While the country is easy to navigate as a solo traveler, there are also plenty of amazing tour options for those who prefer traveling in groups or who might not have the time or energy to plan their own getaway.

I’ve been visiting Australia since 2006 and have used many tour companies over the years (in addition to getting around on my own). In this post, I share my list of the best travel companies in Australia to help you make the most out of your next trip.

From simple walking tours to in-depth, multi-day excursions, there’s something on the list for every interest — and every budget !

1. Best Bike Tour Company: Bonza Bike Tours

Bonza is a bike tour company in Sydney that offers a number of options, depending on what you’re interested in. The Highlights tour lasts 2.5 hours and will show you all the major points of interest in Sydney. It’s suitable for families and kids, costing 99 AUD for adults and 79 AUD for children.

For a more in-depth experience, the Classic tour (129 AUD) lasts 4 hours and provides a much more thorough introduction to this world-class city. They also offer bike rentals so you can just explore the city on your own in case you don’t have the time for a full tour (bike rentals cost 30 AUD for 4 hours and 40 AUD for 24 hours).

2. Best Walking Tour Company: I’m Free

If you haven’t done much research before your arrival, this is a good company to start with. Be sure to tip your guide at the end!

3. Runner Up Walking Tour Company: iCity Tours

There are six different free tours on offer, each lasting around 90 minutes. The Orientation tour offers a quick introduction to the city and its past. If you have more time, be sure to check out the Convicts and Colonials tour as well. It will give you a sense of what life was like as a convict in Western Australia.

4. Best Party Tour Company: The Magic Bus

Trips go from Perth north to Broome or east to Melbourne so you have to time your trip accordingly to line up with the set departure. The itineraries are always flexible, as they let riders vote on where to go and what to do, so every trip is unique. They try to keep a balance of 50% men and 50% women, as well as a balance of different nationalities, so there is always a diverse group.

Prices vary per trip but expect to pay around 250 AUD per 1,000 kilometers.

5. Our Top Tour Pick: Intrepid Travel

Unlike some of the companies above, this is not a party tour. They are small groups led by expert local guides with a focus on culture, history, and food, as well as ethical travel and leaving a small environmental impact. You’re guaranteed to return home with a much deeper and more nuanced appreciation of your destination.

We had a four-and-a-half-week trip to Australia and New Zealand. We wanted to see as much as we could, so the trip involved a lot of flights, transportation, and hotels. All of that went off without a hitch. We also had multiple small group tours in each location and all of those showed up on time or even a little early. We had 22 tours and you could tell they did their homework by the quality and professionalism of the tour personnel. Zicasso’s travel company and their associates in the countries we were in were very accommodating and very easy to work with. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to family or friends.

Our Zicasso travel agent was wonderful. I was impressed with how fast she reached out to me and with the questions she asked about what we wanted out of our trip, our budget and how it should be used, and our priorities. Our trip itinerary was wonderful to start with and easy to adjust to make it perfect! Our trip went by without any problems and I always felt confident knowing I had phone numbers and our travel agency in case something went wrong. I also felt more confident having travel insurance. Some of our tours were canceled because of the weather and I easily got the refund for those. We had fun, high-yield activities that were touristy, while also doing some "off-the-grid" things away from most people. I enjoyed both. Transportation was always thought about, which was great. I was very happy with Zicasso's travel partner and will definitely use them for future travel!

This Zicasso travel agency was the most qualified travel agency I have ever worked with. The travel agents were the most impressive people I have ever dealt with. Both individuals kept me in the loop with every change I made and supported me all the way with all the required paperwork I needed to gain entrance to New Zealand. I can't tell you how many times I have spoken, texted, and emailed both of these ladies, and each time I was always greeted like a friend and provided with excellent service. I will always choose them to meet my travel needs.

Zicasso's tour operator was fantastic from the moment we contacted her. We were traveling to New Zealand for the first time and I was overwhelmed with all of the places to see and things to do. Our travel agent forwarded a map to us to look at locations and then sent a list of possibilities. Once my husband and I decided on the length of stay, she provided a couple of possible itineraries. We partnered with our travel company and kept working together until we felt like we had the perfect trip planned. There were only a couple of hiccups once we were on the trip and our travel agent was quick to respond and help out. I would use our tour operator again and highly recommend them.

Our Zicasso travel agent helped us plan a dream family vacation with our adult sons to Australia (Melbourne, Sydney, and Cairns) and New Zealand (Queenstown, Te Anau, Milford Sound, Wanaka). We only had three weeks for two countries, but our tour operator fit in a Great Barrier Reef dive, Melbourne and Sydney bike tours, wine tastings, a private luxury boat tour of Sydney, river rafting, a Siberian Air and jet-boat experience with a 7km hike through New Zealand's wilderness, an overnight stay on a boat in Milford Sound, glow worms, a wildlife sanctuary, and a steamboat ride to enjoy tea at a farm to watch sheep shearing. All this and we still had free time to explore on our own. The accommodations were top-notch and the majority had laundry facilities in our unit! He was fantastic to work with – highly responsive and detailed, and we would definitely recommend his services! His presentation of the itinerary and activities was really helpful. He spent over two hours with a video presentation covering all aspects of our trip. This included hotel and activity locations, with detailed views. This made things really easy to navigate once we were there. Anything he reserved for us went without a glitch and all transports showed up on time. Cyclone Jasper hit Australia right before our trip and Zicasso's travel partner spent a lot of unexpected extra time reconfiguring the first few days of our itinerary, given the storm's impact on our first location. Again, another two-hour conference covering these changes, which put our minds at ease. We still got everything on our dream list covered and greatly appreciate his extra time, especially as this was during the holiday season. It really was the trip of a lifetime!

Zicasso’s travel agency did an outstanding job organizing our four-week adventure trip. Our agent provided us with helpful information and listened well. We felt she truly “got us” and came up with an itinerary that was a good fit for our personalities, physical activity levels, interests, and priorities. The trip was terrific. It is impossible to single out a favorite experience because there were so many highlights. We had a good balance between experiencing nature in beautiful places, as well as art and culture. There were several opportunities to get up close and personal with wildlife that is exotic to us North Americans, both in the wild and at wildlife refuges. We enjoyed many boat rides, including, but not limited to, a sailboat cruise around Sydney Harbour, a boat ride along the rugged coast of Bruny Island in Tasmania, and a ride in the ferry to and from the MONA (Museum of Old and New Art) in Hobart. The agency booked us in comfortable, good lodgings in good locations, mostly hotels, but notably a bed and breakfast on a family farm on Kangaroo Island, where the owner provided dinner and breakfast, and could have been a five-star chef. Any enterprise that lasts for four weeks is bound to have a few glitches. None of the few we experienced were the fault of our travel agency and they were all relatively minor. Most importantly, whenever the agency became aware of an issue, they were always attentive and helpful, and managed to resolve the matter in real time and to our satisfaction.

Overall, the trip was amazing and we thoroughly enjoyed the adventures in New Zealand and Australia. The honeymoon/vacation planned by our Zicasso travel partners (who helped us with changes due to flight delays and weather impacts due to Cyclone Jasper) couldn’t have been any better and met our every expectation. Our travel agents were such a great help and even though it was the holidays, managed to give their time to ensure we were looked after. We had just enough planned by them regarding excursions, which allowed us to enjoy free time on our own to plan side excursions in the cities we visited. We would definitely plan another trip with them and would recommend them to anyone looking to travel to either country.

Brisbane to Cairns Experience: Sand Dunes & the Whitsundays

Great from start to finish, only thing I would change is instead of staying in Airlie Beach for one night would have liked to get a night train instead of day train to Cairns, the hostel in Airlie was one of the worst I’ve stayed in and I would have rather had more time in Cairns rather than waste a day travelling. The rest of the trips and accommodations were all really nice. All of the tour guides along the way were excellent from Fraser Island, the staff on Boomerang sailing Whitsundays, noosa Everglades and staff on Passion for the barrier reef cruise and diving. Best of all were our brilliant tour guides Noddy and Mo(Steph) from G adventures, Big thank you to both for making the experience so enjoyable and Noddy for keeping everything organised and to schedule.

Brilliant experience. First time travelling alone and it was fantastic. Darcy provides a lot of information and made the whole experience really brilliant. The itinerary did feel a little rushed and could have done with an extra night in most places however we did manage to pack a lot in.

Excellent tour apart from ScotDesco experience which was a great disappointment. Virtually no activities and accommodation poor. Gawler Mountains tour with Geoff was excellent, great scenery and knowledgeable commentary. Arid Gardens and sculptures very educational. Head of the Bight and Nullarbor touring very interesting. The Big Farmer sculpture at Wudinna is without doubt the best big thing in Australia. Murphy’s Haystacks were exceptional unique rock formations. Our driver guide Simon went out of his way to make sure we enjoyed our adventure.

Kangaroo Island Adventure

Good trip I do think the first day would be better to take early ferry to give more time on kangaroo island rather than the late afternoon one. Probably a little in the expensive side for what you get. Tour leader Leonie was great.

The trip was great. However, I didn’t like the hostel in Airlie Beach. It was the worst one in this trip. Overall was great

It's an adventure, not a holiday Mar 2024 • Solo I wanted to see some of the west coast of Australia, which isn't as easy as the East Coast, especially if you don't have your own form of transport. This trip was perfect for that! There were about 22 of us in total, all varying ages, and some solo or with a friend or two, aswell as a wide range of nationalities. We were able to see some beautiful places, helping us to appreciate the natural world. We saw wild kangaroos, wild dolphins, turtles, and more if you chose to do an excursion. Everything was well organised, and it helps that the job to ensure it was organised was our leader, Geoff. He was able to ensure the smooth running of the tour, while we focussed on the experiences. Geoff told us about some of his favourite spots, enlightened us with his own stories and experiences, and took us to places we wouldn't have known about otherwise. Breakfasts, lunches, and dinners are included. This is mainly cereals or toast for breakfast, wraps for lunch, and a mixture of meals in the evenings. Everyone gets stuck in to set up, prepare, cook, and clean up afterwards. As Australia is a big country, there were long bus journeys, unfortunately, I feel the bus could have been more updated. It was tight between the seats, and I am only 5 foot 2. The only place for our legs was straight down, there was no room to put them underneath the seat in front of us, to stretch them out a little, as the seats have low backs. We also had a day bag with us on the bus, and this had to go by our feet as there was no where else to put it, such as over head compartments, or under the seats due to how little space there was. I felt bad for those who were taller. Our large bags were in a trailer attached to the bus, which I thought was a good idea. There were also no curtains or blinds on the windows. I was sat on the left side of the bus, and it got very hot due to the sun being that side. I put my hat and sunglasses on due to how bright it was, though I was then not able to feel the aircon as it was right above my head and if I had my hat on, I couldn't feel the air, so became quite hot. Due to being on the road for long periods of time, I feel these issues on the bus need to be looked at a bit more. We stopped for plenty of toilet/snack breaks at road houses/supermarkets. The accommodation was good for me, I chose the shared hostel accommodation. We didn't spend much time in the rooms. I was first concerned we may be sharing rooms with others outside of the tour although that was not the case. We shared with those on the tour, and the dorms were mixed. I think those with private rooms had a few reservations. It would have been nice to have been able to spend time at some of the places where we had our accommodation such as when we visited Monkey Mia, or Geraldton. We mainly got everywhere in the evenings, and left early morning. The trip is fast paced, and a full day at one, or both of these would have been great. I know this would add cost, and make the tour longer, but they seemed like lovely places to explore and almost everyone said they would have liked to have stayed at Monkey Mia for atleast a day. I personally loved the trip and seeing the different areas of Western Australia. It is not an area I heard too much about and I am glad I decided to do the tour. I would like to once again thank, Geoff for his fantastic work ethic, and showing us some wonderful scenery/wildlife in Western Australia. It was clear that he loves his job. I feel we all had a magical night on the beach while stargazing and seeing baby turtles. A night to remember! If you go to do this trip, make sure to take a fly net for your head. There are lots of them!

This year, our readers were especially drawn to companies that utilize local expertise and experience to thoughtfully design trips that will entertain as well as inspire.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey , T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated tour operators and safari outfitters based on their staff and guides, itineraries and destinations, activities, accommodations, food, and overall value.

The top picks were noted for their deep knowledge of destinations and guides who "go the extra mile." One reader who has been traveling for more than five decades said a trip with Classic Journeys (No. 2) was the "very best" they had experienced. Others noted attention to pandemic safety details, while one who went to Norway was charmed by a "wonderful surprise dinner in Bergen out on the water that was fantastic."

Tour operators that seamlessly navigated the logistics of a trip also came out on top. Quasar Expeditions (No. 9) was noted "for really planning out every detail" so that "all you have to do is show up and have a great time." Meanwhile, of TCS World Travel (No. 10), a guest said: "You never lift a finger and just spend your time actually exploring the destination." They even added that they "learned so much" along the way.

Among the five companies on this year's list that weren't on last year's were two women-only tour operators that cater to travelers of all ages. AdventureWomen (No. 14) has multiday tours designed by women from Bhutan to Yellowstone National Park, while Explorer Chick (No. 15) has everything from day trips — like glassblowing in Baltimore and cave rappelling in St. Louis — to full itineraries in Machu Picchu and the Galápagos. One reader said her Everest Base Camp trip with AdventureWomen was filled with "like-minded women" who "bonded so well," while another said she felt it was a "safe tour group for women."

Ola rideshare shuts down across Australia including in Sydney, Perth

The rideshare service had been operating across the country for six years but is now closing with little warning.

One of the biggest competitors to Uber has abruptly announced it is shutting down its services across Australia.

Rideshare service Ola sent out an email to customers, including in Sydney and Perth, revealing that it is “discontinuing operations” from April 12.

“This means that you will no longer be able to book any rides through your Ola app from that date,” the email read.

“You must not take any rides with any vehicle purporting to be an Ola vehicle or Ola driver from 12th April 2024. Ola has not authorised any driver or any other party to use the Ola brand or provide rides on Ola’s behalf.”

The email did not reveal why Ola was shutting down its services with very little warning.

News.com.au has reached out to Ola for comment via its support services contact after its media inquiry email bounced back.

In its email to customers, Ola explained it would be able to access customers’ account information from their app and raise any queries or issues to their customer care team for a period of 30 days until 11th May 2024 – before being permanently locked out.

It is also believed drivers were sent an email asking them to download all relevant information for tax and business purposes before the app becomes unavailable on May 11.

The Transport Workers’ Union (TWU) is calling on Ola to pay workers what they are owed following news that the rideshare company will close operations across Australia and New Zealand.

TWU national secretary Michael Kaine said the shutdown showed the urgency of getting minimum standards in place to level the playing field and protect workers.

“Workers in the gig transport economy have for too long been ripped off minimum wage and other rights, and put under deadly pressure to prioritise speed over safety when delivering food,” he claimed.

“We will seek an urgent meeting with Ola to seek the best possible outcome for affected rideshare drivers.

“Around the world, courts and governments have struggled to keep up with the rampant exploitation in the gig economy. The Closing Loopholes Bill recently passed by federal parliament is a sophisticated answer to this global crisis.”

Recently federal parliament passed legislation which will empower the Fair Work Commission to set and enforce standards in the gig economy, with laws to take effect in August.

On its website, Ola boasts it is one of the world’s largest ridesharing companies, operating in Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and India.

In Australia, Ola was available to riders in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Adelaide, Canberra and Perth – but it appears users around the country have received the same email announcing its closure.

Ola announced it was launching in Australia in 2018. It aims to take Uber’s crown by focusing on rider safety and driver pay .

The rideshare service was founded by Bhavish Aggarwal and Ankit Bhati in India in 2011.

“We are very excited about launching Ola in Australia and see immense potential for the ridesharing ecosystem which embraces new technology and innovation,” said Mr Aggarwal, the company’s co-founder and chief executive, back in 2018.

“With a strong focus on drivers and the community at large, we aim to create a high-quality and affordable travel experience for citizens and look forward to contributing to a healthy mobility ecosystem in Australia.”

It comes as rideshare services come under increasing pressure in Australia.

This week I will travel to the United States to meet with key officials and defence industry leaders, building on the significant momentum of the AUKUS partnership over the past year.

The acquisition of conventionally-armed, nuclear-powered submarines will be the biggest leap in Australia’s military capability, with significant opportunities to grow jobs and exports in Australia’s Defence industry.

Our  recent announcement  of the build and sustainment partners for Australia’s conventionally-armed, nuclear-powered submarines marked an important milestone for the development of supply chains and workforce with the United States and United Kingdom, building our collective industrial capacity and more robust and resilient supply chains.

This follows the passage of the 2024  National Defense Authorization Act  through the US Congress in December last year, which demonstrated unprecedented support for the AUKUS partnership, including through scientific, technological and industrial cooperation.

The visit to the United States will augment this recent progress.

I will visit the HII shipyard in Newport News, Virginia. HII is the largest military shipbuilder in the US and one of two US companies that designs and builds US nuclear-powered submarines.

I will also attend the Sea-Air-Space Exposition which serves as a crucial meeting point for leaders within the US defence industrial base, private-sector, and key US military decision-makers. While at the expo, I will participate in an Australian industry roundtable focused on doing business in the US, and a panel discussion that will provide an update on AUKUS.

This year’s event will see more than 60 companies exhibit at the Australian Pavilion. The Sea-Air-Space Exposition is one of the largest defence expositions in the US and presents a valuable opportunity for Australian companies to showcase their goods, services, technology and solutions to government and industry officials from across the US.

Jonas Vingegaard has been taken to hospital along with leading Australian rider Jay Vine after some of the world's best cyclists suffered injuries in a mass crash at high speed in the Itzulia Basque Country race in Spain. 

The reigning double Tour de France champion Vingegaard was reported to have suffered a broken collarbone and several broken ribs but was "conscious" after the alarming crash that threatens his hopes of a famous treble in July.

Vine, last year's Tour Down Under winner, also ended up crashing heavily in a concrete ditch and was taken away by ambulance.

The 28-year-old was later diagnosed with a fractured cervical vertebra and two fractures in his thoracic spine, with no other major injuries or head trauma. 

It was a disastrous day for another modern-day great too, with Remco Evenepoel, the 2022 world champion, managing to walk away from the crash despite suffering what his Soudal-Quick Step later confirmed was a fracture to his right collarbone and to his right shoulder blade.

He will need surgery on Friday in Belgium.

Giro d'Italia champ Primoz Roglic, who had been the overnight leader, also abandoned the race after giving a thumbs-up to cameras from the team car to show he was OK.

In all, 12 riders near the front of the peloton were involved in the crash, which happened with about 35 kilometres left of the fourth stage between Etxarri Aranatz and Legutio, in northern Spain.

The leaders were making a sweeping right-hand turn on a slight but swift descent, with some sliding off, sending others off the road into the ditch.

Denmark's Vingegaard, who has been in spectacular form and was favourite for the 2024 Tour de France, had to be carried to the ambulance in a neck brace and needed oxygen after treatment at roadside by doctors.

The race was then neutralised until the finish, with only the six riders who had been at the front being allowed to sprint for the finish to try to win the stage, with victory eventually going to the underwhelmed South African Louis Meintjes, who admitted it was a hollow triumph.

"It's a sad day. I wish all the guys who crashed all the best and wish them a fast recovery," Mattias Skjelmose, who took the overall race lead from Roglic, said at the finish.

"My mind is with the guys who crashed, and right now I am not thinking about the leader's jersey."

The crash, which featured three of the world's most outstanding riders in Vingegaard, Evenepoel and Roglic, was also a huge blow for 25-year-old Vine, who has graduated from riding a turbo trainer in his living room to being a peloton star.

He had begun the week-long race on Monday with an exceptional time trial that had left him second behind only Roglic at that stage and revealed afterwards that the Itzulia had been only a late addition to his schedule.

Earlier on Thursday, Roglic's teammate at BORA-Hansgrohe, Lennard Kamna, was reported to be in a "stable condition" in intensive care after he had collided with a car during a training ride in Tenerife.

Music industry 'stalwart' behind huge Aussie rock tours dies

A n Australian music industry stalwart who put together some of the biggest tours ever seen, including for rockers AC/DC, has died.

Garry Van Egmond died aged 82 on Saturday after surgery complications, his entertainment company, TEG said.

The Melbournian had spent almost 50 years in the industry, in touring, production of theatrical events, event merchandising, marketing, and promotion across Australia, New Zealand and Asia.

His shows sold over 35 million tickets.

He was responsible for four of the biggest concert tours of Australia including Dire Straits in 1986, Jesus Christ Superstar in 1992, Riverdance in 1997 and AC/DC in 2010.

His Dire Straits Brothers In Arms tour sold 250,000 seats in Sydney alone.

It made the Guinness Book of Records.

TEG Group CEO Geoff Jones said Van Egmond was "not only a highly valued colleague but a thoroughly decent person, and a resounding talent with the highest integrity."

"His legacy will stand the test of time," Jones said.

In a statement his company called him a "respected music industry stalwart"

He was also behind Bette Midler's The Divine Miss M Tour in 1978, which sold out 72 performances, and in 2010 AC/DC's Black Ice Tour, which became the fastest-selling concert in Australian history.

It sold 520,000 tickets in under three hours, with the concert going on to sell over 760,000 tickets in Australia and New Zealand.

His son, Christo Van Egmond TEG Van Egmond Managing Director called his father a "true gentleman in the business."

He said he was "highly regarded and respected by artists, managers, agents and everyone he worked with."

"He was a superb mentor to me and I have enjoyed working with him for nearly 30 years," he said.

"Over that time we have presented some amazing events in Australia, New Zealand and Asia.

"He was a fantastic father and friend to me and will be missed dearly.

Garry also had a daughter, Katie, and grandchildren Hugo and Saskia.
