REVIEWERS CALL OUR TOURS THE "BEST FOOD TOURS" IN NYC!

Very enjoyable. Great way to get a taste of one of Manhatten's neighborhoods, whether you are a tourist or a local. Our guide shared many wonderful stories about the history of various sites and we learned so much that was very fascinating!

walking food tour new york city

Loved the whole feel of this tour. The old versus the new cuisine - the authentic stores and the quality of the food was excellent. Matt was extremely easy going very knowledgeable and I definitely would recommend taking this tour if you have never visited the Lower East side - even if you live here in NYC :))

We had a great tour! It was cool to learn the history of the Lower East Side and the food was delicious. Our guide was knowledgeable and did a wonderful job being prepared with plates, silverware, napkins etc. he got us in and out of even the busier spots.

We had the best time! We're New Yorkers but got this tour as a wedding gift. It was a great way to spend an afternoon getting to know the neighborhood!

My husband and I had a great time on the Pizza, Beer and History tour. We got the tour as a wedding gift and we're so glad we did! We live in NYC and Adam, our awesome guide, still had tons of facts and info that we'd never heard before. And of course the pizza was delicious! Highly recommend whether you live in NYC or are visiting.

My daughter and I loved this tour. Great food and lots of it. Matt was very knowledgeable of the area and the people. Definitely recommend.

I just got back from taking a tour and I can't wait to take my next one! I had so much fun and our guide was fantastic. And the food- it was so good! I highly recommend checking out one of these tours!

It was a great way to get introduced to a number of restaurants that we otherwise might never have happened into. Some of the best falafel, great Cuban food, and fun customizing cupcakes.

My boyfriend and I did the Lower East Side Tour with Matt and it was great! Matt knew so much history and really made the tour fun. The places we went were awesome too. I can't wait to do our Food Truck Tour in December.

The best food tours in NYC

Looking for an awesome food tour? NYC’s best culinary adventures will take you everywhere from Williamsburg to Harlem.

With more than 20,000 restaurants in Gotham, it’s hard to know where to begin, unless you want to spend a fortune trying each and every single one (we wouldn't blame you if you tried). One way to try at least some of the greatest restaurants is to book a comprehensive food tour of NYC.

One of the great things about NYC is that it's made up of tons of unique neighborhoods, each with a distinct culture that plays a role in shaping its cuisine. And while you could, technically, try to hit all the best restaurants in NYC , it would be quite the challenge. From cheap eats in Chinatown to some of the best New York pizza in Greenwich Village , there’s a food tour in NYC for whatever you’re craving. Better come hungry!

Best food tours in NYC

Best of Brooklyn Half-Day Food and Culture Tour

1.  Best of Brooklyn Half-Day Food and Culture Tour

Despite Manhattan's abundance of white-clothed, Michelin-starred dining rooms, some are now touting Brooklyn as the epicenter of food culture in NYC. Either way, it's impossible to deny that Brooklyn's dining scene is incredible, from pierogis in Greenpoint's Polish stronghold to tacos and pupusas in Sunset Park and trendy farm-to-table newcomers in Williamsburg. To provide a thorough understanding of the borough's eats, this half-day tour will take you through all those neighborhoods, as well as Dumbo, the waterfront neighborhood where you'll enjoy sweets from the renowned Jacques Torres chocolate factory. The tour starts in the West Village and transportation is provided via an air-conditioned shuttle bus, for your dining comfort.

Flatiron Food and History Tour

2.  Flatiron Food and History Tour

Long considered a culinary wasteland, the Flatiron District has become, in recent years, a full-fledged foodie destination, thanks in part to the recent surge of boutique firms and tech start-ups setting up shop there. This bang-for-your-buck tour comes with six tastings at NYC favorites including Italian megamarket Eataly, historic Eisenberg’s Sandwich Shop and Beecher's Handmade Cheese. The tour also stops at the iconic Flatiron building for a photoshoot, and passes through the Union Square Farmer's Market (Saturday only) before finishing off at Bread's Bakery, where you'll sample their beloved chocolate babka right from the oven.

Pizza Walking Tour of Manhattan

3.  Pizza Walking Tour of Manhattan

What trip to New York would be complete without sampling some of the city’s best pizza? Everyone has a favorite spot and your tour guide is no exception. Choose between three nabes—Little Italy, Greenwich Village or the Lower East Side—and prepare to feast on several slices of crispy thin-crust pizza fresh out of the oven. Depending on which route you pick, you’ll visit beloved local institutions like Joe’s Pizza, Patsy’s Pizzeria and John ’s of Bleecker Street.

NYC Food Tour: Chinatown and Little Italy

4.  NYC Food Tour: Chinatown and Little Italy

NYC is a beautiful blend of different cultures, so what better way to spend a day than touring around foodie hotspots in Chinatown and Little Italy? The two-hour tour takes you to four different tastings, learning about the history and visiting local shops and establishments that have been standing for generations. You'll be led by historian tour guides and be part of a small and intimate group to get the best out of the experience

Chelsea Market and High Line Food Tour

5.  Chelsea Market and High Line Food Tour

Embark on this three-hour tour of the hippest and foodie-focused places in NYC: the High Line, Chelsea Market, and Meatpacking District. The small-group tour will be led by a guide, offering insider tips and educating you on the locations you're visiting. Savor artisanal specials picked up from the market and marvel at the architecture of the Meatpacking District. Delish!

Half-Day Hell's Kitchen Food Tour and Central Park Stroll

6.  Half-Day Hell's Kitchen Food Tour and Central Park Stroll

A food tour of Hell's Kitchen and a walk through Central Park to burn it off, what could be better? Sample food with Middle Eastern, Latin, and Indonesian backgrounds, then discover the secrets of Central Park, led by a professional guide. The group is limited to eight people so you can guarantee an intimate experience. It lasts two hours and the food tastings are included. Put on your comfiest shoes and loosest pants, you're about to indulge.

Lower East Side Bagel Tour

7.  Lower East Side Bagel Tour

Come hungry: You start this walking tour of the Lower East Side with a piping hot bagel smeared with cream cheese. The eats only get better as you visit venerable New York institutions like Katz’s Delicatessen, Russ and Daughters, The Pickle Guy and Economy Candy. It’s not all about the food either: Your guide will explain how immigrants shaped both this neighborhood and its cuisine as you walk.

Greenwich Village Food Tour

8.  Greenwich Village Food Tour

With stars like Robert de Niro and Sarah Jessica Parker having called this beautiful neighborhood home, it’s no surprise that the nearby dining options are top-notch. This tour, however, explores more of the low-key offerings frequented by the food-savvy NYU undergrads, from excellent Indian vegetable rolls from a Washington Square Park street cart to thin-crust pizza at Joe's and cupcakes at Magnolia Bakery—first popularized in the show Sex and the City . If you’re feeling tired from the walk, the two-hour tour will also make stops at the craft coffee shops on Bleecker Street.

Kosher Food Tour of the Upper West Side

9.  Kosher Food Tour of the Upper West Side

This tour focuses as much on the Upper West Side’s Jewish community life as it does the food. You’ll learn about Judaism’s traditions, rituals and religious practices like keeping kosher on this 2.5-hour tour. After stopping at a few local synagogues, you’ll nosh on tastings from kosher eateries like the Kosher Marketplace, Murray's Sturgeon Shop and Zabar's. There’s also time to do some grocery shopping, if you need to restock your supply of whitefish and lox.

New York City Pierogi Walk

10.  New York City Pierogi Walk

Past the seedy vape shops and tattoo parlors on St. Mark’s Place, you’ll find the East Village’s borscht belt. The Polish, Ukrainian and Eastern European immigrants who moved into the nabe in the ‘30s brought pierogies, kielbasa, blintzes and potato pancakes with them. Join a two-hour pierogi walk to savor the neighborhood’s history and food in one fell swoop.

Falafel in NYC - delicious greenwich village food tour.

Adam’s tour was great, nice and relaxed. It felt like a chilled stroll rather than a formal group event. My tip - arrive hungry, really hungry! We learnt a lot and even saw Chris Rock…twice. Although he’s not a guaranteed part of the tour!

tripadvisor review

I set up this tour for a corporate team building event. The tour was the perfect balance of site seeing, sampling food, and socializing. It wasn't too rushed, and certainly wasn't boring. Dante has great interpersonal skills and was able to remember all 23 of our names by the end of the tour. I would definitely recommend this tour!

Pommes Frites NYC - belgian french fries in Greenwich Village

Great tour! Adam, our guide, was very friendly and helpful. All the food tastings were fantastic! It was a relaxed and fun experience. Highly recommend these guys.

tripadvisor review

Dante was a great and fun host, and the "nice guy" tour is appropriately named. Over three hours, he took us to seven food stops in Greenwich Village and discussed the history, culture, and architecture of the village along the way. Among the food stops, there were two VERY different styles of pizza, one of which I had never heard of (and I eat a lot of pizza). It was a really fun time!

Rice balls at Arancini

Such a friendly guy, Ian introduced himself to each of the 12 in our group, and he constantly checked in with us to be sure we were enjoying ourselves. The West Village is a fascinating web of small streets and interesting businesses, particularly the restaurants on the tour.

tripadvisor review

Today my husband and I did the Greenwich tour with Dante. We were recommended by a friend, and couldn’t have been happier! Not only did we eat great food, but we learned about the area and history as well. You can truly tell how much Dante loves his hometown, but I was more pleased to see the great relationship he seemed to have with the restaurants we went to. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a taste of the city.

tripadvisor review

We enjoyed this tour! All the samples were so delicious and we were so full at the end! Dante is so friendly and knowledgeable and we felt like family immediately. We cannot wait to purchase the Greenwich Village tour next! Make your reservation immediately, as this is a great way to learn about the Lower East Side and all of its iconic places!

tripadvisor review

This was our second tour with Dante, and it was like seeing the city with an old friend. Very relaxing and fun afternoon! Loved the variety of foods - a great way to sample many different foods, and Katz deli pastrami sandwich was delicious. Loved the doughnuts from Doughnut Plant and pastries from Russell and Daughters as well. Dante is a great tour guide and this tour is an excellent way to get an overview of the foods of NYC.

A Top NYC Food Tour on TripAdvisor

tripadvisor logo

My boyfriend and I decided to take a food tour of Chinatown and Little Italy to try some new foods and learn about the culture/ history of these neighborhoods and Hannah did not disappoint! As a picky eater, this was a great way to open up a bit more while learning + sightseeing the area. Hannah provided great insight into how these neighborhood + cuisine developed, answered tour and non-tour related questions, and made this a great experience for us. You could tell Hannah truly enjoys sharing this experience and I would recommend this to tourist and locals alike!

A wonderful experience with great food, lots of history, and fun! Shout out to our guide Lily who absolutely made the experience. She was knowledgeable and added lots of fun to the tour!! 11/10, would recommend and even more so if Lily is the guide!!

This tour is amazing. Liz, our guide, was very personable and knowledgeable. We had an array of delicious food from various ethnicities (and plenty to fill you up). We enjoyed learning the history of Nolita and walking around to see it. I also love this is a woman owned small business. I highly recommend the tour!

Liz S was amazing and a great tour guide! She gave the history and information about what we were eating and we learned a lot on the trip.

Amazing tour - Maryana was THE BEST. Delicious food and so much history, perfect activity to do with teens.

The tour was amazing! I consider myself a foodie and this met all my needs. Valerie was the BEST tour guide - she is full of energy and made the entire tour so much fun. I asked what other tours she did just so I can come back! Definitely would recommend 10/10!!

We took 4 food tours while on our trip and this one is by far the best! Patrick was FANTASTIC and got us trying foods that we never would have stumbled upon on our own. We sampled tons of wonderful food and learned so much history about the city. We left full and will definitely do it again next visit!

Food Tours New York City: Create Your Own New York City Food Tour in SOHO

By: Author Girl with the Passport

Posted on Last updated: January 24, 2024

Categories New York City

I love food (and food tours in New York City ) just as much as the next person. Especially since they are one of the many great outdoor activities in NYC .

Just ask my bank account and my therapist and they’ll tell you that my affinity towards foodie travel is REAL.

Self-guided food tours of New York City are probably one of the things that I spend most of my money on.

But you Know What Really Grinds My Gears?

When you shell out $40 a person just to go on some ragtag food tours in New York City, where you are served minuscule food samples and rushed through every stop while the tour guide stares you down as you eat.

Maybe that part is just me since I inhale my food and usually get three samples to share…with myself. But moving on.

Yeah, Thanks But No Thanks.

And while yes, there are a ton of AMAZING food tours and neighborhood tours in NYC ,  I always like exploring a city’s food culture on my own through an awesome,  NYC food tour self-guided since I’m my own best tour guide.

Portions you will find all along your New York City food tour.

I can time to stop where I want, savor the food I enjoy, and explore the city at my own pace.

Ya Feel?

That’s why I am giving you this food tour itinerary for SOHO New York City (aka the area in Manhattan that lies between Houston and Canal and Bowery and 6th Avenue).

In terms of size, it’s a relatively small section of New York City.

What it lacks in size it makes up for in pure density of restaurants and cafes that churn out some of the best food New York City has to offer.

That’s Why You Need To:

Stick around, get hungry and learn about some of the foodie travel destinations in SOHO, NYC.

All Roads Lead to the New York City Subway

The New York City subway is not as hard to navigate as it may seem.

But Before You Enter the NYC Subway:

Just check to see if you are going Uptown or Downtown BEFORE you enter the station. Then, make sure that the station you are entering goes in that direction since not all stations have trains that go in BOTH directions.

Phew, glad we got the boringness out of the way so we can start salivating.

You’re in luck though since SOHO is really easy to get to.

Just take either one of the green 6 or 4 (the 4 is a little faster) lines to Spring Street.

The NYC subway is the easiest and most efficient way to get around.

Yup, That’s it.

And since SOHO is in Lower Manhattan, you’ll probably want to take the subway downtown, unless you’ re coming from Brooklyn.

Why Spring Street?

Legit, just walk down the block and it’s like foodie goodness just exploded all over the place, but in the best possible way since this will hopefully be your favorite edition of free food tours NYC.

If you’re booking a trip right now then I IMPLORE you to get travel insurance – even if it’s not from me.

After all, this past year has been a wild ride and I don’t want you to lose money because government regulations have changed.

Truth be told though, I’ve never traveled without travel insurance and don’t think you should either – especially since I think we’ve all had plans drastically change because of the pandemic.

Therefore, find an insurance agency that covers travel changes related to COVID-19, like my two all-time faves World Nomads and  Safety Wing . You can also read more about which policy is right for you in  my full review here .

First Stop? Dominique Ansel Bakery

Okay, I know.

This place isn’t exactly the most original destination for food in New York City. But, this place is super famous for a reason. So yes, the food is damn good.

But why stop here first?

Cronuts my friend. It’s all about the cronuts. These croissant and doughnut hybrids are so popular that if you come here after 9 am on a Saturday, they may just be sold out.

So make sure to stop here first!

Now in case, you aren’t in the know, Dominique Ansel Bakery releases one cronut flavor every month, and they never repeat a flavor.

Be prepared for Blueberry Coconut with Lemon Zest in July and Fig Mascarpone in August.

Be sure to stop by Dominique Ansel Bakery and try out the cronut flavor of the month.

That Being Said:

I wasn’t a huge fan of the banana weirdness but hopefully, Blueberry Coconut with zest is better than the one I had.

Just Remember That:

If you’re not into the Cronut craze, there is still some pretty awesome stuff to eat here. You can try a blooming hot chocolate (a marshmallow flower actually blooms atop the hot chocolate. Talk about some Harry Potter level sorcery), the chocolate chip cookie shots with vanilla infused milk (Only available in store after 3 pm. Otherwise you can purchase a to-go gift set), the frozen s’more etc.

And Guess What?

There are two lines. So if you aren’t getting a cronut, you don’t have to wait in an epically long line.

Cronuts are still the shiz in New York. I waited over a half hour at 9 am.

Just Be Prepared to Order and Pay Quickly.

Remember, New Yorkers are always in a rush and you don’t want to be THAT guy fumbling around at the counter.

And skip the coffee, you’ll find better later in the tour.

***Located at 189 Spring Street (between Sullivan and Thompson). Open Monday through Thursday from 8 am to 7 pm and Friday/Saturday from 8 am to 8 pm. Open Sundays from 9 am to 7 pm.

Make sure to try the cookie and milk shot at Dominique Ansel Bakery.

Take a Break, Savor the Flavor and Gear Up for Our Next Stop… Ladurée in SOHO!

And yes, if you’ve been to Paris then this is the same one!

First of all:

Before you even set foot in this stunning and utterly delectable bakery/restaurant/cafe, please note that they have Macarons, not Macaroons.

There is a HUGE difference (maybe the most important thing you’ll learn on any walking food tours of New York City. LoL).

Macarons are:

A traditional French, meringue-based cookie that is made with egg whites, icing sugar, granulated sugar, almond powder, and food coloring.

AKA it’s light and fluffy and delicious.

And comes in a variety of crazy flavors like bubble gum, rose petal, and not so crazy flavors like caramel, pistachio, chocolate, etc.

Macaroons are:

A small cookie, that is traditionally made from ground almonds, and sugar. Delicious but more dense, buttery, and coconutty than the French variety.

Don’t expect to find these coconut nuggets of delight here.

You’ll find an assortment of macaron flavors that are presented in exquisite gift boxes that you’ll never want to throw out.

The macarons at Laduree are a must for any foodie in NYC

And if you think the gift boxes are gorgeous, just step inside the restaurant

The decor here transports you back in time, into the world of grandeur, style, and grace that is reminiscent of the salons and cafes that dominated the Parisian landscape throughout the early 1900s.

In modern terms:

The decor here is an Instagrammers paradise; charming chandeliers, chic wallpaper, and statues that will have that selfie stick fo yours going wild.

So whether you sit down for table service or grab some macarons to go, this cafe is a foodie hotspot for anyone in SOHO.

Locations like this are why this area has some of the best New York City food tours.

*** Laduree SOHO is located at 398 W Broadway and is open 9 am to 10 pm from Sunday through Wednesday and open until 11 pm Thursday through Saturday.

Need a Food Break?

So If you’re feeling full then now is a good time to take a breather.

Just stop by Ground Support Cafe .

This trendy cafe has a hipster feel and benches outside that make this quaint, independent coffee shop a stellar place to grab a cappuccino on a nice sunny day.

They also serve food.

But since we were just at Laduree across the street, I’m pretty sure you’re probably not hungry.

Their drinks are pretty fancy so this is a REAL coffee shop. I mean they have a Cortado and Chemex. Need I say more?

Yeah, no clue what those drinks are.

But I’m sure someone out is more proficient than I in the mystical tongue of coffee and knows all about those hardcore espresso drinks that only the best coffee shop in New York City serve.

***Located at 399 West Broadway and open on weekdays from 7 am to 8 pm and on Weekends from 8 am to 8 pm.

Two roads diverged in a wood and I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.

Yeah, i’m not robert frost and this nyc food tour ain’t that serious. but from here, you can either go to magnum and make your own ice cream bar (because that’s all the rage), or you can head over to the moma design store and then double back..

The Choice is Yours:

So choose wisely. Indiana Jones Anyone?

Can you tell I’m slightly over the Magnum NYC make your own ice cream bar thing?

If You’re Not Familiar:

It’s the latest in a long line of NYC pop up shop that has all the Instagram kids going goo goo gaga because it is currently one of the most Instagrammable places in New York City .

But What is it really?

Well, to make your own ice cream bar, you first need to decide between white, dark, or milk chocolate as your dip.

These are the REALLY tough decisions in life.

You get to choose from over twenty, super fancy toppings, like Himalayan Sea Salt, Rose Petals, Urfa Biber chile flakes, dried cherries, salted caramel coated cookies, etc.

Think like the Project Runway of ice cream shops.

Stop by Magnum summer pop up to create your own magnum bar.

But the Super Cool Part?

They have these “Lookbook Bars,” that are released in pairs, between June 1 and Labor Day, and that look like edible art that is ALMOST too pretty to eat, especially since they are one of the most Instagrammable desserts in New York City .

Magnum really stepped it up by using colored chocolate because now your ice cream bar can look like a tye dye shirt!

Hippie, I mean Hipster, dreams really do come true.

Yup, there are now ice cream bars that are ALMOST as cool as me.

Kidding! I’m the anti-cool kid (So take pity on me and tell me that this is quickly becoming the best food tour NYC).

***Located at 132 Spring Street and open 11 am to 8 pm every day, except Sunday when they are only open until 7 pm.

Onwards and Upwards (as we gently caress our food babies) to the MOMA design store.

I am not a huge fan of shopping in NYC but the MOMA design store is like a super cool design museum where you don’t pay for admission and where you can buy all the art, and at mildly affordable prices too!

All the designs here are modernist (hence the acronym Moma aka Museum of Modern Art) in style and interesting to both look at and consider. Not like I actually know what they mean but I still try!

(I mean for a mere $200, you can purchase a vibrant replica of Andi Warhol’s skateboards with the iconic Campbell’s soup cans on them. Or you can just oh and ah like me)

The MOMA design store is such a great place to visit and explore.

If you wanna visit the real deal museum, and I suggest you do, head on over to West 53rd street.

So Stop Here:

Take a break from stuffing yourself silly, on this DIY food tour NYC, and making your pants way too tight. Get in the game because you need to make room for our next stop!

***This super rad store is located at 81 Spring Street and is open from 10 am to 8 pm every day except Sunday when the store is open from 11 am to 7 pm.

Balthazar, Here We Come!

Now is the time to assess your hunger level on this food crawl NYC.

If you are at a one, then I suggest stopping by Balthazar Bakery and grabbing a to-go bag. They have a bakery with fab croissants, danishes, and muffins that will all make a killer breakfast tomorrow AM.

Not a sugar addict?

They also bake savory croissants as well as spinach and cheese danishes for anyone looking for something that won’t make their dentist cringe in disgust.

By my favorite part?

They sell mini pastries! This way, you can try an assortment of carb bombs without feeling like a total fatass.

This Bakery is cozy (aka tiny) so there are no tables.

Balthazar Bakery has some of the best baked goods in all of NYC.

If you’re looking to devour these delectable pastries ASAP then stroll on over to the super cool, Elizabeth street neighborhood garden and grab a seat there.

One of the quirkiest and most eclectic gardens that I have ever been to (located between the Basilica of Saint Patrick and the New Museum).

Feel like a more formal dining experience?

Right next door is Balthazar Restaurant , an iconic French brasserie that serves everything from brunch to pastries to fresh seafood daily. It’s pretty delicious but popular, so be sure to make a reservation in advance.

And no, this is not the place get cheap eats in New York City  but a great place for any foodie travelers out there.

High prices, one of the most iconic food trends NYC that never seem to go away.

At This Moment, We Will Take a Brief Break from the Foodie Frenzy and Stroll Over to Harney and Sons SOHO

Oh wait, you’re not a fan of tea?

Yeah, neither am I really. But I am a HUGE fan of Harney and Sons.

Not only do they provide you with hundreds of flavors of high-quality tea to choose from, that come in both the iced and hot variety, but the store is staffed with friendly and helpful sales associates who want nothing more than to make you happy.

I know, so weird in New York City.

Plus, the walls are literally lined, from floor to ceiling, with the finest quality teas that you can actually taste while standing at the counter.

So grab a shopping basket and stock up on literally every tea imaginable. And the price point isn’t bad either. You won’t end up paying $30 for a tiny tin of tea. You’ll pay maybe like $8.00 a tin.

Harney and Sons Tea

No Harney and Sons near you?

That’s cool. Not only can you order their tea on Amazon, but many local grocery stores also carry some of their most popular flavors.

***Located at 433 Broome Street, the hot cinnamon spice tea is my fave so clearly, you should buy that. And the store is open every day from 11:30 am to 6:30 pm, except Wednesday.

We’re Hitting Another Fork (Get the Pun?) in the Road Guys! So depending on how hungry you are, you can head over to the Basilica of Saint Patrick’s or NOMO Kitchen because both are awesome.

I’ m not having some born-again religious experience.

This stop doesn’t have too much to do with the church. This is just the location of a fabulous local street market.

Just outside the Basilica, local vendors are lined up along the sidewalk and sell everything from jewelry to clothing to wall art.

And not stuff you will find at Walmart either.

Many of these vendors sell items with a unique local charm since many of their wares are actually handcrafted, like the rings that one vendor creates out of spoons and forks.

How Cool Right?

Makes me almost, sort of like shopping, just a little bit.

But if Shopping in New York City Sounds About as Much Fun as a Tooth Extraction then Nomo Kitchen in SOHO it is.

Not only does this hotel restaurant have a menu of delectable brunch items that make me swoon, but the decor here is absolutely stunning and an Instagrammers paradise.

The entrance to Nomo Kitchen is covered by a topiary of neatly trimmed leaves that create a beautiful, botanical tunnel that serves as the entrance to the building.

People use this spot for impromptu photo shoots. I literally had to not so politely ask one woman to move because she has been there for a solid half an hour and I was sick of waiting.

But I digress.

There are also quaint wooden seats, tables, statues, and trees that create a fantastic patio, in front of the restaurant, where you can sit, relax, and take photos after your meal.

Once inside though:

You will be absolutely astounded.

Between the modern glass roof, that floods the restaurant with copious amounts of light, the exquisite crystal chandeliers that magically dance the light through the air, and the walls that are adorned with vibrantly colored, street art style hearts, you definitely won’t leave without taking a few (hundred) photos.

Noms Kitchen is an amazing brunch spot in SOHO.

All this and we haven’t even discussed the FAB brunch menu or the helpful staff.

One word, okay actually three but Lemon Ricotta Pancakes. So good. Served with a dusting of powdered sugar, some fresh mixed berries, and a sprinkling of candied pistachios and you’ll have a hard time not asking for seconds.

The Avocado Toast with a poached egg is also really good too.

But’s let be real:

Pancakes are a bit more fun than avocado toast.

Does this sound a bit out of your price range though?

Well, you’re in luck. All the entrees served here, besides the steak and eggs, are under $20. So even if your budget is tight (kind of like your pants are after eating here), you can still enjoy some of the finer things in life, like pancakes. Lots and lots of pancakes.

Oh and dress up a smidge.

This place feels a little fancy smancy. But not intimidatingly so. Like no ball gown needed for one of my favorite fun NYC brunch spots .

***At Nomo SOHO at 9 Crosby Street. Open every day from 7 am to 11 pm.

Shut the Front Door! Did Someone Say Ice Cream? Why Yes! Morgenstern’s Finest Ice Cream to be Exact.

So right when you set eyes on this FINE purveyor of some of the best ice cream in New York City:

You know it’s gonna be good. I mean the whole shop screams vintage, 1950s malt shop.

You feel like all you need is a poodle skirt or bomber jacket and you’ll ready to hit the sock hop, or if you’re feeling saucy, maybe you’ll get pinned and hold hands at lovers lane.

Sorry, I know that was a little X-rated.

But I LOVE the feel here. The employees even wear those little white hats that all the food service people wore in the 50s.

However, it’s not all about the decor at Morgenstern’s Finest Ice Cream !

The ice cream here is absolutely off the chain.

Is that what cool kids say nowadays?

I’ve never been cool so I wouldn’t know.

The shop also has these really interesting flavors like burnt honey vanilla, salt and pepper pine nut, burnt sage, and a few more traditional flavors like Rockiest Road.

My personal; fave?

Raspberry Cheesecake.

And the kicker?

I’m not a huge fan of raspberry cheesecake. But somehow, I loved this flavor since it felt like pure magic in my mouth. And I never wanted the magic to end.

Morgenstern's is some of the best ice cream that New York City has to offer.

So stop by and pick up a thin slice of heaven for me.

Just make sure you get two though because no one will want to share something Walt Disney level magical.

***Located at 2 Rivington Street and open Sunday through Thursday from 8 am to 11 pm and open Saturday and Sunday until Midnight.

Once You’re Hoovered Your Ice Cream, it’s on to the New Museum

No, not a new museum.

The New Museum .

That’s the name of this museum, in case you’re mildly confused. I feel like they could have come up with a better name but it’s all good.

So why visit The New Museum?

Well, this contemporary art mecca is entirely dedicated to showcasing the latest contemporary art exhibits from around the world.

Expect a lot of highly innovative, multi-media art displays with intriguing commentaries on the impact of technology on our daily lives.

Currently on display?

The work of an artist that I didn’t even know I loved.

Thomas Bayrle, of Germany, creates pieces that analyze the unique relationship that has developed between technology, propaganda, and desire.

(Seriously an amazing exhibit where he uses one small, repetitive symbol to create larger mosaics that are displayed throughout the museum).

And FYI, this is a smaller museum! Woo Who! No museum burnout here!

The New Museum is a great museum to visit if you're in SOHO.

Makes it much more manageable since you can see everything in about two hours.

The only annoying thing ?

This museum is really narrow and tall, so there is only one elevator that takes everyone to the seven floors of the museum.

Yeah, it gets a bit slow and annoying to wait.

That’s why I suggest using the stairwell. Just make sure it’s not the emergency exit cause I could so see myself setting off the fire alarm by accident.

Added Bonus:

If you visit on the weekends, the Sky Room is open and you can get a nice view of the city from the seventh floor. I mean, it’s not the most amazing view I’ve ever seen but it’s a lovely place to sit, relax, and watch the city go by.

***Located at 235 Bowery, the museum has pay what you wish hours on Thursday nights between 7 pm and 9 pm. Otherwise, the museum costs $18 for adults, $15 for seniors, and $12 for students.

The museum is also open from 11 am to 6 pm Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday through Sunday. The museum is also open on Thursday with extended hours from 11 am to 9 pm.

I Know This Has Been a Long Day (I’m Tired Just writing About it), But Freeman’s is Our Last Stop if You’re Up for It!

Look, I get it.

You’re probably stuffed, exhausted, and broke, but even if you don’t eat at Freeman’s, this restaurant is still worth a visit.

This stellar eatery is tucked away at the end of, you guessed it, Freeman’s Alley; a fun little alley that is decorated with all sorts of fantastic street art that is totally worth a look.

Freeman's is a quaint restaurant that is great for brunch.

The art along the alley is the only indicator that you are actually in New York City.

The eatery itself has a quaint, light turquoise exterior with an outer facade that screams country charm.

And if it’s possible:

The interior is even more charming with its rustic paintings and antler wall hangings that make you feel like you’re in a country cabin and not in the middle of New York City .

So even if you don’t stop in and try the Quinoa Bowl (it’s really good. I practically licked the plate), do try and explore this alley and all the hidden gems of New York that can be found within it.

That’s All Folks!

And I bet you’re happy about that.

Because this DIY New York City food tour is insanely long.

Totally worth it and totally delicious, in my humble opinion.

You don’t really have to walk too much since most of these New York City attractions are within ten blocks of one another.

So get your foodie groove on.

And feel free to sport a food baby for me. No judgment here!

When planning New York City travel, a local food tour should be on the top of your bucket list. Not only are food tours a great way to see the city, but they expose you to some of the best restaurants and New York City food, in iconic neighborhoods like SOHO. So check out this local's guide to all the New York City things to do in SOHO; like Dominique Ansel Bakery, MOMA design store, Magnum Ice Cream Shop, etc. #foodie #NYC #NewYorkCity #travel #wanderlust #USA

Great DIY food tour! Approximately how much time can this take if you reachable stops?

Thursday 7th of November 2019

It honestly depends on how long you stop and lines but the tour itself isn't long in terms of distance.

The Best Walking Tours of New York City

People crossing a busy street in bustling NYC, USA with cars all around

New York City has tons of walking tour companies. There are free tours, food tours, neighborhood tours, expensive private walking tours. New York has a walking tour for everyone’s needs and interests!

Personally, I love walking tours. I think they’re a wonderful way to see a city, get your bearings, and learn about where you are from a local expert. After all, why visit a place if you don’t want to learn about it?

To help you decide what tours to take while you’re exploring the Big Apple, I decided to sample a big chunk of the city’s historical walking tour companies in order to find the best ones. While it took a toll on my feet (I definitely got my steps in!), I learned a lot about NYC history!

Here’s a review of the best walking tours in New York City:

Best Overall Tour

The Take Walks walking tour company logo

Take Walks specializes in behind the scenes access that other tours don’t offer. Their Met tour is hours of educational fun and their Statue of Liberty and Ellis Islandtour as well as their Disney tour take you behind the scenes and give you insider access you won’t get anywhere else.

They are my FAVORITE tour company in the city. Any of their tours will be great!

Best Free Tour

Free Tours By Foot logo

Free Tours by Foot

These free tours are offered throughout the city by licensed guides. The company really shines in its diverse catalog — there’s a tour for everyone. They add a bit of quirky history to each tour and, since there’s no set script, each tour differs based on your guide. (My SoHo tour guide waxed poetic on gentrification.) Just make sure to sign up in advance and be sure to tip your guide at the end!

In addition to these two awesome tour companies, New York has over a dozen other insightful, educational, and delicious tours in the city. Here are my top suggestions:

1. Big Apple Greeter

Big Apple Greeter was founded in 1992 and connects visitors with local residents who show them around their neighborhood for a day. These aren’t professional guides, just locals showing you their favorite spots. I haven’t taken a tour with this company in many years, but the concept is still spot on and it’s something I highly recommend first-time visitors do.

After a pause due to COVID, Big Apple Greeter is back, but at the moment they ask you to fill out a visit request 4 weeks in advance. Currently, they are not accepting restorations within 10 days so make sure to book in advance! Meeting a greeter is free of charge and there is a no-tipping policy. However, please consider making a donation to help this service continue.

2. Explore the Real Brooklyn

Friend and fellow travel writer Dani Heinrich runs this off-the-beaten-path tour around Brooklyn. She’s a diehard Brooklynite and loves taking people around the city to show them there’s a lot more to NYC than just Manhattan. She has been leading these tours for over 4 years and will take you all over Brooklyn (so be prepared to walk). Tours last 4.5 hours.

Tours from $44 USD.

3. Central Park Conservancy Tour

Ever wanted to know about the flora and fauna of Central Park? Well, now you can. Several free tours highlight the various features of the park. Not only do you get to walk around the park on a beautiful day, but you learn about what you’re looking at too! There are tours that cover the main sights, family-friendly tours, tours that focus on statues and monuments, and more. The tours usually last 90 minutes. You can purchase tickets online in advance.

Tours from $25 USD.

4. The Village Alliance

The Village Alliance offers free self-guided walking tours of Greenwich Village. You can get the itineraries and maps on their website so you can learn about the history and social culture of the area. Tours cover everything from LGBTQ landmarks to the 1960s to important women in history. Their website also has tons of information on the bohemian art scene, food, and gentrification. Since tours are self-guided, they last as long as you want them to.

5. Big Onion Walking Tours

This is one of the biggest walking tour companies in New York. Using Ph.D. candidates as tour guides, this company runs about 50 tours on varying days each month. I took their Prohibition walking tour. I liked my guide, and she provided a lot of historical information, but much of it wasn’t directly related to Prohibition. While that was a personal bummer ( I’m a sucker for anything Jazz Age! ), I still really liked the tour and would recommend the company.

Tours from $30 USD ($20 for students and seniors).

6. Bowery Boys Walks

The Bowery Boys started off as a podcast back in 2007, focusing on the unique history of the Big Apple. Since then, they’ve branched out and created their own walking tours based on some of their most popular episodes and topics. They offer over a dozen distinct tours that cover specific areas around the city as well as different historical periods, such as their Gilded Age Mansions tour (which is super interesting!). Their tours last around two hours. Be sure to book in advance since there is limited space.

Tours from $40 USD.

7. Honorable Mention: Get Your Guide

Get Your Guide is a massive online platform for finding all kinds of fun activities, including walking tours, bike tours, and food tours. Whenever I’m in a new city, I check their app to see what new activities I can find. There is really something for every interest and budget, and booking is a breeze. I can’t recommend them enough!

Some suggested tours worth checking out are:

  • Chinatown & Little Italy Food Tour
  • MoMA Before Hours Guided Tour
  • Speakeasy & Prohibition History Tour

A fresh slice of pizza from a pizza place in busy New York City, USA

Devour Tours is my go-to food tour company as they always have amazing itineraries and use expert local guides. In NYC, they currently have two epic tours on offer. Their Ultimate Greenwich Village tour lasts three hours and includes a filling 9 stops at a handful of family-run eateries around this iconic bohemian neighborhood.

Their Dumplings, Delis, & History tour explores the Lower East Side, including a visit to the oldest and most famous deli in the city!

Other suggested food tour companies to check out are:

  • Scott’s Pizza Tours
  • Foods of NY
  • Famous Fat Dave’s Five Borough Eating Tour
  • Beyond the Plate

No matter what company you tour with on this list, you’ll learn a lot, have fun, and discover parts of NYC with these walking tours you wouldn’t have found otherwise. Nothing can replace an insider’s tour of a city! Try a couple over the course of your visit. (Again, my favorite is Take Walks but any company on this list will be phenomenal!)

Due to the nature of creating a well balanced and thoughtful gastronomy experience, many of our tours are unable to accommodate certain dietary restrictions. Please contact us prior to booking your tour to see if we are able to accommodate your dietary needs.

We chose the Greenwich Village district for our New York City food tour because of the district's diverse restaurant scene, deep-rooted history, architecture, and its timeless charisma. While the rest of the city was subject to the 1811 grid system, the Village was able to escape this fate because of its charming, meandering streets.

The powers that be could not be bothered to try to reroute the winding streets found here. But their loss was our gain! This was a big win, both for those residents and for us because we get to take a step back into time and stroll outside of city life without actually leaving the city!

What You’ll Do and Eat

Our Hell’s Kitchen Food Tour takes you to the best restaurants in midtown, some say the best food in New York . Manhattan Walking Tour will treat you to the culinary experience of a lifetime on this food tour, from Japanese BBQ to Indian Tacos – and don’t forget the Meatballs!

And there is so much more. Hell’s Kitchen is a diverse neighborhood just west of the Theater District where a world of ethnic food choices are available , and that makes this truly a New York City food tour. New York locals and visitors alike visit Hell’s Kitchen for its amazing restaurants , and Manhattan Walking Tour will also give you the inside scoop on how this thriving neighborhood came to be. There are at least three stories of how Hell’s Kitchen got its name . We know them all, and on our food tour, we make the history come alive for you .

Taking our food tour of Hell’s Kitchen is like taking a food tour of all of New York City . New Yorkers love food from all over the world and this food tour will give you a taste of living (and eating) like a New Yorker. And you’ll discover great restaurants to try when you have Broadway tickets, too.

So join us on our Hell’s Kitchen food tour, and you’ll find out this “kitchen” is a little bit of heaven.

Hell’s Kitchen does not just have great food and history, but also has an amazing “Nightlife”. Try our “add-on” and find out why this is one of NYC ’s hot spots. You can enjoy a pint of world-class craft beer at one of our favorite pubs in the area. If beer is not on the top of your list then sip some fine wine at the end of your NYC food tour in a cozy atmosphere.

Because Hell’s Kitchen is in the heart of New York City, taking this tour at 12:30 gives you ample opportunity to explore nearby landmarks including Columbus Circle, Times Square, the Empire State Building, Central Park, 5th Ave, Rockefeller Center and Radio City Music Hall. There are great things to see and do on your way to the tour, and even more after. Of course there is a lot to eat on our Manhattan food tour of Hell’s Kitchen, so a stroll through another neighborhood is just what you need to work up an appetite and/or walk it all off.

In addition to this tour, we offer guided tours of 2 nearby areas that pair well with Hell’s Kitchen at a substantial discoun t. It is seamless and your guide travels with you from one tour to the other. We have two Double Combos that last about 3.5 hours. Choose to add in a historic tour of Times Square (opens in a new tab) or Central Park (opens in a new tab) either before or after your food tour. Want to do them all? Our Triple Combo tour includes all three – Times Square, Hell’s Kitchen and Central Park (opens in a new tab) .

Additional Things We Recommend for You to See and Do

For those of you who want to discover New York City landmarks on your own, here is a list that works well with your Hell’s Kitchen food tour:

  • Begin your morning at Rockefeller Center for a taping of The Today Show on The Plaza.
  • Or ascend to the Top of the Rock for spectacular NYC views including the Chrysler and Empire State Buildings. It’s just a short walk from here to your Hell’s Kitchen food tour.
  • Take a bicycle, pedicab or carriage ride, or even rent a rowboat, in Central Park. Any way you experience the legendary, 843-acre NYC enclave, with or without us, is sure to be magical.
  • Score Broadway show tickets from the half-price ticket booth in Times Square. Snap selfies in front of the Times Building, where the New Years Eve ball drops, and with the many famous billboards and street performers.
  • Just 3 blocks from the start of our Hell’s Kitchen NYC food tour is the renowned 5th Avenue. Take a sidewalk stroll and window shop at iconic, luxury retailers such as Saks, Bergdorf Goodman, Louis Vuitton, Prada and, of course, Tiffany & Co.
  • Head over to the waterfront after your guided tour to explore a World War II aircraft carrier and the Enterprise space shuttle (among many other cool exhibits) at The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum.
  • Start your day with a Visit the stunning, historic St. Patrick’s Cathedral, where self-guided audio tours are available and services are held daily.

Happy customer.

Our personal tour guide, Nancy was fabulous! We were treated to yummy mini meals at 4 stops in “Hell’s Kitchen.” The food was excellent, the pace was perfect and it was fun to learn about the history of the area. Highly recommended!

Manhattan Walking Tour is perhaps the best way to get to know Hell’s Kitchen in an afternoon.

So you want to plan a self-guided walking food tour through Manhattan? You have come to the right place, my friend! New York City is known around the world for its excellent culinary scene. From $1 pizza slices to tacos, bagels, and desserts we`ve got you covered as you eat your way through Manhattan (and see some awesome sights along the way!) I will warn you that this tour isn`t for the faint of heart; there`s a lot of walking and A LOT of food involved. Bring an empty stomach and your best pair of walking shoes for the ultimate NYC food tour.

Things to consider.

  • It`s a Marathon, Not a Sprint:   The best way to do this is to order 1 dish at each place and  share  it with your group.
  • Give Yourself Lots of Time:   You will absolutely need a full day for this jam-packed food, walking, and sights tour! There are some awesome attractions built into this route so make sure you plan enough time to enjoy everything.

1. Murray’s Bagel

You cant visit New York City without eating a NY Bagel and Murray`s is the best place to do it! Kick off your day at 10 am with a breakfast sandwich on a freshly made bagel. I know it may be tempting to get your own.. but trust me and share 1 or 2 between your group.

The 11 Best Restaurants in NYC

Our Recommendations:  Bacon and Egg Breakfast Sandwich and Avocado Toast.

From here, walk south and meander through Washington Square Park. Admire the Arch and the lovely fountain while simultaneously making room for your next stop.

Murray`s Bagel –> Pommes Frites: 15-20 minutes walk (0.7 miles)

2. Pommes Frites

Pommes Frites is a hole in the wall fry shack with a ton of character! They open at 11 am which should be perfect timing for you to get the first batch of delicious french fries. Make sure to branch out with the fun dipping sauces.

NYC Walking Food Tour

Our Recommendations:   Fries with Mango Chutney, Rosemary Garlic Aoli, and Dill Lemon dipping sauces.

By now you’re probably not that hungry anymore; so head south for some shopping (or window shopping) in SoHo. The shops start about 5 minutes walk (0.3 miles) south of Pommes Frites and you can easily walk around for an hour or two. When you`re ready; head back north for lunch at 2 Bros.

Pommes Frites –> 2 Bros Pizza: 2-minute walk (0.1 miles) directly or 0.5-1.5 miles if you walk around SoHo and come back

3.  2 Bros Pizza

2 Bros is home to the best $1 pizza in the city! The slices are massive and you`ve gotta have pizza on your NYC food tour right?!

walking food tour new york city

Our Recommendations:   Cheese and Hawaiian

On the way to your next stop (which you should be VERY excited about by the way) make sure to stop at the iconic FRIENDS apartment building. Enjoy the cute little shops in this neighborhood as you make your way to Magnolia Bakery.

Related Post: 15 Cant Miss Things to do in NYC.

2 Bros Pizza –> Magnolia Bakery: 13 minute walk (0.7 miles)

4. Magnolia Bakery

Magnolia Bakery is my all time favorite bakery in NYC. It doesn’t look like much from the outside but the desserts are to die for! Although there is no sitting room inside the shop you can devour your treat (you can try not to.. but you  will  devour it) in the cute park across the street. Make sure to order the banana pudding.. seriously.. you have got to try it!

The 11 Best Restaurants in NYC

Our Recommendations:  Banana Pudding, German Chocolate Cupcake, Vanilla Cupcake with Buttercream Frosting

Feeling full yet? Walk north 10 minutes (0.5 miles) to check out  Chelsea Market.  You probably know that there are plenty of places to eat inside, but we could spend a whole other day on that can of worms. Besides the food, you can also find cool shops, vendors, and a great vibe so spend some time exploring!

From Chelsea Market, you can go right outside and hop onto the High Line! The High Line is a section of an old railway track above the city that has been converted into a walking path and a garden. Walk north for about 20 minutes (0.8 miles) enjoying the greenery and the views of the city.

Still feeling full? No problem! We`ve got 20 more minutes of walking (1 mile) to get to Tacombi.

Magnolia Bakery –> Chelsea Market –> The High Line –> Tacombi: 50 minutes walk (2.3 miles)

Tacombi is a creative Mexican restaurant and one of my faves on this NYC food tour. They serve single tacos for $4-6 USD each allowing you to try as many flavors as you like between your group.

The 11 Best Restaurants in NYC

Our Recommendations:  Chips and Guacamole, Baja Crispy Fish Taco, Black Bean & Sweet Potato Taco, Angus Beef Barbacoa Taco, and the Avocado Tostada.

After pigging out on tacos (I know we said we wouldn`t but they were just so damn good..) why not head up to the top of the  Empire State Building ? You`re right there, the views of the city are stunning and it will give you time to prepare your stomach for whats to come.

Tacombi –> Shake Shack: 10 minute walk (0.5 miles)

6. Shake Shack

It wouldn’t be a NYC food tour without a stop at the original Shake Shack in Madison Square Park. Try a legendary burger, fries and a milkshake if you`re stomach is up for the challenge.

The 11 Best Restaurants in NYC

Our Recommendations:  Shack Burger, Chick`n Shack, Chocolate Shake, and Frozen Custard.

Are you stuffed yet? I`d be a little concerned if you weren`t! For the record; now is a perfectly reasonable time to end your food tour. Take a walk across the street to The Flatiron Building which is famous for movies like Spiderman and Godzilla. If you feel like you could pack one more bite of NY flavor in; I’ve got a bonus round for you. Walk 10 minutes west and have your final dessert of the day at the Doughnut Plant.

Shake Shack –> The Doughnut Plant: 10 minutes (0.5 miles)

7. The Doughnut Plant

An adorable little doughnut shop and the perfect place to end your NYC food tour. They are home to the worlds first creme brulee and offer all sorts of inventive doughnut flavors bound to make you uncomfortably full (but very satisfied).

Excellent choices. I have done the research myself and you layed out the perfect tour. You hit all the perfect foods everyone should experience except maybe a pastrami sandwich but that’s another neighborhood for another trip. Congratulation.

Do you addresses for these restaurants? I’m mapping them out for our itinerary to make sure they’re still open, but having a hard time when there are multiple locations in NYC. Thanks!

How five entrepreneurs launched their own walking tour companies

Buildings in Manhattan, New York

If you’ve a penchant for history, culture or food, or have any sort of local offbeat intel, you may very well have fantasized about opening up a little walking tour operation, whether as a full-time business or as a side gig.

Ahead, these city-trotters share how they made pounding the pavement work.

Gabriel Schoenberg, Graff Tours

Gabriel Schoenberg, Graff Tours

Schoenberg’s uncle was a tour guide for many years, and the entrepreneur worked for him in college to make extra money. “I saw a graffiti art tour in Buenos Aires and thought it was amazing so I adapted it to NYC,” he said of the origins of his Bushwick business in 2013.

Now, the Greenpoint resident nets “a few thousand” a month through Graff Tours, his sole gig. In addition to tours, his company offers graffiti art classes and does live painting events. “Being a good tour guide is about your passion for the topic, so only guide in a field you love,” said Schoenberg, who recommends reading up on your area of interest to become even more of a subject-matter expert.

Seth Kamil, Big Onion Walking Tours

walking food tour new york city

Founded in 1991, Kamil, based in South Slope, has been at the helm of this NYC business for 33 years. The company was born out of “accident and economic necessity,” when two Columbia University American history Ph.D. students — Kamil and his co-founder Ed O’Donnell — needed to make money. The pair committed to only hire graduate students and recent, underemployed Ph.D.s, which “is still the core of our business model,” said Kamil.

O’Donnell left the company, but Kamil runs Big Onion full time to this day.

To succeed in this industry, Kamil stressed being original.

“Read books, articles — but don’t take the tours that other guides are leading to try and build your knowledge base,” he said.

Alana Hoye Barnaba, Ahoy New York Food Tours

Alana Hoye Barnaba

Originally from Gloversville, NY, Hoye Barnaba moved to NYC, where she was often visited by loved ones on the weekend, so she’d spend time showing them around.

“I realized that I had a knack for sharing my city and started to volunteer for Big Apple Greeter ,” she said of the free organization that connects visitors with residents willing to share their knowledge of the city. Ultimately, she decided to pursue her sightseeing license to become an official tour guide and spent time developing what is today the operator’s signature tour — a food walking tour of Chinatown and Little Italy. In 2010, Hoye Barnaba made it her full-time job.

Along with finding your niche, Hoye Barnaba said organization is key. “Secondly, if you intend to hire, have proper training materials and teach consistency to your staff so that your product is the same quality no matter who is giving the tour,” she said.

Hoye Barnaba hopes to become a $1 million tour company in 2024. “We were just shy of it last year,” she said.

Todd Lefkovic, Foods of NY Tours

Todd Lefkovic

Based in Greenwich Village, Lefkovic (on the right) originally hails from Cranford, NJ. As a young boy, he became fascinated with NYC, watching the local news and reading the newspaper. Then in the summer of 1977, aged 15, he began making forays into the city to explore.

Lefkovic still fondly recollects exploring 42nd Street for the first time. “There were a lot of peep show shops, XXX theaters, prostitutes, pimps, drug dealers and derelicts on the street. Coming from Cranford — a quiet and clean suburban town — this was the best thing ever to experience!”

Never miss a story.

Lefkovic continued to bring friends, family and girlfriends into the city to explore. All of it was done by hoofing it, never taking a taxi or riding the subway. “The only real way to explore is on foot,” Lefkovic avowed.

His official business started in 1998 and became his full-time gig a year later. They currently run food tours five days a week. While the pandemic dented his business — in 2019 gross revenue was $3 million; it’s now $1.1 million — that’s still no paltry sum.

To build up your business, venture to parts lesser known, the touring guru advised. “Create your own food tour in an area that is not overrun by other food tours,” said Lefkovic.

Stephen Oddo, Walks Tours

Stephen Oddo

While Oddo is based in Boston, his company operates tours in NYC along with 24 other cities in North America and Europe.

The idea for his company began in 2008, when Oddo was living in Rome and working as a tour guide at the Vatican and Colosseum.

“I wanted to show people new ways to experience these familiar monuments, with an emphasis on quality guides, smaller groups and unique itineraries,” he said.

In 2014, Walks expanded to NYC with small group walking tours of the Statue of Liberty, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and 9/11 memorial tours. In 2022, Walks became the official tour operator of Grand Central Terminal.

Last year, Oddo also served as a mentor for the Alliance for Downtown New York’s Walking Tour Incubator Grant Program, which gives money to entrepreneurs starting walking tours in lower Manhattan.

While most of the Walks guides work part time, Oddo also hires many of them to write for its travel blogs and create social media content. “Their local knowledge is incredibly valuable,” said Oddo, sharing that tour guides around the world tend to make between $40 to $80 per hour.

Oddo’s top tips for aspiring amblers? Make sure to collect and publish good customer reviews to build trust with future clients.

“Producing quality social media videos on platforms like Instagram and TikTok can be highly valuable,” he said. And, “especially in New York, you’ll need to find creative ways to reach potential clients that already have a lot of choices when it comes to experiences.”

Eco-tourism and eco-travel in New York City? Yes, the world's busiest cosmopolitan does a lot to make it an environmentally friendly destination. The best example of this is its highly useful and used mass transit system of subway and bus services. Citizens and visitors are highly encouraged to use this super efficient and cheap mode of transportation within the city.

Sustainable tourism is conscientious travel, and this means being careful with the environment and respecting the community. Visitors can contribute towards this effort by choosing mass transit over taxis, staying at eco-friendly New York City hotels or homestays that make an effort to be “green,” shopping at a locally owned store, and eating at a diner or coffee shop instead of at a branded fast-food chain. Plus, New York City recycles its bottles and cans (including bottled water), and travelers can look for containers for recyclables before discarding litter.

Outside of the everyday small things that people can do to be eco-friendly during an NYC vacation, they can also be kind to the environment while sightseeing and having fun in the Big Apple. Tourists have an incredible amount of interesting things to do in NYC, and the city offers them lots of eco-friendly options while doing so - in the form of eco-friendly NYC tours. Here is a list of some of the best eco-tours in New York City that let travelers explore its top sights and sounds while ensuring a low-impact, low carbon footprint at the same time.
