Explore Celebration
Have you heard of the town of Celebration in Florida? This is an amazing place for free things to do in Orlando!
Not only was this town designed originally by Disney but it is like a step back in time as they used towns from the early 1900s for their inspiration. This gives the own an amazingly unique feel and it is so fun just to walk around and check out the buildings; it was even named one of Americaâs 10 Prettiest towns!

See the ducks at the peabody hotel
What started off as a little fun for the Peabody Hotel manager to surprise the guests has become a long standing tradition at the Peabody hotel and a popular item on our list of free things to do in Orlando.
For more than 90 years the ducks at the Peabody hotel in Tennessee have been waddling from their duck palace on the rooftop, into the elevator, down to the lobby and across a red carpet to spend the day eating and swimming in the hotel fountain. So when the Peabody hotel opened in Orlando (now called the Hyatt Regency Orlando) they continued the tradition. Travelers have literally come from around the world to see these little ducks make their daily walk.
The ducks come into the lobby at 11am each day and head back to their $100,000 penthouse abode at 5pm each day. You can watch the ducks arrive or depart, visit them at the fountain during the day, and even pay a visit to their fancy living quarters. These definitely arenât your typical things to do in Orlando for free but itâs a fun trip to make.
Sands Space History Center
Located less than one hour from the Orlando international airport the Sands Space History Center is one of several fun free things to do in Orlando.
Admission to this unique museum is free and the museum is located just outside the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. Inside the museum you can learn all about the launch complexes that are at Cape Canaveral. There is also a gift shop – which obviously isnât free – where you can scout out some souvenirs for the space enthusiast in your life.
The museum itself isnât super interactive for kids but kids who are crazy about space will likely find it more interesting. However, due to the displays being more reading based this is definitely geared towards free things in Orlando for adults.
Whatâs really great about this museum is that it is nearby two amazing beaches. Both Cocoa Beach and Cape Canaveral beach are nearby and offer a full day of beach waves and sand. These would be great places to pair with a visit to the museum especially if you are traveling with children.
If you are lucky, you can time your visit to this area with a rocket launch. There is no doubt that watching a rocket launch would be incredible memorably and definitely one of the top free things to do in central florida.
Zora Neale Hurston National Museum of Fine Arts
While exploring free things to do in Orlando be sure to stop in at the Zora Neale Hurston National Museum of Fine Arts.
Named after the well known writer of the same name this small museum showcases African American artists. The staff are incredibly friendly and knowledgable and, with new exhibits rotated in frequently, you can visit several times in a year and have a new experience.
The museum also highlights the importance of the historical community that it is located within which also happens to be where Zora Neale Hurston is from. The staff at the museum are super knowledgable and so friendly and can even point you in the right direction for a self guided walking tour to learn more about the area of Eatonville and the life of Zora Neale Hurston.
Fort Christmas Historical Museum & Park
If you are looking for free things to do in Orlando that are away from the city but still give you an opportunity to learn a ton of new thing then the Fort Christmas Historical Museum and Park is a great place for you.
About 40 minutes east of Orlando, Fort Christmas is an incredible historical park that tells the Second Seminole War events. There is a fort, historical houses and a school house.
We suggest you pack a picnic and make at least a half day of your visit here. There are so many incredibly preserved artifacts in the museum portion and the grounds even have a large playground structure making this an idea place for free things to do in Orlando with kids.
The best part? You get to explore an incredible bit of nature, learn some history, and soak in that beautiful Florida sunshine for free.
And for a fun bonus, if you are traveling before Christmas time you can stop in the town of Christmas, Florida while you are there and mail off some holiday greetings with some special stamps!
Old Town, Florida
If you are looking for a little touch of vintage Florida charm then this is the place for you to put on your free things to do in Orlando itinerary.
Old Town is set up to feel like a retro Florida town and they have done a great job. Not only is the ambiance great but the weekly events list is always full of great things to do in Orlando for free. It is located near Celebration so it can be a fun add on to exploring both in a day.
If you are a car fanatic for muscles cars or classics then you are in luck because they have three separate car shows each week. They also host weekly karaoke if you are wanting to try out your vocal talent, or encourage someone else to try out theirs. Then there is also a weekly farmers market complete with live music! In addition to all that, there are amusement rides, games and restaurants that are all on theme but, of course, these things will cost.
Be sure to check out their events page before you plan your trip so you can go on a day when you can catch your favourite event!
This is definitely not your typical spot and despite what the name might make you think this is definitely one to put on your list of free things in Orlando to do with kids.
Spook Hill, located less than an hour south of Orlando, is actually a naturally occurring optical illusion of the land. There arenât many places like this in the world making it a pretty unique place on the list of free things to do in Orlando. It is also one of the most haunted places in Florida!
Basically you head to this hill and you will be instructed at one part to put your car in neutral and let the magic happen. Your car will start moving and the slope of the land makes it feel like your car is being pulled uphill even though you will be traveling downhill. Itâs almost like a big magnet is pulling you up the hill without you doing a thing.
Kids are sure to love this but, donât be fooled, adults are sure to enjoy this as well. It is so well loved that people have been visiting Spook Hill since the 1950s.
While the whole experience is an optical illusion there have been plenty of legends created about the area to try to add to itâs spookiness. So if you want to give your kids an extra spook just explain to them that a dead Floridian pirate is pushing your car up the hill (yes, that is actually one of the legends that have been perpetuated!). Or mention the great battle between the Native American chief and an alligator where both lost their lives.
Most gps should pick up the location if you search for Spook Hill near Orlando but to help you out here are the gps coordinates 27° 54Ⲡ43.35âł N, 81° 34Ⲡ56.47âł W Itâs near the aptly named Spook Hills Elementary School.
Go resort hopping at Disney

The best things you can do for free in Orlando
Feb 25, 2021 ⢠6 min read
From top museums to serene city parks, there are plenty of free things to do in Orlando Š Sean Pavone / Shutterstock
Orlando 's major amusement parks can be famously expensive. If you've squandered most of your vacation budget on tickets to see the Mouse , there's still plenty you can find in Orlando that costs absolutely nothing.
Here are the best things to do in Orlando for free.
Editor's note: during COVID-19 there are restrictions on travel and opening hours may vary. Check the latest guidance in the US before planning a trip, and always follow local health advice.
Cornell Fine Arts Museum
This tiny lakeside museum (accredited by the American Alliance of Museums) sits on the campus of Rollins College and houses US, European and Latin American art. Among the highlights are some exquisite old European Masterworks, as well as a good-sized contemporary collection. The collection is on display both here at the museum and at the nearby Alfond Inn , a college-owned boutique hotel. Both have guided tours for visitors, and the museum hosts many other events throughout the year.
Admission to the museum is free, but registration for a time slot is required for all guests.
Disney Springs
Stretching along the shore of Lake Buena Vista, the Disney Springs' smart outdoor pedestrian mall lures tourists with a huge number of restaurants, bars, music venues and shops.
This is also where you'll find the stage show Drawn to Life and the largest Disney store in the world. There's a Disney-styled party atmosphere, particularly on the weekends, with street performers dancing on stilts, parents pushing strollers loaded with Disney shopping bags, and hundreds upon hundreds of people enjoying the waterside drinking and excellent cuisine.
Although most of the restaurants and bars will have a Disney premium added to prices, the experience of soaking in the atmosphere is absolutely free.
Winter Park
When Orlandoans want to wax lyrical about how beautiful their city is, a lot of them will point you to Winter Park, a bucolic town (well, city) north of Downtown founded in the mid-19th century as a winter getaway for wealthy northerners. The town grew up around liberal-arts school Rollins College, Florida's oldest institute of higher learning. Here are some of Orlando's best-kept secrets, including the city's best art museum and some of the most talked about restaurants in town, all within a few shaded, pedestrian-friendly streets. Shops, wine bars and sidewalk cafes line Park Ave.
Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art
Internationally famous, this stunning and delightful museum houses the world's most comprehensive collection of Louis Comfort Tiffany art. Highlights include the chapel interior designed by the artist for the 1893 World's Columbian Exhibition in Chicago; 10 galleries filled with architectural and art objects from Tiffany's Long Island home, Laurelton Hall; and an installation of the Laurelton's Daffodil Terrace.
The museum is free on Fridays in November in December; admission is $6 the rest of the year.
Orlando Farmers Market
With pretty Lake Eola as its backdrop, the Orlando Farmers Market is where locals and visitors alike come to sample local produce, buy handmade jewelry and catch live entertainment at the wine and beer garden every Sunday at noon. Leashed dogs are welcome (look for vendors specializing in homemade pet treats).
Free street parking is within walking distance, and paid parking garages are nearby on South Osceola Ave and North Eola Drive.
Hannibal Square Heritage Center
As far back as 1881, Winter Park's Hannibal Square was home to African Americans employed as carpenters, farmers and household help. The Heritage Collection: Photographs and Oral Histories of West Winter Park 1900â1980 , on permanent display at this little museum, celebrates and preserves this community's culture and history.
Across the canal from the three theme parks is CityWalk, Universal's entertainment district comprising a pedestrian mall with restaurants, clubs, bars, the best multiplex movie theater in town, miniature golf and shops. Live music and mucho alcohol sums up the entertainment options here. Although nights can be packed with partying 20-somethings, bachelorette parties and general drunken mayhem, there's a distinct family-friendly vibe and several bars have reasonable food. Oh, and although it feels like a partying theme park in its own right, you can come here even if you're not visiting the Universal theme parks.
Kraft Azalea Gardens
This quiet 5.22-acre lakeside park features enormous cypress trees and numerous walking trails. It's particularly stunning January through March, when the azaleas burst into bloom. There's a dock, but no barbecues or picnic tables.
Disney's BoardWalk
The quarter-mile-long Disney's BoardWalk area is located across from Epcot and along Crescent Lake. It's designed to echo a waterfront promenade of turn-of-the-century New England seaside resorts. On Thursday to Saturday evenings magicians, jugglers and musicians give a festive vibe, and there are a handful of good restaurants and bars. Pick up a doughnut or cute li'l Mickey Mouse cakes at the bakery, and toot around on a surrey-with-the-fringe-on-top bike.
Far less harried and crowded than Disney Springs, Disney World 's entertainment district is free to the public, and the bridge connecting the boardwalk to the Yacht and Beach club is a good spot to watch the Epcot fireworks.
Winter Park Farmersâ Market
Winter Parkâs historic train station, with its original brick walls and massive vintage wooden sliding doors, houses the Saturday morning Winter Park Farmersâ Market. Youâll find local cheeses and honey, flowers and herbs, along with several excellent stands selling baked goods, spread out in the station and through the gardens.
Itâs a small market, but a lovely spot to people-watch over a cup of coffee or an organic Popsicle.
Lakeridge Winery & Vineyards
Florida's largest premium winery sits on a 127-acre estate about 25 miles northwest of downtown Orlando. Every year, it produces nearly a million bottles of table and sparkling wines from muscadine and hybrid grapes.
The daily tours and tastings at the winery are completely free. The 45-minute experience includes a 15-minute video followed by a tour of the production area and a peek at the expanse of the vineyard. It also hosts a free music series throughout the year, as well as a free open house during the holidays. It's about 25 miles northwest of downtown Orlando, just off Florida's Turnpike in the townland of Clermont.
Lake Eola Park
This little city park sits between downtown and Thornton Park. A paved sidewalk circles the water, there's a waterfront playground and you can rent swan paddleboats ($15 for 30 minutes). To see the real thing, keep an eye out for white swans and other birds that live in the park. A paved .9-mile walkway encircles the park.
Consistent shade, convenient location and a fenced-in playground make it an ideal escape for families. Street parking is found all around the park.
Zora Neale Hurston National Museum of Fine Arts
Dedicated to Florida writer and anthropologist Zora Neale Hurston (1881â1960), who was born in Eatonville and is famous for her novel Their Eyes Were Watching God , this tiny one-room museum features changing exhibits of African American artists.
While the museum itself attracts folks with particular interests in the author, African American studies or a specific exhibit, the Zora! Festival held here attracts thousands for a multiday family-friendly celebration every January.

Table of Contents
Free Orlando Places to Visit
First up, I am sharing the six best places to go in Orlando for free. These are entertainment or community centers where you can walk around and often find free entertainment. Though some can be enhanced by buying a meal or a souvenir, all these options are just as fun for leisure, people-watching, and making memories.
1. Disney Springs and Disney’s Boardwalk
Though Disney World is a costly affair for many, you can actually experience a few areas of it for free! The most notable is Disney Springs . Parking here is totally free and you can enjoy live performances, window shopping, and a boat ride without paying a dollar. Of course, you may want to buy a snack or a drink to make it a more fun experience, but I have had a blast just walking around many times.
From Disney Springs, you can also take a free bus ride to any of the Disney World resorts. If you take one to the Grand Floridian, Polynesian, or Contemporary, you can take a free monorail ride and see each of the resorts and even the Magic Kingdom fireworks show. Alternatively, take the bus to Disney’s Boardwalk which offers another free entertainment district with lots of neat architecture and entertainment to see.

Know Before You Go: Free Orlando Things to Do
I hope this guide proved to you that you can have fun in Orlando without spending a dollar! From festivals to nature trails, there is plenty to experience on a budget. Whether you are a local or visiting, here are some things to keep in mind when finding free Orlando things to do:
- Keep an eye on the weather when planning an activity in Orlando. Florida weather can change quickly, especially in the summer with storms popping up. It also is much hotter here than on the coast, so do not plan to be outside all day in the summer.
- You will have to pay for parking in the city and near tourist locations. Pretty much most places in Downtown Orlando and on I-Drive have a small parking cost. If you are concerned, look it up ahead of time or take an Uber.
- Avoid I-4 during rush hour as much as possible. This is where there is the worst traffic! Traffic in the city is bad all around between 4 PM to 7 PM most days though.
- If you are looking for a place to grab a meal while out and about, check out my complete Orlando restaurant guide .

18 Free Things to Do in and around Orlando
08/12/2021 by Emily Becker Leave a Comment
It’s no secret that Orlando is one of the most touristy cities in the United States, because of Disney World, Universal Studios, and other theme parks. It truly is a giant playground for kids and adults alike â but many attractions cost a pretty penny to indulge in.
Even if you are traveling to Orlando to visit the parks, these free things to do in Orlando will not only allow you to save some money but also give you a more authentic experience:
Table of Contents
18. Theme park fireworks
The best part of the Disney World fireworks show is that you can see it from several places outside the theme park. To see the nightly Magic Kingdom show, check the schedule first to see what time it starts. Then get a great view of the display from the boat launch of Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort , which you can access if you have a drink or a meal there.
Another option to watch the fireworks for free is to catch them from the next place on this list: Disney’s BoardWalk.
17. Disney’s BoardWalk
This quarter-mile boardwalk, whose design evokes a charming 1920s Coney Island feel, is a beautiful place to stroll along the water’s edge, catch street performances, and scope out that perfect dinner spot, all for free. (And see the fireworks show mentioned above.)
The BoardWalk is also connected to Disney’s free ferry system, which can take you over to the next free thing to do in Orlando: Disney Springs.
16. Disney Springs
Disney Springs is mostly just a shopping and dining area, but also a great place to spend some time exploring. On any given day, you’ll be able to take in the epic architecture all around you, along with pop-up street performances.
From there, you can take the free ferry to EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, or the Magic Kingdom, even if you don’t have a pass to those parks â the ride from Disney Springs is still fun to do on its own!
15. The Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art
This kitschy art museum in nearby Winter Park is just 25 minutes away from downtown Orlando. It features the worldâs most comprehensive collection of works by Louis Comfort Tiffany, including his glassworks, paintings, jewelry, pottery, and more. Most of the pieces in the museum are from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, giving you a true blast from the past.
The museum is free to visit during the month of August if you make your reservation here .
14. Harry P. Leu Gardens
Just a few minutes from downtown Orlando lies a 50-acre botanical oasis, the Harry P. Leu Gardens. This lush green heaven used to be the home of Leu and his wife Mary Jane before they donated the home and surrounding gardens to the city of Orlando in 1961. The mission of the gardens is to preserve native plant life and allow visitors to enjoy it fully.
The Harry P. Leu Gardens has several free-admission days, which you can find here .
13. Winter Park History Museum
If you’re looking to dive into the Orlando area’s rich history, don’t miss out on the Winter Park History Museum. Featuring rotating exhibits dedicated to storytelling and preservation, the museum gives visitors a neat picture of what this area was like before Disney World came to be, along with snapshots of how much has changed since then.
You can visit Winter Park History Museum from 10am to 4pm Tuesday through Friday and from 10am to 2pm Saturday.
12. Universal CityWalk
After 6pm you can find free parking at Universal CityWalk, allowing you to enjoy the sights and sounds of this several-acre area without paying a dime. You can even catch a free water taxi at CityWalk, which will take you to other Universal Orlando theme parks without needing a park pass to board.
Universal CityWalk has free dance parties to live DJ sets, along with other street performances. For a complete list of shops, restaurants, and other attractions there, check out the website .

A great way to enjoy the big screen without the insane price of a cinema ticket is checking to see if your destination has free movie nights in a local park. For example, in nearby Maitland, just under 20 minutes from Orlando, Enzian hosts free movie nights called Popcorn Flicks in the Park ; these are free to the public and typically start at either 7 or 8pm.
Pack a picnic and a cozy blanket to lounge on, and enjoy the family-friendly atmosphere of this wholesome event.

This is a calm break from the theme park madness of Orlando and an awesome way to spend a day outdoors â for free!

Doing Disney For Free
Disney springs.
Disney Springs at the Walt Disney World Resort is a Disney-themed mall with shops, restaurants, shows, and numerous activities. Obviously, not everything at Disney Springs is free, but there's no admission charge to enter and you can wander around as long as you like. Disney Springs is open from ten in the morning until eleven in the evening. Daytime is great, but evenings have a more special atmosphere.
What can you do for free at Disney Springs? The answer is lots. Take a selfie with the seven-foot-tall Coca-Cola Polar Bear then have a stroll around Exposition Park where the local food trucks will probably entice you to put your hand in your pocket. Watch the hot air balloon rise into the air, wave to the kids riding the Marketplace Train Express or the Marketplace Carousel then take in the Lake Buena Vista scenery at Waterview Park.
One place the kids will drag you into and won't want to leave is the Lego Imagination Center where there's a play and building brick area for them to get creative in.
If you go to Disney Springs during the evening, you'll find there's free live music at The Landing in Waterview Park and also in the Marketplace where as well as musicians there are Disney dance troupes doing their stuff.Â
Disney Boardwalk
For a real Coney Island-style holiday atmosphere, take a stroll along the Disney Boardwalk in the EPCOT resort area. There's no charge to get onto the boardwalk so unless you sit down at a restaurant it will be cost-free. During the evenings there's free live entertainment in the form of street performers on the boardwalk which are great fun to watch.
Disney's Free Ferry
You don't need to go into any of the attractions to be able to take a ride on the free Disney ferries of Walt Disney World. The paddle steamer-style ferries depart from Disney Springs and the EPCOT resort to the Magic Kingdom, one of the theme parks, at regular intervals from seven-thirty in the morning until the park closes. If you don't want to go into the park, just sit back, relax and enjoy the round trip.

Free Outdoor Activities In Orlando
There's definitely no shortage of free things to do in Orlando if you choose to do something outdoors. The city has some fantastic parks, great gardens, and even better hiking trails none of which cost a single cent to enjoy.
Lake Eola Park
One of the best spots to head for in Downtown Orlando for some free outdoor recreation is the beautiful Lake Eola Park.
Manmade Lake Eola is the central feature of the park and at its heart is a fountain that is illuminated at night. Daytime activities at the park include a gentle stroll or even a jog around the perimeter pathway of the lake, bird watching, or having a picnic on the grass.
Lake Eola Park is also where you'll find the Walt Disney Amphitheater where, as well as many free festivals, you can catch some free entertainment like a movie, music concert, or dramatic act.
Loch Haven Park
Loch Haven Park is a cultural park on Princeton Street which is around ten minutes drive north of Downtown Orlando.
Admission to the park is free, but not to all of the attractions it contains. In the park you'll find the Orlando Museum of Art which does have free entry art days and the Orlando Science Center which is free if you're a member. There are also several other museums and two theaters in Loch Haven as well as summertime free concerts on the outdoor floating stage.
From the park you can walk to the Novel Ivanhoe Village which is one of Orlando's upcoming trendy districts renowned for its Bohemian atmosphere, great restaurants, and craft boutiques.
Other Great Free Parks In Orlando
Icon Park â Icon Park is an entertainment complex on International Drive with free admission. Other than the dancing fountains and spectacular light shows, the rides and attractions inside are not free of charge.
Big Tree Park â Big Tree Park is somewhere to go to get an unusual photo for your social media. The park contains some of the oldest cypress trees in Orlando and they are huge.
Kelly Park â Kelly Park is a popular spot in Orlando for tubing so if you want some free fun on the water this is the park to head for. The park has limited visitor capacity so it's recommended to get there early.
Hikes, Gardens, and Forests
Orlando urban trail.
There really is no excuse for not getting some exercise while you're staying in Orlando. The perfect place to put your best foot forward is the Orlando Urban Trail which is part of the Orlando Trail Network.
The Orlando Urban Trail is a paved hiking and cycling path running from Lake Highland near Downtown Orlando to Mead Garden in Winter Park. It's a pretty level three miles with several connections leading off to various lakes along the way where you can stop off and spot some of the Florida wildlife.Â
Mead Botanical Garden
If you do walk the Orlando Urban Trail you'll want to stop off to take a look around the Mead Botanical Garden located in Winter Park before you make the about-turn and head back to Downtown Orlando.
Amid the fifty acres of tranquil greenery in the Mead Botanical Garden is the ideal place to stop and contemplate the beauty of nature that surrounds you.
After you've recovered sufficiently from your hike there, start to explore and you'll discover thousands of plants, a butterfly garden, a superb nature trail, and you'll have the opportunity to do some geocaching.
West Orange Trail
One of the best hikes in Orlando is the West Orange Trail. The paved trail is a multi-use path stretching across the Florida countryside for twenty-two miles.Â
If you don't want to complete the entire length and then have to walk all the way back, join the trail at the Winter Garden Station. If the walk sounds too daunting, while they're not free, you can hire an e-bicycle at the station so you can go a lot further with a lot less effort.
University of Central Florida Arboretum
If you're not planning on trekking the Orlando Urban Trail or going to Winter Park, you can still lose yourself in nature by visiting the University of Central Florida Arboretum.
This 80-acre patch of urban countryside accessible from Scorpius Street contains over 600 different plant species set out in gardens rather than growing wild. You can wander along the pathways intersecting the gardens at will or pre-book a docent tour if you want to discover more about the plants.
Ocala National Forest
When you want to make an escape from the urban spread of Orlando try heading for the Ocala National Forest . The forest is around an hour's drive north of Downtown Orlando so not exactly within easy reach, but the effort you'll make to get there will be fully compensated.
The forest covers a vast area where there are lakes with swim beaches and rivers for canoeing or kayaking. You can see Florida wildlife at its best including manatees in the waterways.Â
Free Things To Do At Night In Orlando
You don't need to flash the cash to get well and truly entertained in Orlando. Check out the free nights at these venues for some great comedy and music.
The Drunken Monkey
The Drunken Monkey on North Bumby Avenue is primarily a craft coffee shop, but on Fridays and Saturdays, they open the doors at 8:30 PM for comedy open mic nights.
Entrance is free, but you're expected to drink or eat something which is not a bad deal when you're getting free entertainment. The Drunken Monkey also serves as an art gallery for local artists so not only will you have a good laugh, you'll get to browse some great artwork too.
Downtown CREDO
Downtown CREDO on North Orange Avenue in Orlando's North Quarter Market is also a craft coffee shop that likes to keep its clients entertained. The free Diverse Words events are hosted by Orlando's resident poet laureate, Shawn Welcome, and happen in Downtown CREDO on a Tuesday night between 7:30 PM and 10 PM. They concentrate on the more literary so if you feel the need to wax lyrical while in Orlando, this is the place for you.
East End Market
East End Market on Corrine Drive in Orlando is where many artisans ply their wares. It's also a place where local musicians go to show off their talents and grow their fan base.
Free live music at East End Market usually happens on a Friday or Saturday night in the Green Courtyard. Artists change weekly, but you can check who's playing on the market's official website.
From Downtown Orlando to the Disney resort areas there are so many free things to do in Orlando that they'll make you think twice about putting your hand in your pocket to do anything else.
Hopefully, you'll find it comforting to know you won't need to restrict yourself to a free Tuesday somewhere, the Winter Park History Museum or the Winter Park Farmers Market to find something free to do while you're in Orlando. There's a lot more choice than that so make the most of it and enjoy your time in Orlando.

Solar eclipse: What time, what will I see? Answers to 10 of the most common questions
We're at one week to go for the 2024 solar eclipse .
While Florida isn't in the path of totality, meaning we won't see the moon completely block the sun, depending on where you are in the state, anywhere from 52 percent to 84 of the sun will disappear behind the moon.
Here are the most googled questions about the eclipse being asked today by those in Florida.
What day is the solar eclipse?
The solar eclipse will take place April 8.
Warby Parker eclipse glasses
Warby Parker is offering free eclipse glasses  at any of its locations starting today, Monday, April 1, while supplies last.
For the last week, the company has been promoting the glasses offer with short videos  posted to social media of a woman in very Bella Baxter-like clothing (and eclipse glasses), lurching about in wonderment and looking up into the sky at a total eclipse, over a quote from the movie and haunting piano music.
Bella Baxter was in the award-winning 2023 movie "Poor Things."
Total solar eclipse 2024 path
In the United States, April's total solar eclipse will cross 13 states. Florida is not included.
Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine, plus parts of Tennessee and Michigan, are all in the 115-mile-wide path of totality.
To see the exact path of totality, check out an interactive map  created by French eclipse expert Xavier Jubier.
What is an eclipse?
There are two types: lunar and solar.
During a lunar eclipse, the earth's shadow obscures the moon.
During a solar eclipse, the moon passes between the sun and the earth, said NASA .
There are four types of solar eclipses: total, annular, partial and hybrid.
- Total solar eclipse: A total solar eclipse happens when the moon passes between the sun and earth, completely blocking the face of the sun, according to NASA .
- Annular solar eclipse: This happens when the moon passes between the sun and earth, but when it is at or near its farthest point from earth. Because its farther away, the moon won't completely block the sun.
- Partial solar eclipse: This happens when the moon passes between the sun and earth but the three are not lined up perfectly, so only a part of the sun will appear to be covered, giving it a crescent shape.
- Hybrid solar eclipse: Because earth's surface is curved, sometimes an eclipse can shift between annular and total as the moonâs shadow moves across the globe.
Time to see peak solar eclipse in Florida
While Florida isn't in the path of totality, residents will be able to see a partial eclipse. Here's when you can watch the eclipse in any Florida location.
Depending on where you are in the Sunshine State, the moon will block anywhere from 54 percent to 82 percent  of the sun. Residents in the northwest corner of the state will see more of the eclipse.
Click on your location in the map to see what percentage of the sun will be covered, when the peak time will be and the latest weather forecast when it comes to whether there will be clear skies on April 8.

Countdown clock to 2024 solar eclipse
How much of the 2024 solar eclipse will be visible in florida.
Florida is not in the path of totality for April's solar eclipse. That means the moon won't totally block the sun.
Pineville, in the northwestern tip of Florida's Panhandle, is the city in Florida where the greatest percentage of the sun will be covered during the eclipse, according to Eclipse2024.
At the midpoint of the eclipse, Pineville viewers will see 82.4 percent of the sun covered at 1:55 .m. CDT, closely followed by Bratt with 82.3 percent of the sun blocked by the moon.
How often is there a solar eclipse?
On average, a total solar eclipse is visible from somewhere on earth every 18 months, according to Space.com.
When will Florida see a total solar eclipse?
Almost all of Florida will be in the path of totality for a  total solar eclipse coming in 2045.
On Aug. 12, 2045, a total solar eclipse will be visible over almost all of Florida, according to NationalEclipse.com.
States in the path of totality  â where residents will see the moon completely block the sun â include not only Florida but also:
California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, and Georgia.
Maps of the April 2024 Total Solar Eclipse
By Jonathan Corum
On April 8, the moon will slip between the Earth and the sun, casting a shadow across a swath of North America: a total solar eclipse.
By cosmic coincidence, the moon and the sun appear roughly the same size in the sky. When the moon blocks the glare of the sun, the sunâs outer atmosphere, or corona, will be briefly visible.
Below are several maps of the eclipseâs path as well as images of what you might experience during the event.
Where Can I See the Total Eclipse?
The eclipse will begin at sunrise over the Pacific Ocean, then cut through Mexico and cross the United States from Texas to Maine. Most of North America will see a partial eclipse, but viewers within the deepest shadow â a band sliding from MazatlĂĄn, Mexico, to the Newfoundland coast near Gander, Canada â will experience a total solar eclipse.

What Will I See?

If the sky is clear, viewers in the path of the total eclipse should see a âdiamond ringâ effect a few seconds before and after the total eclipse, as the edge of the sun slips in and out of view.

The sunâs outer atmosphere, or corona, is normally hidden by the sunâs glare. These tendrils and sheets of gas, heated to a million degrees Fahrenheit or more, are in constant motion and shaped by the sunâs swirling magnetic field.

The sun is relatively active this year and is nearing the expected peak of its 11-year solar cycle . Researchers at Predictive Science are using data about the sunâs magnetic field to predict and model a dramatic corona for the April eclipse.

What Colors Should I Wear?
As the sky darkens, light-sensitive cells in human eyes become more sensitive to blue and green hues than to reds and oranges. This shift in color perception is known as the Purkinje effect , after a 19th-century Czech scientist, and is typically seen at twilight.
Watching the 2017 total eclipse at Southern Illinois University.
Andrea Morales for The New York Times
To take advantage of the Purkinje effect, wear green clothes or a contrasting combination of greens and reds. Blue-green colors (shorter wavelengths) will appear brighter, while red colors (longer wavelengths) will appear to recede into the darkness.
What If I Miss It?
The next two total solar eclipses in the United States wonât occur until 2044 and 2045 . But eclipse chasers might catch one in 2026 in Greenland, Iceland and Spain; 2027 along the coast of Northern Africa; 2028 in Australia and New Zealand; or 2030 across Southern Africa and Australia.

Our Coverage of the Total Solar Eclipse
Hearing the Eclipse: Â A device called LightSound is being distributed to help the blind and visually impaired experience what they canât see .
Maine Brac es Itself :  Businesses and planning committees are eager for visitors, but some in remote Aroostook County are not sure how they feel  about lying smack in the path of totality.
A Dark Day for Buffalo:  When the sky above Buffalo briefly goes dark  on the afternoon of April 8, the city will transcend its dreary place in the public consciousness â measured as it so often is by snowstorms â if only for about three minutes. The city canât wait.
Under the Moonâs Shadow: Â The late Jay Pasachoff, who spent a lifetime chasing eclipses , inspired generations of students to become astronomers by dragging them to the ends of the Earth for a few precarious moments of ecstasy.
A Rare Return:  It is rare for a total solar eclipse to hit the same place twice â once every 366 years on average. People in certain areas will encounter April 8âs eclipse  about seven years after they were near the middle of the path of the âGreat American Eclipse.â
A Small Cityâs Big Plans:  Let the big cities have their eclipse mega-events. In Plattsburgh, N.Y., success looks different  for everyone stopping to look up.
No Power Outages:  When the sky darkens during the eclipse, electricity production in some parts of the country will drop so sharply that it could theoretically leave tens of millions of homes in the dark. In practice, hardly anyone will notice  a sudden loss of energy.
