The beach resort of Swakopmund is situated on Namibia ’s Atlantic coast, approximately 219 miles (352 kilometers) due west of Windhoek. It is surrounded on three sides by the Namib Desert, and by towering golden dunes that plunge dramatically into the deep blue sea. It’s also the gateway to the Skeleton Coast , making it a haven for adventure seekers and adrenalin junkies , backpackers, and overland road-trippers. The town itself is steeped in German colonial culture, from its cuisine to striking architectural landmarks like the Woermannhaus and the Kaiserliches Bezirksgericht. Travelers come to soak up the atmosphere and to take part in activities that range from sandboarding to skydiving.

Swakopmund’s History

The town was founded in 1892 by Curt von François, the commissioner of Germany’s imperial colonial army. Von François (who also founded Windhoek two years previously) chose Swakopmund as the main harbor of German South West Africa on account of its abundant fresh water. Its name translates from the German for “Mouth of the Swakop.” The town received municipal status in 1909 but saw a decline in 1915 when German South West Africa was taken over by the Union of South Africa, and harbor operations were moved south to Walvis Bay. In 1990 Swakopmund gained independence along with the rest of Namibia and has been growing as a tourist hub and resort town ever since.

Top Things to Do

Swakopmund has earned itself a reputation as Namibia’s adventure capital, and as such, visitors are spoiled for choice in terms of things to do. Options range from relaxing or fishing on the beach, to riding camels at the Swakopmund Camel Farm or admiring the world’s largest cluster of quartz crystals at the downtown Kristall Galerie . The most popular pastimes are listed below.

Swakopmund Museum

Located near the beach in the center of town, Swakopmund Museum is the largest privately run museum in Namibia. Its displays include examples of indigenous plants, taxidermied desert animals, and artifacts relating to the region’s native and colonial inhabitants. Of particular interest is the People of Namibia exhibit, which offers an insight into the traditional heritage of Namibia’s many different ethnic groups, from the Herero to the Himba. The museum is open every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets cost 30 Namibian dollars (around $2) for adults and 10 Namibian dollars (around 68 cents) for children.

National Marine Aquarium

Namibia’s only aquarium showcases the fascinating marine life of the cold Benguela Current. Wander through an underwater walkway that affords close-up views of rays and sharks, or find yourself enchanted by the playful antics of the aquarium’s African penguins and Cape fur seals. Keen fishermen can also get an idea of the species that can be caught off Swakopmund’s beaches, including spotted grunter, silver cob, and west coast steenbras. The aquarium is open Tuesdays through Saturdays, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Desert Tours

Most visitors will want to make a trip into the surrounding Namib Desert, and there are many different ways to do so. Companies like Living Desert Adventures offer 4x4 Land Rover and Landcruiser safaris, which take you through the spectacular dunes in search of rare desert fauna, including the transparent Namib dune gecko desert chameleons, and sidewinder snakes. You can also explore by bicycle, courtesy of Swakopmund Fat Bike Tours , go sandboarding or head out on an adrenalin-fuelled quad-bike tour with Desert Explorers .

For an aerial view of the collision between sand and sea, you could sign up for a scenic flight. Alternatively, you could opt to throw yourself out of a perfectly functional aircraft with the Swakopmund Skydiving Club . Based at Swakopmund Airport, the company offers tandem skydives from 10,000 feet, with a 35-second free fall and a five-minute canopy ride. If you’re feeling courageous, you can even opt for a full day of training followed by a solo static line or free fall jump! Tandem skydives cost 2,500 Namibian dollars ($169) per person, with added costs for film footage.

Many companies offer exciting day tours from Swakopmund. Head south to Walvis Bay and embark upon a harbor cruise for the chance to see Cape fur seals, African penguins, and three species of dolphin (including the endemic Heaviside’s dolphin) up close. Birding trips take you to the Walvis Bay Lagoon, where thousands of lesser and greater flamingoes congregate, and coastal rarities like the Damara tern may be spotted. North of Swakopmund lies the Cape Cross seal colony , one of the largest in the world. En route, you’ll stop to see Skeleton Coast shipwreck, the Zeila .

Swakopmund’s culinary scene is cosmopolitan with restaurants serving Indian, Italian, African, and Portuguese fare. German cuisine is a highlight, though, with top spots including the Strand Hotel’s Brewer & Butcher and Swakopmund Brauhaus . The former serves schnitzel and schweinshaxe alongside microbrews made at the in-house brewery. You can enjoy your meal on an outdoor terrace overlooking the water, or in front of big indoor sports screens. At Swakopmund Brauhaus, the Bavarian decor and German draught beers make it easy to forget you’re in Africa. For authentic German pastries and confectionary, pay a visit to CafĂ© Anton.

Alternatively, Ocean Cellar, BlueGrass Restaurant, and Jetty 1905 all pair fresh seafood with captivating ocean views. Jetty 1905 enjoys a historic location on Swakopmund’s landmark jetty.

Whether you're a backpacker on a budget or a luxury traveler with cash to spare, there’s accommodation for everyone in Swakopmund. The most upscale option is probably Strand Hotel Swakopmund , which offers a scenic location on the Mole, Swakopmund’s historic sea wall. It’s surrounded by water on three sides and offers immaculately decorated rooms and suites in addition to a spa and three of the town’s best restaurants. Beach Lodge Swakopmund is an excellent midscale choice, with a beachfront location and a boutique feel. It has just 19 rooms (including two specifically for families) and a fantastic second-floor seafood restaurant.

Cornerstone Guesthouse is the top-ranked B&B choice on TripAdvisor and also offers beautiful self-catering apartments. It’s located in the old town within walking distance of the beach and top tourist attractions. For budget travelers, it’s hard to go wrong at Swakopmund Backpackers. Here, you’ll find affordable dormitories and private rooms, a self-catering kitchen and a garden complete with a barbecue area—perfect for braaing and swapping stories with your fellow travelers.

Weather & When to Go

Although Swakopmund has a desert climate with very little rain (less than .78 inches per annum), its proximity to the frigid Atlantic means that temperatures are consistently mild all year round. Average air temperatures range from 59 degrees F (15 degrees C) in winter to 77 degrees F (25 degrees C) in summer, and the sea is always cold. Fog is a defining feature of Swakopmund’s weather and can be present for more than 180 days of the year. It reaches many miles inland and is one of the main reasons for the shipwrecks that litter the Skeleton Coast. Although the town is a year-round destination, the best time to visit is during the Namibian summer (November to February) when the weather is warmest.

Getting There

Because Namibia is a popular self-drive destination , most visitors arrive in Swakopmund by road. It is 219 miles (352 kilometers) west of Windhoek on the B2, and 27 miles (43 kilometers) north of Walvis Bay on the same road. If you’re traveling southwards from Hentiesbaai, you’ll drive on the C34 for 47 miles (75 kilometers). For those that don’t have their own vehicle, private shuttle bus service Town Hoppers offers a daily route in between Windhoek and Swakopmund. You can opt for door-to-door or bus stop-to-bus stop service, with rates starting from 230 Namibian dollars ($15) per person.

Swakopmund Airport (SWP) is used exclusively for charter flights and is not serviced by the national carrier , Air Namibia. Instead, it’s usually cheaper to catch the daily scheduled flight to Walvis Bay from Windhoek and then travel on to Swakopmund by bus or taxi. The Desert Express train service offers luxury overnight journeys from Windhoek, with meals and excursions en route included.

The 12 Best Things to do in Swakopmund, Namibia

Swakopmund is a coastal town in Namibia that sits about 225 miles west of Windhoek. Sandwiched between the massive Namib Desert and the South Atlantic Ocean, this charming little town offers plenty of outdoor adventures to keep visitors entertained for several days. It’s a must-see destination when touring this beautiful country.

Don’t miss the top 12 things to see and do during your visit to Swakopmund, Namibia!

Preparing for Your Visit to Swakopmund

Things to know before you go.

  • Namibia accepts two kinds of currency: the Namibian Dollar (NAD) and the South African Rand. However, both do not hold the same value in South Africa so be sure to convert your currency from NAD prior to leaving the country. At the time of writing (March of 2018) the exchange rate was 11.79 NAD to $1 USD. So if we say that something costs 100 NAD that’s just about $8.35 USD.
  • English is the official language of Namibia but there are more than 11 languages that are indigenous to the country and more than 49% of the population speak Oshiwambo. It is very common for Namibians to speak two or three languages. Most people you’ll encounter will speak English.
  • Tipping is commonplace in most tourist areas of Namibia. Expect to give a “car guard” 2-3 NAD if you are making a quick trip or 5 NAD if you plan on being away from your car for an hour or more. 10% at restaurants is customary if you are satisfied with your service.
  • Visitors from the United States, South Africa, Australia, Germany, Canada, Japan, and the UK qualify for a 90-day visa on arrival. Check your visa requirements here .

Best Time to Visit Swakopmund

The climate in Namibia is pleasant year-round and can be visited pretty much any time of the year. The dry season is May to October and if you are interested in seeing wildlife that is the best time of the year to plan your trip as the animals will gather around the watering holes. However, July to October is high season so you will need to book your car and accommodations well in advance.

The wet season is between December and March although Namibia receives far less rain than its neighbors. Animals will be more scattered throughout the parks during the wet season, which lowers your chances of spotting them easily. April and May experience very moderate temperatures with little or no rainfall and October to February can be very hot.

Traveling in the off-season is recommended as the weather is pleasant and there are far fewer crowds to contend with.

Getting to Swakopmund

Swakopmund is located about 225 miles west of Windhoek which is the airport that most visitors fly into. The drive from Windhoek to Swakopmund will take about three and a half hours. Driving in Namibia is easy, and all the roads are paved between Windhoek and Swakopmund so you won’t need a 4×4 for this stretch.

Safety in Swakopmund

Namibia is an incredibly safe country (even if you’re traveling alone in Africa ); however, the increase in tourism over the years has also brought an increase in car theft. Rental car smash and grabs can be common in cities when tourists leave valuables in plain sight. This is rare but not uncommon in Swakopmund.

Many young entrepreneurs wait in busy parking lots with an offer to watch your car for a small tip which is worth paying for added security. Expect to give them around 2-3 NAD if you are making a quick trip or 5 NAD if you plan on being away from your car for an hour or more.

Tipping in Namibia

Tipping in Namibia is expected so keep small change on you at all times. Expect to tip around 10% in restaurants, 5-10 NAD for your gas station attendant, and around 5 NAD to the person bagging your groceries at the supermarket. Also, be sure to tip your hotel staff and any tour guides during your stay.

Travel Vaccines

The World Health Organization and Centers for Disease Control recommend getting the following standard travel vaccines prior to visiting Namibia: Hepatitis A and B, Typhoid, and Yellow Fever.

The risk of contracting malaria in Swakopmund is low year-round. The side effects of pills that protect against malaria are often worse than the disease itself and are generally not recommended.

2. Drive Along the Skeleton Coast

Best Things to do in Swakopmund, Namibia: Huab Lagoon on the Skeleton Coast

Stretching from Swakopmund all the way to Angola, Namibia’s Skeleton Coast has been called both “the land God made in anger” and “the gates of hell”. Sadly many ships have wrecked along this desolate coastline over the years, notably, the name was coined by the author of the book chronicling the Dunedin Star shipwreck in 1942.

The current here is strong and scattered along the shore are the remains of both animal skeletons and ship remains. And because this area of Namibia is so forbidding, it is also one of the most pristine coastlines in the world. You will be in awe of the views along your drive up the C34 highway.

There are a few cool stops as you drive north on the C34 highway. At the Cape Cross Seal Reserve, you’ll find thousands of stinky, noisy fur seals. You can walk along the fenced walkway to safely see them up close. And the Huab Lagoon is a stunning pink salt lagoon sitting just inland from the ocean – it’s just one more feature of the Skeleton Coast that will make you feel like you have landed on another planet.

You’ll find thousands of flamingos hanging out in the shallow waters of the Namib Desert coast, and Walvis Bay is a particular hot spot for these beautiful birds. And being that the bay is just about 20 minutes south of Swakopmund, bird enthusiasts and amateur photographers will rejoice!

The flamingos prefer to congregate in three areas; the lagoon located southwest of Walvis Bay, near the Salt Works complex which supplies over 90% of South Africa’s salt, and Bird Paradise which is a sanctuary for the birds.

Discover the Top 10 Things to Do in Swakopmund (full guide!)

swakopmund namibia tourist attractions

I want to prove to you that I didn’t have a Namibian heat stroke when I put Swakopmund at the top of my “Best Places in Namibia” list. Spoiler: it’s not just because I like snakes and lizards, I promise. My fingers aren’t crossed behind my back right now or anything!

I know what you're thinking: This place whose name sounds like a made-up word is the bee’s knees of Namibia?! You betcha! There’s so much to do within a small area! In Namibia, where hundreds of km/miles of driving per day is the norm, having things close by is a luxury.

Tip: If you’re researching Swakopmund, you’re probably planning a trip to Namibia, right? Better come prepared: read up on self-driving in Namibia before you do something stupid like rent a 2WD or forget your international driver’s license.

Swakopmund Namibia map and overview

Map of Namibia’s best places to visit

Here’s a zoomed-out map to give you an idea of where some of the highlights of Namibia are. You can read about the best places in Namibia in this article .

Swakopmund has the 3 rd highest population in Namibia, a whopping 45,000 people. It is a coastal city with strong German influences in its architecture—one of the most famous buildings is the public library, which is a half-timber house a couple of blocks from the beach.

The city is a popular beach resort and adventure center . I’ll explain all about the adrenaline-pumping and other more chill Swakopmund tourist attractions.

We stayed in a fantastic hotel in Swakopmund , too, so I’ll tell you about that to save you the frustration of finding accommodation that looks great in the online photos but turns out to be a semi-dump in real life. A common occurrence in Namibia!

Map of activities in Swakopmund, Namibia

Swapkomund Namibia map. See my Google Maps list of places —no need to find everything on the map for yourself, that's what you have me for!

My top tips for Swakopmund :

  • The city gets almost no rain whatsoever. Instead, it gets thick fog—the reason there are so many shipwrecks in the area. Fog can make driving on the coastal roads dangerous, too! More about driving in Namibia.
  • There are a lot of things to do in Swakopmund, which is unique in Namibia. Stay at least 3 nights. Our favorite Swakopmund hotels: Desert Rendezvous , Driftwood Guesthouse , The Stiltz
  • Even if you don’t love snakes as much as I do, seeing serpents is one of the best activities in Swakopmund. Definitely take the Living Desert Tour, it was spectacular!

Swakopmund activities and tourist attractions

Besides being a great base for other Namibian hotspots like the Namib Naukluft National Park and the Skeletal Coast , Swakopmund pulls out all the stops in the activities department, too. And a few snakes and other cute critters.

These places are must-visits on any Namibia itinerary :

1. Tommy’s Living Desert Tour—Meeting my beloved sand snakes

Photos of the desert and animals on Tommy’s Living Desert Tour in Namibia

I totally fell in love with all of the critters on Tommy’s Living Desert Tour

First up and my personal favorite thing to do in Swakopmund: the Living Desert Tour . Get ready to meet some of the cutest sand snakes and lizards in their natural habitat. Don’t you just love the thought of a sand viper hiding in the sand right in front of you? I do.

And the guides? They're the desert gurus , making the tour both informative and entertaining. Everyone is trained by Tommy, the owner, and you can tell they know their stuff and love what they do.

After you find every living thing in your vicinity, you get to prance around on the dunes, and end your morning with a view out to the Atlantic. Epic. One of the best tourist attractions in Namibia .

Make sure to bring a hat , because you’ll be in the sun non-stop.

The tour takes 4–5 hours during which they take you into the desert a little south of Swakopmund and then proceed to look for and find all kinds of creatures. They have a tour every morning and sometimes in the afternoons, too, depending on the weather (read: if it’s hot as heck, they aren’t going).

  • Tommy’s Living Desert Tour
  • Tours run daily at 8 am
  • Tickets cost NAD 850 (USD 45) per person and include drinks and snacks

It’s hard to describe just how cool this tour was! Luckily, photos exist! Here are some more:

Finding creatures in the desert in Namibia

Tommy’s Living Desert Tour is the best thing you will do in Namibia! It’s like a scavenger hunt, but with wild snakes and lizards

Sitting in a dune in the desert in Namibia

I get tired of the desert, but this place was awesome

2. Skeleton Coast (Cape Cross specifically)

Cape Cross Seal Reserve views of the seals and coast, activities in Swakopmund, Namibia

You can see the wooden walkway that helps you walk among the seals unharmed—they can bite

The Skeleton Coast is one of the must-see destinations in Namibia , and it’s best visited while being based in Swakopmund .

And yes, this next tip on things to do in Swakopmund is a little ways away from the city , but I feel it still counts, because, well, distances are relative in Namibia! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the fact that these places are within a couple hours’ drive make them count as “in” Swakopmund.

Read more about the distances in Namibia in my self-driving guide .

Cape Cross is to the north of Swakopmund, so if you’re staying at the charming Driftwood Guesthouse, you’re in a great spot to head out there . We stayed in Desert Rendezvous , which is about midway on the drive from Swakopmund to Cape Cross.

For me, Cape Cross is the highlight of the Skeleton Coast. I didn’t care much for the northern bit of the Skeleton Coast, the part with the dead ship carcasses. It’s just a bunch of sand and some shipwrecks, that’s it, and I see no reason to see more sand in Namibia.

Cape Cross, on the other hand, is a big YES in my book ! It’s in the southernmost part of Skeleton Coast, 120 km (74 miles) from Swakopmund to be exact, which is basically next door by Namibian standards. The drive Swakopmund to Cape Cross will take you about 1.5 hours .

The massive colony of seals that awaits you there will have you mesmerized as they frolic in the waves and nap all over the beach. Especially the little pups and the more menacing-looking mothers.

Another stunner? The smell! In a 100,000+ member colony, there’s quite a few deaths and no clearing away of the carcasses, and I’m not lying when I say that it took us something like 4 days to wash out that gnarly smell from our hair . Maybe don’t wear your fancy clothes, either, because I don’t know what y’all wash your clothes in, but death is a tough stain to tackle.

There is a wooden walkway that you can walk on to see the seals from—it’s right on the beach, so you’re literally right next to the animals.

  • Cape Cross Seal Reserve on Google Maps
  • Parking is easy and costs NAD 50 (USD 2.50)
  • Tickets cost NAD 150 (USD 8.50)

3. Namibia Dune 7—Conquering the highest dune in
?

Dune 7 in Namibia

Dune 7

Visiting Namibia’s Dune 7 is like going to a sandbox on steroids —it’s the highest dune in Namibia (NOT in the world, as I’ve seen written elsewhere?!) at 383 m (1250 ft). It’s a big pile of sand, yes, but it’s the biggest pile of sand you’ll see in the country, so go climb that bad boy ! It’s great fun!

It’s no easy feat, especially if you leave your brain at home and choose to go climbing Dune 7 in the middle of the day in the summer. Just don’t. The sand is as hot as the devil’s asshole and it’s so soft and mushy that your feet will burn and you’ll be going two steps forward and one slide back the whole time.

A view from the top of Dune 7 down towards the parking and service area

Taking a look back at the “parking lot” at Namibia Dune 7

If you are visiting in the hotter months, go early in the morning when the sand is still cool and hard (the Namib Desert is hot in the day, but freezing at night!). I’d say be there by 9 am for the best results. OR head out for sunset , when the cold is creeping back in, cooling that sand mound the heck down.

Weather tip: The best months to visit Namibia are May to September aka the winter.

You can easily drive to parking lot that’s just a flat area under Dune 7. For example, if you’re coming from The Stiltz , it’ll take just under 40 minutes. Google Maps will take you there when you tell it to navigate to Dune 7. You’ll be asked to pay NAD 100 per person to be able to stop there and climb the dune. Bring cash.

There are toilets available, too, but you want to avoid them unless your breakfast is not staying down and it’s urgent. Avoid further frustration by BYOTP—bringing your own toilet paper.

Fun dune fact: Dune 7 is barely a blip compared to the world’s actual tallest dune —Duna Federico Kirbus in Argentina. At 1,230 m (4,000 ft), it’s just a few grains of sand shy of UK’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis . Now THAT’s a pile of sand! (By the way, we loved the Ben and all the other amazing fairyland-ish hikes in Scotland , so if you’re looking for a change of scenery—cooler, no sand in your ears— check out Scotland for your next holiday!).

4. Skydiving and Quad Biking

Quad biking in the Namib Desert near Swakopmund

Sand, sand, and more sand! Perfect for quad biking

Swakopmund is a mecca of skydiving , which I skipped since I don’t have a death wish just yet.

If you're not quite ready to take that leap of faith, you could try tearing through the desert on a quad bike instead. It’s not just any desert—the Namib desert is a long sliver of sand copying the entire coast of Namibia, all the way up to Angola and down into South Africa . It’s the oldest desert in the world.

Fun fact: The Namib Desert may be around 80 million years old. Compared to that, the Sahara Desert is a baby, at 5 million years max. The Atacama Desert in Chile is the only other desert in the world that can challenge the Namib’s age, though nobody has really put a number on it. Atacama is the driest place on Earth.

Quad biking is an adrenaline-pumping adventure without the risk of falling from the sky with a shit parachute (I know I’d be the one to get it). You’ll also probably see a snake or two, too, which might be more than enough excitement for some.

Quad biking was good fun, I’d do it again in a heartbeat. There are many adventure tour shops in town, most with really good reviews , so just go with whichever tickles your fancy.

Other desert activities in Swakopmund : sandboarding, dune buggies, fat biking (I don’t know if that’s the official name, but you go out on bicycles fitted with those really fat tires).

This is me in cat form

You know how after you go to the beach, you still have sand in your bag and shoes 3 days later ? Vacationing in Namibia is like playing beach volleyball all day every day, only to realize there is no sea to wash off in anywhere ever .

So, you’ll love coming back to your hotel room each night, fighting with your travel partner about who gets to shower first.

Here are my reliable recommendations for Swakopmund hotels:

5. Catamaran cruises: Dolphins and pelicans galore!

Catamaran cruise, Swakopmund activities, Namibia

Are you looking at the seals or are they looking at you?

If you're feeling a bit too sandy and you're craving some watery goodness instead, I've got just the thing for you! Namibia's got a whole bunch of critters that prefer the wet life, and if you want to catch a glimpse of 'em, you'll have to say goodbye to the solid ground.

Hop on a catamaran in Walvis Bay and spend 3–4  hours being entertained by dozens of cooky pelicans and cormorants that are called to the boat by fish being held out, allowing them to swoosh by to collect their snack. You’ll also see seals, dolphins, and, if you’re lucky, even whales!

Most tour operators also stop at an oyster farm and give you a tasting of the slippery suckers.

Catamaran Dolphin Cruises and Sun Sail Catamarans Namibia are two operators with great reviews.

6. Swakopmund Snake Park

If you were a snake, you’d be calling yourself lucky to be living in Namibia—it’s snake paradise. At least the 81 snake species that live there think so! I have a thing for serpents, and since you probably aren’t going to see any of the big guys on the Living Desert Tour, we were happy to go see them at the Snake Park.

Visiting the Snake Park in Swakopmund, Namibia

Hello, my lovelies

It is the absolute best reptile exhibit I've ever seen. They've got all kinds of Namibian snakes, including the deadly Black Mamba, the stunning Cape Cobra, the Zebra Snake, and my favorite, the Puff Adder. These snakes are both adorable and dangerous , which makes them all the more captivating to stare at from a couple of centimeters away (through glass, obviously).

There are also other critters such as big lizards and turtles, but I was too fascinated by the snakes to give them the time of day.

  • Snake Park on Google Maps
  • Open daily 9 am–7 pm, 10 am–4 pm on Sundays
  • Tickets cost NAD 100 (USD 5) for adults

7. Relax at the amazing Driftwood Guesthouse

Swakopmund isn’t just adventure and thrills—or it doesn’t have to be. Life is your oyster, right? Make the best of the relatively large range of accommodations available and choose a hotel that you’ll be happy to come back to after a day of adrenaline .

But, let me tell you, if you thought choosing a good hotel in Namibia was easy, think again. It's not just a matter of scrolling through a bunch of pretty pictures and booking the one that catches your eye. It’s all a big, fat lie! Those pictures may be worth a thousand words, but they're coming from a lying liar who lies !

Trust me, I've been there, done that , and bought the T-shirt. The photo editing I’ve seen in Namibia is like none other.

Here is a great option of where to stay in Swakopmund that looks at least as good in person as in the photos:

Driftwood Guesthouse hotel in Swakopmund, Namibia

There’s no shortage of wood @ Driftwood Gues thouse

I don’t know how they do it, but you feel so welcome at Driftwood Guesthouse you’d think you own the place! As soon as you step through the door, it's almost like they've been expecting you, and boy are they happy to see you !

The breakfast is amazing , the small central courtyard provides a place to relax, and the rustic wood furniture adds character. One of the best Swakopmund hotels, hand down.

Driftwood Guesthouse is located a couple km to the north of central Swakopmund right by the beach in a quieter area, making relaxing (and parking) a breeze.

8. Flamingos in the bay

If you're more of a nature buff, don’t feel like falling from the sky, hugging snakes OR driving like a maniac (if you’re self-driving in Namibia , you’re already doing plenty of that), head over to the pretty bay in Swakopmund to see flamboyances of flamingos . Yes, a group of flamingos is called a flamboyance. They are so extra I just can’t even with them.

Head out to Walvis Bay or Sandwich Harbor for some pink bird spotting.

Personally, I'm not a huge fan—I mean, they're just pink birds , right? But I get it, they're an Instagrammable sight, so snap away. It's still worth seeing them up close (maybe I’m just overflamingo’d from Paracas National Reserve in Peru ).

Flamingos in the bay near Swakopmund in Namibia

Look, it’s a flamboyance! I promise they were pink

Another fun fact: The flamingo’s knees aren’t their knees—that joint you see when they’re chillin’ on one leg is actually the ankle. They do have knees, just way higher up, hiding under their pretty pink feathers.

9. See Swakopmund town and boardwalk

Swakopmund, the citiy of Namibia

Beyond the thrilling Swakopmund activities, you'll definitely want to explore the city itself.

Thanks to its German colonial roots, you'll spot traces of history all around town, from the charming, restored houses and the Lutheran Church , to the iconic half-timber Woermannhaus . Once a hub for German traders, this spot now houses a library and art gallery, and offers some pretty decent views from its (not-so-tall) tower.

You might stumble onto the craft market in the center of town and even catch a glimpse of some Himba tribe women offering handmade jewelry and a photo op (for a fee, of course).

And what's a beach town without some good old-fashioned beach bummery ? Whether you're a local or a tourist, soaking up the sun and taking leisurely strolls on the jetty are Swakopmund must-dos. Oh, and don't forget to make your way to the tip of Palm Beach to catch a glimpse of the lighthouse.

Speaking of the lighthouse, there’s some beer-tasting to be had closeby...

10. Find the best restaurants in Swakopmund

The best restaurant in Swakopmund, Brewer & Butcher, Namibia

Eating well in Swakopmund: Brewer & Butcher @ t he Strand Hotel

I’m all about eating great food in restaurants, but Namibia does not make it easy. You’ll be able to find some good spots in Windhoek (the capital), possibly in or near Etosha National Park , and Swakopmund. That’s about it. Namibia’s population is so sparse that you should generally be prepared to eat full meals in your hotel as its usually the only place with a decent restaurant in a radius of 50 km.

That said, Swakopmund has some of the best restaurants in Namibia, though that obviously doesn’t mean much since restaurants are few and far between. The German influence rubs off on the restaurants in Swakopmund, which can only mean one fabulously hopsy thing: beer !

If you're a fan of beer, you're in luck: there’s a restaurant in Swakopmund that has its very own brewery — Brewer & Butcher, a cool spot close to the lighthouse. You can imagine we were regulars there! You could mistake it for a real-life hipster German beer hall if it weren’t for the sea views and light fixtures made of animal horns (and not dear antlers). Beer was great, food was great, service was a little slow, but we didn’t really mind. Brewer & Butcher is part of t he Strand Hotel.

Another good choice is The Tug (because it’s made from an old tugboat). This is the place to have seafood in Swakopmund , but it’s not like they don’t have anything else. The beauty of this place lies in its location, too-if you were any closer to the sea, you’d actually have to be on a (tug) boat.

About me

Hi! I’m Jan. I live in Prague, Czech Republic. I try to experience the best the world has to offer, and I don’t cease to be impressed. But if I’m not, I’m sure going to tell you! You can count on my full honesty and real opinions here. No bullcrap. I own and run several companies, which gives me great (but not unlimited) freedom to roam the world.

I was first inspired to start this blog by my own experience of researching for upcoming trips—I often struggle with a lack of good information, accuracy, and authenticity of resources. You wouldn’t believe how many “travel bloggers” don’t even visit the destinations they write about!

My goal with this blog is to provide you with complex and practical information so that you can plan your own vacation, complete with insights you’d only get if you visited the place. I also put together itineraries that are fully planned out trip guides.

Another aspect that drives this platform is my curiosity about the history, geography, politics, and economy of each country I visit, so I try to include this information in my articles, too. It’s always great to get the bigger picture, right?

And just to be clear, I am not trying to compete with backpacking blogs or provide hacks for an economical and affordable experience. My vacations follow the standard pattern of traveling by plane, staying in good hotels, and renting a car on the spot to get around. I’m also always up for a fantastic meal, though I don’t shy away from local delicacies and street food, either.

Best Things to do in Swakopmund, Namibia

Sunset at swakopmund jetty.

It isn’t too often that an unfinished structure becomes one of the main attractions in any city, but that is exactly what has happened in the case of the Swakopmund jetty.

Swakopmund pier, Swakopmund Namibia

Located just south of the lighthouse, the Swakopmund Jetty is a popular gathering point for locals and tourists alike who flock here nightly to enjoy the radiant setting of the sun as it melts into the Atlantic Ocean. The jetty was abandoned in the early 20th century, but this iron pier has stood the test of time.

Luckily, the area around the jetty is filled with cafes, bars and restaurants providing a top vantage point to enjoy the daily show.

Unique Colonial Architecture

Another popular thing to do in Swakopmund is to stroll around town and enjoy the charm of the city’s splendid colonial German architecture.

For many, the unique architecture of the city tops the list of Swakopmund attractions. Local landmarks such as the Woermannhaus , a former trading house from the turn of the century, continue to play a major role in the city’s cultural identity. Also, be sure to pay a visit to the Bahnhof , once the city’s main railway station which today stands as another of its most beautiful colonial remnants.

Swakopmund Namibia

Down by the ocean, the Swakopmund lighthouse has stood for over a century as a warning beacon for ships traveling along Namibia’s notorious Skeleton Coast.

Hit the shops at Brauhaus Arcade

As a major city, drawing people from across Namibia to live and work,  it provides a great opportunity to purchase locally handmade items such as leatherwork, textiles as well as art.

Brauhaus Arcade, Swakopmund, Namibia

If you are looking for fun things to do in Swakopmund, consider visiting the Brauhaus Arcade , a complex of restaurants, cafes and shops with a distinctly German ambiance. For a true Swakopmund shops experience, head for a pint of locally brewed Helles or Weissbier before exploring distinctly African paintings from talented local artists.

Local Cultural Institutions

Swakopmund is renowned as a center of science, culture and the arts not just in Namibia but across southern Africa.

Swakopmund Museum provides an opportunity to gain an insight into the city’s rich history. The museum is located next to the Lighthouse and the focus here is on Namibian culture and wildlife, with intriguing exhibitions on the colonial-era, providing an insight into a turbulent past.

things to do in swakopmund namibia

The local Fine Art Gallery is the perfect place to admire and purchase local art. The selection is diverse, with traditional and modern examples, yet the running theme here is the fact that everything are local artists’ creations.

Another option for local art is African Kirikara, an art gallery and shop specializing in locally woven textiles. If you are lucky, you might just catch one of the artists in the process of weaving, an incredibly intricate process that many find captivating.

Sample Delicious Local Cuisine

Nowhere else in Namibia can foodies enjoy such a wide variety of cuisines, with German-style cafes sitting beside modest locales serving up freshly grilled seafood. The restaurants are as diverse as they are delicious!

For a taste of Swakopmund’s German colonial heritage, a trip to Swakopmund Brauhaus is a must. Order a plate of eisbein along with a pint of cold beer brewed locally for a real taste of the city’s special version of German culture.

Another great option for German food is KĂŒcki’s Pub , which serves traditional Bavarian fare in cozy surroundings.

Africa Namibia Swakopmund The Tug food 07961

Sampling the city’s famously delicious seafood is a must for anybody visiting the town, with two restaurants especially standing out for their fabulous fish dishes.

The Jetty Swakopmund 1905 is located on the famous pier and serves up refined seafood dishes in slick surroundings whilst nearby The Tug Swakopmund is something of a local institution situated on an old turn of the century tugboat. Whether you choose the mussels, oysters or a piece of freshly grilled fish, everything on the menu here is as fresh as can be and was probably plucked from the ocean that very morning. One of the big benefits of the Tug is that they offer a complimentary shuttle for those guests who do not have their own Swakopmund car hire.

Swakopmund, Namibia

Last but not least, Brewer and Butcher offers a slice of Williamsburg-style hipsterdom in the heart of town, serving up homebrewed beers and a brand of Namibian-German fusion that is as delicious as it is unique.

Adrenaline-Soaked Swakopmund Day Tours

With a reputation as one of the premier destinations for extreme sports in all of Africa, the adventure activities are plentiful and can quicken the pulse of any enthusiast. These days, the airport is packed with travellers flocking here for an adrenaline fix.

Thanks to the fact that the town is located on the edge of Namib-Naukluft National Park, day trips from Swakopmund include hikes, camel rides, Swakopmund safari, desert trips and more.

Swakopmund Sandboarding

One of the most popular extreme sports opportunities is the chance to go dune boarding or sandboarding in the Namib desert at the famous Swakopmund dunes, just outside of town.

Swakopmund Namibia

Moreover, the enormous Swakopmund sand dunes soar over the horizon, providing the perfect spot for some serious carving. Operators throughout the city offer day trips to the dunes, providing boards, helmets and goggles so all that you need to focus on is enjoying the thrill that awaits. If you’ve never been sandboarding before, we highly recommend it. It’s probably one of the most fun activities in Swakopmund.

Swakopmund Desert Tours

One of the best desert tours in Swakopmund is a Sandwich Harbour 4×4 Tour that takes you to an incredible place where the giant sand dunes run straight into the ocean. Located just south of Walvis Bay, outside of Swakopmund, Sandwich Harbour is not a destination that can be explored on your own, even if you have a 4×4. The dunes here are so massive and the winds are so strong that expert level navigation and thus a guide, is mandatory!

Swakopmund Namibia

The tour includes a drive along the beach, some gentle hikes to the top of massive sand dunes and an exhilarating experience driving on sand dunes ! The Sandwich Harbour is not frequently visited by travelers from Swakopmund and is still considered a bit off the beaten path, but it was one of our favourite Swakopmund tourist attractions and is one we would definitely recommend adding to your list of things to do!

Swakopmund Quad Biking

If you want the thrill of the giant sand dunes, but don’t think you can enjoy the ride as a passenger, consider booking a Swakopmund Quad Biking tour. The adventure begins in Swakopmund where an experienced guide will set you up with a quad bike and lead you through the Swakopmund River mouth into the dune belt. These Swakopmund tours range from 45 mins to 6 hours, offering plenty of adventure for every thrill seeker.

If you would like to see the mystical sands of the Namib from an even greater height, skydiving is also a popular option for those seeking adventure and fun things to do in Swakopmund. Take a plane up 3000 meters before free-falling over the stunning landscape and parachuting gently back to earth.

The skydiving experience might be more expensive than other options around town, but the combination of thrills and stunning views on offer make this a true once in a lifetime experience.

Hot Air Ballooning

For those who prefer to take their desert adventures at a slower pace, there are certainly some more laid back things to do in Swakopmund as well. In fact, the town is home to a selection of companies offering hot air balloon expeditions over the rolling dunes of the Namib.

Most of these take place at sunrise when the desert is at its most spellbinding, ensuring that your hot air balloon experience is truly one to remember.

Swakopmund Surfing

Whilst the Namib desert quite rightly gets most of the attention when it comes to adventure sport in and around the city, the area is also a playground for watersports.

Surfing is a popular activity in the region with the cold but powerful swells of the Benguela current making for some incredible opportunities to surf uncrowded, consistent waves.

Close to town, the best spots include Dolfynstrand , Walvis Bay, Namibia and Jorg Henrichsen Park whilst north of town the famous break at Setters should only be attempted by the most hardcore of riders.

Coastline in Swakopmund, Namibia

For novice surfers looking to learn the ropes, Skeleton Bay offers tamer waves than its haunting name might suggest. Undoubtedly, surfing has become one of the top things to do in Swakopmund for visitors from across the globe.

Kitesurfing in Walvis Bay

In addition to developing a reputation among surfers, the beaches here are also fast gaining respect as a kitesurfing mecca. Walvis Bay is the closest option for kitesurfers in Swakopmund, with the high winds and choppy seas here making ideal conditions for some serious fun on the water.

Visit Spitzkoppe

Another extreme adventure awaits just a few miles northeast of town when the flat plains of the desert give way dramatically to the soaring peaks of Spitzkoppe, a granite outcrop reaching over 1,700 meters in height.

Spitzkoppe, Namibia

K nown to many as the Matterhorn of Africa, Spitzkoppe is a hub for climbing in the nation and its peaks attract professional and amateur climbers alike. An unmissable experience for any climbing enthusiast is camping overnight at the foot of Spitzkoppe, with expeditions available to book throughout the city. Book a tour out to Spitzkoppe in town or grab a Swakopmund car rental to drive there yourself.

Where to Stay in Swakopmund

Swakopmund accommodation options are plentiful, with lots of hotels, B&Bs and even Swakopmund camping options available in town.

Swakopmund Namibia

The best hotels in Swakopmund are usually found in the southern end of the city , near Palm Beach . If you are looking for cheaper places to stay in Swakopmund, consider the Northern part of the city, the area around Hage Heights , where you can find a room for under $50/night.

We did a lot of research when looking for the best Swakopmund hotels for our visit, so here are a few we recommend.

  • Strand Hotel Swakopmund is known as a local favourite and a popular destination resort in the city. Their rooms are spacious and the hotel offers direct access to the main beach in town.
  • The Dome Swakopmund (BON Hotel) is an ideal accommodation for those who don’t want to skip out on their workouts. Swakopmund’s top gym and sports centre, the facilities here are good enough to put even the most experienced exercise fanatic through their paces.

Sandwiched between Atlantic rollers and the Namib Desert, Swakopmund is one of those great traveller way stations along the African road. At once Namibia's adventure capital and a surreal colonial remnant, part destination in its own right and part launch pad for an exploration of the Skeleton Coast and Namib Desert, this is a city with as much personality as it has sea frontage. Like LĂŒderitz on the south coast, with its half-timbered German architecture, seaside promenades and pervasive GemĂŒtlichkeit (a distinctively German appreciation of comfort and hospitality), Swakopmund, especially out of season, can feel like a holiday town along Germany’s North Sea and Baltic coasts transplanted onto African soil. But the city is also thoroughly African and its multidimensional appeal means that most people end up staying longer than they planned.

  • Where To Go

Swakopmund: Namibia’s Favourite Holiday Town

From elegant art nouveau German architecture to sandy beaches, from interesting museums to excellent restaurants, you certainly will not run out of things to see and try in Swakopmund. Whether you find yourself amongst the high dunes of the Namib Desert, or on the waters of the Atlantic Ocean, Swakopmund offers something memorable for everyone.

Swakopmund was founded in 1892 by Captain Curt von François to be the main harbour for Germany’s newly acquired colony. The already existing nearby harbour at Walvis Bay belonged to the British and was therefore not as accessible to the Germans. Hence Swakopmund, only approximately 35 km north of Walvis Bay, was chosen for its availability of fresh water and relatively straightforward passageway to the inland, notably to Otjimbingwe and Windhoek. The town gradually grew, not only in size but also in importance both from an administrative and trade perspective. However, after the end of World War I, what is now Namibia was placed under South African administration and the barriers between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay were dissolved. This meant that the Swakopmund harbour became redundant, in favour of the better suited deep-sea harbour in Walvis Bay. So, Swakopmund started transforming itself, gradually becoming Namibia’s favourite holiday town.

Now Swakopmund offers a wide range of activities to all its visitors: exciting desert tours take you into the Namib and introduce you to different plants and animals which have adapted to survive these arid conditions. On quad bike tours you can ride up and down enormous dunes to get your adrenaline pumping. You could go sandboarding and even skiing down the dunes and for those in the mood for something more relaxed, camel rides in this beautiful desert landscape is also possible.

There are plenty of activities on the water too: catamaran tours will take you onto the Walvis Bay lagoon and show you some of the marine life nearby. Cheeky seals regularly jump onto the boats, hoping to score an easy, fishy meal. Dolphins, sun fish, leatherback turtles and whales can also be encountered on these boat trips. Maybe you would like to try some of the fresh local oysters whilst onboard, with a glass of sparkling wine or a couple of beers, as drinks and snacks are provided for during the excursion.

But Swakopmund offers more than just adventure activities. It has beautifully, brightly coloured buildings, many of which have an interesting story to tell.  You can go on a guided city tour of Swakopmund if you would like to learn more about the town and hear some of its many stories. The museums are fun too and give you a greater background not only to the town, but to the whole of Namibia. And then there are the cafes, bakeries, and restaurants. This is where the town’s German heritage can really shine and you can indulge in delicious German-style cakes. Due to the fact that Swakopmund is on the coast, its many restaurants often serve delicious fish and seafood dishes, all fresh from the ocean. Enjoying a delightful seafood platter, with a chilled glass of white wine and a view of the ocean after having spent the past few days deep in the desert is always a wonderful change of scenery.

As is usually the case with holiday towns, there is a wide variety of accommodation possibilities available. These range from Swakopmund camping options to large luxurious hotels. Our personal favourites, however, are the small intimate guesthouses and bed and breakfasts which are either located directly on the beach or alternatively, are only a short walk away. These welcoming accommodations are often owner-managed and will let you feel the charm of the town which the locals affectionally simply call ‘Swakop’.

You can explore Swakopmund either on a self-drive trip or a guided tour .

Swakopmund is always worth a visit. It offers more activities than you could possibly do on a single stay, so whether you are going to Namibia for the first time, or you are a returner, there is always a reason to visit this delightfully attractive and exciting little town.

You can hike up one of the highest dunes in the world and be rewarded with tremendous views once on top. If you start early enough, you could even witness a glorious sunrise over the Namib Desert.

Moonlandscape

Explore Namibia's most charming and incongruous coastal town

The high degree of German influence in Swakopmund is unique in Africa. It is undeniable and also fascinating. The historic buildings from the German colonial era make for an interesting city tour, with the Woermann House, the Old Magistrate’s Court and the Hohenzollern House all examples of this. Like the town’s architecture, much of the cuisine is still influenced by the town’s German heritage too, with many delicious cafĂ©s, restaurants, and bakeries for you to try.

History of Swakopmund

Swakopmund, a Namibian town, holds a deep-rooted history extending to the late 15th century. Its inception can be traced back to Portuguese navigator Bartholomew Diaz’s arrival at Cape Cross in 1487, where he raised a stone cross to mark his presence.

In 1793, two Dutch sailors briefly anchored at the Swakop River mouth, while it wasn’t until 1862 that a German gunboat’s crew hoisted their flag at the same spot, marking the coastal area’s occupation.

During the colonial era, Swakopmund played a pivotal role as a harbor despite its challenging conditions. Shallow coastal waters without a sheltered lagoon and treacherous surf made it difficult. Nearby Walvis Bay was already under British control, further emphasizing Swakopmund’s significance for German colonial endeavors.

To overcome the challenges faced by settlers and troops landing in rough surf, a costly artificial harbor was constructed. Regular freight traffic commenced in 1894, managed by a Hamburg-based shipping company. Initially, a 325-meter wooden jetty was built in 1902, later replaced by an iron one in 1912. The remnants of this historic jetty are visible today and have been repurposed, including the opening of an oyster bar in 2010 on the structure known as the ‘Jetty.’

This is the ultimate to explore the dunes, starting on Little Nellie move on to Birgit Run and end with a fast ride down Lizzie. Catch some speed as you reach up to 60km per hour. Lizzie may well become your new best friend or if you are really in it for some speed, meet Dizzy. With a little extra polish, you’ll cap 80km per hour easy. What a way to spend the morning in the desert. Let’s go.

Discover the Dunes:  Where They Meet the Sea

Swakopmund Activities inline image 5fad17b345bf1

Inside the Namib Naukluft National Park, roughly 60km from Walvis Bay , you’ll find Sandwich Harbour . Don’t be misled, although a harbour, you won’t be exploring it by boat. Your trip to get there (tide dependent), will take you along the beach where the dunes quite literally meet the ocean. Explore it by 4x4, with dunes to your left and the waves to your right .

A chance to see the Walvis Bay Lagoon and the flamboyance of flamingoes , then the salt pans before heading into the desert and along the coast. Up and over some dunes and then there it is: Sandwich Harbour. One of Southern Africa’s most unique wetlands in one of the most unique locations .

It’s phenomenal and, in our opinion, one of the very best ways to get a real ‘ Skeleton Coast ’ experience. If you want to know which activity is a ‘must’, this is it. Astonishing views from atop some of the largest sand dunes. Peer below, the rolling waves. It’s surreal. Add a picnic along the way and it’s hard to beat. No amount of words will do this one justice. Just take our word for it. You’ll see.

Half day - ZAR 2,300 p/p (approx. 4 hours – morning or afternoon) Full day - ZAR 2,600 p/p (approx. 8 hours) Combine this activity with a half day dolphin boat cruise or sea kayaking to make this the ultimate day out exploring sand and sea.

Explore the Living Desert

Top 10 Things To Do in Namibia inline image 5bfd0a16c6f4e

The desert, despite being arid and dry, and for the most part heaps and heaps of sand, is actually alive. Explore the life that survives in this harsh environment . The little creatures and critters are specially adapted and it’s fascinating. Watch a desert chameleon zap its meal almost quicker than the eye can see, side winding snakes move with ease across the hot desert sands, learn why the endemic Palmato Gecko is see-through. There’s so much more, but we won’t give it away. The wonder is seeing it up close. Understand how the dunes are formed and why the geology of this ecosystem is so unique. This is an educational scenic drive that will allow you to see the desert in a whole new light.

ZAR 850 p/p (approx. 3 hours)

Walk the Desert at Night

Swakopmund Activities inline image 5fad179127ca1

While the world sleeps, a whole world is alive in the dunes. Under a starry sky, you’d be surprised at the wonder of the desert. Take a walk in Swakopmund ’s backyard. The sand dunes come alive under UV light . It’s all about the specialised desert-adapted geckos, spiders, gerbils and scorpions. Explore the Namib’s gravel plains and watch as the theatre of the night comes to life.

Go See Some Seriously Old Plants in the World’s Oldest Desert

Swakopmund Activities inline image 5facdc7934cb6

A surreal experience that will leave you thinking you may well be on another planet. Aptly named, the Moon Landscape is an area of endless eroded hills and valleys forged by the Swakop River over eons. Amidst it all, you will find the famous Welwitschia Mirabilis . These are the seriously old plants we are talking about and they are old, about 2000 years old to be exact. The Namib Desert is not called the world’s oldest desert for no reason. These plants have survived this harsh environment in the sweltering desert sands for an impressive period of time. A hundred years would have been a feat. Heck, if you’ve been in the desert during the heat of the day, you’d have been amazed by a figure of ten years or even one and yet these plants have been around longer than most things. In one of the most inhospitable places on earth. I think you can see where we’re going with this and why you’d go venture out to see them. They are as phenomenal to see in real life as their name is a mouthful and the views along the way are well worthy too.

Welwitschia & Moonlandscape tour  - ZAR 950 p/p (approx. 4 hours) *Combine this with a lunch in the desert and make it a full day excursion

Trail the Desert on Horseback

Swakopmund Activities inline image 5facdc4846254

Anyone that enjoys horse riding will fall in love with riding in the desert and dry riverbe d. It’s quiet and peaceful and the scenery is spectacular. Explore the dunes, rocky plains and mountain vistas just outside of the town of Swakopmund. Take it slow, meander the trail or catch the desert breeze as you go for a gallop. This is one for the soul.

Ride a Camel on the Coast

Swakopmund Activities inline image 5fad174cf15b9

When you think of the desert, it’s not hard to picture a caravan of camels strolling along under the hot sun. Now picture yourself riding one in the dunes of Swakopmund. To your left endless heaps of sand and to your right in the distance, through the dry riverbed, the ocean.  It’s not a long activity but you will get a feel of the dunes and the desert. A new perspective as you ‘hump’ along. Riding a camel anywhere else but the desert, just doesn’t fit. So when in the desert – you ride a camel .

30 Minutes - ZAR 290 p/p   Please note this activity cannot be pre-booked.

Breathtaking Beauty by Bike

Swakopmund Activities inline image 5facddebb0c90

One of the most ecological ways to explore the dunes without doing it on foot, is to bike it.  Why not take in the wonder of the desert, while getting a bit of a sweat going? It’s a different way to get active and out into nature to explore the rolling dunes in total silence. Sand and a bicycle? Yes you can, these fat bikes are the 4x4 version. Enjoy the sensation of cycling up and down the endless dunes . This scenic tour will take you on a circuit of about 14km. If you’re up for the cycle. This one is for you. Something for the fit and energetic folk. Feel the burn. For those who may need a little help along the way and prefer a little less burn, opt for an E-bike. The effort is worth the thrill.

If the thought of cycling in thick sand is not for you, but you’d like to bike, then a tour of town by bicycle seems a fitting alternative. A way to see the ins and outs of Swakopmund. Explore the streets and take a trip down memory lane – all of Swakopmund’s historic monuments, buildings and landmarks. The best of the best – combine both the desert and a tour of town. Explore the hustle and bustle of the streets and then the quiet of the dune belt in Swakopmund’s back yard.

Scenic desert tour - ZAR 480 (approx. 2 hours) E-bike option - ZAR 540 “Old City” Swakopmund tour - ZAR 480 (approx. 2 hours) Desert and city combo tour - ZAR 730 (approx. 3 hours) E-bike option  - ZAR 800

Take a Township Tour

Swakopmund Activities inline image 5fad17e4bb66b

Discover the mix of culture in the local communities . The authentic Namibian people of the townships. Meet them, learn of their past and the ways they live. Visit the local street markets and try local foods . Explore schools, the development of the back streets and tavern shebeens. This is where the real ‘hustle and bustle’ of the streets come to life.

ZAR 750 p/p (approx. 3 hours)

Cruise the Bay

Swakopmund Activities inline image 5fad17771a11a

One of the most popular activities is to cruise the bay on a catamaran . Usually done in the mornings when there is less wind for smooth sailing. Check out the seal colonies at Pelican Point . Meet some of the seals on board. A chance to see dolphins and possibly even whales. Hello Mr. Pelican. You can meet him too. It’s a chance to explore the marine side of things. En route back to harbour, enjoy the sparkling wine and fresh oysters . It’s a fine day out at sea.

Dolphin boat cruise - ZAR 1,250 p/p (approx. 3 hours) Combine this activity with a half day Sandwich Harbour tour to make this the perfect day out exploring the ocean and the dunes.

Paddle at Pelican Point

Swakopmund Activities inline image 5fb2d4bc928b9

At the tip of the Pelican Point peninsula , you’ll find the seal colonies and one of the better ways to explore it all is from the water, just off shore in a kayak. The drive to get there takes you along the coastline to Pelican Point. Then suit up and get onto the water. Let the spirited seals play around your oar as you paddle along for about an hour . Back on shore, there’s something warm to drink before you head to Walvis Bay again. It’s not strenuous exercise as much as it is simply enjoying the scenery and the seals , possibly also dolphins , but it gets you out onto the ocean amidst the action.

Kayaking - ZAR 1,100 p/p (approx. 4 hours) Combine a morning on the water with an afternoon to Sandwich Harbour as a combo tour.

Catch a ‘Big One’

Swakopmund Activities inline image 5facd5cc9c5d8

We’re not referring to a wave here, although you can do that too (see below). Get a whole new angle of the coastline that makes up the Namib Desert. We’re talking here about angling. Namibia is renowned for its fishing and good fishing at that. It’s a past time for many locals and a great way to explore this unique stretch of the Skeleton Coast. From the shore, try your hand at reeling in kabeljou, black tail, steenbras or galjoen and then have a seafood braai right there on the beach . Nothing beats the ‘catch of the day’ straight from the waves, onto the fire. Shark fishing makes for the ultimate experience. You could even land ‘a big one’ weighing up to 180kg. The adrenaline lies in reeling it in. Catch and release of course. If you prefer to angle boat side , head out into the waters and dangle your line. There are plenty of fish in this ocean.

The fish you cannot catch is always a big one (Chinese Proverb). In Namibia, we tend to disagree or maybe the one that hasn’t been caught is even bigger. Is that even possible? Shore fishing: Half day - ZAR 2,100 p/p (approx. 4-5 hours – morning or afternoon) Full day  - ZAR 2,8000 p/p (approx. 8 hours) Boat fishing: Kabeljou  - Price on request (POR) Snoek - Price on request (POR) seasonal

Catch the other ‘Big One’

Swakopmund Activities inline image 5fad17d6bacfb

Ok, so now we are talking about a wave and while it may not necessarily be the biggest, it could well be one of the longest . The barrel at least has quite the reputation. It’s certainly not for beginners as it requires a large swell to get going and once you do, you’ll need to arrange a lift back to where you started. This is the wave they call Donkey Bay (also Skeleton Bay) and it’s without a doubt the most famous surf spot in Namibia . There are other surf spots too and some of these waves barely break 10 days a year, so if you want to know when the surf’s up, it’s best to do this with a local surf guide . They’ll know the best spots, when the waves are worth it and they’ll get you there (you’ll need a 4WD). Once on the wave, it’s all you.

Surf guiding – Swakopmund - ZAR 1,650 p/p (full day) or ZAR 750 p/p (half day) Surf guiding – Skeleton Bay - ZAR 1,500 p/p You could also take surf lessons, rent a board and a wetsuit (both which you’ll need) or go swimming with the seals . The above are group rates. One on one surf guiding rates will be more expensive.

The Sky’s the Limit

Swakopmund Activities inline image 5fad17c1e5b26

From up there, views are limitless . If you’ve ever wanted proof that the world is indeed round, here’s your chance. You can see so far, you might actually see the earths curved edge on the very distant horizon. The never-ending sand dunes of the Namib Desert look like silk in the sun, flowing from the aircrafts shadow beneath you to where they disappear into the ocean. A different perspective certainly gets you to see that ‘Namib’ doesn’t mean vast for nothing. From Swakopmund you can take various different charter flights over the Skeleton Coast . This is the perfect spot from which to explore it all from above, as the flight will take you full circle. Inland over the wide open spaces, head over the dunes to fly over Sossusvlei and Dead Vlei and then make your way over more dunes to where they meet the sea. Over the old diamond mines , shipwrecks and Langewand back to the coastal town. Go south or to the north, either way the country is spectacular. Seeing is believing on this one. Believe you me, it’s worth the cost, which says a lot since it’s not the cheapest. It’s with good reason this one is ‘a must’ feature on our Top 10 Things to Do in Namibia list.

Price on request (POR) Scenic flight prices vary depending on the number of people booked per flight and according to the flight route option of interest.

Fall from the sky

Swakopmund Activities inline image 5facdd0b27c07

With a parachute of course and strapped to a professional. Take to the skies, free fall and then soar to the ground . Talk about ‘coming down to earth’. This adrenaline, tandem skydive adventure is a must for the epinephrine enthusiasts. On your way up - you’ll get an aerial view over Swakopmund and the desert. On your way down - sheer exhilaration and some views, if you aren’t afraid of heights. Mind you, if you are, you probably won’t want to take on this feat in the first place. Never mind if this is not your thing, there are plenty other adrenaline activities that don’t require a launch point of 5,000ft plus in the clouds.

If this has been an activity you’ve always wanted to do, take our word for it, there are few places in the world that beat skydiving over the Namibian desert .

Tandem skydiving - ZAR 4,675 p/p

Glide over the Dunes

Swakopmund Activities inline image 5fad19999c587

Soaring above. Sand below. Paragliding is a unique activity for those who want to spend time in the dunes, climb to the top and then let the winds take you gliding. Hover and float your way down. A great option for those who aren’t in on the adrenaline of sandboarding and the heights of skydiving. It’s a great way to get active. Enjoy the peace of the desert , the views and that feeling of being weightless with the warm desert sand beneath you and the cool coastal winds in your hair.

Balloon on the Coast

Swakopmund Activities inline image 5fb4de294f115

If you thinking to include a hot air balloon safari, little will beat doing this in the Sossusvlei area , but if you aren’t visiting that area or your itinerary doesn’t allow it, then taking to the skies in a hot air balloon on the coast is equally unique . On a clear day, you could even see the Brandberg Mountain in the distance. Yip’ it’s that big and you’re up that high. It’s amazing plus it’s a slightly cheaper alternative to the offering in the desert. Now that’s one way to watch the sun come up over the ocean.

Hot air ballooning    ZAR 6,250 p/p Price above is based on 4 pax. Discounted rates may apply for bigger groups.

Kolmanskop – exploring an abandoned diamond-mining town.

Kolmanskop is a fascinating ghost town located near the port town of LĂŒderitz in Namibia. Once a thriving diamond-mining town in the early 20th century, it is now a deserted place with decaying buildings and empty streets, frozen in time. Exploring Kolmanskop offers a unique opportunity to delve into Namibia’s diamond-mining history and experience the eerie beauty of an abandoned town.

As you wander through the deserted streets of Kolmanskop, you will be captivated by the haunting atmosphere and the contrast between the crumbling buildings and the surrounding desert landscape. The town was once a bustling hub of activity, where diamond miners and their families lived. Today, the abandoned houses are slowly being swallowed by sand dunes , creating a surreal sight that is both melancholic and mesmerizing.

One of the highlights of visiting Kolmanskop is the opportunity to explore the interiors of the empty houses. Peering into the rooms, you can still see remnants of the town’s former glory – faded wallpaper, worn-out furniture, and even remnants of diamond-sorting equipment. It’s a fascinating glimpse into the daily lives of the people who once called this place home.

Table: Kolmanskop – Fast Facts

Visiting Kolmanskop is a truly unique experience, as you can witness the juxtaposition of human presence and nature’s relentless reclamation. Whether you’re a history buff, a photographer, or simply intrigued by the allure of abandoned places, Kolmanskop will leave an indelible mark on your memory.
