Kylie minogue anti tour dvd is on its way.

kylie anti tour dvd

That tour was only put on for Kylie's European super fan's, I guess the rest of us in Canada and the U.S. don't count, I was looking forward to a DVD being released, I've been a fan since day one, I have all of her album's, and DVD's, and I even flew 3 hours to see her live in TORONTO, but I guess that doesn't warrant me the title of "SUPER FAN". To bad, it would have been nice to see what this part of the world missed out on, I say "this part of the world" because, I noticed that when artist say there going on a world tour, they usually only mean Europe, maybe they should just say half a world tour. It's like "what there's another half", are there people on it, do they have ears, can they listen to music. Yes and we even watch DVD's with concerts on them, so who's ever in charge of deciding whether or not to release the ANTI TOUR on DVD, the answer should be, yes we should...

Anti Tour

The Anti Tour was the twelfth concert tour by Kylie Minogue , part of the "K25" project. In contrast to Kylie's previous tours, she only performed b-sides, demos and rare tracks, on a short strip of concerts in smaller venues, to a reduced crowd and intimate setting.

  • 1 Background
  • 2 Critical response

Background [ ]

In April 2011, during the Aphrodite: Les Folies Tour , Kylie talked about the Anti Tour conception:

Due to the fact that the first two shows in Australia sold out only minutes after the tickets went on sale, Kylie announced that she would perform second shows on both dates. On 25 March, Kylie announced that she would be performing two shows in the United Kingdom during April. Both UK shows sold out within ten minutes but quickly found their way on resale sites at discounted rates. Due to huge demand, a second show in Manchester was announced.

Critical response [ ]

The show was met with universal critical acclaim. Emily Jupp from The Independent gave the concert a five star review stating that Kylie was "[She’s] warm and sassy" and "Graceful [...] like a magical joy-sharing fairy, sprinkling euphoria across the crowd". About the staging of the show, Jupp said that "There’s no choreography and just one slight costume change but she proves she doesn't need theatrics." concluding that "She didn't even need the glitter; she sparkled brightly all by herself." Michael Wilton from musicOMH gave the concert a favorable review, awarding it with four stars, stating that "Backed by a stripped-down, well-rehearsed four-piece band and three backing singers, Kylie had to rely solely on her command of the stage. Although Kylie will not go down in history as one of pop’s great voices, her vocal control and delivery has improved dramatically, and for the most part, she exceeded possibly even her own expectations." Wilton said that "even though the show still had a structured sheen, Kylie was completely relaxed, joking with fans, giggling when she forgot the lines to a song, and dancing to the beat of her own drum on stage." He concluded his review by saying that "25 years later, she’s still clearly enjoying herself, and more importantly, eternally grateful to her fans." Dianne Bourne of the Manchester Evening News notes that Kylie "has been the undoubted queen of the Manchester Arena over the past 10 years, performing more concerts to more fans than any other female artist", describing her concert as "undoubtedly something magical."

Its jazzii, bitch, a lookback at kylie minogue’s anti tour.

kylie-minogue-anti-tour

Three years ago this week St Kylie of Minogue really got into full swing with her #K25 celebration of her first quarter century in the music business by embarking upon the ‘Anti Tour’. With the Anti Tour Kylie trod where none of her peers would dare to by doing a handful of dates (in both Australia and the UK) in which she sang rarieties; b sides, album tracks and unreleased demos. Anyone who’s been to see Kylie live will be aware that these are not typically understated affairs, but Ms Minogue stripped all of this back to perform theatre venues with just a backing band and none of her usual embellishments. Except perhaps a small glitter canon. And few tiny lasers.

I was lucky enough to be in attendance at her one London date at the Hammersmith Apollo and it truly was a unforgettable evening. As (despite rumours to the contrary) it has never received a DVD release all that survives of the evening beyond my memories are a selection of YouTube clips and my much prized souvenir t shirt. As tricky as it is to sift through such a one of a kind performance I’ve tried to pick some of my absolute highlights below:

MADE IN HEAVEN

In the 25 years of Kylie fandom I’d experienced prior to this moment ‘Made In Heaven’ was the number one track I was desperate to see live. The only previous memory I have of the b side to number 2 hit single ‘Je Ne Sais Pas Pourquoi’ being performed live was at the 1988 Royal Variety Performance, and I’d nearly worn my taped-off-the-telly video cassette out I’d rewatched it so many times. Back in the heady days of the late 1980s my only way of listening to the audio was via my 7″ inch record; I was unable to listen to it via my Fisher Price cassette player as Queen Minogue had failed to include it on her 2 million selling debut album. Perhaps this omission has helped it to reach godlike status in my mind but whatever the reason this was an absolute highlight.

ONE BOY GIRL

KYLIE! RAPS! This was my immediate thought when I first listened to Kylie’s 3rd album release ‘Rhythm of Love’ back in 1990. Rapping had previously been the exclusive domain of the People’s Minogue younger sister Dannii. Perhaps I was too young to know better but I genuinely thought her rap skills were second to none. Well except perhaps Betty Boo that is. The One Boy Girl rap has long since been an in joke amongst Kylie fans and thought of her performing this live seemed preposterous. But then the Anti Tour came along and blew all of our preconceptions out of the window: “Hey yo Kylie, wats up wit that one boy girl thing”. Classic!

YOU’RE THE ONE

An unused track from her 1998 classic ‘Impossible Princess’ album ‘You’re The One’ has never been commercially released and only exists in a very low quality scratchy leaked demo version. The fact that Kylie even acknowledged that her fans have enjoyed it over the years speaks volumes about her relationship with her fanbase and when she chose to sing this live it was such a special moment.

The only track from La Minogue’s 2010 album ‘Aphrodite’ not to be performed live on her epic Aphrodite: Les Folies World Tour. Co-penned by Minogue herself with Calvin Harris and Jake Shears from the Scissor Sisters it’s madness to me that this amazing song was overlooked as single choice. Classic Kylie. However it’s fun to see such a stripped down fun version. In terms of spectacle Aphrodite: Les Foiles set the benchmark for touring productions, I can’t imagine any of her peers ending a concert with a human water fountain; and the contrast between this performance style and the Anti Tour demonstrates Kylie’s versatility and comfort on stage.

ENJOY YOURSELF

The title track from Kylie’s 1989 sophomore album is in my top five Minogue tracks of all time. Never has the feeling a song gives you been so perfectly summed up by it’s title, pure joy from start to finish. However my 8 year old self could never understand why she sings ‘enjoy it’ on the chorus when the song is called ‘Enjoy Yourself’, and 26 years later I’m still confused. The perfect song to end the gig with this underrated classic is a pure adrenaline shot and I always blast it if I’m feeling blue. The reaction she got from the audience was so great that she even resurrected it for last year’s Kiss Me Once Tour. I defy anyone to listen to this song and not have a smile on their face.

It was a magical night. So many songs I wished I would gear were finally included in a set list. I made some great friends that night too.

Anti-Tour   ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Kylie 120 min • Hammersmith Apollo • April 3, 2012 ………………………………………………………………………………………….

kylie anti tour dvd

I have a love/hate relationship with Kylie! I think she is incredibly underrated, in that she has the capacity to write very interesting, edgy pop music. Unfortunately, people don’t seem to want to hear it, and I tend to find the music she releases is a bit lacklustre as a result. For years I’ve regarded Kylie as a b-sides artist. The tracks that don’t make it onto her albums are usually more interesting than the ones that do, and her b-sides get played on my iPod more than her singles. Infact, since her 1997 “indie” album Impossible Princess unfairly almost ruined her pop career (I still think its her strongest album) she’s played it very safe, sticking to a formula that has hundreds of thousands of men jumping around gay club dance floors all over the world. For this reason I don’t consider myself to be a Kylie “fan”. I didn’t like ‘All The Lovers’. I don’t want to hear her sing ‘Spinning Around’. I could definately never hear ‘Wow’ again as long as I live without any worry, and don’t even get me started on G-A-Y floor filler ‘Your Disco Needs You!’ Not that any of these are bad songs, my problem is that better material is always dumped for them. I feel like Kylie has dumbed herself down for the masses – trotting her feather boa’d showgirl alter ego out to an adoring public who love her for who she is, not for what she performs – as long as it was a hit. So, when she announced she was doing a tour of b-sides, rarities and demo’s, with no set and no dancers, I almost thought it was too good to be true. The minimalist poster artwork (her name in a small, simple font over a picture of her naked but for a pair of killer heels, wrapped in a very large piece of material saying ANTI TOUR) screamed “interesting” and “edgy”. I started imagining in my mind what this “Anti-tour” would consist of; for every album she releases, there is at least an albums worth of material that doesn’t make the cut, and ends up as b-sides or pirated online (in some cases, more than one album) and so the most pressing question for me was – what are her favourite rarities, the ones she would she choose to do?

Opening the show with ‘Magnetic Electric’, one of the brilliant electro pop offcuts off album X , known amongst fans as the X-Sides, Kylie looked truly happy. Dressed in a long ripped t-shirt and denim hot pants, she sexily sold us the b-side like it had been a number one hit – and that was a good indication of things to come. Over the next two hours she made her way through fan favourite ‘Cherry Bomb’ (another X-Side) the sublime ‘Tightrope’, from the Fever sessions, the beautiful acoustic guitar b-side off ‘Spinning Around’, ‘Paper Dolls’ – and the list goes on. Kylie herself was in fine voice, sounding delectable on lullaby-like ballad ‘Bittersweet Goodbye’, the one stripped down moment from her dance pop album Light Years . Elsewhere she sung the Michael Hutchens inspired ‘You’re The One’ written with long time collaborator Steve Anderson (who was present in the audience), the Jake Shears co-penned heavy electro ‘Too Much’ an album track from her Stuart Price produced album Aphrodite , and the Xenomania produced bonus track from the same album, ‘Might Rivers’. All were performed with more confidence and effortless style than I have seen Kylie exude in years, seeming most comfortable and at home in her civvies and behind a microphone stand.

kylie anti tour dvd

What suprised me the most though, in all this, was at a concert for “diehard fans” very few people seemed to know the songs in the set. Even when the auditorium was bathed in lasers for the stunningly frantic ‘Drunk’ from her deconstruction album Impossible Princess , the audience stayed surprisingly inert. Kylie, undeterred, also performed ‘Say Hey’ from the same album, a song that wouldn’t have sounded out of place on Bjork’s album Debut . Hearing these songs live for the fist time in 14 years, made me realise just how good her “indie” period actually was. It’s also a testament to her as an artist that she has such songs in her back catalogue – the songs from that era performed here still seemed too heavy for her current audience, even 15 years after their release, and whilst my friend and I euphorically screamed every word and danced for all we were worth, the majority of the people around us looked slightly bemused – and this proves my early statement.

I don’t consider myself a Kylie fan because, if I knew she was delivering a concert that only consisted of hits, I wouldn’t pay £80 and queue for 2 hours to see it. If I didn’t really love the song she’d just performed, I wouldn’t scream and cheer. I appreciate her as an artist, a label many people wouldn’t even give her credit for, so I don’t just want to hear ‘Can’t Get You Out Of My head’. The hundreds of fans that queued for several hours and piled into Hammersmith Apollo last night seemed less concerned with the music itself, and just with the fact Kylie was in front of them on stage singing it. If that’s what it is to be a “Kylie fan”, I’m glad I am not one. I like Kylie, but I suppose, to a certain extent, I’m actually more of a die hard Kylie fan than I realise. Out of two hours of rare material, I knew about 80% of it, which was more than most of the people around me.

The mixed crowd did perk up when her PWL album tracks got an airing, and I have to admit that hearing her do ‘One Boy Girl’, ‘It’s No Secret’, ‘Give Me Just A Little More Time’ and ‘Got To Be Certain’ did make me grin like a child, and brought back memories of playing Rhythm Of Love on cassette and then a year later totally overplaying Let’s Get To It , one of my first cd’s. My relationship with Kylie started from a very young age, and last night was proof that it hasn’t ended just yet.

I hope that the slightly muted response to a lot of the material on display doesn’t stop Kylie from doing another Anti-Tour in the future, as it was one of the best things I’ve seen her do in years. Stripped down, not pandering to her public image, and showing herself for the artist she is. Until then, I have put Impossible Princess back onto my iPod, and I will wait with baited breath to see what move she makes next – but I for one am glad the showgirl stayed at home last night.

  14. Anti-Tour

I have a love/hate relationship with Kylie! I think she is incredibly underrated, in that she has the capacity to write very interesting, edgy pop music.
