How to Plan the Perfect Customer Visit [+ Agenda Template]

Published: August 02, 2021

Now that the world is opening back up, it’s time to get out there and meet your customers face-to-face. For many newer customers, this might be their first time getting to spend time with you — especially as conferences have moved online.

Creating that connection is invaluable. But before you book that plane ticket, it’s essential to create a plan. Planning the perfect customer visit will ensure that you meet your goals and that your customer meeting will be successful. Here’s a look at how you get there.

Why plan a customer visit?

Jason Lemkin, the founder of SaaStr and EchoSign, has said “ I never lost a customer I actually visited. ” That’s a bold statement — one that's worth taking note of. But why? What is it about customer visits that has such a big impact on customer loyalty?

First of all, you get to make a stronger impression with your customers. No matter what you sell, you aren’t just selling a product — you’re also selling the people behind it.

Your vision, your passion, your knowledge are all play into the perceived value of your product or service. All of these elements come across more strongly when you visit in person. A Zoom call just isn’t enough time to go deep.

Secondly, you get to see how your customers are using your product in person. Are they constantly printing out reports to pin up on a wall? Are you seeing teams walk across the sales floor to point out something on a screen? What kind of working environment and equipment do they have? What other types of software are they using?

Everything happening behind the scenes paints a much clearer picture of who your customers are. And when it comes time to renew or jump on that next customer success call, you’ll have a lot more knowledge ready to draw on.

Finally, meeting your customers in person is a huge motivational boost! When you’re behind a screen for so long, it can start to feel like what you do doesn’t matter — or that you’re not making any real connections. But a visit to a customer’s office can change all that, and really light up your idea of “why” you do this at all.

5 Potential Goals of Your Customer Visit

Going into a customer visit with goals in mind will help you get the most out of your time there. Here are five goals to consider when planning a customer visit:

1. Understanding Their Business Goals

If you’re visiting a client, you’re likely hoping for a long term relationship. Understanding what their future goals are can help align your product with their needs. These in-depth conversations would rarely come up over a quick phone call.

2. Gathering Feedback

Customer visits provide a unique opportunity to gather honest and in-the-moment insight into what your customers need and want. When you sit next to someone who uses your product in their daily work, there’s a lot more space to have this feedback arise. And documenting it for future sales opportunities and your product team is one of the more productive actions you can take during a customer visit.

3. Referrals

In-person visits are a great time to ask for and give referrals. Ask, “Are there any other companies that you work with that you could see our product being helpful for?” Alternatively, if a pain point is mentioned by the client and you know the perfect company to help solve it, don’t be afraid to build that connection. It’s just another way you can bring value to your customers.

4. Uncovering Opportunities for Cross-Selling or Upselling

While your primary objective shouldn’t be pitching your offering at every opportunity, you might uncover a problem that your product or service can help solve. Noting these potential value-adds can make for more effective, thoughtfully targeted upsell and cross-sell conversations.

5. Testimonials and Case Studies

Customer visits can be a unique source of sales content, including pictures for case studies, video testimonials, and strong evidence-based customer stories. If you plan on making this one of your primary goals, consider asking your client to set the stage for these kinds of materials before you visit so you already know who you’ll be speaking to, before coming onsite.

How to Plan an Onsite Customer Meeting

By putting more effort in before you go, you’ll have a much better chance of achieving your goals and impressing your clients. Here are some key actions to consider when planning your customer meeting.

Thoroughly prepare before the visit.

Before you arrive, make sure you’re up to date on the state of the customer's account. Who are they usually talking to at your company? What customer service tickets have they raised lately? Are there outstanding issues that need to be addressed? These will come up during your visit.

Secondly, understand the current ecosystem your customer is working within. Is your customer in the news? What’s happening in their industry? What threats and opportunities are arising in their business? Being prepared and knowledgeable about their inner workings will make a better impression than coming in blind.

Decide who you’re meeting with.

Start by setting up a meeting with relevant company leadership. That could be the CEO, the founders, or the VP of the functional team you're working with — depending on the company's scale. Bear in mind, while this contact might be the "reason" for your visit, they're probably not who you'll be spending the most time with.

Once you have a meeting scheduled with the company's leadership, plan the rest of your day around meeting with the team leaders and employees using your product — as well as any teams that are open to signing up or expanding the current seat count or contract scope.

Make dinner reservations for you and your clients.

Traditionally, a customer visit includes taking your client out for a nice dinner as a token of appreciation. It also offers a chance for you to get to know each other outside of the limits of the work environment and form stronger relationships.

That being said, this is not a social visit. Keep your goals in mind — even outside of work hours. If you’re familiar with the restaurants in the area, choose a place that has options for every diet and has a good atmosphere for conversations. If you’re not familiar with the available options, ask the client where they’d recommend.

Complete the wrap-up report.

After the visit is over, you still have work to do. Create a wrap-up report for your internal teams back at the office. It should cover key elements of the visit like any confidentiality agreements put in place and who at your company you can share contact information or sales figures with.

Identify any action items that came up during the visit. Include any positive highlights during the meeting as well as any risks or opportunities that arose. Create a copy of the report for your client as well, to show that you were listening to their concerns and that you’re going to follow up with them.

Virtual visits

Talk to a health care provider from your computer, tablet or smartphone.

What is a virtual visit? It may be a term you’re hearing more often. That’s because the use of virtual visits, also known as telehealth, has expanded recently, offering people more ways to connect with a health care provider from home or work. During a virtual visit, you use digital technologies, like your smartphone, tablet or computer, to talk with a provider. You can get treatment options and even prescriptions for medications, if needed.

UnitedHealthcare offers members options for virtual visits with local providers or by using UnitedHealthcare’s preferred national providers. For benefits coverage information, please  sign in to your health plan account . Let’s go over some of the basics about virtual visits and how they work.

call on / visit

Hello everyone, I visited my uncle. I called on my uncle. Which is better, visited or called on in this sentence? My dictionary says that "call on somebody" is formal than "visit", so I suppose to call on one's uncle, if he is familiar, is a little odd, isn't it? Thanks in advance.

mgarizona

In AE "call on" for 'visit' is more than just formal, it's arch, bordering on entirely outmoded. I believe it is still common enough in BE, but wait for someone "over there" to voice an opinion. We (AE) do however use the phrase 'call on' in the sense 'urge': " I call on the senator to voice his opposition to the proposition ."

cuchuflete

Hello Akasaka, If you called on your uncle in American English, it would have been in the nineteenth century or before. The term is not in current use, though it would be understood by educated readers. It may still be current in other varieties of English.

Nunty

Does it not still exist in AE in set phrases like "pay a condolence call"?

nzfauna

In NZE, to visit is a more common verb than to call on, but both are still used. A related verb is "to call in on someone". E.g "I might call in on Suzie on my way home", "I need to call in on the supermarket on my way over". I don't consider visit to be less formal than call on.

sdgraham

I also note that we refer to "sales calls" where a salesperson "calls on" clients. I hadn't thought about it, but it seems to me that "call on" usually has a directed purpose, i.e. something to accomplish or fulfill whereas "visit" has no particular purpose except to share time. Note that "call on" cannot replace "visit" where places are involved. One does not "call on London," for example.

How to bill for a house call visit

call visit

More physicians are seeing the benefits of house calls , but at-home visits come with specific reimbursement and practical considerations. Here’s a quick overview of tips and CPT codes for the next time you bill for a house call visit.

Consider this when you bill for a house call

Medicare reimburses providers for home visits only if they are medically necessary. Healthcare.gov defines medically necessary services as “services or supplies that are needed to diagnose or treat a medical condition and that meet accepted standards of medical practice.”

In the case of house calls , physicians need to document that the home visit was medically necessary. In other words, you must present a medical rather than practical reason for visiting a patient outside the office.

Here are a few reminders to consider before you bill for a house call:

  • Providers need to document if the home visit is based upon a one-time, ongoing, or permanent need.
  • Your documentation should prove that the patient is not physically capable of traveling to the office. You may base this assessment on physical or mental issues, not financial or personal matters.
  • You can’t provide home services for your convenience as the physician.
  • Patients receiving care under Medicare’s home health benefit must be confined to the home. However, patients don’t need to be home-bound for physicians to provide services billed under CPT codes 99341 through 99350.

The Office of Inspector General (OIG) and many CMS contractors regularly audit home services billed to Medicare. Always provide appropriate documentation showing that the house call was medically necessary.

“In other words, you must present a medical rather than practical reason for visiting a patient outside the office.”

CPT Home Services Codes

Physicians use a limited set of CPT codes to bill for house calls. These codes apply to evaluation and management (E/M) services provided in a patient’s home. “Home” can include a private residence, temporary lodging, or short-term accommodation.

As of January 2023, providers should also use these codes to bill for medical services delivered in assisted living facilities and other places where only minimal health care is provided.

New patient CPT codes

99341 – Home visit for the evaluation and management of a new patient. This visit requires the following three components:

  • A problem-focused history
  • A problem-focused exam
  • Straightforward medical decision making

Here’s a typical description for this code:

Counseling and/or coordination of care with other physicians, other qualified health care professionals, or other agencies are provided consistent with the nature of the problem(s) and the patients’ and/or family’s needs.

Usually, the presenting problem(s) are of low severity. Typically, the physician spends 20 minutes face-to-face with the patient and/or family.

99342 – Same as above, but this is a moderate severity problem requiring 30 minutes.

(CPT deleted code 99343 as of January 2023.)

99344 – Moderate to high severity problem, or at least 60 minutes total time.

99345 – Patient unstable or has a significant new problem requiring immediate attention (75 minutes).

Established patient CPT codes

99347 – Home visit for evaluating and managing an established patient. The visit requires at least two of these three key components.

  • A problem-focused interval history
  • A problem-focused examination

Here’s the typical description for this code:

Usually, the presenting problem(s) are self-limited or minor. Typically, you spend 15 minutes face-to-face with the patient and/or family.

99348 – Same as above, but this problem is low to moderate severity, requiring at least 30 minutes face-to-face.

99349 – Moderate to high problem requiring 40 minutes.

99350 – Patient unstable or has a significant new problem requiring immediate physician attention (60 minutes).

When making a house call, you may offer additional services such as advanced care planning, diagnosis services, or other minor procedures. These can be documented and billed in addition to the visit code.

How to select house call CPT codes

These tips from the AAFP will help you choose the correct codes:

  • Select codes based on either your level of medical decision making (straightforward to complex) or the total time of the encounter. This is similar to selecting codes for office visits.
  • When the total encounter time exceeds the threshold for code 99345 or 99350 by at least 15 minutes, you can add code 99417 to report prolonged services. However, if you saw a Medicare patient, report prolonged services with code G0318 in addition to 99345 (more details here ).
  • CPT deleted E/M codes specific to domiciliary, rest home, or custodial care (99324-99238, 99334-99337, 99339, and 99340). For those types of visits, use the codes above instead.
  • For services in facilities where significant medical or psychiatric care is available, use codes 99304-99310 .

2023 Updates to CPT Codes for House Call Visits

The CPT codes above reflect 2023 updates that combined two previously distinct E/M visit families: “Domiciliary, Rest Home (Boarding Home), or Custodial Care services” and “Home services.” These visit types are now collectively called “Home or Residence services” and are used to report E/M services provided to patients in their home/residence, assisted living facilities, group homes, custodial care facilities, and residential substance abuse treatment facilities.

There are no changes to the care settings for the current code families. You can learn more about the recent updates in CMS’ Evaluation and Management Services Guide .

Three Types of Video Visits

' title=

At Facility

These visits are when you go to your facility and sit at a video visit station in the lobby. Your loved one or friend will be on a video visit station in their pod.

' title=

From Computer

At select facilities families and friends can have video visits from their own personal computers in the comfort of their own homes. You will need the following equipment to do a video visit from home:

  • A computer.
  • A webcam and a microphone, or a computer with these components built in (most laptops have these built in).
  • An internet browser. Internet browsers Safari 4 and higher, or Firefox 7 and higher, are strongly recommended. Using other browsers may not load the page appropriately in order to begin your visit. We are not responsible for technical problems or issues that may arise from using an unsupported browser.
  • For the best visit experience you should use headphones, but they are not required.
  • High speed internet (DSL or Cable) connection (dial up and satellite are not supported).

From Android Device

Video visits go mobile with our Visit Now Android app. At select facilities families and friends can have video visits from their own Android devices.

How to Schedule a Visit

Free video visit policy.

Free visits are a benefit for the inmate and are credited to the  inmate’s account. Therefore the inmate is the only one who  can book a free visit . This allows the inmate at your facility full control of whom they want to use their free visit with. There are also advanced scheduling rules that control the timeframe that a free visit can be booked. These rules vary by facility. If an inmate books a visit outside this timeframe, they will not be allowed to use a free visit.

  • Book the visit with their Friends & Family.
  • Suggest a visit with their Friends & Family. The Friends & Family must have no prepaid funds on their account at the time they confirm the suggested time. The inmate’s free visit will then be deducted.
  • Confirm a suggested visit from their friends and family. The Friends & Family must have no prepaid funds on their account at the time the inmate confirms the visit. The inmate’s free visit will then be deducted from their free visit allowance.

The only way Friends & Family can use a free visit is by suggesting a visit with the inmate. If the inmate has a free visit available and there are no prepaid funds on the Friends & Family account at the time the inmate confirms, the free visit will be deducted from inmate’s account.

If you are asked to be Telmate Verified it means your facility requires verification of your identity prior to acceptance of inmates' calls. The purpose of verification is to ensure inmates are not connecting with inappropriate people on the outside. The verification process is simple and can be completed before or after creating an account.

To be verified, you can make a deposit , schedule a visit or download and complete the Telmate Verified form .

Coding for E/M home visits changed this year. Here’s what you need to know

CPT has revised codes for at-home evaluation and management (E/M) services as of Jan. 1, 2023. Services to patients in a private residence (e.g., house or apartment) or temporary lodgings (e.g., hotel or shelter) are now combined with services in facilities where only minimal health care is provided (e.g., independent or assisted living) in these code families:

Home or residence E/M services, new patient

• 99341, straightforward medical decision making (MDM) or at least 15 minutes total time,

• 99342, low level MDM or at least 30 minutes total time,

• 99344 (code 99343 has been deleted), moderate level MDM or at least 60 minutes total time,

• 99345, high level MDM or at least 75 minutes total time.

Home or residence services, established patient

• 99347, straightforward MDM or at least 20 minutes total time,

• 99348, low level MDM or at least 30 minutes total time,

• 99349, moderate level MDM or at least 40 minutes total time,

• 99350, high level MDM or at least 60 minutes total time.

Select these codes based on either your level of medical decision making or total time on the date of the encounter , similar to selecting codes for office visits . The E/M codes specific to domiciliary, rest home (e.g., boarding home), or custodial care (99324-99238, 99334-99337, 99339, and 99340) have been deleted, and the above codes should also be used in those settings.

When total time on the date of the encounter exceeds the threshold for code 99345 or 99350 by at least 15 minutes, you can add code 99417 to report prolonged services. The exception to this is for patients with Medicare. For those patients, report prolonged home or residence services to Medicare with code G0318 in addition to 99345 (requires total time ≥140 minutes) or 99350 (requires total time ≥110 minutes). Code G0318 is not limited to time on the date of the encounter, but includes any work within three days prior to the service or within seven days after.

Services provided in facilities where significant medical or psychiatric care is available (e.g., nursing facility, intermediate care facility for persons with intellectual disabilities, or psychiatric residential treatment facility) are reported with codes 99304-99310 .

Telephone Visits Billing, Coding and Regulations Information

Some patients may not be able to have video visits because they don’t have access to interactive audio-video technology, they may not be facile with technology, or they may just prefer not to use video technology. Practices can use audio-only telephone calls to provide care to their patients if video visits are not possible.

  • For the duration of the public health emergency, CMS and some private payers are allowing audio-only telephone calls to be billed in the same way as in-person visits and these visits will be paid in equivalent amounts as E&M codes 99212-99214. This change is effective April 30, 2020, and is retroactive to March 1, 2020. The following criteria apply to Medicare visits during the emergency.
  • Can be used for new or established patients.
  • Document verbal consent and why in-person or audio-video encounter was not possible

Billing and Coding

  • Use modifier -93 for the reporting of medical services that are provided via real-time interaction between the physician or other qualified health care professional (QHP) and a patient through audio-only technology. The totality of the communication of information exchanged during the course of the service must be of an amount and nature that is sufficient to meet the key components and/or requirements of the same service when rendered via a face-to-face interaction. This modifier is effective January 1, 2022.
  • Use the normal Place of Service, e.g. POS = 11 for private practice.

Yellen calls for level playing field for US workers and firms during China visit

U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen called Friday for a level playing field for American companies and workers as she began a five-day visit to China in one of the country’s major industrial and export hubs. GUANGZHOU, China (AP) — U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen called on China on Friday to address manufacturing overcapacity that she said risks causing global economic dislocation, and to create a level playing field for American companies and workers.

Starting a five-day visit in one of China’s major industrial and export hubs, she raised what the U.S. considers to be unfair Chinese trade practices in talks with senior Chinese officials.

“The United States seeks a healthy economic relationship with China that benefits both sides,” she said ahead of a meeting with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng and the central bank governor and other officials in the southern city of Guangzhou. “But a healthy relationship must provide a level playing field for firms and workers in both countries.”

Earlier, she said at an an event hosted by the American Chamber of Commerce in China that “Chinese practices ... are tilting the playing field away from American workers and firms.”

China’s He didn’t get into specifics in remarks before the media but said that both sides “need to properly respond to key concerns of the other side.”

High on Yellen’s list is the overcapacity issue. Chinese government subsidies and other policy support have encouraged solar panel and EV makers in China to invest in factories, building far more production capacity than the domestic market can absorb.

The massive scale of production has driven down costs and ignited price wars for green technologies, a boon for consumers and efforts to reduce global dependence on fossil fuels. But Western governments fear that that capacity will flood their markets with low-priced exports, threatening American and European jobs.

Yellen, the first Cabinet member to visit China since President Joe Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping met last November, said that it is important for the U.S. and China to have open and direct communication on areas of disagreement.

“This includes the issue of China’s industrial overcapacity, which the United States and other countries are concerned can cause global spillovers,” she said during a meeting with the governor of Guangdong province.

Guangzhou is the capital of Guangdong, a Chinese manufacturing center that is home to telecom giant Huawei and BYD, China’s largest EV maker. Huawei has been hit hard by U.S. restrictions on semiconductor exports to China and is at the vanguard of Chinese efforts to become self-sufficient and a leader in technology .

Just as on her previous trip to China last July, Yellen got attention on social media for eating at a popular restaurant after her arrival Thursday evening.

A social media account run by Chinese state media posted a catchy video of her eating with the U.S. ambassador and other officials at Tao Tao Ju, a Guangzhou restaurant that dates to 1880.

The post, one of the most viewed on the Weibo microblog app the next morning, praised Yellen for holding chopsticks well but added, “as a U.S. official, Yellen needs to know more about China than just food. Only by knowing more about China can we set right the American view of the world, of China, of China-U.S. relations.”

Yellen, who heads to Beijing from Guangzhou, met with U.S., European and Japanese business representatives before her talks with He.

“I’ve heard from many American business executives that operating in China can be challenging,” she said at the American Chamber event at a marbled convention center.

Citing a recent survey by the Chamber that found that a third of American firms in China say they have experienced unfair treatment compared with local competitors, Yellen said the U.S. has seen China “pursue unfair economic practices, including imposing barriers to access for foreign firms and taking coercive actions against American companies.”

“I strongly believe that this doesn’t only hurt these American firms: Ending these unfair practices would benefit China by improving the business climate here,” she said in her speech.

China has pushed back against overcapacity concerns expressed by both the U.S. and Europe.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said earlier this week that the growth in Chinese EV and solar exports is conducive to green development globally and the result of the international division of labor and market demand.

He accused the U.S. of interfering with free trade by restricting tech exports to China.

“As for who is doing non-market manipulation, the fact is for everyone to see,” he said. “The U.S. has not stopped taking measures to contain China’s trade and technology. This is not ‘de-risking,’ rather, it is creating risks.”

Yellen said at the American Chamber event that the concern about excess capacity is shared by many other countries, both developing as well as rich ones.

“This is not anti-China policy,” she said. “It’s an effort for us to mitigate the risks from the inevitable global economic dislocation that will result if China doesn’t adjust its policies.”

Scott Paul, president of the Alliance for American Manufacturing — an alliance of businesses and the U.S. Steelworkers union, said that expectations for the Chinese government’s response are low.

“One thing that Yellen hopefully can and should say is that the U.S. is prepared to use all the tools that we have available through policy to ensure that China’s industrial overcapacity doesn’t negatively harm our economic and national security interests,” he told The Associated Press ahead of Yellen’s trip.

The Alliance released a report in February that said the introduction of inexpensive Chinese autos to the American market “could end up being an extinction-level event for the U.S. auto sector.” The sector accounts for 3% of America’s economy, according to the report.

Yellen told reporters during an Alaska refueling stop en route to China that the U.S. “won’t rule out” tariffs to respond to China’s heavily subsidized manufacturing of green energy products.

Moritsugu reported from Beijing. Associated Press researcher Wanqing Chen in Beijing contributed.

Biden and China's Xi 'check-in' call is the first contact since November

Steve Inskeep, photographed for NPR, 13 May 2019, in Washington DC.

Steve Inskeep

John Ruwitch headshot

John Ruwitch

President Biden was campaigning Tuesday, but made time to call China's leader. It's the first time the two have talked since November, when they met in the San Francisco Bay Area.

STEVE INSKEEP, HOST:

President Biden took time out of campaigning in the Midwest to make a phone call yesterday with Chinese leader Xi Jinping. It's the first time the two men have talked this year. NPR's John Ruwitch has been following developments. He's in Beijing. Hey there, John.

JOHN RUWITCH, BYLINE: Good morning.

INSKEEP: What did they talk about?

RUWITCH: Yeah, well, this was - a U.S. official called this a check-in, right? So the context is that when Biden and Xi Jinping met in November, they agreed on a range of things to try to lower the temperature in the relationship, including more contact at the senior level and at other levels. So this was a follow-up. And they covered a ton of ground. They talked about everything from trade to North Korea to climate change. And the White House said that Biden raised some U.S. concerns. One thing is, you know, he raised the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. There's a persistent tension there. He raised American concerns about Chinese support for Russia's defense industrial base, which is basically helping Russia in its war on Ukraine. And he also called out what the White House says are unfair trade policies and non-market economic practices by China.

INSKEEP: Oh, which has been a complaint of multiple U.S. administrations from both parties. So are they making any progress there?

RUWITCH: Well, it doesn't seem like it. I mean, this call seems to have sort of cast a spotlight on how much of an irritant it is in the relationship. I mean, the U.S. has taken steps to limit Chinese access to cutting-edge technology, like the most advanced microchips. Those are made outside China. And the fear is that they'll be used against the U.S. - excuse me - or to harm our national interest.

INSKEEP: Right.

RUWITCH: Biden kind of warned Xi that the United States would continue to take actions like this, as it saw them as necessary, and using - to prevent, you know, China from using U.S. technology against the U.S. It's been a sore point for Beijing.

INSKEEP: And I would imagine that Xi brought it up.

RUWITCH: He did. According to China's statement on this call, Xi pushed back pretty hard. He seemed to express sort of dismay about the U.S. continuing to take what he called a string of measures to suppress China's trade and technology development. I asked Wang Huiyao about this. He's a former trade official here in China who runs a think tank called the Center for China and Globalization here in Beijing.

WANG HUIYAO: China wants to stabilize, and China wants the U.S. to maintain its promises. I'm sure President Xi is not very satisfied with what's going on.

RUWITCH: And, you know, Xi told Biden during the call that China would not sit back and watch if the U.S. remains adamant, he said, on containing China's high-tech development.

INSKEEP: Words of warning - so where's this going?

RUWITCH: Yeah, well, the two - they agreed to keep talking, which was good. They said the phone call was positive. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen arrives in China tomorrow. Secretary of State Blinken is coming later on in the month. So there is some momentum here in this relationship, at least in getting the talking back up and running. The coming months are going to be a test of whether they can move beyond that and they can cooperate in areas where the two sides really have said that they have some common interests, like climate change, regulating AI, or going after, you know, illegal narcotics.

INSKEEP: John, how much of a factor was that other thing that's going on this year in the United States, the U.S. election in which President Biden is on the ballot?

RUWITCH: Well, neither side said it came up on the call. And it's not clear to me that Beijing would have a preference either way between Biden or Trump at this point. I mean, there's plusses and minuses to both. But the U.S. is pretty concerned that there might be efforts on China's part to interfere or influence the election or U.S. politics more broadly, either on social media or in other ways. Biden specifically raised concerns about China's ownership of the social media app TikTok when he talked to Xi. Beijing, though, you know, says it has a non-interference policy, and it doesn't get involved in the politics of other countries.

INSKEEP: John, I always appreciate your insights. Thanks so much.

RUWITCH: You bet.

INSKEEP: NPR's John Ruwitch in Beijing.

Four takeaways from Biden’s visit to Baltimore bridge crash site

The president repeated his pledge for the federal government to pay for the total bill of rebuilding the structure — “all of it,” he said.

“I call on Congress to authorize this effort as soon as possible,” Biden said. “My vow is that we will not rest … until the cement is dry and the entirety of a new bridge” is built.

Biden said a top priority of the federal response is to reopen the Port of Baltimore “as quickly as possible.”

He announced $8 million for upgrades to a former steel mill called Sparrows Point, which has been refurbished into an industrial facility that can handle a few cargo ships at a time. Those dollars are intended to ensure it can “take on more ships,” he said.

He also predicted the entire shipping channel on the Patapsco River would be reopened “by the end of May.”

“We’re coming back,” he said. “And we’re coming back soon.”

‘Temporary channel’

Among the lawmakers present during Biden’s visit was Maryland Democratic Sen. Chris Van Hollen, one of the most vocal critics from inside Biden’s party about his handling of Israel’s conduct of its war in Gaza.

The duo was face-to-face Friday, though focused on domestic matters.

Van Hollen and other Democratic senators last month wrote to Biden, urging him to enforce a U.S. law banning foreign aid to countries deemed to be blocking humanitarian aid. In recent weeks, White House officials have publicly accused Israel of doing just that.

Ahead of Biden’s visit, Van Hollen tweeted that “a temporary channel is expected to open as soon as the end of this month & the main channel by end of May.”

That could allow the Port of Baltimore to, at least partially, reopen.

Van Hollen spoke before Biden, crediting the president and his administration for “working with all levels of government to get it done.”

Van Hollen said Biden has stressed helping the people most impacted by the crash. “I’m so proud we have the president back in Baltimore,” he said. “I’m sorry about the circumstances.”

The state’s senior senator, retiring Democrat Benjamin L. Cardin, spoke through heavy wind, saying “we are already planning to rebuild the bridge.” He expressed the importance of doing so, saying the state has undergone a considerable hike in the size of its automobile population in recent years.

‘Largest port’

Joining Biden on Marine One for the aerial tour of the crash site was Maryland Gov. Wes Moore. He was in the presidential motorcade Friday as Biden was driven from Martin State Airport Landing Zone in Middle River, Md., to nearby Dundalk, which is adjacent to the fallen bridge.

And Moore stood beside Biden, just off the president’s left shoulder, as he delivered remarks.

The 45-year-old governor is dealing with his first major state crisis since taking office in January 2023. The matter has given him a national profile as political analysts begin to imagine a party post-Biden.

Even before Biden departed the White House, Moore was continuing to push his message, which he has at times directed at spending-skeptical Republican lawmakers that port closure is “not just something that’s impacting Baltimore.”

“The port of Baltimore is responsible for $70 billion annually,” he told MSNBC. “We are looking at a port that is the largest port for agricultural equipment, the largest port for new cars, the largest port for heavy trucks, the largest ports for spices and sugars.

“This is impacting the farmer in Kentucky. It’s impacting the auto dealer in Ohio,” he added. “It’s impacting the restaurant owner in Tennessee. It’s impacting the entire country and our economic growth.”

Speaking before Biden, Moore said leaders are “doubling down on their commitment to this city and this state.” He said he had secured the assurances that impacted businesses have agreed to retain workers, rather than laying them off to reduce costs while their profits are down. Moore also touted economic aid his administration has made available for affected individuals and businesses.

call visit

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, also a rising Democratic star, praised Moore’s role since the Dali rammed into the bridge.

Buttigieg said lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic supply chain disruption “are working here,” but he did not offer estimates for when the bridge might be cleared nor when construction on a replacement could begin. Nor did he say when officials think the port might be reopened.

‘Abandoning Israel?’

The presidency means juggling multiple crises.

Foreign and domestic.

Biden appeared to dismiss the notion that his pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to alter course in Gaza means he is abandoning Israel. When asked by a reporter if he was doing just that, Biden responded as he was leaving the White House: “Is that a serious question?”

“I asked them to do what they’re doing,” Biden said, apparently referring to Israel’s decision to allow increased aid into Gaza.

U.S. officials are still examining whether Israel has made adequate changes to its procedures for selecting and engaging targets in the enclave, a senior official said Friday morning.
