“I’m not going to drink Scotch whisky out of a plastic drink bottle.”

“Desperate times call for desperate measures.”

And so goes the conversation when two of Channel 9’s Travel Guides , Kevin and Janetta, are faced with the prospect of finding clean glasses in a slovenly Argentinian hostel kitchen.

Check out our interview with Stack and Mel from travel guides. They tell us why they nearly missed out on the show.

Dubbed ‘The Snobs’, Kevin and Janetta are the show’s resident purveyors of luxury travel. The well-travelled retirees – who have over 20 luxury cruises under their belt – know what they like, and what they like is nothing less than the best. So how in the world had they found themselves in that unkempt kitchen?

Interview: Travel Guides' Kevin and Janetta

Kevin and Janetta are one of five groups of ordinary Aussies who comprise the cast of Channel 9’s Travel Guides. The show sends the groups around the world to take on the job of professional travel critic – with experiences ranging from budget to premium. Entertainment ensues as the Travel Guides venture from country to country, which over the past three seasons have ranged from Austria, Taiwan, Israel, Sri Lanka and beyond.

Travel Guides season three has just wrapped up airing on Channel 9, and casting for the next season is currently open. If you think you’ve got what it takes to explore the world and take on the once in a l ifetime experiences the show undoubtedly has in store, head to travelguidestv.com.au . Casting closes 22 April 2019.

In the meantime, check out our interview with Kevin and Janetta, where they talk us through some of the ups and downs of the show.

What have been some of the most challenging moments for you during the show?

Not knowing where we’re travelling to until we got to the airport was certainly a challenge. As travellers, we like to be organised and prepared and although the element of surprise makes a good change, missing out on a very important part of the travel process, being the planning, can be challenging. We’ve always said that travel has three parts – the anticipation with the planning, the excitement of the actual trip, and the memories we keep for years.

Which locations have taken you most by surprise?

In season one we were surprised by Oman. We hadn’t been there before and were blown away by how the country and particularly the city of Muscat, was dragged into the twentieth and twenty-first century from a sheltered and thirteenth-century backwater in a matter of 40 years. Israel also surprised us – the diversity and tolerant sense of inclusion was not what we’d heard from media reports. Just proves that you must see things for yourself to get your own take on situations – and really, for us, that’s what travel is all about.

Unfortunately, we were also surprised that the Philippines had no definite cuisine. We would’ve thought that a country with so many ethnic influences over history would have developed a notable cuisine. Hawaii has become outrageously expensive, but I suppose that’s no real surprise.

Are there any you would go back to experience ‘your way’?

We would definitely love to repeat the European river cruise (we’ll take any excuse to get on a ship). Although we’d been to Israel before there’s plenty to do and see, so a return visit wouldn’t be out of the question. We loved Canberra and saw a different side to the capital and could happily spend more time there. Italy, of course always beckons so we’ll be back there for sure .

What made you decide to go for Travel Guides in the first place, knowing you would likely not be travelling the way you’re used to?

Any travel is good so the thought of testing the waters with someone else in charge of the planning was too good an opportunity to pass up. When it comes to travelling, we’re always up for a challenge and Travel Guides certainly promised that. Even though the process and experiences may not be what we’d necessarily plan ourselves, we were able to ameliorate some of the difficulties and unfamiliar experiences by using points or dollars to upgrade on flights where possible. The long hauls can be killers .

Interview: Travel Guides' Kevin and Janetta

Would you consider yourselves more open-minded in your approach to travel now?

We’d have to say that we’re probably more open to new things as a result of Travel Guides. We still like the ‘nice’ things that travelling has to offer but having been tossed out of our comfort zone with experiences such as climbing Masada and bungee jumping at 60, we’re pretty well up for anything now. Skydiving – we’ll see!

Words of advice for future Travel Guides?

To any future Travel Guides we’d have to say: “be prepared for any experiences and do them, keep an open mind and literally enjoy the wild ride”. Also, constantly remind yourself how lucky you are to get this amazing opportunity.

You’re both very well-seasoned travellers; what are some of your tried and tested travel tips you’ve picked up over the years?

Strangely, one of our most valuable tips is incredibly basic. Take a collection of Ziplock plastic bags with you on your travels – you’d be surprised how many times and for how many different reasons you’ll use them. But on a more esoteric note, our advice would be to not cheap out and miss out on unique experiences for the sake of a few dollars, euros, yen or pesos. You don’t go on holidays to save money and the airfares and accommodation are only a part of the experience.

Which destinations are still on your bucket list that you still haven’t travelled to?

We’ve always wanted to go to Iceland (even before it became a ‘must-see’ destination) so hopefully Travel Guides have that country on their list. We’d also love to see Scotland, the Arctic Circle and parts of Spain and Portugal that we need to explore. And for the record, we don’t call it a ‘bucket list’. The reality, at our age, is a bit too daunting. Let’s just say we want to see this world before we leave it!

9 best electric toothbrushes for your suitcase

9 best electric toothbrushes for your suitcase

We are currently based in….

Both: A little town in Central Victoria – Maldon. It looks pretty much like what it did during the Gold Rush of the 1860s when it was founded.  We moved here permanently from Abbotsford when we retired and love country life.

I grew up in…

Janetta:  Malvern – A suburb of Melbourne

Kevin: Mount Waverley – a less salubrious suburb than Malvern.

I got my first passport when…

Janetta: I was a late starter as a traveller and my first passport was issued to me at the age of 28. That was back in the day when passport stamps were things to collect.

Kevin:   If I could have arranged it, I would have had a passport at the age of five but I was actually 18. I considered it my ticket to ride.  I filled that first with stamps before its expiry date.

London, England.

My first holiday memory is…

Janetta: As a child, I’d travel around the country with my parents and sister in a caravan (I know, ironic, right? Me in a caravan!)

Kevin: My first real holiday was while I was working for TAA (carbon dating me) in 1975. At the very first opportunity I flew to London and drove around the UK for a few weeks. I never lost the taste of travel from that first trip.

See also: Travel Guides holiday snobs’ secret to saving $1000 on a cruise

I’ve been to...

Both: Well it’s probably easier to list the countries we haven’t visited. Zambia’s one of them. Actually, the world’s so huge, there’s still plenty more to explore. When you’ve cruised all over the world, the countries and cities add up pretty quickly.

My favourite place in Australia is…

Both: Sydney. We just love the beauty of the harbour and the vibe of the city, So, why haven’t we moved there? There’s still time.

The place I’d love to visit in Australia is…

Kevin: We’ve both always had the urge to visit the Flinders Ranges in South Australia, but we’ve never been. It’s a destination we’d like to drive to and we’ve always said that our road trips will be during our retirement. We’re retired now so we have no excuse. But if we have to camp, it better be top of the range.

The thing about travel I missed during self-isolation is…

Kevin: The smell of aviation fuel. It’s the sweet perfume of travel.

Janetta: Some may find this strange but I miss the research, planning and packing – they’re an adventure in themselves. And then of course is the actual trip.

If all the international borders were lifted tomorrow, the first place I’d want to go is…

Kevin: We both agree on this. While we’ve been to Spain a couple of times we want to explore further. Now, San Sabastian is high on our hit list.

Janetta: I always believe food from a certain region tastes better where it originates, and I can hear the Basque Cheesecake calling me.

These self-professed “holiday snobs” hate settling for anything second-rate.

The place I’ve visited most often is...

Both: We both love Sydney and can’t get enough of that beautiful harbour. We honestly couldn’t count the number of times we’ve visited either for work or pleasure and loved it every time. When we research a hotel in Sydney, a harbour view is essential.

The place that most surprised me was…

Kevin: While filming Travel Guides, we were blown away by Israel. It sits on the forgotten side of the Mediterranean and is so liberal, inclusive and beautiful, and so are the people. It wasn’t what we expected at all.

Janetta: And the shopping and fashion? - well that’s just another thing to love about the place.

View over the beach in Tel Aviv, Israel, Tel Aviv.

The place that didn’t live up to expectations…

Both: Surprisingly, it’s Venice. When we arrived, the city was drowning under the weight of a couple of million fellow tourists. The shops were filled with tacky foreign-made souvenirs and it was difficult to see the city’s beauty. The second visit however, proved us wrong...we succumbed to its magnetism.

The advice I’d give to young travellers is…

Both: Adopt the NIKE tag line – Just Do It! The older you get the richer you become from travel experiences. Building your travel wealth from an early age is imperative. The things you do as an 18 year-old traveller are very different from that of a 60 year old, but just as rewarding. Start travel banking now.

My holidays are mostly devoted to… (eg, the outdoors, eating and drinking, history, arts and culture, adventure)

Both: We’re not adrenaline junkies or thrill-seekers but we love exploring on foot. We can spend hours walking around a new city and love turning a corner to find a new food or wine treasure. It’s a way to burn off the calories that travel seems to bestow. Many of the European cities are crammed with incredible galleries and museums. It’s hard not to be pulled in by their booty.

The sickest I've been on holiday…

Janetta: We were on a European cruise and I was struck down with Norovirus which ran through the ship. Staying confined to our cabin for three days was torture. The world was literally passing by me and Kevin kept reporting on the magnificent meals being served in the magnificent dining room. So compassionate!

Kevin: I fell victim to a dodgy ice cream in India (I know, it should have been a vindaloo) I felt like a visiting Australian cricketer- knocked for six by India!

The souvenir I always buy…

Kevin: If we had bought souvenirs from all the places we’ve been to, we wouldn’t be able to move in our house.

Janetta: However, that gives me licence to seek out the local fashion. Some of my favourite ‘souvenirs’ are clothes I’ve bought along the way)

Catch Kevin and Janetta on Travel Guides.

The worst thing that’s happened to me while travelling…

Janetta: My first overseas trip was to Japan, on a cruise. I packed way too many bags and wore the most inappropriate shoes. Of course, I tripped and sprained my ankle badly. Carrying all those bags on my own after that was not fun.

Kevin: I was robbed while working as a travel writer in Ireland. I lost everything – passport, cash, computer, all my work. My entire travel life support system probably ended up in the River Liffey.

The most interesting person I've met on a plane is…

Janetta: I was chatting to a man sitting next to me in First Class from LAX to MEL but never got his surname until he gave me his business card on arrival. He was fascinating and said he was a confectioner. I asked him if I could give him a lift into town when we landed which he politely declined. His card read: JF Mars. I think he could afford his own lift into Melbourne.

Kevin: We managed to score an upgrade to first class from Dubai to Melbourne a year or two ago and was sure we’d be rubbing shoulders with at least one huge celebrity. Alas, the cabin was empty except for us. Sigh. Still waiting to meet someone interesting. I worked at Perth Airport back in the eighties. My office was airside. Charles and Diana were arriving at the airport without an official welcome party. With airside access, I stood at the steps of the aircraft with one of my colleagues, held my hand out and shook both their hands. The Royals must have thought we were someone special.

The best/weirdest things I’ve eaten while travelling was...

Kevin: In Argentina, we dined on Piranha. Oh well, better to eat them than be eaten by them!

My go to dish for room service is…

Kevin: Well that depends on where we are in the world and what sort of a hotel we’re staying in. If the local speciality isn’t on the list (and most room service menus are so homogenised these days) we’ll resort to a club sandwich. It’s been a bit of a quest for us to find the world’s best club sandwich. The Peninsula Hotel (one of our all-time favourites) in Hong Kong is the current award winner. Footnote: A good club sandwich must come with a side of mayonnaise.

The best hotel I've ever stayed in…

Janetta: The Peace Hotel in Shanghai. This is an incredibly old and grand hotel with more history than the ancient Greeks. The walls could tell a million stories. Its glory is a little faded now but that’s its charm. In the basement is a famous jazz club that comes alive every night. The musos would have been in their 80s and were sensational. We loved every minute of the stay.

Always bring your ziplock bags.

The travel tips I’d like to share are…

Kevin: First – pack ziplock bags in a range of sizes, they’ve got so many uses. Second –adjust to the time zone as quickly as you possibly can – there’s too much to see and do and plenty of time for sleeping when you get home. Learn a few commonly used words in the local language – even though you’ll probably be answered in perfect English, at least you’re trying to assimilate. Be a traveller not a tourist.

Janetta: The most useful tip? ...If you’re trying to smuggle duty free booze onto a budget cruise ship, decant it into smaller plastic bottles. They have x-ray machines that detect alcohol bottles and will confiscate them. The ignominy of retrieving your suitcase from the ships lobby with a huge “ALCOHOL” sticker plastered over it is the travel equivalent of a public flogging. (Of course, we’ve only been told this tip, not a firsthand experience. No, of course not!)

Travel has taught me...

Kevin: More than any school or university could. Things have to be seen and experienced firsthand to round out an education, and the world offers plenty to see.

Janetta: And we’ve still got a lot to learn.

Travel Guides: “I’d rather be a snob, than a bogan”

Drinks in hand, enjoying jetsetting, but kevin & janetta have no issue with how they are portrayed on nine's travel guides..

  • Published by David Knox
  • on April 18, 2023
  • Filed under News , Top Stories

Intrepid travellers Kevin Moloney & Janetta Stones recently finished filming their 7th season of Travel Guides for Nine.

In a joint interview the retired couple spoke with TV Tonight about their time on the hit Nine series, proudly toasting the finer things in life and acknowledging how their reviews provide a perfect contrast to other cast reviews.

How were you cast?

Janetta: I saw an ad on Channel Nine that said, ‘If you can give up three months next year, and you like traveling, apply here.’ We’d just retired at that stage so I said to Kevin we should apply, and he said…

Kevin: ‘What would they want with old things like us?’

Janetta: So that was my cue to go down the track and apply.

Kevin: We didn’t know anything about the show but we saw an episode of the British Travel Guides and we thought, ‘Oh, God, what have we got ourselves into? It looked pretty terrible!’

The Australian version is very different, thankfully. So we were thrilled to get involved in the first series. And then it just grew its own legs, and here we are at Season 7.

How do you feel about the way the show portrays you?

Janetta: We come across exactly as we are in real life. We like the nice things of life.

Kevin: We’re are a bit older, a bit more discerning them than some of the others. In the first season they introduced us as ‘Travel Snobs.’ But we’re fine with that.

Janetta: If it means we don’t like camping, we prefer to go business class, five stars, like fine food and wine, that’s what it is.

I’d rather be a snob than a bogan, but we’re not snobs by any stretch of the imagination. We just know what we like, and what we don’t.

Kevin: Nothing is scripted. No words are put into our mouths. If we don’t like something, we’re free to say we don’t like it. But I think that’s what people can relate to.

Janetta: We have fans in the street quite literally from 8 to 80. People will say that ‘You’re just like my parents,’ or ‘I want to be like you when I get older.’

What have been some of the more memorable things you’ve done on the show?

Kevin: Last year, or the year before, I jumped out of a plane. Now, I would never think of doing that on a holiday. So there are situations you find yourself in and we end up liking some things that we would never have even tried.

Janetta: They juxtapose us against pretty much nearly all of the other groups, which makes makes the show what it is. What we like, they don’t.

Kevin: That’s the magic of the show. ….One of the places we went to was the Arctic Circle. Janetta doesn’t like the cold so somwehere like that wouldn’t really feature on our travels. But we absolutely loved it.

Janetta: It was so memorable, really, really incredible.

travel guides kevin

Tell us about behind the scenes, and how you shoot the show?

Janetta: We don’t know where we’re going until we actually get to the airport. We only get an email the night before telling us where we have to be, and what sort of clothes to wear. That’s very much against how we are, which is being very organised.

We could be doing anything from FinAir business class, that we did on our last trip, or we could be doing the Perth – London flight, middle seat, third back row in economy.

Kevin: For 17 hours solid. That was pretty close to torture.

Janetta: We quite often will use our points or money to upgrade.

Kevin: The older you get, the more comfort you need.

How much interaction do you have with the other cast?

Kevin: We all travel together. But on camera, we don’t have any interaction whatsoever. They’re doing their thing and we’re doing our thing, and we try not to influence each other.

We don’t talk about the experiences we do together. So if, say the Fren family or the Target boys or Stack & Mel, have a certain opinion on an activity, our opinion might be different. So we don’t want to influence them with our opinion, and they won’t influence us with theirs

What is your essential item to take on aeroplane?

Kevin: Noise cancelling headphones.

Janetta: I have an e-reader with me.

Kevin: It really depends on what class you’re in, and the how long the flight is. Some people take neck pillows, all that sort of rubbish. I try to have the least amount of stuff around me when I’m on an aeroplane. I hate stuff on the floor and all over the place. The less I have the better.

travel guides kevin

Where do you travel to this season?

Kevin: We did 10 episodes. We went to Europe twice, Africa twice.

Janetta: We only did two episodes in Australia in Melbourne and the Riverina, but also South Africa, Zambia, England, Scotland, Croatia, Helsinki, Borneo, Vanuatu, New Zealand. Pretty much for 4 months we aren’t on any particular timezone.

Kevin: You come back from Europe or the Americas or wherever, and you’re only home for two or three days. There’s no way you get back into your home timezone. So you’re just floating for 4-5 months.

Janetta: Croatia was absolutely beautiful.

Kevin: We saw a different side of Croatia than we had in our last trip, which was our own holiday a few years ago. Travel Guides took us to different places in Croatia, which was sensational. But for me it was probably Lapland (Finland)…..to be knee deep in freshly powdered snow was an experience that I’ll never forget.

Have you ever met narrator Denise Scott?

Kevin: No. I’d like to, I like Denise, she does a great job.

It’s now 7 seasons, how long do you see yourselves doing the show?

Janetta: Each series we get home and we say ‘Never again.’ But I think it must be like childbirth. I’m terrible at the time on that flight home. But once it’s over you forget about it, and you’re ready to go again.

Travel Guides returns 7:30pm Wednesday on Nine.

Love this show and all the participants…..their differences make it what it is….👌

Very good amateur actors, get paid to overact and over dramatise, but people like watching it🤦‍♂️

Interesting behind the scenes look at Travel Guides. Thanks, Mr. Knox.

The casting on this show is the best, it’s a great mixture of different people who like different things and but they’re all so likeable and great personalities, there’s not one person I don’t like!!

The differing personalities makes the show.

Love the show and Janetta and Kevin are my favorites. To me they are the least irritable and make the most sense in their evaluation of the places they visit (not like the ‘over the top’ Fren family – where I turn down the sound when they are on – LOL)

I think you hit the nail on the head regarding the appeal of Kevin and Janetta, they say it as it is and provide really useful feedback on their stay, which is why they are my favourite too. I also quite like the Target boys as everything seems to be so new to them, it’s like watching them grow as people.

I really enjoy Kevin and Janetta too, they are entertaining and perhaps share a similar perspective, I like some of the nice things too, but am younger and can’t necessarily afford them!

Not snobs at all, nor old things (age is only how you feel) just sensible people who enjoy travelling and a bit of luxury. They don’t try to outdo each other with the comedy, they certainly don’t put each other down because they are afraid to partake in an activity unlike some on the show and they certainly don’t make Australians look like bad tourists with OTT antics.

I love these two! They give great balance to Travel Guides! Love this show (it’s one of my favorites) and I’m realling looking forward to the return on Wednesday!

The british version has a snobby couple as well.

the british show has not been on since 2015 ….

Love this show,so glad it’s back for another season.

Now, Travel Guides is back for its latest season and will  return to Channel 9 on Wednesday, April 19 at 7:30pm .

While fans are very keen to see the friendly faces on our screens once more, there have been some changes to the traditional  Travel Guides cast.

Cowgirl Mel - who appears on the show with her identical twin sister, Stack - is taking some time off from this season to be with her one-year-old daughter, Savannah.

However, Stack's new partner remains in the family, with brother Josh joining the team in Mel's place.

With that in mind, meet the Travel Guides cast for 2023...

Meet Josh! He'll join sister Stack in place of Mel this season.

Stack and Josh

There will be a switch-up to the traditional pairing of identical twins and country cowgirls, Stack and Mel. This year, you'll see Stack and Josh. While not an identical twin, Josh is the sisters' younger brother.

As was the case with his older siblings, Josh is a little wary about travelling beyond the family's home in outback Queensland. In fact, he's never been out of Australia (until now).

While Stack and Mel were more comfortable at a local rodeo, they felt like fish out of water on their Travel Guides adventures. And Josh will be just the same!

Will he be as game as his sisters? We're sure this construction worker will do just fine.

matt-brett-travel-guides

Matt and Brett

Bona fide travel addicts Matt and Brett joined the show in season four, hailing from Newcastle in New South Wales.

While Matt is organised, and packs his outfits into plastic bags via the suitcase, Brett is much happier going along for the ride, leading to a delightful Bert-and-Ernie energy that makes for great TV.

They’re also hilarious, giving biting commentary, and always making the audience laugh.

Everything you need to know about the Travel Guides cast

  • 28 May 2021

Travel Guides is one of Australia’s most beloved television shows, and with its  crazy adventures and hilarious reviews, it's not hard to see why.

WATCH BELOW: Travel Guides: The Fren family visit a farm

Channel Nine’s   Travel Guides   has taken off this year, with the reality show seeing everyday holidayers act as travel critics.

The very different groups of ordinary Aussies go on the same week-long holiday – reviewing the cuisine, accommodation, activities and local sights, where they tell it how they see it.

So, here’s everything that you need to know about this season’s cast.

travel guides matt brett

Matt and Brett.

Matt and Brett

New to the block are Matt and Brett, who have been together for 18 years and married for seven.

Matt, 45, works for the local council while Brett, 51, is a primary school teacher, and the two love to travel - meaning they have a lot of opinions on how holidays should be.

The difference between the two is that while Matt loves to organise everything, do everything and eat out for every meal, Brett is happy to go along for the ride.

They are quick with biting commentary on everything around them but are generous, kind and love a laugh.

travel guides fren family

The Fren family.

Fren family

The Frens are well equipped to cope with stressful family situations and can always find the funny side of any holiday disaster.

Mark, 59, is the upbeat and forthright dad, so when on holiday he loves to negotiate hotel room upgrades.

For more than 30 years he has been happily married to Cathy, 57, whose quirky sense of humour and distinctive laugh is contagious.

Together they have two kids, Victoria, 27, who is always ready to voice an opinion, and Jonathon, 29, who is the more reserved one of the bunch.

The Frens are unafraid to give anything a go, which often leads them into unpredictable situations.

travel guides kev dorian teng

Kev, Dorian, and Teng.

Kev, Dorian, and Teng

This trio, made up of Kev, Dorian and Teng, are all good mates who share a love of junk food, computer games, music and movies.

Kev, 28, is the sensible pop-culture expert with an arts degree, while Dorian, 24, is laidback, polite and studying to become a teacher.

As for Teng, 25, he's the risk-taker who has deferred uni for the last three years and is always looking for a good time.

All are Australian-born and their combined Chinese, Greek and Vietnamese heritage gives them a unique take on the world.

Despite Dorian’s Greek heritage, they often refer to themselves as “the three Asian boys” who are fearless and willing to give anything a go.

travel guides kevin janetta

Kevin and Janetta.

Kevin and Janetta

Kevin, 63, and Janetta, 69, describe themselves as 'holiday snobs', as they want the best of the best for everything.

The pair, who have been married for over three decades, don’t have children, and are passionate wine enthusiasts.

They also love exploring big cities, but before hitting the road, they make sure they do their research to ensure they experience the best holiday.

And if the quality or service isn’t up to scratch they will not hesitate to make a complaint - earning them the “we don’t suffer in silence” catchphrase.

travel guides stack mel

Stack and Mel.

Stack and Mel

Identical twin cowgirls, Stack and Mel, are still relatively new to the travel game, and are a little wary when venturing anywhere beyond the Outback. Even so, they are willing to give anything a crack.

The girls, 31, are big on the rodeo scene, competing together and against each other in roping events. They have travelled extensively around country Australia for competitions.

Having spent most of their lives in the bush, they are blissfully unaware of other cultures, languages and customs - but this doesn’t stop them voicing an opinion.

They are used to roughing it and are not easily impressed by fancy holidays, and would much rather camp outdoors with their horses and dogs rather than stay in the city.

The Travel Guides pick their favourite destinations

Profile picture of Scott Ellis

Through six seasons, six continents and 36 countries, the Travel Guides have shown us the world. They’ve been soaked, poked, wined and dined, and generally had experiences the rest of us could only imagine… but what was their favourite trip?

That’s the big question.

The Fren family from left: Jonathon, Victoria, Cathy and Mark.

“For a trip to impress us, it has to surprise and delight, and Israel did that in spades,” Kevin , watching back through clips of his memorable journeys with partner Janetta, says.

“How good is Japan?” Cathy Fren asks when her family rewatches their trip to Tokyo, giggling along (as usual) when dad Mark tries desperately to find a girlfriend for son Jono.

“Mauritius!” cowgirl Stack says when she and twin sister Mel review their time on the Indian Ocean island.

Couple Kevin and Janetta prefer their travel five-star.

“It was our 30th birthday – we went to the races, put on pretty dresses we bought from the Op Shop!”

Clearly, every place they’ve been has left an impression, but when they have to rate the best culture, accommodation, food and experiences to come up with the one place they’ve loved most, things get tricky.

For some, like Victoria Fren, the accommodation can be a huge part of how much she loves somewhere. “I’m not leaving the hotel!” she declares as she looks over the uber-luxe resort she visits in Greece.

For others, it’s about what you do.

Stack and Mel won’t be returning to the show next year.

“We like to put our money into experiences, instead of where you stay,” Stack says.

And for all the Guides, it’s about how much fun they got to have.

“I got to watch Kevin dangle naked off the side of a boat!” a delighted Teng recalls of his time in Queensland’s Whitsundays with his mates Dorian and Kev.

So, what was the ultimate destination? As usual, the teams can’t agree, but their choices will fill bucket lists around the country.

Travel Guides' 'snobs' Kevin and Janetta on the move, list their 100-year old home

Travel Guides' Kevin and Janetta selling their 100-year old home in Maldon, Victoria

  • Owners: Janetta Stones and Kevin Moloney
  • Address: 21 Boundary Road, Maldon, Victoria
  • Type of property: A renovated 100-year-old cottage with a Tuscan-inspired garden
  • Price guide: $1.45 million-$1.55 million

For the past eight years, Janetta Stones and Kevin Moloney have travelled the world as critics on Channel Nine’s Travel Guides .

Between trips to places like Tokyo, Argentina, India and Morocco, they’ve returned to their 100-year-old home in the small gold rush-era town of Maldon in Central Victoria.

Declared a Notable Town by the National Trust in 1966, Maldon is a tourist destination known for its well-preserved 19th-century buildings, historic railway station and relics from its gold mining past.

'We’ve had some really lovely times just having a glass of wine, looking at the sunset and talking about our travels,' Stones says. Photo: Supplied

“From the front of the house, we look at old gold diggings – a lot of the history of Maldon is right outside the front door,” Stones says.

“There’s always something going on in town. From closing the street off to have a twilight dinner for 1000 people to folk festivals, every second weekend there’s something on.”

Originally from Melbourne, the couple moved to their former weekender in Maldon after retiring in 2012 and bought their current home – a five-minute walk from the centre of town and flanked on three sides by bush and crown land – in 2018.

While it “required a lot of love”, the two jumped on the opportunity to reinvigorate the old property, drawn to its views of Mount Tarrengower and the chance to turn a self-contained one-bedroom cottage into the perfect guest house.

The couple embarked on a year-long renovation, raising ceilings, removing internal walls and ripping out old carpet. Photo: Jellis Craig

“I suppose you could call it a renovator’s delight,” Moloney says. “We’d often drive past it and it’d been on the market for quite some time, but I could really see the potential in it.”

Living between the cottage and the main house, they embarked on a year-long renovation, raising ceilings, removing internal walls, ripping out old carpet and building a wrap-around verandah.

While the revamp was extensive, they were careful to retain the home’s historic features, including its quaint weatherboard facade, wood-panelled ceilings, and bevelled glass French doors and windows.

“The last place we had was sort of lodge-like and I wanted to go with what I call the ‘Edelweiss theory’ here – small and white, clean and bright,” Moloney says, referencing lyrics from The Sound of Music. “We wanted it to be light and airy with clean lines.”

Channelling his passion for gardening, Moloney took on the challenge of transforming the outside, taking inspiration from their travels to create a Mediterranean-style space complete with olive trees, a grapevine-covered pergola and a lush walled lawn.

“Central Victoria can be a pretty grey and dry place in summer; I wanted to create something that was very green,” he says. “Everyone said you can’t grow grass in Maldon but I wanted to prove them wrong.”

It has a Tuscan feel, Stones adds. “All the levels of brickwork have been bagged in a terracotta look.”

The separate cottage with living space, kitchen and bedroom with an en suite has proven a hit with friends, family and paying guests. Photo: Jellis Craig

The resulting home is one that they are happy to return to after trips away. They spend time reading in its “sun-trap” courtyard, host yearly garden parties, and often look through Moloney’s extensive travel journals, reminiscing about their experiences.

“We’ve had some really lovely times just having a glass of wine, looking at the sunset and talking about our travels,” Stones says.

The separate cottage – named The Little Cottage (TLC for short) and made up of a living space, kitchen and bedroom with an en suite – has proven a hit with friends, family and paying guests.

“We’ve spent so much time in B&Bs around the world and said, ‘If this was ours, this is how we’d do it,’ ” Stones says.

“After many years of threatening to do it, we are actually running our own, and it’s exactly as we would like it – lots of cute touches and we get the most amazing reviews.”

The 1100-square-metre terraced block also features a studio with its own street address. Moloney uses it as an office space for his work as a justice of the peace.

While they’ve had some “amazing times” at the home, the couple have recently decided to put it on the market, with plans to make a sea change north to Lake Macquarie in NSW.

“We don’t think it’s ever too late to try something new,” Stones says. “We’ve got a lot of years left in us and we just want to keep trying new things.”

Kevin and Janetta have been married for 30 years. Although semi-retired, Kevin is a part-time travel writer and food critic. Janetta has roots in travel – she is a former airline employee.

They describe themselves as “high-end and discerning”.

They are regular jet-setters who spend a lot of time seeking out the best accommodation, food and wine they can afford. They expect the best and proclaim, “We don’t suffer in silence”. If quality or service isn’t up to scratch the manager will know about it. While Kevin uses his words, Janetta has her “death stare”.

Kevin and Janetta don’t have kids and are not keen on visiting ‘family’ holiday spots.

Needless to say, Kevin and Janetta would struggle in a campervan or a dive motel.

When they retired Kevin and Janetta (or “Jet” as Kevin calls her) sold their house in Melbourne and moved to their weekender in the country so they could afford to travel for at least 4 months each year.

They are big wine aficionados and recently upgraded to business class on a flight to Italy using BWS points.

A guide to Ghent, Belgium's rebellious, unsung city

Youthful and rebellious, Ghent is stepping out of Bruges’s shadow as a Belgian canal-side classic

A view of Ghent's three towers of the Belfry, St Nicholas' Church and St Bavo's Cathedral from St Michael's Bridge.

In the 16th century, Ghent lost it all on the wrong bet. Built around rivers and canals, it was Europe’s second-largest urban centre, falling just behind Paris. When Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, who ruled over Belgium, raised taxes to fund military action abroad, the city refused to pay out. They’d already given a fair share, locals argued, and surely Charles, who had been born in Ghent, wouldn’t turn on his home. In response, he marched into the city with his army, stripping it of its finery and parading its leaders in their undershirts, nooses around their necks.

Today, you can find evidence of the city’s illustrious past in its historical centre, home to a UNESCO-listed belfry and the Gravensteen, a stone fortress said to have been inspired by Crusader castles. And while its heyday is now behind it, Ghentians proudly tell the story of their fall from grace as proof of their rebellious streak.

This spirit survived, the sign of a place that’s at ease with its identity: socially conscious and full of fresh ideas. Initiatives like Nucleo are repurposing empty spaces into artists’ studios, and inviting the public to peer in once a year — in 2024, the open day is on 5 May. Meanwhile, chefs are experimenting with the earth’s pantry, casting Ghent as a European vegetarian capital. This energy is partly due to it being Flanders’ biggest university city: out of some 267,000 residents, over a quarter are students. This ensures a near endless supply of speciality-roast coffee in the Overpoort student district, and nightlife ranging from candle-lit wine bars to sweaty warehouses, reverberating with the kind of techno more often associated with Berlin.

The city was named 2024 European Youth Capital by the European Youth Forum — and it’s no surprise. In April, it will celebrate the accolade as part of the biennial Ghent International Festival, which will feature opera as well as dancers on roller-skates. Events will continue throughout the year, with locals as young as 15 invited to contribute ideas. As for what they’ll come up with, all bets are off.

Street sculpture by Belgian artist Michaël Borreman, who lives and works in Ghent. It shows four faceless people huddled together, their heads touching, in the middle of a street.

What to see and do

1. Historic quays If you’ve seen photos of Ghent before, chances are they’re of the Graslei and Korenlei. Once the city’s centre of trade, these quays remain a hub of activity, lined with cafe terraces and moorings for boat tours. They’re the gateway to the historical centre, as well as the neighbourhoods of Patershol, a former working-class district turned culinary hotspot, and Prinsenhof, a residential area that was once home to royalty.

2. The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb This altarpiece by the Van Eyck brothers is the most stolen artwork of all time — it was even robbed by Napoleon, and over the years, it’s been forged and almost destroyed. It marked the transition from Middle Ages to Renaissance in Flemish art: admire its genre-defining details at St Bavo’s Cathedral , where a VR tour leads visitors through its history.

3. Street art Ever since a historical centre passageway — now known as Graffiti Alley — was given over to street artists in the 1990s, murals have claimed Ghent like vines. Free to download, the ‘Sorry, Not Sorry’ map pinpoints some of the most famous. Pieces from homegrown talent include the rabbits by big-name ROA on Tempelhof and the foxes on Napoleon Destanbergstraat, which helped artist Kitsune make a name for herself.

4. Dok Noord In the city’s northern reaches, an old factory complex has been turned into Dok Noord, one of Ghent’s newest leisure and office developments. Its main draw is Hal 16, a food hall in a former brick warehouse. Try barbecued dishes or Italian specialities including mafaldine pasta with octopus ragu, then quench your thirst at Dok Brewing Company. There are 30 beers on tap, but Waar is Loca, a pale ale brewed on site, is a crowd favourite.

5. Museum of Industry Belgium was the first country in mainland Europe where the Industrial Revolution took hold. Housed inside a former cotton mill, this museum traces Ghent’s rise to textile powerhouse. The star of the collection is Belgium’s first spinning mule, a machine created to speed up yarn production: local Lieven Bauwens smuggled its components out of the UK, as export of such machinery had been banned.

Visitors admire The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb altarpiece inside St Bavo's Cathedral.

Where to eat in Ghent

1. Knol & Kool The choice at this vegan cafe, a few steps from the belfry, ranges from vegetable lasagne with rocket pesto and almond parmesan to bánh mì overstuffed with tofu, pickled carrot and red cabbage. Check out the on-site vegan minimarket for hibiscus-flavoured beer, green leek miso paste and nut cheese made locally.

2. Lepelblad This modern restaurant in tranquil Onderbergen, near the historical centre, works with local farmers and small producers to celebrate the season’s bounty. The menu might change depending on the day’s supply, but expect dishes like chicory tarte tatin with onion cream and mustard salad or marinated beef with salsify, soy and herbs. Each comes with a recommended wine and beer pairing.

3. Oak This one-Michelin-starred restaurant is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a refurbished look but has retained the minimalist, dark-toned decor that lets its menu shine. Brazilian chef Marcelo Ballardin’s multi-course menus lean into his international background with creations such as mackerel with Philippine calamansi lime or sea bass with tucupi sauce, extracted from wild manioc root in the Amazon rainforest.

Where to go shopping

1. Home Linen This boutique on the Korenlei has been crafting its own designs since the 19th century. A lavender scent permeates the space, which sells lace tablecloths decorated with red lobsters, retro night gowns and children’s dresses embroidered with rosebuds. It’s all reasonably priced, despite Belgian linen being renowned for its softness.

2. Antiques Ghent has a seemingly endless assortment of vintage shops. Located opposite each other on central Baudelostraat, Antiek-Depot has overflowing shelves of curios, while Moca has ceilings hung with chairs and tambourines. For more precise perusing, Galerie St-John has a pedigree selection of cutlery, porcelains and Belgian paintings, all housed in a former baroque church.

3. Sweets & condiments While Belgium is known for waffles and chocolate, Ghentians will recommend different specialities. Cuberdons are nose-shaped hard candies filled with fruit syrup; get a packet at Patershol’s Confiserie Temmerman , which dates to 1904. Even older is Tierenteyn-Verlent in the historical centre, selling a locally famous mustard made using a secret recipe.

Confiserie Temmerman in Petrshol.

After hours

1. ‘t Dreupelkot It’s been over four decades since Paul Rysenaer opened this pint-sized pub a few steps from the Graslei, where barrels serve as high tables and wood cabinets display shot glasses. Head here to try jenever, a juniper-flavoured Belgian and Dutch spirit: there are some 200 varieties on the shelves, some distilled by Paul himself.

2. The Cobbler Walk up a spiral staircase and into this low-lit cocktail bar within 1898 The Post hotel , one of the city’s trendiest addresses. It’s hard to say what’s better: the location on the Graslei, overlooking gothic St Nicholas’ Church, or its signature concoctions. Try the fruity pear sonata with vodka, Cointreau, cassis and pear, or the herbal downstairs harry, a mix of rum, cognac, vermouth, Chartreuse, maple syrup and sage.

3. Jazz clubs A UNESCO Creative City of Music, Ghent has a special affinity with jazz. Every July, Gent Jazz takes over a former 13th-century hospital with performances by the likes of Gregory Porter and Norah Jones, but you’ll find sessions to jam out to all year. Hot Club Gent , an intimate bar, and Missy Sippy , a self-styled ‘modern juke joint’, are good places to start in the historical centre.

1. Portus Ganda Ghent’s name comes from ganda, Celtic for ‘confluence’. The city was founded where the rivers Lys and Scheldt meet; when the Graslei and Koreneli get too busy, follow the canals to this very spot, now a tranquil marina. If visiting in warm months, detour to St Bavo’s Abbey, where hornbeam bushes mark the outline of a long-lost church.

2. The Bakery When pastry chef Joost Arijs set up a chocolate shop in SoGo — Ghent’s shopping district — in 2011, it was quickly named Belgium’s best by restaurant guide Gault & Millau. Opened down the road in 2023, his follow-up bakery was always going to draw in curious locals but, a year on, the morning queues show no sign of subsiding. Come early to have your pick of the crispiest croissants.

3. Veggie Thursdays In 2009, Ghent was the first city in the world to introduce a weekly meat-free day — an initiative that’s since been replicated from Taipei to Los Angeles. Take part yourself at Boon , an airy, Scandi-chic vegetarian lunch bar opposite the Gravensteen. The seasonal soups, salads and slices of quiche will have you coming back for more no matter what day of the week it is.

Where to stay in Ghent

1. Ganda Rooms and Suites You’ll be hard-pressed to find better value for money than this B & B, set in an 18th-century townhouse in the historical centre. The eight rooms retain original mantelpieces and wooden beams, and the owners worked with artisans to furnish them with bespoke beds and Belgian art.

2. Pillows Grand Hotel Reylof True to its former life as a baronial residence, this four-star hotel dazzles at first sight with a sweeping staircase in its marbled, neoclassical lobby. Set in a separate building, the 157 rooms are a more pared-back affair, but with common areas including a library and a bijou spa in what was a carriage house — plus the Graslei a stone’s throw away — there’s more than enough to keep you busy.

3.   Hotel Verhaegen Frescoes, a landscaped garden, a bath house with vaulted ceilings: there’s nothing subtle about this city palace, a short walk from the historical centre. It was reimagined as a four-room guesthouse by a pair of interior designers, who combined hand-picked antiques with 21st-century touches. Splurge on the Suite des Annees ’40 — though at some 750sq ft, the term ‘suite’ hardly does it justice.
