3 best tours: Snorkeling in Gili Trawangan

' src=

Few places in the world have underwater life like Indonesia. You can literally find anything beneath the sea here: untouched corals, colourful fish, sharks, sea turtles, shipwrecks and much more.

Snorkeling in Gili Trawangan will let you see all of the above, so if you’re here for a holiday, make sure to go snorkeling.

A snorkel tour is a super fun activity for the whole family and you don’t need training. I do recommend however, that you bring your own snorkeling gear although it’s provided on the tours. In these times with Covid-19, it’s best to be extra careful.

So, let’s dive straight in (sorry, I couldn’t resist!) and take a look at the best snorkeling in Gili Trawangan.

Snorkeling from the beach

One of the best things about snorkeling in Gili Trawangan is that you can easily explore the underwater world from the white sandy beaches. All you need is snorkeling gear .

The best snorkeling locations are on the East and North sides of the island. You’ll find  Turtle Point on the North-East part of the island .

However, if you want to be sure to see turtles and discover more snorkeling spots in a day, your best option is to join a snorkeling tour .

By joining a snorkeling trip on a half or full day trip, you can explore all three Gili Islands and decide for yourself which one offers the best snorkeling experience.

I did both, and I recommend you do the same. Going on a tour is the easiest and best way to discover the marine animals and turtles at Gili T.

Are you ready for an underwater adventure?

Rated as the best snorkeling in Gili Trawangan tour, the private Full-Day Gili Islands Snorkeling Trip is definitely among the Gili islands tours you don’t want to miss.

The private boat tour begins with a trip to the sunken Vespa scooters off Gili Trawangan.

You’ll then sail to Gili Meno, where you will snorkle to see coral reefs and hundreds of vibrant fish.

Close by is the haunting beauty of Nest Statues Jason de Caires Taylor – a circle of eerie human sculptures encrusted with coral. You’ll snorkel here before moving on to the main attraction and best Gili island experience: swimming with turtles!

Lunch is served at Gili Meno where you’ll have time to see some of the island and discover the best beaches before you head back.

2. snorkeling with glass bottom boat.

⭐️  RATING:  5.0 from 41 reviews | ⏳  TOUR LENGTH:  4 hours |🤿  BOOK NOW

The Snorkeling Trip By Glass Bottom Boat by Gili Recommended is one of the best snorkeling tours in Gili Trawangan.

You can head directly to the meeting point on Gili Trawangan island, or request a pick-up from your hotel in each of the three Gili islands.

You’ll start by checking out the underwater Vespa on Gili Trawangan before heading over to Gili Meno.

Here, you’ll dive into crystal clear waters, which is the perfect place to see coral reefs, schools of tropical fish, and the underwater statues that help grow coral reefs. Perfect for a great Instagram photo!

This tour is similar to the first snorkeling tour. The main difference is that you’ll be going with a glass-bottom boat to give you a glimpse of what’s below. The glass is not the clearest, but it’s enough to see and experience the fish below.

3. Private snorkeling tour

⭐️  RATING:  5.0 from 41 reviews | ⏳  TOUR LENGTH:  8 hours |🤿  BOOK NOW

This full day tour goes to the same four snorkeling spots as the other tours. There are a few differences, though.

First, the order.

It starts in the early morning at Gili Air’s Fish Garden – a snorkeling spot with various colorful fish and turtles. You’ll then head to the Turtle Sanctuary at Gili Meno for more green sea turtles (this is the highlight, if you ask me). The Gili Meno statue and Vespa point follow before you go for lunch in Gili Trawangan.

The tour lasts about 8 hours and includes lunch at one of the beach restaurants, a bottled water and the two admission tickets for snorkeling.

What to expect on a Gili islands snorkeling tour

Underwater vespa scooter (gili trawangan).

These three snorkelling tours with Viator are similar, but have a few differences. They all include the underwater scooter spot.

You’ll be pretty surprised to find a motorbike off the shores of Gili Trawangan. Along with a few Vespa scooters, it was placed there as a bio-rock sculpture by The Marine Foundation to help with the growth of new corals and making new reefs for marine life.

Underwater statues (Gili Meno)

Another unique snorkeling spot is the underwater statues created by world-renowned underwater sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor . It’s actually an underwater sculpture park, named Nest , with 48 human figures in a circle that symbolises the connection between man and nature.

On a snorkel tour, you’ll explore the eerie beauty of Gili Meno’s underwater statues just off the shore.

Depending on which tour you choose, you’ll have some time to explore Gili Meno.

Gili Meno is a quiet and small island, so you can chill at its pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters – the perfect place to relax and unwind.

Snorkeling with sea turtles

Did you know that the Gili islands are called “the Turtle Capital of the World”?

Turtles can not only be found in the deeper waters but also in shallow water, which means you just need to put on your snorkeling mask and jump in the water. You might be lucky to see one from the beach.

On a snorkeling tour, you’ll be sailed to the turtle spot, which has crystal-clear blue waters. This is the best spot in Southeast Asia to see wild turtles.

You can follow their graceful movements through the water. They seem so peaceful and undisturbed.

Seeing the turtles was definitely the highlight of snorkeling in Gili Trawangan.

Fish garden (Gili Air)

Gili Air is one of the best places for snorkeling, so there’s a high chance of seeing  more turtles as well as colourful fish and marine life like Nemo, squids and starfish around the coral reefs.

Where is Gili Trawangan?

Gili Trawangan (also known as Gili T) is a small island between Bali and Lombok in Indonesia. The island is a couple of kilometers in length and it is pretty flat except for a small hill. It is a popular travel destination and has plenty of shops, restaurants, guest houses, resorts and bars. Gili T also has a great nightlife too and prices are relatively low on the island. Gili T is close to two other islands: Gili Meno and Gili Air. Don’t miss our guide – which Gili island is best ?

What was our experience of snorkeling in Gili Trawangan?

Basks nest sea sculptures Gili Meno

Before we dive in with all the details – we just wanted to take a moment to share our own experience snorkeling on Gili Trawangan. We took a private snorkeling trip which we arranged on the island. We agreed on a meeting time and the driver was around 20 minutes late – which was disappointing as we were aiming to beat the crowds to the Bask Nest (we recommend starting your tour around 6-7am if you want to beat the crowds).

Despite the late start we were very happy with the trip. We started at the Bask nest however filming and photography was tricky with strong currents and a few people there. However, we still made the most of the experience and our boy enjoyed some freediving there.

The backpacking family swimming with turtles Gili Meno Bali

After this we visited a shipwreck (around 500m south of the Bask nest sculptures). This is at a depth of around 15m and we enjoyed some free diving here. The shipwreck is not normally included on shared tours.

And then we visited turtle point and we LOVED swimming with wild turtles in the reef. There was plenty of time to swim with turtles, dive down to see them sleeping on the seabed and also just take in the moment – no filming or photography.

This was a great day for us to create awesome content and amazing memories. If you can afford it we do recommend taking a private trip if possible – and talk to your guide about what you hope to get from the trip.

Is it worth doing a Gili Trawangan snorkeling tour?

Snorkel gili islands

Yes, in our opinion a Gili Trawangan snorkeling tour is WELL worth it! For most people this is an absolute highlight of the Gili islands – the biodiversity is amazing, the water is clear and warm and there are plenty of fascinating things to see in the ocean landscape.

Gili Trawangan snorkeling tour map

Where do you visit on the Gili Trawangan snorkeling tour?

Bask nest 4 coral and sealife

Boats often depart from the beach near Warner Beach Hotel (we have marked this on the map to help you find the right spot!) Check the meeting point with your guide or driver.

The exact destinations you visit will depend on your guide. So we recommend chatting with your guide when you book your trip. As a standard, shared snorkeling tours normally depart around 8am and finish around 11am. They normally include the three most popular sites in the area:

  • Bask nest sea sculptures (off the coast of Gili Meno, depth around 2 – 3m)
  • Blue Reef (varying depth 3m – 5m)
  • Turtle point (depth around 5m)
  • May include a stop on Gili Meno

There is also a shipwreck off the coast of Gili Meno at a depth of around 15m. You can generally see this shipwreck from the surface but it is deep for snorkeling. We loved free diving at this site.

How much does a Gili Trawangan snorkeling tour cost?

If you book directly on Gili Trawangan you can normally find shared snorkeling trips for 120,000IDR – 150,000IDR per person (this is roughly £6.50 – £8 or $8 – $10)

You can also book private boat tours for 500,000IDR – 600,000IDR private boat on Gili (this is roughly £27 – £30).

What is better: a private tour or a shared tour?

Snorkeling boat jumping in

This all depends on your needs and aspirations. Both private and shared tours have their advantages and disadvantages. Here are a few things to consider:

1 Advantages of a shared tour

Here are a few advantages of taking a shared snorkeling tour on Gili Trawangan:

  • Meet other travelers: Shared tours are a great way to meet other people and make friends.
  • Get lower prices for your tour: Shared tours are much cheaper than private tours.
  • Go with the flow: Don’t worry about having to plan your trip just let the guide take you to the top spots and lead the trip

2 Advantages of a private tour

There are a few advantages to booking a private Gili Trawagan snorkeling tour:

  • Beat the crowds: Taking a private snorkeling trip means you can get to busy spots (like the Bask nest) before it gets crowded. If you really want to beat the crowds, set off around dawn at 6am.
  • Go at your own pace: Talk to your guide about your preferred pace. Take rest when you need and leave when you want to.
  • One to one with a guide: It can be very helpful to have a guide one to one in the water. This is especially useful if you’re taking a trip with kids. They can help you and your family explore safely.
  • Get help with photography: Having a one to one with a guide means that they can help you get some awesome underwater shots. Bring a waterproof camera and chat to them about what you’re hoping to capture. This is very important to us as content creators.
  • Visit the sites you’d like and stay as long as you like: On a private tour you can personalize your trip. We got to the Bask nest early to beat the crowds, had some fun free diving at the Meno Shipwreck and then when to explore turtle point. With the help of our guide we got some EPIC shots!

What is the BEST way to book a Gili Trawangan snorkeling trip?

1 book a tour in gili trawangan.

Gili island small boats for snorkelling and island hopping

The cheapest way to book a Gili T snorkeling tour is to book on the island and barter. You can find plenty of local tour operators around the main pier on Gili Trawangan. Just ask around and be willing to barter. Locals are also likely to approach you to sell snorkeling tours on the island. Aim for 120,000IDR – 150,000IDR per person (this is roughly £6.50 – £8 or $8 – $10)

Don’t miss our FULL GUIDE to bartering in Asia – top tips to keep it friendly and make sure you’re paying a fair price.

2 Book a tour online in advance

Free diving

If you prefer the accountability and security of booking online in advance then check out Klook. You can book an epic Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air Private Snorkeling Day Tour (from Lombok) on Klook for around £25 – £55 (depending on the number of people going).

TOP TIP: Take the whatsapp number of your guide so that you can communicate before your trip. They can let you know of any changes or cancellations and you can also find each other more easily at the meeting point.

Always check what’s included in your tour when you book. A Gili Trawangan snorkeling tour should include:

  • Boat transportation to at least 3 snorkeling sites
  • Snorkeling gear (mask, snorkel, and fins)
  • Life jackets (request kids size jackets in advance if needed)

  • Drinking water may be included (check when you book)

What is the best time to take a snorkeling trip on Gili Trawangan?

The Backpacking family Gili islands sunset kids

Snorkeling is one of the most popular activities on the island, and it can be done year-round. However, the best time to snorkel in Gili Trawangan is during the dry season, which runs from May to October.

Why snorkel in the dry season?

During the dry season, the weather is generally sunny and warm, with minimal rainfall. The temperatures are usually 25 – 30℃. The water temperature is also warm – no wetsuit needed.

During the dry season the water conditions are great for snorkeling. The water visibility is excellent (normally 10 – 20m), allowing you to see a variety of marine life, including colorful fish, turtles, and even reef sharks. The water is also calm, with very little wind and few waves, making it easier for snorkelers to explore the underwater world.

The currents around Gili Trawangan are generally mild, particularly during the dry season, which makes snorkeling a safe and enjoyable activity. We found the currents to be pretty strong around the Bask Nest sea sculptures – which made filming and photography a little tricky!

The peak times for snorkeling in Gili Trawangan are usually during the months of July and August, as well as around Christmas and New Year. During these times, the island gets pretty crowded, and tours and activities can book up quickly. Book your snorkeling tour in advance during peak times.

Can you take a Gili Trawangan snorkeling tour in the rainy season?

Yes, it is possible to snorkel all year round on Gili Trawangan. However in the rainy season (November – April) the weather is more likely to be stormy. In very bad weather trips may be canceled at short notice. Furthermore, visibility in the water may be more limited and the water currents can be stronger. The main advantage of snorkeling in the rainy season is the lower number of other people – attractions like the Bask Nest sculptures are less likely to be crowded in the rainy season.

What things can you see on a Gili Trawangan snorkeling tour?

The beautiful tropical waters around the Gili island have an impressive biodiversity. Even on a snorkeling trip in the shallow waters 3m – 5m you can still see an excellent array of sea life. Here are some things you may be able to see on a Gili T snorkeling trip:

Coral Reefs

Turtle dives with papa

The coral reefs around the Gili Islands feature various types of corals, including hard and soft corals. Some common coral species found in the area are brain corals, staghorn corals, table corals, and sea fans.

Sea Turtles

Sea turtle resting in reef

The Gili Islands are an important nesting site for green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) and hawksbill sea turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata). These turtles can be spotted around the islands, particularly in the seagrass beds, where they feed on seagrass and invertebrates.

reef fish

There is a diverse range of reef fish inhabiting the coral reefs around the Gili Islands. Some of the most notable species include clownfish, butterflyfish, angelfish, parrotfish, and wrasses. These fish can be found in various sizes, shapes, and colors, making them a vibrant addition to the underwater landscape.

Black tip reef shark

The Gili Islands are home to several species of sharks, including blacktip reef sharks (Carcharhinus melanopterus), whitetip reef sharks (Triaenodon obesus), and bamboo sharks (Chiloscyllium spp.). While most of the sharks found in the area are relatively small and not considered dangerous, they are still an essential part of the marine ecosystem.

Bumphead parrotfish

bump head parrot fish

One of the most unique and important species found in the waters around Gili Trawangan is the bumphead parrotfish (Bolbometopon muricatum). These large fish can reach up to 4 feet in length and play a crucial role in maintaining the health of the coral reefs. They use their powerful beaks to break off chunks of coral, which they then digest and excrete as sand, helping to create new beaches and sandy areas. Bumphead parrotfish are a protected species in Indonesia, and their presence in the waters around Gili Trawangan is a testament to the health and vibrancy of the marine ecosystem.

The marine ecosystem around the Gili Islands is a vital and diverse ecosystem that supports a wide range of marine life. From colorful reef fish to majestic sea turtles and gentle manta rays, there is always something new and exciting to discover in these crystal-clear waters.

Bali to Gili fast boat

The Golden Queen fast boat is the best and cheapest company that operates this route. Eka Jaya more expensive but there is not big difference in the quality or service. The journey from Bali to Gili Trawangan takes around 2 hours by boat. But in reality the whole journey door to door is likely to take 5 hours or more including pick up and waiting times.

Golden Queen tend to go from Padang Bai (Bali) to Gili T to Gili Air to Lombok and back to Padang Bai in a circular route. So on your way to Gili T the journey is quicker. But on the way back there are a couple of stops.

Tickets cost around 250,000 IDR (£14 or $16) one way and 500,000 IDR return (£28 or $32). You will need to find a local tour operator and barter to get the best prices. Also, you may also need to pay 50,000IDR for transfer two ways from Ubud or Kuta (around £3 or $4).

You also need to pay a harbor tax. It costs 10,000IDR to depart from Bali (Padang Bai) and 10,000 IDR harbour tax to depart from Gili Trawangan (this is around £0.50 or $0.60) Keep your receipts as they tend to check that you have paid the tax.

Tips for staying safe on a Gili Trawangan snorkeling tour

Bask nest 1 sea statues in Bali

Snorkeling trips in Gili Trawangan are suitable for a wide range of ability levels from beginners to experienced swimmers. However, we alway recommend caution when you’re doing adventurous activities. Here are a few safety tips:

  • Wear a life jacket if you’re not a strong swimmer or are new to snorkeling
  • Wear fins to help swim in strong currents
  • Be aware of currents and never swim against them
  • Keep a safe distance from the coral and avoid touching or stepping on it
  • Stay close to your guide
  • Do not feed or harass marine life, as this can be harmful to their natural behavior and ecosystem
  • Always snorkel with a buddy or stay within sight of your guide to ensure that help is close by if needed
  • Stay hydrated by drinking water before, during, and after your tour
  • If you feel unwell or uncomfortable in the water, inform your guide immediately
  • Monitor the weather conditions and avoid snorkeling during storms or when the sea is rough
  • Be cautious of boats in the area to avoid accidents
  • Take a motion sickness pill before the tour if you struggle with sea sickness

TOP TIP: Most boats will also let you bring along a life ring. This is very useful if you’re snorkeling with kids – as it gives you and the kids an additional thing to hold onto in the water.

Are Gili Trawangan snorkeling tours family friendly?

best snorkeling tour gili trawangan

Yes, Gili Trawangan snorkeling tours are family friendly. If you are planning to do a tour with kids, negotiate a fair price for them – they may offer half price and young kids may be free. There are generally no hard and fast rules – so just be confident and barter.

Kids do need to be reasonably comfortable and confident in the water to enjoy a snorkeling trip in Gili. For example, children should be able to swim (at least with a life jacket) and be comfortable putting their face underwater (either holding their breath or using a snorkel). If kids get upset or stressed in the water – they may need to sit this one out.

We do also recommend that kids are accompanied by at least one strong swimming adult. On most tours the guide will be willing to assist families. ALSO we strongly recommend that you contact your guide or boat driver in advance to request kid sized life jackets. These are not included on boats as a standard.

Responsible tourism tips for a Gili Trawangan snorkeling tour

Here are a few tips to protect, preserve and conserve this beautiful marine ecosystem:

  • Choose tour operators that support marine conservation and follow environmentally friendly practices.
  • Use reef-safe sunscreen to prevent harmful chemicals from entering the water and damaging coral reefs.
  • Avoid touching, standing on, or breaking corals, as they are fragile and take years to grow.
  • Do not feed or disturb marine life, as this can disrupt their natural behavior and have negative consequences on the ecosystem.
  • Take only photos and leave only bubbles. Do not collect shells, corals, or any other marine life as souvenirs.
  • Participate in local beach cleanups or support organizations working to protect Gili Trawangan’s marine environment.
  • Bring a reusable water bottle to avoid plastic waste

Categories Asia , Indonesia

If there’s one thing that Gili Trawangan is known for, aside from its nightlife, is its the Gili Trawangan snorkeling in its crystal clear waters with the very high possibility that you’ll see a turtle, or 3!

Most people will go on a Gili Trawangan snorkeling tour which is a good way to see some of the best snorkel spots on Gili Trawangan and is one of the best things to do in Gili T ! However, you can also snorkel from the beach in Gili T and in my opinion, this is  best place to snorkel Gili Trawangan  to see the turtles in Gili Trawangan ! So here’s my guide to the  best Snorkeling on the Gili Islands!

Gili Trawangan Snorkelling from Beach

One of the best things about snorkeling in Gili Trawangan is that you can snorkel from the beach in Gili T which means you don’t need to commit to a snorkelling tour and you can enjoy having the ocean to yourself and decide the time that you want to go!

There are a few places on Gili T where you can go snorkelling from the beach, essentially, the thing to keep in mind is that the  best place to snorkel on Gili Trawangan is on the East and North side of the island . Not in the West on the sunset side of the island.

PLANNING YOUR GILI ISLANDS TRIP

I lived on Gili Trawangan island for 6 months so I know it well! Here are my top posts to help you plan your trip:

  • 30 TOP Things to do on Gili Trawangan !
  • 3 Day Gili Trawangan Itinerary !

Turtle Point Gili Trawangan

Turtle Point on Gili T is where I recommend you go because this is the  best place to snorkel in Gili Trawangan.

You’ll find Turtle Point on the North-East part of the island along the main beach road.

Some of the hotels and restaurants on the beach have signs for Turtle Point because they want you to sit there but you’re best off going right to the top where the beach restaurants disappear and there are just some shacks to rent snorkel equipment from,  get a drink from and some sunbeds.

Snorkeling Gili Trawangan, ship wreck on Turtle Point Beach Gili T

The snorkel hire price in Gili Trawangan is 50,000 IDR for a mask and flippers and you can hire this from any of the guys on the beach. Buy a drink from them, get a sunbed and get in the water! From my experience in Gili T and knowing the locals, your stuff will be safe on the beach and on a sunbed but of course, always be careful with what you leave.

The coral just off of the shore is really amazing and you’ll see lots of fish and you may even see Turtles in here too If you keep swimming a bit further you’ll come to the ‘drop off’ where it gets really deep, if you hang around here for a bit you’re also likely to see the Gili Trawangan Turtles!

The tide is always changing on Gili T, so for the  best time to see turtles Gili T I would recommend checking with the guys on the beach as they know when and where you’re most likely to see turtles in Gili T!

Gili Snorkeling Tour

If you want to go on a snorkelling tour of Gili Trawangan there are endless possibilities. You can join a group tour or hire a private boat if you are already in a group and these are sold by pretty much everyone on the island!

Generally, the snorkelling tours from Gili T will stop at the underwater statues of Gili Meno (more on those below), Gili Meno and Gili Air .

You are pretty much guaranteed to see turtles on a Gili T snorkel tour and another positive to going on a tour like this is that the Gili Air snorkelling is really good too! This way you can go snorkelling from all 3 Gili Islands and decide for yourself what the best Gili Island for snorkelling is.

In terms of the snorkelling Gili Trawangan price, you’ll be looking at 100,000 IDR per person to join a group .

If you’re staying in a hostel in Gili Trawangan, especially one of the party hostels like  Gili Castle , they will organise their own snorkel tours so to get a good group and a good snorkelling Gili Trawangan price, I’d recommend booking with them!

People often ask how to go on an early morning snorkeling tour in Gili Trawangan because it’s true that the scheduled boat tours tend to visit the same places at the same time and the water gets busy. This is when a private tour is best because you can leave at any time you want and this way you’re likely to get the water and the underwater statues to yourself!

Gili Trawangan itinerary, turtle snorkelling Gili T

Gili Island Underwater Statues

There are some very iconic and cool underwater statues in Gili Trawangan!

There is the round statue which is most popular and iconic, however, this underwater statue in the Gili islands is closest to Gili Meno, not Gili Trawangan,  it’s also known as the Nest Sculpture and the BASK Statue.

If you do a Gili Trawangan snorkelling tour , you will stop off at this statue, however, another way to see it is to do a day trip to Gili Meno yourself and visit it early in the morning as later on all of the boats go there and if you’re on a tour you’ll be with lots of other boats and people too. Or take a private boat over early in the morning.

To find the underwater sculptures of Gili Meno , head to BASK which is a hotel still being developed on the west side of Gili Meno. It has a huge BASK sign on the beach so you can’t miss it!

For Gili T snorkelling statues that are off the coast of Gili Trawangan, head to Restaurant Ombak  connected to Villa Ombak , in the South-East part of Gili T and play on the Gili T underwater bikes!  They have some sunken motorbikes including Vespa scooters which are a lot of fun and make for a great Instagram photo.

To find them, firstly, make sure the water is crystal clear, sometimes it is cloudy in this end of the island and if this is the case, you won’t be able to see them!

Start your swim from the pier that is on Ombak Villa Beach and look for the floating crates you can see in the photo below, they are under here!

Gili T Snorkeling, Underwater scooters

The Gili T swings also make for great Instagram photos, Here’s where to find the best swings in Gili T !

Gili Eco Snorkel Tour

If you want to go on a snorkel tour in Gili T with a difference and to give back, head out on an Eco Snorkel Tour with Gili Eco Trust who is an NGO based on Gili Trawangan. They started off to help the marine conservation but now deal with waste management and sustainable eco-tourism on the Gili islands!

GETTING FROM BALI TO THE GILI ISLANDS

There is only one way to get from Bali to the Gili Islands and that’s my fast boat from Padang Bay.

You can wait until you arrive to book your boat or be organised and book it in advance here. Booking in advance is especially good during the summer and Christmas months!

BUY HERE: From Bali: 1-Way Boat Transfer to Gili Trawangan/Gili Air/Lombok

BUY HERE: From all Gili Islands: 1-Way Boat Transfer to Bali

Their Eco Snorkel Tour of Gili T includes getting in the water to  explore their artificial reef restoration and how they are rebuilding Gili’s damaged reefs . The minimum donation price of this snorkel tour is 50,000 IDR which is the same amount the snorkel hire price on Gili T so price-wise, it’s worth it and you’ll learn a lot too!

There are dive sites in Gili Trawangan called Manta Point and Shark Point but if you are just going  snorkeling on Gili T , it’s unlikely that you will see Manta Rays and Sharks in Gili Trawangan as you need to go as far as 20m deep so you will need to go diving in Gili Trawangan for that!

Best Time To Visit Gili Trawangan + Tips

Snorkelling is a year-round activity in Gili Trawangan, with sea turtles visiting the island all year round.

However, probably the best time to visit the island, especially if you are snorkelling, is between April and October.

This is the island’s dry season, so the sun will be shining and visibility in the water will be at its best.

There are times of year on the island when the current and waves can become too strong for snorkelling. This is usually around the end of December and into January.

Either way, if you get the chance you should definitely add Gili T to your Bali itinerary .

What To Expect When Snorkelling In Gili Trawangan

Gili meno underwater statues.

This is definitely one of the most popular things to do in Gili Trawangan snorkelling tour and possibly the most creepiest!

Located just off the shore of Gili Meno, these 48 incredible life-size human sculptures are a very popular photo spot for visitors.

A circle of paired statues embracing, surround another circle of statues lying on the ocean floor. Interestingly, each figure is made from the cast of a real person.

The artwork named Nest, was commissioned by BASK and produced by the world-renowned underwater sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor.

Designed to be a home for coral to form a beautiful machine-made reef, this unique but somewhat eery artwork is certainly a must-see.

Gili Meno Island

Slightly underwhelming, although still worthy of a visit, Gili Meno is a small, sparsely populated tropical island with no motorised vehicles that doesn’t take long to explore.

The smallest of the Gili islands, measuring just 2 km in length and 1 km wide, we spent an hour walking around the island of Gili Meno.

This is the only Gili island that has a salt lake and this is the main attraction on the island. It’s also recommended as a good spot for sunset or sunrise.

We found a bird sanctuary, a sadly over-populated turtle sanctuary and a lot of run down restaurants.

On the positive side, if you want to get away from all the tourists and even perhaps get a beach to yourself, then this is the place to visit.

Hopefully your visit will be better than ours!

Snorkelling With Turtles

This was the moment we’d been waiting for and thankfully it DIDN’T disappoint! This is definitely a must on the Lombok itinerary for all turtle lovers!

We jumped off the boat, all geared up with our snorkels and fins, into the middle of the clear blue waters of the ocean. Whats more, one of our drivers successfully guided us to some really beautiful wild turtles.

There were crowds of tourists nearby but we were lucky enough to find a couple of big boys to ourselves.

Following them at distance, we watched them gracefully gliding through the water and enjoyed every single moment.

Apart from turtles, you may also get to see shoals of colourful tropical fish including surgeon fish and butterfly fish, as well as sea snakes, the easily recognised clownfish and much more.

Snorkelling with turtles was truly amazing and definitely the highlight of our snorkelling Gili Trawangan tour!

Gili T Shipwreck

The Gili islands were used for a while during WW II by Japanese forces as a look-out post and also a prisoner of war camp and this is one of the relics from that time.

The shipwreck was the final stop of our Gili Trawangan snorkelling tour and although it was impressive, it’s better seen whilst diving as it is quite deep under the water.

We could just about make out the old Japanese patrol boat from the surface, but to get amongst it you’ll need a tank to reach the full 45m depth.

With over 70 years worth of corals growing on this wreck, it offers a spectacular diving experience for the more adventurous diver.

After this stop you’ll likely be transported back to Gili Trawagan and have the evening to chill at one of the best beaches in Lombok .

Snorkeling Gili Islands – Which One Has The Best Snorkel Spots?

' src=

Gili Islands is a popular destination along Lombok’s northwest coast. These three idyllic tropical islands, Trawangan, Meno, and Air attract thousands of visitors year by year with their beautiful beaches and laid-back vibes. But you can do a lot more here than soak up the sun and snip cocktail on the white sand as the Gilis have fantastic snorkeling too! You can swim here with turtles, discover underwater statues, and observe vibrant coral gardens in the crystal-clear waters. After visiting all three islands, we prepared this Gili Islands snorkeling guide to tell you which is the best to choose, what the best spots are, and give you some helpful tips on making your trip a breeze.

Table of Contents

Gili Trawangan

Turtle point – gili trawangan, underwater statues – gili meno, turtle beach – gili air, what is the best time to go snorkeling in the gili islands, safety tips for snorkeling in the gili islands, from lombok, what gili island is the best for snorkeling.

The Gili Islands are undoubtedly the most popular snorkeling spots in Lombok , but it might be difficult to decide which one to pick; these picturesque small islands are very similar but also differ a lot from each other, all offering fantastic underwater sights.

To help you, we briefly summarized what Gilis is the best for snorkeling and why. We think Gili Meno has the best snorkeling as it has healthy reefs, underwater statues, a wreck, and rich marine life. Gili Trawangan is the best to see turtles. Gili Air would be our last choice to stay in for snorkeling as it doesn’t have such nice reefs; they are good for beginners, but advanced snorkelers might find them too basic.

The good news is that you don’t need to miss any of the best snorkel spots, as no matter what island you will stay on, you can easily visit other islands’ snorkeling sites on a day trip .

Gili Trawangan, the most popular Gili Island, is famous for its long sandy beaches that are perfect for sunbathing, but snorkelers also find a lot to see here. There are coral reefs almost all around the island except on the busy harbor side, but unfortunately, most of them are not easily reachable for snorkelers.

Sandy beach with snorkeling boats - Gili Trawangan

Still, Gili Trawangan is the best choice if you want to swim with turtles, as these cute creatures live along the island’s northeast reef. This snorkeling site is easily accessible from the shore; no tour is needed!

Gili Meno offers the best snorkeling in the Gili Islands. Its snorkel spots include easy, shore-accessible reefs with rich marine life, including a galore of reef fish, moray eels, and sea turtles, the famous Nest underwater sculpture installation, and the Bounty Wreck.

Gili Air, the quiet Gili Island, is popular among those seeking peaceful island vibes. The island’s reefs have lots of destroyed coral, but still, you can see a variety of reef fish and turtles near the shore in shallow waters.

Tip: Did you know that there are more Gilis around Lombok? Called the Secret Gilis, you find some less-discovered islands along the southwest coast of Lombok, like Gili Asahan , Gili Layar , and Gili Nanggu , which also have fantastic reefs for snorkeling!

Best Gili Islands Snorkeling Spots

Turtle Point on the northeast of Gili Trawangan is the best snorkeling spot to see sea turtles in the Gili Islands. This area is a wide sandy beach between Villa Almarik and Damina Restaurant with a seagrass-covered laguna and coral reef in 3-4 meters deep water before the reef drops off. Here, you can find green turtles that feed on seagrass in the lagoon and also hawksbill turtles that come here to munch on sponges growing on the reef.

Sea Turtle Gili Trawangan

We recommend snorkeling here at high tide. At low tide, it is easy to get injured on the rocks. Pay attention to passing boats and watch out for the currents!

The most popular snorkeling spot in Gili Meno is the Underwater Statue Park. The ” Nest ” installation consists of 48 life-size human figures in a circular formation referring to the circle of life.

The Gili Meno underwater statues were created by the famous sculptor Jason DeCaires . His sculptures can be seen worldwide at places like Mexico Underwater Museum or Museo Atlantico in Lanzarote . The statues are in shallow (5m) water in front of BASK Resort (this is under construction).

Underwater statues - Gili Meno

You can easily access the statues from the shore or book a boat trip. All Gili Islands snorkel tours include a stop at this site, as this is the most famous of all Gili Islands snorkeling spots.

Along the east coast of Gili Air, you find the island’s most popular snorkeling area, Turtle Beach, where, as the name indicates, you can see sea turtles. There are several water entry points on this side of the island, offering easy access to the reef. We think the best is entering the water in front of Turtle Beach Hotel and swimming to the east, as this is the main turtle feeding area.

Healthy corals underwater in Gili Air

The Gili Islands have a similar climate to Bali: there is a long dry season and a short rainy season. The best time to visit the Gili Islands is between April and October. This period has the highest chance of abundant sunshine and cloud-free sky. Also, the summer months offer the best conditions for snorkeling in the Gili Islands with good visibility.

The islands are the most crowded in July and August. Holiday periods like Eastern, Christmas and New Year are also busy with slightly higher room rates.

Clear sky and calm water in summer at Gili Islands

Therefore, if you arrive in the peak season, we suggest arranging your hotel and transfers in advance! If you are flexible, consider coming before or after the main season, preferably in June or September.

The currents are very strong here, and sea conditions can change instantly. Therefore, paying attention to snorkeling safety becomes even more important than in current-free waters. Based on our experience, we recommend following these tips:

  • when visiting any Gili Islands snorkel spot, always wear good snorkeling fins to be able to swim against the current if needed.
  • wearing a snorkel vest is also recommended: in case you drift away, boats can easily notice you and help
  • stay close to the reef and watch out for boats
  • carry a high visibility snorkel buoy for your safety
  • if you feel uncomfortable with swimming in currents or are a beginner, sign up for a Gili Islands snorkeling trip rather than doing it on your own; on boat trips, the staff will choose the safest spots to snorkel, depending on sea conditions; moreover, they can pick you up if end up caught by a stronger current

How To Get To The Gili Islands?

The Gilis have become popular over the past few years. Therefore, they are easily reachable from Bali and Lombok, too. Most boats stop at all three islands, so make sure to buy your ticket to the correct destination.

Traveling between the islands is also easy. Shuttle boats and island hopping cruises operate from the morning to the afternoon at affordable prices.

Before booking your ticket, research what the safest companies are! Some of them have old vessels that often overload and don’t care much about safety, while others take many precautions and offer a high level of service. We will give you tips on the companies we used below.

Also, you need to know that high seas and bad weather conditions are common in the area. Therefore, trips can be canceled. Be prepared to change your travel dates. For the highest chance of good weather, schedule your trip for the dry season.

If you are coming to visit the Gilis after your Bali snorkeling vacation, there are several speedboat companies with daily departures you can choose from with departures from Serangan Harbour and Padang Bai. You find cheap slow ferries like Patagonia Xpress or Eka Jaya . They use bigger boats that are safer in choppy sea conditions.

Patagonia xpress boat on Gili Trawangan

If you have a tight schedule, the best thing is to go on a fast boat. The safest ones are Blue Water Xpress and Gili Getaway . We tried both of them and were satisfied with the service. Unlike other companies, they put the luggage inside the boat. Moreover, we got complimentary tea and coffee after the trip, plus a free transfer to our hotel in Bali.

Freebird speedboat Indonesia

There is a public ferry service between Bangsal and the Gili Islands, which is the cheapest option. The ticket costs 1-2 USD and the trip lasts about 2 hours. A drawback is that it has an irregular schedule. Technically, it leaves when it fills up. Tourist shuttle boats also operate from Bangsal port (~25.000 IDR) between 8 am and 4:30 pm.

The fastest and most comfortable way to get to the islands is to use speedboats. The journey takes about 30 minutes. Fast boats use the Teluk Nare or Teluk Kodek terminals. The best ones are the ones mentioned above, Blue Water and Gili Getaway, since this is also part of their daily route.

Speedboat Gili Getaway

If you arrive from Bali but worry about the sea conditions, fly to Lombok first and book a boat to your favorite island. This way of traveling is highly recommended during January/February when the sea gets choppy.

The three small Gili Islands, fringed by white-sand beaches and coral reefs, are among the most popular tourist destinations in Indonesia, and certainly one of the best snorkeling area in Southeast Asia. The crystal-clear waters of these paradisiacal islands, where turtle-watching is the star attraction, practically guarantee exceptional snorkeling experiences. Gili Trawangan is the largest and the most populated of the three islands. Known as the “party island”, Gili Trawangan is easily reachable from both Bali and Lombok.

How to get to the Gili Trawangan snorkeling spot

Visitors can get to Gili Trawangan mainly from Lombok (Senggigi, Teluk Nare and Bangsal), Nusa Lembongan and Bali, by ferry or speedboat. Inter-island boat transfers are also available (from/to Gili Air, Gili Meno and Gili Trawangan). Contact the various companies for up-to-date information.

Gili Trawangan snorkeling map - Turtle watching areas

Water entrance for snorkeling Gili Trawangan

You can snorkel almost anywhere around the island which is surrounded by coral reefs, but we recommend the two areas marked on the map above. These areas are known for the richness of their marine life and the abundance of sea turtles, particularly green sea turtles .

These two areas are located on both sides of the northeastern tip of the island, well sheltered from waves and currents. Here, the absence of a coral barrier allows snorkelers to explore the reef flat and the reef drop off.

You can enter the water directly from the sandy beaches. Be careful in the northern area (zone 2 on the map), as there is sharp coral very close to the beach (wear water shoes).

Gili Trawangan snorkeling tips

The two snorkeling areas have approximately the same profile. Both cover a 150 to 200 yards-wide area between the beaches and the reef drop-off. At these points, starting from the beach, you will cross a few dozen yards of sandy areas and seagrass (↕2-6ft/0.5-2m), then a sea bed covered with coral (↕6-10ft/2-3m) as far as the reef drop-off (+20ft/6m).

The northern area (zone 2 on the map) is less crowded, and less frequented by boats. The coral is also best preserved there, compared to the eastern area (zone 1 on the map).

Green sea turtle in Gili Trawangan

This spot is certainly the best one in the Gilis to swim with green sea turtles. The turtles feed and rest on the sea grass beds in both areas, sometimes only a few yards from the beach. You can also meet hawksbill sea turtles on the coral areas along the drop-off, especially at high tide.

On Gili Trawangan, like on Gili Meno and Gili Air , the turtles have been long used to human presence and can be easily approached and observed. Avoid disturbing the turtles, which come to the area to feed and rest: don’t chase after them, don’t touch them, and leave them enough room when they come up to the surface to breathe.

School of mixed surgeonfish in Gili Trawangan

While swimming with turtles is the main attraction on the island, the other beauties of the area should not be overlooked. A strip of ten or so yards along the reef drop-off, has a seabed that is full of marine life. The reef is covered with soft and hard corals, and plunges abruptly down toward an immaculate sandy seabed.

Parrotfish are abundant on the drop-off, as are butterflyfish and surgeonfish, often seen in large schools. You will also come across Moorish Idols , batfish, lined surgeonfish , blackbelly triggerfish and sixbar wrasse .

School of batfish in Gili Trawangan

The reefs here were damaged in the past and are slowly regaining their former glory. Don’t touch the coral and be careful not to break it with your swim fins. Watch out for boats that come and go frequently in this area when you are exploring the drop-off area.

Restaurants and accommodation in Gili Trawangan

On Gili Trawangan, you’ll find countless beachside hotels, bungalows, cafés, bars and restaurants.

Sea turtle watching in the Gili Islands

snorkeling-turtle

Sea turtles (both green and hawksbill) are a familiar sight in the Gili Islands. In order to be a responsible snorkeler, be sure to respect the following rules when observing them:

  • Do not attempt to touch or ride sea turtles
  • Stay a distance (6 to 10ft) from sea turtles
  • Do not chase a turtle that is swimming away
  • Avoid sudden movements and allow sea turtles plenty of space when they come up to the surface to breathe

These snorkeling spots are accessible to beginners and kids. You will enter the water gradually from a beach, or in a less than 3ft. deep area. The sea is generally calm, shallow, with almost no waves or currents. These spots are usually located in marked and/or monitored swimming areas. It is not necessary to swim long distances to discover the sea life. This level only apply when the spot experiences optimal sea and/or weather conditions. It is not applicable if the sea and/or weather conditions deteriorate, in particular in the presence of rough sea, rain, strong wind, unusual current, large tides, waves and/or swell. You can find more details about the definition of our snorkeling levels on our snorkeling safety page.

Seabed aspect

Snorkeling spots are part of a wild environment and their aspect can be significantly altered by weather, seasons, sea conditions, human impact and climate events (storms, hurricanes, seawater-warming episodes…). The consequences can be an alteration of the seabed (coral bleaching, coral destruction, and invasive seagrass), a poor underwater visibility, or a decrease of the sea life present in the area. Snorkeling Report makes every effort to ensure that all the information displayed on this website is accurate and up-to-date, but no guarantee is given that the underwater visibility and seabed aspect will be exactly as described on this page the day you will snorkel the spot.
