2. Nandi Statue

The colossal wonder, a Nandi statue stays perched on top of the Chamundi Hills. The Nandi is 16 feet in height and 24 feet long. Nandi is, according to Hindu mythology, the carrier of Lord Shiva. Nandi is widely worshipped throughout South India. This wonder is carved out of a huge stone boulder, and near it is a Lord Shiva temple under an intricate boulder. 3. Chennakesava Temple

It’s present in Madurai district amidst mountains, and to reach there, one has to climb 300 steps. Local tribes conduct puja in this famous temple of Nanjangud, which is a town 25 km from Mysore. This is indeed one of the best temples in Mysore . Srikanteshwara temple has a shiva linga, which in ancient times was worshipped by sage Gautama. This temple has a stunning Dravidian style gopura. 1. Chamundeshwari Temple

The most striking feature of the Chamundeshwari temple is its intricate and ornate architectural style and carvings, reflecting the profoundly artistic culture of Mysore. This iconic temple is one of the major religious sites and is situated at the top of the Chamundi Hills and is one of the oldest and revered sacred places to visit. The date of construction of the temple is disputed, but it is popularly said to have been built in the 12th century.   One of the greatest attractions of this temple is a statue of Nandi which can be witnessed after climbing 1000 feet. The figure of Nandi was built later in the 17th century. The entire temple complex has marvellous carvings all over the exterior and interior walls as well as the roof and pillars. A number of stone carved statues add to the aesthetic beauty of the place.

2. Nandi Statue

The Nandi statue is another one of the best religious sites in Mysore and is believed to have been constructed from a large but single rock. The idol is dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva’s mount, Nandi. Locals commonly refer to it as the Bull temple, and it is nestled thousands of feet atop the Chamundi Hills and is more than 100 years old.   The gorgeous bull is carved entirely of black stone and adorned with intricately carved jewellery hanging from his neck.  It was commissioned by the Dodda Devaraja Wodeyar. The Bull’s temple in Mysore houses the third largest and most significant Nandi idol in the country.

3. Gayatri Temple

The Gayatri temple in Mysore is a testimony to the city’s royal heritage, and the temple was constructed by the famous and last ruler of Mysore, Maharaja Jayachamaraja Wodeyar in the year of 1953. The Maharaja himself commissioned the most gifted sculptor of his times to carve and instate the idols. Inside the temple are the idols of the deities Shiva, Vishnu, and Ganesha.   The temple is dedicated to the worship of Goddess Devi and houses three more shrines inside the complex such as the Savitri, Gayatri, and Lakshmi shrines. 6. Bylakuppe Buddhist Golden Temple

Close to Mysore is the tranquil Tibetan-Buddhist settlement known as Bylakuppe, established by the Tibetan community who migrated to India. The settlement was built in the year 1961 and has been home to the Vajrayana Buddhist monks for a long time. It is one of the most serene religious sites you will come across.   The Golden Temple of the Tibetans is a sanctuary where religious knowledge is imparted and rituals are held. The Golden temple is also one of the most significant learning centres of Tibetan Buddhism- its origin, beliefs, and practices offering curious travellers the right insight into the unique culture. The Golden temple sees maximum footfall during the major Tibetan festivals, attracting tourists and locals alike with an auspicious vibe.   The very architecture of the temple is a refreshing treat to the eyes as it appears to be straight out of a movie set. The small homes feature tiled roofs surrounded by meandering roads. The way to the monastery is dotted with colourful prayer flags tethered onto lamp posts. 7. Shreekanteshwara Temple

The Shreekanteshwara temple, popularly known as Nanjundeswara temple is one of the most famous religious sites located in Nanjangud, a small unspoiled town situated 25 km from Mysore city, located on the banks of the river Kapila.   The very place Nanjangud derives its name from the temple of Nanjundeswara which was built by the highly revered Nanjundeswara Swami. The town is also called “Dakshina Kashi” or the Kashi of South. Tourists also know this place as the Varanasi of the South.   The temple is dedicated to the worship of Lord Shreekanteshwara who is an incarnation of Shiva. The architecture of this temple follows the archetypal Dravidian style of temple architecture.  The temple is a popular tourist destination, owing to the legends surrounding its foundation. Popularly, it is believed that Saint Gautama himself instated the Shiva Linga in the temple.   The Shreekanteshwara temple is vast, spreading over an area of one acre, and houses one hundred and twenty-one deity idols of all of Shiva’s incarnations, along with sixty-five Shiva Lingams. You will be mesmerized by the gorgeous ancient Sala towers over large pillared mandapas, and decorative old pillars.   The temple witnesses maximum footfall during the “Dodda Jaathre”, a 3-day festival held every year by the end of March. The festivities involve a street procession of colourful chariots that are pulled by devotees, and thousands flock to witness the holy ‘yatra.’ The path designated for the chariots to proceed is special and referred to as the ‘Ratha beedi.’

8. Shweta Varahaswamy Temple

One of the most famous temples visited by tourists is the Shweta Varahaswamy temple which sits near Mysore fort, within the premises of the Mysore Palace. The temple is dedicated to the worship of Lord Varaha, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The greatest attraction of this temple is the figurine of Shweta Varahaswamy, carved intricately out of stones. The walls of the temple are adorned with unique carvings, narrating the tales from Mahabharata on the pillars, doorways, and walls. The architecture of the temple is beautiful and ancient, following the Hoysala style of architecture.

Chamundeshwari Temple

Our journey begins with the awe-inspiring Chamundeshwari Temple, perched atop the Chamundi Hills. Dedicated to Goddess Chamundeshwari, an incarnation of Goddess Durga, this temple is a symbol of power and devotion.

As I climbed the steps, I marveled at the breathtaking panoramic views of Mysore city. Inside, the sanctum houses a magnificent idol of the goddess adorned with precious jewelry and embellishments. The temple’s intricate Dravidian architecture, adorned with colorful murals and sculptures, is a testament to the artistic brilliance of the bygone era.

Sri Nandi Temple

Just a short distance from the Chamundeshwari Temple, we discover the Sri Nandi Temple, where Lord Shiva’s vahana (vehicle), Nandi the bull, is worshipped. As I entered the temple, the sight of the majestic Nandi statue, carved out of a single black granite stone, left me spellbound.

The idol, measuring a staggering 16 feet in height and 24 feet in length, is a remarkable feat of craftsmanship. Devotees gather here to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva and his loyal companion, Nandi.

As I explored the temple, I found myself immersed in the tranquility of the surroundings. The sanctum houses a beautiful idol of Lord Ganesh, attracting devotees from far and wide. The temple’s peaceful ambiance makes it a perfect spot for introspection and seeking blessings.

Sri Bhuvaneshwari Temple

Nestled in the serene surroundings of the KRS Backwaters, the Sri Bhuvaneshwari Temple is a hidden gem that offers a tranquil escape from the bustling city. Dedicated to Goddess Bhuvaneshwari, the divine mother and embodiment of cosmic energy, this temple exudes a serene and mystical aura.

As I entered the temple complex, the rhythmic chants and the fragrance of incense filled the air, creating an atmosphere of deep spiritual resonance. The temple’s architecture is a blend of traditional Dravidian and modern styles, adorned with intricate carvings and sculptures that depict various aspects of the goddess. The breathtaking view of the backwaters adds to the overall charm of this divine abode.

Divine Abodes Beyond Mysore

Sri nimishamba temple.

Situated on the banks of the River Cauvery, the Sri Nimishamba Temple is a revered shrine dedicated to Goddess Nimishamba, an incarnation of Goddess Parvati. As I stepped into the temple premises, I was greeted by a sense of serenity and devotion. The temple’s architecture showcases a unique blend of Hoysala and Dravidian styles, with intricate carvings and decorative motifs adorning the walls and pillars.

Devotees flock here to seek the blessings of the goddess, known for granting wishes swiftly and bestowing divine grace. The temple’s picturesque location, overlooking the flowing river, adds to the spiritual ambiance and offers a peaceful retreat for seekers of solace.

Sri Mahabaleshwara Temple

Located in the town of Gokarna, around 160 kilometers from Mysore, the Sri Mahabaleshwara Temple holds immense significance in Hindu mythology and attracts devotees from far and wide. This ancient temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is believed to be one of the sacred places where Lord Shiva emerged from the earth.

A Guide To The Somnathpura Chennakesava Temple, Mysore

Also known as Kesava or Somnathpura temple, the Chennakesava temple is a popular pilgrimage site, located on the outskirts of Mysore City, Karnataka. This 13th-century masterpiece is the most exemplary example of Hoysala architecture. This popular temple is a tourist hotspot that attracts people from all across the globe.

How To Reach?

The nearest airport to Somnathpura is the Mysore Domestic Airport (42 Km, Airport Code- MYQ). From here, an hour’s drive by private transport or a cab will lead you to your destination. There are no direct buses from the airport.

The Mysore Railway Station (35 Km, Station code- MYS) is the nearest railway station to Somnathpura. This station is well-connected with major Indian cities like Bangalore, Chennai, Goa, Mumbai, Mangalore, Ernakulam, and more. From Mysore, Somnathpura can be reached only by roadways.

To reach Somnathpura by public transport, buses are the ideal mode of transport. After reaching Mysore, hop on a bus to Bannur. From Bannur, buses to Somnathpura frequent once every hour. A town bus will take you to Somnathpura village. From the bus stop, walk for 100 meters to reach the Chennakesava temple.

You can also hop on a shared tempo from Bannur. However, the most ideal method is to use personal transport.

Where To Stay?

There are no accommodation facilities available in the Somnathpura village. The nearest villages of Bannur and T Narasipura have decent lodging facilities.  

If you are looking for hotels to meet a certain standard of comfort, Mysore should be your choice.

Where To Eat?

There are a couple of small shops where you can get tea, coffee, snacks, and cool drinks. Proper dine-in restaurants for lunch, breakfast, or dinner are not available in the village.

Entry tickets to the Chennakesava temple can only be purchased online . You can reach the destination and book the tickets instantly. Also, note that the tickets are valid only on the day of purchase, making prior booking not only unnecessary but also invalid.

Note: Footwear is not allowed inside the temple. You have designated outlets that store your footwear free of cost at the entrance of the Kesava temple that you can utilize while you visit the temple.

The Somnathpura Chennakesava temple was built by Somanatha Dandanayaka, a high-ranking officer under the then Hoysala King Narasimha III between 1254 and 1291 AD. It took 68 years to build this architectural marvel which houses more than 5000 statues. 

With no use of modern equipment, about 500 sculptors worked every day for 2 generations to complete this 750-year-old temple. The 5 main sculptors were Masanithamma, Mallithamma, Bameya, Chameya, and Chowdeya. Among them, Mallithamma, a Tamil sculptor is most famous for her ingenious beautiful carvings. She is the one who carved the most statues including the northern Sikhara of the Janardhana cell. Even today you can find the names of these artists etched in the plinth of these sculptures.

Why The Name Somnathpura?

Somnath means Shiva. But this is not a temple to honor Lord Shiva, but Lord Vishnu. Since the person who constructed the temple was named Somanatha, the village and temple got its name Somnathpura. ‘Pur’ or ‘Pura’ or ‘Puram’ means village or dwelling, a common suffix that can be noticed in several names of villages and cities across India.

Why Poojas Are Not Done In Somnathpura Temple?

In 1311, Delhi Sultan Alauddin Khilji’s general, Malik Kafur attacked and looted the temple treasures. A few years later again in 1326, Muhammad Bin Tughlaq attacked the temple. The main idol of Keshava in the Gharbagraha (sanctum) was completely destroyed by him.

If you notice carefully, the noses of every sculpture in the temple were chopped off, and some of the leg and hand parts were smashed. As per Hindu customs, damaged or defaced idols should not be worshiped. Since the statues are deformed, poojas are not done in the Somnathpura temple.

Initially, poojas were done for about 20 years before the attack happened. In 1958, the archaeological department declared this temple a protected monument. The Archeological Survey of India (ASI) has maintained and preserved the monument since then.

Temple Inscriptions

Once you enter the temple, a huge stone slab can be found on your left. The inscriptions were written in the 13 century in the old Kannada script. The ancient script is challenging to interpret even for the native people of today. The inscriptions have details about the construction of the temple, the donations and contributions, and information about several patrons who helped in the upkeep of the temple.

A gist of what is written in the inscriptions is translated into English and kept on a board, for the visitors to understand.

Hoysala Architecture

The Hoysalas have a unique style of architecture. They built temples with soapstone or chalkstone and never used bricks, iron rods, or cement. These soap stones were taken from the Earth and they were smooth, soft, and had a soapy texture. They are carved and fused using the interlocking system which is scientifically known as the Cretaceous.

The temple is not carved out of a single stone, rather it was built using thousands of pieces put together. The lathe-turned pillars, delicately carved ceilings, and walls are the characteristic features of the Hoysala art. No machines were used during that time. Lathe-carved soapstone pillars were made by tying the chains to elephants and horses to rotate them.

Temple Layout

The Chennakesava temple stands on a raised platform, shaped in the form of a Nakshatra (star) with 36 corners. The stone elephants once stood marking each start point. 11 out of 15 elephants survived the damage during the attack.

Since Somnathpura has three temples or Garbhagriha, it is also called Trikutachala. The structures of Venugopala (Krishna), Keshava, and Janardhana (three different forms of lord Vishnu) are kept inside the elegantly carved Shikhara (temple tower). From the 64 idols kept in Agrahara rooms, the Archeological Department has replaced the original Kesava idol as the original one had been completely defaced. Though the Kesava idol that you see today is not the original the other two idols of Krishna and Janardhana are original.

The three vimanas (temple towers) which are of the same height, combine intricate artwork, in a plan that alternates rotating squares with star-shaped 16-petalled lotuses. As the tower rises, rhythmically reducing in height is capped with kalashas (pots).

Carvings On The Outer Wall

The basement of the outer wall is heavily ornamented with friezes of elephants, horses, nature, epic scenes from the Ramayana, the Mahabharata, and the Bhagavata Purana, small images with intervening turrets and columns with figures in between, and various avatars of Vishnu and Lakshmi among other gods and goddess.

There are a total of 547 completely unique-looking elephants, differing in either their expressions or posture. 194 primary god idols are there, out of which 164 are of lord Vishnu. Some noteworthy ones include the one of Lord Vishnu in a sitting and meditating position, the dancing Ganesh, Lakshmi, and Saraswathi, 10 avatars of Vishnu, depictions of ladies enduring pregnancy in all the stages, Chamundeshwari demolishing Maheshasura, etc.

There are 13 separate water outlets for three temples. Made from a single stone, they are 13 feet each, starting from Garbhagraha and stretching all the way outside. The abhiseka or pooja water would come out through these water outlets (before the attack happened).

The Outer Cells/ Rooms

There are a total of 64 cells around the main temple. Statues of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi were there in every room for which poojas were done (before the attack). But today, only a very few remain.

A few damaged pillars were rebuilt using sandstones in 1958. You can clearly notice the difference between the newly built sandstone pillars and the chalk stones from their color and texture.

Inside The Chennakesava Temple

You will notice the Vishnu temple guards (Dwarapalakas – Jaya and Vijaya) on either side of the main entrance. There are 18 pillars in total, of which the two pillars to the east of the central square are shaped like a 32-pointed star and are handmade.

The 16 ceilings are carved illustrating the blooming stages of a lotus. The Navaranga or the dancing platform is small and can be found at the center. The new door at the entrance was made in 1958 by the Archeological Department of India.

The circular pillars were done by joining 5 pieces together – Peeta, Kamba, Kumba, Kati, and Baravahaka, known as Panchastilasthamba in Sanskrit (Pancha – 5, Stila – stone, Sthamba – pillar).

The original temple was thought to have been built during the 12 th century. The famous Nandi statue is a short walk away and is located on top of the 1000 steps built in the 17 th century. Chamundeshwari Temple Mysore Timings

Located at the top of Chamundi Hills, Chamundeshwari temple is one of most prominent temples in Mysore. Dedicated to the Goddess Chamundeshwari (Chamundi), deity of the Mysore Royal Family and Mysore as well, this temple is about 1000 steps from the foot of the hill. The goddess is seated on a lion, killing the demon with her ‘trishul’. With its impressive architecture, great historical significance and surrounded with nature’s serenity at the Chamundi hills, this temple is still known as a prominent temples in India, attracting not only devotees but tourists from everywhere who come to witness its unshakable grandeur.

History and Architecture of Chamundeshwari Temple

Built in the Dravidian style of architecture, Chamundeswari Temple has a quadrangular structure. It has an impressive seven-tier tower called as ‘gopuram’ or ‘gopura’ and an equally imposing entrance which is known as ‘dwara’. These two can be seen even from the distance of many miles. Its silver gates still presents a glimpse into the royal past. Along with these, the temple is comprises of Sanctum Sanctorum, Navaranga Hall, Antharala Mantapa and Prakara. On the top of sanctum sanctorum, there is a small tower called ‘vimana’.

Originally, a small temple, it gained its present form, because of the expansions offered by the Mysore Maharajas. It is also said that animal sacrifices used to be performed here, which were stopped in 18th century. The temple used to be under the care of Mysore rulers.

The 1000 steps to the temple were built by Dodda Devaraja Wodeyar in 1659. It was during his reign that the massive sculpture of Nandi, Lord Shiva’s bull, was built. With a height of 16 feet and a length of 25 feet, it is considered to be one of the largest statues of Nandi in India. Around the neck of Nandi, you will find captivating pendant bells.

In 1827, Krishnaraja Wodeyar III renovated the temple. It was during his reign when the imposing entrance to the temple was built. Krishnaraja Wodeyar also presented a lion shaped vehicle to the temple, called as ‘Simha-vahana’ along with various other vehicles which are now used for religious and temple processions. There is also a 6 feet tall statue of Maharaja Krishnaraja Wodeyar III, in front of the sanctum sanctorum which is worth noticing. Statues of his three wives, Ramavilasa, Lakshmivilasa and Krishnavilasa are also located on his both sides.

The pyramidal tower at the entrance, which has been designed in the Dravidian style with a small statue of Ganesha, adds on to the beauty of this temple. There are many different images of Goddess at the silver-plated doorway.

Many rulers have contributed to the development of the temple and offered various valuable jewels and items to Goddess Chamundeshwari. Now devotees make offerings coconuts, fruits, and flowers to the deity.

This temple is perfect combination of architectural beauty with the piousness of firm beliefs and religious sentiments. You will find two more temples at the hill, dedicated to the Lakshmi Narayana Swamy and Mahabaleswara. Sri Mahabaleshwara temple is said to be the oldest temple on the hill. It is believed that devotees can eliminate their past sins by climbing the steps to the temple.

Chamundi Hills

Seen from all the corners of Mysore, Chamundi Hills stand majestically with a height of about 3,489 feet above the sea level. These hills are located at a distance of about 13 km from Mysore. These hills stand about 800 feet above the Mysore city.

These hills have been mentioned in the ancient Hindu scriptures such as ‘Skanda Purana’. Place named Trimuta Kshetra has been mentioned in these texts; this place is surrounded by eight hills and Chamundi Hills in one among them. Earlier, the hill used to be known as Mahabaladri after the Mahabaleswara Temple which is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is also the oldest temple on the hills. Afterwards, the hill came to be known as ‘Chamundi Hills’ after the Goddess Chamundi.

When on the Chamundi hills, tourists can get a bird’s eye view of Mysore. Tourists can get a glimpse of Mysore Palace, Dasara Exhibition grounds, Lalitha Mahal Palace, etc.

Chamundeshwari Temple Timings

The darshan and puja timings at Chamundeshwari Temple are 07.30 AM- 02.00 PM; 03.30 PM- 06.00 PM and 07.30 PM - 09.00 PM. For those who are interested in attending the pooja, visiting during these hours is ideal. The abhishekam timings are 6. 00 A.M to 7.30 AM in morning and 6.00 PM to 7.30 PM in evenings. On Friday it is from 5 AM to 6.30 AM. Every day, free meals are also organized for devotees from 12.30 PM to 2.30 PM.

Reaching Chamundeshwari Temple

One can spot Chamundi Hills while travelling words Mysore. Located only 13 km away these hills can be reached easily via road. From Mysore as well as Nanjangud, it is connected via road. Tourists can either take bus or hire a taxi to the hills. There are regular Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses to the hills at interval of less than 20 minutes from Mysore. As Chamundi Hills have been declared as no plastic zone, tourists are not allowed to carry plastic bags.

How to visit the Somnathpur Temple near Mysore

The Somnathpur temple near Mysore is one of the best examples of the intricate carvings that characterize most of the Hoysala architecture in Karnataka , India. At first sight, the Somnathpur temple, also known locally as the Chennakesava temple, looks relatively small in size. Especially if you compare it to places like the famous Madurai Meenakshi temple or Hampi . 

Yet, a visit to the 13th century Somnathpur temple can take up more time than you expect. Its beauty lies in the details. Somnathpur temple tells thousands of stories with the statues of gods and goddesses and relief carvings depicting Hindu epics from the Mahabaratha and the Ramayana. 

You don’t need to be Hindu to be impressed by the exquisite art works of the Somnathpur temple. It is only 35 kilometers from Mysore and an easy day trip from the city.

Somnathpur temple history

The Somnathpur temple was built during the rule of Hoysala king Narasimha the third. The king granted a large piece of land near Mysore to one of his army generals in the tradition of creating an agraharam. This meant that the land was a gift to someone from the Brahmin caste with the purpose of building a religious community. 

A typical agraharam had a road running north to south with a Shiva temple at one side and a Vishnu temple at the other side. General Somnatha took his job seriously and first built the Chennakesava temple dedicated to Vishnu and later also the Pancha linga temple dedicated to Shiva. More temples followed, but most were destroyed in the wars that followed between Hindus and Muslim sultanates. 

The Chennakesava temple was the biggest and most beautiful temple of Somnatha’s agraharam. Although it was damaged several times in history it was restored and repaired every time to keep its former glory. Among those who renovated the temple were the Vijanagara kings who also built Hampi . Nowadays it is simply known as the Somnathpur temple. 

Things to see in Somnathpur temple Mysore

The Somnathpur temple has a typical Hoysala model. The main temple is at the center and has three symmetrical sanctums around a common hall. Around the temple is a courtyard with pillared corridors forming an enclosure.

The entrance gate to the Somnathpur temple has a stone with inscriptions in the old Kannada language about the history of the temple. There are also miniature reliefs of Keshava, Janardhana and Venugopala. All three are forms of Krishna, who is an incarnation of Vishnu. One can find larger statues of them in the inner sanctums of Somnathpur temple.   

Pillared corridors

The pillared corridors that form the enclosure of the Somnathpur temple are rather simply decorated compared to the main temple. The corridors hold over 64 shrines whose statues include both Hindu as well as Jain idols. Unfortunately most statues are severely damaged.

The common hall of the temple has openings to the temple’s inner sanctums that once held the beautiful statues of Keshava, Janardhana and Venugopala. The statue of Keshava is a replica and the original is now on display in the London Museum. The other two statues of Vishnu are still in its original state.

The pillars in the common hall are beautifully decorated as well as the ceiling. Don’t forget to look up.  

Outer walls

The outer walls are the most beautiful part of the Somnathpur temple. The intricate carvings include statues of gods, goddesses and mythical beasts. They also depict stories from the Hindu epics of the Ramayana and Mahabaratha. 

The temple is raised on a platform with a broad walkway that allows you to walk around the temple. If you walk in a clockwise manner you can see the depictions of the Hindu stories in the right order. 

I must be honest though that as a foreigner it is hard to make sense of them. However, it is easy to pick out the battle scenes with warrior chariots as well as some erotic carvings from the Kama Sutra.  

Even with my limited understanding I could watch the images for hours and was deeply impressed by its detail. The horizontal bands of horses, peacocks and birds are equally magnificent. The animals in the band might all look the same, but look closely and you will see that each of them is different. It’s then that you realize what a true masterpiece of art the Somnathpur temple really is.   

Somnathpur village

Somnathpur is now just a small village on the banks of the Kaveri river and surrounded by lush green rice fields. It’s a great place to see a little bit more of rural Karnataka. 15 kilometers from the Chennakesava temple are the remains of the much smaller Pancha linga temple dedicated to Shiva.

If you feel like seeing more Hoysala temple art I can recommend the Belur and Halebid temples . They are further away from Mysore, but still possible as a long day trip.

Entrance fee : 300 npr for foreigners, 10 npr for indians

How to get to Somnathpur temple

From Mysore : Somnathpur temple is easy to reach from Mysore. Although there is no direct public transport it is a straight forward and cheap journey. There are very frequent KSRTC buses from Mysore bus station to Bannur (25 kilometer, 20 – 30 nrp). 

From Bannur it is only 9 kilometers to Somnathpur village. There are less frequent buses, but it is easy to find a shared tuk tuk. 

From Bangalore : From Bangalore you have two options. You can either travel to Mysore by direct bus or train and then follow the steps above. By KSRTC bus you can also take a bus from Bangalore bus station to Mandya. In Mandya get a KSRTC bus to Bannur. Both connections have frequent buses going in either direction. 

For the train from Bangalore to Mysore, you can check time tables and book your tickets online directly through the Indian railways (IRCTC). Unfortunately this is not always a straightforward process. For a small extra fee you can use 12goAsia or Makemytrip . 

Where to Sleep and eat

Somnathpur is a very small village and there are no guesthouses or restaurants. Small tea and coffee shops do sell some snacks. 

It is best to come early in the morning and bring some snacks and water with you. A day trip from Mysore to Somnathpur temple won’t take you all day so you can be back in Mysore for a late lunch

This hostel has friendly owners, a great breakfast menu and female only dorms. During the tourist season they have free yoga classes in the morning and you can rent bicycles to explore Mysore and its surroundings.

When to visit

The best time to visit Somnathpur temple is from September till March when the climate is pleasant. In April and May it starts to get very hot in Karnataka and in June it is the start of the monsoon season when rain becomes more frequent.

Use public transport : Mysore has a well-developed public transportation system. It is easy to reach Somnathpur temple by bus. Opt for public transport, whenever possible, instead of private cars to reduce carbon emissions.

Also known as Krouncha Pitham, Chamundi Temple was built in the 12th century CE, and is one among the 18 Maha Shakti Peethas representing the hair of Sati Devi. The most striking feature of the Chamundeshwari temple is its intricate and ornate architectural style and carvings, reflecting the profoundly artistic culture of Mysore.

Sri Ranganatha Swamy Temple, Srirangapatna

About 19 km from Mysore, Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple is a famous temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is one of the most important Vaishnavite temples in South India . The temple is considered as one of the Pancharanga Kshetras, the other four being Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple of Srirangam, Sarangapani Temple of Kumbakonam, Appakudathan Temple of Trichy, and the Parimala Ranganathaswamy Temple of Mayiladuthurai. Located inside the Srirangapatna Fort on the banks of the Kaveri River, it is one of the largest temples in Karnataka, among the most popular places to visit in Srirangapatna . With a blend of Hoysala and Viyanagara architectures, it consists of a Mahadwara with a huge tower followed by a mukha mandapa, maha mandapa, and Garbhagriha.  Also known as Aadi Rangam, the idol of Vishnu in the sanctum is reclining on the seven hooded Adishesha with his consort Lakshmi at his feet. This shrine is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India as a monument of national importance.

Melukote Temples

Melukote is a historical town located at a distance of 50 km from Mysore and 133 km from Bangalore. Also known as Thirunarayanapuram, it is one of the popular pilgrimage places in Karnataka and also one of the best places to visit near Mysore . The town is home to two popular temples, one is Cheluvanarayana Swamy Temple and the other one is Yoga Narasimha Swamy Temple. The main temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu known as Thirunarayana or Cheluvaraya. The temple has been under the patronage of the Mysore royal family and is endowed with valuable jewellery given to the lord by the Wodeyars. The Vairamudi festival held in March – April is the main festival of Sri Cheluvanarayana Swamy Temple and is attended by more than 400,000 people.

Built on a hillock, Yoga Narasimha Swamy Temple is another major temple in Melukote and is dedicated to Lord Narasimha. The main deity is in a seated posture with the Yogapatta. It is believed that the idol of Lord Yoganarasimha was installed in the temple by Prahlada. The temple is considered to be one of the seven holy centers devoted to the worship of Narasimha, and among the major places to visit in Karnataka . There is a Sanskrit Pathashala inside the temple that dates back to 1853. One has to climb nearly 400 steps to reach the temple from the foothills.

Shreekanteshwara Temple, Nanjangud

Situated on the banks of River Kapila, Nanjundeshwara Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, who is known as Nanjundeshwara or Srikanteshwara here. Built-in the Dravidian style, it is one of the popular religious places to visit near Mysore, and among the best religious places to experience Karnataka Tourism . The temple was constructed during the reign of the Ganga dynasty while the renovations were also done by the Hoysalas. That time the deity was called ‘Hakim Nanjunda’ that was being suggested by Tipu Sultan when his elephant got cured through the prayers offered to the deity. It houses three main deities, Lord Nanjundeshwara, Goddess Parvathi, and Lord Vishnu with Sridevi and Bhudevi. It is one of the most prominent pilgrimage sites near Bangalore . The temple witnesses maximum footfall during the “Dodda Jaathre”, a 3-day chariot festival held every year by the end of March.

Talakadu Temples

Talakadu is a historical place situated on the banks of the Kaveri River in Karnataka. About 49 km from Mysore, and 139 km from Bangalore, it is one of the popular Mysore tourist places , and among the famous weekend getaways from Bangalore . Talakadu had over 30 temples, most of them are buried in the sand today. Some of these temples have been excavated and are open to the public. Dates back to the times of the Ganga and Wodeyar dynasty, these ancient Hindu places of worship have been constructed by different South Indian rulers and dynasties. There are five temples dedicated to Lord Shiva – Pathaleshwara, Maruleshwara, Arkeshwara, Vaideeshwara, and Mallikarjuneshwara Temple. The Keerthinarayana temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu is a beautiful site with wonderful carvings. A famous festival called Pancha Linga Darshana is celebrated here once in 12 years. It is held on new moon day in the month of Karthika when two stars conjoin, the stars of Khuha Yoga and Vishaka.
