3. FWD Travel Insurance

FWD travel insurance offers some of the cheapest travel insurance plans in Singapore, so this is a budget-friendly option which still offers you great value for every dollar.

Here’s a quick run-through of the price and benefits offered by FWD travel insurance plans:

When you’re purchasing FWD travel insurance, the COVID-19 benefits are an add-on. The price of the COVID-19 add-on costs between $11 to $22  depending on the part of the world you’re travelling to. If you choose to add it on, it’ll give you comprehensive coverage of the following:

  • Trip disruption
  • Trip cancellation
  • Overseas hospital cash
  • Hospital cash while in Singapore
  • Medical expenses
  • Emergency medical evacuation and repatriation

The plan reimburses your travel-related expenses if you are diagnosed with COVID-19 no more than 30 days before your scheduled departure date, or if you have to change your itinerary because of a COVID-19 diagnosis while overseas. You also get to claim medical expenses and a hospital cash benefit if you get hospitalised overseas or for up to 14 days in Singapore upon your return.

On top of that, there’s also an automatic policy extension of up to 21 days should you be prevented from travel as per foreign government regulations due to:

  • You contracting COVID-19; or
  • You or your travel companion needing to be self-isolated due to being in close contact with someone diagnosed with COVID-19

4. Starr Travel Insurance

Starr’s travel insurance is called Starr TraveLead Comprehensive , and they’re certainly a leader in terms of how customisable their insurance is. When signing up, medical coverage (including COVID-19 coverage) is automatically included in all plans, but you can choose whether or not you want to add trip coverage (e.g. document loss, travel delay) and baggage coverage (e.g. baggage delay). Then, you can also easily add riders for Golf Protection, Cruise Vacation, Scuba Diving, and Snow Sports.

Starr TraveLead Comprehensive comes in 3 tiers: Gold , Silver and Bronze . While all are pretty comprehensive (as the name suggests), we advise you go for at least Silver . This affords you S$500,000 overseas medical coverage, as well as $30,000 medical coverage for COVID-19 and $250 coverage for COVID-19 related trip curtailments and cancellations. You won’t get the COVID-19 trip curtailment/cancellation coverage in the Bronze plan, which only offers $15,000 for COVID-19 medical coverage, so go for Silver or Gold.

Here are the prices and coverage amounts for each tier. Prices are given with trip coverage included in the plan.

Note: Starr also has a travel insurance called Starr TraveLead Essential, which also comes in Bronze, Silver and Gold tiers. They look very attractive because of their low prices—for example, Starr TraveLead Essential Bronze costs just $20 for a 7-day trip to an ASEAN destination.

However, unless you’re on a really tight budget, I wouldn’t recommend these plans. For example, while the Starr TraveLead Essential Bronze plan does cover you for $200,000 worth of overseas medical expenses (which is already the bare minimum), it doesn’t cover you at all for trip cancellation and loss/damage of baggage. Neither do the Silver or Gold tier plans.

5. MSIG Travel Insurance

MSIG travel insurance is categorised into 3 plans— Standard , Elite , and Premier . The cheapest, basic plan still offers pretty adequate coverage in medical emergencies and trip cancellations or delays.

Here’s a quick run-down of the plan’s key benefits:

One more unusual area of coverage that MSIG includes is emergency dental expenses. You get $5,000 to $15,000 in coverage, depending on the travel insurance tier you select.

MSIG’s Areas A and B refer, roughly speaking, to ASEAN and Asia respectively. Here’s a more comprehensive list of the countries in each category:

  • Area A : Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam
  • Area B : Australia, China (excluding Inner Mongolia and Tibet), Hong Kong, India, Japan, Korea, Macau, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and including countries in Area A
  • Area C : Worldwide

MSIG Travel Insurance’s COVID-19 coverage is an automatic inclusion to its travel insurance plans and offers the following coverage:

  • Trip cancellation, postponement, shortening, disruption
  • Replacement of traveller
  • Overseas medical expenses
  • Emergency medical evacuation
  • Overseas quarantine daily cash allowance

This is quite a decent list of benefits, but do note that daily hospital cash allowance is missing from the list.

6. Singlife Travel Insurance

Singlife travel insurance comes in 3 tiers— Lite , Plus , and Prestige . The price you pay and the coverage you’ll get increase with each plan.

Here are Singlife travel insurance’s key prices and benefits:

On top of the coverage above, Singlife also covers you for chiropractor and/or chinese physician treatment : $250 ($50 per visit) for Lite, $500 ($75 per visit) for Plus, and $1000 ($100 per visit) for Prestige.

As far as COVID-19 coverage goes, here’s a quick run-down:

  • Emergency medical evacuation, repatriation
  • Overseas quarantine allowance
  • Trip cancellation, postponement, interruption

While Singlife travel insurance’s coverage for non-COVID medical expenses, travel delay and trip cancellation is comprehensive, we have to dock some points for the lack of overseas hospital cash allowance and pretty low COVID-19 trip cancellation coverage.

Also, do note that the lowest tier, Lite, doesn’t come with certain coverage, such as trip cancellation or postponement for any reason and COVID-19 overseas quarantine allowance.

7. Etiqa Travel Insurance

Do you hate making travel insurance claims? I do. That’s why when a friend of mine told me that you don’t need to make any claim on Etiqa to receive compensation for your flight delay, I was very intrigued.

I’ve been fortunate—all my recent flights have left on time. But from what I’ve heard from friends who weren’t as lucky on their recent travels, it’s true that Etiqa has the most seamless claim process for flight delays . All you need to do is enter your flight details when purchasing your insurance. Etiqa will monitor your flight and know if your flight is delayed (to count as a delay, it needs to be pushed back at least 3 consecutive hours). If that happens, they’ll transfer money into your Etiqa TiqConnect eWallet—even if you don’t submit a claim! You can then encash that sum via PayNow.

On top of this travel delay claim benefit, Etiqa also provides flight check-in reminders and baggage belt collection details via SMS when you land. Now that’s what I call service.

Etiqa’s travel insurance is called Tiq Travel Insurance  and comes in 3 tiers: Tiq Entry , Tiq Savvy , and Tiq Luxury . Here are their costs and coverage components:

Tiq Entry is sufficient to give you essential coverage for travel disruptions. But if you’ve just a little more to spend, go for Tiq Savvy . This will more than double your coverage limit for overseas medical expenses from $200,000 to $500,000 for just an additional $5 a week—that’s less than $1 a day.

Tiq by Etiqa logo

Comprehensive COVID-19 add-on, protecting you before, during and after your trip

Covers Cruise to Nowhere

Get paid upon a 3-hour flight delay, even without submitting a claim

Instant claims encashment via PayNow

24-hour worldwide emergency travel support

The only disadvantage to Tiq travel insurance is that COVID-19 coverage is not included in the base price and you’ll have to pay for their optional  COVID-19 Add-On to be covered. Some people might say this is an advantage—it gives you a greater degree of flexibility to decide if you want to have COVID-19 coverage or not, especially as COVID-19 becomes less and less prevalent. However, the fact remains that you need to pay extra for it compared to travel insurance plans where COVID-19 coverage is already included.

Here’s how much the COVID-19 Add-On will cost for a 7-day trip:

To be covered for travel disruptions and medical expenses related to COVID-19, you’ll need to add the costs above to the base Tiq travel insurance prices.

Etiqa travel insurance promotion

Enjoy  45% off Tiq Single Trip Travel Insurance plans —that means your week-long ASEAN trip now costs just $21 instead of $39 under Tiq Entry.

8. Cheapest travel insurance in Singapore

When I buy travel insurance, I don’t really care whether the insurer has 900 years of experience or if the plan comes with extra coverage for Chanel bags. Just give me the cheapest travel insurance plan can  l iao !

If that sounds like you too, you’ll be glad to know we’ve done the legwork for you. After assessing the most popular travel insurers in Singapore, the honour of cheapest travel insurance in Singapore goes to… FWD travel insurance .

FWD Premium

But as the old saying goes, you get what you pay for. Will you regret being a cheapskate and lose out on important coverage if the only number you look at is the price?

In a way, yes. Because FWD travel insurance is only the cheapest option with 2 caveats.

Firstly, travel insurers have limited-time discounts all the time. This is no secret. It does, however, make it difficult to compare prices when an expensive plan is on 40% off but a cheaper one is on 10% off. That’s why for the table above, we compared base prices without discounts.

But when you take into account promotional prices, which plan is the cheapest? There’s no need to open a million tabs to compare every travel insurance plan out there. Just use our travel insurance comparison tool with the “Lowest Price” filter  on. You’re welcome!

The second caveat is this: FWD came out the cheapest when we looked at its price  without its COVID-19 add-on. If you’re looking for a travel insurance plan that includes coverage for disruptions due to COVID-19 (which you should!), the real winners are  Amex travel insurance and  Starr travel insurance .

Starr TraveLead Comprehensive Bronze

9. Does travel insurance cover COVID-19?

When the COVID-19 pandemic started, most insurers did not extend their coverage to COVID-19-related mishaps. (Read more here .) The pandemic was quickly considered a “known event”, which insurers usually do not offer compensation for. So, if your flight got cancelled because of COVID-19, you’d be out of luck trying to get your insurance claims approved.

Now that practically all travel restrictions are lifted, insurance companies are rushing for a slice of the pie. Since the virus looks like it’s here to stay, most insurers are offering coverage that includes specific benefits for COVID-19. Where COVID-19 benefits aren’t already included in the policy, insurers offer an optional COVID-19 rider you can pay for to add on to the existing regular coverage.

Read your policy documents carefully to see if COVID-19 is covered, and add it on if you need to.

10. How do I choose the best travel insurance with COVID-19 coverage?

COVID-19 coverage  can vary quite a bit from insurer to insurer . When you’re shopping for the best insurance policy,  there are three things you want to look out for when it comes to choosing the best travel insurance with COVID-19 coverage:

  • Medical expenses coverage

Do note that the plans still exclude travelling against a travel advisory put in place by the Singapore government or by the local authority at your trip destination. Meaning, if your destination country goes on red alert for COVID-19, visitors are highly likely to come into contact with the virus and your insurance is highly likely to reject any COVID-19 claims. So be sure to check announcements on both ends before you depart.

Another common exclusion is failing to take precautions against COVID-19. This is worded kinda vaguely in those lengthy insurance policies, but could include not following any COVID-19 regulations at your destination or on the plane. So make sure you wear your mask whenever it’s required (or even when it’s not, if you want to play extra safe) and don’t attend any illegal raves.

11. What do I do if I get COVID-19 during or after my travels?

First of all, when booking your trip, you should retain all receipts, tickets and itineraries in case your trip has to be cancelled or altered.

At the first sign of a COVID-19 infection or related travel disruption, you should call your insurer and ask for guidance. Many insurers maintain a 24-hour hotline for travel claims. Save that number before you depart Singapore so that you aren’t stuck somewhere without wi-fi or 4G to Google the hotline.

To make a claim , you will usually have to submit your insurer’s form with supporting documents by the deadline mentioned in your contract (usually 30 days). Don’t wait until you’re back in Singapore to check which documents you need.

If you catch COVID-19 while you’re in Singapore , you will likely have to submit the results of a PCR Swab Test or Antigen Rapid Test conducted at a clinic or hospital.

It gets a bit more complicated if you’re overseas . The insurer will likely require documentation from the hospital as well as a doctor’s letter stating that you are unfit to travel and/or recommending treatment.

If you need to be quarantined overseas , you should make sure you have a quarantine order from the government, otherwise you may not be able to claim for quarantine allowance. Remember to ask for this as not all countries automatically issue such documentation.

As you strategically plan to maximise your leave days for an overdue family trip, don’t get too caught up in the planning that you forget to keep yourselves protected while on your travels! With this list of family travel insurance, it’s important to get covered with a trusted company for the smoothest bon voyage.

To give you some sense of comparison with the prices, we’ve gone ahead to customise a basic single family travel insurance plan for 2 adults and 2 children, travelling to anywhere in SEA for a week:

1. FWD Insurance

Established in 2013 in Asia, you may have been acquainted with FWD’s brand. Priding themselves in providing customers with a seamless and fuss-free interface to purchase travel insurance via their website, simply click on this link to get a customised quote based on your travel details.

Basic coverage here will cost you about $43 (as with the proposed scenario). If you’re looking for basic coverage for your family travel insurance and just need something good enough to tide you through, FWD’s a no-frills choice for you.

They do have frequent promotions going on as well – so remember to punch in TRAVEL25 to get a bang for your buck.

2. Direct Asia

Having keyed in the customised quote , their basic family travel insurance plans go for a competitive rate from $40, offering free coverage for your kids! With that, it might also be a good idea to pay a couple more dollars to bump your family travel insurance plan to the next tier to increase your coverage by a fair bit more – quite a good deal, we reckon!

However, unlike all the previous brands we’ve mentioned, this brand only allows you to opt for a single country coverage instead of a regional one.

3. Singlife

Singlife provides coverage for overseas medical expenses, trip cancellation and loss of baggage for $79. Similar to NTUC, it provides up to $250,000 worth of overseas medical expenses claims for the basic plan, as well as $5,000 worth of trip cancellation. However, if you choose to opt for the advanced family travel insurance plans, Singlife does offer unlimited overseas medical expense claims at higher premiums.

Besides, this plan also offers free extensions including some COVID-19 related issues, as well as disappearance, terrorism, and motorcycling. If you’re a golfer or winter sport fanatic, this insurance plan might also catch your eye for other optional extensions.

Remember to key in TRAVEL18 for 18% off your purchases with your customised quotes .

4. NTUC Income

If you prefer opting for a household brand, NTUC Income offers competitive family travel insurance prices as with FWD Insurance. Should any family member have a pre-existing medical condition, you can also opt for coverage for it.

5. Allianz Travel

If you’re looking for an all-round coverage for your trip, Allianz Travel provides one of the best coverages. From trip cancellation up to $15,000 and emergency medical coverage of up to $1 million fo the whole family, there are other heavy coverages that this family travel insurance plan offers.

Of course, it does come with a greater price of $100 and above for the basic plan (after discount code). Type travelsafer into the promo code for 35% off!

Within the same price range as Allianz Travel, AIG also offers family travel insurance plans with higher premiums. However, we can understand why – with the long list of coverage they have, it not only includes overseas medical expenses and trip cancellation, but quarantine allowance, continuing medical expenses in Singapore as well as other scenarios such as hijacking, kidnap and hostage.

7. Great Eastern

A reliable house brand for insurance policies, Great Eastern’s family travel insurance offers a comparatively higher coverage for basic needs such as overseas medical expenses and loss of personal belongings. However, the downside is that the most basic plan does not cover COVID-19 needs – so you might have to bump your plan up a little more for a greater peace of mind. Premiums typically range from $150 to $300, depending on your choice of plan.

While MSIG may also be on the higher range of premiums for their basic family travel insurance plans , their insurance products provide the flexibility of covering a whole region of travel destinations. Furthermore, there is also COVID-19 coverage, regardless of plan you choose to purchase.

Similar to AIG, MSIG also has insurance extensions for unforeseen mishaps such as terrorism, war, hijacking and kidnapping.

Do note that these prices and coverage are also based on a specific scenario as proposed. Therefore, it is important to check the specifics of your personalised family travel insurance as per your plans.

It is highly likely that some countries require you to be covered by a certain medical expense amount in USD. Further, it will also be a good idea to check the extent of COVID-19 coverage your family travel insurance plans offers, and consider if you need to buy any extensions.

Cheapest Family Travel Insurance for ASEAN and Asia Destinations

  • Purchase a travel policy and stand a chance to win a flight ticket to a destination of your choice

If you want to save on family travel insurance, Allianz Travel, Etiqa, Budget Direct, Direct Asia and FWD offer some of the cheapest travel insurance plans available. With all four basic plans costing between S$33-S$50 for a 1 week trip to the ASEAN region, whichever plan you choose can save your family up to 60% off the average cost of a family travel insurance plan.

For families who stick to the ASEAN region to visit family or go on generally short and cheap trips, Budget Direct may be a good option for you. In exchange for reducing benefits to medical, accident and baggage coverage, its single trip plans for families of 3 cost 50-55% below average. However, it does provide coverage for adventurous activities, so any activities you choose to do during your long weekend getaway will be covered (within limits).

Similar to Budget Direct, HL Assurance's Basic plan will be a great option for ASEAN and Asia trips. For a family of 3, it costs 50% below the industry average. However, it is a bit more generous with its benefits and can benefit families who are looking for a bit more value. While it doesn't increase its coverage for families, it does offer simple but useful coverage for things like missed connections, overbooked flights and medical coverage overseas and in Singapore.

Additionally, even though Etiqa Tiq's Entry plan provides decent medical and trip inconvenience coverage, as well as leniency when it comes to what they exclude from its coverage. It can be an affordable option for families who like to do simple outdoors activities like hiking, as Etiqa doesn't charge extra for adventurous activity coverage and provides coverage for a variety of sports.

If you are looking for plan that provides equal medical coverage for all members of your family, Direct Asia 150 or 200 plans , then Direct Asia will be a good fit for you. While its plans some of the cheapest, medical coverage for kids and adults are the same, so you can be sure that you won't be left with a large bill if your child ends up getting sick or gets into an accident. Best of all, children get covered for free.

FWD's Premium family plan is also one of the cheapest options for Asia, and provides coverage for things like sports, pet care and terrorism. It can be a good option for families who like to customise their coverage, as FWD offers plenty of add-ons.

Etiqa Tiq Travel Insurance

FWD's Premium family plan is also one of the cheapest options for Asia, and provides coverage for things like sports, pet care and terrorism. It can be a good option for families who like to customise their coverage, as FWD offers plenty of add-ons. FWD also offers sports equipment coverage, so families who golf, ski or snorkel with their equipment will be covered in case it gets damaged.

Cheapest Global Travel Insurance for Families

For families who casually vacation to countries worldwide (outside of Asia), Etiqa's Tiq Entry , HL Assurance , FWD's and Direct Asia offer the cheapest global travel insurance coverage.

As the cheapest, Etiqa Basic costs around S$47 for a 1-week global trip (70% cheaper than the family basic plan average); Direct Asia's 150 plan costs S$60 and HL Assurance costs around S$71. While their price gives them a good value, all three plans offer modest coverage and may not be a good fit for those looking for comprehensive policies. You can expect Etiqa to be the most lenient out of the three plans, as it covers extreme sports and terrorism.

For families who casually vacation to countries worldwide (outside of Asia), Etiqa Basic , HL Assurance , FWD's and Direct Asia offer the cheapest global travel insurance coverage.

As the cheapest, HL Assurance costs S$71 for a 1-week global trip (55% cheaper than the family basic plan average). However, our other 3 plans are similarly a great bargain with average premiums costing 45% below average. While the prices are low compared to the industry average, these plans will cover you for all types of travel-related emergencies including medical coverage, missed connections, travel delays, trip cancellations and trip curtailment. These plans also provide adventurous activity coverage, so your family can go on hiking and skiing adventures.

Best Value Travel Insurance for Families

  • DBS: 55% off Single Trips and 25% off Annual Multi-Trip Plans

The Allianz Travel Silver, Aviva, DBS Premier and FWD First plans will give you the greatest value for your dollar, with above average coverage and below average premiums for 1 week or annual ASEAN trips. Regardless of which insurer you choose, you will get a plan that is worth every dollar.

Allianz Travel's Silver plan is a great option for those looking for a high value, comprehensive plan with above average medical and trip inconvenience coverage. It also lets you claim for missing or damaged luggage that is carried on your person during travel, a rare feature among travel insurance plans.

FWD First's family plan is a great choice for those on a budget who want to maximise trip inconvenience coverage as it has almost triple the coverage compared to the industry average and below average prices for 1 and 2-week trips. It offers sports equipment coverage and covers a myriad of adventurous activities, so it could be a good option for families who are active on their trips.

Aviva's Prestige plan is a great value, albeit the most expensive, if you are planning on taking your family on longer adventure trips, as it offers great sports coverage and the highest medical and trip inconvenience coverage. You also have the flexibility to cancel your trip or change travel dates for any reason, which can benefit families with very busy schedules.

DBS Premier is also a great option as it costs below the industry family plan average for single trip ASEAN plans and is a good choice for 1 or 2 week trips, though it DBS starts to get pricey if you are looking for annual plans. Despite this, if you are looking for a plan will protect expensive family trips, DBS Premier will provide more than enough coverage with its S$45,000 limit for trip cancellation coverage.

This graph shows the value of travel insurance plans for families with 1 one child in Singapore travelling to the ASEAN region

  • Direct Asia: 40% off all plans + S$30 Prudential Gift Voucher

If you are not concerned about budget and would rather have as much coverage as possible, FWD First, DBS Platinum, MSIG Premier and Allianz Travel Gold offer some of the most comprehensive travel insurance policies on the market.

If you want a lenient policy with excellent trip inconvenience coverage, FWD's First family plan has more than double the industry average trip inconvenience coverage. Even though FWD First's annual plans cost above the industry average, its 1 and 2-week rates are fairly competitive at S$90 for a 1-week ASEAN trip compared to the family plan industry average of S$101. This makes it a good choice for families who travel 1-2 times a year, but less so for families who want to save on annual plans.

For families looking for excellent medical coverage, Allianz Travel's Platinum plan has unlimited medical and repatriation expense coverage with up unlimited medical and emergency evacuation coverage.

MSIG Premier's family plan can also be a good option for those looking to maximise medical protection as they offer 3-4x as much medical and personal accident coverage compared to the industry average.

However, if you are looking for maximum overall protection, DBS's Platinum family plan has a total of S$3,000,000 of medical, S$1,500,000 of personal accident and a total of S$57,000 of trip inconvenience coverage—3-5x higher than the industry average. Families who are active during their holidays will also appreciate the extreme sports and other outdoor activities, which will cover you if you incur a sports or activity injury. There is also coverage for your pet, golfing, funeral expenses and rental vehicle excess. However, because DBS is the priciest option, so we recommend this plan only to families who are not concerned about cost.

Allianz Global Assistance - Family Annual Platinum

Best Travel Insurance for Pregnant Women

While most travel insurers cover medical or personal accident expenses only if there is an accidental injury that causes complications with your pregnancy, Allianz and Aviva offer up to S$8,000 of pregnancy-related emergency medical expense coverage which can cover illnesses like nausea or dizziness, as well as emergency treatment related to pregnancy and childbirth.

For ASEAN and Asia travellers, Allianz Travel will be your best value, with above average medical emergency coverage (for pregnancy complications), 24/7 emergency services and above average travel inconvenience benefits.

For expecting mothers wanting to protect their trip itinerary, Aviva goes a step further by offering a free extension that will let you claim for trip cancellation, trip interruption (back to Singapore only) and replacement of a business traveller in the event of pregnancy-related emergency.

One thing to note is that there are still some exclusions to coverage including first trimester pregnancies, childbirth complications, pregnancy-related mental illnesses and fertility treatments. It is important to always read the terms and conditions to see where the limits of your pregnancy coverage begins and ends to avoid ending up in an unfortunate circumstance.

Premiums & Benefits

Cheapest annual travel insurance for families.

If you and your family travel often (more than 5-6 times per year) and you prefer to buy an annual travel insurance plan, the Wise Traveller, Allianz Travel Silver, HL Assurance, Budget Direct Basic, Etiqa Basic, and FWD Premium plans are going to be your cheapest options. Compared to the industry average of S$504.88 for an annual ASEAN plan, these plans cost 30-40% cheaper than the industry average.

HL Assurance's Enhanced plan is the cheapest annual global plan for families on the market, 40% below average, and offers comprehensive trip inconvenience coverage.

Wise Traveller is another very affordable option and can be a good fit if you care about trip inconvenience coverage. It is also one of the cheapest options for Asia Pacific coverage, with an annual premium of S$280 for 3 people.

FWD and Etiqa are great options for active families due to their flexible coverage policies, small amount of exclusions and included sports coverage. FWD can be a good fit if you care about travel inconvenience coverage, as it has higher than average coverage in that area compared to the basic plan average. On the other hand, if you want protection against possible terrorism, Etiqa' Tiq plans have terrorism cover for both you and your children. Both plans provide coverage for adventurous activities, so active families can rest easy knowing they can participate in fun excursions or ski/snowboard and still be covered.

Allianz Global Assistance - Family Comprehensive Annual Silver

FWD and Etiqa are great options for active families due to their flexible coverage policies, small amount of exclusions and included sports coverage. FWD can be a good fit if you care about travel inconvenience coverage, as it has higher than average coverage in that area compared to the basic plan average. On the other hand, if you want protection against possible terrorism, Etiqa has terrorism cover for both you and your children.

If you are travelling with a group of 4 adults or more and want to save on group insurance, DBS, FWD, Etiqa and Direct Asia will be your cheapest options. With premiums for a 1-week ASEAN trip ranging between S$19 and S$22 per person, these plans are either discounted for groups or are already cheap enough that you can purchase the plans individually and still pay less than the industry average for group plans. DBS, Direct Asia and FWD all have group options where the discounted rate ranges from 6% for FWD, 10% for Direct Asia and 20% for DBS classic.

FWD gives you a higher discount the more people you add to your group, with 20 people costing around 14% cheaper per person. It is generally a solid value option with premiums that are competitive and coverage that is comprehensive and customisable.

Etiqa's Tiq plans insure up to 10 people per trip and is one of the more affordable travel insurance options. Coverage is generally comprehensive enough, with industry average coverage for medical and trip inconvenience. It is also the first insurer to provide real time flight tracking for delays, which can be a beneficial feature when travelling with large groups. You can also include people who are visiting from overseas in your travel insurance group plan, which makes this plan a great option if you have friends from overseas who want to explore the ASEAN region with you.

If you travel with a group of friends or colleagues frequently, Direct Asia and Budget Direct offer annual plans for groups. However, you should note that Direct Asia only insures up to 6 people per trip. Also, even though Direct Asia cost around the same as DBS, it has below average for trip inconvenience and medical coverage, so it is not a good option for groups who want comprehensive coverage.

DBS will usually give you the highest coverage amounts and will cover extreme sports, but it is also slightly more expensive than the other plans on this list. However, similar to Direct Asia, DBS only covers up to 6 people per trip, so large groups may not find this plan suitable.

  • Etiqa: 45% off single-trip and 30% off annual-trip travel insurance; add'tl 10% off on Fridays)

Methodology & Considerations

To pick the best travel insurance plan for families, we collected price and benefit data of all the available plans in Singapore based on a family of 2 adults and 1 child. Every insurer approaches family travel insurance plans differently—while some offer completely different coverage amounts and separate plans, others don't differentiate individual and family plans until you get to the premiums. For the latter plans, we used their child and individual coverage to estimate the maximum coverage for two parents and one child. Since insurers may include their promotions and discounts in their pricing, all of our prices reflect the final premium after discounts are taken into consideration.

To calculate the value of each plan, we created a weighted ratio of trip inconvenience (trip cancellation, baggage loss/delay, travel delay) coverage plus medical coverage and divided it by the premium of each plan to find out the amount of coverage you'll receive per dollar of premium. This ratio helped guide our decisions to the plans that will give you the best value or will provide the best coverage. If you would like to learn more about different travel insurance plans, or you want to look at our top picks for all the travel insurance plans, you can read our guide to the best travel insurance in Singapore.

Your questions answered

(Applicable for Elite and Classic single trip 2-way plans and annual multi-trip plans, each trip must not exceed 90 days.)

If you are purchasing a new policy, we have extended the TravelSmart Premier policy to cover certain situations pertaining to COVID-19. This means that for some benefits, cover is expanded to include losses occurring after COVID-19 was a known event and could reasonably have been expected to lead to a claim. For a detailed summary of what is covered or not covered for COVID-19, please refer to the policy wording.

Before purchasing the policy, please note that: • Your Trip is under the latest permitted travel arrangement as per Singapore Government travel advisory. • For single-trip policies and annual multi-trip policies, the extension only applies if the trip is no longer than 90 days in a row. • The extension is applicable to Elite and Classic plans only. • You are not serving stay home notice or quarantined due to COVID-19 or traveled to any countries other than the list of countries permitted as per Singapore Government travel advisory within 14 days before your trip started. • If required by authorities, you must take a COVID-19 Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test or any COVID-19 equivalent test approved by Singapore authorities within 72 hours before the start of your trip and you must be tested negative. Otherwise, there is no cover under section 38a - Medical expenses while overseas, section 38b - Emergency medical evacuation, section 38c - Repatriation, section 38g - Automatic extension of cover, section 38h – Overseas quarantine allowance and section 38i - Overseas hospital allowance of this extension. • We will not cover if you, a relative, or a travel companion is diagnosed (or suspected of being infected) with Covid-19 at the point of purchase of this policy or trip.

We will automatically extend your period of insurance with no extra premium for up to 30 days if you are hospitalized or quarantined overseas as a direct result of you being diagnosed with COVID-19 by a medical practitioner while you are overseas.

Q12: If I am quarantined overseas, am I entitled to any overseas quarantine allowance under my travel insurance

We will pay you a cash benefit up to the limit that applies to your selected plan for each full 24-hour period of quarantine, if you are placed under mandatory quarantine by the local authorities as a direct result of you being diagnosed with COVID-19 by a medical practitioner while you are overseas. Quarantine benefit is payable for quarantine at designated facility which is legally recognized by respective countries’ legislation.

Q13: If I am hospitalised overseas, am I entitled to any hospital allowance under my travel insurance?

We will pay you a cash benefit that applies to your selected plan for each full 24-hour period that you are in hospital overseas as an inpatient as a direct result of you being diagnosed with COVID-19 by a medical practitioner while you are overseas.

Q14: If I contracted COVID-19 upon my return to Singapore, can I claim for medical reimbursement?

The policy is designed to protect you during your overseas journey. If you are diagnosed with COVID-19 within Singapore, after your journey, your policy will not cover the costs of any medical expenses incurred locally.

Q15: Who can purchase TravelSmart Premier?

In order to qualify for travel insurance from Great Eastern, you must meet the following criteria: • You are a Singaporean or Singapore Permanent Resident; or foreigner with a valid Employment Pass, Work Permit, Dependant’s Pass, Student’s Pass or Long Term Social Visit Pass residing in Singapore. • You are at least 18 years old at the time of purchase (only required if you are the applicant). • You are not travelling contrary to the advice of a qualified medical practitioner or for the purpose of obtaining medical treatment. • You bought the policy before you leave Singapore on your trip.

Q16: What is the difference between TravelSmart Premier Basic, Classic and Elite Plans?

The differences are in the policy features and maximum amounts payable per person per trip in the event of a claim. For the best cover and highest protection, we suggest you choose Elite plan. You can view the travel policy document and compare the amounts payable for each of the policy features, to help you choose a suitable plan.

Q17: Who is considered Family under TravelSmart Premier?

For Single Trip Policies, Family means: • An adult and/or his/her spouse and unlimited number of biological or legally adopted children; or • One (1) or two (2) adults who are not related by marriage and a maximum of four (4) children who must be at least family related (i.e. biological or legally adopted child or ward, sibling, grandchild, niece, nephew or cousin) to any one of the adults; and All insured persons under the Single Trip Family Cover must depart from and return back to Singapore together at the same time as a Family.

For Annual Multi-Trip Policies, Family means: • An adult and/or his/her spouse and unlimited number of biological or legally adopted children; and • The insured persons under the family cover are not required to travel together on a journey. However, child insured person under the age of ten (10) years must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian for any trip made during the period of insurance.

Q18: What do I indicate as the Period of Insurance?

You will need to indicate the start date and end date of your trip for the Period of Insurance. The start and end date will be based on Singapore time. • Start date: The date you are departing from Singapore (e.g. If you are departing from Singapore on 04 Dec 2020 23:50, you should indicate the Start Date as 04 Dec 2020). • End date: The date you are arriving in Singapore (e.g. If you are arriving in Singapore on 05 Dec 2020 00:30, you should indicate the End Date as 05 Dec 2020).

Q19: Can I purchase TravelSmart Premier for my child who is traveling on a student exchange program or field trip?

Yes, child below 18 years old can apply for any plans under an individual cover, provided the proposal is made in the parent or adult guardian's name. Child below 10 years old must be accompanied by an adult (parent or guardian) for the entire trip. Please note that child benefits apply.

Q20: Can I purchase travel insurance if I am already overseas?

No, you will need to purchase your travel insurance before setting off for your overseas trip from Singapore. We strongly encourage you to purchase early before departure as our travel insurance provides pre-journey coverage as well.

Q21: If I have pre-existing illness, can I still purchase travel insurance?

Yes, you may still buy the policy. However, please note that the policy does not cover any loss, damage or liability directly or indirectly arising as a result of any pre-existing medical condition. For more information, please refer to your policy documents.

Q22: I will be travelling to more than two countries and will be back to Singapore before flying to the next country (e.g. Singapore > Bangkok > Singapore > Seoul> Singapore). Can I purchase one single trip policy for the entire journey in this case?

Sounds like a great trip! In this case, you will need to buy 2 separate single trip policies because the coverage for a single trip policy ends when you return to Singapore. Alternatively if you travel more than 3 times a year, an annual policy would be recommended as your insurance costs will be considerably cheaper compared to buying a single trip travel policy each and every time.

Q23: I’m travelling to more than one country during my trip. Can I still get a policy?

Yes, please select all destinations on your itinerary.

Q24: If I am travelling overseas to seek medical treatment, can I take up travel insurance?

Our policy covers people who are travelling overseas for business or for holiday. It is not intended to cover people who are travelling to seek medical treatment.

Q25: If I am only travelling one-way, will I be able to purchase travel insurance?

Yes, please select one-way trip. Your cover will cease when you arrive at your place of residence or workplace in the destination country within 4 days, or 3 hours after you have cleared immigration in the destination country, whichever is earlier.

Q26: Does the policy cover business travel?

Yes. Your policy will cover you for business travel except for • any loss, damage or liability arising as a result of manual or hazardous work; • travel relating to your job as a licensed tour guide or staff of a travel agency; • you taking part in naval, military, air force, civil defence or police training, duties, services or operations. For more information, please refer to the policy document.

Q27: What is the maximum period of coverage for an overseas trip?

• For Single Trip Policy: 182 consecutive days for Classic/ Elite Plan and up to 30 consecutive days for Basic Plan. • For an Annual Multi-Trip Policy: 90 consecutive days for Classic/ Elite Plan and up to 30 consecutive days for Basic Plan.

Q28: When will the coverage for my travel policy start?

Our pre-journey benefits provide coverage for trip cancellation and postponement 30 days before your departure date or policy issuance date, whichever is later. For all other benefits, the coverage starts after departure from Singapore.

Q29: I am stranded in a country and my policy is expiring. Can it be extended?

The Policy will be automatically extended (all plans except Basic Plan) without any additional premium for: • Up to a maximum of 30 days if you are hospitalised and quarantined overseas as advised by the attending medical practitioner. • Up to a maximum of 7 days if: a) The conveyance in which you are travelling is delayed through no act or omission of you. b) The airport or seaport is closed due to adverse weather conditions, strike, riot or civil commotion with the result that the Trip is not completed when the Period of Insurance ceases.

Q30: What are some of TravelSmart Premier’s general exclusions?

TravelSmart Premier does not cover any loss, injury or damage arising if: • You have a pre-existing medical condition. • You are not fit to travel or are travelling against the advice of a doctor. • Any strike, riot, civil commotion, dangerous health threat, natural disaster or any events in the destination you are traveling to which a government or any relevant authority issued a public warning or statement about before you left Singapore. Please refer to the policy wording for the full list of exclusions.

Q31: Are any countries excluded from coverage?

TravelSmart Premier does not cover any travel in, to, or through UN sanction list of countries such as: • Cuba • Iran • Syria • Crimea Region • North Korea

Q33: Does being pregnant affect my travel insurance cover?

We will pay for your necessary medical treatment outside Singapore within the stipulated policy limits for pregnancy-related sicknesses. However, this is not applicable if treatment is sought in home country or for a one way trip policy.

Q34: Am I covered for emergency medical treatment including air ambulance to get me home?

Yes, if the treating doctor and our medical emergency assistance provider agree that an air ambulance is necessary, you will be covered up to the limits shown in your policy.

Q35: Who decides when emergency evacuation is necessary?

This decision will be made by consultation between the treating doctor and our medical emergency assistance provider. Please call our 24-hour Emergency Assistance Hotline at +65 6708 7453 for assistance.

Q36: If I have misplaced my receipts/ documents, can I still claim for loss of personal items?

It is important that you keep the original documentation and receipts for any items that you intend to make a claim for, as this will provide a more accurate assessment of their value. If not, your claim may be affected.

Q37: What should I do if any of my belongings are lost or stolen? Is a police report required?

You need to report the theft or loss to the police within 24 hours of discovering it, and ask them for a report in writing. If applicable, report the theft or loss to your airline, transport company or hotel and ask them for a report in writing. These documents will be required when you are making a claim.

Q38: What should I do if I fall sick or encounter an accident abroad?

Please contact our 24-hour Emergency Assistance Services Hotline at +65 6708 7453 if you need emergency medical assistance while travelling.

Q39: How do I file for a claim?

To submit a claim, you can download a copy of our claim form here: https://giexchange-sg.greateasterngeneral.com/giexchange/pdf/Travel_Claim_Form.pdf. Claims submission should be filled in with full particulars and full facts of the claim including its occurrence, detailed circumstances and extent of loss, and submit it with any supporting documents as soon as reasonably possible but no later than 30 days after the incident. At a minimum, your travel insurance to Singapore should cover trip cancellation, trip interruption and emergency medical expenses. When it comes to international travel, the US Department of State outlines key components that should be included in your travel insurance coverage.  AXA Travel Protection plans are designed with these minimum recommended coverages in mind.

  • Medical Coverage   – The top priority is making sure your health is in order. With AXA Travel Protection, you can have access to quality healthcare during your trip overseas in the event of unexpected medical emergencies.
  • Trip Cancellation & Interruptions  – Assistance against unexpected trip disruptions can dampen the mood, AXA Travel Protection offers coverage against unforeseen events.

Imagine you're all set for your vacation to Singapore. You've got your itinerary planned, bags packed, and excitement levels through the roof. However, your flight encounters unexpected delays due to severe weather conditions. Here's where AXA Travel Protection’s "Trip Delay" coverage comes to assist. While waiting for the skies to clear and your flight to take off, you find comfort in knowing that your policy offers coverage for additional expenses incurred during the delay. Whether it's the cost of a meal at the airport or an unplanned overnight stay in a hotel, your travel insurance has got you covered. In times of escalating challenges, AXA is here to assist you in devising a strategic course of action. Here’s the full list of benefits AXA Travel Protection Plans have to offer:

Medical Benefits:

  • Emergency Medical Expenses: Should you fall ill or have an accident during your trip, your policy may offer coverage for medical expenses, including hospital stays and doctor's fees.
  • Emergency Evacuation & Repatriation: In case of a serious medical emergency, your policy may include provisions for evacuation to the nearest appropriate medical facility or repatriation.
  • Non-Emergency Evacuation & Repatriation : In non-medical crises (e.g., political unrest), your policy may cover evacuation or repatriation, subject to policy terms.

Pre-Departure Travel Benefits:

  • Trip Cancellation: You may be eligible for reimbursement if you cancel your trip due to a sudden illness or injury.
  • COVID-19 Travel Insurance: Coverage is available for trip cancellation and medical expenses related to COVID-19, subject to policy terms and conditions.
  • Trip Delay: If your flight faces delays due to unforeseen circumstances, you may have coverage for additional expenses such as meals and accommodations.

Post-Departure Travel Benefits:

  • Trip Interruption: In case of an unexpected event, you could be eligible for reimbursement for the unused portion of your trip.
  • Missed Connection: If you miss a connecting flight due to delays or cancellations, this coverage may help with expenses like rebooking fees and accommodations.

Baggage Benefits:

  • Luggage Delay: If the airline delays your checked baggage, your policy might offer reimbursement for essential items like clothing and toiletries.
  • Lost or Stolen Luggage: In the unfortunate event of permanent loss or theft of your luggage, your policy may offer reimbursement for its value, assisting you in replacing your belongings.

Additional Optional Travel Benefits:

  • Rental Car (Collision Damage Waiver): Exclusive to Gold & Platinum plan policy holders, this optional benefit gives travelers extra coverage on their rental car against damage and theft.
  • Cancel for Any Reason: Exclusive to Platinum plan policy holders; this optional benefit gives travelers more flexibility to cancel their trip for any reason outside of their standard policy.
  • Loss Skier Days: Exclusive to Platinum plan policy holders, this optional benefit offers reimbursement to mitigate some costs associated with pre-paid ski tickets that you or your traveling companion cannot use due to specified slope closures.
  • Loss Golf Days: Exclusive to Platinum plan policy holders, this optional benefit offers reimbursement to mitigate the expenses linked to prepaid golf arrangements that you or your travel companion are unable to utilize due to specified golf closures.

Do I need Travel Insurance for Singapore?

Starting February 13, 2023, visitors to Singapore are no longer mandated to have travel insurance. However, it's highly advised for all travelers to consider obtaining a thorough travel insurance policy that includes coverage for medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and delays. Why? There are several reasons:

Singapore, known for its top-notch healthcare, might surprise you with unexpected medical costs. With coverage for emergency medical expenses, you're offered coverage and assistance for any unforeseen life events.

Lost Baggage: Airlines sometimes mishandle baggage, and the last thing you want is to be without your essentials in an unfamiliar place. Travel insurance offers to cover the cost of replacing necessary items, allowing you to continue.

Despite Singapore's efficient travel network, unexpected delays can happen. The "Trip Delay" benefit comes in handy, covering extra expenses like meals and accommodation so your travel hiccups do not turn into headaches.

How much does Travel Insurance cost for Singapore?

In general, travel insurance costs about 3 – 10% of your total prepaid and non-refundable trip expenses. The cost of travel insurance depends on two factors for AXA Travel Protection plans:

  • Total Trip cost:  The total non-prepaid and non-refundable costs you have already paid for your upcoming trip. This includes prepaid excursions, plane tickets, cruise costs, etc.
  • Age:  Like any other insurance type, the correlation is rooted in increased health risks associated with older individuals. It's important to note that this doesn't make travel insurance unattainable for older individuals.

With AXA Travel Protection, travelers to Singapore will be offered three tiers of insurance:  Silver,   Gold  and  Platinum . Each provides varying levels of coverage to cater to individual's preferences and travel needs.

Our Suggested AXA Travel Protection Plan

AXA presents travelers with three travel plans – the  Silver Plan ,  Gold Plan , and  Platinum Plan , each offering different levels of coverage to suit individual needs. Given that Singapore hospitals often do not accept U.S. health insurance or Medicare, we genuinely recommend travelers to consider purchasing any of these plans, particularly for the crucial coverage they offer for emergency accident and sickness medical expenses. The Platinum Plan is your go-to choice if you're looking for extra coverage for Singapore’s experience. " Cancel for Any Reason " offers greater flexibility for those unexpected twists in your travel plans and the "Rental Car (Collision Damage Waiver)" offers assistance when you're out exploring Singapore's stunning landscapes in a rental car. For avid golfers planning a swing through Singapore’s world-class golf courses, the "Loss Golf Days" benefit is exclusive to Platinum plan policyholders. This optional benefit steps in to offer reimbursement for pre-paid golf arrangements that you might be unable to utilize due to specified golf closures.

What types of medical coverage do AXA Travel Protection plans offer?

AXA covers three types of medical expenses:

  • Emergency medical expenses
  • Emergency evacuation & repatriation
  • Non-medical emergency evacuation & repatriation

Emergency Medical: Offers coverage when unexpected health issues happen, like broken bones, burns, sudden illnesses, or allergic reactions.

Emergency Evacuation and Repatriation: Can cover your immediate transportation home in the event of an accidental injury or illness.

Non-Medical Emergency Evacuation and Repatriation: Comes into play when you urgently need to leave a place for reasons not related to health. This coverage may assist with evacuation in non-medical situations, such as natural disasters or civil unrest.

Are there any COVID-19 restrictions for travelers to Singapore?

Entry into Singapore for all travelers is permitted without the need for entry approvals, pre-departure tests, on-arrival tests, quarantine, or mandatory COVID-19 travel insurance.

Traveling with preexisting medical conditions can complicate your plans, but with AXA Travel Protection, we're here to support you during your trip.
