Burna Boy celebrates with his triumphant manager (and mother) Bose Ogulu at 2022 Artist & Manager Awards

The 2022 Artist & Manager Awards in association with beatBread has been staged at London’s Bloomsbury Big Top.

Major winners included Becky Hill , Tim Burgess, Burna Boy’s manager Bose Ogulu, and Martin Hall, long-time manager of Manic Street Preachers, The Script and Wet Leg. 

Attracting almost 600 guests from across the music business, the event is organised by the Featured Artists Coalition (FAC) and Music Managers Forum (MMF) and celebrates creative and commercial successes across the artist and management community. 

Becky Hill was crowned Artist of the Year, presented by her manager Alex Martin and tour manager Amanda Barker, alongside music legend Nile Rodgers and Hipgnosis founder Merck Mercuriadis. 

Bose Ogulu received the award for Manager of the Year from her son, the global superstar Burna Boy, and Sheniece Charway, artist relations manager at YouTube Music. 

Bose Ogulu is interviewed in the latest issue of Music Week about her key role in Burna Boy’s stellar career.

The lifetime achievement awards for Artists’ Artist and Managers’ Manager also recognised two highly respected individuals: Tim Burgess saluted for over 30 years as a songwriter and performer, and Martin Hall for his long-term successes in music management. 

Tim Burgess received his award from Brix Smith and PPL chief executive Peter Leathem, while Martin Hall ’s was preceded by a warm speech from PR guru Terri Hall and video messages from Manic Street Preachers, The Script’s Danny O’Donoghue, Wet Leg and Sony Music CEO Rob Stringer.

“How many managers can say that 25 years ago they were taking a new band to No.1 in the album charts, and here they are again, in 2022, managing a new band to No.1 in the album chart,” said Rob Stringer . “That longevity speaks volumes for you Martin.” 

The ceremony also featured several surprise announcements, with the founders of Groundworks - Bills, Jeffrey Owusu-Dankwa and Niall 'Louis' Bentil - receiving a special award for Team Achievement. Following a speech from Colin Batsa, president of EGA Music Group , they were joined onstage by artists Digga D, M Huncho and Potter Payper.

Awards for Breakthrough Artist and Breakthrough Manager were also revealed on the night, with the former going to Beabadoobee (presented by Primal Scream’s Simone Marie Butler and Spotify’s Ruth Collett, and collected by Chris Melian from management company Dirty Hit). 

The Breakthrough Manager award went to Callum Reece at One House for his successes with the likes of Eliza Rose , Sherelle, Cktrl and Mwanjé. Reece’s award was presented by MMF chair and vice chair, Paul Craig and Kwame Kwaten, with Amazon Music’s Laura Lukanz and Hazel Berry.

Pete Tong and TikTok’s David Mogendorff presented Carl Cox as Pioneer. As Cox was playing a set in Australia, his manager Alon Shulman received the award. 

Meanwhile, Björn Ulvaeus sent a video message to Svana Gisla, Ludvig Andersson and Baillie Walsh, the show producers and director behind ABBA Voyage. They were presented with their award for Innovation by Imogen Heap and Utopia Music’s Roberto Neri.  

James Sandom and Tyler Brown at Red Light Management were presented with their award for Writer/Producer Manager by Lewis Thompson, hitmaker for the likes of David Guetta, Anne-Marie and Joel Corry.

Krept & Konan were recognised in the Entrepreneur category for their succession of commercial ventures, including the soul food restaurant Crepes & Cones and Nala’s Baby, their range of baby skin care products. Their award was accepted by manager Riki Bleau. 

Music Declares Emergency were named 2022’s Industry Champions for their impactful campaigning around climate change which is driving momentum towards more environmentally sustainable practices - particularly in live touring. Presented by Sam Lee, the award was accepted by co-founder Lewis Jamieson and director of creative strategy and artist spokesperson Fay Milton.

“There’s no point pulling any punches,” said Martin. “For the majority of artists, the past few years have been pretty hard. We’ve had Brexit, a pandemic, and now a cost of living crisis. It’s been tough to make a living from music, and it remains tough.”

“Without addressing these issues, the next generation will really struggle to break through - and that will have ramifications for every promoter, record label, music publisher and tech company here tonight,” added Coldrick.

The ceremony was hosted by Doc Brown (aka Ben Bailey Smith) and there were performances from London-based pop-punk artist Girli and the rapper FelixThe1st.

Burna Boy’s Mom Bose Ogulu Named Manager of the Year at 2022 Artist & Manager Awards: Full Winners List

Becky Hill was named artist of the year at the event, which was held in London on Thursday night.

Bose Ogulu received the award for manager of the year from her son and star client, Burna Boy , at the 2022 Artist & Manager Awards, which were presented at London’s Bloomsbury Big Top on Thursday (Nov. 17). The event, presented in association with beatBread, is organized by the Featured Artists Coalition (FAC) and Music Managers Forum (MMF) and celebrates creative and commercial successes across the artist and management community.

Becky Hill was named artist of the year. Hill had a top five hit on the Official U.K. Singles Chart in 2022 – “Crazy What Love Can Do,” a collab with David Guetta and Ella Henderson . She won a BRIT Award for best dance act in February. Her award was presented by her manager Alex Martin and tour manager Amanda Barker , alongside music legend Nile Rodgers and Hipgnosis founder Merck Mercuriadis .

Awards for Breakthrough Artist and Breakthrough Manager were also presented, with the former going to Beabadoobee and the latter to Callum Reece at One House for his success with the likes of Eliza Rose , Sherelle , cktrl and Mwanjé .

ABBA Voyage received the Innovation award. The album at the center of the project topped the Official U.K. Albums Chart and reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200. It received a Grammy nomination for album of the year on Tuesday Nov. 15. ABBA co-founder Björn Ulvaeus sent a video message to Svana Gisla , Ludvig Andersson and Baillie Walsh , the producers and director behind ABBA Voyage. They were presented with the award by Imogen Heap and Utopia Music’s Roberto Neri . 

Lifetime achievement awards, dubbed Artists’ Artist and Managers’ Manager, went to songwriter and performer Tim Burgess and manager Martin Hall , respectively. Hall has managed Manic Street Preachers , The Script and Wet Leg , among others.

Burgess received his award from Brix Smith and PPL Chief Executive Peter Leathem . Hall’s award was preceded by video messages from Manic Street Preachers, The Script’s Danny O’Donoghue , Wet Leg and Sony Music chairman Rob Stringer , who said: “How many managers can say that 25 years ago they were taking a new band to No. 1 in the album charts, and here they are again, in 2022, managing a new band to No. 1 in the album chart. Indeed, Manic Street Preachers’ This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours topped the Official U.K. Albums Chart in 1998. Wet Leg’s Wet Leg topped that same chart this year. Moreover, Wet Leg was nominated for four Grammy Awards, including best new artist, on Tuesday.

The ongoing challenges surrounding live music were raised in a joint opening address by the FAC’s CEO, David Martin , and Annabella Coldrick , chief executive of the MMF. 

“There’s no point pulling any punches,” Martin said. “For the majority of artists, the past few years have been pretty hard. We’ve had Brexit, a pandemic, and now a cost-of-living crisis. It’s been tough to make a living from music, and it remains tough.”

“Without addressing these issues, the next generation will really struggle to break through – and that will have ramifications for every promoter, record label, music publisher and tech company here tonight,” Coldrick added.

The show also recognized the work of Music Declares Emergency as 2022’s Industry Champions for driving momentum towards more environmentally sustainable practices – particularly in live touring. Amanda J. Barker is an American, Canadian, and Italian comedic and dramatic actress, writer, director, and producer. She is best and widely known for her roles in The Handmaid’s Tale, Ginny and Georgia, Mayor of Kingstown, American Gods, and Murdoch Mysteries.

Barker was born to Daniel Barker who is a drummer and cymbal maker, and Valerie Gibson Barker who is a dance and performing arts teacher, in Hanover, Massachusetts. After high school, she attended Mount Allison University graduating with a double major as an English Literature, Drama, and a minor in Canadian Studies. Later after her graduation, Amanda worked and lived in Monaco and later as an English teacher in Seoul.

She moved to Toronto to pursue acting in 2000, after a stint working for Royal Caribbean International. The Canadian actress began working as major league baseball’s only female mascot, Diamond, with the Toronto Blue Jays until she left to work at the Second City.

The actress met her future husband Marco Timpano performing in Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding and eventually performed with Second City’s Touring Company and then eventually for Norwegian Cruise Lines. The couple married in 2010.

In 2012, Barker was a writer and star in the hit show Release the stars: The Ballad of Randy and Evi Quaid at the Toronto fringe festival which brought the controversial title pair out of a year of hiding with their surprise attendance. In 2015, the Amanda began working full time on air for Sirius XM for Humble & Fred after a year of filling in for former co-host Eileen Ross and would continue in that role until 2020. In 2018 her musical Little Black Dress, co-authored with Christopher Bond, Natalie Tenenbaum, and Danielle Trczinski, began touring North America.

In 2019 her play Clotheswap opened at the Textile Museum of Canada which garnered buzz in Toronto for its interactive component as both a show and a Clothing swap. Still the same year, Barker won the Canadian Comedy Award for best comedic performance for the webseries A Gay Victorian Affair. Amanda and husband Marco Timpano host and produce The Insomnia Project podcast for Acast with over 2 million downloads.

In the spring of 2023, it was announced that she would be in Thanksgiving, a film directed by Eli Roth. In the summer of 2023, Barker was shooing a new feature with Lily Singh.
