Sustainable Greece Hub Launched in London
The Greek National Tourism Organisation (GNTO) has unveiled a new sustainability hub, shining a light on the incredible sustainability initiatives across the country.
The destination is making changes to become as sustainable as possible and by highlighting some of the amazing initiatives, hopes to inform travellers on the many ways to visit Greece responsibility, as well as inspire other tourism providers.
From islands now powered by renewable energy and plastic free, UNESCO protection for ancient sites and cultural practices, roads ruled by electric vehicles and bikes and destinations made more accessible for disabled travellers, to 3D printing using ocean waste, bags created from sails and invasive fish served in restaurants – modern-day Greek heroes are transforming the country and its tourism sector.
Here is just a snapshot of some of the initiatives underway:
- The island of Astypalaia has shifted to electric vehicles, replacing 1,500 engine vehicles with 1,000 electric ones, including a new “ASTYBUS” electric bus network. Visitors can also use a new electric-vehicle sharing service astyGO, renting electric cars, e-scooters and e-bikes from an app.
- Tilos will become the first island in the Mediterranean to be 100% energy self-sufficient, using solar and wind for energy. Landfill is no longer an issue, with more than 80% of Tilos’ rubbish now recycled.
- Paros is set to become the first single-use plastic, waste-free island in the Med , through its pioneering initiative Clean Blue Paros with Common Seas.
- A “Pick the Alien” initiative from iSea has been introduced by The Cyclades Preservation Fund and the Ionian Environmental Foundation in Paxoi, Corfu, Santorini, Naxos, Amorgos, which encourages local seafood markets, restaurants and shops to sell and consume invasive fish.
- Rhodes is carving out a new future for sustainable tourism in collaboration with TUI, to launch “The Rhodes Co-Lab”, the first project of its kind in the world, created to explore how a tourism destination can develop sustainability, both in terms of preserving the environment but also socially and economically, creating jobs and involving the local community.
Greece’s islands, cities and sites are trialling new initiatives and innovations and hope to become a blueprint for other destinations to follow. In light of this, the hub will aim to inspire not only travellers, but also other Greek destinations looking to transform their tourism sector.
A useful new tool for the travel trade, the hub will shed light on a wide array of Greek tourism destinations, some of which are still relatively undiscovered in the UK market, as well as providing inspiration for new itineraries, particularly those focused on responsible travel.
Ms Sofia Zacharaki, Greek Deputy Minister who was present at the event commented, “Greece is home to some of the world’s most beautiful natural landscapes, deep-rooted ancient cultures and precious indigenous species, and it is our responsibility to make sure these are protected, whilst at the same time allowing locals and visitors to enjoy them. It is a big challenge, but one we are willing to tackle head on. It is so inspiring to see the work that is being put in to transform our tourism sector, and with policy changes, investment and prioritisation, focusing on diversification, sustainability and quality, we want to pave a new future for our country.”
Eleni Skarveli, Director GNTO UK & Ireland, “We’re seeing so many destinations across Greece, from tiny islands and major cities to regional municipalities and the private sector, step up to tackle issues around sustainability in tourism. It is truly inspiring and so we wanted to collate and share these positive stories. This hub is just the start, and we cannot wait to see it grow as more and more tourism partners take action and help us on our sustainability journey.”
The sustainability hub will focus on five themes: Sustainable Best Practices, Future Green Projects, Sustainable Initiatives, Sustainable Experiences and Sustainable Holidays in Greece.
Browsers can easily find information under each category and click through to individual pages to delve deeper. Eco-conscious travellers searching for Greek holidays, will find inspiration, approved as responsible and sustainable and taking in some of the country’s most cultural, historic and beautiful places.
The platform will be malleable with new stories, innovations and examples added regularly as the country continues on its sustainable journey.
The website was unveiled at an official launch event, including a panel discussion from sustainability experts: Victoria Turner, Executive Director Ionian Environmental Foundation, Richard Hammond, Executive Producer and Founder of Green Traveller Productions and Tim Williamson, Customer Director at Responsible Travel, moderated by Eleni Skarveli, Director GNTO UK & Ireland.

Greece showcases sustainability at wtm london 2023.
In Press Releases , WTM London .
Greece will again have a high profile at World Travel Market London (November 6-8, 2023) – the world’s most influential travel & tourism event – as the destination will showcase their ambitious sustainability plans after renewing the sponsorship of the International Media Centre .
Adding to the significance of Greece’s participation, the newly appointed Minister of Tourism, Olga Kefalogianni , will be in attendance to actively promote the destination and attend the Ministers’ Summit at World Travel Market in association with UNWTO and WTTC on Monday 6th November at WTM London 2023.
Also, on Monday 6 th November, the Minister will join the Greek National Tourism Organisation (GNTO) press conference in the International Media Centre to address an audience of journalists. The Press Conference will serve as an opportunity to unveil significant developments on Greece’s multifaceted commitment to sustainability, tourism priorities, trade advancements, diversity strategies, and accessibility projects.
On Tuesday 7 th November, delegates will have the opportunity to explore the destination’s sustainability plans in more depth, as the 72 exhibitors on the GNTO stand – including Greek regions, hoteliers, associations, start-up companies, travel agents, DMCs and airlines – will be showcasing their own eco-credentials through a series of short videos as part of a ‘Sustainability Marathon’.
Furthermore, Greece’s sustainability efforts will bolster WTM’s ‘Power to Change’ campaign, which highlights positive tourism initiatives around the world.
Also on Tuesday 7th November, the destination is organising a panel discussion in the International Media Centre on Women in Business in Greece.
Looking ahead to 2024, noteworthy events include the ceremonial lighting of the Olympic flame and the Olympic torch relay in Olympia on the Peloponnese peninsula, preceding the Olympic Games in Paris. Additionally, Thessaloniki will host the annual pan-European LGBTI+ event, EuroPride, in June of the same year, adding to Greece’s diverse and vibrant tourism calendar.
Eleni Skarveli , Director of the GNTO UK & Ireland Office, said the GNTO unveiled its sustainability hub, SustainableGreece.co.uk , one year ago, to shine a light on “incredible” initiatives, ranging from renewable energy and electric vehicles to cutting out single-use plastics.
“Greece is happy to support the Power to Change campaign , emphasising the critical challenges destinations face due to climate change.
“The bell has rung many times, and it is in our hands to drastically encourage meaningful collaborations and partnerships towards a sustainable travel industry.
“The SustainableGreece.co.uk platform serves as a valuable tool for the British trade to discover Greece’s sustainable best practices and initiatives, aiding us on our sustainability journey.”
According to Skarveli, the challenges of heatwaves and forest fires showed the importance of finding solutions to the climate crisis.
Skarveli highlighted how mainstream tour operators had expanded their capacity and extended the tourism season – while smaller specialists are helping to open up smaller islands that can be reached via flights to larger destinations such as Rhodes and Kos.
Furthermore, the Greek tourism minister will be able to talk about diversity, equality, and accessibility in tourism. One key accessibility project is the development of Seatrac, which enables wheelchair users to swim in the sea at 280 beaches in Greece.
Juliette Losardo , Exhibition Director at World Travel Market London, said:
“I am thrilled that Greece will again sponsor our International Media Centre, especially as pioneering sustainability initiatives play such a vital part in its marketing.
“The GNTO has seen great returns from its previous sponsorship of the media centre at WTM London so we’re excited that it will again play a key role and amplify our ‘Power to Change’ messages.
“Having such a high profile among the world’s established trade and consumer journalists and top social media influencers, is essential for the Greek tourism trade to exchange ideas and drive innovation.”

GNTO: Greece Achieves Tourism Goals in 2021 but More Challenges Ahead
GNTO Secretary General Dimitris Fragakis with TIF-Helexpo CEO Kyriakos Pozrikidis during the 85th Thessaloniki International Fair.
Greece achieved its main goals for this year’s tourism season but is still up against challenges, according to Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) Secretary General Dimitris Fragakis .
Taking part in a panel discussion last weekend in Thessaloniki, Fragakis said the Greek government focused on achieving “two goals” set for this year’s tourist season and succeeded.
According to the GNTO’s secretary general, the government’s first goal was to open to tourism safely by applying health protocols and travel procedures that would ensure the health of visitors, employees and society.
The second goal was to have a season much better than last year , reaching even 50 percent of the arrivals of 2019.
“We achieved both goals and we did because we had a specific plan which was carried out successfully and with the assistance of all those involved in the tourism industry,” he said.
According to the latest forecasts , revenues from tourism in Greece could reach 12 billion euros this year .
Challenges are still there
However, Fragakis said that Greek tourism is now facing the “great challenges of the day after”, as Greece moves towards the post-pandemic era.

“The crisis we are going through is acting as an accelerator of developments and the small victories we have achieved so far in the tourism sector should not make us complacent,” he said.
Listing the biggest challenges of the post-pandemic era , he highlighted the need to focus on sustainability , improve infrastructure , promote the authenticity and the unique identity of Greece, invest in quality services and education , and the need for digitization .
“These are crucial challenges that we must overcome in order to become even stronger against international competition,” he highlighted.
The GNTO secretary general spoke at a panel discussion during the conference “COVID Pandemic: Threat or opportunity?” , organized by the Aristotle University on the sidelines of the 85th Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF) .
