Phinda is Kwazulu Natal's best private game reserve. It is on a par with some of the best reserves in the popular Sabi Sands near Kruger National Park, except that it is fully fenced and thus not part of a greater ecosystem. All of the Big Five are easily spotted. The reserve's flagship species is cheetah and sightings of this gracious cat are unsurpassed.

Phinda GR Safari Reviews

  • User Rating 4.5 /5 – 28 Reviews

Phinda offers some of the best wildlife viewing in the country. All big safari animals, including the Big Five , are usually spotted on a two-night stay. Aside from the Big Five , there is a major focus on cheetah, as Phinda is renowned for its sightings of this streamlined cat. Both rhino species are present and regularly seen.

  • More about Phinda’s wildlife

Four different lodges have been positioned to experience the different habitats within the park. Forest Lodge is set deep in the heart of the rare, dry sand forest, while Mountain Lodge looks out over the reserve from the top of a koppie. Vlei Lodge overlooks the vast wetland, and Rock Lodge sits suspended over a deep valley below.

Phinda Game Reserve has a sub-tropical climate that brings plenty of humidity and rain during the summer period (October to April). February is by far the stickiest month, with the heat and precipitation at their highest. By contrast, winter (May to September) is hot but not sweltering, with things cooling right down at night.

  • More about the weather and climate

You can see animals at any time of year at Phinda, but the drier months (May to September) have the best conditions for wildlife watching. There’s little rain, and as a consequence, the undergrowth recedes, so animals are easier to spot. They also make their way to local waterholes and rivers, as other water sources have dried up. That said, the rainy months (October to April) are when you’ll see migrating birds and newborn animals.

Much more than just a superb Big Five reserve

If you’ve already ticked off the Big Five, at least once, then the mere fact that Phinda harbours elephants, leopards, lions, buffalo and rhino may not be enough to attract you. But there’s a world of difference between seeing these...

Go On Safari With This Guide

WHY AND HOW DID YOU BECOME A SAFARI GUIDE?

I've always had a love for the African bush and after completing a degree in Investment Management, I deciding to pursue the fascination with nature and become a guide. I found out about a well regarded training program through family and joined the course a month after graduating.

WHAT MAKES A GOOD SAFARI GUIDE?

A love for people is just as important as a passion for nature when it comes to guiding. A passionate, curious nature coupled with good enthusiastic communication skills helps a lot.

A keen eye for the small details, awareness of his/her surroundings and a good sense of humor are other qualities that I would look for in a guide.

FAVOURITE ANIMAL?

It depends on the moment, the interaction, the guests that I am with and the surroundings. Black rhino, wild dog, cheetah, lion, crowned eagle, leatherback turtle, leopard, African Broadbill...the list is endless.

BEST EXPERIENCE OF YOUR GUIDING CAREER?

This is also a very tough one to answer. Any uninterrupted interaction between species is amazing. It is an amazing privilege to be able to view any animal in its natural habitat without disturbing its behavior.

GUIDING AREA OF SPECIALIZATION?

Guiding guests during a specialist safari allows me to focus on any guest's interest whether it is birding, photography or walking. I enjoy spending time on foot tracking animals and you could not spend time in Maputaland without being enthralled by its diversity of bird species..

Wildlife & Birds

Phinda Private Game Reserve was once a cultivated tract of land but after extensive efforts over a sustained period of time the area has been restored to its original wilderness state.

The big game that you find here now is similar to what would have been around before man set foot in this wilderness namely African elephant, white & black rhino, lion, buffalo, leopard and cheetah. Rare antelope species like the red duiker and suni can also be seen.

On the bird watching front there are 415 species to be discovered with two notables being the Pel's Fishing Owl and the African Finfoot.

Accommodation Icon

Accommodation

For a reasonably small reserve, it offers many places to stay, all of them of a very high quality.

There are six lodges in total covering the different biomes occurring in the area namely Phinda Forest Lodge, Mountain Lodge, Vlei Lodge, Rock Lodge, Zuka Lodge, and the Homestead.

No fences allow the buildings to immerse in their surroundings and they are designed to ensure privacy and exclusivity for the occupants.

Weather Icon

The rainy season in Phinda runs from October to April with the highest average occurring in February of 107 mm (4.2 in). There is rain in the dry winter months but not much as proved by the average rainfall measurement in June of only 18 mm (0.7 in).

Wildlife sightings are good all year round but will probably be a bit better in the dry months as the vegetation is not as dense and the animals stick to areas with water rather than dispersing like they do in the wetter times.

Summer occurs here from October to April with an average maximum temperature of 29 °C (84.2 °F) and an average minimum temperature of 18 °C (64.4 °F). Winters (May to September) can be very cold on early morning game drives so bring warm clothing as average minimum temperatures drop to 12 °C (53 °F) and 25 °C (77 °F) during the day.

Size Icon

Size And Distance

This is a relatively small reserve measuring 23 000 hectares (230 ㎢) but it's more than large enough for all the wonderful wildlife living here.

The longest distance from north to south as the crow flies is 26 km (16 mi) and from east to west is 9.8 km (6.14 mi). The closest city is Richards Bay which lies 125 km (77 mi) away.

And lying only 26 km (16 mi) due west are the warm waters and white beaches of the Indian Ocean and 17 km (11 mi) due south is the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi game reserve.

Flights Icon

Phinda Game Reserve is accessible by plane using scheduled or charter flights. International visitors can fly into OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg or Cape Town International Airport (CPT) and then take a connecting flight to the Richards Bay airport (RCB).

There are several airlines that fly the Richards Bay route domestically and once there Federal Air has a daily shuttle service that flies directly to the Phinda airstrip.

Another option is fly to King Shaka International Airport (DUR) in Durban and then drive the 269 km (167 mi) to the reserve in a rented vehicle.

Phinda Game Reserve | Travel guide

Phinda Private Game Reserve, formerly known as Phinda Resource Reserve, is a 170 km² private game reserve situated in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, between the Mkuze Game Reserve and the Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park.

Designated in 1991, Phinda is a Zulu word meaning ‘return’, or more accurately ‘repeat’ and with its seven distinct habitats, Phinda is often described as ‘Seven Worlds of Wonder’.

The reserve is a magnificent tapestry of woodland, grassland, wetland and forest interspersed with mountain ranges, rivers, marshes and pans.

Another notable feature is its location, in close proximity to the unspoiled beaches and spectacular coral reefs of the Indian Ocean, offering an unmatched combination of bush and beach adventures, including the diving mecca of Sodwana Bay.

Why visit Phinda Game Reserve?

Phinda game reserve safari.

With this much biodiversity, it’s no wonder that the Big Five and other endangered animals call this home. Visitors are bound to see the world’s fastest land mammal (cheetah) on a safari to Phinda, as well as endangered black rhino and turtles who lay their eggs on these beaches.

The reserve is a superb safari option for malaria-free, family-based travel, as well as couples who want a little more privacy and five-star accommodation.

There are ample child-friendly safari packages available for traveling families. Educate your children about the earth’s natural heritage on guided bush walks, insect hunts, child-friendly game drives, an introduction to basic astronomy and arts and crafts. Babysitting facilities are also available at certain lodges.

The reserve’s population of nyala is the biggest on private land and guests are guaranteed frequent encounters with this stately animal and the rare dry sand forest at Phinda is also home to the shy suni and the rare red duiker, two tiny antelope that are seldom encountered elsewhere.

After a day-long safari, there is no shortage of incredible accommodation options with tented camps and luxury lodges, each offering incredible dining and activities including walking safaris, game drives and much more.

Phinda Game Reserve lion with tongue out

For a South African safari , visitors to the park are for a treat as Phinda is a fully enclosed game reserve. This makes sightings of all flagship species including the Big Five and cheetah very easy.

Both black and white rhino are present and regularly spotted, although the black rhino less often. The beautiful nyala is the most common antelope. Night drives offer an opportunity to see nocturnal species such as porcupine and genet.

Phinda certainly is special in the way that you can see lions and elephants in the morning and can go diving with Whale Sharks in the afternoon.

The reserve is also famous for its quality cheetah sightings. Smaller creatures to look out for are the shy red duiker found scurrying around in the forest undergrowth and, the smallest of all antelope, the tiny suni. A boat trip on the Mzinene River offers close encounters with big Nile crocodiles.

Phinda Game Reserve rhinos

With more than 400 species recorded, Phinda is an excellent birding destination. Migratory birds are present from November to April. A patch of rare sand forest habitat is home to many Zululand specials such as Narina trogon, African broadbill, green twinspot, pink-throated twinspot and Neergaards sunbird.

These species are all seen quite easily in the grounds of Forest Lodge, a favorite with birders. Walking safaris and a boat trip on the river can add lots of extra sightings onto your list.

Other notable birds include the African green pigeon, African swamphen and the Great white pelican.

Phinda is home to rare sand forest, which is home to important endemic plant species, as well as some of South Africa’s rarest animals. Of the remaining 2 000 hectares of sand forest that is being protected in the world, Phinda is home to 520 hectares.

In order to limit damage to this precious area from elephants, an elephant exclusion fence was erected around the largest section of sand forest on the reserve in 2005. One of the first of its kind, other reserves are now utilizing the same method to protect vegetation types that are at risk.

In the evenings, when warm firelight welcomes you to the traditional African boma, wide-eyed bush babies watch inquisitively from the trees above, as guests indulge in a lantern-lit feast beneath a canvas of stars.

Phinda is home to 6 superb lodges, each with its own charm and character. The Phinda Mountain Lodge offers uninterrupted mountain views and natural light streaming through expansive glass windows to each of the suites.

Each accommodation option features an outdoor shower, well-stocked personal bars and private plunge pools. In the main area, guests can swap safari stories around the inviting bar and enjoy meals in the interactive kitchen, complete with a pizza oven (ideal fun for the kids to create their own dinner).

Lodges will typically have all meals and drinks included in the lodge package.

Useful information

Phinda Game Reserve occupies a large part on the eastern seaboard of South Africa in an area known as the KwaZulu-Natal, a region known for its beaches, mountains and savannah.

Safaris here are often combined with trips to Kruger National Park , Sabi Sand Game Reserve or Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park .

Phinda Game Reserve, being in the southern hemisphere, has a winter and summer which occur at opposite times as in Europe and North America.

Winter is from May to September and summer from October to April. Phinda’s climate is subtropical and the Wet season occurs during the hot and humid summer months. Winters are dry and characterized by cool nights and pleasantly warm days.

Dry season (May to September)

Although occasional showers can occur due to the coastal proximity of the park, there is very little rain during the winter. The heat is more bearable than during summer time, and the skies are sunny and clear.

As average temperatures cool in May to 14°C/57°F in the morning and 26°C/79°F in the afternoon, the summer comes to an end. Rains decrease, along with the humidity.

Best time to go

Understanding the best time to visit South Africa is important as this will impact accommodation, flight prices, availability and the weather that visitors can expect on their safari vacation. A South Africa visa for entry may also be required.

Phinda safaris offers great wildlife viewing throughout the year, but the best months are during winter (May to September). During this time, animals are more easily spotted while they convene at permanent water sources, and the dry conditions cause the bush to recede.

During the wet summer months, heavy rain can make off-road driving limited which can have an impact on animal sightings.

Phinda is located in a low-risk zone, and antimalarials are not considered necessary. It is still wise nonetheless to cover up and use mosquito repellent (those containing DEET are most effective) in the evenings during those wet months.

Antimalarials and other vaccinations for South Africa are advised, as well as covering up in the evening and using mosquito repellent (those containing DEET are most effective). There is a very small risk of contracting malaria in the wet summer months from September to May in parts of South Africa.

It is recommended to visit a travel clinic before coming to South Africa. Several South Africa vaccinations are recommended and usually administered before your departure.

Where is Phinda Game Reserve located?

Phinda Private Game Reserve is located in KwaZulu-Natal in east South Africa. The reserve can be accessed by flying with SA Airlink, which operates daily scheduled flights directly from Johannesburg or Cape Town to Phinda‘s private airstrip.

What animals will visitors see at Phinda Game Reserve?

Visitors to Phinda Game Reserve will see the Big Five including the lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and African buffalo as well as nyalas, porcupines, genets, red duikers, antelopes, small suni antelopes and Nile crocodiles.

Safari Paradise in KwaZulu-Natal

Why Visit the Phinda Private Game Reserve?

A million years ago, the sea was cupped by dunes and lapped at a shore nearby. It has since retreated, leaving a unique forest populated by monkeys, side-striped jackal, Tongaland squirrel, pink-throated twinspots and the rare Neergaard's Sunbird in its wake. In northern KwaZulu-Natal and bordering on the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, it is here that Phinda Game Reserve resides.

Encompassing no less than seven distinct habitats, the reserve shelters an abundance of wildlife, including Africa's Big 5 and more than 380 bird species. White rhino wallow near watering holes while herds of elephant and buffalo trudge across the plains. Predatory cats lounge in the shade or stalk browsing nyala and impala. Experience the thrill of tracking these animals on foot as your Zulu trackers point out interesting indigenous trees and shrubs.

Explore nearby Sodwana Bay's reefs with over 1,200 species of colourful fish populating the warm waters along with spectacular coral formations. Engage with the playful bottlenose dolphin, swim with the flat-mouthed whale shark, and watch the mighty humpback whale move along its migratory paths. The area is in a malaria zone, and visitors should take the necessary precautions.

We've taken the liberty to answer everything you may need to know about visiting Phinda Private Game Reserve

The easiest and most convenient way to visit Phinda is by air. Daily scheduled flights fly from either Johannesburg or Cape Town into Durban's King Shaka International Airport. From here, it's a stunning three-hour drive or road transfer to the lodge. You will drive alongside fields of sugarcane which thrives in the humid and warm climate, with glimpses of the coast as you make your way along the renowned Dolphin Coast towards the wetlands of St. Lucia.

If spending too much time in a vehicle is not something up your alley, there are also scheduled flights into Phinda's private airstrip. These flights can be arranged from either Cape Town or Johannesburg and may have a stop along the way, but it is definitely the most direct way to get you on safari and put a gin and tonic in your hand!

If you are up for the adventure, self-driving through the province of KwaZulu-Natal can be one of the most scenic places you will ever explore anywhere else on earth. Neighbours to Phinda include the expansive Drakensberg mountain range – which, if you are an avid hiker, is not to be missed! If you were the history buff in school, then it's going to be worth your while to visit the Battlefields Route comprising 82 battlefields. If pristine beaches with warm Indian Ocean water are what call you, this is the ultimate bush and beach combination for you. And when you are in control of the wheel, you are in control of your experience!

Yes! At most of the lodges, except for Rock Lodge, children of all ages are welcome at Phinda. Not only are mom and dad able to have a world-class safari experience, but your little ones are also able to soak up the nature and learn all about Africa’s animals – first-hand!

When you visit Phinda with your family, children from the age of three years will automatically be gifted a special WILDchild backpack filled with all kinds of goodies which will correlate to their age – so make sure you tell one of our Rhino Consultants when enquiring. The lodges are all equipped with excellent staff to keep your kids entertained and engaged, including activities such as baking with the chef, bark rubbing, bug collecting, frog safaris ‘poo walks’ – which is much more fascinating than it sounds and shares some secret tracking tips for wildlife.

The best part? All children can join game drives at the ranger’s discretion! Walking safaris are only permitted for children over the age of 16 years, which excludes specialist walks. There has to be something special for just the adults, right? Overall, Phinda Private Game Reserve is the perfect location for the whole family to have a memorable time on safari!

South Africa is known for being a diverse country, not only for its people and cultures but also for its diversity between the different regions throughout the year. The seasons remain constant, but some parts experience cold, wet winters while other areas have dry, warmer winters. In contrast, where some regions experience hot, sunny summers, other areas experience frequent summer thunderstorms – a sight to see!

If you're visiting South Africa for a diverse holiday combining some time in Cape Town along with your safari, or perhaps opting for a safari and beach combination, knowing the best times of the year to travel is important.

Typically, the South African winter falls between June and August, and the summer takes centre stage between December and February. Sub-tropical KwaZulu-Natal, home to Phinda Private Game Reserve, also covers a diverse range of temperatures, but wildlife shine when it's winter and the bush is dry and not as lush as after the annual rainfall the bush is green and thick. For your best chances of seeing wildlife at Phinda, aim to travel between July and September, touching on the cusp of the end of autumn, a dry winter, and the beginning of spring.

Then again, if you're one to escape the crowds, then travelling to Phinda during the low season (the summer months) will gift you the reserve in an Eden-like state with the new green shoots and trees pushing through, as well as the young wildlife emerging as this is the birthing season! Not to mention that travelling in the green season is the best light of the year for photography – so grab your cameras and start your adventure!

We will try to make this decision easy for you, but it's not a terrible decision to have to make.

You can book Phinda Homestead for exclusive use, so imagine your own private home in the middle of the African bush. Not to mention that you get a private chef, butler, ranger and tracker! This is the ultimate multi-generational family getaway which can accommodate up to eight adults and four additional children.

Phinda Zuka Lodge is another option to book on an exclusive basis for your group or family. Where Homestead is your home in the bush, Zuke is your own private lodge! This is the ideal accommodation for a group of friends or extended family, with a separate main area away from the 4 suites.

A firm favourite is Phinda Vlei Lodge . There are 6 suites, each overlooking a wonderland-like sand forest and wetland. Book yourself an in-room treatment by candlelight and melt into the African wilderness.

Still haven’t made up your mind about which lodge to choose? Phinda Forest Lodge might just enchant you! Tucked away under the intimate canopy of trees, you’ll never want to leave your private glasshouse amplifying the natural elements surrounding you.

The ultimate family lodge, however not for exclusive use, Phinda Mountain Lodge , is located on a hilltop, providing expansive views across the African bush below. The largest out of all of the lodges, Phinda Mountain Lodge can accommodate families in cottages or a family designed suite (triple rooms are also an option). With a swimming pool like this lodge has, your kids might even grow gills while on holiday.

And finally, Phinda Rock Lodge , which is the only lodge not to accommodate children under the age of 12 years. Calling all honeymooners looking for the ultimate romantic getaway! Take a dip in your private plunge pool and soak in the wilderness views before dining under an African night sky on the lodge’s rooftop terrace.

Take your pick! Phinda Private Game Reserve can be seen as the pinnacle of private reserves when it comes to memorable bucket list experiences and activities.

While staying at Phinda, in addition to the included twice-daily game drives through the private reserve, guests also have the option of booking a walking safari. Here you will track the endangered black rhino or towering African elephant on foot or go off searching for the rare pangolin with a resident researcher – all of which are conservation-based activities that you will be directly supporting while having an experience of a lifetime.

If you prefer to get more involved in the local community and support the locals, a visit to the African Foundation Community is right up your alley. Education and awareness will help prolong Africa’s wildlife and beautiful biodiversity, and what better way to spread this knowledge than from a young age? On this visit, you will experience the projects in the Mduku and Mnqobokazi communities, including the Khulani Special School, the Mduku Clinic, and the Mbhedula Craft Market.

And if you’re itching for some salty water, then a visit to the nearby Sodwana Bay is easily accessible! Activities like scuba diving and snorkelling can be arranged, as well as a beach picnic adventure along the Maputaland coastline.

KwaZulu-Natal is virtually malaria-free, but we cannot say that it's entirely malaria-free. There are still some spots where there is a low risk of contracting malaria (mainly during the wetter, rainy months). Cases are usually more north, closer to the Mozambique border, where there is a higher risk of malaria.

If you come prepared, you could easily avoid infection. We always recommend that you reach out to your doctor about malaria prevention before travelling to a malaria area, as we are not doctors. Therefore, this information should not replace that issued by your doctor.

The area you will be travelling to might be a low-risk malaria area, though we still recommend you take precautions. Malaria medications are not what they used to be, and there are many new advancements as far as prophylactics go. Malanil and Malarone are great options, but again discuss your options with your doctor. If you go to your local doctor or travel clinic and ask for one of these, they are freely available in most places.

They are a one-a-day tablet, and you start taking them a day before you enter the infected area, daily while you are there, and then for seven days afterwards. It is as easy as popping a daily vitamin pill. There are zero side effects for most people, and it will not prevent you from enjoying your trip. It is always best to consult your doctor, as you may have underlying conditions which would affect which medications you will need for this trip.

WildEarth welcomes &Beyond’s Phinda Private Game Reserve

Once again, we are bringing you some very exciting news. WE are adding a new location to the three from which WE currently broadcast into our daily LIVE shows. Again we have partnered with luxury travel experts &Beyond to share another of their exclusive properties with the world. This time it is Phinda Private Game Reserve and they will be included in our broadcasts from Sunday morning, May 31st.

Phinda Private Game Reserve is 28,555 hectares (70,560 acres) of protected wildlife land in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Showcasing one of the continent’s finest game viewing experiences, &Beyond Phinda is home to a magnificent variety of wildlife, including the Big Five, but is best known for its large population of cheetah and black rhino. The sand forest is home to the shy suni and the rare red duiker, two tiny antelope that are seldom encountered elsewhere.

The landscape is particularly diverse with seven distinct habitats found on the property. There is woodland, grassland, wetland and forest, interspersed with mountain ranges, rivers, marshes and pans. It is absolutely stunning.

Pangolin Rehabilitation and Research

phinda safari guides

Once the traumatised pangolins’ health is more stable, they are placed into the release programme at &Beyond Phinda where they are carefully monitored. The aim is to help re-establish a new and healthy population of Temminck’s ground pangolin, provide a breeding nucleus from which to create further metapopulations and give this vulnerable species a fighting chance at survival. It seems only fitting that this once naturally occurring species will be returned to the pristine and highly protected wilderness of &Beyond Phinda. Phinda, which means “the return” in Zulu, has proved prophetic in more ways than one.

Back in 1991, this previously derelict farmland was devoid of its original wildlife and not only did &Beyond restore the land to its original splendour, but they also succeeded in reintroducing the wildlife that once rightfully belonged on that land. &Beyond Phinda was one of the first private or state-owned reserves to successfully reintroduce lion, cheetah, elephant and buffalo, as well as smaller species such as serval, klipspringer, rock hyrax and caracal. Years later, a significant portion of the land was returned to its ancestral owners, the neighbouring Makhasa and Mnqobokazi communities. And now, after a prolonged absence, the Temminck’s ground pangolin also makes its long-awaited return. Photo © Liam Bascombe

Rhino Conservation Programme

WildEarth and &Beyond have decided to show rhinos on Phinda during the LIVE shows. The stringent security measures that &Beyond have put in place mean that poaching risks are extremely low.

Meet the Characters

As with all the places that feature on our daily LIVE shows, &Beyond Phinda has its own characters that the guides will check in on regularly. Here are a few for you to look out for:-

Mountain Pride – This pride lives in the mountainous woodlands near to Phinda Mountain Lodge. They are led by an elderly lioness who is around ten years old. She and her grownup daughter face a constant challenge of having to keep their four sub-adult offspring who, at one and a half years old, have an insatiable appetite but are still too young to help with the hunting.

phinda safari guides

Bayala Pride – this pride lives in the open rolling grasslands of the far South of the reserve. The three lionesses are sisters, and between 2 of them, they have five youngsters who are all around a year old. They face a constant challenge of having to keep their youngsters fed and seem to enjoy climbing marula trees from which to scan their territory for prey. The 3rd lioness is currently also spending a lot of time away from her pride; it is possible that she is pregnant and looking for a den site. Photo © Clive Cowie

Bayala males – 2 magnificent brothers in the prime of their life. Both sport long, black manes but one of the brothers (the slightly more dominant one) has a big scar through his right eye – a mark from a fight. They preside over both the Mountain and the Bayala Prides and constantly move around the southern regions of the reserve patrolling their territory.

phinda safari guides

So uth Male Cheetah – 2 big but ageing brothers. Their territory encompasses more than half of the whole of the reserve, and they are always on the move patrolling to keep other males out and to search for any female cheetah that is ready to mate. Their constant walking means that they must feed relatively often and together they have been known to take down wildebeest, young zebras and even, on one occasion, a baby giraffe.

Bayala Male cheetah – 2 brothers who were orphaned at a very young age, so young in fact that it was doubtful that they would survive to adulthood. Yet here they are today establishing a territory for themselves in the West of the reserve. Together they survived an attack by lions (in which their mother was killed) and several run-ins with the much larger, more aggressive South Male cheetah.

Mother cheetah and her two cubs – a beautiful female cheetah with two cubs estimated to be a little over three months old. She keeps her offspring in the long grass of the open woodlands of the West of the reserve and faces the constant challenge of having to keep them fed but also safe from lions, leopards and hyenas.

Meet the Guides

There will be three guides rotating at Phinda Private Game Reserve:-

Damen Pheiffer

For as long as Damen can remember, he has been fanatical about wildlife. To the extent, he admits, that he could imitate animal noises before he could even talk. Damen recalls spending every holiday and long weekend either in the bush or at the beach. In 2017, Damen obtained a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science from Louisiana State University in the USA.

Following graduation, he worked as a research associate for the University’s Renewable Natural Resources department studying the blue crab and shrimp fisheries of southern Louisiana.

Interestingly, during Damen’s time abroad, he would often tune into live safari broadcasts to get his much-needed Africa fix before his eventual return to African soil in 2018 where he immediately returned to Phinda to qualify as a guide and has since been based at all of Phinda’s six lodges.

phinda safari guides

Clive was born and raised in Pietermaritzburg in South Africa’s picturesque Midlands. Growing up in such close proximity to some of the country’s most prized wilderness areas, Clive developed a lifelong love for the great outdoors and its varied wildlife and birdlife.

After dedicating eight years to working in sales, the lure of the wilderness became too strong, and Clive eventually decided to follow his heart in 2016 and train to be a Ranger at Phinda and has been guiding there ever since. Clive is an avid outdoorsman, and when he’s not guiding, he’s off exploring the rugged beauty of South Africa. From hiking, mountain biking and trail running, to birding and camping, he truly is happiest when surrounded by nature.

phinda safari guides

Jarryd grew up in the coastal town of Plettenberg Bay in South Africa. However, despite his obvious love of the ocean, it was the bushveld that became his biggest passion. Jarryd went on to study at Nelson Mandela University in Port Elizabeth, earning qualifications in both Electrical Engineering and Education (majoring in High School Mathematics). Despite these technical credentials, Jarryd decided to pursue his lifelong dream of living and working in Africa’s wilderness.

In 2013 he joined &Beyond, and after five years as the Assistant Head Ranger for their lodges in the Sabi Sand, Jarryd’s passion for hands-on conservation work encouraged him to return to Phinda, where he assumed his current role of Head Ranger for the south of the reserve.

WildEarth is incredibly excited to be adding another &Beyond Reserve to our LIVE shows and look forward to a long and exciting journey broadcasting from Phinda.

Phinda Private Reserve

Phinda Private Reserve

  • Phinda Game Reserve

Location: KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa No of rooms: Phinda Forest Lodge: 16 Suites. Phinda Mountain Lodge: 25 Suites. Phinda Rock Lodge: Six Suites. Phinda Vlei Lodge: Six Suites. Phinda Zzuka Lodge: Four Suites. The Homestead: Four Suites One Stop Reason to Go: The Big Five – lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino – are almost guaranteed here!

Phinda Private Game Reserve showcases one of South Africa’s finest gaming experiences, including Africa’s Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino), the endangered black rhino and over 400 bird species in an impressive 23 000 hectares (56 800 acres) of prime wilderness land in KwaZulu-Natal.

Phinda is described as the “Seven Worlds of Wonder”, with its seven distinct habitats – a magnificent tapestry of woodland, grassland, wetland and forest, interspersed with mountain ranges, river courses, marshes and pans waiting to be discovered as well as being home to 1 000 hectares of Africa’s remaining rare dry sand forest. Situated within close proximity of the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, Phinda is also located within easy reach of the iSimangaliso/Greater St Lucia Wetland Park, a lush conservation area that has earned World Heritage Site status. With unspoiled beaches and spectacular reefs nearby, and an abundance of wildlife, Phinda offers guests the perfect bush and beach adventure.

Phinda is made up of six equally unique lodges that have been designed to complement the different habitats perfectly. Forest Lodge enjoys the dappled shade deep in the heart of a rare, dry sand forest, while Mountain Lodge boasts remarkable views out over the Reserve. Vlei Lodge, on the edge of the forest, overlooks the vast wetland, and Rock Lodge sits suspended over a deep valley below.

Phinda is also home to two sole-use safari villas, Zuka Lodge and The Homestead. Luxurious and intimate, these villas are the perfect ‘home away from home’ for families or small groups of friends sharing a safari together.

Phinda Forest Lodge: Set deep in the heart of a rare and beautiful dry sand forest, Phinda’s Forest Lodge is a mass of exquisite contradiction. Floor-to-ceiling glass walls invite the forest inside, while the dense tree canopy shelters and provides privacy. Floating on stilts above the forest floor while tiny duiker graze below, 16 Zulu Zen suites blend into the dappled shade.

Phinda Mountain Lodge: Wraparound views of the ancient Ubombo Mountain range, this one of Phinda’s lodge’s balances majestically above its beautiful surroundings. The 25 suites scattered along the mountainside offer complete privacy and luxury.

Phinda Rock Lodge: Carved into the rocky mountainside facing spectacular Leopard Rock, Phinda’s Rock Lodge offers complete seclusion, suspended in air over the deep valley below. Six stone and adobe suites burrow into the heart of the cliffside, with solid wooden shutters and doors opening up onto a private viewing deck and plunge pool balanced on the very edge of a breathtaking precipice.

Phinda Vlei Lodge: At the edge of the Reserve’s unique wetland or vlei system at the edge of the sand forest, Phinda’s Vlei Lodge offers an intimate safari experience, with elegant and gracious spaces designed for quiet contemplation of the African wilderness. The six elegant thatched suites look out onto an ever-changing parade of animals on the open vlei.

Phinda Zuka Lodge: Cradled in a valley and surrounded by densely wooded hills studded with aloes, sole-use Zuka Lodge embodies cool, coastal bush style. Four thatched en-suite cottages cluster around a central guest area with an open, interactive kitchen, a large wooden dining table for friends and family, and a cosy fireplace for evening gatherings.

The Homestead: In this exclusive private safari villa, the beauty of Africa’s wide open spaces is brought right indoors. Large sliding doors in four luxurious suites let in breathtaking vistas. Personal touches and the warmth of a dedicated team of staff, including a private ranger, tracker, butler and chef, bring renowned African hospitality to life.

Phinda is home to an abundance of wildlife, from the largest mammals to the smallest antelope. However, it is the faster of predators that has a special place here. Having reintroduced cheetah to the area after an absence of over 50 years, Phinda has quickly established a reputation as one of the best places to view and photograph these rare cats. Along with cheetah, lion and leopard are tracked on the reserve on a daily basis and guests have a high likelihood of encountering these magnificent animals.

Another success story at Phinda is that of both the white and the more endangered black rhino. Brought back from the brink of extinction, both the grass-eating white rhino and the shrub-grazing black rhino are thriving at Phinda.

The elegant nyala antelope is a frequent sight, with the Reserve boasting one of the highest densities of the species. With its dark brown coat, yellow legs, shaggy mane and bushy tail, the male nyala is particularly spectacular, while the female contents itself with a less flashy chestnut coat. The rare sand forest in the northern parts of Phinda is the perfect environment for some of the rarer smaller species. The shy red duiker is found grazing on fallen leaves and fruit and the tiny suni, one of the smallest antelope species, may also be seen.

The Phinda Private Game Reserve is one of the best examples of its kind in Africa – a place where dreams come true.

Apple Releases Safari Technology Preview 190 With Bug Fixes and Performance Improvements

Apple today released a new update for Safari Technology Preview , the experimental browser Apple first introduced in March 2016. Apple designed the ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ to test features that may be introduced into future release versions of Safari.

Safari Technology Preview Feature

The current ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ release is compatible with machines running macOS Ventura and macOS Sonoma , the latest version of macOS that Apple released in September 2023.

The ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ update is available through the Software Update mechanism in System Preferences or System Settings to anyone who has downloaded the browser . Full release notes for the update are available on the Safari Technology Preview website .

Apple's aim with ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ is to gather feedback from developers and users on its browser development process. ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ can run side-by-side with the existing Safari browser and while designed for developers, it does not require a developer account to download.

Customer

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Tours to Moscow

Our Moscow tours are land only meaning that you arrange your own air travel to Russia and our expert staff meets you at the airport and handles everything else from there. Our online Airline Ticket booking system offers some of the most competitive rates to Russia available on the web so if you need tickets, please visit our Russian air ticket center . Rest assured that you will be taken great care of on one of our Moscow tours. Express to Russia has a fully staffed office in Moscow that will help to make your visit fun, informative and unforgettable. Please remember that of all these tours are private and can be adjusted to your taste. You can add, replace or skip some sights; you can add more days to the package or cut the tour short. Our specialists will be glad to help you create the tour of your dreams!

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Kremlin in the times of Ivan III

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you.
