Kedarnath Trek – A Complete Guide

trek route from gaurikund to kedarnath

Table of Contents

Where is Kedarnath?

Kedarnath (3,553 metres, approximately) is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand. It lies just below the base of the mighty Kedarnath peak (6,940 metres), and is the First Kedar to be visited in case you are staying true to the sequence of the Panch Kedar circuit. The other four being Madhmaheshwar , Tungnath , Rudranath, and Kalpeshwar .

Kedarnath Trek

I want to drive there myself. What is the motorable route?

Haridwar – Rishikesh – Devprayag – Srinagar – Rudraprayag – Augustmuni – Kund – Guptkashi – Sonprayag – Gaurikund

Distance from Haridwar to Gaurikund: 237 km

The motorable road ends at Gaurikund, but you’ll need to park your vehicle at Sonprayag. No private vehicles or even taxis from outside are allowed to go beyond Sonprayag . The only option is to board one of the shared taxis that specifically run from Sonprayag to Gaurikund. This more than sorts it out in case you are driving here yourself.

The road is more or less well-maintained except for a few patches that fall under the landslide zone. Road from Guptkashi to Sonprayag is patchy at best.

I want to opt for public transport.

  • Take a bus or shared taxi (Max) from Haridwar/Rishikesh to Sonprayag
  • Take a shared taxi (Max) from Sonprayag to Gaurikund

Buses, both local and of Uttarakhand State Transport, and shared taxis start plying from Haridwar/Rishikesh to Sonprayag as early as 4 am.

That being said, you should know that all the local buses take their own sweet time and multiple halts. All the buses and taxis will drop you at Sonprayag. After this, there is no other choice but to board another shared taxi to Gaurikund.

It should cost one person 1000-1200 bucks, Haridwar to Haridwar.

trek route from gaurikund to kedarnath

How long is the trek? How is the trek route like? Do I need a guide? Is there any Medical Aid available?

Gaurikund – Rambara Bridge – Jungle Chatti – Lancholi – Base Camp – Kedarnath (16 km)

It is a well laid out trek all the way through, paved and pretty straight forward.

From Gaurikund to Rambara Bridge (about 7 km) it is gradual yet easy ascent.

It is a steep, gradual ascent after crossing the bridge at Rambara, all the way to the base camp, where it flattens. The last 1 km or so is an easy walk to the temple.

You do not need a guide. Horses, Mules, Palanquins, and Porters are available at Gaurikund. It’s better to book them at Gaurikund itself; you will find many at several points on trek too but they will ask for a price higher than the altitude you will be standing at.

Medical and First Aid facilities are available at several places including Lancholi and Base Camp. There even is a small government hospital just 200 metres from the temple. And police check posts on several points.

Where to stay, eat, and how much will it cost?

There are many Lodges, Ashrams, Guest Houses, and Camps running from Gaurikund to Base Camp that provide cheap accommodation, both private and government run, including GMVN Lodges at Lancholi and Base Camp . The prices can vary from INR 500 per room to INR 2000 , depending on the rush of pilgrims. While the rates shoot up in May-June (peak season), they also go drastically low in the months of September-October (the best time to do this trek).

However, don’t expect anything in terms of luxury; expect basic rooms, warm quilts, simple but good food. There are plenty of tea/coffee shops on the way that also offer food. Expect to pay around INR 100 for a hearty meal for one person .

trek route from gaurikund to kedarnath

Is it possible to do Gaurikund-Kedarnath-Gaurikund in one day?

Yes. It depends on your fitness. We had set out at around 2 am and were back by 5 pm the same day, from Gaurikund to Kedarnath and back. Approximately 35 kilometres in 15 hours, which includes 4 hours of wait in the queue outside the temple (it was May). I’ve been told time and again this is a small feat. I am not proud of it. We were behind schedule and had to make up for it. I don’t like to test my speed against distance. Time to me is mostly irrelevant. I like to walk easy. Sit in silence. Maybe lie down. Take a gander at the grandeur. Look into the soul of these mountains. Feel a beat or two. Click a few pictures. Start again. Repeat again. Must we tie self-made accomplishments to places such as these?

This is the gist of it. If you have any further queries, feel free to leave a comment below or contact me through Facebook or Instagram . I’ll get back to you as soon as I can. Stay safe, travel responsibly!

Hi Mohit..Beautifully written! To the point! I was planning this trek in September this year..Had a couple of doubts…If I start at say 5 in morning from Sonprayag..Take a shared taxi to Gaurikund. how long does the shared taxi take from Sonprayag to Gaurikund? If I start at 5 from Sonprayag, what time can I expect to start the trek from Gaurikund? I plan to reach the temple by say afternoon and stay overnight..Is there any place I can book on the spot to stay overnight and begin my descent the next day? I’ll be traveling solo! Thanks!

Hi Jatin. Thank you for reading! 🙂

  • The distance from Sonprayag to Gaurikund is approximately 4 km. It shouldn’t take you more than 10 minutes to reach Gaurikund. However, this will be a shared taxi and it will not start until it can accommodate all the passengers it has the capacity to. So, I’d say add another few minutes. That being said, September is not the peak season; there shouldn’t be any hassles.

You can start the trek from Gaurikund the moment you reach there.

There are plenty of Lodges, Dharamshalas, and Guest Houses around the temple. Finding a room, on the spot, will be no trouble at all.

All the best! 🙂

Hi Mohit. This is an apt description for anyone who wants to go to Kedarnath. I’m planning to go in early October. Just had a couple of queries. Is it better to take a shared taxi from Rishikesh to Sonprayag? Rather than a bus which might halt at every place and as you said will take own sweet time to reach. Don’t mind paying a little extra for taxis if required. Also, apart from the registration for the yatra which can be done online is there any other registration or fitness certificate required before starting the trek? Thanks!

Hi, Rakesh. Thank you for reading. Shared taxis are relatively faster but almost always cramped. Buses are more breathable. Personally, I prefer buses. No fitness certificate is required.

Kedarnath Temple: Trekking from Gaurikund

  • Post last modified: UPDATED ON: April 7, 2020

In the month of October, when I made an impromptu plan to visit Lord Shiva’s adobe at Kedarnath Dham, my mind was occupied with the horrible stories of the flood disaster that shook the entire nation 3 years ago. The day, when the clouds started bursting, the glaciers started sliding on the mountain slopes, the fragile mountains started disintegrating and small rivers suddenly breached their limits, the mighty humans did not find a way to escape. The tragedy was huge and the damage was tremendous. Thousands of people lost their lives in that fateful night. Men, women, children, young, old; most of them were either swept away by the river or buried under the mountain debris. Most of the buildings, hotels, shops, parking spaces, homes were washed away instantaneously in the roaring water of Mandakini River, which normally appears calm and peaceful.

It was one of the worst natural calamity in the history of India, but Life has to move on. Soon after the disaster, the rebuilding of Kedarnath was started and the pilgrimage started again from the next year onward. When I reached Gaurikund, the basecamp for Kedarnath Trek, it was very much alive. The shops were open and usual businesses were going on in the streets, but there was a strange silence all around. Normally, the religious destinations don’t wear so much silence, at least, you can hear the loud music of devotional songs at the shops selling religious VCDs. However, at Gaurikund, that charm of a religious destination is lost after the tragedy. October is still a good time to visit the temple of Kedarnath, but there was hardly 10-20 pilgrims.

The GMVN guest house, small hotels and lodges, many shops on the both side of the narrow streets are still there to make it an alive town. The temple of Gauri Mata is also there, but unfortunately, the famous hot spring of Gaurikund was washed away during the flood. The sign of the disaster is still visible on the dwellers of this holy town.

It was only 12.45 PM, when I reached Gaurikund, so I decided to move further on the trekking trail. The trekking trail of Kedarnath was a pleasant surprise. I could not believe for a while. I never imagined of finding such a developed path for the trek. It was a wide, perfectly laid down path going up for 12 kms all the way to the temple, just like you find on the trekking route to Mata Vaishno Devi Temple. There was almost negligible crowd on the route, ascending or descending.

Moving up, I thought to take a night halt at Rambara, a bustling town on the mid-way of the trek. Starting from Gaurikund, you can find many beautiful waterfalls all the way upto Rambara. The valley of Manakini is green, serene and pleasantly beautiful.

At a small shop on the trail, I stopped to buy the soft drink. Just to check the accommodation status at Rambara, I asked the local boy whether night stay at Rambara was possible or not. And, the answer shocked me completely. Rambara was no more in existence, the mighty river washed the entire settlement of Rambara during the disaster. It was unimaginable. Rambara was the biggest settlement on this trekking route, always full of crowd, until the tragedy occurred and then, it became a part of the history. I moved quickly to see the sign of that ghost town, but it was only a plain area with no sign of settlement at all. Rambara still exists, but only in memories.

The trekking route bifurcates after Bheembali. First route bypasses Rambara and moves upwards on the hilly side, but both the route meets after Rambara. I wanted to visit the site of Rambara, so I moved on the route going to Rambara. The appearance of Mandakini River at Rambara is completely different from what it looks like at other places in the valley. The beautiful, slow-moving shallow river flow of Mandakini suddenly appears very fierce between the stone gorges at Rambara. You can instantly understand the horrific conditions during the flood after looking at the river flow there at Rambara. The fast moving glacial moraines and debris brought down hundreds of devotees between these rocks and there was no question of survival after the impact with the massive stone walls of the river gorge.

The old traditional route of Kedarnath on the left side of Mandakini River was completely destroyed beyond Rambara. Therefore, a new route is constructed on the right side of the river. Although the new route is longer and steeper than the older one, but it is also much wider and more comfortable.

After the destruction of the settlement at Rambara, there was a need to rebuild a new settlement of that scale. Slightly away from the riverbed, on the uphill trail, a new settlement is being developed to fill the void created by the flood disaster at Rambara. Chhota Lincholi and Lincholi, situated in the near vicinity, would be the major halts on the midway of this trek in the near future.

When I arrived at the small settlement of Lincholi, it was completely dark outside. The temple of Kedarnath is 6 kms from Lincholi. After seeing the GMVN guesthouse, I suddenly felt very tired, so decided to stay there for the night. Due to the fewer crowds, there was no issue regarding the availability of accommodation. I booked a shared accommodation available in a huge tent. It had 6 sleeping bags inside, so I was supposed to share that tent with 5 other people, but nobody arrived later on.

The dinner at GMVN was very simple, yet delicious enough to feed my hungry tummy. The tea offered after the dinner was very nice. After dinner, I slipped inside the sleeping bag.

Since 6 kms of trek was still left, I started very early in the next morning. I wanted to reach at the temple before the sun-rays would appear unbearable. The physical condition of my body was in much better shape than the exhausted one from the last night. I was feeling refreshed due to the good sleep.

I found nobody for the initial 2 kms, and then met the first batch of the people who were descending from the temple. With the first rays of sun on the hills, the solitude of valley was disturbed by the metallic birds. The to and fro movements of the helicopters started for the rest of the day, unless the weather condition don’t allow them to fly.

It took me two and half hours to reach at the relatively larger settlement of Kedarnath. Near the helipad, the newly constructed guesthouses and cottages of GMVN (500 meters before the main temple) gave it a fresh look and at the first glance, no sign of flood disaster was visible. As I moved closer, I could feel that fearful silence in the air.

There is a check post near the GMVN cottages, where security personnel check the registration slip of this journey. If you don’t have a registration slip already, bio-metric registration is possible on the spot, at a counter adjacent to the check post.

The Mandakini River appears calm and narrow near the Kedar Dham. A proper bathing ghat with steps has been constructed on a bank of the river. After crossing the bridge over Mandakini, I entered in the main street of Kedarnath Dham. It was the old settlement of Kedarnath, where the sign of devastation was visible at every step in the form of broken, dilapidated or demolished structures.

The main temple of Lord Shiva at Kedarnath was miraculously safe during the flood. When the flood water of Gandhi Sarovar carrying large chunks of moraines moved downwards with the stone boulders, a big boulder tumbled down and stop just behind the temple. The large boulder diverted the path of water from the both sides of the temple and thus the temple remains intact.

After offering my prayers at the temple of Kedarnath, I walked behind to look at the big boulder, the saviour of the main shrine. That big boulder is very sacred now and pilgrims started praying here also.

The traces of Gandhi Sarovar were visible from the backyard of the temple, but that lake was almost destroyed during the flood, so there was no point to visit that side. I was actually interested to visit Vasuki Sarovar, but it was too far. It did not look a wise decision to visit Vasuki Sarovar alone, so abandoned that idea.

After spending nearly two hours near the temple, I commenced the return journey to Gaurikund. The beautiful landscapes of the journey route were already captured by the camera, so no specific thought was there in the mind. Many people on the upward journey was more interested to know about the remaining distance, so the only task pending with me was to give them a little bit of courage and inform them about the remaining distance.

After taking few occasional breaks during the downward journey, I returned to Gaurikund in 4 hours. Luckily, a shared jeep was available directly to Guptkashi. I reached Guptkashi well in time to continue my onward journey to Rudraprayag.

This way, I completed an impromptu trip to Kedarnath Dham. Most of the time during the journey, I kept comparing the current situation at Kedarnath in view of the flood disaster. Within 3 years of the calamity, many things changed rapidly on the trekking route to Kedarnath. Few new settlements have been developed and few older one became the part of the memory. The pilgrimage to Kedarnath would be still in the shadow of the flood disaster for next 2-3 years. Perhaps, when the trekking route and nearby areas would become more developed in the coming years, the terror of that fateful night would be slowly fade away from the memories and then the people would stop looking for the stories from the past.

I will be travelling first time solo to Kedarnath. I am planning to visit from 24th August and returning back to 29th August. Is the time feasible for travelling solo as can’t plan in September and October due to other engagements. Please suggest the timing.

Yes, it’s good to go there. There are chances of the rain, so carry a raincoat for your comfort and also good shoes. 4-5 days are more than enough. Have a nice trip. 🙂

' src=

Is there any locker service to leave our bags in Gaurikund?

I don’t think that there is an exclusive locker service. However, you can leave your extra bags at the shops. They will charge few bucks to take care of your bags. You can rely on them.

' src=

This part of your story starts with a deeply reflective and somber mood but it is, but, natural. The large boulder arriving to save the holy shrine may be described by many as just a coincidence but I tend to look at it as a divine intervention.

The literary style of your narratives has kindled a desire in me to have your introduction – name, vocation – place of residence etc. The name Solopackpacker is not enough to satisfy me. 😉 Best regards, Sushant Singhal

Dear Solo Backpacker Thank you for such a wonderfully written article and fully inspiring. We are two ladies in our late 40s planning to travel in May 2019. Can you please let me know if the altitude affected your trek? I wasn’t very clear but is there accommodation at halfway point on the way to the temple so we can break the 16km walk into 2 days?

Hi, I did not get any problem because of the altitude. But, it doesn’t mean that it will not affect anyone. It may or may not. However, I haven’t seen anyone having any kind of altitude sickness. It’s a pretty trail with dense green forest cover, so you can expect plenty of oxygen supply. There are many accommodation options with the gap of every 4-5 kms (At least 5 places on the entire trek route), so you have choices to complete your journey at comfortable pace.

Can I go Kedarnath at Janaury ?? Lord Shiva’s idol will be there …??

No, The Temple is closed during the winter, mostly from Mid-November to Mid-April.

Very useful information about trek. But what about temperature in Kedarnath during mid October. Is it too cold and how will be the oxygen level for people with wheezing problems

Hi, Mid October is good time for Kedarnath visit. Expect cold weather during the night. Day time temperature should be OK. I didn’t feel any Oxygen level difficulty at Kedarnath. If you trek slowly, you will get good acclimatization and everything will be fine.

' src=

That is one great article. Very informative and complete. Thanks for sharing. Can I ask, if any special shoes are required to do the trekking to Kedarnath? What do you suggest?

Hi, no special shoes required. The trekking route is very good and any shoes will serve the purpose. But try to get a shoes with good grip and ankle support. It will make you more comfortable.

Hello, Good to read your post. We are planning to visit Kedarnath in May. Nice to read that you can stay on the way, I was wondering how can I trek for 16hrs. How much time does it take to descend. I don’t have a good stamina but I am very interested in doing the trek. Is it doable. Also if it starts raining are there any shelters on the way, if yes at what distance .

Being a major center of pilgrimage, you will find a lot of people from different age groups on the trail. Physical stamina also varies from person to person. So, the trek is tough, but possible. And, you will find a lot of inspiration on the way. Don’t think about 16 hours, break that in 2 hours, then 3 hours and so on. Also, the time required for descend varies from person to person. Expect rain shelters at every 3-4 kilometers. Hope you will enjoy your trek. Good Luck.

Kedarnath Trek- Kedarnath Temple at Chardham Yatra

Last Updated on: May 20, 2023

About this Blog: Kedarnath Yatra is one of the most spiritual pilgrimages in India. Kedarnath, the abode of Lord Shiva attracts thousands of devotees within a span of 6 months when the shrine remains open. Kedarnath is a part of the sacred Char Dhams (4 pilgrimages) as well as a part of the Panch Kedars . This blog is about our experience of the Kedarnath Trek done in the month of October. Read on to know more about Kedarnath Yatra, how to reach and where to stay and other related information.

Kedarnath is not just a place of pilgrimage for me. The place has much more significance. It was the first place that I had ever travelled with my family. I do hear every now and then that I had been a very difficult 2-year-old during that time who gave a tough time to my parents. Well, what else to expect from a toddler! Now after almost three decades, I was again ready for Kedarnath Yatra again with Agni in tow. Only this time, we decided to go on foot from Gaurikund and I was quite excited about the Kedarnath trek.

This trip was going to be a special one, not for a singular reason. To be honest, I was way too excited to visit a place that has such nostalgic memories for me. The moment we told our families about this trip, my father started telling me stories about “that” Kedarnath Yatra that happened almost 30 years ago. By stories, he meant all the embarrassing episodes of a two and a half-year-old on a trip with the family. It seemed he divulged all my idiotic secrets to my husband, who of course, did not forget to tease me later.

View of Kedarnath Temple

My uncle was quite excited to know we were visiting Kedarnath and Badrinath. He recalled all the special places and even told me to take pictures in the same pose as we had done previously. So much for changes! Overall, going to Kedarnath was exciting not only for us, but also for my family.

For Agni and me, Kedarnath trek was important because we were again trekking the Himalayan trails after almost 2 years. All these years, we had done a few short treks in the Western Ghats and the David Scott Trail in Meghalaya. We thought Kedarnath trek might be the catalyst that would overcome the drought in our trekking trips. After all, it was after Amarnath Yatra that we had fallen for trekking! So enough of my ramblings, let us start with all the information you wanted to know about Kedarnath Yatra, Kedarnath Temple and of course our amazing experience there.

Where is Kedarnath located?

Kedarnath Dham is a part of the Char Dhams Yatra (4 religious places) that also includes Gangotri, Yamunotri and Badrinath. Located in the Rudraprayag district of Garhwal region in Uttarakhand, the Kedarnath temple is located in the Kedar valley below the Chorabari glacier, which is the source of the river Mandakini.

Kedarnath – History, Legend and Stories

It is usually an obsession with me to find out about the past of any place that we visit, especially if the place happens to be a historical and religious place. For temples in India have numerous stories hidden in them. I did the same for Kedarnath.

It is believed that the Kedarnath shrine was buried under the snow for almost 400 years!

Like others, Kedarnath also has its fair share of mythologies and legends. There are various versions on the origin of the Kedarnath Temple. While there are claims that the temple was resurrected and built by the great Hindu seer Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century while others claim that it was built by the Hindu King Raja Bhoj of Malwa in the 2nd century AD. Well, as I said before, there are numerous versions.

Kedarnath finds mention in the great Hindu epic Mahabharata and this is where the legend of Panch kedar comes in. Did I mention before that Kedarnath is also one of the five (Panch) Kedars, the five holy places of Lord Shiva.

Kedarnath peak as seen from Kedarnath Temple

In the epic battle of Kurukshetra where the brothers fought against each other, the Pandavas defeated and killed their cousin brothers Kauravas. The Pandavas killed their own in the battle and were inflicted by self-remorse and guilt. They decided to ask for forgiveness from Lord Shiva, the master of the Universe. With this thought in mind, the Pandavas decided to go to Kashi to ask for forgiveness from God. Lord Shiva, on the other hand, was not too keen on forgiving the Pandavas for their carnage. He left his abode at Kashi and hid as a bull at Guptkashi. Bhima, the strongest of the Pandavas, however, was able to find Lord Shiva in the form of a bull. The bull again escaped and later rematerialized at five places and these 5 places came to be known as the Panch (five) Kedars.

Different parts of the bull materialized at different locations – the hump at Kedarnath, the arms at Tungnath , the navel and stomach at Madmaheshwar, the face at Rudranath and the hairs at Kalpeshwar. It is believed that the Pandavas had built temples at all the five locations and were freed of their sins. It is also believed that the front portion of the bull fell at Pashupatinath in Nepal. The Pandavas built temples at all five locations. It is believed that the Pandavas performed Yagna at Kedarnath before they left for Mahaprasthana (renouncing the world to attain salvation). Incidentally, the Mahaprasthana started from Mana village near Badrinath. That story is for some other time.

There is another story where Nara-Narayan, a Hindu deity worshipped Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. He prayed to the Lord and asked him to stay at Kedarnath for the wellbeing of the human beings. Lord Shiva granted him his request and thus Kedarnath became the abode of Lord Shiva.

The Floods of 2013

Kedarnath is also now known for the devastating floods that occurred in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand in 2013. Surprisingly the Kedarnath Temple was one of the few structures that remained unscathed during the floods.

If the mythology is to be believed, then the temple was perhaps built almost 3000 years ago. However, there are inscriptions of the wall of the temple that dates towards a period in between 650 – 850 AD. How the temple withstood the ravages of the flood has been an area of interest for researchers.  The reason is apparently related to the glaciers of the region and the lichens grown there.

Ravinder Kumar Chaujar, a retired professor from Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, Dehradun, studied lichens growing on the rocks of Chorabari’s moraines to determine the geological history of the place. Professor Chaujar found that the temple had remained submerged in ice or in the glacier for at least 400 years. This was perhaps one of the reasons for the resilience of the temple. It remained unharmed in the 2013 floods and will perhaps survive further such episodes of flooding.

Kedarnath Trek – Our Experience

As I have mentioned before that we decided to go on foot all the way to Kedarnath from the base point at Gaurikund. The journey started from Haridwar. Local buses from Haridwar to Guptkashi were very few because of the post-pandemic situation. So we rented a car for 5 days for a trip to Kedarnath and Badrinath.

Mandakini River on the way to Sonprayag

We started early in the morning from Kedarnath and passed through the winding mountain roads. We had been to these parts a few times, but the scenery never failed to enchant me. The meeting of Mandakini and Alaknanda Rivers at Rudraprayag still makes us wistful of the unadulterated beauty of the mountain rivers.

The Mandakini River was our constant companion throughout the road to Kedarnath. We reached Guptkashi at around 3 PM and then decided to travel to Sonprayag. There are a number of hotels at Guptkashi and is one of the places to stay for the night if you reach late.

We reached Sonprayag soon and found a hotel to stay for the night. We found a number of hotels at Sonprayag well but the majority of them were closed. It seemed this season the number of pilgrims were lesser than previous years, the reason being obvious.

Earlier, Sonprayag was the starting point of Kedarnath Yatra. But now, a motorable road upto Gaurikund has been built and the 5 km distance from Sonprayag to Gaurikund can be travelled by a shared jeep.

We started quite early in the morning. Once we were at Sonprayag, we headed towards the Yatra Registration Counter. To conduct the Chardham Yatra in a controlled manner after the flash floods of 2013, the number of Yatris (pilgrims) visiting the Kedarnath shrine is regulated. Yatra registration can be done online and you get an e-pass. You can do it yourself or ask your agent to do it for you. There is also a counter for getting the Yatra e-pass at Sonprayag. A man was sitting with a laptop and was making the Yatra e-pass for a fee of Rs.50/-.

We had our Yatra e-pass with us and went to the Registration Counter directly. They recorded the e-pass number, did thermal screening and we were given the permission to start our Yatra. Every year, the pilgrims get a physical pass as well. We did not get it this year, perhaps because of the lesser number of pilgrims.

Sonprayag – Gaurikund

As soon as we got ourselves registered for Kedarnath Yatra, we walked towards the jeeps standing for taking the yatris to Gaurikund. We got our seats in the jeep and were soon at Gaurikund.  The jeep fare was Rs30 per head.

The Kedarnath trek route starts from Gaurikund and concludes at Kedarnath covering a distance of 16km. The trekking route had changed and rebuilt after the flash floods of 2013. The old trekking route has now given way to a better and wider trekking trail.

Starting Point at Gaurikund

Kedarnath Trek Starts

The trek starts at Gaurikund. “Kund” literally means a reservoir and Gaurikund has a hot water spring where the pilgrims usually have a bath before embarking on the Yatra. The hot spring no longer exists after the floods of 2013. Now, there is a huge enclosure where pilgrims can take a bath.

Gaurikund is also known for the Gauri Temple dedicated to Goddess Parvati. Close to the Gauri Temple is the Uma Maheswar Temple where Lord Shiva is worshipped in the form of a rock.

Gaurikund

Gaurikund is congested and there are a number of shops catering to all the needs of the travellers. There are a number of accommodation facilities as well at Gaurikund.

We started from Gaurikund at around 8 AM. The Mandakini River was gushing down with beauty and spirit. As much as I wanted to stay there and admire the sprightly river, we had to start our trek towards Kedarnath Temple.

About half a kilometer from the starting gate, is a booking office for horses, mules and palkis and Pitthus . Pitthus are basically men carrying the pilgrims on their back. Usually very old and young pilgrims take the service of Pitthus . There is a fixed rate for mules and Pitthus . You can book them from here. However, you will find mules almost entirely through the trail.

Pitthu at Kedarnath Yatra

After a kilometer of trekking comes the Horse Point (Ghoda Pul) or the place from where you can get on your horses or mules to carry your journey. The horses are allowed from this point only. Upto this place, the trail is quite crowded with horses, mules and their owners. And don’t you forget, they will constantly ask you to get a mule for the journey! I had been told at least 15 times that I should take a horse to Kedarnath.

We trekked along the well-made trail. As usual, very soon we were quite tired and panting. Our legs were screaming for respite.  Well, this is what happens if you are out of any fitness regime and had not trekked for almost a year! Nevertheless, we continued to trek. Though I must admit that there were a couple of moments when I felt that I should have hired a mule.

Horses on the way to Kedarnath

The next significant stop on the trail is the Bheembali. The trekking route bifurcates at Bheembali – one for the trekkers and the other specially designated for horses and mules. Both the trails finally meet after Rambara.

Rambara was once one of the biggest settlements in the Kedarnath trek route. The floods of 2013 had completely wiped off the settlement. What remains now is the debris of the old trekking route which was pointed to us by a local shopkeeper. It is also here that we see the Mandakini River flowing down with force through the gorges.

Gushing Mandakini River at Kedarntah Trek

The older route to Kedarnath was through the left of Mandakini River and that route is now completely destroyed. The new route has now been constructed at the right side of the river. A few more minutes of trekking and we reached Chhoti Lincholi. It was almost 12.30 PM at that time and we decided to take a lunch break there. This place can be roughly said to be the midpoint of the trail.

Restaurant at Chhoti Lincholi on the way to Kedarnath Yatra

We had a good lunch of alu paratha at Chhoti Lincholi and were quite ready for our next stretch of the trek. And it was then, something sort of a miracle happened. It started snowing!  Well, not exactly all the big snowfall, but we could see the snowflakes on the tents and on us.

To be honest, it was a bright and sunny day when we started. The snowfall made all the people quite happy and a group started singing a local song. We were told that it was the second snow of the season and all the locals were quite happy to see the snow. We enjoyed the snowfall for almost half an hour after which it stopped.

The snowfall might have had us gushing like diehard romantics, but it definitely made the trail a bit difficult for us. We were already late for more than an hour and the weather became chilly. It was a lazy start after lunch and snowfall and gradually we trekked our way towards Kedarnath.

Trekking Trail at Kedarnath Yatra

Finally, we reached Lincholi. There are a few accommodation options at Lincholi. You can stay here for the night. Kedarnath is about 6 km from Lincholi. As much as we were tempted to stop at Lincholi, we decided to trek all the way to Kedarnath. After trekking for another hour, we reached Kedarnath Base Camp.

There is a GMVN Guest house and cottages at Kedarnath base Camp. Kedarnath shrine is another 500 m from here. There is also a check post here where they check the registration slips. They only ask for the e-pass numbers and really do not check any slips. We trekked towards the shrine and finally we reached there at around 4PM. Once we reached Kedarnath, we tried to look for a place to stay. There are a number of places to stay near the shrine, mostly dormitories. We finally chose to stay at Bikaner House just behind the Kedarnath Temple.

We were quite in time for the evening Aarti at the Kedarnath Temple. The Aarti starts at 5.30 PM. After watching the Aarti, we went to our guest house, had our dinner and simply snuggled into our sleeping bags.

Kedarnath Temple – the end of the trek

We awoke early the next morning and went to visit the Kedarnath Temple. This time we saw the temple in all its glory. The main temple of the Kedarnath remained unscathed in the floods of 2013.

People standing for Puja at Kedarnath Yatra

The interior of the temple is a bit dark. There are statues of the five Pandava brothers and Draupadi, their consort. Inside the main hall, there is a conical shaped stone that is said to be the hump of the bull that Lord Shiva transformed into (remember the story I mentioned before). There are statues of Lord Shiva and a few other deities inside the main hall as well.

We offered our prayers in the temple and then roamed around the place for some time. I had a few old pictures when I had visited Kedarnath Temple almost 3 decades back. I tried to connect the places with that of those pictures. Obviously, the place had changed, but the temple had remained intact.

Outside the Kedarnath Temple

Outside the temple, there is a statue of Nandi, the bull facing the temple. The entire place looks quite beautiful with the snow-covered Kedarnath peak (6940 m or 22,769 ft), the Kedar Dome (6,831 m 22,411 ft) and other peaks surrounding the temple on three sides.

Mountain peaks behind the Kedarnath Shrine

Just behind the temple is a huge rock known as the Shri Divya Bheem Shila. It is believed that this stone had protected the temple from the waters of the flood in 2013. When the waters of Gandhi Sarovar carried large chunks of moraines and stones, this huge stone boulder tumbled down and anchored just behind the temple. This rock then diverted the flow of water to the sides and the temple remained intact.

Divya Bheem Shila behind the Kedarnath Temple

You will invariably feel calmness at this place. All around the temple, you will see many ash-smeared saints and sadhus sitting with a trident (Trishul). They seem to be in a world of their own. It is quite interesting to see these sadhus all around the temple, sometimes singing while at other times having a pot of marijuana.

A holy man or Sadhu sitting near the Kedarnath Temple

After spending some time around the Kedarnath Temple, we started our return journey towards Gaurikund at around 8.30 AM. We descended to Gaurikund after taking occasional breaks and reached there by 2 PM. Our car had been waiting for us at Gaurikund. We continued our journey towards Guptkashi and decided to stop there for the night before continuing our journey towards Badrinath.  Our visit to Badrinath remains for the next story.

Kedarnath Temple Timings:

The temple remains open from 4 AM to 9 PM everyday.

All that you need to know about Kedarnath Trek and Yatra

How to Reach Kedarnath?

Jolly Grant Airport near Dehradun is the nearest airport and is located about 235 km from Kedarnath. Taxis are available from the airport to Sonprayag.

The nearest railway station to Kedarnath is Haridwar or Rishikesh. From Haridwar and rishikesh, you will get direct buses to Guptkashi and Sonprayag. But these buses are few in number. You can check online bus sites to see the time of the buses. Buses to Guptkashi, Karnaprayag, Gopeshwar are now available from Delhi (ISBT) as well.

You can also hire a car to reach Guptkashi or Sonprayag. However, it is better to book a car for both Kedarnath and Badrinath or the entire Char Dham Package. The cars charge a lot more if you only ask them to drop at Sonprayag.

Rudraprayag

We had hired a car for 5 days to visit Kedarnath and Badrinath and it cost us about INR 11,000 for the 5 days (which I do consider to be cheap). We also stopped at Tungnath and Chopta on the way from Kedarnath to Badrinath.

If you are driving by your own car, you can follow the route:

Haridwar – Rishikesh – Pipalkoti – Devprayag – Srinagar – Rudraprayag – Agastamuni – Guptkashi – Phata – Sonprayag

Sonprayag has a huge parking space where you can keep your car for the night. The Registration centre for the yatra is just a few metres ahead of the parking space.

The distance between Sonprayag and Gaurikund is about 5 km. You can start the trek from Sonprayag or else take the shared jeeps to Gaurikund. The jeep fare is INR 30 per head. The stretch of road from Sonprayag to Gaurikund is quite bumpy and rough.

Gaurikund serves as the base camp for the Kedarnath trek.

From Gaurikund, you can either trek or ride horses/mules to Kedarnath.

Kedarnath on foot (Kedarnath Trek)

Trekkers on Kedarnath Yatra

The total trekking distance from Gaurikund to Kedarnath Temple is about 16-17 km.

Kedarnath Trek Route

  • Gaurikund – Jungle Chatti (4 km)
  • Jungle Chatti – Bheembali (3 km)
  • Bheembali – Lincholi (4 km)
  • Lincholi – Kedarnath base camp (4 km)
  • Kedarnath base camp – Kedarnath temple (1 km)

The entire trail can be covered in a single day on foot. There are a few accommodation facilities in the middle.

Kedarnath by Horses/ Mules and Pitthus

Horses and Mules on the way - Kedarnath Trek

Horses, palkis , kandis and Pitthus are available from Gaurikund to Kedarnath. There is a booking office just before the starting point of the trek from where you can get them. There is a fixed rate for horses and mules. The rate for pitthus and kandis vary with weight. While you will get them easily at Gaurikund, you will also get them on the way.

Tip on riding horses/mules: Bend forward while climbing upward and bend backward while climbing down and hold the saddle tightly.

Kedarnath by Helicopter

Helicopter ride at Helipad in Kedarnath Base Camp

These days many people travel to Kedarnath by helicopter as well. The helipad is at Phata located between Guptkashi and Sonprayag. We found a couple of different operators providing helicopter services to Kedarnath. While Phata is the main place from where you can get helicopter rides, other helipads are found at Sersi and Sitapur. The helicopter would take you to Kedarnath Base Camp, about 1 km from the Kedarnath Temple. This distance has to be covered by foot. Even horses are not allowed beyond a certain point.

Things to remember for Helicopter ride to Kedarnath

  • The helipads are at Phata, Sersi and Sitapur.
  • Only 2 kg of luggage is allowed per person.
  • Additional charges are levied if you weigh more than 80 kg and above 120 kg, 2 seats need to be booked.
  • The price of the tickets depends on the helipad you are flying from. Usually a round trip cost somewhere between INR 5000 to 7000.
  • If you get the round trip ticket for the same day, then they usually allot 2 hours to visit the temple and come back to the helipad.
  • It takes roughly around 10 minutes to fly to Kedarnath Base Helipad and from there it is an easy trek of 15-20 minutes to the Kedarnath Temple.
  • Helicopter services might stop at any time due to bad weather conditions.

Where to stay at Kedarnath?

There are plenty of hotels and guest houses at Sonprayag as well as Gaurikund. GMVN Guest Houses are also available and you can book them online.

GMVN Guest House and cottages are also available at Kedarnath Base Camp. There are a number of guest houses and dormitories available near the temple as well. We stayed at Bikaner Bhawan just behind the temple.

Accommodation options are also available on the way to Kedarnath. GMVN Guest Houses are available at Jungle Chatti, Bheemabali and Lincholi. Online booking is available at these guest houses and I would recommend you to book them beforehand if you opt to stay in between.

We stayed at Bikaner Bhawan in a double-bed room which cost INR 2000. Hot water is also available and a bucket would cost you around INR 60 – 70.

The rates of the guesthouses and hotels near the Kedarnath temple can change randomly. We would recommend you to book your stay beforehand if you are visiting with family.

Medical facilities on Kedarnath Trek

Medical centres and facilities are available throughout the way. You can find them in between Jungle Chatti, Bheemabali and Lincholi.

Food, Drinks, Shops and Restaurants on Kedarnath Trek

Most of the hotels, guest houses and GMVN Guest Houses provide food at reasonable prices. The food available is vegetarian and quite tasty. There are many shops available all through the trek route selling Maggi, parathas, snacks and hot beverages. You will definitely not go hungry on your trek to Kedarnath.

Toilet Facilities on Kedarnath Trek

Make-shift toilet tents are available on the way at various places in the trekking route.

Is there Mobile and Internet Service at Kedarnath?

Mobile services are available at Gaurikund till Lincholi. However, it is a bit rough at Kedarnath. We found Jio and Airtel services at Kedarnath while there was no mobile service for Vodafone.

Free wifi is available at the main areas like Jungle Chatti, Bheemabali, Lincholi and Kedarnath. However, do not rely much on the free wifi services. We did not get any during our stay at Kedarnath.

When is the best time to visit Kedarnath Temple ?

Kedarnath is a part of the Char Dham Yatra. The temple opens on the auspicious day of Akshay Tritiya (usually falls in April or May) and closes on the day of Bhai Dooj (falls in October or November). Kedarnath Dham can only be visited during this time.

Kedarnath is located at an altitude of 3553 m and remains cold most of the time. The weather is quite unpredictable in the mountains. Usually May to June and October to November is a good time for Kedarnath Trek. July to September are the monsoon months and there are chances for landslides during this time.

Vasuki Tal is located about 8 km from Kedarnath Temple. The trekking trail is quite steep and should be done with the help of guides. The Vasuki Taal offers a great view of the Chaukhamba ranges.

Rudra Meditation Cave

This is an interesting place. Located about 1.5 km from the temple, there is an underground cave available for meditation and isolation. The caves have a window that provides a direct view of the Kedarnath Temple. You can book the cave for yourself for the purpose of meditation for a maximum of 3 days. Obviously, only one person can stay inside the cave. The cave has all living facilities like water, electricity, heater, attached toilet and a phone to call the authorities in case of emergency.

  • After Bhai Dooj, when the temple is closed, the main deity is brought down to Ukhimath.

Thank you so much, Ami!

I’m hoping to go on Kedarnath Yatra after a couple of years. Good to know that they trek is about 16-17km and can be done in a day and there are also some accommodations on the way. Hahaha, it is funny and awesome that you visited Kedarnath as a kid and now your dad managed to give all the embarassing details to Agni. Now that I travel with my toddler, I have quite a bit of such funny and embarassing moments. Hoping to pass it on to her partner in future… Am I evil? Hahaha..

I bet you are! Just imagine my embarrassment when my dad gave all my secrets to my hubby. And he teases me with those till date!

Oh my God! I am bookmarking this post. Kedarnath has been on the top of my list. I want to hike and visit this amazing place, especially to hike. And also take my mother as she loves these kinds of religious places even though I would send her to the temple by other means and not by hiking. Thanks for this post, I will try to visit it as soon as the pandemic is over.

Thank you, Raksha! I am sure you will love Kedarnath.

What a great travel story and also a guide for those who want to do this trek. The views are absolutely breathtaking! And I love all those hidden little stories you mentioned. This trip also get a very personal feeling as other family members told you all those stories. The temples are all beautiful.

Thank you so much, Paula!

So interesting to read about the Kedarnath Yatra pilgrimage. And great to return to a trek that brings back special family memories. I can certainly see why the scenery along the river way to the start of your trek intrigued you. It looks like an interesting trek up to the Kedarnath Temple. Even if there was snow along the way. I might want to visit by helicopter and see those amazing views from above.

Helicopter ride is a good way to reach the place for those who cannot hike. Thank you Linda for the lovely comment!

What a fantastic experience! You provided so much information about Kedarnath, I feel like I could go and have a good idea of what to expect. I think the Kedarnath Trek sounds fascinating, although it must have been tiring the cultural experience and natural views must have been worth it.

Thank you Chloe! Kedarnath trek is quite an experience.

This is a great comprehensive guide! We have never heard of Kedarnath Yatra, but it looks like an interesting place to discover. Spiritual, historic and hiking all in one trip? That sounds like our kind of thing. We’ll definitely include this in our India itinerary when it’s safe to travel.

Wow just look at those mountains. I would love to do this hike and when I visit India I need a long time to see the beautiful places in this country. This looks like a great 2 day and worth it and the views must be amazing during the whole trek. I hope I get to visit one day as it looks amazing.

That I totally agree to. You will need a lot of time to explore India! Thank you for the lovely comment!

I never heard of the Kedarnath and after this in-depth description and experience, I would love to do a trek here. I love a hike with beautiful mountains and culture combined and this has it. The backdrop to the temple is truly amazing and I would just go to the temple just to see that. A lot of information here to consider as well, so I have bookmarked this page as I hope to do some hiking in India once Covid clears off. This part of the world has been on my list for a long time.

Thank you Danik! Kedarnath is one of the spiritual places in India and is absolutely gorgeous.

This is by far the most amazing blog I found on Kedarnath yatra. All the information is quite helpful. I almost felt that I am right there with you on the trek. Thanks for writing.

The final destination: Kedarnath temple

The final destination: Kedarnath temple

The last (and maybe the most exciting) 1 km of the trek! Here you have to trek on snow, so be careful. Once you reach the temple, be prepared to get completely speechless by the unbelievable sight!

All good things come to an end, and so will the trek near Kedarnath! We know it will be hard to leave. The spiritual aura and the divine mysticism will allure you to stay for some more time. But you will have a bucket full of memories to bring back with you. And if that doesn’t seem enough, stay overnight before finally bidding goodbye to the beautiful creation of God!

When to go for Kedarnath Trek?

Kedarnath trek best time is during the summer months, from April to June. The comparatively warm temperature makes it ideal for trekking. In case you are wondering, winter is not convenient because heavy snowfall can cause hindrances during the journey. As far as the monsoon is concerned, the heavy rains, landslides and floods can make your trip very risky.

A reminder, start trekking Kedarnath early in the morning as you can trek between 4:00 am to 1:30 pm and not after that. It is because Kedarnath Dham is situated inside the wildlife sanctuary and pilgrims are not allowed to trek outside this time frame.

Things to remember before going for the Kedarnath Trek

There are several things to keep in mind before planning a Kedarnath trekking trip. We have listed them down for you!

•Get your medical checkup done before the trek. You are advised not to trek if you have blood pressure problems and respiratory disorders.

•Try to complete the trek between the stipulated time frame of 4 am to 1.30 pm according to the government rules. If you feel like you cannot, opt for a night stay and resume the trek the next day.

•If you feel you cannot complete the trek, don’t worry! Take the help of the palki or pony services to reach the destination.

•If you are trekking for the first time, practice Anulom Vilom daily to improve your breathing.

•Carry some light snacks like dry fruits or packaged food items to keep you energised and full throughout! Don’t worry, there are food stalls and eateries on the way (just in case you were wondering). But if you have some food handy, you can munch along the way if the stalls are closed.

•If you are a female trekker, avoid wearing sarees as they will make your trek uncomfortable. Salwar kameez with a good pair of sneakers will be good to go!

•And yes, while trekking in Kedarnath, don’t forget to carry warm clothes even during summers as evenings can get really cold.

What are the things to carry for the Trek?

Let’s get the packing for the trek of Kedarnath done. You cannot stuff your bag with unnecessary items and make it heavy. Remember, you need to trek along with it! Take the right approach and pack only what you need. And to make the job a little easy for you, here’s a list of essentials that you must put in your luggage!

•Warm Clothes

•Medicines

•Hiking Boots

•Packaged Food

•Water Bottle

•Umbrella

•Lip care and sunscreen

All that needed to be said, has been said. Now, get going. The doorway to heaven is waiting for you! And remember, the nearest airport to Kedarnath is in Dehradun. So, book your flights to Dehradun and from there reach Kedarnath via road.

Hi…. I intend to visit Kedarnath Dham in the month of oct.. do I have to book helicopter tickets in advance or is it available from helipad itself…. few years back I had visited Amarnath Dham and tkts were available from the helipad itself…

Do I have to carry woollen clothes in oct … what will be the weather like

Please advise

HI Sandeep , Heli tickets are easily availble in month of october coz of lack rush of pilgrims. And another most important thing is that you must have woolen clothes + rainy suit beause tempurate is around of 4-5 degree and you visit in lap of kedar glaciar. Happy and safe joureny in advance. Jai Kedanath.

I am fatty body with 110 kg weigt. Can i go by feet gurikund to kedarnath

Hi Ashok, you can trek to Kedarnath with proper breaks at frequent intervals. If you find difficulty on going by feet, then horses/ Palki are available too at Gaurikund.

Hari Om. Our yatri group will be going for Kedarnath darshan in mid-June (overnight stay arrangements are confirmed). 1. Does the new trek route cut through glaciers; or even snow-covered areas in mid-June? 2. Will sweater + windcheater jacket suffice or should we plan for heavier woolens/gloves? 3. Forum comments indicate that the new trek route is very difficult. Is it more steep or just longer than the old route? 4. If any yatri feels too exhausted along the way, are any pony services available for hire mid-way? Thank you for your guidance.

1. No , New track is easily accessible in mid june or july and glacier is start backside of temple. Yor are visited in lap of Glacier 2.If you are plan by feet to temple then plz take raincoats and some woollen clothes beause tempreature in kedarnath track is dramatically change within minutes. And take one heavier woolen jackets if you want to stay in night at kedarnath dham. 3. Yes the new track from Rambara is very difficult and approx 5 km are also added in the new route and the route is full with steps and this is the most difficult part of this journey. 4.Yes if you are not able to walk then you take pony service in mid-way and this gonna lil chipper. Best Wishes For you Journey. Jai Kedarnath.

Your website says “New trek route to Kedarnath recommended by NIM is 16 km, but the distances shown in the photo add up to 22km. Is the new trek 16 or 22Km from Gaurikund?

Actually after 2013 disaster it is 22 km. Jai kedarnath

How much time will take to reach kedarnath for pedestrian if we start early in the morning. We wanted to come back on the same day till late evening.

Hi Shrikant, If you are Physically fit, then one can complete trek from Gaurikund to Kedarnath in 5-6 hours. Else it could take 7-8 hours. On coming back, it would take 3-4 hours only. So one can do come back on same day from Kedarnath.

Best route for kedarnath trek Pls suggest

There is only one route 4 both pedestrian and ponny/horses. Jai Kedarnath

I am sorry for so many questions. I am from South Africa and will be new to India and really want to visit Kendarnath temple so i want to be sure and have all my questions answered before going so i am well prepaired.

Hi Seema, Welcome to India & Kedarnath !!

Kedarnath temple, may be you already know, remains open from May to October month only. So plan accordingly. Kedarnath has accommodation facilities of around 1000-1500 pilgrims. Else you could stay at Sonprayag.

Helicopter services will be available from Phata or Guptkashi and will take 10 mins to reach Kedarnath. You have to walk less than 500 mtrs to reach temple. It will cost INR 7000/- for return flight on same day or you can also stay at night and return another day. Buy simple offering and will be available at shops at Kedarnath. You can take small bag with you.

Hope this will help you !!

I much appreciate the response. Thank you for the help. Take care

I trekked in October 2017. The new trek from Gaurikund to Kedarnath is tougher than previous one which was destroyed in the year 2013. Govt. should try to make it less steeply so that pedestrians may trek comfortably. Pedestrians are compelled to walk on the valley side and horses/pony carrying pilgrims/building materials walk on the hill side. This is very risky and against the norms laid down by the Govt. Pedestrians safety should be at the top priority.

hello people,

i’m planning to trek kedarnath on octobber 20. can you please help me with some of my doubts

1) Can we trek uphill and come down on same day? 2) can we get accommodation at kedarnath? 3) how can we travel to badrinath from kedarnath? 4) any other places of interest in kedarnath?

Dear Satish, Sorry for the late response.

1) Can we trek uphill and come down on same day? (No, it is not possible to trek uphill and come same day down from Kedarnath. But it is possible if you take Helicopter service either while going up or coming down from Kedarnath dham) 2) can we get accommodation at kedarnath? (yes, you will find plenty of tents and govt accommodation in Kedarnath) 3) how can we travel to badrinath from kedarnath? (Trek down to Sonprayag and take bus/jeep to Joshimath/Badrinath) 4) any other places of interest in kedarnath? (there are but it will take one-two days) https://www.euttaranchal.com/tourism/places-to-see-in-kedarnath.php https://www.sacredyatra.com/kedarnath-places-to-see.html

hi I want to travel solo for chardham yatra on October 7 from rishikesh. as it’s my first visit to chardham yatra, I getting little bit confused whether there is any budget package for me or not? if I want to travel by regular bus service from rishikesh towards jankichatti and from jankichatti to yamunotri then again from yamunotri to uttar kashi …………is it possible by regular bus or by shared jeep, local taxi service? whats about the average rent for room per night? is there dormitory around the yatra route? I am planning for October, 2017 so will I have to book rooms in advance? I need your suggestions to plan well my trip in October. thank you

Hi Indranil, if you are traveling solo in October and have ample days then we suggest you to travel by your own in local buses and no major need to book rooms in advance as in October month you would find any huge rush in Chardham Yatra. Room rates will be from INR 300 to INR 1000 per night at different location. Kindly make a plan travel plan before starting the tour. If you need a best budget package for Chardham Yatra then Sacred Yatra offers you low cost budget packages for Chardham Yatra. You can check them here http://www.sacredyatra.com/travel-packages/char-dham-packages . Sacred Yatra makes your travel hassle free and provides best travel experience.

Hi sacred yatra bunch of people (10) travelling from SonPrayag to kedaranath on 30-may-2017 we need some tips,if possible tell me charges of helicopters on that to kedaranth. age is 60 above

Hi Sacred Yatra, will the trek be completed in a day or we need to Up trek 1 day and down trek 1 day. what is the total time need to trek from Gaurikund to Kedarnath and back to Gaurikund. Please advise. We need to plan our journey accordingly as we are coming from Bangalore, Karnataka. Please.

Hi Shivadhanush, If you are fit to trek 18 kms up and 18 kms down, then you can surely do the trek in a day. Many pilgrims are easily doing it. It takes 5-6 hrs to reach Kedarnath from Gaurikund. And 2-4 hrs back to Gaurikund for a normal person. For better planning and easy yatra, always do you accommodation booking in advance. We also provide complete package to Kedarnath. Kindly check : http://www.sacredyatra.com/4-nights-kedarnath-package-ex-delhi.html & http://www.sacredyatra.com/2-nights-kedarnath-package-ex-haridwar.html

Weather it was advisable to stay in kedarinath… weather we get dol people will be there for return

What will be the rate for the month June and July for dol carrying by mens to kedarinath

You can check rates here : http://www.sacredyatra.com/ponies-and-palkies-rates-for-kedarnath-dham.html

Is there any accomodation facility in kedarnath like near it some rest house or some place where we can rest for the night

Hi Adityavardhan, GMVN offers accommodation facilities at Kedarnath. You can book accommodation in advance through GMVN website.

how much bus fare from Rishikesh to gourikund and rudraproyag to badrinath?

hello…. i want to start trek from gourikund to kedarnath and i will stay one night at kedarnath next day come back at gourikund during this time where putting my luggage? and one more thing have any gmvn accommodation at gourikund?

There are no locker room for luggage only. You either leave your belongings at some shop or leave luggage at Sonprayag luggage room. As you know there is sharing taxi from Sonprayag to Gaurikund, all you can do to leave luggage at Sonprayag. GMVN Gaurikund is also a very good option to stay.

How much time pony Will take from gorikund to kedarnath

hi people, I just wanted to ask if there is any timing to start trek to kedarnath as we are planning to start trek after noon so is there any restriction to continue trek at night… Please Reply ASAP

No, Night trek is prohibited. Trek time start from 04:00 am

Hi….Since there is no room left in GMVN uttarkashi so will it be right to stay in gaurikund because i want to visit kedarnath and tungnath, chandrashila as well. how frequently UTC buses depart from rishikesh to gaurikund or what are their timings, how much time they take to reach gaurikund from rishikesh, because check in time is 12 noon at GMVN gaurikund so i want to be there around 12.please also mention minimum days to cover both kedarnath and tungnath chandrashila and time duration of trekking.

Hi Shubh, If you can find a room at Gaurikund then it is fine. As Rishikesh-Gaurikund has min 7 hrs driving distance (more in bus), so we suggest you to reach Gaurikund by evening. Also there is no point in reaching at Gaurikund if you can’t go and trek back from Kedarnath. So have a night stay at Gaurikund and next day trek to Kedarnath and return back to Gaurikund. And next day drive towards Chopta, do the Chandrashila summit and return back to Chopta/ Ukhimath for the night. Last thing i want to tell you that Tungnath-Chandrashila trek will take 5-6 hr at most from Chopta. So Happy Journey !!

Kedarnath Trip - The walk to the temple !

Where the Lord resides ...

Photo of Kedarnath Trip - The walk to the temple ! by Sharmila Ray

We were six people trekking to Kedarnath shrine. We had decided that we'll trek by foot. It may take a whole day but it was fine as we had book GMVN for the night to stay at Kedarnath.

Photo of Kedarnath Trip - The walk to the temple ! 1/1 by Sharmila Ray

As we started to walk from Gauri Kund, Basak aunty began to feel little anxious. She was in a dilemma whether she'll be able to walk all the way to the temple. To make the matter worse, the horse owners began to tell us, "It's a difficult trek, not possible to walk all the way - hire a horse" and so on. We all tried to encourage her but in vain, so uncle and aunty finally hired horses from Gauri Kund to Kedarnath from Rs.2500. One have to show their registration confirmation (either on phone or in print) and the photo ID (the one which you mentioned in registration form). So they went off on the horse and we remaining four walked our way to reach the top.

There were splendid waterful all over the trek route ... a very beautiful sight to see and experience.

Photo of Gauri Kund, Uttarakhand, India by Sharmila Ray

The trekking route to the Kedarnath shrine wasn't a easy one, if you're physically fit then you won't have much difficulty in walking and completing the trek. All those beautiful surrounding made the tiring and wearing journey not only bearable but utterly enjoyable too. The trek route was surrounding by lush green valley, wild flowers and splendid waterfalls made it extremely pleasant to trek on.

Slowly and steadily we were walking up hill and sometime downhill too.

Photo of Kedarnath Trip - The walk to the temple ! by Sharmila Ray

There were many people walking up the trek. Some old people who cannot afford the price of the horse ... and many with the spiritual devotion on their mind.

Safe trek route through the lush green valley.

From Gauri Kund to Kedarnath it is 16 km (only). Trekking route for the first 7 km is gradual [this path is repaired after the flood]. After crossing Rambara village [which has washed away completely during the massive flood in 2013] and Mandakini river, the route gets steeper for the next 7 km [the new trek route made after the flood]. The last 2 km seemed normal, more or less like plain road. So the trek route is divided into 3 parts.

For us, experience on this 3 different phrase/parts was different and unique.

My maa - standing on one side of the road to let the group of horses pass.

Photo of Kedarnath Trip - The walk to the temple ! by Sharmila Ray

The first phrase was fine. We were sort of getting used to the walking and surrounding. One problem everyone who is walking will face initially is that walking along side the horses is difficult. Most of the people going to the temple had hired a pony/horse, so there were less people walking on the route. We soon realized that they [the horses loaded with their passengers & the owner walking by its side] were coming in groups. When we saw them coming, we stopped walking - moved to one side of the road - gave them space - and let the horse group pass. When they are gone, We continued with your walking peacefully. Enjoy the surrounding and click many photos in peace too.

A group of horses going down towards the Gauri Kund - a man sweeping the road.

Photo of Kedarnath Trip - The walk to the temple ! by Sharmila Ray

There were many people employed to sweep the road all the time and hence the road were very much clean and walk able. I haven't seen anyone littering the place. Maybe because most of them were on horse's back holding tight to prevent fall.

Whatever people may say but it is simple exploitation of pony/horse, felt sad for those speechless animals. If one is sick or old, it is understandable but capable young people going on horse back - i seriously can't understand.

They're also used as goods transporter - ferry building materials - food and rations.

Photo of Kedarnath Trip - The walk to the temple ! by Sharmila Ray

On our way back the next day, we saw a horse fallen down nearly unconscious. Three young men were kind enough to stop by and checked on it. Gods knows what has finally happened to the horse. What is actually want to say is, we should be more kind and conscious of their doing.

The snow cap mountains are where we have to reach - the road looks rough n tough - but i too looked prepared.

Photo of Kedarnath Trip - The walk to the temple ! by Sharmila Ray

On a lighter mood : i enjoyed watching and following the fellow trekker. Everyone was walking and stopping at their own pace. So when they stop for a break - we lead them and when we stop to take photos - they catch up. It was like a one sided game still i enjoyed it.

The bridge at Rambara.

Photo of Kedarnath Trip - The walk to the temple ! by Sharmila Ray

At Rambara, there used to be village but now there was absolutely nothing. The whole village has been washed away in the flood in 2013. I had seen photographs of that place on various websites. I personally like it now, even around the Kedarnath shrine, it looked more tranquil and near to the God.

We stood on the bridge for several minutes, wandering how that tiny river had became so furious and wild that it had swept away a whole living village with it.

My maa - posing for me and enjoying the view too !

Photo of Kedarnath Trip - The walk to the temple ! by Sharmila Ray

The second phrase of the trek route starts after crossing the Rambara bridge. Immediately after crossing the bridge, the road visible looked steeper. How we cope with the steep climbing ? We walked slowly and took frequent breaks. We were also rescued by the marvelous weather. There were floating clouds coming up from the Gauri Kund side. The whole valley was covered by those clouds and it was a extraordinary sight to see. It was a speechless moment for me. No words and no photographs can capture its real beauty. I felt as if i saw a passing magical moment.

The floating clouds making the valley look a piece of heaven !

Photo of Kedarnath Trip - The walk to the temple ! by Sharmila Ray

The valley and the Mandakini river gentle flowing down. The clouds - making the weather more pleasant and our walk to bearable. Devotees slowly climbing the steep hill.

Condition of the road but the weather was a pleasant one !

Photo of Kedarnath Trip - The walk to the temple ! by Sharmila Ray

Here i want to write something : Promote tourism that also bring source of living hood to the local people is good and i support it too. To make a balance between human profit and preservation of nature, the government should check and make strict rules. The nature and its beauty shouldn't get damage, we don't own the mountains - the rivers - the waterfalls and the trees. So by cutting them down and building hotels and lodges or personal houses ie. destroying the nature is a crime against nature. It should be a part of responsible tourism.

Steep climb.

Photo of Kedarnath Trip - The walk to the temple ! by Sharmila Ray

The steep up hill climb ... sometime we cheated by taking the mud path - which was sort of risky as we may slip and injured ourselves. Though it was fun.

Last lap ... we were all most there !

Photo of Kedarnath Trip - The walk to the temple ! by Sharmila Ray

After seeing this sight, we got that extra energy to walk again but of course not without taking few photo and stand there for another 15 minutes just staring at the mountains.

The condition of the road was bad in the second phrase of trek route.

Photo of Kedarnath Trip - The walk to the temple ! by Sharmila Ray

Road mending work was in progress. Thousands of people come to visit Kedarnath temple every year. So many devotees and horses go up and down this path making the road mending job a tough one. Rain makes the matter worse ... this patch of the road was real difficult in term of walking on narrow path along with the horses.

Glaciers or Snow bridge ?

Photo of Kedarnath Trip - The walk to the temple ! by Sharmila Ray

Everyone was saying that these are glaciers but by definition they don't match. After searching on the net for a long time - i didn't get the satisfied answer. Then i all of a sudden got to know about it on a trekking vblog that they are called "Snow Bridge". One can walk on it too - of course with proper guidance and equipment.

... the other one !

Photo of Kedarnath Trip - The walk to the temple ! by Sharmila Ray

Snow bridges are frozen waterfall/river, beneath the thick frozen ice, water still flow as crystal clear streams. I wonder if they ever completely melt away as in form of waterfall. I know, in April - May these snow bridge covers the whole road. One has to walk over to cross it. Even in end of September, it didn't melt ... it will be winter soon - it won't melt then too. So i assume, it is frozen throughout the year. The photograph actually does not real show how marvelous it look with naked eyes - especially the above one.

A group of horses coming back from the Kedarnath temple.

Photo of Kedarnath Trip - The walk to the temple ! by Sharmila Ray

After some 7 odd hours, witnessing some wonderful landscape and numerous waterfall - one exceeding the other in terms of beauty, we finally reached the top. By top i mean, there were no steep climb after this point. This is the third phrase of the trek route and the shortest and easiest. We had to walk nearly 2 km from here to Kedarnath shrine. On our way, we checked in the GMVN cabin, where we're staying for the night.

We stayed in the cottage on the left hand side of the pic. with green roof.

Photo of Kedarnath Trip - The walk to the temple ! by Sharmila Ray

Where we stayed : the food and accommodation -

There are many tents, huts, and cottages run by the GMVN ie. Garwal Mandal Vikas Nigam. We stayed in a 6 bed cottage (Rs.750/person) with attached 2 bathroom with geyser. Each bed had 2 blankets, which were heavy but clean and soft. Spend the night very comfortably.

Information about other accommodation run by the GMVN:

1. Tent - 10 person accommodation provided with mattress and blankets. One toilet outside the tent for all 10 person with no water. Fare - Rs. 300/person.

2. Hut - 10 person accommodation provided with bunk bed and blankets. One attached toilet with geyser. Fare - 550/person.

3. Cottage - Same as the one we were staying.

Fare of accommodation may vary depending on the season ... peak season high rent - off season low rent.

There are private hotels, lodges, guest house and dharmshalas as well. It would be wise able to book them in advance as they get book very quickly. Availability of room on arrival is difficult.

There are many government run canteen which provided food at a fixed price. The food canteen was just in front of our cottage and the food was simple and super delicious - consisting of roti (chapati), sabzi (seasonal vegetable), dal (lentil) - rice.

My maa all ready to complete the last walk.

Photo of Kedarnath Trip - The walk to the temple ! by Sharmila Ray

We wore all the warm clothes - jacket, muffler, woolen gloves. The sun was about to set, we walked towards the temple. The towering white snow clad mountain was looking like a God itself - changing colors from orange to gold to pink ... marvelous sight. Watched this moment speechlessly too.

When we reached the temple, the sun was still setting down and it was getting darker minute by minute. There was a long queue outside the temple and took us nearly 1 1/2 hours to enter it. The waiting was good too. Enjoyed and felt every moment of being there amidst such beautiful surreal surrounding. People in groups were singing devotional song and chanting mantras, making that moment more emotional and spiritual.

The mountains - they're all glowing in the last rise of the setting sun.

Photo of Kedarnath Trip - The walk to the temple ! by Sharmila Ray

Experience inside and outside the temple :

Inside the temple, it was not over crowded like it is in April - May (peak season), still we didn't get to stand in front of the main temple door for even 10 seconds. I just remember that i saw a tringular form covered (i mean decorated) with colorful flowers with "Shash Nag" towering over the triangular form. Later i came to know that it was the conical shape rock, which i had read about. As I had not seen the "Lingam" in the front, i assumed that it was kept behind the conical rock form. Everything was decorated with flowers and because we didn't get enough time to get a proper glimpse inside the temple, i really wouldn't figure out where the "Lingam" was. Maybe in the morning, when there is no flower decorations, we might have seen it much easily and properly. Flower decoration has its own charm and beauty too. i had seen it that way hence i liked it that way.

The surrounding - glowing mountains - devotees clicking photographs with the temple .

Photo of Kedarnath Trip - The walk to the temple ! by Sharmila Ray

Anyway, i believe that the Lord is not only residing inside the temple. HE is everywhere - in the chill fresh air - in the last rays of the setting sun - in the flowing water of Madakini river or maybe on Nandi's (the Bull) back ... taking in some fresh air. Everything is possible - it's a belief after all. I am sure HE doesn't always like to be dress up and sit inside the temple all the time, so that HIS devotees get a glimpse of HIM. I am sure HE is everywhere.

Enough of my thoughts and theories - Lets move on !

There are few interesting facts and tales about the Kedarnath Temple:

1. Kedarnath temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is worshiped in form of "Lingam" which is irregular in shape. This is one of the 12 Jotrilingam. There is also a conical shaped rock which is also worshiped as Sadashiva (a form of Lord Shiva).

2. The story behind why it is worshiped as Lingam. According to folk legend - Nara & Narayan (two incarnations of Lord Vishnu) went to Kedarnath and worshiped Lord Shiva. Pleased with their devotion, Lord Shiva appeared in front of them and offered them a boon. In return, they asked Lord Shiva to stay there in his original form (that is the Lingam form) for the salvation of mankind. Lord Shiva granted them their wish and made Kedarnath His home. Hence the worship of the Lingam.

3. Second story : Post was, the Pandava brothers wanted to seek Lord Shiva's forgiveness as they had killed their kins durning the war. Lord Shiva didn't want to see them hence turned in to a bull and tried to disappear by sinking himself (head first) in the ground. One of the Pandava brother (Bhima) caught hold of the bull from the back. He wanted to pull him out and force him to reappear. Lord Shiva disguised as a bull, did appeared but in 5 different parts and in 5 different places (ie. the face at Rudranath - arms at Tungnath - navel & stomach at Madhyamaheshwar - hairs at Kalpeshwar - and Hump at Kedarnath). Hence the worship of the conical shaped rock.

4. The temple is believed to be built in the 7th - 8th century by the Pandavas of Mahabharat. Later reconstructed by Adi Shankaracharya in the 12th century (not sure).

5. The temple is built using large stone slabs and it is built on a 6 ft high rectangular platform.

6. The temple consist of 2 parts : the front part or the hall which has a lower roof compare to the back part or the main temple. The front hall has many deities statues (from Mahabharat) curved on its wall. The back part, which is the main temple has the "Lingam" and the conical rock form. Outside the temple - there is a huge statue of Nandi - the bull.

7. There are many pujas performed or held in the Kedarnath temple. Four pujas in the morning and two pujas in the evening. The minimum cost of the puja is Rs. 340/person and maximum Rs.1700/person (money business everywhere). "Darshan" is free ... Thank God for that !

8. Geologists say that the temple was under the snow for nearly 400 years (1300 - 1900 AD). This period is also known as "Little Ice Age". Scientists say that people who built the temple knew the terrain very well ie. they knew about the formation of snow & glaciers. They made the temple strong enough to withstand natural disaster.

9. There is a massive boulder just behind the temple, which is believed to have save the temple during the 2013 epic flood, by blocking the path of the water and saved the temple from being washed away. Everyone believes in miracle, i am sure nobody is interested in knowing how strong the temple is built.

10. Due to the extreme weather, the temple is open to the public from April (Akshaya Tritiya) till November (Kartik Purnima - Autumn full moon). The deity is carried down to Ukhimath. There it is worshiped for the next 6 months.

A cluster of tiny white-pinkish wild flower. It was growing by the roadside all along the trek route.

Photo of Kedarnath Trip - The walk to the temple ! by Sharmila Ray

Next day ... descending journey to Gauri Kund :

Next day, we began our descending journey at 05:30 in the morning. Only me & Maa were coming by foot, others were taking the horse. We didn't stop much in the way as we had to reach Gauri Kund as fast as possible.

Two noticeable thing happened during the journey :

1. As we were walking down the hill, i was surprised and couldn't believe that we had actually climbed those steep up hill path.

2. Walking down hill gave us sore legs, i couldn't believe that too. When we went to Kedarnath temple, we had no body ache - no pain - absolutely nothing - but while coming down hill, our leg were sore and had body pain too. Next day we were fine.

3. Coming down from Kedarnath to Gauri Kund on horse is more painful and fearful experience as told by my co-traveler.

We completed our return journey in 4 1/2 hours. This was the end of our Kedarnath trip ... from here we headed towards Badrinath temple.

P.S. We had left all our bag and baggage at Sonprayag hotel. Trekked with only the things that we required on that particular trek and stay at Kedarnath.
