Road Trip from Brisbane to Melbourne

The journey from Brisbane to Melbourne uncovers two different sides of Australia. You can drive along the sandy coastline with its pristine beaches and sparkling water, or head inland and follow in the footsteps of early European settlers to discover the vast landscape dotted with small towns.

The 2,030 km road trip from Brisbane to Melbourne takes 24 hours to drive. On the way, you can stop at Byron Bay, Port Macquarie, Sydney, Port Jervis and Coffs Harbour, or detour inland to visit Toowoomba, Narrabri, Dubbo, Wagga-Wagga and Goondiwindi.

Whichever vibe you're looking for, it's a journey best explored by road trip - read on to learn about the best routes, places to stop and what to see along the way.

How far is Melbourne from Brisbane, and how long will the road trip take?

One of the most popular ways to do this road trip is to take the Coastal Route from Brisbane to Melbourne, which spans a distance of 2,030 km and takes 24 hours to drive.

This route is slower than the alternative but takes in some of Australia's best-known beaches and buzzing coastal towns and cities. However, if you are short on time it is possible to cut inland from Sydney via the Hume Highway, though you'll miss out on seeing Jervis Bay, Batemans Bay and Eden.

Alternatively, you can take the Inland Route which offers up a different side of Australia. This is a more direct option at 1,680 km long, which takes around 18 hours and 40 minutes to drive.

Whichever route you decide on, we recommend taking 10 days or so for this epic Australia trip so that you can soak up the landscape and enjoy the stops along the way.

Byron Bay, Australia with the white stone Byron Bay lighthouse on the top of sandstone headland of Australian mainland the most eastern point in aerial panorama towards continent.

Best road trip route from Brisbane to Melbourne

Whichever route you take you'll be covering a considerable distance, so it's worth considering how you most want to spend your time on the road.

The Coastal Route is a well-trodden road trip, so you'll meet plenty of other travellers on the way. This route hugs the coastline almost all the way, so there is no shortage of stunning beaches and quaint coastal towns, dotted with lively cities like Newcastle and Sydney.

If you are short on time, it is possible to cut inland from Sydney via the Hume Highway, though you'll miss out on seeing Jervis Bay, Batemans Bay and Eden.

If you've already spent some time exploring the coast, then the Inland Route is a brilliant way to dig deeper into New South Wales. It takes you past national parks, some lesser-known inland cities, and countless small towns along the way.

However, it's worth keeping in mind that on this route there will be some fairly long stretches of driving where you won't find much to do.

The Coastal Route

Get on the M3 from Brisbane and continue on the M1 through the sunny Gold Coast - a great spot for surfing. Take the exit from M1 to Byron Bay.

Rejoin the M1 and follow it south, continuing onto the Pacific Highway/A1 which veers slightly inland. You'll hit the coast again at Woolgoolga, and from there it's a short drive to Coffs Harbour.

Rejoin the Pacific Highway to drive through Bongil Bongil National Park and take the exit for Port Macquarie. From here, head south on the same road until you see signs for Newcastle.

Take A15 out of Newcastle to join M1 heading south. Take the Pacific Hwy/A1 exit from M1 and merge onto the M2 to reach North Sydney. Take the A4/Bridge exit and take the Bradfield Highway to arrive in Sydney.

Follow A1 and M1 south and turn onto Forest Road to wind into the white sands of Jervis Bay. Retrace your drive to rejoin the A1 and follow it to the Old Princes Highway in Batemans Bay. Continue along the coast and wind inland on the A1 to rejoin the sea at Eden.

From Eden, take A1 south and turn onto C620 to Lucknow. Rejoin the A1 and take a brief detour via C105, before following the Princes Highway all the way to Melbourne.

Coffs Harbour, NSW, Australia with a grass verge and cliffs and white sand and sea in the distance on a sunny day.

The Inland Route

Take M5 out of Brisbane and get on the Warrego Highway following signs to Toowoomba. Take A21 to arrive in Toowoomba City.

Follow State Route 85 as it becomes the A39 and follow this road south to enter New South Wales and reach Narrabri. Rejoin this road to head south through the Pilliga Nature Reserve, then turn onto Mendooran Road. Take Cobbora Road to reach B84, where you can take a break in the city of Dubbo.

Take A32 south to join B81 in Molong. Turn right to follow signs for Parkes and Forbes, then rejoin B81 and take A41 south. Exit A41 to follow signs for M31, with the option to take the exit for Wagga Wagga.

Rejoin M31 to arrive in Albury-Wodonga. Follow National Highway M31 to State Route 50 in West Melbourne and take exit 4 from M2. Continue on State route 50 and take Dudley Street and Queen Street to arrive in central Melbourne.

Wagga Wagga, Australia with a sunset over the Murrumbidgee River then as an aerial drone view.

Best places to stop between Brisbane and Melbourne

Both routes are filled with breathtaking scenery and urban centres to explore, and you'll definitely want to make a few planned stops along the way - also leave yourself some free time to stop for incredible viewpoints and impromptu hikes!

We've chosen a few spots that are worth stopping at for a night or longer to soak up the atmosphere.

Be inspired by majestic sights in Sydney

Just under halfway along the Coastal Route, you'll arrive in Sydney, the iconic capital of New South Wales. Known for its sparkling harbour and glitzy skyline, the city is packed with things to see and do including beaches, museums and a fabulous food scene.

Sydney, Australia with an amazing skyline at dusk and a view under the bridge to the city in the distance.

It's impossible to miss Sydney Harbour with its iconic architecture and beautiful outlook over the Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge - it's the perfect place to get a feel for the city and start your tour. From there, head to the Royal Botanical Gardens, an oasis of colour and calm with amazing views across the city.

Skip Manly Beach and head past it to Shelly Beach, which is tucked in its own small bay. The water here is calm and clear so that with just a mask and snorkel you can see amazing sea life just a stone's throw from the beach.

The Sebel Quay West Suites Sydney is a great base from which to explore everything going on in the city . Their contemporary rooms have spectacular views of Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House, as does the on-site pool.

All rooms include a kitchenette so you can fix yourself breakfast before heading out to sightsee in this fascinating city before stopping by one of the amazing restaurants downtowns, or there is a fantastic on-site restaurant if you prefer to have a meal in the comfort of your own hotel.

The central location is the real selling point for these suites - you'll be within walking distance of lots of the main attractions, and just a few blocks from Circular Quay, where you can take a train or a ferry to visit other parts of the city.

Uncover the past in Dubbo

At the halfway point of the Inland Route, you'll reach Dubbo, one of the bigger cities along the journey. Situated on the Macquarie River, it offers plenty of interesting attractions including a famous zoo.

Dubbo, NSW, Australia with a view of Jacaranda over rural street in Victoria Park with lilac tress lining the path.

The Taronga Western Plains Zoo is a branch of the Taronga Zoo in Sydney with more space for its larger animals to breed. You'll find a pride of lions, a herd of elephants, rhinos, giraffes, zebras and tigers, all with plenty of space to roam at this large site.

To get a glimpse of what rural life was like here in the 1840s, visit Dundullimal Homestead or head to Dubbo Old Gaol where less law-abiding citizens of the town were detained. Executions even took place here until the early 1900s.

At certain times of day, you can meet characters who served out their time here and hear their stories, and there are ghost tours after dark.

The Macquarie River runs straight through the city, and there is a beautiful riverside trail that lets you enjoy views of the landscape on foot. It has plenty of places to stop and picnic along the way too.

In Dubbo, Orana Motel is a great option for an overnight stay - it has a swimming pool which is perfect for cooling down after a long day on the road. The rooms are spacious, and parking is free. It's located right by the highway, so is easy to navigate from the route and to hop back on the next day.

Where to stay when you reach Melbourne

Melbourne is the capital of Victoria, and packs a punch in terms of culture, music and artsy vibes as you can expect from a metropolitan city of its calibre.

Melbourne, Australia with the city skyline at twilight and balloons in the sky.

With so much to see and do, the Next Hotel Melbourne is a no-brainer for your stay. Like Melbourne itself, the hotel has a cool contemporary design with vintage touches, and some rooms have views right across the city.

It's located right in the heart of the city, just a short walk from the Yarra River and Fed Square, so you can step right out of your hotel into the action.

Best time to go on a road trip from Brisbane to Melbourne

Much of this route sees blue skies and sunshine all year round, but to enjoy the beaches of the Coastal Route at their best, October to April is your best bet.

The summer season is an extremely popular time to travel – and for good reason! With average temperatures reaching up to 30 degrees Celsius right along the coastal route (and often soaring much higher) it's the perfect weather to enjoy the beach.

Keep in mind that the ocean can remain chilly until high summer, and many places on the route may experience summer rain.

The inland route gets hotter, with average temperatures in the 30s and above in Dubbo, for example. Many travellers prefer to make long drives on this route outside of peak summer given the choice.

While winter isn't exactly cold on the coastal route – temperatures around 20 degrees in Byron Bay, 18 degrees in Sydney, and 14 degrees in Melbourne – it's still not likely to be warm enough to relax on the beach for long.

Winter also brings fog and rain to Melbourne, which is famous for its unpredictable weather. However, this is the best time of year to see the whales which travel along the Australian coastline. Temperatures will be similar on the inland route.

Crowds will be less in spring and fall, as long as you travel outside the January and late February school holidays. Prices are also likely to rise again during the school holidays.

Temperatures on the coast will sit around the mid-20s, creeping up to 30 degrees inland, though it will be cooler by the time you reach Melbourne.

There is plenty going on in Melbourne all year round, including the Australian Open and St Jerome's Laneway Festival in January – a massive music event that brings huge crowds to the city. In March, the city hosts the Australian Grand Prix, and the AFL Grand Final in September.

There is plenty of art and performance to see at the Melbourne Festival in October, while world-famous horse race the Melbourne Cup comes to town in November. If you're here for Christmas, however, you'll want to head to Sydney to catch the New Years Eve fireworks.

50 people injured by 'strong movement' on Boeing plane flying from Australia to New Zealand

50 injured after 'technical event' on boeing plane.

At least 50 people were injured Monday after a LATAM Airlines Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner "dipped so dramatically into a nose dive for a couple of seconds" during a flight to New Zealand, causing passengers to slam into the roof of the cabin, witnesses say. FOX's Alex Hogan joined LiveNOW from FOX's Josh Breslow with the details.

At least 50 people were injured Monday after a LATAM Airlines Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner "dipped so dramatically into a nose dive for a couple of seconds" during a flight to New Zealand, causing passengers to slam into the roof of the cabin, witnesses say.

LATAM Airlines says the plane traveling from Sydney, Australia, experienced "a technical event during the flight which caused a strong movement." Paramedics and more than 10 emergency vehicles were waiting for passengers when flight LA800 landed in Auckland.

"The plane dipped so dramatically into a nose dive for a couple of seconds and around 30 people hit the ceiling hard," said Daniel, one passenger onboard the aircraft, according to the New Zealand Herald.

"None of us knew what had happened until after the flight, I was just trying to keep everyone calm," he added. "We never heard any announcement from the captain."

DOJ OPENS PROBE INTO ALASKA AIRLINES PLANE BLOWOUT: REPORT

The newspaper reports that the incident happened with about an hour left into the flight.

"I had just dozed off and I luckily had my seatbelt on, and all of a sudden the plane just dropped," passenger Brian Jokat also told broadcaster RNZ. "It wasn’t one of those things where you hit turbulence and you drop a few times ... we just dropped."

Jokat said one passenger two seats away from him wasn’t wearing his seatbelt when the drop happened.

"I thought I was dreaming. I opened my eyes and he was on the roof of the plane on his back, looking down on me. It was like The Exorcist," he said.

Jokat also told RNZ that the incident occurred in seconds.

"I felt the plane take a nosedive – it felt like it was at the top of a rollercoaster, and then it flattened out again," he reportedly added, noting that people onboard and the flight crew tended to the injured until the plane landed.

About 50 people were treated at the scene for mostly mild injuries while 13 of them were transported to a hospital, an ambulance spokesperson told the Associated Press. One patient who was on the flight was reportedly in serious condition.

NTSB: bolts on Boeing Jetliner were 'missing'

Investigators say bolts that helped secure a panel to the frame of a Boeing 737 Max 9 were missing prior to when a panel blew off an Alaska Airlines plane. Pilots were then forces to make an emergency landing with a hole in the plane.

The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner's final destination was Santiago, Chile, but was landing at Auckland Airport in accordance with its normal flight path, according to Reuters. The flight to Santiago on Monday has been canceled and rescheduled for Tuesday, with the airline providing food and accommodation to travelers affected, according to RNZ.

"LATAM regrets the inconvenience and injury this situation may have caused its passengers, and reiterates its commitment to safety as a priority within the framework of its operational standards," the airline said.

Jokat told RNZ the pilot of the plane came to the back of the cabin after landing in Auckland.

"I asked him ‘what happened?’ and he said to me, ‘I lost my instrumentation briefly and then it just came back all of a sudden,’" Jokat said.

The incident is the latest mishap involving a Boeing plane.

In January, a door plug blew off Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 – a Boeing 737 Max 9 aircraft – causing the cabin to depressurize and forcing it to make an emergency landing in Portland, Oregon. The Justice Department reportedly is opening an investigation into that incident.

Last week, a United Airlines Boeing 777-200 departing San Francisco lost a wheel during takeoff. The tire fell and proceeded to damage a few parked cars at the airport.

The next day, a Boeing 737 skidded off the runway after landing in Houston, Texas, the Federal Aviation Administration said. The National Transportation Safety Board is also investigating an incident in February in which a Boeing 737 Max 8 operated by United Airlines "experienced ‘stuck’ rudder pedals during the landing rollout at Newark Liberty International Airport" in New Jersey.

Top 5: A Look At Australia's Busiest Airports

A ccording to the Australian Government , the country has seven airports designated as major international airports - Adelaide, Brisbane, Cairns, Darwin, Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney (with many more secondary and limited international airports). Of these, five serve the five largest cities of Australia, while two (Cairns and Darwin) are located in smaller, more isolated areas.

After a dramatic drop in passengers during the pandemic, Australian airport numbers are still recovering as Chinese and others return to Australia. All passenger numbers quoted are official pre-pandemic numbers for 2019 from the Australian government. This is because the latest year's stats are for 2022, and those numbers were still down from pre-Covid levels.

Adelaide Airport

Adelaide Airport is the least of the five busiest airports in Australia. It serves the city of Adelaide - by far the largest city in the state of South Australia. Adelaide is the smallest of the five largest Australian cities, with a population of about 1.4 million. Adelaide Airport is located within the city of Adelaide and, as a result, has little room to expand - it's just 3.7 miles west of the city center. Even so, it is capable of handling widebody aircraft, including the massive Airbus A380.

Most of Adelaide Airport's flights are domestic, but it does offer a limited number of international flights as well. It features services to New Zealand (Auckland), Indonesia (Bali), Fiji, Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur), Singapore, Vietnam (Ho Chi Min City), and Qatar (Doha). The main domestic airlines operating in Adelaide are Qantas, QantasLink, Jetstar, Rex Airlines, and Virgin Australia.

Perth Airport

Perth Airport is the most isolated of the major airports of Australia and serves the city of Perth. Being a 1,680-mile drive to the next closest major city, Perth is easily one of the most remote major cities in the world.

Perth boasts one of the longest flights in the world - Qantas' flight QF 9 from Perth to London Heathrow. The flight covers around 9,000 miles and takes 17 hours and 45 minutes, making it the third-longest commercial passenger route in the world.

Perth Airport has considerably more international flights than Adelaide Airport, with flights across South East Asia as well as flights to New Zealand, Mauritius, Japan, South Africa, the Middle East, Europe, North America, and more. To Europe, it offers services to England, France, and Italy (seasonal).

Perth Airport Soaring To New Heights With New Links To Asia

Brisbane airport.

Brisbane Airport is the primary international airport serving Brisbane and southern Queensland. This area is more interesting as the popular Gold Coast Airport is only 70 miles away - very close by Australian standards. The important Gold Coast Airport is the sixth-busiest Australian airport after Adelaide Airport, though it has limited international flights.

Brisbane Airport services 31 airlines with flights to 29 international destinations and around 50 domestic destinations. It is the largest airport in Australia by land area (6,700 acres) and is a key hub for Qantas and Virgin Australia.

Melbourne Airport

Melbourne Airport is locally known as Tullamarine by Australians and is the second-busiest airport serving the second-largest city in Australia. Melbourne Airport was the first airport in Australia to recover to pre-pandemic numbers. It is located a short drive out of Melbourne and has four terminals. Of these, one is for international services, two are standard domestic terminals, and one is home to budget domestic carriers.

Melbourne Airport is now the only international airport in Melbourne. Formerly, Melbourne's other notable airport, Avalon Airport, offered international flights. Since its international carriers pulled out, Avalon Airport has been an international-capable domestic airport (it is only served by Jetstar and Bonza).

Melbourne Airport offers flights to most corners of Australia as well as many very long-distance flights to many parts of the world. It is one of three Australian airports featuring services to the United States. From this major city, Qantas flies to Los Angeles and Dallas/Fort Worth, while United Airlines has flights to Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Qantas' Flight QF 22 from Melbourne to Dallas/Fort Worth is one of the longest nonstop flights in the world, spanning 8,992 miles and taking 17 hours and 35 minutes on a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.

Above & Beyond: Melbourne Airport Expects Record International Passenger Numbers This Summer

Sydney airport.

Unlike most countries' most prominent airports, Sydney Airport does not serve the Australian capital, yet the city is still the nation's largest and is, therefore, home to the busiest airport. The capital of Australia is Canberra - a surprisingly minor city with an accompanying minor airport (ranked 9th busiest in Australia).

Sydney Airport is officially called Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport and is located only 5 miles south of the Sydney CBD, just next to the famous Botany Bay, where the first convicts were sent. Passengers flying into Sydney Airport are treated to sights of iconic Australian landmarks like the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House.

It is a primary hub for Qantas and a major hub for Virgin Australia and Jetstar (as well as being a focus airport for Air New Zealand). Sydney Airport is one of the world's longest continuously operating commercial airports. Qantas and United operate two of the world's longest nonstop flights, from Sydney to Dallas/Fort Worth and Houston, respectively. These take around 17 hours and 30 minutes.

The most affordable cities for transport and how much people are paying for fuel

A blurred photo of a car with trees in the background

Data from the Australian Automobile Association (AAA) shows the cost of transport for Australian households hasn't increased much in the past three months.

But transport costs are still high, the association says — and they change depending on where you are.

We combed through the AAA's latest report to break down the cost of getting around capital cities and regional centres in a car and on public transport.

Where did this data come from?

These figures come from the AAA's Transport Affordability Index, a report the association puts out every three months.

The most recent looks at figures from October, November and December last year .

And it's based on a hypothetical family with two working adults who each have a car — one owned outright and another they're paying off on a loan.

Bear that in mind when you read through the data.

Tap the link below to view the specifics on where the data came from, or otherwise, just scroll down.

Read the specifics on the data first

What does the data tell us?

The average cost of transport went up by 0.7 per cent .

That works out to be an extra $2.81 a week.

But that's only compared to the previous three months — July, August and September.

When you look at the longer-term trends, it's a bleaker picture.

Last year, the Consumer Price Index — which is used to track the cost of living — rose by 4.1 per cent.

But transport costs for the typical Australian household rose by 13 per cent in that time, AAA managing director Michael Bradley points out.

That's more than triple the rate of inflation.

"The continuing decline of transport affordability is a heavy burden at a time when Australians are feeling cost-of-living pressures across the board," Mr Bradley said.

The most- and least-affordable cities

To come up with these figures, the AAA put it in the context of percentage of peoples' incomes — so it takes into account the average earnings of people in each capital city.

The average capital city household spent 17 per cent of its income on transport in the December quarter, it found.

This was a 1.4 per cent rise since the year prior.

Canberra was the most affordable capital, with the average household spending 14.8 per cent of income on transport.

Meanwhile, Hobart was the least affordable where 19.3 per cent of an average household's income went to transport.

Here's how the cities ranked:

  • Hobart: 19.3 per cent
  • Brisbane: 18.7 per cent
  • Melbourne: 17.9 per cent
  • Darwin: 17.4 per cent
  • Sydney: 16.6 per cent
  • Adelaide: 16 per cent
  • Perth: 15.1 per cent
  • Canberra: 14.8 per cent

Among regional areas, Launceston in Tasmania ranked as the least affordable, with people spending 20.1 per cent of their income on transport.

Wagga Wagga in NSW was the most affordable, with 12.3 per cent.

A man holds a petrol bowser while filling up his car.

How much does the average household pay per week?

We don't have the specifics, but the report gives us a general idea.

It assumes a household is made up of  two working adults who own two cars — one they own outright and the other they're paying off.

According to the AAA, Australian households  spend an average of $434.77 per week on car running costs.

Here's a breakdown of that figure:

Yearly transport costs per capital city

In the December quarter, the typical Australian capital city household's annualised cost of transport increased by $140 to $24,402.

The largest component in the higher transport costs was rising car loan payments – up by an annualised average of $71 across the capitals.

Yearly transport costs by regional area

The national regional household's annual cost of transport rose $154 from the previous quarter — up 0.8 per cent — to reach $20,558.

Weekly fuel costs by capital city

The hypothetical family's weekly fuel bill went down by a marginal 0.04 cents compared to the previous quarter.

On average, it was $100.25 — slightly less than the regional average.

It's the highest in Canberra and the cheapest in Perth.

Weekly fuel costs by regional area

The hypothetical family's weekly fuel bill increased by $1.09 compared to the previous quarter.

On average, it was $104.55 — which is slightly more than the hypothetical average for capital cities.

It was highest in Bunbury and lowest in Wagga Wagga.

Weekly public transport costs by capital

The capital city average was $40.72 per household per week .

There were no increases in the last quarter, figures show.

But there was a big difference between the most expensive city — Brisbane — and the cheapest city — Darwin.

Here's how the capital cities ranked:

  • Brisbane: $59.67
  • Melbourne and Sydney: $50.00
  • Perth:  $45.90
  • Adelaide:  $42.50
  • Canberra:  $29.72
  • Hobart:  $28.00
  • Darwin: $20.00

It's important to remember this data is based on a hypothetical family.

The index assumes this family lives in middle-to-outer-ring suburbs with good access to public transport.

It assumes one of the adults in this family commutes to and from work by public transport each weekday.

And you'll notice there's only public transport data for the capital cities. The AAA says that's because there's typically "little or limited availability" for public transport in regional areas.

Three busses behind one another on a road

How did the AAA come up with these figures?

It's based on a hypothetical household, drawing on data from:

  • The Australian Bureau of Statistics — including census data
  • The Bureau of Infrastructure and Transport Research Economics — including motor vehicle use
  • Industry — including new vehicle sales and fuel prices

It assumes this household:

  • Is made up of a 36-year-old male and a 38-year-old female with children living in a detached house
  • Has both adults employed full time and commuting each weekday to workplaces in or near their city or town's CBD
  • Has two cars – a near-new car financed with a variable-rate car loan and an older car owned outright. Both vehicles are roadworthy and registered, and they are garaged at home.
  • Has comprehensive car insurance and both drivers have a spotless driving record
  • Services both vehicles according to manufacturers' guidelines

For capital city households, it assumes this family lives in their city's middle-to-outer-ring suburbs and has good access to public transport.

It also looks at one regional centre for each state and territory — so the data isn't representative for people living in rural towns or remote properties.

It picked regional towns based on the following criteria:

  • A population of more than 10,000 people
  • A relatively dense population
  • Are aged similar to the average ages in the hypothetical city household
  • A reasonable proportion of detached housing
  • A substantial proportion of couple family households with children

In our opinion, it’s always a good idea to be in planning mode your next vacay. Not sure where to start?

We teamed up with our mates at Webjet to uncover some of 2024’s coolest travel destinations that will make all your mates jealous. From snorkelling through shimmering coral reefs and cycling through jungle-cloaked islands, to dancing the night away in a neon-soaked city—we’ve sussed out a stack of incredible vacays with your name on it.

Feeling the pinch when it comes to holiday funds? You can lock in 12 months interest-free* on Webjet bookings of up to $10k with Zip Money . That means when you check out with Zip —our fave BNPL provider—you can lock it in now and spread out the holiday costs over time. Now there’s no excuse! Book in your annual leave team, these are the six trending destinations that you need to visit in 2024.

Seoul, South Korea

Village in Seoul, Korea

An achingly cool city, where temples, teahouses and tradition blend seamlessly with fashion, cutting-edge technology and karaoke, a trip to Seoul is one you won’t soon forget. Immerse yourself in the city’s rich history with a visit to Changdeokgung Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Listed spot home to ornate pavilions and a secret garden.

A true shopping mecca, stock up on all your K-beauty faves and discover burgeoning fashion labels at Myeondong’s Shinsegae Department Store and Yeouido’s The Hyundai—an architectural wonder. Dine like a local at Tongin Market, where you can buy a chain of special gold tokens and exchange them for lunch. Peruse the stalls, fill up your container with moreish Korean dumplings and tteokbokki—stir-fried rice cakes smothered in an umami sauce that’s both sweet and spicy —then tuck into your haul in the upstairs dining area. Gwangjang Market (for the kimbap rolls) and Bamdokkaebi Night Market, are others to add to your must-visit list.

Finally, it wouldn’t be a trip to Seoul without a night (or two) out in the neon-soaked city. Head to buzzing Hongdae where you’ll find bars and supper clubs like Cocoon and Noise Basement for dancing the night away, and iconic karaoke spot Su Noraebang. Warm up your vocal cords and check out the best flights and holiday packages to Seoul here .

Hobart, Tasmania

Panorama of MONA in Tasmania

Hobart should be at the top of any culture seeker or culinary connoisseur’s must-visit list. Perched on the edge of the Apple Isle, old warehouses and colonial cottages sit snugly beside elegant sandstone buildings, distilleries, bars and art galleries.

Let your nose guide you to award-winning eateries that rival the food scene in Melbourne, with meals at innovative restaurant Dier Makr, 25-seat intimate eatery Templo, Italian hotspot Fico and The Agrarian Kitchen—whose ever-changing menu heroes local produce.

And of course, a trip to Hobart isn’t complete without a stroll through the iconic Salamanca Markets where you can fill your canvas bag with fresh oysters, truffles, cheeses and sourdough. Then work it all off with a hike to the summit of Kunanyi (Mt Wellington). Your calf burn will be rewarded with sweeping views of the harbour city. Round out your trip with a visit to Australia’s most eclectic and thought-provoking museum, MONA. Pro tip: book a seat in the Posh Pit on the ferry there, and enjoy bottomless bubbles and tasty snacks while cruising in a camouflaged catamaran. Keen to explore this vibrant city? Head here to check out the best flights and holiday packages to Hobart.

Palawan, Philippines

Panorama View Of Palawan Islands In The Phillipines

Awash with natural beauty that will leave your jaw firmly on the powder-white sand, Palawan is the kind of place you dream about. Dazzling turquoise waters encase this emerald archipelago that teems with exotic wildlife, lush rainforest and a rich tapestry of underwater playgrounds.

Endless adventures abound in Palawan—start with a dive at Coron Island, where you can explore the haunting husks of Japanese Shipwrecks from 1944. And you can’t miss Tubbataha Reefs National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage spot home to a dazzling coral shelf where marine life like giant wrasse, rays and hammerheads mingle.

Surfers should head to El Nido, whose beach puts the Maldives to shame—with a jungle-cloaked backdrop and waters brimming with over 800 species of fish. For something truly goosebump-inducing, check out Puerto-Princesa Subterranean River National Park, where you can float through cathedral-like caverns on one of the world’s longest underground rivers. Already picturing yourself on the beach? Check out the best flights and holiday packages to Palawan here .

Ha Long Bay, Vietnam

Panoramic shot of Ha Long Bay with boats

With towering limestone cliffs and jungle-clad islands encasing glittering emerald water, Ha Long Bay’s postcard-perfect vistas make it an easy choice for your next 2024 sojourn.  One of the best ways to discover the unparalleled beauty of this UNESCO site is by boat. Ranging from luxury to budget, there’s a plethora of cruise options to choose from.

Whatever option you choose, kayaking amongst the karsts is non-negotiable. Seeing their magnificence up close is something you’ll reminisce about for years to come. Adventure seekers can also rock climb the cliffs, hike through the islands or even explore them on two wheels—Cat Ba Island has several trails that will see you cycling between lush forests and rice paddies (you can even zipline there).

For a real pinch-me moment, be sure to check out Ha Long Bay’s many floating villages. Our fave is Cua Van floating fishing village, a cluster of colourful houseboats and rafts strung together, with fishermen perched on the edge bringing in the day’s haul. Ready to climb aboard? Check out the best flights and holiday packages to Ha Long Bay here .

Cairns, Queensland

People jumping off boat into water near island

Where else in the world can you snorkel among a kaleidoscope of fish in the world’s largest coral reef in the AM, then meander through a rainforest older than the Amazon in the PM? Cairns, of course. If you’ve been sleeping on this jewel in North Queensland’s dazzling crown, it’s time to take notice, because this slice of paradise is home to not one but two UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Base yourself at one of the many hotels situated along the esplanade and eat and drink your way through the city’s buzzing night markets and waterfront bars—the sunsets here are phenomenal. By day, your options are endless. See the reef from above with a helicopter ride, or below, with a snorkelling tour alongside a Master Reef Guide, the true guardians of this beautiful place. And be sure to carve out some time to explore the Wet Tropics, a labyrinth of greenery home to a slew of native animals. The best way to immerse yourself in this ancient land is with a local Kuku Yalanji guide. Ready to explore this breathtaking spot? Check out the best flights and holiday packages to Cairns here .

Colombo, Sri Lanka

Man walking with arms open towards sea

A beguiling city of contrasts, swap your yearly Bali sojourn for something a little different this year, with a memory-making trip to Colombo. A melting pot of culture and religion, here you’ll find red-tiled colonial buildings rubbing shoulders with modern hotels and bustling street markets overflowing with fragrant spices.

Delve into the city’s multi-ethnic history with visits to Fort Station, Gangaramaya Temple and the Red Mosque. Cut about the city in a tuk-tuk, stopping to explore the plethora of colour and flavours at Pettah Bazaar, where you’ll fill your bag with spices, fruit and textured fabrics. Just make sure you sample kottu rotti, a famous Sri Lankan street food—finely chopped flatbread filled with mixed veggies, egg and chicken.

Escape the hustle and bustle of the city with a short train ride to Mount Lavinia Beach. Here you’ll find bars and restaurants fringing the ocean slinging ice-cold beers and fresh seafood curry—the people-watching is also top-notch. When the sun goes down, back in the city the adventures are endless. Have sunset cocktails at the famous Galle Face Hotel built in 1864, shop handmade wares along Paradise Road and indulge in a tea tasting (it’s the home of Ceylon tea). Keen to explore this gem for yourself? Check out the best flights and holiday packages to Colombo here .
