1. Have it professionally arranged

2. use the meter, 3. negotiate a price in advance, 4. only use official taxis, 5. opt for women-centric options, if applicable, 6. consider using a rideshare app instead, final thoughts on having a safe taxi ride.

Anyone who’s traveled has experienced the difficulty of negotiating transportation in a new city. Whether you’re trying to hop on a local train or figure out where the hotel shuttle pickup is, getting to and from places within your destination can sometimes feel like half the battle.

Taking advantage of a taxi can be a quick and simple way to get around, but are taxis safe? Are they safer than Uber or other peer-to-peer ride hailing services?

Here are six quick safety tips for navigating your taxi situation while traveling so you’ll never feel uneasy in the back seat.

There are still locations where taxis reign supreme over rideshares and public transit. In this case, you’ll want to do your best to have a taxi arranged for you. Locals to a country are more likely to know the trusted taxi companies, and businesses such as in-airport taxi services can help you find a driver with ease.

The same can be said for hotels; many times, front desk agents are able to call for rides with their pre-arranged cab companies. Some higher-end hotels provide their own car service, an amenity that can be included or added later to your hotel folio.

If you’re hopping inside a taxi, the easiest way to make sure that you won’t be overpaying is by asking to use the meter. This type of situation will be highly location-dependent. Some countries have regulations that set a fixed price for certain rides (such as those from the airport to the city center), while others leave it up to the drivers, which is the case for Paris taxis, for example.

Get your phone working before you leave the airport so you can follow along to your destination with Google Maps.

Before you take off, ask the driver to turn on the meter so that you aren’t hit with an unexpectedly large bill at the end.

If the meter is broken or you can’t otherwise use it, your next step is to negotiate a price. As we mentioned above, some cities will regulate the amount you’ll pay to your destination, especially when leaving from the airport. However, when this isn’t the case, you’ll first want to talk to the driver about your destination and the fee that they plan on charging you.

It’s a good idea to look up average taxi costs before you travel so you know the ranges to expect; if the price seems a little high, see if you two can negotiate on a compromise. Again, do this before the ride begins.

Whether you’re paying a fixed rate or using the taximeter for your ride, you’ll want to use a card that’ll protect you. Credit cards have consumer protections that won’t leave you liable for fraud — plus different travel credit cards allow you to earn increased bonus points for travel purchases.

If you need to pay cash, be sure to bring along a card that’ll waive your ATM fees and won’t charge any international transaction fees.

Did you know that in Almaty, Kazakhstan, everyone in the city is an impromptu cab driver? You simply hail a passing vehicle on the road, let them know where you’re going and hand them a few bucks when you step out.

Although this can be an efficient way to get where you're going, the truth of it is that it’s not an especially safe way to travel. Official taxi drivers are subject to strict regulations; their cars must meet a certain standard and they’re part of a larger organization. Sticking with these types of drivers, especially when flagging one down on the street, is a much safer option.

You’ll typically find more official taxi drivers in larger cities, such as Cancun, Paris and New York, and sometimes in smaller and more midsize locations, too.

In some cities, you might even find taxi services geared toward women. An October 2019 survey of 500 women conducted by Alarms.org, the website of the National Council for Home Safety and Security — a national trade association — found that 45% of riders prefer female drivers. And several companies are answering the call, as there are now specific taxi options available for solo female travelers that you might consider booking.

Pink Cab, for example, is an Egyptian taxi app dedicated solely to women. Its drivers are female and it will only pick up female passengers. Charlotte-based Just Her Rideshare is another women-only rideshare company that targets its services toward women riders and drivers.

Dubai also has a women-only taxi service named Ladies and Families Taxi. While all of its drivers are female, these specialty cabs will pick up both women and those traveling with families.

Do your due diligence before traveling to see if there are any specialty taxis available where you’re going, especially if you’re concerned about your safety.

Uber revolutionized the rideshare industry when it launched in early 2009. Prior to its inception, taxis held sway over the majority of private transportation — unless you were using a shuttle or renting a vehicle. Since then, a variety of competitors have come along to shake up the market, including Lyft (in the U.S.) and other international options.

Along with easier access, rideshare apps provide a much simpler experience for riders, especially those who aren’t entirely comfortable while traveling. Features you can expect to find include the ability to share your ride with others, to keep a saved payment method on file and to input a destination directly into the app.

Not only do these apps eliminate the need for cash , they can also ensure that riders aren’t taken “the long way” around and provide proof of where you’ve traveled.

Some apps, including Uber, also offer additional safety features, such as an in-app panic button, the ability to report unsafe drivers and even the ability to record audio during your ride.

That said, ridesharing experiences are not without incidents. A safety report from Uber released in June 2022 asserts that more than 99.9% of trips in 2019-2020 were completed without any safety report at all; even still, that same report states the total number of sexual assault reports was 3,824.

Given all of the data available, though they’re not crime-proof, rideshare apps are likely the easiest and safest way to hail a ride.

Are taxis safe? For the most part, yes. Taxis have a long history, and you can generally rely upon official ones to take you where you need to go.

For another option, consider rideshare apps, which can offer a whole suite of safety features dedicated to making sure your trip goes smoothly. Otherwise, take advantage of these tips to ensure your next cab ride is as safe as can be.

Ridesharing apps like Uber, Lyft, and Grab have transformed the way we travel. Make sure that you crunch the numbers and use what’s best for you—and your driver—to get where you need to go safely and within your budget.

The extra cost of taking a car or taxi is almost always worth it when you’re traveling, especially if your time is limited. If you’re traveling with a friend or partner, taking a car or taxi doesn’t cost much more than a bus or subway. In fact, in some countries, a car is cheaper than getting a bus to the airport. Plus, you can throw your backpack in the trunk of the taxi instead of trying to squeeze it onto the train.

You need to know the best options, a few common scams and red flags to avoid, and (approximately) what a car or taxi should cost in most places around the world so you can get where you need to go.

Here’s a full breakdown of the costs of using ridesharing apps like Uber and Lyft versus local taxis and the pros and cons—for you and the drivers—of each service when you travel.

Ubers vs. Taxis: Which is Better?

The of whether ridesharing apps are better than taxis isn’t hard to answer anymore. Apps like Uber , Lyft , and Grab are better than taxis in almost every way. It’s actually not even close anymore.

Ride-hailing apps are easy to use, often cheaper (more on that in a bit), safer (although far from perfect), and more convenient than taxis. These advantages matter, especially when you’re in a new country where you don’t speak the language or know the “rules” of taxis.

For me, the ability to reserve a car the night before for your 5am flight, and also land anywhere and get a sense of how much a car to your destination will cost before you get in are two benefits of ridesharing apps that taxis just can’t beat.

Pros of Uber, Lyft, and Grab for Travel

Here are the four biggest reasons why apps are almost always better than taxis when you travel:

Ease of Use

  • Upfront Pricing

Step-by-Step GPS Directions

Trust and safety, accessibility options, reliability.

The ability to order a ride from your phone, confirm the price ahead of time, and pay on your card (instead of worrying about getting cash from an ATM at the airport) is nothing short of a superpower.

You don’t even have to give the driver directions when you get in. They get directions from the app. I’ve landed in a few countries where I don’t speak the language and don’t know what’s a fair price for a taxi. Thanks to Uber or Grab, I’ve confidently gotten to my destination despite massive jet lag.

Did you know that you can easily split the price of an Uber with your friends via the app? No more, “I’ll get the next one,” freeloaders. Just easy, effortless payment from everyone involved.

Upfront Pricing (or “No Haggling”)

I hate haggling. That’s why I like using Grab so much when I travel abroad. In Kuala Lumpur , I never had to barter for a ride somewhere. I just booked my ride, went outside, and hopped in my Grab.

KL is a huge city with a massive (and confusing) public transit system. If you’re only in town for a few days and don’t feel like mastering the metro, you can simply sidestep the whole hassle and download Grab.

Visiting a new place means you’re a little out of your element. You don’t know how far you’re going or how to get there, even with an offline map. However, thanks to Uber, Lyft, and Grab, you don’t have to know anything other than your final destination.

The built-in map optimizes the route for the fastest trip and tells your driver where to go.

I also love how GPS directions on the map within the app sets expectations for you and the driver for how long the ride should take. No surprises (usually) and no expensive detours. You still have to watch out for expensive toll roads (especially in Southeast Asia), but aside from the occasional extra charge, you won’t get taken on any lengthy (and costly) “sight-seeing tours” on the way to your hotel.

Female travelers appreciate the ability to track the progress of their ride to make sure they’re headed in the right direction at all times. Uber and Lyft even have a built-in feature where you can “Share Your Ride” with friends and family so they can see where you are in real-time if you’re worried about your safety.

Another huge benefit of using rideshare apps when you travel is the driver review system. The ability to set your minimum star rating and only accept rides from qualified drivers is a big deal for women and anyone else concerned about safety. Plus, the ability to rate and review drivers—both good and bad—further enhances the system for you and other passengers.

Lyft and Uber also require background checks, vehicle maintenance reports, and minimal cleanliness standards from drivers, which greatly reduces the likelihood of dangerous or uncomfortable experiences. But that doesn’t mean that the system is perfect.

Uber is far superior for people with disabilities or anyone who needs wheelchair access. You can book either an UberXL or UberWAV service and know that your driver is equipped with the right access.

I also like the ability to preempt uncomfortable situations with info ahead of time, like if you or your driver are hard of hearing, the app notifies the other party once a ride has been booked so there are no awkward misunderstandings.

This one is tricky because Uber, Lyft, and Grab aren’t always 100% reliable.

Drivers cancel, rides take longer than estimated, and not everyone has a five-star rating. However, ridesharing is more reliable than holding your hand in the air until a taxi happens to drive past.

I’ve run into a few places where Uber and even Grab don’t operate. You can’t always get a ride every time. Surge pricing is annoying in some situations but an occasional expensive ride is still better than wandering around looking for a cab when you really need one.

According to the New York Times, Uber ridership passed taxis in NYC as far back as 2017 . The reason for the shift is clear: using Uber is better than hailing a cab.

Is Uber Cheaper Than a Taxi?

If Uber and Lyft are better than taxis, why do people still use taxis? The answer, of course, is all about price.

There are plenty of times when a taxi can be significantly cheaper than an Uber and not just during surge pricing. Taxis are often cheaper than Uber in two common circumstances, according to Anastasios Noulas, a data scientist at Lancaster University in the U.K.

When is a Taxi Cheaper Than an Uber?

  • Trips below $35
  • Within large cities (like New York or London)

According to Noulas, these short, urban taxi rides (under $35) account for “ 94% of taxi fares .” So, if you’re a New Yorker, you’re probably better off flagging down a yellow taxi for most rides. However, in a lot of other situations, an Uber is probably the cheaper option.

When is an Uber Cheaper Than a Taxi?

  • Going to the airport ( except LaGuardia, JFK, and Logan in Boston )
  • Using UberX Share to split the ride
  • Even UberX is often cheaper than a similar cab fare
  • Fares over $35
  • Longer trips
  • Regional service outside of urban centers

How Surge Pricing Works

The biggest difference between a taxi and an Uber is surge pricing. Obviously. If you’re not aware, surge pricing is an increase in the base price of an Uber fare calculated by evaluating supply (the number of drivers in an area) and demand (the number of people who need a car).

Uber’s surge pricing algorithm is proprietary, but surge pricing typically increases in intervals of 0.10. To put that into dollar amounts, a normal surge price is 1.5x the base fare. So at that surge pricing, a $30 fare would now cost $45.

Surge pricing can be hyper-localized—literally within a few blocks—and subject to constant changes. Some price trackers have found that the Uber surge pricing model updates every 100 seconds (or faster). Surge pricing also peaks during commuting hours, Friday afternoons, and whenever the bars close in your city.

If your surge pricing ever gets ridiculous—like New Year’s Eve pricing—you can usually beat the algorithm by waiting a few minutes to reorder your ride or walking a few blocks away from whatever is causing the surge near you. That’s not always ideal, but if it means saving $50, it’s worth walking for a few minutes (or hailing a cab).

People are quick to point out that taxis don’t have surge pricing—and they don’t—at least not entirely. However, not many people know that taxis in cities all over the world adjust their base pricing throughout the day, in a model that vaguely resembles surge pricing.

How to Save Money on an Uber or Lyft While Traveling

Get free perks from your credit card.

The right credit card can get you a good deal on rides where you’ll also earn bonus points.

The Chase Sapphire Reserve and J.P. Morgan Reserve credit cards include a free Lyft Pink membership as a perk. Lyft Pink includes a 15% discount on all personal rides in the US plus “relaxed” ride cancellations. You’ll also earn 10X Chase Ultimate Rewards points on all Lyft rides.

If you prefer American Express and/or Uber, the AmEx Platinum card includes $200/year in Uber Cash to spend on rides or food delivery. You’ll get $15/month and $20 in December plus a free upgrade to Uber VIP.

Use UberX Share or Lyft Line

Save money on a car when you travel is to team up with other travelers. Airports are a great place to split the cost of a ride to the city with UberX Share (fka UberPool) or Lyft Line carpooling options.

I’ve used both have found that Lyft is better at matching you with other riders headed in the same direction. Either option will get you where you need to go cheaper than a cab, but rarely faster.

If you don’t have the patience for UberX Share, make sure you select the base UberX fare to avoid paying for luxury or oversized vehicles.

Use Discount Codes

If you stockpile a few codes on Google and refer a friend (who somehow isn’t already using Uber or Lyft) you can get a few free rides. Threatening to cancel your account is also a great way to get a few free promo codes. Just saying…

Sign Up for Loyalty Rewards Programs

Lyft has a particularly great partnership with Delta that lets you earn miles for every ride in a Lyft. You just have to link your Delta account and a participating credit card to your Lyft account and you’re good to go.

Track Your Receipts and Spending

If you’re traveling for business , using a ridesharing app is a great way to keep your expenses and per diem in one neat place so you can submit a comprehensive expense report when you’re back in the office. Trust me, you will lose those taxi receipts if you even get them.

Avoid Pickups in Obvious Tourist Areas

Getting an Uber from in front of La Sagrada Familia is going to cost more than from a cafe a few blocks south. Use the money that you’ll save on the ride and enjoy a cappuccino as you wait for your car.

Avoid setting your location in obvious tourist traps to save money and to avoid common scams like cancellation fees (that’s where the driver accepts the fare and never shows up waiting for you to cancel to collect his fee), as well as touts and other jitney scammers.

Rideshare Apps by Country

Now that you understand the basics of pricing, the next step is to figure out which ridesharing apps are available at your destination.

Here’s every country where you can call an Uber, Lyft, or a Grab, and a few places where you’ll need to try a different ride-hailing service.

Countries with Uber

Uber is available in over 10,000 cities in 71 countries (as of 2022). However, several cities within those countries on that list have either restricted service or outright banned Uber, so double-check if Uber is available at your destination.

Uber is constantly changing its service map due to ongoing legal battles, protests, and buyouts from competitors like Grab (Southeast Asia) and Didi (China).

Countries with Lyft

If you didn’t know, Lyft is only available in the U.S. and parts of Canada . As of 2022, Lyft only operates in Vancouver and a few cities in Ontario, including Toronto.

There are “talks” to expand Lyft service internationally, but the company hasn’t announced anything. Don’t expect to use Lyft abroad any time soon given how fierce international competition is.

The more interesting rideshare option for international travelers is Grab.

Countries with Grab

If you haven’t heard of Grab, you probably haven’t been to Southeast Asia. In 2018, Grab actually bought out all of Uber’s operations to become the largest (and often only) ridesharing app in over 500 cities in these eight Southeast Asian countries :

  • Philippines

Grab is about more than just catching a ride. This startup came out of nowhere to quickly become the do-everything “super app” for many people. In addition to rides, you can use Grab to deliver food, groceries, and packages as well as pay on the go.

If you want to save some money (or just get a different experience than in the US), order a Grab Bike and hang on for a ride that’s typically a lot faster and about half the price.

International Ridesharing Services

You have plenty of options for a ride when you travel internationally, aside from Uber and Grab. Here are some of the best ride-hailing apps around the world.

  • GoJek : Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam
  • Didi : China
  • Ola : India
  • Gett : Operating in 25 major UK cities including London, Edinburgh, Manchester, Glasgow and Newcastle
  • Bolt : Operating in 150 cities across Europe, Africa, Mexico and Australia, Bolt aims to offer the lowest-price rides in its markets
  • Cabify : 90 cities in 12 countries across Latin and South America

Scams to Avoid While Traveling

The final thing to keep an eye out for are some of the most common scams targeting tourists and travelers in both taxis and Ubers. No matter how safe your favorite app seems, there are always bad actors. Here’s how to protect yourself against some of the most common scams.

Avoid Taxis at Baggage Claim

Never, ever, ever, ever get into a car with someone offering you a taxi inside the airport. I honestly don’t know how these guys are still in business or who gets into these unmarked, unregulated “taxis.” Since they’re not real cabs, there’s nothing stopping them from charging you triple the normal price for a ride or just outright robbing you. Don’t ever get into an unregulated taxi, especially not one with an aggressive driver.

Always confirm the name of the driver, make and model of the car, and license plate number before getting into a vehicle. Never follow someone to the parking lot. Taxis and rideshare drivers typically have to operate at marked, regulated taxi stands and pick-up areas.

Make Sure the Meter is Running

If you drive for a few minutes and notice that the driver hasn’t turned on the meter, you might think, “Score, free ride!” Sadly, the opposite is true.

A taxi that doesn’t have a visible or “working” meter is illegal. If a driver claims that the meter is broken, you have to get the heck out of that car immediately (not immediately immediately, but when it’s safe to exit), because you’re about to pay a lot of money for your ride.

Rideshares that Never End

Taxis aren’t the only rides that can scam you. You should always insist that your driver officially ends your ride before you get out.

People forget that rides don’t always magically just end. If you’re not paying attention or you’re too drunk or sleepy to notice, unscrupulous drivers can keep the meter running for miles before they pick up their next fare.

Too Many Tolls

Sometimes a toll road really is the fastest easiest way to get somewhere. You shouldn’t always panic if a driver says they know the best way to get you where you want to go. However, drivers can pad their fares with unnecessary tolls, especially when you don’t see the price for each toll.

Incorrect Change

You are liable for tolls in a taxi, Grab, and yes, even an Uber, but the price should be discussed before your driver takes you on an expensive tour of New Jersey’s publicly-funded roads. And often, if your route includes a toll, the app will tell you.

If you opt to pay in cash (especially useful with a Grab since it’s a pain to add your debit card in countries like Malaysia), it can be…challenging to get the correct change. Many drivers will claim they don’t have the right change, especially if you only have large bills. Don’t buy it.

Ask to get the correct change when you arrive at your destination. When the driver has to wait for you to get change, they’ll magically find a few extra bills in their fanny pack .

Also, count the change slowly and carefully. A 2,000 rupiah bill looks similar to a 20,000 rupiah note. They’re even the same color. Make sure you get the right amount.

Public Transportation Alternatives While Traveling

You don’t have to use Uber, Grab, or even a taxi to get around when you travel. In fact, public transit can often be the cheapest, quickest way to get around town. Here are some of the best public transit apps and taxi alternatives when you travel.

Citymapper is the best public transit app I’ve ever used.

You’ll get step-by-step directions with real-time GPS tracking on public transit all over the world, including busses, trains, subways, and even ferries. The app is free and easy to use. Download it if you’re traveling anywhere Citymapper is live.

The only downside is that Citymapper isn’t available everywhere. Citymapper is currently available in 39 urban areas across the world including major cities in:

  • Netherlands
  • And other major cities like: Paris, Amsterdam, Boston, New York, L.A., Philadelphia, DC, Chicago, Seattle, San Francisco, Mexico City, São Paulo, Tokyo, Seoul, and Hong Kong

Rome2rio is my go-to starting point for figuring out the best way to get somewhere. If I don’t know how the heck to get from Bangkok to Saigon, Rome2Rio will show me the price and time required to get there. And it will show me every single option from rideshares and public transit to flights.

Plan your trip and interstitial travel (often rural, overland travel) before you make any big non-refundable reservations. I use Rome2rio to make sure I have some idea of how long it will take to get from A to B and how much the trip will cost.

Google Maps

An oldie but a goodie for a reason. Google Maps can give you pretty solid directions for public transit in a lot of places around the world and is constantly improving.

Tweak your direction settings and arrival times when using the public transit option and always double-check that public transit is still running, especially late at night.

Uber and Lyft

Uber recently announced an update that will show users public transit options, prices, and real-time train and bus info (like estimated arrival times) right in the app. Lyft quickly followed suit with a similar feature.

In a recent CNBC interview, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said that point of the redesign is to “ make Uber the operating system for your everyday life .” Providing viable public transportation alternatives to (often) steep prices for Ubers is a great way to ensure that travelers get where they want to go anywhere on any budget. I’m all for it.

Should You Use an Uber, Lyft, or Taxi When You Travel?

Ridesharing apps like Uber, Lyft, and Grab have transformed the way we travel. Gone are the days of cluelessly bargaining for a taxi in a foreign country. But just because it’s easier, doesn’t always mean that an Uber is your best option while traveling.

Plenty of factors like the length of the ride, time of day, and regional availability can affect the price and ease of using an Uber on the go. Surge pricing is real. Make sure that you crunch the numbers and use what’s best for you—and your driver—when you travel to get where you need to go safely and within your budget.

How best to drive a taxi in Moscow

Moscow is a huge metropolis – the capital of the Russian Federation is three times as large and has three times as many inhabitants as Berlin, for example. Of course, getting from A to B is an important topic for visitors and locals alike. The metro is certainly the number one form of transportation in the Russian mega city. But as practical as the subway may be: in the rush hour it can get damn stuffy on the trains – especially in the city center and on the ring line the trains burst at the seams in the morning and in the evening and sometimes you have wait to be able to get in at all. In addition, you cannot get to the airport by metro. The most obvious solution is certainly the taxi. As a foreigner, you have to know a lot about Moscow and taxis. In Soviet times, taxis were affordable, but not competitive in comparison to heavily subsidized public transport. In addition, taxi drivers had a bad reputation and often questionable work ethic. Hardly everyone drove a taxi in Moscow and there were accordingly few. The development in the wild nineties, which were economically difficult for Russia, in which even many doctors, engineers and scientists had to earn something as taxi drivers, was quite different. The so-called “bombily” (from the Russian word bombit’, to earn something extra) came into service. It became common practice that as a pedestrian on the side of the road you only had to keep your hand out and stop a (usually unmarked) taxi or a bombila in a matter of minutes. A short negotiation about the price and you’re on your way. In 2011, the Moscow city administration estimated that in addition to the 5,000 licensed taxis, at least ten times as many black taxis were on the move.

«Black» taxis – not advisable for tourists

For tourists, especially inexperienced Russia, these taxis are anything but advisable. At first you will have communication problems even with kindly Bombila-drivers without knowledge of Russian. Even with proper school Russian, as a tourist you lack the local knowledge and an idea of the usual prices – which is why you are almost at the mercy of the many black sheep among the «black» taxi drivers.

Russia trip planned? Under the following link you can find out how to get the necessary visa!

However, if you have sufficient knowledge of Russian, are clear about the exact route beforehand and can still negotiate well, it may be worth trying the «black» taxis. Because of the increasingly popular taxi apps, the «black» taxis are a slowly but surely dying phenomenon. As a rule of thumb, you shouldn’t pay more than 500 rubles for a trip within Moscow and if the driver demands too much, just keep going.

Taxi apps: Gett, Yandex, or Uber?

Equipped with a SIM card and mobile internet, it is certainly the best option as a tourist to get around using the taxi app. The world’s leading provider Uber only plays a subordinate role in Russia. Although the app also exists in Russia, Uber works here in cooperation with the local top dog Yandex Taxi. Yandex is often referred to as the Russian Google and is also very popular as a taxi service. The Yandex app works similarly to that of Uber. You can see in advance the fare to be paid later, the license plate as well as the vehicle type and the driver’s previous ratings. However, at Yandex you can pay not only with a credit card, but also in cash with the driver. The prices that Yandex calls in Moscow for the so-called Eco tariff are very moderate. The basic fare, which includes a five-minute journey and three kilometers, is 129 rubles, or about $ 1.81. Each additional kilometer then costs 10 rubles, i.e. $ 0.14. Trips to Moscow airports are billed at the normal tariff. However, a pick-up fee of 449 rubles, i.e. $ 6.32, has to be paid from the major international airports Vnukovo, Sheremetyevo and Domodedovo to the city. The standard fare will be 8 rubles per 1 km and 8 rubles per 1 minute. Of course, Yandex also offers high-quality transport, analogous to Uber’s offer. From the business tariff, in which you are chauffeured in a limousine from 349 rubles ($ 4.91), to the so-called ultimate tariff, in which you drive through in a Mercedes S-Class from 1899 rubles ($ 26.75) Moscow is driven, the Yandex offer knows no limits. Even vehicles specially equipped for transport for children, with special paint can be ordered via the app. Gett’s competition offers a similar range of products at generally lower prices. The cheapest service in vehicles of the VW Polo class currently starts at 99 rubles ($ 1.39). Trips to Moscow airports cost almost a quarter less than Yandex at 350 rubles ($ 4.93). The VIP service with vehicles that include the BMW 7 Series, the S-Class or the Audi A8 is also significantly more affordable at 700 rubles ($ 9.86) – even if fewer inclusive kilometers are included in the price.

Classic taxi services: Rare and usually only on order

Taxis in the western sense are rarely seen in Moscow. Just wave a taxi up from the street like in Berlin, London or New York? This is rather unlikely because there are simply too few taxis. You have to order a classic taxi in Moscow beforehand. Despite the competition from «black» taxis and the increasingly popular apps, there are still numerous companies that offer this. However, it is usually impossible to order one of these taxis without knowledge of Russian. Services that are specially designed for tourists and foreign business travelers can usually be paid for dearly. Therefore, as a tourist, unless you prefer a taxi app from the start, you leave the order to the hotel or local friends.

Moscow transport: metro, bus & taxi in Moscow | How does it work?

  • August 15, 2023

Moscow transport: metro, bus & taxi in Moscow

Moscow transport: how does it work? Here we summarized all you need to know about Moscow city public transport (bus, metro, card Troika), but also taxi in Moscow.

Distances in Moscow: walking in Moscow

Walking. The geolocation of your accommodation in Moscow is important, because the distances are great. You’re definitely not going to be able to do it all on foot. Moscow is the largest city in Europe with more than 12 million intramural inhabitants. Besides, Moscow is made for giants, because everything is big: the avenues, the buildings, the metro stations! So, the place of your accommodation is very important. You can check our blog post: Where to stay in Moscow?

Good to know! We have written 2 other blog posts that could be helpful: Maps of Moscow and Moscow Airport Transfer.

Public transport in Moscow: prices and how does it work?

Even if you are going to be able to visit many interesting places around Red Square (see the article: Moscow Red Square ), you will certainly take the metro to get around, but also to see the most beautiful stations . Furthermore, among public transport the metro remains the fastest solution in Moscow.

Good to know! Public transport is free for children under the age of 7. More specifically, 1 adult may not purchase a ticket for 1 child under the age of 7. If you are 2 adults, it is therefore for 2 children that the trips will be free.

Tips for Moscow city transport

Here are my tips to make travel more pleasant and optimized:

  • Avoid to take Moscow City transport during rush hours. Especially for ground transportation (lots of traffic jams). You will lose a lot of time, especially for city center trips by land transport. Peak hours correspond to office hours: the standard working day begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 6 p.m.
  • Use a mobile application to estimate your journey time as accurately as possible. In Europe, as in Russia, we use CityMapper . It is a free application that allows you to calculate your trips and see all the possibilities to get from one place to another. For the application to work, you must have an Internet connection: either through your French package which can prove to be expensive; either by wifi, in your hotel, in a cafe (very common in Moscow) or by using the free Wi-Fi of the city of Moscow! To download CityMapper on your mobile, just type its name in AppStore or GooglePlay . Then choose the city where you want to use it.
  • Buy a transportation card. If you plan to take public transport several times a day or if you come to Moscow for a university or work exchange, it is more economical to take a transport card. I talk about it later in the article.
  • Further info about airport transfer here: How to get from airport to Moscow?

Moscow metro: the fastest way to get around Moscow

Beautiful! The Moscow Metro is considered the most beautiful in the world! You can find out which stations are worth a visit in my article: The most beautiful stations in Moscow .

Metro timetables. Times vary by station, but approximately the Moscow Metro is open from 5.30 a.m. to 1 a.m.

Below you can find a map of the Moscow metro, with an example of a metro station. You can find other Moscow maps here .

just travel taxis

Metro prices in Moscow

  • A single trip = 57 rubles (from February 1, 2020)
  • Price for transporting a suitcase in the metro = 60 rubles
  • With a transport card , the price of the journey decreases. Example: with the Troika card the price per trip increases to 40 rubles. More details about troika card below.
  • You can also pay with ApplePay or GooglePay.

Where to buy metro tickets?

  • At the cash desks , where you can buy everything: transport card or one-way tickets. Small flat: most of the time, the employees of the metro do not speak English very well. But they are used to it, you will be able to understand each other.
  • At the English terminals , where you can also buy everything. See below for more details on terminal purchases.

Moscow City transport taxi

Bus, trolleybus, tram in Moscow

Avoid at peak hours. The city center can be literally blocked! Mobile applications are very useful to estimate travel times.

Tram. Trams are very nice to do. It’s a bit special. Tram stops are hard on the road. The cars then stop and let the pedestrians get on or off the tram.

Price of a bus, trolleybus or tram ticket

  • One way = 57 rubles (from February 1, 2020)
  • With a transport card , the price drops. Example: with the Troika card the price per trip increases to 40 rubles. More details about transport cards below.

Where to buy bus, trolleybus or tram tickets?

To drivers. There are no controllers on each bus, as in St. Petersburg.

By purchasing a transport card in advance at a metro station. There are few terminals installed near bus, tram or trolley stations.

Good to know! It is possible to pay on the metro, but also on buses with your smartphone or a contactless card (Apple Pay or Google Pay)! The price is 44 rubles per way. Beware, however, of bank charges, as for other ruble payments in Russia. See article: How to pay in Russia?

Transport cards in Moscow

Two most interesting solutions for taking Moscow City transport:

troika card

Troika card prices

  • 1 metro, bus, trolley bus or tram journey: 40 rubles (instead of 57)
  • 90 minutes in public transport (regardless of the number of changes): 62 rubles

How to buy a Troika card?

  • Cost of purchase : 50 rubles. You can get it at all metro stations.
  • Refill . Once the card is purchased, you must reload it. You can choose the amount freely.
  • Where? It is possible to buy the card and recharge it at the metro cash desks or via automatic terminals, in cash or by bank card.

The Troika card is interesting if you:

  • want to take advantage of lower transportation rates.
  • stay in Moscow for a long time (language stays, expatriation, VIE, university exchange), but do not go for frequent daily trips.
  • don’t stay long, but you know roughly how many trips you’re going to make or you don’t mind reloading the card often. Why? It is possible, but long and complicated to recover the initial amount of 50 rubles, as well as the rest on the card.

How much does the unlimited Yediny card (central Moscow area) cost?

  • 1 day = 24 hours = 230 rubles
  • 3 days = 438 rubles
  • 30 days = 2170 rubles
  • There are no unlimited cards for 2, 4, 5, 6 or 7 days.

More details: Moscow transport website

How to buy a Yediny card?

It is possible to buy the card and recharge it at the metro cash desks or via automatic terminals, in cash or by bank card. The card is activated (the countdown starts) at the time of validation and not at the time of purchase. The card must be activated within 10 days of purchase (day of purchase included).

Here are the pictures of the automatic terminal (in English), when buying a Yédiny card.

just travel taxis

The Yediny card is interesting if you:

  • stay in Moscow for a long time (language stays, expatriation, university exchange), but make frequent daily trips.
  • do not stay in Moscow for a long time, but do not want to estimate your trips in advance (Troika card) while enjoying the unlimited.

Our experience with transport cards in Moscow

When I was working in Moscow, I used the Troika card. It was the most economical solution for me. We also used it later when we both went there. On the other hand, the last time we were there, we took the Yediny card and finally we found it more practical, even if it turned out to be less economical in the end.

Our verdict (compared to our travel habits): budget side, the Troika card is better. But for less headache (how much to put on the card? How much is left?…), The unlimited Yediny card is more practical.

Boat trips in Moscow

There are several boat trips on the Moskva River. In addition, it is even possible to buy an unlimited day ticket. For more information, you can then consult the article: Take a boat trip on the Moskva River.

Getting around in Moscow by taxi

There are several types of taxis in Moscow:

  • First, official taxis (sign on the roof);
  • Then individuals who do this out of the blue;
  • And finally Moscow taxis via mobile applications (private drivers or taxi agencies).

Good to know. The cost of a taxi ride to the city center in Moscow is around 500 rubles. If you want to avoid negotiations, use the taxi apps in Moscow.

Uber Moscow: NO.

It works before, but not anymore, because Uber does not use the classic app in Russia (they have created a special app for Russia, only this app works now). So, you have to download the special Uber Russia app… but this application is only available on the Russian AppStore, so it cannot be downloaded for us. Uber’s competitors in Russia such as YandexTaxi or Gett can be used.

Use the YandexTaxi app to take a taxi in Moscow

The Yandex company is the Russian Google. Initially a search engine, it also offers several services. YandexTaxi is then the taxi service in Moscow, it works everywhere in Russia. You can download the app from the AppStore or GooglePlay . Thanks to this application, it is possible to pay the taxi in cash (by default) or by bank card directly (to be specified in the application). If you are thinking of paying in cash, then have rather small denominations so that the driver can give you change. The application is now in French.

How does YandexTaxi work?

  • First, it detects your geolocation.
  • Then you indicate your arrival position using the Latin or Cyrillic alphabet.
  • It then offers you the estimated prices for each range (thrifty, business, etc.).
  • You choose, confirm and wait for the driver to arrive.
  • You identify the driver with the indicated license plate, then at the end YandexTaxi collects the race via your bank card (do not forget to put your card info before using the app, otherwise pay in cash).

Other solution. You can also book a taxi in advance on KiwiTaxi website . It’s easy!

Yandex Taxi Moscow

Public transport and taxi in Moscow: summary

Getting around Moscow is quite simple, as Moscow City transport is well developed. However, because of traffic jams, the metro is the quickest solution. It isn’t an issue, because the Moscow metro is very clean and beautiful. Taxis are rather cheap and easy to find thanks to mobile applications like, for example, YandexTaxi.

The distance to the centre of Moscow (Saint Basil’s Cathedral / Red Square) is 34 kilometres from South Terminal Complex and 42 kilometres from North Terminal Complex. Unfortunately, it can be busy on the roads and you should take into account a car journey that takes longer.

Train aeroexpress to moscow – buy tickets.

The fastest travel option between Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport and the centre of Moscow is the train Aeroexpress. You can get stuck in a traffic jam if you travel by car, taxi or bus, that won’t happen if you take the train. The Aeroexpress commutes between Belorussky Station in the city and the railway station at the airport, located on the south side of the airport at Terminal E. An automated people mover (APM) runs between this station and terminals A and B. The Aeroexpress departs every 30 minutes, travel time is 35 minutes.

From metro station Belorusskaya at Belorussky Station, you can travel by metro to the city centre and other parts of Moscow. The journey time from metro station Belorusskaya to metro station Teatralnaya close to Red Square is only 5 minutes.

Aeroexpress tickets The prices are listed below, an Aeroexpress ticket including a ride with the metro, tram or (trolley) bus costs 560 RUB, the price for a subway ticket is 55 RUB. You can buy tickets for the Aeroexpress at the stations, but it is cheaper to do this online. Please consult website and timetable Aeroexpress for more information.

Aeroexpress

SAVING TIPS: Tickets can be bought at the airport, but online it is easier and cheaper (450 RUB one way, 900 RUB return). A group ticket can be used by four people and costs 1,100 RUB for a single journey and 1,800 RUB for a return (valid for 30 days). The price is the same online and from the ticket machine. Aeroexpress trains run without stopping, besides you can use free WiFi aboard since early 2015.

Bus and metro to Moscow

It is more economical to travel by bus and metro to the centre of Moscow. Needless to say, taking a direct train is easier and faster. With bus 817 and bus 948 you can get in 35 minutes to metro station Planernaya (northernmost station metro line 7). With bus 851 and bus 949 it takes 25 minutes to metro station Rechnoy Vokzal (northernmost station metro line 2). The price of a bus ticket is 57 RUB or 80 RUB.

From both stations you can take the metro to the centre of Moscow, station Kuznetskiy Most for metro line 7 (travel time: 31 minutes) and station Teatralnaya for metro line 2 (travel time: 23 minutes). Metro station Kuznetskiy Most is a short distance from the world-famous Bolshoi Theatre. The total journey time is at least one hour. If the bus ends up in a traffic jam, the journey can take a lot longer.

Tickets for the subway priced 55 RUB are available from the ticket vending machines. You can also buy a day ticket (yediniy) for public transport in Moscow for 200 RUB, it is valid for 24 hours. During the night you can travel by bus H1 between the airport and the city every half hour. Please consult buses to and from Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport and  website Moscow Metro for more information.

Just Airports London are fantastic, courteous, very professional and accommodating to the changes the delegates put upon them. I have had fantastic emails from the team, confirming all of the above. We hope to use them again in the future and I have no hesitation in recommending them to my colleagues.

Just Airports service has been exceptional, and please can you pass my thanks on to the individual drivers who have either taken me to, or fetched me from, work. The service was very good, and their company has been great, we have had good banter and discussions, and all have been cheerful, despite sometimes anti-social hours and frustrating traffic. Many thanks.

Just Airports London were used to transport key crew members. They provided an extremely courteous and professional service at all times with executive vehicles and smartly turned out drivers. I would have no hesitation in recommending their services to other productions.

2018 Primetime Emmy & James Beard Award Winner

In Transit: Notes from the Underground

Jun 06 2018.

Spend some time in one of Moscow’s finest museums.

Subterranean commuting might not be anyone’s idea of a good time, but even in a city packing the war-games treasures and priceless bejeweled eggs of the Kremlin Armoury and the colossal Soviet pavilions of the VDNKh , the Metro holds up as one of Moscow’s finest museums. Just avoid rush hour.

The Metro is stunning and provides an unrivaled insight into the city’s psyche, past and present, but it also happens to be the best way to get around. Moscow has Uber, and the Russian version called Yandex Taxi , but also some nasty traffic. Metro trains come around every 90 seconds or so, at a more than 99 percent on-time rate. It’s also reasonably priced, with a single ride at 55 cents (and cheaper in bulk). From history to tickets to rules — official and not — here’s what you need to know to get started.

A Brief Introduction Buying Tickets Know Before You Go (Down) Rules An Easy Tour

A Brief Introduction

Moscow’s Metro was a long time coming. Plans for rapid transit to relieve the city’s beleaguered tram system date back to the Imperial era, but a couple of wars and a revolution held up its development. Stalin revived it as part of his grand plan to modernize the Soviet Union in the 1920s and 30s. The first lines and tunnels were constructed with help from engineers from the London Underground, although Stalin’s secret police decided that they had learned too much about Moscow’s layout and had them arrested on espionage charges and deported.

The beauty of its stations (if not its trains) is well-documented, and certainly no accident. In its illustrious first phases and particularly after the Second World War, the greatest architects of Soviet era were recruited to create gleaming temples celebrating the Revolution, the USSR, and the war triumph. No two stations are exactly alike, and each of the classic showpieces has a theme. There are world-famous shrines to Futurist architecture, a celebration of electricity, tributes to individuals and regions of the former Soviet Union. Each marble slab, mosaic tile, or light fixture was placed with intent, all in service to a station’s aesthetic; each element, f rom the smallest brass ear of corn to a large blood-spattered sword on a World War II mural, is an essential part of the whole.

The Metro is a monument to the Soviet propaganda project it was intended to be when it opened in 1935 with the slogan “Building a Palace for the People”. It brought the grand interiors of Imperial Russia to ordinary Muscovites, celebrated the Soviet Union’s past achievements while promising its citizens a bright Soviet future, and of course, it was a show-piece for the world to witness the might and sophistication of life in the Soviet Union.

It may be a museum, but it’s no relic. U p to nine million people use it daily, more than the London Underground and New York Subway combined. (Along with, at one time, about 20 stray dogs that learned to commute on the Metro.)

In its 80+ year history, the Metro has expanded in phases and fits and starts, in step with the fortunes of Moscow and Russia. Now, partly in preparation for the World Cup 2018, it’s also modernizing. New trains allow passengers to walk the entire length of the train without having to change carriages. The system is becoming more visitor-friendly. (There are helpful stickers on the floor marking out the best selfie spots .) But there’s a price to modernity: it’s phasing out one of its beloved institutions, the escalator attendants. Often they are middle-aged or elderly women—“ escalator grandmas ” in news accounts—who have held the post for decades, sitting in their tiny kiosks, scolding commuters for bad escalator etiquette or even bad posture, or telling jokes . They are slated to be replaced, when at all, by members of the escalator maintenance staff.

For all its achievements, the Metro lags behind Moscow’s above-ground growth, as Russia’s capital sprawls ever outwards, generating some of the world’s worst traffic jams . But since 2011, the Metro has been in the middle of an ambitious and long-overdue enlargement; 60 new stations are opening by 2020. If all goes to plan, the 2011-2020 period will have brought 125 miles of new tracks and over 100 new stations — a 40 percent increase — the fastest and largest expansion phase in any period in the Metro’s history.

Buying Tickets

  • Ticket machines have a button to switch to English.
  • You can buy specific numbers of rides: 1, 2, 5, 11, 20, or 60. Hold up fingers to show how many rides you want to buy.
  • There is also a 90-minute ticket , which gets you 1 trip on the metro plus an unlimited number of transfers on other transport (bus, tram, etc) within 90 minutes.
  • Or, you can buy day tickets with unlimited rides: one day (218₽/ US$4), three days (415₽/US$7) or seven days (830₽/US$15). Check the rates here to stay up-to-date.
  • If you’re going to be using the Metro regularly over a few days, it’s worth getting a Troika card , a contactless, refillable card you can use on all public transport. Using the Metro is cheaper with one of these: a single ride is 36₽, not 55₽. Buy them and refill them in the Metro stations, and they’re valid for 5 years, so you can keep it for next time. Or, if you have a lot of cash left on it when you leave, you can get it refunded at the Metro Service Centers at Ulitsa 1905 Goda, 25 or at Staraya Basmannaya 20, Building 1.
  • You can also buy silicone bracelets and keychains with built-in transport chips that you can use as a Troika card. (A Moscow Metro Fitbit!) So far, you can only get these at the Pushkinskaya metro station Live Helpdesk and souvenir shops in the Mayakovskaya and Trubnaya metro stations. The fare is the same as for the Troika card.
  • You can also use Apple Pay and Samsung Pay.

Rules, spoken and unspoken

No smoking, no drinking, no filming, no littering. Photography is allowed, although it used to be banned.

Stand to the right on the escalator. Break this rule and you risk the wrath of the legendary escalator attendants. (No shenanigans on the escalators in general.)

Get out of the way. Find an empty corner to hide in when you get off a train and need to stare at your phone. Watch out getting out of the train in general; when your train doors open, people tend to appear from nowhere or from behind ornate marble columns, walking full-speed.

Always offer your seat to elderly ladies (what are you, a monster?).

An Easy Tour

This is no Metro Marathon ( 199 stations in 20 hours ). It’s an easy tour, taking in most—though not all—of the notable stations, the bulk of it going clockwise along the Circle line, with a couple of short detours. These stations are within minutes of one another, and the whole tour should take about 1-2 hours.

Start at Mayakovskaya Metro station , at the corner of Tverskaya and Garden Ring,  Triumfalnaya Square, Moskva, Russia, 125047.

1. Mayakovskaya.  Named for Russian Futurist Movement poet Vladimir Mayakovsky and an attempt to bring to life the future he imagined in his poems. (The Futurist Movement, natch, was all about a rejecting the past and celebrating all things speed, industry, modern machines, youth, modernity.) The result: an Art Deco masterpiece that won the National Grand Prix for architecture at the New York World’s Fair in 1939. It’s all smooth, rounded shine and light, and gentle arches supported by columns of dark pink marble and stainless aircraft steel. Each of its 34 ceiling niches has a mosaic. During World War II, the station was used as an air-raid shelter and, at one point, a bunker for Stalin. He gave a subdued but rousing speech here in Nov. 6, 1941 as the Nazis bombed the city above.

Take the 3/Green line one station to:

2. Belorusskaya. Opened in 1952, named after the connected Belarussky Rail Terminal, which runs trains between Moscow and Belarus. This is a light marble affair with a white, cake-like ceiling, lined with Belorussian patterns and 12 Florentine ceiling mosaics depicting life in Belarussia when it was built.

Transfer onto the 1/Brown line. Then, one stop (clockwise) t o:

3. Novoslobodskaya.  This station was designed around the stained-glass panels, which were made in Latvia, because Alexey Dushkin, the Soviet starchitect who dreamed it up (and also designed Mayakovskaya station) couldn’t find the glass and craft locally. The stained glass is the same used for Riga’s Cathedral, and the panels feature plants, flowers, members of the Soviet intelligentsia (musician, artist, architect) and geometric shapes.

Go two stops east on the 1/Circle line to:

4. Komsomolskaya. Named after the Komsomol, or the Young Communist League, this might just be peak Stalin Metro style. Underneath the hub for three regional railways, it was intended to be a grand gateway to Moscow and is today its busiest station. It has chandeliers; a yellow ceiling with Baroque embellishments; and in the main hall, a colossal red star overlaid on golden, shimmering tiles. Designer Alexey Shchusev designed it as an homage to the speech Stalin gave at Red Square on Nov. 7, 1941, in which he invoked Russia’s illustrious military leaders as a pep talk to Soviet soldiers through the first catastrophic year of the war.   The station’s eight large mosaics are of the leaders referenced in the speech, such as Alexander Nevsky, a 13th-century prince and military commander who bested German and Swedish invading armies.

One more stop clockwise to Kurskaya station,  and change onto the 3/Blue  line, and go one stop to:

5. Baumanskaya.   Opened in 1944. Named for the Bolshevik Revolutionary Nikolai Bauman , whose monument and namesake district are aboveground here. Though he seemed like a nasty piece of work (he apparently once publicly mocked a woman he had impregnated, who later hung herself), he became a Revolutionary martyr when he was killed in 1905 in a skirmish with a monarchist, who hit him on the head with part of a steel pipe. The station is in Art Deco style with atmospherically dim lighting, and a series of bronze sculptures of soldiers and homefront heroes during the War. At one end, there is a large mosaic portrait of Lenin.

Stay on that train direction one more east to:

6. Elektrozavodskaya. As you may have guessed from the name, this station is the Metro’s tribute to all thing electrical, built in 1944 and named after a nearby lightbulb factory. It has marble bas-relief sculptures of important figures in electrical engineering, and others illustrating the Soviet Union’s war-time struggles at home. The ceiling’s recurring rows of circular lamps give the station’s main tunnel a comforting glow, and a pleasing visual effect.

just travel taxis

Double back two stops to Kurskaya station , and change back to the 1/Circle line. Sit tight for six stations to:

7. Kiyevskaya. This was the last station on the Circle line to be built, in 1954, completed under Nikita Khrushchev’ s guidance, as a tribute to his homeland, Ukraine. Its three large station halls feature images celebrating Ukraine’s contributions to the Soviet Union and Russo-Ukrainian unity, depicting musicians, textile-working, soldiers, farmers. (One hall has frescoes, one mosaics, and the third murals.) Shortly after it was completed, Khrushchev condemned the architectural excesses and unnecessary luxury of the Stalin era, which ushered in an epoch of more austere Metro stations. According to the legend at least, he timed the policy in part to ensure no Metro station built after could outshine Kiyevskaya.

just travel taxis

Change to the 3/Blue line and go one stop west.

8. Park Pobedy. This is the deepest station on the Metro, with one of the world’s longest escalators, at 413 feet. If you stand still, the escalator ride to the surface takes about three minutes .) Opened in 2003 at Victory Park, the station celebrates two of Russia’s great military victories. Each end has a mural by Georgian artist Zurab Tsereteli, who also designed the “ Good Defeats Evil ” statue at the UN headquarters in New York. One mural depicts the Russian generals’ victory over the French in 1812 and the other, the German surrender of 1945. The latter is particularly striking; equal parts dramatic, triumphant, and gruesome. To the side, Red Army soldiers trample Nazi flags, and if you look closely there’s some blood spatter among the detail. Still, the biggest impressions here are the marble shine of the chessboard floor pattern and the pleasingly geometric effect if you view from one end to the other.

just travel taxis

Keep going one more stop west to:

9. Slavyansky Bulvar.  One of the Metro’s youngest stations, it opened in 2008. With far higher ceilings than many other stations—which tend to have covered central tunnels on the platforms—it has an “open-air” feel (or as close to it as you can get, one hundred feet under). It’s an homage to French architect Hector Guimard, he of the Art Nouveau entrances for the Paris M é tro, and that’s precisely what this looks like: A Moscow homage to the Paris M é tro, with an additional forest theme. A Cyrillic twist on Guimard’s Metro-style lettering over the benches, furnished with t rees and branch motifs, including creeping vines as towering lamp-posts.

just travel taxis

Stay on the 3/Blue line and double back four stations to:

10. Arbatskaya. Its first iteration, Arbatskaya-Smolenskaya station, was damaged by German bombs in 1941. It was rebuilt in 1953, and designed to double as a bomb shelter in the event of nuclear war, although unusually for stations built in the post-war phase, this one doesn’t have a war theme. It may also be one of the system’s most elegant: Baroque, but toned down a little, with red marble floors and white ceilings with gilded bronze c handeliers.

just travel taxis

Jump back on the 3/Blue line  in the same direction and take it one more stop:

11. Ploshchad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square). Opened in 1938, and serving Red Square and the Kremlin . Its renowned central hall has marble columns flanked by 76 bronze statues of Soviet heroes: soldiers, students, farmers, athletes, writers, parents. Some of these statues’ appendages have a yellow sheen from decades of Moscow’s commuters rubbing them for good luck. Among the most popular for a superstitious walk-by rub: the snout of a frontier guard’s dog, a soldier’s gun (where the touch of millions of human hands have tapered the gun barrel into a fine, pointy blade), a baby’s foot, and a woman’s knee. (A brass rooster also sports the telltale gold sheen, though I am told that rubbing the rooster is thought to bring bad luck. )

Now take the escalator up, and get some fresh air.

Car seats and taxis: here’s what you NEED to know (2021)

This article about taking a taxi with a car seat is written by certified Child Passenger Safety Technician Melissa Conn and may contain affiliate links.

Even if you’re planning a car-free vacation for your family, there’s a decent chance you’ll need to take a taxi at some point. So you’re probably wondering: what’s the deal with car seats and taxis?

In this article we’ll cover everything you need to know about taking a car seat in a taxi. You’ll find out:

Why you should take a car seat in a taxi

What’s the best car seat for taxi rides, how to arrange a cab with a car seat.

In most places in the US, taxis are exempt from car seat laws. But there’s no magical protective bubble around taxis – even in NYC , there are critical or fatal accidents every month .

Many parents who live in or visit big cities don’t give a lot of thought to their option or to the potential dangers of taking kids in a cab without a car seat. What are some common unsafe mistakes?

  • When taking a taxi with an infant, parents strap the baby into a carrier
  • When taking a taxi with a toddler, parents put the baby on their lap and “double belt”, running the seatbelt around both of them
  • When taking a taxi with preschool or elementary school kids, parents let them use the regular seatbelt without a booster seat

None of those is a safe option. The consequences can be dire and could potentially range from serious injury or death. Babies can be crushed by their parents or slammed against the seat in front, kids who are too young for seatbelts can suffer from “ seat belt syndrome ” that damages their internal organs and spines.

In some European countries, children are required to use a car seat in a taxi (sometimes it depends on the distance of the trip). You may even get lucky and encounter taxis that carry car seats with them! If available, they can be arranged via the taxi company apps. I recommend doing research before you go. Search for “[city or country] taxi app” and download it to look at the options before your trip.

Want to know all my best secrets? Click here to learn how to travel with your car seat like a pro!

Bubblebum is the best travel booster seat because it gives a great, consistent belt fit in nearly every car

Fortunately there are plenty of awesome lightweight car seats for travel and even folding car seats that are easy to bring with you for flights or a day in the city. If you are riding in a taxi with a baby, it’s hard to beat the Doona infant car seat as the perfect baby seat for a taxi! Whatever you end up choosing, it’s always prudent to bring a portable car seat for taxi rides to keep your child safe.

Taxi drivers can get impatient with parents installing their car seats. One trick is to leave the car door open until you’re done installing the car seat and buckling your child in. You can be pretty sure no one is going to drive off until all of the doors are closed! Learn how to install your car seat quickly .

Make sure you have practiced multiple ways to install your car seat. While LATCH might be most convenient, sometimes it’s not available in every seating position (or at all in some countries). Get comfortable installing your car seat with a seatbelt as well, just in case. If you’re leaving the US you may encounter seatbelts that don’t lock when you pull them all the way out, so bring a locking clip and learn how to use it (read more about seatbelt locking clips ).

If you have multiple kids in car seats and the driver’s seat is all the way back, don’t be sheepish about asking him to slide forward if possible. Whether you’re installing a car seat or not, everyone deserves leg room!

What’s the best portable car seat for a taxi?

  • Doona infant car seat (birth – 1 year old)
  • Cosco Scenera NEXT DLX convertible car seats (1 – 2 years old)
  • Wayb Pico (2 – 4 years old, in-depth review here )
  • Ride Safer Travel Vest (4 – 6+ years old, in-depth review here )
  • Bubblebum Inflatable Booster Seat (6+ years old, in-depth review here )

Especially for families with older kids, the Ride Safer travel vest and Bubblebum are lightweight and easy to throw in a day backpack! There’s no reason not to bring one of those with you to have for spur-of-the-moment rides.

Ok, so what if you really don’t want to bring a car seat with you? You do have a few options.

Uber Car Seat : If you’ll be in New York City, Washington DC, Philadelphia or Orlando you may be able to order a car with a forward-facing car seat! These are really meant for kids who are 2+ years old (particularly in New York and Pennsylvania, which mandate rear-facing until 2).

Welcome Pickups : Welcome Pickups is a world-wide car service that will provide age-appropriate car seats upon request. They offer service on every continent except Antarctica!

Local taxi companies and car services: There are lots of great independent car services and local taxi companies around the world that offer taxis with car seats. For example, you can order a taxi with car seat options from G7 in Paris and Shebah in Australia .

Taxi car seat FAQs

While it’s legal in some places to take children in a taxi without a car seat, it is extremely unsafe. Taxi accidents happen and the physics are the same as in any other car.

You’ll sometimes find cabs with car seats (especially in northern Europe), but that’s the exception rather than the rule unless you’ve pre-arranged a taxi child seat when you booked your ride.

Every family has unique needs, but here are some of the best car seats for taxis by age: – Doona infant car seat (birth – 1 year old) – Combi Coccoro or Cosco Scenera NEXT DLX convertible car seats (1 – 2 years old) – Wayb Pico (2 – 4 years old, in-depth review here ) – Ride Safer Travel Vest (4 – 6 years old, in-depth review here ) – Bubblebum Inflatable Booster Seat (6+ years old, in-depth review here )

Every infant seat (except this one ) can be installed using the seatbelt alone, sometimes with a locking clip if you’re traveling outside of the United States and Canada. It’s very convenient to travel with a lightweight infant car seat and a compatible stroller.

Thank you so much for all this info! It is so helpful. I was wondering if the Ride Safer travel vest can be used on the airplane as well? I will be traveling to Europe with my 4 year old and we will be in and out of a lot of Taxi’s. Thank you!

Unfortunately at this time the vest is not FAA approved. FAA approval has been “coming soon” for several years, but hopefully they really mean it this time.

If your kiddo is at least ~40lbs you should be able to get away with the airplane seatbelt on its own.

Safe travels,

This Airport Was Just Named the Most Luxurious in the U.S.

The research even accounts for if an airport has a caviar bar.

just travel taxis

Angus Mordant/Getty Images

As any frequent traveler can tell you, flying can sometimes be a drag. Not the cruising comfortably at 35,000 feet part, but the getting through the airport part. Nightmarish parking, a lengthy line at check-in, the never-pleasant security line, and the search for your gate can all add up to an unpleasant experience before you even get to board. While we can't do anything about the airports that are due for a serious upgrade, we can at least point you to the airports that not only enhance the travel experience but make it.

In February, All Clear Travel Insurance unveiled the findings of its research searching for the most luxurious airports in the world. To determine its rankings, the insurance service analyzed more than 1,800 airports, evaluating them on how many had a significant selection of passenger lounges available (minimum 10) via data by Loungebuddy, how many designer shops it has, and how many 4- and 5-star hotels are located nearby.

Each airport was also given a score on whether travelers could find a Champagne bar or caviar house too, because, you know, we all need that. After looking at all the airports the team shortlisted 69 and named New York City's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) as the most luxurious airport in the United States.

JFK ranked as the 11th most luxurious airport overall, scoring high marks for its high number of lounges (22) and for the high number of luxury stores across its terminals (16). However, it lost points because it lacks any high-end hotels nearby, giving it a total luxury score of 48 out of 100. This pales in comparison to the No. 1 pick, Dubai International Airport (DXB), which scored 83 out of 100.

Coming in a close second is the United Kingdom's Heathrow Airport (LHR), located in London with a score of 82 out of 100. Also in the top 5 are Hamad International Airport (DOH) in Qatar, Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) in France, and Sydney International Airport (SYD) in Australia. The only other U.S. airport to make the top 20 is California's Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) at No. 16.

See all the other airports to make the top 20 list at allcleartravel.co.uk .

Seattle Water Taxis: Everything You Need to Know & Things to Do At Their Destinations

Out of all the transportation methods available in Seattle, water transportation is perhaps the most fun option. Not only does water transportation let you skip the traffic on roads through the city and the crowded freeways but it also gives you a chance to sit back and soak up the gorgeous views of the waterways.

Although the ferry is the most well-known form of water transportation, Seattle also has water taxis that offer convenient routes that take passengers directly into Downtown Seattle . Below is an extensive guide of the water taxi routes and stations, how to get to the water taxis, their schedules and fares, and much more.

Water Taxi Routes in Seattle

Seattle Water Taxi

Seattle has two water taxi routes: one from West Seattle to Downtown Seattle and one from Vashon Island to Downtown Seattle. Each route has its own individual schedule. The West Seattle-Downtown Seattle route has different schedules on weekends whereas the Vashon Island-Seattle route has the same schedule for every weekday but has no weekend schedule.

The West Seattle-Downtown Seattle route takes 10 to 15 minutes to cross the water. The Vashon Island-Downtown Seattle route takes approximately 22 minutes to cross the water. The short crossing time makes both routes extremely convenient as both a means of travel and a way to enjoy the views of the water.

Water Taxi Stations

Seattle Water Taxi at Pier 50

Both routes connect to the Downtown Seattle water taxi station located on Pier 50. Known as Colman Dock, the water taxi station is located just next to the Bainbridge Island Ferry terminal right off of Alaskan Way. The Colman Dock terminal is a massive station capable of holding up to 500 passengers, all indoors to keep people out of the weather and complete with restrooms and elevated walkways.

The West Seattle station is known as the Seacrest Dock. It is located conveniently near public transit like buses and also has walkways for passengers and cyclists. Passengers can easily access places like Alki Beach from the dock as well as local restaurants, shops, and trails. Parking can be found at Seacrest Park or along Harbor Ave SW.

The Vashon Island station is simply called the Vashon Ferry Terminal. Owned and operated by the Washington State Ferries, the station has an indoor waiting area with restrooms, drink and snack vending machines, and a restaurant just outside by the base of the dock. Free parking is available a block away from the terminal.

Other Transportation Near The Water Taxi Stations

The West Seattle terminal is located near the 773 metro bus routes. Passengers can find a free DART shuttle at the West Seattle Junction and another free shuttle at the Admiral District Alki Ave SW. The Vashon Island terminal has access to the 118 and 119 metro bus routes. The Downtown Seattle terminal is near the Columbia St. and Alaskan Way bus stop, which is located just across the street from Pier 50.

How Much Does It Cost To Ride The Water Taxis

ORCA Card used in Seattle Transit

The cost of riding water taxis is paid in advance before boarding. Passengers are charged a one-way fare every time they use the water taxis. These fares can vary based on age and payment type. Generally speaking, paying with an ORCA card will be cheaper than other types of payment methods.

On all water taxi routes, youth passengers get to ride for free. Youth passengers are categorized as any person ages 18 or younger. There is no extra charge on either route for bringing bicycles on board the water taxis. Both water taxi routes do not accept reservations for seating.

Fares And Accepted Types Of Payment

Fares on each route are fairly inexpensive for a one-way ticket with the Vashon Island-Downtown Seattle route being the slightly more expensive of the two routes. The fares for a one-way ticket for the Vashon Island-Downtown Seattle route are as follows:

  • Adult (19 to 64 years old): $6.75 cash or ticket, $5.75 with ORCA
  • ORCA LIFT: $4.50 with ORCA
  • Senior (65+ years old) or Disabled: $3 cash, ticket, with ORCA
  • Youth (0 to 18 years old): Free
  • Bicycles: Free

The fares for a one-way ticket for the West Seattle-Downtown Seattle route are as follows:

  • Adult (19 to 64 years old): $5.75 cash or ticket, $5 with ORCA
  • ORCA LIFT: $3.75 with ORCA
  • Senior (65+ years old) or Disabled: $2.50 cash, ticket, with ORCA

There are multiple forms of payment that passengers can use to buy a ticket. The only type of payment that is absolutely not accepted is checks. The acceptable types of payment and how to use them are as follows:

  • Cash: Passengers can buy a ticket when entering the vessel; you must pay with the exact amount
  • ORCA Card: Cards must be loaded with a PugetPass or E-purse value. Simply tap the card on the card reader.
  • Ticket: Passengers can buy tickets from ticket vending machines at water taxi terminals. Simply place the ticket in the fare box when boarding. Tickets can be bought by using a credit or debit card.
  • Mobile App: You can download the Transit GO app to buy tickets. This is a contact-free payment option.
  • ORCA Passport: Similar to the ORCA Card, just tap your ORCA Passport on the reader. This passport will cover the full fare on a King County Water Taxi. U-PASS also functions the same way.

Water Taxi Schedules

Although both water taxi routes operate 7 days a week, their hours of operation are different and can even vary depending on the day of the week. There are also certain holidays during which neither route will be operating. It is important to understand the different schedules for each route before boarding the water taxis.

The West Seattle-Downtown Seattle Route

On Mondays through Thursdays, the schedule for this route is the same. Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays have different schedules. On certain days, the West Seattle-Downtown Seattle route will not operate at all.

Things to Do in Vashon Island

Point Robinson Lighthouse

Vashon Island is big – about half the size of the city of Seattle. Yet, it’s also rural and lightly populated. Across its 36 square miles, it has a little more than 10,000 residents and many vacation homes. It’s important to note that the Vashon Island Ferry Terminal is on the northern end of the island. That’s about a 5-mile drive to Vashon’s commercial district which has restaurants, bakeries, and shops. If you’re looking for things to do after a water taxi trip to Vashon, here are some ideas:

  • Go for a bike ride: With Vashon’s commercial district being about 5 miles from the ferry terminal, that’s a great distance to bike to. There are more than a dozen restaurants, coffee shops, and bakeries downtown. A couple of our favorites are Gravy, which has seasonal menus you can access on their website , Camp Colvos Brewing, and the Hardware Store Restaurant.
  • Plan a wine tour: Vashon Island is home to five wineries, two cideries, and a couple of breweries. If you want a short trip from the ferry, the Palouse Winery is located just 1.4 miles away on Vashon Highway.
  • Maury Island Marine Park: Maury Island is a longer commute, taking 30 minutes by car (or about 12 miles) from the ferry terminal, but it’s well worth the visit. The park has scenic beaches that are perfect for a warm summer day and trails across more than 320 acres of space.

Water Taxi Vessels

Each route has its own designated water taxi vessel. The MV Sally Fox and the MV Doc Maynard have been in operation since 2015 and have a capacity of 278 passengers. The MV Sally Fox operates the Vashon Island-Downtown Seattle route and the MV Doc Maynard runs on the West Seattle-Downtown Seattle route. The West Seattle-Downtown Seattle route has an additional smaller vessel, the Spirit of Kingston, that can hold up to 149 passengers.

TSA officers prevent man from bringing loaded handgun onto flight at Norfolk International Airport

just travel taxis

NORFOLK, Va. – Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers at Norfolk International Airport prevented a North Carolina resident from bringing his loaded handgun onto a flight on Sunday, April 7, just four days after TSA stopped another traveler with a firearm.

The  handgun was loaded with eight bullets, including one in the chamber and was the ninth firearm that TSA officers have intercepted at the checkpoint so far this year.

The gun was detected as the man entered the security checkpoint. The X-ray unit alerted on the carry-on bag, which required a closer inspection. The firearm was removed by the local police, who confiscated the weapon and cited the man on a weapons charge. TSA does not confiscate firearms; law enforcement officers do.

In addition to being criminally cited by police, the man also faces a stiff financial civil penalty for bringing a gun to a TSA security checkpoint. The penalty for carrying weapons can reach as high as $15,000, depending on the circumstances.

The case will be forwarded to the Norfolk Commonwealth’s Attorney for possible criminal prosecution.

“It appears that this traveler had packed his firearm in a gun case, however, he needed just a few more important steps before he could travel with it,” explained Robin “Chuck” Burke, TSA’s Federal Security Director for the airport. “He needed to ensure the firearm was unloaded, then taken the locked gun case to his airline to declare he wanted to fly with it. At that point, the airline representative would ensure that the firearm could be transported as checked baggage  Our TSA officers remain vigilant during this busy spring break travel season to help ensure everyone can travel safely.”

Firearms caught by TSA officers at Norfolk International Airport checkpoints, 2016 to 2024

Passengers are only permitted to travel with firearms in checked baggage.  Firearms must be unloaded then packed in a hard-sided locked case. The locked case must be taken to the airline check-in counter to be declared. TSA has details on how to properly travel with a firearm posted on its website .

Firearm possession laws vary by state and locality and gun owners have a duty to ensure they are not violating any local firearm laws. Additionally, contacting the respective airline could reveal any additional requirements for traveling with firearms and ammunition.

Bringing a gun to an airport checkpoint carries a federal civil penalty because TSA reserves the right to issue a civil penalty to travelers who have guns and gun parts with them at a checkpoint. Civil penalties for bringing a gun into a checkpoint can stretch into thousands of dollars, depending on mitigating circumstances. This applies to travelers with or without concealed gun carry permits because a concealed carry permit does not allow a firearm to be carried onto an airplane. The complete list of civil penalties is posted online . Additionally, if a traveler with a gun is a member of TSA PreCheck®, that individual will lose their TSA PreCheck privileges.

Last year, 6,735 firearms were caught at airport security checkpoints nationwide and 93 percent of them were loaded.

Unsure if an item should be packed in a carry-on bag, checked bag, either or neither? Download the free myTSA app , which has a handy “What can I bring?” feature that allows you to type in the item to find out if it can fly. Or ask on Twitter or Facebook Messenger at @AskTSA . Travelers may send a question by texting “Travel” to AskTSA (275-872).

This major cruise line operator just announced its biggest ship order ever

One of the world’s leading cruise operators unveiled its biggest ship order ever on Monday.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. will take delivery of eight ships between 2026 and 2036 across its three brands.

Norwegian Cruise Line will welcome four ships in 2030, 2032, 2034 and 2036, each with a capacity of close to 5,000 guests. The additions are subject to financing.

The vessels will follow the line’s previously announced Prima-Plus class vessels.

The upscale Oceania Cruises will take delivery of two 1,450-guest ships in 2027 and 2029, and luxury line Regent Seven Seas Cruises will add two ships in 2026 and 2029, each accommodating 850 passengers.

"This strategic new-ship order across all three of our award-winning brands provides for the steady introduction of cutting-edge vessels into our fleet and solidifies our long-term growth,” Harry Sommer, the company’s president and CEO, said in a news release . “It also allows us to significantly leverage our operating scale, strengthen our commitment to innovation and enhance our ability to offer our guests new products and experiences, all while providing opportunities to enhance the efficiency of our fleet.”

Specifics about the ships’ accommodations and amenities will be announced “in the coming months,” according to the release.

The company will also add a new multi-ship pier at its private Bahamas island, Great Stirrup Cay, scheduled for completion by late 2025. The pier will be able to accommodate two large ships at once.

Travel | google faces deluge of $10,000 incognito mode lawsuits after class-action deal, travel | travel troubleshooter: why won’t airbnb cover my hotel expenses they promised.

Author

DEAR TRAVEL TROUBLESHOOTER: I booked an Airbnb in Las Vegas recently. Just before I checked in, the host did a bait and switch, sending me to a different address from the one on the property listing. The new location was not clean and not comparable to the original listing. I also felt unsafe.

Christopher Elliott, the Travel Troubleshooter ...

I called Airbnb’s customer service that night and sent them some pictures and a video of the location. I spoke with a customer service representative who told me to book a hotel and assured me that Airbnb would reimburse me in full. She did this by phone and by email through the Airbnb platform.

I have sent the receipt for my hotel stay and parking, but Airbnb has not reimbursed me yet. It’s been almost a month since my trip. I think they should also compensate me for my stress and time at this point. Can you help me get a refund from Airbnb?

— David Tuttle, Grants Pass, Oregon

ANSWER: You should have received the rental you booked, not a replacement, and definitely not a lesser rental that made you feel unsafe. It looks like Airbnb agreed with you and offered to cover your hotel expenses.

Airbnb addresses this under its AirCover guarantee, which says that if your listing is “significantly different” than advertised, and your host can’t resolve the issue, then Airbnb will help you find a similar place. “If a similar place isn’t available or you’d prefer not to rebook, we’ll give you a full or partial refund,” it adds.

I reviewed the correspondence between you and Airbnb. I’m concerned that Airbnb appears to offer to cover your hotel, but later changes its tune and offers you a coupon for a future stay. An Airbnb credit was a generous offer, but only if combined with Airbnb’s original offer to cover your hotel expenses.

You could have appealed this to one of the executive contacts at Airbnb, who I list on my consumer advocacy site, Elliott.org . I should note that your case was really confusing. Airbnb opened multiple threads with you without closing them, which added to the complexity of this case and maybe delayed your resolution.

When a representative offers something like covering your hotel expenses, you have to make sure that you get it in writing (which you did) and that it’s noted in your reservation. It looks like fixing this would have required someone from Airbnb to manually review all the threads and figure out who authorized the refund.

The other thing that may have been a factor in the slow response was that you requested additional money for pain and suffering. While that’s certainly understandable, it’s typically not something a company would do unless ordered by a court. I have also seen requests like this delay a refund.

You reached out to my advocacy team for help. I asked Airbnb about your money. Airbnb called you, and after some negotiation, it offered you $1,674, which is the cost of the hotel stay, minus the parking fee. You accepted Airbnb’s offer.
