Matej Mohorič earns Bahrain-Victorious third 2023 Tour stage triumph

Three different Bahrain-Victorious riders have won stages of the 2023 Tour de France after Matej Mohorič beat Thursday’s winner Kasper Asgreen in a photo finish on Friday. He joins teammates Pello Bilbao and Wout Poels as recipients of the day’s flowers. Mohorič also claimed two stages in the 2021 Tour. It was another breakaway triumph with two stages to go and the second win for a Slovenian. Jonas Vingegaard stayed safe in yellow. Hugo Houle was the top Canadian in 16th.

Friday’s fare was a little more lumpy than Thursday’s, although both held two climbs. The final ascent, Cat. 3 Côte d’Ivory, peaked 28 km from the finish line in Poligny.

It took a long time for a breakaway to form, although there were numerous attacks, counterattacks and splits in the peloton early in the day. Finally, a nontet centered around Julian Alaphilippe and green jersey Jasper Philipsen established itself as the day’s hopefuls, but just after the 100 km mark, another bigger bunch containing Tom Pidcock and Hugo Houle branched off from the peloton and bridged. With 66 km to go, the peloton had a 36-strong breakaway a minute up the road.

From this raft of riders, Victor Campenaerts, who was part of Thursday’s successful breakaway, flared out with Simon Clarke. It was at this point that the peloton sat up. With 40 km remaining, Campy and Clarke had nearly a minute on the Alaphilippe-Houle group and 4:30 on the yellow jersey group.

On Côte d’Ivory, Asgreen, Mohorič and Ben O’Connor shot to the front. The trio tipped over 19 seconds clear of their closest pursuers.

Poligny drew closer. The trio had to worry about being caught by Philipsen, Mathieu van der Poel and Mads Pedersen’s chase group. With 7 km to race, the gap was 27 seconds. The final 5 km were dead straight.

O’Connor led under the red kite. Asgreen and Mohorič came around him, the Dane in Position 1. The Slovenian popped out and they went shoulder to shoulder, so close at the line it couldn’t be called. But it was the pearl-clad Slovenian with the win.

Saturday is the penultimate stage of the 110th Tour, a mountainous course with two Cat. 1 climbs at the end for the final GC tussles.

The 110th edition of the Tour de France has delivered excitement and head-to-head action amongst the cycling world’s greatest talents. As the Tour enters its final weeks, we got to sit down with Australian climbing powerhouse Jack Haig from Team Bahrain Victorious for a quick interview. We discuss everything from World Tour tire selection, climbing-specific bikes (and paint), favorite on-the-bike food, and how to avoid overly excited fans. Enjoy!

BikeRumor: The 2023 Tour de France is non-stop action for us watching; I can’t image what you all are going through actually racing it. How has the Tour been for you this far? Are you happy for the rest day?

Jack Haig: To be honest, this Tour has probably been one of the most intense grand tours I’ve ever done; I think it’s a combination of many things. But the race route this year has really led to some exciting racing, and with Pogacar and Jonas so close in ability, which has meant they’ve needed to try and test each other at every opportunity.

BR: You were a last-minute addition for the Tour and just came off the Giro. How did you change your training and recover so quickly?

JH: I was also a last-minute selection for Dauphine as well, and then after Dauphine went relatively well, the team came up with the idea to do the tour, and I was happy to take on the challenge. I basically haven’t trained properly since before the Tour of the Alps. After Dauphine, I went on a small holiday with the family, then only one and a half weeks at home before leaving for the tour.

BR: The Tour is nearing its crescendo in the high mountains, and weight is seemingly everything. Are there many bike or equipment changes the team does to prep for the Alps?

JH: We have some special frames without paint for the climbers in the team to save a little bit of weight. We also use the TT tyres from Continental because they are a tiny bit lighter, and we have two different Vision wheels, a shallower/lighter version, and a deeper, more aero wheel—otherwise, not many changes.

BR : Eating lunch on the bike for three weeks seems…rough. Is there a food or item in your musette that excites you when you get it?

JH: We have some special rice cake made with puffed rice, and sometimes even coco pops instead of the puffed rice, and then they are mixed with marshmallows. I quite enjoy these, but the racing has been so hard I haven’t had many opportunities to enjoy the food on the bike.

BR: Fan and vehicle interference has been in the news lately. Riders have to read the race and the throngs of fans around them. Is it hard to ride being so surrounded by fans? Are you always alert for a rogue bag, phone, or animal that might take out a rider?

JH: As professional cycling gets increasingly popular, it can become even more of a problem. It’s hard because, as a sport, we need the fans, and it’s also a pretty iconic part of our sport, but when it influences the race or causes crashes, it’s really not very nice. I’m unsure what we can do to help or change this going forward. I’m also surprised we don’t have more incidents considering how many close calls we’ve had.

BR: Team Bahrain Victorious rides Merida Bikes, and we mostly see the riders reach for the Merida Reacto ; a more aero-all-around design frame. For the Alps, will you ride the Merida Scultra for the weight savings, or is aerodynamics the critical metric?

JH: I almost exclusively use the Scultra, Merida did an excellent job at making the new Scultra very close to the Reacto in terms of aerodynamics and it’s considerably lighter and has a nicer feeling when climbing.

BR: Tire talk — we (non-World Tour riders) all love wider tires. 26-30mm tires seem to be the new standard for road riding, same with tubeless and hookless. Has Team Bahrain Victorious gone all in on tubeless, or is the tech just not quite there for the demands of the World Tour? Is the team on most 26mm tires, or do you switch widths depending on the stage’s demands?

JH: We at Team Bahrain Victorious exclusively use tubeless wheels and tires, and generally, we use 28mm continental tires. The only thing we change is continental make a TT-specific tire, and we use these obviously in TT’s but also some mountain stages because it’s a little less weight.

Tour de France Jack Haig climbing

BR: You’ve had a super busy year — what does the next couple of months look like? Time off for a holiday with the family or back to work?

JH: To be honest, I’m not 100% sure what I will be doing after the tour. Maybe Classica San Sebastian, and then after that, I’m not really sure. Hopefully, I get a little time to spend with my family because it’s been a very intense year with a lot of time away from home.

BR: Lastly — Do you have any words of encouragement for young riders watching the Tour de France, hoping to join the sport’s highest ranks?

JH: I think the most important thing is to enjoy yourself, constantly ride, and try to improve. You’ll progress if you constantly work a little bit each day and have fun. You’ll continue to improve, and before you know it, race results, teams, and eventual riding will improve. Maybe having a contract in the world tour will come, and if it doesn’t — you will at least have fun along the way.

Bahrain Victorious Team Talk: A year of contrasting emotions

Consistent success in Grand Tours overshadowed by tragedy

Bahrain-Victorious 2024 Team Talk

The 2023 campaign was a season of contrasting emotions for the Bahrain Victorious team.

Results-wise, the team prioritised quality over quantity when it came to wins, with six Grand Tour stage victories and a UCI gravel world title thrown in for good measure. Consistency in stage racing, a hallmark of the team over the years, was once again accomplished.

The talismanic Matej Mohorič led from the front with a volley of wins and standout performances, while Santiago Buitrago , Wout Poel , Jonathan Milan , Damiano Caruso and Pello Bilbao all chipped in with vital contributions.

Bahrain Victorious ride in memory of Gino Mäder

The off-season saw Mikel Landa and Milan leave for pastures new, whilst the team have been unable to recruit like-for-like replacements heading into the new season. Instead, they have focussed on developing young talent, whilst also eeking out the last few drops of success from their veteran line.

Of course, the entire season was overshadowed by the tragic death of Gino Mäder, who, at the age of just 26, lost his life as a result of a crash at the Tour de Suisse in June.

GCN 2023 review

It feels pointless and almost soulless to be reviewing a team’s results after the tragic loss of one of their riders, and there’s no doubt that Mäder’s death leaves an indelible hole in a team in which he was such an important character.

Gino Mäder died in a crash at the Tour de Suisse in June

Gino Mäder died in a crash at the Tour de Suisse in June

His vibrancy and attitude, not just in cycling but the world and environment around him, was a blessing to our sport, whilst the team, and more specifically the riders, deserve respect and compassion for the way in which they paid tribute to their teammate and then raced in his honour. All three Tour de France stage wins in July were dedicated to Mäder by Poels, Bilbao and Mohorič.

It didn’t feel like Bahrain-Victorious won a huge amount in 2023, and their win tally of 20 was relatively modest, but they stood up in the biggest races and delivered. As well as taking stage wins in all three Grand Tours, the team’s consistency once again netted top-10 overall finishes in all three, too.

Outside of the Grand Tours, the team picked up placings and podiums at almost every turn, and, although they only amassed 20 wins on the road, 12 of them were WorldTour, and one of them was a world title. The only blemish in terms of results were perhaps the cobbled Classics, where they’ve still not found a replacement for Sonny Colbrelli. Mohorič was consistent but unable to improve on his third place in Kuurn-Brussel-Kuurne.

Milan and Bauhaus chipped in with wins, and the team came home with the points jersey and overall team classification at the Giro d’Italia.

Ins & Outs

This team haven’t signed a proven winner or marquee rider since their 2020 season and the partnership with McLaren. In the years that have followed, the MO has been directed towards filling gaps, picking up bargains, or hunting for talent that hasn’t quite established itself. That worked with signings like Jack Haig and Mäder in 2021 but since then the team have signed just three riders from the WorldTour ranks, with the rest of their recruits have come from the lower divisions or the U23 ranks.

That trend continues into 2024, with just three new faces joining the team. Finlay Pickering arrives from Trinity Racing and looks like a promising talent who will have room to grow. At the same time, Torstein Træen is a solid all-rounder who finished eighth in the Critérium du Dauphiné and completed his first Grand Tour at the Tour de France this year after returning from cancer. Italian sprinter Alberto Bruttomesso has joined from the Continental ranks and will have plenty of chances to shine.

Mikel Landa chasing the leaders at the Vuelta a España

Mikel Landa chasing the leaders at the Vuelta a España

Overall, though, it’s been an underwhelming transfer window once again. The incomings look especially average compared to the talent that has left the team. Mikel Landa, despite turning 34 later this month, still picks up plenty of UCI points and finished fifth in the Vuelta a España this year, and although losing a veteran who didn’t win a single race in 2023 might not look like a setback, the Spaniard formed part of the team’s bedrock when it came to stage racing dependability.

Filip Maciejuk is a solid domestique who has been picked up by Bora-Hansgrohe, and Milan is a huge loss, both in terms of the immediate future and the long-term. He’s 23 and a proven stage winner in Grand Tours. Heinrich Haussler was forced to stop his career, and although past his best, was still a huge asset in the spring Classics.

Where Bahrain Victorious’ wins will come from in 2024

Without a major league sprinter or a stage racing superstar, it’s hard to see where the consistent stream of victories will come from in 2024.

Instead, Bahrain Victorious will rely on the firepower of Mohorič, who chipped in with seven wins last year to lead the line from January to October. Bilbao should remain dependable in Grand Tours and pick up a top-10 and a couple of victories on his travels, but overall the team will be hoping for another collective approach from within the roster.

Matej Mohorič celebrates a stage win at the Renewi Tour 2023

Matej Mohorič celebrates a stage win at the Renewi Tour 2023

Fred Wright is due a big win, or two, whilst Poels will pop up with some fireworks if he’s able to infiltrate the right breaks in Grand Tours. Bauhaus will hope to turn his healthy splattering of placings into more wins but Buitrago could become a genuine linchpin within the team after Grand Tour stage wins in back-to-back seasons and his first top-10 in a three-week race.

This team doesn’t have a 10-win-a-season rider but what it does have is depth and durability. How long that can continue with some of the elder statesmen on the team remains to be seen, but there’s still some untapped potential, with Jack Haig looking to rediscover the form that helped him secure a podium at the Vuelta a couple of years ago.

Finlay Pickering riding the Mont Ventoux Denivele Challenge

Finlay Pickering riding the Mont Ventoux Denivele Challenge

Finlay Pickering, 20, looks like a real find for the team. The British climber started with the Groupama development programme in 2022 before switching to Trinity Racing at the start of this year and already the youngster has built up an impressive palmarès . A pure climber, he won a stage and the overall at the Tour Alsace in 2022 and at Bahrain Victorious he will have plenty of level-headed experience to guide him into WorldTour stage racing.

Three Teams Drop Out of Tour de Suisse After Cyclist’s Death

Gino Mäder’s Bahrain-Victorious squad and two other teams withdrew on Saturday, but organizers said they would complete the multistage race this weekend.

By Andrew Das

The Tour de Suisse cycling race resumed its multistage competition on Saturday, one day after a rider died from the injuries that he sustained in a crash during a high-speed mountain descent.

The rider, Gino Mäder, was a member of the Bahrain-Victorious team, which announced on Saturday morning that it was withdrawing from the race. Two other teams, Tudor Pro and Intermarché-Circus-Wanty , also said they had decided to leave the race.

The Bahrain-Victorious team’s riders, as well as the rest of the competitors, were informed of Mäder’s death on Friday morning — a day after he went off the course and tumbled down a steep ravine. The riders participated in a shortened memorial ride on Friday that replaced the day’s stage, which was called off.

But with the race, an important tuneup for the Tour de France next month, set to return for its final two competitive stages this weekend, Bahrain-Victorious confirmed on social media on Saturday morning that its team would not take part.

“Following the tragic loss of Gino Mäder,” the team said in a post on Twitter, “Team Bahrain Victorious has taken the decision to withdraw from Tour de Suisse.”

Two other teams quickly followed suit. Both cited the well-being of their riders in their decisions to drop out. “Under these difficult circumstances we feel it is the human way to respect the feelings of our riders and pay respect to Gino,” Tudor Pro’s statement said.

Race officials said late Friday that they had made the decision to continue the race in consultation with the family of Mäder, one of Switzerland’s best young riders. A four-stage women’s event began on Saturday as planned.

“After consultation with all the people involved, we as the management stand united behind this decision and are trying to hold the last two stages of the men’s race in an appropriate setting,” the tour’s race director, Olivier Senn, said in a statement.

“Today was the worst day of my life,” Senn added in the statement. “But tomorrow is a new day, and that’s what we have to take care of as an organization.”

The police are investigating the crash, and officials were reported to be interested in hearing from any witnesses who might have seen and filmed the episode.

Mäder crashed along with an American rider, Magnus Sheffield, on Thursday near the end of the fifth stage of the weeklong race, which ends with a final descent down the Albula Pass. The final section where the crash occurred, just after a sweeping downhill curve on an unprotected road with mountains to its left and a steep drop-off just beyond its right edge, was largely empty when the riders passed through it.

Photographs of the area of the crash showed what appeared to be two sets of tire tracks leading to the edge of a sharp drop above the site where Mäder and Sheffield fell.

Mäder and Sheffield were treated where they came to rest, near a set of drainage pipes down a long slope. Sheffield, who was reported to have sustained a concussion and cuts and bruises, appeared to be able to walk back up the hill with assistance. Race officials said Mäder was revived at the scene after being discovered “motionless in the water.” After initial treatment, he was evacuated from the scene in a helicopter.

At least one rider, the reigning world champion Remco Evenepoel, suggested that the course did not have to be so treacherous.

“I hope that the final of today’s stage is food for thought for both cycling organizers as well as ourselves as riders,” Evenepoel said on Twitter after the crash but before the severity of Mäder’s condition was known. “It wasn’t a good decision to let us finish down this dangerous descent. As riders, we should also think about the risks we take going down a mountain.”

The Reacto aero bike and Scultura climbing bikes are both at the team’s disposal in the special white livery this month at the Tour. And the team has already racked up an impressive win by Pello Bilbao on stage 10.

Here are the five most interesting things about the Merida team bikes of Bahrain-Victorious at the 2023 Tour de France.

The predominantly white paint of the team’s Tour bikes calls to mind the color of a pearl, while the teal accents are meant to represent the waters of the Arabian Gulf. The gold accents and logos represent the shimmers of pearls.

Vision Metron 5D handlebars

Bahrain-victorious-Tour-de-France-2023-bikes

Both the Merida Reacto and Scultura bikes feature extremely tidy front ends, with no cables in sight, in part thanks to the Vision Metron 5D one-piece handlebar-stem combo. The flat handlebar tops are a given for an aero setup these days. What’s less common is the wing-shaped tops that create an additional aero advantage.

Bahrain-victorious-Tour-de-France-2023-bikes

The handlebar shape has an additional ergonomic benefit that builds in greater comfort. The cockpit has also been designed to be super stiff for sprint finishes like the one Pello Bilbao found himself in to win stage 10 today.

Vision Metron wheels

bahrain victorious tour 2023

The Tour encounters varied terrain. Luckily, the team has Vision wheels at its disposal at a variety of depths to match each stage’s parcours. The team switches between the Vision Metron 45 and 60 SL wheels depending on the day — either rolling/climbing days or flat stages. The rims have been optimized aerodynamically around a 28mm tire.

Continental tubeless tires

Bahrain-victorious-Tour-de-France-2023-bikes

The team has the whole lineup of Continental’s popular top-end Grand Prix 5000 tires at its disposal, and is running them tubeless. Both the 5000 S and the even faster, lighter 5000 TT models are popular with Continental sponsored teams like Bahrain Victorious at this year’s Tour de France.

Tidy race number holders

Bahrain-victorious-Tour-de-France-2023-bikes

Teams employ a variety of tactics for attaching race numbers to bikes at the Tour de France. Some use simple zip ties for the number holder, while others opt for slightly more purpose-built mounts that wrap around the seatpost. But the tactic that ends up looking best is often a glued-on number holder like this. It’s not the most high-tech, but it is tidy.

TOUR’23 Stage 19: Mohorič Tops Off An Attacking Fast Day!

Another tough day in the saddle.

' src=

Tour Stage Report: The Tour peloton rode stage 19 like it was a one-day Classic. It was hard to follow the action, as there were attacks, splits and breaks coming and going all day long. In the end, a group of three sprinted it out for Matej Mohorič to just win by the smallest margin from yesterday’s winner, Kasper Asgreen. Ben O’Connor was third.

The final kilometre of stage 19

Matej Mohorič won the 19th stage of the Tour de France. The Slovenian of Bahrain Victorious was the fastest of a leading group of three after 173 kilometres. Mohorič defeated Kasper Asgreen, yesterday’s winner, with a minimal gap. Ben O’Connor was third. Jasper Philipsen and Mathieu van der Poel, who were in a chasing group, were fourth and twelfth. Jonas Vingegaard came in with the peloton to hold the overall lead going into the final weekend.

tdf23 st19

Christian Prudhomme on stage 19: “The stage meanders between the numerous lakes of the Jura, but avoids climbing to the department’s summits. The Côte d’Ivory, located around 30 kilometres from the finish line, won’t prevent the sprinters from taking advantage of a gigantic launch-pad: the final straight is a touch more than eight kilometres long.”

tdf23st19

The nineteenth stage of the Tour de France looked good for an escape. There was only two categorised climbs, but the rest of the stage had no flat roads. The opening section was especially tough. After the Côte d’Ivory (2.4km at 5.8%), the last categorised climb, there was still 30 kilometres to the finish.

tdf23 st19

After the start in Moirans-en-Montagne, there were several break attempts. Victor Campenaerts, one of Thursday’s protagonists, rode solo off the front of the peloton. Later Alexey Lutsenko and Mads Pedersen managed to take a little more space.

tdf23 st19

The two between 10 and 20 seconds off the front for many kilometres. The high pace caused cracks in the peloton. Adam Yates, 3rd overall, missed the split and was soon half a minute down and had to chase. With the help of some teammates, he was able to return to the first large group, where things remained restless. Julian Alaphilippe, Stefan Küng, Nils Politt, Alberto Bettiol, Matej Mohorič and Lars van den Berg all wanted to be in the action.

tdf23 st19

Alaphilippe and Politt were also in the final breakaway, which came about 120 kilometres from the finish. The other riders off the front were Tiesj Benoot, Victor Campenaerts, Matteo Trentin, Jack Haig, Mads Pedersen, Warren Barguil and Georg Zimmermann. They didn’t initially have much of a lead, because Uno-X, Israel-Premier Tech and EF Education-EasyPost continued to chase. The gap was limited to about 1 minute.

tdf23 st19

With 90 kilometres to go, Politt broke his chain and asked for a bike from the Shimano service car, but three times he got a bike that didn’t fit or had the wrong pedals. The powerful German was back in the peloton. The remaining attackers had lost a large engine and that looked like the end for them. At the intermediate sprint, Pedersen came through first, the lead had shrunk to 30 seconds.

tdf23 st19

Philipsen was the first rider in the peloton at the intermediate sprint. Then he pushed on, splitting the group in two. About 30 riders tried to cross to the 8 at the front. In addition to Philipsen, there was Mathieu van der Poel, Dylan Groenewegen and Tom Pidcock. EF Education-EasyPost, Uno-X and Israel-Premier Tech, the teams that initially missed the battle, were now all with several riders.

tdf23 st19

Intermarché-Circus-Wanty, which only had Zimmermann, chase for a while, but eventually the peloton gave up. Jumbo-Visma took control and gave the large group of escapees a good lead. Campenaerts and Simon Clarke (Israel-Premier Tech) had escaped. Despite Uno-X’s work, the duo soon had 1 minute.

tdf23 st19

The difference was reduced again when Clarke cramped 32 kilometres out. Campenaerts had to continue alone, but three riders joined him at the foot of the Côte d’Ivory (2.4km at 5.8%): Ben O’Connor, Matej Mohorič and Kasper Asgreen, Thursday’s winner. The Lotto-Dstny rider was able to hold the three for a while, but in the end it was too fast. He fell back into the chasing group. The first part of that group, including Pedersen and Van der Poel, was 15 seconds behind the three leaders at the summit.

tdf23 st19

Groenewegen and Philipsen returned to this first part of the group, the lead of the three attackers grew again. Christophe Laporte thought he could close the gap. However, he had Mathieu van der Poel on his wheel and the Dutchman didn’t come through. With Philipsen he had the fastest man of the Tour behind him. When Van der Poel jumped away with Bettiol, Zimmermann and Matteo Trentin, he did do some work.

tdf23 st19

The wind caused more splits in the pursuit. Although they were still working. Luka Mezgec, Laporte, Pidcock, Pedersen and Philipsen joined the Van der Poel group, which started to lose some ground to the leading trio. With five kilometres to go, the difference, which had briefly decreased to 15 seconds, had grown again to over 30. The stage would be between O’Connor, Mohorič and Asgreen.

tdf23 st19

The three started the final kilometre together, in which O’Connor tried to surprise his break companions with a long sprint. Asgreen jumped to his wheel and then launched his own sprint. The Dane seemed to be on his way to a double Tour stage victory, but with an extra kick, Mohorič came next to him in the final metres. It looked very close, but the decision went to Mohorič. The Slovenian had won the stage by a very small amount. Asgreen was second, O’Connor third. Less than forty seconds later, Philipsen sprinted to fourth place, after a lead-out from Van der Poel, who finished twelfth.

tdf23 st19

Stage winner, Matej Mohorič (Bahrain Victorious): “This victory means a lot because it’s hard and cruel to be a pro cyclist. You suffer a lot in preparation to get ready, then you realise that everyone is so strong that it’s hard to follow the wheels. The other day, at col de la Loze, I was empty. You see how staffers have to wake up every morning 6AM to work until the night. Sometimes you struggle so much that you think you don’t belong here. Yet you have to realize everyone is struggling. Today I had to follow Kasper [Asgreen]. For Gino [Mäder], for everything. I needed to take his wheel and beat him on the line. When he attacked, I chased him and tried to follow him all the way to the top of the climb. I contributed so we could stay away. When Ben [O’Connor] attacked, I knew he was going to do it because it was the only chance he had. I knew Kasper would react, then I pipped him on the line. I know I’m strong enough to win a stage in the Tour de France, because I’ve done it already. It’s emotional for me and for the team because of the hard times we have gone through.”

tdf23 st19

Overall leader, Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma): “It has been a very difficult start. We had to make sure that no GC guy made the break. Once the break went, we just tried to save some energy. I would describe myself as a big family person, and also a bit shy. As an athlete, I am an aggressive rider who likes to win – like everyone in cycling. I am kind of a warrior on the bike.”

Opportunistic Winning

Damiano Caruso from Bahrain - Victorious 2023 cycling team - Tour de France 2022

As the team name says, the WorldTour team is from the Kingdom of Bahrain which is the co-sponsor since 2017. Obviously, for practical training and racing reasons, the team is based in Europe during the UCI WorldTour season.

The Bahrain – Victorious 2023 cycling team is racing the whole UCI WorldTour calendar including the Spring Classics, the Monuments, and the three Grand Tours.

The team is a opportunist with goals of winning on one-day classics and stage wins.

Bahrain – Victorious 2023 cycling team starts the 2023 racing season on the Santos Tour Down Under with Bilbao, Arndt, Bauhaus, Gradek, Pernsteiner, Scott, and Sütterlin.

MIHOLJEVIĆ Fran, RAJOVIĆ Dušan, GRADEK Kamil, PASQUALON Andrea, MOHORIČ Matej, MILAN Jonathan, and WRIGHT Fred are hitting the Paves of Paris-Roubaix 2023 .

CARUSO Damiano, BUITRAGO Santiago, HAIG Jack, MÄDER Gino, PASQUALON Andrea, MILAN Jonathan, SÜTTERLIN Jasha, and ZAMBANINI Edoardo are aiming at some stage wins on the Giro d’Italia 2023 .

Bilbao, Wright, Landa, Mohorič, and Poels are riding the Tour de France 2023 .

The riders for the Vuelta a Espana 2023 will be selected later after the second part of the cycling season which is around June, or July. The selection will depend on which rider is in great physical form for the third Grand Tour of the season.

Merida Bikes

Bahrain – Victorious team is racing the 2023 season on Merida bikes. The road bikes are the Merida Reacto for the sprinters and the Merida Scultura which is the “Do-it-all” bike for the climbers. Merida Time Warp is the bike for the Time-Trial races.

The Taiwanese bike manufacturer is popular in some countries, especially in Asia, as a rival to Giant bikes, the “other” Taiwanese brand. Merida bikes are not distributed in USA and Canada as Merida is the OEM producer of Specialized bikes. Merida and Specialized have a non-competitive agreement for the North-America market. Hence, no Merida racing bikes in North America.

The bikes are assembled with the Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 9200 12-speed groupset. The Vision Tech wheels are rolling on Continental tires.

The three touch points of Bahrain – Victorious riders are the Vision Tech handlebar/stem combo, Prologo saddles fastened on FSA seat posts, and Shimano SPD-SL pedals.

The riders of Bahrain – Victorious wear Rudy Project helmets and sunglasses, Prologo gloves, Ale cycling jerseys, and bib-shorts.

Like many other teams in the Worldtour, the riders of Bahrain – Victorious team do not have cycling shoes sponsored at a team level. Each rider is free to wear the shoes that fit him best.

Bahrain Victorious unveil white kit and bikes for Tour de France

New look inspired by country's pearl fishing history

Bahrain Victorious unveil their white 2023 Tour de France kit

Bahrain Victorious have unveiled a new look ahead of this year's Tour de France , following the growing trend for teams to launch special edition kits at the Grand Tours.

The team is switching out their red, black, and blue look for a white jersey with gold and teal to pay homage to Bahrain's pearling history.

The country has historically been a world centre for pearl fishing and pearl trading, with pearling the backbone of the country's economy for many years. The team's new design carries across the Alé kit, Rudy Project helmets, and Merida bikes.

Teal accents symbolise the waters of the Arabian Gulf, the team say, while the splashes of gold represent the glint of pearls.

Jumbo-Visma reveal 'sky full of dreams' jersey for Tour de France Rapha stuns with new EF Education-EasyPost Giro d'Italia switch-out kit Jack Haig hit by Grand Tour crash curse again at Giro d'Italia

The new design features four pearls across the top of the chest and also features the new design of one of the team's principal sponsors, Bapco Energies. Otherwise, the sponsors on the jersey and shorts remain largely the same.

The team's Merida bikes – the aero Reacto and the lightweight Scultura – also get new looks with the regular red and black paintwork ditched in favour of a clean white look with gold wording, teal trim, and a 'Team Pearl' decal on the top tubes.

The team are set to be led by Mikel Landa in July as he aims for the Tour podium for the first time. Stage hunters Matej Mohorič and Fred Wright are also down to take on the race, which kicks off in Bilbao on July 1.

The new kit is unlikely to be the only new design debuting at the Tour de France, with the race often seeing teams change up their look with special edition kits. Jumbo-Visma have already unveiled their star-themed kit for the race, while last year the Dutch squad did the same along with Bora-Hansgrohe, Israel-Premier Tech, Trek-Segafredo, and EF Education-EasyPost.

Before Bahrain's kit switch, this year's peloton has been awash with red kits, with Bahrain, Cofidis, Ineos Grenadiers, Arkéa-Samsic, and Lotto-Dstny all sporting red jerseys.

Meanwhile, the change to white could see them clash with white-clad squads AG2R Citroën, UAE Team Emirates, and possibly Trek-Segafredo depending on their rebrand to Lidl-Trek .

The team's Merida bikes also get a new paintjob

Preview of the Tour of the Basque Country 2024 | Vuelta 2023 vibes with Kuss, Vingegaard, Roglic, and Evenepoel!

S unday's Tour of Flanders, followed by Paris-Roubaix the following week, and sandwiched in between, six days of the Tour of the Basque Country: these are exciting times for cycling fans, who may indulge in a week of thrilling duels between Jonas Vingegaard, Remco Evenepoel, and Primoz Roglic. IDLProCycling.com lays it all out!

One look at the honours list of the WorldTour race in the Basque Country tells you everything you need to know: this is no ordinary event. Tour winner Jonas Vingegaard will start as the defending champion, with former teammate and two-time winner Primoz Roglic hot on his heels. In 2022, Daniel Felipe Martínez claimed victory in a race historically dominated by top Spanish cyclists. While Alberto Contador holds multiple wins, other notable names such as Samuel Sanchez, Joaquím Rodríguez, Alejandro Valverde, and Ion Izagirre also grace the illustrious list of winners.

Erik Breukink, the last Dutch winner in 1988, is unlikely to see a successor this year. The Belgians last tasted victory in 1929 with Maurice De Waele, a record that Evenepoel may have the opportunity to break.

Tour of the Basque Country 2024: Course, favorites daily wins and times

Stage 1, monday, april 1: irun - irun (10 km, time trial).

The Tour of the Basque Country kicks off with a ten-kilometer individual time trial in and around Irun. We can call this anything but easy: just after the start, there is a stretch at ten percent on cobblestones, followed fairly quickly by the ascent of Olaberria (1.7 kilometers at 5.2 percent). From the summit, it is about five kilometers downhill before the last few hundred meters also incline upwards.

4.4 km: Olabierra (1.7 km a 5.2%)

Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step)

Primoz Roglic (BORA-hansgrohe)

Juan Ayuso (UAE-Team Emirates

Start: 2:10 p.m.

Finish: 5:30 p.m.

Stage 2, Tuesday, April 2: Irun - Kanbo (160.0 km)

On day two, the riders will cover 160 kilometers of racing, which by Basque standards is relatively flat. Of course, there will be undulations throughout the day, but the major climbs will be absent. In the final kilometer, there is also a slight incline, so t iming will be crucial for the sprinters or escapees vying for victory at that moment.

19.5 km: Saint-Ignace (2.6 km a 5.9%)

Alex Aranburu (Movistar)

Romain Grégoire (Groupama-FDJ)

Andrea Bagioli (Lidl-Trek)

Start: 1:29 p.m.

Finish: 5:29 p.m.

Stage 3, Wednesday, April 3: Ezpeleta - Altasu (190.9 km)

Have a great day! The stage begins with a tough climb right from the start, followed by 190 kilometers and six categorized hills before arriving in Altsasu. Four of the six climbs are situated in the first half of the circuit, while the second part of the race takes place on a plateau, including one ascent. The final 15 kilometers feature a flat course.

8.5 km: Otsondo (8.2 km a 5.7%)

59.8 km: Usategieta Gaina (11.2 km a 3.2%)

70.1 km: Uitzi (4.7 km a 6.9%)

85.5 km: Zuarrarate (6.8 km a 3.6%)

154.2 km: Olabierra (1.6 km a 7.5%)

172.5 km: Uzarrusti (6.6 km a 4.7%)

Pello Bilbao (Bahrain Victorious)

Mattias Skjelmose (Lidl-Trek)

Tom Pidcock (INEOS Grenadiers)

Start: 12:56 p.m.

Stage 4, Thursday, April 4: Etxarri Aranatz - Legutio (157.5 km)

On Thursday, we have a stage similar to Wednesday's, with the notable difference that the focal point now clearly lies in the second half of the stage. There are three climbs in the final forty kilometers, all featuring steep gradients. The last ten kilometers, perhaps as compensation, are flat.

40.8 km: Opakuia (7.1 km a 5.8%)

118.6 km: Olaeta (1.9 km a 9.0%)

132.8 km: Untzilla (2.3 km a 8.5%)

Jonas Vingegaard (Visma | Lease a Bike)

Stage 5, Friday, April 5: Vitoria-Gasteiz - Amorebieta-Etxano (175.9 km)

Stage 5 of the Tour of the Basque Country starts in Vitoria-Gasteiz, following a relatively gentle opening stage. However, things change dramatically from Urkiola, a 5.5-kilometer climb with an average gradient of almost ten percent. In the final stage, the route includes two additional local circuits in and around the finish town of Amorebieta-Etxano, featuring the Muniketagaina climb (3.5 km at 7.5%).

87.8 km: Urkiola (5.5 km a 9.4%)

137.9 km: Muniketagaina (3.5 km a 7.5%)

163.7 km: Muniketagaina (3.5 km a 7.5%)

Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost)

David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ)

Brandon McNulty (UAE-Team Emirates)

Start: 1:06 p.m.

Stage 6, Sunday, April 6: Eibar - Eibar (137.8 km)

Once again, the toughest challenge is being saved for last. The organizers of the Tour of the Basque Country have chosen to replicate last year's stage, where Jonas Vingegaard emerged victorious. A total of seven (!) hills must be conquered in the 137 km-long stage, promising another chaotic day of racing!

13,5 km: Elkorrieta (2,6 km a 6,7%)

24,9 km: Azurki (5,1 km a 7,4%)

45 km: Gorla (9,6 km a 5,7%)

70,2 km: Krabelin (5 km a 9,6%)

92,6 km: Trabakua (3,3 km a 7,1%)

111 km: Izua (4,1 km a 9,2%)

125,3 km: Urkaregi (5,1 km a 4,8%)

Santiago Buitrago (Bahrain Victorious)

Adam Yates (UAE-Team Emirates)

Start: 2:04 p.m.

Favorites final classification Tour of the Basque Country 2024

What an impressive field of competitors they've assembled in the Basque Country. Jonas Vingegaard (Visma | Lease a Bike) stands as the top favorite, being the defending champion and a two-time winner of the Tour de France. However, even the Dane won't have it easy this year. He'll need the support of Sepp Kuss, who wasn't at his best in Catalonia, and Steven Kruijswijk.

Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step) and Primoz Roglic (BORA-hansgrohe) are also participating, meaning we'll witness three of the top four Tour de France favorites in action in the Basque Country. With Mikel Landa also in the mix, it seems like a rerun of last year's Vuelta! Evenepoel already displayed his eagerness in Paris-Nice, while Roglic seemed to be playing catch-up in that race for BORA-hansgrohe. By the way, Jai Hindley is also starting in the Basque Country.

However, it's not just a three-way battle we'll be witnessing. Mattias Skjelmose is there as a leader for Lidl-Trek, gearing up for the Ardennes Classics, where Tom Pidcock takes on a similar role at INEOS Grenadiers. Both riders have the strength to tackle the Basque hills, making them formidable adversaries. Additionally, INEOS will see Carlos Rodríguez, although he hasn't been performing at his best this year.

Bahrain Victorious and UAE-Team Emirates have several contenders to watch. The Bahraini team boasts home rider Pello Bilbao and rising star Santiago Buitrago , while the Emirates team presents its usual star-studded lineup. Adam Yates is set to make his return, Juan Ayuso is in the mix, Brandon McNulty is on the provisional start list, Isaac del Toro is emerging, and the list goes on!

Moving on to the outsiders, Felix Gall of Decathlon AG2R has proven his prowess in this race, as has former Cofidis winner Ion Izagirre. Groupama-FDJ is pinning hopes on the comeback of David Gaudu and the promising talent Romain Grégoire . Simon Yates is expected to shine for Jayco AlUla, a role that Olympic champion Richard Carapaz is likely to take on at EF Education-EasyPost. Meanwhile, dsm-firmenich PostNL is banking on two contenders accustomed to high altitude: Warren Barguil and Oscar Onley.

According to IDLProCycling.com , who are the favorites for the final classification of the 2024 Tour of the Basque Country?

Top favorites: Jonas Vingegaard (Visma | Lease a Bike) and Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step)

Outsiders: Primoz Roglic (BORA-hansgrohe), Juan Ayuso (UAE-Team Emirates), Mattias Skjelmose (Lidl-Trek) and Pello Bilbao (Bahrain Victorious)

Long shots: Mikel Landa (Soudal Quick-Step), Tom Pidcock (INEOS Grenadiers), Felix Gall (Decathlon AG2R), Adam Yates, Brandon McNulty (UAE-Team Emirates), Jai Hindley (BORA-hansgrohe), Simon Yates (Jayco AlUla), Santiago Buitrago (Bahrain Victorious) and Romain Grégoire (Groupama-FDJ)
