It's come a long way since the first headset was created in the late 1960's, when it was mainly used to provide training across skills like aviation and surgery. Now, you can visit one of these centres across Melbourne, strap on a headset and enter everything from cyberpunk universities and zombie apocalypses to racecar simulators and the surreal, mind-bending world of  Alice in Wonderland.

Unlike your standard escape rooms that are relegated to the physical realm, Apsis uses virtual reality technology to transport its guests to insanely detailed worlds. Archie Brothers Cirque Electriq

Who says arcades are just for kids? Archie Brothers Cirque Electriq has become a Melbourne mainstay for adults trying to relive their childhood. The first thing you'll notice when you step inside is that it's like entering a neon-hued vaudevillian dream that's highly reminiscent of a PG version of  Blade Runner.  There are dozens of arcade games to try out, as well as bowling and, most recently, a virtual reality arena. Jump into the Zero Latency Virtual Reality dome around the corner, pop on your VR headset, pick up the controller and decide which world you want to enter. Are you keen to fight a swarm of zombies, destroy killer robots or perhaps explore a gravity-less world?

VIRI  is located  a few hundred metres from Southern Cross Station, and it offers 16 virtual reality experiences ranging from immersive arcade games and cosmic adventures to racecar driving and first-person shooters. Sessions can take up to ten people, and when your eyes need a break from the screen time, you can relax on the comfortable couches until you're ready to go again. 

Entermission

Entermission is a virtual reality escape room that has sprinkled multisensory stimulation in the mix; as you solve puzzles in your virtual world, you'll also experience wind, heat, vibration and scents. And if you tend to run into walls after donning your VR headset, Entermission has removed that hazard by creating experiences that are fully seated and that leave you completely hands-free. Zero Latency

• North Melbourne

Situated a zombie's lurch from Macauley station, Zero Latency specialises in multiplayer, free-roam (meaning no pesky wires) VR games, where up to eight players work together to explore alien worlds, investigate strange disturbances on spaceships and – yes, Walking Dead fans – battle hordes of the undead. The entire experience takes place across 400 square metres of flat, empty warehouse space, upon which gamers tread with headsets, backpacks and weapons. Through in-game prompts and trickery, players can actually walk upwards of one kilometre back and forth through the warehouse without hitting a wall.

You’ll love this if you haven’t played VR before as the whole process is set up perfectly for newcomers. It can accomodate up to 8 players at one time (maximum 5 or 6) per game with plans to expand to 12 fairly soon(at time of review given) the owners are very friendly and welcoming and do a great job of explaining how to play and interact within the game. The only down thing I will mention is if you’re a seasoned gamer or played VR for 30-40hrs prior you may find it a little easy, although still enjoyable! VR is still in the baby stages of its technologies and often companies have tackled the difficulty in the player ability to learn to use it by making experiences very linear. Having done countless escape rooms and tried various VR experiences this place made me feel that VR has finally ventured in a truely immersive experience with collaboration between players and also exploration of the environment with Easter eggs in its game. Highly recommend “Alice in Wonderland”. The hosts Ariel and Adrian were friendly and very pleasant to talk to and did not sound salesy at all, which made the place feel very welcoming. What is a vr escape room.

An escape room involves placing a group of players in a room which they need to explore and work together to solve a range of puzzles using various clues they locate within a timeframe. Apsis VR Melbourne evolves the escape room experience by providing players with an immersive but otherworldly experience which cannot be captured by your run-of-the-mill escape room. Travel to far off lands while you try to crack the code and escape in time

HOW LONG IS A VR ESCAPE ROOM GAME?

Games last for 45 minutes with an extra 15 minutes added to get players ready to start.

IS THERE AN AGE RESTRICTIONS?

For most of our VR games, you must be at least 10 years old to play and must have a guardian present.

Some of our games, such as House of Fear and Sanctum, require that players to be at least 16 years old in order to play.

CAN TWO PLAYERS PLAY WITH THE SAME TICKET?

A single ticket only applies to a one player.

HOW MANY PEOPLE CAN PLAY AT THE SAME TIME?
