Small Ship Cruises in Raja Ampat

Raja Ampat cruises explore one of the most beautiful archipelagos in all of Southeast Asia. Just off West Papua’s Bird's Head Peninsula, and comprising the main islands of Misool, Batanta, Waigeo and Salawati, known as the Four Kings, Raja Ampat also includes over a thousand smaller islands and islets covered in lush jungle and ringed with towering cliffs and resplendent beaches. The area cannot be properly explored without spending time both above and beneath the water’s surface. The island interiors feature mysterious caves and remnants of ancient civilizations, including cave paintings and submerged cemeteries, while under the waves await encounters with sharks, manta rays and barracudas.

Top things to do and see in Raja Ampat

A sailing trip through Raja Ampat offers a taste of everything that makes this region so special, from the cave paintings and karst islets of Misool to spotting birds of paradise on Waigeo, and hiking to the waterfalls of Batanta. Not to mention, the superb snorkelling and diving in the area.

The Misool archipelago includes the main island of Misool along with dozens of karst islets. The base of these tiny islands has been eroded by water and time, giving them the appearance of giant stone mushrooms sprouting from the turquoise waters. At Tomolol Bay, visitors on Raja Ampat cruises can swim within the island’s fascinating cathedral-like cave, an unforgettable experience. To play Indiana Jones, drift among the islets in search of prehistoric cave paintings and undersea graveyards.

Small boat cruises to Batanta take visitors into its lush jungle interior. Local guides from the coastal village of Arefi lead travellers through mangrove forests to a series of spectacular waterfalls. The more adventurous will hike deep into the jungle and see still taller and bigger falls, but all visitors will be given the opportunity to swim and relax in natural pools surrounded by mangrove trees and the sounds of island birds.

Waigeo , the archipelago’s largest island, is nearly bisected by the massive, fjord-like Mayalibit Bay. Here, visitors explore the island’s awesome caves, led by a guide from Lopinol village. Visitors will also trek to Sapoken village where they will not only enjoy a close look into local life on the island but may also learn about conservation and community-building efforts in the region. The village of Sapoken is also one of the best spots to see the Red Bird of Paradise and Wilson’s Bird of Paradise.

The Wayag Islands are for those intrepid visitors in search of a little adventure on their Raja Ampat luxury cruise. These karst islets have been shaped by time into an otherworldly series of rocky cliffs, jagged peaks and secluded coves. Crystal clear waters lap at white sand beaches, while the stone spires can be climbed, offering panoramic views of the surrounding area.

Snorkelling and kayaking are popular activities among the islands of Raja Ampat. The area is known as a biodiversity hotspot, with much of its wildlife found beneath the waves. The coral reefs here are host to an enormous variety of marine life, from sharks, grouper and manta rays, to seahorses, barracudas and Napoleon wrasse. The waters here are so clear that even those visitors who prefer to stay dry can spot cruising sharks and rays from the comfort of a kayak, their cruise ship or an overwater hut.

Village visits in Raja Ampat offer insight into the lives of the various tribes inhabiting the islands. Each tribe has its own set of cultural traditions, often expressed through song and dance. The people of West Waigeo, for example, perform ceremonial songs using the suling tambur , a traditional bamboo flute. Visitors may also witness the villagers’ unique Papuan fishing techniques and will have the chance to purchase local handicrafts and foods.

Top Tips for visiting Raja Ampat

  • A waterproof flashlight can be useful for exploring the caves of Misool.
  • If you have one, prepare to put your underwater camera to work,
  • Visits to Batanata include a fair amount of trekking, so wear good walking shoes.
  • Note that the region has microclimates, meaning that, even as the sun shines on one island, a nearby isle could be experiencing showers. Be prepared for the occasional shower, regardless of the time of year.
  • Waters can be rougher in June and July, so travellers susceptible to seasickness will want to pack extra medication or avoid visiting during this time of year.

Best time to cruise Raja Ampat

Anytime is the best time to visit the islands of Raja Ampat. Weather and water conditions in the area are generally good year round. However, visitors should always plan ahead, given that, in addition to the usual wet and dry seasons of Southeast Asia, Raja Ampat also has a windy season.

Raja Ampat in October to April is the dry season, though there can be some heavy rains in December and January. That said, these rains are usually brief and localized.

May to October in Raja Ampat bring the wet season, but again, the rains usually do not last more than a few hours and are less dramatic than in other parts of Southeast Asia.

June and July in Raja Ampat is unofficially known as the windy season, when waters may be rougher. This should not affect snorkelling conditions but may mean that small boat cruises will be moderately less comfortable, especially for travellers prone to seasickness.

There is no best time to see wildlife or enjoy the snorkelling in Raja Ampat. There is something to see all year round

Where do Raja Ampat cruises depart from?

Indonesian luxury cruises to Raja Ampat typically depart from Sorong, on West Papua. International visitors will usually fly into Jakarta or Bali (the sites of Indonesia’s two main international airports) then connect with domestic flights to Sorong possibly through Makassar or Manado, on Sulawesi Island. It is recommended that visitors fly to Makassar or Manado the day before their Raja Ampat departure from Sorong.

Most international flights to Indonesia fly into Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, or Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport, also known as Denpasar International Airport. Both these airports operate as hubs within Indonesia and Southeast Asia.

Raja Ampat Luxury Cruise

Raja Ampat Cruise

Sailing towards the edge of the pacific ocean, our 7-night raja ampat cruise is a visual spectacle with unmatched marine diversity on show at the best dive and snorkel sites on earth.

Onboard the Aqua Blu: Raja Ampat

Known for its unique topography, Raja Ampat captivates with the enigmatic beauty of its limestone karst island clusters. The archipelago – made up of over 1,500 islands – bewilders and enthralls explorers with dramatic landscapes that shelter secret lagoons, bays, beaches, and the magical blue river of Kali Biru. Surrounding these forested islands are some of the most biodiverse marine environments on the planet. Raja Ampat is known to harbor one of the richest coral reef ecosystems as well as a wide array of marine life, with new species being identified constantly. Every day spent in this East Indonesian paradise is an opportunity for new discoveries and unforgettable memories.

On Aqua Blu, discover our Raja Ampat luxury cruise with world-class wildlife excursions on both land and sea. It is here that famous 19th-century naturalist, Alfred Russell Wallace, stumbled upon the birds of paradise that can’t be found anywhere else on Earth. These winged wonders live alongside 350 other bird species, including forest kingfishers and king parrots. Opposite the canopies and the sky, Raja Ampat’s waters are often dubbed the “Amazon of the seas”. While exploring this tropical paradise, divers and snorkelers alike can spot incredible creatures such as black tip reef sharks, manta rays, and pygmy seahorses.

Raja Ampat’s many beaches are often the nesting ground for turtle species including the Pacific leatherback, the largest of all living turtle species on Earth. Meanwhile, you can find the world’s most extensive network of mangrove forests here that support populations of dugong and juvenile fish. Explore this designated Marine Protected Area (MPA) on Aqua Blu’s Raja Ampat cruise. Early Bird Bonus Enjoy 20% off when you book to travel across all departure dates in 2024, 2025 and 2026. Raja Ampat: Home to the world’s most diverse underwater habitats

raja ampat boat trip

Onboard our Raja Ampat luxury cruise, sail across mesmerizing turquoise and blue waters which constantly jostle for your attention and beckon you to dive down and under. Located in the heart of the Coral Triangle, the 20,000 square mile region is home to every kind of underwater habitat imaginable; pristine reef flats, secret bays, swift channels, deep drop-offs, shallow seamounts, mangroves, marine lakes, and protected coral gardens.   Raja Ampat is a thriving subterranean metropolis that houses more than 1,300 species of tropical marine fish (about 50% of all known species) and more than 600 species of coral (nearly 75% of all known species of reef-building corals). This is in addition to manta rays, rare sea turtle species and schooling hammerheads. Cape Kri in the Dampier Strait notably holds the world record for the most number of species counted in a single dive (374 in total).

Raja Ampat: Witness the cradle of life between two major oceans

raja ampat boat trip

However, Raja Ampat’s underwater splendor isn’t defined by sheer numbers alone. Our Raja Ampat luxury cruise route also happens to be in the middle of a major cetacean migration route and aggregation site where various whales and dolphin species have been sighted.   Of great significance is also the fact that the region is the meeting point of the Indian and the Pacific Ocean called the Indonesian Throughflow. There’s a six-inch (15cm) average height difference between these two oceans, creating an immense exchange of water carrying millions of aquatic eggs and larvae that either spawn to life or serve as a vital source of food for other marine animals.   At the same time, the cooler water from deep-sea trenches and basins plays a part in Raja Ampat’s stunning biodiversity. These environments offer shelter from the glacial water of the ice ages, and today offer natural protection against rising sea temperatures that have resulted in the bleaching of other relatively unprotected coral habitats including the Great Barrier Reef and the Maldives. Endowed with natural geological defenses, Raja Ampat is truly Mother Nature’s last frontier.   Aqua Expeditions’ Raja Ampat cruise aboard Aqua Blu sails every year from December through to February. The cruise sets sail on 7-night itineraries, departing from the city of Sorong.   Come sail with us on Aqua Blu and experience one of the world’s most rewarding marine expeditions.

What Travelers Say

What an adventure!

The diving quality offered by Raja Ampat is the first highlight, as it should be. It’s amazingly colourful, vibrant, full of life and of surprises. You cannot possibly know better. Second highlight is the staff aboard the Shakti… Really! Their attentions for their guests are genuine, they are constantly going out of their ways to help and make sure you get the most out of your experience. They are smart, fun and interesting to talk to. Everything is kept in order and their organization is always efficient and insuring that everything runs safely and smoothly. Good job!

Sabrina, 2015

I want to thank the crew, who are very copious. They gave us a very comprehensive run down of the best dive sites in Raja Ampat. The dive director is a person with an amiable personality, chatty, and an interesting person with lots of things to share. All of them did their job well. From guidance in our diving activities to assistance in setting up our equipment, they attended to our needs with a smile on their face. The housekeeping team also kept the place clean and tidy. The chefs cooked fresh and delightful Indonesian and international dishes. I also appreciate the management of SMY Shakti when it comes to the organization of diving schedules and their utmost care and passion for protecting the area of Raja Ampat from possible environmental effects of massive tourism.

Jason, 2015, USA

I highly recommend that people go to Raja Ampat soon since the coral is still living and beautiful here, unlike most places in the world. I can't rave about this trip enough; everything was excellent. The wooden schooner was very cool, slightly rustic but comfortable. And we rarely saw another boat; it was true wilderness. For those who love photography, there is ample opportunity for unique photographs. The limit on number of passengers provided the perfect group. It was easy to get to know seven other people, which was nice since I traveled as a single. I can truly say that I have never been as relaxed as I was on this trip. It was hard coming back to reality! I give this trip a 10 out of 10.

Susan, 2017

This is an amazing trip! Living on the boat was the best. The snorkeling was unparalleled. We snorkeled 2 different reefs every day and each was spectacular. The soft coral snorkel was particularly awe inspiring. I've been snorkeling for many years and have never seen anything like the corals and animals we saw on this trip. The guides were fabulous, pointing out animals and plants I would never have seen on my own. I really enjoyed the company of the other guests as well as the guides and crew. This was the trip of a lifetime for us.

Karen, 2018

A wonderful experience on board the Shakti. Raja Ampat is a haven for marine life, and I was blown away by the variety of fish, corals and other marine life we saw. A truly unforgettable experience, awe inspiring. I haven't stopped dreaming about it since!

Raja Ampat liveaboard boat tours

Raja Ampat liveaboard boat tours - Photo courtesy Deni Rajaampat/www.rajaampatadventures.com

Raja Ampat liveaboard boat tours are one of the best ways to see as much of Raja Ampat as possible in a short amount of time. We’re not talking about the many liveaboard dive boats that cruise the Raja Ampat archipelago: We want to introduce you to local community based tourism operators who provide affordable Raja Ampat marine adventures to travellers interested in more than just diving.

Locally owned liveaboard boats provide an opportunity to visit far more than Raja Ampat’s best dive sites. In addition to their regular dive, snorkelling and sight-seeing itineraries, local liveaboard operators can provide affordable private charters to groups wanting a Raja Ampat adventure of their own design.

Using diesel powered traditional wooden boats and large outboard powered longboats, Raja Ampat liveaboard boat tours are designed for small groups of four to eight people and include land excursions and all meals. Sleeping arrangements include being able to sleep onshore under the stars on deserted island beaches. In addition to diving, snorkelling and remote island village visits, locally operated liveaboard tours provide the opportunity to hike to waterfalls, scenic viewpoints in hidden island seascapes, Bird of Paradise display sites and Raja Ampat’s many culturally significant sites.

Here are some local Raja Ampat liveaboard boat tour operators and experienced, English speaking guides who can deliver the ultimate Raja Ampat sea gypsy experience and some great Raja Ampat land based adventures. ..

Raja Ampat Adventures

Deni Malingkas’ Raja Ampat Adventures is an established business with a great reputation. Raja Ampat Adventures offers liveaboard adventures on large and comfortable boats.

If you’re passionate about photography, Deni’s an excellent guide with a good eye for great photos – see his work in the gallery above. (Main image by Claudia P, courtesy of Raja Ampat Adventures.) Thanks for letting us repost them Deni!

Contact Deni on facebook for more information.

KLM Insos Raja Ampat Liveaboard

The KLM Insos Raja Ampat is permanently based in Raja Ampat, operates throughout the year, and caters to both divers and snorkellers.

Trips are available in both Dampier Strait/Wayag and Misool regions.

See the Insos facebook page for more information.

do you know anything about Insos is still operating or will start operating again? I tried to go with them in 2019 but there was an unclear situation until the end if the have enough passengers to start the trip. Now I s would like to give it another try in 2022/203, but I do not see any new entrys at their facebookpage and I have no facebookaccount to ask them…

thanks a lot Sina

We have had no recent updates from Insos, so we don’t know their situation now, sorry. If you can’t try them on the phone/WA number published on their fb page, then perhaps this email address will work: [email protected]

We are two British guys looking for 2 more people to do this boat trip in the next two weeks. Is anyone interested?

Hi! All these options are quite expensive for someone who isn’t a diver. We are a family of four who would love a snorkeling live aboard. Are there less expensive options if you don’t dive? Thanks so much!

Boat travel in Raja Ampat is expensive, but it’s not necessary to be based on a boat to enjoy excellent snorkelling (or diving).

Most homestays have world-class snorkeling from their beaches. Applying the “Good house reef” filter on the accommodation page will quickly show those.

All homestays can provide day trips to the best of Raja Ampat’s snorkelling and dive sites. You won’t be disappointed if you choose to stay at a few different homestays instead of doing a liveabord trip.

Hello Can you recommend a good home stay which has snorkelling easily accessible for children off the beach?

Yes! Go to the accommodation page . In the search column on the left hand side, tick the Location feature boxes “Calm beach” and “Good house reef”. Scroll to the bottom of the search column and hit “Apply filters”. Choose from the results returned.

Please note that Raja Ampat has extremely strong tidal currents and other marine hazards, and that, even at apparently calm places, children should always be accompanied while in the water .

How about couples who want to explore. Just 2 pax. Any alternative arrangements?

You mean you just want to explore together, without sharing a boat with any other passengers? If so, then any homestay can provide a boat for that kind of exploration, or you could go with Chris .

I am looking for some people joining me for a liveaboard, snorkeling and trekking trip from 14th to 20th February with Deni Rajaampat, you can find his website and the itinerary here .

I’ve originally planned to take the trip with my daughter, but that won’t work unfortunately, and now I’d like to find someone to take her spot. In addition to this, there are at least four more spots on the boat, so a group of travelers is also welcome.

Please let me know if you are interested ;)

You’re welcome to join our facebook travellers’ forum group and post this request there too if you like. Good luck!

We would like to book a tour for 4 days starting 16th or the 17th of october. We dont know how to book so could you please provide us information and help us out.

Thanks, N. Singh

If you want to book one of the trips above, or want more information than is provided on Stay Raja Ampat, then you need to contact the providers directly.

Hello, We would like to have a boat trip in Raja Ampat min 5-6 days max 10 days between July 28th and August 11th (2018). We are 3 people in total : my wife, my daugther 14 years old and myself. Is it a good period / good time to do a boat trip end July/Beginning August ? What kind of boat trip can we do ? We would like to go and visit Misool, is it possible ? Many thanks for your revert, Warm regards Tanguy BRIAND & family

Hello Tanguy

Your choices are somewhat limited in late July and August, as those are usually quite windy and many liveaboard operators leave Raja Ampat then. See the weather page for more information.

At that time of year, the best way to visit Misool would probably be by staying at homestays and doing day trips by boat.

That is also easy to arrange in the northern part of Raja Ampat covered by this website. All homestays can organise boat trips and transfers to other islands so you can experience as much as possible.

Hi, we are a married couple in our late 50s wanting to snorkel and bird watch in Raja Ampat for 1 week to 10 days. We want to live on a boat possibly with Deni Malinkas Raja Ampat adventures. Cheers, Julian (29)

Hi, we are 3 friends travelling to Raja Ampat from the 19-29th of Jan (yes, this week) and we wonder if there is anyone who would like to join us so we can share the cost of some of the boat trips. We are all backpackers so we aren’t very good on getting expensive trips but we heard there are boats which could take you around and the more people are on the boat, the less the cost is. Anyone interested to travel with a 3 nationality group? We are fun, love nature, snorkelling and just having a good time. Let me know ☺️

We are 2 snorkelers looking to do a trip with Raja Ampat Adventures (with Deni) His current schedules trips during our time period are full but there is a second boat available if there are 4 or more people. Is anyone else looking to do a 7 or 10 day trip leaving around February 11, 12, 13 or 14? (we are flexible with trip length and semi-flexible with start date) We are pretty mellow travelers in our 40’s/50’s who LOVE the underwater world!

If you want, you’re welcome to also post this over on our facebook page to increase your chances of finding some travelling companions. Hope you do!

Done! Thank you :)

Hi, We are two people and we would be interested for a boat trip (with Deni or another boat but minimum 7 days) . We will be there around 16 of february. Do you want to talk about any possibilities of doing this trip together ?

Have a good day !

we spent 6 days on the KLM INSOS with a really great team! This is the best way to discover the Raja Ampat Archipelago. The boat is very comfortable and has plenty of space. the cooking of Serita and Paulo was a very good surprise. they have always tried to please us! The crew is a collection of endearing characters! We got to know them a bit during our trip and it was with regret that we left them. the activities offered are simply fantastic. Despite our many travels, we have never seen so many wonderful things in such a short time: sharks, manta rays, trevallies, flying fishes, barracudas, dolphins, sea snakes, huge groupers, Bumpheads, a plethora of tropical fishes of all kinds and sumptuous corals far beyond our expectations! What about landscapes? Unforgettable! especially since we have enjoyed all alone at each step and it is a real luxury! Once again, a big thank you to the entire KLM team who allowed us to live these unforgettable moments! PS: Aghil !!!!!!!! Jelly fish !!!!! Merci, vraiment c’était incroyable. Alex, Cloclo, Roro, Gégé, les ptits crapouillouds français et notre ami John le rostbeef au grand coeur! J’en chialerai presque…

Hi! we are 2 people. We are looking for more people to make de tour 7 days / 6 night around raja ampat since 20th of August till 26th with Raja Ampat Adventures.

Hey! Since I could not find any review about Raja Ampat Adventures when organising my trip to Raja Ampat, I thought I make one now! We did a trip with Deni and his crew in late September 2016.

To start of, the trip was absolutely wonderfull. The boat he was using back then is very spacious. Deni is building a new boat of his own now, so it is even supposed to get better. You can have comfortable sleeping. Everything is very clean. Sometimes you can take a shower at the place were the boat is for the night, when not, you can take a shower on the boat. The crew is so nice and funny, also very intelligent people. Most of them come from North Sulawesi. They feel more like other guests that are making the trip as well than as a crew :) The food is fresh and very delicious. Everyday there is fresh fish or chicken, always vegetables, rice and fruits. They provide an afternoon snack and they serve scrambled eggs for breakfast. We really did not expect such nice food! Keep in mind that there will be no softdrinks or beer on the boat, which for most of us was a clear fact, but other guest where really pissed of about it.

With this trip you start to realise about all these islands where no people are living or only fishermen rest for the night. And Wajag is actually quite far away! It is a magical place and you will be there for an afternoon and a morning or a day, this depends on when you arrive there I think. We did two trekkings to a viewpoint and some snorkelling there. If you want, you can take your matresss and sleep on the deck of the boat. This trip will bring you to places wich are wonderfull but where you would have never arranged a trip for by yourself. It was really nice.

We still think about it so often! We really recommend everyone to join one of Deni’s trips. The only thing I want to say is that when you want to experience the Islands local life, you have to go to a homestay as well. I loved the boattrip but I dit not have the feeling that I learned something about the area, I only saw a lot of beautiful and impressive things. Also keep in mind that Deni and his crew are doing their absolute best and are organising amazing trips but they still have to learn about what western tourists want and do not want :) So it will be perfect, but some things will be different than you expected.

Hi! we are 2 people. We are looking for more people to make de tour 7 days / 6 night around raja ampat since 01/04/2017 to 07/04/2017

It is a unforgettable holiday, because of friendly people and the scenery which have no equal in this world! I love raja ampat, I love Koryau Kayem.

My husband and I did the 6 days 5 nights boat tour with Freddy from 15th to 20th Feb 2015. 15th Feb: We arrived in Sorong, someone picked us up from the airport and brought us to the port to take the 14:00 ferry. We arrived in Waisai at 16:00 and Freddy picked us up (when he arrived, more than 30 mins later) We slept in a guesthouse in Waisai. 16th Feb: Freddy was supposed to pick us up at 9:00 but, still not knowing why, he came only at 12:00… We finally ended up on the boat and reached Gam island. We did some snorkeling near our camp. 17th Feb: We went all around Gam island with 1 stop for snorkeling in the morning and at about 16:00 we arrived to Yenwaupnor Village where we did a very nice snorkeling and then bird-watching. We took the boat again to install the camp in Airborek island. 18th: We went to Manta point and we saw many Manta, it was beautiful. Musa, the cook, came snorkeling with us and took us to a place where we could see many of them! We then wanted to go to Pianemo but the waves were too high so we headed up to Batanta and arrived in a empty island (actually an abandoned island where there used to be an administration center) where the snorkeling was amazing! At night Musa took us for a night trek in the forest and spotted many giant Hermit Crabs (attracted by the coconuts Freddy prepared in advance) It was a great experience! Musa even cooked one for us! 19th: We managed to go to Pianemo and saw the beautiful landscape we were expecting! We slept there but it was the first time that Freddy ever stayed the night there so there was no cooking place for Musa and it was not really convenient. 20th: We went to Mansuar where we had the best snorkeling ever in Sawandarek!! We finally finished the tour in Koryau Kayem homestay.

Positive points: – Someone was always coming with us for the snorkelings (mostly Musa) so he could show us many things that we might not have seen by ourselves. – The food that Musa cooked was really good! – It’s a good way to see a lot of Raja Ampat – The staff was really nice

Points to know/do before doing this tour: – The boat is really uncomfortable and noisy. The tour of Gam island was really long and it would have been great to stop in the middle. – We didn’t sleep well for 5 days (it was hot in the tent and the floor, even with a small mattress, was really not comfortable) – We didn’t shower for 3 days (some camps have mandi but some don’t) – It would be better to ask an itinerary before (even if it might change because of the weather conditions) so at least you know what can be done on each island that you visit. When we arrived on Gam the 1st day it seemed that there was no plan on “what to do” and as it was our first day, we were really scared about the rest of the tour! – Freddy was not the best guide we would have expected, seeing all the other reviews. He was not talkative, not coming with us, not showing us things. It became a bit better with the time but at the beginning we were really wondering why he was acting like that. However, because we can speak bahasa Indonesia, Musa, who doesn’t speak English, was really helpful, nice, actually doing the job of a guide + a cook!

I would recommend to visit Raja Ampat with a boat tour as it’s really convenient, but it’s important to be ready to spend 5 days in very non-comfortable conditions!

Are you french ? Because we are looking for french people who have experience of raja ampat.

We travelled with Freddy for a 6 day/5night boat tour from Sept 28th to Oct 3rd 2014 before 9 nights at Lumba Lumba on Kri for diving. Probably worth mentioning we are a couple in our early 40’s who love to dive, snorkel, trek and explore off the beaten track, we don’t mind roughing it but do need a few nights of relative comfort every now and then. Raja Ampat is an amazing place and although we got to see quite a lot on this trip, we will be going back for more. Freddy was a kind and considerate guide, his brother Musa was lovely (best food we had in Raja was yours Musa!), the crew were a little reserved. Itinerary ended up being 1 night on Gam, 2 nights on Arborek, 1 night on Dayan Island and 1 night on Batanta. The plan was to go to Wayag or at least Pianemo but unfortunately the seas were very rough making for an unpleasant and sometimes worrying voyage. In the end, Freddy and I agreed we had to give up and change our itinerary. Also my partner had an accident, cutting open his hand really badly, so we decided it was best to not go too remote just in case we needed medical assistance. The seas and currents in Raja Ampat are the most changeable we’ve experienced both above and below the surface, this means plans can and do change, not because the locals don’t want to please, far from it, it’s for your safety. Some of the reefs we snorkelled were truly amazing (Dayan and Gam near Sawinggrai village were my favourites, you name it, we saw it) and I was lucky enough to see 3 mantas at Manta Sandy. We went on little trips to see the birds of paradise, a couscous and coconut crabs, climbed a limestone island for a good view, visited a bat cave and enjoyed the local music at Musa’s village, Yensawai on Batanta. Be prepared to pay a little extra to local people for some of these trips and to be a novelty with the children  Overall we had a great time but this is not a trip that would suit everyone. If you have a spirit of adventure, don’t mind mandi’s or a lack of privacy, can take some bumps and bruises and love the great wild outdoors then you will be fine. There really were no comforts at all, the boat was very basic, the engine very noisy and in hindsight we would have preferred to sleep on the boat. As romantic as camping on a beach might sound, the sand flies ate us alive even on the very windy Dayan Island. We would also recommend learning a bit of Indonesian and taking a phrasebook as communication was not always easy. Needless to say taking a very comprehensive medical kit and being prepared to be completely self-sufficient is a necessity. A word on footwear, we were barefoot for the nearly the whole 3 weeks but a secure sturdy sandal (wetsuit boots at a push) were absolutely necessary for climbing the very sharp limestone islands. We still need to go to Wayag, Pianemo and Misool and quite a few more islands, so saving our money for our return!

I will be flying to Sorong from 20th December until 1st Jan. I am travelling alone but would love to join a liveaboard if any tours are running that I could join?

Hi Aimee –

If you’re interested in joining one of the tours described above, you’ll need to contact them directly to find out about their schedules and to book a place.

If you do go with one of those, we hope you’ll find the time on your return to leave your comments or a review here. Thanks and all the best for your trip!

Hello! we are two sister who are going to raja ampat from de 31st of october to the 5th of november. We are very interested on snorkeling, diving and going to waisai. Any recomendation? liveboard or homestay?

That’s not an easy question to answer Lucia! Especially without knowing what level of comfort and sleeping arrangements you’re looking for.

If you want to see as much of Raja Ampat as possible then a liveaboard tour might be the way to go. On the other hand, if you just want to snorkel, dive and explore Waisai then a homestay might be a better and cheaper option. (Waisai is the main town on Waigeo where all the ferries dock. You didn’t mean Wayag , did you? If so, then a liveaboard tour could be the best option.)

I’m now sure that I need to get back there soon :)

Best Raja Ampat Liveaboard Trips

Located to the northwest of the New Guinea island of Indonesia, the Raja Ampat archipelago  is comprised of over 1,500 small, beautiful and isolated islands. It’s also considered part of the Coral Triangle which contains the richest marine biodiversity on Earth. Its beauty, diversity and abundant marine life is what makes a Raja Ampat liveaboard trip the ultimate dream of any diver.

When it comes to what you can see underwater, Raja Ampat surprises even the most well-traveled diver. Diverse is the best adjective to describe this place. It has soft corals, hard corals, caves, WWII wrecks, drop offs, shallow reefs, black and white sand bottoms, currents, calm waters, macro diving and big fish. In other words, if you don’t like diving here, you might not like diving at all!

Diving in Raja is not for budget travelers. However, most of the expenses are related to logistics and transportation, not the diving itself. However, if you are going to pay to come all this way, you better get to dive and explore what the islands have to offer and that’s when a liveaboard is your best option.

Being a prime destination for scuba diving, there are many diving liveaboards operating in Raja Ampat. To help you choose the right boat for preferences and budget, we’ve put together this quick guide that shows you the best boats and some things to consider when it comes time to book.

Sailing between Raja Ampat and Komodo, these expeditions traverse the entire Banda Sea. And, they visit secret, exploratory, and uncharted dive sites along the way. Above water, guests on this boat can expect to be pampered. Perks include massage service, fine dining, and some of the region’s most comfortable cabins.

CONSIDERATIONS – SCUBA DIVING IN RAJA AMPAT

Intermediate.  Raja Ampat is one of the most exciting liveaboard destinations on the planet, but it isn’t for beginners. Divers should be comfortable with rough and unpredictable surface conditions, fast-paced currents, and open ocean conditions. Advanced certification and a minimum of 50 logged dives are recommended.

7 to 10 days.  While it’s possible to book shorter itineraries, you should plan a minimum of one week to explore Raja Ampat. More distant dive sites are some of the region’s best, and well worth the extra day or two.

The liveaboard diving season runs from October through April, with some flexibility. During the monsoon, boats explore other nearby areas like Cenderawasih Bay.

No matter what time of year you visit, plan for hot weather and rain. Sea temperatures range from 81 to 86° F (27 to 30° C), but cold currents make a 3mm wetsuit your best bet.

Visibility in Raja Ampat ranges from 49 to 98 feet (14 to 30 meters) throughout the year. Blooming plankton, a favorite meal for visiting mana rays, reduces visibility between October and April.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Raja Ampat is the beating heart of Southeast Asia’s Coral Triangle. Liveaboard divers can expect stunning biodiversity, thrilling drift dives, well-preserved historical shipwrecks, and plenty of big fish.

Your liveaboard will most likely explore a variety of reef habitats like plunging walls, massive pinnacles, and shallow coral gardens. Photographers should pack for both macro and wide-angle photography.

HIGHLIGHTS – DIVING IN RAJA AMPAT

Whale sharks.

For liveaboard diving with whale sharks, Cenderawasih is the ultimate thrill. Divers can gather beneath local fishing platforms to observe the sharks feeding. This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for underwater photographers.

HAMMERHEADS

Raja Ampat’s southernmost dive sites offer some of the region’s best locations for encountering great hammerhead sharks. Frequently found at depths below 100 feet (30 meters), these graceful hunters are easiest to spot out in the blue.

Manta rays frequent these waters year round, but your best chances for spotting them are during fall and winter months. Dive sites like Manta Ridge and Magic Mountain feature cleaning stations where groups of up to 30 rays gather.

Many boats visiting Raja Ampat also visit the famous WWII wrecks of West Papua. Allied and Japanese boats sunk in the region and make an exciting addition to your liveaboard itinerary. Wreck diver specialty certification is a must for divers who wish to enter any shipwreck.

DRIFT DIVING

It’s no secret that Raja Ampat isn’t a liveaboard destination for beginners. If you’re planning to dive the region, you should have experience with strong currents and drift diving. Cleaning stations may require you to use a reef hook, and advanced skills like negative entries may be necessary. Don’t forget to pack multiple surface signaling devices.

ITINERARIES IN RAJA AMPAT

Raja Ampat is a large geographic area, and there are endless possibilities for liveaboard itineraries in the region. Where your boat goes will depend on the season, trip duration, price point, and goals of the divers onboard. Many liveaboards venture outside of Raja Ampat, and not only during the monsoon. If you’re hoping to pack a little bit of everything into your trip, look for “best of Papua” itineraries. These routes visit historic WWII shipwrecks, Papua’s pristine reefs, and the famous whale sharks of Cenderawasih.

TRADITIONAL

Traditional routes in the park include northern itineraries, focusing on the remote waters north of Sorong and southern courses exploring the area around Misool. Both options are excellent for experienced divers and offer a variety of environments like reef and muck.

Northern voyages exploring the Dampier Strait are perfect for a wide-angle photo safari, fast-moving currents, and manta cleaning stations. Divers can expect plenty of big fish, and all around challenging dive conditions. Visibility in this region varies greatly.

Southern trips around Misool often voyage into the Bana Sea and take on world class macro “bug hunts” around Ambon. The south is known for up-close encounters with wildlife of all sizes, including hammerheads in the Banda Arc. High-speed currents, rare wildlife, and quickly changing dive conditions define this stunning region.

BEST DIVE SITES IN RAJA AMPAT

Cenderwasih bay.

Though not officially a part of Raja Ampat, this marine park is visited by liveaboards during the monsoon season. The main attraction is a guaranteed chance to dive alongside feeding whale sharks. But, historical WWII wrecks and vibrant coral reefs make the region 100% worth a visit.

THE FAR NORTH

If you’re serious about spotting a pygmy seahorse, these northern walls are a good bet. Multiple species reside here, with some individual fans housing groups of six or more. This area is also reliable for nudibranchs, clingfish, squat lobsters, and crinoid shrimp. Photographers should plan for an extra-tiny macro shootout. Consider a snoot for super macro shots. A photographer’s favorite site, The Passage, is one of this region’s most spectacular.

THE FAR SOUTH

The Banda Sea, and Raja Ampat’s most southern sites are some of the region’s most remote. These waters are an excellent place to spot large pelagics like hammerheads and mantas. But, anything can happen out there including encounters with orcas, dolphins, and whales. Photographers should plan for a wide-angle adventure featuring plenty of schooling fish, and supersized subjects. The most dived site in this region is Boo Rock.

DAMPIER STRAIT

This stretch of cleaning stations promise manta sightings on nearly every dive, often in large numbers. You should expect strong currents at this shallow site, and most operators secure their groups with reef hooks. Photographers should plan for non-stop wide-angle action. Popular dive sites include Manta Ridge, Manta Sandy, and Sardine Reef.

With some of the best visibility in Raja Ampat, this region is a great place to take in the intense biodiversity of Indonesia’s coral reef. It is also a favorite for photographers in the park. Great hammerhead sharks patrol in deep water, while the shallows are home to a stunning variety of coral and reef fish. If the current allows, slow down and search for macro life. Ghost pipefish, pygmy seahorses, nudibranchs, and flatworms are among the most exciting finds. Misool’s best-known dive sites are Kaleidoscope and Fabiacet.

BEST WRECKS IN RAJA AMPAT

Shinwa maru.

If you’ve ventured out of Raja Ampat to dive the Shinwa Maru, you’ll most likely stick around for more than one tank. This massive Japanese freighter is a photographer’s favorite thanks to its natural bomb damage, unique historical artifacts, and wealth of macro life. Qualified divers can choose between a variety of penetration routes and super-deep exterior dives.

CROSS WRECK

This is the region’s most accessible shipwreck, lying on a sandy bottom in 60 feet (18 meters) of water. Penetration routes through this WWII era Japanese navy patrol boat feature plenty of artifacts, including ammunition. The ocean floor surrounding the wreck is great for muck diving too, with plenty of rare and fascinating macro finds meters away from the hull.

AIRCRAFT WRECKS

Multiple WWII planes litter the sea floor around Cenderawasih Bay, and new ones are found all the time. Most liveaboard itineraries visit at least one airplane wreck, and the P40 is the most popular. These dives offer unique photo opportunities for both macro and wide-angle shots, as well as muck diving in the sand around them.

What the Trip is Like

  • 4-6 hours snorkeling
  • 3-4 hours sailing
  • Occasional kayaking, paddle boarding, and short-moderate hikes
  • Day 4: 4-5 hours snorkeling, including 2 hours in an area with extremely strong current, 3-4 hours sailing, and 1 hour hike

Ocean Conditions

The seas are generally calm in Raja Ampat, but unexpected squalls or high winds can create rough ocean conditions at any time. There is a higher chance of rough seas on Days 4 and 6 when our crossing takes place in the open ocean. The remainder of the sailing is in much more protected waters, and sea sickness is typically not a problem.

Medical Attention and Evacuation in Remote Destinations

The Raja Ampat journey takes place in an extremely remote and uninhabited archipelago in the Pacific. In the case of serious illness or injury, medical attention and swift evacuation are not available. Once we sail from Sorong, we are far away from towns and medical facilities. In the case of serious illness or injury, we will make every effort to reach medical facilities as soon as possible, but be aware that it may take the boat days to return to the port of Sorong. If you have health or medical issues of concern, please discuss them with your physician before considering this trip.

The snorkeling was unparalleled. We explored two different reefs every day and each was spectacular. The soft coral snorkel was particularly awe-inspiring. I've been snorkeling for many years and have never seen anything like the corals and animals we saw on this trip. The guides were fabulous, pointing out animals and plants I would never have seen on my own. I really enjoyed the company of the other guests as well as the guides and crew. If it weren't so far away, I'd go again next week!"

Mission Viejo, CA

"This was an amazing trip, absolutely the best 12 days I’ve ever experienced."

Santa Fe, NM

"A lifetime experience in this exquisite part of the world, so removed from civilization as we know it."

"This is a truly wonderful snorkeling adventure in a beautiful place with a very experienced guide. It is the trip of a lifetime for people who like to snorkel."

Arroyo Grande, CA

"Tremendous trip. It met or exceeded all my expectations; I would recommend it very highly. Environmentally, the area visited is of world-wide significance and this value was respected throughout the trip—right down to being alert to unintended minor damage to reefs that might be caused by less skilled snorkelers."

Seattle, WA

"This was a mind-blowing experience for me. I've been a diver for many years and have never seen anything like what we saw on this trip. Other areas in the world where I have dived or snorkeled don't even come close to Raja Ampat."

Danville, CA

"This was a great snorkeling experience. We got to see 22 different reefs—lots of variety—and didn't see any other boats for 8 days—truly amazing."

Berkeley, CA

"We love to snorkel and this is the best in the world. The fish are incredible—a super underwater experience."

East Falmouth, MA

"A superb trip and extremely good value."

"Very well organized and executed by a most competent leader. I have participated in years of SCUBA live aboard and land-based trips and Din's demeanor and personal attention beats all. Even though it was billed as a snorkeling trip you come away feeling like it was a lot more."

Los Gatos, CA

"Stunning trip and great to have an experienced trip leader who is flexible and knowledgeable of the conditions of the area to ensure we got the best possible experience."

Christchurch, New Zealand

"The awareness of just how remote we were and the raw beauty of the surroundings seemed like a dream to me! There were moments on this trip that truly filled my soul."

Sausalito, CA

"The remoteness of the region and the colors of the sea, coral, and fish are beyond words!"

"I've gone on at least 12 group trips, and this was one of the very best. I highly recommend that people go to Raja Ampat soon since the coral is still living and beautiful here, unlike most places in the world. I can truly say that I have never been as relaxed as I was on this journey; it was hard coming back to reality! I can't rave about this trip enough—10 out of 10!"

"There are not enough words to describe the trip. It was just amazing and I loved every minute. Lots of laughter and fun out of the water and the snorkeling was beyond what I expected. I would love to go back."

• Maybe the otherworldly experience of drifting among masses of rare stingless jellyfish in an actual forest pool of evolution?

• Or for a more terrestrial experience, how about an early morning cool and misty forest walk to see the secret and seductive dancing of the iconic birds of paradise?

If this sounds like you then let us bring you to one of the real Jewels of Indonesia – the islands of Raja Ampat.

BE PREPARED TO BE FLEXIBLE

Our mission is to provide the best experience possible for our guests given the current conditions and when unexpected opportunities for adventure may present themselves along our cruise routes. Sometimes weather conditions, tides or other local factors dictate that we need to vary from the published route, and at times there are special opportunities to explore and discover new locations, events and activities. These explorations will always be a definite enhancement to the published itinerary and will be undertaken after discussion and agreement among guests. Ultimately, the boat captains and your tour leader will make decisions to maximize trip safety and your overall enjoyment, so please come prepared to be flexible!

The More You Know The More You See

Our tour leaders are a wealth of information on the regions we visit and will prepare you for each activity with on board talks and presentations to give you a greater understanding of the different experiences you will have each day. They will also act as your cross cultural bridges to all the people we meet along the way, so feel free to ask them to translate when talking to local Indonesian people on your travels.

- You will be greeted by your SeaTrek tour leader at the airport in the morning and taken to the boat, and after settling into your new home for the next ten days we will set course for the southernmost islands part of the Raja Ampat National Park.

-   After an alfresco lunch, we will stop off for our first swim and snorkel of the voyage on a coral reef, before continuing on our way south. Pre-dinner cocktails will be served on the back deck as the sun goes down and brings an end to our first day as we cruise on through the night.

raja ampat boat trip

- Today we wake up at the eastern end of the Misool archipelago, a picturesque chain of jungle-covered limestone islets with spectacular corals reefs offering some fantastic snorkelling.

- We will spend the day exploring the many inlets and bays and beaches with some trekking, swimming and snorkelling. We will also break out the kayaks and paddle boards for some seaborne adventuring.

- After our full day of island-hopping we will spend a quiet night at anchor under the stars.

raja ampat boat trip

- After an early breakfast, our day starts with a swim and a snorkel through a giant dome-roofed sea cave filled with massive stalagmites and stalactites, undoubtedly one of the areas most memorable experiences.

- We will then move on to the mysterious stingless jellyfish lake, one of only 20 in the world where these amazing creatures exist and swim amongst the many thousands of stingless animals.

- Using our tenders, we will visit some mysterious skull cairns in sea-cave cemeteries, and prehistoric cave paintings, estimated to be anything between 3,000 to 5,000 years old and depicting various human figures and huge human hands, fish and flowers.

raja ampat boat trip

- Today we will try our best to see the Lesser Birds of Paradise in the wild, an unforgettable experience for anyone lucky enough to see them. We will rise early and walk through the forest to hopefully see the birds as they dance around in their ‘lekking’ trees.

- In the afternoon, an underwater exploration will take place as we snorkel around one of the best coral reefs in the world. School of fish hanging out in the deep and colourful sea fans sticking out of the wall.

- Late in the afternoon, we will be watching the sunset while sailing our way to Batanta island.

raja ampat boat trip

- Today, the island of Batanta offers us a change of scenery and a chance to stretch our legs with an adventurous jungle trek filled with birds, butterflies and insects.

- Starting at a local village, our guides will lead us through the forest on a short walk to the first of two waterfalls, where we can swim and cool off. The fitter of the group can keep heading upriver where a second, larger cascade awaits.

- After getting back to the boat and having lunch, we will go snorkelling and get the paddle boards and kayaks in the water, before heading north later in the afternoon and overnight cruise to a beautiful group of islands.

raja ampat boat trip

- In the morning, we will visit a pearl farm tucked away in a protected, deep water cove and tour the facilities to learn how this precious commodity is produced and harvested. Pearling is an important industry and provides employment for many people in the local area.

- We will spend the afternoon snorkelling and kayaking amongst three small islands linked together by some pristine coral reefs, or you can simply choose to relax on the beach.

raja ampat boat trip

- This morning will explore a small group of limestone islands filled with coves and beautiful reefs.  After breakfast, we will go ashore for a short climb to a vantage point where we can survey our beautiful surroundings, before heading out to snorkel on the beautiful reefs.

- During lunch we will head to a small island located between Gam and Mansuar where the currents bring rich nutrients to the coral reefs. The three famous jetties offer so much underwater life scenery – schools of fish, the shy black tip reef sharks, the elegant spadefish and the magnificent giant clams.

raja ampat boat trip

- Central Raja Ampat stores many magical underwater gems. Today, we will be exploring some of them.

- Starting with a visit to a local village in the central of Mansuar island which promotes sustainability through their education centre, solar-powered street lights, and sustainable fishing practice through local community effort. Its house reef offers an abundance of marine life which is why we will spend the rest of our morning snorkelling here and if we’re lucky, maybe a sight of a wobbegong shark.

- Another underwater adventure awaits in the afternoon as we make our way to the eastern point of Mansuar. Famous for its school of big fish, you can see humphead wrasse and school of giant trevalley swimming next to each other, maybe greeted by the resident hawksbill turtle.

- Tonight, we will have a beach BBQ and party with the crew under the stars.

raja ampat boat trip

- Today sees a super early start as we head off into the forest in search of the incredible Red Bird of Paradise. The walk takes about 40 minutes, and as we arrive at the bird site at dawn, if we are lucky, we will see the incredible mating displays of these birds in the canopy of the rainforest. This is a David Attenborough moment if ever there was one.

- We will then walk through a colourful local village and meet the people who call this wonderful corner of paradise home and see how they live their daily lives.

- Back on the boat we will head off for some more great snorkelling in the famous wall on the east of Gam island before we sail overnight to an island nearby Sorong.

raja ampat boat trip

- We will wake up anchored in Sorong and have one last hearty breakfast on board of the Ombak Putih before venturing on our very last adventure in the Doom Island with traditional transportation called Becak. During the First World War, the island served as an administrative centre of Dutch Empire administration in West Papua and continued to become the core of Sorong for some time before the city grew in mainland Papua. During the Second World War, Japanese forces occupied and fortified the island, building a network of tunnels and bunkers. The island was attacked by American and Australian aircraft throughout the war. Following the war, a fishing station was briefly established on the island before it was moved to Manokwari.

- After our little adventure, we will bid farewell to the ship and her crew. Our tenders will take you ashore for your transfer to the airport for your onward travel.

We had an Blast on this Trip with so many Impressions we will never 4get. If you dont mind to sleep in fairly basic Conditions and be together with 12 Ppl and 6 Crew for some Nights this is the Trip 4 You. The Pricing is absolutely correct and you won`t find anything comparable in Sorong. The Crew and the Guides are ALL good hearted and fine People and the Boss Deni cares a lot about his Crew. We had an excellent Cook on Board who`s Name was Marvil and we enjoyed every Meal. The Tourleader Roli is such an great Guy and his daily Briefings are legendary. He is also one of the best underwater Photographers i ve seen. We did an 10D10N Trip to Misool and the Speedboat was operated by Roja and Ciko the two Guys who kept us safe during every Snorkeltrip and Trekking to Caves and Mountains and showed us an incredible and intact Eco System above and under Water. We highly recommend to book your Trip with this Guys.. you wont find anything better in this Priceclass

For two weeks in February this year, I had one of my most exciting live aboard of my life with Raja 4 adventure, guys. Roli and his team performed an outstanding effort in order to make us to feel the real spirit of raja Ampat. Everything was perfect, in terms of safety, food and the friendly environment as well. , snorkeling, swimming from the first to the last day of the trip were breathtaking. I`m looking forward to go again with you guys...where? Of course Misool☺️So .. all in one "raja 4adventures".. Highly recommended!!!

— Dorel Almasan Romania (February 2020)

I had a 16 day cruise with Deni Raja Ampat Adventures in February 2020 and it was a totally positive experience. I recommend visiting the Raja Ampat by boat, it is definitely the best way. The truly unparalleled crew guaranteed us maximum assistance during snorkeling and for any request and need, even in anticipation of the landing and subsequent movements. Next year I plan to return to visit Misool, towards the south.

— Carla N Italy (February 2020)

the paradise where you are, so I ask you what is worth more? The very kind staff, Roli the wonderful brother of Deni, took us to wonderful places, always available, the staff equally kind and attentive, a note in particular to Bryan our chef, with what he had pampered us with his dishes, he made us find banana pancakes every afternoon after returning from our Snorkeling tour. In any case, at the end of the trip I would do the same experience again. I recommend it to people with a lot of adaptability and few needs.

— Papavero Bergamo Italy (May 2019)

— Julien Bs France (February 2017)

I had my second trip with Roli and crew, this time to Misool. It was again great, beautiful snorkelling and hikes (more coral than sea life compared to Wayag), the crew is still very friendly and accomodating. The only thing to be mindful is that if you have food allergies or intolerancies, rather bring your own food with you. Regardless, I will definitely go with them again, for the 3rd time :)

— Tamas Mihalovits Hungary (February 2017)

Roli and Deni, and the whole staff of Raja Ampat Adventure are my good friends. The first time I ever made a boat trip with them was in 2013. Since then I returned already 5 times in the past 10 years. I owe them the best experiences of my life, and as I have known them for 10 years already, they are part of my life. Being on the boat is the best way to relax and get away from the civilization, from internet, from emails. needless to say, the beauty of nature is unbelievable, and it is hard to say which is more beautiful, the landscape above the waterline, or the underwater world. Raja Ampat is a pristine heaven, still largely unspoilt and looks the way Earth might have looked for millions of years, undisturbed, untouched. The boat takes around 11 guests at one time, and it is always fun to get to know other people and experience this remote piece of paradise. The facilities are simple, but clean, the beds are comfortable, and you can also always sleep under the open sky, on the top deck. Most of the activities center around snorkeling, and each day you do around 4-5 sessions, each at least 1 hour long. There is also a lot of trekking and climbing hills. You can either do a trip to Wayag, with the classic route, or to Misool, which is just as beautiful, and even more interesting and less frequently visited. You will always have lot of peace during these trips. Muhamad is your captain, and the other guys, Roni, Marvil, Brian, Ciko will take care of you in teh small boat, in the water, in teh kitchen, and will make sure you are always in a good mood! I can only recommend you to join them. I have already convinced several friends to go on the boat and they have not regretted it! I for sure will keep on returning.

Raja Ampat: A Travel Guide To Indonesia’s Secret Paradise

Piaynemo, Raja Ampat

This Raja Ampat travel guide will help you plan your trip, showing you how to get there, the best activities on offer and plenty more tips to make your adventure stress free!

Raja Ampat in Indonesia is home to some of the most beautiful islands on the planet. There’s spectacular snorkelling and diving, and some of the friendliest people you’ll ever meet. Isn’t it time you explored this secret corner of paradise?

Raja Ampat islands - clusters of small islands that are so beautiful

Raja Ampat isn’t like anywhere else on the planet. Well, not that I’ve been to yet anyway. It’s raw, rugged and the closest thing to paradise that I’ve found.

Above the ground exotic birds call to each other, gigantic colourful butterflies flutter by, and hermit crabs dance along the sand.

Below sea level majestic lion fish prowl through the waters past tropical fish, purple pufferfish, turtles, dolphins and sharks.

These Indonesian waters are the most biodiverse in the world, and if you pop your head under for a moment you’ll be amazed at what you find.

Along with stunning landscapes, incredible snorkelling, diving and endless sunshine, there’s a heart and soul to this region of Indonesia. The people. The people with smiles on their faces. People who have no doubt been through some serious hardships given the tricky political situation in West Papua.

But they were open, welcoming, and made our experience extra special.

So forget Bali and the Gili Islands, let’s go on an adventure to Indonesia’s secret paradise… Raja Ampat.

Where Is Raja Ampat?

Raja Ampat is an archipelago comprising over 1,500 small islands located off the coast of West Papua, north-east of Java and Bali. Click around this Raja Ampat map to get your bearings!

How To Travel To Raja Ampat?

The journey isn’t simple, so you do have to work for your paradise adventure! While I can’t guarantee this Raja Ampat travel blog will be 100% up to date with information for the area in the archipelago that you’re trying to reach, hopefully it will give you some pointers.

  • From Jakarta, fly to Sorong (4 hour 5 mins). Some flights will go via Makassar.
  • From Sorong, take a taxi to the harbour (15 mins).
  • Once at the harbour take the Bahari Express ferry to Waisai, which is located on the island of Waigeo. The express ferry takes 2 hours.
  • From there you’ll need to arrange a taxi boat with your Raja Ampat accommodation. Most home stays and hotels will organise your transfers.

Things To Do In Raja Ampat

Diving and snorkelling in raja ampat.

The diving and snorkelling in Raja Ampat is said to be among the best in the world with over 1,400 species of fish enjoying its reef. It’s often top of peoples scuba bucket lists !

Snorkelling in Raja Ampat, Indonesia

While staying at Raja Ampat Dive Lodge  I snorkelled from the end of the pier and saw a plethora of tropical fish including angelfish, needlefish, several lionfish, batfish, and even a purple pufferfish. In the evenings we spotted walking sharks close to the shore. The coral was beautiful too.

Also in the incredibly diverse waters are bluefin jacks, manta rays, grey reef sharks, blacktips and whitetips along with the elusive wobbegong – a type of shark that’s only found in this region. The Raja Ampat diving is truly off the scale!

After a long day in the water, there’s no better way to unwind than by watching one of Raja Ampat’s incredible sunsets.

Visiting Islands In Raja Ampat

A visit to Arborek really is a must! The island is open to tourism with kids greeting visitors with traditional dances and a tour of the village. It’s a tiny place with around 200 residents, a school, church, a few home stays and basic stores.

Arborek Village, Raja Ampat

It’s a picture-perfect paradise island with no cars, a few colourful boats, and bright yellow and blue fencing. I fell a little bit in love! People have asked me “is Raja Ampat safe?” While I would never say anywhere in the world is 100% safe, people live a quiet life on these islands and there’s very little to stress about. I definitely felt safe during my trip. It’s hard to know how I would have felt if I’d been a solo female traveller in Raja Ampat.

Meeting the kids in Arborek Village, Raja Ampat

Visit Piaynemo – Stunning Small Islands In Raja Ampat

When you’re planning your Raja Ampat itinerary, you just have to visit Piaynemo. This is the most famous view of the archiplago. I’d seen photos before visiting and assumed they must have been photoshopped… but no. It really was as magical as I’d hoped! From our hotel it was around 30 minutes by boat, then a hot and sweaty trek up to the viewpoint.

We couldn’t wait to dive into the greeny-turquoise water after to cool down!

This really was a highlight of my time in Raja Ampat.

Kayaking In Raja Ampat

Many hotels have kayaks you can rent out. It’s a great wait to cruise along the coastline of the islands, but be wary of strong currents.

Where To Stay In Raja Ampat

I stayed at Raja Ampat Dive Lodge which was wonderful! The small wooden bungalows on the beachfront were cute, cosy and located seconds from the sand. The restaurant served a decent buffet breakfast and even cooked up a BBQ one evening! There was AC, wifi (although slow, come on, you’re in paradise!) and snorkel gear and kayaks for rent.

When To Visit Raja Ampat

The best time to visit Raja Ampat is between October and April, with the best conditions towards the end of the year. It’s pretty much bang on the equator with average highs of 31 Celsius and lows of 25. June and July are the wettest months, but in tropical paradise you get used to seeing storm clouds most days. Thankfully they pass pretty quickly!

Raja Ampat, Indonesia

How Much Does It Cost To Visit Raja Ampat?

Prices will vary, but here’s a rough guide:

  • Return flights from Jakarta to Sorong: £200. Taxi from Sorong Airport to Sorong Harbour: IDR 100,000 (£6.20)
  • Raja Ampat visitor permit fee for international visitors: IDR 1,000,000 (£62.64).
  • Express ferry tickets: IDR 130,000 (£8.14) for economy class or IDR 220,000 (£13.78) for a VIP ticket.
  • Total travel costs (excluding food & extra activities): £282.62 ($353 USD or IDR 4,622,228)

F.Y.I. One night at Raja Ampat Dive Lodge on Mansuar Island costs £239 for a double room. They offer plenty of packages which include dives. Find out more here .

Useful Information For Visiting Raja Ampat

As the islands are pretty cut off, it’s important to organise currency before you take the trip. Some hotels will accept credit cards but it’s not something to rely on.

Cover up. It’s important to show respect when visiting villages and you’ll see signs reminding you not to wander around in bikinis.

I read that Sunday is considered family day for a lot of people (for religious reasons) so avoid this for travelling or taking part in activities.

Remember, Raja Ampat isn’t a tourist destination like Bali, so expect the experience to be a little more rough and ready! It’s all part of the adventure…

I hope this Raja Ampat blog helps you plan your trip. Huge thanks to the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism for inviting me on the #TripOfWonders as part of their #WonderfulIndonesia campaign. As always, opinions are my own!

Chloe! Love your story! Thanks for sharing. I really love this area of the world.

Thanks Victor – it really was a magical part of the world to visit 🙂

Oh my god, it really does look like paradise! I wish I had known about it before my Indonesia trip earlier in the year! Looks like you had a blast x

It looks like you had an amazing trip too but yes, Raja Ampat really was incredible! I’d love to see how it develops over time. Fingers crossed it’ll stay reasonably untouched. So stunning!

you should visit spot called balbulol and dafalen when in raja ampat. also there is jellyfish lake, on some of the island there is human bone up there.. and also there is weird unique small rock formation idk the name of the spot tho.

Thanks for the tips! I’d love to return but sadly I think it’s many years off! Such a magical part of the world.

any idea where we can rent sea kayaks to explore on our own. thanks

Hi Shaun, most hotels will have them available for rent. They had them at our hotel – Raja Ampat Dive Lodge. Thanks

Hello! We are hoping to make this trip later this year, any must-see’s? Did you need any vaccinations? Also do we need to know any of the language or do the locals mostly speak English?

Hi Millie! Lovely to hear from you! I got my rabies boosters done as I wasn’t up to date on those but I’d already had quite a few vaccines before. Some people didn’t bother so I don’t know how high the risk is right now – definitely worth checking the World Health Org site to make sure you’re happy. Some people working in the hotels and tourism industry speak bits of English but on the islands there were local dialects. It’s always good to get a few words in the local lingo I find – hello / goodbye / thanks will get you far! Have an amazing time – Piaynemo is my must-see. But it’s so beautiful and untouched generally, you’ll love it!

This look so beautiful! I am going to put this on my bucket list for Indonesia next time I go! Beautiful photos and great tips!

Thanks for your comment Aaren – I loved it there!

So I’m going by myself in December and I was wondering as a female what is covering up actually mean? Are shorts and a tank top considered not covering up?

Hi Kim, you should be fine dressed like that. It’s more about not wearing swimwear around the islands with the locals.

wow, this is absolutely amazing, it really makes me put Raja Ampat as my top destination for next year! I have a friend who recently went diving there, she absolutely loved Cape Kri, said it was the experience of a lifetime. I so want to get there myself and explore everything!!!!

It’s SUCH an incredible place Serena! Hope you make it there soon!

Hi what time of the year did you go to get all those beautiful days of sunshine? Me and my boyfriend are going in 3 weeks until June 7 and I’m wondering if we risk getting rain/wind every day! :/ Beautiful blog

Hi Sarah, Hope you’re well! Raja Ampat is SOOO amazing! You’re going to love it. It’s one of the top places I’ve ever travelled to. We were there in October time, but I think they get a lot of sunshine all year around. Also, when it rains, it’s often only one big downpour and then it brightens up again. Fingers crossed it’s nice for you!
