashville and I had on a merino wool skirt. I plan to take two on vacation with me when I vacation in Panama City Beach later this summer. Because the merino wool regulates your body temperature no matter whether it is summer or winter, you can wear the light-weight merino year round–and I do. I have many Ibex and Icebreaker products, and I love them all.

Whether you're curvy , tall, petite, or thin, you likely have your favorite clothing brands that work best for your figure. However, when it comes to clothes for plus-size women, many retailers have long neglected their customers.

"Not only has selection been limited, the product that is available often fails on fundamentals like silhouette, proportion, and fit," says Elizabeth Kosich , certified image stylist and founder of Elizabeth Kosich Styling .

In recent years, however, the tides have turned and we've seen an abundance of body-positive plus-size brands emerge. "Quality has gotten an upgrade too, from more trend-forward styles to better fabric technology to A-list designer collabs," Kosich adds.

To find out who's doing it best, keep reading to hear from Kosich and other stylists about the best plus-size clothing brands. You'll be able to fill your cart with everything from wardrobe staples to the latest styles.

1 Universal Standard

Every clothing item at Universal Standard is sold in sizes 00 to 40, or 4XS to 4XL. "We thought that conventional sizing seemed a little skewed, so we decided to shift the spotlight to reflect the real bell curve ," the brand explains on its website. "If the average woman wears a size 18, then that should be called a Medium, right?"

And when it comes to basics—like "perfect fitting jeans and their super cozy loungewear"— Sabrina Forscutt , founder and lead stylist at Sabrina Forscutt Styling , says you can't go wrong. She's also a fan of their cashmere sweaters , which come in several styles and colors. Julie Ramhold ,  consumer analyst with DealNews.com, notes that Universal Standard's prices do not change based on size, as can often be the case with plus sizes.

Kosich considers ELOQUII , which sells sizes 14-28, the most fashionable plus-size clothing brand. "Bright colors, daring silhouettes, and 'look at me' designs, the styles deliver on both form and function," she says. "Their collab with Missoni nearly broke the internet."

"From swimsuits to regular suits, they are one of my favorite places to shop as a plus-size woman and a professional stylist," adds Forscutt. Similarly, style coach   Liz Wendler says she shops ELOQUII when putting together a capsule wardrobe for a client.

But it's not just go-to, everyday clothing you'll find here. Forscutt says their bridal line "is simply stunning," and Wendler calls out their undergarments and swimwear.

Forscutt also notes that this brand regularly has amazing sales. At the time of writing, all sale items were an additional 50 percent off. In the past, we've seen $100 dresses marked down to $35, and $70 blouses selling for $25.

New York City-based WRAY carries sizes XXS-6XL. They might not be the most affordable brand on this list—denim starts at $185 and dresses around $225—but their clothes are "made for the artistic, sculptural, and design-heavy customer," notes Forscutt.

"Think cool patterns, epically good sets, and linen that actually fits," gushes Kat Tijerina , editor at The Mom Edit , who shares that this is one of her personal favorite brands.

Another big seller from WRAY is their selection of knee-high boots "that accommodate women who struggle to find wide-calf boots that fit their body shape," shares Jeanel Alvarado , retail expert at  RETAILBOSS . "The boots are made in Italy and feature elastic goring on both sides to provide stretch and ease of movement."

4 Lane Bryant

If you've ever walked through a U.S. shopping mall, we're guessing this brand rings a bell. Lane Bryant has been around since 1904, offering sizes 10-40.

"They've been at this the longest and it shows—broad range of product, impeccable fits, and great design, all of which validates their keen understanding of the plus-size woman," says Kosich.

In fact, Lane Bryant tests all of its pants and jeans "on real plus size women of all incredible shapes and sizes," a spokesperson for the company shared with Best Life .

Kosich adds that Lane Bryant now has many brands within the brand, like Cacique for intimates and LIVI for activewear. And she advises shoppers to watch out for collaborations with designers and influencers, such as Prabal Gurung in 2017 and Girl with Curves in 2018.

The prices are also right, with jeans averaging around $80 (many were on sale for as low as $30 at the time of writing) and cozy sweaters starting at $60.

Stylist and fashion influencer  Leah Wise , the founder of  CrashGal Couture , refers to Torrid as "pioneers in the plus-size industry." They offer sizes 10-30 and sell everything from jeans and dresses to bras and shoes.

Torrid keeps their offerings fresh with the latest styles. At the time of writing, there's a Marilyn Monroe -inspired collection available, complete with a flowy, A-line dress (you know the one we're talking about!), faux fur stole, and pin-tucked trouser pants. In addition, a collaboration with Betsey Johnson has all the ruffles, florals, and hard-soft mashups you could want.

Yitty is a size-inclusive shapewear brand (sizes range from XS to 6X) created for Fabletics by Grammy Award-winning singer LIZZO . At the launch of the collection in early 2022, she told the New York Times , "I'm selling a mentality that 'I can do what I want with my body, wear what I want and feel good while doing it.'"

Since that time, Yitty has begun offering so much more than just shapewear, from bodysuits and bras to underwear and sleepwear. The prices are affordable—$70 for high-waist leggings and shaping shorts—and at the time of writing, they were offering 70 percent off many items.

"I personally love their bralettes and leggings for everything from running to the store to hiking," says Forscutt, adding that their loungewear is some of the softest she's ever felt.

Another celebrity-founded shapewear brand, Kim Kardashian's SKIMS is all about body positivity.

"Full-on inclusion in an entire company is super-rare, and [in my opinion], SKIMS is one of the few that actually got it right from the jump and continues to create cool pieces for every body!" shares Tijerina.

Their shapewear comes in sizes XXS to 4X, and they also offer a Fits Everybody line made of "buttery soft, molds-to-your-body fabric that stretches to twice its size," they explain on their website.

But the inclusivity doesn't stop there: Another reason SKIMS is unique is that their shapewear and underwear come in nearly a dozen hues, ensuring all women can find a match for their skin tone.

Though the brand is known for undergarments, it now also sells loungewear, dresses (including the long slip dress that went viral on social media), and menswear.

If you look at a list of the "best jeans," you're likely to find Madewell , known for their flattering fits, high-quality construction, and range of trendy styles.

"Madewell is great for casual and everyday clothing from denim to dresses," says Wendler. "You will find timeless and easy essentials for work and weekend lifestyles."

Their plus sizes range from 14 to 28 in bottoms and dresses, and 1X to 4X in tops.

"And at a price range from $80 to $130, they are on the moderate to high end for a quality pair of jeans," notes Forscutt. Even better, their denim trade-in program allows you to bring in a pair of used jeans (even if they're not from Madewell) and receive $20 off a new pair.

9 Loud Bodies

Loud Bodies was founded in 2018 by Patricia Luiza Blaj , a Romanian influencer who wanted to create a size-inclusive clothing line that was fashionable, ethically made, and offered fun, trendy pieces.

In an interview with U.K. publication The Breakdown, Blaj explained that all of the brand's clothing is made in-house by her team of six. "All my employees are paid at least twice the minimum wage in our country [and] we offer great working conditions ," she said. "Our fabrics are purchased exclusively from providers who have certificates that attest to both the sustainability of the [fibers] and the ethical treatment of the supply chain involved."

For these reasons, Loud Bodies' clothing items "aren't going to be fast fashion with super cheap price tags, but they are made to last and have bright colors, fun patterns, and more that plus-size clothing often lacks," says Ramhold.

The clothing is available in sizes XXS to 10XL (0-42), and they'll do custom orders free of charge. "This applies both to sizing up/down what we currently offer and [customizing] in case you are in between sizing ," Loud Bodies explains on their website.

10 Girlfriend Collective

If you're looking for plus-size athleisure, Wendler says Girlfriend Collective is the way to go.

"The Compressive High-Rise Legging is the best, offering comfort and security," she shares. The pants retail for $78, are available in six essential colors and four limited colors, and range from size XXS to 6XL.

Plus-size fashion blogger Carla Kiley recommends sizing up in the compression fabrics. But after trying on a range of the brand's clothing—from several different leggings to a workout dress—she concluded that "the items all felt really high-quality and worth the price point," per an article on her website.

11 ModCloth

Online retailer ModCloth makes affordable vintage-inspired clothing, from swing dresses in colorful patterns (starting around $129) to retro polka dot swimsuits (starting at $89). You can even filter by decade while shopping on the site.

"True vintage pieces don't often come in larger sizes and for someone who loves the styles and pieces of the 1950s to the 1990s, ModCloth offers those designs in sizes up to US 28," shares Forscutt.

12 Anthropologie

Tijerina says Anthropologie is "the absolute best retailer for trendier plus-size clothes."

"They officially launched their plus-size collection in 2019 . It was an exciting day for all of us plus-size babes who—like me—had been shopping the oversized pieces for years," she shares. "But, to be honest, Anthro's initial launch was pretty disappointing. The clothing wasn't as cool as the straight-size offerings, there were limited pieces, and they were only available online."

"Fast-forward four years and much has improved," she continues. "The clothes are cooler, the brands Anthro carries are much more vast, and it has worked to do a better job of showing what the clothes actually look like on people with bigger bodies."

13 The EveryBody Wrap

Kosich founded this body-positive, shape-diverse, and size-inclusive brand herself, so she admits she's a bit biased. "Seeing a void in the marketplace for clothing that promoted body acceptance, self-confidence, and self-love, I launched The EveryBody Wrap in 2018 to empower women from the inside out," she tells Best Life .

One thing that's interesting about the brand is that it only sells two items— a $169 dress and a $139 swimsuit —and they each only come in three, one-size-fits-all options. The idea is that the wrap design is a "simple dressing system" that "accentuates, balances, and camouflages to showcase your best shape, while the performance fabrics lift, contour, and sculpt so you feel secure," the website explains.

The pieces are machine washable, won't wrinkle, and come in a travel-ready pouch, so they're perfect for packing in your suitcase.

14 Dia & Co.

Dia & Co. is not a brand per se, but Wendler deems it "THE online department store specific to full-figured women online."

Wendler notes that Dia & Co. sells high-end brands including 11 Honoré, DVF, Ganni, Vince, and BAACAL, and their items are available in sizes 10 to 32. "It's women-owned and they curate and partner with brands offering quality," she adds.

Another cool thing about this brand is its Style Boxes : personalized shipments curated by stylists. Options include the "closet makeover box," the "2024 essentials box," and the "business ready box." They also have a "try before you buy" option where you can try up to 10 items before being charged.

15 Gwynnie Bee

Not all clothing rental services are size-inclusive, but Gwynnie Bee offers sizes 0-32. The pricing depends on how many items you'll be renting at a time; monthly subscription plans start at $49 for one item and go up to $199 for 10 items.
