McEVOY RANCH

Established in 1990, McEvoy Ranch is a 550-acre family farm in Petaluma, County Sonoma in California, known for its excellent extra virgin olive oil produced for more than 3 decades in a sustainable way . Passionate about Italian oils from the Tuscany region, founder Nan McEvoy imported a thousand seedlings from Italy with the aim of producing olive oil in California with the same quality , with the region's unique microclimate.

To enrich its nutrient content and reduce waste and water consumption, the ranch produces its own organic compost from the by-products of olive oil production. In addition to olive oils, the farm also produces wines, offers tastings, culinary experiences, tours and other interesting activities.

>> McEVOY RANCH OILS

All oils are organic and certified by California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF). Everything is done entirely on the ranch, from growing the olives, harvesting, grinding, blending and bottling. To learn more details, it is possible to take the Ranch Tour. There is a Limited Edition (Limited Edition) released in late spring, with the blend changing depending on the season's harvest. Another highlight are the flavored oils , produced in the traditional Agrumato process, in which the fruit or flavoring herbs (i.e. lemons, jalapeños, rosemary) are ground together with the olives. See more details in the official video below.

>> OTHER PRODUCTS McEVOY RANCH

  • McEVOY RANCH WINES : In 2006, vines were planted in search of quality wines that would complement the extra virgin olive oils. There are currently five separate certified organic vineyards on 28 acres of land, adjusting farming practices to bring out the best in each harvest.
  • McEVOY RANCH CULINARY COLLECTION : With several orchards and gardens on the land, the ranch also offers interesting gastronomic products, including organic olives, vinegar, jams, honey, mustard, spices, teas, coffee, among others.

OUR EXPERIENCE AT McEVOY RANCH

We visited McEvoy Ranch on a beautiful, sunny July day. Once we arrived, we parked the car and walked into the beautiful property to find a friendly staff member who offered us some complimentary rosé wine.

McEvoy Ranch: Oil Tasting in Petaluma, California

The only drawback of the day is that it was very windy, which slightly disrupted our plans. Our idea was to sit at a table facing the property's beautiful lake, but the available seats were in the shade and the thermal sensation made it impossible to stay there.

McEvoy Ranch: Oil Tasting in Petaluma, California

So we sat at a large round table in the center of the patio, a little further from the lake, but with a beautiful view of the olive trees in the background. A few weeks in advance, we had booked an olive oil tasting. I had even thought about having lunch there, but the lack of vegan options on the menu made us stick with just the tasting.

McEvoy Ranch: Oil Tasting in Petaluma, California

An employee brought a basket of delicious bread and 5 types of oil for tasting, which were explained one by one: Certified Organic Limited Edition Extra Virgin Olive Oil (limited edition made with a blend of two oils), Certified Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil (traditional), Certified Organic Lemon Olive Oil (lemon), Garlic Olive Oil (garlic), and Ginger Turmeric Olive Oil (ginger and turmeric).

McEvoy Ranch: Oil Tasting in Petaluma, California

There are other flavors of oil that can be sampled as well and cost an additional US$ 3, including oils with flavors of basil, herbs de Provence, jalapeño pepper, spices, and orange. We only stayed in the 5 of the first tasting because we thought the quantity was too big for just one person.

McEvoy Ranch: Oil Tasting in Petaluma, California

To be honest, we would be quite happy to share a tasting for just two people, as oil is something we don't usually consume in large quantities. In addition to wine on arrival, we also received a complimentary portion of popcorn seasoned with herbal oil.

McEvoy Ranch: Oil Tasting in Petaluma, California

After finishing the delicious tasting, we went to the small shop on the property to pay the bill and buy olive oils. The ones we liked the most were the Certified Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil (we bought a large bottle) and the Certified Organic Lemon Olive Oil (we bought a small one). I fell in love with the gift kits with miniature oils and some with vinegar too. A complete charm!

McEvoy Ranch: Oil Tasting in Petaluma, California

We left the shop and took the opportunity to take some more pictures and admire the beautiful property. The place is stunning, the staff are incredible and the oils are of excellent quality. It was an experience more than approved by us!

3 Authentic Ranch Experiences

Petaluma is the best of both worlds: a little bit city and a little bit country. The city’s reputation as a foodie destination rivals that of San Francisco, our big city neighbor to the south. When it comes to the country-side of Petaluma, local ranches offer outdoor experiences that are unmatched in variety and interest. Here are three of our top picks:

McEvoy Ranch Walkabout Tour

Describing a ranch as “refined” may sound like an oxymoron but it captures the elegant and (literally) cultivated approach that McEvoy Ranch takes as the largest producer of organic olive oil in the US.

A ranch where you’re greeted by a giant sculptural bunny sitting atop the gate? From the moment you arrive, any preconceived ideas that McEvoy is a typical ranch are upended in the best possible way.

mcevoy ranch walkabout tour

The hour-long “Walkabout Tour” begins in the sunny tasting room and then travels through the olive orchards. Enjoy stunning vistas of the 57-acre ranch and learn about its history before returning to the tasting room for casual olive oil sampling. Then browse their charming store for Ode Natural Beauty health and wellness products – many made with McEvoy olive oil – along with stylish kitchen items, tasty tapenades, and other unique gifts.

Garden Valley Ranch Flower Foraging

Imagine the heady experience of wandering amongst 8,000 rose bushes, breathing in the intoxicating fragrance and discovering shades of blossoms ranging from blush to burgundy. While you’re roaming the five acres of roses, choose your favorites to cut and take home in a bucket provided by the Ranch. Pack a picnic, blanket, clippers, and some heavy-duty gloves (thorns…ouch!) and enjoy being transported to a field of dreams for the afternoon.

mcevoy ranch walkabout tour

Achadinha Cheese Company Farm Tour

“Achadinha” is an unusual name for a ranch but it speaks to the cheesemaking heritage of the Pacheco family. Three generations ago, Jim’s grandfather was making cheese in Achadinha, a parish in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores. Today, those same time-honored skills are used on their ranch in Petaluma to make some of the best cheese in Sonoma County.

On the 90 minute tour, visit the cheese plant, milking parlor, and the loafing barns where the girls (goats and cows) hang out, and taste cheese!

If the name McEvoy sounds familiar, you may have a bottle of McEvoy extra-virgin olive oil on your kitchen counter. Or you might remember Nan McEvoy”s name from her long and illustrious journalism career. The granddaughter of San Francisco Chronicle founder M. H. de Young, McEvoy was chairman of the newspaper”s board until the company was sold. But her post-newspaper career revolved around the olive trees she planted on her Petaluma ranch in the 1990s, and the high-end extra-virgin olive oil business that arose from those groves.

The 95-year-old McEvoy died in March, but her legacy lives on at her ranch, not just in those bottles of olive oil, but wine as well. Several years ago her son, Nian, convinced his mother they should plant vineyards.

Now you can taste the fruits of the ranch on a visit to McEvoy”s new wine tasting room. Make an appointment for the hourlong alfresco “At Our Table” experience ($30), a seated tasting of three wines paired with “ranch nibbles” created from McEvoy produce and ingredients from Sonoma County food purveyors. Or get a more in-depth experience of the property via a “Walkabout” ($95), a two-hour tour that includes visits to the olive groves, vineyards and the impressive Chinese Pavilion built by McEvoy for entertaining. You”ll sample the wines and olive oil along with small bites.

The details: By appointment only. “At Our Table” runs 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday; “Walkabout” runs 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday. 5935 Red Hill Road, Petaluma; www.mcevoyranch.com .

The sips: The sassy 2014 Rosebud Ros ($20) was tart and refreshing with blood orange citrus and strawberry notes. The 2012 Evening Standard ($45), a nod to McEvoy”s newspaper career, sports a vintage typewriter label, the kind McEvoy used to write her stories. The wine is earthy, with cherry, cranberry and pomegranate aromas, followed by black tea and licorice on the silky finish.

Our paths crossed when McEvoy was looking for a new place to make wine and, at the same time, a new winemaker. As we talked, it became clear that my winemaking style was well suited to the McEvoy ethos and so we decided to work together.

Mcevoy ranch traditional blend extra virgin olive oil.

Our certified organic EVOO is estate-grown and produced from the 2018 harvest of seven Italian olive varieties on our ranch. The blend is quite complex and beautifully balanced with intense olive fruitiness and flavors of raw artichoke and sweet green almond. There is a slightly herbaceous note that we find enticing with a distinct hint of cinnamon from the Leccino olive. The finish is smooth with a whisper of mild pepper.

By tradition that dates to antiquity, grapes and olives have been planted near each other, together supplying two staples of the southern European diet: wine and olive oil. Given that history and the Wine Country’s Mediterranean climate, it’s no surprise that 19th-century French, Italian, and other immigrants planted olive trees near vineyards here. As the Napa Valley and Sonoma County evolved into a culinary mecca, many wineries began growing and harvesting olives to produce high-quality extra-virgin olive oils.

ODE was born out of McEvoy Ranch in Northern California, a place famed for its extra -virgin certified-organic olive oil. Unlike the bottles you pick up at the grocery store, the oil native to the region contains high levels of readily absorbable squalene, which dermatologists have found to be an extremely hydrating lipid similar to the skin's natural sebum. Because they harvest the olives before they're fully ripe, all ODE skincare formulations contain concentrated polyphenol, as well as vitamins A and E, and come locally sourced by way of the California coast.
