Track travel, storm conditions as winter blast barrels toward Minnesota
Another winter storm is heading for the Upper Midwest , poised to bring snow, wind and possibly blizzard conditions to much of Minnesota later this week along with bitterly cold temperatures — just in time to mess with holiday travel plans.
The National Weather Service said travel across Minnesota later this week could be “impossible and life-threatening” as the storm is forecast to drop more than 6 inches of snow in some locations Wednesday into Thursday, followed by winds gusting in excess of 50 mph that will create dangerous wind chills and possibly whiteout conditions Thursday and Friday.
Here’s how to keep tabs on forecasts, travel conditions and flight updates over the next few days.

Powerful storm brings heavy rain and snow to Central Plains and Midwest, making travel 'almost impossible'
A powerful storm brought heavy winds, snow and rain to the central United States on Monday, making travel hazardous and "nearly impossible" in some areas, with extreme weather on both coasts set to last into Tuesday.
The National Weather Service said early Monday that the Northern and Central Plains into the Upper Midwest would be affected, with sleet and freezing rain reaching as far as the Mississippi Valley.
Minnesota could see snowfall of 6 to 12 inches an hour, bringing travel chaos to the Twin Cities.
A 51-year-old woman died Sunday in Burnsville, 15 miles south of Minneapolis, after her vehicle ran off the road and struck a tree, police said.
Minnesota State Patrol named her as Elizabeth Evans of Lakeville and said she was driving north on Interstate 35E approaching County Road 42 at the time of the accident, NBC News affiliate station KARE 11 reported .
The state patrol said there had been at least 328 crashes reported as of 9:30 p.m. on Sunday, involving 13 injuries. More than 200 vehicles spun out or slid off roads, while 10 semi-trailers jack-knifed.
Some 20 million people across the continental United States, from the West Coast to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, were subject to weather warnings Sunday.
California was rocked by a spring storm on Sunday, with hailstones the size of quarters and winds as strong as 60 mph, the NWS said. Lake Tahoe received about a foot of snow, potentially a boost for ski resorts — although several were forced to close ski lifts on Saturday after recording wind gusts measuring more than 90 mph.
Dramatic video captured the moment the L.A. Fire Department rescued a 35-year-old woman from the Los Angeles River, fast-moving and swollen from the storm waters. She was picked out of the rapids by a firefighter lowered by a rescue helicopter. She was taken to a hospital with only minor injuries and hypothermia, the fire department said.
Hundreds of traffic accidents across the Northeast were reported to police overnight as icy conditions took hold.
Over the weekend a powerful weather system battered the tri-state area , with more than 2 feet of snow and downed power lines in some parts. Vermont saw as much as 30 inches of snow, the weather service said.
More than 100,000 customers were still without power in Maine, along with 22,000 in New Hampshire and 12,000 in New York, as of 6:30 a.m. ET Monday, according to PowerOutage.us, which tracks energy connections.
Central Maine Power, the state’s largest utility, said in a statement early Monday that it had returned power to half the 200,000 customers affected by the storm, after responding to some 775 emergency calls.

How much snow will Minnesota get on Sunday? Here's what we know
By Adam Del Rosso , Mike Augustyniak , Katie Steiner
Updated on: March 25, 2024 / 6:27 AM CDT / CBS Minnesota
MINNEAPOLIS — A major storm is making its way through Minnesota, and by the time it wraps up, much of the state will see half a foot of snow or more.
MONDAY'S UPDATE: A look at snow totals for Minneapolis, across the state
A winter storm warning will be in effect for the Twin Cities through 4 a.m. Monday. Much of the rest of the state will be under a similar warning. Sunday through Tuesday will be NEXT Weather Alert days.
Greatest snowstorm impacts
The heaviest rounds will fall through the evening Sunday. There will be widespread travel issues after 8 p.m., NEXT Weather Meteorologists say.
At times, the snowfall rates could reach 1-to-2 inches per hour, with gusts up to 40 mph. The snow will be heavy and wet, making it difficult to shovel.
At 7 p.m., the National Weather Service says it measured three inches of snow at MSP Airport.
MORE: Minnesotans are preparing physically and financially for the big weekend snowfall
By midnight Sunday, NEXT Weather Meteorologists say that the metro area could see between 6 and 10 inches of snow. Areas to the north and west — like Marshall, Alexandria and Brainerd — could see more than a foot. The North Shore will be under a blizzard warning.
Some warm air will move in along Interstate 90 from Sunday into Monday, which will turn the snow into rain. That rain could cut back on some of the snow totals in the southeast. The warm nose of air isn't expected to hit the northern and western parts of the state however, meaning that snow totals there could continue to climb into Monday evening.
The timing and movement of the warm air is still uncertain, so it's difficult to determine where and when, precisely, the snow will turn into rain.
The rain will change back into snow Monday night and taper off through Tuesday.
A high pressure system returns Wednesday, making for much calmer weather on Wednesday through Friday.
Travel impacts
If you need to get out of the house on Sunday, it's best to do it as soon as possible.
"One of the greatest impacts from this storm is going to be with travel, given the fact that we're going to have the snow and the wind," NEXT Weather Meteorologist Adam Del Rosso said. "And those impacts are only going to grow as we head into the afternoon and evening."
Travel impact from the storm will be moderate through the afternoon and early evening in the Twin Cities. Starting around 8 p.m., impact will be high.
Minnesota Department of Transportation spokesperson Anne Meyer said about 800 snowplows are at the ready statewide, 200 of them in the metro. There are twice as many drivers to keep the plows going day and night.
"Already hard at work out there, a lot of crews already taking and dealing with the amount of snow we're seeing so far," Meyer said. "We're going to see a lot happening out there, it's changing by the hour and we want drivers to be ready for those changes as well."
As of 8:30 p.m. Sunday, there were 36 active crashes around the metro, according to MnDOT.

You see, Voyageurs consists of 500 islands, 655 miles of shoreline, and more than 200,000 acres of land and water, most of which are only accessible by boat.

2. Explore the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness
Accessible primarily by canoe, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA) in Northern Minnesota is one of America’s most beautiful and remote adventures making it a Minnesota bucket list highlight!
BWCA is a backpacker’s paradise in that it is home to over 2,000 lakes connected by rivers and portages that are only accessible to paddlers.

What started as a small indoor water park hotel in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, Great Wolf Lodge now features a line of family resorts each complete with a water park, restaurants, arcades, spas, and children’s activities.

The historic and world-famous Mayo Clinic is located in Rochester, Minnesota, which is 75 miles south of the Twin Cities of Minneapolis/St. Paul.
Rochester has long been rated as one of the best places to live in the United States by multiple publications such as Money Magazine .
This is due in part to the presence of its world-class medical facility, Mayo Clinic.
On August 21st, 1883, The Great Tornado demolished much of Rochester and there was no medical facility in the immediate area at the time.
Local doctors Will and Charlie Mayo worked together to care for the wounded as well as pioneered several lifesaving medical techniques.
The Mayo practice grew tremendously and is now one of the largest and most well-respected medical facilities in the world.
Many notable people from around the world, including several former U.S. Presidents, have visited Rochester as patients of the Mayo Clinic. International patients include King Hussein of Jordan.
Along with multiple other memorable things to do in Rochester, MN , visiting or admiring the grounds of the Mayo Clinic is one of them!
Mayo Clinic offers free guided art, audio, and historical tours for patients and their guests while they are at Mayo.
The general public can tour Mayowood, Assissi Heights, the Plummer House, and W.W Mayo House, all of which are important landmarks in the history of the Mayo Clinic.
11. Visit Forestville and Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park
Forestville and Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park is located in Preston, MN which is located 37 miles south of Rochester, MN.
Historic Forestville is a restored 1800s village operated by the Minnesota Historical Society. They offer guided tours that allow visitors to connect with historical figures and experience what life was like at the turn of the 20th century.
Tours begin at the Forestville visitor center and travel through the garden, kitchen, Meighen family house and offices, and general store filled with original 19th-century artifacts and merchandise.
Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park surrounds Historic Forestville. This park features tours of Mystery Cave, tent and camper cabin camping, horseback riding and a horse camp, hiking trails, and trout fishing.
As Minnesota’s longest and most popular cave, Mystery Cave tours are complete with views of stalactites, stalagmites, flowstone, beautiful underground pools, and a maze of interconnecting passages.
Parks naturalists lead your tour through various portions of the cave and explain its history, its features, and how it was formed. Modern lighting and walkways enhance accessible tours.
Due to its uniqueness, beauty, and overall appeal, we have included Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park on this Minnesota Bucket List! Plus, who knew that Minnesota has caves?
13. Wheel through Winona
Another one of the best places to visit in Minnesota is the city of Winona!
Located in Southeast Minnesota, Winona is nestled in the scenic bluff country located along the Mississippi River.
Known for its picturesque vistas, multiple parks, and historic sites, the city is highlighted by an extraordinary history.
Winona’s downtown features 11 monumental blocks devoted to its architectural distinction from stone and stained glass masterpieces to remarkable basilica structures.
Some of the best things to do Winona are driving, hiking, or biking to the top of Gavin Heights overlook, walking or biking around Lake Park, and hiking on the trails up the front side of Sugar Loaf bluff.
If you happen to be in the area, I also recommend visiting Wabasha, MN which is located 30 miles north of Winona.
Wabasha is a beautiful lakside community on the Mississippi River and is home to the world-famous National Eagle Center.

We love Split Rock too! One of these days I’d like to drive the entire North Shore with our kids. There are so many amazing things to see up there!
We are hoping to go to Voyageurs this summer. We love National Parks and since we also live in the Midwest, Voyageurs is high on our wishlist.
That’s awesome! Look into renting a houseboat if you can! It is an experience like no other!
I’ve actually never been to Minnesota (even though I grew up in the Midwest – Iowa). All of these are certainly reminding how much I’m missing out on exploring a new state. I’ll add these to my list!
Where did you grow up in Iowa? My husband is from Sioux Center, IA and went to college in Sioux City, IA 🙂
One of my best friend lives in Minneapolis, so I Have been to Minnesota several times. They. have a family cabin up in Mille Laccs (not sure if that is spelled right) I bet some of these outdoor venues would be a good escape during our current social distancing. MN is such a huge state, so diverse. I should write a post about my state (NY) because we have alot of stuff to do and such different areas!
Yes! I never thoughts it’d be so fun to write about my home state, being that ‘traveling’ usually finds up leaving the state. Reflecting back however, we have done a loved so much here! I’d love to hear about your home state!!

At least six people are presumed dead following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday morning, officials said.
The bridge fell into the Patapsco River after it was struck by a nearly 1,000-foot-long container ship, sending several people plunging into the frigid waters below.
During a news update Tuesday evening, the U.S. Coast Guard told reporters they are ending an active search and rescue operation for the six people left unaccounted for at 7:30 p.m. local time.
Rear Adm. Shannon Gilreath said that based on the length of time since the bridge collapsed and the water temperatures, they don't believe that search teams are going to find any of these individuals still alive.

Gilreath told reporters that the Coast Guard is not leaving, but is going to "transition to a different phase."
The recovery phase will begin at 6 a.m. local time Wednesday when divers will begin searching for remains of all missing victims , Gilreath said.
Col. Roland L. Butler, Jr., Secretary of Maryland State Police, told reporters the conditions have changed and made it dangerous for first responders and divers to be in the water.
He emphasized that police will still have surface ships out in the water overnight.
"We're hoping to put those divers in the water and begin a more detailed search to do our very best to recover those six missing people," Butler said.
The collision set off a rapid search-and-rescue operation. Eight people from a construction crew that was working to repair potholes on the bridge are thought to have fallen into the water, Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld told reporters.
Authorities did not believe any drivers were submerged in their cars, Wiedefeld said.

The bridge, which is part of Interstate 695, collapsed around 1:30 a.m. when it was struck by a massive cargo vessel named the Dali. Dramatic video of the collision shows the hulking ship–the length of more than three football fields– slamming into one of the bridge's pillars, and then an expanse of the bridge falling into the water instantly.
The Dali, a Singapore-flagged ship, had left Baltimore at 1 a.m. and was bound for Colombo, Sri Lanka, according to Marine Traffic , a maritime data site.

Synergy Marine Group, the company that manages the ship, said in a statement that all 22 crew members are accounted for and that there were no injuries resulting from the crash. The company also said there was no pollution to the water.
In a briefing for the media, Moore said the crew of the container ship had notified authorities about a power outage onboard shortly before the collision. The crew notified authorities of "a power issue," Moore said, confirming earlier reports that they had lost power on the ship.
The ship was traveling at approximately 8 knots when it hit the bridge, Moore said. In the immediate aftermath of the collision, officials feared motorists might be submerged in the river, but Moore said that a mayday signal was issued with enough time for authorities to stop the flow of traffic coming over the bridge.

"I have to say I'm thankful for the folks who once the warning came up, and once notification came up that there was a mayday, who literally by being able to stop cars from coming over the bridge, these people are heroes. They saved lives," Moore said.
FBI and state officials said the preliminary investigation points to an accident and that there was no credible evidence of any terrorist attack. Moore said the Francis Scott Key Bridge was fully up to code and there was no structural issue with the bridge.
"In fact, the bridge was actually fully up to code," Moore said.
The ship has had at least one previous accident
Vessel traffic in and out of the Port of Baltimore, one of the busiest on the East Coast, was suspended "until further notice," port officials announced, as search-and-rescue operations continued and the preliminary investigation into the crash was getting underway.
"This does not mean the Port of Baltimore is closed," port officials said in a statement. "Trucks are being processed within our marine terminals."
Gov. Moore declared a state of emergency and said his office was in close communication with Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg. The secretary was due to arrive in Baltimore to visit the crash site and receive updates on the investigation.

The National Transportation Safety Board said it will investigate what happened, announcing on X (formerly Twitter) that it was launching a "go team" to Baltimore.
Prior to the crash, the ship had completed 27 inspections, according to a database by the maritime safety site Equasis. In one inspection at a port in Chile last year, the ship was determined to have a deficiency related to "propulsion and auxiliary machinery," according to Equasis.
In 2016, an inspection found "hull damage impairing sea worthiness" after the ship hit a dock on its way out of the port of Antwerp. Video of the incident shows the stern of the ship scraping against the quay as it attempted to exit the North Sea container terminal.
The bridge is an important travel route with a deep history

The bridge's collapse leaves Baltimore and travelers along the East Coast without a vital transit corridor for the foreseeable future. The four-lane, 1.6-mile-long bridge carries some 11.3 million vehicles each year, according to state data, and is one of three ways to get through Baltimore on the interstate.
Reconstructing the bridge will be a "long-term build," Moore told reporters.
Speaking from the White House, President Biden said he intends for the federal government to "pay for the entire cost of reconstructing that bridge."
"We're gonna get it up and running again as soon as possible," Biden said. "Fifteen thousand jobs depend on that port, and we're gonna do everything we can to protect those jobs and help those workers."
The bridge isn't just a vital transportation route. It also has a special historical significance.
It opened to the public in March 1977, but its history goes much deeper than that. Scholars believe it stood within 100 yards of the site where its namesake, Francis Scott Key, witnessed the failed British bombardment of Fort McHenry in September 1814.
Key, an American lawyer, watched the battle from the British warship he had boarded to negotiate the release of a detained American civilian. The awe he felt at seeing the flag rise the next morning inspired him to write "Defense of Fort McHenry," which was later renamed "The Star-Spangled Banner" and became the U.S. national anthem in 1931.
Shippers are scrambling to re-route their cargo
Roughly $80 billion worth of cargo passes through the Port of Baltimore each year. But with the port's shipping channels now closed indefinitely due to the accident, shippers have been left scrambling to find alternate routes to transport their goods to and from the East Coast.
Some vessels have already been diverted to Norfolk, Va., Margie Shapiro, who runs a freight handling business in Baltimore, told NPR . Other traffic could be re-routed through New York or Philadelphia.
The Dali was being chartered by Maersk and carrying cargo for Maersk customers, the shipping giant said in a statement . The company said it would be omitting Baltimore from its services "until it is deemed safe for passage through this area."
Cargo already at the Port of Baltimore will have to travel overland, but truck traffic will also be snarled by the loss of the bridge.
"The whole ecosystem is going to be a little bit off," Shapiro said. "When the ecosystem gets messy, things get messy. Freight rates go up. The world gets a little bit chaotic."

It Can Take Years to Repair Bridges After a Collapse
The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge wiped out a roadway that tens of thousands of people used to travel to and from Baltimore.

The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge early on Tuesday wiped out a roadway that tens of thousands of people used to travel to and from Baltimore every day, and it is difficult to say how long it will take to rebuild.
Gov. Wes Moore of Maryland called the reconstruction a “long-term build” at a news conference on Tuesday and said that the authorities were still focused on rescuing people.
The repair time after catastrophic bridge collapses has varied over the past few decades. The episodes are difficult to compare because of differences in the structure of each bridge and the damage, and in the surrounding environment.
One of the deadliest bridge crashes in American history was at the Big Bayou Canot Bridge in Alabama in 1993. A towboat struck a rail bridge on a foggy September morning and threw the train tracks out of alignment.
Minutes later, an Amtrak passenger train derailed as it crossed the water, killing 47 people. The rebuilding efforts began within days.
In 2001, barges struck the Queen Isabella Causeway bridge that connected Port Isabel to South Padre Island in Texas, killing eight people and sending a section of the structure plummeting into a lagoon in the Gulf of Mexico. Much of the bridge remained intact after the collision, and it was repaired and reinforced in about two months .
In 2007, an Interstate 35 bridge over the Mississippi River near Minneapolis collapsed under the weight of rush hour traffic, killing 13 people. The disaster appeared to have been caused by structural issues, not a crash. That bridge was rebuilt in a little over a year .
And last year, an overpass section of Interstate 95 in Philadelphia collapsed after a fiery crash involving a tanker loaded with gasoline, killing one person. A temporary roadway opened within two weeks. In 2022, a bridge collapse over a ravine in Pittsburgh injured at least 10 people. The bridge reopened within a year.
To some experts, the catastrophe in Baltimore recalled one at the Sunshine Skyway Bridge in Florida more than 40 years ago. The bridge tumbled into the water near Tampa in 1980 after a freighter hit a support column. The collapse killed 35 people.
About seven years passed before a new bridge opened over Tampa Bay.
Any attempt to rebuild a bridge as long as the Francis Scott Key, which is 1.6 miles, would probably also be a multiyear effort, said Benjamin W. Schafer, a professor of engineering at Johns Hopkins.
“There isn’t a temporary bridge structure to be put up at those span lengths,” he said, adding that search and rescue operations would be the priority, followed by wreckage removal so that ships can pass through.
President Biden addressed the collapse in remarks on Tuesday, calling the Francis Scott Key Bridge “one of the most important elements” supporting the U.S. economy in the northeast. Mr. Biden said that he expected the federal government to pay for the “entire cost” of bridge repairs.
Katie Rogers contributed reporting.
