Scenic River Cruises FAQs
Your passport and visa.
Can scenic arrange my passport and visas?
No, Scenic and/or their employees and their agents are not responsible for passport, visa requirements, entry, health or other requirements of the countries visited or for any loss sustained by you for failing to comply with laws, regulations, orders and/or requirements of countries visited, and will not be liable for any costs or cancellation penalties or inconvenience where travelers do not have a travel authorization, and are not permitted to travel.
Can scenic organize my travel insurance?
No, this is the responsibility of the passenger; however your travel agent can do this on your behalf. We strongly advise you to take out travel insurance to cover any unforeseen circumstances, which may arise as defined in the respective proposal forms. It is a good idea to take your travel insurance documents with you.
Should I bring copies of my passport and visas?
Yes. As your passport will be kept on board the ship throughout the cruise portion for transit formality reasons, we recommend you bring a photocopy of your passport/visas with you to carry on you at all times when on shore.
What validity do I need on my passport?
All passengers are required to possess a passport valid for 6 months beyond the conclusion of their trip. Please note: If your nationality (passport) differs from the country in which you reside, please take the time to check carefully with your local consulates concerning visa and passport requirements for your travels. Holidays can be disrupted or have to be altered altogether if the correct documents cannot be supplied at airports or borders, so check very carefully that you have the required papers.
What visas do I require
Visa requirements can vary and it is the sole responsibility of each passenger to have the necessary visas and to comply with entry, health or other requirements of the countries visited. More advice can also be found at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s website.
Your Luggage
How much luggage can I bring on a scenic cruise?
The luggage allowance while on tour is one suitcase with a maximum size of 30 x 21 x 11 inches (76 x 53 x 28 cms) and weight of 44 lbs (20 kilograms). You may also carry a small backpack or the Scenic overnight bag on board the coach for the duration of the tour. Additional bags beyond the luggage allowance may incur additional charges and are to be settled directly to the hotel or as required. It is advised that you check airline luggage requirements directly with your most significant airline carrier.
How much luggage can I take on an aircraft?
It is advised that you check airline luggage requirements directly with your most significant airline carrier.
Is porterage included?
Handling and porterage of your luggage (as per the luggage allowance above) is included in your tour. Additional bags beyond the allowance may be charged or it may be the responsibility of the passenger to forward the baggage to another destination. Luggage handling is not included during any independent or non-escorted touring. In this situation, luggage handling and porterage will need to be organised directly with the hotel porters.
Should I attach the scenic luggage label provided prior to departure?
No, please wait until you have claimed your luggage at your destination airport. This will ensure airline companies will not tear off this tag, as it is required to easily identify your luggage for transfer services and hotels.
What clothing should I pack?
Casual sportswear for daytime that can be mixed/matched/layered A warm jacket/gloves/hat/scarf for cooler mornings and nights Swimwear Comfortable walking shoes with rubber soles for good grip Sunglasses and a sun hat Women require a minimum of one skirt or a dress

Health and Fitness
Are there any health risks that I should be aware of?
Viral gastroenteritis is a very common virus that can be found almost anywhere, but its opportunity to spread is greater in contained environments. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. It may also include fever, stomach issues and headache. The symptoms usually start 12 to 48 hours after viral infection and can last from 1 to 10 days. Most people who become sick with viral gastroenteritis recover quickly with no further problems. However if the illness is more severe, further medical care may be required to treat dehydration. The most effective protection from personal contamination is ensuring strict attention to personal hygiene and in particular, frequent and thorough hand washing with soap and water and refraining from hand-to-mouth contact.
Colds and other viruses can spread quickly in an enclosed area such as a ship. Continue to practice common-sense hygiene and respiratory courtesy. Wash your hands often and cover your coughs and sneeze. It is recommended that passengers carry an anti-bacterial hand sanitizer, which does not require rinsing with water. Use a sanitiser frequently i.e. after shore excursions, prior to meals and throughout the day. If you have any questions regarding your health or safety while on tour, please do not hesitate to ask your Tour Director.
Motion sickness can be a problem for some people when cruising, flying or travelling on coaches and trains and it is a good idea to take precautionary measures. Drugs for treating motion sickness can be purchased at most pharmacies in Canada, however a side effect can by drowsiness. Alternatives such as ginger tablets and acupressure wristbands are also available and work well for some people.
Can I take prescription medication?
Yes and its advisable to pack an ample supply of any medicine you are taking, copies of prescriptions and the telephone/fax number of your doctor. Because of strict drug laws in some countries, drugs you take on doctor’s orders should be carried in their original container showing the prescription label. Always keep your medication in your hand luggage.
Can I travel in a wheelchair?
Due to the structure of old buildings, access to some establishments may not be convenient for wheelchair use, and facilities for the disabled in general may be limited. Many areas are pedestrian only. Marksburg Castle has a number of stairs which may impact guests with limited mobility access to all touring areas, but this will not impede participation of the medieval banquet.
Vietnam and Cambodia:
We regret that wheelchairs cannot be accommodated on these tours.
Should I provide scenic with my health and fitness details prior to travelling?
We will supply a Health and Fitness form in your travel wallet. These forms are designed to provide us with instant information if an emergency should arise. These forms will be returned unopened at the completion of the tour. It is not compulsory to fill out these forms but is strongly recommended.
- We strongly recommend a visit to your doctor and dentist prior to your tour.
- If you are aged 70 or over at the Tour Departure date you must provide us with a doctor’s letter confirming you are fit and healthy enough to take part in the specified tour including reference to the itinerary, destinations and tour departure date.
- You must advise us of any pre-existing medical conditions that might reasonably be expected to increase your risk of requiring medical attention, affect the normal conduct of the tour and/or the enjoyment of other tour members.
- You will be required to fill in our Health and Fitness form and hand it to your Tour Director on the tour departure date.
What sort of first aid medical items should I bring with me?
It may be useful to bring a supply of basic items with you. A first aid kit may include band-aids, antiseptic, aspirin, cough medicine, throat lozenges, cold and flu medication, diarrhoea medication, mild laxative, eye ointments/drops for minor infections, a general antibiotic and any special medications you may need personally. Please remember to bring a letter from your doctor or a copy of the prescription for any medication that you are carrying with you.
What sort of fitness level do I require to travel?
We welcome you if you have a disability or other special need, provided you are able to care for yourself or are accompanied by a companion capable of providing all the assistance you require. Please note that although we will use reasonable endeavours to provide you with all the activities on your Itinerary, depending on your disability, you may not be able to participate in every activity and the Tour Director will have the right to refuse your participation if the Tour Director believes your health and safety or the health and safety of other passengers may be impacted by your participation. You must advise us (or your travel agent) of any disability, medical condition or dietary requirement at the time of booking.
It is not possible for large coaches to be used for some city sightseeing therefore many towns and cities will be visited by way of walking tours and accordingly, a reasonable level of fitness is required.
- Much of Europe is based on a myriad of old buildings and there are split-levels, steps and uneven surfaces everywhere. High-heeled shoes are not suitable for cobblestone streets and steep inclines in medieval towns and cities. It is essential to have comfortable, rubber-soled walking shoes.
- Due to the amount of walking on your cruise shore excursions, which typically run for up to 3 hours, a reasonable level of fitness is required.
Please Note: Scenic reserves the right, at its discretion to cancel your booking and refund the money paid by you, less any unrecoverable costs, if it is deemed you are not suitable for the trip booked. It is your responsibility to advise Scenic of any pre-existing medical conditions that might reasonably be expected to increase the risk of you requiring medical attention, or that might affect the normal conduct of a trip and the enjoyment of other trip participants.
- The land touring program requires passengers to be able to walk for up to 0.6 – 1.2 miles (1 – 2 kilometres) over steps and uneven ground.
- For your safety and enjoyment, you should be in good physical condition to participate in all tours.
What vaccinations do I require?
Recommended vaccinations and other health protection measures vary and are subject to change. You must consult your doctor on current vaccinations needed for your destination. Also please refer to the Canada Government’s Travel Voyage website for additional information.
- If you are entering India from an infected area such as Africa, then you must be vaccinated against Yellow Fever.
- Hepatitis (both A and B, depending on your individual circumstances), vaccination shots are also recommended, such as a booster shot for tetanus.
Will my special requirements be met throughout the tour?
Your special requirements have been passed onto all suppliers. Special requirements refer to airline seating, special dietary and medical needs. These requirements are on a request basis only and cannot be guaranteed by Scenic. We strongly advise that you reconfirm your meal requests with the Scenic Cruise Director upon joining your tour.
Weather and climate
How do I know if I am suffering from altitude sickness?
How altitude sickness affects you can range from mild to severe and occurs because less oxygen is reaching the muscles and the brain, requiring the heart and lungs to compensate by working harder. Symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) usually develop during the first 24 hours at altitude but may be delayed up to 3 weeks. Mild symptoms include headache, lethargy, dizziness, difficulty sleeping and loss of appetite. AMS may become severe without warning. Please consult your doctor before departure to ensure you have an adequate level of fitness and health.
What can I do to try to prevent symptoms of acute mountain sickness?
- Drink extra fluids. The mountain air is dry and cold and moisture is lost as you breathe.
- Evaporation of sweat may occur unnoticed and result in dehydration
- Eat light, high carbohydrate meals for more energy
- Avoid alcohol as it may increase the risk of dehydration
- Avoid sedatives
- Altitude Sickness tablets are available to help prevent/ reduce symptoms, consult your physician for advice on whether these are suitable for you.

Should I book my flight through my cruise line?
Update: Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .
Choose a cruise deal with airfare included, or book an air-cruise package, and your cruise purchase can really be one-stop shopping. You always get transportation, food and lodging all in one price with a cruise, but book your airfare through your cruise line, and you'll take care of the majority of your travel plans in one transaction.
But should you book your flights through your cruise line? While doing so can offer various benefits, you will want to consider whether the pros outweigh any cons. The answer will depend on your particular travel situation, and whether you're contemplating a cruise with flights included in the deal or simply paying for flights through your cruise line.
Learn more about the benefits and drawbacks of cruise and flight packages to determine whether it's a smart move to book your flights via your cruise line.

5 reasons why you should book your flight through your cruise line
The airfare can be a good deal.
Some high-end cruise lines include flights as a booking perk. Oceania Cruises offers economy airfare with the most inclusive (and expensive) of its three OLife Choice promotion tiers, while Regent Seven Seas Cruises lures travelers with free business-class flights to Europe. It's hard to find a better deal than free, even if you might not have as much control over your booking as you'd like.
Even cruise lines selling you flights claim to have low rates. Royal Caribbean claims that its airfares are so competitive that it will refund you 110% of the difference in onboard credit if you can find a cheaper flight. It makes sense that cruise lines' in-house travel agencies can get access to the lowest rates or bulk fares not available to the general public.
You'll still earn points and miles
Buying a cruise line air package is similar to purchasing flights through a travel agent. You can add your frequent flyer number to the reservation to earn miles and access your elite perks — but watch out for extremely discounted fares that might not qualify. Plus, if you pay with a rewards-earning credit card, you'll also get points or miles for your purchase.
TPG pro tip: Look for credit cards that earn extra points on travel purchases , so your cruise-and-flight purchase can earn you free travel faster. Among our top-rated credit cards for travel are the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card, which gives you 2 Ultimate Rewards points per dollar spent on travel purchases, and the Chase Sapphire Reserve, which offers 3 points per dollar on travel.

The cruise line will assist you with travel disruptions
The cruise line's travel department has the back of all cruisers who purchased flights through them. If your flight is delayed due to weather or a mechanical problem, agents will assist you with rebooking. Should the flight issues lead to you missing your ship, the line will make arrangements to get you to the next port of call.
The same is true if your cruise ends unexpectedly early due to weather, mechanical issues or an illness outbreak. The cruise line's air department will rebook cruise passengers who booked their flights through the cruise line, but independent travelers will be left to fend for themselves.
You can book now and pay later
Are you a planner and book your cruise a year in advance? With airline change fees, you might not want to pay for airfare months in advance, in case your plans change. Some cruise lines' air-cruise packages, such as Carnival Cruise Line 's Fly2Fun Air Program and Holland America 's Flight Ease, allow you to pay for your flights when your final cruise payment is due (typically about 90 days prior to sailing) rather than at the time of booking.

Cruise lines don't charge booking fees
Cruise lines will not charge you service or convenience fees to book your flights through their air departments. You only have to pay the airfare and the applicable airline taxes and fees.
5 reasons not to book your flight through your cruise line
You can't pay with miles.
If you'd love to book your flights with credit card points or airline miles, you'll need to do that through the airline, not the cruise line.
You might also want to watch out if you hope to pay for coach airfare through your cruise line and then upgrade with miles. As cruise lines often negotiate special low rates with the airlines, these fare classes are often ineligible for mileage or elite upgrades.
Cruise lines charge deviation fees for custom itineraries
Some cruise line air bookings come with restrictions around when you can fly. Should you wish to arrive several days early or spend a week in the area after your cruise, perhaps even flying home from a nearby city, you might need to pay the cruise line a deviation fee of a few hundred dollars.
Related: 11 extra charges on cruise ships that will drive you nuts — and what you can do about them
You can't always pick your airline, schedule or flight routing
Many cruise lines now offer choice and flexibility with airline arrangements, letting you pick your airline, travel time and routing. However, some of the cheaper, more restrictive options leave the booking exclusively to the cruise line's air department, allowing you no say in your flight route — unless you pay the aforementioned deviation fee or pay more for a flexible booking option. For example, with Viking , you'd need to upgrade from their base Inclusive Air option to the pricier Viking Air Plus fares in order to choose your specific flights.
Free airfare isn't free
Remember that free airfare perk? It's not actually free. The cruise lines increase the base cruise fare to cover the extra perks. Decline the airfare, and they will reimburse you with an air credit or charge you a cruise-only rate. If you can find fares cheaper than the credit, you'll save money by not booking your flights through your cruise line.
This advice especially applies to travelers flying from smaller airports that aren't among the major ones covered by the free airfare deal. Most cruise line airfare fine print states that passengers flying out of other airports will pay an additional fee. If you can book flights that are cheaper than the fee plus the air credit, you should do that and skip the not-actually-free airfare.
The cruise lines can charge service fees for changes
Cruise lines can add their own fees and surcharges on top of the typical airline charges. Some lines, such as Carnival, charge a flat fee for flight changes, in addition to the fees and fines imposed by airlines. If saving money is the most important consideration, you might want to book independently to avoid any extra surcharges.

Airlines that Oceania Cruises uses for international trips
By Zandarr , December 31, 2017 in Oceania Cruises

When going on international trips from the US, Oceania has always used Air France and/or Lufthansa airlines. What other airlines do they use for international flights?

Impossible to say as their contracts change regularly you name it they have used it. BA, KLM, SAS, UA, Delta, AA, Air France....
We are flying to Sydney in May on Qantas booked through O. Happy New Year to all!
Thank you Paul. We are cruising in April but will not get airline schedule for another 30 days or so and we are just trying to see the airlines that are leaving San Francisco on the day we fly.
Happy New Year!!
Our flight from LAX to Papeete is on Air Tahiti Nui.
The international flights would be to Barcelona Spain
Chances are pretty good that you’ll leave SFO on United but not direct to BCN.
Into and out of Heathrow they tend to use British Airways.
Into Montreal in May from Heathrow we will be on Air Canada.
Thanks but i would bet the house that it will not be United but thanks for responding.

Please come back and let us know.
Happy New Year!
Flying out of SFO does not mean you will have a flight directly to Europe. You could fly on any carrier to the east coast and then out of Boston, NY, Philadelphia, Newark or Atlanta direct to Barcelona.
Last time we flew to Barcelona from Seattle, we did a "deviation request" for days early and days later than the cruise dates- requested Seattle to Amsterdam to Barcelona, return was Venice to CDG to SEA. No additional charges.
As stated earlier, O’s contracts with the various airlines change yearly. On the few times we used O Air we have flown United domestically, but never internationally. United was use to get us to a hub, but then we are on other’s actual metal. BA is typically used for trips to LHR.
You're on :D
As you know, SFO is a hub for United and Virgin America. United has by far the most (and often cheapest) flights from SFO to other hubs. Hence the odds are in favor of UA but of course, it could be Virgin, AA or DL - certainly not Southwest, Alaska.

We did a deviation when we went to Greece last year but we did have to pay for the change.
We are thinking it will be AF, Lufthansa or BA based on the times leaving SFO and because we are flying Premium Economy.
ITA matrix shows the cheapest 1 stop premium economy on Turkish and then Delta, followed by AF and Virgin.
There are some cheaper 2 stop flights
Not sure what O can get with their contracts
Please let us know what airlines will O assign to you.

Zandarr, If I were a betting man (which I'm really not), I would bet you will be flying domestic economy somewhere to the east coast from SFO (or wherever from CA) and then transferring to PE over the Atlantic to BCN. I would not set your expectations on flying PE non-stop from SFO to Europe but, you never know. You are the one rolling the dice having O book your flights so I wish you all the luck.

Cheers, John[/quot Thanks for the response. I guess I should have been more clear about what I was asking. I know that there are not any non stop flights from SFO but since we are flying Premium E with the airlines that should take us to BCN I was trying to get ahead of the game before the flight schedules comes out this month. The times that we have used Oceania Air, we have never flown on a US airline when flying. Maybe this will change this year. We are on the Riviera in April.
I would suggest what has already been mentioned on this thread (and many previous threads). You should investigate the best routes/airline/air planes you would find most desirable and then ask your TA to have O quote them for you. You do not have to pay the deviation fee until you accept that specific itinerary and any extra fees they might ask for. Well worth the deviation fee over them deciding the flights IMO. You could also fly in a day or two before to insure you will make the cruise if any issues develop last minute that would prevent you from missing embarkation (I speak from experience here). O will only fly you in the day of embarkation. One missed connection will cause a wonderful vacation to go bad in a second.
Mo_Cruising
We decided to take the credit and book our own flights to be able to go in a day early and come back a day later - and got nonstop direct to Venice from Chicago and nonstop back from Rome. Well worth the couple of hundred dollars extra we paid- actually less than a deviation fee. I hate waiting around in Europe in the wee hours for a transfer to another plane.

Actually, we did a Barcelona to Lisbon Oceania cruise in late June and all four legs of our flight were United. I had my doubts, but they all took off and landed with a minute or two of the scheduled times. We also changed our return flights to add an extra day on the end and Oceania handled that well (for a fee!).

I guess we will see. Cannot wait for the end of the month to find out which airlines. I will let everyone know as soon as I find out.
