What Makes A Cat Carrier Suitable For Car Travel?

Before we go through each cat carrier on our list, I think it’s important to understand what criteria our picks were based on.

I also believe that this section will help you get a better idea of what you need to look for in a carrier and prioritize certain features to get the best result.

So, let’s get started!

Soft vs Hard-Sided Carrier

When I was searching for cat carriers for my cats, I realized that there are two distinct categories fighting for the top spot, soft carriers and hard carriers.

There are definitely both pros and cons to each category depending on the design and the manufacturer.

Hard carriers are very sturdy, and they’re built to withstand your cat’s claws. They are easy to clean, and they don’t absorb bad smells which makes them a long-lasting investment. Most  veterinary centers  also prefer hard-sided carriers with a top opening that can be latched securely into place.  Additionally,  ASPCA  states that your kitty might be smart enough to get through the zipper enclosure.

This doesn’t mean that carriers made of soft materials aren’t good, I think soft carriers can be extremely versatile in their design, and the quality of the manufacturing seems to have improved over the last years, with locking zippers and steel support.

Some also offer additional pockets for documents, they’re much easier to secure to the car seat and they can fold flat when you no longer need them.

Soft carriers can also make a long-distance trip more comfortable and if the road ahead is bumpy, your kitty will be surrounded by soft walls instead of hard plastic. These walls are usually made of soft mesh material, which makes it easier to see how your kitty is doing while driving.

As we’ll discuss further in this article, the safest cat carriers specifically for driving that have been crash tested are soft carriers. When it came to hard plastic carriers only hard crates designed for dogs passed the same tests.

Taking in the safety, and design versatility, you’ll see that our list has plenty of soft carriers that have these features, but that doesn’t mean we haven’t added hard carriers since they also bring their own pros to the table.

If you go for a hard plastic carrier, make sure that the top and bottom are securely attached, and the handle can handle your cat’s weight. Depending on the season you might want to add soft fleece blankets to keep your cat warm. They are also easy to clean in case your kitty has a toilet accident.

With soft carriers, you don’t necessarily need to worry about cold temperatures, but they might not be the best choice if you’re traveling during summer. It’s also important to remember that, unlike the hard plastic, the soft carriers are more suitable for calm kitties.

A proper-sized carrier is a requirement no matter how far or close is your driving destination. ASPCA states that a cat carrier should be a comfortable space for your kitty to be able to stand, sit, lie and turn around. 

Usually, a cat carrier should be one and a half times larger than the size of your cat, and you need to consider all dimensions including length, width, and height.

I also want to add that the VCA  hospitals  suggest that it’s best to “get the right size cat carrier. If your cat dreads going into the small confines of a carrier, consider getting an oversized, top-loading cat carrier so your cat doesn’t need to squeeze through a narrow door.”

While your cat’s carrier needs to follow these requirements for short-distance trips like a visit to the vet, but for long-distance car travel, even a regular-sized carrier might not be enough.

Let’s not forget that this carrier might have to fit both your kitty as well as their food and water bowl and depending on the longevity of the trip a litter box. So, this means that you will have to look for a carrier with large enough dimensions, so your kitty doesn’t feel confined.

You will also need to consider the space available in your car . Some cars have enough room for a full backseat-sized carrier, but if you’re bringing additional personal belongings or you simply don’t have a back seat to spare then you need to consider a smaller option.

Don’t forget to weigh your kitty and look at the weight capacity of the product before getting the carrier. Cats come in different shapes and sizes and certain carriers no matter how big might not be able to handle your kitty’s weight.

If you’re worried that you’ll struggle with a larger carrier instead of choosing a hard plastic you can go for a soft carrier. More so, a zipped carrier will work much better, because with careful maneuvering you can squeeze your hand through and have better access to changing your cat’s food and water bowl, as well as the litter box, even petting them.

A hard plastic or metal door will have to open completely as well as the carriers with just one large top opening and they might give your scared kitty the opportunity of getting out running away from you .

Portability

Aside from weight capacity you also need to consider the weight of the carrier itself since it will also affect you. I mean you’ll be the one carrying the carrier and your fluffball from your house to the car and back again.

In this case, you might want to consider a backpack carrier that can also be attached safely to your cat’s seat. If you have a curious kitty, you might even take them with you outside of the car for a walk during your travel breaks.

There are also strollers and carriers that function both as bags with a handle and travel bags that you can push on rollers. This way you don’t have to rely on someone helping you with your carrier and you can feel more independent and flexible.

Safety Features

I think one of the most important features in a carrier that’s suitable for car travel is seat belt loops. Especially during long-distance travels, you’ll need to be able to secure the carrier to the seat through belts or straps, or any safety mechanism the carrier offers.

This means that the carrier will be firmly placed preferably in the back seat, without sliding from side to side or falling off.

Another thing that can help you understand how safe a carrier is for car rides is whether it was tried and tested for this specific reason.

Looking through reviews also helps see whether other cat parents are happy with how safe the product is.

I’d also suggest that you go for a carrier with seat belt loops even if you simply are visiting the vet, especially if you live in an area where there are bumpy roads. This way you can avoid accidents.

The last thing you want is to see your cat jump out of the carrier and be free to wreak havoc in your car.

Easy To Clean

There are plenty of reasons a carrier can get messy. Some cats poop when they’re scared and this can happen before the vet visit, after, or during a long-distance car trip.

It’s also possible that your cat could get sick in their carrier, as Tammy Hunter, DVM, explains “most motion sickness cases in cats are caused primarily by the stress and anxiety associated with travel.” This is especially true for cats that travel by car once or twice a year for their vet visits.

Aside from messy and stinky accidents according to Blue Cross For Pets “If you have already tried to put your cat into a carrier and they’ve been scared or nervous while doing it, they will sometimes release stress hormones.”

This all means that you’ll need to clean the carrier after each travel, long or short. If you find that your kitty has made a mess the moment you step your foot into the vet’s office, you should know that with a hard carrier cleaning the mess will be quick and easy simply by wiping the hard plastic with pet-friendly wet wipes , and your kitty doesn’t have to travel back home in their own mess.

While some soft carriers can be machine washed they are not as easy to clean right at that moment. Of course, you could also use bedding that you can remove and wash but if it reaches the soft material of the carrier it’s most likely going to absorb the mess, especially in the corners and the soft walls.

If your cat tends to poop or throw up when stressed during car travels I’d suggest getting a plastic carrier, but make sure to look for one with a smooth interior surface and minimal nooks where dirt can accumulate.

Room For Food and Water

When you’re considering the size and dimensions of your cat’s carrier, especially if you’re planning on taking your feline companion on a long trip, you need to think big.

It doesn’t have to be humongous of course, but it does need to have enough space for your cat’s food, water, and litter.

If you’re going to stay somewhere for a few nights during your trip choose a carrier that can expand. This way you don’t have to let your cat roam the hotel room, since for certain cats this will mean more stress, the need to mark this new territory, and they’ll most likely hide.

Of course, leaving your cat in a carrier overnight isn’t ideal, but you can give them more room, and add the litter box, and anything else they need to feel more comfortable, by choosing an expendable carrier or at least one that’s spacious enough for all these necessities.

Long-Distance Travel vs Short Car Trips

It’s certain that one thing that will affect your carrier choice is whether it’s suitable for car travel. But even in this situation, everyone might have different expectations simply because they intend to use the carrier for different types of travel.

For All Travels

Some of you might need a carrier that can work for short car trips whenever your kitty needs a veterinarian check-up, as well as long-distance travel through car transportation. You might also want this carrier to fit the size standards of airlines.

Another safety feature you might want to consider when looking for a travel carrier is whether it has been crash tested.

I’m guessing some of you, myself included, didn’t even know that carrier crash testing was a thing, but in 2015, the Center for Pet Safety ran some extensive testings to see which carriers can actually survive well in a crash.

During these testings, they made sure to be inclusive since pet owners have different economical backgrounds. That’s why they tried a variety of carriers at different price levels.

If you’ve ever seen car crash testing videos with human dummies, then you can imagine that carrier testing is quite similar. From testings made on different carriers and crates, the important feature that helped them rank at the top was the belts that secured the carrier to the car.

What Is the Safest Way To Transport Your Cat On A Long Car Ride?

Now that we’ve gone through the list of our best cat carriers and perhaps you already have your mind set on one of them, it’s time to think about the journey itself.

Carriers are a crucial part of traveling with your kitty, but there are also other things you need to pay attention to, more so when you’re planning a long road trip.

Consider Their Needs

It’s not always easy to imagine that cats can leave the comfort of their home and be positive about it, but Tammy Hunter, DVM , is here to let us know that “cats can be very lively travel companions if we take the time to create a positive experience for them.”

The first step you need to take to create this positive association is by turning the carrier into a happy space. Don’t keep it hidden until the day of the trip, instead treat the carrier as a full-time cat bed . This means placing a cozy blanket full of familiar scents that they love to knead , as well as toys and some catnip if your kitty is into it.

Another great piece of advice from Dr. Hunter is to keep your cat’s food in individual containers so you can easily feed them during the trip. Use familiar dishes both for the food and water and I’d even suggest adding a bit of their old litter into the portable litter box to help them feel at home.

She also adds that if your car trip will take you less than a day you can withhold breakfast from your cat to avoid vomiting and feed them the moment you reach your destination. This of course won’t work for longer trips, during which your kitty will need food and water for hydration especially if it’s hot outside.

You also need to make sure you’re making regular stops to check out your kitty. Perhaps you’ll notice your cat panting, in which case you’ll have to replenish their water and perhaps turn the AC on.

The number of car breaks you’ll  need to take will depend on the longevity of the trip if it’s day or night, and the individual cat, but pet experts recommend that “y ou should stop every two hours to allow your dog or cat to relieve itself and stretch its legs. ”

Another thing you need to remember is never leave your cat alone inside the car, first of all, it’s not safe even if you have the heating or A/C on and secondly it can be considered illegal in certain states of the U.S. and possibly in other countries of the E.U.

Of course, you might have to fill up your car or run to the toilet for a brief stop. In this case, you could leave a note on your car, that you’ll be back in a few minutes, perhaps leave a phone number as well and make sure the heating or A/C are on.

Consider Their Privacy

Cats have different personalities and while some might enjoy the view from their carrier, for others this could be a source of anxiety.

If your kitty is one of the cats that prefer to be in a dark carrier with minimal visibility then you can consider a carrier that has roller blinds, or instead use a light breathable fabric to cover the carrier.

For those of you who want to embark on a road trip with your kitty during the summer, covering the carrier is important during the day, or you can use a window shade to keep them safe from driving in direct sunlight for long hours.

On the other hand, some cats prefer fully translucent windows in their carrier so they can enjoy the view around them, and be able to look at their owner. These kitties can benefit from multiple entry points that can offer complete visibility of their surroundings, plus these carriers also have great ventilation.

Consider Their Safety

We’ve already talked about the crash-tested carriers that are the ultimate safe option . But not everyone can afford it, and even if you do there are other things that you need to pay attention to in order to make the carrier a safe place for your kitty when it arrives.

First, make sure that the carrier is escape-proof. Whether you go for a soft or hard carrier make sure you check the zippers, all the seams, or the buckles and the plastic sides. All these parts need to be sturdy, with no tears or breaks.

Then I’d suggest you give the carrier a test run with your kitty. Once your cat is comfortable with their new carrier, take them for a few rides around the block before the big journey.

This way you’ll have a chance to test out the seatbelt loops or any other method with which the carrier can be belted into the backseat. You’ll also be able to see if your kitty feels comfortable in it and whether the carrier offers proper ventilation.

I think a good carrier is an important part of traveling with your kitty, but even the greatest cat carrier can’t replace the importance of cat-friendly traveling practices!

Do I Have To Worry About Pet Carrier Airline Requirements?

This will heavily depend on your future plans. I personally use my cats’ carriers once or twice a year when I take them to the vet, and when they were younger I used to also bring them with me to my parent’s home on Holidays, which was a two-hour car drive.

I never had to consider airline requirements, so I went for cozy carriers that offered more space. If you’re like me then you can also look for a carrier without being restricted by certain airline regulations and their sizing.

For those of you that go on road trips occasionally and take your feline companion with you, but you also want to be flexible in case you need to fly then it’s best you look for a carrier that does follow airline sizing requirements for pet carriers.

A trolley sleeve secures the cat carrier to the handle of your rolling luggage, and separate latches fit a seat belt to hold this securely onto a car's seat. It fits pets up to 18 pounds, making it good for large cats. It's a soft-sided carrier on the bigger side (roughly 18" by 10") so though it meets Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requirements for airplane travel, real-world reports say it does not fit under all airplane seats unless you squish it down a bit.

Only the top, one side and the front have mesh panels — if you have a scared cat, the less it sees the better, so that's a help. A privacy screen rolls down on the side if your cat wants to see even less. This bargain is one of the most popular cat carriers on Amazon with more than 24,000 five-star ratings. It features mesh on four sides and zippered entrances on the top and the front. It has a light steel frame, so it does not fold flat, which makes it easier to get the cat inside, but doesn't help with storage. The solid back side has a zippered pocket for holding treats or paperwork from the vet.

Our Lab pros like that this comes with two inserts. One is hard, smooth and wipeable and it can give the bag a steady “floor.” The other insert has a zip-off, washable fuzzy cover for comfort. Several online reviewers whose cats had accidents in this tote report that they washed the liner and put the entire carrier in the washing machine on delicate with cold water, then let the carrier air-dry — and the smell was gone.

Many use this to get a cat up to 16 pounds to and from the vet, but it also fits under the seat in many airplane cabins. The brand says the shoulder strap doubles as a car seat belt but we did not test that. A few Lab notes: We found that the dimensions of the medium tote are smaller than the ones listed on Amazon. The buckle that attaches the shoulder strap to the bag is plastic, and so is the loop it hooks into, which helps keep cost down but makes this less durable over time. It also has no feet on the bottom, so it rests directly on the floor, which can wear the fabric down with repeated use.

Not only can this hold a large cat up to 25 pounds, but the SportPet carrier is among the easiest to load a cat into thanks to the extra-wide side opening . And this comes recommended by a vet . “I have this carrier for my own cat, and I am all for it as a veterinarian,” says Megan Conrad , M.B.B.S., who works for Wellhaven Pet Health outside of Portland, Oregon. “I appreciate how it opens because most of the time it gives me enough room to do an exam while keeping the cat in the carrier, which makes the cat feel safer.”

As much as we recommend this one for vet visits, it's not made for long-haul travel. It doesn't meet airline requirements nor does it fit under an airplane seat, and it has no special straps for a car. But we love that it folds flat for storage, and we appreciate that the hard-sided carrier can be rinsed clean. The cozy bed can be run through the washing machine and dryer. If you're mostly just taking a scaredy cat or a big cat to doctor visits, this is a fantastic choice.

The medium size of this carrier (about 17" by 11") as well as the small size (about 15" by 10") are both airline-approved and reviewers have been able to fit this in an airline cabin better than most. It holds its shape thanks to a springy wire frame that can be squished down a bit for a better fit under a seat. The medium size holds a cat up to 16 pounds, and the small holds a cat (or likely a kitten) up to 8 pounds. There's also a seatbelt safety strap for securing this in a car.

Both the top and side open nice and wide, and we had success getting our 15-pound tester cat, Helen, in through the side. There's a thin fuzzy mat that holds to the bottom of the carrier with hook-and-loop strips so it doesn't shift around, which is a nice touch. Carry it by hand or use the shoulder strap that attaches with strong metal buckles. There are two zippers at each opening so you can get it quickly closed.

The polyester fabric can be wiped clean. With a little bit of work, this cat carrier can be folded down almost flat for storage. Three sides are mesh; the top and one end are not. The right size cat carrier will allow your cat to stand up and turn around while inside. It should also be appropriately matched to the weight of your cat. Don’t choose a cat carrier that isn’t rated to hold your cat’s weight (or the combined weight of your pets if you plan to transport more than one cat at a time). At the same time, animal behavior specialist Salant says that an overly large carrier isn’t necessarily better. “You want your cat to feel secure, and a carrier that is too large might work against that,” says Salant.

Regarding the best type of cat carrier, there are hard-sided and soft-sided carriers to choose from. Salant says, “I personally like hard sided carriers vs. soft sided ones to provide an extra layer of safety while in transit.” A hard-sided carrier provides more robust protection for your cat, but soft-sided cat carriers might be more flexible for stowing under an airplane seat or for storing when not in use. Some soft-sided cat carriers also offer multiple configurations for carrying, making the carrier more comfortable or convenient to carry for a distance.

A cat carrier is the safest way to keep your pet secure during travel. But to increase your cat’s comfort and reduce stress levels, you should put in some work to prepare your pet for travel ahead of time. Help your cat view the carrier as a positive place by offering treats or food inside the carrier while at home. Some cats come to view a carrier as a cozy hideaway and will readily enter the carrier if it’s left out at home.

Once your cat is comfortable entering the carrier and can tolerate the door being closed, take a trial run in the car. Keep initial rides short so that your cat will be accustomed to the sights and sounds in the car. This could also prevent car trips from becoming associated strictly with anxiety-inducing occasions like vet visits.

Most people shop for a cat carrier to take their cat somewhere, but it’s important to consider the mode of transportation as you compare options. Cat carriers for the car should have a means of securing the carrier using the seat belt to keep the carrier in place during travel.

If you’ll be taking your cat in the cabin of an airplane with you, the carrier will need to meet specific requirements regarding size as set by the airline to ensure that the carrier fits under the seat in front of you. If you’re shipping your cat in a cargo hold, Salant, an animal behavior specialist, points out that “there are very specific hard-sided crate regulations you will have to meet before the airline accepts a live animal into cargo.” When it comes to a cat carrier for airline travel, your best bet is to verify dimensions and other requirements with the airline you’ll be traveling on and then find a cat carrier that matches those specifications.

The best cat carrier for most is one with a rigid design because it provides a cat with a defined interior space. Our top choice among the hard-sided options we tested is the Petmate Two-Door Top-Load Pet Kennel, which has a traditional front door plus a top-loading door, both with gates that securely shut with a dual-spring-loaded latch.

The unwavering structure provided by this carrier will help your cat feel secure—a top priority—but only if you can first get your cat inside. The top door simplifies the obstacle of getting a cat into a carrier by limiting their opportunity to wriggle out before the door is fully shut. And from our experience, we've learned that most vets prefer a cat carrier with a top door because it makes their job easier. Here are more ways you can reduce stress on your cat while traveling .

Like any hard-sided cat carrier, the Petmate Two-Door is big and boxy, making it cumbersome to lug around, but it's also surprisingly light, thanks to thin plastic—though it never feels flimsy—and lots of ventilation holes, which keep it airy inside. The larger 24-inch model weighs 6.4 pounds and the 19-inch version weighs 3.8 pounds, without cats inside. And even with an adult cat inside, we found it relatively easy to take in and out of cars or walk short distances.

Our only structural concern is the handle, which is attached to the top door, meaning the weight of the carrier puts pressure on the hinges and steel latch. But while we noted it as a potential design flaw, the door has been reliably secure through more than a year of use. The steel wire latch to the top door is sometimes a little hard to align, but it's also easy to tell when you've securely closed it.

The Petmate Two-Door is made from recycled materials, with surfaces that are easy to wipe clean. The larger option is designed to carry cats up to 20 pounds, making it appropriate for use with most adult cats. Though it's not recommended, in a pinch we were able to safely use the carrier with two adult cats for a quick trip to the vet. Another of our testers used the Petmate carrier as a temporary den for a foster cat.

Testers first documented the ease of setup and their cat's initial reaction to the carrier, taking photos along the way. Testers then evaluated each carrier's quality for themselves, exploring features and functionality, recording their thoughts, and answering a bevy of questions.

After three weeks of use incorporating the carrier into their routine, each tester provided detailed feedback and numerical scores across four categories: performance, portability, quality, and value. Additionally, each cat carrier will remain with the tester for ongoing insights.

Equipped with this first-hand information, we ranked and categorized our top picks to simplify your search for the purr-fect cat carrier to suit your needs, habits, and preferences.

Look for easy-to-clean surfaces, recommends Registered Veterinary Technician and professional dog trainer (KPA-CTP) Jaime Lyn Bast. "Lingering odors will be offensive to your cat," she says. Check to see if any removable fabric or foam padding is machine-washable.

“The safest carrier is made of sturdy plastic with access doors on the top and the side. A rigid carrier protects your cat from any external impact,” Bast told The Spruce Pets. “Cats are easily stressed by jostling and disturbances during transport, and hard-sided cat carriers make it easier to maintain consistent, level support."

The carrier must be large enough for your cat to stand up and turn around comfortably, but small enough that they feel secure and avoid excessive movement during the ride she says.

The ideal cat carrier should also have easy-to-use latches or zippers, according to Bast. "You should be able to open the crate easily with one hand."

Opaque Sides

"A visual barrier helps your cat feel protected from outside threats," says Bast. If you have a rigid carrier cage with a lot of places to look out, can also try covering it with a sheet or towel to help your cat feel secure.

“Ideally, you should train your cat to become comfortable with their carrier by leaving it out and placing blankets, toys, and treats inside. Once your cat forms a positive association with the carrier, you can entice them with treats to willingly enter,” suggests Bast. “However, if you have not had a chance to train your cat, or they do not voluntarily enter their carrier, you will have to place them inside."

Cats commonly resent their carriers due to pain and fear associated with improper loading she says. Always handle your cat gently and calmly to prevent panic. "When lifting your cat, support their body to avoid causing fear or discomfort. Gently lower your cat inside the carrier from above or, if using the side door, guide them in backwards (i.e., rear-end first). If your cat struggles, you can wrap them snugly in a towel, slide them inside like a swaddled baby, and then unwrap them.”

“Your cat will be comfortable in their carrier if they identify it as an extension of their territory,” notes Bast. “To achieve this, the carrier must be a predictable part of the home and an attractive hangout for your cat." Here are her training tips:

• Place the crate near your cat’s favorite resting spot.

• Remove the top and door initially, if necessary.

• Place a cozy blanket inside the carrier, sprayed with a synthetic feline pheromone to attract and calm your cat.

• Periodically place toys and treats inside the carrier for your cat to discover. 

• Feed your cat near, and then inside the carrier.

• Close the door briefly with your cat inside, then open the door.

“Gradually increase the time your cat spends in the carrier, so long as they remain calm,” says Bast. “If your cat panics, take a step back and progress more slowly.”

To help your cat remain calm during veterinary visits:

• Do not feed your cat in the hours preceding a car ride to prevent nausea.

• Drape a towel misted with feline pheromones over the carrier to create a visual barrier.

• Keep the carrier elevated on a chair or counter, and away from curious dogs.

“Cats should never travel loose in the car," explains Bast. "Unrestrained cats may distract the driver, impede driving, and risk severe injury, escape, or death in an accident." It’s all good and well to want to purchase the biggest carrier for your cat to ensure that they’re comfortable. But, one important factor to also consider other than your cat’s comfort is whether or not the carrier will actually fit into your car.

Sometimes bigger isn’t always better, so ensure that you have enough space for something that will be easy to transport.

The Shape & Design of the Carrier

The shape and design of a car carrier for a cat are one of the most important factors to consider before purchasing one. The carrier should ideally be large enough for your cat to lie down and stand up. However, the carrier shouldn’t be so large that your car doesn’t feel secure.

On the other hand, it shouldn’t be too small so that your cat feels claustrophobic and becomes anxious while traveling. Choosing a carrier that has expandable sections that double or triples in size is your best bet because you can customize it to your pet’s needs.

Cat carriers come in all sorts of materials such as plastic, polyester, and mesh. The material you pick is key because it often helps with ventilation and most importantly — your cat’s comfort.

It’s wise to pick a carrier that has breathable material, and that is also lightweight and washable for easy maintenance.

Luggage Straps

Luggage straps are a huge convenience factor. They make it easy to transport your cat. If possible, pick one with padding so that you can slip it over your shoulder for an easy hands-free experience.

Another plus about luggage straps on car cat carriers is that they also double up as car seat belts. So, you can travel peacefully knowing that your cat is comfortable yet secure.

Interior Safety Tether

So before you embark on your journey, leave the cat carrier out so that they can familiarize themselves with it and get comfortable. But believe it or not, if a cat is properly acclimated and conditioned to riding in a car, they will actually learn to really love it. And you will too!

During the summer months and around the holidays, many of us plan or go on family vacations, and more commonly, families are including their furry feline. The summer is also a busy time for people buying and selling homes, which sometimes means a long-distance move.

Hopefully, your cat is young or has not had a traumatic experience in the car, making your upcoming road trip more viable. Don’t despair if this is not the case; even “more mature cats” can be taught new car riding tricks.

Getting your cat ready for a road trip

Step 1: get your kitty to love their carrier..

After all, unrestrained cats can be a distraction, interfering with your ability to steer or brake, and even become a dangerous projectile in the event of a crash or sudden stop. Like in this case of a cat loose in the car, distracting the driver and causing three accidents! In order to make restraint stress-less for your kitty and yourself, spend some time training your cat to love their carrier before the big travel day arrives.

Step 2: Get your cat to love the car.

Now that your kitty loves their carrier, it’s time to get them loving the car, too! Here are some steps to help you do that. Pro Tip: This car acclimation step is best done with two people … one to drive the car, the other to pet, praise, and treat kitty! That said, it can be done with one person, too, but very carefully.

• Take kitty out to the car, in their carrier.
• With the car parked and the doors and windows closed, sit in the back seat with your cat in their carrier. Partially open one of the carrier doors to get your hand in to play with your cat, pet them, praise them, and give them treats. (Caution: For your own safety and that of your cat, avoid doing this type of in-car training when the weather is too hot or too cold.)
• Once kitty seems settled in and happy in their carrier in the car, place an interactive, treat/kibble-dispensing toy in their carrier with them (the Egg-Cersizer and the SlimCat are great choices ).

• Caution: If your car is parked in your garage while you’re doing this acclimation for your cat, either ensure that your garage door is open or move your car out of the garage and onto the street or driveway. Carbon monoxide is very dangerous for both of you!
• Once your cat is comfortable with the sound and vibration of the engine, it’s time to take some short trips. You don’t want to overdo it here — just go down the street initially, then progress to a block or two, and then gradually extend the distance of the drives. Also, if you frequently drive with your windows open, try some of these "test" drives with the windows down for a bit to see if the sound of the air passing by and the changing air pressures are OK for kitty. Never push these drives further than your cat is comfortable with. Also, be sure to drive calmly and go easy on the gas pedal and brakes. Note: This step will be best with more than one person in the car so that someone can continue to monitor, soothe, and play with kitty while the other person does the driving and focuses on the road.
• Continue to do these steps each day or every few days, and kitty will soon be more than happy to join for car rides! Note: Since each cat and each situation are different, it could take anywhere from a few days of this type of training to several months for an individual cat to love car travel.

Still using the cardboard carrier your cat came home from the shelter in? Here are some of my favorite cat carriers for car travel.

Carriers for around town and shorter trips

These can also be used for longer trips with a leash-trained cat , as you won't need the extra space of the ones linked further below to put a litter box in the carrier with them. It's best to choose a carrier that has an opening at the top, as this often makes it easier and less stressful for everybody when getting them in and out when traveling or visiting the vet. The options linked below all have easy "top access."

Sleepypod carriers: The Mobile Pet Bed (this mobile pet bed may not work for flying on all airlines) and the Air In-Cabin Carrier are truly exceptional and beautifully crafted carriers, and Sleepypod takes pet travel safety very seriously . They do their own crash testing (at the standard set for child safety restraints) on their products and also received excellent marks in the Center for Pet Safety's crash testing studies. They're a bit pricier, but if you can swing it, they're well worth the money!

Sherpa carrier : Another good choice with a long track record of being an excellent and versatile cat carrier, both in the car and when flying.

Amazon Basics two-door, top-load pet kennel : This is a hard-sided carrier that has easy open/close latches (rather than nuts and bolts) to secure top to bottom, as well as a top access door.

Take note that if you want to use your carrier for flying, make sure the size of your hard carrier fits in your airline's under-seat regulations, as the hard carriers aren't as "flexible" as the soft-sided ones when going under the seat.

Cat carriers for longer road trips

Siivton 4-sided carrier : This carrier has expandable sides making this soft-sided carrier a little more spacious for your kitty than a traditional carrier. It doesn't really have enough room for you to include a litter box for your kitty within the carrier so something to consider.

It is an "extra space" option though for car travel that also has an "airline approved" claim, unlike the portable cage (above).

• Don’t feel like doing it DIY, or don’t have the time? Get an awesome pre-fab kitty condo instead! We know of a veterinarian who used one on a cross-country move and their cats loved it. Note: While these kitty condo options will likely help make travel less stressful and more comfortable for your kitty, they do introduce some new safety risks for them (falling from higher shelves or having shelves fall on them in the event of an accident or sudden stop) and perhaps even for you, depending on how/if you secure it within your vehicle. Please take these cautions into consideration should you select one of these kitty condo options. In order to make restraint stress-less for your kitty and yourself, spend some time training your cat to love their carrier before the big travel day arrives.

Car ride logistics with cats — where to go 'potty'

Jumping right down to “business,” … depending on the duration of your travel adventures with kitty and where you’re winding up, you’re going to have to deal with potty planning and bathroom breaks. This is the case both when you’re on the road and when you get to your hotel or wherever your destination is. You can help your cat take care of business on the road in a few different ways.

First, get them a good travel litter box, a litter they like, and (perhaps) even a litter attractant, and then get them used to using this set-up before you ever even need to use the car.

A good travel litter box will be large enough for your cat to fit in and comfortably do their business in, yet small enough to fit in their carrier (see recommended larger car cat carriers above).

If your trip isn’t too far and their carrier isn’t large enough to fit a litter box, your travel litter box for use in the hotel can be a bit larger. The travel litter box should also be waterproof, easy to clean, and collapsible (for easier storage), yet sturdy enough so as to not collapse on kitty when they’re doing their thing in it. There are also disposable litter box options available!

Recommended litter boxes for travel with cats

There are collapsible options ( Necoichi and PetIsFam ) or disposable ones ( Nature's Miracle or Kitty Sifter ). Given that you and your cat’s litter box will be in fairly close quarters, it’s a good idea to go with a litter that’s got good odor control and low dust potential.

While it might be tempting to get a fragranced litter, recognize that the fragrance could actually irritate your cat’s nose and lungs, stressing them out and making it less likely that they’ll actually use their litter box! Below are some recommended cat litters, as well as a recommended cat litter attractant, which sometimes is needed to help a cat remember to use their box, especially in a time of change, like travel.

Recommended litters for travel with cats

All of these litters are considered low-dust, are easily scoopable, and all have excellent absorbency and odor control. The first two ( Boxiecat and Dr. Elsey’s ) are clay-based, the third ( World’s Best ) is corn-based, in case your cat (or you) don’t like clay litter. I’m also including the recommended cat litter attractant in the list, as well as a scoop and items for used litter containment, as those will be important, too. The antimicrobial scoop and caddy is helpful when traveling, so the scoop isn’t laying on your car interior itself!

And depending on the size of your car, how much space you’ve got available, how long your trip is, and how averse you are to having any smell or chance of spillage, you may want to consider the excellent Litter Genie used cat litter storage system. Note: This Litter Genie also comes with the bags, as well as a litter scoop and holder! If you want something smaller than the Litter Genie, you can do the simple, sealable bucket (don't forget the lid !) and some tall kitchen garbage bags.

Is your cat used to doing their business outside , or you really don’t want the smell of cat litter and the stuff that winds up in it in your car, or there’s just no room for a litter box in your cat’s carrier? Then, depending on the length of your car trip, you’ll have to make proper bathroom stops for your cat. This is most safely done, though, if you take the time to leash-train your cat well in advance of your travel day! Don’t worry it can be done! Here’s our article on how to leash-train a cat . And another important precaution for cats that you’ll be leash walking and just traveling with in general … have them microchipped at your vet, and ensure that your contact information associated with the microchip is up-to-date !

Speaking about “doing business,” … what about if YOU have to go? What should you do with your cat?

If the temperatures aren’t too hot or too cold to have to worry about leaving your cat in the car, just leave them in their carrier and go about your business. Just try not to take too long. It's usually safe between about 40–65 degrees F (4–18 degrees C), though every cat and every situation will be different, so use this as a rough guide.

Talk to your vet about more specific safe temperature ranges for your cat based on your cat's age, breed (smushed face?), and any chronic medical conditions they may have or medications they may be on. If the temperatures are outside of that range, though, you’re going to have to take some precautions when making your own pit stops (and this includes for meals). In many cases, it’ll be possible for you to bring your cat into the bathroom with you in their carrier! This is the easiest solution if it’s possible and practical.

If it’s over the high end of the temperature range and you can’t bring kitty in with you, take some steps to ensure their comfort and safety when in the car:

• Do your bathroom break at a place where you don’t have to go into a big shop or mall to find and use the bathroom. Gas stations and rest stops along the side of the road are usually good options. Coffee shops often are, too!
• If you have an extra set of car keys with you, leave the car on and the air conditioner running and lock the doors behind you. You’ll be happier to get back into a cool car, too! Caution: This can help a lot, but be aware that car engines and air conditioner compressors can and do fail, leading to excessively hot temperatures building up in the car quickly.
• If leaving the car and A/C running isn’t possible or practical, pre-cool the car the best you can by running the air conditioner on high for several minutes before you get out.
• Park in the most well-shaded spot you can find.
• Park with your front windshield facing the sun and put up a reflective windshield sun shade like this one .
• Cracking the windows doesn’t make a huge difference, but it also doesn’t hurt (so long as your cat is securely in their carrier and there’s no danger of someone reaching in your car and stealing your stuff).
• Make sure kitty has plenty of water.
• Move their carrier from on the back seat to the floor in front of the back seat. Since hot air rises, it should be cooler on the floor.
• Be as quick with your stop as possible. If it’s a food break you’re taking, come back and check on your cat frequently (like every 10 minutes or so, just to be safe).

If it’s under the low end of the temperature range and you can’t bring kitty in with you, take some steps to ensure their comfort and safety when in the car:

• If you have an extra set of car keys with you, leave the car on and the heater running and lock the doors behind you. You’ll be happier to get back into a warm car, too! Caution: This can help a lot, but be aware that car engines and heater compressors can and do fail, leading to cold temperatures building up in the car quickly.
• If leaving the car and heater running isn’t possible or practical, pre-warm the car by turning up the heater to high (if it isn’t already) for several minutes before you get out.
• Add a nice cozy blanket or fleece to your cat’s carrier for them to snuggle up and be warm with. Pro Tip: If it’s a fleece or blanket that has your scent on it, all the better. Your cat will love “having you near” while you’re gone.
• Move their carrier to a sunny spot within the car, if there is one.

Where to stay when traveling with your cat

Road trips and long-distance moves with cats will often require hotel stays for sleeping and resting up (oh, and showering!). But not all hotels or motels are pet-friendly, and even those that are may only have a few pet-friendly rooms. So, here are some tips for finding pet-friendly places to stay when you’re on the road with kitty.

• If you know your route and plans, try to book pet-friendly accommodations early before they book up. This is especially important in the busy summer travel season and around the holidays.
• Some of the bigger hotel and motel chains are generally very pet-friendly. For instance, check out Red Roof Inns, Kimpton hotels, La Quinta, Best Western, and others. The folks at GoPetFriendly.com have a searchable state-by-state database to help you find pet-friendly accommodations.
• Some Airbnb properties are also pet-friendly!

Pro Tip: “Pet-friendly” means that your pets aren’t likely to have been the only pets staying in your room recently! And since not everyone uses flea and other parasite protection on their cats and dogs as regularly as they should… well, you (hopefully) get the picture. For your cat’s sake — and yours — make sure your cat is protected from fleas and other parasite infestation before heading out on the road! Dealing with travel anxiety and carsickness with your cat

Ah, the best-laid plans... It’s possible that even if you take all of the precautions and steps outlined above to condition your cat to car travel they may still be stressed or even experience carsickness in spite of your best efforts. Here are some tips and products to help minimize those possibilities and to help deal with these problems should they arise.

• Composure calming treats for cats : These are great and can be used both before and during travel.
• Thundershirt for cats : Some anxious cats respond really well to the compressive and comforting nature of these anti-anxiety jackets. You'll want to test it out on your cat well in advance of your departure date and even do some of your "test drives" with them wearing their new jacket.
• Feliway pheromone spray : A couple of sprays of this calming pheromone on the towel or mat in your cat's carrier could be just what they need to feel less stressed and more comfortable with travel. Note that with pheromones, a little goes a long way. Don't overdo it — more is not better.
• Catnip spray to spritz their toys and catnip to sprinkle in their carrier , both can provide some great and distracting entertainment for your cat and a nice little "high" that could help reduce their anxiety.
• The likelihood of a cat getting carsick and vomiting can be reduced by not feeding them for a few hours prior to the car ride. Now, this won’t be super practical for a multi-day car trip — after all, kitty has got to eat at some point! But, if it’s just a one-day trip, this might help.
• Talk to your vet about the medication specifically designed to help prevent carsickness and vomiting in pets.
• Similarly, there are also medications your vet may be able to prescribe to help decrease your cat’s anxiety associated with car rides. But be sure to speak with your vet well in advance of your expected departure date, as your kitty may need a current exam, and doing trial or test doses is often necessary to determine what the best and most effective dose or combination will be for your cat.
• Some cats also benefit from and respond to calming music to help reduce their anxieties. And, who knows, it may just help make the drive more pleasant for you, too.

Emergencies on the road

Emergencies do happen, and so the occasion may arise where you’ll need to find a vet when you’re on the road. You can always Google “emergency veterinarian in __zipcode/town__” or use a vet emergency locator .

First Aid on the Road

You'll also want to consider putting together a pet first-aid kit for your car. Here's a shopping list of first-aid essentials . Look for the icon of a little car 🚗 as it's these products that are the most essential in a smaller, travel-sized first-aid kit.

Special travel considerations for cats with chronic health issues and on medications

Before striking out on the road for a long trip or moving with a cat that’s got a chronic medical condition or is on long-term medications — like a cat with diabetes  or chronic kidney disease — there are a few steps and precautions you should take.

• Make sure your cat has had a recent (ideally within the past month or so) exam with your vet. You’ll have more peace-of-mind knowing that their condition is as well managed as possible and that they’re as healthy as can be before hitting the road with them. Your vet will also have recommendations for making their trip as comfortable and safe as possible.
• Bring a copy of your cat’s medical records with you! This should include recent exam notes, laboratory test results, and medication/supplement names and dosages. Your vet can often print these out (with enough notice), and they may even subscribe to an app or other service that allows you to keep updated copies of such records with you always on your phone. This will make visiting another vet on the road if you have to, much easier.
• Especially with cats with known chronic health concerns, it’s a good idea to know about a few vet hospitals along your route and in the area of your destination before you head out. See the vet locator tools and links listed in the section above to start searching.
• If your cat is on a special prescription diet, like for their kidneys, make sure to stock up on it from your vet before hitting the road. It’s not always easy to get prescription diet refills when you’re away from home and your vet’s office! You should take enough with you to last for the duration of your trip PLUS an additional (at least) 2 weeks.
• Similarly, be sure to stock up on your pet’s medications and supplements, as well as any supplies you need for them. This would include needles and a sharps container for safely disposing of and storing used needles for diabetic cats, pills for blood pressure, overactive thyroid, and any other chronic medications. Again, you should take with you enough to last for the duration of your trip PLUS an additional (at least) 2 weeks.
• Pro Tip: Depending on the type of insulin your cat is on, you may be able to get an insulin “pen” that may be more stable outside of the fridge and may be easier to administer to your cat on the road. Talk to your vet to see if an insulin pen is an option for your cat — it isn’t for all cats, but if it is for yours, it could be a great travel (and even long-term) solution for you.

The frame is inconspicuous and provides valuable structure without infringing on your cat’s space. To take it up another notch, this carrier is seat belt compatible and includes LATCH/ISOFIX tethers so you can secure it like a child’s car seat. Sherpa also claims this carrier is crash-tested by the University of Michigan, but we couldn’t find any evidence of this except on Sherpa’s website. We also love the extra safety features like the locking zippers and interior safety tether. 

Worth a separate mention is Sherpa’s Guaranteed-On-Board Program, which will reimburse the cost of a cat parent’s flight if they are denied entry because of the pet carrier’s size. This program applies only to the medium size of this carrier.

Of course, the Sherpa Forma Frame carrier isn’t perfect. Cat owners know how difficult it can be to travel just about anywhere with their feline friend. Wrangling a nervous animal into a pet carrier can often be a bit of a nightmare. Not only do you have to worry about your pet getting stressed, but you want them to be as safe as possible — while also following airplane regulations, if you’re flying .

There are tons of carrier designs on the market, but the best cat carrier is always the one that feels cozy, comfortable, and peaceful for your cat. “If you can find a carrier that your cat is not terrified of, that’s it: That’s the gold standard,” says Kerrie McKeon, resident cat expert at the animal-welfare and adoption organization Bideawee. “You can’t do better than that.” So we spoke to McKeon and nine other veterinarians, cat behavioral experts, and passionate cat owners about the carriers they recommend, to help you narrow down the crowded field.

What we’re looking for

Soft vs. hard sided.

Carriers can either be soft sided — made from flexible materials like nylon, polyester, or microfiber — or hard sided with a rigid, durable shell. Hard-sided carriers are sturdier and easier to clean, so they may be a better fit if your cat gets aggressive, suffers from motion sickness, or is prone to having accidents when nervous. However, since hard-sided carriers are more solid and bulky, it’s usually best to choose a soft-sided carrier if you’re planning to take your cat on a flight or road trip where they need to be stowed away into tight spaces. A soft-sided carrier is lighter and easier to store than a hard carrier, but could be more easily damaged by sharp claws and teeth and may not provide as much protection as a hard-sided carrier. Whether you ultimately end up with a soft-sided or hard-sided carrier, look for one with “both a top-load option and a front-load option,” advises McKeon. “Putting them in through the front can be hard if they’re trying to back up against you, but dropping them down through the top can be an easier option.”

While traditional handheld, duffel-style carriers are typically your best bet for vet visits or situations where you need to transport your cat from Point A to Point B as painlessly as possible, the carrier market has evolved in recent years to include some intriguing new designs. Some carriers now come with wheels, similar to rolling luggage , that allow you to pull your cat along rather than hoist it. Although it’s going to be “a much bumpier ride,” according to cat behavior consultant Dr. Mikel Delgado, a carrier with wheels can be helpful for cat owners with limited physical strength or mobility issues. Cat backpacks, often featuring a space-agey bubble peephole with ventilated openings, allow you to haul your cat on your back; they don’t allow as much room for your cat to move around, so they aren’t recommended for traveling long distances, but they’re perfect for taking your cat on quicker trips, especially ones where you need to keep your hands free. Finally, if your cat enjoys seeing the sights and getting some fresh air but is a little reluctant to explore the world on their own, they might enjoy being pushed in a cat stroller.

A lean, petite cat will require a different-size carrier than, ahem, a chonkier specimen. The perfect cat carrier will be roomy enough for your cat to stand, turn around, and lie down in, but not so big that they might slide around in it, which can cause them to become stressed. Your cat should feel snug, secure, and settled in their carrier. Not all brands offer multiple sizes, but most list the carrier’s dimensions and weight limits; knowing the general size and weight of your cat is a good place to start.

Best cat carrier overall

All four cat experts we spoke to recommended Sleepypod carriers, with Kate Benjamin, founder of the stylish cat-gear website Hauspanther , calling it the “Cadillac of cat carriers.” (Note: It also comes with a Cadillac-level price tag.) It functions as three products in one: a carrier, a pet bed , and a car seat , which means that your cat will be comfortable and safe while traveling.

Experts also recommend introducing the carrier to your cat before you need to actually use it for transport. “For a cat to feel comfortable going out in a carrier, they need to be familiar with the carrier itself. So if you set it up at home as a bed or a hideaway and let the cat hang out in the carrier, their scent will be added to it, and that will help reduce their stress,” says Benjamin. When uncovered, the Sleepypod looks like a soft, plush, inviting bed, but it also comes with a removable mesh dome that can be zipped on top to turn it into an enclosed carrier. The design has also been tested for “car accidents, and demonstrated that they can protect your pet even when they’re strapped in with a seatbelt,” says Dr. Delgado. It comes in both regular and miniature sizes, as well as a TSA-compliant option that collapses for easy storage when not in use, all certified by the Center for Pet Safety .

Best (less expensive) cat carrier

For a more budget-friendly alternative to the Sleepypod, Strategist senior writer Liza Corsillo crowned this Sherpa carrier the best overall dog carrier , but it works just as well for cats. Corsillo was actually gifted the carrier by a friend who had used it for her cat for several years; Corsillo herself has owned it “for around five years now, and it still looks pretty much brand-new,” she writes. It has openings that allow for both top and front entry; it boasts an easy-to-clean, water-resistant lining and machine-washable bedding; and according to veterinarian John Iovino, its mesh side panels allow for ventilation and offer “a chance for you to see your pet to make sure everything is okay.”

Benjamin is also a fan. She says she owns “a ton of different carriers,” and her Sherpa is one that she’ll “always grab out of the closet” because it’s “really durable. The cat is comfortable inside. You can take pieces out to clean it. It’s great.” Plus, since Sherpa partners with several major airlines through a program called Guaranteed on Board , you can rest assured that the small and medium sizes of this carrier are flight-friendly and “your pet travels will go by without a hitch,” says Samantha Schwab, the former resident pet expert at Chewy.

Best hard-sided cat carrier

Both the Sleepypod and the Sherpa are soft sided, but if you’re looking for a hard-sided carrier, McKeon suggests this one from Petmate. It has both top-load and front-load options for easy access, and is robust enough to contain a cat that may potentially become stressed and agitated by carriers in general. “The rigid sides means the cat can interact with it and it won’t collapse,” says Dr. Brian Evans, veterinarian and clinical director at Dutch , a 24/7 online vet-care service.

This carrier doesn’t come with any interior padding, but to make it more comfortable and easier to clean in the event of an accident, Dr. Evans suggests inserting a liner “as a way to collect any liquid that may get produced during these trips and make sure any padding is machine washable.” Additionally, hard-sided carriers may be the better choice for cat owners who live alone, because “you can prop it up against a wall and [put the cat inside by] yourself,” McKeon notes. “With a soft carrier, because of the zippering all the way around, a cat can just shoot out of the carrier. It’s really hard to do solo. So for one person, a plastic carrier is the way to go because it has its own structure.”

Best expandable cat carrier

This Petsfit carrier, which made our list of the best airline-approved pet carriers , is especially suited for long-haul travel. Keep the expandable mesh side panels zipped up while going through security to comply with airline regulations, then expand them out once you’re on the plane to allow your cat a little more room to stretch out. It also comes with a lightweight, flexible wire structure that can be compressed under a seat, as well as a comfy washable fleece mat. The carrier is available in three sizes; the small and medium options are likely to fit on most planes, but if your pet requires the large size, we recommend double-checking your airline’s size guidelines beforehand.

Strategist senior editor Jen Trolio owns two of these carriers, one for each of her two cats, and used them for a cross-country move a few years ago. She notes that you do have to “squish the carrier down a bit to fit them under some airline seats, but the frame, while flexible, is really strong.” She cautions that “you also have to give up some legroom to actually expand the carrier on a flight, but if your cat needs the space, it’s a nice feature to have.” In keeping with Benjamin’s advice, the carriers now live under her bed expanded and unzipped, and her cats like to use them “as a safe space when they want to hide or go to sleep in a very secure-feeling spot.”

This dual-compartment carrier is “more like a soft kennel that fits in the back of your car,” says communications manager Carolyn Rehm, who runs an Instagram account for her cats, Broccoli and Dilly . The two sections can be zipped together to form one large chamber, with enough room to hold up to four cats, or you can leave them separated so that each cat can have their own personal space. Since the carrier fits neatly into a car trunk or backseat, with built-in straps that safely connect to a seatbelt to prevent it from sliding around, Rehm has found it very handy “in case we need to travel last minute with the cats and it’s a long car ride, we want them to have room to move and be able to fit a litter box as well.” It also comes with a washable mat and an optional hammock for lounging.

Most stylish cat carrier

Premium pet-product brand Diggs recently released the Passenger, a very sleek and stylish nylon carrier that’s suited for cats and dogs up to 18 pounds. Available in a slew of sophisticated colorways (navy, slate, charcoal, and blush), at first glance it appears to resemble a regular weekender, something you’d see any JPMorgan lackey carrying on a trip upstate; a closer inspection, however, reveals details designed to make it a comfortable home away from home for your pet. There are safety considerations, including an interior collar-tether clip and exterior clips that attach to a seatbelt if you’re traveling by car, and thoughtful touches such as a detachable cross-body strap and a front pocket for storing essentials.

Diggs sent the Passenger my way for testing, and within 30 seconds of unboxing it, my roommate’s cat, Harry, who’d wandered over to see what all the fuss was about, was curled up inside and purring contentedly — zero bribing, threatening, or cajoling necessary. I attribute his alacrity to the soft, bouncy cushion on the bottom of the carrier, which can be fitted with a specially sized pee pad to assist in the cleanup of any accidents that happen on the road (you can buy the pads on the Diggs website.) As a cherry on top, the carrier is airline compliant and, like the SleepyPod, certified by the Center for Pet Safety .

Most stylish mesh cat carrier

If your cat requires more airflow or gets anxious if they’re unable to see their surroundings, you may want to opt for this Wild One carrier, which is equipped with larger mesh panels (and is a favorite of musician Lauv ). “A lot of my issue with cat carriers is that there’s not enough breathability, especially when your cat is under an airplane seat,” says content creator Billie-Rae Grant, owner of a cat named Goblin . She likes this carrier for its all-around mesh design and for how “chic and minimal it is. I find a lot of pet accessories are just the same old basic designs, but this one is really cute to carry around.” Though ostensibly meant for small dogs, it can easily fit cats up to 16 pounds; Grant travels with Goblin fairly often and has never had any problems with it.

Vulture’s former senior Snapchat editor Devon Sherer tested it out with her cats and reported that it was “as life-changing as it looks.” Both of Sherer’s cats preferred it “to the more standard, duffel-esque bag since they are up higher and can see things better”; they would even get into it voluntarily when it wasn’t in use and “glare at me through the bubble window,” Sherer says. Though backpack carriers can be useful for short jaunts (such as a trip Sherer took to Fire Island), they’re not advised for long journeys since they’re less roomy and it’s more difficult for you to monitor your pet. When transporting your cat in a backpack, Dr. Delgado advises owners to avoid “swinging it around or carrying it by the handle” and to support the bottom as much as possible.

Pet Gear’s strollers come recommended by both Dr. Evans and Dr. Delgado for their sophisticated shock absorption and secure design. “I’ve seen strollers that were not made very well and had some gaps in the enclosure part, so a cat could theoretically escape. You really want to make sure that it’s completely sealed and there’s no small spaces that they could squeeze out of,” Dr. Delgado advises. This stroller features an easy locking mechanism as well as an interior collar tether for extra protection that guarantees your cat will remain safely ensconced, while still providing panoramic vinyl mesh windows so they can watch the world go by. While some cats may not enjoy the experience of bumping along, for those who don’t mind it, “it can be a safe and fun way to give your cats outdoor enrichment and activity,” Dr. Delgado says.

Finally, if you’re short on space or cash (or both), a cardboard carrier is an easy and economical option, so long as you’re only making the occasional drive to the vet and not hauling your cat cross-country. Trolio used one when her cats were “younger and smaller and we lived in a one-bedroom apartment.” She found it easy to make the glorified cardboard box more comfortable “by putting a towel or blanket inside,” and appreciated that it could “fold super-flat when we weren’t using it and we could store it behind a dresser.” It’s also less of a headache if your cat has a tendency to pee when nervous, since it’s “technically disposable if you need it to be — and then you can just wash whatever bedding you’ve put inside,” Trolio says. However, if your cat is on the stouter side, cardboard may not work for you, as it’s a bit unwieldy and “not the easiest thing to carry.”

Entering Canada may be more complicated if your dog is coming from any country other than the United States. This is due to the concern of rabies, which causes some countries to face restrictions. If your dog has recently been to another country, it is recommended that you look further into the requirements for traveling from that area or ask your veterinarian.

What Do I Need to Cross the US Border into Canada with My Dog?

When traveling to Canada with your dog, the documentation required will depend on their age.

If your dog is 3 months old or older, you must provide a rabies vaccination certificate to cross the border. This document must be issued by a licensed veterinarian and show that your dog received a rabies vaccine within 3 years of the date you are crossing.

The rabies vaccination certificate must include the following:

• Your name and address
• A description of your dog (breed, sex, age, color, markings, etc.)
• Date of rabies vaccination
• Vaccine product information
• Vaccination expiry date
• Name, address, license number, and signature of the veterinarian who administered the vaccine

Puppies under 3 months of age are not required to provide proof of a rabies vaccine. However, border security may ask for proof of your dog's age.

Are the Rules Different for Cats or Other Pets?

All cats over the age of 3 months must be accompanied by a rabies vaccination certificate showing that the vaccine was administered within 3 years of the date of travel. Kittens under 3 months old are exempt from this requirement.

The requirements for ferrets to cross the border are similar. However, the rabies vaccination certificate must show that the vaccine was administered within 12 months of the travel date.

Any pet parents traveling with a bird must complete a " Veterinary Health Certificate for Export of Pet Birds from the United States of America to Canada ." This form details important information for your upcoming travel, including the number of birds you can travel with, depending on their species.

Can You Bring Pet Food from US to Canada?

Now that we have clarified the legal requirements for being allowed to cross the border, let's talk about the trip itself. Here are a few key considerations to help you plan a safe and enjoyable trip for everyone involved, including you AND your pet!

Ensure They Are Comfortable in the Car

Is this your first big road trip with your pet? Before heading out on the open road, consider taking some time to introduce them to riding in the vehicle. It may sound foolish. After all, they don't have to do anything but relax and enjoy the ride. However, the vehicle itself can be a scary experience for some pets due to the new sounds and sensations.

The best way to approach this is through a step-by-step process, slowly building on your pet's experience. Start by sitting in the car with the engine off. When your pet is comfortable with the space, turn on the engine to introduce the sound. Eventually, you can introduce movement with a quick trip around the block and then a short trip to a local pet store or park.

By working up to a longer trip, you are setting your pet up for many successful road trips to come.

Use a Seatbelt or Carrier

While it may be tempting to let your pet move around the vehicle freely, this could create a severe safety concern. Always secure your pet when the vehicle is in motion. This will protect your pet in the event of an accident and prevent them from becoming a distraction while you are driving.

When we go over the border with our pets, I keep their rabies vaccination certificates in the same spot as my passport, ensuring I can quickly grab everything when speaking with the border agent.

If you're fumbling and failing to find the documentation necessary, you are far more likely to be pulled in for a secondary check. Some agents are stricter than others. This can make the situation even more stressful for a pet who is already unsure of what is happening.

Be Prepared with High-Value Treats

A bag of your dog's favorite treats is another fantastic item to have close at hand. Even the best-behaved and trained dog may have an "off" day. Picture yourself trying to answer the border control agent's questions while your dog barks or misbehaves behind you.

Having a bag of treats available will allow you to distract your dog by giving them obedience commands and offering a reward to keep their attention. This can make managing an otherwise stressful and challenging border crossing far easier.

Kamaz FTL hauler registers NatCar brand

MOSCOW. Sept 4 (Interfax) - National Carrier JSC, the full truckload freight trucking company headed by former Globaltruck CEO Ilya Sattarov that Russian truck maker Kamaz founded this summer, applied to register the brand NatCar at the end of August, the registry of federal intellectual property service Rospatent showed.

The NatCar brand is also mentioned in the recruitment ads of National Carrier, which is actively looking for E-class drivers. It is offering working with this year's model Kamaz diesel trucks from the flagship K5 line and new dry goods (curtainsider) and refrigerated trailers.

National Carrier was founded on July 7 in Moscow with charter capital of 1 billion rubles, the Unified State Register of Legal Entities showed. The company registered two branches in early August, in Yekaterinburg and Elektrostal, Moscow Region. The company specializes in truck logistics and associated activities, including digitization processes.

A spokesman for National Carrier told Interfax earlier that the company plans to provide FTL trucking services using its own fleet, "as well as the resources of hired truckers." The company's fleet will initially consist of 400 semi-trailer trucks with a 50/50 ratio of curtainside to refrigerated trailers, and it plans to primarily operate on domestic routes, he said.

The company has preliminary agreements with major customers among marketplaces and retailers in the FMCG and DIY segments, the spokesman said. Strong demand for trucking services is expected toward the end of the year, so there is interest from customers, he said.

Kamaz marketing director Ashot Arutyunyan announced at the International Moscow Automotive Forum at the end of August that the truck maker was the principal investor in National Carrier. He did not comment on the new company's shareholder structure, but said it is a Kamaz startup.

Title : Active carbons as nanoporous materials for solving of environmental problems

However, up to now, the main carriers of catalytic additives have been mineral sorbents: silica gels, alumogels. This is obviously due to the fact that they consist of pure homogeneous components SiO2 and Al2O3, respectively. It is generally known that impurities, especially the ash elements, are catalytic poisons that reduce the effectiveness of the catalyst. Therefore, carbon sorbents with 5-15% by weight of ash elements in their composition are not used in the above mentioned technologies. However, in such an important field as a gas-mask technique, carbon sorbents (active carbons) are carriers of catalytic additives, providing effective protection of a person against any types of potent poisonous substances (PPS). In ESPE “JSC "Neorganika" there has been developed the technology of unique ashless spherical carbon carrier-catalysts by the method of liquid forming of furfural copolymers with subsequent gas-vapor activation, brand PAC. Active carbons PAC have 100% qualitative characteristics of the three main properties of carbon sorbents: strength - 100%, the proportion of sorbing pores in the pore space – 100%, purity - 100% (ash content is close to zero). A particularly outstanding feature of active PAC carbons is their uniquely high mechanical compressive strength of 740 ± 40 MPa, which is 3-7 times larger than that of  such materials as granite, quartzite, electric coal, and is comparable to the value for cast iron - 400-1000 MPa. This allows the PAC to operate under severe conditions in moving and fluidized beds.  Obviously, it is time to actively develop catalysts based on PAC sorbents for oil refining, petrochemicals, gas processing and various technologies of organic synthesis.
