Gandikota Grand Canyon

"grand canyon of india", gandikota tourism.

Endearingly known as the ‘Grand Canyon of India’, Gandikota is a small and quaint village in the Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh. Flanked by River Pennar on the right side, the village is famous for the spectacular gorges formed by the river cutting through Erramala Hills. The narrow valleys with streams running between them and the steep rocky walls are reminiscent of the renowned Grand Canyon in Arizona. It requires a walk of almost a kilometre from the main gate to reach the boulder from where you can observe the mesmerising view from the viewpoint near the fort.

Located 1.5 hours away from Belum Caves, the highlight of the village of Gandikota is the ruins of Gandikota Fort, which was built in the 13th Century. The sturdy fort is flanked by the Pennar gorges on both sides and is protected by a majestic 5-mile wall. Built-in red sandstone, the fort boasts beautiful, intricate carvings in the interior. It also offers sweeping views of the hills and valleys below. In addition to a granary, jail and ruins of some temples, there are several structures within the fort that you can visit.

If you’re intrigued by ancient architecture, a fan of historical stories or a trekker looking for a new kind of climb Gandikota is the answer to all your woes. Gandikota is a village and historical fort on the right bank of the Penna river, 15 km from Jammalamadugu in Kadapa district, Andhra Pradesh, India. Apart from being the stronghold for various dynasties through the course of time. The fort stands as a testament to changing times.

But the fort is not all that we will witness here. The Gorge across the river from where it has earned its name “The Grand Canyon of India” is a spectacle one has to see to believe. Climbing rocks to the viewpoint will surely leave you satisfied and awestruck. Once we finish the tour of the fort you will understand why India has always believed in “Unity in Diversity”.

Once we finish the fort we quickly have our lunch, regain energy and hit the trail that leads to a waterfall. The waterfall is about 1.5kms from our campsite and has a beautiful view. What more you can see inscriptions of various deities and animals if you look closely. The area is littered with ancient artifacts at every twist and turn. After having a refreshing dip we start to another viewpoint that has a different view of it’s own.

We head back to camp, freshen up and have our dinner. Soon after which we enjoy a campfire under the stars and relive the day.

We wake up early the next morning and get ready to leave for Belum Caves. Belum Caves, is the largest and longest cave system open to the public in the Indian subcontinent. The government has built pathways, provided illumination and sank ventilation shafts to make the caves accessible. After the discovery of these caves back in 1983, it came to light that Buddhist and Jain monks were inhabited at this place. There is an underground stream that forms a natural waterfall at 150 feet deep from the ground level.

We’ll stop for lunch(self-sponsored) on the way and reach Lepakshi temple soon after which we’ll leave for Bengaluru.

Gandikota Canyon: The Ultimate Guide to India’s Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon in the USA is one of the top attractions in the world that attracts thousands of tourists every year. But did you know India has its Grand Canyon with an intriguing history and geography?

Known as the Grand Canyon of India, the Gandikota Canyon is a gorge carved by the Penna River in Andhra Pradesh. A gorge is a valley formed by the erosion of rocks due to the river flowing through the rocks over centuries, eventually cutting it and creating a path of its own.

This continuous water flow is why Gandikota has unique boulder formations, deep valleys and a landscape that looks like it’s from outer space.

I visited the Gandikota Canyon along with my friends as we drove from Bangalore. We also visited Belum Caves, the second-longest cave in India which looks similar to the Antelope Canyons in Arizona, USA.

In this guide, I would like to tell you about my overall experience of visiting the Gandikota Canyon (and Belum Caves) and share my itinerary with you so that you can plan your trip effectively.

2. Book your stay at Haritha Resort, Gandikota

Belum caves, what is the best time to visit gandikota, where is gandikota.

Gandikota is a small village in the Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh. The closest major city to Gandikota is Bangalore, at 280 km.

Historically, Gandikota was also the centre of power for many dynasties. It is why you’ll also see attractions like a couple of ancient temples, a mosque and a 12th-century fort that sits atop the hills.

There are plenty of other structures in ruins here, reminding you of Hampi in Karnataka.

We also visited Belum caves, 60 km away from Gandikota. Much like Borra Caves in Araku Valley , Belum Caves is also known for its stalactite and stalagmite formations and was formed by the constant flow of underground water from a river for over a thousand years.

How to book your stay at Gandikota?

One of the best things to do in Gandikota is to camp at the Gandikota cliff. This activity has become so popular that now you’ll see many private tour operators offering Gandikota camping packages.

Alternatively, you can also book your stay at Haritha Resort, a state-run resort which is the only proper accommodation you’ll find in Gandikota.

Let me tell you about both these stay options in detail.

1. Go for a camping package with a tour operator

gandikota grand canyon

This option is ideal for solo travellers, a group of friends or even a couple.

Typically, the itinerary for every Gandikota camping experience lasts for two days and one night and includes food, accommodation and transportation in the package.

Your accommodation will be at a campsite on the Gandikota cliff with a view of the gorge. At night, you’ll also be having a bonfire.

Some tour operators begin their journey from Bangalore, while others expect you to reach Gandikota on your own.

The following are some activities covered in the Gandikota camping package (varies from tour operator):

  • Rock climbing
  • Trek to Gandikota waterfalls
  • Visiting Gandikota Fort
  • Visiting Belum Caves

Thrillophilia  and  Freakouts  are two tour operators you can check out for camping at Gandikota as they have good ratings and reviews. You can also check out other tour operators online at your convenience.

Note:  Every tour operator doesn’t cover a visit to Belum Caves, which is one of the best places to visit near Gandikota. So keep this in mind while planning your trip.

Alternatively, there are some locals in Gandikota village who provide camping at the Gandikota cliff along with food. You can choose this option if you want to follow your own itinerary.

gandikota canyon

The second way to explore the Gandikota Canyon is to drive down from Bangalore, stay near Gandikota at a resort and drive to Belum caves. It is what we did as it gave us better flexibility in deciding our itinerary.

For our accommodation, we booked our stay at Haritha Resort, the only resort near Gandikota Canyon (1.2 km away). They provide AC rooms, dorms and even camping tents. You can visit the  APTDC website  for more details or you can call them to know more about the availability.

The drive from Bangalore to Gandikota is another reason you’ll enjoy this DIY trip. The entire journey is on a well-maintained highway, and you’ll enjoy the landscapes that keep changing regularly.

In the next section, I’ll be talking extensively about this experience so that you can plan your itinerary for Gandikota Canyon (and Belum Caves) from Bangalore and enjoy your trip.

Exploring Gandikota Canyon (and Belum Caves): A DIY itinerary

places to visit in gandikota

Before heading off to Gandikota, you must pre-book your hotel/camp at Gandikota. It ensures that you don’t have to scramble for accommodation at the last moment.

We booked our camp stay at Haritha Resort for two days and one night. You can also opt for their dorms and AC rooms.

We also rented a car from Zoomcar for our trip. It is a convenient and affordable option to have when you’re in a group of 3-4 people.

P.S.  You can also hire a bike if you’re a solo traveller or a group of two.

I won’t recommend travelling to Gandikota by public transport because the journey is long and you’ll want to stop in between to explore the landscapes. Alternatively, you can also book a cab from Bangalore but keep in mind that it will be expensive.

In summary, plan your stay and your mode of transport to have the smoothest trip to Gandikota.

With that said, let’s get our trip started.

Day 1

gandikota fort

After getting ready, we collected our rented car from one of the Zoomcar parking spots in Bangalore. Thereafter, we had breakfast at one of the cafes in Bangalore and by 10 am, we started our journey.

You’ll find traffic in Bangalore while leaving for Gandikota. But once you reach the outskirts of Bangalore, driving becomes a breeze because you’ll be passing through the NH 44 highway for most of your trip.

I have taken various road trips across different parts of India, but from my experience, the NH 44 highway remains one of my personal favourites. The NH 44 highway is the longest in India, and it stretches from Jammu and Kashmir to Kanyakumari.

The roads are broad on both sides, there are signboards at regular intervals, and most importantly, you can find several dhabas/restaurants on the roadside throughout your journey.

weather in gandikota

We stopped for lunch at one of these restaurants and took regular breaks in between to re-energise ourselves.

After crossing the Andhra Pradesh border, the landscape changes. You’ll pass through acres of barren land, rural villages and encounter deserted areas. These sights make the trip more memorable.

We reached Haritha Resort around 8-9 pm as we had faced some issues with our Zoomcar in the afternoon, but usually, the entire drive from Bangalore to Gandikota takes 7-8 hours, depending on your speed.

Note:  We had to break in the afternoon as we faced an issue with our Zoomcar. We waited two hours before Zoomcar replaced our car. It is a reminder that you should always ensure your car is in optimal condition before planning a long trip.

Our camp was on the ground in front of Haritha resort. This tent could accommodate four people.

gandikota waterfalls

Apart from the campsite, there are dorms and rooms in the resort. There is also a canteen from where you can order food and a place to have your food.

The resort is on ten acres of land, and hence, there is plenty of space inside the resort. There is greenery around the resort, and being the only resort in Gandikota, it is in an isolated location.

Overall, you’ll enjoy the ambience that this resort offers. The only drawback is that as it is a government resort, it is not always well-maintained. As we stayed only for a night, we didn’t face any difficulty.

After a tiring journey, we took a bath and retired for the night. As we had dinner on the way, we skipped dinner at the resort.

places to visit near gandikota

We woke up by 6 am, freshened up and had breakfast. For breakfast, you’ll get traditional South Indian food like idli, dosa, etc.

By 9 am, we checked out from Haritha Resort as we planned to go straight to Belum Caves after visiting Gandikota.

Gandikota is our first destination, and it was 1.2 km from Haritha Resort. We parked our car outside the Gandikota fort and started walking.

As you enter the fort, you’ll see ruins and architecture of various kinds like a granary, a step-well and a jail. The fort is spread across a vast area, and you might get lost if you explore it.

To make it easier for you, I’ve listed down the 5 essential places to visit in Gandikota:

1. Jamia Masjid

things to do in gandikota

Jamia Masjid is one of the main attractions inside the Gandikota fort.

It is a mosque with a multi-arched entrance on the outside and the main prayer hall inside it. The main prayer hall resembles the Charminar mosque in Hyderabad.

It is made entirely of red sandstone and has Islamic architecture.

It is adjacent to the Raghunathaswamy Temple, built years before this mosque.

2. Raghunathaswamy Temple

bangalore to gandikota

Made of red granite, the Raghunathaswamy temple is a complex system of pillars, halls and corridors that doesn’t have any idols of Gods. It looks similar to the temples you see in Hampi.

3. Madhavaraya Temple

gandikota to bangalore

This temple was built during the reign of Sri Krishnadevaraya of the Vijayanagara Kingdom and dedicates itself to Lord Vishnu.

The temple has sculptures of Hindu Gods and everyday rituals of people carved on its walls.

The temple has five floors, and you can see the tower from anywhere in Gandikota. We were able to see it from our resort as well.

4. Gandikota Canyon/Fort Viewpoint

haritha resort gandikota

The main attraction/USP of Gandikota is the view of the Penna River gorge a.k.a. the Gandikota Canyon from the Gandikota cliff.

You have to climb several rocks and boulders to reach the top. Once you reach the cliff, you’ll be amazed by the surreal landscape that you’ll see in front of you.

The Penna River gorge is 300 ft deep from the cliff. The river flows through the gorge flanked by hills made of rocks and boulders that appear as if someone assembled them manually.

On the opposite side, you’ll also notice the boundary of the Gandikota fort, which stretches along the banks of the Penna River gorge. You won’t realise how big the fort is until you view it from the top.

The best time to visit these viewpoints and Gandikota, in general, is during sunrise or sunset when the temperature is cooler, and the colours in the sky are more vibrant.

5. Gandikota Waterfalls

resort gandikota camping

Gandikota has a hidden waterfall that is unknown to many people.

From the cliff, you’ve to descend for 2 km via boulders and rocks till you reach the waterfalls. You’ll find white-painted spots from the camping area at the cliff guiding you to the waterfall.

There’s a small pond and a waterfall with clean waters where you can soak yourself as it’s not very deep. You can also get your pedicure done for free by the fish in the pond.

It is a great way to end your trip at Gandikota as you’ll feel fresher and ready to go to the next destination, i.e. Belum Caves.

gandikota resorts

After exploring Gandikota, we continued our journey to Belum Caves, the second-longest cave in India. The distance from Gandikota to Belum Caves is 60 km, and it can take up to two hours by road.

Once we reached Belum Caves, we had lunch at the restaurant there. You’ll get different kinds of rice varieties and some snacks here.

To visit Belum Caves, you need to purchase a ticket from the ticket counter. You can also hire a guide to help you understand the various structures inside the caves.

To enter the caves, you have to descend the stairs inside a well-like entrance and from there, you’ll be exploring a different world underground.

camping at gandikota

You’ll find irregular stalactite and stalagmite formations, spacious rock chambers and freshwater galleries inside the cave. The colourful lighting installed in the cave adds to the ambience and is similar to what you see in the Borra Caves of Araku Valley .

The overall look and feel of the cave will remind you of the Antelope Canyons in Arizona, USA.

Due to the irregular and weird rock formations, you’ll have to bend and crouch at certain places. Oxygen is less inside the cave and will get hot as you go deeper, but thankfully, it is well-ventilated.

It can take 1-2 hours to cover the entire cave. Only 1.25 km of the cave area is open to the public.

After exploring the cave, we made our way back to Bangalore as we reminisced about all the sights we witnessed at the Gandikota Canyon and Belum Caves.

Some essential tips for exploring Gandikota

Following are some tips that you may find essential while visiting the Gandikota Canyon and Belum Caves:

  • Wear proper shoes that have a good grip on the rocks.
  • Wear light, cotton clothes and shorts because the weather in Gandikota and Belum Caves remains hot throughout the year.
  • Carry a towel and swimwear if you plan to visit Gandikota waterfalls.
  • Carry a filled water bottle with you when visiting Gandikota/Belum Caves.
  • Try to reach Gandikota before sunset (on Day 1) because the surrounding area is completely isolated.
  • Keep low expectations if you stay at Haritha Resort as it is not well-maintained.
  • If you plan to stay at Haritha Resort, book your stay in advance as it is the only resort in Gandikota.
  • Always wear a hat outdoors to protect your head from the heat.
  • Carry a power bank as a backup for your phone.
  • You will not find shops in Gandikota, and hence, it’s always preferable to carry some snacks.

How to reach Gandikota?

gandikota camping

I highly recommend starting your journey from Bangalore by renting a car (via Zoomcar or other sources) and driving down to Gandikota.

It is the most convenient and fulfilling way to explore Gandikota because the drive from Bangalore to Gandikota is equally as good as the destinations you’ll be visiting.

If not, you always have the following options:

The nearest airport to Gandikota is Tirupati, followed by Bangalore airport. Tirupati airport is 222 km from Gandikota, whereas Bangalore airport is 257 km away.

Depending on where you’re coming from, you may get lesser flights to Tirupati compared to Bangalore, so keep this in mind.

The nearest railway station to Gandikota is at Jammalamadugu, at a distance of 18 km from Gandikota. At Jammalamadagu, you’ll get trains from major cities like Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai.

However, the caveat is that you need to change two trains if you’re coming from these places as there are no direct trains to Jammalamadugu. Only Vijayawada has direct connectivity with Jammalamadugu.

From Jammalamadugu, you can hire autos or take a bus to Gandikota.

If you’re coming from within Andhra Pradesh/Telangana, you can get buses to Jammalamadagu. You can book these tickets online at the  APSRTC website .

Alternatively, if you’re coming from Karnataka, you can book your bus ticket to Kadapa (86 km from Gandikota) from the  KSRTC website .

From Jammalamadagu and Kadapa, you can hire autos or take a bus to Gandikota.

Where to stay in Gandikota?

where is gandikota

There is only one resort in Gandikota, i.e. the Haritha Resort run by APTDC. Hence, if you plan to visit Gandikota, ensure that you pre-book your stay at Haritha Resort.

Alternatively, you can book your stay at Gandikota with one of the private tour operators like  Thrillophilia  and  Freakouts , which provide a complete Gandikota camping package that takes care of your food, accommodation and itinerary. If you want to follow your own itinerary but want to camp at the Gandikota cliff, you can book your tent stay and food with the locals in Gandikota that provide the same on the hilltop.

Weather in Gandikota

The weather in Gandikota is hot in general because Gandikota and Belum caves are in Kadapa, which is a dry area and remains hot and humid throughout the year.

Hence, avoid Gandikota during the summer months at any cost. The months from September-February are ideal for visiting Gandikota as the temperature is comparatively lower.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is camping allowed in gandikota.

Yes, camping is allowed in Gandikota. But it’s always preferable that you know the local language, in case, you have to negotiate with the guard. Keep in mind that there are no fixed toilets in Gandikota and you also have to arrange everything on your own.

Hence, it’s always best you sign up with tour operators like  Thrillophilia  and  Freakouts , who provide Gandikota camping packages that take care of your food, accommodation and itinerary.

As an alternative, you can also book your camp stay at Haritha Resort, 1.2 km away from the Gandikota Canyon.

Is there trekking in Gandikota?

You’ll be trekking in Gandikota to cover all the places inside the Gandikota fort. It is because they’re scattered all over the fort. However, the important places are concentrated in one location.

As an example, to reach the Gandikota Gorge Viewpoint from the entrance of the Gandikota fort, you’ve to cover 1 km on foot. Similarly, if you plan to take a dip in the Gandikota Waterfalls, you need to trek 1 km further down from the Gandikota Gorge Viewpoint.

How is the road from Bangalore to Gandikota?

The road from Bangalore to Gandikota follows the NH44 highway, the longest highway in the country.

As per my experience, it is also one of the best highways in India as the roads are broad, there are adequate signboards to guide you, and you’ll also find roadside restaurants/dhabas at regular intervals.

The landscape also changes as you travel from Bangalore to Gandikota as you observe windmills on the side, pass through villages and encounter acres of dry land. It adds to the experience of visiting Gandikota.

The weather in Gandikota and Belum Caves is dry and hot throughout the year. During summer, it becomes impossible to visit both these destinations in the scorching heat.

Hence, the months of September-February are the best time to visit these places as the temperatures are relatively lower. However, do note that the weather will still be hot and dry.

gandikota to belum caves

The Gandikota Canyon (and Belum Caves) remain one of my most memorable travel destinations in India due to their weird natural formations and the history they bring with them. They remind me of Hampi in Karnataka, another architectural marvel that remains off the tourist radar.

If you’re from Bangalore, you can easily plan a 2-day trip over the weekend by renting a car (e.g. Zoomcar) and covering Gandikota and Belum Caves. Like these destinations, you’ll also enjoy the road trip from Bangalore to Gandikota.

If you’re from another state, it’s always preferable to come to Bangalore and start your trip there.

Alternatively, you can sign up with the tour operators that provide Gandikota camping packages which take care of everything. They may also include additional activities like kayaking, rock climbing and rappelling.

Either way, I’m sure you’ll enjoy exploring both Gandikota and Belum Caves, marvelling at the weird structures and formations and understanding the history behind them.

With that said, I hope you found this Gandikota Canyon guide helpful, and I wish it helps you plan your trip effectively. Let me know in the comments if you have any doubts.

A 2 days Bangalore to Gandikota and Belum Caves trip

2 day road trip from Bangalore | Gandikota and Belum Caves

A trip to Gandikota and Belum Caves from Bangalore

Gandikota and Belum Caves were on our wishlist since long. So, finally happened this 2 day trip from Bangalore to Gandikota and Belum Caves. And I am so excited to share the details of this trip with you. Because it turned out to be one of the best road trips in India that we have taken. Since a long time we were keeping a close watch on Gandikota weather. which seems to be averaging between 30 C to 35 C max all through the year. Although travellers recommend that the best time to visit Gandikota is November to February. Since the heat is lowest. But, finally, when pondering where to go next , we decided to take this trip up in March first week, braving the extra few degrees of heat.

A 2 days Bangalore to Gandikota and Belum Caves trip

After having some fabulous road trips around getaways from Bangalore over the past few years including our first trip with Aashi to Hampi ,  Pondicherry , a beautiful drive to B R Hills , one of the fabulous road trips to Kodaikanal , and one to Ooty & Coonoor, we thought we have almost exhausted the list of weekend getaways from Bangalore. And then happened this Bangalore to Gandikota and Belum Caves trip. And what a trip it turned out to be. Initially we thought whether we should do a one day trip from Bangalore to Gandikota or a 2 day trip from Bangalore to Gandikota & Belum Caves, thereby staying in or near Gandikota for the night. But finally, we settled for the later. Given we were traveling with our kids. And the overall round trip distance including both Gandikota and Belum Caves was going to be more than 700 km.

Table of Contents

What to pack for a road trip to Gandikota

Apart from the essentials that we pick from our travel packing list , we packed the following for our trip to Gandikota

  • We double checked and made sure we had all essential medicines and first aid
  • Some handy printable games and puzzles for the road trip because we were traveling with the kids and wanted to keep them entertained.
  • Lots of homemade snacks and lunch
  • Tissues and wet wipes
  • Lots of water as it was really hot
  • A couple of pillows for kids to nap while on the way
  • Some of the favourite toys for the kids to play along the way
  • An extra power bank because the roads in this part are mostly deserted and we were totally going to rely on google to show us the way
  • An extra torch as well for the same reason as above

Apart from these, we did pack some of our regular travel essentials that come handy when we travel with our kids , our digital camera , our travel accessories and electronics that we carry anywhere we go and our travel medicine kit .

Where to stay in Gandikota

The next questions was where to stay on our 2 day trip from Bangalore to Gandikota & Belum Caves. One option was the APTDC run Haritha Resort, which is just next to the Gandikota Fort. But it was already booked when we decided on our trip. So, we decided to go for the next nearest resort – The Royal County, Proddatur. Which was at a driving distance of around 35 km from Gandikota fort. But looked like a decent option. So, we booked our rooms here for an overnight stay. How we wish we could travel in a RV to Gandikota! What an adventure trip it would turn out to be. And there would be no accommodation woes.

A 2 day trip from Bangalore to Gandikota and Belum Caves. Weekend getaway from Bangalore

Itinerary of our 2 days trip from Bangalore to Gandikota & Belum Caves

Thereafter we brainstormed a bit on the itinerary to follow. And finally settled on this particular itinerary after thinking of various combinations:

  • Start early from Bangalore to Belum Caves. The distance from Bangalore to Belum Caves is nearly 300km. And from our home, it was about 320km. So, we decided to start early from Bangalore. And our target was to reach Belum Caves by 11:30am.
  • Explore Belum Caves in around an hour
  • Drive from Belum Caves to Gandikota and reach Gandikota by 2:30pm. Belum Caves to Gandikota drive takes another 1.5 hours.
  • Start from Gandikota and reach back our resort before dark.
  • Since the checkout from resort was at 12:00pm, we now will have ample time to relax till next day. And then start back for Bangalore by 11:00am the next day.

So, this is the itinerary we settled for : Bangalore -> Belum Caves -> Gandikota -> Royal County Resort (overnight stay) -> Bangalore

Where to eat on the way from Bangalore to Gandikota & Belum Caves

On the main Bangalore Hyderabad Highway (Initial 120-130km) there are decent food options till one crosses Nandi Hills. But since we were starting early in the morning. So, most likely we were crossing this stretch much before breakfast time. So, we packed our food from home for both breakfast and lunch. And also packed ample water supply with us. However, if you decide to start late, you can stop on one of the several food joints and restaurants on the NH 44 Bangalore – Hyderabad highway.

Actually, packing the food from home added to the fun. The kids felt the picnic vibe. Along with the food, we also packed some healthy snacks for our kids for their mid – day snacks. Here’s a list for you to refer:

Healthy snacks for kids to pack on road trips

From Bangalore to Belum Caves

A 2 days Bangalore to Gandikota and Belum Caves trip

Finally, we packed our bags and started on a drive from Bangalore to Belum Caves. Around 8:00am we had already crossed Nandi Hills, and even Lepakshi . And as per google maps, we were soon to take a turn from the main Bangalore – Hyderabad highway to NH 544 D. So, we decided to stop for breakfast. And we got this lovely scenic spot for the same (Pic above). This looked like a stretch of land besides the highway that is often used by the truck and lorrey drivers as a resting ground by the night. As, we saw a lot of burnt tree branches. So, looked like they stop here to rest and cook their meals. Nevertheless , the scene was beautiful around here. With the backdrops of the hills. And the sun peeping through the clouds.

After breakfast we started on our journey further to NH 544 D. On the way, we stopped once again around 9:30am for coffee. And our next stop was a beautiful site on the banks of Singanamala Cheruvu. It was very scenic with the pond on one side. And a hill with windmills above it on the other side. While beautiful green fields stretched on the third side. We sat here for sometime. While our kids finished their little midday snack.

gandikota tour package

And then we started further towards Tadipatri. Finally we took a right turn on NH 67. And continued till Belum Caves. On the way, we were greeted by clouds, and drizzling as well. Which brought down the overall temperature of the region!!

Belum Caves

As you approach Belum Caves while driving from Bangalore, at the last stretch you see several sign boards indicating the distance left to travel. The last 10 kilometers stretch of road is double lane only with heavy vehicles frequenting the route. So, that reduces the speed. But, finally we reached Belum Caves as targeted. And entered inside the campus, finding a spot for our car under the shade of a tree.

A 2 days Bangalore to Gandikota and Belum Caves trip

Before starting to explore the Belum Caves, we had our lunch here. And then we took tickets for the cave. The entry tickets are INR 65 per adult and INR 45 per kid at the time of this writing.

The Belum Caves are the second largest and longest caves in Indian subcontinent which are accessible to the public. Although the total length of Belum Caves is around 3.5km. Almost 1.5km of it accessible. Long back, the river Chitravathi flowed through this area, forming the caves over thousands of years. These caves have stalagmite formations, some natural water fountains, and a variety of rock formations inside. A flight of steps are made now, to provide easy entry to public inside the caves.

gandikota tour package

Once inside the caves, the light is low. So, several light sources have been erected. Oxygen levels are also low inside Belum Caves. So, several exhaust fans and air circulation mechanism are setup. Still kids and elderly can feel the lack of oxygen and heavy breathing. So, we were watchful, specially of our younger kid who is just over an year old. And we decided not to explore the whole stretch of the cave. As, it will take longer. And also the deeper we go, the more the lack of oxygen. Instead, we explored till half way through and then returned back to the entrance.

A 2 days Bangalore to Gandikota and Belum Caves trip

There is historical importance of Belum Caves as well. It is believed that Buddhist and Jain monks occupied these caves in the past. And that is the reason, now you see a newly erected huge Buddha Statue just as you enter the campus for the Belum Caves. Also, the relics of Buddhist found from inside the Belum Caves are now put in Anathapur Museum. You can see a meditation center and other such places of residence and activity inside the caves.

From Belum Caves to Gandikota

After exploring the Belum Caves, we started for Gandikota around 1:30pm. The distance from Belum Caves to Gandikota is around 61.5km. And it takes around 1.5 hours to reach Gandikota. Most of the stretch of road is good. But there are a lot of invisible speed breakers setup before as well as after each cluster of houses that you find every 10km or so alongside the highway. So, you have to be really watchful of them. Otherwise, either you break at the last moment or suffer sudden jolt. Hope these are painted a different shade than the road in near future for our good!

gandikota tour package

And a special mention to the last 10km stretch to the Gandikota Fort. As you take a diversion from the main highway. And then go up and down a few hills before reaching the fort. The slopes are steep and the road really serpentine. But it’s a pure delight to drive through. In fact, the road was newly tarred during our Bangalore to Gandikota trip!

Gandikota Fort

Soon we saw the massive boundary wall of the Gandikota Fort. And then we approached near it. We drove right through the main gate of the fort (Which is actually on the side). And then through another gate, and yet another (Reminded me of the 7 robust gates of Chittorgarh Fort ). Then we came to the “Char Minar” structure. And parked our car here. Although some people drove further. But the road seemed narrow with just a single lane. Dotted with village houses on both side, with their kids and hens running around. So, we decided to cover this distance on foot. And in another 300 meters we reached the structure of the Fort.

A 2 days Bangalore to Gandikota and Belum Caves trip

There is a mosque, and a few other structures. But most of them are in ruins by now. The scene definitely reminded me of Khaba Fort and the haunted village of Kuldhara . Hope the structure is preserved. Sadly it seems to be totally neglected by the Andhra Government and the tourism authority of India. There is a lot of vandalism

The Penna River Gorge – The Grand Canyon of India

As we crossed the ruins of the Gandikota Fort, we reached one of the most wonderful landscapes of India – The Penna River Gorge. It is a naturally formed narrow valley with steep, rocky walls located between hills on either side. Blue Penna River water flows through this narrow gorge..deep inside, providing a mesmerizing scene between the yellow rocks. No wonder it is called the Grand Canyon of India. We climbed and trekked through the rocks to reach the hill top from where we saw stunning scenes of the Gandikota Gorge. We sat here on the rocks for sometime, enjoying the cool breeze and letting our sweat dry 😀 . While we were there, few groups of people came and left. The whole area is so big, you hardly notice anyone else. And you get to enjoy the uninterrupted views exclusively.

Gandikota Fort to Royal County Proddatur

Finally, we started for our resort around 4:30pm (Yes, before time!) . The distance from Gandikota Fort to Royal county Proddatur is 36.5 km. And it takes almost 40 minutes to reach there. Upon reaching the resort and checking in, we all got fresh. And then ordered dinner. Post which we had a good sleep overnight. The next day morning we woke up leisurely. And after breakfast, we enjoyed the resort property a bit. (They have really expansive grounds to take a walk, or play outdoor sports and they have a gym, library and other such facilities. However, we won’t recommend staying more than a night as they lag some basic facilities in the room, which we have detailed on tripadvisor. ).

Back to Bangalore from Gandikota

We started on our journey back to Bangalore around 11:00am. This time, the route was different from the one we followed on the onwards journey. But even more scenic. We crossed several beautiful hills, once again taking serpentine curves and even a hair pin bend. Along with vast stretches of green fields, patches of which had different crops blooming. Some banana groves, grape plantations, corn fields and beautiful marigold cultivation areas. And finally, we stopped on this beautiful bridge midway:

2 day Bangalore to Gandikota and Belum caves trip

Finally we touched the NH 44 around 3:30pm. By 6:00pm we reached back home in spite of taking several pit stops. And stopping for a late lunch around 4:00pm at NH 44 just before Nandi Hills. Overall, the Bangalore to Gandikota drive and back was beautiful, that has left us craving for our next road trip 😀 And we highly recommend this trip to Belum Caves, Gandikota and palces around Gandikota.

Bangalore – Lepakshi – Belum Caves – Gandikota

Although we have already visited Lepakshi  and it’s mysterious temple years back, it is one place we highly recommend to everyone. And it lies right on the way from Bangalore to Gandikota and Belum Caves. So, if you are yet to visit Lepakshi, you should definitely include it in your list when planning this trip. What you can do is reach Lepakshi Temple by 6:00am and plan to spend an hour to 1.5 hrs here. You can still conveniently cover Belum Caves and Gandikota by 6:00pm. And if you get a room in Haritha Resort, even better. Because you will save another one hour driving to another resort. So, you can watch the beautiful sunset at Gandikota Fort before heading back to your room.

Tips on doing a 2 day trip from Bangalore to Gandikota & Belum Caves

  • Start early so that you can cover both Belum Caves & Gandikota Fort, and if interested, Lepakshi Temple as well on the same day.
  • Stay overnight near Gandikota Fort. Although people do this as a single day trip. But that will mean you will be driving almost 700+ km in the round trip. And you will be really late and tired reaching back to Bangalore. Moreover, you will not be able to enjoy the scenery on your way back.
  • Pack your food – breakfast, lunch as well as something for the next day’s lunch. We had a really late lunch the next day. Because there was no decent option until we reached very near Bangalore
  • Wear light and comfortable cotton cloths, pack your sunglasses, hat, sunscreen lotion and lots of water. The weather is hot and humid all through the year. And you will be sweating a lot.
  • Also wear shoes which are apt for trekking. As the bounders near the gorge are slippery and you need to trek through them to the top.
  • Beware of multiple humps on the roads (Except for the main NH 44 they are all over!)
  • If you are driving from Bangalore to Gandikota, get your car serviced and tank filled with fuel. As once you leave the main highway, there are very long stretches of road when there is nothing on either side except for vast stretches of fields or hills on both sides. There are hardly any other vehicles that you will spot on this road.
  • Keep an emergency light – a handheld torch or something as there can be power cuts in these areas. Also keep your travel medicine kit with you.
  • Last but not the least, beware that the villagers can sometimes get crazy. On our return trip from Gandikota we narrowly escaped two groups at two different places who were trying to extract money from the passing vehicles in the name of upcoming festival!!!

Came across your blog page today. Nicely explained. You could also cover Ahobilam while in Gandikota, and, Horsley hills while returning to Bangalore if you take Kadapa, Madanpalle route.

Thanks for the information Shivananda. We didn’t cover Horsley hills because we have been there on a road trip before. But, I can definitely add it as a suggestion to the readers. Didn’t know about Ahobilam back then. But again, readers will definitely benefit from it’s mention. Thank you so much!!

Such a nice explanation. One of the best blogs for Gandikota and surrounding places.

Thank you so much!! Your appreciation means a lot

Thank you writing so beautifully.Very detailed explanation. Thank you.

Thank you for a detailed and informative travel log. Do you have any idea about how the Harita hotel at Gandikota is? There are mixed reviews, so was wondering.

Thanks Ranjit. We don’t have any first hand info on Harita Hotel as we didn’t stay there. At a glance, it looked good and it’s location is really an advantage. Staying here means you can stay as long as you want at the Gandikota fort, even watch the sunset and then just walk to your hotel. It is not hi-fi accommodation but if you keep your expectations to basics, it should be fine for a one night stay

This post brought back so many good memories. The trip to Belum Caves and Gandikota is one of our favorite road trips from when we used to live in Bangalore. I hope these places remain hidden from the rest of the world as they are now. I liked your idea of packing food for the trip and the stops you chose to have them.

Thanks Pubali! Although I must say, Gandikota has gained a lot of popularity in past couple of years. It is still devoid of traffic but I see things changing in the next couple of years

This sounds like such a cool road trip. However, I’m travelling by public transportation – would that be possible, too? Wonderful and inspiring pictures, too!

Yes you can take a bus on the highway and then hire a local auto once near Gandikota. Organized trips are also available that take groups on tour here. We saw some of the groups arrive and leave as we explored. but believe me, nothing beats the charm of a road trip on this kind of place.

I’ve never head of this, but the landscapes remind me of home! What a great way to spend a few days exploring.

Thank you Jenn. It is a very offbeat place in India, so, definitely not many have heard about it. And that is what this post is about – to get more and more people acquainted with this hidden gem of a place!

I have never heard of these places but the roads going to them look very good and the entrance to Belum Caves looks very intriguing.

Yes, it is a very small and offbeat place. But that is the beauty of the place Carol.

I’ve never heard of these travel destinations, but after reading this, they are definitely going on my bucket list! Thanks so much for the insight, the tips, and most important, for the inspiration!

Thank you Michelle. I can be your guide when you plan to travel here 🙂

How to buy Taylor Swift tickets: Eras Tour dates and prices compared

When you buy through our links, Business Insider may earn an affiliate commission. Learn more

Taylor Swift's reign continues as she ramps up for the next leg of The Eras Tour. The singer-songwriter will kick off the European portion of her world tour in Paris in May, which will continue throughout the summer. From there, she'll return to North America to tour Canada and a few remaining US cities in the fall. If you're hoping to attend, we've compiled all of the details of The Eras Tour, including how to get Taylor Swift tour tickets.

Swift's Eras Tour has taken the world by storm since March 2023. The three-plus-hour tour features hits from each of Swift's album eras, from "Lover" to her recent Grammy Award-winning "Midnights." Each show also features surprise songs and occasional guests, so fans never quite know what they're in for. Swift will release her latest album, "The Tortured Poets Department," in April, but it's unknown if any of those songs will make their way to the tour setlist.

  • See also: Adele tickets | Olivia Rodrigo tickets | Bad Bunny tickets | Bruce Springsteen tickets  | Drake tickets | Stevie Nicks tickets

Getting tickets has become its own battle and many fans have waited hours in the Ticketmaster queue to hopefully snag some seats, if they could get a presale ticket code in the first place. While Swift continues to extend the tour, including new US dates, tickets remain hard to come by.

Below, we've put together a guide on everything to know about The Eras Tour, including the tour schedule, ticket purchasing details, resale ticket prices, and the concert film streaming options . You can also peruse resale vendors like StubHub and Vivid Seats at your leisure.

Taylor Swift international tour dates

The Eras Tour international dates resume on May 9 in Paris. The European tour will run until August 20 in London. UK prices are listed in pounds, and start times vary from city to city. US dates start in October and can be found under the following table.

Taylor Swift North American tour dates

The Eras tour will return to the US on October 18 in Miami. In addition to the Miami shows, Swift will perform multiple dates in New Orleans and Indianapolis. On November 14, Swift will head to Canada for several shows in Toronto and Vancouver. All North American shows start at 7 p.m. local time.

How to buy tickets for Taylor Swift's 2024 tour

Original standard tickets for Taylor Swift's 2024 sold out long ago for both international and domestic dates. All US tickets and many international tickets were sold through Ticketmaster , although select international locations used different services.

Tickets for most dates are available on resale websites like StubHub and Vivid Seats . These are generally higher-priced than the originals, which are no longer available. Keep in mind that some countries have rules regarding reselling tickets.

How much are Taylor Swift tickets?

Ticket prices vary by date and location. International resale tickets tend to be a bit cheaper than US resale tickets. It's worth noting that some of the cheapest tickets have restricted views.

StubHub's cheapest European tickets range from $392 (Madrid, Spain, on May 29) to £978 (London, United Kingdom, on June 22). The latter is around $1,248 in USD. The lowest prices for most shows are around $450 to $1,000. On Vivid Seats , the cheapest tickets for these dates go for $549 and $683, respectively.

When it comes to North American shows, the cheapest StubHub tickets range from $1,045 (Vancouver, Canada, on December 8) to $2,081 (Miami, Florida, on October 19). Most of the cheapest tickets are priced between $1,200 and $1,800. On Vivid Seats, the cheapest Taylor Swift tickets on these dates start at $1,133 and $2,212, respectively. The two resale vendors generally have similarly priced offerings, but this varies from show to show.

Who is opening for Taylor Swift's tour?

Taylor Swift has a variety of opening acts, from up-and-coming singers to established groups. Opening acts vary by date. For the European leg of the tour, Paramore will open for Swift. In the US and Canada, Gracie Abrams will be the opening act.

Will Taylor Swift add more dates to the Eras Tour?

Taylor Swift already added additional stops to her tour due to popular demand, including her US tour dates this fall. She also added additional dates to some of her European city stops, including bonus performances in France and the United Kingdom, among other locations. It's unknown whether Swift will end up adding even more tour dates, but by the end of the upcoming US leg she will have been touring for almost two years, so fans shouldn't be surprised if she takes a break.

Gandhikota Solo Backpacking

Photo of Madhuri Prabhu

And I stumbled upon the Grand Canyon of India

Photo of Gandhikota Solo Backpacking  1/1 by Madhuri Prabhu

“Though hesitant I completed my wish list desire of solo trip!”

I’m a travel geek and currently, my wish list is overflowing with the places I want to visit. I travel, explore and return with nothing but beautiful memories and stories to share with all. Amongst the never-ending destination list, the Gandikota trip was pending since the past 3 years.

The plan was chalked out with my friend and the backpacking was done as per the requirements. One fine morning I receive a call from my friend saying that he won’t be joining me on this short trip because of some important family issue. I was taken aback by the news for a few minutes. But my inner self was pushing me towards completing this trip as a solo traveller. Though hesitant I decided to take the plunge and complete my short solo trip.

I wrapped up my work for the day and rushed home to pick up my backpack. Within an hour I caught the evening local train to reach Dadar railway station. The train’s departure time was 8.30 pm and I had to reach the station by 8 pm. Keeping the lesser halt time at Dadar in mind I started my journey soon, also, I had to search for my coach. Everything went as planned, I reached before the arrival time, boarded the Chennai Express and embarked on my solo journey towards Gandikota.

Post 2 hours I shifted myself to the upper birth and relaxed by lying down and soon I fell asleep. As the night passed the weather started changing and I could feel it while I was asleep. It was 7 am and suddenly I felt extremely cold. I got up and started looking around for someone trustworthy who can take care of my backpack. I saw a girl sitting on the opposite berth and wasting no time I asked her if she could take care of my belongings. She agreed and asked me to do the same for her.

Travel Friend Renu

Photo of Dadar, Mumbai, Maharashtra, India by Madhuri Prabhu

I immediately got down and went to freshen up and have breakfast. After having a wholesome breakfast I and Renu sat beside the window and started conversing. We didn’t realise how time passed with our conversations and by afternoon it was time for me to bid adieu to my friend Renu. Before I could alight down from the train Renu asked for a selfie with me and I could not deny it.

I reached Tadipatri railway station at around 12.27 pm and was excited at the same time. To reach Gandikota I had to commence on a break journey of approximately 83.4 km (2h 3 mins). The destination was far but my excitement to reach Gandikota held back all the travelling hassles. I got out of the station and within 15 minutes reached Tadipatri bus depot via rickshaw. I caught the 12.39 pm state transport bus towards Jammalamagudu and sat beside the window seat enjoying the spectacular lush green nature. Nostalgic set in as the bus passed through the open green fields and it reminded me of my native town.

I reached Jammalamagudu at around 2.45 pm and started enquiring with the locals about the next bus to Gandikota. To my dismay, the next bus was to arrive at 6 pm. It was already mid-afternoon and I could hear my stomach growling for food. I decided to check-in into the nearby restaurant and ordered a full meal thali. I thought it would be an ordinary thali but to my surprise, it was a huge traditional South Indian thali. Big enough to satiate my hunger pangs and keep my tummy full till the end of next journey. Also, the food was delicious!

Although the locals of Andhra Pradesh don’t understand English or Hindi to the fullest they also don’t misguide you when passing out directions. They help you in every possible way. I could not wait for the evening bus as I had to reach Gandikota to complete my impending tasks. The next I did was to take the immediate rickshaw towards Gandikota. You got to acquire the bargaining skills here for a long-distance rickshaw ride. Why? Because they charge you exorbitantly if you are an outsider. After bargaining for 15-20 minutes for Rs. 200 – 300 one rickshaw guy agreed to take me to Gandikota for Rs. 200.

At around 4.30 pm I reached the hotel and called up the guy who was supposed to provide me with a tent for camping. The guy said that he will provide me with the tent by 6.30 pm and until then he asked me to freshen up, have some tea or coffee and explore the Gandikota fort. I freshened up and left the hotel to explore the nearby areas as I didn’t want to explore the fort today. Confused yet dazed I started walking towards the fort and surprisingly I reached the Grand Canyon of India.

The very next moment I was dumbfounded by the magnificent view of the sunset at the canyon. It was nothing less than a dramatic view of a reddish-orange ball on fire immersing itself in the sea. I consider myself lucky to have captured this moment unknowingly. If I would have waited at the hotel I would have missed this breath-taking view. A few minutes later I walked back towards my camping location near the Pennar river.

Gandikota Fort

I was expecting multiple tents and people on the camping site but I was the whole and sole person on the entire site. Usually, people are camping on the site on Saturdays and Sundays as these are non-working days. Finding myself alone in the middle of the camping site I asked the tent guy about my safety. He assured me that its 100% safe and I need not worry about anything.

As the night set in silence shrouded the area with insects chirping around. The night was serene with stars twinkling in the sky. I entered my tent, changed my clothes and ate 2 bananas because I wasn’t going to have dinner. I laid down and started watching The Lion King movie on my mobile. After a few minutes I was sleepy, so I set alarm for the next day and went to sleep.

In the middle of the night, I was woken up by not so friendly dog fights. Thinking that they would run away after a few minutes I went to sleep again. To my horror their fights became ugly and they fell on my tent sending shivers down my spine. I was lucky to have not been bitten by them because my tent was firm and sealed from all corners. After making loud noises from the tent they ran away and I finally slept peacefully.

My peaceful Time

I was woken up by the 6.30 alarm and I stepped out of my tent to witness the morning beauty of Gandikota. Unlike the city’s air here it was fresh, cold and beautiful. Away from city life, this is what I have wanted all my life. Now, it was time for me to bid adieu to the beautiful and amazing camping site. I entered my tent, freshened up and handed over the tent to the guy and left to explore other sites by 7.20 am. The tent guy was humble, genuine and helpful. I did thank him for providing me with the tent at the perfect spot.

With 2 hours in hand and few unexplored places, I decided to rush towards Gandikota Fort and explored its adjacent areas of Ranganatha Swamy Temple, Madhavaraya Temple, and Jamia Masjid.

After the exploration of this vast and wonderful land I had a fulfilling breakfast and set out on a break journey again towards Belum caves. I caught the 10 am bus to reach Jammalamagudu and from there I caught another bus to reach Kolimigundala. After getting down at Kolimigundala I took a shared auto to reach Belum caves.

Did you know Belum caves are one of the longest caves and the largest caves in the Indian subcontinent? No right? History says it that these caves have been formed ten and thousands of years ago by the constant flow of underground water.

While exploring the magnificent and magnanimous Belum caves I bumped into a long-lost office colleague of mine named Kotti. Kotti was here with his friends on a weekend trip and soon we decided to explore the caves together. Then we had lunch together and he dropped me on the bus depot.

I immediately caught the available bus and reached Tadipatri railway station 3 hrs early To my dismay, the 7.15 pm train was late by 20 min. Finally, the train arrived and I reached Dadar station at around 1.30 pm. From there I caught the next available local train and reached Borivali station to reach home.

My trip was short but the memories will remain intact forever as it was my first solo trip. Once in a life, one must go on a solo trip to discover oneself and the beauty of Gandikota and the Grand Canyon of India.

Not all know about Gandikota and its beauty! Nestled in the interior of Andhra Pradesh is the Grand Canyon of India. The Pennar river flows between the giant rock slabs at the foothills. All my life I thought there only one Grand Canyon in Arizona but the myth was busted when I discovered that India too has its own Grand Canyon.
